Bob’s bank bash By Michael Serenc
KENNEDY MP Bob Katter has hit out at Australia’s big four banks, slamming the financial system’s unethical conduct as he pushes for a royal commission. “The royal commission is needed to expose what is going on,” he says. “For every single foreclosure…they have to sign an agreement saying the bank can do what-
ever they like. “They strip the borrower of all power. The contract just vanishes without trace. That’s duress.” Mr Katter joined forces with Labor Herbert MP Cathy O’Toole and One Nation Senators Malcolm Roberts and Rod Culleton to argue for a royal commission at a meeting of farmers, business owners and home owners in Townsville on August 20.
The veteran MP told The Express he wanted the royal commission to focus on exposing duress and unconscionable conduct by banks, the practice of recourse lending, the influence of mortgage brokers in the financial system and the possibility of establishing a Federal Reconstruction Authority to give financial help to farmers doing it tough. Mr Katter said it was ludicrous the financial system allowed the practice of recourse lending,
in which a bank can still seek financial damages from a borrower if the sale of a repossessed asset does not fully cover the cost of the original loan. “I’d estimate that close to 10 per cent of the Australian population is walking around with a slave collar around their neck carrying debts of $200,000 or $300,000, which they can never repay,” he said.

Donation boosts Avenue A GENEROUS donation by a group of bikers will help maintain an important national memorial to Australia’s fallen servicemen. The Patriots Australia Cairns Chapter donated a whopping $5172.50 to Yungaburra’s Afghanistan Avenue of Honour earlier this month, after holding a charity ride in June. The ride, which has been held annually since 2014, aims to raise money for the Avenue to help maintain it to the standard expected of a national memorial. Avenue committee secretary Karina Gibson praised the Patriots’ donation and the charity ride, which is the brainchild of ex-navy serviceman Kurt Cooper. “It’s extremely helpful, the donations have grown every year,” she said. “They’ve done a fantastic job to raise awareness and raise money for the Avenue each time. “It’s a big effort to organise something like that with that so many bikes.” Mrs Gibson said visitor numbers to the Avenue continued to grow since it was first opened in June 2013, as people paid their respects to the 41 servicemen who had lost their lives during the war in Afghanistan. “If anything it’s gaining momentum,” she said. “Some days there’s a whole page full in the visitor book…It’s pretty phenomenal.” Avenue committee deputy chairman Rod Marti said the charity ride was the memorial’s “biggest annual single fundraising event”. “It is fantastic to see this event continue and grow,” he said.
Members of the Patriots Australia Cairns Chapter motorcycle club helped raise more than $5000 for the Avenue of Honour.
Students embrace Anzac Spirit THANKS to the State Library of Queensland, who through Q ANZAC 100: Memories for a new generation, students from St Anthony’s School Dimbulah were awarded a travel bursary to visit the ‘Spirit of ANZAC Centenary Experience’, while in Cairns last month. Teacher Rachelle De Iacovo said the year 5/6 students thoroughly enjoyed themselves. While reinforcing what they already knew about World War I, they learnt so much more through the artefacts, interactive environments and special effects. “Stories told by the “servicemen and women” also gave the students a vivid perspective into what life was like on the battlefields, while the photos on display engaged the students in engrossed conversations,” said Ms De Iavoco. The students returned to school full of excitement and shared their experience with the staff and students: “The artefacts were awesome, like the moving soldier,” said Anton Palmeri. “The spirit of ANZAC museum was exciting, fun
and very thoughtful,” said Beau Hatfield. “I really liked the room with all the poppies spelling ANZAC,” said Cody Atkinson “The highlight of the place was all the weapons they used to fend for themselves,” said Kaiden Anning. “My favourite part was when all the pictures were reflected onto the wall,” said Georgina Serafin . “The excursion to spirit of ANZAC centenary was so amazing,” said Mackenzie Stephens. “I learned about how life was like during World War I” – “Alice Harrigan “The best bit was all the weapons and things they used in the war” – Marco Cappella
“I really liked the story of the young soldier,” said Matthew Bin. “The whole experience was fantastic and I really like the end room with all the photos,” said Nate Mitchell. All the students, staff, family and community of Saint Anthony’s in Dimbulah immensely appreciated the experience and know it will be one they will remember for many years to come.

‘Expose the big banks’ From P1 “The practice of recourse lending is huge.” Mr Katter dismissed Leichhardt MP Warren Entsch’s suggestion of a compensation tribunal, saying it would be as ineffective as the Australian Securities and Investments Commission (ASIC), Australian Prudential Regulation Authority (APRA) or any other existing financial regulatory body. “The laws are there but there is no-one who will enforce those
laws,” he said. “APRA and ASIC are not watchdogs, they are lapdogs.” Mr Katter said Labor and the crossbenchers were relying on the support of Mr Entsch and Dawson MP George Christensen to get a bill for the establishment of a royal commission through parliament. Mr Entsch has previously supported a royal commission into the banks. “Because Entsch has pulled out he’s isolated Christensen,” he said. “He’s not game to cross the floor.”

