Think before you drink

TABLELANDS motorists are being urged to think of the potentially fatal consequences before they even consider drink driving.

Police nabbed three drink drivers in the region

last week, the worst being a Koah man who allegedly recorded a blood alcohol reading of 0.166 per cent – more than three times the legal limit - after his vehicle was stopped in Kuranda last Thursday night.

The 20-year-old was allegedly found asleep in

his car, which was still running but had stopped in the middle of Oak Forest Road.

The man had his registration plates seized for seven days and is expected to appear in the Mareeba Magistrates Court at a later date.

The latest incidents come after four unli-

censed drivers were caught separately driving the same car on New Year’s Eve. Three of those drivers recorded blood alcohol readings over the legal limit.

Fish still biting despite off-season ANGLERS wanting to hit Lake Tinaroo for some sport fishing may still be in luck despite the dam’s low water level.

Tinaroo Barra Sportfishing owner-operator Ian Kucurs said barramundi were still biting during the traditional closed fishing season.

“I can’t say it’s anything special with the rain coming in, but there’s still fish there to be caught,” he said.

Between November 1 and February 1, recreational fishers are only allowed to catch and release fish in Tinaroo with the exception of taking one barramundi each that is more than 120cm long.

Cairns teenager Eethan Hastie snagged a whopper barra at the dam late last year, coming in at 125cm long.

but larger females proved more elusive.

Early mornings and late afternoons continue to be the best times to fish, with last week’s full moon generating more activity in the water.

While the past week had been quiet, Mr Kucurs said he had been inundated with charter requests between September and November.

“Before Christmas was crazy,” he said.

STEVEN Johnston’s tender love and care of his mango orchid is all it took to produce the biggest entry into the KP Mango Competition yet.

Coming in at a hefty 1.074kg, Mr Johnston said he had being eyeing off the sizeable mango for the past three weeks after noticing its impressive size on the tree.

“I had two in mind so I kept an eye on them and eventually I thought well I better pick them before the parrots eat them,” he said.

“The second one I picked was only about 10g or 12g lighter.”

The Biboohra man started watering his 200-tree orchid in August using no fertilisers or sprays.

“I watered the trees once a week since then until that beautiful rain came and I didn’t have to,” Mr Johnston said.

“The trees are reasonably small and it’s easy to see the mangoes hanging low and you can just keep an eye on them.”

Mr Johnston said if he won the competition, he would treat his family

to a day at the beach with a “big, flash lunch”.

Held annually by The Express, Total Food Network and Mareeba District Fruit and Vegetable Grower’s Association (MDFVGA), the competition is open to all Tablelands farmers and backyard growers in a bid to see who can grow the region’s heaviest Kensington Pride mango.

All mangoes entered must be photographed on electronic scales, clearly displaying its weight and viewed by a member of The Express team or MDFVGA president Joe Moro.

Mangoes must not be tampered with in any way.

Entries close on January 31 with the winner to be announced at the end of the harvest season.

First place will win $500, second $300 and third $200.

All mangoes will be retained by The Express managing editor Carl Portella for verification and consumption.

Kindy gets a win against bats A LOCAL kindergarten has had a win as Mareeba Shire Council begins to disperse a problem bat colony from today.

The colony at Basalt Gully has been a growing and constant menace for Mareeba Community Kindergarten since April last year, causing unwanted noise, smell and a possible health risk to children.

Council will start dispersing the spectacled flying foxes from trees in the gully, which is part of council reserve land on the corner of Stewart and Rankin streets using Bird Frite cartridges to scare them off.

The dispersal activities could last until January 27, weather permitting.

The kindergarten started a paper petition around October last year, urging the State Government to take action against the bats.

It attracted more than 100 signatures from supporters, parents and local businesses.

That was followed by an online petition a

few weeks later asking council to take action, but a spokesman said at the time there was little they could do as the issue was not “within our jurisdiction”.

The online petition was subsequently updated to lobby State Environment Minister Steven Miles to authorise removal of the bats.

Council itself can only operate within strict guidelines set by the State Department of Environment and Heritage Protection’s Code of Practice, and could not disperse the colony until its young flying foxes were old enough to fly independently. Council will use four workers to start dispersing the colony, with the first attempt made at 4:30am this morning.

“We need to start this early to prevent the flying foxes from settling into the trees and they usually start returning to roost around dawn,” said Mareeba mayor Tom Gilmore.

“Council will continue to monitor the area during this phase to ensure the colony has not

Kindergarten committee president Kylie Patroney was delighted by the “fantastic news”.

