Dalrymple’s dilemma – Gordon and ALP seal fate of the bush
Sisters Paityn and Kinsley Glaspy at the Malanda Hotel and Spar Halloween ‘Trick or Treat’ event.
By Justin Fris
Communities celebrate Halloween in style Malanda was just one of many local communities who took on a ‘haunted’ look last Saturday evening, as children and families dressed up in their scariest costumes for Halloween. Local businesses, Malanda Hotel and Spar, facilitated a special ‘trick or treat’ event, which was hugely popular with the towns locals. In Mareeba, local mum Samantha Malcolm organised a ‘trick or treating’ event around the streets of Mareeba with more than 65 children taking part. These are just two of the many Halloween events that were held across the region last Saturday to commemorate Halloween.
STAGE 3 COMING SOON!
REGIONAL Queensland has been dealt another hammer blow from lawmakers in Brisbane, after the Palaszczuk Government opposed the LNP’s Electoral (Redistribution Commission) and Another Act Amendment Bill 2015 last Wednesday evening. The LNP had designed the Bill in a bid to create more regional electorates and MP’s – and subsequently attempt to improve the standard of living conditions and resources for rural and remote electorates. Instead, rumblings from Brisbane are indicating when the next formation of state electoral boundaries are re-distributed – regional Qld could lose up to four electorates – with these seats tipped to be allocated to the south-east corner of the state. The number of MP’s in parliament will remain the same, despite Qld’s population having increased by two million since the matter was last reviewed in 1987. Locally, the future of the Dalrymple electorate is in grave doubt, with officials tipped to dissolve it and merge it into the neighbouring Hinchinbrook electorate.
For local member Shane Knuth, naturally this outcome is devastating. Another MP to be affected will be fellow KAP MP Robbie Katter (Member for Mt Isa), whose current electorate is already the same size as France. It is tipped to be increased even further – with some preliminary speculation that the south-eastern boundary of the Mt Isa electorate may eventually touch the outskirts of Toowoomba. Mr Knuth was naturally disappointed with the decision of the vote – in particular, due to the fact that the Member for Cook, Billy Gordon, had sided with the Palaszczuk Government, instead of his fellow rural constituents. If Dalrymple was to become dissolved in its current form before the next election, Mr Knuth would possibly need to run as a candidate for either Cook or Hinchinbrook – or potentially even call time on his state political career. “I cannot believe the Bill was rejected,” he said. “Labor had all the slogans but had no solutions to the issue. “A lot is still yet to be finalised and submitted formally – but it definitely will impact everybody. Safe trick or treating Mareeba’s ‘trick or treating’ group at Halloween last Saturday evening, with 65 children taking part.
By Justin Fris
MAREEBA children dressed up in their spookiest fashion last Saturday evening, for a special Halloween experience in the town. Pioneered by local teacher Samantha Malcolm, the children were able to enjoy a safe and enjoyable ‘trick or treating’ experience.
MANAGING EDITOR Carl Portella
Carefully pre-planned for several months, Samantha established a ‘map’ of approved houses – and assigned the children into groups with an adult volunteer. Samantha was heartened that in the days leading up to Halloween, interest in the event had increased. “We’ve got 65 kids ‘trick or treating’ tonight with us,” she said. “And the hous-
es - we are at 30 – it’s absolutely fantastic. “This time we’ve had heaps of houses say that they want all the kids to come along, so this year all the houses are ready for heaps of kids; and heaps of lollies of course.” From 5.30pm, the children embarked on one of the most enjoyable nights of the year – before returning home at 8pm.
Samantha added that she was grateful for the use of the Mareeba Theatre Group Hall prior to the commencement of the evening, where the children played several Halloween-themed party games with their friends. All proceeds raised from ‘trick or treat’ registrations will be passed on to the ‘Indie Rose Foundation’.

TABLELANDS residents are highly encouraged to head along to this weekend’s ‘Tablelands Relay for Life’, which will be held on Saturday and Sunday from 8am at Roosters Stadium in Atherton. The event – which is designed to raise proceeds for cancer research and patient support – is something the entire community can relate to in some way. TRFL Event organiser Gavin Johnson said that after many months of careful planning, TRFL would again be able to shine. “We’ll be there from 8am on Thursday morning setting it all up,” he said. “We are hoping to get between 250 and 300 team participants. “Along with this, there will be 60 local primary school participants.” But perhaps the most significant part of weekend will be the ‘Survivor’s Lap’ – which will see 50-70 cancer survivors complete a lap of Roosters Stadium, with the entire crowd and TRFL team participants applauding and cheering them on.

