No public consultation on electoral overhaul for Qld
By Justin Fris LAST Thursday evening marked a watershed evening for state politics in Queensland for a variety of reasons. The Liberal National Party Oppositioninspired Electoral (Improving Representation) and Other Legislation Amendment Bill was debated heatedly into the late hours of Thursday evening, when a curveball from the Palaszczuk Government threw chaos across the chamber. The Bill originally had the sole intention of increasing the number of MP’s across the state from 89 to 93, in a bid to uphold sufficient regional representation in parliament. Both the LNP and the Katter’s Australia Party had attempted to get the Bill passed last year, but it was unsuccessful on both occasions. However with the support of new Independent Rob Pyne (Member for Cairns), the Bill (in its original form) seemingly had the numbers to get across the line. Member for Cook Billy Gordon didn’t share the view of increasing regional parliamentary representation in our state and
sided with the Palaszczuk Government on rejecting the Bill’s original outline. Transparent democracy in Qld then took a hit. With only 18 minutes notice – and with no public consultation with any Qld voter – State Attorney General Yvette D’Ath suddenly introduced a major amendment to the Bill. Ms D’Ath’s amendment involved a major overhaul of Queensland’s voting system, making preferential voting no longer optional. From 2018, all Qld voters will no longer be able to select one preferred candidate – they will be forced into preferential voting. Prior to the vote on the amended Bill, Ms D’Ath told the parliament: “Members opposite say that they have not had the chance to consult their constituents on our amendments, but can they truly say that they have consulted their constituents before they introduced this Bill on Tuesday morning? “The Bill is very different to what they introduced into this parliament last year.” CONTINUED PAGE 4

History behind Bevan’s nomination MALANDA’s own Kate Bevan is excited about the reinstatement of ‘Dairy Queens’ at the 2016 Malanda Show. Bevan – who has a unique family connection with the Show – was nominated for the competition by fellow local Kirsten Veivers (Dairy Australia’s FNQ Young Dairy Network co-ordinator). Despite being only 20, Kate has attended the Show for several years. If she is victorious in the ‘Dairy Queen’ competition in 2016, she will match the effort of her late mother Cherie, who was crowned ‘Dairy Queen’ in 1983. “I’ve been around the Show for a long time; we’ve been showing cows for close to 20 years,”

she said. “We were always impressed with the ‘Dairy Queen’ competition because mum still had some things around the house from when she won, like the black swan trophy.” Having relocated to Brisbane to study law at Griffith University (currently in her third year), Kate still always finds time in her schedule to attend the Show each year. “I like the atmosphere of it,” she said. “It’s a fairly small dairy community up here but we all go to the Show. It’s hard to keep in contact during the year, but when you go back it’s like you never left. It’s a really good feeling.”
ST STEPHEN’S Catholic College student Elyse Miller is preparing to represent Queensland in the upcoming national ‘Miss World Australia’ model pageant (for women aged between 17 and 24) in Melbourne. An educated and modest young lady from Dimbulah, Elyse has always had a solid passion for modelling. “On the day (during a model shoot or competition), it’s all about staying calm and not thinking about it too much,” she said. Reputable modelling agencies FRM Model Management (based out of Melbourne) and Bella Model Management (Sydney) have already signed Elyse on their books, which will see her travel regularly to participate in various model shoots and shows. Elyse is one of eight Qld finalists who will compete for the national crown. However, there is more to her than just modelling. A Year 12 student who
achieves at a high level, Elyse is extremely passionate about a career in law and is keen to enter the industry to lend her support to a variety of causes. “I just want to bring attention to the important things,” she said. “I’d like to work specifically in family law.” Elyse’s manager Barbara Head said that Elyse’s modelling experience should hold her in good stead for the national final. “Elyse has had experience from the age of 12 with a modelling agency, so she has done a lot of runway work and photographic work,” she said. “Those are a lot of the prerequisites – along with posture, getting along with people, being a role model and raising awareness and money for charity.” If you are interested in sponsoring Elyse or interested in assisting with her donation total towards the Variety Children’s Charity, please visit: www.missworldaustralia2016.everydayhero.com.au/help-elyse-raisemoney-for-variety

