70 years of Football in Mareeba

Past and present players, officials and supporters gathered in Mareeba on Saturday night to celebrate the 70th Anniversary of Mareeba United Football Club. In attendance were three players of the 1963 team – Berto Srhoj, Eddie Venturato and Mario Battistin, that won the club’s first ever Crad Evans Shield. They are pictured holding the original shield with current Technical Director of Coaching Alex Srhoj and President Raymond Cater. Turn to page 9 for photos from the night and page 23 for a 70th year wrap.

Most disadvantaged By Justin Fris

T

HE Tablelands has been officially declared as one of the ‘most disadvantaged’ regions in both Queensland and Australia, according to the recently released ‘Dropping off the Edge 2015’ report. Within the report compiled by Jesuit and Catholic Social Services Australia, each region across Australia has been classed into one of the four following classifications: Most Advantaged, Advantaged, Disadvantaged or Most Disadvantaged.

Along with the Tablelands (with includes both Mareeba and the Southern Tablelands), the entire Cape York and Far North region received a ‘Most Disadvantaged’ classification – with Cairns and Port Douglas only faring marginally better – receiving a ‘Disadvantaged’ classification. In order for a region to be classed as ‘Most Disadvantaged’, a region is required to be prevalent in one or more of the following: • Young adults not engaged in education or employment • High levels of prison admissions

• High long-term levels of unemployment • Limited or no internet services • Low socio-economic conditions/income Within each pool, regions have been allocated a ‘band level’ in relation to their position from 1 to 6, with a 1 rating the most severely disadvantaged. Far North regions that received a ‘one band’ rating include: Aurukun, Kowanyama and Yarrabah. Locally, the Tablelands received a 6 rating, which was downgraded from a 4 rating in 2007. Major stakeholders across the region have had

time to digest the findings of the report during the week and offered their thoughts on the findings. Mareeba Shire Council Mayor Tom Gilmore said he ‘wasn’t surprised’ by the classification, but offered the following insight to businesses further afield. “First of all, I’m not surprised that a region (Tablelands) such as ours has been described as disadvantaged,” he said. “But, having said that, I would be very disappointed if investors painted us as disadvantaged. Lisa serving up quality By Justin Fris MAREEBA McDonalds manager Lisa Gayton has been awarded the ‘Silver Spatula’ award; a title only given to the top five percent of McDonalds restaurant managers each year. An award based on results – along with ability to successfully build both business and rapport with staff – saw Ms Gayton nominated by Mareeba store licensee and owner, Jason Berther. “It was a surprise,” she said. “The licensee nominated me, plus our supervisors. I then got an email from our big supervisor down in Brisbane.” A chef by trade, Ms Gayton gained her passion for food in Sydney, before moving up to the Far North and beginning a job she loves. “I’ve worked in hospitality since before I left school,” she said. “I’ve been in Mareeba for eight years now.” If working on a morning shift, she will arrive at 3.30am; on some occasions, it is not uncommon to see her still working hard at 2pm that same afternoon. “I just love seeing the young ones and how they progress,” she said. “(Aged) 14, shy, timid, guys and then a few years later they blossom and come out of their shells.” Ms Gayton added that all crew receive extensive food preparation training, which is closely monitored to ensure quality.

National Tree Day celebrated at MSHS National Tree Day was celebrated last Friday July 24 at Mareeba State High School, with the first crop of year sevens planting a tree donated by the Mareeba Shire Council as a symbolic representation on National Tree Day. The tree is replacing one of a number brought down recently by cyclone Larry; and over the next five years, the grade seven student classes can take pleasure in seeing it grow. Deputy Principal Terry McClelland said: “We took the opportunity for the new year sevens to plant the tree. It was also planted strategically on the side of the oval where the 100m sprint finish line is; and we hope when the tree grows, that seniors will be able to sit under it and cheer the sprint finals. “It’s also has significance in teaching our students about our flora and that trees are an important part of our environment; and if students can be aware of that at an early age, they will be effective members of our community.”

Donations fund sought-after medical equipment By Justin Fris

Acting Nurse Unit Manager Colin Green holds the old equipment and Senior Medical officer Andrew Mason with the new.

MAREEBA Hospital staff have openly welcomed a highly sought after piece of equipment to their emergency department. Through donations from the Friends of Hospital Foundation, hospital staff were able to select resources of which they required the most; which resulted in the acquisition of a video laryngoscope. A typical laryngoscope is designed to assist a patient who may have trouble breathing. A light is attached to the device to give the medical professional greater insight into their airway and vocal cords during a procedure.

