Rule change to fix doc shortage By Michael Serenc

A

N archaic rule preventing overseas-trained doctors from working on the Tablelands is causing a shortfall in the number of general practitioners (GPs) available in Mareeba. North Queensland Primary Health Network chairman Trent Twomey said both Mareeba and Atherton are hamstrung by the fact the area is not allowed to recruit overseas-trained GPs, due to the region not being classified as a “District of Workforce Shortage” (DWS) by the Federal Department of Health. The map considers coastal towns such as Port Douglas and Innisfail as places that qualify as a DWS and therefore allow an overseas trained doctor to practice there, as well as access the Medicare Benefits Scheme. Under the Federal Health Insurance Act 1973, overseas-trained GPs must practice in a DWS for 10 years before they can go elsewhere for work. Mr Twomey said councils and the local community needed to lobby the Fed-

eral Government to classify Mareeba and Atherton as a DWS so foreign doctors could practice on the Tablelands and alleviate the current shortage. “There’s a lot of things that a proactive local government can do to stimulate the health sector of the economy,” he said. “If you’ve got a thriving, not-for-profit general practice network, it relieves pressure on the State’s hospitals which enables the State to use its finite resources to invest in those higher-order, acute services.” Amaroo Medical owner Dr Cheryl Harnischfeger said she had already noticed an increase in the number of patient referrals to her clinic from Mareeba Hospital as outpatient services there continued to feel the strain. “Already we’re starting to see referrals from the hospital advising patients to find a regular GP,” she said. “Because there is such a shortage of doctors, there’s no real bulk-billing facilities up this way. Tour highlights barbaric practice A CAR tour highlighting forced organ harvesting of minorities in China has taken its message to the Tablelands. The Falun Gong Car Tour stopped in Mareeba and Atherton last week as part of its pilgrimage across the region to highlight the plight of thousands of imprisoned “Falun Gong” followers, whose healthy organs are being harvested by the Chinese government. North Queensland tour organiser Gayle Steger said locals who met the group were sympathetic to their cause. “The people we spoke to were very receptive and shocked to learn what was happening,” she said. “So many people are not aware of this, and if our government does get pressure put on from their constituents, they’re more likely to possibly do something more.” The barbaric practice, which also ex-

tends to Tibetans, Uyghurs and House Christians, began in 1999 when then Chinese president Jiang Zemin outlawed the spiritual practice of Falun Gong over fears it had become ideological competition to the Communist Party. Falun Gong involves meditative exercises centred around the tenets of truthfulness, compassion and tolerance and once had more than 100 million followers in China. Those who continued to follow the practice were imprisoned by the Chinese government and subjected to torture while having blood samples regularly taken for organ matching. Falun Gong practitioner and PhD student David Yu joined the group on their tour to talk about his harrowing experience as a tortured prisoner in China. “I hope more and more people get to know the truth about what happens in

China, especially with the persecution of the Falun Gong, forced labour camps and forced organ harvesting ,” he said. “I was a victim of that persecution by the Chinese Communist Party.” Figures on how many organ transplants are carried out each year in China vary widely, with official figures putting it at 10,000 transplants a year compared to an

estimated 60,000 to 100,000 transplants a year – according to a report by former Canadian politician David Kilgour. The regional awareness tour, which also stopped by Cairns, Townsville and Mackay, formed part of a nationwide campaign which saw activists visit 200 towns and cities across Australia.

Auction items still up for grabs A CHARITY auction held in Cooktown last month to benefit the community still has several items up for grabs. A Bosch laser measurer, Canon printer cartridges (CLI-526) and gift vouchers to Opposite Lock 4WD store and Cooktown’s Milkwood Lodge are still available for purchase.

