Arts, culture, heritage – RADF grants now open

THE Regional Arts Development Fund (RADF) 2019/20 community grants round is now open.

Individuals, groups and not for profit organisations are invited to submit applications for funding for projects that enhance participation and development of the arts, heritage and cultural sector across the Shire.

Chair of the RADF Advisory Committee, Cr Angela Toppin said Mareeba Shire Council is looking for projects that build cultural capacity, innovation and community pride within the Mareeba Shire. “Earlier this year, Council provided funding totalling more than $35,000 to 11 arts and cultural groups and artists for projects that encourage participation in arts and culture and increase the opportunities of the local arts sector,” Cr Toppin said.

“Past projects have included public murals, interpretive historical storyboards and video documentation, development of local events, development of new works for exhibition and performance.

“We really want to focus on priority areas of youth arts engagement, public mural partnerships and cultural tourism, however we need talented and creative artists to put forward their ideas,” Cr Toppin said.

The Regional Arts Development Fund (RADF) is a partnership between the Queensland Government and Mareeba Shire Council that promotes the role and value of arts, culture and heritage as key drivers of diverse and inclusive communities and strong regions.

Colleagues gathered to honour pharmacist Angelo Amante (above) at the Mareeba Hospital last Thursday for his contribution to the community and the health industry in the region, as well as celebrate his 80th birthday.

Angelo Amante honoured for life’s work ONE of Mareeba’s most respected members of the community Angelo Amante celebrated his 80th birthday and well-deserved retirement at the Mareeba Hospital last Thursday.

It was also a chance for the Mareeba Hospital to honour Mr Amante for his enormous contribution to Mareeba and the health industry more specifically.

Mr Amante has an extensive resume in the pharmaceutical trade that spans decades, including running his own business from 1964-2007 where he operated as the sole pharmacist.

After his success trading as a community pharmacist for 43 years, Mr Amante would spend the remaining 11 years of his professional career

locuming, critically providing services to the Mareeba Hospital as well as across Far North and Western Queensland.

Mr Amante’s impact in Mareeba was significant, and a colleague of his spoke about the lasting legacy he will leave on the industry.

“Angelo has been a crucial part of our team here at the hospital since 2008 when we were very fortunate to have him offer his services to our hospital after he sold his private business in 2007,” they said.

“In the early years when the pharmacy was still the sole practitioner-based service, Angelo was crucial in providing emergent leave cover to ensure that the pharmacy could operate and continue to provide essential services for

our patients, for which I am extremely grateful for.

“It is a little hard to believe that 11 years have already passed by and for all of us within our team and across the hospital, I am sure you have enjoyed working with Angelo, as he not only has an admirable work ethic and level of professionalism all of us should aspire to, but he also

has a great sense of humour which always made the challenging days a whole lot easier to get through.”

It’s clear to see the importance of Mr Amante’s work in Mareeba and right across Far North and Western Queensland, and now that he is enjoying retirement, it is a contribution that will be sorely missed.

Firefighters continued to battle blazes across the region as hot temperatures and strong winds continue to be of concern.

Bushfires continue to batter region BUSHFIRES continued to ravage the Atherton Tablelands last week as firefighters battled significant blazes in Mutchilba, Irvinebank, Mareeba and Biboohra.

The Mutchilba and Irvinebank fires were of particular concern to Queensland Fire and Emergency Service (QFES) crews, with water bombing operations being carried out to contain the critical conditions.

QFES Incident Controller Steve Tognolini said they’re un-

able to determine how long each individual fire will burn for as weather conditions may change.

“We have a number of fires we are monitoring closely, but it’s the fire out near Mutchilba that has required multiple crews on scene to ensure it is contained,” he said.

“Several crews are working around the clock on the Tablelands including the QFES, Rural Fire Service Queensland, and the Department of Natural Resources and Mines who are con-

ducting back burns in the area.

“In addition, the water bombing operations carried out in Mutchilba and Irvinebank will be moved to Tinaroo Creek Road to ensure that blaze doesn’t pose a threat to properties in the area over the coming days.

