Remembering Private Ben

PRIVATE Benjamin Adam Chuck was the perfect soldier. Loyal to his mates, battle hardened and motivated to be the best. But here, on the banks of the Einasleigh River (pictured), you see a different side to the Yungaburra man as he stares wistfully into the distance. More than six years after Pvt Chuck tragically lost his life in Afghanistan, US-based artist Jason Swain has made it his personal mission to paint every one of Australia’s 41 fallen servicemen in a touching tribute to their families. $10m road deal By Michael Serenc

A SPAT between the Federal and State Governments over road funding appears over after more than $10 million was announced to seal parts of two critical roads in the region. Federal Infrastructure minister Darren Chester announced last Tuesday $5.97 million to seal parts of the Burke Developmental Rd (BDR) from Chillagoe to Almaden, and $4.76 million to seal Ootann Rd between Almaden and Gunawarra along the Kennedy Highway.

The move follows a front page story by The Express two weeks ago, which revealed a blame game had started over funding an unsealed 14km stretch of the BDR between Chillagoe and Almaden. Each road is split into two funding packages, the BDR being sealed in two stages worth $4.31 million and $1.66 million, while Ootann Rd will be sealed in stages costing $660,000 and $4.1 million. The funding announcement forms part of a wider $56 million package for Queensland roads under the Federal Government’s $100 million Northern Australia Beef Roads Program (BRP).

Mareeba Deputy Mayor Alan Pedersen was delighted by the announcement, crediting a strong lobbying effort by council, media and mining companies for the funding breakthrough. “It’s overdue. It’s good to see the Feds come to the party because it’s obvious the State didn’t have the money to do it,” he said. “It’s joint lobbying from a lot of quarters that’s managed to get the attention of the Federal Government and get some money spent in northern Australia.”

Scumbag act prompts warning from pensioner AN elderly Mareeba man who had his walking frame stolen while shopping has warned other pensioners to remain vigilant in town. William Crowther, 95, was helping a friend with her shopping at Coles in Mareeba Plaza on the morning of October 23 when he returned to his mobility scooter to find someone had nicked his walker. The grandfather-of-three said he was shocked by the brazen theft, which forced him to fork out $180 to buy a new one. “It’s a low act to steal it because I can’t walk very far without that support,” he said. “It’s completely heartless…I went back to Coles to report the theft and they said it was nothing to do with them, it was public property.” Mr Crowther said he would have taken his walker with him into Coles but instead was using a trolley that morning. He has since bought a lock for his new walker, determined to prevent another theft by would-be criminals. “I want to warn people who use walkers in case it happens to them,” he said. “Seek vigilance and be very careful, particularly in shopping centres.” Mr Crowther urged the thief to return his walker to him and promised there would be no action taken against them. He said if the walker was returned, he would donate it to charity. If you have information regarding the stolen walker, call William Crowther on 4092 7271.

ORGANISERS of Tablelands Relay for Life are jumping for joy after the fundraiser officially passed the $1 million mark since first launching in 2009. The annual event raised more than $70,000 earlier this month for Cancer Council Queensland when 280 people walked or ran their way around Davies Park in an 18 hour marathon. Tablelands Relay For Life chairman Gavin Johnson was thrilled with both this year’s fundraising result and the $1 million milestone. “This has been a great achievement for the community,” he said. “To be able to raise more than $1 million for cancer research and support programs is something we can all be

proud of. “It was a great weekend at Relay For Life and we look forward to relaying again in 2017.” 1400 people are diagnosed with cancer and 460 people die from the disease each year in the Far North. Cancer Council Queensland spokeswoman Katie Clift thanked participants for their dedication and overwhelming generosity over the past eight years. “We want to commend the efforts of all those who have helped reach this incredible milestone – the teams, organisers, committee members and supporters,” she said. “It was wonderful to see so many supporters at Relay this year, walking

The town of Chillagoe will finally have a sealed road all the way through from Almaden after a funding announcement by the Federal Government.

