Landslide victory

They say you can’t keep a good man down and that is true of Shane Knuth this week who is celebrating the launch of his sixth term in office. The Katter Party member won the seat of Hill in a landslide of votes over the

weekend, raking in double the numbers of his nearest rival, LNP’s Mario Quagliata. Over in the Cook electorate, social worker Cynthia Lui, Labor, is poised to take the helm and make history as the first Torres Strait Islander elected to office in Australia. The final tally will not

be known for Cook for some time but that isn’t stopping the celebrations and commiserations - from starting. “We are still waiting for the final count of votes and preferences but I am quietly confident that Labor will regain the seat of Cook,” said Ms Lui on Sunday. “It has been a campaign

that has provided voice to many issues and if I am elected as the Member for Cook, I will work with residents to find solutions for the whole community. “I want to place on record my thanks to the many volunteers and supporters who have made our campaign so strong and I look forward to the opportu-

nity to represent you in the Queensland Parliament.” Labor held almost 40 per cent of the votes by the end of the weekend soaring ahead of One Nation’s Jen Sackley who was holding on to 18 per cent of the votes at the time of print. LNP’s Penny Johnson and KAP’s Gordon Rasmussen failed to make a big

impression on the voters despite strong campaigns in the lead up to November 25. Both were sitting neck and neck with 17 per cent of the votes. Mr Rasmussen has been a vocal campaigner for the Mareeba region in particular and worked hard in the months leading up to the election to educate himself

on the wants and needs of the community. The Julatten farmer did get the biggest number of votes from his home town polling booth and those in Biboohra, Chillagoe, Daintree, Dimbulah and one of the polling stations in Mareeba. cont. P3

An unprecedented number of young flying foxes have been found orphaned or dead at the Cairns CBD colony, prompting Kuranda wildlife carers to put a call out for help. Last year 146 flying foxes were raised and released in total, but in the past nine weeks alone a staggering 523 have been found either dead or orphaned with 300 of them needing round the clock feeding and intensive care. “We have no idea why this is happening,” said Rebecca Koller from Our Animals Our Earth in Kuranda. “I started documenting the live and dead and where exactly they were found and what activity was going around it so I could try and pinpoint exactly what was causing it. “There seems to be a direct link to when the construction company moved the crane arms directly over the trees of the colony and the numbers we’ve found on the ground. There could be other factors, but that seems to be where the link is. We’re not going to know until the end of it.” Rebecca is an experi-

enced wildlife carer and along with approximately 30 others from the Far North has always put her hand in her own pocket to buy expensive bat milk formula, teats and bottles to keep the babies thriving until they can be released back into the wild. But with so many to look after she is asking for donations and has set up a GoFundMe page. She has already raised just over $8000 of a $10,000 goal. “If they come in healthy we need specialist formulas, teats and bottles, that’s if they come in fully furred, not a premature pup,” she said. “Then when they get to three months old they need their fruit, protein powders and particular items we use to teach them to drink from and then they go into a flight aviary so they can stretch their wings before they’re released. Then we do a soft release. That’s a six month process.” A lot of the flying fox pups that have been found recently are premature meaning they require a lot more work. A carer has been drafted in from Rockhampton to help care for the rising numbers of animals while

100 were sent to the Australian Bat Clinic in Brisbane for round the clock care and will be brought back to the Far North for release when they are ready. Ms Koller is asking for people to put personal perceptions of flying foxes aside and think about preserving the protected species. “People are frightened of them,” she said. “They’re not the demonic creature they’re made out to be. They’re beautiful. A lot people say they are pests and they’re feral, but they’re not and they ask what is the purpose of them – they’re long distance pollinators. They’re a key stone species, the same as a cassowary. “I don’t expect people to love them, but we need them. The stories of them carrying diseases is so far removed from what the truth is. Less than one per cent carry Lyssavirus and you can’t contract it unless you interfere with a bat. You can’t get it from their faeces, you can’t get it from their droppings. They’re not just flying around with disease.” To donate head to www. gofundme.com/ 4m5qayg

An Atherton State High school distance education student has won a prestigious award in Brisbane for his design of an aeronautical pod for a camera that fits on to the wing of a plane. Rowan McNab, 17, came up with the design during Aerospace Studies and decided to enter it into the Aeospace Industry Education Awards. He flew to Brisbane last week with four other finalists where he was chosen as the winner. “It was nuts,” said Rowan.“I was really grate-

ful that my design was chosen.” Rowan said he has a passion for aviation and has taken flying lessons. Next year he is hoping to get a place at Griffith University in Brisbane to study a double degree in engineering and industrial design. “I’m not sure what I want to do long term yet, but I want to do something with aeronautical design,” he said. As part of his prize, Rowan won $500 and gets a one year affiliate into the Royal Aeronautical Soci-

ety. The awards were held at Parliament House and are part of the Gateway to Industry Schools Program and were presented by the Assistant Director-General, Steven Koch. Finalists were judged on their ability to produce the best project and accompanying formal written report, which they produced as part of their Year 12 studies. Projects were judged on their innovation and practicality and included themes such as rocket launching and airport design.

