Local pub set to reopen LOCALS can rejoice after the Mt Molloy National Hotel announced it’s planning on reopening its doors and bringing the community back together again.

The pub, which has still be operating under limited takeaway restrictions, is set to reopen its doors and offer more after the

easing of stage two restrictions came into effect.

After closing the doors on March 23, the Mt Molloy Hotel has been completely inundated with takeaway orders from their kitchen and alcohol orders from their regular patrons.

In preparation for their reopening, local jobs are now

on offer with the pub currently looking to hire more staff.

The positions on offer include bar staff, kitchen hands, a casual cook and owner Shane McElligott is looking to spread his own workload by hiring a bus driver.

After the pub had to shut its doors, some staff members found

permanent work elsewhere and cannot return.

Mr McElligott said he is excited for the pub to reopen and is looking forward to seeing his regulars walk through the doors again.

“It feels great to have everyone showing their support while the doors were closed, it

shows that we are doing a good job,” he said.

“It’s a great meeting place for people around the area to come have a feed and some beers with their mates.

“It’s a great family environment and I really push that, we treat people how we want to be treated.”

Tablelands – are you open?

AS restrictions lift across the state and Queensland open for Queenslanders, Tropical Tablelands Tourism (TTT) is gearing up to start promoting the region to the rest of Queensland.

As the local tourism organisation for the Atherton Tablelands, TTT is calling for operators to register their business as open or planning to reopen in the coming weeks as travel restrictions begin to ease.

Chairman Eddy Nye said

“Tropical Tablelands Tourism continues to receive daily enquiries from potential visitors, travel trade and media, wanting updates on what is happening in our beautiful Atherton Tablelands region,” he said.

“This is a positive step in the region’s recovery, but we need to hear from the community who is open or who is planning to open in the future.”

Mr Nye says all businesses are welcome to register.

“There is not a single business on the Atherton Tablelands that does not benefit directly or indirectly from tourism. We welcome visitors back and are happy to promote any business that is open in these very challenging times.”

Atherton Tablelands Promotion Bureau Limited, (trading as Tropical Tablelands Tourism) was established in 1986 for destination marketing. TTT works with Mareeba Shire Council

and Tablelands Regional Council to drive visitation to the region.

“Our key marketing tools are the Atherton Tablelands Visitors Guide and via social media and the website www. athertontablelands.com.au,” Mr Nye said.

“TTT does not market in the region because the visitors are already here. Our focus is on bringing the visitors here.”

According to TTT their web-

site averages 11,000 hits per month, their Facebook page has 22K followers and Instagram is up to 11K followers.

Council CEO resigns TABLELANDS Regional Council has a new interim Chief Executive Officer following the surprise resignation of Justin Commons last week.

Mayor Rod Marti made the shock announcement at last Thursday’s monthly Council meeting that CEO Justin Commons had tendered his resignation on Wednesday afternoon (May 27), effective immediately.

At the meeting, council resolved to accept Mr Commons departure, but the resignation did take some councillors by surprise.

Councillors Dave Bilney and Annette Haydon, who both worked with Mr Common’s during the previous council under Mayor Joe Paronella, voted against accepting his resignation.

In a statement read out at the meeting, Councillor Bilney said, “It is a strong sense of disappointment, the announcement of CEO Justin Common’s resignation. I accept change is needed which I consider should be undertaken in a measured, controlled and informed manner. In my mind, Justin has been a hardworking supportive and loyal officer and his departure will be a sustainable loss to this organisation and the community at large.”

Cr Haydon didn’t want to comment at the time saying she was “quite upset.”

Instead issuing a written statement saying, “I am disappointed Justin is leaving the organisation. I appreciate his efforts in lifting the organisation's

deficiencies. He has always had staffs best interest at heart. He attended and supported many town meetings, functions and community events as he was passionate about the broader area.”

Following Thursday’s announcement Mayor Rod Marti thanked Mr Commons for his hard work since appointed in May 2018.

“In the short time I’ve known Justin, he proved himself to be a professional and extremely hard working. And for councillors Bilney and Haydon who worked with him in the previous council, they held him in very high regard.”

No reason was given for the sudden resignation, but part of Mayor Rod Marti’s election campaign was to remove power from council officers and return it to councillors.

Council has appointed Bob Owen to the top job as interim CEO for at least 12 months. Mr Owen was TRC’s General Manager of Community Planning and Environment prior to Thursday’s announcement.

Following Mr Owen’s appointment, Mayor Rod Marti said the Council was clearly on a new path since the election two months ago, and this leadership change re-affirmed this commitment.

“To be able to transition quickly from Mr Commons to Mr Owen has been a blessing,” said Mayor Marti.

“Mr Owen brings a wealth of local government experience, having served as a Councillor

“The changing direction of any Council is a difficult task, but the new Council had made good progress in a short time.

“Our biggest priority now is to work through the challenges of COVID-19 to put together our budget.

‘It’s certainly a finer balancing act than normal,’ said Mayor Marti.

FROM this week, Queenslanders will be able to enjoy unrestricted travel throughout the state including overnight stays Premier Annastacia Palaszczuk said the easing of intrastate travel restrictions – by road, rail and air within Queensland – would come well in time for the next school holidays and would significantly kick-start the state’s tourism.

“From the Gold Coast to Brisbane to the Sunshine Coast to Gympie to Maryborough to Bundaberg, from Longreach to Mt Isa, to Rockhampton, Mackay, Townsville and Cairns, Queenslanders will now be able to rediscover their state, travelling for as many nights as they like,” said the Premier.

It will also be a move welcomed by the airline industry, with intra-state flights set to resume.

“This will go a long way toward giving our critical tourism industry a welcome boost after adhering to the necessary restrictions we were forced to impose and I encourage Queenslanders to take advantage of the easing of rules around intrastate travel.”

The other major change is the number of patrons allowed into venues.

20 people are now allowed to dine-in at restaurants and cafes, to attend gyms, cinemas, libraries, museums, art galleries, and places of worship.

The same rule will apply to bars, but patrons must be seated.

Venues are required to have "COVID-safe" plans in place, and in the majority of cases, these have been submitted by

the sector's peak body.

Deputy Premier and Health Minister Steven said “Restaurants, cafes and pubs that continue to operate under a COVID safe checklist will, from June 1, be permitted to increase the total number of patrons from 10 to 20,” Mr Miles said.

The government also announced that from this Friday, June 5, hospitality venues will be allowed to have 20 people per “section” in their establishment.

This means at a pub with multiple restaurants and rooms, up to 20 people could be accommodated in each room, as long as there are no more than one person per 4 square metres.

“For example, some surf clubs, pubs and RSLs may have four or five defined separate indoor and outdoor areas — they can have 20 people in each of these areas if the areas are big enough,” Deputy Premier and Health Minister Steven Miles said.

“In relation to community sporting events where clubs have more than one field, limits of 20 spectators per field will apply.”

In announcing the changes, Chief Health Officer Dr Jeanette Young reminded people all of the same rules around keeping a 1.5-metre personal distance, washing hands regularly, and staying home if you are sick, apply.

