Mareeba shines at art awards

A SLICE of Mareeba’s rich history has earned national accolades.

Local artists Anne-Maree Keating and Tom Cosic (pictured) won a gold medal the Australian Sign and Graphics Awards this month for their recently finished mural at Mareeba Centre.

From the Aboriginal Dreamtime to the town’s farming heritage, Mr Cosic said locals had been instrumental in sharing their stories to create the masterpiece.

Scam strikes locals

A MAREEBA accountant has warned Tablelands residents not to fall for a pushy tax scam trying to extort thousands of dollars from people.

Grubers Beckett Mareeba principal Bronwyn Price said she had fielded several reports of scammers randomly calling residents claiming they were from the tax office.

The scammer would then tell the resident they owed money and threatened to have them arrested by police if they did not pay $4000 cash into a nominated bank account.

Scammers have also used threat of publicly naming and shaming residents in their local newspaper if they did not pay them the money.

“It’s just really nasty stuff and these people are getting pretty upset,” Ms Price said.

“There’s two problems. One, people can get

caught up in the trap and they pay this money and two, the level of stress it’s putting on people.

“I haven’t come across a scam of this scale where they’re being verbally pressured so much.”

Café Piazza Mareeba owner Maria Aloia said she was almost the victim of the scam a few weeks ago after hearing a threatening message left on her phone to pay the tax office.

Because Mrs Aloia knew she already owed money to the tax office, she wrongly assumed

the message was genuine and promptly called the number left on the message before she was instructed to withdraw $4000 in cash from her bank.

“Then I chickened out. As I was standing there I thought to myself “This isn’t the tax office. The tax office doesn’t call you”,” she recalled.

Cassowary book set to delight A BOOK based on the Far North’s endangered Cassowary is set to delight local children.

Brisbane author Pam Skadins was inspired to write The Cassowary’s Gift after a visit to the Daintree Rainforest in 2012.

“I had the pleasure of observing cassowaries in their natural habitat. I learned more about their contribution, endangered status and ongoing threats,” she said.

“I have worked with young children for much of my life, and so a picture book was the inevitable next step.”

Ms Skadins said the book helped children “understand the importance of the cassowary in the rainforest ecosystem” with a plot that followed other native animals in their search for the rare bird in the rainforest.

Illustrations were done by Brisbane artist Kathryn Lovejoy.

“Complemented by Kathryn’s illustrations, the story endeavours to engage them with wonder, humour, fun and a cassowary song,” Ms Skadins said.

The book is aimed at children aged 3 to 7 years and is available at QBD, Little Steps, Booktopia and Angus & Robertson.

Drive sure to light up Milan A CHARITY drive inspired by the plight of a young Tablelands boy is set to hit the road again this weekend.

The second annual Casali’s Down Syndrome Awareness Drive will bring together keen adventurers on a roughly 100km journey from the Daintree to Wujal Wujal and back along the legendary CREB Track, just north of Daintree Village.

The drive, which will raise money for the Down Syndrome Association of Queensland (DSAQ) and Mareeba Friends of the Hospital Foundation, was started last year by Casali’s Alex Arena, whose grandson Milan, 4, has Down Syndrome.

Milan’s mum, Marie Villella, said she had been overwhelmed by the support for the drive, which had 13 Rough Terrain Vehicles (RTVs) participate last year to raise more than $10,000 for DSAQ. “When I saw how many people participated last year, I was blown away,” she said.

“There is a lot of support for Milan…He’s very friendly and cuddly.”

While shocked upon finding out her son’s condition in the days after he was born, Mrs Villella said she had grown to accept it and has since focused on getting Milan the best care possible.

The youngster has weekly sessions with a speech pathologist, physio, occupational therapist and other specialists because of his condition.

Mr Arena said the drive was about reducing the stigma surrounding people with Down Syndrome whilst raising money for a good cause.

The drive is open to anyone with a RTV or 4WD and will start at 8am this Saturday at the CREB track north of Daintree Village before overnighting at the Lions Den Hotel.

Administrator for health board AN administrator has been called in to oversee the Cairns and Hinterland Hospital and Health Service (CHHHS) after the organisation’s board resigned last Monday.