Rowan McNab has a go in a Qantas Airways hanger 3 during his visit to Brisbane last week to receive his award.

Nothing but a ‘hole of hope’ By Rebecca Wallis

It’s been almost four years since members of the community purchased bricks dedicated to loved ones fighting cancer, but still the Wall of Hope has not been built. Frustration at the lack of progress on the project, which is due to be erected in Centenary Park in Mareeba, has reached boiling point. Katharine Wiltshire handed over $50 in March 2014 for a plaque to be placed on the wall in memory of her parents that died of cancer. “We’ve been given so many excuses as to why it has not been built yet,” said Mrs Wiltshire. “Every time I call I get a different answer. I rang and rang and rang and in the end she just didn’t return calls.” The project is being driven by former Cancer Council Queensland Hope Ambassador Vilma Moriconi. To date the only progress made on the wall is a hole that was dug approximately three months ago

which is guarded by safety fencing. Around $4570 was raised through the project for Cancer Council Queensland, with a spokesperson for the organisation stating the money had been received and would be used to assist those affected by cancer. But for those expecting a plaque in memory of a loved one, it is not much of a consolation. “It doesn’t matter if you put in $300, $150 or $50, that’s not the point,” said Mrs Wiltshire. “The point is a promise was made that this would be built and it hasn’t happened. There are probably some people that have put money in who have died now. All we’ve got here is a hole in the ground – after four years.” After being contacted by The Express, Ms Moriconi said the wall was being built this week but could not explain the delay or which contractors were being used to complete the project. Cancer Council Queensland CEO Chris McMillian released a state-

ment on Friday. “We appreciate the support of the local community and are dedicated to ensuring that the wall is completed,” she said. “We have been advised by Vilma that the wall will be completed within two weeks and hope to see this happen.” The wall was due to be erected by volunteer tradesmen and donations from local organisations. “There’s a lot of people in the community that are cranky about it,” said Mrs Wiltshire. “People want to know what happened with the money, but nobody’s been told a thing. We don’t know how many bricks have been sold or how much money they raised. We’ve heard nothing. “She gave you promise after promise after promise until I said I’ll believe it when I see it.” Mrs Wiltshire said she was an annual donator to Cancer Council but said she would not be giving anymore money until the wall had been built. “All we’ve got instead is a hole of hope,” she said.

Knuth’s back in, Labor poised to win Cook and Barron River From P1

But no one could compete with Lui who in some parts of the Cape raked in over 90 per cent of the votes. Down the road in the electorate of Hill it was a similar story for KAP’s Shane Knuth who led a quiet campaign in recent weeks, letting his reputation as the man who gets things done go before him. Knuth is credited with fighting for and getting Atherton Hospital’s $70million upgrade, as well as the new medical centre in Dimbulah which he will officially open today.

“I’m greatly humbled and honoured to get the overwhelming vote of approval from the Atherton Tablelands and the new coastal areas,” he said to The Express on Sunday. “I appreciate that they’ve put their faith in me. I am very committed to the electorate and will work hard not to let them down.” There was a nervous wait on Sunday to see whether Hinchinbrook would be won by Knuth’s colleague Nick Dametto meaning they would then hold the balance of power in parliament. Rumours were also rife that Annasta-

cia Palaszczuk would also go back on her word and do a deal with the Katter’s in order to secure Labor’s position as the ruling party. “We don’t care who gets in,” said Knuth. “We’ll be siding with the policy that meets the needs of regional Queensland.” Last week the KAP’s announced that if they had the opportunity they would be securing $3.5billion for Far North infrastructure. “We want to ensure that the region has a voice,” said Knuth. “And that we get our fair share of infrastructure funding. People will always be

put first.” For many voters, Knuth was a no brainer. Years of experience and a proven track record of getting things done put him in a great position in the lead up to Saturday, but many did predict that Tully farmer and businessman Mario Quagliata might be one to upset the applecart. Quagliata lead a strong campaign for months, involving himself with everything from debates on water to power prices. He did his best to win over the hearts of Tablelanders but fell short of the mark raking in just 23 per cent of the votes

(by Sunday) behind Knuth’s 45 per cent. “I would like to thank my family, friends and volunteers who have helped and supported me throughout the campaign period,” he said on Sunday. “I have learnt a lot during this time and have made a lot of friendships along the way.” In a close race, Labor’s Craig Crawford has claimed victory in Barron River over LNP’s Michael Trout. While Trout is only about 800 primary votes behind, preferences will help Crawford get over the line.