“We are simply taking it each day at a time, as every time we seem to control one fire another one pops up.”

It is not only a calamity being felt on the Tablelands, with

more than 50 fires wreaking havoc across the state resulting in the loss of 17 homes and a further 67 that have been damaged.

That has raised suspicions amongst emergency response teams as to whether a number of the fires across the state have been deliberately lit.

Inspector Tognolini said there are currently investigations being undertaken as it relates to the bushfires that have occurred on the Tablelands.

for a trio of cardiology specialists at Cairns Hospital.

The trio is Director of Cardiology Dr Greg Starmer, Cairns Hospital cardiac services Nurse Unit Manager Mandi Pashley, and fellow interventional cardiologist Dr Anthony Brazzale.

Dr Starmer is well known as the son of Lex, who worked for the tobacco growers organisation for most of his working life.

Dr Starmer originally planned to return to the Far North as a general practitioner, but when he met his now wife Katrina in Brisbane, he had to stay there for some time in order for her to finish her studies.

“The director of cardiology at the Princess Alexandra Hospital suggested I might have a future in interventional cardiology,” Dr Starmer said.

The rest as they say, is history. He is riding in pack one this year.

Mrs Pashley also is passionate about her local community.

Born in Mareeba Hospital and partly raised on Brooklyn Station, she was always the one who “mended” injured family members.

“Probably from when I was little I wanted to look after people and when you live on a cattle property, you have to,” Mrs Pashley said.

She had worked on the cardiac ward at Cairns Hospital since 2001 and has been Nurse Unit Manager since 2018.

“I truly love this ward because we have some amazing patients and when you have a great team, you achieve great things together.” Mrs Pashley is one of the volunteer medics on this year’s ride.

Dr Brazzale is well known locally as being from the famous Brazzale’s Premium Mangoes family.

Although not riding this year as he is among the team staying in Cairns to help care for patients, Dr Brazzale rode last year

and has enjoyed several of this year’s training rides.

Obviously passionate about patient care, Dr Brazzale was led to specialise in cardiology due to family history of heart disease. He also is part of the newly formed Cardiac Outreach team, travelling through the Far North hosting cardiology clinics.

Powering the region through labour hire The Australian High Commissioner to Vanuatu was in Mareeba last week to discuss with both employees and employers involved in the Pacific Labour Scheme about enormous benefits it provides the region.

THE Australian High Commissioner to Vanuatu Jenny Da Rin was in Mareeba last Friday to visit Vanuatu workers who are living and working in the community as part of Australia’s labour mobility arrangements with Pacific Island countries.

The workers are part of the Pacific Labour Scheme, which provides regional employers an opportunity to access workers when local labour is not available. The Pacific Labour Scheme enables workers from Pacific island countries and Timor-Leste to work in Australia for a period

of three years.

The Pacific Labour Scheme (PLS) and the Seasonal Workers Programme (SWP) are ways for eligible businesses in regional and remote Australia to recruit workers from the Pacific islands and Timor- Leste when they can’t fill jobs locally.

They are demand-driven and employer-sponsored visa schemes, meaning eligible employers have control over who they recruit and which countries they want to recruit from, with participating nations being Kiribati, Nauru, Papua New Guinea,

Samoa, Solomon Islands, Tonga, Tuvalu, Fiji, Timor-Leste and Vanuatu.

“I am absolutely delighted to be here in Mareeba, it’s my first visit and I’m here to advance Australia’s interest overseas as well as interact with the communities on how we can continue to better them,” Ms Da Rin said.

“My visit to Mareeba has provided me the opportunity to speak with Pacific workers in the community to see how they’re going and what their goals are.

“In addition, I have spoken with employers in the region who are part of the labour scheme and find out just how beneficial the Pacific workers have been on the profitability of their business.”

One such employer who is reaping the benefits of the PLS is Luke Posma of Posma Bananas.

He spoke glowingly about the positive contribution Pacific workers are having on his business.

“I currently employ 13 workers under the Pacific Labour Scheme and will look at hiring

more in the future,” he said.