Terry Mehan, a respected health professional, has been appointed administrator for six months from November.

The move comes after State Health Minister Cameron Dick threatened to sack the CHHHS board over a projected $80 million budget deficit this financial year.

“As administrator, Mr Mehan will effectively function as a replacement board, guiding the HHS’s operations and retaining the same powers and authorities that would ordinarily vest in the board,” Mr Dick said.

“The breadth of Mr Mehan’s experience will assist him in helping the Cairns and Hinterland HHS work towards sustainable growth into the future.”

Mr Mehan is an internationally-recognised health care leader with 40 years experience in health system management spanning three Australian states and overseas.

“It’s wrong not to pay your tax, but they’re not going to come to your door and arrest you on the spot.”

After hanging up, a shaken Mrs Aloia then came in and saw her friend Ms Price who told her to call the tax agent immediately, confirming the earlier call was a scam.

“The scammer had such an authoritative voice in a way that you really pulled yourself up when you heard it,” she said. “They’ve obviously got nothing better to do and it’s a way of making money, if they can get away with it.”

Mrs Aloia said what concerned her more was the fact that the scammer knew almost the exact value of her genuine tax bill, give or take a few dollars.

“How did they know how much we owed?,” she said.

Ms Price said a distressed client of hers had come into her office last Wednesday after also nearly depositing $4000 into the scammer’s bank account.

Despite eventually realising it was a scam and hanging up, the elderly lady was visibly shaken by the scammer’s threats and aggressive nature.

“They threatened to arrest her and her husband and put her in jail immediately,” Ms Price said. “This lady was completely distraught. It took her a long time to calm down and she

thought she was seriously in a whole heap of trouble.”

Ms Price said she had heard of at least one Tablelands resident who had given a scammer $4000 and warned other residents not to fall for the same trick.

“Don’t talk to these people. The tax office does not behave like this,” he said.

“If you receive one of these calls, just hang up and ring your tax agent or the tax office straight away, not the number these scammers are giving you.”

Ms Price said she had since reported several scammer phone numbers to the tax office.

Aero club backs revamp NORTH Queensland Aero Club has thrown its support behind the Mareeba Airport upgrade, as initial works are rolled out around the facility.

Club president Scott Brady said he was excited about the $18 million upgrade, which includes upgrading access roads, improving water infrastructure and strengthening the existing runway and taxiway.

“It’s certainly going to be beneficial to the club moving forward,” he said.

“Aviation is an industry we need to see grow, given the sheer size of the country and the ability to basically connect rural Queensland with major centres like Cairns and Townsville.

“It’s pretty important to have infrastructure in place that allows that to happen, particularly in the wet season with road closures.”

The airport’s water main upgrade, which will give users access to the town’s water supply, was started by FGF Developments in mid-August and is due to be finished at the end of October.

LDI Constructions began widening Vicary Rd at the start of this month with Northern Civil Earthworks to start on the road’s leased area pavements at the end

of October, with a finish date towards the end of this year.

Widening of Ray Rd will begin soon after. “The road upgrades will enable safer access to the airport through Ray Rd and help with the volume of traffic that goes past there,” Mr Brady said.

The club is part of the wider Mareeba Airport Users Group (MAUG), which has been consulting with council over the upgrade.

“It just guarantees the users moving forward that we’re going to have an airport that’s fully functional and will do the things it needs to do for the type of aircraft that are going to be operating from the airport,” Mr Brady said.

A finalised design for the airport’s upgraded runway, taxiway and lighting is due to be finished at the end of November with a start date following next year’s wet season. Mr Brady said there had been no interruptions to the club’s operations since works began in August, but MAUG would work with council on minimising disruptions once work on the runway began.

“So far, it’s been a really positive experience, the council’s been in touch along the way and kept us up to date,” he said.

Roads focus at national conference MAREEBA Shire Council will gain insights into new technologies in building more resilient roads at a major conference in November.

Councillor Kevin Davies and deputy mayor Alan Pedersen (pictured) will attend the Australian Local Government Association’s National Local Roads and Transport Congress in Toowoomba.

