Local IGA does it again A TABLELANDS supermarket has cleaned up at a recent award ceremony after blitzing three different categories. SUPA IGA Atherton came away with the SUPA IGA Meat Department of the Year, Fresh Produce Department of the Year and Store of the Year at the IGA Awards of Excellence on March 27. The awards are contested between IGA stores in Queensland and northern NSW. Store owner Mike Shakes said he was thrilled with the triple achievement, which follows a string of previous national awards for his meat department. “It’s an amazing result for us,” he said. “I think it’s just about consistency. We’ve won meat department awards six years out of the last seven. “There’s also a lot of locally bought produce in our store which helps with the quality and freshness of the product.” Mr Shakes said his beef, poultry and pork was

mainly sourced from local producers, while boasting one of the biggest ranges of health food and continental products in the country. “We do have an in store bakery as well, so it’s more about the experience,” he said. “It’s about the customer coming in here and hopefully getting everything they’re looking for.” Mr Shakes said his store was the “cheapest IGA supermarket in the state”, selling groceries at “Brisbane prices”. “We try and have a point of difference and I guess that’s why we keep winning awards,” he said. Mr Shakes also paid tribute to his staff for their hard work and dedication at the store. “None of this is possible without the great staff who help support what we’re trying to achieve,” he said. “It’s a team effort.” The State-based winners now go on to compete against IGA stores across the country in the IGA National Awards this July.

SUPA IGA Atherton store manager Tim Oliver was thrilled to accept three awards at the recent IGA Awards of Excellence.

A FORMER Mareeba farm girl is on the fast track to becoming a top legal eagle after picking up a prestigious role in the District Court of Queensland. Christina Fresta has been working as a judge’s associate at the District Court of Queensland in Cairns since January after blitzing an extensive interview process for the coveted job. The 23-year-old former Mareeba State High student has enjoyed a meteoric rise in her promising legal career, thanks to her outstanding academic performance at James Cook University in Cairns. Ms Fresta only graduated with a dual Bachelor of Laws and Bachelor of Business last month, achieving an impressive overall GPA of 6.25 and being awarded JCU’s Academic Medal for Bachelor Coursework. “I’ve always wanted to do law, ever since I was a kid,” she said. “I pretty much decided I was going to be a barrister. I was very idealistic and I’ve always wanted to help others and represent the little people.” Ms Fresta said her role, which involves recording the exhibits submitted in cases and the judge’s court orders among several other administrative tasks, was a “good learning experience”. “You’re doing a lot of different things while court is in session,” she said. “There’s a lot of behind the scenes stuff as well which you don’t really see, but it’s all part of making sure things go smoothly.” Ms Fresta said it was her goal to one day practice criminal law, which will require her to pass her Practical Legal Training (PLT) course before applying to be admitted as a solicitor. “My family and friends have been very supportive,” she said. “Mum and dad are definitely proud.”

Bulk billing review looming for Mareeba From Page 1 “Minister Hunt and the other ministers are fully aware of the current situation in Mareeba and have made a commitment to work closely with us regarding possible solutions,” said Mr Moore. “I’d like to reassure the Mareeba public that NQPHN and the Department of Health are both taking community and key stakeholder feedback on this important issue very seriously.” Speaking to The Express last month, Dr

Gillespie said he was open to the possibility of Mareeba becoming a DWS if it was proven there was a need. Cairns and Hinterland Hospital and Health Service (CHHHS) administrator Terry Mehan has previously supported Mareeba shifting to a DWS. In the meantime, NQPHN has contracted Dial-a-Doctor to provide after-hours bulk billing services in Mareeba and Atherton from May 1. “This is in line with NQPHN’s goal of increasing primary care options and services in the

region, especially in Mareeba, and is a positive step to increasing availability of after hours GP services, especially in peoples’ own homes,” Mr Moore said. “NQPHN also continues to work closely with local healthcare providers, the local community, other key stakeholders, and Cairns and Hinterland Hospital and Health Service to look into other options to ensure that Mareeba has other primary care service options to meet the needs of its residents.”

Northern Queensland Primary Health Network (NQPHN) CEO Robin Moore met with Federal Health Minister Greg Hunt last week to discuss Mareeba’s lack of bulk billing services.

