Annual festival set to roar

Caring for community

Dimbulah will be a hive of activity next weekend when the annual Lions Festival kicks off its festivities.

A huge night of entertainment is planned on Saturday, May 27th kicking off with the famous street parade at 5pm.

The festival Queen and King will be announced later that night followed by a massive fireworks display. Festival-goers will be dancing late into the night with a live band and bar open till late.

Food stands will represent the multi-cultural flavours of the region and the event is a fantastic opportunity for the local community to come together and celebrate.

Apprentice life has been made easier for 21 year old Kaitlyn Booth thanks to a bursary from Mareeba’s Granite Masonic Lodge.

Kaitlyn was judged the most deserving winner of the award which gives her $1000 a year until she is qualified.

“I saw the bursary advertised in The Express and thought I should go for it,” she said.

Kaitlyn is a second year plumbing apprentice based in Mareeba and one of the only girls locally training in the maledominated trade.

“I like to do hands on things

and my dad is a plumber so I thought I would get in to it as well,” said Kaitlyn.

“The bursary is going to really help with tools and other stuff I’ll need.”

Lodge master Carl Richardson previously said there were too few bursaries available for tradespeople as opposed to those pursuing academic careers.

“Australia as a whole badly needs tradesmen,” he said.

“An apprentice has a very good chance of staying in Mareeba and he might even keep going and start up his own business here.”

For people caring for those with dementia, having a day of respite is about more than just getting a break.

Knowing that loved ones struggling with mental health issues are being looked after in a nurturing environment for just one or two days a week is vital.

“They can be full on and the carers really need a break,” said Marita Roberts a Senior Support Worker at St John’s Community Care.

St John’s is just one of two long day respite care centres in Mareeba. It only launched a year ago but has quickly gained a reputation for being a hive of activity.

“We want to get them interactive,” explained Marita. “We do arts and crafts, Tai Chi, singing. They love it.”

Esad Bajramovic is a full time carer to his mum Esma, 78, who stays at the centre three times a week. Esma has been living with dementia for two years.

“She absolutely loves it there,” said Mary, Esad’s wife.

“When she sees the bus coming in the mornings she runs out to it. She can’t wait to get there.”

The centre is open three days a week and is currently home to 16 residents that have issues ranging from dementia to cognitive problems. A young disability group also use the centre.

“We try to do things differently,” said Marita. “We have had dementia training and through that we were encouraged to offer them activities to give them a feeling of self worth. They go home from here feeling like they are valued and feeling good about themselves.”

The centre runs a bus service to Cairns monthly for clients that want to shop or attend appointments.

Big party as three Mareeba residents turn 103

Crocodiles presenting a threat to human life will be culled under an LNP government.

Crocs will be culled Crocodiles posing a threat to human lives in Far North Queensland will be euthanised under an LNP government.

The bold policy statement was released this week in response to pressure from locals concerned about the rising numbers of saltwater crocodiles in our region.

Shadow Environment Minister Dr Christian Rowan said the LNP had listened to the concerns of Far North Queenslanders.

“This is a commonsense approach that puts the interests of humans ahead of crocodiles,” he said.

“The LNP understands that in some circumstances safe and quick capture is not practicable, when crocodiles venture near beaches, boat ramps or open water.”

In the past two months one man has been killed,

another injured and a pet dog taken by crocodiles in separate incidents across the Far North.

Dr Rowan said the plan was centred on acting swiftly and decisively when crocodiles posed a risk.

“Under the LNP, locals and domestic and international visitors will know that their personal safety matters,” he said.

“We will provide our trained rangers with all the tools they need to protect people at popular beaches, swimming holes, boat ramps and marinas.”

The policy will also focus on managing the harvesting of crocodile eggs in areas where crocodile populations are rising. Currently Far North Queensland crocodile farms have to import eggs from the Northern Territory.

“It beggars belief,” said Dr Rowan of the current laws which mean crocs here are free to breed excessively.

“Under an LNP Nicholls Government, crocodile egg harvesting will be regulated as it is in the Northern Territory as a form of population control.

“While protecting crocodile habitats, farmers and landholders who harvest the eggs will potentially be provided with a commercial return.”

Dr Rowan said the plan was centred on acting swiftly and decisively when crocodiles posed a risk.

