Who will run? – COUNCIL ELECTIONS 2016 –
By Carl Portella
M
ayor of the Mareeba Shire Council, Tom Gilmore, has not yet stated publicly if he will run for the position he has held admirably since the de-amalgamation of the Mareeba Shire from Tablelands Regional Council. There’s no need to, in fact its common knowledge that Mr Gilmore will again seek to run for
the position, in a bid to consolidate the efforts that he and his team of councillors have accomplished since the new council was formed on January 2, 2014. With Christmas just a week or so away – and local Government elections looming on March 19 – Who will run against him at the ballot box on election day? It’s the question on everyone lips; who is brave enough to put their hand up to run against
Tom Gilmore? And if there is someone, where are they? How can the local electorate make an informed decision on new candidates, when they will have just a matter of weeks to dissect the information prior to making a decision? There is no doubt about it, the performance of this council under his leadership has done extraordinary things; some of them difficult at times, but mostly fair to all without losing focus on the fu-
ture and what this council set out to achieve from very humble beginnings. The newly formed team seeking election on March 19 next year comprising of spokesperson Alan Pedersen, Nipper Brown, Karen Ewin, Mary Graham, Kevin Davies and Allan Holmes have given Mr Gilmore the ultimate compliment in not putting forward a candidate to run against him. Graduates sign off in style By Justin Fris MAREEBA State School captains Chase Burns and Ellie Fink addressed their peers for the final time at last Thursday afternoon’s graduation and spoke of their love for representing their school at all events. “As one of the school leaders, I’ve had many opportunities to participate in school-based activities,” Chase said. “All have been worthy and well worthwhile. Whether it was fundraising, or helping in the playground.” Ellie Fink said: “I will look back on my time here with a sense of pride, affection and dignity. I think I can speak for the Year 6 cohort, when I say that we will cherish our memories here.” MSS Principal Mandy Whybird provided a broad snap-
shot on how the landscape had changed since the ‘Class of 2015’ began in 2008. ‘Graduation ceremonies are always significant,” she said. “They are a significant moment of achievement and the beginning of a new phase of change.” She added: “Seven years ago – when you first came through the gates – Kevin Rudd was the Prime Minister of Australia, Barack Obama was inaugurated as US President and swine flu was declared an international epidemic. “In all that time since then, you have all gained a wealth of educational and life experience. “As you know from the excursions, camps and the classroom activities, your life is made up so much more than classroom lessons.”

MAREEBA’s Overflow FNQ store continues to set the pace in the region for offering quality customer service and products to the town. At the recent annual award ceremony for Overflow FNQ stores, Mareeba rated heavily across several sectors, including: 1st in overall performance, 1st in shrinkage (least amount of stolen or damaged goods), 2nd in highest sales percentage increase and 2nd in overall GP percentage increase. It only takes one quick stride into the store to understand why they have performed so well over a sustained period. Staff are pleasant, upbeat and always keen to assist whoever is in need. Doreen Salerno – who is Overflow FNQ’s Cairns area manager – said the store is
frequented by both young and elderly residents. “The award is incredible really,” she said. “It’s a really great achievement for the store.” ‘Christmas in July’ is also tremendously popular with travelling ‘Grey Nomads’, who really get into the festive spirit. In turn, staff always ensure that the shelves are stocked to meet these requirements. Overflow FNQ managing director David Hall said: “It is interesting that while Cairns and the Tablelands took home all the major awards this year - they went south to Townsville in 2014. “What it has shown to us is a cyclical pattern of performance and how success over the long term is spread across all markets.” Staff members are anticipating a bumper Christmas period in coming days.

