A new Queen is crowned

BYRNES Street was the place to be on Friday night as the annual Mareeba Rodeo hosted their procession night.

As part of the downtown parade, the 2019 Mareeba Rodeo Association’s ‘Rodeo Queen’ was announced.

There were plenty of worthy candidates; however it was Kayla Amos (PICTURED) who took out the prestigious gong, whilst Clayre Girgenti and Caitlin Murray took out ‘Princess’ and ‘Miss Popularity’ respectively.

Rodeo Queen winner Kayla Amos said she was honoured to have won Rodeo Queen.

“It definitely wasn’t something I expected but it’s fantastic that I won,” she said.

“It was a wonderful experience and one that I was able to learn a lot from.

“I’d encourage anyone who is thinking about participating to give it a go, not only you do you gain plenty of confidence, you also meet lifelong friends.

“Don’t question yourself – just do it, it’s an amazing experience that you won’t forget.”

Kayla also took time to thank those who have contributed heavily throughout the Rodeo Queen process.

“I’d like to thank my family and friends, they’re always my number one supporters,” she said.

“I’d also like to recognise the Lions Club of Mareeba, they were a massive help, particularly the President Denis McKinley.

“Lastly I’d like to thank Leeann Feltrin who made my dress for the night, it was made to perfection so for that I deeply thank her.”

MSC refute Speewah petition claim IN response to the article titled “Fight for free to air TV” in last week’s edition of The Express, Mareeba Shire Council councillor Lenore Wyatt has

refuted claims made by Charlotte De Speville.

A spokesperson for Mareeba Shire Council said Cr Wyatt would like to correct the

comment made by Charlotte De Speville.

“Ms De Speville was quoted saying that Cr Wyatt informed Speewah residents that

a petition received by council regarding the TV service “showed that the majority of Speewah residents were in favour of the levy,” the spokes-

person said.

“This statement is incorrect. “Councillor Wyatt has made no comment about the petition council received.”

Mareeba Bowls Club members and Mareeba Shire Council are excited about the future of the site.

Council secure ownership of bowls club site

THE Mareeba and Memorial Bowls Club’s current site is officially under the ownership of the Mareeba Shire Council as Mayor Tom Gilmore signed the contract on Friday morning.

The landmark deal will see the Mareeba and Memorial Bowls Club hand over the premises to MSC in exchange for a new clubhouse, synthetic green and retractable shade cover – all of which will be part of the council’s million dollar plus Cedric Davies Community Hub development.

man Ray McCarthy noted his excitement about the deal.

“This is a culmination of 13 months of negotiations with the Mareeba Shire Council,” he said.

“We looked at what was happening with our bowls club some months ago and after doing a business plan we found that we had a huge premises that wasn’t being utilised – so we felt we needed to do something with it.”

Mr McCarthy said the deal secures the long-term future of the Mareeba and Memorial Bowls Club.

“While we no longer own the premises, we have a long-term

lease and there’s grant money to provide updated amenities so the bowlers can enjoy much better facilities,” he said.

“This deal secures a great asset for the town of Mareeba, the Mareeba Shire Council and the Mareeba and Memorial Bowls Club – so it’s a win-win for everybody.”

Mr McCarthy took time to thank those who have contributed heavily throughout this entire process.

“I really want to recognise all of the Mareeba Shire Council staff for working through this with me, it’s been a long process

but one that was thoroughly professional and we’ve achieved a good result for everyone,” he said.

“And I also want to thank my committee who have been behind me all the way and still run the bowls club at the same time.”

MSC Mayor Tom Gilmore, who has been in local politics for decades, expressed his delight in being involved in such an important development for the town of Mareeba.

“This is a significant step forward for Mareeba,” Cr Gilmore said.

“We make hundreds of decisions as a council every year and we often sometimes have unflattering feedback; however you have to plough through irrespective of the noise because first and foremost you know it’s the right decision for the community.”

