92-YEAR-OLD Edna Beazley of Atherton has been an exhibitor at the Atherton Show for the past 69 years. Since 1947, Edna has entered her creations in just about every section – including woodburning, rugs, dressed dolls and many more. This week the Atherton Show Society presented Edna with a special certificate of recognition for her work. Her granddaughter Renay Fitzgerald (who is one of 48 grand children) also entered in the cooking and homemade cards sections this year.

Road to ruin By Michael Serenc

A BOTCHED bypass planned for Mareeba could force a local farmer off his prime agricultural land. Mango and cane farmer Tony Falvo, who

owns a 57 ha property along Mareeba-Dimbulah Rd, said a planned bypass through to the Mulligan Highway would cut his farm in two, making it impossible to irrigate. “It makes a viable agricultural farm unviable because it breaks up the infrastructure,” he said.

“We are in favour of the road but we want someone to have some land management sense.” A Department of Transport and Main Roads (TMR) spokeswoman said the department was continuing to consult with “stakeholders, including local businesses, residents and property own-

ers, about the proposed bypass as investigations progress”. “The proposed road alignment to the west of Mareeba has been identified as part of our longterm strategic planning activities,” she said. CONTINUED PAGE 3

Tablelands Relay For Life organising committee members Robert Blake, Trisha Spry and Mary Graham are encouraging locals to register for this year’s Tablelands Relay For Life

TABLELANDERS are being urged to sign up for the fight against cancer by registering early for this year’s Relay For Life event. With early bird registrations closing on July 29, Tablelands Relay For Life committee chairman Gavin Johnson encouraged the community to get on board. “It’s a great community event to be involved in,” he said. “Along with the fun events that teams hold to raise funds in the fight against cancer, the relay is an entertaining and fun event that people of all ages can enjoy.” Mr Johnson hoped to see a return to 40 or 50 teams participating like the early years of the annual event.

“It’s always great to have a few more school and youth teams at the event too,” he added. The relay involves teams of up to 15 people keeping a baton moving by either walking or running for 18 hours. To date, more than $23,000 has been raised for this year’s event, with all proceeds going towards Cancer Council Queensland. This year’s relay will be held on October 22-23 at Davies Park, Mareeba. To register a team or volunteer, head to www.relayforlife.org.au or call 1300 65 65 85. Registration paid by July 29 is $20 per person (early bird), and registration paid from July 30 onwards is $30 per person.

THREE Tablelands veterinary students have shared in a $1000 bursary to assist with their studies. JCU students Sam Kopra, Yvette Jarman and Kara Smith were officially presented with the bursary by Tablelands Regional Council Division 3 councillor Anthony Ball earlier this month. The TRC bursary recognises aca-

demic excellence by a JCU undergraduate student studying at Tableland Veterinary Service (TVS). But Ms Kopra, Ms Jarman and Ms Smith all proved too hard to split. “We are very appreciative of council’s support. The students love coming to Malanda, and it is one of the highlights of their studies,” said TVS direc-

“We could certainly look at other sectors such as health and aged care following this model and providing employment and training opportunities in the region,” he said. Ms Jarman said the bursary would help with the cost of textbooks while Ms Smith said it would aid the cost of travel to attend placements.

Farmer in land stoush FROM PAGE 1

“We acknowledge the potential economic benefits of fast-tracking the northern section of the bypass and have conducted preliminary investigations into a cost-effective route linking the Mulligan Highway and Mareeba-Dimbulah Rd.” The Express understands the land required for the bypass, about 4.5km long, has already been gazetted by TMR. Mr Falvo said a workable solution would be for TMR to use an adjacent narrow corridor of land owned by State water provider Sunwater for the bypass instead. The corridor, about 20m wide, borders Mr Falvo’s property and the Mareeba rodeo grounds and provides a straighter path for the bypass. If built there, Mr Falvo could keep his land in one piece, telling The Express he would even be willing to give up a small strip, in conjunction with the rodeo grounds, to accommodate the road. “Why can’t the bypass go there without having to wreck agricultural farms or anybody else’s property?,” the second-generation farmer asked. If built, the bypass would be the first of two stages. A second bypass, about 4km long, is planned from Mareeba-Dimbulah Rd through to the Kennedy Highway, giving heavy vehicles a much-needed alternative road to Mareeba’s congested town centre along Byrnes St. But no timeframes have been set by TMR to construct either bypass at this stage. Mr Falvo will meet with TMR officials this week to discuss his concerns. PICTURED: Mareeba farmer Tony Falvo fears a bypass planned by the Department of Transport and Main Roads could ruin his farm.

