A smashing good show
INTENSITY, skill and great teamwork was on display at Firth Park last Saturday, after Mareeba’s Maiden Overs cricket team (pictured) took out the inaugural Lacy Bra Cup. The Ladies T20 cricket competition grand final was action-packed, bolstered by a Tradies vs Under 16s match and finishing with Mareeba Cricket Club’s annual trophy presentation. The fun is set to continue with another Cup already being plannned for later in the year following its stellar success. ˃ Full story in SPORT

Farm debt Bill slammed A STATE Government Bill designed to prevent banks foreclosing on Queensland farming properties without first offering mediation has been slammed as a “token” gesture by rural MPs. Katter’s Australian Party MPs Shane Knuth and Robbie Katter were left gobsmacked after their Rural and Regional Adjustment (Development Assistance) Amendment Bill , which would have established a State-funded Rural and Industries Development Bank to help debt-ridden farmers, was denied a vote by both major parties. Instead, Labor and the LNP passed the Farm Business Debt Mediation Bill in the early hours of last Wednesday morning, which, from July 1,
requires financial institutions to offer debt mediation to farmers who are in arrears. However, farmers have the option of declining an offer of mediation, which will be overseen by the Queensland Rural and Industry Development Authority (QRIDA), formerly known as the Queensland Rural Adjustment Authority (QRRA). “The Bill that was passed is a Clayton’s gesture,” Mr Knuth said. “We were so disappointed that Labor and the LNP used their numbers in the house to prevent our Bill from being even voted on.” Mr Knuth, the Member for Dalrymple, said
his party’s Bill was superior in every respect to the one that was passed by parliament, with the Development Bank able to pay a percentage of a farmer’s debt back to their lender. In exchange, the Development Bank would then give the farmer a low-interest loan which could be paid back over several years. “Our Bill is what rural and regional Queensland needs,” he said. “It would relieve the pressure on those farmers through difficult times. “We’re sick and tired of hearing about how we need to let the market decide what’s best.” Mr Knuth said cattle farmers had been doing it
tough for a number of years. “We went through five years of drought and a ban on live exports. This resulted in a lack of markets to sell cattle to and the meatworks then screwed the prices down,” he said. “Landowners were virtually giving cattle away.” Under amendments put into the Debt Mediation Bill by the LNP, a Farm Debt Restructure Office will also be established to help farmers manage their finances. But Mr Katter slammed the move as a “political con job”. CONTINUED Page 3

The cast of the re-enactment of James Cook’s landing on the Endeavour River, one of the main drawcards of Cooktown’s annual Discovery Festival.

COOKTOWN’S annual Discovery Festival has been revamped with the creation of two separate events and several fresh inclusions. The non-historic components of previous festivals will be incorporated into a new community festival which will be called the Wild and Windy Cooktown Festival and will be coordinated by not-for-profitgroup, “Our CDF Incorporated”. Meanwhile, Cook Shire Council will now oversee the delivery of the Discovery Festival, which will continue to celebrate the rich heritage and history of the region. Cook Shire mayor Peter Scott said the Discovery Festival had been an iconic event on Cooktown’s calendar for so long and brought many visitors from outside the region to discover the area’s stories and celebrate with the community. “As we begin to firm up our vision for the Cooktown 2020 event, which will be a commemorative celebration of the 250th anniversary of Captain Cook’s visit, it’s a great opportunity to start to align the Discovery Festival to the 2020 program,” he said. “By separating the heritage ele-
Triathlon needs your help A LOCAL triathlon dedicated to supporting ex-service members is putting the call out for both competitors and volunteers this April. The annual Yungaburra Triathlon will hold five events between April 22 and 23, with children, beginners and seasoned athletes all encouraged to give it a go. “Whether you are an elite triathlete or just interested in trying out the sport for the first time, young or old, there is a race option to suit,” said Triathlon organising committee Chair and Division 4 councillor Sam Banks. “Make a weekend of it and explore the local markets, browse boutique shops, enjoy award winning cafes and restaurants showcasing our local produce, have an adventure in our beautiful natural environment and stay on for Anzac Day services across the region.” Held at the Afghanistan Avenue of Honour on the Tinaburra Foreshore, the event draws in participants
ments of the current Discovery Festival from the traditional community celebrations, we can build a new program which will help to build attendance and focus an audience on our history and stories in the lead up to 2020.” In 2017 the Discovery Festival and the Wild and Windy Cooktown Festival will be held on the same weekend, from June 9 to 11. In future years, the two events will be held on separate weekends. “By separating the events, we are able to focus in more detail on our historical stories for locals and visitors alike through the Discovery Festival and then we can kick back and celebrate all that we are as a community today with our new celebration event,” Cr Scott said. Details of the Wild and Windy Cooktown Festival will be unveiled in the coming weeks, along with a program for the new heritage-focused Discovery Festival. and spectators to enjoy a weekend on the Tablelands. The Enticer, Corporate (team) and kids “Aquathon” events will be held on April 22 from 3pm, while the more difficult Olympic and Sprint races will be held on April 23 from 7am. All events can be entered as an individual or as a team, with a minimum age of seven or older able to participate. Road closures will be kept to a minimum for the event. Impacted households will have received information in the mail on road closure details and anticipated timeframes. The town centre of Yungaburra will be accessible for the entire weekend with a brief road closure on the Gillies Highway between the Yungaburra State School and Peeramon Rd from 6.30am to
about 9.30am on the Sunday morning. Access to the Tinaburra Foreshore and boat ramp will be closed during the events. Tablelands Mayor Joe Paronella encouraged locals and visitors to try a triathlon event while supporting returned servicemen and women in the process. “Sponsorship and registration fees cover the cost of the event, with 10 per cent of registration fees donated to organisations that support returned service members,” he said. “If you can’t compete, cheer on the competitors or volunteer to help out.” For more information and to register, visit www. yungaburratriathlon.org and like Yungaburra Triathlon on Facebook.