Auction organiser Lewis Collins said money raised from the October 24 event was still being tallied, with all funds going to 19 local clubs and organisations in the area. “It wasn’t as big a crowd as expected but it was an enthusiastic crowd,” he said. “We sold 96 per cent of the items

we had.” Russell House, owned by Cooktown’s IGA supermarket, also went under the hammer on the day, selling for $3000. Several Far North businesses pitched in with a variety of donations, including gift vouchers, camping equipment,

hardware and jewellery. A previous charity sale of IGA’s old shelving and stands, no longer needed when the store underwent a refit, netted more than $10,000 for charity. To purchase any of the remaining items, call Lewis Collins on 0407 189 459.

Doctor shortage hits Mareeba FROM Page 1 “Since we’ve moved into this new facility, we’ve very quickly taken on a whole pile of new clients and are just coping with available spaces.” Dr Harnischfeger said despite the demand, her doctors were still able to make time for emergency appointments if needed. “I’m waiting to see what happens with trainee registrars (doctors), because I know there has been an increase in the number of places offered and a lot of those will take up the shortfall in services,” she said. Within Mareeba, there are currently about 10 GPs working at Mareeba Medical Clinic and another six employed at Amaroo. Both clinics employ a mix of full-time and part-time doctors. Mareeba Medical Clinic’s Dr Murray Towne said there were several ways local private practices could attract Australian-trained GPs to the town.

“A possible solution is for Mareeba to grow their own GPs. Mareeba students already have an appreciation of the rewards of living in a rural environment,” he said. “Students considering medicine could possibly be offered assistance on the assumption that they will return to Mareeba General Practice.” Dr Towne said local practices should continue to offer training for medical students, which gave them an awareness and appreciation for rural medicine, in a bid to entice them to stay in the area. “Thirdly, general practices could continue offering training for registrars (trainee doctors) as they are already doing, again hoping the experience will tempt them to remain in Mareeba,” he added. “There have been several cases of this already occurring. “Promotion through appropriate journals would also give exposure to our attractive rural town.”

A Mareeba girl has wowed Australia’s finest fashionistas at the Melbourne Cup. Gracyn Marsterson was named runner-up at the Myer Fashions on the Field National Final last Thursday. The 19-year-old impressed the judges at Melbourne’s Flemington Racecourse with her white, off-the-shoulder cut dress complete with a striped daisy pattern and black fascinator, made by Mareeba fashion label Sonlia. “It’s becoming so real for me now, I’ve had a bit of time to process it,” she said. “It’s amazing.” The achievement capped off a successful Melbourne Cup Carnival for Ms Marsterson, in which she was not only named winner in the Victorian State Finals but also won the prestigious Oaks Day. The State finals win gave her a ticket straight to the nationals. Ms Marsterson said she was delighted to meet fashion icons and former Miss Universe contestants Rachael Finch and Jennifer Hawkins, who gave her plenty of praise. “Jennifer Hawkins said my

outfit was one of her favourites and she appreciated how far we had travelled from Far North Queensland,” she said. “It was an all round family effort. My mum found my shoes at Myer and my sister Renee Webb from Oceania Nails did my nails black and white to match my outfit.” Ms Marsterson said she was proud to represent Mareeba at the nationals, her home town never far from her mind. “My family and friends are there and I’ve had such big support and congratulations from everyone locally,” she said. The teen and model, who is now based in Cairns, said her recent achievements had inspired her to continue competing at race day events, which she has been doing since she was 13. “I’ve had a very good run this year with Fashions of the Field. I came third in Magic Millions on the Gold Coast at the start of the year and slowly, I’m getting better and better,” she said. “I’ll be definitely head back to the Melbourne Cup Carnival next year with the team.”

Club digs deep for charity Mareeba State High School’s Interact Club has helped out the Tablelands’ only women’s shelter with a generous donation. Students from the club presented a $500 cheque to Women’s Centre – Atherton last

week in support of the work they do to assist women and families who are victims of domestic violence. Mareeba’s community was shocked by the tragic death of Mareeba High student

Kelly Morris and her mother Pauline as a result of domestic violence in 2009, prompting the school to hold a dedicated week every October to raise awareness about the issue.

