Multi-million dollar development commences

DEVELOPMENT of the new multi-million dollar Lindsay Australia facility in Mareeba has started to take shape. Last Thursday, General Manager of Lindsay Rural Australia, Wolf Lorenz, travelled to Mareeba to inspect the site at the Mareeba Industrial Park and said they hoped to have the new facility up and running by the end of 2016. “Work on the new site has commenced and once building starts it should move along quite quickly; and we hope to be operating from here by December this year,” said Mr Lorenz. One of largest investments of its kind in the region, the new site located on 22.5 thousand square metres of land will allow Lindsay Rural and Lindsay Transport to further expand their operations and better service their client’s needs in the wider region. In six short years in this area Lindsay Australia has gone from a small business operation to now commencing development of a $9.5m state of the art facility. The new facility will have everything including chiller and freezer space and in a much larger capacity. “Located next door to the Visyboard site also under construction, this new logistics hub will offer growers in the region everything from farm supplies to packaging to cold storage and transport – ultimately a one stop shop for all our client’s needs,” Mr Lorenz said. “Significantly it is a monumental demonstration of the confidence that Lindsay Australia has in this region and when completed this facility will be the flagship store Australia wide.”

Disenchantment

Local election forum saw ratepayers alienated By Justin Fris RATEPAYERS throughout the Tablelands Regional Council jurisdiction were universally miffed by last week’s local election forum in Atherton. In an evening which was designed for ratepayers to learn more about potential councillor and mayoral candidates, the majority of the evening was spent enduring long-winded responses from sponsor-oriented questions – which left the audience overwhelmingly disenchanted. The audience eventually were able to have their say; however strict guidelines on questions

were outlined, given the nature of the recent events. MC Tony Whybird did a sterling job for the evening – especially given the lengthy format that he had to work with. Mayoral candidates Joe Paronella and Rod Marti set the benchmark from the off, providing clear and concise reasons behind their mayoral ambitions. “I’m offering myself as a mayoral candidate for the TRC, as I’m passionate about the region,” Mr Paronella said. “I’m concerned about the current state that our council is in. I’ve successfully managed my own

business over the past 45 years and I currently manage Trans North Bus and Coach. “Should I have the privilege of being voted in as Mayor on March 19, I will resign immediately from my position. “I also have eight years of local government experience as an elected councillor under the guidance of Jim Chapman.” He added: “We are all embarrassed and disappointed with the antics that have been going on with the current council. “I find no fault with the council employees – in fact, I admire their ability to serve the community, considering the disharmony going on around

them.” Mr Marti said: “I’m a farmer and a businessman. As the current councillor for Division 4, I have knowledge of the Local Government Act, along with local government regulations. “I understand the closeness of a council organisation. It’s my belief that the council needs to listen closely, try to listen, take action; and most of all, build respect. “With my qualifications in many organisations, my experience in agribusiness – I think I’m well qualified to become Mayor.” CONTINUED PAGE 3

Mareeba’s own completes gruelling endurance swim By Justin Fris MAREEBA-born Anne Pleash recently completed her fourth successful Rottnest Island swim, which is held annually in Western Australia. Ms Pleash – who is the chief of staff for Federal Member for Kennedy Bob Katter – completed the 19.7km swim in seven hours and 37 minutes. The event is highly anticipated by parochial Sandgropers (West Australians) each year, with several quality international and interstate entrants. Ms Pleash began her swim along the pristine coastline of Cottesloe Beach, heading in a westerly direction to Rottnest Island. “Endurance swimming is something that I use to really clear my mind,” she said. “It’s something that keeps me active over Christmas and is really good for building confidence.” Training for such an event naturally involves dedication and effort beyond the

bare minimum. Not only does the swimmer require physical fitness, they also must hold a strong mental outlook. “In a typical base week of training, I’m swimming approximately 40km per week, which equates to 10-12 hours per week. “A peak week would see me swim up to 65km per week, which can be up to 25 hours per week. But naturally due to my job in politics, time often is a factor each week.” A delighted Mr Katter praised Ms Pleash by saying: “All the team and community are very proud of Anne’s achievements. “In the 60 year recorded history of swimming across the Rottnest Channel, there have only been 1698 successful crossings. Very few people in Australian history have completed this swim and it is not far off the distance of the English Channel swim.” Ms Pleash said she was committed to a fifth Rottnest swim in 2017 – and hasn’t ruled out participating in 2017 Manhattan Island (New York City, USA) swim.

MORE often than not, it is not difficult to recognise someone who is elite. They are humble, put their head down and do the little things. Sure, they are talented. Yes, they have extraordinary ability. But they know their role within a team environment and can lift others around them. Last weekend saw two Mareeba State High School students (Katelyn Dickenson and Mitchell Booth) participate in the annual SHEP (State Honours Ensemble Program) NQ conference in Cairns. Along with students from Atherton and Malanda State High, Katelyn and Mitchell spent time learning and performing music under tutorage from some of the finest conductors within the industry. The Express caught up with the pair during their weekly musical practice on Wednesday morning,

where they were fine tuning their craft. “The event has over 80 people in the band – and you get to work alongside a lot of instruments that you don’t normally see,” Katelyn said. “It’s with conductors who are really qualified with heaps of experience.” Mitchell added: “We don’t know prior to the event what the music is; it’s a surprise. We don’t get the pieces until Friday night.” MSHS music teacher Kirsten Towne said the event would be a tremendous challenge for both students, but was confident that they would give a good account of themselves. Music offered at the school is extremely inclusive, with music students from Mareeba State School given an opportunity to further their development by participating in the sessions with older children.

