What a
weekend!
The 66th annual Mareeba Rodeo and Festival did not disappoint with more than 13,000 people flocking to Mareeba Rodeo Grounds for a weekend of thrills, spills and rodeo fun. The weekend kicked off on Friday night with the downtown parade where 16-year-old Chloe Hampton (pictured centre) was crowned 2015 Mareeba Rodeo Queen. Caitlin Goodhew (left) was crowned Princess and Miss Popularity was awarded to Celeste Petersen (right). Saturday and Sunday followed with two full days of non-stop action, on and off the arena. E-Amalgamation has been a major discussion topic amongst residents on the Tablelands in recent months. Two local Shire budgets have come and gone. MSC rate increases were relatively low at 3.5 per cent; while further down the Kennedy Highway in the Tablelands Regional Council jurisdiction, they were significantly higher at 12.64 per cent, once various add-ons had been incorporated. But in order to get a true snapshot on how deamalgamation has played out for both shires in recent years, context is naturally required.
Of the 16 original councils that were forced to amalgamate – only four were given the opportunity to de-amalgamate – brought on by the LNP Governments’ election promise; however it is our opinion that had all 16 councils been given the opportunity, all 16 would have chosen to do so. Prior to the de-amalgamation referendum in 2008, a designated document (endorsed by both the TRC and Queensland Treasury Corporation) was provided to ratepayers within Mareeba Shire Council. Several predictions were made on the likelihood of particular projects within the Mareeba Shire jurisdiction; and make for interesting view-

ing in 2015. The figures used to calculate the costs of deamalgamation by the TRC and the Queensland Treasury Corporation (QTC) using a “Worst Case Scenario” were correct but clearly designed to frighten MSC ratepayers into voting “NO”. With the MSC now out of the picture, the reasoning behind TRC rate payers being slugged with a de-amalgamation levy further adds to the theory that, MSC rateable property owners were in fact propping up the Southern Tablelands; hence the need for the levy. On the likelihood of redevelopment of the Mareeba Airport, the document reads:
“It is doubtful a new MSC would continue the progress of this work.” Off the back of significant work put in by the former Member for Cook David Kempton and current MSC Mayor Tom Gilmore between 2011 and 2015, this project progress was eventually realised in April this year. To the tune of $13 million, the upgrade funding was made possible through the allocation of funds via the former Newman Government’s ‘Royalties for Regions’ program; an agreement which was upheld by the Palaszczuk Government. Sharing her passion for craft By Justin Fris MT Molloy’s own Wynn Schiller has taken her passion for crafts and creativity and is sharing her gift with us all. Ms Schiller – who also is an accomplished playwright and illustrator of children’s books – is currently displaying some of her craft collection at the Mareeba Art Society building. All items on display are primarily made out of recycled plastic bottles, which cover both a wealth of genres and colours. The idea for presenting some of her collection to the general public came about after she wrote her first craft book in 2004 and was keen to promote recycling and the excitement of completing craft-based activities. “I was hoping other people could enjoy the items and not throw their bottles away, as so many nice things can be made from them,” she said. “I would enjoy it if young people would come and develop an interest. Not everyone is into crafts, but people are interested in recycling. “I thought if I gave them the ideas, then maybe they will go home and make something. “Lots of people buy an expensive craft activity to do, and do a little bit of it and it eventually sits in the cupboard. “Well with these – you still have to wait for your glue to dry – but you don’t need to spend a great deal of money to do it.” If you would like to learn more about crafts, or would like a unique activity for the children, this is definitely the place for you. Dimbulah Men’s Shed officially opened By Justin Fris
A picturesque day greeted those who attended the official opening of the Dimbulah Men’s Shed last Saturday morning. Since the establishment of the facility (and through the partnership with Jobfind), men across the Tablelands have had a place to talk and work shoulder to shoulder. Issues like depression and suicide are issues are not immune to men, with the Dimbulah shed already preventing two suicides and a murder, through their inclusive environment and support for one another. Several dignitaries took their place in the crowd, which included: Graeme Curnow (CEO Qld Men’s Sheds), Member for Dalrymple Shane Knuth, Mareeba Shire councillor ‘Nipper’ Brown, along with Mayor Tom Gilmore, who officially opened the building. Dimbulah Shed president Dean Thomas said: “This has come about by a lot of hard work from a few people; and in particular, some of the unemployed of the town who are working through Jobfind. “This has assisted us enormously in getting this beautiful shed.”
Tom Gilmore, Dean Thomas, Shane Knuth and Graeme Curnow reflect after the opening.