NQ irrigation proposal launch KATTER’s Australia Party trio – Bob Katter (Federal Member for Kennedy), Robbie Katter (Member for Mt Isa) and Shane Knuth (Member for Dalrymple) – recently launched their new proposal for irrigation in the region. Speaking in Townsville, Bob Katter said the proposal put forward would effectively have ‘something for everyone’. “Successive Queensland Governments have in the last 25 years given out virtually no irrigation licences,” he said. “In fact the whole mid-west region, an area the size of Victoria that in the main requires no land clearing permits, has had only one irrigation development in the last 26 years. “The last LNP Government issued irrigation licences that could be counted on the fingers of one hand; and the bulk of those were to corporate or

near-corporate operations. “So the LNP Government gave no benefit to anyone, but indicated they were ‘looking into it’. “Well, every Government for the last 26 years has been ‘looking into it’ and according to their press releases they’ve burnt up over $103 million of public funds, for not the slightest scintilla of benefit. “The Federal Government’s been there for two years and nothing – just talk.” He added: “Yet every river and major creek north of the Flinders River runs near enough to every year. “The ridiculous nature of this is that no matter how many rivers and dams you build, how much you irrigate, the giant rivers of the Gulf will run every year at the start of the year and be a series of waterholes late in the year.”
What will next year’s Council elections bring for local people? From Page 1 No one has yet put their hand up to run against Mr Gilmore and with just a little over three months remaining, time is surely running out. Residents of the Southern Tablelands however, seem content with the mayoral candidates that have come forward. Rod Marti and Peter Hodge have both announced their candidacy for the mayoral position at the TRC; and unknown entity Paul Kneubuhler seems to have thrown his hat into the ring. Jim Chapman, former Mayor of the Atherton Shire Council, spoke with The Express last
week, encouraging locals to step forward and be counted. Mr Chapman was Mayor of the Atherton Shire for 20 years, until he retired when the four Tableland shires amalgamated in 2008. “Anyone who wants to run for a council position doesn’t need a wealth of experience, but common sense is essential; the experience will come as you get on with the job,” he said. “The important thing is that you do it for the right reason; and that reason should be based around your community, the whole community. Not just where you live and how you can help to make it better and grow and prosper into the future.
Former Atherton Shire Mayor Jim Chapman would like to see fresh faces at the Tablelands Regional Council.

“In times gone by it wasn’t done for the money - we didn’t get any or very little - it was done because you wanted to contribute to the community you lived in. “Yes, some new faces that bring in fresh ideas would not go astray in the TRC and people should not be afraid to stand up; we need a better crop than what we have now and one that is unified so they can get on with the job.” As the election date gets closer, more candidates will more than likely come forward in both the Mareeba Shire and the Tableland Regional Council. Residents can only hope that there is a Jim Chapman among them.

