Fresh start

By Justin Fris

TABLELANDS Regional Council Mayorelect Joe Paronella is extremely humbled by his victory in the March 19, local government election. Together with his supportive wife Wendy, Mr Paronella is excited about helping to build a fresh start for the region. “I’m very humbled by the result,” he said. “I’m aware of the perception that many rate-

payers were keen for a total ‘clean sweep’ of all the old councillors in the new council – and that message has come through loud and clear. “This is a golden opportunity for us to work and move positively towards a bright future for the TRC region.” Mr Paronella moved to Atherton in 1977, after growing up in Innisfail. Initially, he only planned to stay in the region for a short time.

However fate intervened and he met Wendy – and three children and eight grandchildren later, he still calls the Southern Tablelands home. Having always had a strong interest in the community, Mr Paronella took this passion further and was successfully elected as a member of the old Atherton Shire Council in 2000. CONTINUED PAGE 3

High school students learn about driving safely By Justin Fris

SENIOR students at Mareeba State High School participated in a series of workshops at last Wednesday’s Rotary Youth Driver Awareness (RYDA) program at Davies Park. Facilitated by Mareeba Rotary and in close collaboration with Qld Health, Police and the Department of Transport, students were given a frank assessment on how poor choices on the road can prove fatal. Not just to you and your loved ones, but someone else. Acting Snr Cst Aleda Day facilitated an interactive indoor session, where she outlined how distractions and poor choices can be the difference between life and death. “You might be a really good driver,” she said. “You might go through life and never have a crash. But you don’t know what the person beside you is like. “Not only do you have to drive for yourself, but you have to drive for others on the road as well. Because you

can’t guarantee what the other person is going to do.” The second station was focused on the varying distances that vehicles travel when being forced to brake suddenly. RYDA organiser Charlie Martens said the workshops were extremely beneficial for the students – with many on the brink of getting their licences. “It’s the 6th time we’ve held the RYDA day here in Mareeba,” he said.

“Our target audience is Year 11 students, where they are at an age before they start driving. “The kids get exposed to stopping distances and how a car brakes at different speeds. We also have a series of video sessions with a crash survivor and those who have been impacted by a serious accident. “The children also learn about the responsibilities of owning a car and learning the road rules.” The RYDA day is held annually in Mareeba.

local councils plan to work together FROM PAGE 1 He would hold the position of councillor for eight years under the guidance of revered local Mayor, Jim Chapman. “I was very proud to have served under Jim,” Mr Paronella said. “He was a great mentor to me and we had a really good close working relationship.” Mr Paronella added that he sat on a few different committees as chairperson (roads, traffic advisory and pest management) during his time as councillor, which provided him with a great deal of experience. “These experiences definitely provided a great opportunity for knowledge and you were given a great opportunity to know about what was going on in your area,” he said. “I also got to know a lot of different people.” Amalgamation came and went in 2008

and Mr Paronella began a new working life with Trans North Bus and Coach. During his time as operations manager, he saw the business expand and took great pride in assisting passengers having a pleasant travelling experience across the Far North. “I’ve been lucky to work with fantastic staff and drivers throughout my time at Trans North,” Mr Paronella said. In the days after the election, Mr Paronella and Mareeba Shire Council Mayor Tom Gilmore contacted each other in a bid to meet and discuss the region’s future. “In coming weeks, I want to sit down and discuss the Tablelands region as a whole with Tom,” he said. “I hope that both councils can be united in trying to progress our region.” Mayor Gilmore agreed with Mr Paronella’s notion and said he believed it could open the door for a fresh start for both councils and

the region as a whole. “It’s time for a new beginning,” he said. “I think this is a great opportunity for both councils to start afresh and work alongside each other. “It is a great opportunity for the region to reap economic and tourism benefits.” Prior to being sworn in as Mayor, Mr Paronella said he was optimistic about the ‘newlook’ TRC working cohesively. “One of the main things is, we have a fantastic group of qualified councillors elected,” he said. “I feel privileged to serve the community. “I’m sure we will work for the betterment of the region. “I want to make sure that our small communities will not be forgotten and I encourage our council to work closely with our staff on getting the best results possible.”