Factory back down on foreign labour A MAREEBA chicken factory has vowed to no longer use foreign labour after concerns were raised at a union meeting last week. Baiada Poultry’s Mareeba factory admitted to using a labour hire company to source workers on 417 and 457 visas. It comes after a crowd of about 200 locals who had applied for jobs and some factory workers met with Australian Meat Industry Employees Union (AMIEU) representatives at the Mareeba Turf Club last Monday night to discuss the issue. Attending the meeting, Queensland Council of Unions general secretary Ros McLennan said she was overwhelmed by the turnout. “People were really angry about the company’s position in favouring workers from overseas on temporary visas over locals,” she said. “A lot of people told such sad stories about how they had been trying to get a job at Baiada Poultry for years or they had previously been denied employment at Baiada because a family member was an existing employee there.” Ms McLennan said Baiada’s argument that

they needed to employ temporary foreign workers because there was a lack of local labour did not stack up. “They’ve got egg on their face,” she said. “We know that’s simply untrue given the significant levels of unemployment in Mareeba. “There are jobs but locals are being excluded from them and that’s not right.” More than 80 application forms were filled out by prospective workers at the meeting, which have been submitted to Baiada. AMIEU Assistant Secretary Ian McLauchlan will also meet with Baiada senior management tomorrow to discuss the union’s concerns over foreign labour. “The company’s made early statements in this regard that they will employ workers directly and won’t go through labour hire companies anymore, so that’s good news,” Ms McLennan said. “It means all workers will be employed on the same wages, conditions and arrangements. “The outcome that we’re hoping for is not just they will employ people directly, but they

will prioritise unemployed locals who want work first.” Ms McLennan once more urged the Federal Government to fix the temporary work visa program by requiring businesses to advertise jobs locally first before being allowed to hire foreign labour. Cook MP Billy Gordon, who was present at

the meeting, said he sympathised with locals struggling to make ends meet. A Baiada spokesman refused to comment, other than to refer to their previous statement on the matter. Representatives of Mareeba Shire Council or the Mareeba Chamber of Commerce did not attend the union meeting.

New device helping students with calving AN electronic device which sends a text message when a cow is about to give birth is making life a little easier for Atherton State High’s agricultural department. Agricultural science students have been gathering data from the device, known as “Moocall”, which is being used with the school’s Stud Murray Grey and Charbray cattle herds. Both herds are bred using artificial insemination. Subject area coordinator Cameron Harris said Moocall was part of a suite of new agricultural technologies his students had been learning about. “We try and include some of the new things that are coming onto the market to give kids that experience,” he said. “We’re also looking at some heat detectors which flash with an LED light to record whether the animals are on heat or not as well. “The future of agriculture is basically heading to-

wards new technologies, such as robotics and drone technology.” Moocall detects when a cow is about to give birth through tail activity, sending an SMS to a registered phone with about an hour’s notice before the calf is born. The device is ideal for heifers expecting their first calf or those cows who experienced problems with giving birth before. Mr Harris said student interest was strong in researching how technology can help the agricultural industry. “We’ve got a lot of kids going into veterinary science at university from doing our courses,” he said. Students collect data during a cow’s pregnancy, such as weight gains, stages of pregnancy and changes in body development. “They are also looking at picking genetics for the next crop of calves,” said Mr Harris.

A COMMERMORATIVE wall which raised money for Cancer Council Queensland (CCQ) has finally begun construction at Mareeba’s Centenary Park. First proposed by local woman Vilma Moriconi in 2013, the “Wall of Hope” offered donors the chance to purchase a brick for $50, which could be inscribed with up to four names and would be added to the final structure. Cancer Council Queensland North Queensland volunteer partnerships coordinator Tina Dobb said the project was now “full steam ahead” with fencing erected around the wall site in preparation for foundations to be laid. “There’s been a number of different hurdles to the wall and we’re just all very happy that it’s going ahead,” she said. “The bricks were purchased by a variety of people, such as those who wanted to recognise people who had passed away from cancer, people that were currently undergoing treatment and representatives of companies in the area that are supporting those going through their cancer journey.” Mrs Dobb said the money donated by locals to the wall was given to CCQ to continue providing services to the community. A timeframe as to when construction of the wall will be complete is still unknown. “I’d imagine it would be done fairly quickly and preparations are already being made for an opening,” Mrs Dobb said. “I suppose the wall is a symbol for the community to reflect upon and hope for a cancer-free future.”

