Refugee mission By Justin Fris
YOU only need to take one look at Helen Zahos to fully comprehend the level of passion she has for her job as a registered paramedic and nurse. Ms Zahos has spent the previous five weeks in Mareeba working at the local hospital, before embarking on the trip which will help shape lives
for the better. On September 30, Ms Zahos will leave Australia and head to the Greek island of Lesvos for two months, where she will volunteer her time by assisting refugees on the island. Lesvos, which is the 3rd largest of the Greek islands (behind Crete and Evia) has ample coastline and almost one million olive trees.
Despite beauty in and around the island, Greece as a whole, is in dire financial straits. This turmoil has been compounded, by thousands of refugees from Turkey arriving each week; which has seen resources stretched to the extreme limit. Ms Zahos (who has a Greek family background) recently spent time volunteering in the Phillipines, Nepal and also the mainland Greek
city of Thessaloniki. Once informed of the situation in Lesvos, she began raising money to help provide much needed medical supplies for the island. Passionate to make a difference, Ms Zahos didn’t want to go to Lesvos empty handed – so took the steps required to realise her dream. CONTINUED ON PAGE 3

Making a difference at MSHS By Justin Fris
A group of passionate students from Mareeba State High School are about to embark on a special journey. A school which is committed to both helping others – along with providing its students with understanding of other cultures – Mareeba SHS has formed a special alliance with Cambodia. Under the guidance of Lucy Daly and Tim Ralph, the students will spend time volunteering in low socio-economic areas and orphanages. “It’s our third trip – and we go every second year with our Year 12 students,” Ms Daly said. “They are going to be volunteering their time at a school and also an orphanage. “The school is in Siem Riep (northern part of the Cambodia) and we’ve also been fundraising over the past few years.” Mr Ralph added: “Additionally, we sponsor a little girl to go to school over there and learn English. And we also buy lots of food, rice, oils, spices; and we go around to some of the low socio economic areas and hand the items out to the families.” The Mareeba United Football Club are also big supporters of the trip, with MUFC Premier Men’s coach Alex Srhoj donating several footballs for the school – which will be passed on to Cambodian schools during the trip. The students are in Cambodia for a total of 12 days and will complete their trip during the upcoming school holidays.
Ms Lucy Daly, Alisha Sexton, Carla Newlands, Lauren Elmes, Alex Srhoj (MUFC), Aiden LoweBrock, Helena Kath and Mr Tim Ralph are all committed to helping those impacted by poverty in Cambodia.

MOUNT Molloy State School will be on the national stage on Wednesday September 30 in Sydney and loyal staff couldn’t be happier. Despite only 31 students enrolled at the school, the quality of education provided by Janene Harrison (Mt Molloy SS Principal) and fellow teachers is nothing short of exceptional. The efforts of one teacher in particular – Ms Gayle McGregor – have well and truly put the school in good stead. Ms McGregor’s application for the 2015 Commonwealth Bank Teaching Award was one of 15 selected across Australia from 230 entrants. Award criteria was based on teachers who are committed to instilling and promoting positive money management skills and practices in their subjects for students. As part of this success, Mt Molloy SS will receive $10,000, which will be put towards Ms McGregor’s financial education idea Pumpin Pizzas. The school already currently has a pizza oven, with Ms McGregor keen to establish a mini restaurant which will be used to host pizza nights for the local community. Along with these bold future plans, the community in Mt Molloy are already fully

aware of the bright and eager attitudes for hands on activities within the school. Regular cooking classes, compiling a healthy cooking magazine and tending to the needs of a new school chook pen are just some of the many beneficial activities that children in Mt Molloy are receiving during school time; with many more in the pipeline over the coming months.

Red Rose Day commemorated By Justin Fris
CARS who travelled into Atherton’s main street last Friday lunchtime were greeted by a sombre line of men and women in black. Each individual closely held a red rose, which moved eagerly in the unseasonal breeze – while rain drops delicately fell from the gloom above. Facilitated by the Women’s Centre in Atherton, ‘Red Rose Day’ was an opportunity for men and women from across the Tablelands to unite and show support for women impacted by domestic violence in Australia. This topic has heightened in recent weeks, with two major incidents occurring in Wacol (Brisbane) and Helensvale (Gold Coast). In the most recent case (Helensvale), a female was shot dead in a fast food restaurant dining area by an ex partner. Tablelands Domestic and Family Violence co-ordinator Sgt Andrew Osborne said this was the first event of its kind on the Tablelands.
“Red Rose Day commemorates those unfortunately impacted by domestic and family violence,” he said. “This year we have seen a higher prioritising of family violence across the Tablelands – particularly such a high number. “We are looking at ways to promote that domestic violence is not acceptable in our community up here on the Tablelands. “Anything that we can get involved with which promotes that message is fantastic.” As part of his role, Sgt Osborne covers a large territory; from Aurukun in the Cape, all the way down to Ravenshoe in the south. “What we try to tell people is not to just be a bystander,” he said. “We tell people to get involved. That doesn’t mean physically – it can be by intervening into the violence that is occurring; by taking some actions or steps to protect those people involved. “Be that by telling someone from the Police, telling a work colleague; or just making it

aware domestic violence is not just something that directly impacts those people involved.” Women’s Centre Atherton program co-ordinator Kellie Mills addressed the group prior to the ceremony and said she was pleased to see several men in attendance paying their respects.

