Nell’s 90th celebration

Family and friends gathered at Mareeba RSL last Wednesday to help Nell George celebrate her 90th birthday.

Mrs George, along with her husband Colin, daughters Lynelle and Melanie, six grandchildren and six great-grandchildren, as well as other family members and friends, enjoyed lunch to mark the occasion.

Many travelled long distances to attend the celebration including Melanie who now lives in Bali and Lynelle who now lives in Darwin.

Melanie said her mum was “always looking out for other people”.

“Mum and dad have always given so much of themselves,” she said.

“It’s been a really great example for me, my sister and my brother. It’s all about paying it forward and they’ve never expected anything in return. They’ve always been generous with their time.”

Nell is still heavily involved with the anglican church in Mareeba and attends twice a week.

A dress maker in her prime, Nell loved sewing and would make clothes for her children.

She moved to Mareeba in 1967 when husband Colin was transferred here from Townsville for work.

In 1990 tragedy struck when Nell’s only son Peter passed away. In her selfless style, Nell nursed him full time for the last six months of his life.

“They’ve had some hardships in their life,” said Melanie.

“But they’ve always looked out for other people and are always helping other people. They still pick people up and take them to church every week.”

Nell still lives independently in the home she raised her family in. Husband Colin turns 90 next year.

Around 60 people attended her birthday celebration which included a cake with a sewing machine on top.

New sign set to boost Mareeba’s economy

A joint initiative between Mareeba Heritage Centre and the Mareeba Chamber of Commerce is aiming to get tourists to stay a little longer in the town and in turn boost the local economy.

The two groups have collaborated on a new sign that encourages visitors to stop at the information centre before discovering more of what Mareeba has to offer.

Chamber president Joe Moro said he hopes that in time it will reap benefits for the town.

“The idea is to get as many visitors that are coming to the area to spend a bit of time in the Mareeba town, not only looking at touristy things but using the services that are provided by the town,” he said.

“I think over time we will see how successful it will be, but I think it will be. The idea is to promote Mareeba and enhance the visitors staying a little bit longer in the town and spending a few more dollars.”

The new sign was erected on Saturday afternoon.

Kayaker dies in Malanda rapids A 37-year-old Sydney man was found dead on Friday after an all day search and rescue operation near Malanda.

The man was with four friends kayaking the North Johnson River at around 1pm on Thursday when his kayak became wedged in rocks as he was travelling down a section of rapids.

A distress beacon was activated by the group and a search and rescue operation commenced.

Emergency services personnel were dropped to the location yesterday by the Rescue 510 helicopter, with the same helicopter retrieving the four other members of the group this

Endoscopy coming to Mareeba Hospital Locals will soon be able to receive endoscopy procedures at Mareeba Hospital.

Mareeba Hospital is one step closer to being able to perform endoscopy procedures after investment funds were approved last week for the service.

Cairns and Hinterland Hospital and Health Service (CHHHS) Board released a statement last week to say a building feasibility study has been completed and has identified building works that will provide additional space for recovery after a

patient has their procedure.

Member for Cook Cynthia Lui welcomed the news and said it would mean less travelling for locals.

“As more Queenslanders get their gastrointestinal endoscopies done, we need more space for patients to recover comfortably,” she said. “Funding for these necessary building works is in addition to the $3.8 million the Palaszczuk Government have committed to

the Cairns and Hinterland region as part of our Endoscopy Action Plan.

“Having an expanded recovery space means our Mareeba residents can access endoscopy services closer to home without having to make the journey to Cairns.”

Executive Director Rural and Remote Services Gabrielle Honeywood from CHHHS said the board was looking closely at what ser-

vices can be delivered closer to home for those living on the Tablelands, a move that was well received by members of the Save Mareeba Hospital Services Group.

Ms Honeywood met with the group last Friday to assure them that services at the hospital were growing and developing.

“Due to the National Bowel Cancer Screening expansion, the demand

for endoscopy services is expected to continue to increase by 5.7 per cent per year over the next 10 years,” she said.

“This initiative will help to meet this increase in demand for endoscopy services for the Mareeba community.”

CHHHS has been criticised in the past for delivering more services to the Atherton Hospital than to Mareeba.

A Mareeba man’s murder will be the focus of an event tomorrow night in Cairns that will shed light on the behind the scenes work of dedicated police officers.