The ‘Survivor’s Lap’ is arguably one of the central components of the ‘Tablelands Relay for Life’ weekend.
The ‘face’ (ambassador) of this year’s event will be Tablelands regional councillor Geoff Stocker, who said he was keen to share his cancer story and support those currently going through treatment. “So many people don’t realise that there is help available from organisations like the Cancer Coun-
cil - but at TRFL, we can raise awareness and funds to ensure locals affected by cancer have the care they need,” Cr Stocker said. “I know first-hand how important it is to have support during a diagnosis and how the funds raised can help with support and medical research into better treatments.”

FNQ’s ‘bitter pill’ ships proves just how out of touch they are with regional Queensland.” Local business and government personnel within the Dalrymple electorate were also contacted by The Express, in a bid to gauge their thoughts on a potential dissolving of the electorate. Atherton Chamber of Commerce vice president Christine Doan said the potential change could be devastating for the region. “Regional Australia is already suffering enough as it is,” she said. “This change would simply prolong the illness of the regional economy and its resources.” Tablelands Regional Council Mayor Rosa Lee Long, who served as a One Nation MP (old seat of Tablelands) between 2001 and 2009, was also asked to comment on potential impacts the TRC would face should Dalrymple be removed in its current form. “We would continue to forge strong relationships with whoever is elected as our State or Federal representative regardless of the size of the electorate,” she said.
From Page 1
“REGIONAL electorates are expanding to beyond unworkable.” While anything is yet to be formalised in writing, Far North MP’s (including Mr Knuth) have been informed on some potential changes to the political landscape. Some of the potential changes mooted include the southern Tablelands becoming part of the Cook electorate, while Mossman and Port Douglas could be re-distributed to the Barron River electorate. Mr Katter pulled no punches in the aftermath of the vote, voicing his displeasure at both the Palaszczuk Government and Mr Gordon. “It’s a bitter pill for Western and North Queensland and I hope the Government and Mr Gordon can sleep well at night knowing they had the opportunity to do something right and didn’t take it.” In contrast, State Attorney-General Yvette D’ath said the Palaszczuk Government’s position had ‘protected the one-vote, one-person’ core value of politics. “By defeating the LNP’s Private Member’s Bill, (introduced by Member for Mansfield Ian Walker on the floor of the Parliament), Labor has protected the ‘one vote, one value’ principle which was at the core of the Fitzgerald Inquiry reforms introduced by the Goss Government.” In her role as Attorney General, Ms Dath will personally select the three person committee (from the Electoral Commission of Qld) who will construct the new re-distribution boundaries. Unsurprisingly, it wasn’t long until the LNP came out firing against Palaszczuk Government over the potential impacts to both regional Queensland electorates and residents. Shadow Attorney General Ian Walker said it was incredible that Labor has seemingly again forgotten those living in regional and remote areas. “Unfortunately they’ve once again dem-

onstrated they will put their desire to cling to power before the interests of the people of Queensland,” Mr Walker said. “For the Premier to claim no MPs from rural and remote seats had complained they had any difficulty getting around their electorates is a complete cop-out. “We heard the pleas from the Members for
Gregory, Warrego, Mt Isa, Dalrymple, Hinchinbrook and Southern Downs as to how their electorates were hurting, but the Premier and her Attorney-General have their heads in the sand. “For Labor to claim letter box dropping in a high-rise at Redcliffe is just as hard as having to sleep in the car between remote rural town

Katter mows in the city FEDERAL Member for Kennedy Bob Katter spent a portion of last Wednesday afternoon riding throughout Brisbane on a ride-on lawnmower. The point of Mr Katter’s statement in downtown suburbia was to highlight a recent case of perceived over-policing within his electorate. Mr Katter explained that he had been approached a gentleman named Tom Duddy, who lives in a town called Prairie, located 338km west of Townsville. Prairie is home to roughly 100 people and its major park within the town has required mowing for quite some time. Mr Duddy decided to do something about the issue, as there had also been some issue with deadly snakes in the area.
Upon riding to the park, Mr Duddy was reportedly pulled over by a police patrol car and fined for driving an unregistered vehicle, despite his harmless intention. “I can honestly say I’ve never seen a single person in the main street of Prairie,” Mr Katter said. “Yet poor Tom Duddy was on his lawn mower on his way to mow the local school and park – where there have been at least three deadly snakes removed in recent times – and was booked for driving an unregistered vehicle. “Tom Duddy was on the footpath. If this decision were to be followed it, has grave consequences for all Queenslanders who want to mow their footpaths.”