Who’s better off since 2008? FROM PAGE 1
After highlighting potential costs and pitfalls that residents of a new Mareeba Shire could face, the following statement reads: “They (the proponents within the Mareeba Shire) claim to have some of the best and most astute business people working for them and they’ll make sure de-amalgamation costs works for all Mareeba Shire ratepayers. “A key question that needs to be asked is: Who will really benefit from de-amalgamation?” This very question was put to several TRC ratepayers who were interviewed a fortnight ago and the word ‘Mareeba’ was at the forefront of their answers. But, in the entire document provided to ratepayers, the following passage is arguably the most prophetic of all. “(The) TRC is also much more transparent in the way it operates, when compared to previous shires.
“We have taken a truly regional approach to ensure key work is prioritised according to need, planning schemes are clearer, community needs are understood through extensive consultation and policies and regulations are standardised so everyone is treated fairly and consistently.” Over the page, it concludes with: “We can achieve far more working together as a united council, than we will ever achieve as two smaller councils. Let’s work hard together.” For those who have attended any TRC meeting since 2012, you would be well aware the only thing ‘united’ within the meetings are the walls which hold the boardroom together. Factional voting, personality clashes and a routine need of the Mayor’s casting vote have effectively diluted any serious attempts for meaningful collaboration between all councillors. Below are a series of graphs, which indicate certain predictions prior to de-amalgamation; along with, how they have currently fared:

Ambulance officer honoured
COOKTOWN-based ambulance officer Ron Beckett was formally recognised yesterday for his efforts in action. Mr Beckett, who assisted those impacted
by last year’s helicopter crash on Mt Cook by providing onsite first aid – was actually a passenger on board. Two other passengers (Mayor Peter Scott and John La Cava) were trapped in the wreckage for some time, before Mr Beckett was able to assist. Mayor Scott said: “Ron’s abilities were really highlighted during the incident. “He immediately took control of the situation, providing critical patient care and coordinating the recovery effort from the top of the mountain. “There is no more worthy recipient of a Distinguished Service Medal,” he added. “Ron’s professionalism and dedication to the job are outstanding.”

The Mareeba Shire Council accepted and acknowledged a petition from local ratepayers on exploring the options on recycling within the shire. MSC has decided to seek expressions of interest from residents for the provision of a voluntary fee for a kerbside recycling service. The service would be based around
the existing kerbside waste collection service routes and would attract a specific fee for the service. “This is a major step forward and one Phone John on 0427 114 217 which Council has been working on now Mareeba Turf Club will have a Community Liquor for some time,” Mayor Gilmore said. Katter hopping mad over hat production By Justin Fris KATTER’S Australia Party Leader and Federal Member for Kennedy Bob Katter is in many ways, the face of Far North Queensland. His Akubra hat has become an institution; but sadly, the production of Australian Akubra hats has shifted almost entirely out of Australia. After being informed about Akubra’s decision to source imported rabbit skins, rather than Australian ones, Mr Katter said: “We’re going to be a bunch of bunnies if we keep voting for people that are enforcing this paradigm upon us where we buy everything from overseas. “That is actually what is happening in Australia – the high value of the dollar, interest rates 1000 per cent higher than the rest of the world; then everything is going to be brought in from overseas. “We are having discussions with Akubra and I’ve made it quite clear to them, that of course you can get some rabbit fur in Australia. “Akubra are saying they can’t find them in Australia. Well if you can’t find them in Australia, I’ll eat my hat. “Rabbits are one of the worst things that ever happened in the Australian environment. They are

extremely destructive and creators of erosion. So we want them taken out and used for hats.” Mr Katter added that he had great respect for the Akubra brand – but reaffirmed his passion for them to reconsider their Australian operations. “Akubra is one of the great Australian icons, out there with vegemite, which I don’t eat any more - I now eat Ozemite from Dick Smith. There is a message there from Akubra. “If I switched over from vegemite to Dick Smith’s Ozemite, then the same fate might well await one of the great icons of Australia – Akubra.” A day later while in Mareeba, Mr Katter lamented the increased number of Australian institutions which had moved their production overseas; with quality of the products often declining. The Express will be completing further investigations on the matter in coming weeks and determine what changes can be implemented to potentially increase Australian product involvement.