Behind the Crime will give members of the public the opportunity to hear from a lead CIB Detective, a Forensic Officer and Principal Crown Prosecutor who successfully prosecuted Cape York graziers, Dianne Wilson-Struber and

Stephen Struber for the murder of Bruce Schuler, on their vast Palmerville Station in 2012.

It is also understood that the missing man was the first of the group to attempt to travel down this section of rapids.

Members of the Malanda community were helping search and rescue crews locate the man but late on friday afternoon his body was found in Woroonooran National Park.

Police will prepare a report for the coroner.

“I was surprised and

honoured,” she said. “I wasn’t expecting to win as the person I was up against was wonderful.”

Mrs Williams will go to the State Finals in August.

The winner then goes on to compete against other states – then the overall winner of Australia goes to Texas.

“It would be great to get as many people as possible involved in their local agricultural show,” she said.

“The shows started with people taking their animals.

There’s a lot more to it than rides and we can’t lose touch with that.”

Health concerns after Dengue Fever case

A Mareeba woman has been confirmed as suffering from Dengue Fever sparking health precautions in the town.

Tropical Public Health Services (Cairns) has confirmed the first locallyacquired case of dengue in Far North Queensland this year.

Acting Director, Tropical Public Health Services (Cairns) Dr Roscoe Taylor said a Mareeba woman recently presented with dengue-like symptoms and laboratory tests have now confirmed the virus.

It is the first locally-acquired case of dengue fever to be recorded in Far North Queensland since February 2017 and the first in Mareeba since 2003.

“While we are now in the dry season, the heavy, prolonged wet season has resulted in higher numbers of mosquitoes being around,” Dr Taylor said.

“Everyone needs to do their part and take action to eliminate mosquito breeding sites on their properties such as plant pot bases holding water, and to protect themselves from mosquito bites, especially young children and babies.”

“People should protect themselves by using a longacting surface spray (cockroach surface spray) in dark areas underneath furniture

inside their homes. You can also: • Install insect screens that are in good working order in your home and office. If not, sleep under a mosquito net day and night.

• Tip out water from containers weekly, or dry store containers under cover and discard rubbish properly.

Mosquitoes breed in containers that hold water.

• Wear light-coloured, long-sleeved shirts and long pants, and use personal insect repellent containing DEET (di-ethyl toluamide) or Picaridin. DEET and Picaridin are safe for use by pregnant women. Always follow the manufacturer’s directions. Repellents usually only protect against mosquito bites for up to four hours.

• Other mosquito protection devices such as electric zappers and mosquito coils may also be used, but they are less effective than long acting surface spray.

Dengue causes fever with severe headaches, muscle and joint pains, and other symptoms may include a rash, vomiting and diarrhoea. Anyone with dengue-like symptoms should see a doctor immediately to be tested for dengue.

Dial-a-Doctor service suspended

Mobile medical service Dial-A-Doctor has been out of action for the past few weeks on the Tablelands while a local doctor shortage has affected the business.

General Manager Mike Dale said they were actively seeking a replacement doctor for the after-hours service and hoped to be back up and running “very shortly”.

“Our intention is to keep going but the challenge is to get doctors working in the after-hours role,” he said.

“We’re doing everything we can to recruit doctors but the recent changes to legislation has made it difficult.”

Dial-A-Doctor commenced operation on the Tablelands 12 months ago and the bulk-billed service has been well received across the region.

But Mr Dale said the position is usually held by a doctor as a “secondary” job which he said makes the service “sporadic”.

Dial-a-Doctor is currently unavailable on the Tablelands but should be back up and running soon.

employees of their service.

Understand soil health at one day workshop EXPLORE how your soil actually works in the paddock at a one-day soil health workshop.

Being held on Wednesday June 20 in Mutchilba, the workshop will explore soil chemistry, soil biology and soil structure using hands on practical activities.

How all these fit together to create a healthy soil and how to assess soil health practically in the paddock will all be explored during the day.

The workshop will focus on how soils work, what is soil health and why it is important and assess soil health in the field.

The workshop will be presented by Kristy Youman, who works with David Hardwick at Soil Land Food, an agricultural consultancy specialising in sustainable and ecological agriculture.

Time to split state in two?

A proposal to create new state of North Queensland has been around for decades but momentum is gathering among fed-up Far Northerners who attended the ‘Boot Brisbane’ forum last week.

