Lights shine bright WITH just seven more sleeps until Christmas Day, a record number of locals have embraced the Christmas spirit and spreading joy by lighting up their homes for all to enjoy.

Tracy Taylor, Steven Murray and their children Liam, Olivia and Chantelle of 250 Walsh Street entered the 2019 Mareeba Shire Christmas Light Competition and came away winners.

The family started lighting up their home in early November and spent six weeks perfecting their display. “We did it for the kids, we don’t have any family here, and by having the public stopping

and looking at the lights it makes them feel special, it’s something for them and they feel it’s magical,” Tracy said.  For a full list of winners and light displays to visit, turn to page 12.

A COMMUNITY garden has grown to life at Mareeba State High school after one passionate teacher took up the idea.

When year one teacher Skye Clarkson applied for a grant earlier in the year to start a small garden, she never imagined it would flourish into what it is today.

After the initial grant, Mrs Clarkson sought support and donations from numerous members of the community to help build their community garden.

With exterior help from volunteers and a few more grant applications the garden is now used as a facility to help students learn about healthy eating and the value of food.

“The purpose of the garden

is to educate the students on something they might not have experienced before,” Mrs Clarkson said.

“The students also learn life skills and learn about responsibility.

“Later on we hope to see this garden develop and more opportunities to come from it.”

Mrs Clarkson also hopes to see the students take the knowledge and experience they learn from the community garden into their own backyards.

The students are not only learning about the food being produced from the plants but also the plants themselves and how each one survives or thrives in certain conditions.

Michael Alba has helped

MSS with many projects over the years as a contractor, but this time, he volunteers his own time to help the students learn.

“Michael has not only helped the students with understanding the plants but also the food they produce,” Mrs Clarkson said.

“He has been teaching them all about the plants and crops that are growing in this garden.

“You can even see some students walking around now eating the produce.”

Mrs Clarkson would like to thank the numerous volunteers who have come in and helped with the garden along with all the kind donations they have received.

Noeline Ikin honoured for life’s work Noeline Ikin’s influence in northern Australia was farreaching and prominent, and it’s a legacy that has been rightly recognised in the form of a foundation that provides support to ensuring the prosperity of our region’s youth.

NOELINE Ikin is a name synonymous with the Tablelands and the Gulf of Carpentaria, and the enormous impact she had on those regions has been recognised with the launch of the Noeline Ikin Foundation.

Noeline tragically lost her battle to an aggressive brain tumour in 2017 at just 47 years of age, proving a massive blow for a number of rural Queensland communities who admired and adored her.

The official launch of the foundation was held at Skybury Coffee and Roastery last Thursday, and the foundation’s chairwoman Martine Care alluded to what their aim is as an organisation.

“The foundation is a joint partnership between the Gulf Cattleman’s Association, Northern Gulf Resource Management Group and Etheridge Shire Council,” she said.

“The foundation has three

goals, including gaining the power through higher education and using that power to advance our industries and livelihood, to lead by example and inspire and embody the common interests of the communities of North Queensland, and to build a future for northern regional Australia.

“Firstly we’re in the process of getting our Deductible Gift Recipients (DGR) status, so once we get that we will be fundraising so that we can start organising and implementing foundation projects,” Ms Care said.

Noeline was a former Etheridge Shire Councillor and LNP candidate who was widely known for nearly toppling political veteran Bob Katter in 2013; however, her work in helping form the Gulf Graziers’ Group and her time at the helm of the Northern Gulf Terrain Northern Resource Management group

New economic publication released HORTICULTURE contributed $528 million to the Tablelands economy in 2018-2019, a new economic publication reveals.

The value of the industry is one of the focal points of the Mareeba Chamber of Commerce’s 2019-20 Economic Snapshot.

Chamber president Joe Moro said the value of horticulture, which has risen some 45 per cent since the 2015 analysis, was no surprise given the growth of plantings in key commodities across the region.

“Horticulture is the predominant agriculture industry in the broader Mareeba region, and its flow on effects are significant,” Mr Moro said.

In the chamber’s publication, Department of Agriculture and Fisheries Mareeba-based principal horticulturist Dr Geoff Dickinson explains how the significant increase was largely due to the expansion and maturing of avocado, blueberry and citrus plantings within the region and

moderate to good market prices for a number of other key horticulture industries.

