Small town comes alive for Festival

Gypsy Busato (centre) was crowned Queen on Saturday night, Miss Personality and Charity Princess was Kaysie Butler (left) and Mary Smith was crowned festival Princess (right).

Dimbulah Lions Festival 2017 went off with a bang By Rebecca Wallis Fireworks, fun and festivities were looming large at this year’s Dimbulah Lions Festival. Thousands turned up to watch the street parade, sample the eclectic food and see who would be crowned Queen. “I was a bit worried initially be-

cause the month of may was just jam packed with festivities, from the Northern Nats, the Wheelbarrow Race and three days of the Field Days,” said Lions president Eddie Toffanello. “I was a little bit concerned we weren’t going to get such a crowd but the enormity of the crowd that turned up this year was bigger and better than last year I think according to some re-

7

ports. It was great.” One of the highlights of the festival are the food stalls showcasing cuisines from all over the world from Italy, Spain, Croatia, the Phillipines, Holland and Switzerland. “This year we hit the nail on the head – we had taste, we had quantity and all our food stall suppliers were so happy,” said Mr Toffanello.

“And most of them sold out. One stall has been cooking gnocchi and in an hour he sold out - he sold about 30kg of gnocchi in that time! Next year he said he’d have to bring 60kg.” The wood choppers were a huge hit with the crowds. Kenny the Woodchopper has been coming to the festival for over 10 years and this year brought with him 13 wood choppers who put

on an exciting display of wood chopping skill and talent. Huge anticipation surrounded the crowning of the Queens and princesses with the ultimate title going to Gypsy Busato. Miss Personality and Charity Princess went to Kaysie Butler and Mary Smith was crowned the festival Princess. Continued P21

Youth ‘disengagement’ to blame for anti-social behaviour Police are appealing for public assistance to locate a 16-year-old girl reported missing on May 12 from the Atherton area. The girl (pictured) was last seen on May 2 and police hold concerns for her welfare because she has not been heard from since. It is possible the missing girl has travelled to Cairns. She is described as Aboriginal in appearance, around 180cm tall with a solid build, long black curly hair and brown eyes. Anyone who may have seen the girl or know her whereabouts is urged to contact Policelink on 131 444 or Crime Stoppers on 1800 333 000.

Birds left to rot after slingshot rampage By Rebecca Wallis An Indigenous social worker has spoken up about what she calls the ‘disengagement’ of youths on her street, which lead to dead birds hanging in trees outside her house after they were killed with slingshots. Isobelle Anderson has lived on Ward Street, Mareeba, for 10 years, but she says the level of anti-social behaviour caused by

kids who should be at school, is currently the worst it has ever been. “They’re bored,” she said. “They should be at school. Why aren’t they? They’ve got slingshots and they’ve been walking up and down the street all week killing birds for fun.” Mrs Anderson, who works with native titles, found a dead Ibis in the tree outside her house and on her front lawn.

She also had pebbles thrown at her roller door and fears there will be revenge attacks if she tells them to move on. “It’s a build up because the street is getting bad,” she said. “There’s a high rate of comings and going - some families only live here for a short time before they move on again,” she said. “I think that’s got a lot to do with it. The adults are setting the

example - there’s no stability for the kids.” Mrs Anderson also said there are multiple stray dogs that wander the street eating the dead birds. After contacting Mareeba Shire Council, Mrs Anderson was given advice on how to remove the birds safely and hygienically. The police cautioned the boys.

Shed from Vietnam War gets go ahead in Tolga

JOURNALIST Rebecca Wallis

Tolga Historical Society members finally got the news they have been waiting for last week when Tablelands Regional Councillors agreed in principal to the construction of their Vietnam War vintage building. Three years ago the society were given an old dormitory from the war which has been sitting in crates ever since.

After applying for permission to erect the building alongside the current museum on the Kennedy Highway, the Council have worked closely with society members to come up with a suitable plan. At last week’s meeting they finally got the all clear to go ahead with construction. “This is something that is re-

ally exciting,” said Tablelands Regional Councillor Bronwyn Voyce. “It’s something they have aspired to do but without the funding it wouldn’t have happened so by diverting funding we have really brought this project forward by a number of years.” The society’s president Rob Fuller said the new building

will be mainly used to showcase items from the war. “We’ve got tons of stuff in my shed and other peoples’ sheds. We’ve got people trying to give us items all the time but up until now we’ve had nowhere to put it,” he said. “The idea is to keep the history alive and pass it on to the next generation. “ The 25x7.5m shed is hoped

to be erected by the end of the year and will be situated next to the museum on the Mareeba side. “I think it will really enhance the region,” said Cr Voyce. “It’s a really great outcome for the community. I’m really excited to see them grow and become a great destination for the area.”