Tourist park cycling success

A TABLELANDS tourist park’s decision to capitalise on the region’s booming cyclist market has earned them a major award. Big 4 Atherton Woodlands Tourist Park won the Innovation Excellence in Tropical North Queensland (TNQ) Award at last month’s TNQ Tourism Industry Excellence Celebration in Cairns. The park, owned by Patrice and Quentin Fletcher, was recognised for its innovative mountain bike wash down and service bay which offers professional tools, bike pumps and bio-degradable wash products for cyclists staying there. Mrs Fletcher said she was “stoked” the couple had won the award after first building the service bay in mid-2014, which cost between $13,000 and $15,000. “It’s certainly a market we’ve worked very

hard to attract. We were thrilled,” she said. “We felt pretty humbled and privileged after seeing who the other finalists were in that category…We had some very stiff competition.” Mrs Fletcher said the park had reaped dividends in catering to the growing number of cyclists competing in local mountain bike competitions, generating multiple return visits due to the service bay and proximity to Atherton Forest Mountain Bike Park. The mountain bike park, which opened its first trails in 2011, prompted the Fletchers to think of ways to attract the adventure tourism market. “Our location certainly helps, we’re so close to the trails and people now know about the facilities that we have, we’re certainly very bike friendly,” she said.

“We host a lot of mountain bike clubs now from Rockhampton, Mackay, Gladstone and Cairns.” Mrs Fletcher said the park had also launched a mountain bike loyalty card in Easter this year, which gives visitors who stay five nights a sixth night of accommodation free. “It’s to build repeat customers and it works extremely well,” she said. “We’ve got about 60 members so far and some of those people are on their second or third round of visitation.” Mrs Fletcher encouraged other Atherton businesses to innovate and get involved in the growing adventure tourism market. “We’ve really tried to drive this market and follow it,” she said. “The flown-on affect into the Tablelands and the town is enormous.”

a TYPe of cheese manufactured by a Tablelands producer has been recalled due to an e. coli contamination. Queensland Health issued a recall notice for Gallo Marinated Fetta 250g cheeses last Thursday due to contamination. The cheese was available for sale at selected IGA supermarkets and small grocery stores in the Far North and applies to products with best before dates between November 6 and November 30, 2016. It is understood e. coli was detected in the cheese during an in-house company test. A Gallo Dairyland spokeswoman said the company was currently conducting an investigation into how the outbreak occurred and had put measures in place to ensure no further contamination of other products. A post on the company’s official Facebook page last Thursday tried to reassure customers after news of the recall. “We would like to sincerely apologise for any inconvenience this recall may have caused,” it said. “Please note all Gallo products undergo regular testing. No other Gallo products have been affected.” Gallo Dairyland is based at east barron, about halfway between Atherton and Malanda.

What 30 minutes of strength training has taught me! I’ve always loved Fitness, but I always felt something was missing…. I have been in the fitness industry for 22 years. I started my training when we were obsessed with wearing our underwear on the outside of our tights! Thank goodness times have changed. The early days were all about harder, faster – if you weren’t feeling sick, or just about to break – you weren’t trying! As much as I loved exercising this way, I knew pounding MY body was not sustainable – I needed a long-term solution. I had envisioned a centre where I could cater for nutrition, exercise and empowerment – giving women a space to make time for themselves. Giving women the knowledge to prioritize their health. A place where coming together for exercise meant leaving feeling enriched as you connected with others. I began to wonder… “What would happen if…” I put a vision and business plan together in 2005. In 2006, together with my sister (and business partner) and, after researching the best vehicle to deliver my vision, decided to take the leap of faith and invest in Curves. Little did I know, the seed was sown, and 9 years later – we are all about fitness, but I have realized my dream of promoting and providing WELLNESS.