A NARROW Coalition election victory could still make Kennedy MP Bob Katter a major powerbroker on key legislation in parliament. Mr Katter warned a slim majority could spell chaos for the government, who declared victory on Sunday, with the absence of any Coalition MP from parliament meaning a deciding vote could fall to him and other crossbenchers. “You try running a government with one vote up your sleeve,” he said. “You take the risk of what happened to Julia Gillard — you are flying on a couple of votes, even a little nobody like me can knock you out of the ball game.” Mr Katter announced his support for the Turnbull Government last Thursday, guaranteeing supply and confidence in the event of a hung parliament. “I do so with no great enthusiasm,” he told reporters at a press conference after meeting with Prime Minister Malcolm Turnbull.

“I have very close relationships with people like Anthony Albanese and Wayne Swan, which have yielded great benefits for Australia and I do not intend to damage those friendships.” But Mr Katter was quick to put conditions on his support, saying “all bets were off” if there was “the slightest hint of union bashing”. “I maintain my right to move at any point of time in another direction,” he said. Mr Katter issued both Labor and Coalition powerbrokers with a laundry list of demands in the days following July 2’s election result. That included more dams, development of the ethanol industry, re-regulating electricity prices and an increase to two million head of cattle in Cape York. He has also argued for the government to restrict immigration to three minority groups – Jews, Sikhs and Middle Eastern Christians.

WE DID IT: Cairns and Hinterland Hospital and Health Service Board Chair Carolyn Eagle, Dalrymple MP Shane Knuth, Health Minister Cameron Dick, local advocate Gaye Taylor, Director of Nursing Glenda Fabris and former Mareeba Shire Mayor Mick Borzi celebrate Dimbulah getting a new health clinic.

DOZENS of Dimbulah locals rolled out the welcome mat for State Health Minister Cameron Dick during his tour of Tablelands health facilities last weekend. Mr Dick was given a rockstar welcome by locals when he arrived at the town’s Primary Healthcare Clinic on Saturday, barely a month after announcing $4.5 million for a replacement clinic. Dignitaries including former Mareeba mayor Mick Borzi and Dalrymple MP Shane Knuth met with Mr Dick as he toured the ageing facility. “Thanks to your commitment to your community and your passion, you were able to make a strong case to government,” Mr Dick told the crowd that had gathered. “Our government is committed to ensuring Queenslanders have access to modern, quality health facilities wherever they live.” The clinic, which has been run out of the same building since 1964, has been the subject of an intense 15-month lobbying effort. The asbestos-ridden building sees hundreds of patients a week and is bursting at the seams.

Dimbulah representative on Mareeba Hospital’s Queensland Coalition of Australian Governments committee, Gaye Taylor said it had been a long fight to get funding for a new facility. “We’re so grateful to the minister and he’s listened very carefully,” she said. “For the community, it means people can stay here without having to worry about driving 45km to Mareeba. “This new facility will really enhance confidence in our town…This a stepping stone for future growth.” Planning for the new clinic began this month and will be built over two years. Cairns and Hinterland Hospital and Health Service (CHHHS) board chair Carolyn Eagle said construction of the new Dimbulah PHC was a high priority. “Specifications of the new centre will be determined during the service and design planning phase of the project. The project will commence once this process is complete,” she said. Mr Dick also toured Atherton Hospital briefly earlier that day.

Ratch in wind farm takeover RATCH Australia has moved to take over the entire Mt Emerald Wind Farm project from Far North developer Port Bajool. The latest development in the $360 million project comes after Ergon Energy agreed in May to buy all of the electricity generated by the wind farm through to the end of 2030. The agreement, which is subject to approval by the Foreign Investment Review Board, was struck late last month. Port Bajool director John Morris said he had no qualms about selling his 50 per cent stake to RATCH, which is 80 per cent owned by major Thai power generation company, Ratchaburi Electricity Generating Holding PCL. “There was always an option to do that and we’re very pleased they’ve exercised it,” he said. “We have always worked well with them and we will continue to work with them.” Port Bajool will now focus on developing the company’s planned Asia Pacific Energy Innovation Centre which will be built on the wind farm’s 2400 ha site. Discussions have also begun to

create world class mountain bike trails and walking tracks within the site. “It will benefit the whole region,” Mr Morris said. “We want to make sure the community benefits so we will be consulting and working with the community.” Mr Morris said both the centre and trails would be constructed in tandem with the wind farm development. The project, which has approval from both the Queensland and Australian governments, includes up to 53 turbines to potentially generate enough electricity to power 75,000 homes each year. It is expected to create 150 jobs during the wind farm’s construction, with the pre-construction phase to be rolled out over the next six months. Once operational, 15 permanent staff will be employed. Mareeba Shire mayor Tom Gilmore said he had no concerns about the wind farm’s change of ownership. “I presume that it will continue, as proposed, to provide renewable energy to Far North Queensland,” he said.