Dr Young said venues were also responsible for keeping the contact details of anyone who attended their premises, should it be needed for contact tracing in the event of an outbreak.

Visitor centre reopens to help reboot Kuranda­

EVEN though it may be an unofficial policy, Mareeba Shire Council is working hard to reboot Kuranda from a tourist town to a town in its own right.

Part of the plan to reinvigorate the town that has been hit hard by the COVID-19 pandemic is the reopening of the Visitors Information Centre (VIC) which closed in late March.

As restrictions begin to ease and businesses in Kuranda begin to start trading again, the Visitor Information Centre will also re-open from Friday, June 12, 2020.

The Centre will initially open three days a week (Friday, Saturday and Sunday) between 10am to 3pm to provide visitor information to local and regional visitors.

Mareeba Shire Council (MSC) Mayor Angela Toppin said she was optimistic about visitors returning to Kuranda following COVID-19.

“I look forward to seeing more visitors explore the wonderful village in the rainforest,” Cr Toppin said.

“The staff at the visitor in-

Another part of MSC’s plan to support Kuranda business operators and to help re-boot the Kuranda Village is that council will now be waiving busking fees for the next three months.

The plan is to get buskers visiting Kuranda to help reboot Kuranda as a fun family destination.

Mayor Angela Toppin said the small fee would be temporarily suspended to encourage buskers to perform in the Village to create a unique atmosphere.

“As Far Northerners start to explore the region, we want to encourage local performers to showcase their talents and add some much-needed street activation in the Village,” Cr Toppin said.

“This is another way that we can help Kuranda re-boot with street activations. If you’ve ever been in Kuranda you will know that busker’s add so much atmosphere.”

Tourism Kuranda disbands after 20 years of marketing DESTINATION marketing of Kuranda by Council through Tourism Kuranda has finished its 20-year long stint. The levy used to support and fund the program was stopped at the recent Mareeba Shire Council (MSC) meeting after the majority of levy payers voted against it’s continuation.

Council established a business unit more than 20 years ago to market Kuranda as a tourist destination at the re-

quest of the then Chamber of Commerce, subsequently an advisory committee was set up to help direct the project.

The advisory committee was made up of industry and marketing experts with years of experience behind them and local operator representatives as marketing is not a core skill within local government.

The sole focus of Tourism Kuranda was to promote

Kuranda as a tourist destination and was instrumental in organising a range of events and marketing activities to attract visitors to the region.

Advertising, social media and digital marketing campaigns and promoting Kuranda at industry and trade events were just some of the methods used to promote Kuranda.

The levy was set up to help fund the marketing projects required to advertise Kuranda

as a tourist destination.

Commercial rate payers in Kuranda were asked to pay the levy as the advertising would bring tourists to the town and spend money in their shops.

The decision was made to dismantle the levy that supplied the program after a ballot clearly showed that commercial rate payers in Kuranda did not see the benefit of the levy at this point in time.

MSC Mayor Angela Toppin and the rest of the councillors deeply regret Tourism Kuranda dismantling but have stated that they will review the levy at the behest of Kuranda locals if needed.

“The balance of this years Tourism Kuranda budget will now be expended in promoting to visit Kuranda and spend your money here, this will last until the remaining funds expire,” she said.

“One of the things that council is doing is having talks with Tropical Tourism North Queensland about the marketing of Far North Queensland as a whole, which will include Kuranda.

“Given that a lot of the domestic market will be unable to go overseas we hope that locals will be more inclined to spend more time exploring their local areas like Kuranda.”

Beautification underway THE construction buzz in Mareeba is set to continue with Mareeba’s main thoroughfare being enhanced over the coming weeks, as stage two of the Byrnes Street beautification project gets underway.

Mareeba Shire Council started work to upgrade the streetscape along the eastern side of Byrnes Street on Sunday.

Mareeba Shire Mayor Angela Toppin said the project is part of the continued Byrnes Street beautification program.

“Works will include the construction of new garden beds to match those in place on the western side of the street,” Cr Toppin said.

Work commenced on Sunday May 31, with the removal of vegetation from the

existing garden beds along the full length of the eastern side of Byrnes Street.

Construction of new garden beds, plantings and installation of irrigation will be staged in six sections starting at Lloyd Street and working south towards Rankin Street. Minor pavement defects will also be remedied during the construction phase.

Car parking bays will also be upgraded following the installation of the new garden beds.

The Byrnes Street upgrade was initially scheduled for after the Mareeba Rodeo however given the event is not going ahead, Council decided to bring forward the project before the full COVID-19 restrictions are lifted.

Gridlock as Byrnes Street lights up

MAREEBA got its first taste of traffic lights on Friday afternoon when the new Byrnes Street lights were officially switched on for the first time.

But excitement soon turned to mayhem as motorists had to deal with not one, but three sets of lights at various locations due to the John Doyle Bridge closure, causing delays and gridlock for hours on the usually easy to navigate town streets.

The new multi-lane set of lights on Byrnes Street replaces the roundabout and was introduced to provide better safety for motorists and pedestrians

alike.

Mareeba local, Norma Moloney was excited to see the lights working for the first time but is waiting to see what kind of effect they will have.

“I’m still reserved as to whether it is better than the roundabout,” she said.

“We will have to wait and see what kind of effect it has on the town.

“If these lights make things safer for motorists and pedestrians, than that is a good thing.”

The closure of the John Doyle Bridge on Anzac Avenue on the same day added to the

traffic woes and saw travel times for some motorist increase from 10 minutes to nearly one hour during peak periods.

Mareeba Shire Council crews and local Police responded and worked as quick as they could to ease the congestion.

Council issued a statement on Friday afternoon apologising for the inconvenience and thanking motorists for their patience.

Council is working with the contractor and the Department of Transport and Main Roads to revise the traffic management plan in a hope to ease the congestion.

With so many major infrastructure upgrades continuing in Mareeba, Mrs Moloney is excited to see the town grow and prosper.

“With the way Mareeba is progressing I think we will see similar projects starting around the town as it grows,” she said.

“It’s good to see the town grow, we get more businesses, more residents so it’s inevitable that the infrastructure will grow.

“These sorts of projects are stepping stones that help us build a better and stronger community.”

Last litter program helps pet owners WITH dog ownership at an all-time high during the current COVID-19 crisis, one Tablelands animal rescue organisation is hoping to make inroads into unwanted pets.

Animal Rescue Tablelands (ART) is asking dog owners to become part of its last litter program.

The program requires pet owners to surrender unwanted litters and in return, ART pays for the desexing of the mum at no cost to the owner.

Sandy Brown who is the

operator and manager of ART believes it’s a win-win situation, “With the mum becoming desexed, it stops future unwanted pregnancies and the pups are placed into forever homes, after getting all their vet work done and it doesn’t cost the owner a cent,” she said.

“It helps to break the cycle of unwanted animals, it saves families from unwanted and accidental litters, and also prevents back yard breeders.”

The program has been running for about three years

“A lot of people take us up on this because they can't afford to pay a vet for desexing,” she said.

“Many pet owners are surprised when they find out their pet is pregnant, so after giving birth, they’re not sure what to do with the pups and they don’t want their dog getting pregnant again.

