Knuth out firing By Michael Serenc

DALRYMPLE MP Shane Knuth has accused the State Government of pandering to green groups over the proposed new vegetation management laws. Mr Knuth was unapologetic in his assessment of the government’s attitude towards the laws, which have caused widespread backlash on the

Tablelands due to their restrictions on agricultural land clearing. “This government has always had a “get the farmer” attitude,” he said. “Obviously they’re looking to appease Brisbane voters and green groups who think the government is doing a wonderful thing all in the name of trying to make criminals out of producers who are producing a product that puts good

food on our table.” The Vegetation Management (Reinstatement) and Other Legislation Amendment Bill 2016 is currently being reviewed by a parliamentary committee and is due to report back to Parliament with its assessment on June 30. If passed, the laws would be retrospective, taking effect from the date the Bill was introduced into parliament on March 17.

Mr Knuth said the fact the Bill would be retrospective was ridiculous in that farmers could be jailed for clearing land they were legally allowed to under the current laws which are still in effect. “I hope the review committee is not pressured into supporting a Bill that is flawed and un-Australian,” he said. THE tiny town of Croydon will get a taste of the race that stops a nation™ when it plays host to the Melbourne Cup trophy. Some 34 towns and cities across Australia and New Zealand have been earmarked to receive a visit by the iconic 18-carat gold trophy, before returning to Melbourne in November for the big one. But Croydon will be the cup’s northernmost visit. The town was chosen to host the tour because of the commitment made by Croydon Shire Council to provide a comprehensive schedule of activities for the entire community to enjoy while the $175,000 cup is in town. “The Emirates Melbourne Cup and the long tradition of human-equine interaction it represents provides a highly relevant rallying point for all of our people,” said Croydon mayor Trevor Pickering. “Croydon Shire is a small yet resilient community and hosting the 2016 Emirates Melbourne Cup Tour provides a unique opportunity to benefit the future of our town through generating a wider exposure throughout the region and engaging with the wider community.” Victorian Racing Club CEO Simon Love said the cup tour helped generate enthusiasm for the race. “We have delighted in bringing communities together in the shared history and magic of the Emirates Melbourne Cup and Michelle Payne’s victory last year certainly adds another dimension to those narratives,” he said. The Melbourne Cup will visit Croydon on September 14 before heading south to Kyabram in Victoria. Community members are encouraged to upload photos with the Cup to Instagram, using the hashtags #PeoplesCup and #EmiratesMelbourneCup, for the chance to win a trip for two to Flemington for the running of this year’s Melbourne Cup.

“Your local bloke on the Tablelands” Servicing Mareeba, Atherton and everywhere else!

By Michael Serenc VETERAN cop Rolf Straatemeier has seen first-hand the horrors of a road fatality. He’s had to perform the dreaded “death knock”, confronted with grieving family members as he tells them their loved ones are dead. And now with six deaths in three months on Tablelands roads, enough is enough. “It’s just tragic, really. Most of them just shouldn’t happen,” Inspector Straatemeier said. “We do know that in some of those crashes, alcohol and drugs can often be attributed.” There have been eight fatalities on Tablelands roads so far this year, compared to six during the same period in 2015. The most recent was a two car crash at Emerald Creek on June 5 where a 68-year-old man was killed. The spate of fatalities comes as police re-launched Operation Fatal Reaction on June 6 and 7, conducting 264 roadside breath tests and seven roadside drug tests over the two-day period. Two drivers tested positive for drugs, while another 12 people were issued with speed infringement notices and five were nabbed for other offences. Insp Straatemeier, who is part of the Tablelands Patrol Group, said while he was confident the majority of drivers did the right thing, it was the reckless minority which was cause for concern. But he was at a loss to explain why those particular drivers chose to drink and drive, take drugs while driving or engaged in speeding

along the road. “We’re having our officers out on patrol as much as we can,” he said. “We catch a lot of people drink and drug driving, so we’re out there enforcing but there’s still people who are prepared to do it.” Insp Straatemeier said while police were engaging schools in generating awareness about the dangers of drink and drug driving, motorists themselves needed to know the risks. “When it boils down to it, drivers need to take responsibility for their driving,” he said. “They’re the ones who have at their hands what could be a lethal weapon. It’s as simple as that.” Innocent motorists have also been unwitting victims in fatal crashes, caught in the wrong place at the wrong time. “It’s very devastating. We’ve had people innocently driving along the highway and were just taken out,” Insp Straatemeier said. “Our last two fatalities were innocent people that died in head-on collisions from another vehicle being on the wrong side of the road.” Insp Straatemeier said he knew of police officers who had left their job after attending fatal crashes, but emphasised there were better support networks in place nowadays to help officers through such a situation. “If someone makes a wrong decision on their part by electing to drive when they shouldn’t, or not driving to the road conditions, that can have a disastrous impact on other people and maybe even themselves,” he said.