Council’s ignore case law Regarding Louise Pensini’s letter to the editor (A Murdoch paper 21.11.17) regarding approval by the TRC of agricultural land for commercial development, saving the GQAL – she left out a few salient points.

The Express reserves the right to edit letters

Firstly, and most importantly, Queensland Councils are a legislative body. They are obligated to abide by Legislation, State Policies and Case Law. It is therefore relevant to applications to develop agricultural land, for commercial business purposes, that Councils abide by the Land Act, Sus-

tainable Planning Act, State Planning Policy (such policies become law under the Statutory Instruments Act), FNQ Regional Plan 2009 – 2031 (FNQPP), and Case Law. There is ample evidence within the Sustainable Planning Act and the State Planning Policy and the FNQPP,

to demonstrate agricultural land is not for development for other purposes. However, the TRC Council and the TRC Planning section plainly have very short memories, or chose to ignore a vital piece of Case Law. This Case Law set a precedent, which must be abided by, unless challenged in a high-

er court, but did not. Therefore it is incumbent upon planning officers, throughout this State, to abide by the following decision. Liston and Pensini v Tablelands Regional Council and Beantree Pty Ltd. This is a land court decision only two years old, and yet the TRC has chosen to ignore

it. Basically it overturned a development application, approved by the TRC, to subdivide agricultural land, effectively nullifying applications by developers, to develop agricultural land. This Case Law could be overturned, but it would require a developer to launch legal action, in the Land Court, to

overturn a Councils refusal for a development permit. So where does TRC, and other councils, become selfrighteous, to the extent they can ignore a precedent sent in Case Law, let alone State Policies and their very own FNQPP? Graham Sweeper Mareeba

No support for small business

2 years, Land Valuations have not increased in that time and have actually decreased in some cases. As we all know inflation is running at approx. 2% pa. When these statistics were presented, the Council decided that they were not happy squeezing small business to the extent they already have and ignored our objections and as of 2019, the Council stated that they will increase the rates being paid yet again. Recent correspondence from TRC shows that they have reviewed their approach to rating and have asserted that the “Use of land to operate a business and generate revenue is not a residential purpose and … Council is justified in categorising the land as Category C - Non-Residential”. Furthermore, if a property were "tenanted for residential purposes and a business was also operating from the property, then the appropriate rating category may be assessed as Category - C - Non-Residential”. (Direct quotes from Council Correspondence). TRC say that they are justified to do this with no consultation of Ratepayers and no consideration of the business and whether it is capable of such Rate increases. State Government guidelines encourage Councils to follow a procedure of consultation and to explain the benefits to the Ratepayers. Builders, Tradesmen, Masseurs, Home design architects, Pest Control operators, Family Day Care etc, anyone who runs a business from home is open to these Rate increases and the increases won’t be small.

This initiative appears to fly in the face of the strategy of Council to seek to grow the tourism accommodation sector (in our case) and the start-up business and promote entrepreneurs. The message to take away from this is that the TRC are punishing all business owners, regardless of size, type of business, financial position, etc. How will every type of business in the Atherton Shire be affected when small business can no longer afford to operate? The flow on effect to the Atherton economy is something we should be very concerned about. TRC say that they support small business and in our case Tourism, but where is the evidence. We’ve been operating in Atherton for 20 years and have never seen such a disregard to peoples difficulties. This is not just about rates and it is not just about business. We are talking about livelihood, regional economic stability and what we value in a democracy. It’s time we fought to get one back. We’re certainly not prepared to continue running our business under such a regime. The farmers showed that with numbers we can support each other and do what’s right for the people. We need to stand up and fight as a community, otherwise individual families are going to pack up and move away. Please help, contact your local councillor now and show your displeasure John and Helen Donovan ATHERTON

In our eyes, it is the primary role of the Local Government to represent the people. The Council is elected by the people, to operate not only in a legal but also in a fair and just manner. Supporting business, the region and the populace. We asked for support, were given support and then that support was withdrawn and we were hit harder. Small business is suffering on the Atherton Tablelands. To the people who run small business in and around their home & any other business, as you’ll also be indirectly affected, this message is for you. Small Business operating from their homes, are in the firing line to be singled out for huge rates increases. Our Residential homebased business recently objected to our exorbitant Rates. We were not given the right to be heard at a TRC meeting, even though we requested such a hearing in our objection notice. Our elected Divisional Councillor Katrina Spies and Mayor Paronella were both aware of this request. What is interesting, is that Mayor Paronella and Councillor Spies supposedly speak for and represent the people. Yet when asked, they clearly stated in writing, support for Council Officers making hard line decisions for them, to the detriment of the people/ business’ who put them in their present official position. The rates in question have increased by 95% in 7 years, 34% in the last

Fighting back over electricity costs FNQ paying more for power

Mareeba farmer Makse Srhoj wants something to be done about massive rises in power bills.