“The reality is, across the country everyone is struggling. My perception of the MSC region is one which is healthy, strong and future motivated. “Generally speaking, the information may be accurate, but it does not paint an accurate picture of the region.” Mayor Gilmore concluded by stating that he hoped both the Abbott and Palaszczuk Government’s could analyse the information and provide further assistance by responding to issues felt in the region. Tablelands Regional Council Mayor Rosa Lee Long was also unsurprised by the Tablelands rating and said she was well aware of issues facing the entire Tablelands; not just within her jurisdiction. “The rating is based on many factors including unemployment, education and post-school qualifications, low family income, internet access, disability support, child maltreatment, criminal and juvenile convictions, domestic violence, prison and psychiatric admissions to name a few. “For the rating to improve, significant changes would need to occur at all levels within our society. “As individuals, we can access a range of education and training opportunities living in this region from quality childcare, schools, TAFE and online or external studies; however there needs to be a keen desire to embrace the education opportunities on offer for better employment outcomes. “We need to support and encourage innovators and entrepreneurs who think outside the box, take risks and seek opportunities to create new jobs and opportunities. Supporting our local businesses and industries are crucial to ensure are small regional communities can prosper. “Business needs to support our youth also by taking up Government initiatives to train and employ the younger generation so that they can remain within our region.” Federal Member for Kennedy Bob Katter registered his disappointment at the figures, along with highlighting the increase of foreign imports impacting the region. “Every single person in Government should be utterly ashamed of themselves with the disclosure of these figures. Ratepayer flags Springmount

By Justin Fris A Mareeba Shire Council ratepayer has flagged concern over the new Springmount Raceway, which is situated along Springmount road in Walkamin. Paul Carpenter – a local who lives in the vicinity of the precinct – has written a letter to all Mareeba Shire Councillors, in a bid to share his concerns. In his letter, he highlights the concern of both noise from frequent racing events, along

with excess traffic which could frequent the area. “We like many locals around the racetrack were not even aware of its existence until the open day held a little while ago; which proved to be a very unpleasant day with V8 cars and motor bikes driving past making the concrete pad to our home shake underfoot. “I (and many others I’ve spoken to) believe the best course of action would be for the council to give a trial period of at least 12 months with the current approval to gauge

the impact in and around the area of the track, with sound testing done whilst meets are on.” Springmount Raceway director Evan Yelavich said that SR organisers had been working closely with a raft of stakeholders to ensure that all standards were complied with “Most drag strips in this country are situated close to major cities and within close proximity to much larger populations than is the case with Springmount Raceway,” he said. “What we are proposing is therefore not considered unreasonable and not out of line with

what has been deemed appropriate by authorities in other similar cases all over the country. “Also, the fact of the matter is that there is an existing approval which has been in place for around five years which allows for a greater number of events running later at night than what we are proposing now, albeit subject to the requirement to construct large, expensive noise barriers.” The first layer of asphalt for the 800m drag strip has been layed down, with two more planned within coming months.

Imperative information session for locals By Justin Fris

Members of the Housing Support Services Team will be on hand to speak with locals at the intervention session.

MAREEBA Community Housing is hosting an informative session on Saturday, August 5, which has some relevance for every member of our society. The session will focus on homelessness awareness and intervention, with Community Housing staff presenting locals with a current snapshot of both demand for affordable accommodation and services they provide. Even if you have never been officially homeless yourself, chances are you either know someone who has been or is close to it. The feeling of uncertainty of not having a secured roof over your head; or being unable to financially sustain accommodation are two things that no one should ever have to endure. Mareeba Community Housing Manager Patricia Goldfinch said homelessness was not immune to the Tablelands.

“Homelessness Australia is an organisation that we are a member of,” she said. “And every year for the last five or more years, they have been running homeless actions during the month of August. “So they’ll have different events; this year they are talking about intervention. We’re looking from 212 Walsh Street (where we are currently managing street to home and homestay programs) and we are looking to set up an information sharing day as part of that ‘early intervention’ process. “We thought we’d put on a BBQ lunch for our clients here. A lot of people in Mareeba – when they think of homelessness – they think of those who are in the public face. “A lot of the time they don’t realise in the rural areas, you have a lot of hidden homelessness; so its really overcrowding.” The session commences at 12 noon. on Saturday, August 5, at 212 Walsh Street, Mareeba.

Research shows we prefer not to cycle A recent report into cycling participation across the state has disappointed Bicycle Queensland officials, who are calling on both the Abbott and Palaszczuk Government’s to provide more cycle infrastructure. Report findings indicated only 16.1 per cent (760,800) of Queenslanders regularly rode a bike each week. Bicycle Qld CEO Ben Wilson said: “We know that Ride to School programs are working, as are the Ride to Work programs – when there are bikeways and encouragement,” Mr Wilson said.

www.theexpressnewspaper.com.au

“The evidence is we are getting less healthy as a state and nation, and right now the federal and state governments are considering a GST rise or Medicare levy increase to pay for burgeoning health care costs. “Yet countries that have invested in cycling are not experiencing these health issues or costs to the same degree. “Local, state and particularly federal investment in cycling is critical to see the current slow growth in cycling strongly increase to give a health and transport return that our nation really needs.”