Ratepayers alienated at forum From Page 1 OTHER mayoral candidates included Peter Hodge and Paul Kneubuhler, who pitched their respective visions for the TRC. Mr Hodge – who is running under the ‘Team Tablelands’ banner – said: “My aspirations is to lay the foundations for a new Tablelands Regional Council, based on meaningful public engagement. “Residents will be able to feel that the new TRC has their interests at heart. And will work diligently to work on the outcomes that are required. “I’ve had 20 years of local government experience. 16 years as a council staff worker and four years as a councillor.” Mr Kneubuhler said: “Basically, my interest in this election, being the underdog, I haven’t had the experience the other three candidates have. “They are either in it or have been in on council before. I’ve spent 40 odd years in the Innisfail area, 20 years in the south east corner and been up here (Ravenshoe) six or seven years.” Once all councillors had introduced themselves, they were asked three business and tourism-based questions from event sponsors. Each candidate was given three minutes per question. With close to 20 candidates on stage, it made for an arduous segment of dialogue. Once the responses had been completed for question one, a sizeable collective groan filled the auditorium. Mr Whybird professionally took this feedback into account and rejuvenated the remainder of the component, much to the relief of the audience. Respective councillor candidates spoke about a variety of issues across the night, pitching to

TRC mayoral candidates (L-R) Rod Marti, Paul Kneubuhler, Joe Paronella and Peter Hodge after the forum had concluded.

voters why they should be elected. Additionally, TRC ratepayers can now sleep easier knowing that ‘General Business’ will return to meetings post–March 19, after all mayoral candidates said they would amend the current TRC ‘Standing Orders’ to include it. There was collective mirth amongst the audience when Mr Hodge said he would sup-

port the reinstatement of ‘General Business’ – considering he voted with Mayor Rosa Lee Long and Cr Geoff Stocker to scrap the concept last August. “Yes, definitely, it will come back,” Mr Hodge said. “There will be seven councillors on this council; so with a bit of luck, all the councillors won’t use ‘General Business’ to throw mud.”

Knuth addresses term debate By Justin Fris MEMBER for Dalrymple Shane Knuth addressed TRC ratepayers at last Monday evening’s TRC election forum at Atherton State High School. Mr Knuth informed the audience about the upcoming state referendum, which will be held in conjunction with the local government election. Each voter will be asked on whether they believe state politicians and governments deserve a four year term, or remain at three years (which is the current duration). Mr Knuth acknowledged both sides of the argument however said he was opposed to Qld state politicians having a four year

term in government. “The reason why I voted against the Bill before the house, is because I believe the 87 MP’s (Member for Mt Isa Robbie Katter also voted against) who voted for the ‘Yes’ case were only doing so for job security.” He added: “You are not going to hear much about the ‘No’ case, because there are only two MP’s pushing the ‘No’ case and 87 pushing the ‘Yes’ case.” Excluding Mr Knuth, all other Far North MP’s (Billy Gordon, Craig Crawford, Rob Pyne and Curtis Pitt) are pushing the ‘Yes’ case. “I ask, can we trust executive government for another year? Four year terms mean that Queenslanders will have to wait longer to vote out a bad government.”

I Believe in Cruz, and believed in his potential. “I try not to see the things that he might not be able to do, but encourage him to do the things he likes or wants to do. “Cruz does not gift you with clever conversation. He does not give you answers to your everyday questions, nor does he give us understanding as we know it. “What he gives us is so much more valuable – he gives us opportunities instead. “Opportunities to discover the depth of our character, not his; the depth of your love, your commitment, your patience, and your abilities, and the opportunity to explore your spirit more deeply than you imagined possible. “He will drive you further than you would ever go on your own. “You see the longing in his eyes to get out of this chair, to run and play like other children. “There is much we take for granted.” Sonja added that despite Cruz’s different requirements, many other needs remain the same.

“He wants the toys on the shelf, the need to go to the bathroom and he is dependent on us in these ways,” she said. “His gift to us is to make us more aware of our great fortune, our healthy back and legs, our ability to do for ourselves. “Sometimes people appear not to notice him; but he always notices you. “As I lay my head down on the pillow at night, exhausted from the days events, I find myself saying thank you to God for blessing me with such an amazing child who’s taking his first real steps in this big world. “As I look down at his peaceful face sleeping, I feel such an overwhelming feeling of love, joy and pride, and I find myself saying: “I can’t wait to wake up and do it all again.” The Bailey family are very grateful for the support that Jody Grant (Cruz’s teacher aide), Pina Carroll (MSS – Head of Inclusive Practices) and Katie Martin (Cruz’s teacher) have provided over the journey. Several well wishers congratulated Cruz after the assembly had concluded. Ms Carroll said: “We are very proud of Cruz. New registration requirements for Queensland fuel sellers The Queensland Parliament passed legislation to introduce a biofuels mandate from 1 January 2017. After this date, the Queensland fuel industry will have a legal requirement to sell a minimum amount of biofuels. All fuel wholesalers and retailers who sell fuel in Queensland are now legally required to register their business and provide an initial report on fuel sales. Reports can be submitted after 1 April 2016 and must be recieved by 30 April 2016. Fuel sellers will submit information through the new Fuel Sellers Register available via the Department of Energy and Water Supply website at www.dews.qld.gov.au. Fuel sellers need to provide information about their business location, along with their fuel types and the volume of fuel sold. Fines and penalties may apply to fuel sellers who fail to provide a report. The information collected will help determine which fuel sellers are liable under the mandate.

Staff at the Endeavour Foundation Industries in Mareeba are committed to assisting local businesses through quality workmanship. By Justin Fris

A local team of hardworking staff are committed to providing quality service and workmanship – and they are looking forward to helping you. Under the guidance of Ross Menniti (foreman) and Sue Wood (employment coach), several local residents with disabilities have been provided with a safe, inclusive employment environment. Whether it might be assorting gift boxes for a coffee shop, packeting nuts and bolts or even refurbishing aeroplane headphones – the Endeavour Foundation Industries (EFI) Mareeba team get the job done right. “All staff get to complete a broad range of workshop activities,” Mr Menniti said.