The first State of Origin match for the year did not deter more than 80 supporters from packing the Brother’s club boardroom in Cairns to hear a decisive argument for the north to break away from a decadent south east corner.

A southern border following the Tropic of Capricorn north of Rockhampton would ultimately foster great prosperity for a languishing North Queensland economy.

Katters Australian Party parliamentary representatives, Robbie Katter, Shane Knuth, Nick Dametto and newest recruit Senator Fraser Anning joined Member for Kennedy Bob Katter who held the floor with compelling economic data compiled by Cairns economist Bill Cummings.

Mr Katter said necessary infrastructure had been neglected by successive state and federal governments and there was no alternative but to allow North Queenslanders to govern themselves because much of the

State’s economy was generated north of Rockhampton.

“The State Government has committed $7.5 billion - $2 billion for pleasure domes and $5.5 billion for yet another tunnel in Brisbane.

“There’s just no way that a budget of $54 billion can take a hit of $7.5 billion and have something left over for the rest of the state and the further away from Brisbane then the less money you will get. While they’ve got $5 billion to improve their transportation systems, four years ago we did not get a single cent for road improvement in North Queensland except for a roundabout at Port Douglas.”

Mr Katter accused the governments of failing to understand industry and economic development in the North.

“You are not allowed to use a drop of water for irrigation in North Queensland except if you make outrageous, corrupt payments to political parties – that’s the only way you’ll ever get a drop of water in North Queensland for irrigation and yet, if North Queensland were a separate country we would be the wettest country on earth.

“We’ve got these huge resources and we’re not allowed to use them so we can’t develop.

“We’re not allowed to dredge the Port of Cairns; one of most significant tourist destinations in the world.

Don’t expect any new dams from the State Government for the Tablelands anytime soon.”

Former Mulgrave Councillor Ron Crew explained how Cairns and the hinterland agricultural industry lost $35 million a year due to a lack of infrastructure projects.

“The government won’t agree to dredge the port in a reasonable manner, yet we have the largest population adjacent to any port in northern Australia and agriculture can’t expand,” Mr Crew said.

The creation of a new state was a simple exercise according to Townsville barrister Peter Raffles.

Mr Raffles cited a High Court case in 1978 where the approval of a majority of electors for surrendering a State and the acceptance by the Commonwealth is necessary.

“The State Parliament can do it and no referendum is required,” he said.

New members a boost to Rotary Mareeba Rotary is now two members stronger after Yolonde Entsch and Tracey Beikoff were inducted at last week’s meeting.

Last week the Petersen Creek Volunteers and the ladies of the Soroptimist International Tropical Tablelands Club laid a plaque and planted a Kauri pine in honour of Bob Stringer and his contribution to the Yungaburra area’s green environment.

Bob flew for the RAAF during World War II and received the French Legion of Honour Medal.

Bob and his wife Vivienne supported the Soroptimist Tropical Tablelands Club as

they attended meetings and fundraised for local causes.

Sadly, Bob passed away in July 2017.

Bob’s wife expressed gratitude at the gesture and stated that he would have felt honoured. A cheque was presented to the Yungaburra Landcare Group to continue their work of providing a safe walk along Petersen Creek. This gives a unique opportunity to spot wildlife including platypus, birdlife and the Lumholtz tree- kangaroo.

Police have renewed their appeal for information as part of investigations into a fatal hit and run crash in Weipa early Saturday morning.

20-year-old Michael Bowden was fatally injured after he was struck by a vehicle on Northern Avenue around 3am. Detectives are hoping somebody in the Weipa township has information that could assist the investigation and help get closure for Mr Bowen’s family. Police would particularly like to speak with anyone who travelled along Northern Avenue between

midnight and 3am Saturday.

Anyone who may have been driving in the Weipa township around that time and who has a dashcam is also urged to come forward.

Members of the community are being reminded to be on the lookout for any vehicles which may have been freshly damaged.

Dazzling heights for drone winners

Drones and short stories have an unlikely alliance but for Mareeba State High School student Gullara McInnes they have placed her in the spotlight for an exciting career.

On Wednesday, Gullara, 15, a law student and her two team members, Vanessa Heggie and Alyssa AbelMasterson took out the Drone Tournament competition held at Trinity Beach State School.

A field of 28 teams from regional schools, including four from Mareeba were required to first code their drones then take place in games involving ships and whales drawn on large canvass sheets.