Veg laws not dead yet
THE fight over the State Government’s controversial vegetation laws appear set for another showdown. North Queensland minister Coralee O’Rourke said her government would not give up on its Vegetation Management (Reinstatement) and Other Legislation Amendment Bill after it was narrowly defeated 44-42 in parliament on August 18. “It was very disappointing that it wasn’t passed because we are very committed to getting that balance right between looking after our environment and growing our economy,” she said. “It is something we committed to in the 2050 Reef Plan and it’s something that we will continue to fight for.” In Atherton last Thursday for a National Disability Insurance Scheme forum, Mrs O’Rourke confirmed her government would take the Bill to the next election. However, she wouldn’t be drawn on whether Labor would have another crack at passing it in this parliamentary term. “What the Deputy Premier and Environment minister have committed to is having a conversation with UNESCO, because there is quite a concern now they could look at listing the Great Barrier Reef as in danger,” she said. “We prevented that when we put into the Reef 2050 plan that we would introduce these vegetation laws, so that is a very real risk.” Dalrymple MP Shane Knuth previously told The Express he doubted the government had the numbers to pass the bill in this parlia-

mentary term, with its defeat “another nail in the coffin”. But Mrs O’Rourke believed the laws were workable for landholders while also protecting the Great Barrier Reef. “The Reef is incredibly important. It represents a tourism industry of about 60,000 employees,” she said. “It’s about getting the balance right…. There was a more than a decade of these laws in place and the agricultural industry grew by
over $2 billion in profitability, so we know we can grow it.” Mrs O’Rourke said she was “very aware” of concerns over the vegetation laws by landowners, such as land clearing restrictions based on flawed mapping and a reversal of the onus of proof of illegal clearing on the landholder instead of the State Government. “It’s really important that we don’t jeopardise one industry over another and support both of them to grow,” she said.

LETTERS TO THE EDITOR

Census results really matter THERE has been a lot of media hype post the Census on August 9. Some of the criticism may be warranted but much of it not. In our local Mareeba area, seven dedicated local residents took on the challenging task of ensuring that every household in the Mareeba township received a household Census form together with a blue reply paid envelope for postage return of their forms. These local Census officers put in the hard slog with a commitment and dedication that I, as their area supervisor, thank them greatly for. When it is all said and done, this
The Express reserves the right to edit letters
community will owe them for their achievement. In challenging the current criticism of the Census, can I say that our Mareeba area was well covered and is barely impacted by this debate. However by completing and posting back your Census forms, we have the potential to benefit greatly from the results. I was an area supervisor for the previous Census and some of the outcomes for particular areas who completed their forms, were outstanding, none of which would have been achieved without the information that was successfully collected. The results left no room for any government at any level to
dodge their social responsibilities to them. Hence, in order to achieve the same brilliant outcomes for our Mareeba community regarding housing, hospital, aged care facilities etc we need to complete and return (in your blue envelopes – no cost to you) as soon as possible. If you want results for your community you have to put out the irrefutable evidence to prove it and this is your chance. Don't miss your opportunity or give governments the cop out to continue to overlook you. Cheryl Tonkin, Area Supervisor Mareeba 2016 Census
THE FEAST OF OUR LADY OF THE CHAIN
St Thomas’s Catholic Church, Mareeba Sunday 11th September - Mass at 2.30pm Following mass there will be a procession of the statue of Our Lady of The Chain followed by a barbeque to be held on the school grounds with hot chips, gnocchi, spaghetti, steak, sausages and a licensed bar. The tea/coffee stall will have a wonderful array of sweets including Italian cannoli, crostoli and nougat. Try your luck at the pesca with fantastic prizes to be won and don’t forget the wonderful fireworks display at 8.30pm. This year we are delighted to bring to Mareeba an entertainer direct from Brisbane. “Fortunato Isgro” is a singer/entertainer who performs throughout Australia. The style of music he performs includes English classics from the 1950’s to 1970’s, plus traditional Italian music. He plays the keyboard and guitar. Fortunato started performing professionally at the age of sixteen at various clubs and restaurants across the Gold Coast. Fortunato is a popular entertainer within the Australian-Italian community and performs at numerous Italian clubs and festivals throughout Australia, including the Ingham Australian Italian Festival.
Fix parking mess now WELL, it’s about time we see the Councillors and mayor at Tolga State School to see what can be done with parking in Catherine St. Hopefully it will be before there are more close calls or someones child or grandchild has been run over because the school is going to grow more next year. We have been fighting with council for 20 years to get something done. Ever since I started campaigning this year to be a councillor, it has been my promise to get something done and now is the time to act. When I had a meeting with the Mayor in early April this year, I was told that it would cost too much. It makes me so mad to think we have been writing letters to the council for the last 13 years, when our youngest daughter was attending the
school at the time. We have been trying to make Catherine St safer and yes, our Mayor was a councillor back then. We now have our grandchildren starting school and the traffic has got more congested. Parents are parking on footpaths, drive ways trying to find a safe place to take their children to school. I would like to thank all the parents for sending in photos and complaints to the police and council. I have been doing a lot of work with the school principal and everyone to find out what everyone would like to see happen to make it easy to drop off and pick up from the school. The response has been great . It is not rocket science to work out what to do to make Catherine St safer for all. Make Catherine St a one way going down the street and put in angle parking on the side next to the school. You can fit around 50 parking spots there, as I have measured it, and make George St an exit street, as well and go up the gravel road, which is Kenyon St to Tate Rd. Darryl Drury, Rangeview
Activists need lesson in history It’s funny how the wheel turns for social justice warriors. Remember back in the ‘90s when they worked hard to destigmatise mental illness by telling us mentally-ill people weren’t knifewielding maniacs? 26 years on we’re told that people with middle-eastern names who shout “Allahu akbar” while stabbing everyone around them are just mentally ill. It’s no wonder that social justice warriors always seem a bit dizzy; all that spinning around will do that. Peter Campion, TOLGA