Her theme for the entry was extremely unique. “My entry was a 16 line poem and it’s called ‘merely friends’,” she said. “It’s about the connection between two people (based on her online conversations with a friend on Skype).” Year 9 student Alice Sibthorpe grew up briefly in Chad (Africa) as a child and moved to Mareeba a few years ago. It was really fun. I loved the different culture.” Finnian (‘Finn’) Weaver recently broke a town record, swimming 400 laps of the Mareeba swimming pool. This arduous challenge was all in the name of a good cause, with Finn aiming to raise $4000 for the Indie Rose foundation. Away from the pool, Finn enjoys Health and Physical Education (HPE) lessons – and hopes to study paramedical science further along down the line. “I love doing experiments (in science lessons),” he said. “I’m looking forward to Chemistry and Physics next year and the ‘Brain Bee’ competition.” Ms Ellacott also outlined the significant achievements of Tristan Burford-Baynes and Alex Barbir, who were absent from the photo. Tristan – a Year 10 student – will complete a work experience placement under the guidance of Dr Earnest Jennings at JCU, off the back of his fantastic academic year. Alex, who recently graduated from high school, completed two online university subjects this year via Central Queensland University, receiving a credit and distinction. Mayor Scott encouraged by position By Justin Fris
Cook Shire Mayor Peter Scott with Qld Premier Annastasia Palaszczuk amid a scenic Cooktown backdrop.
AS local government pauses for the festive season, Cook Shire Council Mayor Peter Scott is upbeat about the overall 2014/2015 financial performance of the jurisdiction. “I’m really pleased with the 201415 Cook Shire Annual Report,” he said. “It’s very user friendly and provides a really good succinct summary of the Council’s current financial position. “Anyone can pick it up and easily understand Council’s position and why. I encourage people to have a read and when they have they’ll better understand the tight situation Council is constantly in. “And then they can put the report down, look around and see what we’ve got. We’ve done pretty well.” Despite the ‘tight’ nature of the
Budget, the CSC has been able to provide much needed assistance to several community organisations throughout the year. Council was able to provide $46,511 to several art and project event applicants via the Regional Arts Development Fund (partnered by Arts Qld and the CSC). Some of the lucky applicants included: Viva La Discovery ($6,220), Forty Eight Days ($10,000 – Cooktown Re-anactment Association), Musical Ship Workshops ($1,300), Gallipoli 100 Year Memorial Outdoor Area ($6,500 – Cooktown RSL Sub-Branch) and Banks Florilegium 2 ($12,656 – Vera Scarth Johnson Gallery Association inc). Major events also received a massive boost in the Shire, with the Cooktown Show Association ($10,000),
Disaster training In preparation for the looming cyclone season, the Mareeba Shire Council recently conducted a series of full disaster management training exercises, by activating the Local Disaster Co-ordination Centre (LDCC) and running several simulated outcomes. “The training played out a number of scenarios which might be typical of those issues expected to arise during a cyclone event or other disasters. Scenarios such as how to deal with structural damage, flooded areas, and power lines down,” Mayor Tom Gilmore said.
Mayor Tom Gilmore said that this exercise was a critical part of the council’s preparation to ensure the safety of citizens. “The LDCC is the co-ordination centre which receives calls from persons in distress and then the calls are tasked to the various agencies such as the SES, Ergon, the Police and the Ambulance Service,” he said. There was approximately 40 Council staff involved, all of whom have volunteered to be in attendance in the event of an emergency caused by a disaster situation.
Cooktown Races ($5000) Far North Qld Hospital Foundation ($5000) Cape York Folk Club ($5000), Cooktown Re-enactment Association ($5000) and Our CDF ($5000) all getting a timely boost for their centrepiece events. The CSC also provided $10,425 in Community Development grants, which were allocated across a wide variety of organisations. Some of these included the Cooktown Horse Sports Association ($900), Full Boar Thai Boxing Club ($2000), Roseville and District Citizens Association ($1080) and the Kalan Enterprises Aboriginal Corporation ($2000). Several concessions were also made available to ratepayers across the Cook Shire, including $41,704.39 of funds which were divided up amongst 299 pensioners living in the region.

Insight into health of residents THE Cairns and Hinterland Hospital and Health Service have recently released data in regard to overall health in the Far North – and it doesn’t bode well for the Mareeba Shire or the Southern Tablelands. Study findings indicate that more women in the region are exercising less (50.3 per cent) and smoking more (16 per cent) than the overall state averages (57.7 per cent for exercise, 12.1 per cent for smoking) suggest. It appears men exercise more in the Mareeba Shire, with the region’s average of 66.2 per cent well ahead of the 62.6 average. Chronic alcohol use in the region still appears to be a major issue, with people drinking at risky levels either once a week or over a sustained period.
8.8 per cent of females within the Mareeba Shire drink to excess at least once a week (state average 6.6 per cent) compared with males at 20.7 per cent (state average 22.7 per cent). Adult Community Health Services Team Leader, Matthew Cowan, said chronic disease rates in the Cairns and Hinterland Hospital and Health Service area continued to be significantly higher than other areas of Queensland. “Poor lifestyle choices are the single biggest factor to someone developing a chronic disease,” he said. “Unfortunately the healthier lifestyle messages are not resonating with the community and as a result we continue to have extremely high rates of chronic disease.” Mareeba Shire Council Mayor
Tom Gilmore said there were no real surprises in the data, with the findings uniform across several Far North jurisdictions. Despite the negative nature of the findings, Mayor Gilmore said there were a wealth of positive exercise and fresh produce options for those living within the MSC region. “The Mareeba Shire is replete with sporting and exercise activities,” he said. “The simple activity of walking is always an option here – whether it is along our many footpaths or down near the Bicentennial Lakes precinct. “In terms of organised team sports, we have soccer, rugby league, (cricket) and squash. There really is an even spread of opportunity for exercise.”