Bid to stop crippling power bills

By Rebecca Wallis

Several key bodies are calling for a reduction in power prices and held a forum in Mareeba last week to lobby local candidates in the lead up to the State Election. Electricity prices are crippling our local farmers and businesses, with one Mareeba canegrower reporting a bill increase of $50,000 a year since 2011. Makse Srhoj said he has had to ‘hold back’ with cropping due to the massive hike in rates he is slogged with yearly that in 2011 were $30,000 a year and are now $80,000 a year. “We haven’t made any changes to what we do,” he said. “We have to irrigate everything up here and the cost of that is affecting everything. “It affects the amount of people you employ and the businesses in town suffer. It filters all the way down.” Mr Srhoj attended the forum at the Mareeba Leagues Club last Wednesday. Mareeba Chamber of Commerce, Canegrowers, the Queensland Farmers Federation, Mareeba District Fruit and Vegetable Growers Association and

the Chamber of Commerce and Industry Queensland joined forces to host the forum and address the major issue of power prices. Key speakers and election candidates were invited to present to the forum including co-ordinator of the Queensland Electricity Users Network Jennifer Brownie. Ms Brownie has been instrumental in getting Mareeba businesses to take part in a survey to see what the effects of their power bills have been on the local economy. Nearly 50 per cent reported that they had a ‘high level of concern’ over the ability of their business to pay their power bills on time. “If that doesn’t make candidates shake at the knees, it should,” Ms Brownie said to election candidates who attended the forum. “Jobs are at risk. We are at the tipping point. “In 12 months’ time there will be thousands of jobs lost. Either we reduce power bills or we will see job losses.” Ms Brownie said prices had doubled in the past ten years and that regional Queensland was paying higher prices than south east Queensland.

www.theexpressnewspaper.com.au

‘There are stretch marks on the balloon and it’s about to burst,” she said. “It’s about how we can reduce pressure on the balloon.” Manager of Bundaberg Canegrowers Dale Holliss also spoke at the forum. He has been campaigning to reduce electricity prices. “In 2008 the way your electricity bills were calculated started to change,” he said. “It affected Bundaberg and growing sugarcane in that area meant we started to see some horrific power bills.” Mr Hollis formed the Queensland Energy Alliance to fight the rise in power bills. Dr Georgina Davis from Queensland Farmers Federation and manager of The Gateway Hotel Callum Foo also spoke about the effect of exorbitant power prices. Canegrowers, QFF and CCIQ are calling for steps to be implemented to reduce bills. These include writing down the regulated asset base by 50 per cent, removing hidden taxes, designing and implementing efficient tariffs, funding the solar bonus scheme from government revenue and disciplining generators’ bidding practices.

Regional Queensland households are being charged up to 20 per cent more than those in Brisbane, according to the Queensland Electricity Users Network. Tablelands based Jennifer Brownie from the network said business in the Far North are paying up to 30 per cent more than their south east counterparts. “Analysis of electricity offers on the Australian Energy Regulator’s Energy Made Easy website shows the difference,” said Ms Brownie. Cheapest offer with no discounts for a 4 person home in Coorparoo, Brisbane is $1,962 per year based on an annual consumption of 6,970 kWh. In comparison, a four person home in Cairns with the same level of consumption on Ergon Energy’s main residential tariff (Tariff 11) which is set by the Queensland Government pays $2,335 per year or $373 more per year. The cheapest offer with no discounts for a small business in

Coorparoo, Brisbane is $1,940 per year based on an annual consumption of 6,853 kWh. A small business in Cairns on Ergon Energy’s main small business tariff (Tariff 20) set by the Queensland Government pays $2,573 per year or $633 more for the same consumption. “On top of this, power bill pain is made much greater in regional Queensland due to the need to use air-conditioning during summer.” Most households and small businesses in regional Queensland are captive to the 100 per cent Queensland Government owned Ergon Energy. “In the last two years the Queensland Government increased power bills in regional Queensland by more than six per cent for homes and a massive 15 per cent or more for regional businesses – on top of the previous steep rises over the past 10 years,” Ms Brownie said. “The QEUN survey shows regional jobs are being lost.”