Mixed reaction to debt Bill FROM Page 1 “A farm debt mediation mechanism doesn’t solve the debt problem, it just ensures that when debt has finally caught up with a producer the so called Farm Debt Restructure Office will try and mediate before the banks foreclose,” he said. But Mareeba Shire councillor and cattle farmer Alan Pedersen welcomed the Bill, saying any move to assist farmers struggling with debt was welcome. “It’s something that needs to be done. It’s not just advantageous for graziers or farmers, but also for the bank,” he said. “If the bank can keep those customers
out there with some sort of stability for land ownership, I think that’s a good thing. “We’ve got a bit of a revolving door at the moment with properties being bought and sold. “Up until now, I don’t think there has been much in the way of any talk between the big four banks and people with those big debts. “It just seems to be they turn up at your front door and you pack your bags.” Cr Pedersen, who owns about 1500 head cattle at his 45,000ha property at Karma Waters, said he knew of several farmers who were facing financial trouble, resulting in some being forced to sell their properties. “The problem we have is there’s too
much short-sightedness within the banking industry and government,” he said. “Most people on the land are there for the long haul…Your income on a property can fluctuate by 50 per cent from one year to the next just from a bad season or bad prices. “There needs to be some sort of 10-year equalisation, similar to your tax, where you can bring your tax credits forward for a five year rollover and the banks should understand that too. “There’s going to be some years where you can’t make any interest payments because you’ve got no turnover, and that flexibility is not there.” Cook MP Billy Gordon was unable to respond to a request for comment.
Dalrymple MP Shane Knuth has slammed the State Government’s bipartisan Farm Business Debt Mediation Bill.
Sparks fly over council wind farm decision TWO Ravenshoe property owners are furious over being denied a right of reply following a council decision on noise levels at the town’s Windy Hill Wind Farm. Tensions reached boiling point last Thursday in the lead up to council voting in favour of approving a material change of use to a condition for wind farm owner RATCH Australia to start negotiations with landowners regarding compliance with turbine noise conditions. Local resident Lyn O’Connor, who owns a property adjacent to the wind farm but does not live there, interrupted the meeting to protest the fact she had been denied the right to make a deputation (presentation) about the issue to council. After a series of exchanges, Cr Paronella then adjourned the meeting and asked members of the public and media to leave council chambers until the situation calmed. The meeting resumed shortly after with the public and media let back in. In emails exchanged between Mrs O’Connor and Tablelands mayor Joe Paronella last week, Cr Paronella wrote that council “would not be in a position to have representatives of the dif-
ferent viewpoints present to council within the agenda”. “The issue is a complex matter and there are many stakeholders with diverse viewpoints,” he wrote. “In the interest of fairness and with limitations of time for the agenda, I am unable to allow a presentation from you.” According to council’s report, in May 2012, RATCH committed to undertaking operational noise monitoring for a period of three months on surrounding properties and provided a monitoring report in October 2015. It concluded that turbine noise exceeded the conditioned maximum noise levels at a dwelling on Glendinning Road, identified as lot 228 on CWL 259. The dwelling is located on land that does not host turbines and the maximum non-compliance is 1.7 dB at wind speeds of 9 m/s. While the land owner’s consent is normally required for any development approval under Section 371 of the State Government’s Sustainable Planning Act 2009, council officers deemed it unnecessary in RATCH’s case, citing Section 371 (e) of the Act.
“I am extremely annoyed that I have not been approached by any party re my consent, the ramification of which could potentially devalue my property,” he wrote. “I strongly request that the application approval be deferred until after RATCH has discussed the matter with me.” Mr Drury wrote that he had “no complaint with any noise generated by the turbines but my worry is that after an upgrade there could possibly be additional noise”. “You advised me that no decision will be made that may in any way affect or register any interest against the title of my property at this time,” he wrote to Cr Paronella. “I object in the strongest possible terms that I may lose my rights to object should ever the noise level rise substantially and should I lose this right, I would have no alternative other than to take legal action. “I don’t believe council has any right to shift the legal goal posts so that any non-compliant operation of any sort becomes compliant and then to deny potential objections.”
Section 371 (e) provides an exemption to obtaining owner’s consent in situations where either it is not practicable to obtain consent due to a number of owners of the land or the requested development change does not materially affect the owners’ land. “It is recommended that the application be approved by amending turbine noise conditions to provide for an alternative arrangement between the affected landowner and the wind farm operator,” the council report’s executive summary concluded. Speaking at the meeting, council regional planning manager Patrick Clifton said RATCH’s application “does not attempt to change the maximum permitted noise level”. If no alternative agreement can be reached between the landowner and RATCH after three months, council will issue an enforcement notice to RATCH demanding they comply with current turbine noise standards. In an email sent from Lot 228 owner Peter Drury to Cr Paronella, Mr Drury expressed his frustration that council did not require his consent for RATCH’s development approval request.

