Glamour, excitement and emotion at Cooktown Races The Cooktown Amateur Turf Club held their annual racing weekend last Saturday. Hundreds turned out to enjoy a great day of country racing at the second oldest turf club in Queensland. It was an emotive day on and off the track for a variety of reasons. Pictured are Tiahna Caltabiano, Kymberlee Cockrem and Jessica Miller who travelled to Cooktown and took part in the ‘Visting Ladies’ section of ‘Fashions on the Field’. TAFF members from the Tablelands Regional Council have achieved state success in the Local Government Managers Australia ‘2015 Queensland Rural Management Challenge’, which was recently held in Innisfail. While councillors at the TRC continue to polarise ratepayer discussion throughout the community, there is little discussion required in terms of staff quality within the council; they are exceptional. Chris Dando, Carah Taylor, Chris Marsh and Dalitta Wright joined their mentor Dean David-
son (TRC GM – Community and Regional Planning) in completing a series of challenges relating to local government. At last Thursday morning’s meeting, the team were formally acknowledged by the councillors in attendance; and outlined how they achieved their success. For the several ratepayers in the gallery, it was a refreshing glimpse to see their local council recognised for a positive reason. Mr Davidson was naturally proud of the team and outlined the three phases that were required for successful completion. The first task was completed in the months
leading up to the event, where the team addressed several key criteria in terms of functioning as a competent team. Secondly, the team was required to attend the conference and complete 10 simulated challenges that typically could arise in local government. And finally, the team receive feedback and guidance from their experience and are to work with Mr Davidson and TRC CEO Ian Church on how they can maximise re-integrating themselves back into working life. “The team did exceptionally well and achieved an above average score,” Mr Davidson said. “As a mentor, I thoroughly enjoyed working with the
team. “And even though they were up against some councils three or four times their size – they achieved their goal of taking out the top prize.” He added: “They worked through a number of simulated situations and tested their problem solving skills.” Mr Dando said the simulated problems were extremely relevant to life at the TRC and the council would benefit from the experience. Additionally, Mr Marsh placed importance on the pre-task component of the challenge.

The team... Mareeba State High School students Jessica Heggie and Sam Harris.
SEVERAL students from Mareeba State High School continue to raise the bar in mathematics, reaffirming the school’s balanced excellence for both academics and sport. Two students in particular – Jessica Heggie and Sam Harris (pictured) – achieved exceptionally well, after utilising a wealth of experience gained over several years. Heggie, currently in Year 10, received a high distinction in both the Australian Mathematics Competition and the University of New South Wales’ ICAS competition. Jessica said she finds the components of mathematics ‘fun’ (and at times easy) – along with enjoying the definitive nature of answers derived from equations. Naturally, she is keen to always progress and further her mathematical knowledge; opting to do extra work for an added challenge. “I remember in Year 6, we had an extension booklet,” she said. “If we finished our work early, we would go into work from the booklet.” Early next month, Jessica will head to Canberra and participate in ‘Curious Mind’ program, which is designed to mentor fe-
male academic students and fuel their passion for science, mathematics or engineering. For Harris, his final year of senior schooling has been a memorable one. A gifted science student, he also received high distinctions in both maths catagories. Additionally, he received a prize for his performance in the Australian Mathematics Competition – finishing in the top one percent of the country for his age. “The questions start off very easy, then they get harder and harder,” he said. “It’s (the competition) got a very varied way of working out where you are on the scale.” Harris received 22 out of 30 for the AMC, which placed him in the top one percent – the average mark during the competition was 11 out of 30. Questions in the competition ranged from trigonometry, statistics and advanced algebra. Harris added that by extensively covering the material in the competitions, it held him in good stead for equations in the Queensland Core Skills test. “I make sure I read the question and understand all the information they have given me,” he said. “I find it easy to write it all down in front of me and then visualise it in my head as to how it all goes together.”

she hoped that they would all return in the new school year. Mrs Whybird added that both MSS and Mareeba State High School would be receiving a visit from a New Mexicobased (US) official in coming months, in order for both schools to maximise and improve community engagement within the town.

