Nearly 40 groups received sponsorship support last year with More than $45,000 distributed and the Community Bank is anticipating another strong response this year.

MAKING HER MARK: Local Albina Niceforo’s performance at the Forte International Music Competition in New York City was an impressive one, having received a Gold Award for securing an impressive overall score of 94.

Albina shines in the Big Apple ALBINA Niceforo and her mother Carmelina recently returned home to Australia after spending time in New York City for the Forte International Music Competition.

When The Express last spoke with Albina and Mrs Niceforo, they were packing their belongings in preparation for a long-haul flight to the home of Broadway.

The extensive travel time and jetlag was all worth it as Albina

performed exceptionally well, taking home a Gold Award.

Albina achieved the feat by accumulating an overall score of 94 points, and did so against an elite collection of talent.

“There were over 200 nominations, so to be in the finals (top 20) is amazing,” Albina said.

“I was certainly surprised to have received a Gold Award as you have to receive a very high score from the four-strong judg-

ing panel.”

Albina said having the opportunity to visit New York City was a real eye-opener.

“I would love to perform there again,” she said.

“I want to perform as much as I can, whether that is in a competition or at a concert – the more I perform the more I grow as an artist.”

Mrs Niceforo noted how thrilled she was with Albina’s

achievement.

“I was very proud of Albina on how she took the competition all in her stride - she did not show any sign of nerves,” she said.

“Albina was so comfortable with all competitors and the language barrier was non-existent as all competitors were so friendly towards each other.

“It was a well run competition with wonderful feedback offered to the finalists.”

The questions and comments were overwhelmingly in relation to Ms Lui’s office closure, which prompted healthy yet at times heated discussion.

Ms Lui said the purpose of her speaking at the lunch was mostly to clear the air about the office relocation.

“Today was a great opportunity for community members to ask me questions about the office move face to face, and I appreciate what everyone had to say,” she said.

“On top of that, obviously the office move has been a hot topic here in Mareeba recently, so that was always going to come up.

“As an organisation, we’re of the strong view that the office should remain in Mareeba, and hopefully some of the valid points raised from the businesspeople here today can make Ms Lui reconsider her decision.”

Mr Moro said although the Mareeba Chamber of Commerce is opposed to her office relocation, Ms Lui deserves to be commended for her work as the Member for Cook.

“Cynthia has been willing to engage with the Chamber and the business community during her time as the Member which has been extremely beneficial to the community,” he said.

“What first comes to my mind is her work in helping secure funding for the Mossman Mill; even though that is in the Douglas Shire it is an important outcome for a lot of sugar growers on the Tablelands, so she’s worthy of recognition for that.”

With community members passionately voicing their opposition to the office closure in Mareeba, it appears it will remain a point of contention for a long period of time.

Hospital welcomes new nurses THERE’S a lot to be admired about the wonderful work nurses do in our nation’s healthcare industry, and Mareeba is one such community that has a deep appreciation of the lengths they go to in ensuring they provide the very best care.

Patients across Far North Queensland will reap the benefits of a new crop of enthusiastic registered nurses as The Cairns and Hinterland Hospital Service welcomed 49 new nursing graduates and four new midwifery graduates last week – three of whom will be starting their careers at the Mareeba Hospital.

The three fresh faces that have been added to the Mareeba Hospital’s registered nurses team are Christina Cross, Elsa Price and Alicia Leitner.

All three newly appointed nurses expressed their excitement about beginning their role at the Mareeba Hospital.

“I was a medical receptionist prior to this, and I wanted a career that is more involved with people one on one, and I felt being a nurse was the perfect chance to do so,” Ms Price said.

“Added to that, nursing is a really flexible career that presents plenty of opportunities both professionally and in terms of travel, so that was another factor that drew me to the role.”

The professional flexibility that Ms Price lauded was echoed by that of Ms Cross.

The Mareeba Hospital welcomed three new nurses this week, all three of whom are eager to make their mark on the profession.

“Like Elsa said, the diverse nature of the career is what I’m really excited about,” she said.

“Ever since I started nursing, whether it was when I was studying, on placement or now at the Mareeba Hospital, I have loved every minute of it and it has been

more than I could have ever expected.”

“It’s also fantastic to be back in a small, rural town – I’m from a small community in CentralWest Queensland so I can’t wait to live and work in a remote part of Queensland again.”

Mrs Leitner’s journey to becoming a nurse was a little different; having already had the chance to get a glimpse of what is required in the profession during her six years working at the Mareeba Garden Settlement.

“I gained my aged care quali-

fications and decided I wanted to progress into becoming a nurse,” she said.

“My grandparents were both nurses and that was a big point of inspiration for me, so I’m looking forward to starting and bringing some fresh ideas to the job.”