Helen Zahos is about to travel to the Greek island of Lesvos for two months of volunteer nursing. She has been working at Mareeba Hospital over the past five weeks.
From Page 1 After growing up in both Darwin and Groote Eylandt, she knew from a young age that she wanted to help people in need. “After moving from Groote Eylandt, I went to school in Darwin,” she said. “After that, I went to university and studied paramedics; I’ve been doing that for about 18 years now. “I’ve always been interested in helping people since I was a little girl – so I guess it is just something that I have fallen into; and I’m really passionate about it.” Ms Zahos was also part of the Girl Guides
as a kid and she recalls many instances of being on the scene to assist those who needed it. “I remember one day on Groote Eylandt when I saw a little boy come running out of a house yelling and screaming with blood pouring out – he had actually slit a part of his tongue,” she said. “And from then on, I think I was just always involved with first aid and keen on helping people.” During her five weeks in Mareeba, Ms Zahos has been working as an agency nurse at Mareeba Hospital – a challenging, but reward-
ing job. “I assist with the taking care of the patients,” she said. “This also includes assisting with delivering medication and making sure their needs are being met.” Naturally in such a pivotal role, building rapport with patients is essential for a positive working relationship. Others riding off Borzi’s coattails Having been part of the group of concerned Mareeba residents led by Mick Borzi, I find it very disappointing (and almost unbelievable) that it could be construed that others in Mareeba had a major part to play in our de-amalgamation of the Mareeba Shire from the Tablelands Regional Council. Mick Borzi had the foresight to see that Mareeba would prosper by not being part of the Tableland Regional Council; and his realistic calculation of costs of de-amalgamation and successfully operating the Mareeba Shire have been the most accurate figures produced. In hindsight, I believe one must ask how the TRC and Queensland
Treasury Commission could have had their calculations so wrong. When Mick Borzi began the push to have our Mareeba Shire back, there was no public support for his seemingly impossible task; even after the TRC, QTC and at the time Minister for Local Government David Crisafulli did everything in their power to scare the Mareeba people to vote against de-amalgamation. We voted yes to de-amalgamate. As each obstacle was put in our path, Mick Borzi found a way to overcome and continue the fight for de-amalgamation. After the wishes of the majority were shown in the referendum, our small group suddenly gathered support from local politicians and the Chamber of Commerce; this was well after all the hard work had been done. The credit must go to where the credit is due - and that is to the foresight and leadership of Mick Borzi. Ross Cardillo, Mareeba

RESIDENTS across the Tablelands have an opportunity this Saturday to attend a magical celebration of dedication and hard work. In line with Disability Action Week, local community organisation FlexiChoice will be facilitating a special recycled art exhibition, which will commence at 8.30am at 130 Mason Street, Mareeba. Various types of eye catching artwork have been created by members of our community who have disabilities – however one particular piece of artwork will garner significant attention. After receiving thousands of donated plastic bottle lids, a colourful five metre display of street art will greet people as they arrive. Mareeba Shire Council Mayor Tom Gilmore will officially unveil the exhibition at 10am, however there will also be a raft of activities for the kids. There will be live music, a jumping castle, face painting, food and so much more. If you fancy a spot of tea, coffee or cake, your needs will be met. Along with this, the Country Women’s Association ladies will serve up their delicious pumpkin scones.
Support for this event has been made possible through funding from the Regional Art Development Fund (RADF), Mareeba Shire Council and the Queensland Government. Several local businesses should also be commended for their hard work in donating materials for the exhibition – these include Taubmans Paints, Tropic Coast Homes, Cairns Hardware Mareeba, Peter Braithwaite Painting and Decorating and LM Engineering. Russell Dufforn, who volunteers at FlexiChoice to help service users with acrylic painting, said it would be a fantastic opportunity for the community to observe a unique type of individuality. Lynn Potter from FlexiChoice said; “The event provides an opportunity to promote ability, difference, uniqueness and individuality. “There’s lots to celebrate including the valuable contribution artists with a disability make to the cultural community of Mareeba.” Some of artists took time out after a memorable ten pin bowling session for a photo opportunity last Thursday and they would love to see you there on Saturday at the community celebration.

Men’s Sheds across Australia are an integral part of many lives – especially in rural communities like Dimbulah. By Justin Fris
THE Abbott Government provided a much needed boost for Men’s Sheds all around Australia last week. Men’s Sheds across Australia provide an inclusive, safe and fun environment for people of all ages. These facilities are inclusive - are alcohol and drug free – along with not tolerating violence or bad behaviour of any kind. Prime Minister Tony Abbott announced that $4.5 million in additional funding would be provided towards the organisation’s ‘Develop-
ment Grants’ program. Initially, future funding for the program appeared very uncertain, with it expiring in June. However this added injection will ensure grant applications can continue for several years. Each year, Men’s Sheds have an opportunity to apply for up to $8,000 in grant funding across one of three categories, including: Tools, Equipment or Community Projects, Building Maintenance Development or Health Improvement Activities. Along with an opportunity to talk and enjoy quality activities together (for example table

tennis, darts and cards), many members also complete various manual projects; along with assisting with community events. Tablelands Men’s Shed (Dimbulah district) president Dean Thomas said he was excited about the announcement and was excited about the opportunities ahead for members at the shed. Activities are still running regularly each week at the Dimbulah facility and Mr Thomas said locals are always more than welcome to stop by and participate in the activities offered.
By Justin Fris LIBERAL National Party Opposition Leader Lawrence Springborg (pictured) spent time in the Far North last week, addressing several key issues in the region. Travelling with local businessman (and former Member for Barron River) Michael Trout, Mr Springborg spent time with LNP constituents, attended the Mareeba Saleyards and also met with various Mareeba Shire and Tablelands