The avocado industry is the most valuable to the Tablelands ($173 million), with other notable industries including banana ($97 million), mango ($58 million), citrus ($56 million), blueberries ($43 million), papaya ($19 million) and potatoes ($18 million).

Agriculture is just one of the industries under the spotlight in the glossy, A4 publication which provides an overview of Mareeba’s economic achievements, strengths and opportunities.

“Retail, tourism and industry, together with agriculture, are the economic backbone of our town and surrounding areas, so it’s appropriate that as a chamber we take the opportunity to celebrate our strengths,” Mr Moro said.

“At the same time, the snapshot takes the opportunity to look at critical issues like a safe, efficient and reliable transport

network and long-term water security, and the urgent need to address these to ensure Mareeba continues along the development trajectory that it has enjoyed to date.”

The annual economic snapshot is a highlight of the economic footprint and major issues in the area. Copies of the publication are free and available now from selected outlets in Mareeba including The Express Newspaper.

QPS Commissioner Katarina Carroll visited the Tablelands recently to discuss with officers her plans to help combat crime throughout the state and in this region specifically.

QUEENSLAND Police Service (QPS) Commissioner Katarina Carroll was on the Tablelands recently to speak with officers on what her plans are moving forward for the state and the region and how it will help effectively combat crime.

Commissioner Carroll outlined a few key areas which she feels are having the greatest negative impact on Queenslanders, with domestic violence, mental health, youth justice and drug use of greatest concern.

“Domestic violence has been a real problem, with cases becoming more frequent in recent years,” she said.

“And with the delays that can be experienced with offic-

ers attending incidents, the use of body cameras to interview victims rather than written statements could prove far more effective in court proceedings.

“It cuts down red tape and I am confident it will be of enormous benefit to both the victims and QPS.” As it relates to mental health, youth justice and drug use, the interconnection of those societal problems are ones Commissioner Carroll aims to address immediately.

“Of the kids in care, in 40 per cent of cases their parents are on ice,” she said.

“So in my role it’s not solely about crime prevention, it’s also about working with the neces-

sary agencies to ensure we address mental health and treat it with the seriousness it deserves.”

Being from Mareeba originally herself, she knows firsthand the problems specific to this region; however she noted that Inspector Russell Rhodes and the Tablelands Patrol Group are doing a fantastic job keeping the community safe.

“Russell and the officers here on the Tablelands have a great system in place here, so I want to take this opportunity to thank them and I’m confident they’ll continue to keep up the good work,” she said.

reason behind the overwhelming success we see in 2019.

That is evidenced by the rise of the avocado industry, with it soaring to become the most valuable on the Tablelands as its worth to the region’s economy is $173 million – significantly up from $83 million in 2015.

The Tablelands is now Australia’s largest avocado growing region, and it is only expected to grow even further with half of the avocado trees less than five years old.

Other notable industries which are contributing immensely to the economy is the ever-reliable banana industry ($97 million), mango industry ($58 million), citrus ($56 million), blueberries ($43 million), papaya ($19 million) and potatoes ($18 million).

With that financial success comes jobs, another area which has seen a noteworthy uptick over the last four years.

“High-value horticulture crops such as avocado, banana, citrus and blueberries require high resource inputs and are also highly labour intensive which has brought many new permanent and seasonal jobs to the region,” Dr Dickinson said.

THE long-awaited Tablelands Agricultural Profile has been released which includes the 2018/2019 horticulture industry figures – signalling the first update since 2015.

The statistics are courtesy of the Department of Agriculture and Fisheries (DAF), and what they show is a significant increase in the agricultural sector to the tune of 45 per cent over the past four years.

The mammoth increase is in large part thanks to the booming production and consumption of the region’s avocados, blueberries and citrus varieties.

In addition, there are new fruit and vegetables which are quickly gaining traction in the region such as table grapes, which could prove crucial to the industry’s profit margin in the future.

“Horticulture is the Tablelands’ major agricultural sector, contributing $528 million to the Tablelands economy in 2018/2019,” DAF Mareebabased principal horticulturalist Dr Geoff Dickinson said.

“The significant increase of 45 per cent was largely due to the expansion and maturing of avocado, blueberry and citrus plantings within the region and moderate to good market prices for a number of other key horticulture industries.”

There were significant concerns held by a number of agricultural personnel about the demise of farming in Mareeba once the tobacco industry fell at the hands of deregulation.