Celebrating the survivors By Justin Fris ATHERTON hosted the 2015 Tablelands Relay for Life last weekend, in which participants young and old united in support of those impacted by cancer. Over 18 hours, a solid medley of both fitting tributes and entertainment were taken in by those who openly showed their support. The grey skies were merely a footnote – as passion and hope shine through regardless of the weather. Festivities began with a special lap by several cancer survivors, who received a standing ovation from the crowd. Coupled with this, team participants began their various components of the relay – dressed up in various costumes as they churned out miles and miles on foot in a bid to raise funds for cancer research and patient support. Tablelands Regional Coun-
cil’s Deputy Mayor Geoff Stocker – who was the official ambassador of the event – said the support on the day was extremely welcomed by all concerned. “In the name of all ‘Relay for Life’ participants, I confirm that we are here to celebrate the lives of cancer survivors,” he said. “To support those fighting cancer and to honour those we have lost. Our commitment will be symbolised in every step we take. Each and every one – moving us closer to our goal – the goal of a cancer-free world.” Tablelands Relay for Life event organiser Gavin Johnson said 21 teams had signed up for the event and was excited about seeing such a broad range of participants getting behind the event. “We’ve had a good three days setting up (for the event) and it’s all gone well,” he said. “So far, we’ve had over $38,000 raised – with obviously a lot more to come in; it’s absolutely fantastic.”
TRC Deputy Mayor Geoff Stocker was the official ambassador for last weekend’s ‘Tablelands Relay for Life’.

From Page 1 He believed the pre-planning gave them a solid indication on how the challenge would go. Ms Wright’s address to councillors was noticeably passionate – taking pride in the qualities that the team displayed amongst each other. It was telling, in more ways than one. “The positive outcomes from this experience are all part of trying to achieve a better future for the TRC,” she said. “We had a boost in our confidence – through both our work and home life. We reinvigorated our own attitudes toward our work and we also had an increased understanding in our own abilities.” She added: “Despite working with several other councils, we worked out that we share a lot of similar issues. “I’d like to delve significantly deeper into the TRC’s corporate values and work on the behaviour statements behind those values. “I want to see our staff living the values, respecting and caring for each other – along with delivering key services collaboratively and working for our ratepayers.” Once the team had been presented, all councillors in attendance had an opportunity to respond with their thoughts. public record and should remain fresh in the mind in the event of an opposite reality. TRC Mayor Rosa Lee Long said: “We always strive to improve and after all with deamalgamation, things are just starting to settle down. “I certainly recognise that we have some very quality people on our staff. Lots of personalities come into play in a Council and you have to learn to work with different people. “There are a lot of staff across different departments who have to learn to work together and communicate – and we are still in the process of perfecting all that. We are not worse than any other council and we are trying to improve our communication.” Cr Geoff Stocker said: “I think that this team building does a lot to bring people together and provide an efficient council.” Cr Shaaron Linwood said: “I’m so incred-
ibly proud of you. I’ve known what you can do and you have proved it. “I think it is really up to this council to work harder in the future and we need to be open – use the things that you can do to make us a better workplace; and something the Tablelands region can be proud of.” Cr’s Hodge and Marti echoed the statements and praise from the above parties. For many, the words delivered by both the Mayor and councillors should be comforting. They appear to acknowledge the importance of team work and significance of communication. Over the last year, these traits have been virtually non-existent, by way of routine block voting and petty squabbles. With Tablelands Regional Council staff setting the bar high, it is now time for the councillors to deliver; by turning their own words into action.

Boost to local economy By Carl Portella The Mareeba Shire Council has confirmed 40,000 square meters of property (as two parcels of freehold land) have been sold at the Mareeba Industrial Park. A residual debt of $621,000 will be retired as a result of the sale, while the balance of the funds will be used to develop the next stage of the facility.
The council considered the proposal put forward by the developers (who wished to remain anonymous) with the price of $36 per square meter (plus GST) asked to be accepted for the land. This comes as an enormous boost to MSC, as the Industrial Park was a much talked about asset at the last local government elections at the end of 2013. The development (Mareeba Industrial Park) has come under some scrutiny in re-
cent times in terms of lacking growth needed to attract further investment in the region. Mayor Tom Gilmore sees the Industrial Park as one of the MSC’s greatest assets with the potential to infuse millions into the shire’s economy. Mr Gilmore said: “This is a major step forward for the shire and I would like to commend all the council staff that were involved in the negotiations and the ultimate sale of the property.”

