A big weekend of Cricket is set for the far north.

After winning the twoday grand final earlier this year, minor premiers Atherton, will be hoping to make it two from two as they head into this Sunday’s Cricket Far North first grade one-day grand final. But they will have to wait till Saturday to find out their opponent after Rovers and Barron face off on Saturday.

Scarecrow festival set to return in 2020

THE Tolga Scarecrow Festival is back on the 2020 calendar after a two year hiatus.

The Tolga Scarecrow Festival focuses on family fun, old fashioned games and much more.

The festival was scrapped in 2019 due to the absence of a committee, this year however things are looking up with the festival having the backing of the Atherton Chamber of Commerce.

A new committee will be voted in to help organise the event at an upcoming planning meeting this Saturday, February 29.

While there is no set date for the festival as yet, October is being looked at as a possible month to host the festival as it has in previous years.

Interested parties are now encouraged to register their expressions of interest for volunteers, committee members, entertainment, sponsors and stall holders.

The planning meeting location will be announced after expressions of interest are shown through registrations on the website.

Improving men’s health MEN on the Atherton Tablelands will have the opportunity to discover how to lead better lives with the local Freemasons set to host the latest in a series of state-wide events focused on improving men’s mental and physical health.

On this Friday, February 28, Hand Heart Pocket the charitable arm of Freemasons Queensland, and Barrine Masonic Lodge, in partnership with community health non-profit CheckUP, will run a free public information session in Yungaburra as part of the ‘Men’s Health Matters’ awareness campaign.

ecutive Officer Gary Mark said empowering people to lead better lives was an important part of the charity’s work in the community.

“Improving men’s mental and physical health, both at a state-wide and grassroots level, is part of our charitable focus, which is why we’ve partnered with CheckUP to bring this potentially life-saving initiative to communities across Queensland,” Mr Mark said.

The free information session will be delivered by Dr Lex Peters a psychologist from Atherton and will cover a range of topics such as nutrition and

physical activity, early detection of cancer, diabetes and heart disease, mental health and relationships.

CheckUP CEO Ann Maree Liddy said this format is the perfect vehicle to spread awareness about men’s health and wellbeing.

“We are delighted to have formed this partnership with Hand Heart Pocket and Freemason Lodges throughout the state to deliver this campaign,” Ms Liddy said.

“The importance of mental and physical health can’t be ignored and providing a safe environment for attendees to have

conversations about these matters is essential.”

Barrine Masonic Lodge representative Vincent Mantio said they are proud to be hosting the Men’s Health Matters initiative on the Atherton Tablelands.

“In addition to our Lodge work, we always like to do our bit for the community, and by hosting this event, we will be helping to highlight a range of important issues related to men’s health.”

Glamping approved for KUR-Cow A NEW 22 tent glamping site has been approved at the KURCow tourist attraction and farm in Kuranda.

At the Mareeba Shire Council meeting on Wednesday, Council approved the new development subject to conditions.

According to Council minutes, the two stages of the development will proceed as follows. Stage 1 – tented camps for 28 persons, in the form of 14 x 1 bedroom tents and Stage 2 – Tented camps for 26 persons, in the form of 5 x 2 bedroom tents and 3 x 1 bedroom tents.

Council found that “It is recommended that the application be approved in full, subject to conditions.”

Some of those conditions include; that no more than 54 persons are to be accommodated on-site in the tents and no more than 150 tourists/visitors are permitted on-site at any time.

MSC Mayor Tom Gilmore told The Express “An application came before Council for glamping at a nature-based tourist attraction in Kuranda which will provide accommodation for people visiting the site,” Said Mayor Gilmore.

“Council was pleased to approve the application which is seen to be an excellent opportunity for a new unique tourism experience to the region.

“The application was very comprehensive in so far as it demonstrated that the proposed development meets all the town planning requirements for a nature-based tourism attraction.”

“So we won’t be able to start building until the market conditions improve.”

The downward spiral has also seen some staff restructuring.

KUR-Cow has also made an application to MSC for emergency approval “to allow for self-drive tourists until June 30, 2020.”

At the moment The KURCow farm is restricted to bussed tourists only. Reever and Ocean requested that Council allow for self-drive tourists until June 30, 2020.