Shane Knuth blames greenies for vege laws FROM PAGE 1 Mr Knuth said even if the Bill was supported by Labor, Katter’s Australian Party, independent MPs and the LNP could still vote it down. “I will continue to lobby the crossbenchers and the LNP to oppose this Bill by whatever means necessary,” he said. The push against the proposed vegetation laws has received a timely boost, with the Queensland Law Society (QLS) labelling them unjust and backward. “Queensland Law Society has a long-standing commitment to evidence-based policy, and there is simply no evidence to support the radical changes to prosecution,” said QLS president Bill Potts. “The government’s justification for these changes is, quite frankly, feeble and is based on administrative convenience.”

Top award for Cape York group for job creation in the region THE Cape York Land Council (CYLC) has been recognised for its work in job creation with a major indigenous award. CYLC’s Peninsula Development Road (PDR) Priority Agreement with the Department of Transport and Main Roads recently took out the Partnership Award at the Queensland Reconciliation Awards ceremony in Townsville.

The PDR agreement resulted in 25 per cent of construction work won by indigenous businesses, and more than 80 indigenous people have worked on the $260 million road upgrade. It followed a lodging of a single Native Title claim over Cape York in 2014 on behalf of traditional owners, making it cost-effective for all parties involved.

“Native Title is a property right, like any other mainstream property right,” said CYLC chairman Richie Ah Mat. “Interests that claim Native Title is a barrier against development and land use and kills jobs need to get past that thinking. Our PDR agreement is proof that’s nonsense.” Mr Ah Mat said the agreement opened up a bright future for Cape

York Indigenous entrepreneurs and job-seekers. “The agreement has ensured the protection of traditional owners’ rights, and provided jobs, training and other opportunities,” he said. “Importantly, cultural and heritage clearances on the road are conducted by traditional owners for the relevant areas where the work is being undertaken.”

TAFE course give young men fresh start 10 YOUNG Mareeba men are work-ready after recently completing a three month intensive course at Cairns TAFE. A partnership between Cairns TAFE and jobactive provider QITE, the successful graduates

obtained a Certificate II in Resources and Infrastructure Work Preparation, with two already gaining full time employment after graduating on June 3. For three months, three days a week the group travelled by bus to the Cairns TAFE campus where they attended classes and developed new skills through hands on training. The aim of the "Back to Study" program was to teach the group new skills which would then translate in to long term Lingerie & Fashion employment opportunities, as well as help to build their confidence and engagement. The course was facilitated by experienced teacher Paul Buckley (a Queensland Training award winner) and trainer Steve Willian. Both were extremely impressed with the attendance and enthusiasm all the boys showed over the program duration. “Most of the boys were actually not keen to commence the course, but when they started to operate the machinery out of a classroom environment they just excelled,” said Mr Willian. “It was great to see them gain conSALE ENDS JUNE 21ST fidence and realise they are capable of learning new skills and putting them to use in real life situations,” The men were sad to see the course end Post Office Arcade, Mareeba and had high praises for their trainers.

Joza Opacak (QITE), Dyle Cook, Steve Willian (Trainer), Nathan Tabuai, Samuel Ross, Talita Dent (MEGT), Clint Courtney, Richard Bong and Leim Dodd.

Through both theory and practical lessons, the group developed skills in the operation of bobcats and excavators, forklifts, cherry pickers, scaffolding and working with heights. Graduate Leim Dodd said he enjoyed his time on campus and learnt several new skills. “We have learnt so much from Paul and Steve – they are great teachers and I am more confident after completing the course,” Mr Dodd said. “It’s great that I am now able to use machinery and the other new skills I developed will help in finding employment,” he said. QITE general manager Jillian Trout partnered

up with TAFE Queensland North executive general manager Jo Pyne after seeing a shortage of training options in the building and construction industry. “There was a calling for it with very little training available in this area, especially in the construction industry,” said QITE employment consultant Joza Opacak. “With the upgrade of roads in the Cape, we are hoping this will assist in them in gaining employment.” The course was run through TAFE and was accessed by these students through jobactive, a government funded program.

Pool proposal no sure thing By Michael Serenc TABLELANDS Regional Council mayor Joe Paronella is yet to be convinced a pool at Ravenshoe is needed, despite pleas from a local lobby group. Ravenshoe Rural Activities Incorporating Sustainable Energy (RAISE) president Doreen Mortimore gave a passionate presentation to councillors at last week’s meeting, asking for financial assistance to fund a $27,775 feasibility study into the pool. But Cr Paronella told The Express council would need to carefully consider the viability and long-term benefits of having a pool in Ravenshoe, with the project expected to cost about $3.6 million. “In the lead up the last election, I said I would be in favour of a sustainability study being done on it,” he said. “We have people for and against it in the local community. The ones in favour certainly have a passion for it and there has been a push for a long time.” Cr Paronella said he had to look at every aspect of the proposed 25m, eight lane pool, including its whole-of-life cost. “I’m taking a very cautious approach because number one, we don’t have all the facts and figures in front of us yet,” he said. “It’s one of those things we need to give a great deal of consideration too – the benefits borne on the whole of the community versus the costs borne on the whole of the community.” Given council’s tight finances, the majority of funding would hinge on a sports and recreation grant from the State Government which can only be obtained through local councils. Mrs Mortimore said 361 people attended a rally in Ravenshoe late last month to support an indoor, heated pool for the town. The local mum was been campaigning on the issue for the past 15 years and was heart-

ened when RAISE received a recent $35,000 State Government grant to get pool drawings done. “This is social, economic and community infrastructure, I just can’t understand why it is so hard to get funding,” she said. “Fitness, health and wellbeing is the next trillion-dollar industry, so we’ve got to get onboard.