Atherton mum wins $25,000 on scratchie

NBN nightmare

Glenys Pilat had to spend seven weeks without any internet while waiting to be connected to the National Broadband Network.

By Rebecca Wallis It’s a story many people across the Tablelands can relate to - the excitement of connecting to the National Broadband Network (NBN) short lived as installation becomes a nightmare. Glenys Pilat is just one of many phone and internet users in the region who contacted their supplier – Telstra – and asked to make the switch. But the Mareeba mum-oftwo teenage girls had to wait months for it to happen, including spending seven weeks without any internet servicing her house at all. Worse still, she was inaccurately told she would need a 3m tower on her roof and was forced to pay for both the new NBN service and her old ADSL service concurrently until Telstra and the NBN installer worked out what to do.

Taking the slow route to a faster internet connection “The experience of organising this and managing without internet service during this period was an absolute nightmare,” said Mrs Pilat. “And very frustrating, time consuming, expensive and inconvenient.” The debacle continued when Mrs Pilat found out that Telstra had cancelled her 10 year old email address with no prior notice or explanation. “I’ve been told it is not possible for it to be retrieved and Telstra can’t explain why it was cancelled or deleted,” explained Mrs Pilat.

“We have used this home email address for about the last 10 years. It’s been another time consuming and inconvenient process to inform personal and business contacts of the change in email address. We have also lost the old email records.” On May 10 a different technician arrived at Glenys’ house to install the 3m tower she was told she needed – only to be informed that a strong signal could be found without it. “I believe these problems came about because at no time was I able to speak to one person who had an overview of the

entire installation and transitioning process,” she said. “The process has been broken up and each section is contracted and then further subcontracted so no one has oversight of all the steps or of the overall progress.” NBN fixed wireless services are currently available to around 2,000 premises in the Mareeba region. Fixed line construction is expected to start on 4100 premises in Mareeba in the first half of next year. The NBN website has recently been updated to provide new information and steps to connect to the network, includ-

ing which questions to ask their retailer when connecting. Since being contacted by The Express, Telstra has reimbursed Mrs Pilat. “We apologise to the customer for the delay she has experienced in connecting to the NBN,” said Telstra area general manager Rachel Cliffe. “We asked an NBN Co technician to visit the customer and the issue was resolved on 10 May. The customer is now connected and we are working through billing issues.”

A young mum from the Atherton region is a step closer to buying her first home after scratching the top prize of $25,000 on a $2 Instant Scratch-Its game. The overjoyed woman told a Golden Casket official she received several Instant ScratchIts tickets as a Mother’s Day gift, but initially didn’t think she had won anything. “I scratched this one ticket but didn’t think I’d won so started scratching another ticket I’d received. But then I looked back and checked it again and saw I had won $25,000!” she explained. “I couldn’t believe it! $25,000! I was more than happy with that! “It pays to double check your tickets!” The woman, who wishes to remain anonymous, said the windfall was sitting in the bank and would help her buy her first home. “With this win I’m closer to having the deposit for my first home.” The winning Instant Scratch-Its ticket was purchased from Tolga Newsagency. Owner Daniel Schuldt said the outlet was celebrating selling its first top prize winning Instant Scratch-Its ticket. “We’ve sold a few division one winning Gold Lotto tickets and lots of winning Instant Scratch-Its tickets, but this is the first time we’ve sold a top prize winning Instant ScratchIts,” he said.

Bikies generous surprise donation Painful condition made easier thanks to bike club By Rebecca Wallis NINE weeks ago, Kairi school student Ryan Moss was a healthy and happy 10 year old. But after dislocating his shoulder in a fall, he developed a relatively unheard of condition called Complex Regional Pain Syndrome (CRPS). The condition is a neurological syndrome that sends signals to the nerve endings causing excruciating pain. “It’s so scary,” said Cherie, Ryan’s mum. “It’s one of the worst things I’ve had to experience as a mum – watching him go through

this.” Ryan now suffers from debilitating pain through his arm and leg and has been wheelchair bound for three weeks. There is no known cure – only the pain can be managed with medication and physiotherapy. Cherie has become his full time carer. It’s been an emotionally and financially stressful time for the

family, which is why a surprise donation from the local Red Dirt Bike Club has been so welcomed. “They contacted us out of the blue,” said Cherie. “They asked us to pop out to the club and then they surprised us with a $250 donation.” Cherie said the money has been a “huge help” going to-

wards a walker, special pedals for rehabilitation and some physiotherapy. “They have got hearts of gold,” Cherie said of the donation. “We’d like to send a huge thanks to them.” Ryan is now hoping to raise awareness of the condition to help people understand it more.