Mark Lawson says this is only temporary until tourist numbers bounce back.

“We are only asking to allow a limited number of self-drivers for a temporary time.”

“Nobody could have predicted what COVID-19 was going to do to our tourism industry.

“We are not asking for a hand out from the Council, just a temporary lift of our conditions to allow self-drivers and locals to access the KUR-Cow farm, while the virus is hurting group in-bound tourism numbers.”

Mareeba Shire Mayor Tom Gilmore said in principle, Council agreed to urgently consider an application to allow self-drive visitors access the tourist attraction.

“In response to the recent bushfires and Coronavirus emergency and the effect these events are having on the tourism industry, Council moved as a matter of urgency in an attempt to ensure the business can continue to operate during these difficult circumstances,” he said.

“Furthermore, the livelihoods of those working at the naturebased tourism attraction have been put into jeopardy and they may well lose their jobs if there is a lasting negative impact on the tourism industry.”

Council asked that the development application be delegated to the CEO due to the urgency of the matter and also due to the impending election.

At the Moment KUR-Cow is offering 50% off the entry price for locals. Entry includes the mini animals, hayride and cattle feeding. Bookings are essential.

Uncertainty over TRC Division 6 TWO new candidates have put their hand up for Division 6 in the upcoming Tablelands Regional Council (TRC) election adding uncertainty as to whether Division 6 is a two or three horse race.

Former Tablelands Police Sergeant Bernie Wilce will be going up against sixth generation Tablelander Daryl Drury, both men ran unsuccessfully in 2016. A question mark still remains over whether current Division 6 Councillor Owen Byrnes is running at all.

Mr Wilce who retired from the police force in 2014 said he missed dealing face to face with the community “For 40 years I worked in the police force with communities and I miss it, I love counter disaster management, event management and planning.

I miss that personal interaction; I really miss working with and for the community.”

Mr Wilce concedes there is a lot of confusion as to whether Councillor Byrnes is running or

not.

“It would make the process for me a lot clearer if I knew if councillor Byrne was running or not. I like what Owen has done in council and if I had known further out that he was going to run for division 6, I wouldn’t have run, because he really is cemented within his local community.”

The other confirmed contender for Division 6 is Darryl Drury.

“I want to put my hand up for Division 6, because I want to make a change in the community “It has disheartened me over the years to see the ratepayers money being wasted, as it seems that the current Council is not supporting the people, families and businesses of the Tablelands.

“If elected I would like to see the cost of rates decline as it is too much of a struggle for families especially farmers to pay these costly bills twice a year, it is a lot of money that most individuals just do not have.

“I urge everyone to be more careful when placing their votes this time round as the divisions have changed for the TRC Election.”

At the end of 2019 the Australian Electoral Commission re-drew local division boundaries due to population changes.

Current Division 6 Councillor Owen Byrnes originally lived in Division 6, after the boundary changes he found himself living in Division 4. While there is no law that states a councillor must live within their division, Councillor Byrnes believes that councillors should live in their own division.

“I’ve publicly stated that I be-

lieve councillors should live in their division. Through no fault of my own I’ve been moved into division 4. If I decide to run and want to be a man of principal and stick to my word, I will need to run in division 4.”

If Councillor Byrnes does decide to contest Division 4 it means he will be running against current Councillor Samantha Banks.

“I have to make a decision, to run for my current Division 6 or Division 4 where I now live under the new boundary changes.

There is a chance I might not run at all depending on a few personal arrangements in the coming weeks.”

“I haven’t made up my mind yet.”

Other areas that Cr Toppin would like to see more action on is the promotion of eco and adventure tourism.

“This would be done collaboratively with the Chamber of Commerce to bring more tourism dollars into our shire,” “This would lead to increased employment through strong economic growth and stability particularly youth employment, as many of our youth exit Mareeba and move to larger regional centres for employment.”

Liaising with State and Federal Governments for upgrades of transport corridors is another area.

“The Kuranda range is woefully inadequate and incapable of servicing the needs of the shires current population, let alone supporting growth and an increase in industry.”

On reliable access to safe and sustainable water Cr Toppin said: “As a Shire, we are reliant on seasonal rainfall and the whims of too many stakeholders; it is vital that a long-term plan be adopted and adequate infrastructure be installed to secure the Shire’s water supplies.”