He touched many lives – Curtis Wallbridge By Justin Fris

Curtis had an excellent work ethic and was renowned for his humour.

Members of the Wallbridge family together during last Sunday’s golf day.

CURTIS Wallbridge was a unique individual – a man who could mix it with both princes and paupers and never be out of place. The only thing surer than this work ethic and desire was the love and care that he had for his family. He is survived by his wife Toni, daughters Katrina, Heidi and Katie; along with several grandchildren; of whom he loved dearly. Last Sunday saw Curtis’s family, friends and colleagues from all over the state participate in the inaugural ‘Wallbridge Family Community Golf Day’ at the Mareeba Golf Club. Toni explains that her husband developed a strong liking for golf and always managed to squeeze a game or two in during the week or even on holiday. “Probably the last 10 or so years he became really serious about it; and I became a golf widow (laughs),” she said. “He wasn’t overly serious about it, he just loved the game. “We toured a fair bit (Curtis even played a round of golf in Fiji) and wherever we went - he wanted to play a game of golf - so he could say that he played there.” She added that Curtis was a massive follower of State of Origin – and would never miss an opportunity to watch a match in Brisbane with some mates. “Just State of Origin,” Toni clarified. “He was never interested in any other the matches, just State of Origin. “He’d try to sneak in two games a year if he could. He loved the atmosphere of origin and would always go with a friend of his who followed New South Wales.” Curtis – who worked as a concreter for decades – would regularly work seven days a week and very rarely have a day off. If he did manage a day off, it was either for fish-

ing, golf or origin. “He did put in a lot of hours at work,” Toni said. “So when he did get down time, he liked to do those things. “It was nothing for him to leave for work before 6am in the morning and not get back until 6pm that night, seven days a week. “He was never one for sitting idle. If he did sit idle on a Sunday afternoon and decided to watch some television, it was more often than not him being exhausted and time for him to chill out – but that was very rare.” His proud daughter Katrina summed his work ethic perfectly by saying: “Dad’s watch was the sun. When the sun came up, he went to work; and he would only go home when it came down. His actual watch was nothing more than show, as he never looked at it.” Curtis had somewhat of a unique sense of humour, with an ample number of sayings that he would frequently share with everyone around him. Both Katie and Toni agree that he was a very funny man, with a dry quick witted nature that is still cherished to this day. Christmas also played a major role within the Wallbridge household growing up, with Curtis ensuring a festive mood would always prevail. An icy cold XXXX would be sampled early on, before he would provide the family his famous pork – even if the crackling did burn from time to time. But it was the love for his grandchildren in later years that really made Christmases that much more special, with Curtis playing the role of Santa Claus for the children. It may be a year on from his untimely passing, but Curtis’s legacy and memory still and will always live on; in both community and family. Curtis Wallbridge was a man who touched a multitude of lives during his journey and in some occasions might not have realised his positive influence on others extended so deep. Sunday saw in excess of 60 teams participate, which is a true testament to his legacy. The Wallbridge family is keen to extend the ‘Community Golf Day’ in future years as a testament to Curtis’s life; long may his deeds and personality live on in all of us.

International flavour By Justin Fris ATHERTON State High School has welcomed 10 international exchange students, who have travelled from every corner of the globe. Typically, July is a major intake month of students, with the majority of the northern hemisphere breaking for summer vacation. As part of the arrangement, students are billeted out to a local ‘host family’ and can spend anywhere from months to a whole year here. An officially accredited international school, Atherton SHS has always been at the forefront of encouraging international students to spend time in the Far North. The newest crop of students (pictured in order) include: Katharina Rupprecht (Germany), Elisabeth Petterson (Norway), Mara Hausmann (Germany), Jon

Lona (Norway) Sofia Guidorizzi (Italy), Justus Walgern (Germany) Sofia Bella (Italy) August Jambak (Norway) Giada Siniscalchi (Italy) and Charlotte Schrey (Germany). The students appear keen to see some of the sights on the Tablelands, along with learning as much as possible. Jon Lona, who has shown great promise in the field of astrophysics, indicated the school facilities were a major drawcard. “I am really interested in this so when l saw that Atherton had this program l was excited about being able to come here,” he said. Giana Sinischalchi, who hails from the bustling city of Milano (Milan), said she was keen to see ‘real Australia’ on her travels. “It is so different to Milan; which is such a big city,” she said. “I want to be able to see the real Australia and l thought Atherton would be a good place.”