“Not only is it great as they have a fantastic work ethic, it’s also beneficial as it provides me with a reliable workforce who are happy to be there and that’s all I can ask for as an employer.

“I would like to take this opportunity to thank Kasey Rudd and her staff from Powerpac who do a wonderful job organising the labour hire for not only myself but other employers in the region too.”

Commercial fishing set for significant blow COMMERCIAL fishermen hold grave concerns for the long-term sustainability of their industry after the Queensland Government’s Minister for Fisheries Mark Furner announced tighter regulations in recent weeks.

The law changes include the establishment of new total allowable commercial catch limits of 42 tonnes for snapper and 15 tonnes for pearl perch. There is currently no catch limit on these species.

In addition, there will be expanding vessel tracking for remaining commercial fishing boats from January 2020.

Mr Furner said the changes were part of the Palaszczuk Government’s plan to protect fish for the future.

“Our state’s fisheries belong to all Queenslanders and it is our job to protect fish for the future,” he said.

“Some of our fish stocks

like scallops, snapper and pearl perch are at risk, with stock levels under the nationally recommended 20 per cent biomass level.

“If we do nothing now, we will have to take more drastic steps like they are proposing in South Australia with the closure of the snapper season for three years.

“Quite simply, if there are no fish, there is no fishing industry here in Queensland.

“Introducing catch limits for at risk species and continuing to crack down on illegal fishing will help us rebuild numbers.”

While most of the new restrictions are for recreational fishers on the east coast, Gulf of Carpentaria Fishermen Association Chair Shane Ward said a number of the laws still apply to the Gulf – and he fears it could mean the industry becomes unviable down the track.

“The whole reform process is wrong and it is going to drive many people out of the industry with no compensation,” he said.

“The Gulf of Carpentaria Commercial Fishermen Association has been trying to consult with government during this reform with little success just like many other commercial groups.

“Unlike the previous 40 years of working with successive governments, this government has a pre-set green agenda as this reform is a sham.”

Mr Ward said he is concerned about a lack of access to all fish stocks as they are a multi-species fishery with most fishers relying on different species at different times of the year.

“No compensation for these regulations is totally unfair and will destroy someone’s life’s work in the long run as many of these businesses are multigenerational,” he said.

The ball is not exclusive to Rotarians or ex-Rotarians.

“Everyone in the community is invited to come along and enjoy the party,” Mrs Wyatt said.

“We’ll be inviting other service groups, leaders in the community, etc.

“Anyone who’s ever been assisted, associated with or helped

by Rotary.”

Mrs Wyatt believes that the work that goes on behind the curtain is much more important than what people see.

“We have influenced a lot of lives, there’s a lot of stuff we do that we don’t just go outside and blow our horn,” she said.

“There’s a lot of stuff that happens in the background.

“We would love to see those people come along and give us a bit of support.”

A call to action is being put out for past Rotary exchange students who studied overseas during their schooling to attend the dinner.

“It would be really great if the past exchange students could come along,” Mrs Wyatt said.

“We have supported exchange students over the past 75 years to achieve something amazing and travel to different countries.

“It’s a whole other experience for the students.

THE Rotary Club of Mareeba will mark the 75th year of their founding with a celebration ball in November this year.

Chartered in 1944, Mareeba Rotary has been a long standing pillar in the community and will continue to be for a long time to come.

The 75th Anniversary Ball will be held on Saturday, November 9, at the Mareeba International Club and will give locals a chance to look back and celebrate on not only this year’s achievements, but all the achievements over the past 75 years.

The ball is set to be a showcase of glamour and glee with the theme being 1940s dress.

Mareeba Rotary Club President Lenore Wyatt is looking forward to the event and is encouraging people to attend.

“We’d like to see people coming along and supporting Rotary,” she said.

“Preparations are excellent, everything is moving smoothly at the moment – we’ve got the posters and invitations going out now.”

Rodeo family ready for NQ zone finals

FOR the first time in rodeo history, Eureka Creek will host the ABCRA NQ Zone Rodeo Finals on Saturday, September 28.