And finally an increase in growth of population and infrastructure.

“It’s important that we have the best infrastructure and facilities to support the needs of all residents in the Shire. Adequate recreational facilities, parks and community amenities, health agencies and services (including age care facilities and support), public transport and transportation facilities need to be planned, funded and strengthened.

Councillor Toppin says she is a truly independent candidate with no political ties to any parties.

“I’m running as an independent Mayor, so that I am 100 per cent independent, with no obligations or loyalties to third parties or individuals. I believe it’s essential if we want strong accountability and transparency.”

On the other hand Councillor Nipper Brown is happy to be part of team.

“Being part of a team means that the ratepayers are getting five people with a common vi-

sion for the shire,” he said.

“While we share a common vision, it doesn’t necessarily mean we always have the same opinions.

“I have always been in a team, when we de-amalgamated I was part of Tom Gilmore’s team.”

The main platform my team are running on is: “Maintain the financial stability that council currently is enjoying and to increase communication with the ratepayers.”

Councillor Brown also believes the TLPI is a hurdle to the current council.

“That is one of the first things as Mayor I will try and fix. It needs to be negotiated with the Minister to be taken off us or see if there is a way to water it down. I don’t agree with the way it’s been handled,” he said.

“I believe the Kuranda Range is part of the problem and they have implemented the TLPI due to pressure from other departments, I agree with Mayor Gilmore’s letter and comments.

“As a council we are doing really well and I hope to continue that trajectory but there are always things that we can improve upon.

“I would like to improve Council’s communication across the board. I would like us to have a regular community BBQ, where all the councillors and the mayor do all the cooking, making sure that we are there for the rate payers and available for a chat.

“Also as Mayor I would be in Kuranda about once a fortnight in a pop up shop, so that people can come talk to me and one day every couple of weeks pop into other areas across the shire.”

Nipper Brown would also like to see the Council do more lobbying to get the Kuranda range fixed.

“The widening of the range is not going to happen in my lifetime, so as a council we need to be investigating and lobbying the state and federal governments for other alternatives.”

THE race for the Mareeba Shire Council Mayor is currently a two horse race between experienced Councillors Angela Toppin and Nipper Brown.

Both candidates are experienced councillors, both are long term locals and both are passionate about the region.

So what are some of the main differences between councillors Toppin and Brown?

Before getting involved in local politics, Angela Toppin worked as an educator, teacher and principal at some of the region’s largest public high schools before deciding to run as a councillor for the Mareeba Shire Council (MSC) four years ago.

Councillor Toppin considers that her career “has equipped me to manage and lead the MSC into the new decade.”

“Schools, especially independent public schools are complex organisations requiring a plethora of skills – communication, collaboration, negotiation, and planning. Being accountable to the public was always a priority of my job,” she said.

Councillor Toppin believes that under Mayor Gilmore the MSC has been a steady ship.

“I think we have done a wonderful job over the past four years and I hope to continue that steadiness and consistency that we have delivered over the last term of local government,” Although she does believe that some obstacles have been put in council’s way.

“One of the biggest hurdles for council at the moment is the Temporary Local Planning Instrument (TLPI) that was handed down from the state government,” Councillor Toppin agrees with Mayor Gilmore thoughts on the TLPI. “I think it’s absolutely disgusting what the State government has done, they handed down this TLPI without consultation. The Minister hasn’t even been to the Tablelands to get a cooks tour of the local developments. The TLPI has more to do with strangling development than saving good agricultural land.”

Atherton accident victim passes AN 83-year-old woman who was struck down by a car in Atherton last week has died.

The woman was struck by a ute while she was on the zebra crossing near the corner of Main Street and Vernon Street Atherton around 10am on Tuesday, February 18.

It's believed that she was initially transported to the Atherton hospital but was then flown to Townsville Hospital where it’s believed she passed away on

Sunday morning.

It’s believed that the accident victim received serious head injuries due to the accident Forensic Crash Unit investigations are ongoing, and the 59year old male driver is assisting police.

Anyone who may have witnessed the accident or has dashcam footage is urged to contact police using reference number QP2000343028.