The policy will come into place if the LNP successfully win the next election on July 2.

Turning 103 is a huge milestone for anyone but when you can celebrate the same birthday with three close friends, the achievement is all the more poignant.

May Smiler, Flo Boundy and James Maxwell are all turning 103 within a few days of each other – and they all reside in neighbouring rooms at the Mareeba Garden Settlement.

Last Friday the facility held a huge birthday party to honour the trio, with a cake kindly donated by Daphne Treen and flowers donated by Floral Magic. Local councillors Angela Toppin, Mary Graham and Lenore Whyatt gave a speech to congratulate the centenarians, wishing them many happy returns on behalf of Mareeba Shire Council.

A fourth resident, Daisy Archer was also honoured with well wishes at the event as she will be turning 106 in June – making her the oldest resident that Mareeba Garden Settlement has ever had.

Flo, James and May reside in rooms next to each other on the same wing of the facility.

May, from Kowanyama, was 103 on May 10.

Flo, from Gordonvale, was 103 on May 16 and James, originally from Victoria, will be 103 on May 18.

A band was on hand to provide music to the birthday boy and girls who were surrounded by scores of family and friends.

Flo, James and May were all born in May 1914 – a few months before the start of World War I.

The firies in Mareeba are fundraising hard for their friend Coral Smith who is battling aggressive stomach cancer.

It’s all about Coral Taking a break from fighting fires, but not from helping people, will be team Blazers.

The Queensland Fire and Emergency Services team are taking part in the Wheelbarrow Race this weekend to raise funds for the Coral Smith charity. Coral is an administration assistant at the

Mareeba Police District Office and is currently battling stage 4 stomach cancer.

“Coral is a long term staff member and has been our first point of contact at the police for years,” said team leader Jared Hohns. “She is a fabulous person and has a fighting spirit to match.”

The Blazers are hoping to raise $5,000 for Coral and are already over halfway there with $3,000 in the kitty.

The Fit Bucks are back in the game

From butcher to Bolt Lennon Colclough, 32, is running solo this year for the first time after winning the duo category three years in a row with a mate.

The butcher, who works at Russo’s Quality Meats in Mareeba, lives in Dimbulah and is being sponsored by the Junction Hotel.

The Junction Hotel first sponsored a team called the Junction Jokers, who the following year presented as ‘Return of the Joker’. Lennon and his mate were called the Lonely Jokers and now he is continuing the theme by running under the name ‘Return of the Joker’.

A keen cyclist, Lennon is used to keeping fit and has been smashing out 200kms a week in a bid to go the distance this weekend.

He will be supported by his dad and says he will be walking and running the race and just ‘hopes to make it’.

Back after a two-year hiatus are the Fit Bucks, keen to return to the winning podium.

The 10-man team was unbeatable in the 2012, 2013 and 2014 races but took a break for a few years while team leader Charlton Best launched a new business.

Back to tackle the new format and take on recent champions, Charlton said he was ‘quietly confident’.

“We know the standard has improved so we’ve been training hard,” he said.

“We love the idea of the race finishing in Mareeba so really wanted to get involved again. It’s going to be great to get the community involved.”

“Return of the Joker” – Lennon Colclough will swap his butcher knives for running shoes and a wheelbarrow this weekend as he competes as a solo runner in the Great Wheelbarrow Race.

Reversing the direction of the race a huge boost Over $200,000 was raised last year at the Great Wheelbarrow Race and organisers are hoping even more can be pulled together this year, especially as the new format is proving to be so popular.

For the first time in the race’s 14 year history, it will begin in Chillagoe this Friday, May 19 and end in Mareeba on Sunday, May 21.

This means that more spectators and supporters than ever before will line the streets to cheer the runners home at the end of their 140km ordeal.

“After careful consideration and community consultation with key stakeholders, the decision was made to revive and refresh the signature event,” Committee Chair Nipper Brown said previously.

Chillagoe to Mareeba

Old and new teams have signed up for this year’s competition with large sums of money already pouring in for nominated charities. Some of the organisations on the receiving end include Micks Mission, Aussie Farmers Foundation, Cancer Council, MS Queensland, Golden Octopus Foundation, FNQ Cerebral Palsy Support, Friends of the Mareeba Hospital, Indie Rose Foundation, Just for Josh, SES, The Caddy Family, Coral Smith, IFYS Foster Care and many more.