Local Management – Channel Irrigation Schemes – Expression of Interest
Country race meet cull By Justin Fris A groundswell of public support is forming for the Queensland thoroughbred racing industry, in light of planned cuts to country racing by the Palaszczuk Government. Locally, the future of regular race meetings in both Cooktown and Mareeba is under threat, along with cuts to prize money. The following exert is from the tabled Tracking to Sustainability report, which outlines the proposed impacts to Queensland regional horse racing, from July 1, 2016. 1) The removal of the Country Queensland Showcase Series (which is TAB covered), the Celebrate Country Series and the Sustain Country Series. The feedback from the consultations was that the various country racing series do not provide the same level of value to the community as standard non-TAB meetings. 2) A further reduction in the number of non-TAB meetings, where clubs that race between four to seven times a year are reduced to three meetings each. The intention
The future of country racing in Queensland is currently under a dark cloud.
of reducing these meetings is to increase field sizes at nearby TAB courses, allowing clubs to run on a four monthly basis for community benefit. Clubs may obtain funding for an additional race meeting or meetings from alternative sources (i.e. sponsors, regional councils) and community action. In that event, RQ will facilitate the conduct of any such meeting, agreeing an appropriate date with the club in question. RQ may also be willing to provide an additional meeting or meetings subject to the club providing adequate subsidisation of the stewarding and race day costs incurred by RQ. 3) A reduction in strategic and nonstrategic prizemoney levels. 4) A reduction in the per meeting subsidy payment for strategic non-TAB meetings to $1,000 and limiting the value add prizemoney for non-TAB prizemoney to 50 per cent of sponsorship raised. The intention of this measure is to direct clubs to use sponsorship moneys to maintain facilities and provide community events. 5) As a longer term strategy, using a portion of the funds saved from the above, RQ intends to develop a regional hub and spoke
based model for country racing whereby: 6) A central hub in each region will be upgraded to TAB status and will race on a regular basis; and the remaining clubs in the region will race once or twice per year. Since the planned cuts have been announced, the Palaszczuk Government cabinet has been reshuffled, with Grace Grace (Member for Brisbane Central) replacing Bill Byrne as Racing Minister. Ms Grace – who is also holds the Employment and Multicultural Affairs portfolios – has made no public comment on the report, nor outlined her experience within the racing industry. Mareeba Turf Club secretary John Thurlow said there had been a fantastic response from both locals and members within the industry since the unwanted news came to light. “There’s been a fantastic groundswell of support for us,” he said. “The whole of Qld racing have really come together. “We are in the process of creating a ‘Save our Country Racing’ Facebook page, along with preparing a petition which people can sign at our Boxing Day meet.”