“No job is too big or small for the team. “For example, we help process industrial cleaning clothes and supply a large range of pegs and stakes to several local businesses. “These are particularly popular at the moment given the local council elections and with our real estate companies.” Mr Menniti said that EFI had formed a special alliance with several major companies in recent times, including the Mareeba Coffeeworks. Staff are particularly busy between Monday and Friday, but never waver in enthusiasm or attitude. Ms Wood commended the efforts of the Tablelands Regional Council, who had formed a solid partnership with EFI in Mareeba. “Transport is provided for our staff, so they

Local Chambers of Commerce optimistic about new-look TRC SEVERAL local not-for-profit organisations across the Southern Tablelands are optimistic about future long-term projects in the Tablelands Regional Council jurisdiction. Some say the darkest hour always comes before its dawn – and these organisations believe a new united council could yield major dividends. Ravenshoe’s indoor pool proposal has been in the news of late. Doreen Mortimer, a strong proponent over the years, said: “We’re planning a state of the art swimming centre of high economic and environmental efficiency that we hope to provide not only a community facility but also an economic boost for the town.” Atherton’s Prior’s Creek precinct has a consultant already on board and the support of the present council which is set to continue in spades under the new council. Atherton Tableland Chamber of Commerce (ATCC) vice president Christine Doan said: “ATCC has worked closely with TRC on initial development of this

precinct which promises the wonderful benefits of combining environmental, social and economic upticks. “Imagine a great new family friendly recreation space for locals that will also appeal to tourists nestled next to town with cafes and shops and even a cold beer right handy. A big plus for the whole Tablelands.” The Malanda Chamber of Commerce (MCOC) has proposed an Australian Tropical Agricultural Precinct (ATAP) for its own triple bottom line reinvigoration project. Samantha Banks, secretary of MCOC, has been party to the complexities of trying to get such a project off the ground. Ms Banks said: “I have seen what economic impetus such a project could potentially give to Malanda’s town centre and its surrounds. I feel strongly that each community should receive encouragement to explore its own unique future as a part of one unified Tablelands.” Many ratepayers appear to be in agreement and are eager for a fresh beginning.

First sod turned for Mareeba sporting precinct Stakeholders gather with Member for Barron River Craig Crawford to turn the first sod on Saturday. By Justin Fris

LOCAL sporting organisations and stakeholders gathered at Davies Park last Saturday afternoon, for the first official ‘turned sod’ of the ‘Bendigo Bank Recreational Precinct’. Facilitated by the Mareeba and Dimbulah Bendigo Community Bank, the project will be carried out over several stages. Stage one will see several ball courts constructed, which will be utilised primarily by the Mareeba Basketball and Netball Association. Along with a canteen and additional storage space, the Mareeba Cricket Club will benefit with some new practice wicket nets and a new pitch. Several Mareeba Shire councillors were in at-

tendance for the ceremony, along with the Member for Barron River Craig Crawford (no attendance by the Member for Cook), who filled in for the Sport Minister, Curtis Pitt. Delivering the message on behalf of Mr Pitt, he said: “It is an exciting project, for which we are sure will bring lasting benefits to the local community here in Mareeba. “The project was put together to help establish new outdoor recreation spaces which cater to outdoor sport and recreation activities. “Stage one includes construction of four netball and basketball courts, with poles for competition lighting. “A concrete cricket wicket with a synthetic surface, practice pitches and nets, a canteen, ad-

ditional storage space and a unisex disabled toilet. “In its initial stage, the project will directly benefit more than 600 people.” Mareeba Netball Association president Connie Martens said she was happy that the project had commenced. “This is a really exciting time for us, because today’s event really means that construction can start,” she said. “We were given timelines for when construction begins (12 weeks) – if that comes on line and on time, we’re going to be moving in over here after that, so this is really a time for celebration.” Mareeba Basketball Association president Silvano Ruggeri was equally optimistic about bas-

ketball’s future at the facility. “The relocation will really cut our time down,” he said. “We’ll have four courts all on at once, which will be nice. “Currently we spend three days over there at the moment (completing weekly matches), so here it will probably go down to two days or even one.” Sporting facilities are created to provide an assortment of long-term economic, health and social legacies. It is due to the foresight of dedicated local stakeholders (especially Mareeba and Dimbulah Bendigo Community Bank) that this dream has come to life.

Entsch responds to taskforce FEDERAL Member for Leichhardt Warren Entsch hasn’t ruled out the possibility of a catastrophe reinsurance pool or a mutual to address the north’s insurance challenges, despite the final report of the Northern Australian Insurance Premiums Taskforce focusing on mitigation. “I’m glad the report has now been released, we’ve been waiting for it to be made public so that we can start talking about the findings,” Mr Entsch said. “The report is very comprehensive and includes a lot of useful information moving forward, but in my personal view there’s too much focus on mitigation which is the ‘easy way out’ for the insurance companies. “I still believe that some model of catastrophe reinsurance is probably the better way to go, but we can’t forget that there are responsibilities from other sec-

tors too. “The State Government has an obligation to look at its strata legislation, issues such as the requirement for body corporates to insure buildings for full replacement value rather than market value. “It’s also the State Government that imposes stamp duty, which is basically a tax on a tax and highly inefficient. “Then there’s the insurance companies themselves – after an event, they bring in their own assessors and use contractors from outside the region, which are all multipliers to the inflated rebuilding costs. “The insurance companies also say the biggest cost from an event is in the many small claims for damage caused by outdoor furniture, shade sails and fallen trees.”

Positive working environments achieve success

Member for Cairns Rob Pyne believes management should harness their staff’s positive energy in the workplace.