John Doyle Bridge works underway MAREEBA Shire Council (MSC) has commenced works on the John Doyle Bridge.

The bridge, on Anzac Avenue in Mareeba, was closed on Friday with changed traffic conditions in place. The new alternative routes and traffic lights caused a few teething problems on day one and brought Mareeba to gridlock as motorists made their way home.

The project, expected to take four months, will include replacing the superstructure of the bridge (timber girders and steel deck) with steel concrete and strengthen the existing concrete substructure (piers and abutments).

MSC Mayor Angela Toppin said it’s important for these infrastructure works to take place now.

“Our capital works continue, because we want to be ready when the pandemic is lifted, so that as a shire we can move forward and one of these projects is the John Doyle Bridge project on Anzac Avenue,” Mayor Toppin said “This is a very busy corridor, for residents and freight entering our shire. At the moment the bridge is limited to 5 tonnes.

“We want to restore this bridge as a main conduit to service the shire.

Mayor Toppin is asking for patience as the Bridge may be closed for up to four months.

“We are going to have to be very patient as we work through this because it will take some time to ensure that it is done properly and safely.”

Access for pedestrians, cyclists and mobility scooters will be available via a temporary foot-bridge that was lifted into place last week.

As part of the changed traffic conditions residents will not be able to right turn into Anzac Avenue from the Ken-

nedy Highway if coming from Cairns, with a council spokesperson saying; “The traffic management plan has been put together to balance the extra traffic being pushed onto the highway as a result of the bridge closure. Motorists will not be able to turn right into Anzac Avenue from the highway to avoid congestion (queuing) and ensure traffic flows safely and efficiently.”

During construction, the bridge will be temporarily closed to all traffic. Drivers will need to access Mareeba’s CBD via the Kennedy Highway and allow extra travel time.

Fruit on the rise SWEET FUTURE: Stephen Scurr of Pinata Farms in Mareeba says pineapples are having a resurgence during the COVID-19 crisis.

THE agriculture sector has not been immune to the coronavirus impact, but things are looking sweeter for the region as restrictions ease and people to get used to a new found normality.

When pubs, clubs and res-

taurants had to close, as well as holiday bookings at hotels and cruises cancelled, the domino effect saw many local growers not being able to move fruit and vegetables in the same volumes as they did previous to COVID-19.

Pineapples were one industry that took an initial hit, but with people looking to boost their immunity, the health benefits of the prickly tropical fruit are helping to boost sales again.

The love affair with pineap-

ples is great news for local grower Stephen Scurr and his family, who started planting Pineapples in Mareeba in 1994 under the Pinata Farms name.

“When we planted our first pineapples in the Mareeba

district of tropical north Queensland in 1994, we were entering uncharted territory for pineapple production,” he said.

Piñata Pineapples are now grown on four adjoining farms spread over 150 hectares at Paddy’s Green, just outside of Mareeba.

The Scurr family own and run the farms with Stephen’s sons, daughters and brother all working on the farm.

“Every year, we plant 2.3 million pineapples and harvest about three million. At peak times, our shed can pack 3,000 trays a day,” Stephen said.

“COVID hasn’t affected us as much as other farmers, the only headache has been the extra cleaning and the social distancing.

“At the moment we are still in planting season so we don’t need anywhere near as many workers which has been good and because we are still planting we can stay on the farm and selfisolate.”

Mr Scurr admits that the pineapple industry did take an initial hit to sales due to COVID-19, with hotels, buffet breakfasts and cruise ships all big users of pineapple.

“At the beginning, people were just not eating fruit or vegetables, but since then it has picked up again as people realised that pineapples are high in vitamin C and that they needed to start taking care of their health and immune system.”

“In the last month, our sales

have bounced back.”

Avocadoes were in a similar situation. Jim Kochi, who is the North Queensland Director and Avocados Australia Chairman saying the April that, “A few weeks ago, the avocado market really dropped, the market has now stabilised, and people have gotten over the shock of staying at home. They’ve realised they can't live on tinned food and frozen pies, people are now buying fresh fruit and veg again.”

Another person happy to see an increase in fruit sales is President of FNQ Growers, Joe Moro.

“Fruit sales are starting to increase, except for limes, which is one of the commodities still under pressure because the hospitality industry still hasn’t opened up,” said Mr Moro.

“But overall there has been an increase with fruit, it’s a sign of a return to normality.”

Mr Moro believes the lifting of fruit sales is a combination of people being more healthconscious and the lifting of some restrictions.

“There’s been a few national campaigns by the peak bodies to encourage sales and for people to eat healthier, and that’s helped,” he said.

“Also the reopening of some pubs and cafes has helped, but I also think there was an overreaction initially and people have started to settle down into more considered spending practices when it comes to food.”

Growers call for key freight route upgrade FNQ Growers, the peak industry body for Far North Queensland’s horticulture industry, is calling for an upgrade to a link that forms part of a key inland freight route.

Ootann Road connects Burke Developmental Road to the Hann Highway (Kennedy Developmental Road) and forms part of the inland freight route, connecting the Far North region to southern wholesale markets.

FNQ Growers chair Joe Moro said in its current state, the Mareeba Shire Coun-

cil controlled Ootann Road – unsealed, narrow and not suitable for heavy vehicles – posed a barrier to providing an alternative freight route for the region.

“Freight connectivity is critical for the horticultural industry in Far North Queensland,” Mr Moro said.

“Currently, the majority of produce that is grown on the Atherton Tablelands and areas to the north, west and south, is trucked south to wholesale markets mostly via the coastal route (Bruce Highway).

“Freight connectivity is critical for the horticultural industry in Far North Queensland”

“This freight movement comes at a considerable cost to the grower and also presents reliability issues during the wet season.

“The inland route, including Ootann Road, plays an

important role in the intra and inter-state integrated heavy vehicle transport network which links to the Inland Rail, the largest freight rail infrastructure project in Australia.”

Mr Moro said State and

Federal Government support was needed to upgrade Ootann Road to be suitable to cater for freight traffic, which would deliver wide ranging benefits to a range of industries.

“FNQ Growers would like to see a sealing and widening upgrade for Ootann Road to enable it to cater for multitrailered heavy transport or, alternatively, a progressive sealing and widening program that will deliver benefits and results in the next five years,” Mr Moro said.

LEADER of Katter's Australian Party and member for Traeger Robbie Katter has mooted the idea of unemployed hospitality and retail workers from coastal areas heading to the outback and working on rural properties.

“There's plenty of capacity to hire unskilled workers in rural industries out west,” Mr Katter said.

“You can accommodate unskilled people in rural areas and skill them up pretty fast.

“A cattle station in Cloncurry told me they had taken on bar staff from a local pub, but said they could use more workers.”

Mr Katter laments that it’s

normally hard to attract people to these types of roles, due to the remoteness.

“What’s important for people to know is that they don’t need skilled labour, people can get a job helping with the gardening, or a bit of fencing, or just working as a governess, it takes a bit of pressure off the other workers.” he said.

“The Government is flogging a dead horse in the tourism regions with Jobkeeper.