“Mareeba is a wonderful community and I’m thrilled to be given the chance to further my career here.” With the passion and commitment to the nursing profession all three appear to have, local patients appear to be in more than capable hands.

THE National Rugby League has made a concerted effort in recent years to raise much-needed awareness around mental health through their NRL State of Mind program.

The program, which aims to increase mental health literacy, reduce stigma and encourage positive conversation and connections, was delivered at Mount St Bernard College in Herberton as part of the NRL Road to Regions tour held on the Tablelands last week.

Former NRL player and current Project Officer for the NRL David Shillington presented the program, and noted the important role initiatives such as the NRL State of Mind program play in today’s society.

“This is a government funded program which is delivered in conjunction with our expert partners Headspace, Lifeline, Kids Helpline and the Black Dog In-

stitute,” he said.

“It’s all about increasing everyone’s knowledge about mental health and encouraging helpseeking behaviours.

“What we find, particularly in men, is that they like to bottle things up and battle their problems on their own; however we want to change that so people feel they can speak up when they’re struggling.”

Being a former professional rugby league player, Mr Shillington has seen first-hand the trials and tribulations that come with being in the public spotlight.

“The State of Mind program has become a strong point of emphasis for the NRL as so many players throughout the league struggle with their own mental health issues,” he said.

“Professional rugby league players are no different; they are human beings as well.

“When you add a whole heap of money, fame and public scrutiny, sometimes players can be more subjected to problems surrounding mental health.

“And because the NRL has seen players throughout the league have their own battles, we want to use our platform to further deliver the message to the wider community that it’s okay to not be okay.”

Mr Shillington said the program is being delivered to 200 junior rugby league clubs in Queensland alone.

The NRL State of Mind program began in Queensland and is now being delivered in the Northern Territory, New South Wales and Western Australia thanks to their State Governments, which gives further indication of the serious approach we as a country are taking to tackling mental health.

THE VIEW: Families will have the opportunity to see the Tinaroo Dam spillway in all its glory after SunWater announced the dam walkway is now open to the public.

Chance to catch glimpse of spillway atop Tinaroo Dam

THERE has been considerable excitement across the Tablelands in the last week after SunWater announced the walkway on the Tinaroo Dam wall is now open to the public.

The left bank crest (walkway) was originally closed in April, 2009, for dam improvement work to be undertaken; however when the work was completed in 2011, the crest remained closed as a safety precaution.

A SunWater spokeperson said they were delighted to re-open the left bank crest at Tinaroo Falls Dam for public access.

“Since re-opening on Tuesday, February 5, we have received positive feedback from the community who have visited, or are excited to visit the crest,” the spokesperson said.

“The crest is now open permanently, seven days a week between 7.30am and 3.00pm.

“These hours have been set to ensure the safety of all visitors, noting that lighting on the dam wall is not suitable for evening viewing and our on-site supervisor needs to be present whilst the area is open to the public.”

The spokesperson said fol-

lowing engagement with the community, SunWater carried out safety improvements including the installation of additional guard rails, removable bollards and safety signage.

“We understand the importance of Tinaroo Falls Dam for local recreation and tourism, and as these improvements were recently completed, it allowed us to open the crest in time for people to see the dam spilling for the first time since 2012,” they said.

With plenty of families expected to be visiting the dam to catch a glimpse of the overflow-

ing spillway, the spokesperson outlined some of the dangers that exist with the crest.

“For everyone visiting the dam please stay safe, don’t take risks and ensure you note all safety signage,” they said.

“With so much rain over the past week, please take extra care to note slippery surfaces and avoid trip hazards.

“It’s also important to make sure children are supervised at all times and that you don’t climb the fences, gates or barriers.”

Katter calls for Johnstone Diversion FEDERAL Member for Kennedy Bob Katter was on the Tablelands last week to meet with farmers to discuss the North Johnstone Transfer Project (North Johnstone Diversion).

The proposed scheme is designed to transfer water from the North Johnstone River near Malanda to the Barron River, and will include a pipeline from Malanda to Kenny Creek, a tributary of the Barron River.

That will in turn improve water security for irrigators relying

on storage capacity in Tinaroo Dam. Mr Katter said the discussion with the farming group was to encourage them to apply for funding to ensure the NJTP goes ahead.

“This is something that needs to happen in Far North Queensland,” Mr Katter said.

“The Government has been telling the public that there will be dams built in Far North Queensland for the past 30 years, but too often nothing has been done.”

Mr Katter said the processes that are needed to go through to secure funding are mostly to blame.

“In this case, the Greens or the Government aren’t the enemy, it’s the process,” he said.

“With business plans, Environmental Impact Statements and changing Governments, it feels like we have to start the slate clean every time we begin to gain momentum.”

