IT is the end of an era as one of Mareeba’s most well-known and reputable small businesses closes its doors.

Tableland Video will close down this month after being in operation for more than 40 years, a decision owner and operator Noela Cook described as “very tough”.

Mrs Cook has been with Tableland Video for more than 35 years, of which included 10

years as an employee prior to owning the business which she has done for the past 25 years.

“I have absolutely loved my time at Tableland Video,” Mrs Cook said.

“It’s been my life – I have been working seven days a week for a number of years now and it has become very hard.

“It is time to go.”

Mrs Cook takes great pride in her ability to keep her video

store competitive in what has been such a volatile industry in recent years.

“I was able to out-survive a number of bigger video stores in Mareeba,” she said.

“Unfortunately there’s not many of us around anymore, however I can look back and say owning Tableland Video has been so rewarding.

“I was lucky enough to work under Cheryl Emmerson while I

was here, and she taught me so much and helped me make the business what it is now.

“She still plays an integral part in my life to this day.”

Mrs Cook said she wanted to thank all of her loyal customers.

“To those who have supported me for the last 25 years and more, I would like to say I’ve loved and enjoyed serving you but time has come to close Tableland Video,” she said.

“I loved everything about Tableland Video and it is because of the people, Mareeba is such a wonderful community.”

Tableland Video started a closing down sale on Monday, and Mrs Cook said everything is on sale and everything must go.

Mrs Cook has embodied the exceptional spirit Mareeba possesses for so many years and The Express would like to wish her a happy retirement.

Chamber opposes Cook office closure

Plans in place for community hub

THE Mareeba and Memorial Bowls Club’s land and facilities could soon be home to a multipurpose recreation and events hub after the Mareeba Shire Council (MSC) announced they are seeking funding to develop the site.

In a press release courtesy of MSC, it stated that Mareeba Shire Council will enter into an agreement with the Mareeba and Memorial Bowls Club Incorporated to acquire the land and facilities on Anzac Avenue, to develop a

hub for community services and activities including sport and recreation, library service and other associated community activities.

Mareeba Shire Council Mayor Tom Gilmore said that while the proposal put forward is exciting, it is dependent on securing funds before the development can proceed to the next stage.

“Various components will need to be costed for a grant application and cost estimates, following a Quantity Surveyors report being deemed acceptable

by Council when presented,” he said.

“Then the grant application must be successful for the new and reconfigured facilities to proceed.”

The development will comprise of modifications to the main building which will accommodate for community services, events and training activities along with a space for community events and recreational activities.

Added to that, the develop-

ment will also include a multifaceted library service as well as a new clubhouse and synthetic covered bowling green.

The plan in place for a new and improved library is one of the components of particular significance to the community, as it will replace the services of the long-standing facility on Byrnes Street.

Cr Gilmore said Council has recognised that the size of the current library facilities in Mareeba is insufficient to meet the

growing demand from the community.

“Council has been considering alternative options for this service for quite some time, but until now we have not been able to find anything that is suitable and affordable,” he said.

Cr Gilmore said Council is hoping to see the development occur this year. A grant application will be submitted early this year while negotiations continue with the management committee of the Bowls Club.

The Mareeba Chamber of Commerce fears the representation rights of the Cook electorate will suffer with the relocation of the electorate office from Mareeba to Cairns.

Member for Cook Cynthia Lui announced last year she will move her Mareeba electorate office to Cairns – which is outside the electorate.

Chamber president Joe Moro said the office relocation was a “slap in the face” for Cook constituents.

“The Member for Cook gave a promise at a debate in the lead up to the 2016 Queensland Election that should she be elected to office, that an electorate office would remain in Mareeba,” “Half way through the current term, we find the office is being relocated to Cairns.

“It’s hard to understand why, when we have worked so hard to position Mareeba as a strong retail, industrial, tourism and agricultural centre.

“Mareeba is also the gateway to the Cape York community and often the first port of call for business, social and community visits by residents from the Cape.

“So, it makes sense to have an electorate office in Mareeba, in what is essentially the heart of the Cook electorate – yet our elected leader thinks otherwise.”

Mr Clark said the automotive industry is one that has seen rapid change in recent decades, yet it’s a change he celebrates.

“Everything is done through a computer nowadays and has maybe gotten a little too technical for an old fella like me,” he laughed.

“In saying that, during this technological age the products have changed so much and im-

Mr Clark’s passion for the Atherton community is one to be admired, and although the curtains have been drawn on his time at Chano Trentin’s All Wheel Drive, he is still finding ways to positively impact the region.