IT was a great week last week for more than 30 notfor-profit groups across Mareeba and Dimbulah as the Mareeba and Dimbulah Community Bank branches of Bendigo Bank hosted the annual ‘2016 Sponsorship’ presentation nights. More than $30,000 was distributed amongst various groups to support events and activities in the coming year. In addition, $250,000 has been provided for Stage 1 of the ‘Bendigo Bank Recreational Precinct’. Company chairman Mr Gilbert Teitzel said: “Strong community support at the Mareeba and Dimbulah Bendigo Bank branches is the foundation which enables us to provide support to so many groups and clubs in our area. “The dedication and hard work of so many of these NFP organisations underpins the essence of our rural towns; and we congratulate them all for the work that they do. “It is very rewarding to be able to give much needed support to so many and we look forward to continuing this support well into the future,” Mr Teitzel added. The Community Bank branches have returned more than $2m in the last decade.

work on sugar cane farms in Ingham. “I grew up on the family farm that he established more than a century ago and I know the challenges faced by primary producers throughout North Queensland. “I’m passionate about North Queensland and the Turnbull Government’s plans to develop Northern Australia to improve the lives and livelihoods of everyone who lives in the Kennedy electorate,” Mr Pavetto added. “Unless we have a strong voice inside the Coalition Government, I’m very concerned that areas outside the major cities will continue to miss out. This has been happening for far too long.

“From now until the election, I’ll be travelling throughout this vast region speaking with, and listening to, as many people as I can about the issues that are important to them.” LNP president Gary Spence congratulated Jonathan on his successful pre-selection. “Jonathan has demonstrated his passion and commitment to North Queensland through his long connection to the sugar industry,” Mr Spence said. “He has also been a passionate advocate within the LNP for realising Northern Australia’s full potential. “Jonathan will provide a strong and effective voice for the people of the electorate.”

Great experience for primary school leaders

Rain failed to dampen the enthusiasm of the students as they completed activities during the camp.

SCHOOL leaders and students from Chillagoe, Dimbulah and Mutchilba State School’s recently returned from a memorable trip at Camp Paterson. Located at Emerald Creek, the students took a lot out of the three day camp and have returned to the classroom revitalised. Dimbulah State School Year 5/6 teacher Kerry Balzarollo said that 26 children attended the camp and organisers were thrilled with their positive attitudes. “The camp organisers said it was the wettest camp they’ve ever had – but the children were the greatest school group they’d ever had,” she said. “It was designed to really take the students out of their comfort zone and see how they could handle themselves in different situations.” Mrs Balzarollo said the camp played a pivotal role for children in the region as they were provided with a great opportunity to get to know each other prior to high

school. “The students got to do several activities including archery, canoeing, building rafts and an obstacle course,” she said. “With the obstacle course, the students had a manikin named ‘Betty’, who was placed on a stretcher. “They were required to work as a team and help get her to safety through the obstacle course, negotiating through several challenging elements.” Mrs Balzarollo added that she believed that the students had matured after the camp and had grown tremendously from the experience. “It’s the 10 year old’s equivalent of travelling overseas,” she said. “They have matured so much as a group – even just after the three days. “The camp promoted teamwork, problem solving and active leadership – they are definitely more connected in the classroom.”

Tropical Tableland Tourism (TTT) launched their new ‘Discover Magazine’ at the Coffee Works in Mareeba, last Thursday. The ‘Discover the Atherton Tablelands and Beyond’ publication is a joint effort between TTT and its members across the Tablelands. The Magazine originally began in 1987 as the Tableland Visitors Guide; and has since grown to what it is today. Since it digital inception two years ago, the magazine is now digitally downloaded by people around Australia more than 100,000 times annually, giving the Tablelands an extraordi-

nary reach within the northern tourism market. Mareeba Shire Mayor Tom Gilmore and Mayor-elect Joe Paronella from Tableland Regional Council were both on hand to officially release the new glossy publication to the region. Both councils contribute considerable funds toward the success of the publication and organisers hope the trend continues. Bram Collins (pictured), TTT Member and Managing Director of Undara said: “The magazine is without a doubt one of the most important tourist publications for the region. “It has a print run of over 100,000 copies

and a digital download of about 100,000 as well. “The multiplier effect of the tourist dollar affects everybody in the local economy. “There are a lot of people or business people who will swear black and blue that they are not in tourism, but if they were to look at their annual figures (and if they are quiet in the summer and busier in the winter) then they’re in tourism whether they like it or not. “Almost every business on the Tablelands benefits from Tourism.” The new magazine is available from numerous businesses and tourism operators across the north.