KP Mango Comp receives first entries The KP Mango Competition is back for another year and The Express is pleased to announce that it has received its first entries.

Dimbulah’s Weston Hilditch came in last week with three mangoes, and currently leads the competition with a sizable 1.34kg fruit (pictured).

While it’s a strong start to this season’s proceedings, this year’s entrants will have big shoes to fill, with Kiara Cabassi winning the previous competition with a whopping mango weighing in at 1.606 kilograms.

The annual competition is

held courtesy of The Express Newspaper, FNQ Growers and Lindsay Rural, with a $500 prize being awarded to the winner, and a $300 and $200 prize being awarded to second and third place respectively.

To nominate all mangoes entered must be photographed on the scales clearly displaying its weight and brought into The Express office to be viewed by a member of the team. The competition runs until February 28, which is later than in year’s past due to the delay of the beginning of the mango season.

If nothing is rectified, subpar roads, stagnant economic growth and ageing infrastructure will become far more frequent.

One such person who is frustrated with the region’s health service is Atherton resident Granville Spencer, whose two visits to the Atherton Hospital’s emergency department in October were experiences he would rather forget.

“I had the misfortune of needing to use the Atherton Hospital emergency department on two occasions in October,” Mr Spencer said.

“The first was Sunday, October 6, where I arrived at the hospital and was forced to wait 30 minutes to see a triage nurse and after a further three hours of waiting, I decided to leave.

“They told me they were extremely busy and only had two doctors working at the time.”

Mr Spencer said he proceeded to ask why there were only two doctors on call and that he was notified that it was for budgetary purposes.

Mr Spencer said he went through a similar experience on Tuesday, October 15.

“On this occasion, I hadn’t seen the triage nurse for more

than an hour,” he said.

“Again I asked why and this time they said they only had one doctor on duty.

“Who is responsible for this train wreck, is it the hospital board or the health minister who I have no confidence in?

“The staff levels need to be rectified immediately as we are in an area where no medical centre is open after hours.

“The government should be totally embarrassed about this but they don’t seem to care – I hope they know Queensland exists north of the Sunshine Coast.

“Even though it is said to be an emergency department there is no sense of urgency.”

When Antonia Gallo was just eight years old, she set sail with her family from the shores of Calabria bound for Australia where she would write her own history over the next 69 years.

Her memoir, which took 16 years to write, documents a life that stretches back to a childhood of hard times, little money and acclimatising to a vastly different country and culture.

Mrs Gallo started writing her memoir as a gift for her family comprising four children, 11 grandchildren and four great grandchildren; however it was only this year that she decided to publish in response to encouragement from her neighbour, Patterson Ngwira.

Mr Ngwira said that after reading Antonia’s memoir he felt very strongly that her story was a remarkable one and needed to be shared.

Horticultural industry needs inland road and rail route xxxxx Well-respected educator and St Stephen's principal Ida Pinese has made the decision to retire after 45 years in education.

Respected principal retires after 45 years in education ONE of Mareeba’s most respect educators Ida Pinese has decided to call it a day on her career after having worked in the industry for the better part of 45 years.

Mrs Pinese, who has been a deputy principal and principal at Mareeba’s St Stephen’s Catholic College for the past 13 years, spoke glowingly about her time at the school and in the profession.

“It is said that only the brave should teach,” she said.

“After 45 years in the teaching profession, in a variety of roles, I believe this phrase is equally applicable to those who take on the challenge of becoming a principal or a school leader.

“Teachers and principals have the capacity to inspire students and assist colleagues to aspire to become leaders.

“Much is expected of those who take up leadership positions in schools and in education broadly.

“Teaching and being a principal cannot be just a job; it much be a vocation and a passion, otherwise you cannot and will not have longevity.”

Mrs Pinese noted that she has seen many changes to education over her 45-year career.

“My first placement was at Stanthorpe State High School – a school in a rural setting with approximately the same number of students as St Stephen’s,” she said.

“There were no fans or airconditioners, no photocopiers or computers, no interactive white boards and no mobile phones or social media.

“What has not changed, however, is the privilege of teaching our young people, of being invigorated and inspired by them and of making a positive difference in their lives.

“My passion for teaching was inspired by the Sisters of Mercy who taught me at Mount St Bernard College in my senior years.

“They have also been the role models for my style of servant leadership.”