DUE to dwindling volunteer numbers, the future of Ravenshoe’s ‘Meals on Wheels’ (MOW) could be a non-existant one. A dedicated service - which helps provide meals for those in need of assistance – ‘Meals on Wheels’ cannot survive if locals in both Ravenshoe and the Tablelands don’t step up and involve themselves. How would you feel if your elderly mother or father was denied a regular safe food and wellbeing service because too many people in your region are prepared to sit back and do nothing? MOW secretary Julie Thompson said that typical volunteers for both the cooking and de-
livery services were active retirees, although they are very much interested in gaining younger members of the community. Committee members who make key decisions are also being sought after. A possible solution floated is for local secondary school students, who keen to gain work experience in the field of administration, could complete their work placement at MOW. If any schools or students are interested, Ravenshoe MOW would love to hear from you. These services are vital for those who are recovering from illness and injury. It also provides much needed support and camaraderie for those who are doing it tough. MOW has high dietary standards in both cooking and food preparation; and offers a

Tablelands regional division two councillor Shaaron Linwood said: “It would be a tragedy for Ravenshoe to lose such a vital service to the community which a lot of people have worked incredibly hard for over many years to establish - but as it stands, I’m informed that the service will be closing down at the end of next month. “I’d urge community minded people in Ravenshoe to strongly consider getting involved to try to save such a vital service to the community and would be happy to be involved in any way to assist.” To find out more, or to volunteer for ‘Meals on Wheels’ Ravenshoe, please contact Julie Thompson on 4097 7444

ished - to make way for progress and for future development, with increasing population. Time heals our loss of such heritage, however we did manage to save the Kairi Silos, via heritage listing. The majority of shareholders in Tableland Investments are descendants of pioneer maize growers that developed the three silo complexes. It was the same workforce that moved the igloo, after the war, to the present site. The Athmaize Workshop housed in the igloo serviced farmers through engineering and repairs to farm machinery. There is another side to the igloo story: As a shareholder in Tableland Investments, (the so called “dreaded developers” of the Silo Shopping Centre), I am insulted at being wrongfully accused of treating the APA with contempt and coercion with the TRC; thus leading to evicting APA from their home of 34 years and to then bulldoze, dismantle, and remove the igloo overnight. I am sure the public has heard enough of this mudslinging. We as farmers have feelings, and a genuine sentiment for heritage. I was totally embarrassed on behalf of our two southern partners and their encounters with TRC. David’s professional presen-
tation at a council meeting in trying to help the situation with the igloo was just in vain; and the urge of a round table conference all but ignored! This was after weeks of ongoing debacle and mayhem, which should have been professionally sorted out by our local council - especially knowing the TRC had full control of the situation. When expansion of the Silo Shopping Centre was approved by Council in March 2013, these were the words uttered by TRC Mayor Rosa Lee Long: “This kind of proposal is a terrific vote of confidence in Atherton and surrounds and is extremely welcome.” When councillors met with APA supporters during early proceedings, a particular councillor with a perceived conflict of interest in any further development of the Silo Shopping Centre was pushing for APA to apply for heritage listing. Our split Council (TRC) instigated the lack of communication between APA, Tableland Investments and TRC Officers, and in doing so - inhibited any smooth, forward planning of a simple situation between the three parties. The TRC has much to answer for, in sitting back and allowing APA supporters to throw all the blame at the developers when just a few years ago, the Silo Central development was extremely welcoming to TRC. Kuranda taps into new water reservoir
Special honour Margaret Black (seated in the middle, front row,) was humbled by her recognition.
By Justin Fris LOCAL education pioneer Margaret Black has formally received recognition with the Australian Honour System after three tireless decades of improving state education. A humbled Mrs Black’s award title was: ‘A member of the General Division (Order of Australia) for significant service to education through her leadership and governance roles’. This achievement has been achieved across a multitude of levels – from working in the field, along with establishing a greater platform for school parent and citizens (P and C’s) across Queensland. Along with this commitment, Mrs Black – who is also the Principal Licensee for Ray White Atherton – has donated thousands of hours toward countless community organisations and causes. Born in Penrith, New South Wales, Mrs Black spent the majority of her early married life on vast cattle stations in Queensland and the Northern Territory. In 1979, she would formally begin her involvement with the education industry, as she home schooled her children via Katherine’s ‘School of the Air’. Mrs Black fondly recalls about her children receiving some of their lessons ‘on video tape’ for the first time – with video players being a relatively new item in many households. “The (cattle) station was 400km away from town,” she said. “The ‘School of the Air’ coverage was good, but the signal would routinely get interrupted by sea vessels and the like.” The Black family would remain in the NT until 1983,
before they would return back to Qld and take up residence in St Lawrence (located 186km NW of Rockhampton). It was during this time that Mrs Black developed a real sense of a difference between children in small towns attending school, in comparison to children in larger towns or cities. Her passion was coupled with her role as a teacher’s aide. She would relocate with her family to Atherton in 1991 and would develop a passion for the school’s ‘Parent and Citizens’ (P and C) association – something which has never been lost in her journey to make education in Queensland a better place. “A good P and C is the result of the whole school community working together collaboratively,” she said. Mrs Black eventually would be involved heavily across several education-based boards and entities, along with being President of P and C’s Qld. Despite a heavy workload with real estate commitments, she has wonderful support from her loyal staff and dedicates plenty of time to several worthy causes in the community. It is individuals such as Margaret Black who have fought in the past to ensure greater rights and conditions for both school students, along with the overall viability and health of the thousands of P and Cs across the state.