Mr Katter said if the NJTP’s application was successful, he

would like to see two weirs as opposed to one.

“There are so many farmers short of water, particularly on the Atherton Tablelands,” he said.

“Because of that, two weirs would be of significant help and would give underground water users a much-needed reprieve.”

“I’ll continue to endeavour to ensure this proposal gets the necessary attention from the Government, and hopefully we’ll have an approved dam in this region in the near future.”

Cropping solutions for Northern Australia Recently Daniel Rodriguez and Joe Eyre from the University of Queensland, Gatton Campus, visited Georgetown with the purpose of developing the cropping industry in Northern Australia.

Northern Gulf agricultural Landcare officer, Laura Miller took the professors out to two stations in the shire where UQ and Northern Gulf hope to trial dry land Sorghum crops.

Daniel and Joe believe that Sorghum is a great crop for the

north as it is sustainable, profitable and a low-risk option for landholders wanting to diversify themselves. Cropping in the region will increase full-time employment and bring business into the local communities.

“There is interest from the Geogetown primary school who are keen to support the trial and wants to plant some sorghum at the school to teach the kids about cropping,” said Northern Gulf's RLF Officer, Laura Miller.

WHAT does the Great Australian Dream mean to you?

Casting agency, Catapult Casting, are now calling for participants in Mareeba to find out just that.

The Victorian based agency will be in Mareeba later this month conducting a research project that requires filmed interviews with real people to find what the Great Australian Dream means to them.

This project is being directed by Jessica Barclay Lawton and the perspectives gained from the research will be used to inspire and inform future film projects. The interviews are not planned for public release.

They are looking to meet real people from different parts of the country, and from all walks of life and would love to hear from men and women of all ages, including – people born in Australia, immigrants and first nations people.

The interviews will be a

candid talk to find out participants perspectives and experiences, with the big question being – “What does the Great Australian Dream mean to you?.

“We want to hear your thoughts about prosperity and opportunity. About what changes and what stays the same. And about what the dream is, and if it's achievable.”

Preliminary interviews will be short and will take place on camera in Mareeba from February 17 to 19. Follow up interviews will be paid and take place in March to June this year. If you live remotely they can also arrange an interview over Skype.

Putting the freeze on ice

The Australian Anti Ice Campaign (AAIC), in partnership with local business, Mareeba Rotary and other community organisations has launched a program in Far North Queensland to educate and raise awareness of the incredible dangers of using Ice, with particular focus on high school students throughout FNQ. AAIC’s core message – not even once. .

AAIC was birthed out of Founder and CEO Andre’s Simmons own experience having been entrapped in and finding recovery from Ice addiction. At the age of 40, Andre’a, a mother of two teenage daughters and a successful businesswoman, was going through a marriage separation and was offered an Ice pipe on the basis the “It will just help you relax ”.

Without even knowing it was Ice Andre’a made the near fatal decision to have that first puff, a decision that saw her quickly spiral into a 2 year, $500 a day Ice habit that nearly took her life.

“Ice addiction is a living hell, a scary place that very few people ever fully escape from. Myself and all our Workshop Presenters are among the lucky ones who have escaped and we are committed to using our experiences to warn others, particularly our youth, so that they can make better choices if and when this insidiously addictive and destructive drug is offered to them”, Ms. Simmons said.

Andrew and Graeme Ford from Hansen Ford and Mareeba Toyota have committed to a five year Major Sponsorship to kick

off the AAIC Program in Mareeba and the Tablelands region. Andrew Ford said that the long term future of the town and the region was the motivation behind the sponsorship.

information in relation to the highly toxic ingredients used in making Ice, the short and long term physical and mental health effects of Ice use as well as presenting students with tools and strategies if, most likely when, Ice is ever offered to them or if a friend is using or considering using Ice. The key to the AAIC Workshop is the recruiting and training of Workshop Presenters who, like Andre’a Simmons, have been through the hell of Ice addiction and have been “clean” for at least one year. Workshop presenters weave their own heartfelt stories of addiction into an interactive PowerPoint and Video based workshop.

Mareeba High Deputy Principal Lesa Pershouse believes that the powerful workshop presentation could have a lasting, even lifelong positive impact on kid’s attitudes to taking Ice. “Hearing first hand from someone who has been in that situation is very different from just a normal classroom setting” she said.

“It will make a difference.

Maybe not tomorrow and maybe not next week. But definitely in the lives of these young people it’s going to be a positive thing”.

In Phase 2 Mareeba High School Students will participate in a “refresher” AAIC Presentation this year as well as competing in a “Not Even Once” art competition run through the schools. This competition will give students the opportunity to compete and win prizes at a local, regional, state

Photos of all submitted art pieces, together with the student’s 100-150 word artist statement will be displayed on the AAIC Website and Social Media pages. Selected entrant’s art pieces will be featured in this newspaper over the course of the year and in a public display at the Mareeba Art Gallery throughout October this year.