“We’ve got children that can’t go to a swimming facility unless they do a 104km return trip through two mountain ranges. They’re missing out.” Mrs Mortimore said the construction of a pool would revitalise economic activity in Ravenshoe, which had been hit hard by the loss of the timber industry, and the downturn in dairy and mining.

Safety first for motorcycle riders as laws are shaken up QUEENSLAND’S motorcycle laws are set for a shake up, with several new changes set for licensing laws. The reforms, to be rolled out in October, include: increasing the required number of courses to obtain an R licence from two to three, holding a minimum learner licence period of three months, the extension of the minimum RE (restricted) licence period to two years, removing the restriction prohibiting R licence holders from carrying a passenger for the first year and a stronger emphasis on riding behaviour and higher order skills in Q-Ride courses, and greater standardisation in the course curriculum. Main Roads and Road Safety Minister Mark Bailey said changes to the competency-based testing and licensing requirements would boost safety for one of the most vulnerable groups on our roads “Motorcycle riders and passengers continue to be over-represented in the road toll,” he said. “The figures are unacceptable and highlight the need for us to review and reform the motorcycle licensing system in Queensland.” Mr Bailey said the changes were founded on community and industry feedback and included implementing a minimum learner licence period. An advisory group is currently developing the new standardised Q-Ride course curriculum. The group consists of industry stakeholders and road safety representatives including Q-Ride providers, the Motorcycle Riders Association Queensland, the Centre for Accident Research and Road Safety – Queensland (CARRS-Q), RACQ and QPS.

WE REMEMBER: More than 150 people attended a special commemoration in Ravenshoe for victims and survivors of last year’s cafe blast.

Ravenshoe remembers A TOUCHING tribute to the victims and survivors of Ravenshoe’s tragic cafe blast has resonated with locals at a special commemoration event. Councillors, emergency services members and well-wishers gathered at the town’s Festival Hall last Thursday to remember Margaret Clark and Nicole Dempsey, who lost their lives in the blast, and the 19 others injured on June 9 last year. Tablelands Regional Council Division 2 councillor Annette Haydon praised the way in which the event was conducted. “I think it was very uplifting...They did it very well,” she said. “The people have been very supportive of

each other. It’s brought the town together.” More than 150 people attended the event, including some of those directly affected and their families. Colourful artwork from local school students adorned the hall, while a Welcome to Country dance was performed by the area’s local Jirrabul People. “It is wonderful to see this show of support, respect and acknowledgement of those directly affected and everyone concerned as well as the resilience of the entire Ravenshoe community,” said Tablelands Regional Council mayor Joe Paronella. “It has been a truly humbling night with many people from the wider community at-

tending. It was also incredibly moving when Ravenshoe State School music students played I am Australian.” A whopping $839,254.52 was raised by the Ravenshoe Cafe Explosion Appeal Fund to help survivors and victims’ families through the recovery process. A small amount of that money has gone towards a pull-up banner in memory of Ms Clark, a local of Innot Hot Springs. It will be displayed in the town’s hall. “It just goes to show the heartfelt compassion of Australians coming out to help when our community was in need of support,” Cr Paronella said.

Mareeba mayor Tom Gilmore will hand down council’s 2016/17 budget today.

Basic budget set for year ahead By Michael Serenc A NO-FRILLS budget is set to be handed down by Mareeba Shire Council today, with a focus on service delivery and maintaining ageing infrastructure. Mayor Tom Gilmore remained tight lipped about what exactly would be contained in the document, but was adamant there were no bigticket projects or drastic cuts forecast for 2016/17. “Generally speaking, it’s a steady-as-she-goes sort of budget,” he said. “As a small council, we’re always going to have to depend on government grants to assist with major capital works...That’s the only

way we can survive.” Cr Gilmore said maintaining and upgrading ageing infrastructure in the shire was a continual challenge for council, citing the large network of underground pipes as one example. “We have to know what’s under there, the age and capacity of it to continue to provide sufficient water and sewerage to, for instance, developing areas,” he said. “That’s part and parcel of what we continue to do as part of the budgetary process.” Council CEO Peter Franks ruled out any forced staff redundancies for this coming financial year, saying the “hard calls” had already been made

in council’s first two years of operation since deamalgamation. “Most of the cuts were internal, servicing the organisation itself rather than the community,” he said. “We could deliver double the services we do now, and the community would appreciate them, but the community can’t afford them. “Our funds are really limited, so we’ve constantly got to look for ways to better use that money.” Mr Franks said council’s solid financial performance was backed up in the Queensland Auditor-General’s report for the 2014/15 financial year, which noted Mareeba was one of only two de-amalgamated councils that achieved an operating surplus.