‘Case dismissed’ in de-amalgamation cash split By Justin Fris THE Tablelands Regional Council had their judicial review application into the de-amalgamation cash split dismissed on all grounds last Friday morning in Cairns. Both the Mareeba Shire Council and TRC are keen to move on from the matter and work cooperatively in future projects, should they arise. TRC Mayor Joe Paronella said: “Council went in to bat for our community, taking a calculated risk to try and get the best outcome for our ratepayers and a fairer cash split,” he
explained. “Based on legal advice, Council understood that there was a 50/50 chance for a positive outcome, with the onus of proof on the TRC. “I understand that a strong, sound case was put forward by the previous Council, however the ruling has not gone in Tablelands Regional Council’s favour. “Whilst it is disappointing not to have a favourable outcome from this legal challenge, we are now able to move beyond amalgamation and de-amalgamation and focus on our core role of providing good governance and improv-
ing the services to our communities within the Tablelands region.” Mayor Paronella added that a subsequent hearing will be held in May to determine the cost of legal fees, but ratepayers wouldn’t be impacted financially. “Ratepayers will not have any further financial impact, as all funds associated with the cash split ruling by Deputy Premier Jackie Trad have already been set aside and costs associated with the legal challenge are covered within the budget for this financial year. “As part of budget deliberations for 2016/17,
my fellow councillors and I will be reviewing all elements to ensure that we deliver cost effective services and sound financial management for the ongoing sustainability of this Council. “We will work in a respectful and collaborative manner with Mareeba Shire Council going forward to achieve regional benefits.” MSC Mayor Tom Gilmore said: “We now move on - as the matter has officially been resolved. In every relationship there is always going to be bumps in the road. “I’m hopeful that the two councils can progress alongside each other into the future.”
Council adopts Rail Interface Agreement THE MAREEBA Shire Council has adopted the Rail Interface Agreement pertaining responsibility for the management and treatment of open-level crossings on council controlled roads across the Shire. The Interface Agreement is a legislative requirement of the Transport (Rail Safety) Act 2010. Prior to 2010, it was a case of Queensland rail assets crossing over council assists and therefore the cost of maintaining rail crossings including signage, lights and boom gates fell on the shoulders of Queensland Rail. Since implementation of the Rail Safety Act 2010, it is now classified that it is council assets which are crossing over Queensland Rail assets; and as such, there was a switch of responsibility for the maintenance of all intersections across the state. Council is now responsible for the maintenance of signage, clear vision lines and pavement markings. Council officers have met with Queensland Rail representatives in order to clarify a number of issues of concern – in relation to responsibility for maintenance and auditing under the terms of the Interface Agreement. The Interface Agreement formalises road and rail manager responsibility for the management of level crossing infrastructure. The Interface Agreement will replace an interim Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) approved and signed off by the Local Government Association of Queensland (LGAQ), on behalf of all Queensland councils. The Interface Agreement defines infrastructure maintenance responsibilities and consequently responsibility for the associated maintenance costs. The agreement details the requirements to manage risk and recommends that regular auditing is undertaken and procedures are put in place to ensure all level crossing infrastructure and visibility corridors are maintained to a suitable standard. The Interface Agreement does not represent a major change to the scope of Council’s responsibility for infrastructure maintenance and replacement. As it stands, the MSC is responsible for all pavement marking and associated level crossing signage for a distance of 0.6 metre either side of the outside rail.

Palaszczuk Government sends parliament into chaos
FROM PAGE 1
Shadow Attorney General Ian Walker said: “Sneaking significant voting changes through the Parliament with only 18 minutes notice flies in the face of Premier Annastacia Palaszczuk’s promise to lead a government of consultation and consensus,” Mr Walker said. “What we have seen in the Parliament was a trashing of Tony Fitzgerald’s landmark integrity reforms by removing voters’ choice at the ballot box.” “A key part of the Fitzgerald reforms that transformed Queensland was the implementation of optional preferential voting, which gives voters a choice if they want to preference and how many preferences they want to
give. “Queenslanders will no longer be able to just vote 1 for the candidate of their choice if they wish.” The Bill (including Ms D’Ath’s amendment) was eventually passed 45-41, with support from all ALP members and independent crossbenchers. Had this new reform been in place during last year’s election, the Palaszczuk Government would have gained nine additional seats. All attempts by those opposed to Ms D’Ath’s amendment to include public consultation (via a committee process) on the matter were also voted against by all ALP members and the crossbenchers.
Lions give back at special ceremony The Tolga Lions Club distributed $11,000 to local community organisations at a special ceremony held at Tolga, last Saturday. The cheque presentation ceremony also coincided with the
planting of a new tree by the Tolga Lions Club and Tolga Historic Society. The new ‘Banana Fig tree’ to replace the one that fell late last year and was there for 99 years, was re-planted in a pot ahead of
ANZAC Day to remember all serviceman and women. Once the revitalisation works and toilet block are completed in Main Street Tolga, the tree will be permanently replanted.

LNP candidate for Kennedy Jonathan Pavetto spent time in Mareeba last week during his travels of the Kennedy electorate.
By Justin Fris
LIBERAL National Party (LNP) candidate for Kennedy Jonathan Pavetto believes it is time for a change in the federal electorate. The enterprising 24-year old from Ingham has a wealth of experience in the sugar cane industry and across a wide range of youth parliamentarian portfolios. In order to win the seat of Kennedy however, Mr Pavetto will have to topple one of the great stalwarts in Australian politics - Bob Katter. Mr Katter has held the seat since 1993. A fierce advocate for regional and remote issues, Mr Katter has built a tremendous rapport across the electorate for many years. Things changed in 2013 however, with a substantial swing (16.15 per cent) going against him, to LNP candidate Noeline Ikin. Ill health has resulted in Ms Ikin having to withdraw her candidacy aspirations, with Mr Pavetto successfully pre-selected in March.
With an election looming, both Mr Katter and Mr Pavetto have commenced their canvassing of the Kennedy electorate. Mr Pavetto is well aware of Mr Katter’s standing in Australian politics, however believes he can bring some positive change to the electorate. “In North Queensland – particularly outside of Townsville and Cairns – we’ve been missing out for far too long,” he said. “It’s been pretty clear that there has been a lot of investment across the country and we haven’t seen a lot of it.” Mr Pavetto said that with the recent release of the Northern Australia White Paper, the spotlight on Northern Australia has never been brighter – with now, the time to strike. “What I bring to the table is making sure we don’t continue to miss out,” he said. “It’s time critical that we need a representative in government whose case can be heard by the Treasurer, Prime Minister and the Minister for