Mareeba Rotary Club will partner with AAIC to arrange the public display and judging of entrant’s art pieces and to stage an annual Walk against Ice and Youth Engagement event to raise awareness and funds for the ongo-

ing campaign.

Again Ms. Simmons expressed her extreme gratitude for the assistance of the Mareeba Rotary Club.

“This is a community problem that requires a community response. For us partnerships with respected and trusted organisations that care about their community like Rotary is critical. The support we have received in Mareeba, including from the Mareeba High School and from Carl at The Express has been amazing.” she said.

Servicemen and branch members honoured Servicemen and family members of soldiers who passed descended upon the Rocky Creek Nasho Shelter on Sunday to commemorate National Service Day. The ceremony recognised the servicemen from the Tablelands who served in Australia’s National Service’s 1951-59 scheme, along with the stalwart supporters of the National Servicemen’s Association of Australia Tableland Branch.

As each servicemen and long-standing member was individually acknowledged for their commitment to the country and to the branch, loved ones were called up to speak in honour of their passed family member.

They then paid their respects by laying a poppy on the dedicated memorial plaque.

dent John Hardy said he was extremely happy with the turn-out.

“It’s great to see so many people despite the recent weather,” he said.

“National Service Day and the memorial plaques unveiled are so important to many people here, and it is crucial we continue to recognise the incredible legacy those honoured today left.”

Mr Hardy said it was particularly important for soldiers who served in the Australia’s National Service’s 1951-1959 scheme to receive their due recognition because of the vitriol they encountered upon returning to Australia.

“National servicemen of that scheme, particularly Vietnam veterans, were scorned when they came home,” he said.

“Their period of service is quite often overlooked and

that’s something we are seeking to change.

“With that being said, it is pleasing to see servicemen awarded an Anniversary of National Service 1951-1972 Medal as recognition for their service.

“We’re one of only a few countries in the world that issue you a medal in recognition of service.”

Mr Hardy said he would like to see more 1965-1972 servicemen get involved with the branch.

“Our 1951-1959 Nashos are ageing quite rapidly, so we’re relying on some of those younger servicemen to take the torch and carry the association into the future,” he said.

Mareeba businesswoman helping Nepalese in need

NEPAL is a country filled with immense natural beauty, wonderful people and a particularly unique culture, however unfortunately it is also a nation which battles extreme poverty.

One such organisation that has been helping combat Nepal’s poverty rate and absence of opportunity is Queensland charity Nepali Family Incorporated.

Nepali Family Incorporated founders, Dr Digby and Anne Hoyal lived and worked in Western Nepal for five years as a doctor-nurse team from 1999-2004, and it was there the inspiration for the charity was born. They now spend about three months a year in that country where a group of dedicated local people support the educational and charitable work.

The charity organisation, which has been operating since 2002, has directly assisted more than 200 children and their families through providing poor, blind, disabled, low caste, and other disadvantaged children across the Nepalese community access to education, training and purpose-built group homes.

As stated by UNESCO, education is the way out of poverty for those discriminated against.

Past students return to offer help to the organisation and form a locally based group to ensure community contact is seen as relevant and local.

Mrs De Lai will be joining Dr and Mrs Hoyal on their visit to Nepal next month, and it is an experience she is eagerly looking forward to.

“I jumped at the opportunity to visit Nepal and help wherever I can,” Mrs De Lai said.

“I retire in a couple of months and I’ve started to slow down with work, so this was the perfect chance to provide the lessfortunate with important lifeskills so that they can become independent.”

Mrs De Lai said falling ill last year provided her with a new perspective on life and gave her further inspiration to take part in the upcoming trip.

“It made me realise how short life really is,” she said.

“I’ve been blessed enough to never have to worry about food and shelter, so if I can do even one small thing to improve their quality of life, the trip will have been a resounding success.”

The class of 2019’s student leaders were recognised last Thursday at the Atherton State High held their annual Welcome Ceremony.

ATHERTON State High School recognised their senior leaders last Thursday as they held their annual Welcome Ceremony.

The ceremony saw the class of 2019’s school captains, vicecaptains, student council and indigenous ambassador recognised in an official capacity as

the school year is now in full swing.

Atherton State High school captains Tahlia King and Riley Vallance noted their excitement about being selected in the roles.

“It means a lot to be a part of the leadership program at Atherton High,” Riley said.

“It is quite daunting being my last year, however I’m confident I’ll be able to balance my study commitments and the responsibilities of being a school captain because we’re well catered for here at the school.”