“I’ve been a member of the Lions Club here since 1995 and I’m looking forward to continuing my work with them,” he said.

“The public were another big reason why I enjoyed it so much, as I don’t think I had one bad customer – we always had appreciative clientele who would come back to us regularly.”

CHANO Trentin’s All Wheel Drive has been an integral part of the Atherton community for decades, and the business said goodbye to one of its most wellrespected and longest serving employees as Terry Clark (pictured) retired last month.

Mr Clark was born and raised in a small town west of Mackay

called Eungella, and began applying his trade in the automotive industry as an apprentice panel beater in Mackay in 1963.

Over the following 19 years Mr Clark went on to work various jobs in the industry in both Mackay and Atherton, of which included owning and operating two of his own businesses.

Mr Clark began working at Chano Trentin’s All Wheel Drive in 1982 and was there as a sales manager until his retirement.

Mr Clark alluded to the important role his tenure at Chano Trentin’s All Wheel Drive has played in his life.

“I was at All Wheel Drive for the better part of 37 years and it

was a wonderful time,” he said.

“The Trentin family’s high moral and community values made the company so easy to work for and enjoy.”

“The public were another big reason why I enjoyed it so much, as I don’t think I had one bad customer – we always had appreciative clientele who would

Mr Clark didn’t just speak glowingly about the industry he’s worked in for more than 50 years, as he noted the great community spirit the town of Atherton boasts.

“Atherton reminds me of Eungella where I’m originally from,” he said.

“The friendly people and the climate have made this such a great place to live and I don’t have any plans to leave.”

“It is a very different place to what it was 30 years ago, however it is still a great community

“At the moment I’m quite involved with the Priors Creek Redevelopment which is something that I think will be of great benefit to the community.

“I believe everyone should be doing something in their community to improve it - you should never walk away from a community leaving it worse off than when you walked in.”

Mr Clark said now that he is retired he plans on doing some travel with his wife, and considering his efforts in the community and the high regard with which is he held amongst the Atherton public, it is well deserved.

Weston Hilditch was the previous leader with a mango tipping the scales at 1.458kg; however that has since been

Double electrocution in Tumoulin INVESTIGATIONS are ongoing into a tragic double electrocution that took the lives of a mother and daughter on a private property in Tumoulin on New Year’s Eve. Juanita Cole, 39, and her daughter Ava Cole, 10, were pronounced dead at the scene, and comes just four months after the

electrocution of a 15-year-old boy in Tolga.

Tablelands Patrol Group’s Inspector Russell Rhodes said the incident occurred at approximately mid-morning on Eriksen Road.

“It would appear from initial investigations that they came in contact with cabling attached to

a semi-trailer whilst it was connected to a battery charger,” he said.

“It is apparent that they have touched the cabling to move either over or under it and have died as a result.”

Tinaroo reaches 81%

The recent rain over the past weeks has given the region a hopeful start to 2019, with Tinaroo Dam reaching 81% at the weekend.

Citrus is fast becoming one of the most significant crops grown in the Tablelands region with a value of more than $55 million.

(DAF) Horticulturist Ebony Faichney said a recent grower survey revealed the rapid rise of citrus with 124 growers planting an area of more than 1100 hectares.

“The region is now Australia’s largest producer of limes, red-fleshed oranges and pummelos,” Ms Faichney said.

“The survey details a unique citrus farming landscape with most orchards less than 5 hectares in size and businesses often combining citrus crops with other fruit trees, particularly mango and avocados.

“This is in contrast to the tra-

ditional large scale citrus businesses found in southern production regions.”

Oscar Bugno, an active player within the far North Queensland citrus industry for the last 25 years, has long awaited a report like this.

“The citrus industry is a significant component of the Atherton Tablelands agricultural economy and is expanding,” he said.

“This report confirms the significant size of the local citrus industry and its contribution to our economy.

“We hope this information will bring new investment in research and development to support our local growers.

Mr Bugno said the domestic citrus market is fairly strong, but

we also need to look at exporting overseas to sustain our local lemon and lime industries in the longer term, like orange and mandarin have done.

“Biosecurity is also a priority to protect local growers. We must ensure we have a rigorous surveillance program and be prepared if any incursions were to occur,” he said.

Ms Faichney said she was overwhelmed by the response to the DAF survey.

“The value of this work lies within the volume of responses, and the 100% participation rate says it all,” she said.

“I am confident this information will make a difference to the future of citrus RD&E within the area.

“There are already plans in place to expand the lime, lemon, mandarin, grapefruit and pummelo industries. Ravenshoe escapee captured A 25-year-old Millstream man was recaptured last week after a dramatic three-day manhunt took place in Ravenshoe.