mum’s 72ers helping Kyle and his family Mareeba battle with cancer A Mareeba mum battling cancer for the second time will have the financial stress of treatment lifted slightly from her shoulders thanks to the town’s community. Nearly $20,000 has been raised so far for Paula McDonald who is currently in Brisbane after a shock diagnoses of liver cancer a few weeks ago. Paula is a huge figure in the local community thanks to her involvement as a coach at Mareeba Gymnastics Club. A Go Fund Me page launched early last week has already raised $13,000

while a raffle planned to be drawn next month is aiming to raise a further $10,000. Top prizes such as a signed Cowboys jersey, tickets for a Sunlover cruise, a Crystal Caves pass and jewellery are all up for grabs in the raffle which will be selling tickets for $2 each via businesses around town. “She is inspirational to the kids,” said Jenna Payne who is organising the raffle. “They love her.” Donate via the Go Fund Me page – Paula’s Battle for Life or buy a raffle ticket from The Express.

$20,000 raised for sick baby Winners of the over 35s category in last week’s Wheelbarrow Race, the 72ers with baby Kyle Morgan and his family.

ONE of the teams from the Great Wheelbarrow Race has managed to raise over $20,000 for a sick Mareeba baby. Kyle Morgan was born on Australia Day this year but soon after was found to be suffering from multiple conditions including intestinal, vertebral and rib malfor-

mations. He had his first surgery in Townsville at just over a day old. The little fighter has a long road ahead with many more surgeries to come, meaning he will need lengthy stays in Townsville and Brisbane with mum Crystal, dad Grant and his two year old brother.

Rachael Morgan was part of the team ‘72ers’ who came first in the over 35 category. “It is very hard to believe that a baby has to endure so much,” she said. “This is why we are raising funds to help ease the financial burden upon this young local Mareeba family, so they can concen-

TRC plans to be more ‘proactive’ Tablelands Regional Council CEO Hurriyet Babacan says the launch of the new Corporate Plan is the start of a new era for the council which plans to be more ‘proactive’ to the regions needs. The council is currently working under the 2015/19 Corporate Plan but it was decided it needed a more ‘visionary’ approach after the instalment of the new CEO and councillors last year. The 2017/2021 Corporate Plan was submitted

to council for approval at last week’s monthly meeting. It sets the strategic direction of council for the next five years. “We have traditionally been a reactive council,” said Mrs Babacan. “But now we need to look at how we can become a proactive council and get on the front foot of issues affection our region. “We want to have a future that is secure - we want to have a visionary approach to infrastructure

and how we run as a council.” Mayor Joe Paronella said there were “exciting times ahead” thanks to the new plan which Councillor Bronwyn Voyce claimed was “a vision that’s been put into a concise document.” “I’m very excited about the plan,” she said. “Our council is only as good as our region. This is all about how we can enhance it and develop it.”

18,000 made the trip to the FNQ Field Days Spread over three days for the first time in its history, the Rotary FNQ Field Days has again proved to be a massive success with 18,000 people passing through the gates. The action-packed event delighted visitors and exhibitors alike, with overwhelmingly positive feedback given to organisers. Field Days committee chair Pauline Spackman the turnout was sensational. “The cars just kept coming,” she said.

With machinery and agricultural displays, Police and Emergency Services Rescue demonstrations, cattle and goat displays, Men’s Health Education and much more, there was no shortage of things for visitors to see and do. Mrs Spackman said day three of Field Days had a calmer vibe about it, as visitors took their time viewing what was on offer. “It seemed really relaxed and enjoyable,” she said. “I had a couple of people that I know call past and I asked how their experience

was. They said it was lovely.” Mrs Spackman said an exhibitor survey would help the Field Days committee decide if the biennial event will be held over two or three days in 2019. But anecdotal feedback had been overwhelmingly positive. “I’ve been walking around and speaking with exhibitors and I haven’t had one person give me a negative comment,” she said. “Most of them are ecstatic.” Seeing visitors walk around with “big shopping bags” was the

highlight of today for Mrs Spackman, who was thrilled that people saw real value in Field Days. “That means people are out there buying things and a couple of times, the queue waiting to get some money out was a few people deep so that’s a great indicator,” she said. “This is all about our exhibitors and if they’re getting customers through the door, that’s great. Mareeba Tyrepower, MSF Sugar and Mareeba Mazda are the major sponsors of the Field Days.