Hendra case on the Tablelands

A case of Hendra Virus was recorded on a Southern Tablelands property last Friday afternoon, subsequently putting the region on high alert. Atherton Chamber of Commerce vice president Christine Doan – who also has a significant involvement with the local equine industry – said the news was horrible for the owner; and posed several other unthinkable consequences. “(It’s) a wrenching and distressing situation that should never arise,” she said. “The owner in question had vaccinated all of his horses, except for the three oldest ones.” Ms Doan added that all human contractions of the Hendra Virus have occurred through contact with a horse; with a mortality rate of 57 per cent. Those who may have come into contact with the horses are tipped to undergo blood testing.

Plans to revitalise lakes By Justin Fris

VARIOUS community groups, local businesses, ratepayers and the Mareeba Shire Council are all keen to usher in a new era for the Bicentennial Lakes precinct in Mareeba. Quite lengthy in size – the precinct runs along the back of Mareeba State High School and further along - and offers walking tracks, lakes, and plenty of lush grass for families to enjoy a nice afternoon together. However due to a multitude of reasons over the years, this area of land has been frequented less by locals and tourists alike. From a business and local government perspective, Mareeba Chamber of Commerce president Joe Moro said both parties were passionate about bringing the precinct back to life. “Mareeba Shire Council have been very

supportive in looking to bring a bit of life and attraction for more frequent use of the area,” he said. “Tom (Mayor Tom Gilmore) has a big passion for helping the lake area. Mareeba Rotary, the local Lions Club and police; along with Bendigo Bank, have all been very supportive. “It is still early days, but we are keen to put a plan in place over time and hopefully arrange a public forum.” Mr Moro added that the Bicentennial Lakes precinct appeared to be ‘underused’ by locals; something he believes that wouldn’t happen in most other towns. “A lot of players are lining up to help assist during the early phase,” he said. “The precinct has a lot of uses and interested parties.” Sonya Alba-Miller, who likes to exercise in

the precinct, said she was confident that good times would again return. “I believe people will start to use the park again, it is already looking so much better and it a great asset to our town. If the improvements continue hopefully it will be like it used to be. “It is a great place to exercise, it’s peaceful, it’s close to our home and the paths are great for the kids to ride their bikes on.” And if you were hesitant on visiting the precinct due to doubts of its cleanliness, Ms Alba-Miller confirmed: “The park was full of rubbish, really run down and overgrown, but it is so much better now.” MSC Mayor Tom Gilmore said he was pleased that community groups were happy to assist with the restoration of the precinct; and that the general condition of the area was very good.

LNP believe Budget lacks leadership

AFTER letting the dust settle on July 14’s State Budget, the Liberal National Party have run their rule over the document. NDIS workshops set for Tablelands THE Tablelands will accommodate a series of ‘Pave the Way’ practical workshops in August, as part of preparation for the National Disability Insurance Scheme (NDIS) next year. Held in both Atherton (Wednesday, August 12 at the Atherton Hotel) and Mareeba (Thursday, August 13 at the Jackaroo Motel) – the session will focus centrally around fundamental planning methods for both participants and their families. Along with this, the NDIS is designed to empower those with a disability, by encouraging them to expand

both life and support networks. Additional sessions will also be held in Cairns and Mossman. If you would like to register your interest for any of the workshops, please contact ‘Pave the Way’ on 3291 5800.

Pitt prepares for Budget tour STATE Treasurer Curtis Pitt is set to commence a statewide tour across Queensland, in a bid to sell the recent Budget to the electorate. Mr Pitt – who was also elected to the seat of Mulgrave in January – said he believes the Budget has taken regional and remote areas into account. “Our first State Budget is a positive budget for rural and regional Queensland and a budget for jobs, growth and investment,” he said. “It’s all about jobs now, and jobs for the future. “I’m hitting the road this week to get out there and sell the benefits of this Budget to Queenslanders. “It’s a Budget that invests in science, technology, innovation and infrastructure, with a capital works spend of $10.1 billion in 201516. “This includes a $4.8 billion infrastructure spend in rural and regional Queensland. “We’re also kickstarting investment in the regions with our $200 million Building Our Regions initiative to support jobs and build infrastructure. “The Budget includes $500 million for school and hospital maintenance as part of a works program that will support local tradies and suppliers throughout Queensland.” Mr Pitt will initially visit Cairns, Mt Isa, Mackay and Townsville; with additional locations to be determined in due course.