TRC to overhaul tender process ATTENDING Tablelands Regional councillors (Cr Hodge, Cr Stocker, Cr Linwood and Mayor Lee Long) voted unanimously in favour of procedural changes to the TRC’s tendering process on December 3. The vote means that from now on, the TRC will no longer publicly disclose tender prices prior to deliberation in meetings, as they are now classified as ‘confidential’. Once meeting minutes have been successfully ratified at the ensuing meeting, the TRC will post online both a summary and rank of tender hopefuls – however no individual prices will be listed.
Report author Susanne Andres (TRC – Manager Finance) said the changes would allow for a more transparent, confidential process. “Currently, (the) Tablelands Regional Council conducts public tender openings unless otherwise stated in the tender documentation. “All submissions are treated as commercial in confidence, apart from the respondents’ names and the lump sum tender figures. “Once awarded by Council, the successful tender is added to the publically published Register of Contracts. No other information is
Cook Shire to help community THE Cook Shire Council will be providing $20,000 towards local community projects, as part of the Economic Development and Community Services Grant program. Eight different projects were approved for funding under the program, which will be open for applications again in 2016. ‘Clean Up Cape York’ was funded for $2000 for a public education campaign to clean up litter on the Cape. The Cooktown school Parents and Citizens
Association was approved for $1990 of funding to go towards shaded tables and seating for the primary and secondary school. The Queensland Country Women’s Association Cooktown Branch will receive $1951 to be used for advertising banners and a new fridge. Australia Pacific Lodges will receive $5000 to be used for the annual Mungumby and Cooktown mountain bike events. The Cooktown Chamber of Commerce and Tourism was approved for funding of $5000 to
THE Atherton Landfill will be temporarily closed until December 28, while various construction works are completed at the facility. There is currently no ability to access mulch or drop off green waste, steel or general landfill waste at the site.
However, the Transfer Station is still operational with domestic recyclable and household waste able to be received. As an alternative, green waste and steel can be taken to the Herberton Transfer Station on Syme Road, Herberton, which is open

released publically.” She added: “The whole tender process should be auditable, transparent and accountable, but there is a requirement to treat tender documentation confidential. “In view of this, the fact that Council awards contracts based on publically available officer reports makes it difficult to relay the full information needed for Council to make an informed decision. “It also exposes councillors and officers to increased lobbying by tenderers, which compromises good governance.”

Buy, save and support and our community will suffer. “We trust that the EDF will diligently work for holistic solutions which deliver the best multiplier effect to the economy. “In the past we have seen short-sightedness and nepotism or favoritism be the ruin of some well meaning investment schemes. “The EDF is small and targeted and will hopefully stick to finding the best bang for the Tablelands for each buck it invests.” Barron Valley Hotel manager Ryan Charrington said locals may not be aware of the impacts of not supporting local business. “Many do not realise that each dollar spent outside of Atherton never comes back, whereas a dollar spent in Atherton at local businesses circulates and also helps keep our employment numbers up,” he said.
THE Atherton Chamber of Commerce (AoC) is encouraging residents on the Southern Tablelands to remain loyal and supportive to local business. With the festive season only a heartbeat away, many could easily jump into their cars to Cairns and spend up big. However under the guidance of the AoC and the Tablelands Regional Council, SHOP TABLELANDS is a concept encouraging locals to support local jobs and the economy. Through the tireless work of TRC economic development officer Nicole van Beuningen, this concept has been financially supported since 2014. AoC vice president Christine Doan said: “The Economic Development Fund (EDF) has been welcomed by (the local) Chambers,” she said. “We know that without a strong and sustainable economy, our environment

