THE Mt Emerald Wind Farm officially received federal approval last Thursday afternoon in Canberra from Federal Environment Minister, Greg Hunt. After receiving approval from the state government only a few months earlier, the project has finally leapt over its final major political hurdle. For Port Bajool director John Morris, his team and RATCH Australia, the approval is welcomed – and now gives them a ‘fairly clear road’ in commencing the project. “We are looking forward to moving along with the project,” Mr Morris said. “After almost 8000 hours of study and research, we’ve now reached a point where the authorities are happy with the project.” Mr Morris added that project organisers were happy to continue working with all members of the community in regard to the Mt Emerald Wind Farm – regardless of whether they are for or against the project. “We will address the problems noted in the recent ‘Infrastructure Australia Northern Australia’ audit report, that electricity availability and higher costs in Northern Australia remain a major issue to both residents and business,” Mr Morris said. “Our Community Benefit Fund will

also invest $200,000 per year to fund projects or initiatives that will benefit the local community once the wind farm commences operation.” RATCH project developer Terry Johannesen said he believed the Tablelands economy would benefit greatly from the decision. “Our assessment shows that 100 to 150 million dollars will be spent domestically, with the majority of this investment to be spent locally,” Mr Johannesen said. “Expenditure during operations is expected to be between $13 million to $17 million dollars per year. “Employment during the construction phase can be expected to peak above 150 - while 15 permanent jobs will be created to operate the wind farm - including operations and maintenance, environmental and land management staff and administration.” Federal Member for Leichhardt Warren Entsch said he was optimistic about the project’s future – and was happy for the developers that the decision had been reached. “It will also create 155 jobs during the construction phase, 11 jobs during the operational phase and an additional 145 jobs to be created indirectly during the construction phase,” he said. Julatten celebrates Men’s Shed opening JULATTEN was abuzz with activity last Sunday morning, with the Julatten Men’s Shed officially opened by Mareeba Shire Council Mayor, Tom Gilmore. Support, harmony, and togetherness from the local community, external organisations and the MSC have been key themes behind the facility’s imprint in the Julatten region. Julatten Men’s Shed president Noel Prowse said the purpose of the Men’s Shed was to provide a venue for local men to come along and share their company together. “One of the reasons that we did it was because there were a couple of suicides in the area,” he said. “And had we had this shed up and running then – we may have been able to prevent them. “We’re here for the benefit of men’s morale (and) overall health; it’s just really a place where men can come and have a chat and a cup of tea. “It’s like a male version of the CWA (Country Women’s Association) really. All you have to do is come along and have a talk.” Men’s Sheds also provide an opportunity for men to bring along homemade projects, where they can be completed onsite. Mr Prowse added that he was extremely grateful for all that had assisted with sponsorship and donation of equipment – along with the MSC and Australian Men Shed’s Association, who both assisted with a sizeable portion of funding. The Julatten Men’s Shed is centrally located at Geraghty Park. All new members are welcome to attend and participate.

MAREEBA State High School (MSHS) seniors received a timely reminder about making positive road-related choices prior to the completion of their senior schooling. Led by Senior Constable Aleda Robbins (Mareeba Police – crime prevention officer) and Sergeant Andrew Osborne (Tablelands domestic and family violence co-ordinator), students received a thorough workshop of both theoretical and practical concepts in regard to making sensible choices on the road. “We are here with you today to give insight into the choices you can make on the road – along with the consequences of actions,” Sgt Osborne said. Sgt Osborne discussed some of the major causes of roadrelated accidents and fatalities. These factors ranged from alcohol intoxication, to fatigue and speeding. “Just because a certain speed is signposted, doesn’t mean you have to go that fast (in relation to conditions on the road). “The positive choices that you make on the road can limit your chances of being involved in a crash.” Both Sgt Osborne and Snr Con Robbins gave sobering accounts of certain situations they had attended during their careers. Once the theoretical component of the day had concluded, the seniors formed groups and participated in a series of real-life simulation activities. One of these activities involved the students donning vision impaired goggles and driving a buggy around several witches’ hats. With both schoolies and festive season imminent, it is hoped that the wise words from local authorities will ensure that our youth enjoy their celebrations – but by making positive choices.

Springborg meets with local growers By Justin Fris LIBERAL National Party opposition leader Lawrence Springborg toured the Far North last Wednesday, visiting several major towns within the Cook electorate. Mr Springborg made a special visit to Mareeba during the morning, where he met with representatives from Tableland Canegrowers and the Mareeba Chamber of Commerce. Canegrowers are facing a daily angst about the future of marketing within their industry which as it stands, is a rather murky picture. In a bid to quell this angst, Member for Dalrymple Shane Knuth has put forward a private members bill – in a bid to give growers the choice on who markets their sugar. Mr Springborg said that the LNP is committed to working with Mr Knuth and Robbie Katter (Member for Mt Isa) to ensure that canegrowers get a fair deal. “The KAP put in a (private) members bill before us,” he said. “The option for us was to do our own. I’ve said to Robbie and Shane that we wouldn’t do that. I said that we (LNP) would work with them and make some amendments to theirs – because the problem is, if you go through legislation too quickly, then sometimes things need improving.” Tableland Canegrowers manager Bronwyn Dwyer said she has regularly corresponded with the Independent Member for Cook Billy Gordon on the matter and was confident that he would continue to support local canegrowers.