Chillagoe road finally gets sealed FROM Page 1 The BDR will field more heavy traffic from January next year when Auctus Resources restarts operations at the Mungana and King Vol mine sites. Currently, about 179 vehicles use the BDR between Alamaden and Chillagoe every day, 20 per cent of which are heavy vehicles. Mr Chester also noted the role Consolidated Pastoral Company played in helping the government to “identify priority projects” for the BDR. Mareeba Mayor Tom Gilmore said the funding win was more than just about sealing the road, but unlocking the region’s potential with cattle, tourism, and agriculture all set to benefit. “It’s significant in so far as it’s recognition that those two roads are important parts of the road network for industry, which includes cattle,” he said. “But it spins off to other industries like tourism and more importantly, the fruit and veg-

etable industry, which ultimately will be using Ootann Rd to go to southern markets.” But Cr Pedersen said the funding fight was not over, with Rifle Creek Bridge along the Mulligan Highway and Eureka Creek Bridge between Dimbulah and Petford in desperate need of widening to accommodate heavier transport trucks. The long-planned northern bypass from Mareeba-Dimbulah Rd to the Mulligan Highway is also in need of dollars. “We’ve still got big issues with bridges where we can’t get Type 2 Road Train access through,” he said. “Those bridges should be high on the priority list for State-controlled roads. We need those roads upgraded.” Queensland Main Roads Minister Mark Bailey welcomed the funding for the BDR and Ootann Rd, which his government submitted as priorities to the BRP in May. “Mareeba Shire Council also previously lodged a submission for Ootann Road under the Northern Australia Roads Programme

(NARP). This result is good news for Far North Queensland,” he said. “The Palaszczuk Government will provide a 20 per cent contribution of $1.48 million for progressive sealing on the Burke Developmental Road, which is a state-controlled road. “ Northern Australia Minister Matt Canavan said the road sealing would assist the beef industry in developing a reliable transport network across the Far North. “With the Tablelands and North Queensland being a beef powerhouse, these roads make a real difference,” he said. “More roads mean more cattle which means better business, lower costs and more money.” Senator Canavan said the BDR and Ootann Rd upgrades dovetailed well with the Peninsular Development Rd upgrade connecting Weipa to the Tablelands. “That will potentially have huge benefits long term for the beef industry, but also industrial developments given how good the port is at Weipa and how much investment is going into bauxite mining up that way,” he said.

By Michael Serenc A PHONE call out of the blue ignited an artist’s campaign to commemorate the lives of Australia’s 41 fallen Afghanistan servicemen through a series of touching portraits. US-based artist and former Sunshine Coast man Jason Swain has been painting individual portraits of every Australian soldier killed in Afghanistan, starting with fallen Yungaburra commando Private Ben Chuck, who lost his life in a helicopter crash in June 2010. Mr Swain, who has painted the likes of Steve Irwin, former US President Bill Clinton and current President Barack Obama, said a conversation with his sister at the start of 2012 gave him the idea to paint a series of portraits in tribute to fallen servicemen using photographs taken of them. “With the guys in Afghanistan… a lot of people have forgotten their sacrifices and this is a way of letting the families know we still recognise what they did,” he said. After making little headway with the Department of Defence, Mr Swain cold called Pvt Chuck’s mother Susan around the start of 2012 to ask if the Chuck family would like a portrait of their son. After agreeing, Susan was able to put Mr Swain in contact with other families through

a Defence liaison officer, ultimately starting what would become a four year journey paying tribute to the service and sacrifice of the fallen. That includes a painting of commando Mason Edwards, a decorated Afghanistan and East Timor veteran who was killed during a training accident in South Australia in 2009. Since delivering his first portrait to the Chuck family in May 2012, Mr Swain has gone on to paint another 30 portraits of fallen soldiers and is now raising funds to be able to finish the last 11 and complete his compassionate endeavour. “It’s been a pretty rewarding experience for me because not only are they Australians, they’ve made the ultimate sacrifice,” Mr Swain said. “The parents want me to see this through to the end and make sure I can paint all of the fellas.” Mr Swain met with Susan for the first time at Redland RSL in Brisbane last Tuesday, where he was presented with a bronze statue of a commando sniper as a token of appreciation for his efforts. “It was great to meet her, we hit it off straight away,” Mr Swain said. “It brought back memories of when Susan first got the portrait of Ben so it was a little bit emotional.