Construction of the “Wall of Hope”, which supports cancer sufferers and victims, has finally started at Centenary Park.

Major wind farm construction starts MAJOR construction of Mt Emerald’s $360 million wind farm has begun. Ratch Australia began small scale blasting on Monday morning to prepare the wind turbine sites. The blasting will occur over the coming months between the hours of 9am and 3pm Monday to Friday and 9am to 1pm on Saturday. The 2400ha site will eventually be home to 53 wind turbines generating 180 megawatts of power. RATCH claims that alone will be enough to power between 75,000 and 90,000 homes each year Works have also been underway in the past few weeks to stabilise the site’s access road and establish a laydown area, site office and prepare the Powerlink sub-station site. Ergon Energy agreed last May to buy all of the electricity generated by the wind farm through to the end of 2030, with the site to be fully operational by September 2018. 15 permanent staff will be employed once the wind farm is operational, with the wind turbines having a lifespan of about 25 years. Meanwhile, RATCH business development executive general manager Anthony Yeates said he was happy with Tablelands Regional Council’s recent decision to approve a material change of use to a condition for the company to start negotiations with landowners regarding compliance with turbine noise conditions

at their Windy Hill Wind Farm at Ravenshoe. “Ratch has been pleased to work constructively with Council and their planning team in the last 18 months to achieve this result,” he said. “The project continues to operate within the noise limits that were forecast when the project was first approved by the former Herberton Shire Council. “Tablelands Regional Council’s compliance discussions with RATCH relate to a confirming of TRC’s interpretation of that planning permit.” According to council’s report, in May 2012, RATCH committed to undertaking operational noise monitoring for a period of three months on surrounding properties and provided a monitoring report in October 2015. It concluded that turbine noise exceeded the conditioned maximum noise levels at a dwelling on Glendinning Road, identified as lot 228 on CWL 259. The dwelling is located on land that does not host turbines and the maximum non -compliance is 1.7 dB at wind speeds of 9 m/s. Lot 228 owner Peter Drury previously expressed his frustration in an email sent to Tablelands mayor Joe Paronella that council did not require his consent for RATCH’s development approval request. While the land owner’s consent is normally required for any develop-

ment approval under Section 371 of the State Government’s Strategic Planning Act 2009, council officers deemed it unnecessary in RATCH’s case, citing Section 371 (e) of the Act. Section 371 (e) provides an exemption to obtaining owner’s consent in situations where either it is not practicable to obtain consent due to a number of owners of the land or the requested development change does not materially affect the owners’ land. “I object in the strongest possible terms that I may lose my rights to object should ever the noise level rise substantially and should I lose this right, I would have no alternative other than to take legal action,” Mr Drury wrote in his email to Cr Paronella. “I don’t believe council has any right to shift the legal goal posts so that any non-compliant operation of any sort becomes complaint and then to deny potential objections.” Mr Yeates said RATCH took its “compliance obligations very seriously”. RATCH is 80 per cent owned by major Thai power generation company, Ratchaburi Electricity Generating Holding PCL.

A SIMPLE Facebook post by a Far North MP has seen one lucky cattle dog saved from death row. Leichhardt MP Warren Entsch posted to his public page on March 20 that he was keen adopt a female cattle dog, which would be housed at his Malanda cattle property. Within in a day, Australian Working Dog Rescue (AWDR) owner Di Edwards reached out to Mr Entsch, before suggesting he adopt Snuggles, a stumpy-tail cattle cross, at the Hawkesbury City Council pound in NSW. The timid pup, just 15 months old, was about to be put down after being surrendered by a local family. Thankfully, Mrs Edwards intervened and Snuggles arrived in Cairns on Friday afternoon. Mr Entsch said he was absolutely delighted to have saved the dog from certain death, and Snuggles was now finding her feet alongside his older cattle dog, Lizzie.

NEW BEST FRIENDS: Leichhardt MP Warren Entsch with his newly adopted stumpy-tail cross cattle dog, Snuggles.

“She’s swanning it around up on the Tablelands,” he said. “She’s got the most amazing personality. “A lot of these dogs are killed, thousands of them are destroyed every year and if people are looking for these sorts of working dogs, particularly up on the Tablelands, it’s a great option to adopt one.” About 60,000 working dogs are put down in Australia each year for various reasons, including not being cut out for farm work, getting injured and becoming pregnant. Mr Entsch said Snuggles would happily live out her life with Lizzie and farm caretaker Paul Beddows. “She’ll be a companion for Paul. She might do a bit of guard dog duty,” he said.