“It will make the kindy environment much more pleasant with the noise and smell gone,” she said. “Parents will no longer have to worry about the health risks associated with them.”

Mrs Patroney previously told The Express she feared enrolments could start dropping unless the bats were moved on. About 40 children were enrolled at the kindergarten last year.

The spectacled flying fox is officially listed as a vulnerable species, with infected bats able to give humans the life-threatening Australian Bat Lyssavirus (ABL) by scratching or biting.

While not reported in flying foxes specifically, infected bird or bat droppings have been known to carry another disease, Histoplasmosis – an airbone, environmental fungus which can cause respiratory illness or even death.

Police plea to drink drivers FROM Page 1 That added to a whopping 27 drink drivers and 15 drug drivers caught by police during the week before and the week after Christmas.

Mareeba Road Policing Unit officer in charge Sergeant John Ridgway said the risk of drink or drug driving was not worth it.

“At the end of the day, your decision to get behind the wheel whilst you’re intoxicated by liquor or drugs will have far reaching effects, not only on you but also on other motorists and family,” he said.

“We’re just trying to make sure there’s no

further carnage on the road.”

While most motorists behaved themselves, Sgt Ridgway said the holiday season typically saw a spike in the number of drink and drug driving incidents on Tablelands roads.

“Unfortunately, some of the people we’re getting are just over the legal limit of 0.05 but we’re also getting a lot of high readings and that’s the worrying trend,” he said.

“It’s not just people who have misjudged by a small amount, we’re talking about people who are grossly intoxicated.

“We want to make sure the roads are safe and make sure we get people who are impaired

off the road.”

Sgt Ridgway said drink and drug drivers were more likely to fall asleep behind the wheel, engage in risky driving behaviour on the road and speed, putting their own life and that of other motorists at risk.

Sgt Ridgway said the message to motorists going out for a drink was simple.

“People need to plan ahead,” he said.

“If they’re going to be attending a party of some description…organise a designated driver, have money for a taxi or organise accommodation wherever the party is.”

THE Tablelands will continue to receive a good dose of rain this week as the wet season makes its mark.

Cairns Weather Bureau duty forecaster Andrew Cearns said while the region would not cop as big a drenching as last week, afternoon showers and storms were still on the cards.

“We’ve had very unstable and humid conditions with the monsoon trough in the area which was fairly strong up until about last Monday or Tuesday,” he said.

“After that it’s pretty much eased off and we’ve got fairly moist north-easterly winds coming on to the coast with hot and humid conditions, which leads to afternoon showers and storms.”

Mr Cearns said the current weather conditions were characteristic of a typical Far North wet season, with patches of both light and heavy downpours.

“In a way, we’re sort of in a bit of a break for this week with the very heavy

activity,” he said.

“But even in that break, with the moisture that’s left around, we’ll still see the odd heavier shower and storm which means more hit and miss activity where there might be more heavier falls.”

Temperature wise, Mr Cearns said high heat and humidity would continue on the Tablelands despite a change in wind direction.

“Winds will swing around to maybe a more southeasterly direction during the middle of this week but even with that, it’ll still be fairly humid,” he said.

“It might bring the temperatures down a bit but only a degree or so.”

The spate of wet weather comes after Tolga farmer Alfonso Muoio died when he fell off a rail bridge and was swept away in floodwaters at Spring Creek on January 4.

It is not known exactly how Mr Muoio died – whether he drowned or was struck by an object - but police will prepare a report for the coroner.

At the time of going to print, the water level at Tinaroo Dam was 38.4 per cent, up on a worrying 33 per cent capacity which the dam hit on December 18.

BIG HAUL: The Tablelands supplied more than 1.04 million tonnes to both the Mossman and Tableland mills during last year’s harvest season.

THE Tablelands has done its part in contributing to a state-wide sugar harvest worth a whopping $2 billion.

Farming body Canegrowers estimated that with more than 34 million tonnes of sugarcane crushed over the harvest season, it will be turned into at least 4.3 million tonnes of raw sugar worth around $2 billion when sold on the export and domestic markets.

Out of those 34 million tonnes of cane, the Tablelands supplied more than 1.04 million tonnes to both the Mossman and Tableland mills during last year’s harvest season, which traditionally runs from the end of May through to November.

That figure was down on 2015’s 1.05 million tonnes, with the reduction blamed predominantly on loss of cane area to bananas and avocadoes.

mills finished crushing last November, Canegrowers chairman Paul Schembri said six of the state’s growing regions worked up to and past the festive season.