“Those businesses can’t operate and they’re likely to be constrained for some time, so why not take the opportunity to try and hire people where there

are jobs available.”

Mr Katter claims a large percentage of 457 visa workers have left the country making opportunities available to people who are willing to work out west.

“There’s a lot of work available for unskilled workers, so an unemployed barista in Cairns could realistically move out west for 12 months and find work and get skilled up as a fencing offsider,” he said.

“These positions are normally filled by travellers and there’s not a lot of them around at the moment, they are not coming into the country like they

normally would, and that’s not likely to improve over the next 6-12 months.”

Robert Chaplain, who runs his family’s cattle station just out of Cloncurry, thinks the government needs to step in and take JobKeeper one step further to help farmers.

“There is work in rural areas especially in agriculture, there needs to be an incentive for people to move out here,“ he said.

“When JobKeeper ends, there’s going to be huge unemployment, rather than paying people to sit at home, why not get a co-contribution between the federal government and farmers or agriculture owners to pay half each.

“This will encourage people to get work on farms, where farmers can’t afford the extra labour costs.

“This would help the agriculture industry, as well as the towns that support agriculture, it would help keep unemployment down and it would incentivise people to move to rural and regional areas.”

Mr Chaplain believes the COVID-91 crisis is an opportunity to get people into rural areas and working in agriculture.

“Some of the tourist and hospitality businesses won’t be able to get back on their feet, so why not put money into the agriculture sector?” he said.

“This would help the industry that supplies food to Australia, we currently has fulfilling work opportunities and it gets people moving into the regional areas.”

News Corp announces closure of regional newspapers ON Thursday, May 28 Executive Chairman of News Corp Australasia Mr Michael Miller announced that many of its regional titles would be moved to digital-only.

News Corp will continue to publish its major regional titles The Hobart Mercury, NT News, Cairns Post, Townsville Bulletin, Gold Coast Bulletin, Toowoomba Chronicle and Geelong Advertiser – both digitally and in print.

A total of 112 of Rupert Murdoch’s print newspapers will stop the presses, including 36 which will close altogether and 76 which will remain as online mastheads. News Corp will not specify how many staff each title will have if any, or how much local reporting will continue.

In a written statement from News Corp “news from the towns covered by the Atherton Tablelander, Northern Miner, Port Douglas and Mossman Gazette and Burdekin Advocate will continue to appear, as it does now, under the regional sections of the Cairns Post and Townsville Bulletin.”

It’s believed that The Atherton Tablelander and Port Douglas and Mossman Gazette will cease printing at the end of June with news content from those areas to be incorporated into the pages of The Cairns Post.

KAP Leader and Traeger MP Robbie Katter said today’s decision had sent shockwaves across Queensland and would undoubtedly have a disproportionate impact on rural and regional communities where the local ‘rag’ was a vital source of community information and connectedness.

“To have these local papers ripped away from us just breaks your heart, and it draws a line in the sand between city and country in terms of where the big corporations are willing to invest their dollars,” he said.

“We are not dinosaurs, and accept the world is moving online but to get your news via a link is certainly no substitute for an actual newspaper that is curated and tailored for its readership.

“The big concern here also is jobs – there are some really great journalists working out in the regions who perform vital roles on so many levels.

“We are yet to learn what

this means for those people, but to say we are concerned is an understatement.”

Incoming President of the Queensland Country Press Association, Phill Le Petit, of The Star Group, said despite the decision by NewsCorp to cease print edition of its country newspapers in Queensland, many communities across Queensland still being serviced by their local papers.

“There are still 30 of our member newspapers continuing to publish in Queensland, along with many other smaller independent community publications. And across Australia, there are some 200 independently owned country newspapers continuing to service their communities with printed editions.

“Most of the NewsCorp mastheads in Queensland will continue to provide news, community information and promotions through their online news websites.

“It’s a tragedy for any community to lose their printed local newspaper – traditionally the champion of local issues, holding local councils and government to account when they need to, recording the highs, lows, disasters, celebrations, contributions and history of the people and their town.

“Country people traditionally believe the local paper actually belongs to the local town community – and the publisher just happens to be the custodian of it at this point of history.

Breast screen services reopen

OPEN: The BreastScreening Queensland vehicle ‘Rosie’ that was unveiled earlier in the year is now back on the road after the recommencing of services on Monday.

FOLLOWING the easing of restrictions across the Far North, BreastScreen Queensland (BSQ) has decided to reopen its services in Cairns and send their mobile vans back out into communities.

The clinic and subsequent mobile breast screening services were suspended on April 1 due to COVID-19 and was reopened on Monday, June 1.

Earlier this year, BSQ unveiled their second mobile breast screening service the ‘Desert Rose’ or ‘Rosie’, Rosie was set to visit remote communities with her state-of-the-art equipment during 2020.

Rosie’s tour was cut short however with the dangers and implications of COVID-19, and BSQ is currently in talks with the relative authorities for Rosie’s travel to the cape communities with the travel ban still in place.

With Breast Cancer being the most commonly diagnosed cancer for Australian women, BSQ Cairns Service Chief Radiographer Deb Halliwell is stressing the importance of checkups.

“Early detection of breast cancer provides the best chance of effective treatment and increases the patient’s survival, treatment options and quality of life,” she said.

“The mobile bookings are going extremely well with Cairns team conducting 1370 phone calls since recommencing services on May 18.

“We know that women in rural and regional communities are more likely to use the service if it is easier to access and the mobile units do just that.”

BSQ Cairns Health Service Promotion Officer Sandra Peut said that the service is taking all possible steps to minimise and address risk from COVID-19 for staff and clients.

“We kindly ask our clients to bring their own pen to complete the paperwork and call to reschedule their appointment if they are feeling unwell with flulike symptoms,” she said.

“We also ask our clients to not arrive in advance for their appointment as we need to minimise the amount of people in the clinic waiting areas.

“For this reason, we also ask

where possible that our clients do not bring anyone with them to their appointment.”

Regular breast screens are recommended for women aged 50 to 74 years to help with early detection and treatment of the cancer, women in their 40s and those aged over 75 are also eligible for the free service every two years.

“Our service and staff thank our local women for their support and patience during our temporary suspension, and we look forward to seeing you in the clinic soon,” Ms Peut said.

“We are contacting all women who had appointments cancelled during our temporary suspension to reschedule.”

The mobile breast screening services have had to adjust to a new schedule; the vehicles will now be in Innisfail from June 8 to August 25 and Tully from August 27 to September 24.

One Nation threatens legal action LAST week leader of One Nation and Queensland Senator Pauline Hanson threatened the Queensland State Government with a legal challenge to reopen domestic borders.

She says she has enlisted a “top lawyer” and hopes to fundraise $1 million to cover the legal bills.

Ms Hanson demanded that the government reopen the state’s borders by Thursday, May 28, or face legal action in the High Court.

It’s believed that One Nation sent a letter to Ms Palaszczuk on Tuesday, May 26 telling her she has until Thursday (May 28) to respond, accusing Premier Annastacia Palaszczuk of “destroying people’s lives and livelihoods” and that the border closures were unconstitutional.