The race will finish at the Mareeba International Club on Sunday morning with teams expected from 10am.

Runners will spend Friday night in Almaden and Saturday night in Dimbulah with night time entertainment for all.

School parking safety concerns Contrary to Darryl Drury’s comments in The Express (10 May 2017) Council has proactively been involved in a collaborative engagement process regarding safety concerns with parking on Catherine Street, Tolga including with local member Shane Knuth MP. Following advice from the Department of Education and Training, a SafeST committee was formed including representatives from Tolga State School, residents, Queensland Police Service, Department of Transport and Main Roads, and Tablelands Regional Council to identify potential solutions to parking around Tolga State School.

As part of that process some changes have been made to parking on Catherine Street, with support through the school community, including it now only being used as a drop off and pick up area for Prep children and not having school parking on the residential side of the street.

In addition, Council has made a commitment to install revised signage and marking designated car parks to further improve Main Street parking as endorsed by the SafeST committee within this financial year’s budget. This includes moving the bus zone further up Main Street, providing an extended loading zone in front of the main school entrance and designated car parks on the residential and business side of the street.

TRC will monitor the effectiveness of signage installation.

Mr Drury needs to be mindful that Divisional Councillor Bronwyn Voyce shows ongoing leadership regarding safety concerns. She instigated the review of Catherine Street parking options and liaises with the Principal and our workforce as part of this process. Our CEO, General Manager Infrastructure Services, Council Officers and I have all attended SafeST meetings at different times and we will continue to ensure that TRC is represented at any future meetings.

As part of an engagement process, all views are taken into consideration. Changing Catherine Street into a oneway street is not the preferred solution for many residents and therefore alternative solutions are being implemented

and trialled to address the peak time of approximately 20 minutes each school day afternoon.

Mr Drury is entitled to his opinion, however as a Council it is our responsibility to take into account the views of all impacted stakeholders and make decisions in the best interest of the broader community.

Senseless destruction Shame on all those responsible for the senseless destruction of so many beautiful old trees at Basalt Gully.

For no doubt the flying foxes will be back, the trees wont.

All that’s left is an ugly sight of stumps everywhere and the mess that been created.

An explanation from the council is still forthcoming, but as someone said “don’t hold your breath.” As a long-time resident of Stewart Street I have been waling the pathway almost every day for exercise and out dog, but now with so many trees gone we’ll be walking in the hot sun.

I can assure you I am not alone in feeling the disgust with what’s been allowed to take place. Also for those who care the frog mouth owls will need to find another tree to suit their camouflage.

Kur-World concerns Did anyone else receive a survey pamphlet from KUR-World in their mail this week?

I did a bit of research on this KUR-World development and it seems that if this does go ahead, Mareeba ratepayers will be footing the bill for the next 20 years.

KUR-World will bring another 4,000 people to live just outside Kuranda at Myola. There are only 368 people in Myola now.

Mareeba ratepayers will have to come up with water, sewerage, roads, footpath infrastructure and everything you

could think of. This town is only just getting over de-amalgamation costs. We don’t need more costs.

I am going to fill in their survey and vote very high concerns every question. Check it out for yourself.

Public safety paramount Positive action on public safety concerns about the escalating numbers of crocs in the Mareeba area was well overdue.

It was reassuring to see that MPs Shane Knuth and Robbie Katter of Katter’s Australian Party took the matter seriously and organized a Public Meeting at the Mareeba Bowls Club on Wednesday April 12, 2017.

The public meeting was very well attended by locals and the media and two MSC Councillors also attended. To this point locals in the region were not being taken seriously by the State Government and the laws protecting crocodiles were firmly in place.

It’s a very serious issue indeed when normally strong, work toughened farmers break under the stress and are reduced to tears when they stand up to talk about not being safe in their work environment nor being able to ensure their children’s safety to play in their own back yards due to the safety concerns associated with free roaming crocodiles living in waterways and cane paddocks around Two Mile Creek.

Cattle producers also spoke of their stock losses due to crocs, and tourism operators concerned about how their business are being negatively impacted upon due to increasing numbers of crocodiles.