“One of the aims of the conference is to look at new technology and new ways of maintaining gravel roads,” Cr Pedersen said.

“These days with triple road trains (trucks), roads just cannot sustain continued use of road trains and if we can work out better ways of doing it, it’s a big advance.”

Cr Pedersen said council faced several unique challenges in maintaining its roads, including harsh weather conditions, a lack of funding and a lack of water to maintain gravel roads in the western part of the shire.

“We’ve got a system of water trucks and rollers, it’s a pattern we’ve used for years and it’s worked very well,” he said.

“But there’s always room to cut costs per kilometre on maintenance and any new ma-

Tick warning for local dogs TABLELANDS dog owners are being warned about the dreaded paralysis tick as the parasite causes havoc in the warmer months.

A recent nationwide survey released

by Murdoch University and chemical giant Bayer found the far northern towns of Atherton and Tully where among several hot spots in the Far North where ticks were prevalent. Tropical Vet Services director Dr Graham Lauridsen said areas of thick scrubland like the Tablelands meant dog owners needed to keep a good eye on their pets.

“Anywhere there’s wallabies, bandicoots, creeks and drains, that’s where you’ll find ticks,” he said.

The study looked at the various diseases paralysis ticks could spread, with Tropical Vet Services helping to collect

Cr Pedersen said there was only a short window to grate gravel roads after the wet season when there was enough surface water available to maintain them before it dried up.

“We’ve got to get in there between bog and bulldust and try and get those roads done.

“That’s what killed us last year because we just couldn’t get water. We had roads torn to shreds out there because a lot of people were de-stocking their properties.”

Council has allocated $1.5 million for road resealing and $600,000 for re-sheeting the shire’s gravel roads in this financial year.

about 300 ticks for research.

Dr Lauridsen said he had treated as many as 50 dogs for paralysis ticks at his Tully-based clinic last month and about 35 so far for September.

“We’re basically seeing two or three a day with 90 per cent to 95 per cent surviving,” he said.

“The good thing for us is most people are aware of it but it’s just about making sure they are using something on their dogs to stop them from getting ticks.

“There’s three options for tick prevention – a collar, a tablet or there’s a spot-on they can put on the back of their neck.”

Dr Lauridsen said owners should be checking over their dogs – or cats – for ticks daily and watch for signs of illness, such as wobbly legs, vomiting and excessive panting.

Real estate firm lends helping hand

Mareeba Community Housing Company’s homelessness supervisor Robert Larkin, manager Patricia Goldfinch and housing manager Heather Dusting are excited about the establishment of the Affordable Housing Limited Real Estate frim.

A NEW era in affordable housing is set to begin on the Tablelands.

Mareeba Community Housing Company (MCHC) will launch their Affordable Housing Limited Real Estate firm at a special dinner event on October 8, helping those less fortunate find a place to stay.

MCHC manager Patricia Goldfinch said the new business arm would provide affordable, one bedroom units for low income residents in Mareeba.

“Our clients simply cannot afford to pay the market rents that have been requested by real estate agents and still maintain a standard of living,” she said.

“We work with tenants who are vulnerable, often homeless and the majority of our clients, probably 70 per cent, are on very low incomes so affordable housing is a huge agenda.”

A registered charity, MCHC is also registered under the National Regulatory System Community Housing scheme and has been operating in Mareeba for the past 25 years. The company offers several housing and support programs, including transition-

al housing, long-term social housing and street-tohome and home stay support services.

“We work very closely with real estate agencies in this town, whether there’s issues with tenancies or assisting them to support tenants to stay in properties where there have been issues,” Ms Goldfinch said.

“In the past six months, we’ve worked to house over 137 clients across Kuranda and the Tablelands.”

State Housing Minister Mick de Brenni will attend the dinner, as well as Stacey Currie, who will share her inspirational story of turning her life around after years of living below the poverty line in a violent relationship.

The three-course dinner will be held at Mareeba RSL from 7pm, with Hansen Ford and Mareeba Toyota donating a signed Cowboys 2016 premiership jersey to be raffled off on the night.