Rod Marti launches mayoral campaign By Justin Fris CURRENT Tablelands Regional division four councillor Rod Marti has officially launched his ambition to become Mayor of the Tablelands Regional Council in 2016. Along with fellow TRC Cr Peter Hodge – Cr Marti is the second official candidate for the position. It is unclear if current Mayor Rosa Lee Long will run for office again – however many ratepayers do believe she will. A passionate advocate for community events – particularly in Yungaburra – Cr Marti has become a fixture in both indispensable leadership and guidance. During the last few months, he has raised questions of the TRC’s functionality and integrity during meetings; something he hopes to correct if elected as Mayor. “The Tablelands has so much potential and Council’s role in improving our communities is crucial,” he said. “If elected as Mayor, I’ll ensure that the best advice is sought - that the community is engaged and that deci-
sions are informed and well considered. He added: “I have a young family and this is the leadership that’s needed now to better secure their future.” Additionally, Cr Marti said that he would not be fielding a ‘team’ during his campaign, insisting that he would be prepared to work with any elected councillor alongside him. “I’m confident that the community will elect those candidates most worthy,” he said. “If I become Mayor, it will be my job to work with those councillors the community has chosen.” Upon the launch of his campaign, Cr Marti was flanked by several supporters; individuals from several industries, with a wealth of experience. One of these identities was local farming icon Guido Poggioli, who believes Cr Marti’s ‘all round’ experience will hold him in good stead. “His experience as a farmer, business man and in local government make him an ideal candidate,” he said. “I have no hesitation in endorsing his nomination.”

St Stephen’s Catholic College Presentation Night ST Stephen’s Catholic College held their annual lavish ‘Awards Night’ last Wednesday evening at the Mareeba International Club. The evening showcased academic, cultural and sporting achievement – and was co-ordinated and organised superbly on the night. William Snell undoubtedly recorded one of most memorable academic seasons in the Tablelands education history; and was awarded the 2015 ‘Dux’ of the college. This was off the back of Snell achieving academic awards in the following subjects: English, Chemistry, Physics, Maths B, Maths C and Health and Physical Education. Naturally, he also received an academic excellence award. Mark Wilcox also had a memorable 2015, with his academic year in the upper echelons of the senior cohort. He received the ‘Runner up to Dux’ award. Another worthy winner on the evening was school captain Joshua Priestly, who was awarded both the ‘Rotary All-Rounder’ award and the ‘Australian Defence Force Leadership’ award. Priestly – a natural leader, athlete and student – regularly donates his time to several worthy causes each weekend. Alexandria Struthers was recognised for her commitment to religious education and principles, receiving the ‘Sister Mary Stephen’ memorial award. Other academic awards of note went the way of Mellory Aitken (Mareeba and Dimbulah Community Bank’s ‘Citizenship’ award) and Kate Wilcox. Wilcox took out virtually every award possible, with an audible gasp of amazement filling the room when the full range of her successes were tabled. Not only did the Year 11 student receive ‘Female Senior Sportsperson of the Year’, she received subject awards for: English, Chemistry, Maths B, Maths C, Health and Physical Education and a Academic Excellence award. The room was treated to a couple of music and religious components throughout the evening, along with some words from the school’s Principal, Ida Pinese. “The world tells us to seek success, power and money,” she said. “God tells us to seek humility, service and love. “In celebration of our 10th anniversary this year, it has been an opportune time for our St Stephen’s community to reflect on the college’s mission statement – which encompasses the message of Pope Francis.”