By Justin Fris WITH an aging population across the Tablelands, available health and paramedic services in many cases can be a difference between life and death. Several local stakeholders on the southern Tablelands are ramping up their interest in having a greater ambulance presence (through both permanent officer and ambulance) in the township of Herberton. Member for Dalrymple Shane Knuth took the matter to state parliament last week, and asked a question (on notice) to Palaszczuk Government Health Minister, Cameron Dick. Mr Knuth’s question was based around the Palaszczuk Government’s healthcare commitment to the region – and when it could be potentially rolled out. “It’s all about ensuring safety,” Mr Knuth said. “Along with residents having quick and safe access to health and paramedic care. “In some cases, it can be a matter of life and death.” Tablelands regional division two councillor Shaaron Linwood said she had been working closely with local residents and had met with Mr Knuth on the issue. “Once we have more information, the plan is to hold a town meeting to fully inform the community on progress so far,” she said. “There are clear benefits to having an officer stationed in Herberton, particularly in regards to emergency calls to the likes of the Irvinebank, Watsonville and Walsh communities.” Cr Linwood added: “The TRC has a strong place to play in lobbying the relevant Government department and I would be very disappointed if my fellow councillors did not see the value of the proposal and give their full support.” Several members of the Herberton community have been busy gauging support on the matter via social media. ‘Herberton Community Awareness Group’ committee member Judy Nickson has been one of the major players in driving change and said the feedback received from locals had been particularly positive. “Herberton roughly had 250 ambulance over the last year,” she said. “In some cases, people have waited an hour for an ambulance to arrive – although this is not the fault of those in Atherton as they do a great job.”

Mareeba Shire Council adopted its draft Annual Report for the 2014-15 financial year. “The Local Government Regulation 2012 requires that each local government must prepare an annual report for each financial year,” Mayor Tom Gilmore said. “The draft Annual Report is the first opportunity for me as Mayor to report on a full financial year; and those activities that have made this financial year and exciting and productive time in the development of our new shire,” Cr Gilmore said. Additionally, the MSC has completed a series of maintenance on several parks, gardens and bridges within the region over the last few months. “Parks and Gardens have carried out general repairs and maintenance at the Town Hall Park - Dimbulah, Parks and Gardens, Chillagoe, Old Kuranda Depot/Ampitheartre, Kuranda, Basalt Gully and Centenary Park, Mareeba,” Cr Gilmore added. “General repairs and maintenance has also been carried out on furniture and playground equipment.” In acknowledgement of Remembrance Day (Wednesday, November 11) the MSC and Mareeba RSL subbranch will also co-ordinate a march and ceremony from 10.30am outside the Mareeba RSL. All are welcome.

PRINCIPALS WORDS With only a week left for our Year 12s, it is an exciting and challenging transition. Schools provide a great springboard into life and now it is the time for each student to fly. In a challenging world, the onus will be on each student to prove how worthy they are to get the position they desire. Mareeba State High School is very proud of our students. The quality of education and extra-curricular activities they have received give them every opportunity to be successful. We hope you will all become valuable members of society, both here in the Mareeba community and further afield. It will now be up to our Year 11 students who will take on the reins as leaders of our school. They will hold the traditions and innovations for the 2016 year. Their culminating camp in the last week of school is a highlight and will allow them to develop the teamwork needed to be successful. Our best wishes go to each and every student for the future. I hope you have a safe and successful transition into the real world. Sot W r Principal