Boaties warned to slow down TABLELANDS boaties are being warned to slow down on Lake Tinaroo after a reduced speed limit came into effect yesterday.

Low water levels have revealed several submerged hazards such as tree stumps at the lake, meaning a new speed limit of six knots is being enforced.

Maritime Safety Queensland will review the speed limit restriction when advised by Sunwater that levels are again suitable for higher speeds.

Tablelands mayor Joe Paronella said

the reduced speed was in line with previous incidents when the lake has reached 8.5m below the full supply level.

“In accordance with the advice of Maritime Safety Queensland, the speed limit has been reduced to ensure improved safety for members of the public,” he said. “Whilst water and jet skiing on Lake Tinaroo is not an option these school holidays, there are still plenty of great reasons to visit the Atherton Tablelands.”

Cr Paronella said council would erect

signage at all boat ramps advising users of the speed limit change.

“What we’d like to reinforce is that there are a lot of tree stumps and old structures coming out of the water, so really, there needs to be due care and attention right around the whole of the lake,” he said.

See the world with program YOUNG Tablelands professionals are being urged to apply for a “once-in-a-lifetime opportunity” to study abroad.

The Rotary Clubs of Mareeba and Atherton are inviting young business and professional people in the area to applying for one of four positions as a Rotary Group Study Exchange Team Member in the United States.

The winner will travel to Rotary District 5960, comprising of eastern Minnesota and western Wisconsin, between April and May next year as part of the Group Study Exchange (GSE) program.

The winning team of four will also have a Rotarian team leader accompany them to represent District 9550, which covers North Queensland, the Northern Territory and Timor Leste.

“The Group Study Exchange program is highly regarded as a means of allowing young business and professional people to not only develop skills and knowledge in their chosen vocations, but also to gain a unique insight into the culture of the country they visit, and the humanitarian work of Rotary clubs internationally,” said Rotary District Governor Ida Portella.

“Not only does the individual team member

benefit, but also their employer and the community in which they live.”

The GSE program pairs non-Rotarian teams from different districts to send and receive professional study groups, staying in Rotarians’ homes when possible.

The program is designed to develop professional and leadership skills among young adults, so that they can address the needs of their communities.

Candidates for team members must be currently employed in any recognised business or profession on a full-time basis and be 25 to 40

years of age in order to have maximum long term impact on their career development.

Candidates must also be citizens of the country in which they reside, in good health, neat in appearance, a good communicator, well-qualified, of sound educational background and open-minded and tolerant.

A GROUP of Tablelands green thumbs have been recognised for their magnificent gardens by council.

Tolga’s Ian and Kate Hays took out the 2016 Tablelands Regional Council Garden Award for Champion Garden and Best Home Garden at a ceremony at council chambers last Thursday.

Other winners were Millaa Millaa’s Shelly Daley (Best Rural Garden), Wondecla’s Jodie Eden (Best Vegetable Garden), Yungaburra’s Artistree Gallery & Global Freestyle for best commercial facility garden, Yungaburra Beautification Committee for best community garden, Atherton’s Dexter Geres for best young gardener and Division 3 councillor Anthony Ball for best new home garden.

Mayor Joe Paronella and Division 1 councillor Kate Eden presented each category winner with a $100 prize, while the runner-ups received a $60 prize.

“I would like to thank Judy Cooper and Cr Kate

Eden for judging all the entries and the 26 nominees for their outstanding efforts in creating and maintaining the amazing array of gardens entered into the competition,” said Cr Paronella.

Cr Eden said the entries in this year’s competition had been outstanding.

“Special mention needs to be given to the Community Development Employment Program in Mt Garnet who had the added challenge of growing vegetables in a warmer, drier climate,” she said.

“The Malanda State High School’s student council are receiving a perpetual shield in recognition of their ongoing commitment to the care of the Japanese garden.

“Andre Dempster is getting a customised award for the best tiniest garden for her exceptional garden packed with design and colour, with no dirt unturned and no space left unfilled at her home in Atherton.”

