Luck of the Irish
A DASH of luck and a splash of colour was all it took for Graeme Jebreen, Rowena Petersen, Kymberlee Cockrem and Sam Waddell to stand out at Mareeba Turf Club’s St Patrick’s Day Races last Saturday. The group won several categories at Fashions on the Field with their green-themed attire, as about 400 people enjoyed a day of fun-filled entertainment including a full five-race schedule. War on Crocs PHOTO By Peter Roy
Farmers call for action on snappy problem By Michael Serenc A GROUP of Biboohra farmers fear someone will soon be killed unless authorities take action to remove several saltwater crocodiles infesting their properties. The Express can reveal the four farmers have made numerous complaints to the Department of Environment and Heritage Protection (EHP), but no serious action has been taken in attempt to monitor or remove crocodiles in the area. Cattle and cane farmer Evan McGrath said it
beggared belief saltwater crocodiles could be freely lurking this far inland from the coast. “The McGraths have been here since the late 1800s. We have never known there to be any type of crocodile in the area until Peter Fisher established the croc farm,” he said “We always hear we’re in their territory, but this time they’re in our territory.” The farmers’ properties, along Pickford Rd, all border Two Mile Creek, which feeds into Lake Mitchell, otherwise known as Quade’s Dam. Andrew Mazgay, who runs a sand quarry and
farms cane, said he had been lunged at by a saltwater crocodile three times in the last three years, including one incident at Two Mile Creek just last Wednesday. “That morning one came out of the water at me again. Enough is enough,” he said. Mr Mazgay said wildlife officers had set up cameras and croc baits at a waterway on his property on March 2, but had not yet returned to check the cameras, replace their batteries and review the images taken. “It’s just a joke,” he said.

“They put a few chicken necks on a string with some cameras. I rung them up about three-and-ahalf weeks ago to tell them the baits were gone and the ropes had been cut. “No-one’s come out to check the cameras’ memory cards and replace the batteries.” The farmers’ properties are infested with thick hymenachne weeds, creating a perfect environment for crocs to hide in and making it difficult for rangers to conduct patrols in those waterways.

Granite Masonic Lodge treasurer John Collins, master Carl Richardson and secretary Roy Blakeney are offering a $4000 bursary to one lucky young apprentice.
YOUNG tradespeople starting out in their career are being urged to apply for a unique bursary. Mareeba’s Granite Masonic Lodge is offering a $4000 bursary to a deserving male or female trade apprentice living within the shire. Lodge master Carl Richardson said tradespeople were vital to Mareeba and the organisation wanted to help someone get a good start in life. “When a fella starts off his trade, he usually doesn’t have a lot of cash floating around,” he said. “An apprentice has a very good chance of staying in Mareeba and he might even keep going and start up his own business here. “Australia as a whole badly needs tradesmen.”
New signs give Shire fresh look A WAVE of new signs welcoming visitors to the Mareeba Shire have started rolling out. Motorists would have noticed four new signs placed at Mareeba’s four road entry points last week, with a further seven to be erected at shire boundaries this week.
Lodge treasurer John Collins said there were too few bursaries available for tradespeople as opposed to more academicallygifted students, prompting them to offer the bursary. The bursary will pay an apprentice $1000 for each year of their apprenticeship they successfully complete and will take on an additional apprentice every year for the next four years. Apprentices must have at least completed Grade 10 and be employed by a local trade business within the Mareeba shire. To apply for the bursary, pick up an application form at The Express office at 186 Byrnes St, Mareeba any time from 8:30am to 5pm Monday to Friday. Applications close on April 3, with the winner selected by an independent panel.
One of the new welcome signs erected by Mareeba Shire Council.
Mareeba’s iconic “300 sunny days a year” catchphrase will also be painted on to those signs erected at the town’s entry points. Several more welcome signs have started to be pop up at the entrances to various towns in the shire, such as Dimbulah, Chillagoe and Kuranda.
Mareeba Shire mayor Tom Gilmore said the signs, which feature a yellow background with the sun beaming down and an updated council logo, were a much-needed replacement for the ageing and faded welcome signs dotted across the shire. “I think they’re quite refreshing and
quite nice,” he said. “We’re very proud of our little town and this is part of that image. We’re looking at tree-plantings and how else we might be able to brighten up our town.” Cr Gilmore said not only did council want to encourage people to visit the shire, but also to consider living in it.