The small Tablelands town made national news over the New Year period when a man charged with serious sexual offences escaped from police custody.

The man was arrested on December 29, 2018 and had been taken to the Ravenshoe police station, where he was being

transferred into a more secure vehicle for transport to the Mareeba watch house.

During the process of the transferral, the man fled from police on foot into bushland nearby.

Police cordoned the area and brought in the dog squad for assistance, however were unsuccessful in locating the man after their search was hindered by heavy rain.

After more than three days

which covered an extensive search area, the man was arrested in the Millstream area last Wednesday.

The man was charged with one count of escaping lawful custody, eight counts of obstructing a police officer and two counts of trespass.

He appeared in the Cairns Magistrates court last Wednesday.

JANUARY

2018 started off rocky for TRC Mayor Joe Paronella as residents protested the high cost of rates in the region.

Meanwhile in Mareeba, approval was given to an application for a new $14 million dollar shopping centre for the town.

Bats were wreaking havoc across Mareeba with residents calling for long term action.

Local artist Tom Cosic put Mareeba on the map as he won first prize in a major art competition in New Zealand.

As children went back to school across the region, residents came together to save the future of Dimbulah’s Kindy.

Australia Day was all the rage with countless community members recognised and presented with Australia Day Awards across the Tablelands.

The community was in shock as Tablelands Regional Councillor Bronwyn Voyce unexpectedly announced her resignation. Little did the community know, Voyce’s resignation would be the first of two Councillor resignations at the TRC in 2018.

February saw a community pantry open in Mareeba to help those in need.

Nominations opened for the annual Wheelbarrow Race and local Michael Harnischfeger was named ‘face of the race’.

February saw turbulent times for the Mareeba Shire Council as workers went on strike over pay conditions.

The TRC rates blunder continued to be under the microscope and pressure mounted on Mayor Joe Paronella.

Mareeba Heritage Centre was named the number 1 place to visit by TripAdvisor users.

Knuth hears Paige’s fight to keep ag colleges open MP for Hill Shane Knuth has described the State Governments announced closures of the Longreach and Emerald Agriculture Colleges as the latest in a “systematic attack” on the Industry.

“First we had the vegetation management legislation that was rammed through the parliament immediately after the last election, then the funding cut to the School to Industry Program which teaches our youth the importance of the industry to Queensland.”

“Now we have the latest an-

nouncement of the closures of Agriculture Colleges. This ridiculous decision has far reaching, long-term implications for the rural industry.

Knuth said he finds it difficult to understand the decision.

“Around 30,000 businesses carry out agricultural activity in Queensland, which contributes more than $10 billion to the state's economy each year.

Surely that is reason enough to keep our Agriculture Colleges open, whatever the cost.”

“The hopes and dreams of

graduating students across the state who want to learn to work in the rural industry has been thrown out the window.”

Knuth has sponsored an EPetition put forward by Tablelands local Paige Hooley to reverse the Governments decision.

Paige, who is attending Vet Science at JCU was upset about the decision and immediately contacted her local MP Shane Knuth to launch an E-Petition.

“It's really disappointing the Government doesn't see teaching young people a career in

agriculture as valuable enough," said Paige.

“This not only affects people in and around Longreach and Emerald, but also school leavers across regional QLD who have worked hard to be able to attend Ag College and work the land.”

“It’s up to us to change the governments mind through people power and I ask everyone across the state to sign this petition by February 27.”

Agri future in in safe hands SCHOOL graduates were announced winners of the 2018 Agricultural Futures Awards at a recent function in Cairns.

The awards, sponsored by FNQ Growers, Howe Farming and Tableland Canegrowers, in conjunction with the Business Liaison Association (BLA), are offered to students in Year 12 who wish to pursue a career in an agricultural related field at tertiary level or with a registered training organisation.

Tully school graduate Claire Lowe was named the winner of the 2018 Agricultural Futures Award receiving the $1200 first prize bursary.

Second place was awarded to Tegan Jennings, Mareeba, who received $800, and Atherton’s Bradley Mather, collected $500.

Workforce Network Far North Queensland Manager, said the judges were impressed with the calibre of students who applied for the awards, in particular, the six students shortlisted.

“Each of the students shortlisted demonstrated their desire and passion to pursue a career in agriculture,” Ms Kruss said.

“It shows the work of various organisations, including FNQ Growers, our awards sponsors and the likes of Warren Giffin from Tully State High School, in promoting careers in agriculture, is paying dividends.

“The future of our agricultural industries is in safe hands.”