What’s on at the Rising Sun Cinema
THE INTERN
Two of the most dramatic and exciting films of recent times, continues at The Rising Sun Cinema in Mareeba this week . THE DRESSMAKER has an all star cast, while Anne Hathaway and Robert De Niro are excellent in the lovely comedy THE INTERN.
70-year-old widower Ben Whittaker (Robert De Niro) has discovered that retirement isn't all it's cracked up to be. Seizing an opportunity to get back in the game, he becomes a senior intern at an online fashion site, founded and run by Jules Ostin (Anne Hathaway).
THE DRESSMAKER
Now a glamorous young woman, Tilly (Kate Winslet) returns to her small town in rural Australia some years after having been sent away as a child under traumatic circumstances. With her sewing machine and haute couture style, she transforms the women and exacts sweet revenge on those who did her wrong.
Review by Andrew L. Urban: The little outback town where the story is set is a shithole aptly called Dungetar according to the railway station sign we see as Tilly Dunnage (Kate Winslet) arrives all flash in her 50s glamour. (The dunny references may be missed by international audiences, but not by Aussies.) It is quickly apparent that this black farce is every bit as scathing and tragic as Muriel's Wedding, whose author and director J. P. Hogan (director Jocelyn Moorhouse's partner) helped write the screenplay based on Rosalie Ham's book. It's a story of small town hates, lies and betrayals whose victims are many but none so wronged as is Tilly. It's her story: she has a score to settle, and being a clever fashion designer these days, she does it in true female style - with warring wardrobe. You could say she came (back), she sewed, she conquered. The Dressmaker is the kind of film that might have been made by Pedro AlmodoPUBS, CLUBS PARTIES TO SUIT! var, both for its melodramatic story combluegotu@hotmail.com • 0450 433 450 plete with family secrets and for its wicked tone - as well as some notable excesses (eg Hugo Weaving's fetishist local cop Sgt Farrat [ha ha]). It is as risky, too, with deaths and disabilities crowding the frame. Winslet, co-star Liam Hemsley and Sarah Snook in her post-transformed state aside,
it is also peopled by decidedly ugly characters ... probably more than Almodovar would have chosen. The already mentioned cast as well as the remainder have given their all in weird and wonderful ways, sometimes defying us to even recognise them at first, eg Judy Davis as Tilly's wheelchair bound mother, Molly, whose physical frailty hides a sharp and fearless tongue. Sacha Horler is a scene stealer as competing dressmaker Una Pleasance, Kerry Fox is odious as the nasty Beulah and Genevieve Lemon is heartbreaking as Mae, the mother of Hemsworth's Teddy. Hemsworth himself has the hard task of playing a normal, handsome young man without notable flaws, always a challenge for actors to make a mark, while Winslet has just the right mix of chutzpah and vulnerability to make her Tilly a credible and dynamic character. Moorhouse has a clear vision for the material and a great team to help her achieve it, right across the departments, from the clever, sometimes unsettling score by David Hirschfelder to Jill Bilcock's unerring editing choices, Roger Ford's playful design and Donald McAlpine's wonderful lighting cinematography. Enjoy.

9-year-old Albina Niceforo from Mareeba performs on stage at the Townsville Country Music Talent Quest where she won the overall juvenile section of the quest.
Young Mareeba singer Albina Niceforo recently travelled to Townsville to perform at the Townsville Country Music Talent Quest, held on October 17 and 18. Albina’s love for music and natural talent saw her named the Overall Juvenile winner (8-12 years) at the popular talent quest. The annual festival is put on by the Townsville and Thuringowa Country Music Association and is a great, friendly competition with competitors travelling from as far and wide as Mackay, Charters Towers and Mareeba. Along with Albina, Jolene and Justene Ross from Mareeba, also competed and got the chance to attend a free song writing workshop over the weekend. Over the weekend Albina competed in four ju-
venile solo categories, with 13 strong contestants in each section. Albina received one first place and three second places over the weekend, which saw her progress to the finals. In the final Albina sang a Dolly Parton's favourite ‘Coat of Many Colours’, which saw her wow the judges and win the division. The judges commented on how Albina could control her voice so beautifully at such a young age, as well as being a great storyteller, and her diction and clarity delivered the story to the crowd. Albina is a regular member of the Walkamin Country Music Club and was named a juvenile finalist at the recent FNQ Country Music Festival ‘Talent Search’ held in October, where she received two first place awards and two second place awards in solo categories.