Have your say in budget spending Rate payers are being given an opportunity to have their say over how Tablelands Regional Council (TRC) spend the 2018/2019 budget. A Budget Allocator tool was launched last week on the TRC website and gives the community an opportunity to show which services they value the most. Tablelanders will be

able to review areas of discretionary spending, choose the priority areas where they want services maintained or improved and identify areas in which they are willing to see a decrease in services. The tool offers options to increase or decrease spending in areas such as infrastructure, waste, water and sewerage, community

planning and environment, asset management, organisational services and executive services and councillors. Users can then lodge their comments. The tool is used by other councils around the country and around the world. It is a conceptual tool for demonstration purposes. The feedback gained

will allow council to gauge what programs and services the community values most. Responses will form part of a report to Council that will assist in budget decision making. Mayor Joe Paronella said this will be one of the many tools used in the preparation and adoption of the 2018/2019 Budget and Operational Plan in June 2018.

“This is a chance for the community to have their say. We want to hear from all local residents,” urged Mayor Paronella. “Our Council aims to encourage participation in planning and decisionmaking processes in an innovative, coordinated and transparent manner. We are committed to building partnerships with a range

of stakeholders, as well as seeking greater community involvement in Council activities.” The tool will be available until January 20, 2018. “We have identified four key priority areas as a Council to work towards: strong economies, vibrant communities, smart centres and planning towards Council 2050,” Cr Paronel-

la said. “Community feedback will inform decisions for services to improve and evolve to meet the changing needs of our community.” Budget submissions can be made online via www. trc.qld.gov.au. Paper copies can be collected from, and returned to, Customer Service Centres.

Speaking up about domestic violence

By Rebecca Wallis

One female dies every week from domestic violence, a shocking statistic that Mareeba Community Housing is trying to change. Last Friday they held an event at the Leagues Club in honour of White Ribbon Day (November 25) with guest speakers including the 2016 Queensland Father of the Year and local police officers. “This year alone up to 48 women have died from domestic violence,” said Robert Larkin, supervisor for Mareeba Community Housing. “We have taken the oath to show the community that we don’t support vio-

lence against women and we are asking you all here today to do the same.” Guest speaker Gary Prior gave a harrowing speech about how he came to be named the Queensland Father of the Year in 2016. The indigenous Ingham local had seven children of his own when he adopted his cousin’s four children after he was imprisoned as a drug addict. “If I didn’t get my nephews out of there they would have ended up in the big house and they would have hung themselves,” he said. “We’ve changed these young boys around and now they’re giving back to the community.” Mr Prior had to fight to bring the children across the state border from New

South Wales to Queensland. At the time it was not possible to take a child that was a ward of the state acorss the border. But such was Gary’s determination to give the children a better future, he took his case to the High Court and won. Now the law has changed. Mr Prior said drugs and alcohol as well as a lack of employment were contributing factors to the reasons why violence against women is prevalent in the indigenous culture. “It’s about encouraging young men to grow up and love their women and their mum,” said Mr Prior. “We are providers and protectors. It’s not in our DNA to flog our wives and drink alcohol.”

2017 KP MANGO COMP! Mango farmer and MDFVGA president Joe Moro, Terry Montague from Lindsay Transport and The Express managing editor Carl Portella have come together to bring you this year’s KP Mango Competition.

Mango comp back for 2017 THE KP Mango Comp is back for another year and this time Mareeba District Fruit and Vegetable Grower’s Association and The Express newspaper have teamed up with Lindsay Transport and Lindsay Rural in their bid to find the Tablelands’ heaviest Kensington Pride mango. “We think it’s a great competition,” Mr Moro, MDFVGA president, said. “The thing to remember if you want to win this award is to make sure you get out and nurture your fa-

vourite tree.” Mr Moro said enthusiastic local farmers were sure to have another crack at this year’s competition, which was won in 2016 by Dimbulah’s Shandell Hilditch and son Weston. “Some of this year’s trees are a little bit light on, so the tree tends to overcompensate meaning you might see some pretty big, bad boys growing,” he said. “My prediction is this year we’re going to see bigger fruit than last year.” The Express managing

editor Carl Portella said it was fantastic the competition continued to be well supported. “We are happy to have the team from Lindsay Australia on board this year as major sponsors of the competition,” he said. “We are also happy to help the MDFVGA to promote their industry with a sense of healthy competition. We invite any farmer or backyard mango grower to join in the fun.” All mangoes entered must be photographed on

electronic scales, clearly displaying its weight and viewed by a member of The Express team or Mr Moro. Mangoes must not be tampered with in any way. Entries close on January 31 with the winner to be announced at the end of the harvest season. First place will win $500, second $300 and third $200. All mangoes will be retained by Mr Portella for verification and consumption.