An open letter to the people of Mareeba and surrounds

PLANNED FO

R

MAREEBA

Recently, you may have heard of plans to bring a new $21 million shopping precinct to Mareeba. Given that the information is now in the public domain, the developer is thrilled to announce its plans for this once in a generation development. Local developer, Reedlodge Pty Ltd, has been working for a number of years to bring an exciting new retail shopping precinct to Byrnes Street, Mareeba. Reedlodge’s vision is to bring a modern and exciting precinct to the town, which will offer variety and convenience to local shoppers. Should the development proceed, the precinct is intended to house a full size supermarket and a variety of specialty stores. With over 7000m2 under roof, and more than 200 car parks, the precinct will become Mareeba’s largest shopping complex. Recently, and after years of hard work, Reedlodge has secured further land which is required to bring this exciting opportunity to fruition. Now, only one final piece to the puzzle remains to make this development a reality. Reedlodge has been working very closely with Mareeba Shire Council to secure a small triangular parcel of land which is essential to make this all happen. The Councillors have listened carefully, and have entered into a constructive dialogue with Reedlodge’s representatives as we seek their support for the acquisition of the land. Reedlodge is excited to be working with Council and has been inspired by their positive outlook and approach. Together, we are certain that this development can quickly turn from concept to reality. As a local company, Reedlodge is committed to creating opportunities and growing Mareeba. At a time when our town is crippled with astronomically high youth unemployment, the precinct stands to create over 200-220 direct and indirect jobs during its construction phase and between 200-250 direct and indirect jobs once operational; thereby offering the opportunity for our youth to enter the workforce. In the coming months, information will be made available regarding tenancy opportunities within the development. In the meantime, rest assured that we remain focused and driven to ensure that this exciting development comes to life and brings growth to Mareeba. Visit our facebook page ‘Grow Mareeba’ to find out more and keep up to date with the latest developments on this project. Reedlodge Pty Ltd

Tablelands mayor Joe Paronella is comfortable with this year’s council budget.

Specials Available from Wednesday 13th July to Tuesday 19th July 2016

Steady budget for year ahead “It’s in line with what we need to do and it is basically the cost of doing business between the three shires that all had different rates,” Cr Paronella said. “There certainly will be a noticeable difference in some fees (compared to 2015/16) but it’s not all bad news.” Mr Paronella said council wanted to focus on providing its traditional “high quality grass roots services” for ratepayers and improving infrastructure across the shire. That includes the $5 million Ravenshoe Sewage Treatment Plant Upgrade, co-funded with the State Government, which is due to start construction in September. “We will be able to continue to deliver significant upgrades and improvements through a nearly $30 million capital budget with a much more modest rate increase,” Cr Paronella said.

Sewage plant goes to tender TENDERS will be sought to upgrade Ravenshoe’s ailing sewage plant as the project moves closer to its September start date. Tablelands Regional Council is considering two treatment process options for the Ravenshoe Sewage Treatment Plant (RSTP), which was first built in 1960. They are the Intermittent Activated Sludge (IAS) process, which is estimated to cost between $3.1 million and $3.4 million before

GST, and the Membrane Bioreactor (MBR) process, expected to cost between $4.1 million and $4.5 million before GST. Council has a budget of $5 million for the project, with $2.5 million coming from the State Government’s Building our Regions program. Division 2 councillor Annette Haydon said a new treatment plant was long overdue for the town. “It’s great for Ravenshoe. The existing plant has done its job and out-

lived its design life,” she said. “Our staff are always down there every day doing maintenance on it.” Cr Haydon said the plant’s capacity could be expanded as the town’s population grew. Tablelands mayor Joe Paronella said the RSTP was a priority project for council and had the potential to create 15 jobs. Construction will begin in September, with work expected to be completed by November 2017.

TABLELANDS ratepayers will not have to fear another massive rates hike as council prepares to hand down its budget next Wednesday. Mayor Joe Paronella said rates would be lower than the 7.54 per cent originally forecast for 2016/17, after a horror 12 per cent hike during the last financial year. “It is a budget that is the best we as council can do at the moment to service the community within our means,” he said. “Seeking innovative ways to deliver services and reduce our costs are at the forefront of our actions in preparing the 2016/17 budget.” In a prelude to the budget, council handed down its regional planning fees and charges at last Thursday’s meeting with the aim of streamlining costs across the former Atherton, Eacham and Herberton shires.