Stay quad safe By Dick Eussen Quad-related accidents on farms by recreational riders are a serious problem. Coronary reports show that most quad injuries and deaths are caused by the pinning of the rider under the unit. Injuries from front and rear flips are also common, particular with powerful 2WD quads. If you have concerns about inquiries and deaths from quad-related accidents a revolutionary Crush Protective Device (CPD) can be fitted on the rear cargo rack or the tow bar of quads. It does provide a mantle of safety for rider protection if the quad rolls, flips, or falls on its side. The ATV industry is against fitting quads with a Rollover Protection System (ROPS) and CPDs – possible due to economics rather than safety concerns. CPD systems are designed to prevent the rider from being pinned under his overturned quad from both back-flips and roll-overs. Some coroners have recom-
mended that ROPS system should be fitted to all quads. But a proper ROPS system requires a full cage and driver restraint, which is not feasible or even possible on a rider-active quad. ROPS are fitted on most side-by-sides and rough terrain vehicles – which are a totally different concept. But a Crush Protection Device (CPD) is worth considering as it may protect riders against roll-over, back and rear flips. There are a couple of different brands and models on the market. One is the Queensland-based Quadbar, a small unobtrusive U-shaped neoprenecovered aluminum hoop which is mounted on the towbar and supported at the back of the rear cargo rack. The use of the tow bar is not hindered by the Quadbar. The device reduces the risk of pinning the rider under his quad should a roll-over happen. If you would like to learn more, please visit www.quadbar.com.au

Enter digits from 1 to 9 into the blank spaces. Every row must contain one of each digit. So must every column, as must every 3x3 square.
Ingredients 2 cups granulated sugar 12 tablespoons unsalted butter, diced into cubes 1 cup heavy cream 3 teaspoons of Kosher salt
April 21 to May 21
Method 1. In a semi-deep non-stick pot, heat sugar over medium high heat, stirring often. The sugar will soon start to clump together. The sugar will soon start to break down into a liquid and you’ll want to switch to a whisk to get rid of the clumps. 2. Once the sugar is in liquid form, you’ll want to continue stirring and heating it up to 350 degrees. Once it’s hit 350 degrees, carefully add the butter. The mixture will hiss and splatter a bit. Continue stirring until all the butter has melted. 3. Once the butter has melted, CAREFULLY add the heavy cream. Since the heavy cream will be cold, your mixture will bubble and splatter a bit as well. Stir the mixture then let boil for 3 minutes. 4. Schools doing their bit for the Mareeba Animal Refuge
Mareeba State High School students and staff with the pet food collected during the week.
BSS Student Council representatives: Bree Hughes, Hayley Carlsson and Brooke Stewart present Jennifer Walsh with funds raised from the Free Dress Day.
Biboohra State School Student Council organised a ‘Free Dress day’ at the school on Thursday, October 22, to raise money for ‘Mareeba Refuge $50,000 in 50 days challenge’. The Free Dress day also included face painting for a gold coin donation. The students (86 of them) raised a total of $142 on the day, which was then presented to Mareeba Animal Refuge manager Jennifer Walsh at the school assembly on Monday, October 26. Ms Walsh addressed the school assembly, took questions and explained to the students what the Mareeba Refuge provides for our community.
MAREEBA State High School students and teachers showed true community spirit last week with a ‘Pet Food Collection’ to help out the Mareeba Animal Refuge. Organised by Teacher Tim Ralph, Teacher’s aides Margaret Ellis and Mechelle Pell, along with School Administration Officer, Fiona Lane, the week long project saw staff and teachers bring in hundreds of tins and bags of dog and cat food for the animal refuge. “After reading about how the local animal refuge have been struggling, we decided that we wanted to help out,” Mr Ralph said. “It’s important to support locals and we thought it was important for the students to show compassion for the animals and appreciation for the work that the animal refuge does.” During the week long collection, staff members and students delivered tins or bags of pet food to various staffrooms in the school. There was a great response from both staff and students and on Friday the food was delivered by the school to the animal refuge.
Community support for ‘Day for Daniel’ LAST Friday marked the 11th annual ‘Day for Daniel’. A national day of action to raise awareness of child safety, protection and harm prevention. It is about educating children and adults about keeping kids safe through child safety and protection initiatives. It aims to help empower our children to recognise, react and report if they feel something is not
right. Across Australia, thousands of schools, businesses, organisations, communities and individuals wore red in support and to raise awareness. One of these organisations was Mareeba Community Housing. The staff all dressed in red and also decorated their front fence with red balloons in support.