Regional Council representatives. At the saleyards, Mr Springborg spoke of the significance of the Northern Australia White Paper and said he was confident a significant amount of money would flow into Queensland. “Unless the regions are doing well, the rest of the state can’t do well – it is just the reality and it is critically important that our regions are doing well in several industries,” he said. “It’s critically important as the alterative Premier of Qld that I meet as many Queenslanders as I can on a regular basis to talk about issues that are important to them.” Another issue of contention for Mr Springborg was the issue of new lockout laws which would cripple night spots in Cairns. Under the proposed changes by the Palaszczuk Government, nightclubs in Cairns would enforce a new 1am lockout – and would close earlier. “We’ve got to make sure that we get the balance right on this,” he said. “A balance of public safety, but also make sure tourism is protected; and that jobs are created for future generations in Qld.” Mr Springborg also commented on the upcoming electoral re-distribution, by imploring a balance of power to remain for rural electorates.

Take responsibility of your dog Voluntary Recycling Collection AFTER a spate of recent dog attacks within Service the Tablelands Regional Council jurisdiction, council powerbrokers are not amused. TRC Mayor Rosa Lee Long said she was keen to ensure all dog owners followed the basic rules and responsibilities of owning a dog. “Owners must ensure that animals do not wander beyond the boundaries of their properties - and if in a public place, dogs must be on a lead,” she said. “If Council officers catch a registered dog in the public, they can easily return it. Otherwise your pet will end up in the pound which will involve a cost to be released including the registration fee.”
TRC is conscious of avoiding water restrictions AHEAD of another melting-like summer in the Far North, Tablelands Regional Council Mayor Rosa Lee Long is urging ratepayers to use their water wisely. Level 1 water restrictions were initially removed in March of this year, although poor rainfall totals over winter have put the region back on notice. Mayor Lee Long said: “In March, Level 1 water restrictions were removed however lower than average rainfall and excessive use of water by some could mean the reinstatement of water restrictions - if residents don’t start using water more wisely,” she said. “Whilst it is great in spring to see beautiful gardens and lawns, avoid watering your garden in the middle of the day and having sprinklers or hoses on for long periods.”
Mayor of Mareeba Shire Council Tom Gilmore said today that he wished to remind the community about the opportunity which has been offered by the Council for households to enter into the voluntary recycling scheme. “This is an exciting opportunity for Mareeba Shire to begin a kerbside recycling scheme, in an attempt to reduce the amount of valuable resources going to landfill,” Mayor Gilmore said. “The scheme proposed is entirely voluntary and it has been determined that we require approximately 50 per cent of those properties currently receiving a kerbside pick-up for household waste to agree to join the scheme. This has been calculated on the basis of affordability and it is estimated that if we achieve 50 per cent of uptake, the cost will be approximately $7 per fortnightly service,” Cr Gilmore said. “Further options are available in the event that less than 50 per cent agree to take part. These options are more expensive and householders have been asked whether they wish to proceed at one of the other prices offered. I encourage all householders to take up this offer, which closes on September 25,” Mayor Gilmore said. “I believe recycling is an important initiative and if we act locally we can contribute to reducing our environmental footprint. I am urging residents to seriously consider this initiative.” You can opt in to the voluntary recycling scheme by visiting www.msc.qld.gov.au to complete the survey, email info@msc.qld. gov.au, drop in to Mareeba Shire Council office. Entsch supports Syrian refugee intake FEDERAL Member for Leichhardt Warren Entsch said he supports the Abbott Government’s decision to take 12,000 Syrian refugees and resettle them into our nation. “This is a good outcome and a broad response, which I think is necessary,” Mr Entsch said. “I know there are people out there who have been calling for a greater number of refugees to be allowed into Australia, but that in itself isn’t going to fix the problem. “With this move, we’re focusing on the most vulnerable – women, children and families from the minorities that have been most targeted. Let’s get them out of the camp system and give them an opportunity in Australia. “We also have to recognise that this will be at a significant cost to the Australian budget – about $600 million in that area alone. Therefore this needs to be seen as a financial contribution.” Mr Entsch added that all refugees will be required to undergo important health and character assessments – and said they would be most welcome to call the Far North or any other part of regional Australia home. “A lot of people will come over bringing their own skill sets and they would be welcomed into regional and remote communities, if they choose to stay there.”

Telstra expands Life in the Atherton Tablelands just got a whole lot faster, with Telstra rolling out a major expansion of 4GX services in the area, providing customers with access to one of the world’s fastest mobile networks. 4GX is Telstra’s new 4G service which is bringing extreme speeds and extra 4G coverage to a range of communities across the nation. The introduction of 4GX services in Glen Allyn, Kureen, Malanda, North Johnstone and Upper Barron will mean increased capacity for the local mobile network, giving locals improved and more consistent data speeds. This means more social media and video, in more places with less delay and less buffering. Telstra Country Wide Area General Manager for Far North Queensland, Amanda Albon, said the introduction of 4GX was designed to ensure customers continue to enjoy the best coverage, network reliability and consistently fast speeds as more activity, more people and more devices come onto Telstra’s network. “Our customers in the Atherton Tablelands are relying on mobile connectivity more than ever. The explosion in applications, shift towards mobile video consumption and use of mobile in commerce means demand for connectivity continues to grow strongly,” Ms Albon said. “We’re staying ahead of this demand by introducing 4GX to increase network capacity. This will allow us to continue to offer our local customers Australia’s fastest most reliable mobile service. “As the first carrier to bring 4G mobile services to regional Australia, we know how important high-speed mobile can be to supporting local businesses, tourism and making regional centres great places to live.” 4GX sets a new benchmark in mobile internet speeds in Australia allowing people to download, share, stream and connect faster than ever.