Full credit for this public meeting and ensuing changes to the State Governments crocodile management plan must be attributed to Katter’s Australia Party MPs Shane Knuth and Robbie Katter and Federal Member Bob Katter who continue to fight for regional Queenslanders.

Dedication to fundraising TWELVE year old Alexis Evans (pictured) is her Pony Club’s entrant for the Personality and Fundraising Quest and is taking the role very seriously.

The keen horse rider is a member of Malanda Pony Club and together with fellow club members used Mother’s Day to help with her fundraising by selling Floral Arrangements on Saturday morning.

The beautiful arrangements were the work of friends and club members.

Alexis has wasted no time in her fundraising efforts organising a Dressage and Hack Day Competition on 20 and 21 May at the Pony Club’s undercover arena. This two day competition caters for beginners to experienced riders. The both programs are a great opportunity for horse and rider to prepare for the local show circuit especially our Malanda show which is approximately six weeks away. Spectators are welcome to watch.

On the Sunday May 28, Alexis will be joining together with the Mareeba Pony Club Zone 18 entrant Natalie White to put on a ‘Take Your Horse to Lunch’ Fundraising Trail Ride. They will be riding from Tolga to Kairi for a BBQ lunch and then returning to Tolga. The ride is open to anyone that would like to have a date with their horse and other horsey riders.

Alexis is a dedicated junior member of the Malanda Horse and Pony Club and volunteers many hours to fundraising and working bees to assist in upgrading the club’s facilities and equipment. The funds raised during her quest will be used to help upgrade the clubs toilet amenities facility.

The Malanda Horse and pony club will be hosting the Annual Zone 18 Gymkhana and Quest judging at our grounds located at the Malanda Showgrounds on the 28/29 October 2017.

Borzi recognised by service to health Following the bi-monthly COAG Mareeba Hospital committee meeting on Wednesday May 10 2017, former Chairman of the COAG committee Mick Borzi AM OBE was formally recognized for his ongoing dedication to community Health Services in the region.

As a volunteer, Mick chaired the COAG committee for almost a decade since it’s inception in 2006 and stepped down from the position late last year. Even after his retirement from public life Mick has continued to inspire others.

Now held over three days from Wednesday May 24 to Friday May 26 at the Mareeba Rodeo Grounds, the biennial event is the region’s largest and most comprehensive display of agricultural equipment and associated services and industries.

Field Days in 2015 saw more than 18,000 people file through the gate, buoyed by this success the committee made the decision to

extend what’s on offer in 2017 from two days, to now three.

2017 will see more than 300 different exhibitors on display at the sold out event, with the Field Days committee confident it will be returned in spades by numbers through the gate.

The event will offer more than just exhibitor sites – there’s more than 30 separate market stalls, cattle stalls and numerous inventor sites, the latter of which will showcase the

region’s innovative products related to the agricultural industry.

A key feature will be the “Feed Your Future” industry to student agricultural and natural science career discovery forum.

One of the crowd favourites – the Rotary John Deere Tractor Pull and Vintage Static Tractor Display – returns this year, with more than 30 tractors from across regional Queensland.

And for the first time ever, a garden tractor

pulling demonstration has been added, which is sure to generate even more interest.

The Queensland Police Service and other emergency services will do a daily mock rescue.

There will also be daily first aid demonstrations and the importance of good physical and mental health will also be an important component at the Field Days this year.

Inventor’s Contest to bring out best innovators

PRODUCTS designed and made by locals will once again showcase the region’s best innovators at Rotary FNQ Field Days.

Sponsored by the North Queensland Register, the Inventor’s Contest will feature local inventors showcasing a rage of products relevant to the agricultural industry.

Inventor’s Contest organiser John Hardy said the contest had come a long way at Field Days since the early 1990s.

“Over the years, I’ve seen it go from simple things that people have built with a welder to some pretty innovative and high tech devices,” he said.

“We’re starting to see drones making inroads and GPS devices. There’s a whole lot of electronic gear used as harvesting aides or in packing sheds.”

2015 winner of the Inventor’s Contest for inventions over $1000 retail, Townsville man Trent Small, impressed judges with his solar-powered Portable Power Supply (PPS) housed in an esky.