Mayor excited for Mareeba MAREEBA mayor Tom Gilmore has given a ringing endorsement of the shire’s future, with several major projects looming on the horizon. Cr Gilmore spoke at length about economic development in the region at last Wednesday’s Mareeba Chamber of Commerce luncheon, saying he was excited by what the future had in store. “It’s the role of local government to assist private enterprise by providing an environment in which investors can thrive,” he said. “Where the benefits lie, private enterprise will find it, and as along as the regulatory regime within which they operate is suitable, then of course they can and will thrive.” Major projects touted for the shire include a proposed $21 million shopping centre in Mareeba, a planned $650 million eco-resort known as “KUR-World” at Myola, the $18 million Mareeba Airport upgrade and the $360 million Mt Emerald Wind Farm. The wind farm could start construction as soon as the end of this year, subject approval by the Foreign Investment Review Board.

Mareeba’s industrial park is also going from strength-to-strength, now home to several local businesses, including Lindsay Australia’s $9.5 million facility, due to be operational by October. “To paraphrase the Prime Minister, there’s never been a better time,” Cr Gilmore said.
“It seems to me that Mareeba Shire at the present time is going fairly well.” Cr Gilmore said tourism and horticulture was growing in the shire, despite officially being in drought. “I can see no reason, other than a major economic shock, why this growth shouldn’t continue,” he said.

Councillor urges calm over station relocation A TABLELANDS councillor has called for cool heads in Herberton’s fire station debate as community pressure ramps up over the proposed new site. Division 1 councillor Kate Eden said there was no doubt the town’s existing station along Grace St had passed its used by date and was in a “congested location”. “The existing location of the fire station is nuts. It’s right in the middle of town, right near the crest of a hill and it must be crazy to turn trucks in there because it’s quite congested and it’s a busy spot,” she said. “The proposed location at Perkins St at least has got the benefit of having clearer lines of sight for traffic and minimal pedestrians in that area.” Queensland Fire and Emergency Services (QFES) secretly bought a property on 38 Perkins St earlier this month - before letting neighbouring residents know of their intentions. The proposed $1.2 million station will include facilities for SES training and room for two fire trucks. Cr Eden said she had spoken to neighbours of the current fire station who had little trouble with noise from the site. “They say the current practices of the fire brigade have significantly reduced noise,” she said. “They use beepers instead of sirens, and in Herberton, trucks aren’t going out at midnight very often. “But the concerns of those people likely to be affected by the new site definitely need to be taken into account.” Cr Eden said she was encouraged that QFES was willing to consult with Perkins St residents on the aesthetics of the building to ensure it fitted in appropriately with the town. “The overriding thing is people want a
www.theexpressnewspaper.com.au
new fire station for Herberton and we’re grateful we’ve got funding for it,” she said. “I’ve asked volunteers at the CWA, the Red Cross and the mining centre and basically, people are pretty comfortable with it being on Perkins St. “But none of those people are going to be directly impacted…The fact it may affect those people in the area is something that, when QFES puts the development application in, will need to be considered. “It might be possible to address them with conditions.” Cr Eden said she would be happy to meet with residents at any future town meetings organised to discuss the new station. “I’m definitely keen to get out and listen to people’s concerns on both sides,” she said. “I want to get a good understanding of all the community’s opinions.” QFES can either gain approval to build the station via Tablelands Regional Council (TRC) or the State Government. If QFES opt for the council pathway, they would need to lodge a planning application for a material change of use for the site, followed by public notification and consultation. But the State Government can bypass the council process if a minster declares the land as “community infrastructure”, which then kicks off a separate approval process. “If council officers recommended the fire station be built on Perkins St, I would have to be really confident there were good grounds to go against that, especially given that a minister could just override it anyway,” Cr Eden said.