Hann Highway funding pledge Mareeba Shire mayor Tom Gilmore, Tablelands Regional Council mayor Joe Paronella, Flinders Shire mayor Jane McNamara, LNP candidate for Kennedy Jonathan Pavetto and Northern Australia Minister Matt Canavan at least week’s Hann Highway announcement.

By Michael Serenc THE Coalition has succumbed to pressure on funding for the Hann Highway, announcing a $42.6 million package to upgrade the inland road, if elected. 36km of the remaining 100km of the highway will be sealed between Hughenden and The Lynd, while more than 3km of existing single lane, sealed road between Mt Garnet and The Lynd is to be widened and strengthened to two lanes. Announcing the funding in Mareeba last week alongside three local mayors, Northern Australia minister Matt Canavan said the State Govern-

ment would be contributing an extra $8.52 million on top of the Federal funding. “This been widely supported by local communities...They’ve been pushing this for a long time,” he said. “All towns along this route will benefit once this is upgraded and this is the first step.” Senator Canavan said the remaining 64km of unsealed highway would be progressively upgraded over time, with the $42.6 million coming out of the government’s $600 million Northern Australia Roads Programme. He remained hopeful local councils could do the upgrade works, if successful through a Queensland Department of

Transport and Main Roads tender. “We’ll certainly be pushing hard for local councils to get a fair crack at it because I do think, as shown with the disaster relief money, that local councils are the most efficient way of doing things,” Senator Canavan said. “If we get more bang for our buck then we do it quicker.” Tablelands mayor Joe Paronella said the benefits of upgrading the Hann Highway “were incredible” for primary producers, while Mareeba mayor Tom Gilmore looked to the future. “This is nation-building infrastructure, this is what we’re all about,” Cr Gilmore said.

“This road will eventually connect the Cape York Peninsula with Melbourne in the shortest possible way in the shortest possible time.” LNP candidate for Kennedy Jonathan Pavetto praised the announcement as a boost for North Queensland. “Some people have been talking about upgrading the Hann Highway as long as I’ve been alive, but the important part is we’re getting on with it and we’re doing it,” he said. “What we’re doing with the Hann complements the work we’re doing with irrigation. We want to develop a lot more dams here on the Tablelands.”

Eco-tourism resort planned for Kuranda is finalised A 626 ha eco-tourism resort and innovation hub in Myola has moved a step closer to final approval with its master plan being finalised. “KUR-World” is now waiting on State Government approval for the project, said to be worth $650 million. Reever and Ocean Developments chairman Ken Lee said the destination would be focused on four key themes: luxury eco-tourism, education and business, rejuvenation, health and wellbeing and adventure and recreation. “We are confident KUR-World’s unique mix of accommodation and complementary facilities, unconstrained by space limitations, will take the best characteristics of the site and transform them into a place of relaxation and rejuvenation,” he said. The master plan will be split between two distinct zones featuring a northern section known as “Serenity” and a southern section known as “Spirit’. Most of the project’s development will be contained in “Serenity”, land which has been used for farming and agriculture since the 1800s. By contrast, Spirit, features steep hills, towering rainforest and pristine natural habitat which has remained largely untouched and is set to have low-impact adventure and nature-based activities. “KUR-World will add to the region’s range of tourism offerings with a world class equestrian centre and a health and wellbeing medical retreat with bioresearch facility and Chinese medicinal herb garden planned for “Serenity”,” Mr Lee said. A decision on KUR-World by the Queensland Coordinator-General is expected at the end of this month.

JUNE is Bowel Cancer Awareness Month. A recent report shows that more than eight million Australians – about one in three people – will be in the "crosshairs" of bowel cancer, a disease which can cause abdominal pain, rectal bleeding, diarrhoea and other unpleasant symptoms, in just 10 years. The World Health Organization says that bacon and other processed meats are a major cause of bowel cancer, and that red meat, including beef, pork, and lamb, is probably carcinogenic as well. Other health organizations, including the Cancer Council and Bowel Cancer Australia, warn people about the link between meat consumption and cancer and encourage everyone to eat more fruits, vegetables, and other plant-based foods. If you are concerned about cancer and other health problems visit PETA.org.au for a free vegan starter kit. Laura Weyman-Jones, PETA Australia