EXPRESS sPORT Nigeria send Joeys packing in World Cup
Josh Macaulay (MBA Deadleys) drives to the hoop.
By Justin Fris
THE Joeys (Australia) have been eliminated from the U/17 football World Cup in Chile, after being lashed 6-0 by Nigeria in their ‘Round of 16’ fixture last Thursday morning. It was a disappointing end for Mareeba talent Nicholas Panetta and his teammates, who had performed admirably during the group phase. Assigned against Argentina, Germany and Mexico, the Joeys managed to qualify after securing an epic 2-1 win over Argentina, coupled with a goal-less draw against Mexico. However, a date against reigning U/17 World Cup winner Nigeria was always
Deadleys blow their big chance By Justin Fris
THE MBA Deadleys were on the cusp of achieving a berth in the Mareeba Basketball League grand final last Thursday evening. With all the ingredients of a good season, the young team believed that this was their time to shine under lights. However, experience is something you can’t go to Cornetts IGA and buy a bagful of – and Hot Air had an ample amount of it when required. Hot Air would outlast the MBA Deadleys 41-38, but the latter only had themselves to blame. Ill discipline and infighting during time-outs amongst each other did little to seal the game in the clutch. Both sides made a hard and fast start to the match, with each player aware of the stakes. The Deadleys dominated possession from the off, however weren’t able to translate this success on the scoreboard. Luke Libke and David Hawke led the way for Hot Air, who had to reinvent their game style in a bid to gain control. Both the Deadleys (2/7) and Hot Air (4/15) were less than impressive with their field goal shooting, which kept the game close. Hot Air would reverse this trend early on in the second term, going a perfect 4/4 before taking a team timeout with 2min 50 sec left in the period. The deficit would not exceed greater than six points for the remainder of the contest, with both teams capable of making the game their own. Hot Air players appeared to be tired, however they had been in this situation many times before. They led by two points at the last change and quietly composed
themselves in the three quarter time huddle. Defence all around would tighten up in the final minutes, with Ashton Cater having an opportunity to bring the margin to within a point for the Deadleys with 15 seconds left in the game – he missed. The ball was then scooped up by Ezra Hawke, who would control the ball and ensure his side would play in this week’s grand final against the Red Devils. Devils players are no strangers to big time basketball and they sealed another grand final berth earlier in the evening, blasting a listless Comets side 53-22. Such was the dominance of the Devils, the sting had well and truly gone out of the contest by half-time. The second half resembled one of those awkward uncomfortable situations in sport. One team had well and truly qualified for the grand final and was keen to avoid injury, while the other was simply waiting for the whistle to end the match. Many questions will be asked going into this grand final. The Red Devils have been in grand finals before and tasted defeat several times. They are now 40 minutes away from glory; and they have the ingredients to secure victory. Is this finally their night for a deserved premiership? Or will Hot Air have one final rev in their engine? In the ladies competition, the Gummaz – who started the season with a five game losing streak – will face off against the Serial Killers. The Gummaz are another perennial bridesmaid on grand final night and it will be interesting to see if they can finally claim success on the big stage. All grand final matches will be held at the Mareeba PCYC Sports Hall on Walsh Street, Mareeba, kicking off from 6pm this Thursday night. Both junior and senior grand finals will run side by side.
Long term legacies from Croc Trophy event
going to prove a difficult challenge. Panetta and his teammates started brightly, however the result would be sealed with a brutal two minute spell by the Super Eagles. Livewire Victor Osimhen opened the scoring in the 23rd minute, with Kelechi Nwakali converting from the penalty spot only two minutes later. Osimhen would prove to be a constant thorn in the Joeys’ side, going on to score a memorable hat-trick and leave his fingerprints all over the rout. Although it wasn’t an ideal way to end the campaign, the lessons and experience gained by Panetta and the squad throughout the tournament will stay with them forever – and they will be better footballers because of it.
in brief
THE Yungaburra Boxing Gym recently had several fighters participate in the Mareeba Amateur Boxing Club’s tournament. Hamish and Thomas Nelson made their debuts, while Raymond Culpitt returned after a four year hiatus from the sport.
MEMBERS of the St Stephen’s futsal team were busy last Saturday morning in Mareeba, washing cars in a bid to fundraise for their upcoming trip to Brisbane. The school will compete in the ‘Champions of Champions’ tournament against strong metro opposition.
Local business stakeholders on the Tablelands were encouraged by the increased participation of the Croc Trophy mountain bike event.
BUSINESS stakeholders across the Tablelands are upbeat, after the recent installment of the ‘Crocodile Trophy’ mountain bike race. 2015 saw a record number of participants for the event, with 80 per cent of the riders flying in from overseas. This has a tremendous flow on effect for the Tablelands economy, along with generating excellent exposure for the region.
Tablelands Futures Corporation chair Michael Lawrence said: “Australia is a long way to travel for these competitors and they want to make the most of it while they are here. “It is up to all stakeholders including local councils, state government and tourism organisations to work together to strengthen our proposition, build and maintain new infrastructure and make this region as attractive as possible for other leading sporting events.”

