Mareeba State School students and teachers have handed over a donation to Drought Angels – a charity that supports Aussie farmers doing it tough.

The money was raised via Book Week dress ups thanks to the student council and through raffles and staff donations.

“The student council chose that charity and the social club took it on board because it is something that as a local farming town we know the impact that drought can have,” said Deputy Principle and Social Club Co-ordinator Hannah Simpson.

In total $1037 was raised for the cause.

Millaa Millaa School celebrates 100 years

Millaa Millaa State School turns 100 this weekend and to celebrate there will be two packed days of fun including the return of past students, some of which now live overseas.

The school holds a dear place in many peoples’ hearts. Past pupil Brian Poulos’ daughter Bella is currently a student. He said he remembers Millaa Millaa State School being “a beaut school which had a great atmosphere”.

“Going to this school was a great experience for young people to learn to get along with each other and compromise,” he said. “They are the best skills to learn for the future which I know have helped me.

“All students helped each other out whether older or younger.”

Third generation past pupil, Georgina Humphries said that both her grandfather and her mother went to Millaa Millaa State School. Her grandfather planted three trees in the forestry plot when it was first established.

Two of them are still standing today.

“We’ve got the best community that supports the school,” she said.

Council reconsiders plan to cull trees

Tablelands Regional Council will re-visit its decision to cut down the Camphor Laurel trees along Mary Street in Malanda to make way for development of the road this week.

The move was announced in a statement made by CEO Justin Commons after a meeting last Tuesday revealed the community was not in favour of removing the trees to make way for more car parking spaces and a better pedestrian area.

Last month the council released a statement saying that the “old and potentially dangerous” Camphor laurel trees “are showing evidence of reaching the end of their life, will be replaced by species more suited to the conditions and location”.

But Mr Commons said he was listening to residents’ concerns and had engaged an independent arborist to assess the life-span of the trees and was re-visiting the impact keeping the trees would have on plans for the road.

“Council is committed to serving our community with safety a high priority,” he said.

“Despite possibly getting off to a ‘bumpy start’ on Tuesday night, our ears and eyes were wide open and we have heard the concerns of some members in our community.”

Malanda’s Camphor Laurel trees live to see another day after public outcry caused Tablelands Regional Council to re-assess the situation.

Mr Commons said he was aware that members of the community were not in favour of the council’s plans for the road.

“Council does not want this matter to create a significant divide in the community and accepts that we all have a different frame of reference for a project of this nature,” he said.

“Some will look to the past with a high regard to heritage and some people will look to the future with high regard for progress. There is no right or wrong

- just the challenge of seeking to ‘get the right balance’.”

Malanda resident Kaye Brand wrote to the council to ask them to try and find an alternative to cutting the trees down which her father remembers being planted.

“I am hopeful that the councillors will reconsider their plans to knock down the Camphor Laurel trees and look beyond the physical structures of parking and related issues to the needs of the beautiful, soulful and historic Mary Street,” she said.

“The destruction of these near ancient trees is an emotional issue for the residents of Malanda.

“It is important that the Council does not allow the needs of town planning to override these emotional needs and sensitivities of the people who call Malanda home.”

Mr Commons said work would not commence on the road this week as expected and that feedback would be sought from the Malanda community regarding further viable options.

Locals support berry grower

Tablelanders have come together to unite over the recent strawberry needle contamination outbreak across the country.

Bob Sheehy from Shaylee Strawberries between Atherton and Yungaburra said locals have been buying his strawberries in bulk in support of the local grower.

“We’ve been flat out,” he said. “We’re still selling them in a few local places like Atherton IGA but here at the farm it has been very, very busy.”

Mr Sheehy opened the doors to his farm seven days for customers to go and pick their own strawberries in light of the recent contamination scare which has meant some local outlets were unable to sell his produce.

“They’re trying really hard to

get us back in,” he said.

“But there are all these regulations now and they’re making us jump through hoops.”

Police across the country are now dealing with more than 100 reports of contaminated fruit however, authorities believe many are hoax and copycat incidents. Offenders of contamination face up to 10 years in prison.

13-year-old girl charged by police

Police have charged a 13-year-old girl after an incident in Atherton last Thursday morning.

It will be alleged the girl entered a property on Norbury Court and removed two dogs from the premises, which were recovered a short time later by their owner.

It will also be alleged the girl then returned to her place of residence on Norbury Court and threw a brick through a window

before also throwing another brick through the back window of a vehicle.