Children shine at Youth speaks comp Four local primary schools were represented at the “Youth Speaks” junior speaking competition, held annually by the Rotary Club of Mareeba. In previous years, “Youth Speaks” was open to Year 6 and 7 students only - however, with Year 7 students now attending high school, only Year 6 students were invited to participate. Now in its 17th year, the compe-
tition has proven useful for students wanting to gain further confidence as they progress to higher education. The two judges from the local Toastmasters Club (Peter Laver and Lee Schwerdtfeger) were very impressed by the confidence and character all participants showed while delivering their speeches. Charlie Martins, Director of Youth Services at Mareeba Rotary Club said: “There were four
schools from the region represented - Mareeba State School, Biboohra State School, St Thomas’s Mareeba and St Anthony’s Dimbulah - and all the kids did exceptionally well. It brings out their confidence and gives them that much needed exposure in front of an audience.” The Winner of this year’s competition was Lauren Schincariol from St Anthony’s school in Dimbulah.
Far North constituents head to Canberra
Federal Environment Minister Greg Hunt met with several Far North stakeholders last week regarding ‘Yellow Crazy Ants’ infestations in our region.
www.theexpressnewspaper.com.au
SEVERAL Far North federal political heavyweights travelled to Parliament House last week and met with Federal Environment Minister, Greg Hunt. The meeting with Mr Hunt was organised in order for him to gain greater insight into the perilous nature of ‘Yellow Crazy Ants’ – and the sheer damage and infestation they are causing within our region. Representing the Far North in the meeting were: Federal Member for Leichhardt Warren Entsch, Wet Tropics Management Authority executive director Scott Buchanan, Qld Liberal senators Ian McDonald and James McGrath, Federal Liberal candidate for Kennedy Noeline Ikin and local landowner, Frank Teodo. Minister Hunt was deeply engaged in discussion throughout – especially after hearing a graphic experience that Mr Teodo had to endure on his property.
“I woke up one night with ants on my face – spraying formic acid into my eye, which ate away at the surface of my cornea and left me temporarily blinded,” Mr Teodo said. “The pain was horrendous.” Mr Entsch said: “Minister Hunt committed to working with all the stakeholders - so we now have authority to approach the State Government – in particular, the Queensland Treasurer and Member for Mulgrave, Curtis Pitt,” he said. “We’ll also be asking the Cairns Regional Council and the Mareeba Shire Council to contribute – this threat has to be tackled at all levels, with a non-partisan and multi-pronged approach.” Ms Ikin said both meeting and trip were successful for all parties; and she also had the opportunity to put forward additional Far North issues while in Canberra.

The LAND Leanne’s dedication recognised at awards ceremony
The Torrisi family have had a busy year marketing their fine local product to the Far North.
Leanne Kruss receives her award from Fiona O’Sullivan.
Easy Cubes are putting Mareeba on the map By Justin Fris LOCAL Mareeba food producer Sebastian Torrisi is continuing to make tremendous headway with his iconic ‘Easy Cubes’ cooking product. The freshly frozen stock cubes – which are both versatile and virtually limitless to use with cooking – are grown and produced right here in Mareeba. It has been a big year for Mr Torrisi, who has seen his fine product not only become a household name with local producers, but also with national supermarket chain, Coles. “So far, we have a really good response,” he said. “Originally, we were planning to distribute to New South Wales and Victoria by the end of the year, however we have decided to stick with the distribution in Far North for the moment.” Despite only currently being sold in the Far North, Mr Torrisi is regularly con-
tacted by consumers from Western Australia, New South Wales, Victoria (and even New Zealand) who are all interested in his product becoming available in their respective market. Around $4 for a packet of 24 cubes, cooking enthusiasts are in good hands – and have the potential to add a new wave of flavours for all of their home or business dishes. Mr Torrisi, a man who is proudly local and keeping his product locally owned in Australia, is keen for consumers to provide feedback on his ‘Easy Cubes’. “We love to get feedback from local consumers – particularly on which lines of products they like or what they think we should be stocking,” he said. If you have tried Adfresh Farms ‘Easy Cubes’ and would like to pass on some feedback, please visit: https://www.facebook.com/www.adfreshfarms.com. au?fref=ts