“We’ll see how she goes, if she’s interested in the cattle, we can let her do a bit of that.” Mrs Edwards, who used to live in Cairns where she founded AWDR with husband Carey, said she only found out about Mr Entsch’s Facebook post by chance through a friend in Mareeba. “I already knew about Snuggles in Hawkesbury and I knew of Warren’s love for stumpy tail cattle dogs after meeting Lizzie in his office,” she said. “So when I saw that post, I thought of Snuggles instantly.” Mrs Edwards said she hoped Mr Entsch’s adoption of Snuggles would help raise awareness of the plight of unwanted working dogs across the country.

Service to improve mental healthcare MORE than 30 recommendations have been made in a mental health review done by the Cairns and Hinterland Hospital and Health Service (CHHHS). The recently completed review, which CHHHS staff and unions have been briefed on, was initiated in November last year. Experts from outside the CHHHS looked at several areas of the service’s mental health operations, including clinical governance, workloads and infrastructure. “The delivery of our mental health services in the Far North is not where we would like it to be, there’s no doubt about that,” said CHHHS CEO Clare Douglas. “We have a team of highly experienced and dedicated mental health staff across the health service that delivers exceptional levels of care to some of the most vulnerable members

of our community. “But there are ways we can improve. Delivering safe and positive mental health services for our patients is our priority.” An implementation plan will now be developed in conjunction with staff, stakeholders and a Service Director, who will be employed to lead the implementation. A mental health steering committee has also been appointed and a plan developed to provide extra resourcing to support managers to develop and deliver actions from the report. “We will continue to work with our staff and stakeholders to become leaders in the delivery of mental health services and develop an environment of continuous improvement that empowers our people to deliver the very best care,” she said. The 33 recommendations will now be considered by CHHHS executive.

A UNIQUE aviation safety video miniseries for visual flight rules pilots has been released by the Civil Aviation Safety Authority (CASA). The 10 part series covers a 3350 nautical mile trip from western NSW, through outback Queensland to Cape York, down the Queensland coast and back across country to Bathurst. The journey provides a hands-on explanation of nearly 30 safety topics critical to all stages of flight. These include knowing your aircraft, weight and balance, fuel management, remote flying, fatigue management, radio calls, ageing aircraft, bird strikes, remotely piloted aircraft, emergency procedures and electronic flight bags. The safety information is delivered

during interviews with local aviation people with expertise in each topic. Those interviewed include people with experience in outback flying, remote aerodrome refuellers, a Royal Flying Doctor representative, an air traffic controller, local pilots, a helicopter mustering pilot and a licensed aircraft maintenance engineer. The online videos feature stunning footage taken from cameras mounted on a Cessna 172 flown by chief flying instructor Catherine Fitzsimons. CASA acting CEO and Director of Aviation Safety Shane Carmody said the new video series was an important tool to help all visual flight rules pilots operate safely in a wide variety of environments. Students also heard a personal account from a road crash survivor of how just a few seconds or one wrong decision can be lifechanging. “It’s about reducing the risks on the road,” said Mareeba Rotary’s RYDA coordinator Charlie Martens. “The skills of critical thinking and an understanding and appreciation for safety on the road – both as drivers and potentially highly-influential passengers – is important. “In 12 months time they will all be in charge of a car, so we hope today has provided them with valuable information and tools on road safety. “If we can save one life or stop someone getting hurt, then the program is all worthwhile. “The community support we receive to put the program on is amazing. “We hope all the students have learned something.”

A ROTARY program providing vital road safety education for high schoolers has powered ahead into its eighth year. Since 2009, more than 1000 students have taken part in the Rotary Youth Driver Awareness (RYDA) program held in Mareeba every year. Last week saw another 100 Year 11 students from Mareeba State High School complete the one-day intensive program. The RYDA program aims to reduce death and injury amongst young people on our roads and with most on the brink of becoming learner drivers, it teaches students about how the choices they make behind the wheel can prove fatal. While driving brings independence, freedom and new life skills, it also brings responsibility to not only drivers, but to passengers. Driver behaviour and what happens on the road when poor choices are made was displayed in a series of confronting sessions. The students received first-hand experience at judging safe stopping dis-

Health boss says hospital is safe COALFACE: Cairns and Hinterland Hospital and Health Service administrator Terry Mehan addresses the Mareeba Chamber of Commerce luncheon last Monday.