WHY go all the way down the Kuranda or Gillies Range for a feed in Cairns, when you can get quality service and hospitality in Malanda? Since 1911, the Malanda Hotel has been locally owned – and become an undisputed icon on the Southern Tablelands. The hotel operates on a solid menu, with several quality dishes offered each night at a refreshingly affordable price. Malanda Hotel manager Sharon Graham said the venue provided an excellent backdrop for functions and is the largest wooden hotel in all of Australia. “We always like to provide a family-friendly atmosphere, with good old fashioned service at a good price,” she said. Monday night’s speciality are $1 oysters (natural or Kilpatrick), which is followed up by ‘2 for Tuesday’ – where patrons can purchase two meals off the Tuesday set menu for $25, which rotates each week. Wednesday is an absolute must for schnitzel lovers, with a quality schnitzel (beef, chicken or veal) only setting
you back $14. Seven ‘toppers’ are also available for this option, which are all $3 extra. Thursday night’s are allocated for the beloved ‘T-Bone’, at $18. If you are feeling peckish over the weekend, the ‘Big Breaky’ ($13.50) will cater to your needs. Lunch is served daily between 10am and 2pm, with breakfast options included. The difference with the Malanda Hotel is about their unrivalled desire to provide quality service to the patrons. Mrs Graham said that she encourages her staff to converse with customers and build up a solid, genuine rapport. This naturally ensures a happy environment for both parties. So if you are keen to experience a quality, filling and enjoyable pub experience with those who matter to you, the Malanda Hotel should be your first destination on the Tablelands. Lunch (10am-2pm) Dinner (SunThurs, 6pm-8pm and Fri-Sat, 6pm8.30). For all bookings, please phone the Malanda Hotel on 4096 5101. Keep an eye out for the hotel’s entertainment options on Australia Day.

Coles Mareeba leading the way through ‘Redkite’
Notable achievement for Cooktown midwife
COOKTOWN has another reason to be proud, after an impressive result was attained at the recent Queensland Health excellence awards. Deidre Murphy (pictured) – who was one of four finalists in her leadership category – was awarded a ‘highly commended’ for her leadership and involvement with the Cooktown Cluster Midwifery Group Practice. Ms Murphy said the formation of the practice was very much a ‘team effort’; and praised all that had worked alongside her. “It’s been a dedicated effort by all the staff here at Cooktown – midwives, nurses, doctors and non-clinical staff – and we’ve also been strongly supported by the maternity unit at Cairns Hospital and by the Cook Shire Council,’’ she said. “I’d also like to take the opportunity to pay special tribute to our Director of Medical Services at Cooktown, Dr Tash Coventry, who lobbied strongly for more
SHOPPERS who visit Coles Mareeba have the opportunity to assist families and young children impacted by cancer this Christmas. Facilitated by both Coles and ‘Redkite’, the five week campaign gives everyone an opportunity to purchase a $2 ‘Redkite’ donation card – with proceeds put toward financial and emotional support for those battling the disease. Redkite General Manager Marketing and Fundraising, Monique Keighery said: "We know that demand for Redkite's support, including financial help and counselling sessions, increases in December when families often face additional pressures,” she said. “By buying a $2 donation card at Coles supermarket counters this festive season, shoppers can help children and young people with cancer and their families when they need it most." Coles State General Manager for QLD, Paul Brad-
shaw, encouraged local shoppers to get behind the campaign to support sick kids and their families this Christmas. “Cancer touches the hearts of so many of our customers and team members so we wanted to give locals the opportunity to show their support this Christmas.” The Christmas fundraising campaign for Redkite at Coles supermarkets ends on December 29, 2015.

than 10 years for the return of birthing services to the region. “I think all of us here at Cooktown feel a strong sense of shared satisfaction at the success of the new service and are looking forward to many more babies to come.’’ Torres and Cape Hospital and Health Service Board Chair Bob McCarthy said Ms Murphy had been involved with the birthing service project for two years. “Throughout the past year of operation and the previous period of establishment, Deirdre exhibited a tireless commitment to high professional standards, attention to detail and an ability to consult widely and effectively. “With astute interpersonal skills and exceptional leadership, Deirdre’s dedication to ongoing academic and clinical up-skilling ensured the new midwifery team developed into a highly functioning entity.”
The Mayor, Councillors and staff wish all residents of Mareeba Shire Council a merry Christmas and a prosperous New Year.