Cr Gilmore said he would like to thank everyone who has been involved throughout the long and tedious process.

“Today is a significant day and I think the community will look back in five to ten years’ time and say it was a good decision,” he said.

Faces of the Mareeba Rodeo

Member for Cook office move “in progress” IT has been seven months since Member for Cook Cynthia Lui announced that she would be relocating her electoral office from her current address of 94 Byrnes Street, Mareeba to Cairns.

Ms Lui’s decision was one that was met with considerable opposition from Mareeba residents, as Cairns is not part of the Cook electorate.

Despite push back from angered community members in Mareeba, Ms Lui maintains her position that her decision to move her office will be one that is best for the vast electorate.

“The relocation of the office from Mareeba to Cairns is still in progress,” Ms Lui said.

“My decision is based on feedback from constituents and

what is fair for the whole electorate.

“Cairns is the most central location for the large number of constituents who live in the Cook electorate, and the best way to cover our vast electorate is from Cairns, the transport hub of Far North Queensland.”

Ms Lui said a Cairns office means that constituents from all over Cook can access the office.

“I will continue to maintain a strong presence throughout the Cook electorate so people will still have plenty of opportunities to engage with me and raise issues in person,” she said.

Ms Lui didn’t specify a date as to when she will be relocating.

Massive crowds enjoyed two days of action packed entertainment at Kerribee Park.

70th Mareeba Rodeo an “outstanding success” THE 2019 Mareeba Rodeo was a special one as it marked 70 years, and it lived up to expectations as the massive crowd enjoyed all the thrills and spills that comes with the annual event at Keribee Park.

There was the State of Origin bull ride, saddle bronc, wood chopping competition plus much more for patrons to enjoy.

Mareeba Rodeo Association President Peter Brown said the 2019 Mareeba Rodeo was a resounding success.

“This year’s event was outstanding,” he said.

“We had record crowds and every retailer and stall holder we spoke to noted that this was their best year from a trade perspective.”

Mr Brown said he believes the 2019 Mareeba Rodeo was such a success due to the preparation.

“We put in plenty of time and money to ensure the entertainment was second to none this year,” he said.

“In addition, we have some of the best facilities in the world as far as rodeos go, so I think that’s a big reason why you see

the punters coming back each and every year.

“We have set the bar really high and I love it when we exceed expectations like we were able to do this year.”

Mr Brown noted those people he would like to thank for their contribution in ensuring the 2019 Mareeba Rodeo went off without a hitch.

“Firstly I would like to recognise Shane Srhoj from Ringers Western, it was his first of three years sponsoring the event and I couldn’t have achieved this without him,” he said.

“I also want to thank Craig Melbill from Melbill’s Farm, he provided us with most of the vehicles and was so obliging.

“And lastly I want to thank the committee and volunteers – they worked tirelessly over the past 12 months and over the weekend to make sure this was a great rodeo and they certainly delivered.”

Mr Brown noted that there is not much time to rest on their laurels however, as preparations for the 2020 Mareeba Rodeo begins in August.

Traditional groups and individuals recognised for NAIDOC Week THE Mareeba Leagues Club played host to NAIDOC Week’s Caring for Country Awards courtesy of Northern Gulf Resource Management last Wednesday.

The purpose of the lunch was to recognise the outstanding contribution of traditional owner groups and individuals in natural resource management in the Northern Gulf region for 2018-19.

There were four traditional owner groups recognised for their commitment and achievements in natural resource management in the Northern Gulf, of which included the Ewamian Aboriginal Corporation, Watsonville Aboriginal Corporation, Mark Owens and Marciel

Lawrence.

One of the recipients, the Ewamian Aboriginal Corporation, discussed what an award of this nature means to the group.

“I’d like to take this opportunity to thank Northern Gulf Resource Management for recognising our group and to whoever who nominated us,” she said.

“We’re really happy with the partnership we have developed with Northern Gulf Resource Management and our neighbouring traditional groups, and we hope to continue that strong relationship moving forward.”