Ends this Friday 11th novEmbEr education to better their health has been my focus AND reward. Seeing women - through strength training – both physically and mentally change, reduce medications and manage chronic disease has been a very powerful experience for me. I am continually astounded, grateful and proud of our staff, members and indeed my own achievements that have grown from that little seed planted with… “I wonder what would happen if…. ”

Kindy plagued by bats A GROWING colony of bats near a Mareeba kindergarten has prompted calls for authorities to take action. Hundreds of spectacled flying foxes are now living in Basalt Gully Park, across the road from Mareeba Community Kindergarten on Stewart St. Since taking up residence in April this year, the bats have been a constant menace, causing unwanted noise, smell and a possible health risk to children. The kindergarten has also been forced to stop using their outdoor creek and part of its yard due to the health risk posed by bat droppings. Two children have already left the kindergarten and committee president Kylie Patroney fears more could leave if the bats were not moved on. “There’s people choosing to not enrol their kids because they turn up here, they hear the noise, they smell the bats and they keep driving,” she said. “We don’t know how many enrolments we’ve missed out on for next year.” About 40 children are currently enrolled at the kindergarten. A paper petition urging the State Government to take action started circulating several weeks ago, attracting more than 100 signatures from parents and local businesses. A second, online petition began about two weeks ago asking council to take action, but a spokesman said there was little they could do as the issue was not “within our jurisdiction”. “Council only has the ability to try and move bat colonies under very strict guidelines,” he said. “The flying foxes are currently carrying their young and therefore council is not permitted to disperse them until such time as their young are old enough to fly independently.” The online petition has since been updated to lobby State Environment Minister Steven Miles

to authorise removal of the bats from Basalt Gully Park. Mrs Patroney said she was disappointed by the lack of action from council, despite kindergarten staff being in frequent contact with officers since June. “They want them to have somewhere to live, we just don’t want them to live across from the kindergarten,” she said. Tolga Bat Hospital owner Jenny Maclean has also inspected the colony and spoken with kindergarten staff about their concerns. The spectacled flying fox is officially listed as a vulnerable species, with infected bats able to give humans the life-threatening Australian Bat Lyssavirus (ABL) by scratching or biting. While not reported in flying foxes specifically, infected bird or bat droppings have been known to carry another disease,

Histoplasmosis – an airbone, environmental fungus which can cause severe respiratory illness or even death. A Department of Environment and Heritage Protection (EHP) spokeswoman said they were aware of the online petition circulating to remove bats. “The Queensland Government recognises the need for urban flying-fox roosts to be managed in a way that addresses both community expectations and the long-term conservation of flying-foxes which play an important role as pollinators for many native plant species,” she said. To sign the online petition, visit the “Mareeba Community Kindy” Facebook page and follow the links.

Green projects power ahead THE Far North is fast becoming Australia’s renewable energy powerhouse following news a second solar farm will be built at Lakeland and Mt Emerald’s wind farm nears construction. Solar project developer Lyon Energy announced last Thursday it would build a second farm next year at Lakeland, following on from Conergy’s $42.5 million solar farm, which started construction in late August. Lyon transferred the “Lakeland Solar and Storage Project” to Conergy earlier this year, and had already raised capital for their next project. The second farm will be four times the size of Conergy’s farm and will include an 80 megawatt solar photovoltaic array and a minimum of 20 megawatts of battery storage, making it one of the largest in Queensland.

“While we have onsold the original solar plus battery project in Cook Shire, we’ve taken the lessons we learnt during the three years of developing that project and are deploying this proven technology at a much larger scale,” Lyon Energypartner David Green said. “Battery storage really is the missing piece of the puzzle in Australia’s clean energy future.” Cook Shire Mayor Peter Scott said a second major solar project on the heels of the first showed confidence in investing in the shire. “Cook Shire Council has been very supportive of these projects, and they also tie in with the values we have here, for an environmentally and culturally considerate future for our communities, and increased energy security for future sustainable growth,” he said.