“It was a really warm response I got from her.” Susan said she was touched by Mr Swain’s portrait of her son. “I love it. It’s not Ben in uniform, it’s Ben out on the banks of the Einasleigh River when he, his father Gordon and I went out there camping just before his last deployment,” she said. “It just shows his amazing strength with his body. Because he had no equipment out there, he had to keep his strength up so he used to walk up and down along the bank of the river carrying these huge rocks.” Susan said it was “amazing” Mr Swain had taken it upon himself to paint the fallen. “He does it in his spare time, not seeking any reward whatsoever, just to honour them,” she said. Yungaburra is home to the Australian Afghanistan Avenue of Honour at Lake Tinaroo, which carries the names of each fallen soldier. Mr Swain said it cost between $350 and $400 to have each portrait framed and then sent to family members, thanking Brisbane businesses Artist Pura and Aaaha Karen’s Framing Gallery for framing each portrait at cost price. The Curves program was specifically designed to meet the health and fitness needs of women. Strength Training helps enhance and preserve your muscle mass, regardless of your age By building and maintaining muscle you increase your metabolic rate and burn more calories even when you are resting. For each kilogram of muscle you gain, the more energy you burn at rest. Strength Training can also improve blood circulation and balance which will allow you to perform everyday tasks with less effort and for longer periods of time. The percentage of fat on your body increases as you get older if you don’t do anything to replace the lean muscle you lose. Not many women are aware of this. Without Strength Training you will see gradual changes in body shape and you may start to notice small changes in your health – usually on the decline.

EXTENDED BY POPULAR DEMAND!

The Curves workout combines Strength Training, cardio activity and stretching to create lean muscle, raise your metabolism, burn more fat and tone your body. By getting stronger and increasing your flexibility, you are setting the stage for your healthier, more active future. Keep doing the things you love for longer!

Mareeba Council solid on financials

Mareeba Mayor Tom Gilmore is satisfied with the 2015/16 council financial report.

part of their de-amalgamation cash split. Unsurprisingly, 53 per cent of operating revenue came from rates, levies and charges, while 28 per cent came from grants, subsidies, contributions and donations. The biggest three operating expenses were transport infrastructure maintenance (31 per cent), waste disposal (12 per cent) and water (10 per cent). Operating expenditure topped $46.2 million for last financial year. Mareeba mayor Tom Gilmore was paid $104,718.42 plus superannuation in the last financial year and claimed just over $21,000 in travel costs through the use of his personal car. Former councillor Jenny Jensen had the next biggest travel expense claims at $5625 followed by Deputy Mayor Alan Pedersen with $5612.20. Cr Gilmore said the report was a credit to

MAREEBA Shire Council’s solid financial position has been validated after the release of its draft annual report. Council voted unanimously to adopt the report at a special meeting convened last Wednesday, which shows an operating surplus of $4.8 million and a total, or net, surplus of nearly $13 million for the 2015/16 financial year. Council is also waiting on a $2.8 million payout from Tablelands Regional Council as

all council staff for their work in the past financial year. “It’s a good document and reflective of where we are,” he said. “That report records, in good comprehensive detail, the position we’re in as opposed to where we’ve come from. “That lays the foundations for where we’re going to go. We’re well and truly on the front foot of planning for that.” Key projects currently being undertaken this financial year include the $16 million wastewater treatment plant and $18 million airport upgrade. Cr Gilmore’s sentiments were echoed by several councillors. “It’s a comprehensive report and I think it’s only positive for Mareeba Shire,” said Cr Nipper Brown. Cr Angela Toppin said the report “gave a good overview of what council had achieved”, while Cr Pedersen and Cr Kevin Davies also credited council staff for their work in achieving a solid financial position.

Council knocks back developer

TABLELANDS Regional Council has finally ended a stalemate over a controversial development application, voting against giving it a further extension. Council voted unanimously to reject a four year extension to create 26 group title lots and common property along Fletcher Rd, Yungaburra at last Thursday’s meeting, citing the fact it did not comply with the Sustainable Planning Act 2009. Councillors Anthony Ball and Bronwyn Voyce were both absent from the meeting.

SPECIALS AVAILABLaEy

The application was originally approved by council in March 2012 – against council officers’ recommendations at the time. The developer wanted an extension to September 2020, or at the very least 12 months, to complete construction, blaming “the length of time taken to decide the application and the economic effects of the global financial crisis”. The application lapsed in September. Council officers noted there had been “no subsequent applications for operational works” since the original development application had been

lodged, recommending council reject the developer’s extension. The development was approved under the old Eacham Shire Planning Scheme, despite officers noting it was “not consistent” with even that scheme and would also be “inconsistent” under the newly adopted TRC planning scheme. A separate extension request for a material change of use and reconfiguration of a lot into 23 residential lots in four stages and a balance lot in Yungaburra was also refused due to it not complying with the Sustainable Planning Act 2009.