The Caring for Country Awards caps off a fantastic NAIDOC Week for the Ewamian Aboriginal Corporation, after Minister for Innovation and

Award recipients at last week’s Northern Gulf Resource event.

Tourism Industry Development and Minister for the Commonwealth Games Kate Jones was in Cairns last week to announce funding commitments for the region’s tourism sector.

Of Ms Jones’ $4.5 million dollar commitment, $2.3 million will be allocated to partner with the Ewamian Aboriginal Corporation (EAC) to build new tourism infrastructure and re-open the Talaroo historic hot springs near Georgetown.

“This is a very exciting time for us and we’re really looking forward to the future,” she said.

“There’s been a lot of hard work that has gone into this over the years and I want to acknowledge the rangers who have been a big part of that journey.”

Mareeba community members gathered at ANZAC Park last Monday to celebrate the region’s indigenous community as part of NAIDOC Week.

NAIDOC week in Mareeba was opened last Monday with the raising of the Aboriginal and Torres Strait flags at ANZAC Park.

A large number of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islanders made their way from the Mulungu Medical centre down to the ANZAC park for the official opening ceremony.

The ceremony included wel-

come to country, a speech from Mayor Tom Gilmore and local Mareeba resident Fallon Patolo.

Mrs Patolo was adamant about the continuation of traditions within Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people.

“One thing I wish to do for my people, for my mob, is to continue with oral traditions and oral histories,” she said.

“That is how we are going to

instil that strong cultural identity in future generations.

“I want to thank the community for showing up today, we are one mob, and we are representing our own tribes and clan groups today.”

Mayor Gilmore was expressing his ideas for a cooperative future.

“It is my belief that the future is where all of our focus of

energy should be,” he said.

“Where we talk about the prospect of appropriate housing, appropriate health, appropriate education and opportunity for all of our community.

“Not just our indigenous community alone but for all of our community.”

Mayor Gilmore wanted others to walk with “soft treads” for the future.

“May I suggest that we all walk with very soft treads on this land,” he said. “So that it’s not only good for now but for future generations.”

The NAIDOC week celebrations included a story time at the Mulungu Family and Child Centre, a Family Fun day at the Mareeba Turf Club and damper making hosted by the PCYC last Tuesday night.

Mareeba’s war history will not be forgotten with the Council receiving funding to replace markers across the town, identifying places of the Second World War significance.

Mareeba Shire Mayor Tom Gilmore said the markers of significance acknowledge and commemorate those who served Australia and its allies in wars, conflicts and peace operations.

“The markers are a reminder of the support role the Mareeba community played in defence of northern Australia during the Second World War,” Cr Gilmore said.

“I sincerely thank the Commonwealth and the Queensland Governments for funding this important project to honour and remember our war history.”

Council will install 20 markers at sites within the community that were used to support US and Australian war operations in New Guinea and the South Pacific. These sites are now of historical significance in the Mareeba township and part of its living history. The older existing markers which are deteriorating will be replaced with durable, recycled plastic marker posts. In addition, there will be a plaque installed at Anzac Park to recognise the project.

This project is funded by the Commonwealth Government Department of Veteran Affairs – Saluting their Service Commemorations Program and Queensland Government’s Queensland Veterans’ Memorial Grants Program.

Green thumbs gifted praise

2019 Mareeba champion gardener Millie Bernardi.

Gardeners put down their tools to attend the annual Mareeba District Garden Awards presentation last Monday.

The awards were held at Mareeba’s Kerribee Park where Rodeo Queen Entrants were on hand to assist with the awards presentation.

The afternoon was packed with gardening enthusiasts all eagerly awaiting the announcement of winners.

The awards this year included newly introduced categories giving a more diverse opportunity for gardeners to register their gardens for judging.

Mt Molloy State School was inducted into the Hall of Fame for winning the Most Sustainable Garden award three years in a row.