Changes to FNQ Police structure TWO major changes have recently been announced affecting policing on the Tablelands and across Far North Queensland.

Commissioner Katarina Carroll and Police Minister Mark Ryan have announced the Queensland Police Service (QPS) will transition to a four Deputy Commissioner model with a new Deputy Commissioner Regional Queensland to be permanently based in Townsville.

North Queensland will then be split in to two police regions, one in Townsville and the other in Cairns, with both cities getting their very own Assistant Commissioner.

In 2013 the then Police Commissioner Ian Stewart combined the two regions into one larger police region, something that was unpopular with local police at the time. This decision now reverses that model.

The newly established Townsville based Deputy Commissioner will be responsible for policing across all of regional Queensland, in the past all Dep-

uty Commissioners were based in Brisbane.

Police Commissioner Katarina Carroll said the four Deputy Commissioner model was crucial to helping the QPS better understand the different policing challenges and opportunities that will be faced both now and in the future.

“The introduction of regional and southern Queensland Deputy Commissioners will help strengthen important partnerships with government agencies, non-government organisations and community groups to ultimately prevent crime and enhance community safety,” the Commissioner said Group Inspector for the Tablelands patrol group Russell Rhodes said “this decision is being supported by all local police.”

The new Regional Queensland Commissioner to be located in Townsville has been announced as Paul Taylor. The new Cairns Assistant commissioner is expected to be announced in the coming weeks.

FOR SALE: The Tobacco Sales Floor in Mareeba is now for sale.

FOR years the Tobacco Sales Floor at Reynolds Street, Mareeba was the home of the thriving tobacco industry.

Tobacco growing started in Queensland in 1929 and the last bales were sold on the Mareeba Sale floor on 26 February 2004. At its height tobacco farming was one of the biggest employers on the Tablelands.

Remzi Mulla came to Australia as young child in 1939 his family had migrated from

Albania and settled in Mareeba. He started work as a tobacco farmer and eventually worked his way up to be Chairman of the Tobacco Leaf Marketing board.

“On sales day we could have between 70-100 people on the floor, it was very busy people would come from all over the shire,” said Remzi.

All that stands on the site of the old Tobacco Sales Floor now is one of the original two

buildings and some of the original offices.

Remzi claims the original buildings were shipped in from the Burdekin where the original sales floors were. “Some of the wood in those buildings could be getting close to 100 hundred years old,” he said.

The whole property is just over 7 acres and is now for sale. The original building can be used for storage, or the original persevered timber can

be taken advantage of and sold for salvage value According to Sheldon Mulla, General Manager of NQ Co-Op: “We have owned the property since we started selling tobacco there, this is the first time the property has been on the market for over 70 years,” he said.

Drink Driving, Kuranda Police have charged an international tourist after a traffic intercept in Kuranda on Friday evening (February 14).

The 32-year-old man was intercepted on the Kennedy Highway at about 11pm where he allegedly returned a reading of 0.139 per cent BAC. He was issued with an immediate driver suspension and is expected to appear in Mareeba Magistrates Court on March 9, charged with drink driving.

Traffic offences, Mareeba Police have charged a local boy after a traffic complaint on Saturday afternoon (February 15) in Mareeba.

It’s alleged that a 17-year-old boy was observed riding a motorbike along Fenwick Street at about 4pm without a helmet.

It’s also alleged that the motorbike was unregistered and uninsured, and when police attempted to intercept the motorbike, the rider fled into park land.

When police later located the motorbike and the boy, he was also allegedly unlicensed.

The boy will be dealt with according to the provisions of the Youth Justice Act 1992.

Grievous bodily harm, Herberton Police have charged a local man after an incident in Herberton on

Saturday evening (February 15).

It’s alleged that a 50-yearold Herberton man became involved in a verbal exchange with a 21-year-old local man at a licensed premise around 8pm, however the 21-year-old man walked away from the argument.

It’s then alleged that the 50-year-old man followed the 21-year-old along Grace Street where a physical altercation occurred, leaving the younger man in hospital with injuries to his face and head.

Police attended the 50-yearold man’s address around 9.50pm where he allegedly further assaulted an officer and resisted arrest by continually struggling as attempted were made to handcuff him.