IMPRESSIVE: An artist’s impression of the proposed $21 million shopping centre for Mareeba. IMAGE: REEDLODGE PTY LTD

Hundreds of jobs for centre THIS is the proposed shopping centre set to revolutionise Mareeba’s retail sector. Revealed by The Express last week, the ambitious $21 million project will generate hundreds of direct and indirect jobs if developer Reedlodge Pty Ltd can clear two final hurdles. The artist’s impression (pictured) features a modern, tropical design and will house a major supermarket plus several specialist retail stores. But for the centre to become a reality, Reedlodge must first gain council approval to purchase a small block of state-owned land about 1000m2 in size. Council is trustee over the land in question. The block would add to Reedlodge’s existing 12,403m2 of land situated across from Mareeba Plaza along Byrnes St, allowing the company to proceed with a development application. If approved, Reedlodge solicitor Pietro Girgenti said construction of the centre would take between 12 and 18 months, generating between 200 and 220 direct and indirect jobs. Once built, the 7000m2 centre is expected to sustain between 200 and 250 direct and indirect jobs. “We do see this project as being a significant shot in the arm for employment opportunities generally but especially for our young people,” Mr Girgenti said. “What we do find in regional towns like Mareeba is there is a drain on our youth be-

Why am I crook?

At the Black Dog Institute we’ve done some research that looks at different types of depression and considers the causes. With both types, it’s not about blaming anyone for it: mental illness is not a choice we make! Our research suggests that there are two dominant subtypes. Melancholic depression Melancholia comes from the Greek term for sadness. This type only affects 10% of people

Non-melancholic depression It’s believed that up to 90% of people with depression suffer this type. It’s not primarily biological in cause. Instead, this depression often arises in response to life events and stresses. Life events can take a heavy toll on our mental and physical well-being. If we are struggling to find a job or dealing with difficult relationships we are more likely to become depressed.

a chronic illness of another sort can drain us emotionally and lead to depression. When we get sick it’s only natural to want to know why. With mental illness the answer can be complex but it’s very important not to think you’re to blame. Talking with friends, family and health care professions can help us to understand our own unique story as well as the common experiences people have when dealing with the dreaded black dog.

CELEBRATING

THIS SUNDAY JULY 17th FROM 12 NOON

105 YEARS Malanda Hotel makes history The iconic Malanda Hotel will celebrate 105 years in Malanda this Sunday. Below is the steep history of the largest timber hotel in Australia. PATRICK English was the first licensed victualler for the Malanda Hotel which was opened on Saturday July 8, 1911, in the grand ballroom. The following day saw the official opening of the railway and a special excursion train arrived. The train arrived at Malanda at 1.30pm, where ninety people travelled on the train and along with the locals from the area, it was a full house for the new hotel. On the September 6, 1911, two months after the opening, the license was transferred to Catherine English, Patrick's mother. The English family decided to move from the farm house on portion 39 to live at the hotel. The Malanda Hotel, now completely finished staged their official opening on Boxing Day 1911. The hotel was packed out and a sports meeting, including woodchops was held on Malanda's unmade street in front. At night, the balcony of the hotel was a dance floor. It was a huge event and everyone in the area attended. The hotel was a wooden building, with twelve bedrooms on the top floor, a bar section, dining room, store room, cellar and kitchen on the ground floor. Stables for the horses were provided at the back of the buildings. With the men in the English family busy working, much of the running of the hotel was left to Catherine and her two daughters Mary and Elizabeth, who

were very capable and managed the hotel with pride and dedication. In 1917 another section was added to the Malanda Hotel on the English Street side with the work being completed in 1920. This consisted of a further twenty two rooms on the top floor and six shops on the ground floor. A separate building was constructed as staff quarters. On March 29, 1922 the Malanda Hotel was sold to John (Jack) Hanrahan for 10,000 pounds and license transferred to him. Jack Hanrahan married Mary English in September 1922. Jack had arrived to the Atherton area in the early 1900's. Jack's cousin Robert McHugh built the Millaa Millaa Hotel and was an Eacham Shire councillor and chairman for many years. After selling the hotel, the English family moved to a new house on the hill above town and Mrs Catherine English died four years later in 1926. In 1928 the Hanrahan's extended the hotel along James Street with an extra dining room, second bar and a magnificent timber featured lounge/ball room with an elaborate staircase made of local cabinet timbers. Maple and oak were used extensively and local cabinet maker Wally Anderson was responsible for the panelling, staircase, an extra dining area and a second bar. The architect was Bob Hassel and builder Len Garvey. It consisted of 11

bedrooms, ladies and gents bathrooms and toilets on the top floor. On the ground floor were the large lounge, dining room, and bar. Malanda now had the largest hotel to be built on the Tableland. The opening of the new extension was attended by a huge crowd, followed by a dinner, entertainment and dancing. In 1962 five hotel units were added to the James Street side and this complemented the hotel accommodation. The Hanrahan's had two children and the family lived at the hotel, Mrs Mary Hanrahan died 1947. Son Keith and his new wife Maureen took over the running of the hotel in 1949, but Jack continued being very involved with the business until his death in 1970. Jack Hanrahan lived to an old age, always active around the hotel and was known as ' the grand old man of Malanda'. Keith Hanrahan sold the hotel to Tom English in 1976 after it had been in the Hanrahan name for a period of 54 years. Keith Hanrahan and Tom English are both grandsons of James English who built the original hotel. Tom continued to operate the hotel with the same traditions which have become a landmark for Malanda. The Malanda Hotel is now leased by Tom's son Michael and grandson Jeff.