Wet weather in the usually dry winter months at the start of the crush in some key north Queensland areas put the season behind schedule early.

The rain also meant the crop kept growing, increasing the estimated tonnage needing to be harvested.

For instance, the Tully mill processed a record 2.9 million tonnes but in a number of districts, not all of the crop could be cut before the summer rains set in.

About half a million tonnes of cane has been left behind, because of weather and milling problems, which will stand over until the 2017 crush begins.

ing encouraged to have their say on the future strategic direction of Sugar Research Australia (SRA) at a special regional forum later this month in Gordonvale.

SRA is in the process of developing a new five-year strategic plan, which will guide the future direction of the group’s investment in research, development and adoption activities for the Australian sugarcane industry.

It comes after a flying visit to Mossman and Mareeba by SRA representatives last August, which discussed the group’s latest projects in sugar cane research and development with farmers.

The regional forum will be held on January 30 at the Mulgrave Rambler tourist train at Gordon St, Gordonvale from 8:30am to 10:30am.

TABLELANDERS wanting to give back to their local community are being urged to sign up with their local State Emergency Service (SES) group.

The all-volunteer organisation is putting the call out for new members in a variety of roles covering everything from administration to search and rescue.

“We end up with people from many different walks of life that do bring skills with them, however the skills required for our operations are all trained in-house,” said SES Western Area controller Sean McGuinness.

“We’re able to offer that training to them to make sure they are skilled to respond after a storm or flood event.”

There is no one physical or aptitude requirement to join the SES, with volunteer candidates individually assessed on their suitability depending on what role they would like to perform.

“Quite often we make it into the media for searches or rescues, however there are a lot of support roles that are associated with operations that anybody could put their hand up for,” Mr McGuinness said.

“Administration, communications and logistics are a big part of it, making sure we can get our members from A to B. Welfare is another big part of it.”

Mr McGuinness said the isolation of the Tablelands meant SES volunteers were critical in times of natural disasters such as flooding, cyclones and storm damage.

“With a growing population on the Tablelands, being trained and ready to respond in an activation or natural event is very important for the community,” he said.

“We definitely could also use more people to help out

Nethery is also in the running for the Australasian Performing Right Association Australasian Mechanical Copyright Owners Society/Tamworth Songwriters Association New Song Writer of the Year Award for her hit song “Your Hand Slips Into Mine”.

A SMATTERING of Mareeba youngsters will take on Australia’s best futsal sides from tomorrow in the National Futsal Championships.

12 local players will be represented in five of the Cairns-based FNQ Futsal teams to contest the championships in Adelaide from Thursday until this Sunday.

U13 Boys and Men’s coach, Mareeba’s Ronnie Leporati, said he was impressed by the level of local talent represented in the teams.

“The futsal talent up here is really good, considering they’ve got to go to Cairns to play it,” he said.

“We have a lot of Mareeba boys who go down there every week to play in the local Cairns comp.

“The interest is there.”

Annual cup washed out

Atherton batsman Gerard Fox.

Past players, supporters and life members turned out to cheer the boys on in the annual Bridgeman-Maher Cup match held at Loder Park, Atherton, on Saturday between Atherton and Norths.

Norths won the toss, considered the conditions and sent Atherton in to bat. Openers Gerard Fox and Paul Nasser got off to a reasonable start with Nasser going on to top score with 74 runs off 112 balls in muggy conditions.

Pete Sceresini kicked in with 19, Gerard Fox 14 and Dan Parnell 14.

Atherton posted 6-153 off their 40 overs.

Unfortunately rain set in during the change of innings and Norths were denied the opportunity to reply.

Paul Nasser put in a man-of-the-match performance and is now Atherton’s leading run scorer for the season to date.

The draw is just enough to get Atherton into the top four, in a tight race for semi-final positions with Rovers, Mulgrave and Norths in front.

Atherton’s next home game is a two-day match against United on Febuary on 11 and 18.

Ladies set for big bash

ALMOST 30 Mareeba women have signed up for an inaugural Ladies T20 cricket competition, the first of its kind in the Far North.

To be known as the “Lacy Bra Cup”, the competition hopes to feature four teams consisting of 10 players each and will be run over four weekends in February.

Cup founder and organiser Trisha Spry said she wanted to give local women the chance to play the game she grew up with when her family owned the town’s old indoor cricket centre.