Improving the mental health and wellbeing of rural and remote Queenslanders Distance, drought and a culture of self-reliance are among issues identified during development of a plan that will target better mental health and wellbeing for people living in rural and remote Queensland. Other challenges including lack of coordination within and between service providers, and the attraction and retention of a skilled clinical workforce, have also been identified in a Discussion Paper released today by the Queensland Mental Health Commission. The Commission is leading the development of a Rural and Remote Mental Health Wellbeing and Action Plan, expected to be released later this year. The Discussion Paper outlines themes arising from consultation with rural and remote community members and recommends areas for priority attention. Queensland Mental Health Commissioner Dr Lesley van Schoubroeck said development of the Action Plan was an important step in maintaining healthy and strong rural and remote communities. "While recent rains in some parts of Queensland have brought welcome relief, it is clear that it will take some time yet for the drought to lift," Dr van Schoubroeck said.

According to the 2014 Regional Wellbeing Survey, people living in rural and remote communities in Queensland report lower levels of individual and community wellbeing than most other states. During a recent visit to Western Queensland, Dr van Schoubroeck observed that distance, difficulty retaining experienced staff, and constraints on available resources were adding to the challenge of supporting mental health and wellbeing. A culture of self-reliance, stoicism and personal resilience - while useful in many circumstances - could be preventing some people from seeking help during difficult times. "There may be apprehension around asking for help, and a fear of the stigma sometimes associated with mental health issues that is preventing some people in rural and remote Queensland from getting help and supporting their mental wellbeing," Dr van Schoubroeck said. The Discussion Paper identifies a number of alternative ways to provide services to people living in rural and remote communities including "Mental Health First Aid" training for community members to give on-the-spot support, ahead of follow-up specialised care and treatment.

Wind of change for TRC THE Tablelands Regional Council will usher in a new era under Mayor-elect Joe Paronella, with a completely new council. With the turbulent conflict of the past two years removed from office, there is no reason why this council can’t steer the ship back on course for the future. The Express contacted all successful candidates

prior to being sworn in, for their thoughts ahead of a new chapter of working life. As we were going to print, the outcome of Division 4 (between Michael Lawrence and Samantha Banks) was still yet to be determined, therefore we offered the opportunity for both of them to comment.

Kate Eden – Division 1 “I was fortunate enough to be elected unopposed, which was a kind gift to me. I’ve been working hard campaigning in my division since the announcement – but it’s really great to know the formation of the council now. “We have an excellent group of qualified candidates. I think many of us have ranging backgrounds, but we have all got a regional focus. Annette Haydon – Division 2

Michael Lawrence – Division 4 “The experience of running for council, attending public forums and Election Day itself were all positive experiences. “The interaction with all other candidates within the division was excellent. We even all made sure that each other’s ‘How to Vote’ cards were all distributed equally. “Regardless of the result, I will catch up with Bernie (Wilce) and Samantha (Banks) for dinner this week and we will catch up and reflect on the experience together.” Katrina Spies – Division 5

“I’m very relieved that the election is over and that the hard work has paid off. It was a very good feeling. “I will be going away for the Easter break for a good four day break before returning ready to be sworn in.”

“I’m very humbled by the outcome. Everybody worked very hard and I’m looking forward to sinking my teeth into it (workload) from next week.”

Anthony Ball – Division 3

Bronwyn Voyce – Division 6 “It was a great experience to go through, as with so many candidates, you never know how it will end up. “It was a really clean campaign across the board. It was a very busy job, but lots of fun.”

“I really enjoyed the campaign. I received good support throughout my division and I’m looking forward to working in the community.”

Samantha Banks – Division 4

“I found the campaign really good. I really appreciated the fact that there was no mudslinging. “Frankly, the last few days have been trying as there is still no clear winner in our division.”

ELECTED councillor candidates across both the Mareeba Shire and Tablelands Regional Council will be ‘sworn in’ to office in the coming weeks. The MSC will hold their ceremony on Wednesday, April 6, at 9am. The TRC will be holding their ceremony a week earlier, on Thursday, March 31, at 9.30am.

MSF and Mackay Sugar have recently entered into an agreement to toll crush up to 400,000 tonnes of Mackay Sugar contracted cane per season at the Tableland Mill in the 2016, 2017 and 2018 seasons. The agreement, which is subject to satisfaction of a number of conditions, extends the arrangements made for the 2015 season between the parties and continues to provide for the Tablelands cane to be transported to MSF Sugar’s Tableland Mill for crushing as opposed to Mackay Sugar’s Mossman Mill. Mackay Sugar CEO Jason Lowry said the tolling agreement was mutually beneficial and will enable MSF Sugar to utilise its

current spare capacity at the Tableland Mill while providing a shorter crushing season length for Mackay Sugar’s Mossman and Tablelands growers. “Mackay Sugar will continue to be responsible for the marketing of sugar and molasses toll crushed by MSF Sugar and will be responsible for cane payments to growers under the collective Cane Supply Agreement. “Mackay Sugar will engage with relevant stakeholders to finalise the planning and logistics to give effect to the agreement,” Mr Lowry said. MSF Sugar CEO Mike Barry said the arrangement was good news all round – for MSF Sugar,

