A yearn to learn
SHE may only be four-years-old, but Chiara Esposito (pictured) wasn’t all that worried about starting school this week. The St Thomas prep student has the support of her big sister Natalia, 8, to get her through and the pair couldn’t be happier. “I’ll be at the prep playground every day to check on her,” Natalia said. “I’m also looking forward to learning Japanese.” The pair were part of hundreds of Tablelands students who made their way back to school this week, eager to start learning again. Natalia and Chiara’s mum Danielle Esposito said she was proud as punch to now have both of them at school. “Chiara’s just so little, I can’t believe she’s already going,” she said. “It’s definitely an exciting time for them. Chiara’s been waiting a while to go to school with her big sister.”
Miracle in Mareeba A TABLELANDS pilot is lucky to be alive after he walked away from a horror plane crash last Saturday morning. The 25-year-old man was preparing to crop dust an avocado farm with his Air Tractor aircraft at Paddys Green along Mareeba-Dimbulah Rd when he was brought down about 7am. The cause of the crash is yet to be confirmed, with the aircraft’s fuselage ripped apart in the crash.
The pilot, who is employed by Atherton Tableland Air Services, was treated by paramedics for minor hand injuries and took himself to hospital shortly after. Two Queensland Fire and Emergency Service chemical decontamination teams were deployed to clean up spilt pesticide at the crash site. Anthony Carusi, whose farm the cropduster was supposed to be spraying, said he thought something had gone awry when the aircraft took
longer than usual to complete its circuit. “That’s when we realised something was wrong,” he said. “From where he was spraying to where he crashed was quite a distance. He obviously had enough time and skill to find a paddock to land on.” The pilot subsequently crash landed at a neighbouring farm near the Skybury Coffee Plantation. Bombs away at council auction TO the untrained eye, this clapped-out Ford POTENTIAL: Mareeba Shire Council hatchback (pictured) is destined for the scDevelopment and Governance manager rapheap. Mareeba Shire Council is set to auction off all 26 abandoned vehicles it currently has stored at its Kowa St depot, with sedans, hatchbacks and four-wheel-drives in varying states of disrepair to go under the hammer. Council Development and Governance manager Anthony Archie said potential buyers could restore the unloved vehicles to their former glory or use them for spare parts. “One of our council apprentices bought one to fix it up for his own personal use,” he said. “It could be a first car for someone, but they usually do need some work. We don’t have keys so you’d have to replace the ignition for starters.” Any unsold vehicles will be sold off by council for scrap metal. Mr Archie said an increase in car accidents and backpackers abandoning vehicles on the side of the road had prompted the council to clear out its growing impound depot. “We do chase up the last registered owner of the vehicle, which we can get from the number plates on the cars,” he said. “They are liable for the towing costs but abandoned vehicles to the depot, which could sometimes if they’re not forthcoming, we go to auction and try and be as high as $600 depending on how far away they were recoup our costs.” from Mareeba. Mr Archie said ratepayers copped the cost of towing Abandoned vehicles found on State roads within Ma-

reeba Shire are also towed to the depot, with the State reimbursing council for the cost. Council is still to decide on a date for the vehicle auction.
THE numbers keep on tumbling in the The Express’ KP Mango Competition. Yet another entry has topped the scales at 1.083kg – the heaviest of the lot so far. Shandell Hilditch’s eagle-eyed son Weston, 2, spotted the whopping mango on one of his grandfather’s mango trees.
“We’ve got a John Deere Gator utility vehicle that we go for a drive around the mango trees with in the afternoon and that’s when we found it,” she said. “Weston kept saying “Look mum, a big mango!”, so we ended up cutting it off the tree. We didn’t want it to go to waste and brought it back to the shed.” Mrs Hilditch, who lives with her family on her father Frank Tosoni’s farm in Dimbulah, said the fruit initially weighed about 1.1kg before she was told about the competition a few days later and was able to take a photo of it on the scales. “As the mango was ripening it was losing weight but we were still pretty happy with it when we took the photo,” she said. “Weston was very disappointed when we dropped it off at The Express office because he’d be eyeing it off all week.” Mrs Hilditch said her son loved spending time on her father’s farm and was “obsessed” with machinery. The mum-of-one said if her entry won the competition, she would put the money into Weston’s bank account for safe keeping.
“It’s definitely a bit of fun. It gets the locals involved,” Mrs Hilditch said. “It’s good to see the younger generation taking part in it.” Held annually by The Express, Total Food Network and Mareeba District Fruit and Vegetable Grower’s Association (MDFVGA), the competition is open to all Tablelands farmers and backyard growers in a bid to see who can grow the region’s heaviest Kensington Pride mango. All mangoes entered must be photographed on electronic scales, clearly displaying its weight and viewed by a member of The Express team or MDFVGA president Joe Moro. Mangoes must not be tampered with in any way. Entries close on January 31 with the winner to be announced at the end of the harvest season. First place will win $500, second $300 and third $200. All mangoes will be retained by The Express managing editor Carl Portella for verification and consumption.