By Justin Fris REGARDLESS of what industry you are in, the importance of having a happy and healthy workforce seems fairly obvious. However from time to time, some organisations appear to lose sight of this – and hazardous situations for both management and staff can occur. Local business leaders across the Far North uniformly agree about the importance of local businesses achieving harmony in the workplace. Member for Cairns Rob Pyne – who has feverishly campaigned for staff rights across several tiers of government and business – said it was important for senior management to embrace a positive approach with staff. “It’s very true that having a positive workforce can often translate into positive results and productivity for the organisation,” he said.

“It’s important for management to harness the positive energy of the staff and let them do their job.” Mr Pyne added: “In some local council’s of late, we have seen councillors and mayors reaching down into administration operations, which doesn’t do anyone any favours.” Currently employing two staff, Mr Pyne relies on them immensely, especially while in Brisbane with parliamentary commitments. “It’s very important for us to sit down each week and talk about things,” he said. “Not only about pressing issues, but to celebrate our wins. “Togetherness in the workplace is very important.” Mareeba District Fruit and Vegetable Growers Association president Joe Moro said local growers often benefited from providing a positive environment to their workforce.

“A positive working environment often sees more productivity and good attendance,” he said. “In turn, this often sees staff return the following season – which means employers don’t need to train new staff.” Mr Moro added: “Generally it can be a tough environment with the heat in our region, but a happy workforce can often remain more positive in certain situations. “It’s important that good guidelines are put in place. This allows staff to be happy, but aware of their responsibilities.” Business consultants are worth their weight in gold throughout the industry and Inspire Business consultant Michael Lawrence is no different. Throughout his career in the business industry, Mr Lawrence has observed organisations across a variety of sectors. “I’m constantly aware of the improvements that can flow when a business’s staff are engaged and feel valued,” he said.

Councillors – we are your boss I read with interest The Express’s front page story on “Misconduct allegations tabled in state parliament”, in the February 24 edition. From reading the information tabled by Rob Pyne, it seems the independent assessor report was not dealt with in a satisfactory manner by Tablelands Regional Council (TRC). There were serious claims made against a current sitting councillor. Some of the allegations were substantiated, but it seems that due process was not followed according to the legislation by council administration. The TRC CEO is terming this a leak of confidential information, when it should in my opinion be termed a cover up. I thought that it would be to the councillor’s benefit if they were innocent of the allegations levelled at them by a TRC employee, to have these charges independently investigated to clear their name. Instead, we have a cover up and a dragging of feet by council administration for over four months to try and keep a lid on the matter so as to not hurt their chances of being elected in future local government elections in the region. This sort of behaviour would not be tolerated in private business let alone a public body like the TRC. There needs to be more open governance so local ratepayers and voters in the TRC area can have confidence in their elected representative. We can only hope the new council is more productive and easier for ratepayers to work with than this council has been. The people filling these public positions are there to administer for the benefit of the whole shire - not to gain kudos or personal benefit for the people filling these elected positions.

Being a councillor is not about power and position, it is about service and the betterment of the community they represent. Richard Holme, Malanda

Fris is an asset to our region Reflecting on the content of local papers especially in the lead up to local government elections, I feel compelled to acknowledge the quality journalism presented in The Express. Congratulations on maintaining an independent local paper. Your young journalist Mr Justin Fris is actively engaged in the community and is his intelligence and professionalism is an asset to the whole Tablelands. The Express has become the only local paper right across the Tablelands that we can rely on for balanced journalism and a glimpse at the truth. From local councils to local characters The Express deserves recognition for it’s independent assessment and reporting of the issues that actually matter in our region. The traditional two ‘local’ papers have lost their relevance and are of no value other than lighting the fire in winter. I look forward to the day The Express grows into a twice weekly publication. Stay strong in the face of adversity and print more papers so I don’t have to share mine! Des and Lyn O’Connor, Malanda

Sorenson backs APA Re: the Letter to the Editor, March 2, titled “The APA has gone backwards”, signed by

TOTALLY COMMITTED TO THE COMMUNITY

Doug Seawright of Atherton. Whilst Mr Seawright has taken a cheap political shot at Mayor Lee Long and Councillor Stocker, he in particular has seemed to single out Councillor Peter Hodge, a mayoral candidate for the forthcoming Tablelands Regional Council (TRC) elections - whilst at the same time denigrating the hard-working unpaid volunteers comprising the committee of the Atherton Performing Arts (APA). He has also taken a swipe at the tsunami of supporters of the APA re: the efforts last year to assist in successfully retaining the nowheritage listed and World War II (WWII)-constructed Atherton Silo Centre APA igloo complex in-situ, and shown his complete disregard and contempt for World War II heritage on the Atherton Tablelands. But let me clarify some matters. I am not a supporter of Cr Hodge. I am a TRC ratepayer and a staunch supporter of the APA group. I am a strong advocate and willing helper for the preservation of the history and heritage relevant to Australian wars and conflicts, and especially the preservation of Atherton Tablelands WWII history and heritage. And I do, and always will, stand up for the volunteers of all organisations in any community, for it is those volunteers who form the strong and basic fabric of those communities - not developers. Despite Mr Seawright giving the impression to me that he is in the same camp as the Atherton Silo Centre developers, Tablelands Investments (TI), many of his details however are incorrect. His statement: “Also helping people escape the Coles-Woolworths retail food domination”, is strange, given that the worst-kept secret on the Tablelands was that TI did not intend to overnight demolish or dismantle and remove the Igloo simply for supposed extra carparks, but to create the amount of carparks and space required by a multinational corporation, believed to be Coles / K Mart. Further, as Mr Mike Shakes, owner of the local and independently-owned Atherton IGA store, stated publicly, despite TI trying to push him out of the premises for some time, he was not moving. Mr Seawright is also incorrect in stating that the Igloo came from America, and is “long past its use by date”. The facts are, the pre-fabricated steel components were manufactured by ARMCO in Australia, and the structure is in a very sound and solid condition, has been well maintained at great cost by the APA people, still serves a very useful and popular community purpose in a central Atherton