for Tableland and Mossman region growers and for the continued viability of Tableland Mill and its employees. “Tableland Mill will continue to operate under a seven-day operation for the term of the new agreement. “We look forward to continuing to work with the Tableland region growers and to mill their cane reliably and efficiently into the future,” Mr Barry said. Both the Mackay Sugar’s Mossman Mill and the Tableland Mill is expected to handle a crop of approximately 820,000 tonnes in the 2016 season with both mills expected to commence the crushing season in late May.

Dust settles on MSC election

MAREEBA Shire Council (MSC) will welcome three new faces next month, following the results of the local government election. Current MSC councillors Nipper Brown, Mary Graham and Alan Pedersen were easily re-elected, with Angela Toppin, Lenore Wyatt and Kevin Davies joining them for life in a new council. From very early on in the count, there was very little doubt about five of the six positions. Cr Brown led the count from the outset, with Cr Graham, Cr Pedersen, Kevin Davies and Angela Toppin also polling very well. Ms Wyatt faced an anxious wait, as at times she only held a slender lead over fellow challenger, Grace Armenti.

Mayor Tom Gilmore “There are always disappointments in election campaigns. Cr Holmes and Cr Ewin put in the hard yards during an extremely difficult period and were part of the inaugural council. “It is said to have them not returned. However, elections do give us an opportunity to change and to refresh. “And now we have three new councillors who will bring together their life skills, with a level of enthusiasm. And I look forward to working with those councillors, along with the three incumbent councillors. “This coming four years is about delivery, consolidation and a new vision. I look forward to it with enthusiasm.”

Nipper Brown

Kevin Davies

Lenore Wyatt

“It’s really humbling. For me, it backs up the fact that we are on the right track and I’ve been doing what I believe is the right thing. “I’ve still got to work away from the council. However, I’m still getting queries, so I have to get back to them. “I will probably head out to Chillagoe over Easter just to say ‘G’Day’ and just go back to what I was doing before.”

“I’m happy with how the polls went. It’s pleasing that people were happy in putting their trust in me and now I have to keep that level of trust with them.”

“I’m ecstatic about the result. Mayor Gilmore called me this morning for a brief chat. My networks within the community have really worked hard and supported me. “I did the hard yards and I brought the community along for the ride. I’ve received some positive feedback since the announcement and look forward to helping people in our community.”

Alan Pedersen

Mary Graham

Angela Toppin

“I think the campaign went fairly well. I thought the behaviour of all the candidates throughout the campaign was really good from pre polling right through to Election Day. “Even on the Saturday, we all shared food and drinks together and that’s what an election should be like. “Sadly from a team perspective we lost two of our candidates, but that’s democracy and we all had an equal opportunity out in public to put our case to the people.”

“The election campaign went very well and I’m overwhelmed by the support I’ve received. I’ll continue to work to the best of my ability. “I will continue to work for the benefit and betterment of the Shire. We need to maintain our focus on previous projects (for example, wastewater treatment plant, Mareeba airport) and keep the Shire in a sound financial position.”

“I’m very excited to be serving this community and working alongside the Mayor and fellow councillors in delivering positive outcomes for the Mareeba community.”

Tablelands treasure – Shaaron Linwood By Justin Fris

LAST week saw a career of one of the hardest working councillors in Far North local government history come to an end. Over the past 16 years, Shaaron Linwood has worked herself into the ground voicing ratepayer concerns and supporting local organisations across the Tablelands Regional Council region. Linwood herself is rather modest regarding her achievements, as she was raised on a diet of hard work and kindness to others. Her formative years were spent on a cattle property near St Lawrence, where she was expected to do her fair share for the family. “My father was ‘Bushy’ Black and he was a stockman for ‘Waverley Station’ – which was one of the premier Brahman studs,” she said. “It was an interesting place to be, because neither Dad nor Mum drove a car.

Thank you The Mareeba Shire First Team would like to thank all our booth workers and supporters for their great effort over the week of the recent Local Government Elections. We will continue to deliver strong representation and keep our Council on track. Mary Graham, Nipper Brown, Allan Holmes, Karen Ewin, Kevin Davies & Alan Pedersen.