BAVARIA... a world full of amazing experiences
“I can’t believe they only speak German here!” – was Glenn’s remark on day 5 of our arrival into Germany which was going to be our home for 3 years. I think he was a bit shell shocked.
You see, he thought he had mastered the language after religiously watching “Inspector Rex” for 12 months in preparation of our “Continent Change”.
Shoes??? Now that’s another story, our son Rex (4) and daughter Lilykay (6) were used to running around with no shoes. So when we moved half way round the globe to a small Alpine village in Bavaria, they could not get their head around having to wear shoes. Our neighbours would often spot them running around in the snow in bare feet. The interesting thing about this is they never complained about being cold! The locals thought and told us much later that we Aussies were very strange creatures.
So there we were, the crazy Australian family that had turned up in the sleepy village of Staudach. The 3 years showered us with the most amazing experiences and we made many everlasting friendships.
We saw Europe through the eyes of a local and we have brought our experiences back to share with you.
For anybody planning on a Europe trip – do yourself a favour and spend a week in our second home. You will not be disappointed. Come along to our information night and I will show you a few highlights of one of the most incredible places on our planet.
SAVE UP TO $500
Per Couple on Selected Tours
If you’ve been thinking about a European River cruise or enjoying a carefully thought out tour of Canada Alaska or USA, do yourself a favour and come along to our information night on the 3rd of August.
We will have the travel expert here from Scenic Tours who give a special presentation on their magnificent tours that they will be running next year. Uli from Travel Experience.com.au will also be giving a short presentation on her 3 years in Bavaria and she recommends that anybody wanting a totally unique European experience should consider spending a week off the tourist trail in the magical alpine regions of Southern Germany.
Travel Experience.com.au is the only travel company in Australia that has packages on
offer to this region rich in culture, scenery and history. The packages suit all travellers from families to honeymooners , backpackers , adventure seekers and singles. Uli made many connections with the locals and can put together individual packages to cater for all sorts of interests.
With over 300 people that have already visited the area , Travel Experience.com.au know that they can’t go wrong as each and every person declared that the Region was the highlight of their European Holiday. Travel Experience.com.au would love to see you on the night and would appreciate early Rsvp’s and don’t forget that great savings can be made if you make it along.
INFORMATION SESSIONS At Scenic, we celebrate the art of wonder through travel, and we invite you to find out how. – Allow us to give you a glimpse of some of the magical places that we take you to, and the incredible discoveries you’ll make along the way. The LAND $9.8m to go towards future prevention of Panama disease THE Palaszczuk Government has committed $9.8 million towards future prevention of Panama Tropical Race 4 outbreaks in the Far North. State Agricultural Minister Bill Byrne said the amount had been secured in the upcoming budget, which was released on Tuesday. Minister Byrne said: “Panama disease Tropical Race 4 is recognised as the most serious biosecurity threat to the banana industry in Australia and its impact has been devastating worldwide. “The banana industry contributes significantly to the Far North Queensland economy and employment in the region, and is strongly linked with backpacker tourism. “This Budget investment will not only help to protect banana farms in the region, but will assist in managing the long term social and economic impacts of the outbreak across North Queensland. “The funding will provide for continual surveillance and tracing to determine the extent of the outbreak, activities to contain and prevent the spread of the disease, and destruction of any infected plants. “The $9.8 million to be invested this coming financial year is in addition to in excess of $4 million the Palaszczuk Government has spent fighting the disease since it was detected in early March. “The Palaszczuk Government’s investment is vital as accessing nationally cost-shared funding under the ‘Emergency Plant Pest Response Deed’ was not an option because eradicating the disease is not technically feasible. “I want to assure banana growers, all those involved in the industry and people who live in those communities whose livelihoods are intertwined with the banana trade, that the Palaszczuk Government will stand with them every step of the way.“
Knuth prepares for sugar address MEMBER for Dalrymple Shane Knuth is preparing to put forward his Sugar Industry amendment act to a panel of officials from the Parliamentary Agriculture Resource and Environment Committee this week. Mr Knuth – who has a proven track record in representing the sugar industry – said his plan is all about ensuring long-term viability of the industry. “This bill does not re-regulate the industry despite the aspersions by other parties, it simply gives a real choice in marketing,” Mr Knuth said. “We are about achieving two outcomes. “Creating a viable industry for cane growers and mill owners by giving cane growers a choice about who markets their
sugar, and providing a dispute settlement process through commercial arbitration only when necessary. “Canegrowers, mills and community groups must be part of this conversation so we can be sure we are getting the proposed legislation right, and ultimately the best outcome for Queensland,” Mr Knuth said. “I look upon the other parties to restrain themselves for the sake of this industry and
avoid leading this issue into any style of political debate.” “The truth is neither of the major parties took a real interest in the sugar industry while in government, I can only hope they now step up and contribute.” Mr Knuth said he had been working with several stakeholders within the sugar industry on the matter, along with fellow Katter’s Australia Party constituents.
Catchment progression takes flight