Female farmer’s entrepreneurial spirit FARMING is in Tara Gauci’s blood. The 26-year-old Mutchilba woman may be one of the region’s few female farmers, but she is kicking some serious butt in a male-dominated industry. While running the family farm might sound daunting enough, Ms Gauci also owns JAT Plastics, manufacturing innovative plastic crates which can carry several different types of produce. “Anybody can be a farmer. Don’t let people say that you can’t do it because you’re a girl,” she said. “If you’ve got good produce, you’re going to sell it regardless. “I’ve grown up on the family farm and I’ve seen how hard my dad’s worked and I want to continue that legacy.” Ms Gauci, who farms lychees, longans and limes with her father and brother, bought what was then JW Plastics about two-and-a-half years ago. “It was security for us because for longans you can only use plastic crates, so we used to have to import the crates,” she said. “It was a very big cost and you had to import the crates before you even knew how much fruit you had.” The entrepreneurial woman turned what was a struggling businesses into a booming venture,

Mutchilba farmer and JAT Plastics owner Tara Gauci with some of her products at Rotary FNQ Field Days.

which nowadays distributes three types of plastic crates to farmers as far south as Bundaberg and as far north as Cape Tribulation. All crates are manufactured on site at the Gauci’s Mutchilba farm, eliminating the need for farmers to import expensive crates from overseas. “It has been very challenging. I bought a machine that I had never seen before in my life and we had no

contacts in the industry,” Ms Gauci said of her early start in the business. “We’ve had everything go wrong that possibly could but we’ve learnt from that and now know how to do everything. Ms Gauci said farmers had been impressed with the durability of JAT’s crates. Better yet is the growth prospects for JAT, which Ms Gauci confidently predicts will double within the next 12 months.

2017 Rotary FNQ Field Days A futuristic view of farming

Ivan Evans showcases his unmanned helicopter at the Field Days.

FORMER construction worker and private pilot Ivan Evans saw a way to help farmers cut costs and time by using an unmanned helicopter for aerial work. His Atherton-based business SMP Cons operates one of just 14 RMAX helicopters in Australia with the benefits to farmers reaching far and wide. “They’ve been in Australia for five years,” said Mr Evans. “I’ve had one for two years.” Mr Evans said the UAV can be used for seeding, spraying and surveying and can provide 3D maps

‘Interest has been terrific’ The Kubota stall was a hive of activity over the three days of the Field Days, with representatives of the company reporting ‘terrific’ interest. The agriculture, construction and power equipment manufacturer had a wide range of items on display, from hay balers to lawn mowers and everything in between. “Interest has been terrific,” said Terry Tagney, Kubota’s regional service manager. “The crowds have been fantastic. We’ve had lots of people looking through and lots of enquiries.” Mr Tagney said much of the interest came from people who already knew what they wanted. “Today’s buyer is significantly more astute,” he said. “They know what they want. They’ve already looked it up on the internet a lot of the time, but they want to come and see it in the flesh and test it out.

of blocks. It all depends on the attachment that is used. Their carrying capacity and duration of flight beats anything else out there,” he said. The high-tech tool was a revolutionary addition to the Field Days which had a lot of farmers scratching their heads in amazement. “It’s our first time here but there’s been a great response,” said Mr Evans. “It’s a bit of the unknown for everyone, but people have been really interested to find out more.” The RMAX Yamaha helicopter took several flights over Kerribee Park to showcase its abilities.

Dean Gibbon from Brown and Hurley, Townsville, came to the Field Days to showcase the company’s Kenworths. This one was being delivered to Mareeba Transport after the show.

Good time to focus on indigenous workers By Rebecca Wallis For local indigenous people, finding work and an employer who will give them a go, can be hard. So when QT’s Early Learning Centre in Mareeba were looking for new staff, they didn’t hesitate to offer traineeships to three indigenous women. “We have a big indigenous focus here,” said Keely Van Wensveen, Tablelands Site Manager for QITE employment service.

“Indigenous people are very limited with what they can do up here.” QT’s is a social enterprise for QITE offering long day care options for families in Mareeba. They are proud supporters of the indigenous community and this week will be celebrating Reconciliation Week with a flurry of activities including a display of indigenous dancing and a hand painting asking parents to note where they are from. “The big thing is closing the gap,” said Siale Jenkins, Director of QT’s.

“We think it’s important for kids to have good, strong role models working here.” The early learning centre will be celebrating its eighth birthday this year, while QITE will be celebrating its 30th. National Reconciliation Week (NRW) runs annually from 27 May – 3 June. These dates mark two milestones in Australia’s reconciliation journey: The 1967 referendum and the historic Mabo decision, respectively.