“Because the border ban is invalid, we request that you undertake to revoke the Border Ban by 4pm on 28 May 2020,” the letter says.

After Ms Hanson's deadline came and went with no change from the State Government she issued a written statement: “Following the Queensland

Premier’s refusal to re-open the state's border by 4pm yesterday (May 28), lawyers acting on behalf of several Queensland businesses expect to file a Section 92 challenge in the High Court, either today (May 29) or early next week.

I am disappointed in the Queensland tourism body, the state Mayors, and those industry leaders who have failed to take up this fight and challenge Annastacia Palaszczuk over the border closure.

I do however want to congratulate the plaintiffs in this case, who have very strong prospects and have stepped forward to take on this rogue state government.

Now that the case is in the hands of lawyers, all further media enquiries should be referred to Mitchell Downes of Mahoneys.”

Last week Ms Hanson posted on Facebook that she had engaged a pro-bono constitutional lawyer who was willing to represent Queenslanders whose business had been impacted in a High Court challenge.

“Annastacia Palaszczuk must abide by the Australian constitution and do the right thing by Queenslanders,” she wrote on Facebook.

“Her actions are causing me a great deal of concern for the economic viability of our state.

“There is no cure or vaccine for the coronavirus, and until there is, all states and territories must learn to live with the virus.”

The State Government has dismissed the legal threat, saying it has to balance the timing of the reopening of the borders with medical advice, with Queensland’s Chief Health Officer Dr Jeannette Young backing in the Premier.

Dr Young has said that the borders may remain closed beyond September and said businesses should realistically be planning for the closure to last four more months.

“If the tourist industry wants a realistic scenario then they should be preparing for September but I say to them, that if everything went perfectly and it was possible that maybe it could happen earlier,’’ she said.

Time runs out for farmers and MSF LAST month MSF Sugar announced that they would not be making their molasses available to local farmers.

After some outrage from local farmers and politician’s, MSF backed down from that stance, saying that they would make their molasses available to local farmers at an inflated priced of $250 per tonne, about $100 a tonne more than what they paid last year.

At the time MSF also announced they would require a $100 per tonne deposit, all orders would have to be picked up before December 11 and all orders needed to be placed by May 31.

In April, Hill MP Shane Knuth was contacted by a number of farmers who were concerned that the price of molasses had increased drastically.

“They (MSF) wanted farmers to place orders of molasses by Saturday, May 30 and force them to pay a large deposit upfront for a yearly order, then pick up the balance by early December and store the molasses themselves,” Mr Knuth said.

“Many suppliers or farmers simply do not have the storage capacity for tonnes of molasses on their properties.

“These terms were ridiculous and out of reach for most farmers.

“After extensive negotiation, MSF got rid of the deposit payment and decided to stay in line with their previous year’s onsite storage terms.

“The one thing they wouldn’t budge on despite numerous requests was the price.”

Mr Knuth expressed his disappointment that MSF Sugar have not come to the table to reduce molasses prices for local farmers.

Now that the deadline for ordering has passed (May 31) MSF will have got their way either by getting a premium price locally, or by pricing themselves so far out of the market they will now have to sell their molasses overseas.

Mr Knuth said it was disappointing that local farmers and suppliers,

who have been long-term, loyal purchasers have been left out in the cold.

“If the price of molasses drops next year or the year after, MSF Sugar may have to crawl back to the same local suppliers and farmers who they always previously relied on to purchase their product,” he said.

“So, looking after them in the short term would be the smart option.”

Queensland Senator Susan McDonald has been one of the biggest critics of MSF and their plan to ship Molasses offshore.

“MSF is still giving every indication they don’t want to sell molasses to North Queensland farmers and instead export it to Thailand. This, quite frankly, is disgraceful corporate bastardry.” She said “I have tried to reason with MSF executives and explain the horrendous impacts their stance will have on Northern cattle and dairy producers, but they haven’t budged.

“Good corporate citizens would consider the needs of Australian farmers instead of purely chasing profit.

“I encourage farmers affected by MSF’s pricing to urgently seek new sources for their molasses if they can.”

In a statement from MSF Company Secretary Brad Egerton said, “With regard to price, the molasses marketplace is a competitive market.

Consumers have the ability to elect to source their molasses from a number of international and domestic suppliers. Despite the rise in the price of molasses, we have nonetheless taken orders from Australian sugar cane farmers, Australian suppliers, as well as Australian graziers, so despite what some people are saying about local buyers potentially being priced out of the market, the facts prove otherwise.

MSF Sugar will continue to support local consumers by supplying molasses to the domestic market at the market price.”

Beekeepers warn that crops could fail WORLD Bee Day was on May 20 and the Queensland Beekeepers' Association marked the day with a call for a financial help from the government, warning crops will fail if starving bees don't make it through winter.

The combination of drought and bushfires has left little food in the wild and many commercial beekeepers are being forced to hand feed their insects to keep them alive.

In February the Queensland Government announced a $1 million emergency package, including a $650,000 contribution to the wavering of all apiary fees and a $350,000 sugar stockpile to feed the bees.

Queensland Beekeepers Association president Jo Martin said many commercial beekeepers were in serious financial and ecological trouble.

“It’s crippling us at the moment, in 134 years of bee keeping in Queensland, we have never seen conditions like this before,” Ms Martin said.

“We are in the fight for our lives.”

Ms Martin added that the industry

desperately needed more financial help because food security was at stake.

“The real concern for us is how are we going to keep those beehives alive at the moment, you've got beekeepers out there that haven't had any income in over 18 months so we're really starting to get to crunch time,” Ms Martin said.

Queensland Beekeepers have now applied for a second round of funding.

“We have spoken to the Minister for Agricultural Industry Development and Fisheries, Mark Furner and he has flagged it with other departments.”

Ms Martin said Honey Production is a bi-product of a healthy bee industry.

“You can tell by honey production, how healthy bee populations and the industry is,” she said “If we don’t see a second round of funding for bee keepers to supplement their hives, we won’t have the volume of bees ready to go and do pollination work.

“Without those healthy bee numbers fruit volumes may be down and the quality of produce may drop.”

Australian Honeybee Industry Coun-

cil chair Peter McDonald says, “It’s been estimated that Queensland's honey crop will be down by about 90 per cent and New South Wales might be down by between 60 and 80 per cent,” Mr McDonald said.

Of the 79,000 commercial hives in Queensland – 45,000 of them are used for crop pollination – with avocado, seedless watermelon, strawberries, blueberries and macadamias, all dependent on bees.

One of the companies that supplies commercial pollination services to Far North Queensland is G & A Apiaries.

Owner Graham Armstrong said that he and his son now have over 1000 bee hives.

“We travel to farms all over Queensland from the Burdekin in the south through to the Tablelands and up into Lakeland,” he said.

“We drop a truckload of hives off and let them do their work for a few weeks and then we move the bee’s onto the next farm, as there aren’t enough native bee’s left to carry the load.”

THE redevelopment of the Atherton Hospital has been underway for the past couple of months and progress can clearly be seen from the ground, and from the air.