Northern Australia.” Mr Pavetto is also acutely aware of the various mental health and unemployment issues that many young people across the Kennedy electorate face each day. “I’m very passionate about youth unemployment,” he said. “Youth unemployment across FNQ is at a crisis level. “It has been for some time and we need to be doing something about it. The best way to tackle this, is to get economic activity happening.” During his travels across the electorate, Mr Pavetto said he had received good feedback from a broad cross section of voters. “Noeline did an exceptional job,” he said. “And the results at the last election showed that. I think the mood across the electorate now is that Bob’s time has come to an end. “People I’m talking to are very ready for generational change. They like a young face, a new perspective and a fresh take on the challenges that we have.”

DID YOU KNOW
VOTING RULES HAVE CHANGED?
Make your vote count this federal election. At this year’s federal election, the way you vote for the Senate has changed and it’s important that you understand how to vote correctly.
If you choose to vote below the line, you must number at least 12 boxes, from 1 to 12, for individual candidates in the order of your choice.
On the large white Senate ballot paper, you can choose to vote either above or below the line.
Voting for the House of Representatives has not changed. On the green ballot paper, you must number every box, starting with the number ‘1’ for your first choice, ‘2’ for your second choice and so on until you have numbered every box.
If you choose to vote above the line, you now need to number at least 6 boxes. Put the number ‘1’ in the box for the party or group that is your first choice, a ‘2’ for your second choice and so on until you’ve numbered at least 6 boxes.
‘How to vote’ instructions will be clearly displayed on your ballot paper. Don’t worry if you make a mistake — just ask for another ballot paper.
This federal election your vote will help shape Australia.

Enterprising local student Max Ridinsky is determined to travel to Russia and re-connect with the Russian side of his family.
Max’s mission to Russia PROACTIVE Cairns Hinterland Steiner School student Max Ridinsky is committed to a very special journey this year. With WWII having separated both sides (Australian and Russian) of his family, Max plans to travel to Saint Petersburg with the intent of reconnecting with the Russian side of his family and learning more about his maternal grandfather, Genardy, who died before his birth. “My mother had planned to visit Saint Petersburg years ago, but then Chernobyl blew up and she was advised not to travel to Russia at the time,” Max said. Genardy was separated from his family during WWII and believed they had died during the Siege of Leningrad. After the war, he had a choice of moving to Canada, Australia or the US – he chose Australia. He would later marry Max’s grandmother (Patricia) and work earnestly as an electrician. Max is desperate to learn more about his family’s experiences in Russia.
Prior to his passing in 1986, Genardy regularly wrote to his mother Elizabeth after the International Red Cross informed him that his mother and family were searching for him. Max will travel via a youth exchange program to a school in Russia, where he will stay with a local host family and try to track down his relatives. “I’m particularly interested in travelling to St Petersburg, as I love the look of their architecture,” he said. Naturally, such a trip requires a lot of money. Max has been working diligently during the school holidays to earn the majority of his required funds, however he is calling on those who may wish to assist him to get behind his cause. “I need to re-establish contact while there are still living members of my Russian family who knew my grandfather or have stories handed down about him,” said Max. “Otherwise, I will lose him forever.” If you wish to help a proactive and intellectual young man’s dream come true, please email pandjridinsky@ bigpond.com or visit his crowd funding web page: https://www.gofundme.com/7javaez

LANDOWNERS across the Far North who are disenchanted by the Palaszczuk Government’s proposed reforms to vegetation management are being encouraged to sign an official e-petition. Launched by Shadow Natural Resources Minister Andrew Cripps last week, the petition gives landowners another avenue to register their disapproval, with personal landowner submissions to the state-based Agriculture and Environment committee having closed on Monday. “The Palaszczuk Labor Government’s rollback of the LNP’s sensible vegetation management framework will remove property rights, reduce the productivity of the agricultural sector and threaten jobs in regional communities,” he said. “This petition is an easy yet influential way for Queenslanders to send a message to local MPs that they object to Labor’s amendments and explain the negative impact they will have on landholders across the state. “It’s vitally important in this hung parliament that landholders speak up to ensure key crossbench MPs in particular understand how passionate the rural sector is about their ability to responsibly manage vegetation on their properties.” East Barron landowner Peter Spies is extremely passionate on the matter and puts the following statement in perspective for our readership. “My overriding issue with the Bill is that its introduction in the Queensland Parliament on March 17 represents yet another variation to the Vegetation Management Framework - which has been amended over 18 times since its introduction in 1999,” he said. “Ecological processes work in much longer timeframes and can be severely compromised when mismatching, constantly changing regulations are enforced. “Farmers have long called for certainty with the vegetation management regulatory framework. It should come as no surprise that I am totally opposed to continued uncertainty and attacks on the viability of landholders and the long-term sustainability of their businesses.
www.theexpressnewspaper.com.au
Ground cover, not tree cover, determines runoff and erosion risk. “This Bill is causing landholders an inordinate amount of stress and worry. Landholders have raised their concerns with me - as an Agforce representative in particular - to the introduction of High Value Regrowth as an additional layer of regulation under the Vegetation Management Framework on leasehold, freehold and indigenous land. “At a recent auction of the Emissions Reduction Fund, selling carbon abatement was valued at $12.25 per tonne. This Category C high-value regrowth layer appears hastily prepared in a ‘desktop’ mapping exercise, with associated errors including areas of grassland with little or no trees, non-native vegetation such as orchards, plantation timber and bare earth. “Over 10 per cent of the Tablelands cleared agricultural area appears covered by this mapping.” Mr Spies added: “Other aspects of this proposed Bill, raised with me by concerned landholders, includes the removal of High-Value agriculture and irrigated High-Value agriculture from the Vegetation Management Framework and re-introducing the ‘reverse onus-of-proof’. “This is a direct affront to the rights and liberties of farmers. This relegates farmers clearing vegetation to a level below that of criminals, where they are denied common justice. “It will mean farmers are presumed guilty until they are proven innocent, and refused the possibility of making a mistake. Even serious criminals, murderers and paedophiles are innocent until proven guilty. “It is crucial. If landholders want to retain their rights to manage their land and maintain productivity at current levels or further develop, that they communicate this to government through their local MP or petition. “This Bill severely impacts on the ability of farm managers to plan and implement effective long-term property and business management decisions.” For landowners who are interested in accessing the epetition, it can be accessed via: http://www.parliament. qld.gov.au/work-of-assembly/petitions/e-petitions