Whales had to be identified by on-board cameras for species and their size and weight had to be calculated by the students.

The drones tested their marksman skills with cannon and grabbing claws followed by aerobatic manoeuvres where each craft had to find its way through obstacle courses using mobile phones as a control.

Gullara trained 11 members of the school contingent with her own drone in

the weeks prior to the event.

“I am donating the prizemoney I won at the tournament for the school to buy drones and start up a drone club such as other schools have,” Gullara said.

Not to be outdone by aeronautical science, Gullara realised she had only a few hours left one day in April to enter in a national poem and short story competition.

On the way to school in the bus from her family’s small farm east of Mareeba she penned a short story to enter in the Write4Fun competition.

It was submitted in unedited format.

A letter arrived for her at the end of May advising she had been placed as a finalist with 14 others out of 10,000 entries received in the short story and poem categories from across the nation.

The year ten STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics) student has aspirations to join the Air Force drone unit which has only one indigenous female member.

But even better she says: “I would like one day to pilot a fighter jet.”

Youth Forum informs strategy Fifty high school students came together recently for Tablelands Regional Council’s (TRC) Youth Forum.

Opened by Deputy Mayor Katrina Mellick (Spies), the day began with specialist speakers — Nicole Gibson, Trav Munro and Yvette Adams – who inspired our young Tablelanders.

“It was great to see how the students related to and built connections with the different speakers,” said Councillor Mellick.

“In the afternoon, the students divided into groups lead by the key note speakers, TRC Councillors

and Vocational Partnership Group (VPG) staff, and fantastic ideas and suggestions were shared.

All the great information from this forum and last year’s Youth Sector Symposium will inform the establishment of a working group to develop TRC’s Youth Strategy.”

The day followed a hugely successful ‘Night of Inspiration’ held at Destiny Auditorium, where more than 100 people heard from the same guest speakers.

“Trav told us not to be afraid to change to find your purpose,” said Mayor

Paronella. “Nicole’s message was to love out loud because everybody needs human connection, without judgement. And everyone can be an entrepreneur and you don’t have to wait for the perfect idea according to Yvette.

“Feedback was very positive and there were lots of questions from the audience.”

The Youth Forum was made possible by a partnership with VPG and funding from North Queensland (NQ) Primary Health Networks – NQ Active Healthy Grant.

The diversity of First Peoples of the Tablelands Regional lands provides a home rich in Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander heritage and culture.

“It is important we celebrate the uniqueness of our communities, while understanding the historical and ongoing impact of our colonial past,” said Mayor Joe Paronella.

“Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples experience vast differences in life expectancy, health, education, employment, and standards of living compared to their non-Indigenous counterparts.

“As a Council we started on the journey of understanding in December 2016 by establishing a working group to develop a Reflect Reconciliation Action Plan (RAP) guided by Reconciliation Australia.”

The RAP was endorsed

by Council and Reconciliation Australia in May 2018.

“Our RAP is based on a framework that supports workplaces to realise their vision for reconciliation,” said Mayor Paronella.

“It is not a legal document, but a practical plan of action to build relationships, respect and opportunities. In time, we hope our RAP will create social change and economic opportunities.”

It is 130km from the ocean but a fifth-generation cattle station near Ravenshoe is becoming a Far North Queensland leader in protecting the Great Barrier Reef.

Woodleigh Station, which has been in the Williams-Waddell family for 105 years and is known for its cattle and camping, is one of the first sites to benefit from a $3 million program focused on improving water quality in the Herbert River catchment. Funded by the Australian Government and delivered by Terrain NRM, the new program aims to reduce fine sediment run-off to the Great Barrier Reef lagoon. It includes major earthworks to reshape gullies, changes to grazing practices, new fences to keep stock from streambanks, off-stream watering infrastructure, revegetation projects and weed management.

The Herbert catchment, which extends 340km from the Herberton and Ravenshoe areas to the coastal

region of Ingham, is one of the three biggest contributors of sediment loads to the Reef.

This is something Woodleigh Station’s Williams-Waddell family wants to help change.

Third-generation grazier Kate Waddell said excitement was building about the new project, which began with gully monitoring and botanical surveys and escalated this month when fencing started and earthmoving equipment arrived for gully remediation work.

She said it was important to the family to “leave the land in a healthy state”.