THE Cairns and Hinterland Hospital and Health Service (CHHHS) have once again hosed down concerns Mareeba Hospital’s health services will be downgraded. CHHHS administrator Terry Mehan addressed a Mareeba Chamber of Commerce luncheon last Monday, reassuring the crowd that the hospital’s existing services would not be affected, despite a $2.1 million cut in Council of Australian Governments (COAG) funding coming in October. The funding relates to Section 19(2) of the Health Insurance Act 1973, which provides an exemption for certain hospitals to claim against the Medicare Benefits Schedule (MBS) for non-admitted, non-referred professional services provided in emergency departments, such as outpatient (GP) services. But Mareeba, which has had that exemption since 2006, is now no longer eligible because of the increase in its population. “There are no plans to close or downgrade the services we currently provide at Mareeba Hospital and we are working with the Northern Queensland Primary Health Network to engage with GPs in planning how services will be managed beyond October 2017, once the Federal Government’s COAG 19(2) exemption has expired,” Mr Mehan told The Express. “All stakeholders involved are committed to ensuring the Mareeba community is no worse off, no patient is disadvantaged and no permanent staff member will lose their job. We are also committed to working with our temporary staff to look at future employment options available.” Mareeba Hospital employs 14 staff on COAG contracts, with eight of those permanent full-time. However, the remaining six temporary administration staff may be assigned new roles once the COAG funding is cut in October. Mr Mehan said the Northern Queensland Primary Health Network was leading consultation with local GPs to work up a number of options for Mareeba’s future outpatient (GP) services model by the end of April. Mareeba mayor Tom Gilmore said Mr Mehan’s address at the luncheon was “a breath of fresh air” in what was otherwise a complex issue.

“Terry was clear and concise and able to answer the questions that were asked by the community,” he said. “I expect that the majority of people in the room left there with some sense of hope that the message has got through to the decision-makers in Queensland Health about the determination of our community to have the level of service at Mareeba hospital maintained and improved over time.” But Cr Gilmore warned the local community “must remain vigilant” over future health services in the area. “We must never take anything for granted anymore about the provision of health services in our district,” he said. “Because the future is complex, I don’t think anybody can sensibly predict what it’s going to look like after October, other than to say the health service is aware and are working diligently towards delivery of services after October 1.” Chamber president Joe Moro thanked Mr Mehan for addressing the luncheon and said he wanted to hold the CHHHS accountable for their reassurances over health services at Mareeba Hospital. “I think everybody that’s passionate about this issue wants the best possible outcome to have the best hospital we possibly can, which should be adequately funded,” he said. “The Chamber will engage with the Northern Queensland Primary Health Network to make sure the best interests of the hospital and community are protected.” Mr Moro welcomed news bulk-billing home service Dial-A-Doctor would soon begin a trial in Mareeba and Atherton, but said that would only be part of the solution to what a future GP services model could look like in the region once the COAG funding lapses. “It shouldn’t be the only initiative we look at and it shouldn’t be the end of the discussion,” he said. “We shouldn’t just rest on our laurels…There’s a lot of talk about different models that are going to be put in place and we need to make sure they are in place come October 1.”

Northern beef agreement signed AN agreement signed between several key beef and agricultural groups will aim to harness more trade opportunities for Northern Australia. The Cattle Council of Australia, AgForce Queensland, the Northern Territory Cattlemen’s Association and Pastoralists and Graziers Association of Western Australia have all joined forces to sign a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) on a new “Northern Australia Beef Plan”. Cattle Council president Howard Smith said the plan, also known as Beef Plan North, will leverage “the key initiatives already being developed across the north to maximise the impact for the beef industry”. “The plan will complement the Meat Industry Strategic Plan (MISP2020) and will be underpinned by existing government and industry research to ensure investment in the north can have the biggest effect whilst protecting the integrity and biosecurity of the region,” he said. Northern Australia Minister Matt Canavan and Northern Territory Primary Industries and Resources Minister Ken Vowles witnessed the signing of the MoU at the Northern Territory Cattlemen’s Association (NTCA) annual conference in Darwin last Friday.