Craig Crawford MP, Mayor Tom Gilmore and Bruce Williams (Director FGF) stopped off in Kuranda last Monday to admire the completion of the Kuranda Water Security Project. The project has brought increased water security for the community through a new 500kl concrete reservoir at Masons Road and demolition of the existing reservoir and construction of a new 500kl one at Warril Drive. The extra capacity will allow for new development in the region.

Development projects approved by TRC

Futurist Dr Colin Russo and Atherton Tablelands Chamber of Commerce president Christine Doan.

Introduction to futurism and NDIS

A fifty strong contingent of TRC businesses, local government leaders and leaders in the disability sector were treated to an introduction to futurism on November 16. New and exciting information on the arrival of the National Disability Insurance Scheme (NDIS) to the Tablelands was also presented in outline form. The Atherton Tablelands Chamber of Commerce (ATCC) and STartup

and Innovation Tablelands (ST) collaborated with the National Disability Scheme (NDS) Queensland to put on a stimulating and informative evening at the Atherton Golf Club. While feasting on the banquet put on by a team of golfers turned chefs, the assembled company were inspired and informed by three speakers and had ample time for Q and A. The NDIS general manager for Queensland,

Richard Nelson, gave a lively overview of the roll out of NDIS and what it will mean, not only to Tablelanders with disabilities and current disability providers, but also to the business community in general. ATCC President and MC for the evening, Christine Doan said, “Mr Nelson was thrilled with the quantity and quality of questions that popped at him from all sides out of the highly engaged audience.”

Crystal Caves celebrates 30 years in Atherton Since September 1987 The Crystal Caves attraction in the Tablelands’ town of Atherton has immersed visitors into its thrilling and fascinating underworld of minerology and semiprecious gems. From the time it opened, The Crystal Caves impressed visitors with its lifelike attraction of manmade caves built by René Boissevain to house his illustrious and slightly idiosyncratic collection of the earth’s treasure. The former mink farmer, tobacco grader and ‘croc’ shooter put all his entrepreneurial energy into creating the network of caves, tunnels, chambers and crawl spaces. The Crystal Caves has evolved over the years and now houses more than 600 pieces in 300sq metres of limestone cave lookalike. Now 80, René developed The Crystal Caves from a shopfront into one of the region’s most significant tourist attractions, visited by hundreds of

thousands of people a year. Mr Boissevain said he is proud of what they have achieved and says The Crystal Caves sparkle is just as bright, if not brighter than it ever was. Mr Boissevain’s daughter Ghislaine Gallo agreed the milestone is very satisfying, given the hard work and creativity all her family had put into getting the caves up and running, and then expanding to meet demand. Ghislaine, who accompanied her dad on many expeditions with her sister, is now sales and marketing director for the caves. Her father created a museum that combined the hard science of mineralogy with a fairy tale adventure land. Venturing in with a headlamp, visitors explore an underground landscape that mimic the exhibits usual location. “It is as natural a setting as possible for these priceless specimens from all over the globe.

“And it’s a museum where touching exhibits and taking photos is encouraged. Dad wants to share his enthusiasm for the stones and gems with the world,” Ms Gallo said. Part of the museum’s 30-year story is Rene’s Indiana Jones-esque hunt for the biggest and brightest gemstones, crystals, minerals and fossils which has taken him round the world. He has pursued fossilised eggs in Madagascar, selenite crystals from the Caves of Swords in Mexico, an ancient Lapis Lazuli carving in China and a 3.5-metre-tall amethyst in Uruguay. René began his museum career with rocks from Agate Creek in NQ which he took to his home country of Holland and built a collection he opened to the public. He returned to the Atherton Tablelands in 1977 and began dreaming of building a museum here. In 1987 The Crystal Caves opened, and was successful in creating an air

of mystery and exploration that kept visitors riveted. And René’s passion for the earth and its beauty and secrets is being passed on to younger generations. As one visitor noted on TripAdvisor: “My children have now chosen what career they want.... and now insist we pull over to dig at every dry creek bed on our travels to find fossils and crystals. We were all absolutely enchanted by the man made, very clever tunnel system and extensive collection of gems and fossils that were accompanied by brilliant information.” René Boissevain’s life work is probably summed up in that review. Crystal Caves is situated at Main Street, Atherton, with an additional retail boutique in Cairns showcaseing a curated selection of Crystal Caves’ jewellery, mineral specimens and natural gemstone carvings from around the world.