False accusations on Pavetto

Pavetto, is that he is a "fly-in fly-out candidate". Katter supporters especially have some gall carrying on this gutter political attack when he falsely accused Jonathan of having worked for Bob Katter on national television. Jonathan grew up and went to school in Ingham (which is part of Kennedy since federation in 1901 the last time I checked) and went to ANU to further his studies. Many young men and women from this electorate need to leave to further their studies and broaden their horizons. To attack these young people who want to seek out opportunities is nothing short of disgraceful – we deserve better from our Federal MP. Jonathan then worked for canegrowers representing all Queensland Cane farmers. On nominating for Kennedy, Jonathan resigned from his job as a lobbyist at great personal expense, to return home to help give Kennedy a sensible voice in Canberra. That's a lot more commitment than we have seen from Katter in some time. Bryan Connor, Cloncurry

Overwhelmingly positive response to FMD campaign Last month, I announced a major campaign to raise awareness of the enormous harm an outbreak of foot-and-mouth disease could cause to Queensland’s livestock industry and our state’s economy. The response to the campaign has been overwhelming. Online videos on disease identification and prevention have already been viewed more than 80,000 times. There is no doubt that the disease is the most serious biosecurity risk we face in terms of the potential to damage livelihoods and our international reputation. Experts estimate that a major outbreak in Australia would cost more than $52 billion over 10 years. No-one should underestimate the threat or question the need for constant vigilance. An outbreak would result in the mass destruction of cattle and other cloven animals, and an export ban on meat products and live animals. I am urging all those who work in the livestock industry and food supply chain to take the free online awareness course. The course takes about 40 minutes to complete and is a key element in strengthening our defences against this devastating disease. It’s a simple process. Just go to www. biosecurity.qld.gov.au/fmd and follow the link. Biosecurity is a priority for the Palaszczuk Government and, given the response from all industry sectors to the current biosecurity capability review, it is clearly of vital importance to producers too. Clearly there is widespread recognition that we must all play our part in keeping Queensland free of FMD. Leanne Donaldson, Minister for Agriculture and Fisheries

theregion Agriculture expo this month Growers interested in precision agriculture technologies can attend a special expo in Mareeba later this month. The Society of Precision Agriculture Australia (SPAA) expo will feature presentations from some of Australia’s best farmers, researchers and consultants at Mareeba Leagues Club on June 28. “We are excited to secure some drawcards to the event, including irrigation technology specialist Alison McCarthy from the National Centre for Engineering in Agriculture in Toowoomba,” said expo organiser Dimity Hunter. Tools, technologies and techniques available for horticulture and vegetable production systems will be the focus of the event, which is one of the first in Queensland for SPAA. Local grains farmer Daniel Adams is set to share his story with precision agriculture, from where he began and the steps that led him to implement the technologies on their own farm along with an innovative banana farmer from the Lakeland region. The workshop is free to attend, but RSVPs are a must. The

event begins at 9am at the Mareeba Leagues Club, and concludes with lunch. For more information, contact Dimity Hunter on 0427543384 or email dimity@spaa.com.au

Cr Paronella said a “more modest rate increase” was planned for ratepayers, despite an earlier forecast of a seven to 10 per cent increase.

Councillors happy with feedback

Traditional owners welcome state support

TABLELANDS councillors are “overwhelmed” with the positive feedback and support shown so far from the community at events and meetings. “It is important for us to listen to ideas and concerns and we are grateful for the insights and passion shown for our local community by the people who have come forward and made their opinion known,” said Tablelands Regional Council mayor Joe Paronella. “Within May we held a range of events to support small business operators with 176 participants attending, hosted a café style forum in Mt Garnet with 50 residents taking the opportunity to voice their concerns, ask questions and get answers, and also attended an array of local business and community group meetings to outline our priorities and seek feedback.”

CAN’T MAKE IT ON ELECTION DAY?

CAPE York traditional owners have welcomed the State Government’s continual commitment to the return of ancestral homelands. Balkanu Cape York Development Corporation CEO Gerhardt Pearson, said the commitment made on Mabo Day by Treasurer and Minister for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Partnerships, Curtis Pitt, ended Reconciliation Week on a high note. “Mr Pitt’s pledge to continue returning homelands through the Cape York Peninsula Tenure Resolution Program will ensure the work we have done over the last two decades reuniting Traditional Owners with their country will continue,” he said. “We appreciate Mr Pitt’s declaration. He understands the importance of striking the right balance between competing land uses, which we have advocated since 1989.” Mr Pearson said the State’s Tenure Resolution Program was a good reflection of Mabo laws, with the program supporting traditional owners’ native title rights. “The return of land helps create jobs for indigenous people, and stimulates economies in depressed and challenging communities,” he said.