A SET of free workshops designed to give farmers the latest information on pest baiting will come to Mareeba and the Tablelands next month. Farming lobby group AgForce will run the workshops, which will offer training in chemical handling safety and the use of new baits and tools such as Canid Pest Ejectors (M44 ejectors) with capsules containing the toxin sodium fluoroacetate, also known as “1080”. According to invasive pest information website, PestSmart Connect, M-44 ejectors are “baited, spring-activated devices that propel the contents of a poison capsule into the mouth of an animal as it pulls upwards with sufficient force on a baited lure head”. AgForce Projects Vertebrate Pest Officer Damien Ferguson said six presenters had been running workshops for farmers across the state since September last year. “Feral animals cost the Queensland agri-
culture industry hundreds of millions of dollars each and every year so producers need to know how they can efficiently and successfully control these risks to their business,” he said. “In Far North Queensland, pests such as wild dogs and feral pigs are a major problem for horticulture, cane, dairy and cattle producers.” Mr Ferguson said Mareeba and the Tablelands faced unique challenges with their typical high amounts of rainfall and humidity during the wet season eroding regular baits. “It doesn’t take long for a bait to be broken down into a non-toxic form in that climate,” he said, adding that 1080 capsules were sealed until activated. Mr Ferguson said eligible producers would qualify for a chemical accreditation card for nationally recognised units of training as well as a certificate of participation for the pest animal management training. Mareeba District Fruit and Vegetable Grow-
ers Association president Joe Moro welcomed the workshops and said they would help farmers mitigate crop damage down by feral pigs, kangaroos and wild dogs. “I think it’s good the latest information will be provided and it’s always good to refresh peoples’ memory when it comes to dealing with any form of chemical and the safe way to use it,” he said “If it impacts farmers’ crop losses, it’s impacting them financially and it is a problem that doesn’t just stop at one boundary, so it’s important that farmers work together.” The workshops are tailored for producers in a range of sectors including beef, sheep, grain, cane, cotton, horticulture, poultry and pigs, with one being held in Mareeba on April 11 and another in Ravenshoe the following day. For more information and to register for the workshops, visit www.agforceprojects.org.au or call 3238 6048.

Overgrown rail corridor a bad look WEEDS infesting parts of Mareeba’s rail corridor could finally be cleaned up after complaints the derelict area is making the town look like New York’s “The Bronx”. The corridor, part of which extends along Railway Avenue, is owned by the State Government with Queensland Rail maintaining its remaining operational sections. However, the State engages Mareeba Shire Council to slash and maintain those sections no longer in operation. The Express is aware of at least one formal complaint made to council with regards to the state of the corridor.
Council chief executive officer Peter Franks said council would follow up any complaints about the rail corridor to see what could be done. A Department of Transport and Main Roads (TMR) spokesman said they would “investigate any calls for maintenance and respond accordingly”. Council is currently in the final stages of negotiations with TMR to sub-lease two separate sections of the town’s decommissioned rail corridor. The first section goes from Basalt St up to Mareeba Airport while the second consists
of lots behind the town’s current post office building. Under the offer, TMR would provide money for maintenance of the sub-leased part of the corridor. “We are fairly well progressed with our negotiations with them, so hopefully it will become council’s soon,” Mr Franks said. “But the rail corridor which still has the active railway line will remain with Queensland Rail.” The TMR spokesman said they were in the process of finalising negotiations on the sub-lease to council.

Dial-A-Doctor in regional trial A BULK-billing GP service that comes straight to your door will start in Mareeba and Atherton from May 1. Dial-A-Doctor has been contracted by the Northern Queensland Primary Health Network (NQPHN) to begin a trial lasting at least six months in Atherton and Mareeba. Dial-A-Doctor director of operations Mike Dale said he was looking forward to seeing how the after-hours service performed in the region. “It’s all about the benefit to the consumer, being the patient,” he said. “It’ll encourage the patient to use the service and not push through an illness, seeking treatment at the beginning of the illness rather than trying to do it themselves because they can’t afford it.” Mr Dale said it was too early to say how many doctors would be assigned to service Mareeba and Atherton or how far out of each town they could travel, but the company would constantly make re-assessments based on patient demand. “We want to make sure we’re delivering what we can promise to do,” he said. “We’ll need patients to be patient with us
while we continue to assess our operations.” The popular after-hours service, which started in Cairns in 2010, has since been rolled out to Perth, Bunbury, Darwin, Melbourne, Bendigo, Sydney and Port Macquarie. “We’ve got a couple of doctors who are very keen to relocate, even from as far away as Victoria because they like working with indigenous and regional communities,” Mr Dale said of the new trial service. “They really care about community welfare.” Mr Dale stressed the service would bolster rather than take away from existing GP clinics by providing medical services after-hours when clinics were closed. NQPHN CEO Robin Moore praised the move. “This is a positive step to increasing availability of after-hours GP services, especially in peoples’ own homes,” he said. “This is in line with NQPHN’s goal of increasing primary care options and services in the region, especially in Mareeba.” Meanwhile, Mr Moore will visit Canberra this week to meet with Federal Assistant Health
Minister David Gillespie to discuss Mareeba being recognised as a District of Workplace Shortage (DWS). Both Mareeba and Atherton are hamstrung by the fact the area is not allowed to recruit overseas-trained GPs, due to the region not being classified as DWS by the Federal Department of Health. The map considers coastal towns such as Port Douglas and Innisfail as places that qualify as a DWS and therefore would allow an overseas trained doctor to practice there, as well as access to the Medicare benefits which enables bulk billing. Under the Section 19AB of the Federal Health Insurance Act 1973, overseas-trained GPs must practice in a DWS for 10 years before they can go elsewhere for work. Once set up in Mareeba and Atherton, DialA-Doctor will operate Monday to Friday from 6pm to 8am, Saturday from midday onwards and Sunday and public holidays 24/7.