‘They’re in our territory’ From Page 1 Mr McGrath feared being attacked by a crocodile when he went to clear out weeds from his foot valve in his cane property’s recycling dam. Cattle farmer Heath Amos said in the first month of him moving to his farm five years ago, he spotted a 30cm croc just 50m from his dam. “There’s endless evidence that they’re there,” he said. “I had a calf taken last year by one in a creek hiding in the hymenachne. “The thing that annoys me the most is that Andrew and myself have contacted National Parks before about this problem and they just shrug their shoulders. “But you get a crocodile in a council wastewater treatment plant, the media’s there. It made headlines, but everyone’s missing the big picture here.” Melaleuca Crocodile Farm owner Juergen Arnold, whose property borders Mr Amos’ and Mr Mazgay’s farms, said he would be happy to assist if EHP granted him permission to catch and remove crocodiles from infested properties. Mr Arnold’s farm compound is a secure site with multiple layers of fencing preventing any crocodiles from escaping. He has owned it for about the past two years, with EHP officers inspecting the farm on a yearly basis. Neither Mr McGrath, Mr Amos or Mr Mazgay believe the crocodiles that inhabit their properties have come from the crocodile farm, but instead point to Lake Mitchell where there have been sporadic sightings for more than two decades. That includes one 4.5m crocodile sighted by helicopter pilots flying over the dam. The farms back on to the Mareeba Wetlands, which are a frequent attraction for tourists and bird watchers. “All I want is a bit of signage,” Mr Mazgay said. “It shouldn’t be our job to tell people that crocs are there.” Mr McGrath said he didn’t want to frighten people away from the wetlands but they needed to be aware of the possibility of crocs being in the area. An EHP spokeswoman confirmed the depart-
Biboohra farmers Evan McGrath, Andrew Mazgay and Heath Amos want authorities to catch and remove saltwater crocodiles from their properties.
ment has received reports of saltwater crocodiles in Two Mile Creek but none from Lake Mitchell or the Tablelands’ section of the Barron River. “EHP will also install permanent crocodile warning signs at locations on streams where people are likely to come into contact with crocodiles,” she said. A 1.3m saltie was removed from Mareeba’s sewerage treatment plant on March 2, while another 0.6m croc was removed from a private property on the same day. The spokeswoman said wildlife officers would also return to check the memory cards on the cameras installed on Mr Mazgay’s property shortly. Under EHP’s recently released new Queensland Crocodile Management Plan, Biboohra is located in “Monitoring and Education Zone E”. That means any crocodiles “displaying dangerous behaviour” within that zone would be targeted for removal by rangers.
The spokeswoman refused to say whether local crocodile farms could be given permission by EHP to catch and remove problem crocodiles, only to say the animals were protected under the Nature Conservation Act 1992 and it was an offence to remove them from the wild without authorisation. The issue was raised by Mareeba Shire councillor Alan Pedersen at last Wednesday’s council meeting, with council to write a letter to State Environment minister Steven Miles asking him to take stronger action “A 2.5m saltie will take a kid or a full grown man, no trouble at all,” Cr Pedersen said. “The big concern the farmers have is those crocs getting into the Barron River in the Biboohra and Bilwon area because a lot of people swim there. “If they get into the Barron River there, it’s nothing for them to go to Tinaroo. It’s just over the hill. These fellas move wherever there’s food.
“We have to get this under control now before the population explodes.” Councillor Lenore Wyatt said she had also been in contact with farmers in the area regarding the crocodile sightings and was working effectively with EHP to address the issue, including erecting warning signs. Mareeba mayor Tom Gilmore said it was alarming that saltwater crocodiles were lurking in Biboohra. “We are innocent of these things. This community has never had to deal with saltwater crocodiles,” he said. “They’re robust, large and strong animals that can travel. There’s nothing to stop a 4m crocodile out at Quade’s Dam swimming up to Two Mile Creek because it’s all connected, or ultimately end up in the Barron River.” Crocodile sightings can be reported to EHP on 1300 130 372.