Residents rage against development KURANDA residents appear set to dig in for a long fight over a proposed $640 million eco-resort at Myola after a fiery meeting last week. Mareeba Shire councillor Nipper Brown, CEO Peter Franks, Barron River MP Craig Crawford and representatives from the proposed KUR-World development fronted residents at a meeting organised by Kuranda Region Planning Group at Kuranda State College last Wednesday. The atmosphere was palpable as each group of representatives explained their role and position regarding KUR-World, which is currently going through the State Government’s Environmental Impact Statement (EIS) process overseen by independent Coordinator General Barry Broe. “It’s going to be a 12-month long process for us and over that 12 months we’re going to do a whole lot of baseline studies and identify all the potential impacts that this project could create on the land and in the community,” said KUR-World project and development manager Mark Lawson. Mr Lawson admitted at the meeting he and his team still “didn’t have all the answers” regarding the project, saying it was still in the early stages of the EIS process with the final size and scope still to be decided. Several residents who spoke up at the meeting, including Cheryl Tonkin and Lisa Serpa, were scathing of KUR-World’s consultation process so far and believed the development was not wanted in the area. “We’re all expected to wear the costs of this one way or another and yet you’re brazenly still going ahead with this as a fait accompli,” Ms Tonkin said to Mr Lawson. Mr Lawson replied there was no assumption by KURWorld that the development would be approved and they were continuing to work through the EIS process. Ms Serpa said she was “offended” by the develop-

Speaking to The Express, Mr Lawson acknowledged KUR-World could have done more to engage with the community earlier on, but said residents would be kept informed through every step of the EIS process. “We understand that the community engagement process with regards to this project in Kuranda is probably the most important part of the entire thing,” he said. THe 626ha development still has several hoops to jump through before it is either recommended for approval or rejected by the Coordinator-General. If eventually approved by the State Government and Mareeba Shire Council, KUR-World could feature a 3.5 and 5 star resort, 18 hole golf course, residential villa accommodation, education and business facilities and a health and a wellbeing centre. The entire development is expected to generate 545 jobs during construction and 600 jobs once operational. A start date for Stage 1 of KUR-World is pencilled in for June 2018 at the earliest.

and productive culture that minimises the risk to an employee’s mental health and wellbeing, it supports people with a mental health condition and it prevents discrimination.” Mrs Bestmann said depression was also a factor in the workplace and presented itself through various symptoms such as a feeling of being overwhelmed, guilt, a lack of confidence, miserableness or frustration. “If you think that a staff member has a problem, you can’t actually tell them, but you can certainly provide them with assistance.” Mrs Bestmann said statistics showed one in every five Australians had a mental health condition, making it at least probable there was one employee in every workplace affected by anxiety or depression. Mareeba Chamber of Commerce president Joe Moro said mental health was a significant issue for industries across Australia. “From a business point of view, we need to have a better understanding of this particular issue,” he said. Workplace health in spotlight MAREEBA business owners have been given an important insight into the cost of poor mental health in the workplace. Mental health advocate Margie Bestmann gave a passionate presentation at last Wednesday’s Mareeba Chamber of Commerce luncheon, imploring businesses to take steps to ensure their staff were happy, healthy and productive in the workplace. “Mental health conditions are not going away, statistics show they are in fact increasing in numbers,” she said. “When we talk about the symptoms of anxiety, it’s across four different areas: feelings, thoughts, behaviour and physical changes that happen in the body. “Likewise, stress can be experienced in all aspects of life and work is no exception.” According to a recent PricewaterhouseCoopers (PwC) survey commissioned by mental health organisation beyondblue, poor mental health costs Australian business a staggering $10.9 billion every year in absenteeism, reduced productivity and compensation claims. “It’s important that workplaces adopt a mentally health approach to employees. Mental health should be as important as physical health,” Mrs Bestmann said. “A mentally healthy workplace promotes a positive

club news with Mareeba Lions People ask; “What do Lions do with the money raised from the community?” Your local Lions Club is part of the largest humanitarian service organisation in the world; represented in 207 countries by 46,000 clubs with over 1.4 million members. Money raised by Lions clubs supports numerous international, national and local causes. Since 1968 the international Lions Foundation has given out more than US$950 million in grants. Lions are seen around the world providing care to people in need, whether it is because of a natural disaster or other recognised need. An example is the Sight for Kids partnership with Johnson & Johnson Vision Care Companies. More than 23 million children in Asia Pacific, Kenya and Turkey have had vision screening through this programme. These children might not otherwise have access to vision screenings. The programme also provides glasses and follow-up care as needed and is free to children in need. In Mareeba the Lions and Lioness Clubs have contributed during 2015/2016 financial year over $13,000.00 directly to local organisations, including the Animal Refuge, MISC, and Heritage Centre. A little more broadly the Clubs donated over $20,000.00