Mareeba IGA raises most funds Independent retailers from IGA across Queensland have raised $36,759 for the Leukaemia Foundation. The money was raised through the Leukaemia Foundation’s 18th annual IGA Charity Car Rally which left Mareeba in Queensland on Saturday 29 April, with 165 keen drivers and passengers, dressed as convicts and royals, climbing into 48 different cars. Retailer, Shirlee Giacometti from SUPA IGA Mareeba said “We received the award for highest fundraisers, which is the fifth consecutive year our team has won the award, this time raising in excess of $5,760. We want to thank the community for their ongoing support of IGA and our involvement in the IGA Charity Car Rally.” “IGA retailers believe in supporting the community.”

Cantatas on show from choir For more than twenty years a local choir, trained and conducted by Ruth Beasley, has presented Cantatas to the community, more recently ones written by Ruth and her sister, Audrey Francis. The last performance was in 2015 when “Holy Spirit, Breath of God” was sung across the Tablelands and in Cairns. This Cantata was performed in Ireland last year at the 200th Anniversary of the Church of Ireland in Birr. A DVD of this performance will be shown in the Uniting Church, Mareeba on Saturday, 10th June at 7pm. Admission is free. However there will be an opportunity to donate towards humanitarian work in Syria. For more information contact 4093 0303.

Bureaucratic waste

Boxing inspiration

I was recently flabbergasted at the waste of taxpayers` money on the Peninsula Development Road (PDR) when I was travelling to Mareeba. There was two units apparently pressure cleaner the bitumen road. When I asked the foreman what they were doing, he replied “They are putting texture on the road.” I said “really” and asked “If that is the case why are you doing this out here on a perfectly straight stretch of road which does not record traffic accidents against it, why not on the Rex Range, Kuranda Range or the Gillies Range" which we all know are worst than dangerous with slightest rainfall. His reply was “We are told to do this section from the Quaid Road intersection to the Northern approach of Mareeba”, a distance of some 20klms. I believe the entire job took 11 working days at a possibly minimum cost to the taxpayer of some $60,000, if you include the traffic control as well. Incidentally the traffic control used was from, wait for it, Harvey Bay Traffic Control. Wonderful, could not even use a "local" company for traffic control. Who makes these ridiculous decisions with our money? Whilst all local governments repeatedly ask for more funding to spend on main roads under their jurisdiction, we have to suffer this blatant abuse of taxpayers' money. To add insult to injury, guess what... registrations of motor vehicles will rise on the 1st of July. You can now email me at; kap4cook@gmail.com where now my fellow citizens can air their grievance’s on further bureaucratic waste. Please send me an email with photos of such with a few words so I can act on your behalf and bring attention too and ultimately action. It is with sincere thanks that we send to Omari Kimweri (WBC Silver Flyweight World Boxing Champion; WBA Pan African Light Flyweight Title; WBO Oriental Light Flyweight Title; Australian Flyweight Title) and his entourage for their generous support of Amateur Boxing. Omari took time out of his busy schedule to journey from Melbourne all the way up to Far North Queensland to a little town called Mt Garnet (2 hours away from Cairns) to be our Guest of Honour at our Boxing Tournament. Omari presented all the trophies and medals to the winners and runner ups of each bout and handed out great advice to each participant. He was the perfect celebrity by happily chatting to boxers, patrons, posing for photos and signing autographs. Omari, you have made a massive difference in the lives of all those you talked to. It isn’t very often a famous person alights to the Far North and when they do - we’re left star-struck and it is talked about for generations to come. We still talk about Tony Mundine’s visit some decades ago! Thank you very much again, you are a great ambassador to the sport of Boxing and we wish you the very best for your upcoming fight in Thailand against Chayaphon Moonsri for the WBC Championship of the World on the 3rd June. Hospital bed numbers disputed I write in response to article “Locals stand up for town hospital” May 10, 2017 on page 1 and 3, particularly with reference to the statement by Claire Douglas CEO CHHHS on page three. Ms Douglas stated “there was no data to suggest that Mareeba Hospital has ever been more than a 54 bed hospital” and “all available records showed that Mareeba has always been a 54 bed facility and was

unsure where the 90 bed figure has come from” As an ex long serving employee I can along with many others, dispute this false or misinformed statement. There have been many re-arrangements, re allocations and changes of wards and rooms all throughout the facility over the years since it was first opened. Originally there were two identical wings, Male medical and surgical and female medical and surgical, now east ward and Community Health/ Aged Care wings. Each of these wings housed 32 beds. That is 64 beds for a start, not counting the original children’s ward, now west ward which includes the original postoperative recovery area recently used for Red Cross Blood Bank anther 16 beds. The original maternity wing now Maternity and Children’s ward contained 10 beds. Totally well over the 54 beds however they are counted. May I Suggest that Ms Douglas seek out the original plans for the Mareeba Hospital at the time of construction from the appropriate sources. Then she will clearly understand where the 90 bed figure came from. Carol McGrath Mareeba