Airport upgrade turns corner Major works to Mareeba Airport could start as early as May.
MAJOR upgrades to Mareeba Airport could start as early as May. Council has invited four contractors to tender for airside infrastructure works at the airport, which comprises works on the runway, taxiways, airfield lighting and aviation commercial precinct. Tender documentation was released to BMD Boral Joint Venture, Fulton Hogan Construction Pty Ltd, FK Gardner & Sons Pty Ltd and FGF Developments Pty Ltd on March 9, with the contract to be awarded by the end of April. The works will then commence in May/June to ensure construction is completed prior to the
2017/18 wet season. Roadworks along the airport’s Vicary and Ray roads are already well underway after starting last year. An additional layer of asphalt will eventually be added to the existing gravel runway in order to take Dash 8 turboprop aircraft on a regular basis, while also being able to take the much heavier Fokker 100 jetliners if required. The airport upgrade is being funded with $13 million from the State Government’s Royalties for Regions program and $5M from the Australian Government’s National Stronger Regions Fund.
Vandals rack up bill RECKLESS vandals have cost ratepayers hundreds of dollars after defacing Mareeba PCYC’s sports hall with graffiti last week. The vandals sprayed several gang-inspired slogans and insults to the police on the back wall of the hall and an adjacent storage shed used by Mareeba Theatre Group. Mareeba Shire councillor Kevin Davies said the graffiti was stupid and careless.
“It’s people’s property and shows a lack of respect,” he said. “It’s like we’re in Sydney. The trains down there look terrible with graffiti sprayed on them.” Cr Davies said issues like youth boredom and crime had been raised at the PCYC’s “Breakfast of Champions” meeting last Tuesday, involving police, councillors, school students, lawyers and community leaders. “Something that came up was
that there was not enough to do for 15 to 17-year-olds,” he said. “You’re not 18, so you can’t go to the pub but you don’t want to be hanging out with younger kids at the skate park.” But Cr Davies said he had no problem with tasteful street art being displayed around town, such as that at Arnold Park. “The toilet block wall and fence there have some really nice art,” he said.

Centre proposal ‘in doubt’ THE developer behind a proposed $21 million shopping centre may not proceed with the project any further. Mareeba Shire Council voted against relinquishing trusteeship of a 1128m2 block of State-owned land to developer Reedlodge Pty Ltd in January. The land was requested by Reedlodge to house its planned anchor tenant for the shopping centre, a major supermarket chain. Reedlodge has since approached the State’s Department of Natural Resources and Mines (DNRM), who have the power to overturn council’s decision on the land. But Reedlodge spokesman Pietro Girgenti said even if the department overturned council’s decision, the developer may be reluctant to proceed with a development application
to council given January’s decision. “I’d say it’s in doubt,” he said. “The developer is considering whether or not this is the right environment to warrant further investment.” Mareeba mayor Tom Gilmore previously told The Express that Reedlodge “refused to inform” council of the identity of the anchor tenant and failed to justify why the developer could not build on their existing land located on the old Rankine Sawmill site. But Mr Girgenti denied Reedlodge withheld any information regarding the project from council, despite council submitting several Right to Information requests to the State Government last year. Mr Girgenti said without the support of council, a decision on the
land in question by DNRM may take as long as 12 months. The land is currently reserved for aged housing. Mareeba Chamber of Commerce president Joe Moro said it was “a matter for Reedlodge to determine whether they had a viable commercial option”. “From our perspective, a loss of potential investment in the town is something we don’t look forward to,” he said. “But everyone has to go through the planning process and no difference can be applied.” Mr Moro said he understood Reedlodge’s concerns but with no formal development application submitted to council, it was “hard to gauge” what the eventual outcome would be.

Mareeba feels insurance pinch MAREEBA residents are feeling the strain of unfair insurance premiums while southern centres get an easier ride. Local financial advisor Ross Cardillo said he was fed up with insurance companies gouging homeowners. “The rising insurance costs are ridiculous and uncalled for,” he said. “A government that listens to the Insurance Council of Australia is not looking after the people of Australia, they’re looking after the corporations of this country.” The Insurance Council of Australia (ICA), which represents the general insurance industry,
consists of a 10-person board made up of some of the top insurance company executives in the country. Insurance pricing in north Queensland has been investigated three times by the Australian Government Actuary, with cyclone risk being blamed by insurance companies for increasing premiums after suffering financial losses in the aftermath of a natural disaster. But Mr Cardillo cited the example of a home insurance quote in the bushfire-prone town of Gol Gol in New South Wales compared to Cairns and Mareeba. For a $300,000 home in Gol Gol with $60,000
worth of contents and a $500 excess, the premium was $1318. For the same type of house in Whitfield, Cairns, the premium was $4093, while in Mareeba it was $1818. Even Mareeba Shire Council is not immune from high insurance premiums, spending $169,620.80 on public liability insurance and $377,298.64 on asset insurance in this financial year alone. Mayor Tom Gilmore said council had started a self-insurance fund a few years ago with the goal of one day being able to fully self-insure councilowned assets.
“We’re building a cash reserve where when it gets to a certain point, you can say “Ok, what’s our risk now?”,” he said. “You balance your risk against your capital that you’ve set aside. It’s a long-term scheme so we can avoid the ever increasing cost of insurance, but at the same time, manage and maintain our protection.” Cr Gilmore said the fund was a smart move by council. “It’s a matter of ensuring that as you raise your capacity to pay, you continue to maintain your security,” he said. “It’s a balancing act but we’re heading in the right direction.”