to organisations which benefit the community as a whole including the Queensland Cancer Council, Lions Childhood Cancer Research Foundation, Lions Spinal Cord Foundation, Lions Prostate Research, Lions Drug Awareness Foundation and Lions Eye Health. Internationally approximately $4,000.00 was donated to worthwhile causes including PNG Birthing Mothers Project, Fiji Cyclone Relief, and Lions International Disaster Relief. Through these combined donations Lions in Mareeba continue to fulfil their humanitarian ideals which now spans over 57 years of service to the community. Although membership of Lions is by invitation you are invited to enquire about joining this great international humanitarian organisation. It is not hard to become a Lion. Fellowship, Good times, Meeting people, Building lasting friendships, Service to the community, Learning new skills, Leadership and personal development – these are some of the reasons we are the Lions. Lions meet in Mareeba at the Mareeba RSL at 6.30 pm on the first and third Wednesday of the month. Check us out at http://mareeba.qld.lions.org. au

State Health Minister Cameron Dick with Dalrymple MP Shane Knuth and former Mareeba mayor Mick Borzi during a visit to Dimbulah’s health clinic back in July.

New jobs hope for health clinic TABLELANDS contractors will have a chance to bid for work on Dimbulah’s new health clinic after the State Government released a tender this week. Health Minister Cameron Dick made the announcement on Friday, with companies now free to bid on the design and construction tender for the new $4.5 million Dimbulah Primary Healthcare Centre. The latest development comes after funding for the new clinic was included in this year’s budget following an intense, 15-month lobbying effort by Dimbulah locals, Dalrymple MP Shane Knuth, former Mareeba Mayor Mick Borzi and former Cairns and Hinterland Hospital Health Service (CHHHS) chairman Bob Norman. “Having visited Dimbulah in July and after personally speaking with

the community about the need for this replacement facility, I am pleased to see that work to deliver this crucial infrastructure is progressing,” Mr Dick said. “We have accelerated the time frame for completion and early works are expected to commence on the site in March 2017.” The new clinic will replace the town’s existing facility, which has been run out of the same building since 1964 and is constricted by its small size. The asbestos-ridden clinic sees hundreds of people every week. Mr Knuth said the tender announcement gave people certainty the new clinic would go ahead after the entire CHHHS board resigned in September following a forecasted $80 million deficit in this financial year. “This provides that security and certainty for a modern health clinic for Dimbulah,” he said. “I have been communicating with the minister in the hope that contractors within the region are given the opportunity to tender for the clinic.” Mr Knuth said the clinic would serve patients across the region, while relieving pressure on Mareeba Hospital. “It will also allow the opportunity to expand into providing other health services,” he said. “It is very exciting for these rural communities.” Mr Knuth said residents from Dimbulah, Mutchilba and surrounding regions were “over the moon” about the new clinic. The facility will be built adjacent to the existing one, which will then be demolished once the new clinic opened.

WAY OF THE FUTURE: Unmanned Aerial Vehicles will now be allowed to spray agricultural crops in Queensland. PICTURE: CSIRO/STEFAN HRABAR

QUEENSLAND legislation has been amended to allow agricultural crops to be sprayed using Unmanned Aerial Vehicles (UAV). The changes would give Queensland producers access to the most innovative aerial spraying technology available. The improvements to the legislation have been made in order to provide Queensland producers with cost effective options for crop protection. UAV technology will be especially use-

ful for chemical application in areas with limited access or difficult terrain. This includes cropping situations as well as spraying weeds or pests where conventional ground-based technology or aerial application is unsuitable for the situation. Both producers and contractors using UAVs will need to be aware of their legal obligations, including the need to comply with all label instructions when applying agricultural chemical products and ensur-