School garden specialist Juliana Russel was happy with the award and recognition. “The kids did an excellent job, they love it,” she said. “They were preparing since the start of the term”.

“We do our own garden competition at the school to give the kids an idea about the competition.

“We might give it a miss next year, give someone else a chance.”

Mt Molly Principal Dean Hardy was extremely proud of both his students and his staff.

“Our whole school community at Mt Molloy are looking forward to being able to celebrate this outstanding achievement with our students,” he said “This award is an outstanding celebration and acknowledgement of the dedication and enthusiasm all of our students display towards learning.

“It is an incredible achievement for all of our students, gardener, community volunteers, parents and staff.” he said.

Mt Molloy State School employs the integration of the Kitchen Garden Program which provided the school with money enabling them to build a brand new kitchen.

Mt Molloy State School wasn’t the only stand out contestant with Millie Bernardi winning the Champion Garden award.

Mrs Bernardi was stoked when she found out she won.

“This is my joy, this is my stress relief,” she said. “You cannot prepare a month before or two months before. “You have to have the love of gardening and the time to put the maintenance in.”

Mrs Bernardi believes that the garden should be almost ready by the time the awards roll around.

She will be preparing for next year’s competition hoping to hold her title as Champion Garden winner.

Art exhibition amazes judges The Mareeba Art Society opened its doors last Monday for the annual art exhibition held in the PCYC hall.

The exhibition, as part of the Mareeba Rodeo festivities, contained pieces from differing artists from painters, photographers, sculptors and others.

Mareeba Art Society President Faythe Keogh was happy with the numbers that came through the door. “We’ve had a consistent amount through the door,” she said. “You need people to bring their young ones so they keep coming back. “We’ve sold quite a few painting so the artists will be really happy.

“We’ve sold 2 or 3 art pieces every day.” Mrs Keogh said the judge was very impressed by the quality of the artworks. “She was really impressed with the standard of the work,” she said.

Rod and the late Sheryl Chaffey have been in the funeral industry since 1986 they took over the long established Guilfoyle’s Funeral Services in 1998. The Guilfoyle’s Funeral building Mareeba has been a funeral home since the 1920’s. Upon taking over they immediately upgraded the mortuary, arrangement rooms and selection room. The Chapels in Mareeba and Atherton together with the Memorial Gardens on the Nasser Road complex were constructed and fashioned with families in mind. EXPRESS SPORT PORT Atherton hockey goes from strength to strength

THE Atherton Tablelands Hockey fields were the place to be last Saturday as the Douglas Hockey Association travelled up to compete against local teams in a friendly interclub competition.

All ages were represented from under 13s through to open mens and ladies along with the recently established walking hockey teams.

ATHA Secretary Anne Robets said they enjoyed themselves so much they wanted to have a round robin competition as just one game wasn't enough.

Greg Mills has been the driving force behind the establishment of a new hockey club at Douglas and introduced the walking hockey concept to Atherton,” she said.

Many Douglas players stayed overnight to enjoy local hospitality, sights and entertainment.

“The event was enjoyed by

all and will be increased to four play offs next season. Atherton Tablelands Hockey association strives to keep a family focused fun social and sport activity for all ages and are welcoming to any interested new players of any age irrespective of skill ability.”

Walking Hockey is open to all ages and is a modified version of the game, all levels of skill and fitness can play, current players are aged from 19 to 78 years.

Games are played at 5pm on Saturdays at Loder park, Atherton. Contact Atherton Hockey or just turn up on the day. Fees are competitive and weekly payment is available.

Roosters close loss against table leaders A better second half effort from the Atherton Roosters wasn’t enough to save the points in Saturday’s Cairns District Rugby League premiership match against the Mossman Sharks at the Mossman Showground.

In the end the Sharks won over the Roosters 24-20 after leading 18-10 at the break.

Two tries in the opening ten minutes gave Mossman a perfect start and a lead of 8-0.