entertainment Grease – that’s a wrap
The cast and crew of Mareeba Theatre Group’s 2015 show ‘Grease’. By Justin Fris
FOR the cast and crew of Mareeba Theatre Group’s showstopper performance ‘Grease’, the final product is a delicate mixture of passion, dedication and hard work. Director Ida Portella’s unique take on a timeless classic has enthralled audiences in Mareeba, with people travelling from as far as Innisfail for the shows. Together with choreographer Maree Gear, the duo created a uniquely comical, yet accurate portrayal of the original film. Whilst travelling, Ida managed to pur-
chase a 2nd edition copy of the original film script. The performance is starkly different to the internationally acclaimed musical. “We adapted much of the script to suit our performance,” she said. “We made sure that we included all of the classical lines and ensured that it really related to the original movie.” The cast began rehearsals all the way back in May. There were countless hours of not only remembering lines, but also learning particular dance moves. “When we started rehearsal at the end of April, early May, not many of the cast
had really danced before,” Ida said. “What Maree Gear has done in terms of choreography and assisting with this process has been absolutely incredible.” Despite a few hurdles prior to opening night (illness and a torn Achilles), ‘Grease’ hit the ground running from the off. More shows were scheduled – such was the demand – along with a special charity night, which assisted two local not-for-profit organisations. “We decided to organise a ‘Charity Night’ at one of our additional shows, where we picked two local not-for-profit or-

ganisations,” Ida said. “We needed to support our local notfor-profit organisations, so we decided to split the profits from the evening to both the Mareeba Golf Club and the Mareeba Animal Refuge, who both received $2,270 each.” But in any production by the Mareeba Theatre Group, the cast are not only the stars of the show. Plenty of local, hard working people volunteer their time to help enhance the viewing experience. “I’d not only like to pay tribute to the cast, but to all of our backstage crew,” she said.

Audiences listened intently during the first week of ‘Rural Debt and Drought’ taskforce meetings.
EMOTIONS have run high in regional Queensland, after the first of several meetings of the bi-partisan government ‘Rural Debt and Drought’ taskforce were held last week. Chaired by the Member for Mt Isa Robbie Katter (KAP state crossbencher), residents in several towns had an opportunity to listen and actively outline their concerns to members of the taskforce. Mr Katter said: “The meetings were very well attended. I wouldn’t say big crowds, but very well attended in the fact that it’s a quiet time of the year and people can be busy and preoccupied. “We’ve got a good cross section of people from all the towns we have been in, which included business owners,
pub owners, property owners and financial consultants. “The common theme is that there is a lot of pain out there. There are some big structural problems out in these major regional communities and they need some big solutions.” He added: "Practices like engineered defaults, foreclosures and the revaluing of properties during the drought have severely undercut the agricultural industry in the west – the taskforce is vital to addressing this issue." "These are viable businesses that desperately need a supportive financial structure through systems like Multi-peril insurance or a debt reconstruction facility.”