It will further be alleged the girl then assaulted her carer before also assaulting two police officers who were called to the disturbance.

The girl has been charged with one count each of stealing, trespass, possess implement, common assault and two counts each of wilful damage and assault police.

“I remember sitting in that wooden classroom over there, no air-conditioning in those days and watching Neil Armstrong land on the moon on July 20 1969. I was 12 years old and in grade 5 – the classrooms seem

a lot smaller than they were, but that’s because we’re adults,” said Pat. “The Infrastructure was a lot smaller but there were about 1000 students when I was here and we had up to 45 in class.” she said.

Pats Daughter and Florence’s granddaughter, Olivia Battistin started school in 1992 and finished in 1999.

“In our time here we had composite classes so we had grades 1, 2 and 3 all together as family groups,” said Mrs Battistin.

“We had some great times

and we made some great friends along the way.”

Mataya Battistin, Olivia’s daughter, is a current student at Mareeba State School and the fourth generation of the quartet.

She said she love free time at school, she loves to fish and I have good teachers,” said Mataya.

“I like to draw and do some sport and playing games – I don’t know what I want to be when I grow up,” she said.

“But that’s fine there is heaps of time for that.”

Paige’s fight for ag school funding

A former Atherton State High School student is trying to overturn a state government decision that will stop funding a school program that encourages kids to work in the agricultural industry.

Paige Hooley left high school in 2016 and is now studying vet science in Townsville – a career path she says she never would have taken if it hadn’t been for the School to Industry Partnership Program (SIPP).

But after this year there will be no more funding for the program which runs from primary school – teaching kids the importance of where their food comes from – through until high school when students start to make career choices.

“For me in school I wasn’t interested in sports or music or arts, I was really only interested in science and I loved animals so agricultural science was definitely where I was going to head,” said Paige.

“What I learned through the program has also helped me with my course and my agriculture teacher helped me to push me towards doing vet science.”

Paige said that she feels that cancelling the funding for the program is poor timing with the current drought crisis and a lack of rural vets.

“When I heard the funding would be cut, I instantly felt like I had to do something,” she said.

Paige’s online petition via Change.org has so far garnered over 500 signatures and the attention of Member for Hill Shane Knuth.

Mr Knuth raised the issue in parliament last week saying the choice to remove the funding is “an attack” on the Queensland agricultural industry.

“Discarding this program that has educated Queensland children on the importance of agriculture in our state and where their food comes from is just the latest in this Government’s sustained deconstruction of the agricultural industry,” Mr Knuth said.

“The discontinuation of funding for the School to Industry Partnership Program will mean future policy makers grow up without knowing the importance of our agricultural industry to our economy and our quality of life.

“It is imperative that we change the direction and start to acknowledge not just with words but with actions, that our ag industry is here to stay, that we support our farmers and we value this necessary backbone of our economy and way of life.”

Mr Knuth said the program had been operating since 2004 and received $180,000 a year engaging more than 10,000 Queensland school students and teachers.

Paige is hoping for at least 1000 signatures and to raise awareness of the issue.

Mareeba Shire Council CEO Peter Franks says the state law needs to change to allow employees that aren’t part of a union to vote on employment pay and conditions.

Over 90 members of his staff sent off a petition last week to The Services Union (TSU) protesting about a stalemate over voting rights.

Employees say the new Queensland Industrial Relations Act that was introduced in 2016 is set up to favour unions “at the expense of individual workers and their employers”.

“Under the new legislation, the right of workers to negotiate their own agreements has effectively been taken away,” said a representative of the staff.

“Where previously workers could decide they wanted to

negotiate their conditions with councils themselves, the new law says they can’t. Only unions can negotiate on behalf of employees and we, the workers, are excluded from the negotiation process. In many councils these unions only represent a minority of workers, leaving most workers without a voice.”

Of the five unions that need to agree to discuss the draft enterprise bargaining scheme, four have said yes, with TSU the last to agree.

Ben Jones from the union said members of the TSU that are employed with Mareeba Shire Council are not happy with some of the conditions in the scheme.

“Council has stripped away a number of the core conditions for its staff,” he said.

“The agreement they are in proposing is not acceptable to our members and we’re asking them to reinstate those condi-

But Mr Franks says the content of the agreement is irrelevant.

“What the employees are saying in their petition is that they’re not going to accept the agreement they just want the right to vote on it,” said Mr Franks.

“I tried to take it to the vote last year and I was taken to the commission and the commission said until all the unions agree you can’t put it to the vote.”