Build contract awarded for power plant A GERMAN contractor will begin construction of MSF Sugar’s new $75 million Tablelands power station next May. thyssenkrupp Industrial Solutions was chosen by MSF for the Engineering, Procure, Construct (EPC) contract after a bidding war between five potential providers. The station, which will be fuelled by excess cane fibre, known as bagasse, will have a 24 MW generation capacity, exporting about 16 MW to the local grid, the balance covering the mill’s internal demand. MSF claims that will be enough to power all homes on the Tablelands and hopes to have another three stations built at their South Johnstone, Mulgrave and Maryborough mills by 2021. MSF Sugar Business Development general manager Hywel Cook said the design, size and technology aspects for the project required a company with considerable expertise and commercial history in delivering large scale industrial plants based on EPC lump sum contracts. “One priority for us was to source a company with an Australian presence and we achieved this. Wherever possible, subcontractors will be drawn from the local area,” he said. 80 jobs will be created during the construction phase, with thyssenkrupp expected to complete the power station by July 2018. The station will be built next to MSF’s existing sugar mill in Mareeba. thyssenkrupp Industrial Solutions Asia Pacific CEO Jan Lueder said the company shared MSF’s vision to grow highly efficient bio-power generation. “We are committed to a long-term partnership with MSF Sugar to transform the sugar industry in Australia to become more green and sustainable. This facility, based on 100 per cent bio mass fuel, represents our first step towards setting new standards for the sugar industry in Australia and Asia,” he said. MSF Sugar and thyssenkrupp have also entered an agreement on the provision of Front-End-Engineering Designs (FEED) and implementation planning for the South Johnstone Green Power Plant Project, commencing early 2017. MSF Sugar’s and thyssenkrupp’s intent is to continue the FEED work into plant construction through to the middle of next year.

suGar rEPOrts MOssMaN MiLL CrushiNG statistiCs WEEk 20 Mossman Mill throughput for the week was 47,075 tonnes of cane at an average crushing rate of 343 tonnes/hour with plant availability over budget. The start of the week saw more wet weather and cane supply short falls due to harvesting conditions. High mud loadings during this period, in combination with the NQEA Mud Filter vacuum pump motor failure, resulted in some factory stoppages to control the high mud levels. A shredder tip inspection late in the week resulted in a tip change out during a cane supply stop and on restart, the Cane Kicker drive failed to start requiring a change out of the motor. The High Grade Fugal Station has also been restricting the factory throughput during the week with machine availability low during the week keeping the maintenance teams busy. CCS levels have fallen in both supply districts this week. When Robert Langdon (Tom Hanks) wakes up in an Italian hospital with amnesia, he teams up with Dr. Sienna Brooks (Felicity Jones), and together they must race across Europe against the clock to foil a deadly global plot. Review by Louise Keller:

MAIN SERVICE 11AM AT MAREEBA CENOTAPH (Form up 10.45am at Mareeba RSL Club)

Efficiently made and thoroughly enjoyable, this third film in Dan Brown's Da Vinci Code franchise is filled with intriguing plot twists and surprises, always relying on the solid central presence of Tom Hanks, whose credibility and vulnerability is an asset to any film. If you liked the first two, you will certainly like this one. Once again, Hanks plays Robert Langdon, the clear-thinking symbologist with an innate ability to solve puzzles, hindered now by a dose of amnesia. This time around, he holds the future of mankind in his hand; the clock is ticking. Hard to believe it has been ten years since The Da Vinci Code and seven since Angels & Demons.

David Koepp, who wrote the screenplay for this latest offering, also wrote that for the latter. Director Ron Howard has paced the story nicely, putting his foot flat on the floor in the final reel as the action crescendos to a spectacular climax. The film delivers exactly what it promises: a taut psychological thriller filled with action, mystery and revelations. After a brief prologue, we meet Robert Langdon (Hanks) in a state of agitated confusion, suffering from hallucinations and nightmares as he lies in a hospital bed in Florence. Images of deformed bodies, blood, fire, water, serpents and a vision of hell swirl before him. Before long, he is on the run ducking bullets, accompanied by his attractive doctor Sienna Brooks (Felicity Jones), who is conveniently highly knowledgeable about useful things. Things like the works of Dante and in particular his painting of Inferno (Hell, in Italian), which appears on an artefact in his possession and seems central DR STRANGE (M) JACK REACHER (M) THU 3rd: 3.15, 5.45pm THU 3rd: 10.30am, 8pm to the puzzle at FRI 4th: 12.45, 5.45pm FRI 4th: 3.15, 8pm hand. This involves priceless paintings, stolen treasure, a death mask, secret passages and an ancient club. Meanwhile, we are left to wonder who are all the people chasing them, and what are the consequences of the erratic billionaire bioengineer Bertrand Zobrist's (Ben Foster, suitably deranged) vision to play god? The threat of contagion and a worldwide pandemic is imminent. Who is telling the truth and why? Jones makes the most of a role that is more than just that of a token female, while Danish actress Sidse Babett Knudsen (After the Wedding) is an interesting addition to the cast as the head of the World Health Organisation, who also has a personal history with Robert. In fact, the diversity of the cast - physically and ethnically - is one of the film's points of differentiation. Indian star Irrfan Khan (Life of Pi) is charismatic as the head of a private security firm; Omar Sy (unforgettable in The Intouchables) is an unknown quantity and Romanian actress Ana Ularu is striking as one of the pursuers. Look out for a major plot twist half way through the film that many may not see coming. As time runs out, everything goes into overdrive, allowing the action to escalate to a thrilling, cinematic, showy and somewhat melodramatic finale conclusion amid blood red water and ancient columns. Good entertainment.