and Tablelands location, and will last many more years yet to come. Apart from the carrot of $200,000 offered by TI to assist with costs in demolishing or removing and relocating the Igloo, I truly don’t know where Mr Seawright believes that the minimum $2 million cost for a new community entertainment centre would be coming from readily in the foreseeable future. If he has had anything to do in recent times with attempts at raising grants and donations monies for various projects, he would surely know that all levels of Government are cash-strapped, the money cakes are getting smaller, the pieces of the money cakes are also getting smaller given the ever-increasing numbers of applicants, and the general community is doing it tough; therefore the public donations are not flowing like they used to. After the Interim Lease was awarded by vote, apparently TI then commenced negotiations with the State Government to buy the land from underneath the igloo, but that vain and desperate attempt at getting the land for their own purposes also failed. The land is declared by the Government for “Community Use” only. The igloo is going nowhere, but there is still no reason, if TI are communityminded (like they insist they are), that they cannot further develop the Silo Centre whilst incorporating the heritage-listed igloo into the plans – along the lines of many contemporary developments around Australia. The political shot at Cr Hodge by Mr Seawright, using the APA “saga” as a vehicle for his purposes, was not necessary. Why? Because in my opinion, the new TRC after March 19 will comprise six councillors elected (one already elected unopposed) from those persons who are standing as Independent Candidates; and will be headed by Joe Paronella as Mayor anyway. Thus a clean sweep of the Council chambers and I am confident that a new and vibrant TRC will take on board very early the issue of a long-overdue purposebuilt community entertainment centre for the Region. A question that apparently has still not been answered - who was the person within Council who notified the TI people (unbeknown to the APA people) that it had been discovered internally that no legal lease was in existence between the TRC and APA? That obviously deliberate leak was the catalyst for TI then making an immediate move on the igloo site. That is where the “saga” started. Perhaps Mr Seawright may wish to make an open and public apology to the APA volunteers and their supporters, re his derogatory remarks – and then for us all to move on from the “saga”. The ceremony, organised by Mareeba Rotary, officially acknowledged the life and community contribution of Cedric. Cedric served an amazing 51 years in Rotary and achieved 100 per cent attendance during that time. Cedric also served 23 years on Mareeba Shire Council – eight years as a councillor and 15 years as Mayor. A plaque on the Mareeba Rotary Memorial Rock with Cedric’s name was officially unveiled by two of his sons. The gathering also heard heartfelt speeches dedicated to an amazing man who gave so much and changed so many lives.

Talk to a team who knows how to win ARE you interested in learning more about self-managed superannuation funds? Are you unsure about if you are making a wise choice with your hard earned money? If you answered yes to one or more of the above, do yourself a favour and book an appointment with local financial advisor, Ross Cardillo, at Ross Cardillo Financial Services (186 Byrnes Street, Mareeba, Ph: 4092 4129). A man who has been recognised previously as one of the top 10 financial planners in Australia, Cardillo is joined by Client Services Manager, Margaret Blakey, who both know the superannuation industry inside out. “Self managed super funds have a place in investment structuring within people’s retirement planning,” Mr Cardillo said. “Unfortunately, the internet and the media provide a great deal of misinformation – and people are, in some cases, deliberately misled into thinking they must have a self managed superfund; and it would be to their benefit. “A great misconception that I often hear is that a self managed superannuation fund is cheaper to run and operate than a retail fund.” Mr Cardillo added: “If you have $2 million in your personal self managed superfund account, then it may be cheaper than a retail fund.

“In most instances though, a properly managed RAP account (retail fund) is much cheaper than a self managed super fund. “Again, I hear people tell me that it is cheap to run their super fund– but when I see how they are running it, it is non-compliant.” “What people must understand is, if you’re running your own self managed super fund, the rules that apply to AMP, Colonial First State, the Commonwealth Bank, Aust Super; they apply to you. “Most people do not have the expertise and training to successfully manage their own superannuation fund. “However if they employ professionals such as myself – with our guidance and assistance – things can run very smoothly.” Mr Cardillo has been a financial advisor since 1988. Over those 27 years, he has been informed of horror stories that people have incurred due to misguidance. “My advice is to speak to someone who is qualified and is professional within the superannuation fund space (not a bank),” he said. “In my office, I’m qualified and Margaret has a great deal of expertise as she was managing a self managing super fund administration business.

“Margaret is very well trained and dedicated in that field. Please contact me if you have any enquiries, because at the end of the day, most of the self managed super funds I see set up are set up for the wrong reason. “I say the ‘wrong reason’, because the trustees of the fund are the ones who receive the least benefit. “Normally the ones who set the fund up overcharge and then the ongoing administration is also far too expensive for what they are receiving.”

forts in this regard and said: “They have done exceptionally well in achieving this standard in such a short period of time. “To more than double our score in less than 18 months shows our commitment to ensuring we have a safe workplace; and as a council we will work at continuously improving in the area. “Workplace health and safety is not negotiable. He added: “We all have a responsibility to guarantee the health and safety of our workforce including contractors and volunteers.” Mr Barton concluded his presentation by saying: “Congratulations to Mareeba Shire Council for achieving 72.3 per cent. “This award recognises and rewards council for excelling in the area of work, health and safety in order to promote and sustain good safe practices.”