Gully destruction effects wildlife In response to “Senseless destruction” (The Express 17/5/17). The wilful destruction of Basalt Gully Park in Mareeba was far worse than any cyclone. The flying foxes will not be back because most of them are dead. That’s what all those drums were for, and to make sure none would be back, all their trees were then destroyed. Frogmouths and other wildlife that lived there will also die because their home territory was also destroyed in the mayhem. B. Johnstone Mareeba

Rivalry for a good cause With the State of Origin set to kick-off this month, Coles supermarkets in Queensland and New South Wales are tackling each other head-on in a rivalry to raise money for children’s hospitals in each state. To support the Lady Cilento Children’s Hospital and contribute to Coles Queensland’s tally, shoppers can purchase a $2 raffle ticket at Coles in Mareeba from Wednesday 31 May until Tuesday 27 June. Each raffle ticket purchased will be entered into the draw to win a Maroons supporter Holden Astra thanks to Care for Kids partners Holden and Coca-Cola Amatil.

Catch up with Mareeba Lionesses It was wonderful to welcome newcomers to the Lioness Bingo and morning tea for seniors on the second Tuesday of the month. Admission is free and includes morning tea and bingo. This community service has been held each month by our club at the CWA Rooms in Wilkes Street for many years and is ideal for our guests to socialise, meet with their long standing friends and make new ones. As well as find out what's happening in our community, win raffles and of course be entertained with heaps of prizes and bingo games. If you or anyone you know would like to attend, just roll up on June 13 and you will be made most welcome.

The month of May was the beginning of a busy time for our club. Mareeba Lionesses also assisted at the 2017 Rotary FNQ Field Days from May 24 top 26. This year we also assisted at the Cycle for Hope which was held at the Heritage Museum on May 27. We also will be helping the Lions club with the 2017 Metrogaine which will be run from Arnold Park on Sunday June 18. This is a fun day for all the family. Make sure you join in the fun by participating as an individual, team or family. Plans are already in hand for the staging of our annual Pink Ribbon fund raiser which will be held at Mareeba Racecourse on August 19. This has become

a must do on the social calendar of everyone in the area and beyond. All monies raised go towards helping Breast Cancer Research. In recent months we have welcomed a number of new club members who have been made very welcome and who also work hard to improve our community and gain individual skills. On July 1 we will be joining the Lions Club for our Annual Changeover Dinner. The new office bearers for the coming year are President Kathy Garozzo, Secretary Cath Gordois and Treasurer Pauline McKinley. If you require any information on Lionesses and our club, please do not hesitate to call Lioness Lyn Simpson on 4092 3953.

KAILEY IS OFF TO SEATTLE

Congratulations to Year 10 student, Kailey Stroud, who recently was nominated to audition with 600 other ap-

plicants for the State Honours Ensemble Program. All applicants who are above a Grade 5 AMEB Level were

invited to audition and Kailey is one of twelve in Queensland to be accepted. Kailey is off to Seattle in November and will be raising funds to help pay for her fl ights and accommodation. Atherton State High School Principal, Mr Tony Whybird commented that “the whole school community is so proud of Kailey’s efforts.” Kailey’s Instrumental Teacher Ms Eleisha Anthony (pictured with Kailey) said that “Kailey was struggling to stay motivated with her playing but was inspired to audition whilst at the State Honours program”. One of only 12 students QLD to be invited to the US, Kailey’s efforts have paid off and she is excitedly looking forward to the trip and the purchase of her new saxophone.

Cairns Brass performed in fundraiser Hundreds of keen music lovers attended the Brass Band spectacular at the ASHS hall recently. The crowd was treated to a night of musical excellence by one of Australia’s fi nest brass bands - Cairns Brass - as well as bands from Atherton High and the cluster primary schools. Thank you to all the parents and staff who worked so hard to deliver this outstanding event. All funds raised go to supporting maintenance and purchasing of instruments for the instrumental music program.

Come and join us for a fun-filled night, celebrating student involvement and development in the Music Program at Atherton State High School. All performances are prepared in classes by the students, for the students.