son why the Barron Catchment Care came into existence was because a bureaucrat in Brisbane said that the Barron River was going to be the sacrificial river of the north.” Mr Down explained that through considerable concern by supporters of the river, many different steps were taken to improve its overall health and viability. The sheer size of the catchment is vast; therefore it is divided into three separate zones: upper, central and lower. Another primary objective of the GCP is to ensure successful revegetation along the banks of the river. Currently in its 15th (of 50) year of the overall plan, members of the BRCC rely on the support of stakeholders to aid their progression. Two of these organisations include Cairns Airport and the Mareeba Shire Council, who were both represented healthily at the event, with partnerships expected to continue.

EXPRESS sPORT Bulls feast on freshly caught Marlin By Justin Fris
THE Mareeba United Football Club took another massive stride towards the minor premiership, with a clinical 5-0 victory over the Marlin Coast Rangers on Sunday afternoon at Borzi Park. It was a vintage display from the hosts, who controlled the midfield battles throughout and provided a hatful of quality chances. For the cellar dweller Rangers – it was yet another disappointing afternoon – who were far too hesitant going forward; generating only one shot on target for the entire match. Contending with five or six defenders at any given time early on, the home side took the lead on six minutes through David Ruiz. A wonderfully telegraphed cross looped lovingly into his path on the edge of the 18 yard box, with Ruiz delicately placing his finish past an outstretched Chris Couesnon in the Rangers goal. The visitors would have their only notable attempt on goal in the 13th minute, when a surging Tommy Meath could have made Bulls keeper Julian Madrid pay for his lack of positioning. Meath was wayward in his effort however, with a subsequent follow up from Alex Reith failing to test Madrid. When the Rangers did enter their attacking half, they were relying on the long ball into space; which was routinely dealt with by a compact home defence. This defensive unit included club legend Victor Madrid, who came out of retirement to fill in for his old club, due to a few players being unavailable for selection. Once in control of the ball, Bulls midfielders very rarely relinquished possession and routinely earmarked their forwards in acres of space along the flanks. Home
supporters headed into the half time interval a lot more relaxed, once Ruiz was able to add his second of the afternoon on 40 minutes. The goal was a result of three consecutive chances, with Leonardo Cisterni in the thick of the action throughout the build up of each move. It was David Ruiz’s brother, Paul, who had the ball on a string in the second half, engaging in a intruiging battle with Couesnon. Ruiz had no fewer than four excellent opportunities to score during this period – but was either denied by brilliant goalkeeping or by slightly mistiming his shot. Livewire Anthony Mete had no such hassles with finding the net, snaring a tidy brace in the space of five minutes; his cheeky chip definitely making the highlights reel. Icing on the sweet victory was secured five minutes from time, with Robert Pendenza coolly slotting his spot kick; with a special celebration in regard to his impending fatherhood. MUFC coach Alex Srhoj said: “Even in these games when we are in control, we need the boys to do those one and two percenters. “That’s the difference in a grand final; the difference between winning and losing. And that’s probably my biggest frustration at the moment.” Srhoj said this Saturday’s fixture against Leichhardt in both premier and reserve grades are imperative in a bid to secure top spot on the final day. “It’s another step forward,” he said. “We’d love to go into the bye still being seven to ten points ahead of Stratford.” The Bulls will play Leichhardt this Saturday evening at Borzi Park, with kick off at 7.30pm. Games start at 1.50pm this Saturday.
Myrteza returns from Australian Junior Championships By Justin Fris
THE U/16 Queensland North female team performed admirably during the recent Australian Junior Championships in Tasmania. Regularly pitted against metro and international opposition with vastly greater recruiting pools, the girls were competitive in every match. One of the staples within the roster was Mareeba’s own Sarrah Myrteza (pictured centre), who played a major role in the tournament. The ladies began their campaign against ACT Metro, where they suffered a heartbreaking 54-53 defeat.
This was quickly forgotten, as the girls then achieved one of the upsets of the tournament, thrashing a powerful NSW Metro, 63-45. Consecutive defeats against SA Metro and Vic Country followed, but the girls were anything but disheartened from these performances. Wins against WA Metro and the Northern Territory set up an intriguing quarter final matchup against Vic Metro, however the Vics had too much in the tank on the day. The girls wound up their campaign with a thrilling contest against New Zealand, before signing off with a comprehensive victory over the ACT.
Roosters’ injury list continues to rise By Justin Fris
BROTHERS Innisfail continued their claim for a spot in the 2015 Cairns District Rugby League finals, after a comfortable 42-4 win over the Atherton Roosters last Saturday night on the south coast. Currently decimated with injuries throughout all grades, the visitors struggled to keep up with an improving Leprechauns outfit. Roosters senior official Darryl Day said coach Jamie Blain was satisfied with the performance, considering the amount of selection shuffling before the match. This Saturday’s home fixture against Brothers Cairns will be held in Ravenshoe – an originally planned fixture, which will take on a whole new meaning. The club has decided that all proceeds on the evening will go towards the Ravenshoe JRLC, with a free bus service from Atherton being organised for supporters. Contact the club for bookings and times. In light of recent tragedy, the match will provide an opportunity for the Tablelands to stand shoulder to shoulder and reaffirm support to those impacted.
Waylon Joseph makes a break through the defence.