By Justin Fris MAREEBA District Fruit and Vegetable Growers Association development officer Leanne Kruss was recently recognised for her commitment to the agricultural industry, after receiving the Qld Regional Rural Remote Strong Women Leadership award in Biloela on September 4. Ms Kruss – who was presented the award by Fiona O’Sullivan (Manager – Workplace Health and Safety Qld) – had no idea that she had been successful until her name was called out. “It was actually quite funny – I’d spent the last two to three days with Fiona and she didn’t let on that I had won the award,” she said. “She and I have worked really closely and I was amazed at how she managed to keep it from me.” Spending her formative years on a sheep station in northern Victoria, Ms Kruss eventually called the Far North home after completing her tertiary education in Sweden. Ms Kruss developed a solid passion for agriculture at a very young age – and it has held her in good stead since then. “Growing up on the sheep station, I lived with my father and three uncles,” she said. “Station life is very different and I was always working – whether it was shearing sheep or something mechanical. “I would wait to hear my uncle’s door creak and I would be up out of bed. I would join him for some
toast and get to work. Even to this day, it doesn’t matter what time I get to bed, I will always be awake and ready at 4am.” In her role as a development officer for the MDFVGA, Ms Kruss’s boundary is imposing, but isn’t something she has ever feared. She has had several traumas in her life which although have been devastating, have assisted her in providing unparalleled care and trust with those who confide in her. Along with support to whoever who asks for it, Ms Kruss has formed a solid bond with local schools – promoting the significance of careers in agriculture. “The amount of jobs in agriculture is simply incredible,” she said. “This is something I really try and emphisise with the students and they are often blown away. “All the schools have been really welcoming of me and we have worked in tandem to organise excursions to local farms for practical insight.” Working collaboratively with MDFVGA president Joe Moro, Ms Kruss said herself and the MDFVGA team have formed a fantastic team. “Joe’s absolutely adorable,” she said. “It was two strong minds at the beginning, but we work great together and are always able to bounce ideas off each other. “The entire MDFVGA committee have always been very supportive of me and my role; even more so, since the announcement of the award.”
Steady week at Mareeba Saleyards THE EXPRESS reports agents yarded 1287 cattle at the Mareeba Saleyards on Tuesday September 8, which was up 96 from the previous sale. Goodwill remained over the yards, with gains solid again for local graziers – a trend many hope will continue to the end of the year. Midweight steers sold well, al-
though they eased slightly in price. A line of 51 D3 scores topping 271.2c/ kg ($1,613.04). Heavier (750kg) steers were up dramatically number wise, with one C5 score settling in at 270.2c/kg ($1,675.24). Midweight cows fell up to 10c/kg this week, with 15 D4 scores realis-
ing 244.2c/kg ($1,337.44). Mid type heifers sold well, and made up to 258.2c/kg. Lighter types again dominated the bull component of the yarding and sold to a top of 205.2c/kg. 11 D3 midweights (500kg-650kg) fetched 266.2c/kg ($1,492.20). Sales are held each Tuesday.

The mill had a major steam off maintenance day during the week, which contributed to most of the downtime. The plant’s evaporators are also limiting rate. This week (Week 18), we plan to have a stop to boil the evaporators to help increase rate. The mill has now crushed 553,904 tonnes of cane at an average CCS of 12.04. CRUSH STATISTICS: • Mossman tonnes crushed for the week: 35,939 tonnes • CCS for week: 13.76 • Total cane crushed to date: 553,904 tonnes • CCS average to date: 12.04 • 2015 crop estimate: 1,030,000 tonnes www.theexpressnewspaper.com.au

What’s on at the Rising Sun
The school holidays are here and there's a fabulous line up of top family movies starting this week at the Rising Sun Cinema in Mareeba. Remember, you see them at the same time in Mareeba as the rest of Australia. BLINKY BILL is a lovely film for the young and the young at heart – and brings a favourite kids TV icon to the big screen. PIXELS is sci-fi adventure at it's best, whilst MAZE RUNNER – THE SCORCH TRIALS, is the second exciting film in this incredible new series, where the characters face their biggest challenges yet.
Blinky Bill – The Movie
The original storyline of the Blinky Bill character was for Blinky to have adventures that will stop the deforestation of the Australian Outback. The newest instalment of Blinky Bill (Ryan Kwanten) takes a less environmental stance and centres on saving his home by bringing his family back together. The battle is for Green Patch and the antagoniser is the evil Cranklepot the Goanna (Barry Otto) who wants to rule their little community. Review by Russell Mathews: Paws in' Popcorn, M&Ms and a large drink... roll the film... The weekend is coming and parents will be looking for a break. An Australian children's icon has been given new life
provide fathers an opportunity to chuckle (Grab your gumnuts and let's go!), but in the end this excursion to the theatre will be to entertain the little ones. Fortunately, the message is focused on bringing a traditional family and their community back together. There is no hidden agenda under girding the storyline that parents need to be weary of their children being exposed to. Blinky Bill the Movie is far from being groundbreaking cinema, but it does fill the need for parents who are looking for an option to entertain their children during the weekend. The animation and the dialogue are designed for younger kids, even though some of the humour was meant for older audiences.
with a CGI version of the young koala adventurer. Blinky Bill's story begins when he is a young koala and the origins of his adventurous side are revealed by following the example of his father, Mr. Bill (Richard Roxburgh). After his adventurous father heads off on his latest mission to save trapped animals in the red desert, he goes missing. The younger koala never loses faith in the return of the family patriarch, but while his father is away, Cranklepot moves into leadership of their animal menagerie home. Blinky takes it upon himself to find his father and bring order to their small community. Through a series of signs and death defying events, Blinky connects with a band of young outback creatures that help him to sniff out the trail that Mr. Bill took through the Australian landscape. His new friends Nutsy (Robin McLeavy), a zoo koala, and Jacko (David Wenham), a neurotic frill-necked lizard, help him to make his way through traps, feral animals and well-intentioned zoo keepers to stay on course to find the answers to his father's disappearance and save Green Patch. One joy of this animated journey through the Australian Outback is the vocal talents of the who's who in the Australian acting community (Toni Collette, Barry Humphries and more). to stomach T Unlike many of the animated films by Disney and Dreamworks, this film has a small target audience. Parents will be able to appreciate that this film is a safe option for their kids, but it is not designed for an older audience. There are a few jokes added to
Maze Runner – The Scorch Trials
In this next chapter of the epic "Maze Runner" saga, Thomas (Dylan O'Brien) and his fellow Gladers face their greatest challenge yet: searching for clues about the mysterious and powerful organisation known as WCKD. Their journey takes them to the Scorch, a desolate landscape filled with unimaginable obstacles. Teaming up with resistance fighters, the Gladers take on WCKD's vastly superior forces and uncover its shocking plans for them all.