Competing on the day will be the best of the best from North Queensland and for one local family they can’t wait to compete in their own backyard.

With the NQ Zone Rodeo Finals being held at Eureka Creek Station, the Hilditch family from Dimbulah are only a stone’s throw away from the venue, much to the pleasure of competitor Joel Hilditch.

“We get to sleep in our own beds for a change,” he said.

“It’s a pretty good feeling to be chosen in the top 10 in North Queensland.

“And with Weston (our son) being so young and competing against older riders and still winning, he’s punching above his weight.”

His wife, Shandell echoed his comments.

“Normally we’re driving five or so hours to a rodeo, so it’s a good change,” she said.

“We were pretty much cheering when it was announced that it was going to be close to home.

“The traveling gets exhausting so you know, it’s nice for us to be a little bit spoiled.”

Joel and four year old son Weston have been confirmed to be competing in the zone finals as the invitations were sent out last Thursday.

Mrs Hilditch is in contention but is still waiting for confirmation, although she doesn’t mind assisting outside of the arena.

“I’ve been out singing on the weekends so I’ve missed a lot of the Rodeos to help me qualify,” she said.

“There’s still a chance there, but I don’t mind being the strapper for the weekend.

“I’m normally there with Weston and helping out in the arena anyway.”

Mrs Hilditch competes in the Ladies Breakaway while Joel will be competing in Steer wrestling and Team Roping. Weston however has been selected for all four events; Steer Riding, Dummy Roping, Barrel Racing and the Bending Race.

The Hilditch family has a home field advantage at this year’s NQ Zone Rodeo Finals with a large local crowd expected to gather to see the best of the best in Rodeo.

The NQ Zone Rodeo Finals are being hosted by Nugget of the North and Vice President Dan Miller is excited for Eureka Creek to be chosen to host the finals.

“I’d like to thank the ABCRA NQ Zone for the opportunity to host the finals,” he said.

“Hosting the finals can be financially straining, but we were in a position to put our hand up to volunteer to host.

“Especially since this is the first Zone final held up here (Tablelands).”

Mr Miller also stressed that the organisation (Nugget of the North) is a non-for profit organisation and actively gives back to the community as they have donated over $45,000 to local communities and charities.

Those competing in the Ro-

deo finals are competitors who have travelled throughout the year, earning points from their events in the NQ Zone which extends all the way to Rockhampton.

The competitors are judged and their scores added up, with the top 10 competitors in each rodeo event chosen to participate in the Zone finals. The finals are invitation only and some of the best of the best in Australia are invited to compete.

The event includes open and junior events.

“Every competitor in the Rodeo gets two chances at their event,” Mr Miller said, “It gives both the spectators and competitors a good event and a chance to improve off their first run.

“They all battle it out for the end of year buckle; it’s sort of the end goal from all the rodeos.”

Unlike other rodeos, the Zone Finals give competitors the opportunity to earn more points with an additional second round and average of the two rounds to secure the championship buckle.

Mr Miller is looking forward to the event and says preparations are “pretty much finalised”.

“We’re all looking forward to the rodeo, it’s an exciting thing,” he said.

“All the preparations are being finalised and the invitations are starting to go out.

“Competitors don’t even know if they’ve been chosen until the invitations arrive.”

compete so close to home.

“We have people from all over Queensland and some from New South Wales coming up,” he said.

“It’s an ideal competition to watch for Rodeo goers.

“It’s all the action without so much waiting.”

The Rodeo is set to be one of fast paced, adrenaline pumping action for spectators and competitors alike. Mr Miller is hoping to see good crowds and is planning to keep them up to date on scores live.

“A lot of the rodeos we see, people know what’s going on but they don’t know who is

where on the scores,” he said.

“So I’m hoping to keep the crowd involved and updated through live commentary.

“It gives spectators something to cheer for.”

With the rodeo being full of top notch competitors doing multiple runs, you could assume the rodeo will be drawn out with lots of downtime but Mr Miller assures that this won’t be the case.