“I was in much smaller leadership positions in year 8 and 9, however they allowed me to get exposure and gain some of the necessary skills it takes to be a successful leader,” she said.

“Last year’s school captain Hayley Fullgrabe was a big inspiration for me, I knew her personally and she helped pave the

way in creating a change in the way we view leadership. It’s a far more desired position to be in now because of her work in 2018,” she said.

Fellow vice-captain Jordan said his older brother being school captain at Atherton High coupled with him wanting to see change were big factors in his decision to be a part of the 2019 leadership group.

“Unlike a lot of the other members of the leadership group, I initially didn’t want to be a leader,” he said.

“It wasn’t until I saw my brother in the position that it influenced me. And now that I’m in the role I want ensure I don’t sit on the sidelines and ease my way through the year, I want to make a change where I can.”

Another leadership position which can at times be overlooked for its integral work is the President of the student council.

Their work in organising school activities, community service efforts and social events are crucial in developing a healthy culture at the school.

The class of 2019’s student council President is Connor Le’Gear.

“I want our student council to be a platform for students to have their say within the school and community,” Connor said.

“My aim is to be extremely present in this role so that we are heard as a student council and can take action at the school.”

Leading the way in 2019

LEADERS: Mareeba State High School seniors were presented with their senior badges last Tuesday night as the school held their Senior Induction Ceremony. The night also saw the 2019 senior leaders officially announced.

DOZENS converged on the Mareeba International Club last Tuesday night for Mareeba State High School’s Senior Leaders Induction Ceremony.

The purpose of the ceremony was to give the class of 2019 their senior badges, as well as officially announce this year’s school leaders.

MSHS Principal Scott Whybird said it is a more than capable group of students.

“This is a great group of leaders and a wonderful cohort,” he said.

“They’re a smaller cohort but I think that will encourage them to come together more – every student I’ve spoken to have a real sense of genuineness about them which is fantastic to see.

“They never spoke about themselves; it was always about the school, their cohort and the part they want to play in the wider community.

“We’ve only been back for a couple of weeks but everyone is enthusiastic about the

year ahead so I’m confident 2019 will be a great one.”

The ceremony’s student leader announcements culminated in naming the school captains for the class of 2019, of which are Ryan Paton and Alexis Ford.

They both noted that the responsibility of being school captain is something they are looking forward to.

“It’s a great chance to not only represent MSHS, but to also help further strengthen the link between the school and the community,” Ryan said.

“This school does a wonderful job at providing opportunities for its students, whether it’s from an academic, sporting or creative arts standpoint; and the success this school breeds is a result of that exposure to opportunity.”

Alexis expressed similar excitement to Ryan when asked what it meant to be named school captain; all while noting the exceptional example that has been set by

last year’s school captains Joshua Theakston and Giulia Rogato.

“Last year’s captains were so involved in community activities and Ryan and I are looking forward to continuing that on,” she said.

“The student council this year is a really good group of students, and I can’t wait to work closely with them throughout the year to ensure a successful school year.”

Both Ryan and Alexis said they would like to thank their family as well as the staff at Mareeba State High School for their continued support.

Helping students achieve success

FURTHER EDUCATION: 2018 graduates of Mareeba High returned to the school last week for the annual undergraduate parade.

Tertiary education students recognised

IT is a point of emphasis at Mareeba State High School to celebrate those who succeed, and they did just that last Tuesday as they held their annual undergraduate parade.

The assembly recognised those students in the class of 2018 who received offers to undertake tertiary education this year.

The 2018 grade 12 cohort is a gifted one, so much so they garnered impressive results to the tune of 52% of OP eligible students receiving OP’s between 1-10, and 20% receiving an OP score of five or better.

Former Mareeba State High School Principal and current Mareeba Shire Councillor Angela Toppin was invited to speak at the parade, and was full of praise when describing the academic culture that exists at the school.

“I was a past principal there and I’m always delighted to be

given the opportunity to speak at their undergraduate assembly,” she said.

“Ever since I’ve been involved with Mareeba State High, striving for academic excellence has always been a tradition at the school.”

Cr Toppin said she is extremely proud to see young people prospering at a small, rural school.

“For students to be having experiences similar to those that are readily available in city schools is crucial, and I think the multitude of opportunities Mareeba State High provide is why they have such success,” she said.

“I believe a student should be developed as an all-rounder, which includes experiencing cultural pursuits, community service initiatives and sporting opportunities on top of their academic commitments.

“That allows young people to be well prepared as citizens of the future.”

Cr Toppin also noted that she is pleased to see students attending universities more locally.

“The expense of undertaking tertiary education further south can be quite prohibitive, so it is great to see regional universities attracting students from the region,” she said.