INTERNATIONAL Women’s Day Celebrating & Uniting Women PUTTING THE PUZZLE TOGETHER:

Community Mental Health InforMatIon nIgHt

Lenore Wyatt

The celebration of women in our society starts in our own communities. On International Women’s Day I would like to honour my Mum, Carol Gear, as an example of a woman of exceptional character and community spirit. Having a healthy respect for her opinion has always led me to ask advice from my Mum, which has molded me into the confident, capable women I am today. Watching Mum, with her fabulous conversational skills, her respect for others and her giving ways, is a great example to follow. I am sharing this quote with you today as I feel it sums up my mother and many other women in my life, “Be the change you want to see in this world”.

In celebrating International Women’s Day, we celebrate how far we have come. From humble beginnings and sheer hard work, not only have I managed the everyday duties of a wife, mother, grandmother and participate in the workforce, but more recently purchasing and managing the family business (Mareeba News). By far one of my biggest achievements was being elected councillor to the Mareeba Shire Council. Being part of a progressive council who have delivered balanced budgets in our first two years, with limited general rates increases. I hope that after March 19, I will be part of the Mareeba Shire First Team elected to continue the good work going forward to ensure a strong and vibrant Mareeba Shire and it’s people. ADVERTISEMENT

Mareeba Chamber of Commerce

Floral Magic: HELEN TOMS

The Mareeba Chamber of Commerce recognizes and encourages International Women’s Day as a way to celebrate and promote the social, economic, cultural and political achievements of women. The Mareeba Chamber of Commerce Executive Committee comprises of four female representatives (pictured) and promotes the increase of women in higher roles in our region, as a way to increase gender equality. Research studies confirm a direct correlation between the gender gap in economic opportunities and economic growth. By contrast, the smaller the nation’s gender gap, the higher its economic productivity. Many successful business women have originated in our region and we hope to see many more in the future.

Meet Helen Toms – owner/operator of Floral Magic in Mareeba. Helen and her family moved to Mareeba in 2000; and Helen says it was the best move they ever made. After a 30 year break, Helen decided to return to Floristry and in 2012 purchased Floral Magic. After a shopfront move to Hort Street, Helen has never looked back. With a love for floral design, Helen and her team specialise in fresh, artificial and dried arrangements for all occasions and events. Floral Magic also offer wedding design and a full decorating service, plus they travel to remote areas to do weddings and functions. Flowers are Helen’s passion – “I enjoy making people happy”. Helen credits her success to great woman who have been an integral part of her life. “I have been lucky enough to have been surrounded by some amazing woman – I would not have succeeded without their support. Out of work life Helen is a mother and grandmother and is lucky enough to have most of her family live in and around Mareeba.

Enter digits from 1 to 9 into the blank spaces. Every row must contain one of each digit. So must every column, as must every 3x3 square.

Ingredients

2 cups mozzarella cheese 1/2 cup parmesan cheese 1 cup frozen chopped spinach 350g artichoke hearts, roughly chopped

1. Preheat the oven to 180°C. Spray a medium-size baking dish with non-stick cooking spray and set aside. 2. Sauté the artichoke hearts and spinach over medium heat until all the liquid has evaporated. 3. Add the grated mozzarella, grated parmesan, cream cheese, sour cream, garlic, salt, and pepper to the bowl of a food processor and blend until thoroughly combined. 4. Add the artichoke hearts and spinach and blend until they are evenly combined. 5. Pour into you’re prepared baking dish, cover and bake for 20 minutes. 6. Uncover and bake for an additional 20 to 25 minutes or until the top is lightly browned. 7. Serve with pita chips, tortilla chips, toasted bread or vegetables for dipping.

When size does matter

If you have been looking at the other modern homes on the market, you are probably saying to yourself why are all these rooms so small? Well, take a look at this. With approximately 270m2 under roof, and all of it liveable, you certainly won’t run out of space here. There are multiple living options, four bedrooms and two bathrooms. From the towering ceilings in the lounge and main dining room, to the oversized rear patio, all of it is big. Prestigiously positioned on the high side of Jacinta Crescent, the home is set slightly further back from the street than all of the neighbours, so you will enjoy more privacy to your living areas, in particular the super spacious outdoor living area at the rear of the home. There are so many features to mention, the only way to fully appreciate the size and space in this home is to book yourself an inspection. Some of them are: • Approximately 270m2 under roof and all living area • Prestigious positioning on the high side of Jacinta Crescent • Towering ceilings in the lounge and main dining room • Large windows and doors, all fully security screened

• Large openings allow natural light and ventilation • Huge bedrooms, all with built-ins and ceiling fans • Master has en-suite, WIR and air-conditioning • Very private and spacious outdoor living area • Access to patio from lounge, dining and master bedroom • Extra-large guest room, or secondary living area • 5m x 6m Colorbond shed plus 6m carport, plus 3mx3m garden shed • Oversize 1,195m2 allotment with underground irrigation to all lawns Selling below replacement value, don’t miss this opportunity, give exclusive agent Remo Esposito a call at the Central Realty office today. In Memoriam

In Memoriam

AAron Zenel

06/11/2010 - 09/03/2013 Days come and go, Some days seen fast and some days seem slow. Memories of you make me laugh some days, and cry other days. But on each and every day I miss you, I will love you always.

GOD’S GARDEN God looked around his garden and found an empty place, He then looked down upon the earth and saw your tired face. He put his arms around you and lifted you to rest, God’s garden must be beautiful, He always takes the best. He knew that you were in pain, He knew that you would never get well on earth again, He saw the road as getting rough and the hills were getting hard to climb, So he closed your weary eyelids, and whispered “Peace be thine”. It broke our hearts to lose you but you didn’t go alone, for part of us went with you the day God called you home.