Union raises labour concerns LOCAL poultry workers have voiced their concerns over the use of foreign labour at a Mareeba chicken factory. Workers and locals who had applied for jobs at Baiada Poultry’s Mareeba factory met with Australian Meat Industry Employees Union (AMIEU) representatives at the Mareeba Turf Club on Monday night to discuss concerns local jobs were being snubbed in favour of 417 and 457 visa workers. Queensland Council of Unions general secretary Ros McLennan, who also attended the meeting, said it was imperative Baiada prioritised local jobs considering the unemployment rate in Mareeba recently hit double digits in December last year. “We know that there are locals on the Tablelands and in the Mareeba area who are desperate for these jobs,” she said. “We’re particularly worried that the temporary work visa program is uncapped and it’s been growing for a number of years without any regard for the level of unemployment in Australia. “Our worry is that both Australian and overseas workers are be-
ing disadvantaged and exploited on a regular basis.” Local AMIEU workplace delegate Fred Brunjes claimed that local job opportunities had dried up in recent years as labour hire companies had moved in. “We ran for probably 15 years on a totally local workforce. The plant was then bought by Baiada Poultry. In the last five years, out of roughly 200 people we would have probably 86 locals. The rest is foreign labour,” he said. A Baiada spokesman denied the factory employed such a high proportion of foreign workers and said the company took “great pride in being a major local employer in the area”. Baiada supplied the AMIEU with work application forms to be distributed at the meeting, as well contact details for their company representative. “We will add the names we receive to a register of job candidates that we will contact as opportunities at the plant become available,” the spokesman said.

UNDER FIRE: Baiada Poultry’s Mareeba factory has raised the ire of unions for their use of foreign labour.
“We look forward to continuing to work with the AMIEU and other stakeholders to secure job opportunities for Mareeba residents.” Baiada operates eight processing plants across the country, including their Mareeba facility. The company supplies chicken products to a range of supermarkets, fast food outlets and their own subsidiary brands, Steggles and Lilydale Free Range Chicken. It is not the first time Baiada has been exposed for using foreign labour after the Fair Work Ombudsman found in 2015 that foreign workers employed at three processing plants on 417 visas were paid about half the minimum hourly wage and worked up to 18 hours a day without paid overtime. Ms McLennan said Baiada’s apparent use of foreign workers in an area with high unemployment raised questions over the wages paid and work conditions. “If companies can’t find people locally to fill these jobs, then perhaps the ability should be there for them to access overseas workers,” she said. “But there are locals who are absolutely begging for a chance at a decent job in Mareeba and the Tablelands.” Ms McLennan said the federal government should ensure businesses were required to advertise jobs to local workers before they are allowed to bring in 417 and 457 visa workers.

week. Once built, the old clinic, which has been in use since the 1960s, will be demolished to make way for a parking lot. “What people can expect is a clinic that’s over double the size of the current one,” Mr Mehan said. “Because we’ve got those three consultation rooms, you can book and mix and match those to accommodate just about anyone who wants to come because they’ll be designed as clinical spaces. “It gives us the ability to be responsive to changes in care models and technology for the next 50 years.” Current services provided at the clinic including accident and emergency treatment, outpatient (GP) services, immunisation and a range of visiting clinical services such as breast screening, aged care, and mental health treatment. Ms Taylor, a Dimbulah local, said it was satisfying to see the clinic take shape after five years of community lobbying. That included a final 18 month period in which she took a leading role to ensure the new clinic was funded, with the help of former Mareeba Mayor Mick Borzi and for-

mer Cairns and Hinterland Hospital Health Service chairman Bob Norman. “It’s a great milestone,” Ms Taylor said. “I felt strongly that not having an up-todate facility was holding Dimbulah back… The town really did need this upgrade.” Ms Taylor also praised Dalrymple MP Shane Knuth for his efforts in helping to secure funding for the new clinic. “Without him, we’d still be waiting for a new clinic,” she said. Mareeba mayor Tom Gilmore said he always welcomed improvements to government-funded services in the local community, including Dimbulah’s new clinic. “That old facility was built in the 1960s and was simply inadequate for the demands and needs of that community,” he said. “I’d like to congratulate the group of people who argued so strenuously for a period of time, who clearly have had a major impact on the decision to spend that sort of money. “They’ve done a magnificent job and that’s what small communities can do when they dig their toes in.” Construction of the clinic is due to finish in September.