“There’s not a lot of downtime as there’s always something going on,” he said.

“It’s very fast paced so spectators and competitors aren’t waiting around.

“People get more bang for their buck.”

The ABCRA NQ Zone Rodeo Finals will be held on September 28 from 9am at the same location as Eureka Creek Campdraft, Rodeo and Races (Eureka Creek Station).

In addition to the Rodeo events the day will also feature the popular Borghero Mini Buckers in the arena, plus live music till late with Moefos Band.

Mareeba State High School then went on to win the Final 5-2. Every one of the eleven players performed at a very high level with Shaun Stephens named Player of the Finals. Mareeba State High School is proud of the great things done by the students at our school. You will see some of the successes of the students in this term.

We are also monitoring the changes in behaviour over the term. One of the big areas of focus has been reducing Physical Misconduct and bullying behaviours. For Physical misconduct between 2017 and 2018 there was a 23% reduction. In 2018 – 2019 year, there has been a 48% further reduction. For bullying behaviours, in 2017 – 2018 there was a 44% reduction. In 20182019 there was a further 43% reduction in these behaviours. Mareeba State High School continues to be a calmer and safer environment due to the focus of Positive Behaviours for Learning in the school.

A group of students from Mareeba State High School attended a four day excursion last week to participate in the Challenge Games in Townsville. This was made possible with donations kindly given by our local businesses. A big thank you goes to Mareeba Rotary Club, Mareeba Lions Club, Mareeba Lioness Club and Shane Smith Builders. Fifteen students attended along with 5 staff, enabling students to have 2 fun-filled days participating in a wide variety of athletic and sporting activities where students worked on personal bests and reached new goals.

Congratulations goes out to Aurora Abbott for Highest Participation, Jarrek Morganson for Most Improved and Jahman Birchall-Gear for Leadership. The students are all keen for the Challenge Games again next year.

Last Thursday Luke Bradley, Matthew Heggie, Jack Kruse, Minjinarkle McInnes, Thomas Mylrea, Gullara McInnes and Tarris all travelled to Trinity Anglican School, White Rock and spent the whole day participating in the Far North Schools Chess Tournament, run by Gardiner Chess. Luke, Matthew, Jack and Minjinarkle won the Open Division (Division A) competition by 3.5 points. They competed against students from Year 7 through to Year 12 across Far North Queensland. All four of these students won five of their allotted seven games.

These students performed extremely well under the pressure of the competition. Thank you to Mr Gary Tudehope for accompanying the students. Congratulations to our Chess Teams!

JAKE ON HIS WAY TO NATIONALS Earlier this month Jake Bombardieri travelled to QSAC stadium in Brisbane to represent Peninsula Sport for 12 Years Boys Long Jump at the Queensland School Sports 2019 10-12 years Track and Field State Championships.

He performed well amongst a very competitive field of students from around Queensland.

He finished 4th with a new personal best jump of 5.11m beating his previous personal best by over 50cm. Based on his performance he was chosen to represent Queensland at the School Sports Australia 2019 10-12 years Track and Field Championships to be held in Darwin on 18-23 September 2019. We wish Jake all the best.

Don’t cane our farmers

NORTH Queensland LNP Senator, Susan McDonald has called for the city and bush to unite and fight for regional towns against tough new laws being proposed by the Queensland Labor Government.

The “Don’t Cane Our Farmers” campaign online, on social media and in newspapers highlights the threats the laws pose not just to farmers but to Queensland’s economy as a whole. The laws could be introduced as soon as this month.

Ms McDonald and Dawson MP, George Christensen, are inviting all Queenslanders to sign a petition backing farmers

and rejecting Labor’s prosperity-killing regulations.

Farmers have asked that at the very least, Annastacia Palaszczuk postpones the laws until further consultation and studies are completed.

It is estimated new laws relating to fertiliser sales reporting will increase the cost of a simple soil test from $120 to $1000.

Cattle farmers are also in Labor’s sights under the legislation, being subject to 157 standards even for properties up to 900km from the Great Barrier Reef.