The man appeared in Mareeba Magistrates Court the next day, charged with one count each of grievous bodily harm, assault police and obstruct police.

Traffic crash, Yungaburra Police are investigating after a vehicle crashed in Yungaburra on Thursday evening (February 20).

Initial investigations suggest a 45-year-old Millaa Millaa woman has allegedly failed to negotiate a left-hand bend on Fig Street at about 8pm.

Member for Cook comes to town MEMBER for Cook Cynthia Lui, met with locals in Mareeba last week as part of her mobile office tour across the electorate.

It was Ms Lui’s second mobile office, since closing her Mareeba office in November of last year.

The member for Cook said “It’s been really good to hear from locals and sit down with them and have a conversation.

I’m most appreciative when people are happy to share their views, positive or negative.”

A number of people came prepared with issues. “I’ve met with a wide range of people, including local councillors and concerned residents.”

A NEW aged care facility currently in front of the Mareeba Shire council has the capacity to employ hundreds of local trade’s people and over 100 fulltime staff once the development has been given the green light.

The facility to be built on Haren Street in Mareeba will be able to accommodate 120 people with 24 hour aged care.

Fall Armyworm found in Bamaga BIOSECURITY Queensland have confirmed that the Fall armyworm has been detected on the Australian mainland less than a week after announcing that the invasive insect had been found in the Torres Strait.

It’s been confirmed that a single moth was caught in a trap at Bamaga. Biosecurity Queensland are now working with the Federal Government on a response plan.

The insect’s larvae are known to eat more than 350 different crop species and could be disastrous for Australia’s Agricultural industry if the species gains a stronghold. In areas where the moth has taken hold, the destruction of crops has happened almost overnight.

Last week, CSIRO researcher Wee Tek Tay told the ABC “None of the 65 countries the species has invaded had successfully eradicated it, and that Australia would also struggle to rid itself of the pest should it establish on the mainland.”

Biosecurity Queensland’s Malcolm Letts said specialised moth traps would be placed across Queensland to detect and contain any further spread of the pest.

“Destruction of crops can happen almost overnight when population levels are high,” he said.

According to the Depart-

ment of Primary Industries website “The fall armyworm is native to tropical to subtropical areas of America.

Initial detection in Africa in 2016 saw the fall armyworm spread to more than 30 countries over 3 years. In 2018, the fall armyworm was detected in India and Sri Lanka. In 2019 it had spread to Bangladesh, Thailand, Myanmar, China and Indonesia.

A suitable climate, trade and transport routes mean Australia could potentially face a high threat of fall armyworm invasions originating from neighbouring and trading countries.”

It’s believed that local Holden dealers were only notified of the news approximately 30 minutes before media outlets and that Holden will make between 600-800 people redundant by the end of the year.

Local dealers have said that it’s too early to tell if any local jobs will be lost.

According to a statement from General Motors and Holden Australia: “With a heavy heart, Holden announced today that General Motors will be retiring the Holden brand in Australia and New Zealand. This announcement will be felt deeply by the entire Holden family, our customers

and our fans.

“We will immediately begin working with our dealer partners across Australia and New Zealand to implement an orderly transition, including support for our existing customers.

“Holden will continue to support customers in the following ways – honour all existing warranties and guarantees and all free scheduled servicing offers. Ongoing call centre support and provide servicing and spare parts for at least 10 years, through national aftersales networks in Australia and New Zealand and recalls or safetyrelated issues if they arise.

“GM has taken this difficult decision after an exhaustive analysis of the investment required for Holden to be competitive for the long term in Australia’s and New Zealand’s new car markets. Regrettably, this assessment determined such an investment could not meet GM's investment thresholds, including delivering an appropriate return.”

QLD Parliament coming to region QUEENSLAND Premier Annastacia Palaszczuk has told Parliament Cairns would host a special Regional Cabinet meeting in April to focus on jobs and infrastructure for Far North Queensland as well as the region’s recovery from the Coronavirus crisis.

IT is my opinion that it should be noted during care taker mode up to the election, State Legislation states a council must not enter into a contract above $411,630.00.

This council (Tablelands Regional Council) allows more than double that under delegation to the CEO. I believe council has duty and obligation to ask questions about tenders in the public interest and to uphold the principles of local government.