Whilst her career has been one filled with many highlighted, Mrs Pinese pointed to her time at St Stephen’s as some of her most rewarding throughout her time as an educator.

“It is not often that one is involved with the formation of a new school,” she said.

“I have St Stephen’s and the Foundation Principal, Gerry Simon, to thank for this rewarding experience over the past 13

years, with the last seven as its principal.

“For me, the transition of this college from a new school to a well-established school, which punches above its weight, has been a labour of love.

“I liken it to raising a child.

“Students, it has been an honour to be your principal, to celebrate your achievements in a variety of contexts, to have empathy and compassion when things aren’t going as well as they should be, to guide and mentor you on your journey to adulthood and to share your many stories.

“Thank you for enriching my life – my time at St Stephen’s will always be a treasured memory.”

Mrs Pinese said the decision to retire has not been an easy one.

“There is sadness at leaving St Stephen’s, but also excitement at the next phase of my life, with more time for my family, including my husband who has patiently supported me in my role,” she said.

“I am grateful for the support I have received from so many people from different walks of life, many also present today, to effectively carry out my role.

“St Stephen’s is a great

school, with dedicated and committed staff, supportive families and wonderful students.

“I thank you for your kind words and best wishes and wish you all the very best for the future and know that you will extend a very warm welcome to the new principal, Ms Manders, in 2020.”

FAR North Queensland’s leading horticultural group wants a reliable, safe and cost-effective inland road and rail route connecting the region with capital cities.

FNQ Growers represents more than 300 fruit and vegetable growers across the region and is calling on the state and federal governments to continue investing in road and rail transport in Queensland.

Chair Joe Moro said the majority of the region’s produce was trucked south to wholesale markets in Brisbane, Sydney, Melbourne and Adelaide, along the coastal route, at a significant cost to the producer.

“With horticultural production in the region expected to grow by up to 40 per cent in the next few years, freight movements will become even more critical,” Mr Moro said.

“Already, freight movers are predicting a shortage of truck availability to meet predicted demand in three to five years.”

North Queensland’s alterna-

tive to National Highway One (Bruce Highway) is the inland route, part of which is known as the Hann Highway.

The Federal Liberal and National Governments committed an additional $40 million in May this year to complete sealing works on the Hann Highway.

Mr Moro said the road formed part one of the most important freight networks in Australia, in particular, as a link to the Inland Rail, the largest freight rail infrastructure project in Australia.

Toowoomba is set to play a key role in the project.

“The road-rail route delivers enormous productivity benefits to our growers by reducing transit times and providing greater service reliability between regional centres and capital cities,” Mr Moro said.

“This is not only relevant for our growing region in Far North Queensland, but for other horticultural regions like Bowe, Ayr and Bundaberg, who also stand to benefit.”

Safe hands

SOON Mareeba will no longer be home to, in my humble opinion, its greatest ever educator of secondary school students.

Many past students of Mareeba State High School and St Stephen’s Catholic College, their parents and the wider community will, no doubt, have stored memories of a committed and dedicated teacher, Mrs Ida Pinese.

Similarly, her teaching colleagues in this town over the years, from 1980 till the present day, will have their recollections of time on staff with her. I am fortunate to have taught with her since her first appointment here, forty years ago.

Since 2013, Mrs Pinese has been the principal of St Stephen’s Catholic College and under her stewardship it has grown from a small school with less than 100 students, to one with an attractive campus, wide-ranging learning centres, over 500 students and a fine reputation. It is to her credit that she did this all with grace, never faltering in her capacity to support students and staff and instil expectations of pride in oneself and respect for others.

Never could this have

been foreseen. Mrs Pinese was a well-respected classroom teacher at Mareeba High, specialising in Senior Accounting and Economics, Junior Business and Typewriting (later Computer Studies) and occasionally Mathematics. But the seeds were there, waiting to germinate— if an opportunity arose. And thankfully for our community that situation did arise.

Mrs Pinese brought to her new role as a school leader an incredible blend of capabilities: deep knowledge of curriculum, top management and organisational skills, communication skills both written and verbal, and willingness to work hard and never slacken. As a Principal in a faith-based school, she shone in her role as “servantleader”…a compliment from Father Robert Greenup at the final College liturgy and assembly last Friday.