Garden expo set to bloom in 30th year WITH warm weather and a fine weekend on the cards, everything seems in place for a brilliant 2016 Tablelands Garden and Lifestyle Expo.

Now in its 30th year, the expo has been an outstanding success. This year is set to go off with a bang, with two days of garden and lifestyle fun for all.

Mareeba artist Tom Cosic won a gold medal at the Australian Sign and Graphics Awards for his stunning mural at Mareeba Centre.

Local artists pick up national award TWO Mareeba artists have painted their way into the national spotlight.

NQ Signworks co-owner Tom Cosic and AMK Art’s Anne-Maree Keating picked up a gold medal at the Australian Sign and Graphics Awards this month for their stunning mural at Mareeba Centre.

The mural, which features artwork inspired by Mareeba’s rich farming, pioneering, indigenous and wartime history, began last November and was finished in June.

Mr Cosic said the mural continually evolved as locals stopped to share with him their own stories of living in Mareeba.

“A lot of people made contributions just through bringing up old stories and photos,” he said.

“Each part reflects something for all different people living around Mareeba.”

Ms Keating, a member of the Kokomuluridgi Tribe whose land the centre is located on, contributed to the

indigenous artwork of the mural.

Mr Cosic said he loved nothing more than to create “beautiful images”.

“I try to uplift the look of places and the mood of people,” he said.

“I was really surprised at the feedback…People really took ownership of it, they were really encouraging.

“Parts of the mural helped trigger people’s own memories or feelings.”

Mr Cosic said he was humbled to have beaten competitors from across the country in the awards, where he took out the Traditional Signcraft Skills/Airbrushing or Handbrushing Murals category.

“When they announced it, I was really thrilled I’d won this category,” he said.

“It wasn’t just for me, it was for Mareeba as well.

I remembered all those people who spoke to me and the owners of the centre.”

Delayed sub-division gets push along by council THE developer behind a long-delayed subdivision has effectively been told to get on with it by Mareeba Shire Council.

Council voted four to two in favour of approving yet another extension to Wong Lau Developments Pty Ltd proposed subdivision of two lots into 10 along Fantin Rd, Koah – almost nine years after initial approval was given.

Councillors Nipper Brown, Kevin Davies, Mary Graham and Alan Pedersen voted in favour of the extension while councillors Angela Toppin and Lenore Wyatt opposed it.

Mayor Tom Gilmore was on leave.

The decision means Wong Lau will now have until July 1 next year to proceed with the subdivision, with the developer blaming the Global Financial Crisis and a stagnant property market for the lack of progress.

Cr Wyatt said Wong Lau had already been given more than enough time to subdivide the two lots, which are 74 hectares each.

“I’m really concerned about the fact they haven’t done anything and they’re coming back to us again,” she said.

“They’ve only got a short period time and there’s a wet season coming.

“If they applied again I wouldn’t like their chances for an extension.”

The subdivision will also require significant upgrades to Fantin Rd, which is currently a rural gravel road.

If Wong Lau fails to begin work on the subdivision by July 1, council will likely request they submit a fresh application – but under council’s old 2004 planning scheme through which the subdivision was first proposed.

Cr Toppin said she believed the developer should make a fresh application under council’s latest planning scheme, introduced in July.

Under the new scheme, the minimum lot size for all rural land is 60 hectares, meaning Wong Lau’s proposal, which includes lots as small as 30 hectares, would be incompatible in its current form.

The State’s peak motoring body has put drivers on notice to refresh their knowledge, releasing some of the most commonly misunderstood road rules.

RACQ’s Lauren Ritchie said too many Queensland motorists were failing to get the basics correct.

“Most Queenslanders won’t be surprised to see roundabouts, giving way and mobile phone use while driving are on the list. These are some of the most frequent errors we see on the road,” Ms Ritchie said.

“But most of these rules are straight out of driving 101 and many minor crashes are caused by drivers not following some of these very basic road rules.”

Ms Ritchie said ignorance of road rules was not a valid excuse.

“A licence is not a right, it’s a privilege and it’s everyone’s responsibility to know the road rules and to drive accordingly,” she said.