“I want to take this opportunity to congratulate those undergraduates who were recognised at the assembly and I’m sure they will succeed in the future because the school has prepared the students well to participate as citizens and leaders both locally and globally.”

The number of students choosing to further their education gives credence to Mareeba State High School’s commitment to excellence.

MSHS welcomed their new Gifted and Talented Coordinator, Stefanie Prizmic, who has taken over the role from the well-respected Christina Ellacott who retired last year.

MAREEBA State High School’s Gifted and Talented Program has been a major component of the school’s sustained academic success since its inception in 2006, and it now has a fresh face at the helm.

Stefanie Prizmic is this year’s Gifted and Talented Coordinator, taking over the role from the highly respected Christina Ellacott who retired last year.

Mrs Prizmic began her teaching career in 2008 at Cairns State High School and was there until 2014, before taking time off for family commitments.

Mrs Prizmic returned to teaching last year in a part-time capacity at MSHS, and it was then she noticed the enormous impact the Gifted and Talented

Program has on the school’s students.

“I saw what Christina did in the role and it was something I was confident I would really enjoy,” she said.

“I was a business and maths teacher during my time at Cairns High, so to be in a completely different role that will challenge me is exciting.

“I look forward to the diversity the position will bring – providing students with pathways and opportunities to achieve success is a key factor as to why I wanted to be the Gifted and Talented Coordinator.”

Mrs Prizmic noted that a high bar has been set by her predecessor.

Four and a half tons of supplies were air dropped to the flood-isolated community of Coen in Cape York at the weekend.

More than 400 people in the remote town have been stranded for most of a month, with all roads into town cut by floodwaters. The Cook Shire Local Disaster Management Group (LDMG), which has been on an alert status for most of this year due to flooding around the region, has been monitoring supply levels across the vast Cook Shire on a daily basis.

“As soon as the LDMG received a request from Coen retailers for supplies, it triggered a massive team effort and the request was approved by the State Government less than 24 hours later,” Cook Shire Mayor and LDMG Chair Peter Scott said.

Coen businesses owners, residents, the LDMG, Cook Shire Council, wholesalers and emergency services all pulled together to expedite the process.

“The request comes from the Coen shops to the LDMG, and we then contact Queensland Fire and Emergency Services to prepare quotes and relevant paperwork and the request continues to the District Disaster Management Group and on to the State

Disaster Coordination Centre for final approval,” Cr Scott said.

Coen retailers then had to order, purchase and organise delivery of the supplies to the airport and the Queensland Fire and Emergency Services provided the air transport to Coen, where local State Emergency Service volunteers are helping unload. Four and a half tons of dry goods, fresh produce and frozen goods will arrive in four planes today and Sunday, February 9 and 10.

Six isolated properties near Laura, about two hours north of Cooktown, also received supplies via a helicopter yesterday. Some of the properties have been sheltering travellers trapped between rising rivers, or students who should have been at boarding school but could not get out.

Time for a change Impact of regional electricity prices to ballot paper As there is a Federal Election looming, I suggest this would be the perfect time to make some changes to the ballot paper. These changes would be quite simple and would have no cost to the taxpayer.

The first would be to have an extra tick box under the name of the last candidate.

This box would allow voters to register a valid vote for “None of the Above”. I believe the results of this would be that fewer people by far would vote informally, and all members of parliament, and new candidates would see absolute proof that we are sick and tired of the current system.

The second would be to have a section entitled, “Do You Think There Should be a Referendum on:”. This would also be a series of YES?NO boxes and the questions could be like: Parliamentary Superannuation Scheme; Parliamentary perks like travel; Parliamentary pensions after retirement and the list could go on.

This would give the voters a chance to tell all politicians and would be politicians what they really think.

The most recent quarterly business survey published by the Queensland Electricity Users Network (QUEN) confirmed regional businesses have faced major increases in their power bills.

Around 740 regional Queensland businesses who responded to the survey experienced a 15-20% price increase for electricity over the past two years.

The survey revealed that about 50% of businesses are experiencing bill stress and this was common across various industry sectors including agriculture, tourism, mining, manufacturing and retail.

These regional businesses underpin regional economies but they’re paying too much for their electricity under the Palaszczuk Labor Government.

Higher power bills means regional Queensland businesses constantly face a loss of profitability, pressure to reduce electricity consumption, increased debt and staff cuts.

Labor’s electricity rip-off is costing regional jobs.

Southeast Queenslanders have up to 20 retailers to choose from while regional Queenslanders have just one.

If elected in 2020, an LNP Government will introduce retail competition into the regional electricity market to drive down prices.

This initiative would ensure that all Queenslanders, including small businesses, can shop around for the best price to reduce their skyrocketing electricity bills.