Ms McDonald said the new

laws were the latest in a litany of Labor decisions that displayed a “breathtaking” lack of understanding and refusal to acknowledge the work already being done in the sector to improve farming methods.

“We have a State Government displaying breathtaking arrogance and an ignorance fed by armchair environmentalists which makes it tougher for the regions to thrive,” she said.

“We are seeing this attack on the regions in Labor’s continual restrictions on cane farming, cattle farming, vegetation management laws that put people and animals at greater risk of

Member for Cook calls for workable solutions on new reef laws

MEMBER for Cook Cynthia Lui (pictured) has suggested changes to the proposed reef regulation laws, that are currently before Queensland Parliament, to ensure the minimum agricultural standard in the Cape York catchment is not switched on as planned.

Ms Lui said she has asked the Minister for Environment and the Great Barrier Reef, Leeanne Enoch, to acknowledge the good water quality results from the Cape York region in the latest Great Barrier Reef Water Quality Report Card.

“This latest water quality science showed promising results for Cape York and showed the region had already met sediment and particulate nutrient targets,” she said.

“These are great results, and as such, I will be asking the Minister to consider not implementing the minimum practice agricultural standards for the Cape York catchment.

“The Palaszczuk Government is making decisions about the protection of the Reef based on quality peer-reviewed scien-

tific evidence, and now that this evidence has shown us that Cape York is meeting its targets, I think that should be reflected in the new regulations,” she said.

Ms Lui said that she is also urging the Minister to commit to making no further changes to the regulations for a set period of time.

“Even though future changes to the regulations would require consultation with industry, I think it’s important to give farmers and graziers the certainty of knowing the regulations will remain unchanged for five years,” she said.

“The agriculture industry and other bodies have raised concerns that the standards proposed in the reef regulations could be easily changed.

“We have heard that concern loud and clear, and to help ensure certainty for our farmers, I propose that the standards for agricultural activities in these laws should not be changed for at least five years.

“Only a Labor Government is committed to striking the right

bushfires, mining, commercial and recreational fishing, our timber industry, and port development.

“They do this supposedly in the name of the environment while feral pigs, wild dogs and feral cats breed up in national parks and wreak havoc on native wildlife and spread disease.

“With a state debt of $71 billion, Labor should be encouraging the wealth-producing regions and letting primary producers contribute as much as possible.”

Ms McDonald said the flowon effects of struggling primary

industries in Queensland would also be a major drain on cities.

“Bigger coastal centres like Townsville, Cairns, Mackay, Rockhampton and even Brisbane are major service hubs for thousands of farming operations, so any attack on farmers will hurt the cities,” she said.

“Farming is a natural part of life, and in many parts of Queensland it also means jobs on our farms, in our sugar mills, feedlots, in transport and at our ports.

“Not to mention the many other businesses that service the industry, such as mechanics, boilermakers, farm ma-

chinery dealerships and irrigation suppliers.

“Without a viable farming industry, thousands of businesses face financial ruin and this will cost jobs – not just in the agriculture sector.

“Farmers are excellent custodians of the environment – they have to be to stay viable – but this Government treats them like vandals.

“If you support farmers and what they add to our state, the only way to get real change is to change the government.”

TIPS WHEN BUYING RESIDENTIAL PROPERTY Whether it is your first home or an investment, the following are some tips for a smooth and stress free process when buying residential property...

1. Consult your preferred financial institution or mortgage broker to obtain pre-approval of finance so you know your price budget when looking for a property to buy.

2. Obtain legal advice before entering into a contract to ensure you understand your rights and obligations under the contract and that the contract correctly records the parties agreement reached during the negotiation process.

3. Make all necessary investigations and enquires for the property before entering into a contract.

This is especially important when buying a property at auction as you do not have any cooling off rights. In Queensland, a buyer is responsible for assessing property and making its own enquiries before entering into a contract. This may include land searches and council searches to ensure the building and any improvements on the land are compliant with council regulations. Unless the contract contains special conditions, you may have limited or no right to terminate under a standard contract based on search results obtained after a contract is signed.