Malanda muscles up
THE small Tablelands town of Malanda is poised to shed its image as a simple dairy producing region, with plans afoot for a major agricultural research facility. Internet blamed for bank closure A GROWING shift towards online banking has been blamed for the pending closure of Suncorp Bank’s Mareeba branch. The town’s Byrnes St branch will close on April 14, with Suncorp in the process of working with affected staff to see if they can be transferred to other parts of their business. “We have enacted a support program, which includes assistance in securing suitable alternative employment in other parts of the business where available, additional training and access to counselling where needed,” a Suncorp spokeswoman said. Branch customers were informed of the store’s closure by mail and email from January 12. The spokeswoman said about 80 per cent of Suncorp’s customers now did their banking online, which ultimately forced their decision to close the Mareeba branch. “The decision to close a physical store is never taken lightly, but we’re finding that fewer customers choose to do their banking at the store,” she said.
“Research shows over-the-counter transactions in branches are in decline, and levels of customer registration for online services is significant, and growing.” Mareeba customers will now have to travel to Suncorp’s Atherton branch if they need to do banking in store. However, customers can also use their local Australia Post office to withdraw and deposit money and check account balances using a Suncorp card and PIN. Fee-free ATM services are also available via the Bendigo Bank ATM in the Mareeba Post Office Centre. “Our priority is to ensure our customers understand the alternative ways of accessing their banking with us in their area, and to respond to any questions or concerns they may have,” the spokeswoman said. “We will host information sessions in store for customers who need help getting started with online banking, and anyone who wants to come along can register in store.”