Mareeba teenager Mateen Latif (second from right) will progress to the district final for Lions Youth of the Year after blitzing both the Mareeba and zone finals this month.
Whiz kid vies for regional glory MAREEBA teenager Mateen Latif is headed to Townsville after blitzing the Lions Youth of the Year Quest Zone Finals. After winning the Mareeba Lions Club’s local Quest, the Mareeba State High School captain again impressed judges in Atherton’s Zone Finals on March 11 to be selected to represent Far North Queensland in Townsville this Saturday. The Quest tests participants in the five categories of Leadership, Sporting, Cultural and Community Interests, Personality, General Knowledge, Academic Achievements and Public Speaking. That includes interviews with Lions Club members, two impromptu questions and a pre-
pared speech. “It’s the next level, so it’s going to be more full-on and a bit tougher,” he said. Mateen said he was hopeful his prepared speech, “When in”, would continue to impress judges in the Quest. The speech argues that visitors to a foreign country should respect and follow the cultural ways of that country, even though it may be different to the culture of a visitor’s home country. More of a challenge will be the impromptu questions, but Mateen said he didn’t fear them. “They require on-the-spot thinking. I try and relate them more to a personal level, because I find I’m able to answer more precisely,” he said.

A win at the District Finals in Townsville will see Mateen contest the State Finals in Brisbane next month, with a shot at the Nationals in Hobart during May. “To compete in the State Finals would be a dream come true. I’ve been doing public speaking for a long time now and to be recognised and make it all that way for what I love doing would be very inspirational,” he said. “It’s a big step to go to Brisbane so I’ll just give it my best shot in Townsville.”

Inventors get ready for Field Days PRODUCTS designed and made by locals will once again showcase the region’s best innovators at Rotary FNQ Field Days. Sponsored by the North Queensland Register, the Inventor’s Contest will this year feature 12 local inventors showcasing a range of products relevant to the agricultural industry. Inventor’s Contest organiser John Hardy said the contest had come a long way at Field Days since the early 1990s. “Over the years, I’ve seen it go from simple things that people have built with a welder to some pretty innovative and high tech devices,” he said. “We’re starting to see drones making inroads and GPS devices. There’s a whole lot of electronic gear used as harvesting aides or in packing sheds.” 2015 winner of the Inventor’s Contest for inventions over $1000 retail, Townsville man Trent Small, impressed judges with his solar-powered Portable Power Supply (PPS) housed in an esky. Mr Hardy said the PPS had since gone on to be used in cyclone-stricken areas like Fiji. Original Rescue Swag founder Tracey Beikoff said her participation in Field Days’

That’s why it’s so important to do things like the Inventor’s Contest where you get feedback from people. “The commitment that’s required to drive a product like mine to market is massive and you don’t have a concept of that when you first start.” Mrs Beikoff said feedback from judges at the Inventor’s Contest was vital to being able to refine a product and make it success-

Girls excel in programming There has never been a more exciting time to be a girl interested in IT. Two year nine students from Dimbulah State School recently attended a one day, hands-on programming workshop for girls. Held in Cairns, The Girls’ Programming Network (GPN) is an extra-curricular program run by girls, for girls, where they have the opportunity to develop their own games, learn about digital media, sound, image and video manipulation and even create smart phone applications. Tahnie Christensen and Jezabel Pajor (pictured) used a program called Python programming language to create a game of Scissors, Paper, Rock, which allowed a human to play five games of Scissors, Paper, Rock against a computer.