ABOVE: The grand opening of the Malanda Hotel in 1905 and the Hotel today.

Come and celebrate with us The Malanda Hotel invites the whole community to join in the 105th anniversary festivities from lunch time this Sunday. Interstate and local woodchoppers will compete in a five event program at 1pm. Plus there will be merry-go-rounds and face painting for the kids, a sizzling BBQ throughout the afternoon, as well as music during the day. From 1.30pm you can join in and test your skills in the Tom English singles pool competition. The Hotel will be open for dinner Sunday evening and patrons are encouraged to stay on and enjoy the night. A huge thank you must go to the sponsors who have contributed to the celebration of the 105th anniversary in Malanda, including: Malanda Meat Co, Gadgarra Sawmill, Malanda Raw Materials, Bull at a Gate Fencing and logging and the WW Group.

2016 MAREEBA RODEO JULY 15-17

Rodeo action all weekend!!

Bumper rodeo set to wow locals

ALL the thrills and spills will be back better than ever at this year’s Mareeba Rodeo. From sideshow alley to bull riding and the much-loved agricultural show, Mareeba District Rodeo Association secretary Angela Sturgess said the organising committee had left nothing to chance. Starting with Friday night’s procession down Byrnes St, the action really kicks into gear at Kerribee Park on Saturday and Sunday. “It’s going to be a blockbuster,” she said. “Every year is unique because it’s always a different set of circumstances and every year we try to make it bigger, better and more dynamic.” An increase in prize money will have the rodeo’s cowboys jumping for joy while punters in Kerribee Park’s arena will also be able to view the action-packed horse and bull events on a giant, 40m2 screen. 54 male and female riders are competing in this year’s rodeo festival, which kicked off last weekend with cutting and several horse sports. Outside of the arena, revellers can enjoy various trade stalls, appearances by rodeo queens, the annual woodchop competition and live entertainment on Saturday night. Local community groups such as Scouts and Rotary will also make their presence felt. Mrs Sturgess said she could feel the atmosphere building already as up to 400 locals and grey nomads set up camp at the rodeo grounds for the two-day event. “It’s really exciting, I’m thinking we’re going to have a large crowd this year,” she said. “Come to the rodeo, even if you haven’t been in a few years. You’ll be surprised by the changes. “There’s a lot to see and do…It really is a huge event.”

Downtown parade fun

Rodeo action all weekend!!

With only days to go until the Mareeba Rodeo, President Jim Blakeney reflects on his 32 years as President and welcomes one and all in 2016...

BEFORE the rodeo action kicks off on Saturday, make sure you bring the whole family along to the Mareeba Mazda monster downtown parade, mardi gras and crowning ceremony this Friday night. The parade, held along Byrnes Street, kicks off at 7.45pm with the crowning of the Queen at the conclusion of the parade.

THE Mareeba Rodeo has grown from humble beginnings in 1949 at Davies Park, and as the 67th annual Mareeba Rodeo approaches, I reflect on the 32 years I have been president of this great local organisation and the wonderful people I have come to know both privately and through the many committee members we have had over the years. As this my final year as president, I take this opportunity to wish the incoming president all the best. Our Annual General Meeting is in November, and if you feel you can contribute something to this great organisation I encourage you to attend. Since the move to Kerribee Park in 1979 a lot of blood sweat and tears by many locals went into the venue we see today. I would like to take this opportunity to thank all the sponsors who support the event, the many volunteers, whom without, the rodeo would simply not take

place and finally, the people who attend to make the rodeo one of the best in the land. I would like to wish all the queen entrants best of luck, and to their sponsors a huge thank you for making the effort to add color and glamour to this wonderful event. To all the businesses who have participated in the spirit of the Mareeba Rodeo, thank you. To those who entered the competition as part of the Agricultural Show, thank you for your continued support. To the matrons of honor who do terrific jobs with all the queen contestants, the competitors and the general public, our heartfelt thanks for your unwavering support. We trust that you all have a wonderful time at the big downtown parade on Friday night and all the thrills and spills of the action packed rodeo on the weekend.

Spectators will be pleased to know that we will have a big screen again so every spectator can see the action from any vantage point. Please come along and kick up your heels at the cabaret on Saturday night and enjoy the festivities. Finally I would like to thank Angela Sturgess our secretary, my wife Shirley and our current committee members whose tireless efforts will be there for all to see over the coming days. I leave you all in good hands, by this time next year the new stands will be up and a new chapter at the Mareeba Rodeo commences Please enjoy, goodbye and stay safe.