4. If the contract is subject to a building inspection, immediately engage a building inspector to inspect the property as there may be time limitations under the contract for you to exercise any rights in the event you are not satisfied with the results of the inspection.

5. Arrange insurance cover for the property immediately after signing the contract as the property is at the buyer’s risk from 5pm on the first business day after the contract date, unless a contrary provision is contained within the contract.

6. Conduct a final inspection of the property on the morning of settlement to ensure the property is vacant (unless the contract provides for the continuation of an existing tenancy), is not damaged and/or items included in the sale are not removed from the date of entering into the contract to the settlement date.

What the article fails to mention is that the residential subdivision benefits from a legislative loophole that allows her to put future houses on new residential lots directly adjacent remnant rainforest, which wouldn’t be able to occur if the land in its undeveloped state was 5 hectares or more in area.

It’s interesting that a claimed environmentalist is happy to overlook the negative impacts of putting an additional 6 houses on the land, complete with cats and dogs and thinks that might somehow help to buffer the rainforest that is State Government mapped essential for the Kuranda Tree Frog (Endangered species), Tapping

RADF 2019-20 COMMUNITY GRANT ROUND The Regional Arts Development Fund (RADF) is a partnership between the Queensland Government and Mareeba Shire Council that promotes the role and value of arts, culture and heritage as key drivers of diverse and inclusive communities and strong regions.

Individuals, groups, not for profit organisations and arts and cultural companies within the Mareeba Shire Council area are now invited to submit applications for RADF 2019-20 Community Grants for arts, culture and heritage projects that build cultural capacity, cultural innovation and community pride. Projects in the priority areas of cultural tourism, public mural partnerships and youth arts engagement will be highly regarded. Applications must be submitted by 5pm Thursday 31 October, 2019.

2019 Allan Rockley Memorial Interschool Touch Football competition success COMPETITION in a Tableland interschool touch football competition wrapped up last week with teams from Tolga, Malanda and Mareeba victors.

More than 270 primary and secondary students participated in the 2019 Allan Rockley Memorial Interschool Touch Football Competition over an eightweek period.

State schools from Atherton, Kairi, Malanda, Mareeba, Millaa Millaa, Tolga, and Yungaburra participated along with primary schools were involved along with Mount Saint Bernard College, Herberton, St Joseph’s Catholic School, Atherton, and St Stephen’s Catholic College, Mareeba The senior division grand final was contested between Mareeba High School One team and MSB. Mareeba came away the victors, 19 to 9, with player of the final Mareeba’s Shaun Stephens.

St Stephen’s College and Malanda State High School played the intermediate grand final. Malanda won 10 to 5.

Thomas Cuda, St Stephen’s, was player of the final.

Malanda Eels and Tolga Tornadoes fought out the junior division, with Tolga victors 6 to 5. Player of the final was Malanda’s Riley Kuhn.

The Allan Rockley Memorial Trophy was awarded to the school with the best overall result in all divisions of the competition. Tolga was the primary school champion and MSB took out the honours in the secondary division.

More than 270 players and 23 teams competed in the 2019 Tablelands Interschool Touch Football Competition.

Competition convenor Therese Watson, Tableland 10-19 Years School Sport Group district secretary, thanked the Allan Rockley Memorial Fund for sponsoring the competition, the Atherton Touch Football Association for their support and teachers, coaches and volunteers referees.

“It was pleasing to see the improvement of the skill levels of the students throughout the competition. Many of the students particularly in the junior division hadn’t played a lot of touch football and it is a credit to the students’ hard work, dedication and involvement in this competition to be able to clearly notice how far they have progressed with their touch football abilities.”

Juniors praised for prominent season ANOTHER junior rugby league season came to a close last weekend with the Mareeba Gladiators junior presentation being held at Davies Park.

The junior presentations included all age divisions from under 6s to under 16s and was celebrating not only the season and the players performances, but also some standout volunteers and members of the club.

Club president Darrin Hastie was proud of the season and is looking forward to next season.