Commitment to Showgrounds upgrade By Justin Fris
The Malanda Showgrounds will receive added upgrades prior to the 100th anniversary in July.
TABLELANDS Regional councillors approved a further $30,000 (excluding GST) in funds to be put towards an upgrade of the Malanda Showgrounds on April 14. Funded through the TRC’s Community and Regional Planning Department, the funds will see much needed upgrades to the showground’s ring road carried out. The Malanda Show Society – which will be celebrating their 100th Show in July – has welcomed the announcement. Malanda Show Society secretary Carl Grandelis said the announcement was another step towards a bumper year for the Show. “The ring road is in a serious need of an upgrade,” he said. “The works will fix up the areas that need fixing and any works of this nature which are announced are welcomed.” In a major coup for the Tablelands, Queensland Governor Paul de Jersey will be attending the official opening on the Fri-
New lawyer on the block A passion for helping others has seen locally known lawyer, Lisa Stansfield, open her own law firm ‘Lisa Stansfield Lawyers’. The idea had been growing for some time and after completing a Queensland Law Society’s Management Course, Lisa built up the courage to finally make the leap to open her own firm. After months of preparation and planning, with her husband and long time Cairns lawyer Chris Rose by her side, the doors were officially opened last month. Lisa wanted an office and business environment that was out of the norm for a lawyer’s office – she wanted something warm and welcoming for her clients – “No marble hallways here,” laughs Lisa. “The new Cairns based office features an intimate board room for meetings, vibrant art work on the walls and open work stations, along with a lot of other friendly additions,” said Lisa. Lisa Stansfield Lawyers offers expert family law advice from Lisa herself. A finalist in the Queensland Woman Lawyer 2015 awards, Lisa has an advanced Masters degree in applied family law and has expertise in wills, estate planning,
and succession law, often dealing with contested estates. To offer the full ‘law service’ Lisa also gives professional advice on other general law matters. “We want to be able to assist everyone and if we can’t help you, we will happily point you in the direction of someone who can.” With strong ties to the local area and having built a referral system amongst her many clients, financial advisers, and yes, other lawyers, Lisa has been off and running since the March opening; and is today caring for and advising many clients across the region. A well as volunteering her services to the Cairns Community Legal Centre and Mareeba Outreach Program, Lisa now also has office space in Mareeba at the Post Office Centre and regularly travels to meet with clients. Division 3 councillor Anthony Ball voiced his passion behind the upgrade, encouraging councillors to unite behind the event. “A 100th anniversary is an event that not many of us get to witness in our lifetime,” he said. “I think there is a real opportunity here for Council to probably make some improvements to the showgrounds in preparation for the Show – along with other users of the facility. It is a heavily used ground on that road, with the markets, junior rugby league and the cattle sales. With the Show this year, there is already international interest attending; and from all reports, there will be a record number of exhibits.” TRC Mayor Joe Paronella added: “Once again, this is a win-win situation. We may be spending extra now, but it’s going to save us many years in routine maintenance.”
Tribute to man who made a great impact on Tablelands This Saturday (April 30) at 10 am, there will be the unveiling of an inscription on a rock - to a man who made a great impact for good on the Tablelands. Saeed de Ridder – who died last year in September – will be remembered as an environmentalist, who lived and worked on the Tablelands. He was responsible for many tree plantings in our part of the world, revegetation and for the saving of many endangered trees. There is one such tree in the centre of the courtyard - between the TRC Library and the Ravenshoe Visitor Centre, in Moore Street, Ravenshoe. Saeed’s rock has been placed at the foot of this wonderful tree that he loved. Former TRC Division 2 councillor Shaaron Linwood said: “He was one of the finest men I have ever met and I am
so very blessed to have been counted amongst his friends. “He was a passionate advocate for the natural environment and a fighter for truth and justice with a deep conviction and willingness to speak up when he saw injustice and oppression in any form and that steadfastness won him the respect of all, even those who did not agree with him. “He was one of the most eloquent men I ever met; and that eloquence was matched by his beautiful script - strong, flowing broad strokes - I have never seen such beautiful handwriting.” The Ravenshoe Visitor Centre invites you all to this informal gathering at 10 am on Saturday. Saeed’s wife Carina will unveil the inscribed rock to honour him.