So they send down the classic arcade games to destroy earth. They also get help from a military specialist. They have three lives and if all three get used then earth will be destroyed, and every time they lose a life the aliens take someone's life. Who will win, us or the aliens? It's an all-out battle to save our planet and everyone on it.

8 Ball Aitken – Tour in a Million
Multi-awarded global troubadour, 8 Ball Aitken, returns home for the ‘Tour In A Million’ this October armed with his eighth album, The New Normal, for an extensive four month all states, coast to coast road trip. 8 Ball Aitken is impossibly dedicated to his six string muse, and absolutely devoted to entertaining the masses at every show. He unleashes the party vibe with his funky, foot stomping energy, infectious blend of hurricane blues and driving country rock, devilish wit and endearing laidback charisma. Inhibitions dissolve and before you realise it, you’re on the packed dance floor, singing the chorus, sharing the spotlight and playing a red kazoo in unison. Aitken has garnered numerous accolades, awards, rave reviews and chart recognition since his debut album in 2003, Behind the 8 Ball. 2014’s single (She’s Going to Mexico) I’m Going to Jail from his seventh album Southern Hemisphere, crossed genres reaching the top spot on country and #2 on blues charts.
With two Queensland Music Awards and a Southern Star already under his belt, The New Normal has just been announced as a finalist in three categories of the Southern Stars Australian Independent Country Music Awards – APRA/AMCOS Single and Male Artist of the Year for the achingly beautiful ballad, Girl In A Million and Album of the Year. Since relocating to Nashville in 2012, 8 Ball Aitken has built a solid American fan base through multiple tours travelling the NashvilleMemphis circuit and appearing at featured shows in Texas, California, North and South Carolina, New Jersey, Connecticut and New York City. He’s also raised his profile during four tours of Japan and several other festivals in Canada and Europe – England (also live appearance on BBC), Germany, Denmark, Sweden, Norway and Poland. Other USA highlights include regular gigs at Loretta Lynn’s Tennessee ranch, recording The New Normal with musicians from the Lynard Skynyrd, George Thorogood, Emmylou Harris and Taylor Swift bands, having his songs placed in the soundtracks of prominent television shows Breaking Amish, Parking Wars and Justified; and appearing as an extra on the international hit series Nashville, where his unique posters are displayed as background art on the venue sets. 8 Ball Aitken will be playing live on Friday October 23, 8pm at the Kuranda Hotel, Saturday October 24, 7pm at the Cairns Blues Club and on Sunday October 25, 3pm, at The Shed in Atherton. The full tour itinerary is available on his website – www.8ballaitken.com.
Austen Tayshus heads to Atherton Austen Tayshus was born at Sydney’s first Comedy Store in Jamieson Street, in 1981. He stood up for the first time after a fairly precarious delivery, in March of that year. By 1982, ‘AUSTRALIANA’ was ready to record and it was released by Regular Records through Warner music in June 1983. It sold in excess of two hundred thousand copies, went double platinum and still holds the record for the highest selling Australian single ever. Austen Tayshus became a household name immediately and began touring extensively throughout Australia and New Zealand. ‘AUSTRALIANA’ was a hit in New Zealand too. Austen hosted the Narara Rock Festival in 1983 and 1984, which showcased many big Australian and international rock bands. Throughout the 1980’s Tayshus appeared with the biggest bands in Australia, as MC and as support act, including Mental as Anything, Inxs, Cold Chisel, Midnight Oil, Uncanny X Men, Richard Clapton etc. In 1984 Austen Tayshus sold out the Sydney Entertainment Centre, supported by local comedians. At the Countdown Awards in the same year he was awarded an Outstanding Achievement Award for ‘AUSTRALIANA’. Austen has been producing a comedy record almost every year since 1984. Most of these records have been nominated for Arias. Austen Tayshus has performed numerous

times at the Melbourne and Sydney Comedy Festivals and also at the Adelaide Fringe. He has worked all over the United Kingdom, Los Angeles, New York, Bali and Fiji. He has performed for many corporations and charitable organisations, as well as at many celebratory occasions including birthdays, bar mitzvahs, weddings and circumcisions. His work is improvisational and sometimes frightening, and tends to polarize his audiences, but is attractive nevertheless as he draws his audience in like a magnet. By the 90’s, Austen had moved to L.A. to begin pursuing a movie career. He had a small cameo in the Sharon Stone movie ‘SLIVER’ and by day auditioned for many big movies. By night Austen Tayshus worked in all the comedy clubs in L.A. including the Comedy Store, the Improvs in Santa Monica and on Melrose, the Laugh Factory, Igby’s and Carolines in New York. Austen Tayshus will soon be touring Australia and will be appearing at the Atherton International Club on Friday, October 2.