Construction of the project is expected to start in April next year, with completion in early 2018. Meanwhile, RATCH Australia officially reached financial close on its $360 million Mt Emerald Wind Farm project last Wednesday. The move follows approval from the Federal Government’s Foreign Investment Review Board (FIRB) in August on RATCH’s takeover of the project, buying out the remaining 50 per cent stake in the project by local developer Port Bajool. The power provider is 80 per cent owned by major Thai power generation company, Ratchaburi Electricity Generating Holding PCL. The wind farm’s 2400 site will eventually host 53 wind turbines, generating 180 megawatts of power.

RATCH claims that alone will be enough to power between 75,000 and 90,000 homes each year. Ergon Energy agreed in May to buy all of the electricity generated by the wind farm through to the end of 2030, with the site to be fully operational by September 2018. About 150 jobs would be created during the construction phase of the wind farm, with 60 of those to be sourced within the Far North. 15 permanent staff will be employed once the wind farm is operational, expected in September 2018, with the wind turbines having a lifespan of about 25 years. Minor works, geotech studies and site survey work are scheduled for next month with full construction likely to begin ramping up from March 2017 after the wet season.

THE Mareeba community has come together to mark the opening of a special memorial for infants who have passed away. “Angels Rest” was officially opened by council on Monday, offering bereaved families a special area to sit and reflect on their lost loved ones. Mareeba Mayor Tom Gilmore said the death of a child was a very traumatic experience and council wanted to create a serene place to lay infants to rest. “This shady corner of the Mareeba Cemetery has been set aside specifically as the last resting

place for the very young,” he said. “It is also dedicated to their families and is a place of reflection.” Council received support from the Mareeba Lioness Club, who donated a bench seat which was restored by volunteers at the Mareeba Men’s Shed. Mareeba Rotary also donated funds towards the project.

Police seized almost 800 cannabis crops at this property near Mt Carbine. PICTURE: QUEENSLAND POLICE

Community key in drug bust A GOOD Samaritan was key to helping police seize almost 800 cannabis plants near Mt Carbine late last month. Officers from the Far North Drug Squad and Tablelands Criminal Investigation Branch moved in on a property at Mt Carbine on the afternoon of October 29, detaining four men in the process. Far North Drug Squad Detective Sergeant Brad Grace said a tip off from a local resident enabled police to execute a search warrant on the campsite property, where they also seized about 80kg of dried cannabis. “The community is critical. The majority of our work is based on information from the public,” he said. The cannabis crop has an estimated street value of more than $2 million. “It’s a fairly significant seizure. The plants were ready for harvest,” Det Sgt Grace said. “We do find cannabis crops up around between the

Tablelands and Cooktown quite regularly.” The four men – a 40-year-old from Dimbulah, 43-year-old from Mareeba, 50-year-old from Atherton and 57-year-old from Bartle Frere – have each been charged with production of a dangerous drug and possession of a dangerous drug. They will appear in Mareeba Magistrates Court on November 14. Det Sgt Grace said those who engaged in growing cannabis were clearly motivated by money, which often outweighed the risk of getting caught by police. “That cannabis crop was worth a couple of million dollars on-sold, so the potential there is half a million dollars for each man, minimum,” he said. “But the risk is looking at a substantial amount of time in custody if convicted.” Det Sgt Grace said the production of cannabis had “significant impacts on the community”, including mental health.

Tablelands Men’s Shed Mareeba committee member Cecil Ayliffe with some of the organisation’s projects on display at Mareeba Library.