“It was a great learning experience and we developed a better understanding of what programming is and how it works,” said Jezabel. “Both Tahnie and I had an awesome time and we even featured in the TV news. “There might be a term two workshop and we encourage all girls in Year 7-10 to check it out. “The people were friendly and the activities were fun.” The GPN program is targeted at high school girls interested in IT, particularly those interested in learning to program or improving their software development skills. It advances their knowledge and promotes gender equality for girls interested in IT, program and software development

CLUB NEWS With Mareeba Lions Brilliant, talented, confident; just a few ways to describe the six contestants in the Mareeba Lions Youth of the Year competition 2017. In the end there is only one winner but any one of these your adults would be worthy of the title. Mareeba State High School student Mateen Latif was crowned champion and went on to represent Mareeba at the zone final held in Atherton, where he was also successful and now progresses to the District final. What a wonderful achievement. On Clean up Australia Day Mareeba lions descended on Bunny Seary Lookout for stage one clean-up of an ambitious beautification project of the site. Bunny Seary was a long term resident of Mareeba, a Councillor, and war veteran. It is fitting that the vantage point named in his honour be developed to the extent that it may be used by the community to enjoy some of the best

Mareeba State High School guidance officer Sheri Mills and school vice-captain Nikita Campman signed their names on a banner taking a stand against bullying.
Students tackle bullying at MSHS Ms Mills said she had distributed information and resources out to students and teachers to spread awareness of the issue and how to take action against bullying. School vice-captain Nikita Campman said it was important for bullying victims to know they were supported by their peers. “They want to know they have people who will stick up for them, that have their back, and something will be done about it,” she said. “Everyone’s willing to help, all of the school leaders. We’ve got a lot of good students at our school who will help someone when they’re down.” School principal Scott Whybird said it was important to be honest about challenges students face at school. “It’s always about bringing things out in the open, because no matter
where you are, there’s always issues that arise,” he said. “The good thing is a lot of this is student-driven.” While bullying has traditionally been associated with verbal or physical abuse, the rise of social media has added another challenge for students to navigate. Bullying online is becoming increasingly common, especially via apps like Instagram and Snapchat. The school encourages parents to have supportive conversations with their children if they are being bullied – whether in the schoolyard or online. Taking screenshots of online bullying is important to retain the evidence to pass to the school and sometimes the police. For more information, head to bullyingnoway.gov.au

ists were travelling to Mareeba, including holidays, events, work-related business or visiting friends and family. “I also touched on online presence for businesses and how they present themselves online, including websites and social media which can have a dramatic effect on business and tourism,” he said. “Only two businesses acknowledged they were receiving direct sales from Facebook despite the majority of people at the event all affirming they had a Facebook page. Nearly everyone has a Facebook page and the potential that presents to businesses and tourism should not be underestimated.” Mr Toogood said it was important businesses started “promoting the positives about the beautiful community you live in”, such as the area’s natural assets or everyday going’s on in the town. “If 100 people in Mareeba do that, imagine the potential numbers of people seeing how amazing Mareeba is, on an ongoing basis,” he said. “If more Mareeba people and more Mareeba businesses start proactively promoting Mareeba online it can have a dramatic effect on tourism and the local economy.” A lucky door prize of a free Google Street View Virtual Tour was won by Sam Musumeci, who chose Amaroo Estate for a digital makeover by QLD360.

Experts talk up Mareeba A SERIES of tourism experts have given local Mareeba businesses the lowdown on how to tap into the region’s growing tourism market. The Mareeba Chamber of Commerce hosted the launch of its new Visitors – Vital to our Community campaign at the Mareeba Heritage Centre last Thursday night, hearing from several experts about the tourism opportunities available to businesses. That included digital marketing expert and Google trusted photographer Paul Toogood from The Agency.blue and QLD360, Outsource Management Pty Ltd’s Bob Cobavie, Michael Lawrence from Inspire Business Consulting, AusIndustry’s Tourism Entrepreneurs’ Programme facilitator Graham Poon and Gulf Savannah Development (GSD) small business officer Annie Cork. Mareeba Chamber of Commerce president Joe Moro said about 30 local business owners, mainly from the Mareeba Shire, attended the event. “The presenters tried to show businesses, in particular those who don’t think of themselves as tourism operators, that they are,” he said. “It’s a wide-ranging industry from hairdressers to mechanics and even people who own rental properties. “It’s one of the many things we’re going to try to do as part of this campaign.” Mr Toogood’s presentation identified why tour-

MAREEBA State High School is taking a stand against bullies. Staff and students got behind the national “Bullying-No Way! Day” last Friday, taking a pledge against bullying by signing their name on to a banner and committing to taking a stand together. School guidance officer Sheri Mills said it was important for not only victims but bystanders to stand up against bullies in the schoolyard. “What we’re hoping to do is discourage bystander behaviour in allowing bullying to happen and encourage students being bullied to report it,” she said. “Bystander action is one of the key things that enables bullying to keep happening, so giving students confidence to act and report bullying, even if it’s not affecting them directly, is important.”