In loving memory of our treasured Son, Brother and Grandson

AARON ZENEL 13.10.82 – 05.03.07 We will always remember, The adventurous life you lived. And keep alive those memories, Through everything you did. Yes, memories have a magic way, Of keeping loved ones near. Ever close in mind and heart, Are the ones we hold most dear. So as we gather and recall, Special times that we went through. With all the memories that warm our hearts, We honour the memory of you.

Forever loved, forever missed, forever in our hearts, Dad, Mum, Damon and Grandmum Rose.

Nanna Hogan.

We wanted so much to keep you, But God willed it not to be. Now you are in God’s keeping, You suffer no more pain. So dear God take care of him, Until we meet again.

Mareeba’s finest talent takes on leadership role By Justin Fris

FORMER Mareeba United Football Club striker Jamie Carroll is currently revelling in a purple patch of form for the FNQ Heat. Having worked his socks off during the off-season, Carroll was recently informed he would lead the Heat this season. “It was a real honour and a privilege to be given captaincy,” he said. “I certainly didn’t expect it. Tim let me know about a month or so ago during pre season in Townsville. “I haven’t looked back since. I’ve just been enjoying the role and looking after the players around me.” Carroll found the net in every pre season outing; and only took five minutes to open his account during the Heat’s 3-1 opening round win over Olympic FC. He has relished working under new Head Coach Tim Campbell and Craig Midgley (FNQ Heat Technical Director) and said that the competitive pre season was an enjoyable experience. “They are a pretty good combination,” he said. “Tim’s more of a defensive player and ‘Midge’ is more of a striker – so you’ve got the best of both worlds within their coaching styles.” Midgley represented the likes of Bradford City (currently in Football League 1) and Hartlepool United (English League 2) during his playing days and has proved Carroll with helpful feedback in both training and on matchday. “His training sessions reflect the player he was growing up,” Carroll said. “His drills and training sessions – they are good, tight knit situations which are game based.” A talented striker who gives defenders nightmares,

the man they dub ‘JC’ has a pure love for football. Carroll started playing football at MUFC from the age of five and has risen to become one of the premier marksmen in the Queensland National Premier League. “I’ve always played in the midfield or in the attacking third,” he said. “It didn’t matter it was, but it was always up top.” Along with being able to score on a regular basis, strikers need to possess a number of other important qualities. They need to be confident in their ability, patient if they have missed a few chances and ensure they dominate in the box. Carroll possesses one of the most lethal shots in the NPL however is more focused on the delivery of a shot than its power. “For me, it’s all about hitting the sweet spot,” he said. “I don’t necessarily line up with a lot of force. If you hit the sweet spot, it tends to go alright. He added: “We’ve (forwards) got good link up from ‘Gozza’ (Jamie Gosling) Bronson (Bronson Koppen) myself and Kieran (Kieran Sanders). We’ve got a good understanding of how each other play and we speak about it before each game.” Campbell said that Carroll had been really disciplined on the training ground over the pre season and said that his striker had been performing well. “He certainly knows where the goal is,” he said. “He’s got a very accurate shot and is one of our more experienced players in the squad.” Given the positive culture off the pitch, it is little surprise the Heat are winning matches and enjoying their football. “The more time we spend time together, the more we learn about each other,” Carroll said.

Heat run riot against Sunshine Coast By Justin Fris

THE FNQ Heat made further positive inroads into their 2016 National Premier League –Qld campaign, thrashing Sunshine Coast 4-0 at Barlow Park last Saturday night. With consecutive wins under their belt, Tim Campbell’s men have set a fantastic foundation for future success this season. Mareeba maestro Jamie Carroll again managed to find the net early on – and in the process, will be giving several rival goalkeepers many a sleepless night. But it was a goalkeeper at the other end – the Heat’s own Kevin Ward – who pulled off a fantastic early save that lifted his teammates. Ward has started both games for the Heat in 2016 and has performed superbly so far. His defence appear to be in good hands. After Carroll’s early bullet-like finish, Jamie Gosling, Kieran Sanders and Josh Pin would find them-

THE Red Devils have remained perfect in 2016, after a comfortable 57-43 victory over the Comets in last Thursday evening’s Mareeba Basketball League contest. It was another solid team effort by the reigning champs, who show no signs of slowing down towards another premiership push. Family commitments saw midcourt maestro Clinton Cameron enter the game after half time, but his teammates did plenty of early groundwork. Devils players played a fairly conservative type of offense, with their speedy youngsters taking advantage of quality ball use. The Comets – who have been hampered by a lack of attacking prowess – trailed by double digits by the end of the first quarter. Experience and long periods of possession were of no issue for the Comets; they simply squandered both. Despite their shortcomings in the first half, the Comets still gave themselves plenty of opportunities to get back into the game. With copious chances at their mercy, the Comets would go a paltry 6/20 from the field. Over the side, the Devils went 3/4 from the three point line and effectively

selves on the scoresheet. Post match, Campbell said he was pleased with his side’s application and how they were able to create quality chances. “We played really well and were able to create some really good chances early on,” he said. “Kev then made a really good save in the 15th minute and to be fair, we could have gone 1-0 down. “Sunshine Coast played a physical game with many long balls, which put us under some pressure at times. “But we pushed and pushed and it eventually came. I genuinely feel there are lots of goals in this team.” Campbell also praised the efforts of Cameron Nucifora in central midfield, who provided several quality runs and finishes for his side. The Heat will travel to Ipswich this Saturday night, where they will take on the Western Pride and will hope to return home to the Far North with another three points.

killed the contest. Or so the crowd thought. Some of the Comets’ younger brigade began to turn on the style, with slick and succinct offensive breaks. However in a recurring theme for their evening, offensive raids counted for little. Their final quarter effort of 2/13 from the field resulted in a 8/33 output for the half. The Devils controlled the final exchanges between the two sides and placed further doubt into the minds of prospective challengers. In other matches, the Young G’s scraped through for a consecutive wins, downing MBA Express 44-41, while the poor ‘ole Barras again fell the on the wrong side of a scoreline – with the Ciggy Butts running out 59-46 winners. This week’s fixtures are as follows: Red Devils v MBA Express (7.10pm), Comets v Barras (8.10pm) and Young G’s v Stingrays (9.10pm). Matches are held each Thursday evening at the Mareeba PCYC Sports Hall on Walsh Street in Mareeba. Everyone is welcome to attend.