Former paralympian Karni Liddell spoke at last week’s NDIS forum in Atherton.
Forum gives disabled hope PEOPLE with disabilities, carers and service providers were given a heads up on the National Disability Insurance Scheme (NDIS) at a local forum, as the rollout date looms closer. Disability Services Minister Coralee O’Rourke opened the forum in Atherton last Thursday, which was also attended by NDIS Queensland ambassador and former paralympian Karni Liddell. Ms Liddell gave a passionate speech about the importance of never giving up in life and how valuable the NDIS would be to people with a disability. “I believe the NDIS is going to bring a massive cultural shift, and the most disabling thing

I believe about having a disability is other people’s assumptions about what we can and can’t do,” she said. “The NDIS is going to provide us with the right support and services.” Ms Liddell said only four per cent of those signed up to the NDIS have a physical disability while nearly 80 per cent have an intellectual or cognitive impairment. “We all want from life the exact same thing that everybody else wants - we want to study, we want to contribute, we want to be successful, we want to socialise, have families, have relationships – do all of those really normal, everyday things,” she said.
“Hope is the most magical ingredient you can ever add to another person’s life.” Members of the audience were also able to ask NDIS officials questions on the scheme and what to expect from it. Up to 1150 new jobs are expected to be created across the Far North when the NDIS is rolled out in region from July 1, 2018. Mrs O’Rourke said she was delighted that the NDIS would be able to touch so many lives, including those on the Tablelands. “It’s the biggest social reform we’ve had in years, it’s going to change completely the way people with disabilities are living their lives,” she said.
False alarm has nomads worried A FALSE alarm on a cane fire has served as a timely reminder for better communications between local farmers and grey nomads. Travellers Gavin Hardy, Peter Troup and wife Sharyn were “terrified” on the night of August 20 after seeing what appeared to be a bushfire approaching where they were staying at Mareeba Bush Stays along Paglietta Rd. But after campers placed several frantic calls to Triple-0, the fire turned out to be a controlled burn off, or “hazard reduction burn”, from an adjacent cane farm. “As a tourist, all we saw out the window was a fire... so we just grabbed what we could, threw it in the car along with our dogs and took off,” she said. The trio said the farmer should have contacted the caravan park owner before starting the fire, which would have avoided a mass panic. But Mrs Troup praised the response of Bush Stays owner Norm Caird for his professional and cool-headed response once he found out it was a controlled burn. “He goes above and beyond what you would expect of any caravan park owner,” she said. A QFES spokesperson said a permit was granted to the farmer to burn standing cane after 3pm on August 20.
Grey nomads Gavin Hardy, Peter and Sharyn Troup were spooked by a cane fire near their caravan park earlier this month.
“These permit conditions are standard procedure and are common at this time of year, when landholders conduct hazard reduction burns,” they said. A fire crew responded to Triple-0 calls made by campers on Saturday night to monitor the fire but determined it was under control and “no property was at risk”.

Budding flyers zoom in GOOD food, great performers and perfect weather have capped off another successful Multicultural Festival for Mareeba, as thousands of revellers celebrated at Arnold Park. About 40 different nationalities came together to celebrate the town’s rich cultural diversity on Saturday, with a host of events keeping the crowd busy. Festival committee member and Mareeba councillor Mary Graham was thrilled with the turnout. “It was a really great crowd. It was packed everywhere you went and more or less standing room only,” she said. “The weather turned out beautiful…There were quite a few people who hadn’t been there before and the feedback was good.” Cr Graham said visiting State Multicultural Affairs minister Grace Grace had an absolute blast at the festival, where she announced the event had se-