National award for Mareeba Mazda
Mareeba Mazda has been awarded one of the greatest accolades in the motoring domain by once again taking out the Mazda Master Dealer Award and the only rural dealer in Australia to do so. The ceremony was held at Hayman Island in the Whitsundays on Saturday March 11th. The Mazda Master Dealer Excellence Awards winners are drawn from 130 Mazda dealers in three categories, Metro, Provincial and Rural. Within the Rural category stand 52 dealerships and it is in this category that Mareeba Mazda has won its most recent award. Dealer principal David Mete said, “becoming a Mazda Master Dealer would not be possible without the support of wonderful and loyal customers and our dedicated staff, who continue to commit to best business practices and provide high levels of customer service”

ATTENTION ALL TABLELANDS AND SURROUNDING AREAS The Australasian Meat Industry Employees’ Union is interested in hearing from local people who have applied for work at the chicken processing factory at Mareeba, or who are interested in obtaining employment there. Management representatives of the factory have informed us that the reason they are employing foreign visa workers is because locals are not interested in working there. It has been reported to the Union that locals have in fact been applying for work at the factory, but are being rejected in favour of backpacker visa holders. If you have applied for work at the Mareeba plant, and been rejected, we would like to hear from you. The Union is also keen to provide the company with details of people who genuinely want work at the factory, whether they have previously applied for work there or not. The AMIEU will have a representative at the Mareeba Racecourse on Monday, 27th March, 2017 from 6:00pm The AMIEU will be urging the company which operates the Mareeba plant to demonstrate its commitment to the local community and the employment of local workers. Rules changes for soccer games
The full suite of new rules: • At kick-off, the ball can now be kicked in any direction – including backwards. No players are allowed to stand in their opponents’ half. • No more “triple punishment” – penalty, red card and automatic onematch suspension. If a player commits a “Denying an obvious goal scoring opportunity” offence inside the penalty area, it will now be a caution if the foul was an attempt to play the ball or challenge an opponent for the ball. However, handballs, holding, pulling or pushing, not attempting to play the ball, preventing a chance to play the ball and serious foul play or violent conduct will still be a send-off for players if they deny an obvious goal scoring opportunity. • If a player is injured by a foul which results in a send-off or caution for the opponent, the injured player may be quickly treated on the pitch without the need to leave the field of play. If the assessment/treatment is not quick the player will have to go off. • A penalty taker who “illegally feints” once his run-up is completed will be cautioned. A goalkeeper who moves off his line before the kick is taken will be cautioned if a goal is not scored. • If play is stopped due to interference from a team official or substitute, a direct free kick will now be awarded to the opposition. • Players’ arms and hands are not considered when judging offside. Offside free-kicks will be taken from the place where the player commits the offside offence – this can be in their own half.
SPREADING THE WORD: (L-R) FNQ Football retention and development coach Angelo Capaldi, referee Natalie Bambino and referee Chris Dawson visited the Mareeba Bulls club earlier this month to brief them on new rules.
COMPETITIVE soccer matches from U12s right up to seniors will undergo a series of rule changes this season, as FNQ Football tries to keep up with the latest developments in the World Game. More than a dozen new rule changes have been implemented with FNQ Football referees having visited clubs across the region – including Mareeba - to bring them up to speed. Among the major changes, there will be no more “triple punishment” (penalty, red card and one match suspension) for a player who fouls an opposition player inside the penalty box, denying them “an obvious goal scoring opportunity”. Instead, the ref will issue a penalty and yellow card if the foul was an attempt to play the ball or challenge an opponent for the ball inside the penalty box. But outside the penalty box, a red card will be given for the same foul committed. Handballs, holding, pulling or pushing, not attempt-
ing to play the ball, preventing a chance to play the ball and serious foul play or violent conduct will still be a send-off for players if they deny an obvious goal scoring opportunity. FNQ Football referee retention and development coach Angelo Capaldi said the changes would make the game more interesting. “We’ve gone to all the clubs and tried to educate the coaches and as many players as we can,” he said. “Our endeavour is to limit the interaction between us and players, coaches and spectators when it comes to our decision-making. “We want to help the clubs learn the new laws of the game because these are big changes.” At kick-off, the ball can now be kicked in any direction, including backwards, and if play is stopped due to interference from a team official or substitute, a direct free kick will now be awarded to the opposition..
• If a player takes a free kick quickly and an opponent who is less than 9.15m from the ball intercepts it, the referee allows play to continue. However, an opponent who deliberately prevents a free kick being taken quickly must be cautioned for delaying the restart of play. • Any material on/covering the socks must be same colour as the part of the sock it is covering. Undershorts/tights must be the same colour as the main colour of the shorts or the lowest edge (hem); the team must wear the same colour. Electronic communication with substitutes is forbidden. • An opponent who is in the penalty area when a goal kick is taken cannot touch the ball until another player has touched it (indirect free kick if this occurs). • A player may be sent off any time after the referee enters the field of play for the pre-match inspection. • A player who deliberately strikes an opponent on the head or face will be sent off unless the force used was minimal / negligible. • A foul off the field will be penalised with a free kick on the boundary line nearest to where the foul occurred (penalty kick if in offender’s penalty area). • Not all handball offences receive a caution – it is a yellow card offence if it stops or interferes with a promising attack. • “Three’s a crowd” rule. Crowding the referee – a player will be cautioned if three or more players surround a match official to dissent a decision. Players will also be cautioned if they show visibly disrespectful behaviour to any of the match officials, respond aggressively to decisions, confront a match official face-to-face or run towards a match official to contest a decision
Hornets forked by Devils THE Red Devils have redeemed themselves in Mareeba Basketball’s Men’s Summer League Competition after a 61-28 thrashing of the Green Hornets last Thursday night. Devils had a point to prove in the Round 5 clash after they were beaten by an undermanned Ciggy Butts outfit 56-46 in the previous week. Experienced veteran Craig Fairley had also re-joined to give his side some added defensive grit – something they lacked against Butts the week before. And Devils didn’t take a backwards step in the first quarter, Juni Bordeos and Layton and Brandon Osborne striking first. The Osborne twins continued to harass the Hornets all over the D, bumping up the score to 12-5 despite a late quarter charge from Hornets youngster Lane Hannish. The Devils continued their onslaught in the second quarter, leaving the Hornets scoreless for most of it. Once again, the Osborne twins were a class above, producing some excel-