Newborn groups help local mums A TRIO of mothers’ groups is giving support to those raising young children. Three “Mums and Bubs” groups are now operating in Mareeba, Atherton and Malanda, giving families access to a child health nurse. “We provide support for parents by building confidence and parenting skills with relationship-based parenting program such as the Circle of Security Parenting,” said Cairns and Hinterland Hospital and Health Service’s Child Health Nurse and Lactation Consultant Sandra Wallace. “Having the interaction and support between mothers not only helps build their knowledge and skills, but also gives them the confidence in their maternal instincts of parenting.” Local mum Jill Cockrem said she had benefitted immensely from the group. “Attending these sessions and receiving expert advice and meeting mums alike took away the struggle, along with many doubts and unknowns I had with my first child, and helped to put my mind at ease in such a challenging stage of life,’ she said. “Having that guidance from Sandra with my second baby has been immeasurably beneficial.” The Mums and Bubs group also offers parents information on their babies growth and development, feeding management for breast and bottle, introduction to solids, immunisation, and positive parenting. For more information about the group, or to make a booking, contact Mareeba Maternity on 4092 9367 or Atherton Child Health on 4091 0263.

Herberton Men's Shed will receive $6300 from the Turnbull Government to continue to promote and support men’s health and wellbeing in the Kennedy electorate. The grant will supply and install electrical equipment and electrical connection for lighting and power points at the Men’s Shed facility. Under the National Shed Development Programme, the Turnbull Coalition has provided the Australian Men’s Shed Association with allocated funding of $800,000 this financial year with a funding pool of $400,000 per round. This programme allows Men’s Sheds and organisations supporting a Men’s Shed to apply for funds to better respond to local needs. Applications can support items such as – tools and equipment, purpose built workspaces, improvements to existing facilities, costs incurred to undertake activities that raise awareness of preventable health problems, promote or support the health and wellbeing of members and costs associated with provision of training, seminars or major projects. In promoting the recent grant announcements, LNP candidate for Kennedy Jonathan Pavetto said the Men’s Shed Programme is providing benefits for the community at large. “The community is benefiting from the projects undertaken in the sheds and family ties are becoming stronger with happier and healthier men,” he said. “Men’s Sheds reduce social isolation, particularly for older men and men living in rural and remote areas, enabling positive social interactions, enhancing health and wellbeing in the men who attend,” Minister for Health Sussan Ley said.

SAT 2ND JULY

THE NICE GUYS

In 1970s Los Angeles, down-on-his-luck private eye Holland March (Ryan Gosling) and world-weary enforcer Jackson Healy (Russell Crowe) have nothing in common until they're plunged into a life-or-death mystery when the missing persons case they're both following makes them the target of paid killers. Now grudgingly working together along with March's precocious teenage daughter Holly (Angourie Rice), they must navigate the smog-filled days and neon-soaked nights of 1970s Los Angeles to follow a labyrinthine trail of clues to finally find Amelia (Margaret Qualley), the missing girl. But this is only the tip of the iceberg; they uncover a shocking conspiracy that reaches up to the highest circles of power. Review by Louise Keller: The ingredients are mouth wateringly good: Russell Crowe and Ryan Gosling as a mismatched odd couple in a retro 70s comedy action thriller written and director by Shane Black, the man who created the original Lethal Weapon in 1987. The tone is offbeat, the juxtaposition of ideas occasionally inspires and goofy moments entertain; There is fun to be had in this rambunctious comedic film that keeps us guessing as blows are exchanged, bullets fly and two flawed individuals somehow find their mark together. As for the two leads, they play exceedingly well against each other.

The year is 1977 and the place is Los Angeles, where both Healy (Crowe) and March (Gosling) are guns for hire. Healy’s niche is punching guys who prey on young women, while March accepts pretty much any commission his PI badge brings in. According to March’s 13 year old innocent, ever-helpful daughter Holly (Angourie Rice), her dad is the worst PI in the world, which perhaps accounts for the fact that she keeps her eye on him. Rice is a lovely surprise, popping her head unexpectedly into all the action and getting caught up in the proceedings as a result. From the outset we know that both Healy and March are struggling to hang onto the lowest rungs of their respective ladders. Crowe and Gosling have crafted their characters beautifully, delivering something we have not seen before from either of them. Crowe’s Healy may be all brawn and little style, but he has a twinkle in his eye; March’s inadequacies bring out the best in him. Gosling meanwhile, is goofy and earnest all at once as March accidentally tumbles from balconies, swims with party mermaids and stumbles over his own feet. The story involves a porno star called Misty Mountain, air pollution activists and the making of an experimental film, whose star Amelia (Margaret Qualley) is the girl for whom everyone is searching. Amelia is a wonderful, almost mystical creation, wearing a canary yellow gown that is low

cut at the front, rises high elsewhere and flutters in the breeze like an illusion. The body count rises as clues are followed and questions mount. Watch out for Kim Basinger who has a small but important role as head of the Justice Department with a keen interest in the case. The fun / sleazy side of Los Angeles is on display: there are wild parties with unicorns, red Indians and near naked girls whose rumps double as somewhere to place your drink. It’s the oddball nature of all the elements that are the film’s greatest rewards.

ALICE THROUGH LOOKING GLASS

THE

When Alice (Mia Wasikowska) wakes up in Wonderland she must travel through a mysterious new world to retrieve a magical scepter that can stop the evil Lord of Time (Sacha Baron Cohen) before he turns forward the clock and turns Wonderland into a barren, lifeless old world. With the help of some new friends, Alice must also uncover an evil plot to put the Queen of Hearts (Helena Bonham Carter) back on the throne.