The Motor Trades Association of Queensland (MTA Queensland), the automotive industry’s peak body for Queensland, has launched the MTAiQ innovation hub. The MTAiQ is the first such facility in Australia to be focused on the automotive industry exclusively and was established in response to the enormous technological change sweeping through the industry. The iQ hub will bring together mentors, investors, coaches, commercial partners and industry experts to collaborate with both start-up businesses and entrepreneurs as well as established businesses looking to capitalise on the changing landscape of industry.

The iQ hub, located at MTA Queensland’s head office in Brisbane, offers a hi-tech home for fledgling businesses. High-speed internet access, first-class presentation and hot desk office facilities, as well as state-of-the-art audio visual equipment is all available to hub clients. Additionally, clients will have access to experts in the fields of ICT, business innovation, finance management, marketing and communications, and Australian law. According to Dr Brett Dale, the Group Chief Executive, the MTAiQ innovation hub will help establish Queensland as a centre of automotive innovation and create opportunities and growth that will have a positive effect on the industry and the wider community. “The technology coming to our industry - such as driverless vehicles, new electric vehicles and the way those vehicles are charged and the application

of virtual and augmented reality in business processes means that in a few years’ time, not too many businesses will look as they do today,” he said during the MTAiQ launch presentation last week. “By 2020 we will see significant changes to our industry and by 2022 the major impact to business will be here. And that is no time at all. More than ever, we need to collaborate to innovate and I believe this facility is totally relevant to where we need to be in the 21st century. “As a Group, MTA

Queensland is committed to leading in the innovation space. We are committed to driving opportunities for industry, supporting existing business to transform their business model to ensure they are postured for maximum opportunity, and to bringing in new start-ups that are relevant to our industry and that will service and add value not only to that industry but to our community in general.” To make an enquiry about the MTAiQ Hub please email info@mtaiq. com.au

making it the third largest household expense behind housing and food,” Mr Turner said. “Affordability of motoring is absolutely vital to Queenslanders, particularly for those living in rural or regional areas with little access to reliable public transport alternatives.” Mr Turner said RACQ wanted to see the elimination of stamp duty on new cars in Queensland, to save motorists around $170 million per year. “Unlike some other motoring taxes there’s no logical basis to

support the application of stamp duty on vehicles,” he said. “There’s no discernible link between the collection of stamp duty on vehicles and investment in road transport infrastructure or services. Scrapping stamp duty would increase vehicle turnover around the State leading to a fleet of more fuel-efficient and safer vehicles.” Mr Turner said RACQ also called for a three-year freeze on vehicle registration fees from July 2018. “In the three years following the

2011 registration freeze, motorists saved on average $32.95 per year,” he said. “However, in the three years following the

freeze, rego has jumped by more than double the rate of CPI.” Mr Turner also warned against cuts to Compulsory Third Party

(CTP) insurance premiums. “CTP is highly regulated and Queensland is the only State where CTP costs are lower than registration. If

there are cuts to the scheme it could fail, and then drivers will be left to foot the bill.”

The LAND Walkamin hosts Future Agro Challenge

David Davies, AgUnity, has taken out the national leg of the 2017 Australian Future Agro Challenge held in Walkamin on the Atherton Tablelands over the weekend, and will now contest the international competition in Turkey in 2018. The event kicked off on Friday night with a networking event on the premises of award winning local innovators, Natural Evolution and concluded on Saturday with a pitch competition and guest speakers at the beautiful Mt Uncle Distillery. AgUnity won with their idea to help increase incomes for the smallest farmers in developing countries via the use of blockchain technology.

Mr Davies described the win as a “great opportunity to share the AgUnity innovation with the rest of the world”. “At AgUnity we have found an amazing new way to enable millions of developing world farmers to lift themselves out of poverty. Our technology streamlines co-operative operations by putting a simple distributed cryptoledger mobile app into the hand of every small farmer” Mr Davies said. The AgUnity mobile app, is called “AgriLedger”, and the company will work with NGO’s who fund them, to give farmers smartphones with AgriLedger pre-installed, all free for farmers. Together with the NGO’s they will address

inefficiencies and AgriLedger will become an indispensable part of the farmers daily lives. AgUnity will transform rural communities all over the world, and in doing so it becomes the exclusive platform for directing billions of dollars of new economicgrowth in positive ways. FAC judge, Cameron Johns from Impact Innovation, said the competition drew a high calibre of entrants from all over Australia. “It’s amazing to see the passion and diversity in ideas that came through in the competition,” Mr Johns said. Special guest speaker and judge, Mr Sam Trethewey from SproutX travelled from Melbourne to be a major drawcard for the event. SproutX is the home