“It was probably about 6km in a straight line to actually get into St Lawrence from where we were, but you had to walk over this great train bridge. “If we ever had to get into town, or had to go away, that is how we would do it. Once a year, we’d go away for a dental check up; that was the big deal. “We’d also get the supplies delivered twice a year – we’d get the huge big order in of supplies. Old George Hyde would come out in his old rattle trap and deliver our groceries.” It seems inconceivable for many of us living in 2016 that any family would receive six months worth of groceries in one hit. But for the Black family, that is how it was and it was something that all of them would look forward to. “We used to love it, because George would always come with a white packet, tied up with lollies in it for all of us kids,” she said. “When you grow up on places like that, you just get used to hard work. Mum taught us all, all five of us. “She only attained up to Year 4 education herself, so she taught us by correspondence; and said she learnt as she went along.” But with the affordability of boarding school out of reach, Shaaron was required to leave home at the age of 13 and enter the workforce. “All of us left home at the age of 13 to work,” she said. “I put myself through junior and secondary education after I got married, by correspondence. “I got sent out to another cattle property to work as a housemaid. You’d be up at 4am in the morning to help get the breakfast for all of the ringers. “From 1pm-2pm, we’d get a rest and then would be working through until 8pm at night – cleaning, preparing the meals, helping with the gardening and looking after the kids.

MAREEBA SHIRE FIRST

“That was seven days a week.” Linwood believes that this is where her passion for books developed, as she had precious little time for anything else. As years came and went, Shaaron would marry her husband Wayne and would relocate to Hughenden. After living on a diet of effectively “sausages and mince” for a year, they would purchase the local newsagency. “When we were first married, we moved up to Herberton and I started my first business – a dress shop,” she said. “Then we were transferred out to Hughenden and I worked in the local newsagency for six months. “Then, we decided to buy it. So we lived on sausages and mince for 12 months, while we pulled together the money to buy it. She added: “We worked from about 5am in the morning until 9pm at night, six days a week. On Sunday, We’d work until 1pm, pack up and head out to the golf course. “Because otherwise people would keep knocking on the door. “I was involved in church out there, the show society – just about everything that there was out there. “When we got back to Herberton, it was more of the same, as I always enjoyed getting out there and helping the community.” Shaaron’s passion for the community saw her eventually elected to the old Herberton Shire, which eventually amalgamated into the Tablelands Regional Council. Over that time, she has worked alongside many people. She may have disagreed with some over certain issues, but she has always put her constituents first – regardless of which division they live in. One of Shaaron’s closest friends in local government is current Mareeba Shire Council Mayor, Tom Gilmore. When asked for comment on her career, Mayor Gilmore paused thoughtfully and spoke straight from the heart. “Shaaron has probably worked enough hours for three lifetimes,” he said. “I had the absolute

privilege of working with Cr Linwood for four years. “I can honestly say that Cr Linwood is the hardest working person that I have ever worked with in local government. “She always knew her subjects. She came prepared to every meeting. She was fierce in her support for her division constituents and the issues that mattered to them. “She was a strong willed councillor and I hold her in the highest esteem.” Despite the constant friction over the past two years in Council, Cr Linwood has received support from many in the community. She has formed close friendships with fellow outgoing TRC councillors Rod Marti and Marjorie Pagani and these friendships will continue in her retirement. “I fully intend to keep that connection with Rod,” she said. “Both Rod and wife Junko are a wonderful family. “Both Rod and Marjorie are close friends. Marjorie and I initially didn’t get on all that well due to very different opinions on wind farms (laughs), but I respect her. “Marjorie really wore this whole thing (council infighting) and it really affected her health. I’m happy that I’ve been there to support her.” Faith is very important to her. She has a solid network of friends in both Herberton and Ravenshoe, who have always lent an ear when she has required it. As Shaaron prepares to enjoy a well earned break from working life, she urged incoming councillors to work cohesively across the whole region. “I think they need vision – but I think they also need to realise that they are there for everybody,” she said. “Not just their patch of ground. The viability of Atherton rests solely on the smaller communities, so it has to work hand in hand.” A special afternoon tea will be held for Shaaron this Sunday afternoon, from 2pm at the Herberton Shire Hall. Everyone is welcome to attend the event.