Mr Hardy said the PPS had since gone on to be used in cyclone-stricken areas like Fiji.

Original Rescue Swag founder Tracey Beikoff said her participation in Field Days’ 2013 Inventor’s Contest gave her the perfect launch platform for her product.

“What I love about the contest is the camaraderie between people and the networks that you make,” she said.

“It’s years of work. That’s why it’s so important to do things like the Inventor’s Contest where you get feedback from people.

“The commitment that’s required to drive a product like mine to market is massive and you don’t have a concept of that when you first start.”

Mrs Beikoff said feedback from judges at the Inventor’s Contest was vital to being able to refine a product and make it successful.

“At the end of the day, you save a lot of time and money because of that feedback right at the start,” she said.

“You’ve got to be focused, very clear about your vision and realistic about your resources.”

Mrs Beikoff is hoping the Rescue Swag, which is now sold in both Australia and the United States, could also help villagers in remote parts of Papua New Guinea under a crowdfunded charity program run by the Cairns-based Reef and Rainforest Research Centre (RRRC).

“There are people living in absolute poverty and terrible conditions,” she said.

“We’re teaming together with RRRC to give each local ranger up there a Rescue Swag.

“We’ve already done a trial, which went exceptionally well and we’ve added birthing kits to the Rescue Swag as well.

“If this can make a difference, that’s pretty awesome.”

While not a requirement of the contest, it is the responsibility of aspiring inventors to have their inventions registered with the Australian Patent Office.

First place in the contest’s Over $1000 retail category is $500 donated by the North Queensland Register. First place in the contest’s Under $1000 retail category is also $500, donated by Rotary FNQ Field Days. $500 will also be awarded to the Overall Field Winner, donated by Rotary FNQ Field Days.

All winners will receive trophies provided by Rotary FNQ Field Days.

Bigger and better tractor pull HORSEPOWER, noise and a lot of fun is set to excite the crowds once again at this year’s Rotary John Deere Tractor Pull.

The event, held at every Rotary FNQ Field Days since 2013, is back with an even bigger bang with the addition of Rotary Garden Tractor Pulling Display.

More than 30 tractors from across regional Queensland will put pedal to the metal as they go head-to-head in the popular Field Days attraction.

The Tractor Pull involves either a “vintage” or “classic tractor” pulling a sled along a 120m track, sure to get hearts racing.

Engine capacity categories have been boosted for Field Days in 2017, with tractors competing in categories ranging from 20 horsepower right up to 200 horsepower and potentially even higher, depending on

numbers.

All tractors competing must be two-wheel-drive and at least 40 years old.

Agricultural equipment supplier Honeycombes will supply the “pull-back tractor” for the event, which will pull the sled back to the start of the 120m track once each competing tractor has had a run.

Making its debut at Field Days this year, the Garden Tractor Pulling Display is an exciting addition to the main event.

Essentially modified ride-on lawn mowers with the deck removed, garden tractors under 15hp and over 15hp will participate in

the demonstration.

As with the Tractor Pull, the Garden Tractor Pulling Display will also feature its own sled to pull.

The whole event is a truly familyorientated affair, promising loads of fun for

mum, dad and the kids – an attraction not to be missed..

The Rotary John Deere Tractor Pull and Rotary Garden Tractor Pulling Display will be held twice daily over three days at the Field Days.

Vintage display of mechanical history A BLAST from the past and a curiosity to see how the machines of yesteryear once operated on the farm is set to delight visitors to this year’s Vintage Static Tractor and Engine Display at Rotary FNQ Field Days.

Far from the modern tractor displays featuring air-conditioned cabs, power steering, variable speed transmissions and GPS, the FNQ Field Days will also feature several vintage tractor and stationary engine displays.

Visitors will be entertained with stories of days gone by on the farm, as the ladies there recall cold mornings when they cranked their milking machine motor until blisters appeared on their hands, or when the crank handle slipped causing many a skinned knuckle.

You can also hear the men talk of “the good old days”, making comparisons of tractors between then and now. Their vintage warhorses had no big horsepower engines or airconditioning and the dust filters were the hairs in their noses. Steering was assisted by strong arms and the GPS was two bloodshot eyes.

Also not to be missed is the display of vintage tractors and other relics by Herberton’s Historic Village.