Rajinder Singh, Maryann Salverti, Tom Maisel, Lawrence Springborg (LNP opposition leader), Joe Moro (Mareeba Chamber of Commerce), Rico Cabassi, Bronwyn Dwyer (Tableland Canegrowers), David Kempton and Claude Santucci met last Wednesday morning in Mareeba – discussing the upcoming sugar marketing private members bill.

Mr Gordon’s vote on this bill could effectively decide its fate. As it stands, he has publically come out in support of Mr Knuth’s bill. Member for Dalrymple Shane Knuth said the importance of the bill was significant for

canegrowers across the state. “This bill will make a difference to canegrowers in communities reaching from Port Douglas, all the way down to the Sunshine Coast,” he said. “If it fails, the impact will be

ongoing to the point of everlasting.” Mr Knuth said he was committed to working with the LNP and fellow crossbenchers, in a bid to ensure that all amendments were agreed upon.

Wind farm will ‘supply a third of our energy’ From Page 1 “This was reflected in the White Paper for developing Northern Australia. “The Mt Emerald project aligns perfectly – once it’s operational, it’ll supply about a third of our region’s energy needs in one hit - without the expense or waste that comes with transmitting electricity all the way from the south east’s coalfired power stations.” Mareeba Shire Council Mayor Tom Gilmore

provided further clarification on how the current decision had been realised. Once realising that the scope of the project was far larger than council resources could manage, Mayor Gilmore spoke with the relevant minister (at the time, Jeff Seeney) who ‘called’ the project in. “A ‘call-in’ means that the project is no longer under the purview of the relevant local government,” he said. “When the state makes a deci-

sion like this on a particular issue, there is no appeal. That’s the way the ‘call in’ operates.” “After the Qld government had put it through its entire fine filters, it then had to proceed through to the final destination – through the ECPB act. “It (the project) has now been filtered very finely – through all the requirements of both state and federal – which are considerable.”

He added: “I know that there will be some people in the Walkamin area that will be unhappy with the outcome. “But I think there comes a time in matters of debate, where once the matter has been dealt with effectively and comes to a final judgement – (that) you have to accept the judgement.”

Mareeba Heritage Centre turns 20

By Justin Fris

MAREEBA celebrated a hugely anticipated milestone last Saturday, with the Mareeba Heritage Centre sharing their 20th birthday festivities with the local community. It is a venue which evokes tradition, history, reflection and stark realities of how life was for those who have gone before us. And if it wasn’t for the foresight of Ron Blundell, Mick Borzi, Tom Braes, Graeme Ford and the late Colin McDowall, prior to its opening in 1995 – we wouldn’t have the pleasure of visiting it today. Those in attendance were able to enjoy the enthusiastic nature of the St Thomas’s school choir, who performed a quality assortment of traditional Australian songs. Once the formal festivities had concluded at 10.30am, several activities and competitions were conducted. These ranged from gold panning to tobacco stringing – two pastimes both rolled and gold in Mareeba’s DNA. Mr Borzi reflected on the embryonic stages of

The ‘original four’ – Graeme Ford, Mick Borzi, Ron Blundell and Tom Braes were in attendance at last Saturday’s 20th birthday celebrations for the Mareeba Heritage Centre.

the project, which began during 1993 in Mareeba during a conversation. “In June 1993, four of us (Tom Braes, Graeme

Ford, Ron Blundell and I) were preparing the rodeo museum for the forthcoming rodeo – and while enjoying a cold drink, we afterwards dis-

cussed the need for what we see today. “Former Mareeba Shire CEO (the late Colin McDowall) was later invited to join our group. So over the next two years, we sought funding from governments, Council and many companies with which we had an association with. “(Along with these were) Services clubs, local businesses and individuals. And I can assure you, it wasn’t easy to raise $252,000. “The names of those who gave $1000 or more are on the large plaque at the entrance of the building. But there are many more who gave lesser amounts.” Mr Borzi also extended his gratitude to the many volunteers and committee members who had dedicated themselves to the Heritage Centre over the last 20 years. Mareeba Shire Council Mayor Tom Gilmore said the day was a special moment in Mareeba’s community history. “It’s all about congratulating those who first had the wisdom and the vision to say: ‘why don’t we do something different’.”