BARELY three months after Mareeba’s annual rodeo wraps up, Angela Sturgess is already planning for the next one. The Mareeba District Rodeo Association secretary has been the driving force behind organising the popular since officially stepping into the role three years ago after decades spent as a volunteer. But even now, the mum-of-two is keeping it real. “The best laid plans always go wrong,” she unapologetically told The Express. “You’ve got to be flexible…and you’ve got to distance yourself when people come and criticise you because it’s not you they’re criticising, it’s the position.” Mrs Sturgess is well aware of the enormous amount of time and effort it takes to pull off Mareeba’s biggest annual event. There’s arranging sponsorship,

organising entertainment, riders, marquees, clubs, festival events and much, much more – right down to the all-important portaloos. In the final few weeks leading up to the rodeo itself, Mrs Sturgess can spend as much as 15 hours a day in the office to ensure the event goes off without a hitch. “It’s not “rodeo”, it’s the “Mareeba Rodeo” that I’m passionate about,” she said. “This is my town, this is my community, rodeo’s our biggest annual event and it does a lot of good.” Mrs Sturgess is full of praise for the team around her, a 180-strong army of workers dedicated to making sure everything runs like clockwork. “Without the volunteers, this would be an absolute nightmare,” she said. “It’s the same people doing the same job year in, year out but thank goodness they come and do it. “I’m eternally grateful for that.”

Swansong for our Jim At the helm of the Mareeba Rodeo for the past 32 years, Jim Blakeney will step down from his role as president in November. It marks the end of an era for the rodeo as the event continues to go from strengthto-strength. We sit down with the town’s favourite cowboy. IN 32 years as president of the Mareeba District Rodeo Association, Jim Blakeney reckons things haven’t changed all that much. There’s the spectacle of Friday night’s lively procession as the town unites together to view its stunning rodeo queens. There’s the dirt and dust of Kerribee Park’s arena as one cowboy after another gets thrown sky high by an angry bull. And then there’s the smile and laughter of children as they have a ball running through sideshow alley. The 74-year-old will step down from his role as president this November, capping off a memorable time in charge of Australia’s second biggest rodeo. “32 years is too long anyhow,” Mr Blakeney quipped. “As you get older, it becomes more of a job than when you were younger.” The father-of-three and grandfather-of-eight was instrumental in bringing the rodeo to Kerribee Park

www.theexpressnewspaper.com.au

from its original location at Davies Park way back in 1979. With the help of his brothers and volunteers, Mr Blakeney helped build the park’s original arena grandstands which still stand today. They are set to be replaced by new steel frames from next year. “The rodeo is entertainment for the district that people like and we like it,” he said. “My family’s been behind me, my wife, children, son-in-laws and the grandkids so it’s all been pretty easy.” From its early foundations, Mr Blakeney ran a cattle property in the region for 20 years until 2002, breeding horses and cattle for the rodeo until it became popular enough for outside entries to pick up the slack. Mr Blakeney and his wife Shirley will now stay on as caretakers of the rodeo grounds and remain on the committee, offering a little bit of wisdom and advice to the next generation. “It’s been our life,” she said.

Punters in for a bucking good time NON-stop action is set to storm Kerribee Park’s arena this weekend, as several horse and cattle events make their return to the Mareeba Rodeo. Rough stock events such as bull riding, saddle bronc riding, trick riding and the much-loved State of Origin contest are set to excite the crowd this weekend. Mareeba District Rodeo Association secretary Angela Sturgess said State of Origin was particularly popular amongst both the crowd and riders. “It’s an us against them mentality. We really get into it,” she said. “It’s a highlight.” In addition to bull riding and saddle bronc riding,

Origin competitors will also face off in barrel racing, bareback riding, breakaway roping and steer wrestling. Mrs Sturgess said the performance from HLS Trick Riding was set to wow the crowd on Saturday night before returning on Sunday. “They’re fast and dynamic,” she said. “It really showcases the trust shown in the horse and the ability of the rider because they do running, swinging, jumping on and off, handstands, all that sort of thing as the horses are galloping. “It just adds a bit more pizazz and a bit more pace.”

THE LAND Veg laws still up in the air LANDHOLDERS are no closer to getting a verdict on the State Government’s controversial vegetation management laws, despite the recommendations of a parliamentary committee. Handed down on June 30, the State Agriculture and Environment Committee’s report on the proposed Vegetation Management (Reinstatement) and Other Legislation Amendment Bill 2016 gave five recommendations. Central to those were a request to improve the accuracy of vegetation mapping and the removal of a clause which reverses the onus of proof of illegal clearing on the landholder instead of the State Government. While the bipartisan committee was unable to reach a majority decision on whether the Bill should be passed, it did agree unanimously with the recommendations outlined. However the recommendations are non-binding, leaving the Bill at the mercy of the State Government. Dalrymple MP Shane Knuth said while the recommendation to scrap the reverse onus of proof clause was encouraging, the entire Bill needed to be thrown out. Regardless of how the onus of proof is determined, farmers can still face a maximum five years jail or about $736,000 in fines if found guilty of illegal land clearing. If passed, the laws would also be retrospective, taking effect from the date the Bill was introduced into parliament on March 17. Parliament is expected to vote on the laws in August.