The Dimbulah Lions Club is an integral part of their local community. So much so that to show their appreciation the club recently held a special event to thank the Gold, Silver and Bronze sponsors of their annual festival – The Dimbulah Lions Festival, held annually in May. Gold sponsors included the Bendigo Community Bank – Mareeba and Dimbulah Branches, TGT Home Timber and Hardware and Total Food Network. Silver sponsor, Lindsay Transport and Bronze sponsors Sunwater, Dimbulah Foodworks, Incitec Pivot and Casali’s. Over the years the club has passed on thousands of dollars to local sporting clubs, organisations and people in need so the entire community benefits from their hard work throughout the year. President Eddie Toffanello and his committee members would like to sincerely thank the sponsors of the Lions

Festival for their generosity. “Without their support each year the Lions Club would not be in a position to have the festival and to give back to the community,” he said. All the contributors to the festival (large or small), are all to be commended for their ongoing support in making the festival the success that it is. In 2015 the Dimbulah Lions Club was awarded the ‘Community Group of the Year’ award at the Mareeba Chamber of Commerce Business Awards – a testament to their efforts in the community. The club has already begun to prepare for this year’s festival – if you would like more information contact Eddie Toffanello on 0417 193 213 or John Anziliero on 0488 935 340.

Following his titanic struggle against General Zod, Metropolis has been razed to the ground and Superman is the most controversial figure in the world. While for many he is still an emblem of hope, a growing number of people consider him a threat to humanity, seeking justice for the chaos he has brought to Earth. As far as Bruce Wayne is concerned, Superman is clearly a danger to society. Method

The potential for surprising news on the job or career front could trigger thoughts about what the future holds. This week’s blend of energies could have you on the edge of your seat. July 23 to Aug 22

The Rocky Factor: ½ cup of walnuts, ground ½ cup of chopped macadamia nuts 1 cup of dried sour cherries

1. Make the base chocolate. Blend the first five ingredients of The Base together till smooth and creamy, then add the cacao powder and give a final blitz. 2. Now, add the Rocky. Pour the base into a large mixing bowl, and stir in all the Rocky ingredients. 3. Finally, make it pretty. Pour the mixture into an 8 inch pan, lined with baking paper. 4. Sprinkle dried rose petals and happy wishes over the top to decorate, and let set in the freezer for an hour before serving.

If you need to commit to a plan or project, try to keep track of important documents and paperwork, as you may need them further down the line. Changes at this time could be inevitable. Later, there will be fun, too!

EXPRESS sPORT MUFC excited ahead of season opener THE Mareeba United Football Club is optimistic heading into their opening round FNQ Premier League fixture against Leichhardt. Despite only having played one official pre season fixture (a 2-0 FFA Cup loss to Leichhardt), MUFC Premier Men’s coach Alex Srhoj is confident that his side will be competitive on Saturday night. “It’s pretty exciting at the moment,” he said. “We just want the season to start. Our sessions have been not too bad and I’d say nine spots in the starting 11 have been finalised. “We had a 90 minute intraclub match at training last week and we squeezed in another one after the Easter weekend. “The reserve team will be very much a new look side and our ladies have been progressing along nicely. We have a solid core of 15 girls who are really enthusiastic and keen to play.” Leichhardt had their final pre season hitout on March 19, where they were defeated 2-0 by Edge Hill United in their regional qualifying FFA Cup tie. They have been busy over the campaign, playing additional friendly matches against the FNQ Heat (NPL) and MA Olympic (NQ Premier League – Townsville). “Our boys have had a really good break,” Srhoj said. “And you can tell, because they are fresh and really excited to go. “If you look back, some of our senior players (Victor Madrid, Wayne Srhoj, Ben Fresta) have not missed a training session or match in nearly three years. “We’ve been bringing one or two new youth players into our each session and our senior players have been setting a great example for them.” Ukrainian goalkeeper Dima Sinelnik will debut in goal for MUFC, with the Mareeba football community looking forward to his impact at the club.

Roosters aim for opening win Graeme Tywford in action against Ivanhoes.

THE Atherton Roosters will commence their 2016 Cairns District Rugby League campaign against Yarrabah this Sunday at Jilara Oval. Dean Howard’s men finished the pre season with an impressive 22-6 win over Ivanhoes in Smithfield, which capped off an impressive month of results. The likes of Toa Christian, Jacob Rivett and Chris Campbell have starred for the Roosters, with plenty of young local talent coming through the lower grades to back them up. Yarrabah are regarded by many as the most enigmatic team in the CDRL. At their finest, they are scintillating to watch and virtually unbeatable. However, their fortunes often fluctuate from minute to minute, week to week. They are a confidence-based side, who play on emotion and flair. Howard said: “I hope the boys can keep on doing what they are doing. Our scramble defence has been really good of late. “A win to finish off the pre season is always handy as gives the boys confidence. They’ve really been wanting to train a lot more and continue to work hard.” In other matches, Innisfail take on Ivanhoes in a grand final rematch, Mareeba hosts Edmonton, Suburbs entertain Mossman/Port Douglas and Kangaroos will open against Brothers Cairns.