Outrigger Canoe Club looking to boost numbers

THE Dam Outrigger Canoe Club will be hoping for a strong turn-out this weekend as they host a training camp that will see outrigger clubs from as far as Flying Fish Point attend.

While the training camp is a chance to encourage more people to take up the sport, particularly juniors, it also acts as crucial preparation for those clubs entering a team in the Junior National Titles to be held on the Sunshine Coast from September 27-29.

The Dam Outrigger Canoe Club’s Coach Ralph Seed said

he hopes the training camp this weekend and the incentive of competing on a state and national level will hopefully improve participation numbers on the Tablelands moving forward.

“We have seen an increase in numbers on the Tablelands with our juniors and we’re looking to build on that in the future with events such as this,” he said.

“It is such a great sport that is fantastic for fitness as it engages your upper body.

“In addition, it improves water confidence, teamwork and anyone can participate.

“And what better place to do it than the Tinaroo Dam – it is in a wonderful climate and provides very safe water conditions.”

The training camp will be held this Saturday from 7:3011am.

For anyone interested in joining the Dam Outrigger Club, training sessions are on Monday and Thursday from 5:15-6:15pm and Saturday from 6:30-8am.

Srhoj set to grow football in FNQ THE Srhoj surname is synonymous with football in Far North Queensland, and former Mareeba United Football Club coach Alex Srhoj has further etched the name in FNQ football’s folklore after recently being named the Zone Administrator of FNQ Football.

Srhoj’s resume is an impressive one, with a coaching career that spans multiple decades in the north and experience in administration roles such as the Football Manager for the FNQ Bulls in the former Queensland Soccer League.

Srhoj said being appointed as Zone Administrator was an enormous honour.

“It’s very humbling to be given the opportunity,” he said.

“I think it means a little more being born and bred up here – I’ve had a lot of positive responses and well wishes and I hope I can live up to all the expectations.”

Srhoj said becoming Zone Administrator is a position he always envisioned taking up.

“I actually applied for the position back in 2015; however I was unsuccessful on that occasion,” he said.

“In saying that I still stayed involved with the sport and this time around they approached me and for me it’s about putting my head down and bum up.

“Ultimately my goal for the rest of this year is to finish 2019 on a positive note and try and finish it to a point where the parents and players can’t wait for 2020.”

Srhoj said he will start looking to 2020 once the season finishes with help of the club.

“There’s a lot of smart football brains in the area and hopefully we can put together

“We want to put a system in place that supports the six yearolds right up until the seniors.

Srhoj said he would like to thank his family and partner Aly for providing him with the support to take this step and fulfil his dream of becoming Zone Administrator.

“The level of support I have received is overwhelming,” he

said.

“That’s both from current people involved with football in FNQ and old heads who have been involved with the game for many years – so I am pretty excited and nervous at the same time and hopefully I can tick all the boxes.”

“We are looking forward to Alex taking on what will be a challenging but rewarding role.

Bulls overcome Tigers in defining away game Edge Hill United is running away with the FNQ Football Premiership, but with just three points separating the rest of the teams the race is on to secure a top four finish.

The Mareeba Bulls took one step closer in achieving that on

Saturday night when they took on the Leichhardt Lions and came away with a 4-2 win much to the relief of Coach Perry.

The teams were locked at 1-1 at half time but the sending off of Bronson Koppen and the resulting reshuffle saw the

Bulls go 2-1 behind.

The Bulls rallied and managed to even the score before something magical happened, the bulls found their touch in front of goal in the third quarter and scored three unanswered goals to record, what in the end,

was a comfortable win.

Robert Pendenza picked up a brace while Jamie Carroll converted a penalty and Milan Quintieri made a sold contribution scoring the fourth.

Dean Alterio had a man of the match performance as the

young boys stepped up to contribute to a defining win for the Bulls.

In other games, the injuries and absenteeism throughout the senior ranks caused large scale reshuffle amongst the sides and as a result were unable to

field their normal sides. The Reserves went down 2-0 to the Lions while the youth went down 2-1.