A photo was taken by a pilot from Queensland Government Air (QG Air) who was on approach to the Atherton Hospital site, and the sheer size of the redevelopment is clearly seen.

Amongst all of the new footpaths, buildings and other constructions projects visible what stands out the most is the sheer

size of the new helipad compared to the old one.

QG Air Base Manager and Senior Pilot Phil Frost said that he was very impressed with the size of the new helipad.

“We were so impressed with the helipad construction from the air that we had to take a photo,” he said.

“This shows how it will be much safer for landing and takeoff for pilots and patients.

“We are pleased that the health service has included this critical infrastructure for the Ta-

blelands community in the redevelopment.”

Along with the new helipad, internal roadways are under construction to improve patient safety, a large staff car park and a new engineering services building to replace the old helipad are also on the to do list.

Atherton Hospital Director of Nursing Ann Aitken said the health service was delighted with progress at the hospital redevelopment.

“As you can see a lot of working is taking place around

the grounds of the hospital,” she said.

“The roof is on the new Community and Allied Mental Health Building (CAMHB) in Jack Street and internal walls and fittings are being completed and behind this a new Q fleet carpark is being completed.

“This portion of work will be handed back to the hospital by the principal contactor FKG Group later this year before work begins on the next stage, the Clinical Services Building.”

WITH less than five months until the next state election, most political parties are now on the lookout for possible nominees for regional seats.

Last week NQ First leader Jason Costigan fired the first shots in the 2020 state election by controversially announcing former Wujal Wujal Mayor Desmond Tayley as his nominee for the seat of Cook.

At the time Mr Costigan said, “Desmond Tayley proudly served almost 20 years in local government and continues to have the respect of people throughout the Far North, regardless of where they live and the colour of their skin,” said Mr Costigan.

“I’ve come to know, respect and admire Desmond Tayley over the years like so many other people.”

Mr Cositgan is now under police investigation for entering Cooktown which is in lockdown due to the current COVID-19 crisis.

It’s also believed that the Katter Australia Party (KAP) are currently interviewing interested residents to run in Cook.

THE Tablelands Regional Council (TRC) has released a new survey to see just how prepared the community is in case of a disaster situation.

The ‘Disaster Preparedness – Are You Ready?’ survey seeks to see if locals are well prepared in the case of an emergency disaster situation and if they understand the implications of a community going through a disaster.

TRC is encouraging residents to participate in the survey so

that the council has a better understanding of how they will fair in the case of a disaster.

“We need to ensure our community is well prepared, capable and self-sufficient during and after disasters so we can reduce the burden on emergency services and volunteers,” said Councillor Bernie Wilce.

“We’ve developed a survey that assesses how prepared our community is for a disaster, and the results will help us to focus

our resources and support on areas of need.

“The survey includes questions about emergency action plans, disaster communication, plans for pets if you are evacuated and other questions that will help us form a picture of the status of our disaster preparedness.”

THE summer of 2019/2020 was the worst on record for bushfires across the nation.

It was to become known colloquially as the Black Summer and began with several serious uncontrolled fires in June 2019.

One year later the fires had burnt an estimated 18.6 million hectares (46 million acres; 186,000 square kilometres) destroyed over 5,900 buildings (2,779 homes) including one home lost at Biboohra and at least 34 people were killed. An estimated one billion animals were killed, and some endangered species may have been driven to extinction.

The Mareeba Shire Council have already started their controlled burns for 2020 with burns taking place last week in Chillagoe and Dimbulah.

The MSC announced that there will also be controlled burns in several locations around Mareeba over June at The Granite Creek Area, the

Mareeba Industrial Park, Pioneer Cemetery and Wyandra Estate MSC Mayor Angela Toppin says that controlled burns are needed to prepare hazard reduction.

“Fuel reduction burns form a major component of Council's fire management strategy and are programmed to occur at the earliest possible time after the wet season when vegetation is in a condition to be burnt,” Mayor Toppin said.

“Getting the burns done before the hot weather arrives is important to reduce risk.

“We encourage all landowners to begin their preparations as early as possible.”

The fuel reduction burns were carried out in collaboration with the Queensland Fire and Emergency Services and Queensland Department of Natural Resources, Mines and Energy.

“Between them, these two

State Government departments have the ability to supply crew, vehicles and appliances,” said Mayor Toppin.

“It is dependent on current ground conditions whether the additional resources will be required, but the assistance and advice from the departments are invaluable to us.”

“Likewise, Council also provides resources to assist, when required, to these entities,” Mayor Toppin said.

According to a council spokesperson, “The planned hazard reduction burns will reduce the fuel loads and help to protect life and property during the wildfire season, and it is advisable to remove any clothing from clotheslines during this operation. The timing of the controlled burns is weather dependent.”

Lotus Glen safety fears

FEARS for the safety of staff and inmates is growing at the Lotus Glen Correctional Centre, as claims of overcrowding and understaffing continue.

Micheal Thomas, Director of Industrial Services at Together Union, claims that Lotus Glen is suffering significant overcrowding.

“The whole state system is overcrowded and Lotus is at one of its highest levels ever at the moment,” he said “If you look at the corrective services act it prescribes that where possible, prisoners should be in single-person accommodation.

“All prisons were originally designed as single-cell accommodation, there has now been some retrofitting of bunk beds to go in. For a period of time some prisoners were sleeping on mattresses on the floor before the bunk beds were put in.”

There have also been reports from staff within Lotus Glen, that the atmosphere is troubling with unrest and protests taking place regularly at the facility.

According to Mr Thomas COVID-19 regulations, which prevent visitor access and mail delivery to prisoners, was creating a perfect storm.

“Doing the right thing to stop COVID getting in has lead to tension that is being exacerbated due to the overcrowding situation.” He said “I’m afraid that sooner or later something very serious is going to happen at Lotus Glen.”

He said assaults on staff were increasing, due to cell sharing and virus restrictions and the lack of mail was blocking illicit drug deliveries into jail, which he said would be adding to prisoner unrest.

According to Queensland Corrective Services: “As at this morning, (May 28) there were 882 prisoners in the high-security prison, Lotus Glen high security has 696 cells and 888 built beds. The farm has 124 beds, and there are 99 prisoners there presently.

We have introduced prisoner email and virtual personal visits to allow prisoners to keep in touch with their families. Visits will recommence in line with the relaxation of community restrictions, and it is hoped that personal visits will recommence in July, depending on the community situation.”

From concrete and council to sugarcane

MSF sugarcane suppliers, cousins Tony and Italo Curcio, are hoping for a bumper 2020 harvest on their Yungaburra farms.

WITH the 2020 cane crush starting at the Tableland Mill this week, Yungaburra cousins Tony and Italo Curcio are celebrating the decision they took seven years ago to diversify into sugarcane.

Together with their families, the Curcio cousins today produce cane from some 60 hectares on their adjoining land holdings at Yungaburra, all while juggling off-farm jobs – Tony has his own concreting business and Italo works in local government.

“We were real greenhorns as far as cane goes, but it was actually pretty simple to get into and I’m really happy how it’s worked out,” Italo Curcio said.