The fight against navua sedge continues on the Tablelands. PICTURE: QUEENSLAND GOVERNMENT.

Long fight for the sedge THE Tablelands could become part of a Queensland-first trial to eradicate navua sedge, if the State Government can be swayed. State Agriculture minister Leanne Donaldson toured a Malanda property infested by the weed two weeks ago alongside local councillors, landholders and Dalrymple MP Shane Knuth. The owner of the Malanda property, environment scientist Dr Geraldine McGuire, was able to brief Ms Donaldson on the scope of the sedge issue. Mr Knuth hinted Ms Donaldson may be

Tablelands Regional Council is hoping the minister will agree to $570,000 worth of funding to combat the devastating weed. The money would be spent on vehicles, quick spray units and the establishment of a dedicated taskforce to eradicate the weed. But Knuth warned the fight against sedge was long term and more money would be required. “That’s a start but obviously we’ll need recur-

ring funding to continue to pursue this,” he said. “We can get on top of this, but it will take a lot of research money and resources.” Mr Knuth said he would also be engaging Premier Annastacia Palaszczuk to highlight the seriousness of the issue. “We really want to get to this very quickly,” he said. Navua sedge is capable of producing up to 500 million seeds per hectare, with the potential to reduce grazing and pasture capacity by up to 40 per cent.

Milling Effets, Panstage and Boiler stations all contributed to plant downtime with both mechanical and operational issues. High incoming dirt loadings continued to wear out the cane shredder hammer tips until all tips were replaced with high wear resistance tungsten to increase useful life. This incoming dirt loading is carrying through to the boilers with the bagasse fuel and at times choking the grates to a point where they need to be air lanced to be able to open and operate correctly. The CCS and cane purity is increasing from the Tableland area allowing for better management of the pan floor although the sugar produced to date has not met the full quality standards with low pol sugar produced.

Crush statistiCs: • Mossman tonnes crushed for the week: 34,831 tonnes • CCS for week: 10.68 • Total cane crushed to date: 98,731 tonnes • CCS average to date: 10.31 • 2016 crop estimate: 850,000 tonnes

INDEPENDENCE DAY: RESURGENCE

We always knew they were coming back. Using recovered alien technology, the nations of Earth have collaborated on an immense defence program to protect the planet. But nothing can prepare us for the aliens' advanced and unprecedented force. Only the ingenuity of a few brave men and women can bring our world back from the brink of extinction. Review by Louise Keller: The plot and dialogue get a bit fuzzy at times, but the film plays as expected: a boys own adventure generously endowed with scale, stupendous visual effects and a blend of old and new characters that rally together to save the world. Twenty years after the original film, director Roland Emmerich relies on the formulaic, placing the accent on action, relationships and humour, ensuring

all the boxes are ticked for the fans. We get to see the aliens close up and frequently. And yes, there is green slime. As for the details of the plot, some of it went over my head, although it is impossible to miss the final resolution in a dramatic and extended finale.

GHOSTBUSTERS

Ghostbusters makes its long-awaited return, rebooted with a cast of new characters. Thirty years after the beloved original took the world by storm, director Paul Feig brings his take to the supernatural comedy, joined by Melissa McCarthy, Kristen Wiig, Kate McKinnon, Leslie Jones, and Chris Hemsworth. This summer, they’re here to save the world.

In Memoriam

GOJKO ZELENIKA 10th May, 1940 ~~~~~ 17th July, 2015

You toiled so hard for those you loved, You said goodbye to none. Your spirit flew before we knew‚ Your work on earth was done. We miss you now‚ our hearts are sore‚ As time goes by we miss you more. Your loving smile‚ your gentle face, No one can fill your vacant place. Your life was love and labour, Your love for your family true. You did the best for all of us, We will always remember you. Deeply loved and missed, Ivanka, Zdenka, Paul, Jelena, Glen, Suzi, Jamie & Families.

GOJKO ZELENIKA (Dedo Gojko)

17-07-2015 We really miss you Dedo and we wish that you were here, To hug us with your loving arms and lend a kindly ear. Life goes on as always, but things seem out of place, Now that we can’t call on you, or see your smiling face. Although it’s really painful, to think that you are gone, We know you’re in a better place, when all is said and done. We never will forget you, and we’ll never be apart, In all the special memories, we keep inside our hearts. Forever loved and missed by your grandchildren Daniel, Gojkica, Brianna, Matthew, Luke & Ivanka.