Imparting wisdom at international conference
15 years of guiding
By Justin Fris
By Julie Henderson and Justin Fris
LOCAL financial planner Ross Cardillo (Ross Cardillo Financial Services) has recently returned from Capstone Financial Planning’s annual international conference, which was held in Cardiff, Wales. Attended by internationally acclaimed experts throughout the financial planning industry, Mr Cardillo was one of several presenters at the conference – focussing on the importance of customer service and client retention. Naturally, such an experience provides information and knowledge that can be passed on to many within the Mareeba and Tablelands region. “One of the key experiences during the conference for us was experiencing what financial planning is like in the United Kingdom,” Mr Cardillo said. “In Australia, we have these blurred lines between bank advisors and independent financial advisors. “Unfortunately, because I believe the banks place that much pressure on various governments and financial stakehold-
FROM 1940, the Mareeba Girl Guides have played a pivotal part in the local community – and long may it continue. The Girl Guides initially began on the verandah at Mareeba State School, with a sole cupboard for storage. When WWII broke out, the guides temporarily relocated to Egan Street; as MSS was converted into a temporary hospital. Over several decades, many changes have occurred. Many of these wouldn’t have been possible, if not for the support from the Mareeba Shire Council, Mareeba Rotary, Mareeba Lions, Apex and Jaycee’s Clubs, they would not have maintained their presence. Seeing the Mareeba Girl Guides hut today, it is evident that considerable labour, money and effort has been put into the facility. Additionally, the Mareeba Girl Guides have received significant state recognition over many, many, years. In 1998, for example, one of their members was the first brownie to be presented with a Junior BP award. Other awards include having 20 Junior BP award recipients since 1998, and 14 BP awards since 1998.
ers, advisors like me aren’t able to say outright: ‘I’m independent’ – even though we are.” He added: “However, over in the UK, there is a very clear division. There are bank advisors – who sell products on behalf of the bank – or, you are an independent financial advisor, who works for your client and works with strategies and contracts.” Mr Cardillo – who is extremely passionate about quality customer service with his clients – said his presentation topic was very important to convey to the audience. “Good service, no matter what industry you are in, means that you will always grow and retain your customer base,” he said.
The Girl Guides facility in Mareeba.
The Mareeba Girl Guides would like to thank our leaders, support groups, and all girl guide members and their families (past and present). We’re only small, but we have come a long way. From a low standing – to a high raise, with plenty of room for girl’s activities. Over the years, we have had many girls come and go, with several girls gaining awards and in turn: “enabling girls and young women to grow into confident, self-respecting, responsible community leaders”.

Electoral Boundaries There has been no increase in the number of Members of Parliament for 20 years, yet Queensland’s population has risen by about two million. There are five major rural and remote seats in Queensland - the LNP hold two, the Katter party hold two and Billy Gordon holds Cook. These seats do not have the pre-requisite numbers of voters and are weighted to make sure the bush is represented in Parliament. There is an electoral boundary redistribution due next year, which can only mean at least one of the five bush seats will disap-

pear, as they are melded into four to match the population quota. For Cook, the only way to increase the numbers to meet the quota is to include either the northern beaches, Kuranda or part of the southern Tablelands. The Electoral (Redistribution Commission) and Another Amendment Act Bill 2015 would have ensured the bush did not lose any seats in the upcoming redistribution. What the Member for Cook didn’t consider when he blindly supported his Labor masters in defeating this Bill, is that the indigenous population of Cook hold about 50 per cent of the vote at present; and this can only diminish under a redistribution.
It’s about time the Member for Cook stopped playing power broker and got down to representing the best interests of the people who voted for him. David Kempton, Former Member for Cook

‘We’re on our way to Mareeba’ By Justin Fris THE North Queensland Aero Club (NQAC) has currently completed 65 per cent of their relocation operation from Cairns to the Mareeba Airport – and they want you to know that they are on their way. NQAC President Scott Brady said there were a number of factors behind the club’s move to the Mareeba airport; with the membership base in favour of the decision. The club offers several unique flight training options for the general public – which covers both general aviation and recreational flying. “It’s a very busy time for us,” he said. “It’s the biggest move the aero club has ever seen in its history. “Our members have been volunteering their time and skill to help get us to where we are right now, with our deadline December 12 – in terms of relocating from Cairns to Mareeba.” Mr Brady said both costs and increased commercial traffic had both played a part in the club’s decision to relocate. “Increased costs are one of the major factors,” he said. “It’s becoming quite prohibitive down there (Cairns) – apart from that, the increase of commercial traffic is restricting the amount of activity we can do. “It’s a much quieter environment up here for people learning to fly and it’s easier for them to concentrate on learning to fly rather than having to deal with interference from commercial traffic.”
Gareth Henry (Grade 2 Flying Instructor) and Scott Brady (NQAC President) are excited about their club’s relocation from Cairns to Mareeba.
The Mareeba airport has been a hub of activity in the last two years, with the Mareeba Shire Council working with both former Member for Cook David Kempton and the Palaszczuk Government to ensure the facility received a sizable financial investment. Mr Brady said that the club had formed a really good relationship with the MSC and that they will support them in whichever way possible to maximise operations at the airport. In the lead up to December 12 deadline, the club is finalising its facilities and preparation ahead of several exciting events for the general public to enjoy. “We are required to get our facilities signed off by CASA (Civil Aviation Safety Authority), to be our major operating base,” he said. “It’s things like ensuring we’ve got air conditioned rooms for our students when they are learning and making our disabled access and toilets are up to scratch.” The NQAC is an inclusive flight training club for all ages and abilities. They will be hosting an ‘Open Day’ on November 28 and encourage those living throughout the Tablelands to come down and have a look at their new operational facility. If you are passionate about flying or would like more information, contact the NQAC on 4035 9438.