Ms Kruss thanked the Business Liaison Association for the role they play in providing secondary students in the region with opportunities to grow and further their education.

EXPRESS SPORT PORT Atherton off to top start in 2019 with win over Barron River Atherton kicked off the New Year on a winning note with a 30 run win over Barron River in their Cricket Far North T20 match at Loder Park on Saturday.

Batting first, Dan Parnell wasted no time ticking the score over for Atherton with an entertaining 97 runs off 54 balls which included nine 4's and five 6's. Tom Boorman contributed with 20 quick runs, and Atherton closed their innings 7-159.

Atherton's opening bowlers Seppe Barletta 2-21 and Dylan Pettingill 1-24 took early wickets. Tom Boorman 3-18 and Dan Parnell 3-24 kept the pressure on restricting Barron to 9-129 at stumps.

Catch of the day went to Mason Blaney for his great onehanded grab at mid-on.

Qld Country battle it out in Victoria THE Australian Country Cricket Championships started over the weekend in Shepparton and saw a veteran player from the Tablelands make the trip to country Victoria to compete.

Michael Salerno, a spinning all-rounder from the Atherton Cricket Club, joined fellow players from the Cricket Far North competition in representing Queensland Country.

After starting the tournament well with a strong win over South Australia Country, they struggled to keep that form as they were beaten convincingly at the hands of New South Wales Country and Victoria Country.

Despite what has been an inconsistent showing thus far, Queensland Country will be looking to finish with a solid performance today as they are scheduled to play their final fixture of the tournament against New South Wales Country at Princess Park.

EXPRESS SPORT PORT Preseason kicks off next week PRESEASON training for the Mareeba Gladiators’ senior outfits begins next Tuesday as they prepare for the 2019 Cairns District Rugby League competition.

With a committee, coach and some notable signings coming on-board, solid foundations appear to be in place heading into the regular season which kicks off in March.

The Mareeba Gladiators’ newly appointed coach Terry Aquilina said he looks forward to getting preseason underway.

“I decided to start preseason a little later just to let the players enjoy their Christmas and New Year break,” he said.

“At this stage I’m not sure on what the numbers will be like, but hopefully there will be a good turn-out.

“I expect everyone who wants to play to be there for the first training session next Tuesday.”

Preseason Training will start on Tuesday, January 15 at 6pm at Davies Park.

High hopes for Harper

Gladiators host meet and greet With preseason training starting next Tuesday, senior Mareeba Gladiators players will have the opportunity to get together for a meet and greet this Friday night at the Mareeba Leagues Club.

Mareeba Gladiators A-Grade coach Terry Aquilina said it is an informal gathering and anyone who wants to come along is welcome.

“We encourage past and present players, committee members and sponsors to come along and have a beer together as a club before we start the 2019 season,” he said.

The meet and greet will start at 6pm.

Eze Harper (pictured playing in England) has signed with the Mareeba Gladiators in 2019.

The Mareeba Gladiators welcomed a new addition to their senior squad last week after they announced the signing of Eze Harper.

Originally from the UK, Harper is a 6’3 centre who possesses speed and athleticism, and he is sure to add considerable spark to what is shaping up to be a promising core of outside backs for the Gladiators.

Harper’s rugby league resume’ is an impressive one, of which include stints with English professional and semiprofessional clubs Leigh Centurions, Sheffield Eagles and Barrow Raiders.

After applying his trade in the UK’s professional ranks for two years, Harper moved to Australia last year to play with the Shellharbour Sharks, helping lead the side to the South Coast Group 7 Premiership.

Harper said he looks forward to playing rugby league in the Far North.

“Coming up towards Cairns was something I always had in my travel plans,” he said.

“I had a look online and saw the Gladiators were a part of the Cairns competition, so I reached out to the club through someone I know and it went from there.

“I secured a job up here and I can’t wait to start training and to meet all the guys I’m going to be playing with.”

Despite only being 24 years old, Harper is hoping his time playing at a high level in England can be of value to the Gladiators.

“Hopefully I can bring some experience to the club,” he said.

“I’m also an extremely competitive person, so I’ll be making sure I give my full commitment to the team at training and on game day.”

Comparisons are often made between the standard of rugby league in the UK and Australia, and Harper noted one key difference he has noticed since playing Down Under.

“It is very physical over here,” he said.

“I haven’t noticed too great a difference in other areas of the game, however the physicality was something I realised straight away.”

Harper’s signing follows that of former Cairns District Rugby League Gold Medal winner Trent Barnard in December, and could signal the emergence of one of the competition’s most lethal centre pairings.