DIMBULAH’S new Primary Health Centre will finally bring the town’s medical services into the 21st century after construction started last Monday. A sod-turning ceremony was held at the Stephen St site featuring Cairns and Hinterland Hospital and Health Service (CHHHS) administrator Terry Mehan, Mareeba mayor Tom Gilmore and Mareeba Hospital’s Queensland Council of Australian Governments committee chair Gaye Taylor. Indigenous elders also attended. Mr Mehan said the $4.5 million facility would offer patients three consultation rooms, medical residency accommodation, an air-conditioned waiting area and improved “Telehealth” services enabling video-link consultations with medical specialists or emergency management support. “That in turn takes pressure off both Mareeba and Cairns, because the residents of Dimbulah can access more services through Telehealth,” he said. However, there will be no change in the current level of service provisions to the clinic, which include a nurse on duty five days a week and visiting doctor twice a

Former Mareeba woman Nat Gray will play at the Basel Tattoo with the Australian Army this July.
Specials Available from Wednesday 29th March day 4th April 2017 to Tuesday
Drumming her way to the top A FORMER Mareeba State High School student will put her drumming skills to the test on the world stage after being selected to play in the Basel Tattoo. Private Nat Gray, an army musician, will be attached to the Royal Military College band to perform at the annual event in Switzerland’s capital this July. The tattoo features military bands from around the world, including Australia and New Zealand. The 24-year-old said she was stoked to be selected to participate in the tattoo after only about a year in the army following a brief career as a music teacher. “I’m very excited but very humbled at the same time. I get to play with some amazing people every day and this trip is going to be my first overseas,” she said. “We’ll play music for 10 nights in front of 3500 people each night. “I’m there as a marching drummer but on the same
tour we’ll be doing a stage band concert performance as well.” Pvt Gray, who is part of the wider Australian Army Band Corps, is normally based in Kapooka as part of the Australian Army Band. Her talents with the sticks were recognised at the end of her initial employment training when she had to perform a recital last year in front of the Defence Force School of Music commanding officer. Pvt Gray said she still had fond memories of Mareeba where she learned to play, including a stint as a drummer for local band Careless and playing alongside her old teacher, Joe Vizzone, in Atherton Performing Arts Theatre’s Nania production. “I owe a lot of gratitude to everyone who has helped me over the last 12 years and am extremely lucky to have had some amazing opportunities,” she said. The Basel Tattoo will kick off on July 21.
about five per cent of the centre’s build costs. “It’s the view of the group that it’s excessive,” he said. “Typically, what we would see for other developments with other shire councils is those charges somewhere around 1.5 to 2.5 per cent of the construction costs.” The centre plans to house about 71 children across four different age groups. Division 6 councillor Bronwyn Voyce said while she sympathised with the developer’s situation, the costs of “constructing, maintaining and renewing infrastructure” had continued to increase for council. “I would like us as a council to consider infrastructure incentive opportunities and a way to incentivise development,” she said. “But I’m really uncomfortable to do that on an ad-hoc basis. When we do that, we need to think about the strategic development opportunities
that we want to incentivise. “We have to do it in a way that we analyse the potential costs and benefits to the community. “Some of the benefits have been articulated around job creation and additional childcare offerings, but I don’t want to leave our community with an irreversible infrastructure funding gap.” Speaking to The Express, Freshwater Planning’s Pruthesh Patel said in light of council’s decision, he was unsure if he would proceed with building the centre in Atherton. “It would be cheaper for us to build in Cairns than here,” he said. “I’ll have to speak to my builder, architect and other business partners. We’ll have to the do the numbers again.” Mr Patel said the centre would not be a high density facility and therefore would not be a strain on council infrastructure.

Childcare centre in doubt A PROPOSED childcare centre for Atherton may now be in doubt after Tablelands Regional Council refused a request to discount infrastructure charges for the project. Council approved a development application by Freshwater Planning Pty Ltd for a childcare centre on Tumbare St in December last year. However, the developer subsequently made written representations to the Infrastructure Charges Notice that accompanied that approval, requesting that council consider reducing the charges and payment be deferred for at least 12 months. The infrastructure charges relate to the provision and upgrade of trunk infrastructure to accommodate the anticipated increase in demand generated by the development. Project architect Shane Cahill told council at last Thursday’s meeting that the charges, which currently total more than $58,000, would be

FOUR batches of faulty EpiPens have been recalled by the Therapeutic Goods Administration (TGA). EpiPen 300 microgram adrenaline injection syringe auto-injectors from batch 5FA665, 5FA6651, 5FA6652 or 5FA6653 have been recalled by the TGA, with those affected urged to return them to their local pharmacy for a free replacement or refund.
It has been identified that EpiPens from the four affected batches may contain a defective part that could result in the auto-injector failing to activate or a need to apply more force than normal to activate it. All four EpiPen batches expire in April. The TGA advises that it is important to keep the current auto-injector until users get a replacement,