Mareeba Heritage Centre POST OFFICE
A town came into being at the Granite Creek stopover, halfway between Port Douglas and Herberton Tin Fields. Early surveys name this “Town of Granite Creek”. This name was changed in 1892 to Mareeba. The first Post Office was located at the railway station in 1893 when rail reached Mareeba. Laurence Courtney was both Station Master and Post Master. Town population 1000. Around 1898, two Customs Office buildings were relocated from Port Douglas to Mareeba and this became the first stand alone Post Office. In 1901 this structure was re-built. D McLeod was the Post Master with two staff. In 1911 the Manual Telephone Exchange opened in the Post Office. G Wiggles was the Post Master with three assistants. Town population was 1400. 1933 saw the first mail delivery. 1936 electricity was connected and by 1953 there were 287 telephone connections in the town. In 1965, Mareeba’s Trunk Line and Telephone Excange building was opened. In 1975 telephones were completely automated and the “Hello” girls were no longer required.

The LAND Ken Ohnell with Case IH Product Manager, Pete McCann. Both men are optimistic about the added regional employment.
More jobs in the field AGRICULTURAL powerhouse Case IH has furthered its commitment to the industry, after enhancing its employment numbers across regional Australia. With further regional employment opportunities, it appears that both customers and services will gain significantly. Case IH brand manager Bruce Healy said customer feedback was significantly important – and the new positions would be able to focus
on smaller regional communities. “So much of what we do at Case IH is based on customer feedback,” he said. “Whether it’s the design of the Multifunction handle, or the fact that we’ve put a removable fridge into our Axial-Flow combine cabs, listening to our customers helps make our machinery great. “With extra feet on the ground, we’ll have more open feedback and be able to better sup-

Mareeba-conductor to perform at festival By Justin Fris
MAREEBA’s own Glen Fourmile will play an integral part in the upcoming ‘Yarrabah Band Festival’ which will be held on Saturday evening at Bishop Malcolm Park. Fourmile – a musical conductor – will be heavily involved on the night, which will begin at 5pm. It is both alcohol and cost free. Mr Fourmile said the event was very significant for the Yarrabah community, with many out of town performers making the journey inland. “It’s important for Yarrabah to hold event like these as it strengthen community connectedness and reinforce resilience,” he said. “It helps to bridge the gap between Yarrabah and the outside world and gives the community an opportunity to share.” Mr Fourmile grew up in Mareeba
What’s on at the Rising Sun Cinema
and has always had a healthy passion for music. Additionally, he believes there is a solid connection between indigenous culture and music, due to its ability to tell stories. “My passion came from my family - from my father and brothers and sister - to my grandfather who was a member of the last brass band in Yarrabah,” he said. “My Grandfather brought me my first instrument (a saxophone). I also had uncles who were musically gifted; one of which got me to join his band and travel around the state.” The festival has been created in a bid to revitalise the Yarrabah Brass Band, which used to be at the forefront of positive engagement for the community. My expectations are that everyone will come and enjoy themselves and I expect the artists to have fun,” he said.
Daniel Craig, Christoph Waltz, Ralph Fiennes and an all star cast are all in the high octane SPECTRE. The latest James Bond movie that hits the Rising Sun screen this week. This could well be the biggest Bond ever, as it has just shattered all records in its recent British opening, including biggest opening weekend of all time. THE DRESSMAKER, with an absolutely superb performance by Kate Winslett continues for a third great and final week, while Anne Hathaway and Robert De Niro are excellent in the lovely comedy THE INTERN, which shows for the last time today Wednesday.
SPECTRE
A cryptic message from the past sends James Bond on a rogue mission to Mexico City and eventually Rome, where he meets Lucia, the beautiful and forbidden widow of an infamous criminal. Bond infiltrates a secret meeting and uncovers the existence of the sinister organisation known as SPECTRE. Meanwhile back in London, Max Denbigh, the new head of the Centre of National Security, questions Bond's actions and challenges the relevance of MI6 led by M. Bond covertly enlists Moneypenny and Q to help him seek out Madeleine Swann, the daughter of his old nemesis Mr White, who may hold the clue to untangling the web of SPEC-