FAC finalists Peter Cummins (Atherton, The Farm Process), Gaurav Tyagi (Cairns, Pynco Agriculture), Anastasia Volkova (Sydney, Flurostat), Damian Zammit (Cairns, Watersave), David Davies (Brisbane, AgUnity), Helen Fielder (Koah, Clohesy Organics).

of Australian agtech and they seek to identify, fund and accelerate agtech’s leading startups. Organising team member, Jessica Fealy, from Startup Tablelands was thrilled with the success of

the Future Agro Challenge. “It is terrific to be able to showcase the amazing people we have here on the Tablelands who are already doing top things in the agtech space, along with bringing high quality com-

petitors tothe region to provide inspiration and knowledge about what the future may hold for the agricultural industry” she said. “The next Steve Jobs of the world will be a farmer, and I hope that person is

from the Tablelands!” FAC is a worldwide competition recognising innovative, commercially viable food and agribusiness start-ups that address regional, national and global challenges.

Farmer meets foodie app launched at National Ag Day

An innovative mobile phone app, created by North Queensland farmer, Erica Hughes, is set to revolutionise the paddock-to-plate experience for producers, commercial foodies and consumers.

Farmer Meets Foodie works in a similar fashion to dating apps, connecting producers with restaraunts, cafes and commercial food outlets. The app is in final stages of testing and is a natural progression of the

online movement, which was started to bridge the gap between primary producers and local consumers. “The motivation for Farmer Meets Foodie was simple: getting local produce on the plate, reducing

food miles and having the story behind how food was grown known to those who are eating it,” Ms Hughes said. “There is currently a huge interest in the paddock-to-plate concept,

however, from a commercial foodies’ point of view, this is not always easy to achieve.” “Farmers and chefs are both time poor and very busy making amazing food, so this app will be a very ef-

ficient way for them to connect directly.” A grant of $100,000 from the State Government’s Ignite Ideas Fund, has pushed development forward, with the primary focus on North Queensland

farmer and producers. “Our aim is to complete the next stage of testing and amendments within the next few months, and have the product ready for market not long after that,” Ms Hughes said.

DID YOU KNOW...

If Jesus said John 17-25 the world has not known thee and John says in 1st John 4-12 no man has see God at anytime. And Jesus describes God in the Secret Book of John as Illimitable, Unfathomable, Immeasurable, Unobservable, Eternal, Unutterable, who was Moses talking too? Maybe John 8-44 is the answer.

Margie’s students love swimming in her chlorine free pool.

Mareeba swim school owner-operator Margie Thorpe decided to build her own swimming pool in 2011 to cater for the “very young, easily distracted, and special needs” customers. But after spending up to seven hours a day submerged in chemically chlorinated pool water, Margie realised she was starting to lose her body hair. “I didn’t even have eyelashes,” she says. Margie believes the combination of corrosive pool chemicals and the fumes

PAGE 30 The Express, Wednesday, November 29, 2017

produced by the heated water in the enclosed space not only caused significant hair loss, but potentially triggered the two bouts of pneumonia she has suffered from since building her swim school pool. “I constantly smelt like chlorine and I do think it was getting into my lungs because I’ve had pneumonia twice in three years,” she says. After installing a saltwater chlorinator in her custom-built swim school pool Margie’s husband Shane

read an article about Hydroxypure. “Shane spent years researching different systems and he kept insisting that Hydroxypure was better than all of the others,” she says. “He was constantly looking, because, as the pool is basically in a large tin shed, he wanted to preserve the shed as well as me.” Since Hydroxypure was installed at Margie’s Swim School in April 2016, Margie says not only has all of her hair grown back but she

has had positive feedback from her clients. “I teach a six-month old infant, who has dreadful eczema, the poor thing, and the mother told me that she doesn’t have to apply any medication for two days after swimming in Hydroxypure,” she says. Margie teaches many children diagnosed on the autism spectrum and interestingly, she says they are fascinated with the texture of the water. “The ozone that’s coming into the pool produces

tiny bubbles, and the kids are fascinated with the texture of the water and how soft it makes their skin feel,” she says. “It shimmers like silver.” Margie’s Swim School has received rave reviews. “I am now teaching the children of the children I once taught – that’s two generations of swimmers in the one family,” she explains. “One of the joys I get is seeing the mums, dads and grandparents spending one-on-one time with their young children.”