When will the banks ever learn Again we see the Banks, our Australian Banks ruining their customers lives, taking ordinary people’s homes, farms, stations, lively hoods and breaking up marriages.

Because I am a senior citizen, with all my marbles, fit and healthy I can recall the Banks taking the family farm, ruining businesses and all it entails years ago but it seems they never learn.

Another sad part of this is the damage it does to our Nation, the jobs lost, the heartache, the sheer stupidity of it all when a little patience and understanding would have helped everyone, including the greedy Banks.

Where is their basic common sense, they are supposed to have educated people working for them, surely you look after your customers, help them through difficulties so that they are an asset to your business once more.

Yes I have been in a rural business, I know the difficulties and I have been a Bank director in a small town bank.

Running your own business is not an easy task but our Banks do not learn because they know they will get away with it as they always do because the Nation cannot afford for them to go broke.

The people in charge, on all levels should be dealt with in a manner that will send a

serious warning to those employed it the future and ‘they cannot get away with such behaviour as someone has to pay’.

It’s hard enough to be in your own business, especially in farming with the vagaries of the weather without the vagaries of the Banks kicking in. When will they ever learn?

In addition to the sign on day, the club also recently held its AGM that saw a new executive committee elected.

ATHERTON TABLELANDS HOCKEY ASSOCIATION MEMBERSHIP FEES 2019: PLAY HOCKEY: Mark Knowles (Past Australian Kookaburras Captain, four-time Olympian and three-time Commonwealth games Gold medalist) is encouraging locals to play Hockey in 2019.

Mark Knowles (Past Australian Kookaburras Captain, four-time Olympian and three-time Commonwealth games Gold medalist) is getting behind Atherton Hockey Club to promote hockey as the go-to team sport for 2019.

If you're aged from 5 to 105, we want you. Never played before or not for a long time?

That’s ok – there is plenty of support and assistance for all ages, stages and abilities.

Atherton Tablelands Hockey Association's wants you to join us for a come and try day from 10am this Saturday February 16, as well as cheer on the local team in the City (Cairns Stingers) verses Country (Atherton) social competition.

New President Shirley Godfrey and Vice President Pamela Clearwater encourage you to pick up a stick and give it a go.

The Canteen will be open with hot food and cold drinks at the ready. We will be there to answer any questions and assist should you wish to sign on.

The Atherton hockey family is very supportive, and we love to accept new players to the game as well as urging those who haven't picked up a stick for a few years; or even twenty years to get back into hockey. In fact, we are offering some great incentives this year to make it more attractive.

While hockey is competitive, we want people to have fun, improve their fitness, make friends and enjoy the social aspects of a team sport and being part of a community. Important personal skills are practiced and developed with any physical activity and no less with hockey. It provides opportunities to develop discipline, social and team skills that encourages cooperation and respect for others; What a great foundation!

The great thing about Hockey is it's at the same place and time each week. Games are played each Saturday at Loder

Park, Atherton, with regular timeslots for all grades. Even better is once you pay your Annual fee there are no ongoing costs each week (except maybe a frozen cup).

The first round of hockey will start on Saturday March 16th. Official sign on will be from 23rd Feb with the introduction of the updated on-line registration portal.

Hockey is a cheap sport in comparison to many others; our Annual fee works out to a weekly cost from as little as $7/week for our littlies and $13/week for our seniors. This year we are providing even more support for families with a collection of different financial options – we can assist you with and accept Get Started Vouchers, we are offering a free hockey stick and shin guards for junior newbies, family discounts and even more reductions if at least one parent and more than two children from the same family are playing. Seniors can attract reduced fees for themselves as well, by bringing along friends who get their first-year ATHA registration with Atherton at half price.

We start them young with our Minkies format for our littlies (Under 8's) where they learn skills, rules and as they improve transition to full games towards the end of year. Our DIV 2 kids are aged Under 12, and our DIV 1 kids are our Under 16’s.

We have an Open comp (16 yrs +) for our Ladies and a Ladies Vets competition (35yrs+). We hope this year to encourage more players to strengthen our existing teams and divisions.

Divisions for this year will be finalised once we have all registrations in.

For the last few years our Tableland Tomahawks have travelled down each Friday evening to compete in the Cairns hockey competition. A huge shout out to Phil and Emerson's Bus Company who have transported us up

NOTHING drives competition during your schooling years quite like that of swimming and athletics carnivals, and the new crop of house sporting captains at Mareeba State High School are ready and raring to go with the swimming carnival just over a week away.

The sports captains were officially announced last Tuesday night at the school’s Senior Induction Ceremony, and Kennedy captain Cooper-Joe Bailey said it was an honour to be able to represent the school in a leadership capacity.

“It’s an honour to be named

house captain,” he said.