“Woodleigh has been run by our family for more than a century and we want our young ones who are coming on to see the benefits and to love the land as much as we do,’’ Mrs Waddell said.

“Even with good grass cover and light stocking rates, some of our soil types erode easily during heavy rainfall. To improve our sustainability, over the last

10 years we’ve started wet season spelling – where we fallow paddocks – and we’ve stopped burning.

“We’ve noticed a big improvement in our grasses and soil biology. This project is the next big step.”

Sediment is one of the major materials affecting the health of the Great Barrier Reef.

Fine sediment poses the highest risk to reef ecosystems, smothering corals, seagrasses and other plants, affecting their growth and survival. This also affects the survival of turtles, dugongs, fish and other animals that depend on them for food and shelter.

Fine soils such as silt and clay, and the nutrients attached to them, travel even further into the reef, forming ‘flocs’ that attract and grow organic material, and reduce the light to corals and seagrass meadows.

Remediation work at Woodleigh Station will include eroded gullies and tailings dams from old alluvial tin mines. Terrain

NRM’s Jen Mackenzie said a tailings dam complex was the first earthworks project on the property.

“During high rainfall periods the dam complex is a source of fine sediment from super fine crushed rock,” she said. “We have just started remediation including rock-lining work and new wall structures.”

The $3 million Herbert River Gully and Grazing Program is funded through the Australian Government’s Reef Trust Phase IV program.

Terrain NRM will be undertaking projects on a number of properties in the Herbert River catchment over the next three to five years in partnership with landholders. Construction work has also begun on another property in the Upper Herbert area. The whole Woodleigh Station project – from earthworks to fencing, revegetation, watering system improvements and grazing practice changes will continue for a number of years.

Shane Knuth supports aerial feral pig shooting program KAP State Member for Hill Shane Knuth is determined to protect the billion dollar agriculture Industry from diseases such as Panama TR4, by taking one of its biggest threats, feral pigs, through an aerial feral pig shooting program.

Mr Knuth has met with Agriculture Minister Mark Furner to update him on the severe threat feral pigs pose to the regions agriculture business, through the spread of deadly diseases such as Panama TR4 from property to property.

Knuth also met with the Deputy Premier and Treasurer Jackie Trad with a proposal to secure extra fund-

ing for the program in the upcoming budget.

“While we welcome the State Government’s $1million funding across the board towards protecting agriculture and the feral pig problems in the region, much more is needed,” he said.

“Only a fraction has been put aside for aerial shooting, which is proven to be the most effective way of controlling one of the main spreaders of disease and destruction of crops, feral pigs.

“I have met with experts on the ground. They are concerned that without dedicated extra funding

towards an aerial feral pig shooting program, diseases such as Panama could continue to spread and the feral pig population continue to escalate, placing the regions various agriculture industries under severe threat.

“I stressed with both the Minister and the Deputy Premier that banana farmers have been hit with strict Bio security measures which is understandable.

However this has now limited access to properties to hunt feral pigs, increasing the potential spread of Panama. Aerial shooting is the only option and securing additional funding towards the program, in combina-

tion with Bio Security efforts on the ground, will allow us to drastically reduce the number of feral pigs on these properties and those coming out of national park land adjacent to agricultural properties.

“There are already qualified marksmen and helicopter pilots in the region who can immediately start and I am confident that after my meetings, the Government will see this is the best chance we have at protecting agriculture in the region, control the feral pig population and help stop the spread of diseases such as Panama TR4,” added Mr Knuth.

James Cook University researchers are working with local doctors to investigate Q fever on the Tablelands.

Q fever is an illness caused by the bacterium Coxiella burnetii and can be caught by direct or indirect contact with infected animals or animal products.

While a vaccine is available in Australia to protect people against Q fever, cases are on the increase across the country.

Atherton based researchers, Dr Aaron Hollins and Dr Jane Harte, hope that people on the Tablelands will take the time to complete a brief questionnaire.

“Q fever has been around for many years and often presents as a flu-like illness but can go on to cause problems for people in the long term with endocarditis and persistent

infections in major organs” stated Dr Hollins.

“This research will enable health professionals to understand the publics’ perception of Q fever and plan health promotion activities to prevent Q fever infection” he said.

Metrogaine fun this weekend

This weekend Mareeba friends and families will be getting together for some fun in the sun, all in aid of Childhood Cancer Research.