Five commonly misunderstood road rules are: 1. Roundabouts: Drivers approaching a roundabout must use their indicators when entering and turning left, right or making a U-turn, but not when travelling straight ahead. When exiting you must always indicate left just before you exit, unless it is not practical to do so 2. Giving Way To Pedestrians: If a driver is turning left or right at an intersection, he or she must give way to any

pedestrian crossing the road the driver is entering.

3. Mobile Phones: A mobile phone can only be used while driving in Queensland if it’s being used hands-free, and you are not a learner or P1 licence holder under 25 years old 4. Keeping Left: On multilane roads with a speed limit of

Locals deserve jobs here too Well said, Jack (The Express, 21/9).

Backpackers being employed over local labour is a problem all over this country, yet when you ask employers about it you get the old ‘locals don’t want to work’ – what a load of rubbish.

One thing the farmers and employers forget is most of the farms and accommodation places are still going because of locals working with owners when these businesses started. But now employers have worked out they can treat the backpackers how they want – pay them less than a local and charge them inflated accommodation prices so they get back most of their money that they are paying the backpackers back. Not a bad little tax dodge, as a lot of cash changes hands back to the employers.

But Jack, you see, if they employ locals, the locals don’t need accommodation, so the employers cannot get half their money back.

It is wrong and hurting a lot of little country towns and islands.

The government needs to crack down on these employers in places where there are locals looking for work, but cannot get work because the backpackers are given preference over locals.

Where I am living there are young, local people, good workers that have had their names at employment agencies for two to three years and cannot get any kind of work.

Yet a backpacker can arrive in town and get a job straight away.

It goes back to locals don’t need accommodation so they are no good to employers because the employers cannot get half their money back in cash for accommodation off a local.

grant to fast track the feasibility study into the proposed Nullinga Dam, which the State department has been working on for 20 years.

Councils need to be able to compare the cost per ML of Nullinga Dam Allocation with the water market price of Tinaroo Dam Allocation.

Queensland Ombudsman Phil Clarke reported that the State Deptartment of Natural Resources was incompetent and incapable of administering the Queensland Water Act. It seems nothing has changed, perhaps the Ombudsman was being kind.

There is no sign of the State Government changing the Water Act /Barron ROP, so the Hydro purchases it's requirements inside the yield of the dam and inside the water market, as per the Beattie-Howard COAG Water Reforms. That Tinaroo Dam is at 48% is not swaying the minister.

The most recent snub is by the Cairns Regional Council in it's failure to offer Cairns people the opportunity to participate in local Tinaroo Dam Water Management with the irrigators who are putting together a transition board. The savings if the council joined in would be enormous and also benifit the farmers.

The snub becomes more strange when the council says it intends to use Tinaroo Dam allocation which would make the river environment releases unnecessary. The irrigaters were offered a vote on local water managment but it seems no such vote is forthcoming for the Cairns people.

Local Tinaroo Dam management would mean higher water levels for the many Cairns recreational users and more tourism for businesses.

Tax needs to go now

IT is now 16 months since the Palaszczuk Government called for the Coalition’s backpacker tax to be dumped.

Yet, despite pressure from the tourism and hospitality sec-

tor, farming lobbies, local governments and rebel voices from within the Federal Government, we are still waiting for common sense to prevail.

Malcolm Turnbull, Scott Morrison and Barnaby Joyce seem incapable of taking the decisive action required to scrap a tax that, even though it has not been implemented, is stemming the flow of backpackers to Queensland.

Even now they are talking about tinkering and adjusting the proposed tax rather than dumping it. It could still be many weeks, even months, before there is any clarity.

With every passing day and week that the Coalition fails to act more backpackers decide to boycott Australia in favour of countries such as New Zealand, Canada and the USA. Farmers are finding it increasingly difficult to find the workers they need to harvest their crops while regional Queensland communities are missing out on the cash backpackers spend in hostels and camp sites, in restaurants, cafes and bars.

Last week we wrote to the Deputy Prime Minister to once again stress the economic potential and social benefits backpackers bring and pointed out that backpackers spend most of what they earn in local communities.