Motorists risking lives in school zones

Far north Qld’s petrol pain continues Towns and cities in far north Queensland sold some of the most expensive unleaded petrol (ULP) in the State last month, with some motorists charged 20 cents per litre (cpl) more than those in Brisbane. Club spokesperson Renee Smith said RACQ’s monthly fuel price report showed motorists in Innisfail, Cairns and Atherton paid 144.9cpl, 141.1cpl and 140.2cpl respectively for ULP. “Far north Queensland motorists have every right to be frustrated with many servos charging outrageous prices at the bowser during April,” Ms Smith said. “Unfortunately Innisfail was the most expensive place to fill up in the State with the average sitting 20cpl higher than Brisbane.” Ms Smith said the report showed there were some retailers doing the right thing in the area. “Retailers in Mareeba charged on average 10cpl less for fuel than other nearby locations,” she said. “So while it’s frustrating for motorists in Atherton, just 35km down the road, who are paying 11cpl more for fuel, it shows it’s definitely worth filling up in Mareeba if you’re passing through.” Ms Smith said she hoped the Australian Competition and Consumer Commission’s (ACCC) investigation into Cairns petrol prices would also have a positive impact on the region.

RACQ – The State’s peak motoring body has put drivers on notice with school returning today, as new statistics reveal the shocking number of motorists speeding through school zones. The Queensland Department of Transport and Main Roads data provided to RACQ has shown more than 18,000 motorists were fined last year for exceeding the school zone speed limit by more than 13km/h. RACQ spokesperson Lauren Ritchie said with school zones back in force from today, it was a timely reminder for motorists to slow down. “Last year we saw more than 3,000 more speeding fines issued within school zones than the previous year,

this is disappointing and incredibly dangerous,” Ms Ritchie said. “It’s important to obey 40km/h speed limits for the safety of children and adults alike. “Roads surrounding schools become a hive of activity as kids are dropped off and picked up, or are walking, skateboarding and riding bicycles to and from school.” Ms Ritchie reminded drivers the reduced 40km/h zones take effect from 7-9am and 2-4pm weekdays, unless otherwise signed. “Children can be unpredictable so it’s up to motorists to be alert and prepared for anything, and always abide by the speed limit,” she said.

How do you trust an automotive business? In 2016 the Motor Trades Association of Queensland (MTA Queensland) introduced the Professional Circle, a symbol representing ‘proof of professionalism’ in the Queensland automotive industry. This symbol is designed to assure consumers that they are dealing with a respected professional where customer satisfaction is their main priority and where the benchmarks of Industry Standards are met. Queenslanders are encouraged to use automotive businesses that are displaying

the Professional Circle at their premises. By choosing a business displaying the Professional Circle you can be reassured that the business maintains the highest industry standards and meets all the criteria set by the automotive industry’s peak body, MTA Queensland. MTA Queensland Group CEO, Dr Brett Dale said, “MTA Queensland’s Professional Circle branding allows customers to quickly and easily identify an automotive business as trustworthy and professional. “Consumers can be confident that busi-

nesses displaying the Professional Circle uphold 10 Commitments including honesty, professionalism, transparency, courtesy, integrity, care, clarity, proactivity, accountability and compliance. The 10 Commitments provide consumers with an accreditation of professionalism that they can have faith in.” “In addition to the Professional Circle, businesses will display a ‘10/10 Certification’ which is a further endorsement of their 10 Commitments to the Professional Circle.”

RACQ has warned prospective car buyers around the State to be wary of vehicles affected by recent flooding in Queensland and New South Wales. RACQ Head of Technical and Safety Policy Steve Spalding said flood damaged cars could come with a raft of problems and end up costing a lot more than just the sale price. “If you’re in the market for a second-hand car, particularly if you’re buying through a private sale, you need to do proper checks,” Mr Spalding said. “After weather events like what we’ve seen recently, people often opt to sell their car rather than do the necessary repairs. “Often there are no obvious signs of damage, but that doesn’t mean there are no issues with the vehicle. “Driving a car that’s been affected by water can be very risky, especially if mechanical components have been engulfed. Water in the transmission can affect oils and lead to expensive failures. “Water in the fuel tank can cause ongoing running problems, diesel fuel systems are particularly sensitive to water contamination.” Mr Spalding said it wasn’t only regions affected by flood where flood damaged vehicles would be for sale. “Vehicles are often moved around between dealers and wholesalers and a car damaged in the floods on the Gold Coast could pop up for sale in Cairns,” he said. “Regardless of whether you believe the car you want to purchase has been affected by flood waters, it’s important you have it checked by a professional mechanic.”

Buyers beware as flooded cars flood the market

Vehicle vandalism on the rise in Queensland A warning has been issued to Queensland motorists to be on high alert after new RACQ data revealed an increase in vehicle vandalism. RACQ spokesperson Renee Smith said the Club’s insurance claims for intentional damage such as slashed tyres, keyed cars and rocks through windows had increased by 10 percent in the last year. “It’s a big concern to motorists that we’ve seen these types of claims jump from 690 in 2015, to more than 780 last year,” Ms Smith said. “There has also been a significant number of claims for footprints and dents on car roofs and bonnets, but also some quite unusual claims like sugar being put into fuel pumps and even cars being painted a new colour. “Unfortunately the perpetrators are often not found, although we’ve heard of a few cases of revenge attacks by scorned ex-lovers!”