Also preferred supplier arrangements can’t direct a lot of income to a small minority if the organisation does not monitor fair equity.

Kuranda Range alternative routes won’t work

WITH the beautiful scenic Kuranda Range Road close to capacity, politicians are desperately grasping at straws.

Several alternative routes, to connect the Tablelands with Cairns, have been mentioned by people including Warren Entsch and Bob Katter.

It appears to have slipped their attention, that there is no way to avoid the Wet Tropics World Heritage Area. In fact the existing route is one of the narrowest sections to cross this precious UNESCO site.

Any alternative routes would

be governed by the same rigorous environmental constraints as trying to upgrade the Kuranda Range Road.

It seems there is no quick and cheap solution to the problem.

Perhaps Mareeba and the Tablelands should aim to become more self sufficient and independent from Cairns.

Past development has turned out unsustainable, as many people seem to predominately rely on commuting to Cairns for work.

Does Mareeba Shire need Divisions?

The question gets raised for good reason. Outlying communities account for only 30% of the votes. How can our six Councillors service communities across the Shire when the Mareeba area commands 70% of their priorities?

To their credit, Councillors try hard to spread their time and attention across the whole Shire.

Their effort is commendable.

But many people in the smaller communities still feel neglected and want to have a divisional Councillor of their own.

and Kuranda but Council rejected the proposal. Divisions are like fences: they enforce boundaries and isolation, and can lead to petty competition.

What to do?

One long-time Kuranda resident has suggested to me that a more flexible approach should be considered. Let’s call it the “Balanced Districts” solution.

First step would be to draw up three new (informal) districts: East, Central, and West.

Each district would have two dedicated Councillors “on duty” and in their service. Then implement a rotation scheme for pairs of Councillors to serve each district for 16 months.

The 16 month rotation would give each Councillor an opportunity to serve in each of the three districts over their 4 year term. This would enhance Council’s overall familiarity with issues across the Shire, and would reduce the tendency of people to settle into cliques and tribes.

At the end of each shift, the community would be invited to rate the performance of their Councillors.

I believe Balanced Districts would provide a higher level of accountability, improved representation for smaller communities, and a better decisionmaking process within Council.

Mareeba is a Shire of diversity, from rainforest to farms to savanna; from fitter to film star to family. I believe we

need stronger relationships, not stronger fences. Full credit to the community members who are working through these issues and looking for better futures for our Shire.

What’s going on at TRC?

THE recent Report by the Queensland Audit Office of the TRC Annual Accounts for 20182019 revealed deficiencies that are a serious indictment upon the way the TRC Administration conducts the Council’s affairs.

The first was that the Books simply did not balance and the records “were generally not of high quality” and detailed this matter as “ a serious deficiency” Another part of this serious deficiency was that Employee Entitlements did not reconcile and that the Payroll rates were not updated to reflect FY19 rates Secondly, that the Council Asset Register was not up to date for the second year following recommendations during 2017-2018. This was classified as a deficiency.

So what is going on?

Balancing the books is fundamental to any financial, taxation, reporting obligations and certainly fundamental to a set of Local Government Books of

Account.

Keeping track of employee entitlements and making sure their pay rates are correct is also a fundamental obligation and we have seen and read of the irresponsible activities of some giants of retailing who have been underpaying and misleading their staff.

And then the Asset Register.

So we’re not sure what we own, we are not sure how old it is and if it works economically and we know that this was a problem last year but we haven’t fixed it yet. In fact the problem has been in existence for some 6 years At the same time these matters were released so were a set of figures which show that TRC has one of the highest payrolls to revenue ratios in Queensland and its risen over the last year.

These figures and assertions are not frivolous nor minor and they reflect an Administration which is not doing its bread and butter role properly in our interests.

It also reflects that our current crop of councillors are not exercising effective authority or are being fooled by their senior staff. Either way we should be entitled to expect more from the senior council staff and our councillors.

RECENTLY I was chatting with a candidate for the upcoming council elections and I asked “why are you running for council’’? I got the usual spiel about “being a good local citizen, who had been involved with several clubs, had worked for the public service. “etc.

I corrected her “they’re your qualifications, WHY are you running for council” “Because I want to give back to my community”” “But why?”