To construct the salad 3 Tablespoons walnut oil 1 Tablespoon red wine vinegar Salt & pepper 1 kg Roasted beetroot 150g rocket leaves 150g goats cheese 1 cup roasted walnuts, chopped

To roast the beetroot Pre-heat the oven to 180C. Place the beetroot, garlic cloves and thyme into a baking dish. Add a splash of red wine vinegar to the tray and drizzle olive oil over the beetroot. Arrange the rocket on a serving platter, then spoon the beetroot into the centre of the rocket leaves. Crumble the goats cheese over the top of the beetroot. Scatter the walnuts over the goats cheese.

Roosters draw ahead of derby

POWERFUL PAIR: Mareeba hockey players Kate Wilcox and Maddy Turner are best friends and represented the Peninsula squad.

Local pair’s 'whacky' friendship WHEN a young Maddy Turner met Kate Wilcox 10 years ago, little did she know the two would form a formidable bond – both on and off the sports field. “When my family moved to Mareeba, I made friends with Kate and she just introduced me to hockey,” Maddy said. “I’d say we have pretty similar personalities.” The dynamic duo returned from Brisbane late last month after representing the Peninsula hockey squad, gaining invaluable experience as they constantly push each other to do better. “It was a big step up, the level was probably equivalent to playing A-grade hockey in Cairns,” said Maddy, 16. “It was really fast.”

While Maddy terrorises opposition goal keepers as a super slick striker, Kate is one step behind her, watching her back as a sturdy defender. “It’s easy to play together when we know what each other is going to do,” Maddy said. “There were a few games last year where we played a lot together and we were doing one-twos, just passing in between each other up the field.” Both Maddy and Kate play in the Cairns hockey competition, with the pair hoping to study at James Cook University next year after they graduate high school. “I’m hoping to study health or medicine and Kate’s the same,” she said.

The Roosters have missed a golden opportunity to climb back into the winners circle after surrendering a late lead to draw 14-all with the Tully Tigers on Saturday night. Leading 14-10 with 50 seconds left on the clock, the Roosters were forced to share the two competition points after Tully pulled off a length of the field intercept. The intercept resulted in a try for Tully which locked the score at 14-all, with the kick to come. Tully’s after the bell conversion attempt was waved away and saved the Roosters from defeat to leave the final result level and another frustrating finish for the Roosters who let the win slip away. After leading 14-6 at the break, the Roosters defended well in the second term, but came unstuck with horror ball control in the final minute. For the Roosters, who have not won a game since April 29, it was a much needed improved effort and keeps them in the top five finals race which is headed by Innisfail 22, Brothers 17, Ivanhoes 16, Mossman 14, Atherton 11, Tully 10, Yarrabah 9, Kangaroos 8, Edmonton 8, Mareeba 8, Suburbs 7. The Mareeba Gladiators recorded another loss going down 34-16 to Brothers at Stan Williams Park, on Saturday. This Saturday the Roosters and Gladiators will come head to head for a second local derby match up. The main

Fifteen-year-old Dimbulah State School student Christofer Gentle will embark on the trip of a lifetime to pursue his ambition of becoming a professional football player. Christofer has been selected from a group of elite football (soccer) players from across the state for a 10-day tour of the United Kingdom – playing against under 16 National Premier League (NPL) teams from Scotland and England. The FNQ Heat player, who played for the Dimbulah Barra’s juniors from the age of 11 to 15, said he is hoping clubs will see his potential and the possibility of being offered a scholarship into one of their

academies. “I’m a bit nervous but I should be alright,” he said. The confident youngster leaves on the November 21 this year for his quest, but he understands that making it in world football takes a lot of time, sacrifice and dedication. Should it not materialise, he will continue in the representative field in Australia to see how far he can go. “My mum and Dad are very excited and so am I,” said Christofer is just short of the $8000 required to make the trip – anyone wishing to make a contribution can call Corrin Murray, on 0458 314 516.

game kicks off at 6pm at Davies Park in Mareeba. The under 18's play at 3pm, with the reserve grade at 4.30pm. Results of the Cairns District Rugby League first grade games played over the weekend: Ivanhoes defeated Mossman 28-14, Brothers downed Mareeba 34-16, Innisfail stopped Edmonton 44-24, Suburbs and Yarrabah drew 36 all and Roosters and Tigers draw 14-all.

Ciggy Butts defy odds in grand final victory CHAMPIONS: Ciggy Butts team members celebrate their grand final win in the Mareeba Winter Season Men’s Championship.

UK bound in pursuit of a dream

Dimbulah Lions Club President Eddie Toffanello presented a cheque of $2,000 to Christofer Gentle to help him pursue his dream of becoming a professional football player.

Roosters Christopher Campbell in action against Tully on Saturday night at Tully.