EXPRESS sPORT Declan’s spirit shines despite Stingrays loss
Rose receives her award from Paul Boyd.
Declan Ebner takes on the Hot Air defence, with many twice his height. By Justin Fris
THE Stingrays appeared to literally be a shadow of their former self last Thursday evening, with Hot Air running out 48-31 winners in the Mareeba Basketball League. Despite the loss (and without wanting to put too much pressure on him) the efforts of young Declan Ebner for the Stingrays were exceptional. After noticing the ‘Rays were down a player and needing a fill in, Ebner (pictured) took to the court against several opponents double his age and height. Zipping in and around the court, teammate cries of ‘Take them on Deccy!’ filled the Mareeba PCYC Sports Hall. Before the match tipped off, there was much intrigue about this contest as almost all players used to be a part of the ‘old’ Stingrays side. After last season’s title, Stingrays players and league officials decided to split the team into two – in order to even up the competition and give more high school players a chance at senior level. Hot Air started brighter, with Luke Libke at the helm. While the ‘Rays were busy adjusting their balance of youth and experience, Libke drained some important buckets to give his side a vital 16-8 lead at quarter time. Tyson Tatti began the game well for the Stingrays, with his early shooting keeping the ‘Rays within reach. The opening of the second quarter was anything but a classic, with both Hot Air and the ‘Rays trading gettable
shots. Darrell Turner imposed himself on the contest with distinction and despite the odd foul call against him, put his body on the line for his team. ‘Rays shooters could not get their eye in during the second period, going a disappointing 2/7 from the field. Trailing 26-14 at the half, some could be forgiven for thinking that the ‘Rays would completely fall away. But for those who watch week-in, week-out, they are fully aware that this is not in the ‘Rays’ DNA. They would trim the margin to eight points midway through the term and genuinely look like making a tilt at victory. Luck would finally desert the ‘Rays when they needed it most, who found it almost impossible to sink a shot in the final quarter. A brutal 40 second spell midway through the final quarter effectively evaporated any legitimate chance of victory, with the ‘Rays going 0/5 from the field. With another victory under their belt, Hot Air continued their march towards the final series. If they stay healthy, they should be in the thick of things. Express claimed a massive scalp, defeating the Red Devils 43-38. One must now ask – has the premiership window officially slammed shut for the Red Devils? In the Ladies A-Grade competition last Tuesday evening, the Serial Killers suffered their second successive defeat, going down to the Gummaz 52-40. Matches are held each Thursday evening at Mareeba’s PCYC Sport Hall on Walsh Street.

Overland sets high standard in ballet By Justin Fris
EXCEPTIONAL Year 8 Atherton State High School student Rose Overland has been officially acknowledged for her talent in ballet. Pictured above with Queensland Ballet teacher Paul Boyd, Rose received the intermediate bursary award from the North Queensland Dance Academy. Born in Port Douglas and living in Mackay til the age of three, Rose relocated to Atherton with her family. It was a year later, when she formally began her love for dancing. “I started learning to dance when I was four and my first Royal Australian Academy of Dance ballet presentation when I was only five,” she said. “I have been competing in dance eisteddfods in ballet from the age of six and have danced in annual concerts since the age of nine.” Naturally, talent doesn’t come without sacrifice. Rose has to ensure her school
work is always up to date, as some dance commitments can eat into her school time. “My typical routine each week involves going to dance classes in ballet, contemporary, strength and conditioning, pointe, jazz and hip hop four days a week,” she said. “I also assist helping teach littllies classes one day a week and in preparation for exams and eisteddfods there are usually extra classes on the weekend too. “Leading up to exams though I usually practice ballet syllabus work at home on my non-dance days. “Next year I hope to sit my Advanced Foundation exam in ballet, attend a summer school with Queensland Ballet and attend a dance convention that is held every two years in a different state. “I will still be involved in solos and groups at Eisteddfod and I hope I might be able to help some of the younger students get ready for Eisteddfod too.” Next year’s RAD NQ Bursary competition will be held in Townsville.

AFTER eight weeks of amazing skill, athleticism, team work and sportsmanship, the 2016 Tableland Interschool Mixed Touch Football Competition drew to a close last Wednesday afternoon. In a fitting tribute to a hard fought season, the two grand finals were closely contested. In the senior division, which included male and female students in Year 10, 11 and 12, Atherton High's Year 11 team defeated Atherton High's Year 12 team. The final score of 9-6 did not do justice to the pace and calibre of play on display in the senior grand final. In the junior division, comprising Year 7, 8 and 9 male and female students, Mareeba High overcame Atherton High's Year 9 team in a golden-point drop-off, six minutes into extra time. "The junior grand final was the best game of touch
Intriguing season for Mareeba Bandits football I have ever seen,” commented one spectator. In addition to Atherton and Mareeba high schools, Mount Saint Bernard College, Saint Stephen's Catholic College, Malanda High and Herberton State School P-10 all fielded teams for the competition, which was organised by Ms Katina Davis, a teacher at Atherton High. Reflecting on the event, Ms Davis thanked everyone who made the competition possible, saying "14 teams, six schools, dedicated teachers, keen students, volunteer referees, a community club and a great atmosphere - a great recipe for success.” Ms Davis also wanted to congratulate Rose Overland (Year 8) of Atherton High who was recognised as the Junior Sportsperson for the competition, and Matthew Cheeseman (Year 10) of Saint Stephen's Catholic College, who earned the Senior Sportsperson award.