Our own Olympic connection
Chris Shephard launches a three point shot.
Christine Doan sitting atop of ‘Dondolo’ during the 1992 Barcelona Olympics. By Justin Fris
MANY on the Tablelands would’ve heard of Christine Doan. She is an extremely passionate individual within the Tablelands business community and doesn’t shy away from asking difficult questions, irrespective of who they are directed at. But few may be unaware that Christine holds a very rare sporting achievement – something that many of us grow up dreaming, yet never manage to grasp. Christine represented Australia at the 1992 Barcelona Olympics in equestrian dressage – a sport dubbed (in her own words) as ‘ballet for horses’. But just how did a prosperous intellectual woman from Midland, Michigan (USA) find her way into the sport of dressage and entwine it with Australian life? Even as a young girl, Christine had a strong passion for both riding and being around horses. From an early age, she received lessons from her neighbour – a fabled Austrian rider, who had learnt his trade from an elite riding school in Vienna. Christine would leave Michigan at the age of 14, where she could go to college in Virginia. She would compete in several national competitions at championship level. “I was absolutely besotted with horses from an early age,” she said. “I never gave up my dream of working with them.” In 1970, she would leave the US and eventually settle on the Atherton Tablelands. While working and beginning her new life in Australia, her passion for horses burned brighter than ever. To fuel this passion, (several months of each year for almost 12 years), Christine would travel to Germany and learn the basics of equestrian dressage – including guidance from the then living legend of German dressage, Willi Schultheis. “It was an absolutely amazing experience,” Christine
said. “But an extremely difficult apprenticeship. It was a very good grounding – as at that time, the Germans were the masters of dressage. They weren’t shy in their criticism as they always insisted that you did things the right way.” But in Christine’s tale, it is the purchase of her German horse ‘Dondolo’ in 1987 that is most astounding. Here was seemingly a horse that no one wanted at auction; but Christine saw something different. She purchased the horse, unaware of what was to eventuate. “I’ve always like to think that I’ve had a nose for finding talent (laughs),” she said. “’Dondolo’ was the youngest horse at Barcelona (even though it was five years on) but my, he was a hot horse.” At the time of Christine’s qualification for the Olympic team, Australian dressage was the equivalent of the Jamaican bobsled team. Only two Aussies had competed before and they had finished dead last at both Los Angeles (1984) and Seoul (1988). With higher than ever qualification standards met (and selectors doubts proven wrong), Christine entered Olympic competition – and nerves were sky-high. “Nothing can prepare you for the nerves during Olympic competition,” she said. “You feel like you have the weight of the horse, your country, family and trainer all on your shoulders. “It is also quite challenging because dressage is all about attention to detail, with a look of grace and ease.” Christine would finish 28th in the competition, which placed her midway in a hotly contested field. But it was not the end for ‘Dondolo’ though. “I eventually had to sell him and he become a successful part of the Dutch equestrian team,” she said. “He helped them achieve a silver medal average in ensuing Olympic Games events. Christine is still very much passionate about her love for horses and can often be seen passing on her experiences and tenacity for hard work to others.
‘Top of the North’ carnival a success in Mareeba By Justin Fris
THE Mareeba Basketball Association hosted the ‘Top of the North’ local basketball association tournament last weekend. In a fun, yet competitive environment, the tournament provided an excellent opportunity for players across the Far North to showcase their talent across several age groups in a two game round robin format. Associations in the tournament included: Atherton, Cairns, Mulgrave, Mareeba and Port Douglas. But by far, the signature event of the weekend was held on Saturday evening, with Mareeba and Port Douglas men duelling in an epic struggle. Mareeba may have eventually triumphed 48-42, but the win was nothing short of hard earned. The Port Douglas side was significantly taller, with resulted in the home side changing up their offensive gameplan early on in the match. The hosts skipped to an early 13-8 lead, with the visitors simply unable to convert their promising offence into points. Despite only going 3/8 from the field, Mareeba was an impressive 3/4
from their three point attempts. Port Douglas went 4/20 from the field and 0/2 from beyond the key. Johnny Noble and Claudio Nespoli put in herculean efforts for Port Douglas, who eventually wrestled the lead back from Mareeba midway through the third quarter. The home side was getting good value for their effort during this period, except for the scoreboard output. Daniel Vecchio-Ruggeri’s effort wouldn’t have looked out of place at national level. He would tie the game midway through the final quarter with a longrange three, before Clinton Cameron weaved some classy offensive work under the glass. These efforts and more would see the hosts skip out to a six point lead with a minute left – with Port Douglas only able to foul to stop the clock. They would have one final chance to trim the margin to within striking distance, but Noble’s acute jumper bounced off the rim. Once the match had concluded, players and officials openly embraced and reflected on a hard fought game. Sportsmanship was a key part of the weekend – and it didn’t disappoint.