“We’re very fortunate to have Val and Hollie on board,” she said. “There’s not many things like this that can be accessed on the Tablelands.” The free program will run a two-hour class once a week over an eight week period starting from February 9 and finishing on March 23. Margie’s Swim School owner Margie Thorpe has offered the group use of her pool for the classes. “Margie’s been volunteering all her time to help pull this off too,” Mrs Davies said. Mrs Davies, who suffered from breast cancer seven years ago, said the program was an excellent way of building a support network amongst survivors. “It’s not just the physical benefits, but there’s a lot of emotional benefits as well,” she said. “Each week there will be an exercise component and time for a guest speaker to address the group.” The guest speakers will discuss a range of lifestyle and health topics with the group, focusing on physical and emotional self-care. Registration for February classes closes on February 2, but women are still able to register for March classes after that date. Drone warning from regulator THE Civil Aviation Safety Authority (CASA) is reminding model drone pilots to take a safety first approach when flying their new toys. Thousands of new drone pilots launched their aircraft in the week following Christmas, but there are rules and restrictions as to where they can be flown. “Drone flyers must not cause a hazard to people, property or aircraft at any time,” said CASA spokesman Peter Gibson. “There are penalties for breaking the drone rules, with fines of up to $9000 possible.”
Mr Gibson said “open parks, a space with no people around or a secluded beach” were ideal places to fly drones. Drone flyers must stay more than 30 metres away from other people, never fly around crowds or groups of people and keep their drone in sight at all times. If drone flyers see a low flying aircraft they must ground their drone immediately. CASA is also calling on drone flyers to respect the privacy of other people by never flying over backyards or around homes, apart-
ments and townhouses. The regulator’s warning over drone use comes as the models are becoming increasingly popular on the Tablelands. The Model Aero Sports Club Of Tropical North Queensland (MASCOTNQ) is ushering in a new wave of pilots with the insanely fast “First Person View” (FPV) drones. FPV drone pilots are able to execute extremely fast and agile manoeuvres through a pair of goggles that transmit a live image from the drone’s onboard camera.
Consultation open for Priors Creek TABLELANDS Regional Council is urging local residents to give their feedback on the proposed Priors Creek project. Council’s draft master plan is now open for public consultation, with highlights including a recreational space with new playground, botanical planning area, retail/commercial space, bike track and parking for RV, caravans and trailers. “The Priors Creek precinct includes Council-managed public spaces,” said Tablelands mayor Joe Paronella “This area is open and accessible to everyone. These are spaces that matter to people – they impact on our lifestyles and our quality of life. So it makes sense that our Tableland residents have a chance to com-
ment on the draft master plans. “We have been through a long process to reach these master plans.” The draft Priors Creek Master Plan will be available for inspection at council's customer service centres, libraries and via the council’s website. Council will also be holding an information stall within the Silo Shopping Centre from February 1 to February 3 between 9am and 5pm each day. The consultation period will end on March 3 at 5pm. All written submissions must be signed by the person making the submission and email submissions will require a personal email address to be provided. Submissions can be emailed to info@trc.qld.gov.au To make a written submission, address it to: Chief Executive Officer, Tablelands Regional Council, Draft Priors Creek Master Plan, PO Box 573, ATHERTON QLD 4883. Career change just the ticket FRESH START: Mareeba’s Lauren McGowan will start work as a disability support worker after graduating with a counselling diploma from TAFE.
A MAREEBA woman will help make a difference to some of society’s most vulnerable people. TAFE Diploma of Counselling graduate Lauren McGowan is set to start work with Life Without Barriers in Cairns as a disability support worker after spending 12 years in aged care. “It was pretty much the first job I’d applied for after I’d finished my course, so I was pretty rapt about getting it,” she said.
While not specifically relating to her newly gained qualification, Ms McGowan said she could definitely make use of her skills to help clients deal with any issues they might have. “I’ll be working in the community assisting disabled people with personal care, medication and going on outings,” she said. “I’ll also be offering emotional support and whatever else the client needs done.” Helping disabled clients achieve their goals will also be high on the priority list for Ms
McGowan in her new job. Ms McGowan completed her diploma online after 18 months of study. “The course taught me so much about interacting with people, how to listen properly, how to help people with their needs and be more sympathetic and compassionate,” she said. “I’m glad I did the course because it has helped me a lot personally as I use the skills I learned all the time without even meaning to.

CLUB NEWS THE Mareeba Lions Christmas raffle was once again a great success. With over 150 individual prizes making up the 6 prizes drawn it is truly a magnificent raffle, which again raised over $10,000 to be used by Lions for local, national and international humanitarian causes. Early December 2016, a 6.5 magnitude earthquake struck Indonesia. While the tremor lasted only 15 seconds, more than 11,000 people were left homeless and more than 100 people died. Lions Clubs International responded immediately, issuing a US$100,000 Major Catastrophe grant to assist with immediate and long term needs. Local Lions also sprang into action, offering food, blankets, medical supplies and clean water to the victims. Measles is a highly contagious disease. Those who survive are often left with serious complications, including brain damage, hearing loss and blindness. Too many children are lost to a disease that we can prevent. For about US$1, a simple vaccine provides immunity against measles. That is why Lions committed to raising