Mrs Pinese’s empathy and love of students was always evident as she made it her rule to know the name of every student, even as the College grew in size. She never wavered in requiring high standards of decency, a dress code--and was not averse to bending over to pick up a stamp-sized piece of litter in the playground.

(Litter is a rarity at St Ste-

phen’s.) She took every occasion to demonstrate to her students and staff the evident pride she felt in them.

Mrs Ida Pinese retires from the teaching profession with record of outstanding achievement. She has enriched many lives over the years. I am certainly blessed to have worked with her longer than any other in a profession we both love. A dear friend, a fine teacher and exceptional Principal.

The failure of the KurWorld Eco Resort due to a veto applied by the Department of Transport and Main Roads highlights the fact that the Kuranda Range Road is now officially the most limiting factor in the further development of business opportunity in any area west of the range. There can be no question that any future development of sufficient size to trigger referral to the Department of Transport and Main Roads and which will increase the traffic load on this road will face the same veto and will not proceed.

Supported by Leichhardt MP, the Hon Warren Entsch and organisations such as Enterprise North, Advance Cairns, RDA FNQ&TS, Cairns Chamber of Commerce and a number of other prominent organisations in north Queensland, the Far North Queensland Regional Organisation of Councils (FNQROC) which comprises 13 member Councils covering 18% of Queensland, took a delegation to Canberra two weeks ago, seeking support for $21 million from State and Federal Governments for a strategic assessment

of service requirements, preliminary evaluation and business case on the Kuranda Range Road, in order to drive the message home that the Kuranda Range Road is the most important transport corridor in North Queensland serving Cape York Peninsula, the lower Gulf and the Atherton Tablelands.

The Department of Transport and Main Roads has acknowledged this road is operating at beyond its design capacity and as a result is an impediment to the conduct of enterprise and regularly impacting the daily commute of people travelling to and from work, medical appointments and airline travel.

If work was to begin on the four-laning of this road today, it would be between 10 and 15 years before the job is complete. The challenge is for government to recognise that within that timeframe this road presents a looming economic disaster.

It is self-evident that some government, some day, will have to accept responsibility for this parlous situation and have the courage to make a decision to begin the process of saving our community from economic ruin.

AS Christmas draws near I like to reflect on my favourite story of the Christmas Truce in 1914 – the Battle of Flanders.

It was just five months after the outbreak of war in Europe when Christmas was approaching in 1914. The constant soaking rain gave way to frost, and the battlefields of Flanders were blanketed with snow. After fierce fighting the sounds of the battlefield were replaced with “A Silent Night” as the Germans broke into song and the British reciprocated as a gesture of peace and goodwill.

Soon after, the two op-

posing forces put down their weapons and emerged from their trenches, crossing no-mans land, calling out “Merry Christmas” in their enemies native tongues, and began exchanging gifts of cigarettes and puddings.

Who would of thought that the birth of a child 2000 years ago would have such a heartfelt impact on opposing enemies during a world war.

Christmas is like that – it can set all our differences aside.

It is a time we can forget about the stresses of life, spend time with family and friends, enjoy sports and leisure and go fishing and

camping.

I’d like to wish everyone a Merry Christmas and a safe, healthy, prosperous new year – and not to forget, the reason for the season. Look forward to working with you all in the year 2020.

I would like to thank all of our readers, those who have chosen The Express to promote their business locally and all of our business associates for their continued support. Without you we would simply not be here.

2019 has flown by. We remember those who have been affected by floods and fires and our thoughts and

The Mareeba Lioness Club has been busy all year fundraising and helping in the community as much as we can. Mareeba Lioness Club celebrates 40 years as a club next year and we need to remember the wonderful work that has been done over those years by ladies in the community. We still have a couple of ladies that are charter members and are still very

active in any projects that we have. Our Pensioners Morning Tea and Bingo every month is still popular and the ladies supplied a beautiful lunch in November for all the Pensioners that attend, to finish off the year, and we are looking forward to recommencing in February. The Pink Ribbon Garden Party was a resounding success again this year thanks to the generosity of the community ,and a great donation was again donated to the Cancer

Council in Cairns. All money raised stays in the local area and helps to maintain the Marilyn Mayo Clinic. Reflecting back over the year, we give thanks to everyone that helped us over the year and look forward to be back out in the community serving in any way we can in the New Year. the Fire and rescue Service (FRS), the Rural Fire Service (RFS) and the State Emergency Service (SES), Emergency Management (EM) and supporting our Volunteer groups providing emergency response to Queensland such as the Volunteer Marine Rescue (VMR) and Surf Life Saving Queensland (SLSQ).