TRE. As the daughter of the assassin, she understands Bond in a way most others cannot. As Bond ventures towards the heart of SPECTRE, he learns a chilling connection between himself and the enemy he seeks.
THE INTERN
70-year-old widower Ben Whittaker (Robert De Niro) has discovered that retirement isn't all it's cracked up to be. Seizing an opportunity to get back in the game, he becomes a senior intern at an online fashion site, founded and run by Jules Ostin (Anne Hathaway).
THE DRESSMAKER
Now a glamorous young woman, Tilly (Kate Winslet) returns to her small town in rural Australia some years after having been sent away as a child under traumatic circumstances. With her sewing machine and haute couture style, she transforms the women and exacts sweet revenge on those who did her wrong.

WORTH A LOOk... COME IN ANd SAY HI!!
Kylie, Sam, Jackson and Ben Fahlstrom welcome you to the ‘Hungry Horse’ cafe.
AFTER only having sat down with Ben and Kylie Fahlstrom for five minutes, something stood out straight away. Not only were the owners of the ‘Hungry Horse’ cafe wonderful and down to earth, the quality and quantity of their food was exceptional. After spending two decades in the construction industry, Ben yearned for a better work/life balance. He has found his paradise within the Tolga industrial estate, just a stone’s throw from the Kennedy Highway. With wife Kylie and their two children Jackson (age 10) and Sam (age 6), they relocated back to Atherton for a life on the land – with Ben able to exhibit his dedication to preparing and serving a quality finished product. “We’re getting really good feedback from our customers,” Kylie said. “All of our ingredients are local produce. We try and do as much locally as we can.” Both Ben and Kylie are also heavily involved with the Atherton Roosters Junior Rugby League and have a real passion for being involved in community events. “We do the kitchen on the weekends for the junior league,” they said.
“It’s all about giving something back to the local community.” The most you will need to pay for an item on the menu is $12, which will provide you with a ‘Big Breakfast’ or hearty feed of crumbed steak and gravy (with or without salad). Customers who frequent the ‘Hungry Horse’ are diverse and attend on a regular basis. Ben prides himself on effective and quick service for each order – but refuses to cut corners on quality. Open five days a week (Monday to Friday) between 8am and 3pm, Ben and Kylie offer a quality food experience in a comfortable and relaxed environment. Ben and Kylie are also planning to additionally commence a mobile food service for the Atherton Township, so make sure you keep your eye out for it over the coming months. So if your tummy is rumbling, ‘Hungry Horse’ is the ultimate refuel. The ‘Hungry Horse’ also has several lunch catering options available for businesses that may be planning upcoming functions. Devilishly good defence seals premiership
The Red Devils celebrate after finally securing a seemingly elusive premiership. By Justin Fris
THE Red Devils were finally able to write their names in Mareeba Basketball League folklore last Thursday evening. After several seasons of tasting defeat at the final hurdle, the Devils finally ditched their unwanted hoodoo with a 46-36 victory over Hot Air. In many cases, the game provided a taste of something old and something new. Chris Shephard’s swangsong in Mareeba did not disappoint, with the emergence of youngsters Brandon and Layton Osborne equally impressive. Hot Air were far from disgraced during their display; and if they can stay together in coming seasons, they should once again challenge for a title. A US-inspired opening to the match (court announcing and large crowd) brought the Mareeba PCYC Sports Hall to its feet.
Hot Air fared better from the off, racing out to an early 6-0 lead – with Luke Libke draining two deep three pointers. After momentarily seeming a little shocked, the Devils were able to regroup themselves and got back into the game. By playing conservative ball (going 4/6 from the field), they were able to regain back the lead before the end of the quarter, finishing with a 12-3 scoring run. With a slender lead in their possession, the Devils were starved of quality ball early in the second quarter. Hot Air were extremely firm on offence during this period – in a sense of attacking aggressively, but not in a dangerous manner. Their defence was also able to nullify Clinton Cameron, who was unable to utilise the full range of his talents under the bucket. At the half, there was an optimistic hum in