" Building a Better Future Together" COMMUNITY UPDATE THE VET SCENE Principal's
MESSAGE As we approach the end of Term 1, we are starting to look at our data and how we are tracking. We have targets set for our overall attendance at 88%. Last year our attendance was overall 82%. So what does Term 1 look like and how does that compare with 2016? The data is in the table below: Year 2017 2016
Overall attendance 84.8% 84.3%
>90% 57.3% 55.5%
>85% 68% 67.5%
As you can see from our figures, the support of our Parents is very important to improving our attendance. A 2% rise in attendance greater than 90% is positive, but it can be better. We still have a long way to go, but encourage all parents to contact us in Term 2 to ensure we are getting all our students to school. Our school focus is shown in the diagram (right) and will continue to be on Positive Behaviour for Learning and Reading. We look forward to working with our school community with our Parent Teacher interviews on the 26th April and further Parent Walks in term 2. Have a great Easter holiday period.
Scott Whybird 2017 KEY TARGETS ACROSS THE WHOLE SCHOOL • Raise overall student attendance from 82% to 88% • Raise Queensland Certificate of Education (QCE) attainment overall from 90% to 96% • Develop quality teaching relating to Reading and Positive Behaviours for Learning (PB4L) • Promote and establish strong partnerships with parents to achieve targets above Parents and caregivers play a crucial role in achieving these targets and we look forward to working with the community.
The VET scene at Mareeba State High School is well and truly a buzz with Year 11 and 12 students starting various courses on offer this term. These include courses in Health Support Services, Rural Fire, Retail Salon and Beauty, Rural Operations – Mechanics, Fabrication and Farm Skills, Hospitality and Resource and Infrastructure. All Courses are delivered by reputable training providers, allowing our students to gain real industry skills while at school and preparing them for the world of work. To better prepare our future ‘Senior Students’, all Year 10s will soon be participating in a week of Work Experience, scheduled for Term 2, week 5. Students will be getting their Work Experience Packs this week during the SEED Program and should start thinking and acting upon where they might like to go for this week.
Health Support Services Students during an assessment on ‘infectious disease control’ courtesy of TAFE
The SEED program will be run next week on Monday and Tuesday, where all Year 10s will participate in a the practical, inter-active and hands-on workshops to build their employability skills and help meet employer expectations. This program will also include a ‘Speed Careering’ workshop where students get to practice their newly learnt skills on local business employers and industry professionals who have kindly donated their time for the program.
SCIENCE STUDENTS STUDY SUNFLOWERS This year all Mareeba State High School Year 8 Science students are growing sunflowers as part of their “Cells, Growth and Reproduction” unit. The sunflower growing is part of a State wide competition run by the University of Queensland which is designed to inspire current science students to become the next generation of plant and agricultural scientists. The students will measure and track the sunflowers growth and reproductive stages and investigate the cellular structures of the plants. The students will then create a presentation about their experience and what they have learned and these presentations will be in the running for a $100 prize form the University of Queensland.
i
The school will also have a weigh in day where the tallest, heaviest and best looking sunflowers from each class will also receive prizes.
PARENT INFORMATION SESSION How can I support my kids? What if we need help? What services are available in-house?
All are invited to the next P&C Meeting to be held on Tuesday 18th April in the Admin Common Room. An informative presentation will be made at 5:30pm by the Mareeba State High School Student Support Services – Haylee Campbell (School Based Police Officer), Wendy Kum Yuen (School Chaplain) and Chris Gray (School Based Youth Health Nurse).

AN eagle-eyed local has won The Express’ reptile books giveaway after correctly identifying the snake featured in a story earlier this month. Silke Roth won nature books Rainforest Frogs of the Wet Tropics and Living with Snakes and other Reptiles when she identified the yellow faced whip snake featured in our March 1 story on a pair of local snake catchers. Ms Roth’s name was chosen in a random draw with other entrants who had submitted the correct answer. The books were kindly donated by Miss Hiss Reptiles co-owners Hayley-Anne and Jonathan Hill, who spent a busy summer catching and relocating a wide variety of snakes across Mareeba and the Tablelands. That included taipans, eastern brown snakes, scrub pythons, keelbacks, tree snakes, red-bellied black snakes and even a yellow faced whip snake.

SHANGHAI-STYLE BRAISED PORK BELLY
Ingredients
Method 1. Bring a pot of water to a boil. Blanch the pork for a couple minutes. This gets rid of impurities and starts the cooking process. Take the pork out of the pot and set aside. 2. Over low heat, add oil and sugar to your wok. Melt the sugar slightly and add the pork. Raise the heat to medium and cook until the pork is lightly browned. 3. Turn the heat back down to low and add cooking wine, light soy sauce, dark soy sauce, and water. 4. Cover and simmer for about 45 minutes to 1 hour until pork is fork tender. Every 5-10 minutes, stir to prevent burning and add more water if it gets too dry. 5. Once the pork is fork tender, if there is still a lot of visible liquid, uncover the wok, turn up the heat, and stir continuously the sauce has reduced to a glistening coating.