Devils stave off upset RED Devils prevented what could have been a dramatic grand final upset to clinch the Men’s Summer Competition title from Young G’s in a 39-35 victory last Thursday night. Sporting the likes of veteran players Alex Hodi, Clint Cameron, Juni Bordeos and Craig Fairley, Devils were red hot favourites in the clash against a youthful G’s squad, who made light work of Ciggy Butts in their easy 76-49 semi-final win the week before. Both sides played it safe in the first quarter, conceding few points in a display of typical grand final intensity. With Young G’s unable to capitalise on chances around the hoop, Red Devils eventually responded with duo Leyton and Brandon Osborne combining for some two-point blitzes to put their side ahead 8-3 by quarter time. The gap began to widen in the second half, poor shooting again letting down Young G’s around the D. Devil’s Brandon Osborne hit a purple patch of form with a number of outstanding lay-ups and three pointers to help his side power ahead to a commanding 17-6 lead by half time.

But a revitalised Young G’s came out firing in the third quarter, painfully aware time was running out to challenge for the title. Jonah Hastie and Jeremy Mackay zipped through a complacent Devils defence to start clawing back some points, followed up with a nice threepointer from Young G’s captain Tyson Tatti. It was the Devils’ Osborne twins who responded, nailing their own three pointer before Mackay again stepped up and sunk two more to put the score at 24-18 with just four minutes left in the third quarter. The Osbornes again hit back to close out the quarter 29-19. A dogged arm-wrestle defined the final quarter, Young G’s scramble defence and Devils’ poor shooting keeping both sides scoreless in the first five minutes. Devils talisman Clint Cameron finally broke the impasse before Tatti responded to keep G’s just 5 points behind with just under four minutes

Killers murder Divas A SECOND-half blitz by Serial Killers (pictured) helped floor a fading Divas outfit 41-34 in Mareeba Basketball’s Women’s Summer League grand final. The first quarter was an even match, neither side asserting dominance in a freeflowing affair which saw scores at 8-7 in Killers’ favour by the end. The second quarter started in largely the same fashion before Divas captain Natalie Della Bosca strung together some neat twopointers on the counter. Not to be outdone, Killers captain Christine Bensted responded with a few of her

own, spurring her team on to make it 21-18 by halftime. Grimsted again went on the attack in the third quarter, building on Killers’ scoreline by combining with Tracey Leet for a late flurry of points to blow the scoreline out to 37-21 at the close. The final quarter continued to see Killers show know mercy, a great solo effort by Della Bosca helping her side regain some ground. But it wasn’t enough to salvage the game as Killers held firm to seal the win.

Mareeba 14's victorious over Innisfail At the end of play on Saturday Mareeba’s under 14 Cricket side claimed maximum points by defeating Innisfail outright. Mareeba 7/446 1st innings, Innisfail all out 1st innings 66 and all out 2nd innings 99. Top performances on the day were had by Jarrod France not out 113 off 69 balls, Ben Jones not out 98 off 106, Zac Myrteza 84 off 97 and Jett Prien 48

to go. Devils youngster Luke Fresta sunk a three pointer out of the blue, but Tatti wasn’t far behind, grabbing one back. After a foul shot whittled down the scoreline to just four points with less than 15 seconds re-

maining, Mackay went with a hail mary, nailing what appeared to be three points with enough time to snatch the title from Devils. But any hope of an upset was crushed as the shot was disallowed after Hastie jumped and grabbed the hoop before the ball entered it.

off 43. Some tight bowling from Arosh Heenkenda 1/2, Jarrod France 0/3 both off 2 overs and a solid effort from newcomer Brendon Johns with 0/8 off 3 overs, lead the way to a very convincing win. The next five weeks of Cricket are are all on home soil at Kerribee Park and Mareeba Cricket Club invites everyone to come along and cheer on the young boys.