Meanwhile, children enjoyed a jumping castle and paper plane competition. “The warbird flyover was excellent, the guys did a really good job,” Mr Brady said. “It had everyone’s heads turned skyward.” Mr Brady said there was interest in learning to fly from all ages and demographics on the day. The club permanently relocated from Cairns to Mareeba in January and currently has more than 100 student pilots on the books. “There’s a lot of people interested in seeing the same sort of thing happen in the future, so we’re looking at doing an open day as a yearly event,” Mr Brady said. “There’s another couple of flying clubs locally, so it would be good to work with them and develop an event that the community can look forward to.”
TABLELANDERS wanting to earn their wings took the first step last Saturday after buzzing by Mareeba Aerodrome. The North Queensland Aero Club hosted about 200 members of the public for their inaugural open day, which doubled as their official opening. Club president Scott Brady said interest was strong amongst the crowd, who were able to talk with local instructors and get inside the cockpits of 13 aircraft on display. “There was a fair bit of interest in flight training and re-training for those who hadn’t flown in quite a while,” he said. “We also had a number of members who flew in to put their aircraft on display.” The event was highlighted by a spectacular warbird flyover and model aircraft display by Model Aero Sports Club of Tropical North Queensland.

Army invades Laura By Michael Serenc A SMALL army has been on an infrastructure building blitz in the Cape York community of Laura. 150 soldiers from several different units have been busy building $6 million worth of infrastructure projects for the town as part of the Federal Government’s Army Aboriginal Community Assistance Programme (AACAP). AACAP contingent commander Major Jack Plimmer said his team had built a new waste water treatment plant and multi-purpose facility, laid out a 1000m footpath along the Peninsula Development Rd and even put of a roof over Laura’s existing multi-purpose sport courts. “People are loving it because they’re getting some really good infrastructure they can use out of it,”
he said. “Army gets a lot of great training out of this program in being able to prepare to deploy to remote and austere environments, as we do in operations overseas. “It’s a really rewarding job to lead a diverse team of people.” The team has been working in Laura for just over four months, and should finish up at the end of September. A whopping 140 containers of equipment and supplies were moved into the town at the start of the project. Locals were also offered the chance to complete a Certificate II in Hospitality or Construction Pathways from army cooks and tradesmen. “A few of our trainees have already picked up some employment,” Major Plimmer said.
Army doctors have been offering health support with free veterinarian and dental clinics. “We’ve been planning this for two years now and the community’s really been involved the whole way through,” Major Plimmer said. “They were well prepared for our arrival….but we worked really hard to break the ice and the community’s really accepted us.” 51st Battalion Far North Queensland Regiment provided an indigenous mentor to help build links between army and the community, as well as training for local rangers. The program, which first started in 1997, selects a different remote community each year. AACAP is a joint initiative between the Department of Prime Minister and Cabinet and the Australian Army.

Exciting times ahead TWO Mareeba organisations have joined forces to maximise the region’s tourism and economic potential. The Mareeba Chamber of Commerce and Mareeba Heritage Centre appointed Janet Greenwood as joint operations manager last month in an effort to co-ordinate a push to lure more visitors to the region. The Atherton mum-of-two has spent a decade working in a similar role with not-for-profit organisations, gathering skills in financial reporting, event planning, networking and people management. “I think it’s very visionary for both committees to develop this role,” Mrs Greenwood said. “Both organisations will be able to capitalise on each other.” Mrs Greenwood, a former business owner, said tourism was one of the Chamber’s focuses, which would dovetail with the Heritage Centre. Centre president Ron Blundell said Mrs Greenwood’s position was a natural fit for both organisations. “We’re all pulling in the one direction – the Chamber is promoting Mareeba and we’re here to promote Mareeba,” he said. “Tourism’s becoming bigger in the district. People don’t realise just how much money the grey nomads put into our town…It’s a flow-on effect.” Mr Blundell said the tourism industry in Mareeba will only get bigger, including visits by Chinese tourists. “Whereas before the Asian community used to spend three or four days travelling the reef and rainforest…they’re wanting to come back a bit further,” he said. “We’ve got volunteers and staff here seven days a week, so they’re at the coalface of knowing what’s going on and they can report back to the Chamber if there’s anything they need or have