“I enjoy working with kids, so I thought this position would be the perfect opportunity to be a role model at the school and help the younger students out where I can.

“Added to that, I am also thinking about being a teacher aide in the near future, so this will allow me to prepare for that.”

Cooper-Joe said he is a sporting enthusiast who has a particular love for rugby league, and he hopes his role can help promote the enormous benefits engaging in

sporting activities boasts.

“Not only is sport great for being active and healthy, it also provides the opportunity to socialise and keep you on the right path,” he said.

“I believe playing sport is one of the best things you can do for your state of mind.”

Cooper-Joe said he would like to thank the staff at MSHS for their help and guidance, particularly Ms Newlands and Mr Hodges.

Mareeba State High School’s Interhouse Swimming Carnival is on Friday, February 22.

NRL Road to Regions: Rugby league fans from across the Tablelands got to meet some of their heroes last week as part of the NRL Road to Regions program. NRL players Aidan Guerra and Kurt Capewell attended along with NRLW hopeful Tahlulah Tillett.

PROFESSIONAL rugby league players past and present were on the Tablelands last week for the NRL Road to Regions tour.

The tour, which promotes physical and mental well-being through the participation of sport, saw NRL players Kurt Capewell and Aidan Guerra, former NRL player David Shillington and NRLW hopeful Tahlulah Tillett visit the region to hold rugby league clinics and educational programs around mental health.

Newcastle Knights player Aidan Guerra said the reason he wanted to be a part of the NRL Road to Regions was to share some of the great memories he had growing up playing rugby league.

“If you’re out playing sport with friends, it has an extremely positive influence and effect on your life,” he said.

“That was noticeable during this visit, the kids’ faces lit up

when they got out on the paddock and started kicking the ball around.

“I’m from North Queensland originally, so I’ve seen the impact sport can have on young people in this region – whether that is from a physical, mental or social point of view.

“We’re here to promote rugby league, but at the end of the day it doesn’t matter what sport it is, participating in sport helps bind a community together by giving people with common interests a chance to interact and socialise.”

A strong emphasis of the NRL Road to Regions tour was also to further push the growing women’s game, and that concerted effort is something Tahluah Tillett is thrilled about.

“It’s so great to see where the women’s game has gone over the last few years,” she said.

“Not only has women’s rugby league taken a huge leap professionally with the introduction of

the NRLW, but it’s also heading in the right direction at the junior level.

Tillett said young girls see that there are better pathways in rugby league than there were before, and noted that she hopes she can act as a role model to them.

“I’m from Cairns originally, so I want to show girls that you can have a rugby league career from up here if you’re willing to make the sacrifices,” she said.

“Most importantly though, I’m a Torres Strait Islander, so I want to be a source of inspiration for young Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander kids and NRL Road to Regions gives me the opportunity to do so.”

Tillett said NRL Road to Regions is a wonderful initiative and noted that she hopes to see it expand to more of the Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander communities in Far North Queensland.

Wallace takes the track by storm Mareeba local Erik Wallace has been in a rich vein of form in recent months, most notably of which includes his fourth place finish at the National Junior Sedan Titles in Maryborough.

MAREEBA local Erik Wallace has put together a string of impressive performances in recent months and in doing so has established himself as one of the most promising young speedway competitors in the country.

Erik started his run with a win at the Silver Crown Series in Maryborough in December, which was followed by a seventh place finish at the Queensland Titles in Gympie last month.

Erik carried that strong vein of form into the National Junior Sedan Titles a week later, again at Maryborough, where he placed fourth in a field of 80

competitors.

Erik said his recent success has meant a lot.

“It’s great to have done so well, particularly at the National Titles,” he said.

“I have worked really hard and I wanted to make sure I performed well this year after crashing into the wall on the second lap last year, while battling for the lead.

“There were a lot of quick cars at the event so I’m thrilled to have placed as high as I did.

Erik said he would like to thank his family for their unwavering support since taking up

the sport.

Erik’s mother Rayleen said she is proud to see what he has achieved.

“It’s quite difficult for him to get track time up here so to see the success he has been having of late is a testament to his hard work,” she said.

“Added to that, as hard as he works, Erik is also blessed with plenty of natural ability and he has been fortunate enough to have grown up around a great group of drivers who have provided invaluable advice and coaching.”

Mrs Wallace said Erik’s per-

formance at the National Titles was made all the more impressive after he encountered a flat tyre during his heat.

“He was winning the first heat until he had problems with his tyre,” she said.

“He then had to battle to work his way up to get back in contention, and did so by passing the most cars on the final lap; however unfortunately it came a little too late.”

Erik Wallace is one of an abundance of up-and-coming athletes on the Tablelands who are making their presence known on the national sporting stage.