Mt Everest conqueror heads to Atherton RESIDENTS across the Tablelands have the rare opportunity to learn from someone who has conquered one of the most imposing physical landmarks on Earth – Mt Everest. Paul Hockey, who was the first (so called, in his words) disabled individual to ever climb the mountain, will present his experiences on Saturday, May 7 at the Atherton Presbyterian Church from 2pm. In his eyes, Mr Hockey believes he is not disabled. The Everest-inspired climb
raised much needed funds for charities and he is hoping to follow up with another imposing climb in 2017. Mr Hockey hopes to climb the K2 mountain, which is located on the ChinaPakistan border. This attempt would be the first disabled ascent of the mountain. His courage, mental toughness and enthusiasm in taking on a challenge is highly regarded by many and this is an afternoon that you do not want to miss.

Cardie Peters is extremely proud about the new sign in Centenary Park, which outlines its creation.
Cardie’s passion
By Justin Fris
FEW in Mareeba have more work ethic and passion for the betterment of community causes than Cardie Peters. Mr Peters – who has been involved in a multitude of community organisations for over four decades – was one of many who were instrumental in the creation of Centenary Park, which is only a stone’s throw from the Mareeba Heritage and Information Centre. Initial development of the facility began in 1969, with the Mareeba Lions Club at the forefront during this embryonic stage. Mr Peters would then become chairmen of a combined service club committee between 1978 and 1982, where the fruits of the project labour would come to life. And thanks to further goodwill of the Mareeba Lions Club and Girle’s Sign Shop, locals and travellers alike are now able to read the story behind the park’s
creation (opposite the Heritage Centre entrance), after a new sign was erected a fortnight ago. “I actually wrote that story (on the sign) about 38 years ago,” he said. “And I thought what better place than to put it up here. “The Mareeba Lions Club sponsored and paid for the making of the sign by Girle’s Signs and they put it up for us. “And it has worked out great. We now have all the trees with all of the plaques, with everything having been planted as well.” Centenary Park means a great deal to Mr Peters, who still gets a real thrill out of seeing locals and tourists enjoy its facilities. “It (Centenary Park) means a great deal to me,” he said. “It’s great to see it being used so well. It gives me a lot of pleasure to think that 40 years ago, when myself and the other members decided to build it, that it would be like it is today. “I’m very proud of it.”

Club provides shelter
Eddie Toffanello (Dimbulah Lions Club President), Geoff Lawrance, Brendon Goldsworthy and John Anziliero (Dimbulah Lions Club Secretary) are thrilled with Dimbulah’s new bus shelter.
The ‘Crowdfunding’ craze will head to Mareeba, after success in Malanda.
‘Crowdfunding’ helps Tablelands events
By Justin Fris MEMBERS of the Dimbulah Lions Club (DLC) have recently completed a new bus stop (opposite Dimbulah State School), which will be of great assistance to local school students in the region. Prior to the shelter’s completion, children were often required to huddle under a nearby tree in a bid to seek refuge from bad weather. Naturally, this is extremely hazardous during stormy weather; and the funds raised from local Dimbulah Lions Club events have been able to make the project a reality. Overall, the project cost $4300 – with the community’s assistance in supporting the DLC absolutely invaluable. Former DLC president Geoff Lawrance had long been in favour of the idea - and with support from fellow members and current president Eddie Toffanello, the wheels in motion began to turn. “It took about a year to get all the plans in place, and then Eddie camead in as president and it kept movHalf page press : Finished size 188mm
ing along,” DLC member Brendon Goldsworthy said. “Once we decided to do it and got all the materials, it was pretty much all systems go.” Several members took part in the construction of the shelter, with Eddie Hatchman donating the steel and Dean Mitchell assisting with the concreting. “When it used to rain, I used to see children huddling under the tree trying to keep out of the rain when they got off the bus or were waiting for their parents,” Mr Lawrance said. “I thought if we put up a shelter, they’d at least have somewhere to keep out of the weather.” Students can access school bus services to and from Mareeba from the Dimbulah shelter, with locals also able to travel on the services. Mr Toffanello said he was excited about the shelter and was preparing for a busy month ahead of local community events which the DLC will be assisting with. The DLC would also like to remind everyone about their annual ‘Dimbulah Lions Festival’, which will be heldxon Saturday,(w) Mayset 28 throughout the town centre. (h) 262mm up at 100%
The good citizens of Malanda could hardly believe the buzz that came out of the Malanda Hotel two evenings in a row recently. Crowdfunding hopefuls from across the TRC crowded in for two ‘how to’ handson learning sessions. They also came to celebrate the first of many events run by Startup and Innovation Tablelands (ST) for 2016. There will be an encore performance for Mareeba Shire Council residents on May 9 and 10 at Mareeba Leagues Club. For readers not entirely certain what ‘Crowdfunding’ is, the simplest explanation comes from event facilitator, Christine Doan. “Crowdfunding is like a chook raffle or a lamington drive on the internet,” she said. “Asking for contributions for a worthy cause, a business or a pet project is an age-old story; the only difference today? The internet.” Malanda’s events had 30 people, with a huge variety of fundable projects from
protecting tree roos to building businesses. The Mareeba Crowdfunding sessions are expected to draw an even bigger crowd. Striking to most participants on the first evening was how much they already knew about the basic principles, once the collective knowledge in the room was drawn out. The workshop session on the second evening saw even higher energy levels as small groups worked through their stumbling blocks, often getting more help from each other than from the ST mentors on hand. All mentors had specific expertise to answer questions, guide, and encourage. The highlight of ST’s 2016 programs will be the second annual Startup Weekend Tablelands, August 20-22, in Mareeba. Don’t miss it. If you missed out or want to know more about the array of future events planned by Startup and Innovation Tablelands (ST), please email: hello@startuptableGENERIC: Rust on Navy lands.org or call 0419 656 247.