Enthusiasts are encouraged to

view the “Waterloo Boy” stationary engine being demonstrated. The original “Waterloo Boy” kerosene-powered tractor was the forefather to what is now John Deere.

You can also join in conversation with exhibitors from the Tablelands, Burdekin, Townsville, Bowen and Mackay at the stationery engine compound.

Vintage tractors from manufacturers such as John Deere, Chamberlain, International, Fordson and Fiat will be on display, while stationary engines from Ruston-Hornsby, Rider, Blackstone, Petter, Austral and the famous kerosene-powered Waterloo Boy is sure to fascinate machinery enthusiasts.

The engines themselves are renowned for their simplicity, operating without the assistance of a computer, air cleaner, or forced oil lubrication in the most extreme conditions.

Veteran exhibitors like Alf Shand from the Burdekin, Chillagoe’s Tony Little, Wondecla man Toby Atkinson and Ian Williams from Townsville will also make their return to Field Days this year.

Make sure you stop by and immerse yourself in a world of rich, mechanical history.

Heaps of parking and heaps of food FIELD Days will have no shortage of parking or food at this year’s three day event.

In addition to parking offered inside the Mareeba Rodeo Grounds, there will also now be “overflow parking” across the road from the grounds in anticipation for a bumper crowd.

The Rotary FNQ Field Days committee has taken a different approach to prize incentives this year, with the art union giving way for a daily prize draw.

Give your batteries maximum performance and longer life

SULPHATION build-up is a major problem with lead acid and calcium acid batteries.

That’s why the Recharge Battery Conditioning Program can as much as double battery life, according to Gerard Anselmi of Recharge Battery Revitalizer and Conditioner.

As batteries age, more and more of the sulphur ions in the sulphuric acid electrolyte that should be holding the electrons, or charge, build up on the internal lead plates as lead sulphate or sulphation. This build-up does two things. Firstly, it reduces the battery’s charge holding capacity by removing the sulphur ions from the electrolyte and secondly, it acts like rust on steel and corrodes the lead until the plates collapse and cause premature battery failure.

“Every battery you buy has already started to sulphate and they just get worse until they die,” said Mr Anselmi.

A Recharge treatment will dissolve the lead sulphate buildup, turning those sulphur ions back into sulphuric acid-holding electrons.

“We are chemically reversing the sulphation build-up process, one chemical reaction to counter another,” Mr Anselmi said.

“Once treated, a battery is essentially running at full capacity, provided the lead plates are still in good condition – prevention is the key. Treat batteries early and they go stronger for longer.

“Dead batteries are dead so forget about them.”

To ensure a long battery life, treat them early and repeat every two to three years for starting batteries or every three to four years for bigger traction batteries like independent power supplies, fork lifts, golf carts and scissor hoists.

Sealed batteries can also be treated by drilling into each cell, treating and resealing with silicone, sika-flex or a plastic bung.

Recharge is also great for deep cycle batteries used by forklifts, golf carts, scissor hoists and lighting system batteries.

Hundreds rev up for motocross MORE than 100 riders descended on Mareeba last weekend for Round 2 of the Tropical North Queensland MX series, with riders came from Weipa in the North to Charters Towers in the South.

Held at the Mareeba Motocross Club, riders ranged from PeeWee 50cc class all the way through to Veterans. The TNQ series is a qualifier for the QLD

Titles to be held later this year. The top 7 riders from each class will qualify for the Titles.

It was a great weekend of racing on both Saturday and Sunday, with only a few minor injuries.

In a very even contest with both sides enjoying some good moments throughout the match, but the young Bulls showed the clubs never say die attitude and Zak Bivak scored the winner for the home side in the 91st minute to claim a 1-0 win.

The win now moves the side into the top six.

The Bulls ladies side travelled down to JCU on Saturday to take on the bottom of ladder Strikers and in a disappointing afternoon for the ladies, went down 3-1, in match where the Bulls were expected to win easily.

This weekend the action heats up in the FNQ Premier league with the Mareeba Bulls travelling down to Cairns to take on the Stratford Dolphins.

DARREN’S STORY He was a former high profile ABC sports broadcaster on the Gold Coast before he was cut down by a series of heart attacks which led to a heart transplant.