QFES is one department with many services, many capabilities and partners.

Our collaborative approach across the service and with our key stakeholders allows us to deliver improved safety outcomes for the community.

In 2019 we have seen many and varied incidents attended by our department across the Western Command which takes in the Southern Tablelands areas of Ravenshoe, Millaa Millaa through to Malanda, Atherton and Yungaburra to Mareeba and Dimbulah and extends all the way to Cooktown in the north.

There has been a major focus again this year on the Bushfire Season which commenced early due to the onset of warm and dry conditions reducing the amount of time available for hazard reduction burns and putting

It is a time where we can spend quality time with our loved ones, our families and our friends.

Everyone celebrates the festive season in different ways. I personally will be looking forward to spending time at my farm in the Tablelands with my family, extended family and friends.

I always like to pay particular mention at this time of the year to those in our community who forgo spending time with their loved ones, their families and their friends.

I am talking about our

wonderful doctors, nurses, emergency services personnel who will no doubt be working or on-call as well as the volunteers in our community who will give up their time to ensure those less fortunate also experience a little Christmas cheer. They are the true heroes in my eyes.

Many people travel at this time of the year and homes may be left unattended for a period of time, so home security is a must. We also encourage everyone who may be travelling these holidays to drive to the road conditions, leave earlier and slow down if needed.

If road conditions dictate otherwise then travel at an appropriate speed limit.

Speed signs are not a target for you to reach or exceed.

It is better to arrive a little late then not at all. We also want to remind the community to not drink or drug drive for everyone’s safety this includes our waterways.

One of the worst ‘calls for service’ for a police officer is having to tell a family of a tragedy, whether that be due to a horrific road crash or some other incident.

Season’s Greetings IN my home town of Cloncurry, Warren Losberg was president of St Vincent de Paul.

After Church on Sunday we members took cigarettes and newspapers to the old pensioners.

As a lad of 17, Warren told me, “It’s not the papers and durries – the old blokes just want someone to talk to – we can give them an hour or so, hey?”

Father Carrol’s presbytery’s rickety stairs had given

up the guard rail. He had only one chair which he attempted to give to me. At 6 pm he said “Got to leave now and feed these kids”. A dozen kids from the no-hoper Copper Mine Creek mob was staring up at us. He explained “They don’t get fed much, I feed them”.

“But you’ve got no money, you’re the poorest person I know”.

His answer “Well if I don’t feed them, they don’t eat”.

One of the toughest politi-

I, like Clyde Cameron, whilst my mother died nearly 40 years ago, still cannot talk about her.

The thought that my mother could be dead – gone forever – is a burden I could not bear.

And if some modern scientists say my beliefs are simple and primitive, then might it be suggested that these beliefs are much more plausible than their explanation – that we descended from a firecracker.

Mr Borzi opened the Centre as Chairman on 14 October, 1995 and will now play a role in the celebrations of the Centreâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s 25th Anniversary in 2020 as Chairman.

The Centre is a permanent testimony of the community and continues to be a monument to Mickâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s contribution to community life in Mareeba.

CHRISTMAS provides an opportunity for us all to stop and reflect on our accomplishments over the past 12 months, be them triumphs, learnings or challenges.

The chamber has been busy advocating across a number of key issues that are vital to our town’s continued viability. By far, a safe, efficient and reliable transport system continues to be one of the greatest challenges faced by our community as a whole, for our roads and the condition thereof, impact on us all. We have been strong proponents of the need for government to take firm action now to ensure the road system we have today, ad-

equately caters for the expected exponential growth to come. A secure, affordable and safe long-term water supply is critical, as our half a billion-dollar plus agricultural industry screams out for more water. It’s an issue that also continues to confront government at all levels, but one that we, as a chamber, will continue to lobby for until a tangible solution is reached and delivered. This past year the chamber has made a concerted effort to promote tourism, by carrying out a survey of local businesses to quantify the value of tourism. We spoke loudly when we called out the Member for Cook for reneging on an

election promise and moving the Mareeba-based electorate office to Cairns – outside the Cook Electorate. We are raising attention to the issue of rogue saltwater crocodiles inhabiting the Mitchell River system, impacting on many people who rely on these rivers and tributaries for domestic, farming, recreational and tourism purposes. Much of the work outlined above will continue into the New Year and beyond. I take this opportunity to wish the Mareeba Shire community a safe and happy Christmas and wonderful start to 2020.