The LAND Sedge fight continues THE case for urgent funding to combat navua sedge continues to build, as a State Government minister admits it’s a “massive issue”. North Queensland Minister Coralee O’Rourke said she was well aware of the threat navua sedge posed to the Tablelands, and would be engaging Agriculture minister Leanne Donaldson for further discussion on the issue. Ms Donaldson visited the region in June to tour a Malanda property infested by the weed, which is capable of producing up to 500 million seeds per hectare and has potential to reduce grazing and pasture capacity by up to 40 per cent. “I know it’s a massive issue on the Tablelands and I’m aware it can have a significant and devastating impact on agricultural land,” she said. “I’m happy to have a conversation with Minister Donaldson in parliament this week and talk to her about the problem.” Tablelands Regional Council is currently chasing $570,000 in funding over three years from the State to combat the devastating weed. The money would be spent on vehicles, quick spray units and the establishment of a dedicated taskforce to eradicate the weed. Dalrymple MP Shane Knuth will table a petition to parliament next month in support of funding for longterm management of the weed. That includes a Queensland-first trial to eradicate navua sedge on Tablelands. “We want to play a lead role here so that other councils in the wet tropics area can follow suit,” Mr Knuth said. “We’re showing the government and the Premier that we mean business about this and we’ve got the community’s backing to highlight the seriousness of it.” Mt Garnet, Ravenshoe, Topaz and Atherton itself are just some of the towns hit hard by sedge, and Mr Knuth said it had now started to invade drier parts of the Tablelands.
Tinaroo Dam is a valuable resource for irrigations, particularly in a drought period.
Irrigators speak up A LOBBY group of Tablelands irrigators is taking their case for water conservation straight to Water Minister Anthony Lynham. Mareeba-Dimbulah Irrigation Council chairman Joe Moro said it was time Mr Lynham considered changing the threshold for when existing levels of environmental water flows kick in. “When Tinaroo dam reaches between 40 per cent and 50 per cent capacity, we move into level one environmental flows,” he said. “We believe that is too late. The environ-
mental flow reduction should occur earlier because of the fact we are in a drought situation.” The Irrigation Council has the backing of both Mareeba Shire Council and Tablelands Regional Council, which should help to bolster their case. Both shires were officially declared drought zones in late May, with Tinaroo Dam currently at level two environmental flows, but heading toward 50 per cent capacity. “The other change we’d like to see is,

Wet weather during the week initially resulted in a 10 hour stop but after further rain during the night the factory crushed out and shut down for a further 24 hours. This stop provided the opportunity to inspect the boilers and address any issues while offline. Sugar production rates and quality standards have remained high this week. The wet weather is also slowing the crop from maturing with little change in CCS and fibre week to week, both of which still remain well below budget at 11.81 and 14.88 respectively. once we enter a new level of environmental flows…it should become immediate instead of the beginning of the next month,” he said. Mr Moro said he wanted a formal review of Queensland’s water resource plan. “We’ve had some very fruitful discussions with the department about two months ago,” he said. “We think the minister will give us a fair hearing, but until we go through that process, it’s hard to know which way he’ll go.”

THE SHALLOWS is the new film on screen this week at Mareeba's Rising Sun Cinema. In the same vein as the hugely successful Jaws, this is the dramatisation of one women's survival against one of the most feared monsters of the ocean – the great white shark. Nail biting and tense, this movie was made at Village Roadshow studios on the Gold Coast, with many of the outdoor locations shot in the same area. Continuing this week is the epic Roman drama BEN HUR and the entertaining comedy BAD MOMS, with an all star cast that includes Kristen Bell, Mila Kunis and Christina Applegate.
THE SHALLOWS
In the taut thriller The Shallows, when Nancy (Blake Lively) is surfing on a secluded beach, she finds herself on the feeding ground of a great white shark. Though she is stranded only 200 yards from shore, survival proves to be the ultimate test of wills, requiring all of Nancy's ingenuity, resourcefulness and fortitude.
BEN HUR
The epic story of Judah Ben-Hur (Jack Huston), a prince falsely accused of treason by his adopted brother, an officer in the Roman army. After years at sea, Judah returns to his homeland to seek revenge, but finds redemption.

Rideshare – a win for common sense The State’s peak motoring body has hailed the pending legalisation of rideshare services in Queensland as a win for common sense. RACQ’s Paul Turner said the move would put an end to rideshare users and drivers putting themselves at legal risk, and opened the entire state to new business. “We welcome this decision by the State Government. We’ve been advocating for fairer, cheaper and more flexible transport that competition like rideshare creates, for all Queenslanders,” Mr Turner said. “More than 80 percent of RACQ members want the choice to ride in a taxi or use a ridesharing app like Uber. “The average car spends more than 90 per cent of the time stationary in a garage or car park and we believe every motorist should have the opportunity to make a dollar out of their car as their right as owner.
“Already in New South Wales, where ridesharing has been legalised in some regional centres, we’ve started to see genuine competition, with local companies setting up their own transport apps. “Tourism centres, in particular, need to be attractive to worldtravellers and be able to provide the latest in transport options including common ridesharing apps like Uber.” Mr Turner said taxis and ridesharing operators could now co-exist legally and safely in future, with taxis also retaining exclusive rights to rank and hail zones. “This is a good outcome for Queensland. We now urge the State Parliament to support these pragmatic changes and ensure a future for both our taxi and ridesharing industries,” he said. “We need to ensure costs are lowered for the entire industry and that we have the appropriate regulation to ensure the safety of passengers, drivers and their vehicles.”