The Lions Club’s Metrogaine will take place on Sunday morning at Arnold Park and organisers are hoping to this year’s event will be bigger and better than last year.

In 2017 over 50 teams took part in the competition in which the aim is to see how many points they can locate on a map of the town

in a three hour period. Entrants can use bikes or travel by foot and co-ordinator of the event Tom Braes says it is a great family day out.

“We have families that come along and face the challenge and take a couple of hours and have a bit of fun,” he said. “It’s designed to get people out of the house and enjoying this beautiful weather we’re having.”

Now in its 6th year the Metrogaine along with other events has raised around $20,000 for the Australian

Lions Childhood Cancer Research Foundation.

“It’s a very important foundation,” said Mr Braes.

“This one struck a chord with me and I decided that we would support this particular foundation heavily.

“It’s a good cause.

Childhood cancer is terrible. Every child deserves a childhood.”

Registrations open on the day at 8am with the fun kicking off at 8.30am. The cost is just $10 per person or $20 for a team of four.

1. Place the shredded zucchini in a colander and sprinkle it lightly with salt. Let the zucchini sit for 10 minutes then using your hands, squeeze out as much liquid as possible.

5. Serve the fritters immediately topped with sour cream or yogurt.

Water skiing sensation to represent Australia

Despite struggling with no water and now an infestation of weeds at his practise site, 16-year-old Ryan Sciacca has still managed to make it onto the Australian Junior World Water Ski team.

The high school student is a member of the Barron River Water Ski Club and his parents own Tinaroo lake front lodge, Lavender Hill. Most weekends he can be found out on the lake practising hard – except for next month when he heads to Spain to represent his country.

Competing in the 2018 IWWF World Junior Championships, Ryan is just one of six under-17 competitors to be chosen from Australia compete against the best in the world.

“He’s been water skiing for around 10 years and competing in tournaments since then,” said mum Kim. “The last few years he’s made the Australian team and competed in the Aussie Kiwi Challenge which is a tournament between Aus-

tralia and New Zealand.”

The St Andrews Catholic College student is currently 6th in the world in his age bracket and being in the top ten competitors universally means a lot of practise time spent on the water, which has been a problem locally.

“He has trained very hard,” said dad Mike.

“But it’s been difficult because we haven’t had water here for the last two years and now we have the weed problem.

“We’ve been chasing

water around the country for the past few years just to get him the practise he needed.”

The World Junior Championships are held bi-annually and will this year be hosted by the Spanish Waterski Federation at the Sesena Waterski and Wakeboard Complex from August 2-5. Ryan will take part in multiple events including Slalem, Tricks and Jumps, with the latter being his speciality.

Along with his selection for the team, Ryan was also

invited to take part in the 2018 Junior US Open Water Ski Championships at the end of August but is unable to attend due to participating in the World Champs.

It’s a glittering start to his sporting career.

“I think he’d love to go on and compete professionally,” said Kim. “And when he finishes school he wants to go into something to do with sport.

“He’s pretty natural at it but has trained very hard.

He’s a very determined kid.”

The Atherton Roosters are the new competition ladder leaders following a 50-12 win over Edmonton Storm in Saturday nights Cairns District Rugby League match at the Mungalli Creek Dairy Stadium.

Club records show that the Roosters were last in the top position at this stage of the premiership back in 2009 when they went

onto be defeated by Cairns Brothers in the grand final after taking the minor premiers title.

The top of the table spot adds plenty of interest to the Roosters as the club heads into their 100 year celebrations this weekend.

Bulls fail to claw down Comets

The Mareeba Bulls fought till the end but were unable to claw down the high flying Southside Comets on Saturday night in Mareeba.

Despite showing fight and character all the way to till the end, the premier side went down 4-2.

The Bulls went into the match knowing their season is resting on a knifes edge and looked the better side against a fast and skilful Comets outfit. But again the side went behind early with the Comets taking advantage of their first real chance – poking home in a crowded penalty area to give them a 1-0 lead.

The Bulls got one back almost immediately with Steven Cater finishing off well from a Darcey McCormack cross. But just as the Bulls looked on top, the Comets struck three times in five minutes to round out the first half 4-1 in front – despite the homeside looking the better side.

In the second period, the Bulls again looked good in patches and scored midway through the first half with McCormack himself getting on the scorecard. As time ticked away the Bulls pressed for a comeback, but it was not meant to be, as the Comets ground out the