EXPRESS sPORT Bandits storm Atherton on the road Mareeba Bandits bowler Ricky Shave. By Justin Fris
Tyler Ius in action above and left, with his Queensland team jersey.
Ius peforms strongly on the national stage By Justin Fris
EXCITING footballer Tyler Ius has returned from a successful U/12 Pacific School Games with Queensland in Adelaide. Ius – a humble Mareeba product who is on the books of the FNQ Heat – plied his trade against a variety of opponents in several positions. In an extremely talented squad, Tyler was the only player selected from north of Rockhampton; and made his chance count. Queensland’s campaign began against Western Australia, which ended in a 2-1 defeat. They would bounce back quickly though, with consecutive 3-1 victories over the ACT and Victoria. Although suffering defeat against perennial power-
house, NSW, a smash and grab 1-0 win over the Northern Territory put the maroons back in the hunt. The lads were seconds away from receiving a silver medal (2nd) for the tournament, however a late equaliser from SA in their 2-2 draw spelt the end of that dream. Qld would end the tournament with a match against India, where they would romp to a 6-0 victory and sign off in style. For Tyler’s parents Peter and Joanne, it was a special experience to see their son compete with the most elite youth footballers in the country. Mr Ius said the Qld lads held their own skill-wise with some of the more fancied states, although he believes that greater scheduling of high intensity club fixtures would aid their development and progression.
THE Mareeba Bandits Cricket Club made a scintillating start to their two day fixture against Atherton at Morrow Park. Despite having several players unavailable for selection, the youthful Bandits ripped through the home side, who were dismissed for 151 off 54.4 overs. In reply, the visitors finished at 0/13, batting the remaining six overs of the day - which will strengthen their case for a potential outright victory. Bandits captain Brendan Payne won the toss and decided to send the home side into bat. He said the team were committed to pushing for an outright win and believed this method would provide an excellent opportunity. Low cloud cover and lingering rain hovered around the Tablelands for much of the day, but thankfully
Photo Peter Roy
play wasn’t disrupted. Reginald Wenham (50), Shaun Baty (23) and Matt Bradford (20) were the only Atherton batsmen to get starts, while the others succumbed quicker to the impressive bowling display. Newcomer Ricky Shave (4/41 off 21 overs) was the pick of Mareeba’s bowlers, but received excellent support from Ben Turner (1/6 off 2.4 overs), Brett Girgenti (1/26 off 6 overs), Damien Brko (0/17 off 4 overs) and Payne (3/12 off 8 overs). Payne was reflective about his sides display and said the side would benefit from a few inclusions ahead of Sunday. “The first 20 overs or so we could have bowled a bit better,” he said. “But after that, we really started to knuckle down. “If we are able to get the 151 and quickly declare shortly after that, hopefully we can rip through them in a session if all goes well.”
Interesting 2016 ahead for Gladiators and Roosters
By Justin Fris
THE Cairns District Rugby League recently released its 2016 draw – with mixed fortunes expected for both clubs. While the Atherton Roosters have a positive start to the season, the Mareeba Gladiators will face a tough initiation. Beginning with a home fixture against Edmonton, the Gladiators then face Tully (away) and Ivanhoes (home) back to back. Down the Kennedy Highway, the Roosters have a real opportunity to start the season 3-0, opening with Yarrabah (away), Kangaroos (home) and Mossman/Port Douglas (home). The true test of the Gladiators’ resolve for a final five spot will be learned in July, where
www.theexpressnewspaper.com.au
they will go through a horror four game stretch. Beginning on the weekend of July 16 and 17, the Gladiators face Tully (home), Edmonton (away), Innisfail (away) and Ivanhoes (away). Newly appointed coach Josh Stowers is bringing plenty of big game experience with him and will hope that this can carry through during the coalface of the season. The Roosters’ toughest part of the season will be earlier in the year – however as it stands – five of these six games will be at Roosters Stadium. Beginning with the ‘Tablelands Derby’ against Mareeba, the Roosters then face: Ivanhoes (home), Southern Suburbs (home), Brothers (home) Innisfail (home) and end with Tully (away).
Roosters coach Dean Howard will most likely see this period as extremely pivotal for his side. Despite the nature of the opponents, five of the matches are in a row at home – and will give the Roosters a fantastic opportunity to set an early pace. If in contention for a final five spot, the Gladiators will be forced to earn every win they get. Their final three matches are Yarrabah (home) Suburbs (away) and Brothers Cairns (home). Arguably, the Roosters have a more challenging finish, concluding with Brothers Cairns (home), Innisfail (away) and Tully (home). In 2016, there will be two ‘Tableland Derbies’, which will be held on the weekend of May 8 and June 18. The first match (held at Roosters Stadium)
will see the Roosters don a special heritage jersey – with all jerseys to be auctioned off after the final siren. Roosters senior official Darryl Day said that all matches held at Roosters Stadium were pencilled in for Saturday night, although their Round 20 home match against Brothers Cairns may revert to Friday night. The Northern Pride will also be heading to Roosters Stadium for a pre-season trial match against the Burleigh Bears – along with playing one of their INTRUST Super Cup fixtures in Ravenshoe. The season will kick off on the weekend of April 2 and 3, which means it will be held after the Easter school holidays.