Texting and driving has become one of the biggest distractions facing Queensland drivers, where the problem is now almost epidemic. RACQ’s calls for motorists to stop taking deadly texting risks coincided with the launch of Queensland Road Safety Week today, which has a day one focus on distractions. RACQ spokeswoman Lauren Ritchie said the risks associated with texting behind the wheel could not be underestimated. “Distracted driving, particularly texting, is fast becoming number one in the Fatal Five for killing Queenslanders,” Ms Ritchie said. “This is a problem so widespread and there is an ongoing battle to get cut-through, much like where we were with the drink driving message 20 years ago. “Drivers must realise how dangerous this is. They may think they’ll only be distracted for a moment, but we’re pleading with them to realise every
second their eyes are off the road the risk of a crash increases.” Ms Ritchie said there were three types of driver distraction. “There’s visual distraction, where you take your eyes off the road; there’s physical distraction, where your hands are off the wheel and there’s cognitive distraction which is when something takes your mind off driving,” she said. “Checking a phone is particularly dangerous because it taps into all three distraction categories. “We urge drivers to take a ‘not now approach’ – simply wait until you’ve reached your destination to check your device, or pull over to answer that text.” RACQ has released a YouTube video on the risks of texting and driving which can be viewed at this link - https://goo.gl/YGc5iv. You may be uncertain about some of your coworkers and your boss. You will find it easy to learn and excel. Be inquisitive about unfamiliar circumstances. Love can be heightened if you sit down and discuss your future. Investments may not be as lucrative as you thought. Go after your goals and don’t be afraid to ask for assistance. Your fight for those less fortunate is not likely to end in sweet victory.

1. In a large bowl, combine chicken, mushrooms, garlic, green onions, soy sauce, sesame oil, ginger, rice vinegar and white pepper. 2. To assemble the dumplings, place wrappers on a work surface. Spoon 1 tablespoon of the chicken mixture into the center of each wrapper. Using your finger, rub the edges of the wrappers with water. Fold the dough over the filling to create a half-moon shape, pinching the edges to seal.* 3. Heat vegetable oil in a large skillet over medium heat. Add potstickers in a single layer and cook until golden and crisp, about 2-3 minutes per side. 4. Serve immediately with soy sauce, if desired.

WINNERS ARE GRINNERS: Above, Metrogaine winners Up The Street Without a Paddle (On Foot) and below, St Stephens Catholic College (bike).
ADVENTURE and all round fun were the aim of the game as competitors ran riot at Sunday’s Metrogaine. Almost 40 teams raced their way around Mareeba on foot or by bike, keen to be first to cross the finish line at Arnold Park. Metrogaine organiser and Lions member Craig Beikoff was full of praise for the annual event, which this year hosted a mini-basketball competition, skateboard clinics and graffiti art workshop. “The feedback from the entrants in the Metrogaine was all positive,” he said. “We can definitely say it was a success.” Mr Beikoff said the skateboard clinics, jam session and competition, run by FNQ Freestyle Roller Sports Association Inc, were extremely popular with 60 people registering to be a part of it on the day. Mareeba Basketball Association also got involved in the fun, running a free throw competition. Mr Beikoff said he was keen to host a similar style of event next year, fine tuning it to give people an even better experience. “We’d definitely like to have the skate bowl activities, graffiti art and basketball in the park again because it does seem to be a good way of connecting with the youth of Mareeba,” he said. About $5000 was also raised for the Australian Lions Childhood Cancer Research Foundation on the day. 2016 Metrogaine winners Bike: St Stephens Catholic College (450 points) On Foot: Up The Street Without a Paddle (410 points) Fancy Dress Award: LJM Design Ugly Stiks Spirit Award: Yellow Yeppies Loyal Supporter Award: Mareeba Scouts

TABLELANDS school students have smashed their way to fun in a local cricket competition. Held last Thursday, four local schools competed in the inaugural Milo T20 Blast School Cup for the northern Tablelands region, which was hosted by Dimbulah State School. School HPE teacher and sports coordinator Troy Brunjes said his students thoroughly enjoyed themselves, despite not progressing to the next stage of the competition in Cairns. “They just loved it because you don’t get that opportunity to compete very often against other schools in a different sort of
event,” he said. “There were seven games happening at once, no kids were sitting out and everyone was playing. “They just had a ball.” St Thomas’ School won both the girls and boys divisions, who will now go up against the best school cricket teams in the region. Officials from Mareeba Cricket and Queensland Cricket also helped out on the day. Mr Brunjes said he had great feedback about the Cup and was hopeful the school would be able to host it again next year.