regard to the recent release of the Northern Australia White Paper. Despite welcoming the massive injection of funding within the region, Mr Katter is keen for the key projects making evidential progress. “We thank Minister Joyce for his efforts,” he said. “But the two things we really need are a Reconstruction Board and a disputes resolution tribunal in the areas of collective bargaining for the farmers. But even those are only stop gap measures. “The removal of the propping up the AUD by interest rates is still nearly 1000 per cent higher than the rest of the world and the burning issue of the supermarket giants goes unresolved. “The ACCC Commissioner will look at the problem. But we need to deal with the problem which is the supermarket giant’s 90 per cent control of the market. “The third issue is the competitive disadvantage. Every farmer in the world gets 40 per cent from the Government; we only get 4 per cent. Try competing on that ‘level playing field’. “We don’t want to condemn the Minister for trying; he is dealing with his own party – the Nationals - free market fundamentalists and a Cabinet that if possible, is even worse.”

A forum about the current state of the Kuranda Range has been announced for Thursday, August 6 at the Kuranda Hotel (Firefly Bar and Grill) from 4pm. The infamous stretch of road – which can be unforgiving during trying weather conditions – caused further chaos last week. Gridlock was lengthy for hundreds of cars, as emergency services personnel attended to a nasty two car collision, just north of the third passing lane. Coupled by this untimely accident, there were a couple of breakdowns, which only added to the mounting congestion. Local, state and federal politicians have all voiced their opinions on the stretch of road; with all invited to participate at the forum.

MOVIE NEWS

There are two spectacular new films on screen at The Rising Sun Cinema, in Mareeba this week MAGIC MIKE XXL, stars Channing Tatum, and sizzles with lots of fun, all the way to box office success. ANT–MAN, from Marvel and Disney, provides loads of fun for all ages, and with a PG rating, is great family entertainment. Paul Rudd and Michael Douglas are in the the starring roles in this “smallest of small” super hero movie. WOMAN IN GOLD continues for a second great week – it is based on a true story and stars Helen Mirren and Ryan Reynolds.

ANT-MAN

After being armed by his mentor Dr. Hank Pym (Michael Douglas) with a super-suit and the astonishing ability to shrink in scale but increase in strength, Scott Lang (Paul Rudd) must embrace his inner hero and help Pym protect the secret behind his spectacular Ant-Man suit from a new generation of towering threats. Against seemingly insurmountable obstacles, Pym and Lang must plan and pull off a heist that will save the world. Review by Louise Keller Refreshingly simple and loads of fun, Ant-Man maximizes on its point of difference of its smallest super-hero by coating it with lots of laughter and a likeable vibe. The heist set up is easy to follow and the scallywag protagonist (played by Paul Rudd) who dons the Ant-Man suit is an amiable character who has been travelling on the wrong road, but is determined to become the person his young daughter believes he is. The scale is smaller than some of the other Marvel tales but

MAGIC MIKE XXL

Three years have passed since Mike (Channing Tatum) left his life as a stripper at the top of his game. When he meets up with the remaining Kings of Tampa, who are now ready to quit the game too, they decide to join forces and have one last performance at the Strippers' Convention in Myrtle Beach. But there are some interesting whistle stops on the way - in Jacksonville and Savannah, where they meet up with friends - old and new. There are new moves to learn, too. Review by Louise Keller: Sex continues to be the sizzle in this raunchy road movie that plays out like fun-filled foreplay and in which Channing Tatum has all the moves. It doesn't matter that the plot is

in short supply: this is all about fun and sensual pleasure as good-looking, sculpted bods with quivering abs deliver energetic, innovative and sensual routines. There is something wild and wonderful about the mood generated - this is a genuinely upbeat, uplifting celebration of sensuality and life. We feel as though we are there with the guys on the road to the Strippers' Convention, each pit-stop another excuse for a new set up, new routines and seductive reason for dollar confetti to fall like rain showers while enthusiastic young females preen and titter. Gregory Jacobs is at the helm this time, replacing Steven Soderbergh, who continues to keep his finger on the pulse as producer, cinematographer and editor. When the film begins, it takes its time to establish the mood. We know that Tatum's Magic Mike has left his stripper past behind and moved on to run his own furniture business, his creativity now channeled into carpentry. There is real magic in the workshop sequence when Mike suddenly slips into an impromptu routine - no music, no reason, no fuss. His body moves with such grace and elegance. A pool party prank by the rest of the old gang The Kings of Tampa, gets Mike back in the game; not much persuasion is required. Into the old ice-cream truck they jump and the road trip begins. The dialogue is spontaneous and gloriously inconsequential as Mike suggests they ditch the old sailor and fireman routines to present something new. If it's scripted, it's brilliant; if it's improvised, it works perfectly. Seize the day, is the motto as they head to Myrtle Beach for their last hurrah. The fun begins. The convenience store sequence when Joe Manganiello's Richie performs an outrageous routine to make a dour-faced sales assistant smile is naughty but done with cheeky humour. There's a night on the beach, where Mike generates sparks with Zoe (Amber Heard, lovely), whose camera is her eyes, and then there's the Country Club, where sassy Rome (Jada Pinkett Smith) runs a fantasy house where gyrating hips, flexing pecs, unbuckled belts and little gold shorts are on offer. Next stop is the elegant home of well-heeled, eager to rock-n-roll Nancy (Andie MacDowell), where Mike runs into Zoe again and more chemistry is ignited. (Heard is appealing as the girl who likes cake.) It's all pretty wild and sensual and things quickly escalate at the Stripper Convention where the MC (Elizabeth Banks) asks the audience of eager young women: Are you ready to be worshipped, exalted and have your beauty brought out? Each stud has his turn on stage, culminating in an eye-popping and titillating routine featuring Tatum in a thong.