BELLY laughs, building and blokes being blokes are the aim of the game at Tablelands Men’s Shed Mareeba. The organisation will give an overview of their work in the community and the importance of men’s health issues at Mareeba Library tomorrow morning. Men’s Shed Mareeba committee member Cecil Ayliffe said the organisation provided a safe and friendly environment for local blokes while also giving back to the community. The talk forms part of “Movember”, an annual event run by the Movember Foundation aimed at highlighting men’s health issues such as prostate cancer, testicular cancer, mental health and suicide prevention. “It’s to make people aware of the shed and some of the activities they can get involved in,” Mr Ayliffe said. “We’ve got the equipment to do all sorts of woodwork there.” Mr Ayliffe said Men’s Shed had been involved in

several community projects around the town, including building Indian Myna traps and a wooden “Gratitude Tree” presented to Mareeba State High School last month by Margie Bestmann as part of the school’s Mental Health Week. “The best thing about Men’s Shed is the camaraderie and seeing how men change when they get involved,” Mr Ayliffe said. “It has a positive effect on guys who get involved. Even the wives notice a change in their husbands.” Mr Ayliffe encouraged local blokes to join and give it a go. “It’s like all men things, they’re a bit apprehensive at first until they come along and discover there’s probably other people at the shed that they know,” he said. “It’s a quite a free and easy environment.” Men’s Shed member Greg Sutton will give the talk at the library from 10:30am.

The LAND Cattle body welcomes report by ACCC THE Cattle Council of Australia has welcomed the Australian Competition and Consumer Commission’s (ACCC’s) interim report into the cattle and beef sector, saying it puts the focus back on producers and their needs to run profitable farming businesses. Cattle Council president Howard Smith said the interim report released last week echoed producer concerns and recognises the issues holding the beef industry back. “Cattle Council will take its time to consider the draft report and its recommendations carefully however, at first glance many of the recommendations align with key policies Cattle Council is pushing for and we believe will benefit the whole of industry, ” he said. “The ACCC have recommended the industry move to objective carcase measurement as soon as possible, which would provide benefits to both producers and processors, and create efficiencies across the supply chain.” Objective carcase measurement is key to moving industry towards value-based marketing, and away from the current price-averaging system. The draft report also recommended improvements be made to existing market reporting through standardising, to enable effective comparison to be made. “Easy-to-use tools and market reporting that can assist producers in making informed business decisions is essential to the future profitability of the industry,” Mr Smith said. Other findings in the report outlined the need for the Cattle Council and other bodies to lead a better flow of information and producer education surrounding price grids and carcase feedback. The council has already instructed Meat and Livestock Australia (MLA) to explore avenues for more producer education and will be seeking more information on the status of the project. The market study opened for submissions in April 2016 and was set up to examine competition, efficiency, transparency, and trading issues in cattle and beef supply chains.

Biosecurity Queensland officers inspect a Far North banana farm.

Banana farm destruction THE destruction of a Tully Valley farm infected by Panama Tropical Race 4 disease has begun. The Australian Banana Growers’ Council (ABGC) announced the destruction of the 138ha farm last Monday, with eight contractors currently on site. “Banana weevil borers are also being destroyed at the same time, as the scientific advice is that they too are a risk in spreading the TR4 fungus,” said ABGC Chairman Doug Phillips. “Banana growers know that destruction of bananas and the security this farm is not a silver bullet solution. The ABGC continues

to encourage growers, service providers and visitors to banana properties to be biosecurity conscious at all times.” Farm manager Phil Neibling is also organising security for the farm, including surveillance cameras and fencing. Pig-proof fencing has been erected around the entire boundary of the property, which is under strict quarantine. A second Tully farm was cleared by Biosecurity Queensland (BQ) of Panama tropical race 4 last month, which enabled the ABGC to press ahead with its $4.5 million purchase of the first infected farm. BQ officers are currently visiting Ta-

Maintenance day focus was on the tippler hydraulics, cane shredder, evaporators and repairing boiler leaks. The boiler work run over the planned time and delayed the factory restart from maintenance. blelands banana farms this month to check for signs of the disease. But Howe Farming Group environmental officer James Howe, whose father Dennis owns a 600ha banana crop at Walkamin, previously told The Express that BQ needed to develop smarter, more cost-effective biosecurity measures. Mr Howe said chemical sterilisation of footwear and vehicle wheels was “very expensive in the long term” for farmers, with property isolation, while also expensive, the best method of minimising the risk of Panama infection. EXPRESS sPORT Yungaburra boxers dish out pain

Epic hike for Mareeba ladies ADVENTURE: Susana Alba, Theresa Whiteing, Rosie Cifuentes and Allison Bryde during their hike through Spain.