Top 10 girls MSHS Cross Country: Back Row (L-R): Reilly Cifuentes, Tracy Martens, Kristy Liave, Angel Hoare, Olivia Anderson, Rachael Feltrin, Cyrena Myrteza. Front Row (L-R): Cayla Wiseman, Orla Weaver, Kristen Beatts.

MSHS celebrate cross country on final day By Justin Fris

STUDENTS at Mareeba State High School (MSHS) were given a real thrill last Thursday morning, when they were given an opportunity to participate in the school cross country. MSHS deputy principal Terry McClelland spoke passionately about the concept and was delighted that the student cohort were able to celebrate on the final day of the term. “Not all schools have cross countries in high school anymore,” he said. “Basically, a lot of schools say ‘no, it’s off campus’ – or they don’t designate a full school day.” From the U/12 races right through to the open divisions, the 3.78km course was feverishly hit hard by MSHS’s finest athletes.

Drew Cater was victorious in the Open Boys division, finishing in a time of 14min 26 seconds. It is the second year in a row that he has finished below 14min 30 seconds. Ricaydan Wason and Brett Girgenti finished 2nd and 3rd respectively, with less than a minute separating the top three. The Open Girls division was won by Rachael Feltrin, who finished in a time of 19 min and 58 seconds. Further back in the field were Cyrena Myrteza (20min 10 seconds) and Kristen Beatts (20min 32 seconds) who both gave a good account of themselves. Once each individual age group had been recognised, the top 10 runners (from each gender across the school) were formally recognised for their efforts.

Cross country excitement

Open Champions: Year 12 students Drew Cater and Rachael Feltrin.

MAREEBA State Primary School held their cross country last Wednesday morning, with hundreds of students eagerly participating for their respective houses. One of those participants was Cruz Bailey, (pictured right) who was assisted to the finish line by his teacher Katie Martin and aide Jody Grant. Results will be announced on April 11, at the school assembly.

Mareeba Swimming Club welcomes special visitors

Nick Smith, Jade Edmistone, Drew McGregor and June Cotter with some of Mareeba’s most talented swimmers.

THE Mareeba Swimming Club received a visit from swimming royalty recently, with visits from Nick Smith (Qld Swimming – Sport Scientist), Drew McGregor (Qld Swimming – Coach and Club Development Officer) and former 50m world breaststroke holder, Jade Edmistone. With a focus on stroke development, diving techniques and key fundamentals, the trio spent time with 10 top swimmers from across the Tablelands. Mr McGregor – who has visited the Mareeba Swimming Club on several occasions – is committed to helping swimming coaches across the Far North maximise the potential of their swimmers. The Mareeba Swimming Club was very grateful of their club members, who prepared a hearty BBQ for everyone after the session had concluded.

MAREEBA GLADIATORS 2016 SEASON

‘Brotherhood’ turns to ‘family’ under guidance from Stowers By Justin Fris

CAMERADERIE amongst senior members of the Mareeba Gladiators has never been better – and a lot has to do with their relationship with newly appointed A-Grade coach, Josh Stowers (pictured). A former Gladiator who tasted first grade premiership success back in 1999, Stowers is an astute tactician who relates well to his players. Ahead of their Round 1 opener against the Edmonton Storm at Davies Park on Saturday, the Gladiators are confident they can perform well in the coming season. They played two trial matches during the pre season (defeated by Mossman 24-16 and Atherton 34-16), however Stowers has put both of these results into perspective. “I thought I’d use these two trials to test out our young players,” he said. “I haven’t really seen a lot of the guys play, so I’ve really used them to see what I’ve got. “I’m happy with the last two weeks. The trials have been basically ‘Man, this is good; we’ve got some really good boys’ – now it’s just combining them together and getting them to do what we want them to do.” Handling errors cost the Gladiators during their first hitout against Mossman/Port Douglas, however they improved considerably during the derby against the Roosters. “There’s still a lot of improvement and the boys have been

MAREEBA

working really hard on it,” he said. “One thing I’ve really realised is that the fitness is good. “The boys have been getting really fit, so it’s something we will probably keep sticking to. A fit team is 80 per cent of the battle. “We still also have a bit to work on with our defence – but then again, you don’t win grand finals in trials (laughs).” Several Gladiators have caught the eye of supporters in the first two trial matches, with Petale Tai and Clint Posselt notable standouts. Also pleasing for Coach Stowers, is the emergence of several local products. The likes of Rhylan Reys and Aziah Gutchen are putting in the hard yards and are standing up to be counted. Reys in particular had a fantastic season in 2015 and the Gladiators faithful is confident he can continue his good form. The Gladiators have been blessed with an enterprising early draw, where they will only travel away from the Tablelands twice in the opening seven rounds (trips to Tully and Kangaroos). Stowers said he was hopeful that his men could capitalise on the early part of the season and build a solid framework for the season. “It’s something (good start) we should definitely set a goal of,” he said. “Win three or four of those five – that would be really great, but if we put in the work, I think it is going to be good.” He added: “As a coach, I don’t really focus that much on the other team. If we do our job – if each person goes out there and does their job – we have a great chance to win a game.