we never feel as though there is anything lacking – the film bristles with goofiness and joie de vivre, its charismatic cast looking as though it is having a ripping good time. After a brief opening sequence set in 1989 in which we meet a digitally air-brushed Michael Douglas as the brilliant scientist whose ground-breaking research on particles with its shrinking-suit technology forms the foundation of the plot. Douglas looks more like himself later on and he is a strong presence. Evangeline Lilly as his daughter Hope (in a beguiling, mysterious pageboy hairstyle) is delightful. There are many lovely little touches, like Michael Pena whistling ‘It’s a Small World’ when he is waiting for Ant-Man (and the army of accompanying ants) to infiltrate the premises and I love the idea of Ant-Man’s adversary Yellowjacket being zapped in the bug zapper. The perspective is constantly changing and the sequences in which Ant-Man battles the gigantic elements surrounding him are beautifully realized.

entertainment “The Best of Gene Pitney” show

MAREEBA INTERNATIONAL CLUB invites you to a...

FRIULANI NIGHT! One of the unsung heroes of the rock and roll era, Gene Pitney crossed paths with a wide array of rock royalty – from Phil Spector, The Rolling Stones to Ricky Nelson and Carole King– while amassing a sizable string of hits. Pitney arrived on the scene in the late Fifties as a gifted songwriter, capable musician and incredible singer. His dramatic tenor voice, given to piercing climaxes, was among the more remarkable voices of the age. Like Del Shannon and Roy Orbison, Gene Pitney was most expressive with songs of suffering.

Gene Pitney’s unique sound and amazing harmonies have stood the test of time. Now at last! “The Best of Gene Pitney” is a sensational reproduction of his greatest hits. The unmistakable voice of Pitney will be heard again through the talents of Eddie Daniels - vocally perfect and musically excellent. Eddie has a vocal ability that most entertainer’s envy and an amazing ability to mimic legendary superstars. It’s no wonder that he is regarded in the industry as Australia’s foremost vocal impressionist. It’s not just his three octave range and

inherent vocal ability that makes Eddie special but also his quick sense of humor, his instant likeable personality, endless enthusiasm and tireless professionalism that ensure his audience enjoys every minute he is on stage. He was crowned the “King of Cabaret” and labeled as a “Master Performer” by the Sydney entertainment critics, a well earned accolade from hard critics in a very competitive market. See “The best of Gene Pitney show” at the Atherton International Club, on Saturday, August 1.

The LAND KAP continues fight for the bush STATE Katter’s Australia Party duo Shane Knuth and Robbie Katter are not leaving anything in the tank ahead of electoral redistribution in 2016. Both Mr Knuth (Dalrymple) and Mr Katter (Mt Isa) oversee two of the largest regional electorates in Queensland as it is. Electoral Commission Queensland (ECQ) officials have indicated to the pair that potentially three or four regional or rural-based seats could be abolished. Redistribution occurs between a state election and are typically based around voting numbers or when certain changes have impacted the electorate. For the KAP duo – it could well mean their already huge electorates will expand even further – which will stretch them and their resources even further. Mr Knuth said: “Back in 1986 we had 89 members of Parliament represent-

ing 17,500 constituents; today we still have 89 members but with an average of 33,500 constituents. “Under the current system, MPs in the regional areas are travelling further and further as the population drains into the urban centres, we have seen regional Queensland done over year in and year out. “I am not advocating for an increased amount of politicians; I’m advocating for a democratic system with representatives that are easily accessible to their constituency. “We are determined to ensure rural and regional Queensland is not robbed of more representation,” he added. “For me to visit each town in my electorate a week it would take 57 weeks to get back to the original community.”

The highs and lows of live export Federal Member for Kennedy Bob Katter spent time in the Gulf last week, meeting with pastoralists.