“The Tableland Mill had these incentive schemes in place to help with the cash flow part of it, and they helped us with contractors who could do the ground preparation and planting, plus advice on things like varieties, fertilisers and weed control.

“The mill also helped us with forward pricing, which has become a really useful tool in managing the farming business.”

Tony and Italo’s story is not an uncommon one, says Tableland Mill’s Gary Murphy.

“We’ve got quite a few growers like Tony and Italo who’ve successfully converted underutilised land to cane,” Mr Murphy said.

“MSF is offering some really good incentives right now – a $1,000 per hectare nonrepayable subsidy for new cane land, plus low-interest loans to help with establishing plant crops or maintaining ratoon crops.”

“We’re small growers, so we’ve still got our day jobs, but it’s been a great experience and it’s helped us make good use of land that wasn’t doing much at the time,” Tony Curcio said.

Tableland Mill was scheduled to start crushing yesterday, Tuesday, June 2.

Local mum pens school success SENDING children to their first day at school can be a challenging experience for both the parents and the student, with a mixture of anxiety, apprehension and the fear of the unknown.

But help is now available thanks to local author, teacher and mum, Julie Dore, who has just released her first book about helping students and parents adjust to school routines.

Julie who is a prep teacher noticed that a lot of parents had the same recurring questions about starting school and a lot of young children were starting school not understanding what was going on.

So Julie decided to write a book, hoping to make it easier for parents, kids, and the teachers.

“I’ve been teaching for 14 years and saw a need for a book just like this. I called it 'Prepping for School Success' to help parents, children and educators be better prepared for school and life in general,” she said.

“It has 12 chapters on topics such as routines, life skills, social development, emotional

development, behaviour, physical development, literacy, numeracy and special needs and all the illustrations in the book are by my five-year-old daughter, Claire.”

One of the biggest tips that Julie gives to parents is to get children into a routine early.

“Let them know what is going to happen at school and after school, get them used to the routine,” Julie said.

“Being a parent is hard, you are your child's first teacher and there are so many things they need to learn, from the time they're born to when they're at school.

“Your child will learn more in their first five years of life than ever. This book will help you and your child to not only survive but thrive in the early years. You can then stress a little less knowing you've done all you can to prepare them.”

Council hosts free webinars to support businesses

Tablelands Regional Council (TRC) has launched new free webinars for local businesses to support economic recovery and build resilience.

The webinars are focused on ensuring that local businesses are equipped with relevant and up-to-date business continuity information, skills and resources.

The first webinar was hosted

on Tuesday, June 2, and the second one is set to be held today, Wednesday, June 3. If you missed the webinars there are repeat sessions that have been scheduled by Council.

TRC Mayor Rod Marti said that these webinars are designed to assist businesses in planning for the future and operating during disasters.

“We need to ensure that we provide as much help as we can to local businesses to ensure they are resilient during disasters like pandemics, cyclones, fires and other disruptive events,” he said.

“This is especially important when you consider how long an event like COVID-19, could affect business.”

Mareeba Lions has for decades supported the Recycle for Sight programme where used and no longer required spectacles are gathered up from the public, cleaned, graded and distributed to people around the world. Mareeba Lions collects 500 to 1000 pair a year. Melbourne’s Diamond Valley Lions are no slouches when it comes to collecting glasses. They have collected 60,000 pairs in five years for the Lions Recycle for Sight Programme.

Through his association with local opticians Lion Doug Wilson collected 24,000 pairs, plus three lens-grinding machines and a phoropter (the machine used to determine the lens prescription for each eye) from a company which had been sold to another optical group. While Mareeba Lions could not emulate the Diamond Valley effort, we remind everyone that we are still collecting used glasses, and that they can be dropped into the Court House, or left with your Mareeba optometrist.

Mareeba Lions through the Annual Metrogaine has raised approximately $30,000.00 for the Australian Lions Childhood Cancer Research Foundation. Unfortunately, the Metrogaine has been cancelled for 2020.

The work of the Foundation guided by the moto “every child deserves a chance at a

healthy life, goes on. Recently the Foundation provided $1.05 million funding to the telethon Kids Institute. The Hon Julie Bishop Chair of the Telethon Kids Institute said: “We are so grateful for Australia Lions Childhood Cancer Research Foundation’s support, this $1.05 million in funding will enable the Telethon Kids Cancer Centre to continue its leading research into childhood cancer – particularly in the area of cancer immunotherapy, which focuses on supercharging the body’s natural defences to destroy cancer cells.” People wishing to support Childhood Cancer Research can always make a donation to the local Lions Club for that purpose.

Lions Clubs like everyone have been affected by COVID-19. No more BBQ’s or other events which are the norm as fund raising activities for us. Hopefully the restrictions will be lifted before the Christmas Raffle and Christmas Cakes come around.

Our country has endured drought, fires, floods and now COVID19. The Australian Lions Foundation has been accepting donations from Lions Clubs and the public for distribution to those affected by natural disaster.

To date $2.8m has been raised through Lions Clubs and private donation. Of that, $1.7m has been distributed to the affected Districts. Initial support provided included food, clothing, water, accommodation, fuel, stock fodder, water tanks, equipment for clearing and re-establishing property boundaries, community infrastructure such as playgrounds and park rebuilding and other essential items to help individuals restart. The focus now for many areas is on recovery and rebuilding where Districts are determining more of the longer-term requirements of their areas, which will be an on-going challenge. The Australian Lions Foundation has committed to be there for the “long haul” and to support all areas and their needs with the funding we have. With Lions all of the donations received are delivered to the victims.

AS coronavirus restrictions start to ease across Queensland, lots of businesses will start to come out of hibernation.

The challenge for businesses is that they won't be picking up from where they left, they will need to start slowly and build up, almost as if starting from anew.

Estimates are that one in three new small businesses in Australia fails in their first year of operation, two out of four by the end of the second year, and three out of four by the fifth year.

When these businesses reopen they're going to be looking for their loyal customers.

I’m sure we have all seen dozens if not hundreds of small businesses start and then fail, while others in similar industries seem to last the test of time.

Why do some businesses flourish while others seem to fail at the first hurdle?

Last year I had to organise a Christmas function, I emailed six different venues, and I’m still waiting for three of them to get back to me.

Last weekend I rang a local dog wash to enquire about their prices, I left a message and a week later I’m still waiting for the callback. It’s no surprise that I took my business elsewhere. I wonder when these businesses go broke will they blame COVID, economic conditions or their bad service?

If you own a small to medium business when was the last time you did an audit of your customer service? Try ringing from a random number and leaving an enquiry to see how long your staff take to get back to you?

Same with social media, if someone sends you an enquiry is it being responded to or does it

vanish into a black hole?

According to business insider, A dissatisfied customer will tell between 9-15 people about their experience. Around 13% of dissatisfied customers tell more than 20 people. Negative interactions with a business are spread to twice as many people as positive ones. People are twice as likely to talk about bad customer service experiences than they are to talk about good experiences.

67% of people spend money after getting recommendations from their friends.

Think about past dealings you’ve had with certain telecommunications companies, I can feel my pulse rate going up just writing that sentence.