www.theexpressnewspaper.com.au

NTCA CEO Tracey Hayes said the push for the plan, an overarching strategy for one of northern Australia’s key industries, was aimed at meeting the great opportunities and challenges ahead. “We want to position ourselves to drive a new era of development, growth and innovation for all of Australia. That’s a vast area,” said Ms Hayes. “It’s crucial that we make a collaborative effort for the mutual benefit of us all.” The plan covers the region north of the Tropic of Capricorn and covers the existing government and industry research conducted to assess where investment in the north can offer the highest return. The plan encourages innovative thinking and targeted investment programs to unlock significant growth potential. The northern beef industry contributes more than $2.8 billion a year directly to the Australian economy and make up 57 per cent of the regions total agricultural production. The area holds more than 11.7 million head of cattle, making up over 45 per cent of the national herd.

1/4 cup shredded cheese 1 large egg Salt and Pepper for seasoning Olive oil for cooking

Method 1. First, cook your quinoa according to the directions on the packaging or cook by combining 1/2 cup of quinoa with 1 cup of boiling water, then letting it come to a boil, and simmering, covered for about 15 minutes. Once the quinoa has absorbed all the water, put it on a plate and let it cool completely. 2. Next, saute your diced onion until it’s soft and translucent. Set aside and let cool completely. Cook your broccoli until it has softened a little bit, then let it cool as well. Once the broccoli has cooled completely, dice it into small pieces. 3. Now that you have everything ready, in a large bowl, mix all the ingredients together, leaving the egg until the end. Mix well so you have a smooth, wet mixture that will allow you to make patties that will stick together. 4. Heat some olive oil in a pan, and make your patties. I made each using 1/4 cup of the mixture. Just make a ball out of the mixture, and squash it down a little bit. Cook each patty for about 7 – 8 minutes on each side on medium heat. You want the patty to develop a crust, but not to burn, so watch them carefully. Let cool for a couple of minutes before eating.

Atherton cricket celebrates end of season ATHERTON junior and senior cricket have wrapped up their season, with a number of standout performers. Coaches made presentations to each and every one of the players in the junior grades, with achievement awards handed out for Most Runs, Most Wickets and Team Player in the individual age groups. A very special presentation was made by Veronica Lunn at the junior presentation, who presented Levi Poggioli with the inaugural Neil Lunn Memorial U12 Encouragement Award. The award is in honour of the late Neil Lunn, a life member and club stalwart who filled numerous positions during his many years of playing, coaching and service to the club. Both U14 and U16 sides were winners in the Cricket Far North competition, the U14’s completing their season with only one loss and the U16’s taking out the premiership for the second successive season. It was a great effort by the players and a tribute to the coaches and volunteers who have supported them throughout the season. The “Milo in2cricket” program proved popular once again, with about 35 eager young cricketers learning the basics in a fun environment under the guidance of Graeme Lamperd and his band of helpers.

In the seniors, Player of the Year was awarded on a points basis, with a tight run race between Tom Boorman and Paul Nasser, who both contributed with the bat and the ball throughout the season. The Johnathan Shanahan Memorial Trophy is awarded to an U21 player on the same basis as Player of the Year and was collected by Paul Nasser for the second successive season. First grade captain Peter Sceresini took out most runs, capping off a great season which saw him join Dan Parnell and Gerard Fox in the Cricket Far North T20 team which took out the Bulls Masters T20 Country Challenge at the Gabba in December. Regular first grade young guns Paul Nasser, Kyle Bing Chew and Caleb Constant were also selected for rep duties with Cricket Far North, along with Darcy Houlihan who featured strongly with the bat in third grade. Third grade Player of the Year Paul Moss starred with two centuries, while Rhys Thomas took home the bowling trophy with 15 wickets at an average of 24. Fox continues to be the club’s most decorated rep player of the modern era with selection in the Queensland Country Brahmans team again this season. Queensland brought home the Australian Country Championship trophy in January.

Wadley does the double STANDOUTS: (L-R) Mareeba gymnasts Ruby-Lea Johnson, Brooke Srhoj and Callum McCarthy all qualified for the Senior State Championships, as did Atherton’s Chantelle Hall (inset).

Local gymnasts star at Regionals WINNERS ARE GRINNERS: Tablelands teen Kristen Wadley won two state championships in March.