Clarification on bus stop story IN the interest of fair and accurate reporting, I would like to emphasise that TRC Councillors have not back-flipped on the proposed upgrade of Atherton’s bus stop. We are committed to improving our infrastructure, enhancing economic development, undertaking proactive community engagement, and delivering honest and open communications. As we are about to embark on an extensive community consultation project for the potential redevelopment of Priors Creek in Atherton, it makes sense to investigate the relocation of the bus shelter and Atherton Visitor Information Centre (both facilities which need upgrading) as part of this new precinct. It is not therefore prudent to commit funds to a short-term project when a relocation of the site may better suit the future delivery of this service. Contrary to what your article on January 11 reported, we have not had substantial backlash from business owners and we have not cancelled funding based on a meeting with some business owners. We have advised the Department of Main Roads of our intention to undertake extensive public consultation, with a mutual understanding that funding will be available once the Tablelands community have had an opportunity to provide input and Council has made an informed decision on the future long-term location of the bus shelter. I encourage anyone to attend a Council meeting to find out how we discuss and make decisions in the best interest of the community we serve and hope that the reporting of our actions by The Express in future provides a balanced and informed insight for your readership. Far Northern development stagnated by politics I AM not real sure that the good intentions of all elected members of Government in Far North Queensland are singing from the same page on the real futuristic – strategic view for real development in this part of Australia. You only have to look at the Peninsula Development Road from Mareeba to Weipa where millions of dollars of development in mining – alternative energy plants and huge expansions of agriculture and beef cattle in this part of Australia are currently being developed as we speak. It is not rocket science that elected members of Local, State and Federal Governments from a line from from Innisfail to Normanton should be forming a cast iron bond within their government framework to unite at that level to secure every dollar of infrastructure they can possibly attain to improve infrastructure whether it be water – power or roads. It is very plain to see that the majority of elected members of government whether Local, State or Federal speak out for the Far North Queensland as a single identity in their domain and thus we in the north receive pittance in the big picture when the budgets are allocated for the bigger picture. It is time that elected members of government in Far North Queensland stood up and united as to be a LNP – ALP – Independent or a Mayor/Councillors in this part of Australia going your own way in your own electorates is a recipe for stagnation and zero growth for this region thus zero population growth – reduction in big secondary and agriculture industries which ultimately leads to low job prospects and less pay packets which underpin our local economy. Having outlined the above I believe politi-

Mosquitoes in North Queensland are extremely dangerous. Dengue Fever and Zika Virus being the biggest threats. Having a Maximum Pest Mangement ‘Mosquito Treatment’ for your home will reduce mosquito populations by 98-99%. The way the treatment works is designed to create a 'barrier' around your home using your trees and plants as part of the system. Our treatment works. We live in a humid warm climate perfect for mosquito breeding. Mozzies can lay eggs in as little as 2cm of water and travel up to 100 metres from breeding sites for food. You can control your home – but you cannot control your neighbours or what happens up to 100 metres from your home.
Don't let Mosquitoes dominate the best place in the world – the back yard... ▪ Tip out and wipe out any water from things like plastic containers, tarpaulins or buckets. ▪ Store anything that can hold water undercover or in a dry place, including work equipment, surplus materials or trailers and keep bins covered. ▪ Throw out any rubbish lying around, like unused or empty containers, tyres, additional materials and keep worksites tidy.

cians of the three tiers of government in Far North Queensland have not had a cohesive and synchronised approach to the true development of Far North Queensland for decades and it is time elected representatives today of the three tiers of government got out of their comfort zones and cohesively bonded to see as many of these projects achieved in the next 5 to 15 years: • Kuranda Range major upgrade – preferably a tunnel for the next century. • Deep sea port for Cairns. • Construction of Nylinga and Flaggy Creek Dams. • High level bridges for Rifle Creek and McLoud River on the Peninsula Development Road. • Heavy vehicle by pass road in Mareeba to incorporate high level bridges over Granite Creek and Atherton Creek. • Major upgrade of Hann Highway to include highway upgrade of Mount Garnet to Almaden – Dimbulah. • Major development/ upgrade of Mareeba airport for agriculture produce distribution to large markets and futuristic disaster management purposes for the region. Health service should front up on patient numbers at hospital The Cairns and Hinterland Hospital Health Service claims that the figures were reversed by December with 432 patients admitted to Mareeba Hospital, compared to 554 admitted Atherton Hospital. This can be attributed to the systematic reduction of bed numbers at Mareeba Hospital, and is no surprise. When the Hon Martin Tenni was our Member, Mareeba Hospital had 90 beds built with room for expansion, since then we have seen bureaucrats systematically reduce staffing to reduce beds to I believe approximately 50
beds. Although I was not referring to only one service – admissions, the CHHHS has chosen to highlight this one service to show Atherton Hospital is servicing more patients than Mareeba Hospital. I was referring to the total number of patients seen by the Hospitals which gives a true indication of the number of people being serviced by the Hospitals. I maintain that Mareeba Hospital is the largest hospital in the region and on average services double the patients that are serviced by Atherton Hospital monthly. I addition to my question to the Minister for Health, Cameron Dick which has not been answered, I believe another question has been raised by the CHHHS response. Why when I quoted the total number of patients serviced the response is to highlight only one service – inpatients stating that the figures have been reversed in December. Why did the CHHHS not quote the total number of patients serviced as I have or would this reinforce my statement that Mareeba services more than double the patients than the Atherton Hospital. Safety improvements needed on Bruce Highway
Motorists not worse off under ethanol mandate The State’s peak motoring body has reassured Queensland motorists they should not be worse off under the ethanol mandate. From 1 January, all large fuel retail-
ers are required by law to ensure three percent of its regular petrol sales each quarter were bio-fuel based. RACQ’s Lauren Ritchie said the mandate should still allow motorists choice between fuels and offer competition MORO AUTO REPAIRS across the State. “Motorists will still be THE EXHAUST SPECIALISTS able to choose between unleaded, E10, premium, LPG and diesel at most service stations, despite the mandate on retailers,” Ms Ritchie said. “There’s been some Mechanical repairs to all concern retailers will opt makes & models to remove unleaded pet Inspections & roadworthy rol altogether to reach the E10 sales quota, certificates as was the case in New Modification authorisation South Wales, but we are assured the lower mandate in Queensland will prevent this from occurring. “We encourage motorists to try E10 to see if M: 0419 795 562 it impacts on fuel usage F: 4092 4203 or performance of their A: 128 Mason St, Mareeba vehicles.”