NORTHERN Australian pastoralists have endured one of the most trying weeks seen in Australian agricultural industry. After being informed that Indonesia would significantly cull their live export quota, pastoralists naturally feared the worst. Amidst the gloom – they received better news last Tuesday – when it was announced that China would become a new export destination for our cattle. Federal Member for Kennedy Bob Katter visited the northern reaches of his electorate last week and believed irrigation could hold the key for long-term viability of the trade. “There need to be a few dozen 1,300 hectare block irrigation grants,” he said. “The existing cattle industry and the development of Karumba as a port cannot be sacrificed to some corporate adventures that may simply starve the area of water. “Cape York Peninsula has 150,000 head of cattle, it is the same size as Victoria and has nearly three times the rainfall, yet Victoria has nearly 4.5 million head of cattle. “If they allow us the minute amount of irrigation blocks that we require - we’re talking about .1 per cent of the water and .001 per cent of the land - the

benefit to the Australian economy is $7million a year.” Upon the Abbott Government’s negotiation with China, Agricultural Minister Barnaby Joyce said a live export deal was almost secured. “I was very pleased today to sign the agreement of health conditions for trade of Australian feeder and slaughter cattle to China—now it’s over to my counterpart, Minister Zhi Shuping, to sign on the dotted line and finalise the agreement between our two nations,” Minister Joyce said. “Over the past five years we’ve had a significant trade in breeder cattle with China, primarily for dairy heifers. Now, I’m pleased to announce we are a step closer to the commencement in trade in live slaughter and feeder cattle to China. “Getting the groundwork right for any new market can take time, and now the industry can prepare to begin this trade. “This will be the seventh livestock slaughter cattle export market that I’ve opened since becoming Minister—adding to Lebanon, Bahrain, Egypt, Iran, Cambodia and Thailand. “Market access is a major priority for the Australian Government—we have sent a clear message— Australia is open for business.”

QUEENSLAND’S key live export stakeholders attended a significant conference last week in Townsville. With an incredible set of circumstances parking itself over the trade in recent years, stakeholders firmly believe the time for action is now. AgForce Cattle President Bim Struss said the meeting had equal importance for anyone involved with the agricultural or pastoral industries. "In the past week we've seen Indonesia cut their quota for this current quarter to 50,000 head as opposed to 167,000 head at the same time last year," Mr Struss said.

On a stovetop: Bring ingredients to a simmer over low heat, stirring frequently until everything is combined. PRO TIP: This tastes great with a shot of bourbon in every serving, if that’s your kind of thing.

THE Atherton Roosters and Mareeba Gladiators played out a 28-all draw last Saturday evening at Roosters Stadium, with the home side claiming the Tablelands Cup. This latest instalment of the ‘Tablelands Derby’, which is always eagerly anticipated – produced one of the most bizarre spectacles you could ever possibly witness in your sporting life. There were drastic lead changes, players sin-binned and topping it all off; utter confusion, when a Roosters player cannoned into an on-field Gladiators trainer, with a minute left in the match. With the scores deadlocked, a try would have almost certainly granted the Roosters victory. The referee opted to pack a scrum, which didn’t particularly suit either team’s plight. Earlier in the evening, it appeared the hosts would secure derby bragging rights without raising a sweat. After receiving a number of beneficial penalties on their two opening sets, the Roosters had established an early 10-0 lead, with the exceptional Timoli Nawaibalavu scoring an early double. Nawaibalavu’s surname is one of the most challenging to pronounce across the CDRL – with the Gladiators defence having just as much of a challenge stopping him near the try line. The Gladiators received initial good service from Robert Pedersen and David Grainer, who toiled manfully in the middle of the field. Sensing they needed to throw caution to the wind, the visitors began to throw the ball out wide and exposed a weak leftcover Roosters defence. Ian King would capitalise on this build up and edge his side within striking distance – but on the cusp of half time and with momentum on their side, Junior Neemia was sin binned on 34 minutes. After objecting to a lingering tackle, Neemia displayed his displeasure to an