EXPRESS sPORT Roosters secure semifinals clash
Roosters under 18 half Joel Poggioli caught by the Tully defence.
The Atherton Roosters will have two sides representing the club in the 2016 Cairns District Rugby League finals, which begin this Sunday. Both the first grade and under 18 sides secured a top five finish in last Saturday’s final round of the premiership competition. At Roosters Stadium on Saturday night, the Roosters first grade played a 24all draw with Tully who led the contest 24-22 with three minutes remaining, before a penalty gave the Roosters the two points needed to lock up the final score. The one point to each side wrapped up fourth spot for the Roosters, while Tully secured fifth position in the top five mix. The two teams will now meet again in Sunday’s first semi. Innisfail finished minor premiers at the top of the points table on 40 points followed by Ivanhoes 36, Brothers 31, Atherton 28, Tully 27, Mossman 26, Ed-
monton 20, Yarrabah 15, Kangaroos 14, Mareeba 14 and Suburbs on 11. It will be the Roosters first finals appearance since 2009 – the year they were minor premiers, but fell to Brothers in the grand final. In Saturday’s under 18 match, the young Roosters needed a win to stay alive and they delivered a top effort to down Tully 32-14, securing fifth spot on the final points table. Cairns Brothers took the under 18 minor premiership on 40 points followed by Innisfail 38, Edmonton 31, Kangaroos 30, Atherton 28, Ivanhoes 26, Yarrabah 24, Tully 21, Suburbs 12 and Mareeba 10. Game times for the Roosters this Sunday at Barlow Park in Cairns are: 10am (Under 18’s vs Tully) and 4.10pm: (A-grade vs Tully). Both games will be knock-out semis with the winner staying alive in the finals series.

THE usual script that Mareeba are accustomed to may not have eventuated, but Bulls coach Alex Srhoj knows his players have the quality to rise to the occasion when it counts the most. The Bulls went down 3-2 against Southside Comets on Saturday night in Mareeba, with Comets attacker James Price scoring a 96th minute injury time winner just as it looked the match would finish in a stalemate. Mareeba went into the match looking for an improved performance after their previous loss against Edge Hill, and it was a case of déjà vu for the Bulls camp, with simple mistakes costing the side in key moments to give the Comets a chance to catch the defence off guard. The visitors promptly took advantage of it, but Mareeba also showed touches of magic with a first half goal by Paul Ruiz finishing off some great team passing moves. The home side's second goal was pure magic from Wayne Srhoj, who set up Robert Pendenza for a 2-1 lead. Southside fought back to equalise, taking advantage of the napping Bulls defence, before Price

scored the winner deep into injury time. The win means the Comets will host the club’s first ever home semi final on Sunday against Leichhardt Lions. Meanwhile, the Bulls will now focus solely on this Saturday’s major semi against Stratford. Despite the recent results, the Mareeba side has players with the experience of knowing when to step up and as they say – the cream will rise to the top went it counts. “The past couple of weeks, results wise was not what we wanted, but it’s in the past now, we can’t change it, but we can learn from it,” Srhoj stated. “Training last week was good, patches on Saturday night were great, the two goals were top shelf, now we just prepare at the level we want and be ready to perform well on Saturday night.” The Bulls reserves and youth (B) sides will also head into the finals this weekend, with both divisions playing off in the elimination semifinals. The reserves will travel down to Southside on Sunday to take on the Marlin Coast Rangers, while the youth is expected to travel to Atherton on Friday night.
MAREEBA’S newest netball courts have been put to good use, playing host to a bumper inter-club competition last Sunday. About 200 players from 21 junior teams across the Far North converged on the Bendigo Bank Recreational Precinct for a Junior Club Carnival, battling it out across four different age groups. Mareeba Netball Association president Connie Martens was thrilled with the turnout, which had teams from Tully, Cairns, Port Douglas, Ravenshoe, Atherton and Mareeba competing. “We’ve had really positive feedback from clubs who haven’t been here and they commented on how wonderful our courts looked,” she said. “The Mareeba players get to play clubs they don’t get to play

during their normal season, so they can gauge their standard…Everyone steps it up on carnival day.” The club has been using the courts since they were officially opened in July after six years of using the netballs courts at Mareeba State School and St Thomas’ Primary School. Mrs Martens said next year’s carnival would be held at Port Douglas, but Mareeba will instead host a two-day regional carnival with a host of representative teams set to compete. “We’ve also been regularly hosting an inter-town competition which involves Port Douglas and Atherton every week,” she added. Mrs Martens thanked the club’s volunteers at the carnival for their efforts on the day.