The Bruce Highway through north Queensland has been named and shamed as one of the most dangerous sections of road in the country. The latest Australian Road Assessment Program (AusRAP) report, released late last year by motoring bodies, identified north Queensland sections of the Bruce Highway which had some of the highest combined crash risk ratings* of major roads across the nation. RACQ said the Bruce Highway accounted for 11 of 21 high-risk sections of national highway identified in Queensland. RACQ spokesperson Paul Turner said the three sections of Bruce Highway from Innisfail to Ingham, Ingham to Townsville and Townsville to Ayr registered an appalling 428 casualty crashes and 21 fatalities between 2010 and 2014.

“The shocking findings demonstrated the urgent need for accelerated investment on the Bruce Highway,” Mr Turner said. “We welcome the significant investment in the Bruce Highway over the past few years, but we’re asking the Federal and State governments to fast-track the 10-year program of works to deliver safer roads sooner.” Mr Turner said the safety improvements required on the Bruce Highway between Innisfail and Ayr included: Safety barriers or removal of roadside hazards, Shoulder widening, Intersection improvements (protected right turn lanes), Overtaking lanes or additional lanes and Audio tactile line markings (rumble strips). rOad again The New Year has heralded a renewed push for greater safety on Queensland roads following a rise in road deaths for 2016 compared to the previous year. Main Roads and Road Safety Minister Mark Bailey said the rising road toll, and in particular motorcycle fatalities, was alarming. “As we start a new year, sadly we are reflecting on the terrible carnage on our roads in 2016,” Mr Bailey said. “The 2016 road toll stands at 250 – which is seven deaths more than for the previous year and 27 deaths more than our lowest figure of 223 lives lost in 2014. “For the victims and their families, life will never be the same and this is absolutely heartbreaking.” Mr Bailey said the government was committed to lowering road trauma and distractions like mobile phones and drink driving would be priorities in 2017. “Taking your eyes of the off the road to look at your phone, even for a moment, means you could miss something critical happening ahead of you. “Updating your status or checking your snaps isn’t worth risking your life or those of other road users. “Drink driving continues to contribute to around one in every five people killed and one in every 12 people seriously injured on our roads. “Next month we will ask the community what they think about tougher responses to drink driving through a discussion paper.” Mr Bailey said a new Road Safety Action Plan would be released in July. “This will show Queenslanders exactly what we will be doing over the next two years to make our roads safer,” he said. “Our goal remains to eliminate deaths and serious injuries on our roads, but as we have repeatedly warned that cannot be achieved by government alone. “Our roads, our vehicles and our drivers have never been safer – the big challenge now is to reach out to individual Queenslanders who continue to take risks or fail to heed road rules. “I urge drivers, riders, pedestrians, passengers and cyclists to all take ownership of their behaviour and travel safely and considerately. “I especially plead with every motorcycle rider in Queensland to do the right thing on the road – ride to the speed limit, slow down in wet weather, wear a helmet and protective clothing, obey the road rules and don’t ride under the influence. “Road safety is everyone’s responsibility. If we all make a little effort, to-