Maiden Overs nab convincing win MAREEBA’S Maiden Overs were simply too good against Atherton’s Fine Legs in an epic Lacy Bra Cup grand final at Firth Park last Saturday. After going unbeaten during the regular four-week season competition in February, Fine Legs looked the favourites to take the win. But Maiden Overs’ Janelle Smithwick put in a great display of batting to score 62 runs off four overs and give her team a flying start. The Overs backed it up with some great bowling and batting to eventually notch up 7/186, with Fine Legs all out for 106 runs. The game was followed by a Tradies vs Under 16s match, with the Tradies emerging victorious. Perfect weather capped off a fun day on the field for all involved, which finished with Mareeba Cricket Club’s annual trophy presentation. Another Cup is already being plannned for the later this year, while the club looks set to field two mens senior teams in the 2017/18 cricket season alongside junior squads.

Burton to headline sailing day
SUPERSTAR: Olympic gold medallist Tom Burton will run a clinic at this weekend’s Tinaroo Sailing Club come-and-try day.
OLYMPIC gold medallist Tom Burton will headline Tinaroo Sailing Club’s come-and-try day this Sunday. The 26-year-old, who won gold at last year’s Rio Olympics in the Laser sailing category, will run an already booked out clinic for young sailors at Lake Tinaroo. Burton said he was excited to visit the club and looked forward to sharing some of his expert knowledge with sailors of varying skill levels, including boat handling, fitness tips and making split second decisions. “When I first started, sailing was the most fun thing to do,” he said. “It’s always nice to see young kids just passionate about the sport and so keen to go out and sail just because they want to.” Burton said there was no reason why a young Tablelands sailor couldn’t make it to the Olympics one day. “If they have the desire and motivation to do it and a little bit of talent which gets identified and they get given help along the way, then I don’t see why not,” he said, adding that he used to travel 45 minutes to find a place to sail as youngster. “If you want it enough and you’re prepared to put in the work to get it, I don’t see why any background will hold you back.” But the clinic is just a small part of the wider comeand-try day, with the club encouraging any aspiring sailors to get along and have a go. Experienced club members will be on hand to take those interested out for a sail on the water. The free day will run from 9am to 12pm at Tinaroo Sailing Club along Black Gully Rd. EXPRESS sPORT Devils clip Killer Bees THE Red Devils have sailed to a 75-49 victory over a lacklustre Killer Bees in Round 6 of Mareeba Basketball’s Men’s Summer League. The Thursday night clash looked worrisome for the Bees from the start, who were forced to play with only four players until the final quarter. Devils, knowing their advantage, were in control but slowed down their pace. But a feverish Bees were in no mood to muck around, Charles Socie helping his side equalise then go 6-4 up with just over five minutes remaining. Devils veteran Andy Harris returned serve not long after with a crisp sink shot to make it 7-6. The floodgates opened soon after as Juni Bordeos, Ben Fresta and Brandon and Layton Osborne unleashed a bevy of lay-ups, two point shots and three-pointers around the D to put Devils in the box seat and close out the quarter 23-10. The second quarter continued in much the same fashion as the first had ended, the Bees terribly outpaced despite a valiant solo effort by Socie around the hoop. A Fresta slam drunk in the final 30 seconds of the second
quarter put the icing on the cake for the Devils, with the scoreline blowing out to 40-18. Socie continued his rampage against the odds in the third quarter, nailing a slam dunk and even blocking a surefire twopointer by Fresta. It would be for little reward though, as the Devils ran riot to make it 58-29 at the end of the quarter. Bees found some much needed stability when Akil Islam joined the fray to return his squad to full strength. Devils responded, picking up the pace significantly. Bordeos, Fresta and the Osbornes showed their class in a number of impressive combination plays to pile on the pain. Despite being down 67-39, Bees continued to fight, ably helped by Socie who was playing out of his skin by this stage. But ultimately it was a lost cause, with an incredible Fresta three-pointer in the dying stages putting an exclamation mark on a deserved 75-49 win by Devils. In the round’s other matches, Ciggy Butts whooped Green Hornets 48-27, Spare Parts were too good for Stingrays at 41-35 and the Blue Angels soared over Barras 50-39.
Mistakes cost Roosters again The Atherton Roosters poor start to the 2017 Cairns District Rugby League premiership continued on Sunday at Williams Park, following a 38-16 loss to Brothers. Again the Roosters were full of mistakes in attack and many promising raids on the Brothers line broke down with poor ball control. Several times the Roosters had the numbers on their opposition, but the final pass was put down. Brothers led 20-4 at the break and it was the Roosters who grabbed first points after the restart to set the scene for a better second stanza. However, the recovery was short lived as the mistakes continued and Brothers were quick to capitalize. Roosters coach Dean Howard said his side just needed to hold the ball and the results would be better. “When we complete our sets we can make the yards but too many times the ball is handed over on the first couple of tackles,” said Howard. “It was very hot in Cairns on Sunday and that also didn’t help, as we used all our energy in defence.” The Roosters will have a break this weekend with the competition bye.