“We’ve tried to promote it as a fun thing for mums to do and make it a bit of a family atmosphere,” she said.

“We’re going to have a jumping castle so the kids are entertained here as well.”

A Mareeba Cricket Club committee member, Mrs Spry said the club had given her its full backing as Cricket Australia rolls out a nationwide push to get more women in to the sport.

“The club was more than willing to provide the amenities and venue to play at,” she said.

“Cricket Australia is… also helping us with supplying some gear as well.”

The team who has accumulated the most points after

four weekends will be the winner, with the possibility of also holding a grand final playoff.

Mrs Spry said about six women who have signed up had never played the game before and couldn’t wait to get stuck in.

“We’re still chasing about 10 more players, but if we get more than that then we will cater for that as well,” she said.

“It’s not so much about the serious side of cricket but having more of a backyard cricket feel so it’s a bit more enjoyable, fun and a nice way to spend your Sunday.”

Mrs Spry said there was potential for a future Ladies T20 competition featuring other towns, with interest already growing in Atherton.

The game itself will be a modified form of T20, incorporating some indoor cricket rules to increase player participation on match day.

Ladies who would like to sign up can pick up a nomination form at Ray White Rural Mareeba’s Byrnes St office or Google “Senior cricket registration Mareeba” and follow the links.

The competition kicks off on February 12 at Firth Park, opposite Mareeba Leagues Club.

Roosters prepare to mark 100 years ESTABLISHED in 1918 and playing their 99th season this year, the Atherton Senior Roosters are in party mode as the club builds towards their 100-year celebration in 2018.

Part of the celebration will be a 100-year book, which is presently being prepared by rugby league identity Martin Grandelis.

Grandelis wants to detail the club’s full history in the publication and highlight many of the characters and happenings that have helped shape the club since 1918. International winger Warren Orr is one of many who hold a special place at the Roosters after joining the club for a three-year stint in 1970.

Many say he learnt his trade at Atherton before being lured to Wests in Brisbane in 1973, which also kick started his Queensland and Australian representative career.

In 1974, he was selected to play two tests for Australia against Great Britain, scoring a try in front of 35,000 fans at Brisbane’s Lang Park. After switching to Wynnum Manly in 1975, an unlucky run of injuries forced his

retirement from the game in 1976.

While at Atherton, Orr played in the Roosters’ 1971 premiership side who defeated Mareeba Wests 12-8 in the grand final.

It was the Roosters first senior premiership win in 49 years and other team members included John Godfrey, Brian Allia, Keith McGuffie, Graham Rockley, Denis Penshorn, Alan Poggioli, Des Godfrey, Keith Gould, Kev Shaw, Steve Hamilton, Dave Power (coach), John Neary, Rod Small, Elio Cantoni and Arthur Busato. Many still live on the Tablelands and remain involved with the club.

Grandelis currently lives in Brisbane but will be visiting the area several times this year.

Gator Hughes out for redemption IF there’s anyone who knows what it’s like to ride the highs and lows of a local footy club, Tom Hughes would be it.

The veteran A-grade centre has been there for the club’s finals charges, just as he’s taken the field time and time again in more recent years as the Gladiators faced a string of disappointing seasons.

But the 27-year-old said he was more hungry than ever for success.

“It’s been a few tough years at the club, we’ve been down towards the bottom of the ladder and we’ve got a couple new faces this year so there’s a good mixture of new and old,” he said.

“We definitely want to make the finals, especially with the sort of recruitment drive we’ve done for this season.

“It might take us a few games to gel together but towards the back end of the season I reckon we’ll start to come home strong and jump into the top five.”

After a horror run with injuries last year, Hughes, a former team captain, has been leading the pack at training, impressing coach Tye Ingebrigtsen with his fitness

and tenacity.

“I’ve been playing for a few years now but this has been one of the toughest pre-season’s so far,” Hughes said.

“There’s been a lot of game-simulation fitness, which has been really enjoyable.”

Hughes, who started with the club’s Under 18s side about a decade ago, said he appreciated Ingebrigtsen’s approach to the playing group.

“Tye knows the line between when you can muck around and when you’ve got to get into it,” he said.

“Everyone’s been putting in the hard yards, which is good to see. It’s been a really tough pre-season so far and we’ve got a long way to go.”

Able to play both on the wing and in the centre, Hughes’ versatility should give Ingebrigtsen options on the field.

“Whatever will suit the team at the time, I don’t mind doing,” Hughes said.

“It’ll be good just to be out there and get on the paddock after having a disruptive year.”