opponent by dishing out a cheeky slap. Despite having a man advantage going into the second half, the hosts would have been disappointed to only have put on an additional converted try, during Neemia’s time in the changeroom. Just as Roosters supporters may have thought victory was secure leading 16-6, Darryl Grant earned time in the sin bin for abuse toward the referee. This sparked the Gladiators into new found life, putting on an unconceivable (at the time) four tries in only 12 minutes. Utilising their exceptional speed through quick cut-out play - Rhylan Reys and Dwayne Williams joined Frank Koroi’s double on the scoresheet – during this unforgettable passage of play. Holding a 28-16 lead with only 10 minutes remaining, the travelling Mareeba contingent was extremely vocal and confident of a positive result. They were brutally silenced four minutes later, when ex-Gladiator Eddie Tokahari crossed over for the home side, which was their first attacking set near the Gladiators line for 22 minutes of play. Victory began to slip for the Gladiators even further, with silly ‘piggyback’ penalties gifting the home side greater field position off the following set. From these indiscretions, Roosters halfback Ned Blackman levelled the scores, with four minutes left on the clock. Grant would have an opportunity to sink a winning field goal, but shanked his 28m effort wide left. The Gladiators completed their ensuing set mistake-free, but didn’t hurt the hosts on their 5th tackle kick. Surging toward the try line after breaking through the line, the Roosters appeared destined to score. However, the attacker in question ran directly into an on-field Gladiators trainer with a minute left. It was not the fault of the trainer, as he stood perfectly still. But it did add another chapter of Tablelands rugby league folklore, with the draw benefiting the hosts.

THE Comets began life in a revamped Mareeba Basketball League last Thursday night with a solid 61-41 victory over the Barras. In order to maintain a competitive competition – several players have rotated rosters – in a bid to generate close

matches and develop strong rivalries. The Barras, who finished the last regular season winless, showed off their new recruit Clinton Eales on the night. Opening exchanges between both sides were typical of a round one matchup. Build up play was scrappy at times as both sides tried to find their rhythm. But, when you can bring in talent off the bench like the Comets can, things often have a way in turning out well for you. Once Fabio Nocilla had stamped his authority on the game, the Barras struggled to get any real flow in their game. Nocilla’s efforts were only enhanced by Matthew Frisnia, who’s driving to the hoop was nothing short of awesome to watch. The even sprinkling of experience and youth across all teams should ensure one of the most memorable seasons in recent times. Ladies basketball powerhouse the Baiada Steggles also began their premiership defence in ruthless fashion, crushing the Serial Killers 74-43 two nights earlier. EXPRESS sPORT United we stand- 70 years of MUFC By Justin Fris

THERE are few better feelings in Mareeba than approaching Borzi Park on a mild Saturday evening during the football season. With a light breeze gently tugging you along, you are greeted by a venue which has accommodated some of finest footballers and matches in FNQ football history. All sorts of emotions are running through your head as you pass through the turnstiles. A sense of magic, sense of belong; a sense of family. Last Saturday night, Mareeba United Football Club faithful formally celebrated their 70th anniversary amid great heritage and fanfare. Prior to the evening, MUFC president Raymond Cater said he was excited about the evening and outlined many former players across several generations who would be in attendance. But in order to provide context and gain unparallel insight into what representing the infamous orange means, one must learn from those in the know. The Bulls enjoyed a golden area in the early to mid sixties, where for the majority of this period they went undefeated. One member of this coveted team was Mario Battistin, who graced the hallowed wings for several seasons. Mr Battistin said the European influence at the club during the time was very prominent; along with a healthy rivalry between themselves and Dimbulah. “But even if there was a bit of push and shoving on the pitch, we would all have a beer together in the pub after the game and forget about it.” Volunteers play an integral part of current day to day operations at the club, with Mr Battistin adding: “They are doing a good job, as they are great volunteers.” Crowds have always flocked to Borzi Park down the years, particularly in the 1970’s and 80’s. It was not un-

common to see 2000 people cram into the stands and cheer for their beloved Bulls. Visiting teams to Mareeba have always found plenty of helpful advice given to them during the game from Bulls faithful; however it has always been in good fun. Inaugural winners of the iconic ‘Crad Evans’ Shield back in 1963, the club has gone on to replicate the success a further five times. MUFC also spent time in the Qld state league, where junior development flourished. These elements are coupled with the rare distinction of having two former youth-level Australian captains pass through the doors; Nicolus Panetta (U/17) and Wayne Srhoj (U/23). Along with national selection, Srhoj spent considerable time in both the old National Soccer League (Brisbane Strikers) and A-League (Perth Glory and Melbourne Heart) before a brief stint in Romania. Reflecting with current Premier Men’s coach Alex Srhoj, the pair agreed that family values and a positive attitude were two common traits held by the club. “The relationship between the older players and the younger players has always been strong,” Alex said. “The generation above would always help on and off the field; and you still have these good memories and relationships to this day.” Wayne said that the values instilled from the canteen to the president (and everyone in between) held him in good stead during his formative years; and were taken with him onto the national stage. “There’s a high level of respect towards young and old,” Alex added. “You were always taught to respect everyone; you were always taught to value the opportunity and to put others before you. “It wasn’t so much on the field; but off the field where you got taught a majority of life’s lessons.” The Bulls are currently undefeated in the league this season and are in the frame to add more silverware.