It doesn’t matter how amazing your advertising is, if you don’t back it up with amazing service, it’s irrelevant.

So as businesses come out of mothballs and consumers are more nervous than ever, businesses have to ask themselves. If I build it will they come?

Jam Drops 20 mins preparation ● 15 mins cooking ● makes 20

Ingredients ▶ 175g Unsalted Butter (softened) ▶ 1 tsp vanilla extract ▶ 1/4 cup soft icing mixture (sifted) ▶ 1 cup plain flour (sifted) ▶ 1/4 cup cornflour ▶ 1/4 cup raspberry jam

Method 1. Preheat the oven to 180°C and line two baking trays with baking paper.

2. Beat the butter, vanilla and icing sugar in the bowl of an electric mixer on medium until pale and fluffy.

Add the flour and cornflour, and mix for 30 seconds or until a dough forms.

3. Lightly dust your hands with some extra flour, and then roll tablespoons of the mixture into balls. Place each onto the trays about 2cm apart and use your fingers to flatten slightly. Create a big thumbprint in the centre of the dough to create an indent, and then fill each with a small blob of jam (1⁄2 teaspoon).

4. Bake in oven for 10 minutes or until they turn light golden on the edges and the jam is bubbling.

5. Once baked, allow the biscuits to cool on the baking trays for five minutes before transferring to a wire rack

SPORT SUPPORT: The Atherton Roosters first grade side wearing the NRL Nines jerseys before their trial match with Mt Isa on March 7 this year.

Roosters gifted NRL Nines jerseys THE Atherton Roosters have been gifted an early Christmas present from the Sydney Roosters NRL team.

The Bondi based NRL team informed the local Atherton club last week that they could keep their 2020 NRL Nines jerseys

that were loaned to them earlier in the year.

The Nines jerseys were lent to the Atherton Roosters in March this year after they found out that their 2020 season jerseys would be late due to COVID-19.

When the Sydney Roosters heard about the clubs dilemma, they decided to gift the NRL Nines jerseys as a show of support.

Darryl Day, the Atherton Roosters Secretary is thankful for the kind show of support and

said the jerseys will be used if there are further delays to their jersey order.

“The jerseys will be kept spare and used if we have any further problems with our gear orders arriving late for the start of the season,” he said.

“They are top quality jerseys and a very kind gesture from the Sydney Roosters.

“It is great to have a high profile NRL club supporting a grassroots club like us.”

A spokesperson from the Sydney Roosters said that it is

important to support small town rugby league in these trying times.

“Community rugby league is a vital component of the game, and we are proud of this small way in which we could assist the Atherton Roosters.”

Local jockey in hospital after race day fall

RISING star jockey, Rachel Shred could be out of the saddle for some time after a shocking fall saw the local hospitalised.

Racing in Townsville at Cluden Park on May 21, the apprentice jockey was thrown from her horse suffering several

injuries and taken to hospital.

The accident occurred during an early race where she fell off her horse directly on her knee. Rachel has some suspected knee injuries and has been confined to the Townsville Hospital since.

Tolga based horse trainer, Janel Ryan has been in constant contact with Rachel and is confident in her recovery.

“We won’t know the extent of her injuries until she sees a specialist,” Janel said.

“We are keeping an eye on

her there will be a full enquiry conducted into the fall.

“I think she is going to be alright we have been in constant contact with her and seeing how she is doing.”

This is Rachel’s second injury in recent months after an-

other fall in Cooktown where she sustained a wrist injury which put her out of action for four months.

“She is receiving a lot of support from her friends and family not only over the phone but also over social media,” Janel said.

Gyms ready to open

LOCALS can rejoice after Essential Fitness, along with other gyms across the region, announced they will be reopening their doors after the stage two restrictions were brought forward.

Essential Fitness in Mareeba is excited to open again after nearly four months of being closed. Gyms were forced to shut down in March, one of the first industries to close amid the COVID-19 pandemic restrictions.

To make it through the lockdown period Essential Fitness

decided to hire out its equipment to its patrons to try and keep the community fit and involved.

Now with restrictions easing and the gym set to reopen, residents can once again visit the gym under new strict regulations and guidelines, along with following the directions handed down the Queensland Government and Queensland Health patrons will now be subject to a ‘No towel no train’ policy.

The policy is in place to better protect other gym users and their staff, people will also have

to bring their own mats if they wish to participate in the group workout sessions.

Essential Fitness manager, Jamie Lumley is excited for the doors to swing open again and for people to come back through the door.

“We are very excited to be reopening,” she said.

“It has definitely been a tough time not only for us but for the community who made it part of their routine to go to the gym.

“I think people will be excited to get back into their routines

and get out of the house.”

Essential Fitness isn’t the only business who is glad for the stage two restrictions to be lifted as both Cairns Total Physio and FNQ Podiatry and Othotics also operate out of the same building.

Cairns Total Physio was classed as an essential service and has been operating through the pandemic, but they did suffer a loss in business during the lockdown period.

Tim Lowcock, one of the directors of Cairns Total Physio suspects that business will con-

tinue to climb steadily as restrictions are lifted further.

“We were obviously quieter during the lockdown but we are starting to get back to normal hours,” he said.

“Normally we would have a waiting list for clients but that has been reduced a little bit.

“So we are operating as normal while following the new guidelines and hygiene guidelines handed down by the government.”

Kyle Richardson, Director for FNQ Podiatry and Orthotics said the business was also

classed as essential and remained open during the lockdown.

“People are more confident now to get out and get to their appointments,” he said.

“We are now seeing a lot of people with running related injuries as the gyms have been closed and people have been forced to find other ways to exercise.

“It was a trying time for everyone so it’s great to see the restrictions slowly be lifted and everyone getting back to a sense of normalcy.”

Campaign launched to assist grassroots clubs WITH grassroots sports clubs still reeling from the effects of COVID-19, the Australian Sports Foundation has launched a national campaign to help these struggling clubs stay afloat.

Following a pilot survey in April the Australian Sports Foundation found that there are significant problems that could cause many local

community clubs to fail and as a result, the Australian Sports Foundation has decided to launch a campaign.

The Australian Sports Foundation is a national sports charity and over the past 30 years they have distributed hundreds of millions of dollars to thousands of Australian sporting clubs, and this year they plan to assist clubs

struggling due to COVID-19 Patrick Walker, CEO of the Australian Sports Foundation has seen the effect COVID-19 has had on grass roots clubs and is looking to change it.

“There is a crisis in community sport which presents a real risk to the physical and mental health of our communities,” he said.

“Trying to reopen and get

members back onto sports fields is where the crisis for grass roots clubs will really start.

“We know there are clubs who need help and we need to hear from them.”

The campaign will be based on a mass survey of community clubs helping to determine additional funding needs and the best way to assist clubs

on reopening their doors and getting their members back to doing what they love.

“Sport has the power to bring communities together, to break down social barriers and to improve the health and wellbeing of everyone,” Mr Walker said.

“It will play a vital role as our communities recover from this crisis.

“We want to make sure that our community sports clubs are able to survive and assist in this recovery process.”

The new survey started on Wednesday, May 20 and will last until Friday June 19.