Ms Smith warned owners that many of these incidents had occurred at home. “Often this damage occurs while the car is parked in the driveway, on the street in front of homes and even in garages,” she said. “You can reduce your risk by parking in a well-lit carport or secure garage.”

Festival lights up community

From P1 Mr Toffanello said the fundraising the girls do in the lead up to the festival makes a massive difference to peoples’ lives. This year marks 100 years of Lions clubs so the event was particularly significant. “We’ve given king and queen entrants the task of selling raffle tickets and collectively together this year between five queens and two kings they’ve raised the sum of $10,000,” he said. “And that comes back to us and goes out to needy people, so thank you so very much.” All of the money raised through the festival is filtered out to various clubs and individuals who need a helping hand. “We have had charities approach us before the festival asking for funds,” explained Mr Toffanello. “We’ve got a lot of sporting clubs like the pony club, swimming club, soccer club schools and great performers and talented young people who have great talents but have difficulty funding trips abroad. We help everyone in need.” But the festival would not be possible without the support of many local businesses. “Our sponsors are the biggest part of our festival without our sponsors from Mareeba and Dimbulah and from abroad, our major sponsors, our minor sponsors, everyone that contributes money and donates to this event is just a big plus because it’s a big festival and it does cost money for it to function,” said Mr Toffanello. “And without that money we wouldn’t be able to have such a festival and people wouldn’t enjoy such a festival.” 2017 festival King honours went to Mark Robinson and Zak Busato who will share the title.

Roosters fight back to win The Atherton Roosters have produced a come from behind 38-32 win over the Tully Tigers, in Tully on Saturday night. Tully had put two tries on the Roosters in the opening five minutes and looked set for a comfortable night up 12-0. But to their credit, the Roosters lifted and were soon fronting the contest 14-12 at the 20th minute mark.

Tully took a 24-20 lead to the break before a strong restart saw the Roosters push ahead 36-24. Tully did finish with two late tries before the Roosters landed a penalty conversion in the final seconds to secure the much needed six point victory. Roosters coach Dean Howard said that the forwards had did the work up the mid-

dle and the points followed. “Our forwards really got the job done for us with a lot of yards and our backs always looked good with the ball,” Howard said. “The win is a confidence builder for the side and we can look at building on that.” This Saturday the Roosters play away at Innisfail.

Bulls show strength of the club

Down on players, down on coaches, the Bulls showed the community of Mareeba what they are made off with all four grades enjoying victories on the weekend and the premier mens moving back to second spot on the FNQ premier league ladder. Over the weekend the club scored thirty-two goals and only conceded three. The clean sweep

started on Friday night with the Bulls second division men winning 17-0. The wins then continued on Saturday with the ladies winning 7-2, the reserves 6-0 and the premier mens topping it off with a hard-fought victory over the Marlin Coast rangers to win 2-1. With three players and two coaches suspended, plus three injuries and two stuck overseas, it could

have been easy for the Bulls to accept a tough weekend, but the clubs depth was there for all see. The ladies side played with only 11 players, the second division boys stepped up to help the reserves and the premiers put aside a week of turmoil to take the three points. Bulls premier coach Alex Srhoj stated how proud he was of the club and it’s weekends like

this that make us see how strong and united the club is. “It was just an outstanding effort by everyone, from all the players, volunteers – everyone had a massive week and we still stuck together to get some great results over the weekend,” Srhoj said. The Bulls travel away to Edge Hill this Sunday with games from 12 noon.

Gators take memorial Care Chiropractic Qld shield honours RACE DAY The Mareeba Gladiators winning streak continued on the weekend with all three teams coming out on top in Cairns against Brothers. The A-grade team were keen to get stuck into Sunday’s game against Brothers, especially as it was so significant. The Tony Schaaf Memorial Shield began in 2015 to honour the late Tony ‘Sassman’ Schaaf and the game is now an annual event between the two teams. ‘Sassman’ had an allegiance with both teams as he played for Brothers but helped young players in Mareeba where his kids played. The tribute match is a yearly fundraiser for his four boys aged between four and 13.

The Gladiators held no prisoners on the field storming home with a 26-4 win, with the reserve grade winning 12-10. The A-grade Gladiators team are sitting in third spot on the Cairns District Rugby League ladder with 16 points – only two points behind league leaders Brothers and Yarrabah. The reserves are in fifth position with 15 points, while the second division Malanda Eels team are in second spot on 12 points. This Saturday the Gladiators play at home against Southern Suburbs. Bring the green and gold and cheer on the local boys at home.