Mr Jones said the union can only represent the views of “paid financial members” of the TSU but that they are willing to sit down and discuss a way forward with the employees of Mareeba Shire Council.

“The bottom line is we’re not in the business of gaining

conditions and working hard to maintain good conditions for our members to then be throwing them away at the behest of people who are not even in the union,” he said.

“These conditions might work well for those employees but for our members they don’t.

“They’ve made it quite clear to us they’re not interested in further discussion. We would like nothing more than to sit down with them and nut it out, but the council will not entertain the idea of further discussion.”

Mareeba Shire Council employees say they have been trying to negotiate a way forward for 18 months with no end in sight to the stalemate.

“My big thing is that the legislation is set up now in such a way that it’s to benefit the unions at the disadvantage of the employees,” said Mr Franks.

“It’s wrong.”

Rubbish changes in Mareeba Shire

Changes to rubbish bin routes and times in Mareeba shire have caused some disruption for locals but council says residents need to be reminded to put their bins out the night before to ensure it will be collected.

Mareeba Shire Council CEO Peter Franks said there had been some complaints from locals after routes and times were altered recently and keep an eye on public notices for any further alterations.

He also spoke about changes to state law that make it unlawful to leave your bin out kerbside for more than 24 hours.

“This council said we’ve never given a fine we can’t put it in a local law,” he said of the

legal changes.

“Then at the eleventh hour the state changed their position so it’s remained in the state legislation so yes we can give people fines for doing it, but we don’t want to.”

Mr Franks said if someone complains about a bin being left on the kerb for longer than 24 hours then council officers will make contact with the owner and remind them of the legislation. New bin trucks that feature cameras all around for safety and viewing of content have been a great success in the shire after their introduction earlier this year.

“It’s really to try and deliver a better service,” said Mr Franks. “If someone says their bin wasn’t collected, we can look back at the video see whether it was or not.”

Eco-waste option at transfer station

An exciting opportunity exists for a suitably qualified contractor to capitalise on green waste collected at Mareeba Shire’s waste transfer stations.

Council agreed to call for Expressions of Interest from potential eco-waste companies to process and market the green waste.

Deputy Mayor Cr Alan Pedersen said by seeking Expressions of Interest, will give Council various options and al-

ternatives to manage the waste.

“Council is open to ideas and best business practices to manage the green waste,” Cr Pedersen said.

“We essentially are looking for a contractor to process the green waste and market it elsewhere. We recognise that mulch has a commodity value and that there is a great opportunity for a suitable contractor to essentially capitalise on the resource,” he said.

Drag car sparks act of kindness for sick boy

The opportunity to buy a top of the range drag racing car has led to an unlikely gesture of kindness for a sick young boy from Victoria.

Mareeba farmer Elio Quintieri was looking for an engine for his drag racing hobby when he struck up a friendship with Australian Champion drag racer Jason Stares from Sydney.

Eventually Elio decided to buy Jason’s American-produced car that helped him win both of his national titles, with Jason offering to bring it to the Tablelands and show the new owner how it works.

The champion driver got behind the wheel of the 1963 Corvette split window, fully fibreglassed beauty at Springmount Raceway’s September 15 event and won the Super Comp which came with a trophy and $400 prize money.

“I got to know him and he told me about a young fan of his that has Duchenne Muscular Dystrophy,” said Elio.

“After he won the race here I gave him the trophy for his daughter and the $400 prize money to go towards a fundraiser for the boy.”

Fellow local farmers Frank and Tara Quintieri also donated $100 to the cause.

The money will go towards the Save Our Sons Duchenne Foundation that is in aid of 13-year-old Alex Mee who is suffering from Duchenne Muscular Dystrophy. The disease means he lives with a life expectancy of 25 years old.

“Alex has been a fan of racing his whole life,” said Mr Stares.

“He’s been unable to race himself because of the disease but he loves following our progress.”

Retired Inspector Rolf Straatemeier officially hands the baton over to the new Tableland Patrol District Inspector, Russel Rhodes who will take up his new post in early November.

Inspector calls it a day after 43 years After a career spanning 43 years, Inspector Rolf Straatemeier farewelled the Queensland Police Service (QPS) last Friday, September 21.

The day of his retirement coincided with the day of his 60th birthday, so his time in the police force will never be forgotten.

Mr Straatemeier joined the then Queensland Police Force as

a Cadet in 1975 at the Queensland Police Academy in Brisbane. He performed duties at stations including Red Hill, the Commissioner’s Office, Woolloongabba, Stafford and Brisbane Mobile Patrols before securing his plain clothes appointment to the Brisbane Criminal Investigation Branch (CIB) in 1981.