TABLELANDS sailor Kristen Wadley has sailed to success once again on the water, taking out two state championships within a week. The teenager secured an overall win at the Tasmanian State Laser Titles last month, backing it up barely a week later at the Queensland State Championships in Mooloolaba. Wadley’s win at Mooloolaba also included being named the Women’s and Youth Champion. "I went into the final race tied on points, so I had to keep my nerve and sail well to secure a win overall,” she said. “I've been in those pressure situations before, so I knew what to expect." Wadley is now off to Brisbane to train with the Queensland Sailing Team in preparation for her tilt at the Laser 4.7 World Youth Championships in Belgium this July. Meanwhile, about 60 people flocked to Tinaroo Sailing Club’s come-and-try day last Sunday, delighting organisers who were on hand to take pro-

spective sailors out on the water. “We had perfect weather. Everyone got to go out on the water, experience a few different boats and have a great sail,” said club treasurer Annette Wadley. The highlight of the day was an appearance by Olympic sailing gold medallist Tom Burton, who ran a small sailing clinic, mingled with fans and let them hold his medal. “It was a big drawcard having Tom here. Everyone was a bit excited to see the gold medal,” Wadley said. “He gave up a lot of his time answering questions, so it really went well.” Burton also took on Kristen Wadley in a friendly race on the water, the two both enjoying the challenge. The club will host an intensive “learn to sail” course for those serious about wanting to take up the sport on May 13 and 14.

FOUR gymnasts from Mareeba and Atherton are on their way to the Senior State Championships after some stellar performances at a regional competition late last month. Mareeba Gymnastics Club and Atherton Gymnastics Club sent their top gymnasts to Townsville for the Gymnastics Senior Regional Championships on March 26, with all of them qualifying for the State Championships. Mareeba’s Ruby-Lea Johnson finished third overall in the Women’s Artistic Gymnastics (WAG) Level 8 division, while Atherton’s Chantelle Hall also finished third in the WAG Level 7 division. While just missing out on an overall placing, Mareeba’s Brooke Srhoj (WAG Level 7) still qualified for the State Championships through a third place finish in the beam and floor categories at the Regionals. Competing in the Men’s Artistic Gymnastics Level 7 division, Mareeba gymnast Callum McCarthy also qualified after finishing first in floor and third in rings

That’s another competition they’ve got under their belt,” she said. “We’ve been working hard since coming back to fix a few of their routines to get them right up there before the State Championships.” Atherton Gymnastics Club senior coach and manager Dianne Stephens said she was proud of Hall’s achievement at the Regionals, with fellow Level 7 gymnast Casey McCann unable to compete because of a knee injury. “Chantelle improved her overall total from her previous competition at the Barron Valley Invitational by just over a whole mark,” Stephens said. “It was a really good result. I’m really hoping she has a fantastic experience in Brisbane and I think she will.” The Senior State Championships kicks off this Friday.

Bulls thrash Innisfail in Cup clash THE Mareeba Bulls have booked a date with FNQ Heat in the FFA Cup after thrashing Innisfail 8-2 in Cairns last Wednesday night. The Bulls were in rampaging form at Endeavour Park, Steven Cater, Zane Singleton, Jason Haydon and Jaydon Wells all scoring in the first half while Innisfail grabbed one back just before half-time. The onslaught continued in the second half, Paul Ruiz nailing two goals, while David Srhoj and Robert Pendenza both bagged one each. The only consolation came for Innisfail in the 67th minute with their second and last goal of the night. But a humble Mareeba Bulls coach Alex Srhoj said there was still room for improvement in his side. “In patches we were really good, but there were other patches where we need to improve,” he said. “But it was a hot night, the boys worked hard and we’re pretty pleased to get through. “The whole team, including our three subs, absolutely busted their gut.” Srhoj admitted he was surprised at Innisfail’s capitulation on the night, but gave full credit to his men. “We put away our chances and that’s what swung the game in our favour,” he said. Srhoj said he was looking forward to the challenge of playing the Heat later this month. “We’ll try and give them a go. We’ll believe in ourselves and hopefully play well,” he said. “Hopefully everyone’s fit and ready to roll.”