Atherton Roosters captain/coach Dean Howard in Sunday’s 29-18 win over Kangaroos.

THE Atherton Roosters look to be back on pace for a 2016 finals spot following Sunday’s 29-18 away win over Kangaroos at Vico Oval. Sunday’s round 15 match was tight until the 66th minute when the Roosters crossed for a quick double through Adam Molloy and Sylvester Pabai – giving them an eleven point buffer for fulltime. After leading 14-12 at the break, the Roosters lifted their defensive effort for the second session and at times had Kangaroos struggling to stay in the contest. Although guilty of some poor ball handling, the Roosters were able to string together several strong attacking raids to outscore their opposition six tries to three. In the under 18’s match a double try scoring effort from prop James Doyle highlighted the teams 28-24 win over Kangaroos, which keeps the young

Roosters in the top five finals race. In reserve grade, a strong start from Kangaroos was enough to give them a 24-6 win over the Roosters. This Saturday the Atherton Roosters play Suburbs at Gordonvale in all three grades from 3pm. Results in other first grade games played at the weekend: Tully 40 v Mareeba 16, Brothers 28 v Suburbs 18, Ivanhoes 56 v Edmonton 0 and Innisfail 68 v Yarrabah 18. Cairns District Rugby League A grade points table after round 15: Innisfail 30, Ivanhoes 24, Atherton 19, Brothers 19, Mossman 18, Tully 16, Kangaroos 12, Edmonton 12, Yarrabah 9, Suburbs 9, Mareeba 8.

Bulls unstoppable in 3-0 rout

Mareeba Bulls captain Alex Plowman sealed the win with a strong header into the back of net. PHOTO BY LEEVI ELMES.

MAREEBA have firmed up their premiership credentials with a hard-fought 3-0 win over Southside at Borzi Park on Saturday. The Bulls have been in sparkling form at home of late, scoring 22 goals in the past four games, and looked to be off to a flyer when Steven Cater hit the back of the net inside the opening five minutes. The goal was disallowed before Cater had another close one cleared off the line shortly after, the Comets weathering Mareeba’s early charge.

The young side started to use the wide, open spaces and enjoyed some good passages of play against the home side, with the Bulls having to find another gear defensively to keep Southside at bay. Cater finally opened the scoring midway through the first half, keeping it at 1-0 by the break. In the second half the match opened up, and it was the Comets who, possibly with a bit more luck, could have got one back.

The Bulls’ defence again stood tall, bouncing back with a second goal with 15 minutes to go after Robert Pendenza tapped the ball in at the back post. Mareeba captain Alex Plowman finished off the night with a strong header from a Wayne Srhoj corner to seal a 3-0 win in a very tense and tough encounter. Bulls coach Alex Srhoj praised his side’s defensive effort and character, also noting the enthusiasm of the Comets.

Gators foiled yet again

Mareeba Gladiators Clint Posselt in Saturday nights game against Tully.

“We had to work hard tonight, this was probably our toughest match of the year,” he said. “The Comets played well, but our fighting spirit, our strength to find another gear in defence was the difference tonight, then our class came out on top at the end. “All credit to Southside, I can see now why they are sitting where they are on the table, they have really improved.” The Bulls have the bye this weekend before taking on Marlin Coast at home on July 23.

INJURIES and untested combinations have once again come back to bite the Mareeba Gladiators after a disappointing 40-18 defeat at the hands of Tully on Saturday night. The Gators were always going to be up against it facing the CDRL ladder leaders, but were still in the fight at half time, down 12-6 at Davies Park. Injuries to gun fullback Ricky Shave (leg/ankle) and hooker Clint Posselt meant Mareeba coach Josh Stowers had to reshuffle his pack heading into the second half. The disruption opened the floodgates for Tully, piling on the points to close out the game 40-16 despite tries to Shana Aue, Jaden Chong and Ian King. Gladiators vice-president and A-grade trainer Chris Lea said the loss was symptomatic of the side’s season, with injuries and a lack of numbers at training forcing untested combinations on game day. “We’ve got a solid 13 players but we don’t know what our bench is week in, week out,” he said. “It just hurts us…We’re in the game at half-time, but after half-time we just fall apart.” Despite the heavy loss, Lea praised the contributions of lock Ben Cocciolone and second rower King, who was forced to play out of position at five-eighth, linking with young debut halfback Mitch Brim. “Benny killed it again with his work rate. He takes the ball up and tackles with plenty of intent,” he said. “He’s had a good year, he’s been very consistent and very solid.” Lea said the side would benefit from this weekend’s bye, giving them a chance to recharge after a lacklustre season so far. “We do need a break because we haven’t got the depth and have some players carrying injuries,” he said.