the crowd. As the smell of delicious hamburgers wafted their way delicately throughout the hall, people eagerly discussed who they thought may be the difference. In many sports, the third quarter is often deemed ‘the premiership quarter’. And yet again, it came to pass. Although this time, the source didn’t come in single form. It came by the way of two teenage brothers - Brandon and Layton Osborne. In a whirlwind spell which turned the game on its head, the Devils were able to break the game open in a clinical four minute burst. Their offence was quick and it was often. It saw seasoned defenders retreating. It also ensured a 34-21 advantage going into the final quarter. Both huddles told a story as they came together for the final time. In the Hot Air camp, David Hawke and Jimmy Ballin reaffirmed teammates what was required; while the Red Devils players
were keeping a lid on their advantage. Having been denied premiership glory for several years, it came as no surprise that the Red Devils dug their heels in and solidified their lead for the remainder of the game. However it must be said - that even during the final few minutes – sportsmanship and integrity from both teams never departed from the court. Upon the final buzzer, both sides congratulated each other on a hard fought contest – with the Devils finally putting a pitchfork into their unwanted premiership drought. At the midway point of the season, they were struggling to win; and it may have been viewed from the outside that their premiership window had indeed closed. However good sides have great heart and character – and the Devils’ dedication and commitment to excellence has been nothing short of exceptional this season.

Serial Killers toil in grand final win over Gummaz By Justin Fris
AFTER an impressive regular season, many considered the Serial Killers hot favourites to win their Mareeba Basketball League Ladies A grade final last Thursday evening. Opposed to the Gummaz – a perennial grand finalist with an indifferent season – it seemed a case of: Serial Killers to win – only question, by how much? But grand finals can be tricky occasions, with the Serial Killers eventually holding off their persistent opponents 37-33. The victory was anything but comfortable. Serial Killers defenders often had to work double
time in their bid to save the game. Christine Leet dominated the early stages of the game, with the Serial Killers significantly more transparent on offence. In contrast, the Gummaz were extremely stagnate and spent large portions of the quarter catching their breath. Leading 16-5 after the first break, it was expected that the Gummaz – who only had four players – would simply fall by the wayside. Instead, it only appeared to galvanise their ambitions and hope. Despite their unconventional build up, the Gummaz would go 6/7 from the field and trim the margin to four points. Noticeably, two things stood out. The Serial

Killers were opting for a lofted passing game, which was routinely intercepted. It was puzzling for many as to why they didn’t quell this trend earlier in the game. The Gummaz routinely opted for a ‘seagull’ offensive play, where they would permanently situated a player under the basket and simply heave it to them to catch the defence off guard. Deidre Brumby appeared to be the major thorn in the Killers’ side, with her offensive speed keeping the match close. At times, the Serial Killers looked bemused at the situation they were finding themselves in. Having only lost one game all year, it was clearly awhile since they had to dig in and grind out a
victory. With a large crowd cheering them on, the Gummaz would make one final push for victory, but poor shooting would spell an end to their hopes. After a stellar season, the Serial Killers were naturally relieved to win the grand final. It will be interesting to see in future seasons if they can build on this dominance. For the Gummaz, it was again defeat in a grand final. Poor shooting and a lack of fitness appear to be the two areas they need to address in order to win on the grandest stage of all. In the Ladies B grade final, Mmama wer victorious over the Miakats.