1. Line your 9” Square Tin with parchment paper.

2. Chop up your Twix and shortbread into bitesize pieces, and add to a large bowl with your mini marshmallows and raisins/glace cherries.

3. In a pan, add your golden syrup and unsalted butter and melt on a medium heat, till your butter has melted.

4. Take your pan off the heat, and add in your chocolate, and stir together until smooth. If the chocolate doesn’t quite melt, put it back on the heat for a few seconds and stir.

5. Let the mixture cool for a couple of minutes, and then pour into your bowl.

6. Stir the mixure together, and then pour into the tin.

7. Add any extra Twix on top, and then leave to set in the fridge until solid.

Young star shines in Las Vegas THE Mareeba United Football Club’s Express Six-a-side season came to a climax on Friday night when four divisional grand finals were played.

In the men’s A-grade favourites Mareeba Mazda came

up against a determined Friggers team who once went ahead maintained their momentum to cause an upset by beating Mareeba Mazda 5-4.

The Men’s B-grade also proved a tight affair with the

Jumbi’s going down 5-7 to the winners Biggest Cakes.

The ladies A-grade saw another close match as both teams wanted an early Christmas present but it was the Golden Bulls who prevailed over Red Hot

Chilli Peppers 4 goals to 2.

The ladies B-grade true to their name the Intimidators came out fighting and scored a close 8-7 victory over the Sparklers.

A YOUNG Cape York bull rider has traversed the world after competing at the Mini Bull riding World Series in Las Vegas.

Travis Koolatah was selected to compete against talent from all over the globe and was the first indigenous Australian to

compete at the World Series.

Travis was presented a buckle and jacket by former PBR champion Cody Hart.

Atherton top of ladder after win

ATHERTON have moved to the top of the Cricket Far North ladder 2-day competition after a 1st Innings and outright win over Cassowary Coast at Loder Park on Saturday.

Atherton resumed their innings 2-94 with Paul Nasser 22 and Chris Adams 21. Paul Nasser continued his purple patch of form belting 63 runs off 43 balls to top score for Atherton with 85 off 93. Pauls total included seven 4's and four 6's and featured a 60 run partnership with Chris Adams (35) and 67 run partnership with Tom Boorman (24). Atherton added 132 runs off 15 overs before declaring their innings 6-226 with a lead of 88 runs.

Opening bowler Seppe Barletta did early damage taking the

first three wickets to have Cassowary 3-41 before the spinners came on and tied up the batsmen. Michael Salerno gave a spin bowling exhibition taking 5-18 off eleven overs. Dan Parnell was rewarded with a wicket and Seppe picked up the final wicket to finish the match and claim an outright win.

Cricket now takes a break for christmas returning January 4, 2020 when Atherton v Barron River at Crathern Park.

Congratulations to Michael Salerno on recent selection in the Queensland Country team.

This will be Michael's 9th Championship with the Brahman's who will be competing at the Australian Country Championships in Toowoomba in January 2020.

MAREEBA seconds dominated their second day of play against United at their home ground on the weekend.

After an impressive batting showing in their first innings Mareeba looked confident with the ball and succeeded in getting United out for 148 runs with Tyson Brown taking 5 wickets for a measly 28 runs.

Seeing their chance Mareeba decided to put some more runs on the board before the weather saw the game close.

Mareeba seconds came out with a huge win over United for their last game of the year and are looking into the New Year.

Mareeba thirds also had a win over the thirds counterpart of United at Griffiths park.

Mareeba decided to bat first

after winning the toss and opening pair Paul Moss and Brendan Falvo put up an impressive 60 runs between them to give Mareeba a solid start.

A batting order collapse however slowed Mareebas runs and had them 9/144 at the end of their allotted overs.

United was chasing down a relatively low score but failed to reach it before the allotted overs after some impressive bowling by Mareeba to keep United in check. United failed to reach their total and finished on 8/113 after 35 overs.

Last fortnight young Angus Campman helped his Tier 3 junior side to a win over Mulgrave with an unbeaten 107 not out to bring his side to 6/188 with Mulgrave coming in short at 7/139.