EXPRESS sPORT Bulls falter against Stratford
UNLUCKY: Action from the Mareeba Bulls match against Stratford last Saturday night.
MAREEBA Bulls have suffered a disappointing 2-1 loss against arch-rivals Stratford in their first game of the season at Borzi Park. Coming off the back of a hardfought 3-2 away win against the Dolphins the week before in the FFA Cup, the Bulls were confident heading into the home clash on Saturday night. Neither side dominated the first half, despite multiple chances as momentum swung both ways. The action came in the second half when striker Simeon Malahoff beat Mareeba keeper Adrian Vedelgago to go 1-0 up at the 54th minute. Making his return from suspension, midfielder Wayne Srhoj was subbed on for John Ghensi minutes later, bringing some attacking options to his side. However, Stratford had their tails up, striker Joe Rusch capitalising on a cross from winger Osman Kamara, which was initially deflected by Vedelago. But a miskick and attempted clearance caused a regrettable own goal in the 57th minute as the visitors went 2-0 up. Mareeba quickly regathered and pressed into Stratford’s half, creating multiple chances but failing to capitalise. A clear penalty to Mareeba following striker Steven Cater being brought down in the box made it 2-1 in the 78th minute to give the home side some hope.
But it wasn’t to be as Stratford held out to take the win. Bulls coach Alex Srhoj said the loss would act as motivation for his side to improve, despite missing captain Alex Plowman and midfielder David Ruiz for the game. “I’m proud of the boys character, we showed in the last 20 minutes we can run over the top of anyone,” he said. “We were just a bit unlucky towards the end and paid the price for a couple of errors.” Srhoj praised the efforts of Jason Haydon, Nic Tallarico and Zane Singleton. Stratford coach Doug Baird said it was a hard-fought win for his side, who are rebuilding with six new signings this season. “It’s always a tough place to come and get the points,” he said. “It’s really gratifying to get the result. I don’t think Mareeba played as well as they can play and we didn’t either, but you get that at this stage of the season.” In other games, the Reserve’s drew 1-1 and the premier ladies kicked off their season with a outstanding 3-1 win. On Friday night the Black 2nd Division team lost 2-1, while the Orange team won 13-0. The Bulls take on Marlin Coast at Pennell Field this Saturday.