He obtained his detective ap-

pointment in 1984 and sustained an 18-year-long plain clothes career; he progressed through the ranks to Detective Senior Sergeant and later reached commissioned ranks with his appointment to Inspector in the Far Northern Regional Office in 1999. For the past 19 years, Inspector Straatemeier has performed a variety of commis-

The new Inspector for the Tableland Patrol District, Russel Rhodes will see him return to the Northern district where he spent most of his early career. Inspector Rhodes will take up his new position in early November.

The Mareeba Lioness club presented a cheque for $9,000 to the Cancer Council Queensland last Wednesday.

The donation was raised at the recent pink ribbon garden party held on August 11.

Jenny Coates, the Cancer Council foundation Co-ordinator from Cairns was on hand to receive the cheque, she said that the money raised by the Mareeba Lioness Club would stay locally and would be put towards the Marylyn Mayo Lodge which hosts free accommodation for residents of Mareeba who are suffering from cancer related illnesses, this also includes any transport requirements during their stay in the lodge. She reminded sufferers that the Cancer council also has a free wig and turban service and also a full time cancer support officer in Cairns, Bonnie White can be contacted on 13 11 20.

A FREE physical activity program is coming to Mareeba.

Commencing on October 3, the Healthy Bodies, Healthy Minds program is for all adults over 18 years of age and who are recovering from a mental illness.

It’s an 8-week healthy lifestyle, exercise and motivational program commencing and to be eligible for the program participants must be utilising a mental health service e.g. their GP, headspace, community mental health organisation, or other counselling/support service.

There are two program groups; Group 1 is a motivational group meeting at PCYC once a week to set exercise goals, identify barriers to physical activity, engage in current programs in Mareeba area, try out different types of physical activity and increase community engagement. All participants in Group 1 receive a Garmin fitness tracker to assist with monitoring of their physical activity and have this to keep.

Group 2 is a gym-based

exercise program. Participants will meet at the PCYC once a week and complete a supervised gym-based program with an Exercise Physiologist. This program is suitable for all fitness levels. Following completion of the 8-week gym program, participants will be eligible for a PCYC gym membership (approximately 3 months).

All participants will need to complete an initial assessment prior to the program commencing organisers have a comprehensive knowledge of their current health needs and can use these to set appropriate goals during the program.

The State’s peak motoring body has revealed the nation’s safest and deadliest used cars on the market and warned drivers about the risks of choosing a cheap deal, over safety features.

The annual Used Car Safety Ratings report*, led by Monash University, put 372 cars under the microscope and analysed data from more than eight million real-world crashes across Australia and New Zealand.

RACQ Head of Technical and Safety Policy Steve Spalding said parents in the market for a first car for their children needed to take these star ratings into account.

“For example, a 2009 Holden Cruze nabbed a fourstar safety rating, while a 2007 Mitsubishi Lancer was only given a one-star safety rating,” Mr Spalding said.

“It goes to show even though they’re both small cars, popular with young drivers; they can have dramatically different levels of protection.

“A person driving a onestar vehicle is almost twice as

likely to be killed or seriously hurt than someone in a fivestar car. Worryingly, 107 vehicles were rated ‘poor’ or ‘very poor’.”

Mr Spalding said buyers should look to one of the 31 ‘safer pick’ models as the optimum choice when shopping for a car.

“This means they have excellent protection, not just for the driver, but will also cause less serious injuries to other drivers, pedestrians, cyclists and motorcyclists.”

Mr Spalding said while older, low rated cars were often cheaper, there were still safe and affordable used vehicles available.

“Smart, safe choices needn’t hit you in the hip pocket. A safe used vehicle can be picked up for less than $10,000.”

RACQ is part of the Vehicle Safety Research Group which commissioned the research from Monash University and is comprised of the major motoring clubs in Australia and New Zealand.

The State’s peak motoring body has called for drastic action to drive down Australia’s shocking road toll after a national inquiry revealed our road safety performance had hit the brakes, costing not only lives, but more than $30 billion to the economy.

RACQ Head of Technical and Safety Policy Steve Spalding said the inquiry into the National Road Safety Strategy (NRSS) had revealed Australia suffered from flaws in accountability, funding, and technology that had directly impacted the rate of road deaths.

“In Queensland, we’ve lost more lives in road crashes already this year than in 2017 so these recommendations from the National Road Safety Strategy can’t come any sooner,” Mr Spalding said.