UNDERDOGS Ciggy Butts have staged a grand final upset after beating favourites Red Devils 50-41 in the Mareeba Winter Season Men’s Championship last week. Undefeated all season, it was the highly fancied Devils’ game to lose as Ciggy Butts piled on the pressure early in the first quarter. Once again, Butts’ centre Warren Thomson led the charge throughout the match, scoring points left, right and centre from the three point line and inside the circle. The Devils’ lack of fitness clearly showed, unable to keep pace with Butts despite the best efforts of player of the season Clint Cameron. Despite struggling with shooting accuracy at the three-point line, it was Cameron’s silky skills around the basket which kept his side in contention with the Devils down 28-18 at half-time. The third quarter was much the same for the Devils, giving away some cheap turnovers as Butts maintained their 10 point buffer at 39-29. It was more dire news for Devils after Juni Bor-

daos was sent off in the fourth quarter for amassing five fouls, allowing Devils to effectively run riot. But young Luke Fresna stepped up for Butts, twice producing a brilliant centre court play, which put Cameron through to the net with just minutes to go. A slick three-pointer by Fresna followed, but it wasn’t enough to save the Devils, going down 50-41 to Butts at full-time. Speaking to The Express after the game, Butts’ captain Fabio Nocilla praised his side’s resilience. “We had a great warrior out there in Warren. We just gave him a hand in defence,” he said. “Between the third and fourth quarter, we had a couple of bad shots and they were going faster than us in a couple of plays. “Our defence is what got us the win.” Devils’ captain Andy Harris conceded the better team won on the night. “We played pretty poorly and they played a very good team game,” he said. “They moved the ball much better than us.”

EXPRESS sPORT goal-scoring frenzy: Dennis Allen in action and inset, Bulls celebrate after one of their five goals PHOTOS BY Leevi Elmes.

MAREEBA’s gymnasts have more space to bust a move or two with a new building extension. The $257,000 extension, funded by Mareeba Shire Council, will be officially opened this Saturday in a boost for Mareeba Gymnastics Club’s 350 students. “We’ve been using the facility since the start of the year and that has allowed us to put on extra classes to meet demand,” club coaching director Kelly Tulloch said. “I’ve grown up with gymnastics and it gives you not only sporting skills, but life skills. “It’s a hard sport but it teaches you dedication and persistence.” Mrs Tulloch said the extension would enable the club to host competitions once more, after Gymnastics Queensland changed their safety guidelines about three years ago. “Our building was not physically long enough to have a 25m vault run,” she said. “Now with the extension, we will be able to apply to hold those competitions again.” Two high bars, two pommel horses, rings and a mushroom stand are just some of the equipment items that deck out the new building. The club is in the process of sourcing funding for foam matting which will make them competition-ready by the end of the year. Mrs Tulloch said the club had a proud history of representative stars, including a record 21 Mareeba gymnasts across all levels qualifying for state championships last year.

Bulls destroy Stratford MAREEBA Bulls have made an emphatic statement in the FNQ Premier League with a 5-1 demolition of ladder leaders Stratford Dolphins on Saturday. In the lead up to the replay of last season’s grand final, the Bulls attacking flair was on display, and the home side showed their promise early with striker Steven Cater scoring a double inside the opening ten minutes for a 2-0 lead. The Bulls opening 15 minutes were mouth watering, moving the Dolphins around the park at will. But Mareeba seemed to rest on their laurels and started to allow the visitors back into the game with Stratford dominating the final 20 minutes of the first half. They were duly rewarded with a penalty at the stroke of halftime, striker Joe Rusch making no mistake to go 2-1 at the break. The Dolphins may have finished the first half stronger, but a rejuvenated Mareeba started the second half better. The Bulls were awarded a penalty of their own in the 51st minute after midfielder Wayne Srhoj was chopped down in the box. Dennis Allen converted, scoring on the second attempt at goal. The Bulls continued to keep Stratford on the back foot before gaining a second penalty when

Paul Ruiz was brought down in the 71st minute. Allen once again stepped up to convert his second of the night and open up a 4-1 lead at Borzi Park. Bulls talisman Srhoj completed the rout, finishing off a sweeping attack to give the home side a 5-1 win in front of a large home crowd. Mareeba coach Alex Srhoj said the fact his players were able to turn the match around at the break was the difference between the two sides. “We came out of the blocks firing, took the lead, but seemed to rest on our laurels,” he said. “Stratford was the better side heading into the break, but we didn’t panic, we tweaked a couple of things, worked hard and got the result we wanted, totally outplaying them in the second half. “I’m proud of the players, tonight was our test, tonight we stood up, tonight we showed who we are.” Overall it was a great weekend for the Bulls who recorded four wins out of six. The reserves won their match 2-nill, the under 18's won 3-2, the 2nd division men continued their unbeaten run winning 3-2 win over the Leichhardt Lions, the ladies went down 2-1 to Stratford and the under 18's (B) side lost 6-3 to the Redlynch Cyclones.