Gators make statement against Innisfail

THE Mareeba Gladiators have proven they are the real deal this season after an inspirational 20-10 victory over powerhouse Innisfail Leprechauns on Saturday night. After a decisive 30-6 win against arch-rivals Atherton in Round 1, Gladiators coach Tye Ingebrigtsen was wary of the challenge posed by Innisfail, who it made it deep into the finals last season. The home team was caught on the back foot early at Davies Park, handling errors costing them valuable field possession as Innisfail pressed for the try line. Leps were rewarded soon after, sprightly fullback Edward Morrison-Sailor scoring in the far right corner at about the fourth minute to go 4-0 up. But Innisfail’s Matt Healy missed the conversion. Hooker Clint Posselt led Mareeba’s fightback, attempting to orchestrate an attack on the Leps’ right flank but couldn’t find a way through as dropped balls again cost the home side. An Innisfail scrum 20m from the Gladiators’ tryline forced Mareeba to play defence, holding out multiple times against relentless attacks. The game degenerated into a virtual stalemate about halfway through the first half, neither side managing to get the upper hand. A lack of discipline by Gators eventually caused a penalty to Innisfail just outside Mareeba’s tryline, the visitors opting to take the kick and go 6-0 at the 19th minute. After a penalty for what looked like a head-high tackle on Mareeba co-captain Maddie Oosen near Innisfail’s tryline, the sturdy hooker recovered quickly, throwing a sneaky pass out to Posselt who touched down for a try. With centre Boche Satrick suspended for a week due to a lifting tackle against Atherton, kicking duties fell to Sonny Kerr, who didn’t disappoint to bring scores level at 6-all. Innisfail were desperate to get ahead before half-time, constantly probing Mareeba’s defence but at times were their own worst enemies causing multiple penalties. The second half started much the same as the first ended before Oosen made a blistering intercept run only to be held up just 10m away from Innisfail’s tryline. But the effort was rewarded when Dan Moevao crossed between the posts just moments later to go 12-6 up after a successful conversion from Kerr. A frustrated Leprechauns gave away another penalty in the 66th minute with Kerr taking the kick to make it 14-6. The Leps refused to quit and their persistence eventually paid off when Fred Koraba touched down in the 71st

Two early tries in the space of ten minutes by young half Ty Grogan looked set to spark an Atherton Roosters victory on Saturday night, but in the end Ivanhoes proved too strong claiming a 28-18 victory at Roosters Stadium. The quick fire double got the home side up 12-0 early, but the quality Ivanhoes outfit were soon back in the contest to trial 12-10 at halftime. Ivanhoes enjoyed a strong restart and soon pushed ahead 28-12 before another Roosters try got it back to 28-18. Roosters coach Dean Howard said he
minute to make it 14-10, Healy missing the conversion. The score looked staying that way as both sides struggled with fatigue. Then centre Sonny Rea conjured up something special when, with just under four minutes to go, he produced a brilliant intercept play to run the length of the field and cross for a try. Kerr converted to give Mareeba a hard-fought 20-10 win. Speaking after the game, Ingebrigtsen was full of praise for his men and their giant-slaying victory, the first time they have beaten Innisfail in four years. “I can’t be any more proud of the boys who put that jersey on,” he said. “My heart was racing the whole game.” Ingebrigtsen praised Rea’s intercept try. “It was crucial. That try Sonny scored at the end sealed the game, that was outstanding,” he said. “He pulled off the big play at the big moment and we got it.” The Gators will take on Yarrabah at Jilara Oval this Sunday from 3pm.
was happy with sides first half, but several injuries in that period had taken its toll at the back end. “We were good till injuries forced key changes midway through the first session and we had a lot of wounded troops leaving us without any replacements in the end,” Howard said. “Overall it was a good effort considering the injuries and changes and our new recruits showed they will bring plenty to the club.” The Roosters play Brothers this Sunday at Stan Williams Park.