This is where I got a blank stare and that strange head tilt that puppies give you when they don’t understand what you’re doing as a human.

With the local council elections just around the corner and with plenty of incumbent’s running against a lot of new nominees, we should all be asking WHY? WHY are new roads important? WHY is bringing a budget back to surplus so important, WHY are you running?

Being a councillor in our local council is a thankless task, someone is always going to be unhappy with whatever decision you make. The average wage of a councillor is between 60 and 70 thousand dollars, most councillors already have other jobs or businesses to run, so why the extra work?

Is that extra money worth all the extra pressure, scrutiny, criticism and time away from friends and family? Or is it for purely selfish reasons? I’m sure there are one or two candidates running for political point scoring, revenge or for their own personal gain.

Simon Sinek is a BritishAmerican motivational speaker and the author of five books, including “Start with Why”. He says most people/businesses have their goals back to front.

As do our politicians, who run with What, How, Why. Most candidates will say something like: What I’m going to do, how

I’m going to do it and why I’m going to do it.

According to Sinek all great leaders inspire action by working back to front.

Why, How and What.

What we really need to be asking our elected officials whether it be local, state or federal is WHY? Not how or what.

Why are you doing this?

How are you going to do that?

What will the outcome be?

Sinek says that customers/ voters don’t buy what you do, but why you do it.

In the coming weeks there are several Q&A’s with local councillors in town halls and meetings places. If you get a chance to ask a question or even get chatting face to face, don’t ask what they are going to do, or how they are going to do it, ask them why.

Mareeba SHS takes the mental health of everybody seriously. We are partnering with the North Queensland Cowboys to deliver lessons around The Resilience Project, supported by Northern Queensland Primary Health Network. These will commence in semester 2 with staff having access to lesson resources which will address resilience for individuals. The project is being run in a number of schools in the area and has shown positive rewards to assisting everybody in the school community to handle situations better in their lives. There will be more details coming including a launch of the project in late May.

Tobias Patterson has been selected to represent Mareeba State High School and his community in an elite Indigenous Soccer Identification Program.

His skills, character, attitude and desire all were assessed excellent and he is now offered the opportunity to travel to Sydney for 10 days to live and train with the Sydney F.C. Football Club, under a training program run by the John Moriaty Association, supporting indigenous Soccer Players.

Tobias will be kitted out with all the latest gear, boots, shirts, shorts, tracksuit, bags and all travel and accommodation are part of the package. The training camp has been made available to only one boy and one girl from the Tablelands which will be part of an ongoing program in the future.

Mareeba Bulls Soccer Club are also right on board supporting this opportunity, with Club Secretary Sandro Soncin recognising how this particular program will help fill another part of the Jigsaw of the WORLD GAME in Mareeba and Mareeba Schools and Education programs. AFTER 39 years as a tyre fitter and manager of Central Tyre Service in Mareeba Doug Stallan is going fishing and camping.

“At the moment I’m getting used to retirement just working around the yard and cleaning up getting things organised to go away and do some fishing and camping I bought a 4WD and a camper trailer and really looking forward to it.

“Safety is still the most important thing with tyres from the old days till now nothing has changed, things like tyre pressure, having the right tyres on your vehicle they all go towards safe motoring.

ST STEPHENS Catholic College (SSCC) inducted its new senior leaders for 2020 last Monday, with five representative groups ready to lead the College.

The leadership structure of SSCC comprises of four College Captains, eight Pastoral House Leaders for their sporting houses, the Student Representative Council, the Social Justice Committee and the newly introduced Cultural Leaders.

Funding to combat cyberbulling

The State Government is throwing $1 million behind an initiative to help families and schools deal with cyber-bullying.

Hundreds of Queensland schools are set to access new cybersafety programs as the Government partners with Dolly’s Dream and the Alannah and Madeline Foundation.

Premier Annastacia Palaszczuk said the partnership, which would prioritise rural and regional schools, was a key component of the Government’s $3.5 million commitment to implement the recommendations of the AntiCyberbullying Taskforce – the first of its kind in Australia.

“We’re doing everything we can to help stamp out this insidious problem in our society and as a community, we’re doing it together,” the Premier said.

“All Queensland schools can register to be part of the milliondollar program but we especially want rural and regional schools to get on board.