MAREEBA GLADIATORS 2016 SEASON

“But if you start worrying about the other team, you’re not focussing on the right things.” In terms of non-negotiables for each match, Stowers and his coaching staff focus on two key criteria – set completion rates and errors. “That first five minutes against Atherton, we made five errors in the first five minutes,” he said. “Two of them were drop balls and three were penalties. “I’m very big on completion rates and errors. If you can keep a hold of the ball, you will more often than not win the game.” Stowers added: “Most penalties that are given away are often down to laziness or not doing the ‘one percenters’. “We just really need to be good with our one percenters. If we can do that, we should be good.” Positive home form is also a priority for the Gladiators, who are keen to build on positive inroads from last season. Toward the later part of the 2015 season, the Gladiators were able to knock over the likes of Ivanhoes (2015 grand finalist) and Southern Suburbs, which proved they could match it with top four sides. “Even when I was here in 1999, our team was always full of local boys,” Stowers said. “I’m really keen to stick with local talent in Mareeba to win a competition. “If we can start off the way that they finished last year, it would be awesome. You should be winning home games.” Stowers added: “We got together over the last weekend and sat down – setting some team goals. If you don’t know your goals for the first month, how does your team know where they are going? “We’ll sit down together, set the goals and reassess them at the end of each month.” Numbers have been really good at training, with upwards of 60 plus on the track across senior grades. Stowers has adopted a delicate balance for his men – knowing when to be firm, but also can share a laugh. “Last week at training, we had around 60 or 70 boys on the field,” he said. “To see the boys rocking up on the field – obviously the rain is holding a few boys back (laughs) – but the boys are loving the sessions. “We’re trying to split it up with a bit of skills and a bit of conditioning. The mood at the moment is very happy. “And the pleasing thing is that they are enjoying themselves. If you’re not enjoying your football and training, it’s very hard to get a result.” The Gladiators will kick off their 2016 Cairns District Rugby League Campaign this Saturday evening against the Edmonton Storm at Davies Park. Kick off is 6pm.

President's Message The Mareeba Gladiators have been training since November 2015 under the direction of new club coach Josh Stowers. Josh is a former Gladiator who played in the 1999 premiership winning side and brings a wealth of coaching experience and energy to our club. The Gladiators A-Grade squad is the youngest group to represent the club for quite a few years and their fitness, enthusiasm and respect for the jersey will hold them in good stead for the long season ahead. There are a few new faces in the team and Josh has the boys raring to go. The club is very excited about our prospects this year. Tote Strickland will coach the A-Reserve team and they were in good form during pre-season hit outs against Mossman and Atherton. The side is going into this year's competition with a lot of confidence. The squad contains a number of players who are pressing for spots in the A-Grade side and it's great to see this type of depth and competition within our club. Tote has been working very closely with Josh and it will be no surprise when these players break through. The current ‘Clubman of the Year’, Mark Tognola, is our Under 18's coach for season 2016. Their numbers have been growing slowly over the past few weeks, thanks to Mark's efforts; and signs are good that the Mareeba 18's will be a force in the CDRL this year.

The mighty Malanda Eels are primed for another great season in the Second Division competition. The Gladiators are very pleased and honoured that Malanda has chosen, once again, to be part of our club and we can't wait to see the players and their faithful supporters again at Davies Park. The unsung heroes of the teams are the managers and trainers. They are integral to the side whether training, travelling or playing. This year we have Les, Ray, Doc, Chippie, Abby and Isabella attempting to keep the coaches and players on the straight and narrow – good luck with that. Keeping all the bodies together this season are our tireless first aid officers Des Pascoe and John Arcidiacono. The club is extremely fortunate to have two such highly qualified and passionate people looking after the players. There is a very positive feeling around the club at the moment and we are all eagerly awaiting the start of the season proper. The players have certainly put the hard yards in with the best pre-season effort I have seen since my involvement with the senior Gladiators. Best of luck to all grades for the 2016 season. Up the Gators! Yours in Rugby League Andrew Foster President, Mareeba Rugby League Club