gether we can have a huge impact.” Mr Bailey said although Christmas and New Year was now over, the Palaszczuk Government would continue to urge motorists to keep safety top of mind when driving over the holiday period and into the future. “Over the holiday season our “Memories” road safety campaign featured vintage holiday memories and experiences in a powerful message about the enduring impact of road trauma,” he said. “The campaign also encouraged people to get involved through social media by sharing their holiday memories on the Join the Drive website, and encouraging their family and friends to drive safely this holiday season. “A new version similar in tone will also appear in the lead-up to Australia Day and other long weekends in 2017. “People continue to enjoy holidays into the New Year and often travel to and from holiday destinations and I want people to remember to drive safely this holiday season. “Please drive safely and ensure your holiday memories are happy ones, as we all want a great, safe start to 2017.” Road safety initiatives 2016-17 • In February announced $5 million in funding for Round 5 of Community Road Safety Grants. • Held the fourth Safer Roads, Safer Queensland Forum • Delivery of road safety programs included: • Improved road infrastructure targeting highest risk locations • Rolling out the ‘Wide Centreline’ highway project • Motorcycle licencing reforms to ensure that testing and licensing requirements adequately prepare novice riders and encourage skill development. The changes include an off-road practical pre-learner training and assessment course, a minimum learner licence period of three months for all learner riders, an extension of the minimum RE (restricted) licence period to two years and stronger emphasis on riding behaviour and higher order skills in Q-Ride courses. • The installation of four new pointto-point speed cameras and 10 red light/speed cameras over the next two years to enhance the current program. (These cameras will be installed at locations that have a history of speedrelated crashes or crashes involving motorists disobeying traffic lights.) • The Government is also continuing to address speeding in school zones and will install flashing school zone signs at a further 200 school zones in the next two years.

EXPRESS sPORT TALENTED: Mareeba ballerina Isabel Morris was selected earlier this month to perform in Brisbane City Youth Ballet’s production of Enid Blyton’s The Magic Faraway Tree.
Taekwondo club kicks into 2017 – New students welcome The Queensland Taekwondo Academy has recommenced classes at the Mareeba Sports Hall and students anticipate a huge year of developments both locally and state-wide. Senior Branch Instructor Ben Gilmore is currently preparing students to do their best at the upcoming grading set for March 18. Taekwon-Do gradings are the stepping stones that each student progresses through on their journey to black belt. These realistic goals increase the student’s confidence and can provide an opportunity for students to pursue higher goals in other aspects of life. In saying that, the academy’s key focus is to cultivate strong moral character, while upholding the tenets of Taekwondo. Popularity for the club is based on its commitment to teaching traditional Taekwon-Do, accompanied by the inclusion of straight forward practical self defense training. The objectives of Taekwon-Do are: cultivate strong moral character, strengthen the body, bring out one’s best
qualities and display powerful techniques. In essence – to develop the mind, body, and spirit Queensland Taekwon-Do Academy students from Cairns, Kuranda, Mareeba, and Mackay will also take part in a full weekend training seminar to be held at Lake Tinaroo in June this year. Instructors from throughout the State will share their vast knowledge with those attending. The academy celebrates over 30 years continuous operation state-wide, and this is primarily due to the dedication of the instructors, who maintain the high standards as set down by the late General Choi Hong Hi, Founder of the Art. Join now and receive a free uniform. Your introductory session is free. Enquiries about Queensland Taekwon-Do Academy training can be directed to chief instructor Jeff Dieben on 0437 438 196 or through our website at www.queenslandtaekwondo.com.au

A YOUNG Mareeba ballerina has danced her way to success in a rendition of a classic children’s novel. Isabel Morris was selected as one of just 90 dancers from Australia and New Zealand to perform in Brisbane City Youth Ballet’s production of Enid Blyton’s The Magic Faraway Tree earlier this month. More than 300 dancers auditioned
for 90 spots available in the production, which ran five performances at Southbank’s Conservatorium Theatre in Brisbane between last Tuesday and Thursday. Isabel’s ballet teacher, Maree Gear, choreographed her video audition in October 2016, with the youngster also performing in December’s Carols by Candlelight in Mareeba.