Investigation into fuel prices
The State’s peak motoring body has welcomed an announcement by the Australian Competition and Consumer Commission (ACCC) that it would carry out a study into notoriously high unleaded petrol (ULP) prices in Cairns. RACQ Executive Manager Public Policy Michael Roth said the investigation was well overdue. “We’ve long been calling on the ACCC to get to the bottom of why prices in the area are so high, and today’s announcement is welcome news to Cairns motorists who’ve been ripped off for years,” Mr Roth said. “It’s time for a fair go at the bowser in Cairns, and we’re hopeful this study will make a real difference to ULP prices in the area. “We’ve seen the impact an ACCC investigation can have on fuel prices. When a market study was carried out in Darwin prices dropped, and they remain significantly lower now than they were prior to that study.” Last Friday’s average ULP price in Cairns was 122 cents per litre (cpl), 6cpl above RACQ’s fair fuel price for the area. Cairns would be the fourth regional location to be investigated by the ACCC as part of petrol monitoring arrangements introduced in 2014, and the first location to be monitored in Queensland.

Road Safety Remuneration Tribunal disbanded IN a major victory for local producers, the ill-fated Road Safety Remuneration Tribunal has been abolished by Turnbull Government last Tuesday. Established in 2012, many family-owned truck operations had been on the rough end of specifics regarding owner-driver pay rates. Two independent studies were conducted into the long-term viability of the RSRT – with both calling for it to be abolished. Federal Member for Kennedy Bob Katter – who voted to abolish the tribunal – was scathing in his appraisal of the council in its current form “There is no doubt in my mind that this tribunal was so arrogant, one-eyed and determined not to see the point of view of the small operators that it antagonised them
beyond belief,” he said. “It not only antagonised them but, because it did not listen to them, it put forward proposals which were absolutely flawed. “Let me be very specific: the advantage that a small operator has is that he fixes his own trucks. In a big corporation they have to get people in to fix the trucks for them. “A small operator fixes his own trucks and he drives his own trucks. He is an owner-operator. His family drives the trucks. And, yes, some of them work very, very hard—maybe even work longer hours than they should—but they do this to stay alive and to be competitive. “The competitive advantage they had been removed by the tribunal's decision and the tribunal acted in an excessive and insensitive manner.”

Creative approach for road safety Support for 1m cycling law
Residents are encouraged to place a ‘life saving’ sticker’ on their bin in a bid to improve road safety.
THE Australian Road Safety Foundation (ARSF) is calling on residents throughout the Mareeba Shire Council jurisdiction to be creative in their bid to improve road safety. With the pure intent on reminding motorists the importance of road safety, the ARSF has released a series of ‘life saving’ stickers – which can be peeled onto any regular council-sized bin. The images themselves are a combination of children walking towards the road, along with speed limit signs. Recent research data from the ARSF confirms that: Fatalities on Qld roads has increased in the past two years 30 per cent of all crashes occurred in 60km/hr or less zones 88 per cent of Qld motorists surveyed admitted speeding over 5km/hr at least once on their journey ARSF CEO Russell White said: ““We believe these stickers have the potential to have a real impact on our roads.
“We have seen some very effective road safety campaigns in recent years that highlight the danger that speeding poses to children crossing streets. “The ‘Life Saving’ sticker campaign builds on this education process, by providing a real-time reminder to motorists to reduce their speed. “If someone is exceeding the speed limit, we hope these stickers will prompt them to immediately slow down. Even small changes in vehicle speed can have a dramatic impact on stopping distances.” Mr White added: “We encourage all Mareeba District residents to place a sticker on their bin. It’s a simple step but it could help to save a life,” he said. “For neighbourhood organisations it’s a particularly worthwhile initiative. The stickers can be supplied to these groups who can distribute them in their communities.”
RACQ has put its full support behind the retention of the ‘one metre’ cycling law ahead of the twoyear trial period coming to an end this week. RACQ Executive General Manager Advocacy Paul Turner said the Club had been waiting for the results of the probationary law, where motorists must keep one metre between themselves and bikes in 60km/h or lower zones and 1.5 metres in areas over 60km/h; but the safety benefits were now apparent. “Two years ago we were worried that legislation may not have the desired effect of helping bring down the number of serious and fatal crashes involving cyclists on our roads, however we’re encouraged by initial findings and it’s a move our members support,” Mr Turner said. “An RACQ survey shows more than 42 percent of Queenslanders think the rule has made the roads safer for cyclists and about the same number want the law permanently on the books. “Just 22 percent of respondents want to abolish the law. “What we absolutely need now is more advertising about the importance of this legislation from the State Government, as our research has shown while more
than 82 percent of people know it exists, a large number may not know why it will help cyclists and motorists travel alongside each other. “The only sure way to see behavioural change into the future is through further education and awareness campaigns for cyclists and motorists about safely sharing the road.” Mr Turner said RACQ acknowledged police concerns around difficulties enforcing the ‘one metre’ law, so any recommendations for better application in this area should be considered. “However the positive outcomes the rule has already had in giving motorists more certainty in how much space to allow when travelling alongside bikes, and better peace of mind for cyclists are a win for all road users,” he said. “Queensland would be taking a regressive step if it repealed the law, considering similar legislation has now also been introduced in New South Wales, South Australia, the ACT and Tasmania.” Mr Turner said implementing segregated bicycle lanes should still be a priority of all levels of government wherever possible into the future, as an added safety measure.