Errors cost Gladiators dearly in trial match By Justin Fris

THE Mareeba Gladiators were left to rue a hatful of opportunities, after falling 26-18 to the Mossman/Port Douglas Sharks in their CDRL pre season trial last Saturday evening at Davies Park. Although the home side did exhibit solid segments of play throughout the evening, their ball security and handling of the football was not up to competitive standard at times. After having a forgettable season in 2015, the Sharks appeared keen to turn their fortunes around from the opening whistle. Sporting a very large forward pack, the visitors made it clear from the outset that no tackle or hit would go unfelt. Both sides traded possession during the opening stanza, which was unfortunate for the hosts as they began the match brightly. After soaking up the initial pressure, the Sharks managed to take advantage of the home side’s frustration and opened their account at the 10 minute mark. Putting their cards on the table, the visitors showed no fear in throwing the ball around near the Gladiator line. Orchestrated masterfully by halfback Robbie Amber, a ‘globetrotter’ pass was whisked out to Khaele Bowen on the far wing, who touched down at the Mareeba Swimming Pool end. The Gladiators would dig themselves into a further hole on the ensuing kickoff, where the ball would bounce out of play, without having touched a Sharks player. This would happen twice in the half – both times gifting the Sharks excellent field possession and aiding their scoring sets. Speedster Shawn Bowen would be the beneficiary from the following set and would go on to score a hat trick of tries. Bowen would be set up by winger Peter Tuccandidee. After queuing patiently with three other teammates on the left hand side (clubhouse wing), he delicately plucked the football out of the air and dove into the corner. Trailing 10-0 after 20 minutes, the Gladiators needed a spark. They got one instantaneously through their coach, Josh Stowers. A quality leader in the middle of the field, Stowers instructions and support resulted in him crossing for the

home side’s first try of the night. The Sharks would march their way down the field minutes later and Bowen would again provide a classy finish for his teammates. After again being provided with a quality ball, Bowen deftly evaded three defenders and casually touched the ball down. The evasion of the defence was impressive enough – but the sheer strength he dished out when finally pressured was staggering. Impressive local youngster Jack Hogan would keep the Gladiators within reach going into the second half, capitalising on some excellent work by his forwards. Play would take on a scrappy form over the next 10 minutes, before the Sharks put their foot down and seemingly were out of sight. David Oui and Bowen would score for the visitors, who’s fleet of foot on the flanks gave the Gladiators defence plenty of headaches. But, this Gladiators outfit has shown plenty of progress under Stowers – and their willingness for a contest came fully into view. Coupled by their ambition, was an unflattering nature of ill discipline which had crept into the Sharks’ play. Tackles were suddenly missing, teammates were shaking their heads and silly penalties began to pile up. Patience finally paid off for the home side on 70 minutes, when Azariah Gutchen was fed a ball through a tight gap and motored in from 35 metres out. Additional opportunities would come and go for the home side in the next five minutes, however handling errors put an end to each raid. Clint Posselt’s strength would eventually win out for the hosts, who pulled within a converted try with three minutes left. However with time on their side and a slender lead in their keeping, the Sharks managed to control the tempo and close out the contest. Both sides would have taken plenty out of the game and supporters from each team would have left Davies Park optimistic about how certain elements of the match played out. The Gladiators will travel to Roosters Stadium this Saturday evening, where they will play their bitter rival Atherton.

Waterlogged pitch postpones FFA Cup tie MAREEBA United Football Club’s FFA Cup tie against the Leichhardt Lions was postponed last Saturday evening, as the pitch was deemed unplayable. MUFC officials were kept up to date throughout the day by the Lions, who phoned mid afternoon to inform them that the game had been called off. The winner of the tie will advance to the next round of competition, where they will compete against another Premier League club for the right to face the NPL-based FNQ Heat. MUFC coach Alex Srhoj said preparations for the

www.theexpressnewspaper.com.au

match would remain the same, naming an unchanged lineup. “The match will be held either Friday or Saturday evening at Leichhardt,” he said. “In a way it’s ideal, as it won’t be clashing with a Heat home game. “We knew it was going to be touch and go throughout the week, as Leichhardt traditionally is a bit of a soggy pitch after heavy rain. “The youth in our side, they deserve their opportunity to play. Loyalty is a very big for me and I’m confident they will give it their best.”

Excitement building for Cardiac Challenge

THE annually anticipated ‘Cardiac Challenge’ is primed for further success, as event organisers prepare to celebrate its 10th anniversary. Facilitated by the Far North Queensland Hospital Foundation, the event raises much needed funds for cardiac-related services in the region. Over 1400 riders have participated in the event since its inception, with $2.5 million put toward greatly appreciated resources. FNQHF marketing manager Glenys Duncombe said the commitment from the riders was a true testament of their character. “For us, having these people do the ride every single year is a tribute to their commitment to the cause – many of them are motivated by personal or family sto-

ries of heart conditions,” Ms Duncombe said. “And as this is our 10th year, there's a great buzz about the event and we're expecting it to be one of our biggest and best,” she said. “We have some individuals and teams who are highly motivated and committed to raising $10,000 each, so we're really excited about what can be achieved.” Commencing on September 17, riders leave Cairns and cycle up the Kuranda Range through to Mareeba. After a brief pause, they continue on through to Mt Carbine, finishing up in Cooktown at the end of the three day event.