APUNIPIMA Cape York Health Council and the Indigenous All Stars Basketball team have helped to drive a healthy message through three clinics at Aurukun earlier this month. The clinics delivered healthy lifestyle information and hands-on basketball skills to around 60 of the town’s young as part of the local Police Citizen Youth Club’s School Holiday Program. Held between January 10 and 12, Apunipima All Stars Head Coach Joel Khalu, Apunipima Health Promotion officer Andrew Packer and Apunipima Tackling Indigenous Smoking Health Workers Josh Mene and Jordan Toikalkin spoke to the youth of Aurukun about the risks of smoking, benefits of quitting, the importance of attending school and why it matters to make healthy choices. After the talks, the young people en-
joyed a healthy snack and got down to an afternoon of activity, including basketball drills and games. Joel Khalu, who lead the All Stars to victory over the Maoris in last year’s best of three Trans – Tasman Tournament, said the clinics were a chance to pass on a serious message in a fun environment. “I talked to the participants about my own story – playing basketball, leading teams – and how that has been possible through making healthy choices, such as being active, eating well, and not smoking,” he said. “It was great to talk to them about why it matters to make good choices and the good results that come from resisting what looks easy at the time. Having goals, working towards them, not getting distracted – these are the things that change lives.”

Srhoj steps up for Bulls THE MAREEBA Bulls’ coaching puzzle is a step closer to completion after Alex Srhoj confirmed he would head the premiers’ team for a fourth year running. The Express can reveal the popular coach and club technical director agreed to take the reins at last Monday’s club meeting, alongside Angelo Tatti, who returns as second division coach. Andre Soncin will head the Bulls’ youth team, but the club is still in need of a ladies and reserves coach. Srhoj, who lead the Bulls to two back-to-back grand final wins in 2014 and 2015, came agonisingly close to making it three before losing to Stratford 2-0 in last season’s FNQ Premier League grand final. “2016 was a great year for blooding some new youngsters, who I believe will now be ready for 2017,” he said. “But we also had a target on our back, everyone wanted to knock us down in 2016, the league evolved and also became more even.” Srhoj said he would focus on a thorough preparation for 2017, a lack of which was partly to blame for the Bulls’ poor form early last season. The side will also have to deal with the departure of midfield dynamo Ben Fresta, who is moving to Brisbane. “You cannot replace Ben, but it’s an opportunity for someone else to step up and make the position their own,” he said. “The trials and tribulations for 2016 have given us the belief and depth to really push for more success this year, and there are not just one or two players who could step in but rather five or six Gerard Fox scored 31 for Atherton.
LEADING THE PACK: Newly returned Mareeba Bulls premiers coach Alex Srhoj watches over a pre-season training session last Thursday night.
young and experienced players.” All Bulls senior, youth and ladies squads returned to training for the first time last week, with a healthy turnout on both Tuesday and Thursday night. Meanwhile, Tatti has also taken up a second role as the Bulls’ new vice-president. “It’s a bit of step up to what I did in the past few years. I’m
Atherton continues winning form Atherton’S first grade side got another monkey off their back after winning their first game at Miller Oval since Tully re-entered the competition in 2013. Atherton won the toss and elected to bat, keeping his boys in the shade for the worst of the stifling conditions. Backing up recent form, Atherton posted their best one-day score since 2012 and closed the innings 7-251. Dan Parnell and Pete Sceresini both posted 50 in some good partnerships including; Sceresini and Boorman 56, Sceresini and Parnell 57, Parnell and Constant 66. Dan Parnell provided the crowd with some big-bash style entertainment hitting four sixes off an over to finish with 69 off 51 with 5 sixes and three fours. Pete Sceresini was next best with the bat scoring 61 off 83, during his two hours at the crease in very hot conditions. Tully set about their chase confidently and at 3-93 off 15 overs, Atherton were having deja vu moments until Tom Boorman picked up four wickets for 23 runs to give him five for the day and put the target out of reach. Atherton now play Norths in a T20 semifinal at Griffiths Park on Australia Day, with the winner progressing to the grand final in the afternoon.
excited and can’t wait,” he said. “I’m hoping the club’s going to be very successful this year. It looks promising.” Tatti said he wanted to win “the treble” for his second division team this season, after they won the premiership and Crad Evans Shield last year but failed to make the grand final.

Golf club to celebrate Australia Day Mareeba Golf Club is encouraging locals to get out for a swing on the course tomorrow to celebrate Australia Day. The club will be hosting a nine hole Sporters Competition from 7.30am. Club president Ron Blake said conditions were ideal for a hit out. “The recent rain has made a significant impact on the course, it’s in a beautiful condition at the moment” he said. “We really encourage members to have a hit this Australia Day and of course welcome visitors and new members to the club.”