CAPTAIN AMERICA: CIVIL WAR After another incident involving the Avengers results in collateral damage, political pressure mounts to install a system of accountability, headed by a governing body to oversee and direct the team. The new status quo fractures the Avengers, resulting in two camps, one led by Steve Rogers and his desire for the Avengers to remain free to defend humanity without government interference, and the other following Tony Stark's surprising decision to support government oversight and accountability.

Amaroo launches brand new stage – Jannali LAST Thursday evening, a crowd gathered together to celebrate the launch of Amaroo’s latest stage – Jannali. The event was attended by the Mayor Tom Gilmore and Councilors Lenore Wyatt, Mary Graham and Kevin Davies, along with guests and residents of Amaroo. Mayor Gilmore commented on the high standard of the development of Amaroo. The latest land release is called JANNALI – meaning ‘moon’. Jannali is another very special stage, featuring 17 lots in a private cul-de-sac. At Amaroo, there are some rather interesting street names – Amaroo means ‘A beautiful place’. Similar to Bundanoon and Yarrabee, Jannali offers a sense of tranquility not often found so close to town. The new stage offers a wide selection of lot sizes, from 600 up to 1900 square metres. There are also six new lots at the top of Karobean Drive. (Karobean meaning ‘together’). Lots are selling now and

EXPRESS sPORT Classy Katrina set to make a splash in Italy Katrina Coffey with her Mareeba-based coach, June Cotter.
MUFC return to winning ways By Justin Fris
By Justin Fris
EXCEPTIONAL swimmer Katrina Coffey is poised to achieve highly at the upcoming Trisome games in Italy, which will be held between July 15-22. Despite living with Down’s Syndrome, Katrina has never let anything get in her way of achieving highly. She has already travelled interstate and overseas to various swimming championships and always returned a winner in more ways than one. Her passion and swimming tactical knowledge is limitless – and she works feverously every day to maximise her performance in the pool. Along with swimming commitments, Katrina enjoys ballet and tap dancing - all activities she believes are a personal way of expressing herself as a person. “I love to express how I feel,” she said. “I think being able to represent my country will be a wonderful experience.” Since her relocation from Brisbane, Katrina has been training with Mareeba Wildcats Swimming Club coach, June Cotter. The pair have formed a very special bond, with Ms
Cotter ensuring that Katrina is getting the most out of every session they have together. “It’s really good that she is able to do all of the strokes,” she said. “I think that is really wonderful because not only has she been able to do all of the strokes, she does them over a variety of distances. “It’s opened up my learning skills as a coach as well, because it is a different field for me.” Katrina’s mother Vicki said that a lot of people had put a lot of time in effort to helping Katrina on her journey; and that the family was eternally grateful. Unfortunately due to recent federal funding cuts, all swimmers representing Down Syndrome Swimming Australia (DSSA), do not receive any support and are required to pay exorbitant amounts to represent their country. The Coffey family need to raise $14,000 in order for Katrina to travel and compete in Italy. If you would like to make a fully tax deductable donation towards Katrina’s tally, it can be made as follows: Account Name: Katrina Coffey (DSSA Gift Account) BSB: 034074 - Account Number: 215499.
Ciggy Butts light up Stingrays
THE Mareeba United Football Club opened their 2016 FNQ Premier League account last Saturday evening, after coasting to a 3-0 win over Edge Hill United at Endeavour Park. Alex Srhoj’s men controlled the match from the off and were able to torment a leg weary United, who were playing their second match in three days. After controlling possession for much of the first half, MUFC talisman Wayne Srhoj managed to put the visitors in front on the stroke of halftime. After Ben Fresta, Dennis Allen and Stevan Cater had all played their part in the build up, Srhoj was able to fire past Tim Malysiak in the United goal. Srhoj would ooze class throughout the remainder of the contest, and have direct involvement in the final two goals. The first beneficiary was Paul Ruiz, who gleefully took advantage of Srhoj’s centimetre perfect through ball in the 67th minute. Only five minutes later, Allen
would secure the points for the visitors, after he caught Srhoj’s no look pass on a half volley, and sharply steered it into the net. Post match, Coach Srhoj said he was glad that his lads were building confidence and achieved a win for all of their hard work. “Our performances haven’t been too far off in recent weeks,” he said. “It’s nice to see us getting rewards for our effort and the boys are getting their confidence back. “It was a good all-round performance. “We were able to play our football, but at times, also change it up a bit and play a few different styles.” Srhoj brought on 15 year old Ben Dickenson as a substitute for his first-team debut and was happy that his hard work in training had been rewarded. Additionally, youngsters Jaydon Wells and John Ghensi also gave a good account of themselves when asked to step up. MUFC will have a bye this week (due to Labour Day), before they will travel to the south coast and face Innisfail on May 7, who have been in excellent form of late.
Fabio Nocilla swoops in for a handy layup for the Ciggy Butts.
By Justin Fris THE Ciggy Butts continued their mid-season renaissance in the Mareeba Basketball League, after outlasting the Stingrays 47-34 last Thursday evening. Shooting from both sides was extremely poor at times, however the Ciggy Butts were able to turn more of their scoring opportunities into points. The Stingrays were stagnate on offence during much of the first quarter, which hindered their ability to force momentum into their favour. Possession was dominated by the Ciggy Butts for the majority of this period, but they would only generate 5/14 from the field for their hard work. General play throughout the midcourt would eventually open up during the second quarter, with heaving passes and nifty screens a common sight for those watching on. Brendan Ebner was a tireless worker for the Sting-
rays, scanning the key with radar-like precision in a bid to find an open man. Through Ebner’s guidance, the young ‘Rays would eventually burst through a dull end to the second quarter and head into the half time break with a 22-19 lead. Experience often proves to be a critical component of the Mareeba Basketball League, and the Ciggy Butts benefited from a herlaculan second half performance from Warren Thomson. With Thomson unsettling the younger ‘Rays with his nous and awareness around the fringes of the key, his teammates began to win more and more of their 1v1 battles. The Ciggy Butts would finally break the game open halfway through the final quarter and never relinquished their lead. This week, the Ciggy Butts will take on the Young G’s, while the Stingrays will have a chance to bounce back against the Comets.