Gators dominate against Kangaroos

Bulls thunder to 8-0 victory

THE Mareeba Gladiators have returned to their winning ways after a thumping 48-20 victory over the Cairns Kangaroos on Sunday. Reeling after their 44-22 loss against Yarrabah the week before, the Gators were caught on the back foot at Vico Oval early with a try by Kangaroo Terrance Newman in the third minute, converted by Ben Cook. Mareeba’s Boche Satrick responded soon after in the sixth minute, Sonny Kerr taking the conversion to make it 6-all by the seventh minute. But Roos weren’t done, Newman running in for another try in the 11th minute and Cook once again converting to go 12-6 up. Then Mareeba found another gear as forward Dan Moevao, co-captain Maddie Oosen, forward Henare Maeva and fullback Joey Burchell all crossed the tryline to give their side a commanding 30-14 lead, helped by Kerr’s conversions. Roos’ Ali Dotoi snatched one back in the 37th minute, but the Gators were riding high by half-time. An arm wrestle in the second half followed

until Burchell broke the deadlock with his second try of the match around the 60th minute, Kerr converting. Forward Kurt Jackson also bagged one in the 71st minute before Kerr himself touched down just on full-time to put the icing on a deserved 48-20 win. Gladiators coach Tye Ingebrigtsen said he was happy with his side’s complete performance. “Our ball control was really good, we played to our structure and came away with a good win,” he said. “Our preparation for the heat was definitely key. The boys got used to it in the game the week before so it definitely made it a bit easier.” Ingebrigtsen praised the contributions of Oosen (man of the match), Jackson, Moevao and lock Clint Posselt. “They laid the platform and the backs did the work out wide,” he said. “Maddie was in everything, he was nice and fast out of dummy half and he just created a lot of havoc for the opposition forwards.”

Ciggy Butts too strong for Bees

THE Mareeba Bulls have turned on the afterburners once again to score another eight goals in a spectacular victory over Edge Hill on Sunday. On a high after their 8-2 win against Innisfail in the FFA Cup last Wednesday, the Bulls continued their goal fest at Borzi Park. Things were already looking good after they went 2-0 up by half-time, before the floodgates opened. Bulls striker Steven Cater played out of his skin in a four goal haul and youngster Ivan Jensen, making his debut for the premiers, scored two himself. Paul Ruiz and Robert Pendenza added to Edge Hill’s pain with the full-time score 8-0. Mareeba coach Alex Srhoj praised the determination, fitness and hunger of his side, who have now scored 16 goals in two games. “The boys really turned it up in the second half. As soon as the sun went down, we came out

of our shell and started playing the football we’re capable of,” he said. “Steven Cater has been working his backside off at training and in games…He’s one of our key players and it’s good to see him finding some confidence in himself. “The first-half was really 50/50. It took us a little while to get over the fatigue of Wednesday night, which was always going to be a concern. “But once we got in our groove, the legs got a bit looser and we started to play with a bit of freedom to open the game up.” In other games the premier ladies lost their first game of the season going down 7-0, while the reserve’s had a hard fought game with plenty of action, but in the end went down 2-1. On Friday night in the second division it was Mareeba verse Mareeba with the experienced Mareeba Orange just overcoming the youthful Mareeba black to win 2-1.

A VALIANT Killer Bees have gone down fighting 45-29 against Ciggy Butts in Round 7 of Mareeba Basketball’s Men’s Summer League. It was a tight tussle in the first quarter last Thursday night as both sides executed a strong defensive effort to keep scores at 7-all by the buzzer. The match really got going in the second quarter, as Butts stalwart Warren Thomson and Bees’ Reef James began furiously trading points in an ever-changing scoreline. Making his rookie debut in the competition after being a late inclusion in the team to make up numbers, James was a clear standout on the night. The youngster, who was supposed to be playing for Blue Angels in their match later that night, sunk a bevy of three pointers throughout the game, his pace and skills making Butts take note. However, Butts’ experience won over in the second quarter, Thomson leading the charge in a masterclass shooting per-

formance to give his side a handy 29-18 lead by half-time. Butts continued their onslaught in the third quarter despite an energetic Bees, only let down by their poor shooting as the scoreline blew out to 41-25. Thomson continued his purple patch into the final quarter, highlighted when he threaded a crafty behind-the-back pass to Darrell Turner who produced a neat layup. But Bees simply refused to quit, the intensity shown by players like Charles Socie emblematic of the team on the night, as they continue to improve week on week. James capped off his stellar debut for Bees with a two-pointer on the buzzer, but it was to no avail as his side went down 45-29. In the week’s other matches, Stingrays beat Barras 52-40, Red Devils pipped Blue Angels 49-45 and Green Hornets forfeited against Spare Parts.