The Queensland Government’s submission to the Working Holidaymaker Visa Review references the findings of a Monash University study that 60% of backpackers said they would not have come to Australia if

they were taxed at 32.5 per cent.

Queenslanders should be under no illusions here. This sorry mess is the result of a bad decision, made without any consultation or foresight about potential consequences.

The failure to recognise the damage and admit it was a flawed decision is simply unforgivable.

Dairy products challenged DISUNITY is death, as our political leaders like to say, and the animosity between various factions of the dairy industry reflect this.

Currently, an unsightly squabble over socalled A2 protein is heading to court. Meanwhile, farmers are complaining over the loss of income as milk processors pay them less than production costs.

Dairy Australia talks about a “deep and persistent trough in international dairy markets” and admits that less than half of farmers now feel positive about the industry.

The dairy industry is in decline because consumers are waking up to the totally unnecessary brutality for which we have been paying. Humans don’t need, or increasingly want, to drink cows’ milk, and we’re healthier if we don’t. With so many delicious, dairy-free milks on the market, why not choose healthy and humane plant-based milks instead?

Revegetation project A REVEGETATION project is going gangbusters in Malanda, aiming to boost the town’s tourism potential.

1000 trees have been planted and a large volume of weeds cleared under phase three of the town’s North Johnstone River rehabilitation project.

The $120,000 project, which has been going since the first phase began in 2012, has been mostly funded by the Department of Environment and Heritage Protection’s “Everyone’s Environment Grant”.

The current phase, which started in late October last year, is due for completion in 2018, building a native ecosystem which is incorporated into the urban space of the township for both residents and tourists.

Malanda North owner and director Christine Doan said the project gave the town a “triple bottom line”

in terms of social, environmental and economic benefits.

“Malanda’s backyard has been neglected for a long time but now it’s getting the attention it deserves,” she said. “I love the synergy between economy and the environment that we can achieve on the Tablelands.”

Ms Doan, who is also an executive member of the Malanda Chamber of Commerce, said the creation of nature walks would help draw tourists to the area.

The project involves several local organisations including the Malanda Chamber of Commerce, Tablelands Regional Council, Malanda North, Sustainable Solutions Global, RegenAg, North Queensland Land Management Services (NQLMS), Choorechillum, Tree Kangaroo and Mammal Group, volunteers and businesses.

The project also had assistance from RegenAG expert Kym Kruse during a two-day bio-revegetation workshop held late last year.

Project team lead Dr Kevin Harding said revegetation growth would “provide a timely alternative to full reliance on chemical weedicides in rainforest revegetation plantings”.

Malanda Chamber of Commerce president Geraldine McGuire said the project was extremely beneficial to the local environment as well as the township.

“The work done along the Johnstone River clearly makes a huge difference to the health of riparian forest in this zone, the river itself and to the animals that live in these environments,” she said. “The Chamber also recognises the linkages for economic benefits to the community to come from such projects ”

Rain events at the start of week 15 resulted in some cane supply shortfalls, and mid-week and planned maintenance was scheduled in and around these events to reduced factory downtime. The significant factory issues during the week revolved around restarting the plant following these events, and the failure of the variable speed drive on the cane cross carrier that had to be changed out late in the week.

Incoming dirt levels were also high in these conditions.

The CCS levels dropped this week due to the rain and the cane transport and harvesting groups have been challenged to keep supply up to the mill during the week with the wet conditions.

GROWTH and new export opportunities are on the horizon for the Tablelands’ $552 million agricultural sector.

Mareeba District Fruit and Vegetable Association president Joe Moro has given a ringing endorsement of the sector, highlighted by a recent State Department of Agricultural and Fisheries report into the economic performance of the region last year.

The “Tablelands Agricultural Profile ¬ 2015” reveals the region is home to 42 different agricultural industries, with bananas ($91 million), avocados ($83 million), mangoes ($51 million), sugar cane ($39 million) and beef cattle ($35 million) the biggest contributors.

“Agriculture is no doubt the backbone of the economy on the Tablelands,” Mr Moro said.

“The figures show there is increased production occurring, particularly with some older industries coming back which is good to see.”