“It was another good year for the junior Gladiators,” he said.

“Our younger age groups are really thriving and pushing hard.

“The kids enjoyed the football and that’s the overall goal.”

The season gave the players a taste of premiership pedigree with the U14s fighting it out in the finals, and the U16s having a seat in the semi-finals.

The junior Gladiators also paid respect to the hidden cogs that keep the club running with one lifetime member being inducted, two lifetime supporters being honoured and two life players being recognised.

Teresa Brcko was a past secretary of the club and was inducted as a lifetime member for the continual support and love she has shown the club for her 10 year plus stint as a member.

Dorothy Hastie and Patrick King were honoured as lifetime supporters with the overwhelming love they have shown the club in their many years as supporters.

Dorothy fosters children and she brings them to play football and help them develop not only a strong bond with the game, but a strong bond with the players that they meet.

tea because she always has a cup of tea at the games,” Mr Hastie laughed.

Mr King is a lifelong supporter who has been attending home games for as long as President Mr Hastie can remember “Mr King has been attending games for as long as I can remember,” he said.

Jerry Henderson and Kyle Hastie have been recognised as lifelong players for not missing a season of junior football from U6s to U16s and were recognised for this impressive feat at the presentation.

With an impressive representative run for the juniors Mr Hastie is keen and looking forward to getting more kids playing and achieving their goals.

“We’re getting more and more interest for kids playing football,” he said.

“We had good football

played on the representative side with kids in the cairns comp and some down to Townsville and the Sunshine Coast.

“We are just trying to get the kids involved and improving their skills along with the coaches.”

The 2020 season will kick off in April and will feature a battle hardened and ready to rumble Mareeba Junior Rugby League club.

Heartbreak as Roosters fall in extra time Roosters Kobe Martin in Sunday’s epic semi final match.

THE Atherton Roosters’ 2019 season has come to a devastating end after they were beaten

in the Qualifying final 32-28 by defending premiers the Mossman-Port Douglas Sharks.

Both teams needed more than the allotted 80 minutes to separate themselves, as it was tied up

at 28 all at the end of regulation.

The Roosters couldn’t have asked for a better start, as they

crossed the line twice in the opening 20 minutes courtesy of tries to their front rower and

Graham Clark Jnr to jump out to a 12-0 lead.

A lead is never safe against an electric side like the Sharks however, as they scored three unanswered tries in quick succession to take the lead.

The Roosters refused to let the game get away from them, as Cairns District Rugby League veteran Reece Munster went over just before halftime to set up a 18-16 scoreline in favour of Atherton at the main break.

The Roosters’ second half started much like their first stanza, as they scored twice through Kobe Martin and Ned Blackman to create a healthy 12-point buffer.

Despite facing an uphill battle, Mossman-Port Douglas displayed their premiership mettle in the final stages of the match, scoring twice in the remaining ten minutes to lock the scores at 28 when the siren sounded at the 80-minute mark.

The Sharks carried that momentum into extra time, and were able to capitalise as Abbie Gibuma scored in the 89th minute to secure the win.

Their win sets up a clash in the CDRL grand final with the Innisfail Leprechauns, which will take place at Barlow Park this Sunday.

Bulls miss out of finals berth THE Mareeba Bulls Premiers Men’s side fell to Leichhardt FC over the weeked after they were defeated 2-0 away from home over the weekend.

It has been a tough couple

of weeks for the Mareeba side, as the out-of-form outfit suffered a 5-2 loss to Marlin Coast the game prior.

Their poor finish to the season means that they have

missed out on the finals starting this weekend, as Stratford’s draw with Edge Hill United ensured that they secured the fourth and final position in the post-season.

It is a disappointing end to what was a promising season for the Bulls, who had patches of brilliance throughout the year.

However inconsistency, in-

jury and an inability to build the necessary chemistry at the right times hurt their season when it mattered most.

There’s still plenty of positives to take away from the

season, and with 2019 having been the first season a number of these players have shared the field together, they’ll only get stronger in 2020.