“We’ve joined the Australian Automobile Association in calling for action because every day these findings sit on a desk ignored – lives are at risk on our roads.”

Mr Spalding said amongst the 12 recommendations was the appointment of a Federal cabinet minister who would focus on the hidden epidemic of road trauma which was expected to cost the economy a staggering $300 billion by 2030.

“We’ve long campaigned for strong leadership on road safety and appointing a cabinet minister with specific oversight across mul-

tiple agencies will see a coordinated approach to saving lives,” he said.

“The inquiry found failing to act will result in thousands more killed and injured every year – and while the human cost is obviously tragic, it’s also a cost to the economy.”

Mr Spalding welcomed the inquiry’s recommendation for the establishment of a $3 billion road safety fund.

“State and local roads

continue to be overlooked for funding despite RACQ’s consistent calls for mass action safety upgrades we’ve identified through AusRAP,” he said.

“Every Queenslander, no matter where they live, deserves access to safe roads and the only way to do this is to adopt these recommendations at a Federal, State and even local level.”

Central Tyre Service celebrates 50 years In 1967 three wise men got together in an Atherton pub to discuss the development of Central Tyre Service as a business and ongoing enterprise for the growing region.

After a chat and possibly a few beers between the late Chano Trentin, Goodyear representative Peter Makepeace and local builder Reg McAuliffe, plans were put into place for the establishment of Central Tyre Service.

All that was fifty years ago and no one has looked back.

Central Tyre Service opened its first outlet in 1968 where it stands today at 9 Robert Street, Atherton.

After the store was built and fully operational it was

operated by just three workers and today still offers the same service principals it was founded on.

Three years later in 1971 the business partners opened the Malanda outlet at 21 Catherine Street followed by Mareeba at 9 Hort Street in 1977 and at 15 Mills Street, Mossman in 1988.

All four Central Tyres Service outlets are still in their original locations and continue to service the entire district.

In 1973 Don and Mary Scheffler joined the partnership. Mary is sister to the late Chano Trentin, who passed away in May 2016, Leon, Chano’s son, is now also a partner in the business with

Don and Mary.

The business has moved ahead in leaps and bounds and has been unstoppable for half a century as they shared a unique partnership with the Goodyear brand.

Their business success can be attributed to loyal, well trained and experienced staff who have stuck with the company through thick and thin, the majority of whom have been with them for more than 25 years.

Orchids on display The Mareeba Orchid and Pot Plant Society, in conjunction with Mareeba Garden Centre, held a very successful display of spring flowering orchids and foliage plants on Friday, September 14 and Saturday, September 15.

Demonstrations of repotting orchids were held on both days, with much interest from visitors, and many questions asked.

Society members were also available to speak to the public about individual plants, watering, fertilizing and pest and disease control.

There was a sales table where members sold excess plants of orchids and tillandsias at reasonable prices.

A raffle was also held and the winners were – 1st Milly Bernardi, 2nd Pat Shaban, 3rd June Wallace and 4th Frances Cristaldi.

From humble beginnings 31 years ago, Quality Innovation Training and Employment has transformed itself from a small organisation helping disengaged youth into now one of the region’s largest employers and providers of employment services and training in Far North Queensland.

WHERE IT ALL BEGAN...

It all started in 1987 when a group of Mareeba citizens founded the ‘Community Youth Support Scheme’ and it is unlikely that they could have ever predicted that the small local training organisation originally for disengaged youth, would evolve into the organisation that Q.I.T.E. is today.

Throughout history we have seen ‘change’ as a constant factor on our landscape and this remains as true today as ever. As an organisation Q.I.T.E. have diversified as much as possible to keep up with the industry and government changes.

Mareeba Shire Job Training Association Inc. (Q.I.T.E.) was established to provide services to the youth of Mareeba under the Community Youth Support Scheme (CYSS). The funding for this

program ceased in 1989 and this began the many changes that Q.I.T.E. has had over the past 31 years.

Achievements over the past 31 years...

Q.I.T.E. has grown from an initial staff of four to more than 75 in 2018 and is now one of the largest employment organisations in Far North Queensland.

The organisation has expanded its branches to better serve the needs of the Tablelands community and now operates in seven locations – Mareeba, Atherton, Cairns and Innisfail and outreach services to Ravenshoe, Tully and Mossman.

In achieving this growth Q.I.T.E. diversified its scope and range of services to respond to the needs of individuals, job seekers, employers, industry and the wider com-

munity. This included opening a long day care centre – Qt’s Early Leaning Centre in September of 2009.