The latest figures represent an increase of 30 per cent growth in the sector when compared with estimates from 2010/11.

Mr Moro said expansion of banana, avocado and citrus crops on the Tablelands helped grow the region’s horticultural production.

“Generally, bananas and papaya crops have been moved on the Tablelands for insurance reasons, to get away from the coast where there’s some strong storm activity and cyclones,” he said.

“Citrus is a crop I’ve always said has long-term potential, particularly around the Mutchilba-Dimbulah

area.”

Citrus crops contributed more than $31 million to the Tablelands’ agricultural sector in 2015.

Mr Moro said issues facing the sector heading in to the future included ensuring a continuous source of labour currently under the threat by the backpacker tax, modernising the existing irrigation scheme and developing export markets into Asia.

“There is a lot of activity occurring in the agricultural sector, there is expansion and that’s also highlighted with the fact that irrigators’ water usage at Tinaroo Dam is increasing at four-per-cent per annum,” he said.

“The discussion always reverts back into the building of another dam such as Nullinga and how that could fit into any process where we could see further expansion into the Mutchilba-Dimbulah area.

“But there are some cost issues that would need to be addressed before that would become a catalyst for further expansion.”

Agriculture Minister Leanne Donaldson said she was looking overseas to market the region’s potential.

“While recently on a trade mission to Jakarta, Hong Kong and Beijing I was able to meet directly with industry and government officials and to profile Queensland produce to industry leaders, Asian importers and distributors,” she said.

“The growing Asian middle class means expanding opportunities for export growth as they look to areas like the Tablelands to provide high quality, premium produce.”

club news With Mareeba Lions Club Washed out by rain in June the MSF Sugar Limited Mareeba Lions Family Fun Matrogaine was a roaring success when held on Sunday after the Multicultural Festival.

The course produced some fast times and perfect scores and raised $5,000.00 for the Australian Lions Childhood Cancer Research Foundation.

The event was expanded to include Graffiti Master Class, Skateboarding lessons and exhibition, Basketball, warm up with Curves, and Zumba classes. All in all a very enjoyable day out for all who participated. The event was very well supported by a number of generous sponsors

and supporters. Lions are looking forward to another successful event in 2017.

The Lions Christmas raffle has been launched. Tickets are available from any Lions member, and sellers will be up town from now until the draw on the 24th December.

Last year the raffle contributed almost $12,000.00 to Lions humanitarian projects. Christmas cakes will also be available very soon, no need to wait to Christmas to enjoy a great fruit cake. Ivanhoes take out big one IVANHOES are the 2016 first grade premiers after defeating arch rivals Brothers 19-12 in Saturday night’s Cairns District Rugby League grand final at Barlow Park.

It is the club’s first premiers trophy since claiming back-to-back titles in 1990 and 1991, breaking a 25 year drought for the Smithfield-based club.

After setting up an early 10 point lead, the Knights allowed Brothers back into the contest to lock scores at 12-all by halftime.

The second half remained in the balance and looked to be heading for extra time before Ivanhoes came up with the match-winning try four minutes from fulltime.

Shoring up the result, the Knights added a field goal in the final seconds to claim a seven point victory.

Get set for river bash

RAFTING teams are raring to go for next month’s annual Bash of the Barron River.

The annual race, held in conjunction with the Kuranda Festival, will see several teams compete on a swashbuckling course down the Barron River.

A range of competitors are set to try their luck, from first-timers to seasoned river pros.

White water rafting business Raging Thunder took out the trophy last year.

Hilarious Honour stormed home on Saturday to win the $17,000 Atherton Cup. In local trainer Janel Ryan’s second win of the day, the thoroughbred with jockey Peter Cullen aboard, won by a mile to claim the cup in fine style.

The Mareeba stalwart won Champion Trainer at the Mareeba Annuals this month, the second year in a row she’s taken out the top honour.

The grandmother-of-three, who has more than 35 years experience in the industry, said she was chuffed with the win after a strong showing by

her four thoroughbreds at the races.

“Three of my horses are getting on in age but they seem to be all revitalised,” Ball said.

“They’re all going really well and they’re all feeling good.”