‘Tennis with Touch’ By Justin Fris
ALAN Lane is a man who has experienced tennis at the highest level; gracing the grass courts of Wimbledon five times. But almost as impressive, is his unique ability to provide education and instruction through a dedicated coaching regime, which can be understood regardless of skill-level. Lane’s latest instalment of coaching literature is dubbed ‘Tennis with Touch’, which focuses on the tactical side of tennis. “I’ve broken them down into five fundamental tactics,” he said. “Everything else being equal, the player that follows these tactics will win every single time. “The five tactics and they are in order of
priority are: consistency, depth, placement, power and finesse. “If a player has consistency only, for example - and another player has the remainder and can serve 250 km/hr, but doesn’t have consistency – they lose.” Lane’s coaching education has been fundamentally ingrained from his experiences on the Grand Slam circuit, along with a solid coaching stint in the US. Upon reflecting on his experiences at Wimbledon, Lane said: “It’s so well organised. People will queue in line and there will be no arguments. “As a player, they send a car to pick you up and you get driven in.” Once his career finished, Lane began a
Junior players from the Mareeba United Football Club travelled to Townsville during the school holidays to take part in the annual Filippo Mele Carnival. Representing FNQ Football, the juniors were part of teams from across the region, aged from under 10’s to under 12’s. After five full days of football the Cairns Green Under 12’s team took our the Filippo Mele Carnival – undefeated the entire tournament, which included teams from all over North Queesland.
Cairns Green Under 12’s team stared several Mareeba Bulls junior players and was coached and managed by Mareeba locals, Luch Avolio and Genio Quintieri.

coaching tenure which has included lengthy stints in Adelaide, New York City and now right here in FNQ. “I was the first Australian coach in Westchester County (of New York City) ever,” he said. I had it lucky; I could put a two line ad in a local newspaper and get 200 requests. “Consequently, there was heaps of work. Now for my coaching career, it was probably the best thing I ever did, because I had so much tennis; so many lessons, so many different people. “Then of course, the Americans were totally different to the Australians in those days for sure (in terms of tactics and mindset).” To learn more about Lane’s literature and insight on tennis, visit www.perfectlesson.com