THE next generation of Mareeba Gladiators stars have started their journey to A-grade under a new junior player program. The club’s Emerging Talent squad had their first run at Davies Park last Wednesday, part of a 10-week program designed to develop the best and brightest 12 to 14-yearold players. Mareeba A-grade coach and junior development officer Tye Ingebrigtsen said the program would teach players enhanced skills which they could then take back to their respective teams. “I think it’s important to give these kids as much development as we can,” he said. “These programs are in place down south and all the clubs in Brisbane have similar ones.” Ingebrigtsen said catching and passing, two-on-one defence and marker work will be just some of the skills taught over the course of the program. “We’ll try and touch base with everything we can over the 10 weeks and hopefully they’ll get some enjoyment out of it as well,” he said. A similar program, established by Ingebrigtsen at his former club Hervey Bay, also had success.
“One of our players from that Emerging Talent squad ended up getting a contract with the Cronulla Sharks last year after going down there for a development camp,” he said. The program will also involve A-grade players, including co-captain and former junior Ian King, and junior coaches. Ingebrigtsen will oversee all training. A similar program will be held in three or four months time for the club’s 15 to 17-year-old players, to be known as a Development Squad. “Our A-grade side hasn’t got many local juniors, and that’s probably something the club has struggled to do in keeping these players interested,” Ingebrigtsen said. “It’s going to take a few years to get these programs off and running but the club are happy with them and hopefully they’ll continue into the future.” Junior club president Darrin Hastie said he was excited by the program’s potential. “Leaning from the A-graders, they’ll see how the pros do it, take that back to their team and encourage the other players,” he said. “Hopefully these kids will have a goal to one day play for Mareeba A-grade and search for the stars.”

TOUGH LOSS: The Mareeba Gladiators struggled in the heat after losing against the Yarrabah Seahawks last Sunday. PICTURE: RACHEL ARANCIO
Gators suffer first loss MAREEBA Gladiators have suffered their first loss of the season after being thumped 44-22 by Yarrabah on Sunday. Riding high on confidence following victories against Atherton and Innisfail, the Gators just couldn’t match the Seahawks’ intensity at Jilara Oval. Gladiators coach Tye Ingebrigtsen said the hot conditions were draining for his men. “The heat got to our bigger boys today. It was our first day game,” he said. “They just ran us around and played smart footy and we didn’t adapt.” Yarrabah’s win makes it the third in a row for the team this season, who now sit top of the table on six points.
Despite the loss, Ingebrigtsen praised hooker Clint Posselt, who put in a man of the match performance with his determination and consistency on the field. “He was unreal. He just worked hard all game,” Ingebrigtsen said. The Gators will face the Cairns Kangaroos this Sunday at Vico Oval in another afternoon clash. “Obviously we’ve got to make sure that we’re ready to go,” he said. “I’m pretty confident in the boys, the attitude was good after the game against Yarrabah. “We know what we need to work hard on. I’ve got no doubts we’ll put in a really good performance on Sunday.”
Bulls goalie stars in victory A RONNIE Leporati master class has helped the Mareeba Bulls secure a gritty 2-1 victory over Marlin Coast Rangers on Saturday night. Filling in for Adrian Vedelago, the veteran shot stopper was in vintage form, performing a number of spectacular saves that kept Mareeba in the fight. The Bulls put some early pressure on the home team in the first half at Pennell Field, with some good movements around the 18 yard box. The Rangers responded, pouncing on some defensive blunders by Mareeba to create several chances and keep Leporati busy at the back. The deadlock was broken at the 29th minute, when midfielder Wayne Srhoj slotted a well placed ball past Marlin Coast keeper Gianmarco D’Oria to go 1-0 up. The Bulls’ lead appeared short-lived when Marlin Coast’s Kimon Toumazos was brought down in the box in the 38th minute. But, incredibly, Leporati managed to save the resulting kick with an instinctive dive to keep a clean sheet. Their keeper’s heroics inspired Mareeba to make another push up the field, with a cross by striker Steven Cater finding midfielder Jaydon Wells, who headed it home in the 44th minute to go 2-0 up. A fast and furious opening to the sec-
ond half showed the Rangers were in no mood to quit, their efforts rewarded in the 51st minute when Kyle Nichol found the back of the net. But momentum slowed as the game became a scrappy affair involving several fouls and yellow cards. That culminated in a red card given to Jeffrey Lassche in the 70th minute following a rough tackle. Despite being reduced to 10 men, the Rangers almost made it 2-all in the 75th minute after Leporati dropped the ball making a routine save and scrambled to recover it just before it crossed the goal line. The Bulls responded, creating several chances and holding out to seal the game at 2-1. Bulls coach Alex Srhoj said it was important his side got the three points after their round one loss against Stratford. “Now we’ve got some confidence, now we’re back to believing what we can do and things will get better,” he said. “It was just a gutsy effort by everyone. We had to fight for that.” The Bulls will now have to back up their victory with an FFA Cup game against Innisfail in Cairns tonight, followed by their regular season match against Edge Hill at home this Sunday. The Mareeba ladies side continued their winning streak recording a 4-2 win, while the reserves went down 4-2.