Bittersweet week for FNQ Heat By Justin Fris THE FNQ Heat suffered their first defeat of the 2016 National Premier League campaign last Saturday, after being defeated 2-0 by Redlands United. Backing up from their midweek 6-0 FFA Cup victory over Edge Hill United, Tim Campbell’s men drew a rare blank on their trip down to our state’s capital. The hosts made the most of their early opportunities and took the lead on 26 minutes through Michael McGowan’s header. As the match wore on, the Heat would have a flurry of chances, but ultimately were routinely denied by an imposing
Matthew Lugo in the Redlands goal. The visitors pushed hard in a bid to find an equaliser, which led to the home side sealing their victory two minutes from time. After being caught on the break, Heat defenders could only look on as fresh United substitute Tyler Brayley-Combes fired home from close range past an outstretched Kevin Ward. Post match, Campbell said: “We competed well throughout the game, and Redlands will be delighted with the result. “We’ve known for a while that these next few games coming up are crucial, so we must maintain our focus.”

Mareeba mourns loss of a local boxing legend By Justin Fris MAREEBA’s boxing community lost one of its favourite sons last week, with the tragic passing of Quinton Donahue (pictured). The details of Quinton’s passing in Townsville made headlines across the country, but that’s not what locals will remember him by. They remember Quinton as a legend – a man who was a wonderful person and become an accomplished professional boxer. Quinton’s professional career began on June 21, 1997 in Mareeba, where he would knock out Troy Halloran and begin a real purple patch of form. In November of the same year – in only his fourth bout – he would knock out Michael Sedeek and claim the Queensland State Featherweight title. But arguably the finest moment of Donahue’s career would occur in March 1998, when he would head down to Ipswich in a bid to win a national title. In a tough bout which saw him have to give every-
thing he had, Donahue would eventually knock out Colin Graham and walk away with the Australian Super Featherweight belt. In 1999, he would face arguably his toughest ever opponent during the only overseas fight in his career. Competing for the PABA (Pan Asian Boxing Association) Super Featherweight Title in Thailand, Donahue would be defeated by Yodsanan Nanthachai (who finished 57-3 in his career). Donahue was far from disgraced in his fight against Nanthachai, who would go on and notch up a series of WBA (World Boxing Association) World Super Featherweight titles. Even after his career concluded in 2013, Donahue was never far from the hearts and minds of those in Mareeba who loved him. Local boxing identities Ross Cardillo and Wayne Bryde told The Express that Quinton was notoriously disciplined during training and was extremely committed to getting the most out of every bout he competed in. RIP Quinton Donahue.

In other CDRL matches, Ivanhoes outlasted Yarrabah 40-34, Tully gave Southern Suburbs a 38-10 bath, while Edmonton and Innisfail recorded narrow victories over Mossman/Port Douglas (22-14) and Brothers Cairns (32-30) respectively. The Gladiators play Mossman/Port Douglas this Saturday at Davies Park, with kickoff from 6pm.
