ter Greg Hunt has committed to reviewing Mareeba’s eligibility to be classed as a District of Workforce Shortage (DWS), which would enable overseas trained doctors to practice in the area and gain access to Medicare benefits which enables bulk billing. Under current regulations, overseas-trained
GPs must practice in a DWS for 10 years before they can go elsewhere for work, leaving towns like Mareeba and Atherton, which don’t normally bulk bill, desperately short of GPs.