Magical moment for the Massingham family COOKTOWN put its finest foot forward last Saturday, with all the fun and fashion of country racing coming to the fore. Punters were treated to a seven race card, while many ladies in attendance preferred to concentrate their attention to ‘Fashions on the Field’. But above all, the day was extremely emotional for the Massingham family. Decorated Cairns-based trainer Wayne Massingham tragically passed away last week, with one of his runners primed for a solid showing. Survived by his son Steve and several other loving family members, Wayne’s runner Making Headlines took home the fourth race on the programme – along with two of Steve’s runners also
finishing up with victories. A day after the enormity of the afternoon, Steve said it was ‘a great day’ with his family and said he was ‘hopeful’ pre-race that his father’s runner would perform well. “We were all really hoping to be honest,” he said. “Cooktown is a real tight turning track and the crowd is very close. “The Cooktown Amateur Turf Club has been really good to us and it was really a great day; everyone is so friendly and always say hello.” Steve and his father were renowned for travelling together for hours on end to participate in races on the country circuit. “He loved meeting people throughout the industry – he’d love to tell a good yarn and have a
beer with anybody.” Race results from the day were as follows: Race 1 (Archer River Roadhouse Maiden -1000m) honours went to Ahotone, which is trained by Dean Piccolo. Other placegetters (2nd and 3rd) were Changeinthefortune and I’m Rurrbellious. Race 2 (Bramwell Station BM50 – 1000m) honours went to La Jenita, which is also trained by Dean Piccolo. Other placegetters were Frenchenka and Boom Box. Race 3 (Tyrepower Cooktown Bracelet BM65-1000m) honours went to lsador Amore, trained by F.J Wieland. Other placegetters were Rose of Clare and Besieged. Race 4 (Cooktown Hardware Handicap (C1)-
1000m) honours went to Making Headlines. Other placegetters were Venceremos and Racing in the Wind. Race 5 (Lions Den Hotel Handicap-1290m) honours went to King Magnussen, which is trained by Steve Massingham. Other placegetters were Canhedance and Boom Sha La. Race 6 (Brackenhurst Contracting (C3)1400m) honours went to I’m Mariah, which is also trained by Steve Massingham. Other placegetters were Rise to the Top and Air of Heaven. Race 7 (Cooktown Cup BM70 – 1700m) honours went to Gundy Star, which is trained by Sharlee Hoffman. Despite the hot weather, the crowd were vocal throughout the day and thoroughly enjoyed it all.

Inclusive swimming sign on this Sunday By Justin Fris
YOU are never too old to swim – and the several adults who are part of the Mareeba Masters Swimming Club are a testament to this. In line with ‘World Diabetes Day’ this Sunday, the club will be holding its ‘Annual Sign-On’ in the morning from 9am at the Mareeba Swimming Pool. Tanya Barker, Nursing Unit Manager at Mareeba Hospital and owner of essential fitness will be present to talk about diabetes. Under the guidance of local coaching icon June Cotter, members are able to work on stroke technique, keep active and enjoy themselves in a relaxed setting. Squad member Joanne Geary en-

couraged locals to come along and participate in the festivities, with the classes running over the summer months. As an added incentive, June said that for all who quoted ‘The Express Newspaper’ upon arrival, they would receive a special offer. “For everyone who quotes this article, they will receive eight free classes – and will only need to pay pool entry,” she said. Those keen to attend only need to bring their bathers (togs) as all other equipment will be provided. If you would like to learn more about participating in swimming, please contact the Mareeba Swimming Club on 4092 1691.

THE Port Douglas Muddies returned home with a valuable five wicket victory over the Mareeba Bandits in their one day fixture at Kerribee Park last Sunday. After the hosts were dismissed for only 112, the visitors managed to chase down the target with three and a half overs to spare, finishing on 5/113. On a scorching hot afternoon for cricket, the hosts won the toss and elected to bat. Brendan Payne’s men began well, scoring at four runs in over. After reaching 1/23 off the opening five overs - disaster struck for the hosts instantly - who lost two wickets in two deliveries next over, with Turner and Payne depart-
ing. At the other end, Robert Taylor was in particularly good form, especially between the wickets. He would put together a tidy 30 off 29 balls, before he too would find himself out. The visitors began to turn the screws, with Keel Sorensen the chief destroyer. In a blistering six over spell, the youngster snared 5/7. A target of 112 didn’t look to be enough on a quality wicket and the home side struggled to keep the plucky visitors off their task - despite Adam Roy and Andrew Lamborn bowling well. The Bandits will now face Mission Beach in the two day form of the game, which is at home this Sunday.