“This is just one of the ways we can reach all corners of our state and further educate our children that cyberbullying is unacceptable, it’s hurtful and it’s dangerous.”

Minister for Education Grace Grace said the program will incorporate a range of educational tools, workshops and one-on-one support for principals, teachers, students and parents.

More information on the programs available to schools and how to apply is available on the Department of Education website. Applications close on Sunday, March 15, 2020.

WINNERS: McKinley house sport captains – Elizabeth Martens, Tracy Martens, Matteo Fregona and Robby Soncin with the 2020 annual swimming carnival shield.

Students took to the pool for a day of competition and fun as part of the annual Mareeba State High School swimming carnival.

After a full day of events, McKinley house has another trophy under their belt after winning the 2020 carnival held on Friday, February 14 at the Mareeba Pool.

EXPRESS SPORT PORT Come and try Pickleball PICKLEBALL is a sport that has taken Australia by storm and is one of the fastest growing sports in the country, with a come and try day being hosted in Malanda come March.

Pickleball is a paddle sport that was created using aspects of tennis, badminton and PingPong, culminating in a sport that can cater to all ages and skill levels.

The sport can be played on both an inside and an outside court, with doubles or singles being forms of play.

Frances Pelgrave, a 76yr old Tableland local is heading up the come and try day for the sport and encourages people to come and try a sport they may fall in love with.

“We are just trying to get the sport up and going on the Tablelands,” she said.

“It’s a good chance for people to come and try something new that the whole family can enjoy.

“It is a non-competitive sport that we play on an inside court which is important in the trop-

ics.”

The games can last between 10-12 minutes, with three sessions being offered on the come and try day.

The come and try day for Pickleball is being held at the Malanda State High School on Saturday March 7, with all ages and skill levels welcome.

Starting at 10am, the sessions run until 2pm with a break at lunch. The sessions will include teaching and games supervised by coaches and players from Cairns.

LADIES cricket suffered a big blow last weekend with both Mareeba teams losing their respective T20 games.

The Mareeba Seafood King Ladies side went up against Norths at Endeavour Park on Sunday, February 16.

Mareeba won the toss and decided to have a bat on a scorcher of a day, putting Norths in the field.

Mareeba got the ball rolling with openers Janelle Smithwick and Rayna Johnson putting up 40 runs between them.

No.4 batsman Julie Thomas top scored with 37 not out, helping to get her side over the line and to a respectable total, Mareeba finished on 3/115.

Norths then came out to the pitch with a vengeance and looked to put Mareeba down.

After a hard fought battle Mareeba lost against Norths with them getting 4/125 with one over to spare.

Mareeba Cricket Chicks also lost their game against Innisfail at Innisfail Tafe last fortnight.

Applications open for sports bursary

TWO lucky students will get the chance to take home this years Tablelands Regional Council Sports Bursary.

Local students in year 11 and 12 can apply for the bursary that will go to help with the costs of competing and developing their skills.

Abby Toshach and Rohan Hickey were the recipients last year, winning $650 each.

Tablelands Regional Council Mayor Joe Paronella is encour-

aging students to get involved.

“Abby had great success with hockey and cricket while Rohan was very active in triathlons and running,” he said.

We’re very proud to have supported these two young athletes and looking forwards to the opportunity to support two more in 2020.”

Cowboys visit Mareeba time winners of in the history of the competition.

The Cowboys play a trail game in Cairns every two years to an always electric crowd, this year they faced their longest and fiercest rivals, the Brisbane Broncos.

Ross Aldridge, General Manager Commercial for the Cowboys, always looks forward to the biennial match and being

able to visit the Far North.

“This is the greatest rivalry in the NRL, it may be a trial match but it’s always an amazing atmosphere,” he said.

“It’s important to visit Cairns and the area because we are the North Queensland Cowboys, not the Townsville Cowboys.

“It’s always great opportunity to see the Cowboys in action in the flesh.”

Fans also got a special treat being able to see Cowboys newcomer Valentine Holmes, sporting a Cowboys jersey for the first time.

The North Queensland Cowboys won the trial match 18-16.

On Friday the North Queensland Toyota Cowboys merchandise van also stopped by the local dealerships.