This organisation has not only stayed the distance, but continues to excel. Its success has been the product of constant, tireless dedication by everyone who has worked with and for the organisation.

It has also been the product of the vision and passion of those who have led the organisation over the years. Most notably former Chairman Tito Srhoj, current Chairman Peter Apel, Life Member Evan McGrath and present General Manager Jillian Trout, the Board and the entire Management team.

Atherton Roosters first grade coach Graham Clark was named Coach of the Year at the Cairns District Rugby League 2018 Gold Medal Dinner on Friday night.

The award capped off a great season for Clark in his first year as the Roosters mentor. After leading the competition midway through the premiership, the Roosters finished the regular season in second spot before bowing out two games into the finals. Graham Clark will continue as the Atherton Roosters head coach in 2019. Roosters young forward Mae Mani was named CDRL Rookie of the Year also on Friday.

Atherton fight hard but get defeated

Atherton Cricket let one get away on Saturday in the Far North Cricket T20 match against Norths at Loder Park.

Norths looking to attone for their loss to Atherton in the T20 decider last season, won the toss and sent the home team in to bat.

Dan Parnell continued his early good form clearing the boundary 4 times on his way to 60 off 46 balls.

Atherton lost key wickets Chris Adams and Paul Nasser early, both caught behind off the bowling of Norths quick Brendan Smith.

Tom Boorman 45 off 47 and Fred Pittorino 25 off 17 both did well, batting out the overs to post a team total of 141.

Norths got off to a good start keeping well ahead of the run rate to be 1-74 off 7 overs.

Atherton fought hard though, and after Dan Parnell picked up a key Batsman Dan Parnell scored 60 for wicket in the 8th over, went on Atherton at Loder Park on Saturday. to take the next 5 wickets for 43 runs putting the game back in the Tom Boorman got the unenvi- the edge of their seats bowling 4 last ball of the match. 2nd Grade balance.

Bulls weekend of semi final twists

The Mareeba Bulls went into the first weekend of the FNQ Football finals and produced all the ups and downs that only semi-finals football can do.

Out of the five divisions the Bulls had in the finals series, the club said goodbye to the under 18’s, but still have four sides playing off this weekend in the preliminary finals all vying for a spot in the grand final. The Bulls 2nd division boys are already waiting after their win.

On Friday night the Bulls 1st division boys travelled down to Port Douglas to take on the premiers the Douglas Dragons.

After a close first half, the homeside ran away with the match in the second half with a 3-0 win, therefore setting a up a elimination final this Friday night with the Bulls hosting arch rivals the

Atherton Eagles.

Meanwhile a few kilometres south, the Bulls 2nd division boys travelled down to Marlin Coast, but this time it was the Bulls who came away with the win and booked a spot in the grand final with a impressive 2-1 over the Rangers.

On Saturday afternoon the Bulls reserves travelled down to the Southside Comets to take on the Innisfail Cutters and despite a very even contest, it was the Cutters who found a way to win 2-1 against the Bulls. The Mareeba side will now take on the Edge Hill Tigers this Saturday in the reserve grade preliminary final.

On Sunday both the clubs youth and ladies travelled down to Marlin Coast to play in the elimination semi finals, with the

youth boys taking on the Stratford Dolphins and the ladies playing the JCU Strikers.

The youth boys fought back from 1-0 down early to be level 1-1 with only five minutes remaining. With the Bulls dominating proceedings, it looked as though the match would go into extra time, but the Dolphins put a dagger through the hearts of the youth supporters with two goals in the last five minutes to come away with a shock 3-1 win, ending the Bulls youth season.

The match of the weekend was the Bulls ladies against the JCU Strikers. After 120 minutes of gruelling football with the Bulls giving everything they had in their tank, nothing could split the two sides and it headed to the dreaded penalty shootouts.

Nicole Ghensi scoring the first, keeper Farah Boustead was then the hero saving the Strikers first penalty, before Kaliegh Cappella and Aly Slyney both scored their penalties, the Strikers then missed their fourth setting up 14-year-old Tonia-Maree Rantucci to step up and convert the winner and the youngster did not disappoint slotting away the winner with the match ending 4-1 on penalties.

This weekend is sudden death football for all three sides. While the 2nd division boys will enjoy the weekend off, the clubs 1st division boys will host the Atherton Eagles on Friday night and the clubs reserves and ladies will both travel down to Southside Comets on Saturday in their respective divisions.