SMASHING IT (L-R): Boxer Deyan Vasilev, trainer Ashley Cupitt and boxers Cohan Lockett, Zach Harris, Nathan Brkic and Michael “Mick the Weapon” Perks.

A GROUP of Yungaburra boxers have smashed their glory at a local tournament held late last month. Five local boxers weighed at the Gordonvale Tournament on October 29 with three getting bouts before going on to win three out of four fights. Deyan Vasilev showed his mettle by opting to fight in two fights on the night. The first fight was against Peter Fletcher of Toe2Toe, Cairns and was over in three rounds. Vasilev's fast combinations allowed him to outpoint Fletcher to gain a unanimous points decision. The wily fighter stepped back in the ring later that night to fight southpaw Brendan Ibanez of Ingham, who was also doing his second bout of the night. But Vasilev's speed and movement on angles won him the bout, delivering a punishing right hand blow that forced Ibanez to drop out with a broken nose at the end of the first round. The double win took Vasilev's career record to four wins from four fights. Cohan Lockett's first fight in the ring was against Oliver Hanson from Full Boar Thai Boxing, Cooktown. Lockett showed he has a lot of ability in the ring and held his own for almost three rounds.

The close-fought contest could have gone either way, Lockett clearly winning the last round before disaster struck. With just 15 seconds to go, Hanson accidentally punched him in the throat, Lockett unable to recover and retired from the fight. Nathan Brkic continued on his winning ways when he fought Damon Wessels of Mareeba Amateur Boxing Club. Wessels came out throwing a large volume of punches at Brkic in Round One but the feisty fighter weathered the storm by working behind a left right combination. Towards the end of the round, Wessels started to slow and Brkic forced him into the ropes before hitting him with a barrage of head and body shots. The attack put Wessels in a lot of trouble before a ring rope spectacularly broke and the bout had to be stopped for it to be repaired. The incident gave Wessels a much needed break, starting round two with a renewed burst of energy before Brkic took back control. The Yungaburra lad’s aggressive attack once again forced Wessels back onto the ropes before he threw in the towel. The challenging fight gave Brkic a clean three from three record.

A GROUP of Mareeba women have completed the ultimate hike – taking on one of Europe’s most famous trails in a thrilling 600km adventure. Susana Alba, Theresa Whiteing, Rosie Cifuentes and Allison Bryde walked a gut-busting 600km of the famous El Camino de Santiago trail across the south of France and Spain. An ardent trail runner, Ms Alba said she was encouraged to do the trail by her friend Mrs Whiteing, who had previously hiked parts of Nepal. The pair were soon joined by Ms Alba’s niece Ms Cifeuentes and her friend, Ms Bryde, flying over to Saint Jean Pied de Port in southern France in late September to begin their epic journey along the El Camino de Santiago. The 800km trail, also known as The Way of St James, is one of

several “pilgrimages” that can be taken by hikers to see the shrine of Apostle St James the Greater at the Cathedral of Santiago de Compostela in north-western Spain. While the group skipped about 200km of bland farm fields on their journey, Ms Alba said the experience was unforgettable. “It was just fantastic, amazing, challenging – a bit of everything,” she said. “It takes you over The Pyrenees mountain range, which were just spectacular… across Navarra, Rioja and cities like Pamplona, where they have the Running of the Bulls. “On our daily walk, we also went through lots of tiny towns and villages.” Staying at backpacker hostels, motels or rented rooms at the end of each day, the group battled

through soreness, pain and nasty blisters. “We set ourselves a goal for each day, which was anywhere between 20km and 30km,” Ms Alba said. “About 200,000 people do this particular route… Our determination and the views kept us going.” The group arrived at the shrine of St James in Santiago city on October 18 after more than three weeks on the famous trail. “We were so excited but at the same time we were a little bit sad,” Ms Alba said. “I was thinking “Oh my God, we’ve come this far and I can’t believe it’s coming to an end”. It was mixed feelings.” Ms Alba said the “beautiful” Cathedral of Santiago de Compostela also left an impact.