A TABLELANDS grandmother is set to bust a move or two on the basketball court when she lines up for Queensland at next month’s Pan Pacific Masters Games. Ann Adams, 63, was selected to compete in the “Queensland Cactus” team at the Masters, alongside fellow local Rhonda Adil. The duo will play in the Women’s 60+ years category. “Cross my fingers I don’t get hurt,” quipped Mrs Adams. “I’m very nervous. I haven’t

met the other ladies yet.” The Mutchilba State School teacher aide has played basketball for the past 50 years, having also represented her region and state as a teen as well as coached several rep teams later on. “I’ve coached, refereed and everything over the years, as nearly as long as I’ve been playing,” she said. “I like the game because it’s very skilful.” Mrs Adams is no stranger to making veterans teams, having also competed in the bien-

nial Great Barrier Reef Masters Games twice before. The grandmother-of-three keeps her fitness up through basketball, tennis and running. “Maintaining balance is the main thing at this age, but everything else comes back to you,” Mrs Adams said. After next month’s Masters, Mrs Adams will also compete with Queensland Cactus in the B Grade division at the World Masters Games in Auckland next April.

Fun in the sun for awesome run

WELL DONE: Mareeba swimmer Katrina Coffey won a silver medal at the Trisome Games back in July.

Superfish Katrina ready for big time FANTASTIC TRIO: Jordan Hohns, 15 (left), Isaac Hohns, 16 (centre) and Jared Hohns, 18, came second, first and fourth respectively at the fun run.

BICENTENNIAL Lakes came alive with activity on Sunday as dozens of youngsters, families and fitness fanatics joined in Mareeba Rotary’s inaugural Fun Run and Walk. More than 120 competitors lined up for the 5km race, which took them on a cross-country adventure past Granite Gorge, the Leagues Club, Turf Club and Borzi Park before finishing back at the Lakes. Event co-ordinator Matt Jacob was delighted by the turnout, which had people compete in open men’s, open women’s and junior divisions. “We had great feedback from the runners and walkers,” he said. “It was beautiful weather… Everybody’s really stoked to get out amongst it. It’s a community event so everybody’s seeing their friends and family. “We had great support from our sponsors.”

In a welcome relief from the heat, runners were given a hose down on the final stretch of the run by local firefighters. Mr Jacob hoped the Fun Run and Walk would help revitalise the Lakes area and encourage other events to be hosted there. “Council’s said many times “We’re not going to put anything into it if people don’t use it”,” he said. Mr Jacob said he would make a few tweaks for next year’s event, including better signage, more shade structures and the possibility of holding a 2.5km run alongside the 5km course. The event, which also raised $1500 the Mareeba Friends of the Far North Queensland Hospital Foundation, was held as part of Mental Health Month. “We need to move to stay happy, sitting on the couch doesn’t achieve anything,” Mr Jacob said.

GRUELLING: Action on the course.

FLEXING: Event co-ordinator Matt Jacob and Glenda Johnston from Curves warms up the crowd before the fun run.

GOTCHA: Runners get a cold splash from the fire hose.

FUN AND FITNESS: 120 adults and children from 3 to 83 years took part in the fun run and walk on Sunday.

MAREEBA’S Katrina Coffey is vying for national glory, one stroke at a time. After some great performances in swimming at the 2016 Trisome Games in July, the 30-year-old is now setting her sights on qualifying in 50m freestyle for the Georgina Hope Foundation Australian Age Swimming Championships in April next year. Coffey made several top 10 finishes across several events she competed in at the Games in Italy, including a 4th place in backstroke, 6th place in 200m freestyle and a silver medal in the 4x50m freestyle relay. The strong achievements add to an already impressive medal tally for Coffey, who has been competing for about the past 20 years and currently holds the regional record for both 800m and 1500m freestyle. Coffey’s coach June Cotter, from Mareeba Wildcats Swimming Club, was full of praise for her pupil’s stellar effort. “Before she went to Italy, she was training up to two-and-a-half hours in the morning and afternoon,” she said. “She came to training for nine sessions a week, she was the only person

in the pool most of that time in winter, but she still came and she still did it. “It was honour to be her coach… We worked really closely together. We had to do a lot of work.” A win at the Championships under the S14, SB14 or SM14 classifications would see her chosen to represent Australia at the next Paralympics. “It’s going to be a huge opportunity to get out there and compete against many different athletes,” Coffey said. “You need to be really experienced to know exactly what you’re doing… I’ve got to have a good attitude and good behaviour.” But Cotter said there was still a long road ahead before that could happen. “The first goal she’s got to try and achieve is qualifying for the nationals…That’s our first stepping stone,” she said. “If she makes that, then we can look a little bit further.” Coffey thanked all her supporters for helping her get to the Trisome Games, and will represent Mareeba Wildcats at their swimming carnival on November 5.