AFTER an impressive campaign during the 2014/2015 season, the Mareeba Bandits are only days away from beginning their title defence. With a solid blend of wisened minds and youthful enthusiasm, the Bandits will take on United this Sunday afternoon at Kerribee Park (1pm). The club’s inclusive policy on giving youth a chance (along with bowling and batting rotations) held them in good stead last season and there is no current reason as to why this trend
won’t continue. 2015/2016 will also see the return of two ‘Tablelands Derbies’, with the Bandits facing Atherton (Nov 13-20 in a two day game and January 24 in a one day match) twice. After their opening home fixture against United, the Bandits will face two away trips in a row. They will face Rovers away (September 27), before travelling to Tully for a two day match, which could very well determine their season. Read all about this Sunday’s match in next week’s edition.

TWO weeks have passed since the second semi finals of the 2015 FNQ Premier League season were played at Borzi Park in Mareeba. And yet, it is a case of ‘as you were’. The Mareeba United Football Club will head into yet another Premier Men’s grand final, with arch rival Stratford the only thing standing in their way of more silverware. MUFC’s reserves will also have an opportunity to shine, after overcoming their semi final loss and defeating Edge Hill United 6-2; earning a rematch with the Leichhardt Lions. Many will recall the Bulls were victors 4-2 a fortnight ago against the Dolphins – who had Dale Goodwin and iconic goalkeeper Angelo Serafin sent off in the final 10 minutes. But even seemingly on the canvas, champion sides often find something special to climb their way back into the frame. With an inspired Matt Moss in goal for Stratford, the brave Leichhardt Lions were eventually turned over 5-2 in extra time. They will welcome Serafin and Goodwin back this week; however one wonders what impact last week’s 120 minutes of football will have on their bodies this Saturday night. MUFC Premier Men’s coach Alex Srhoj is keen to put grand final week and the match itself into perspective. “At the end of the day, we aren’t going to move heaven and earth this week,” he said. “It’s
a normal football match. You still have to tackle and do all the fundamental things. “We’ll have a good session with the Premier squad on Tuesday evening, as the lads have had a week off. “With the reserves, they have had a really good win and performance. But, we need to ensure they have something left in the tank. I’ve got no doubt that adrenaline will also kick in for them.” Preliminary weather forecasts indicate a hot day for all teams on Saturday, with the mercury set to hit 30 degrees; ensuring a humid afternoon and evening. “The weather conditions are definitely something we need to prepare for; especially in the reserves,” Srhoj said. “Leichhardt are a pretty young side and we haven’t played a day match across any of the grades for just over a month.” Mareeba and Stratford have had some intriguing battles during 2015, having met each other five times across all competitions. It all started on May 2 at Borzi Park, with the Bulls thoroughly impressive in a 3-1 victory. Only four days later, they would meet in a FFA Cup tie at the same venue. Stratford would go on to win this tie 3-1 and hand the Bulls their only current loss across all competitions. MUFC’s only trip to Nick Brko Field would fall during the month of June, where they travelled back down the Kuranda Range with a 2-0

win in their pocket. At the time, Srhoj would remark that this result was one of the most vital of the season – and continued an impressive winning streak at the ground. In the penultimate round of the FNQ Premier League season, both sides feverously battled out a 0-0 draw at Borzi Park. Despite the Bulls being crowned as league leaders on the night, many from the blue and white army walked away feeling confident of a resurgence in September. Parting company with Stuart Veall in late August was an unfortunate situation for both club and coach – however Rohan Rusch has worked wonders with the squad since his appointment. A very patient and calming influence in the dressing room, many wouldn’t have envied Rusch’s task of picking his side up after the 4-2 defeat, along with having two key men unavailable for the preliminary final. Stratford president Geoff Byfield was reflective in his analysis of the club’s season; although some controversy has filled certain parts, the club is very much united across the board. “Merging the two entities (Junior and Senior clubs) together has been very important this season,” he said. “We have had to make some difficult decisions during the year – but they have been all about supporting the players and I won’t back down from that.” Byfield added that Rusch will have a full

squad of players available for selection this week and was glad that a rematch with the Bulls eventuated. “As a club, we have total respect for Mareeba,” he said. “Rohan will have a full quota of players to pick from this week; so there are no excuses for either team. “Mareeba and Stratford have always provided a healthy level of competition and it’s great to have the two best sides in the grand final. “May the best team win.” In all matches both sides have contested throughout the year, variation of game style has changed routinely. Each match, Stratford has dominated possession in the early stages, forcing MUFC to play deep and defend. Along with this dominance, Stratford strikers have been provided with several early chances to generate scoreboard pressure. During the FFA Cup tie, these chances were put away and they had built a 3-0 lead by the 25th minute. In order for Stratford to win the grand final on Saturday night, they must ensure their through ball delivery in the middle park is executed effectively to Mick van Hooren and Joe Rusch. Srhoj will instruct his men to continue with their winning formula, which has been a solid pass and move midfield game, with excellent compact defensive pressure. If MUFC can control ascendancy in the middle and convert chances, more silverware awaits.