Khanacross tears up Mareeba

INTENSE: Cairns driver Riley Thompson tears up the track in his Toyota-badged Commodore at last month’s Khanacross interclub challenge.

MUCH APPRECIATED: Work for the Dole participants at Borzi Park last week.

Workers kick goals at club A GROUP of Work for the Dole participants are helping keep Borzi Park prim and proper. Workers provided by local employment agency Busy At Work have once again been mowing, watering and marking soccer fields through an innovative partnership with the Mareeba Bulls. Mareeba Bulls technical director Alex Srhoj said the program, which has been running for the past two years, continued to evolve. “It’s a great concept and it’s great for the club while the people involved get to try new things, work on projects and help the club look best,” he said.

www.theexpressnewspaper.com.au

“The club has put together three to four projects over the past two years from paving, fencing, gardening, painting grandstands, to now this time of the year where the program designs and puts together the six-a-side fields.” Current project co-ordinator Michael Curcio, who himself is only new in the work force, saw first hand the benefits the program has for the people involved. “It’s great to be able to allow the participants the opportunity to try new things, to be able to work on different things they would not normally get the chance to,” he said.

A WAVE of fast and furious racing hit Mareeba late last month during Round Two of the S & A Automotive Khanacross interclub challenge. The annual, two round series arrived at FNQ Motorsports Club’s Rallysport Park on the weekend of October 29-30, bringing a competitive field of 17 drivers from Cairns, the Tablelands and Mossman. After the first round at Mossman earlier this year, FNQ Motorsports Club lead the points tally 15-5, putting Tablelands drivers in the box seat for a series win. The severe lack of rain in Mareeba meant plenty of dust on the day, but that didn’t deter FNQ Motorsport’s Andrew Horn, who set five of the six fastest times for the afternoon in his very smokey, but very fast Toyota Corolla. Trevor Thompson finished the day in his battered Lancer with a fastest time on the last run at the very tight and rocky “Track One”. Mossman’s Heath and Craig Barry’s super quick Nissan Micra un-

fortunately suffered electrical issues during the afternoon, forcing them to drive other cars for the rest of the meet. Heath was able to share Shane North’s Laser, while Craig drove a spare but very handy Toyota Starlet. After a nice social evening, a hearty breakfast made way for Sunday’s racing, starting at 8:30am under cloudless skies. Andrew Horn was again out of the blocks quickly, setting a whopping six of the eight fastest times on the more open and flowing Tracks Two and Four, with Mossman’s Shane North and Heath Barry getting one each. Cairns driver Jamie Callard’s Lancer finally succumbed to relentless high revs, blowing the engine and finishing the day in a Toyota Yaris club car. Mossman’s Bob Errey, in his V8 Ford Fairmont, put on a spectacular display of car control, throwing the big car around the tight tracks. Cairns driver Riley Thompson’s move to rear wheel drive in the Toy-

ota-badged Commodore was also quite eventful. After another great weekend of very close, competitive racing, the points tally from class and outright places gave the win to FNQ Motorsports Club, 12 points to 8. Adding the points from round one meant FNQ Motorsports took out the series 27 points to 13. Results: Outright: 1st Andrew Horn – FNQ Motorsports. 2nd: Shane North – DSMSA. 3rd: Trevor Thompson – FNQ Motorsports. Under 1600cc: 1st Andrew Horn. 1600cc-2000cc: 1st Shane Buchanan – FNQ Motorsports. Over 2000cc: 1st Steve Van Der Brug – DSMSA. Ladies: 1st Kylie Portelli – FNQ Motorsports. Juniors: 1st Heath Barry – DSMSA.