Atherton Show elects new president By Justin Fris

JEBREEN’S DRAPERY

Mick Jebreen migrated from Lebanon about 1900. He became a tinker with a horse and cart selling his goods in the Hodgkinson and Mt Carbine areas. He married 16 year old Selemi Raphel, also Lebanese and they built their shop and home in Mt Carbine. Selemi reports that she sat on the side of the bed for 2 weeks not knowing what a wife was supposed to do in bed. However by 1919, when they shifted to Mareeba they had 4 children. Their first shop in Mareeba was down in the gully behind the state school. Later Mick bought Schernings Saddlery shop, 153 Byrnes Street and started business as “Jebreen’s Drapery and Barber Shop” for Value and Friendly Service. Former President Stephen Hocking and new President Leanne Thomas.

THE Atherton Show Society has elected Leanne Thomas as their new president for 2016, in a major coup for the region. Coupled with her position as secretary of the Eacham Junior Rugby League, Ms Thomson well and truly has her finger on the pulse – which can only benefit the overall experience for showgoers. Beginning her involvement with the Atherton Show in 2007, Leanne worked as a steward in the floral section and in the main office. “I don’t think the general public realise all the time and volunteer hours that go into the show,” she said. “In some cases, we have some

volunteers that work all throughout the year – whether that be improving our sections, trying to build membership or building our relationships in the community.” The Atherton Show Society has always worked closely with neighbouring shows within the region and Leanne is confident that this positive working partnership will continue. Local schools across the Tablelands have also played an important part during show activities; with local secondary school students always welcome to volunteer at the Atherton Show Society and gain valuable workplace experience during the school holidays. If you would like to get involved with the Atherton Show Society as a volunteer, please phone 4091 4260.

Heritage Museum’s exhibit of Jebreen’s Drapery. In 1935, “Myers” of Melbourne sent a solicitors letter to say they were suing him as they had the motto first. Mick sent back an old docket with the slogan at the top dated 1921, years before Myers existed and no more was heard about it. Mick sometimes had people with nits in his Barber Shop and after their haircut and payment, he’d hand them a printed note asking them to take care of this matter before returning. At Xmas time, loyal customers were given a gift of a handkerchief or perfume. After Mick died, the business was handed down to the third generation and when the shop finally closed in c.2003, they had given 84 years of service to the community.

Tree lighting at Carols in the Park

Christmas in Mareeba will be extra special this year, with a new Christmas tree to be unveiled at ‘Carols in the Park’ this Sunday. Locals will be delighted to hear that five new Christmas trees will feature across the Mareeba Shire, with trees to be located at Mareeba, Dimbulah, Kuranda, Mt Molloy and Chillagoe. MSC Mayor Tom Gilmore is eagerly excited about the unveiling of trees and the joy it will bring to the people this Christmas. “The Council realised it was time to renew the Christmas decorations, so we purchased a new tree for each community,” he said. “They just arrived earlier this week and Council will be erecting them shortly; with the tree for Mareeba being unveiled at ‘Carols in the Park’. “This is one of Council’s contributions to

the Christmas season – to bring the spirit of Christmas to the area and allow a time for the community to feel good about itself.” The tree will be officially lit by Mayor Gilmore at the annual ‘Carols in the Park’ this Sunday at Arnold Park; and then relocated to Byrnes Street for the remainder of the Christmas season. The carols kick off at 6.20pm, with a host of talented local singers and dancers performing - plus a special visit from Santa, his elves and a grand finale fireworks display not to be missed. Proceeds from ‘Carols in the Park’ will be donated to the MSC Mayor’s Christmas Appeal to help those less fortunate this Christmas. Co-ordinator Natasha Srhoj from

ANZ supports local groups with much needed funds By Justin Fris TWO Atherton-based community organisations have received a notable boost from the ANZ ‘Seeds of Renewal’ grant program. As a result, the Tablelands Sexual Assault Service and Community Services Tablelands will both receive $10,000 in grant funding. To provide further context, only 35 grants were offered nationwide – and yet, two organisations from Atherton have walked away with a favourable outcome. ANZ Atherton branch manager Matt Bowles was delighted that the township would benefit from the result. “Today is a celebration,” he said. “I’m proud that we are able to support two worthy Atherton community groups’ progress with their programs that will benefit the wider Atherton community. “The grant for the Community Services Tablelands will fund 10 weeks’ training and ag-focused work placements for 10 disadvantaged or disengaged youth to in-

crease work readiness, work-experience and employment prospects.” Tablelands Sexual Assault Service manager Janelle Jacobsen said the funding is to provide body safety and protective behaviours education for the children and staff of day care centres in the region. “Sexual abuse of children unfortunately happens in every community. With the $10,000, we will be able to provide early education on protective behaviours for our children and their carers, and visit each centre multiple times to reinforce the learning,” she said. “Early education about protective behaviours and respectful relationships provides children with healthy coping strategies; and teaching them about the importance of respect and consent in all relationships is an investment in their ongoing protection and wellbeing. “This grant enables us to strengthen the safety and resilience of the children in our community, and we’re extremely grateful to the ANZ ‘Seeds of Renewal’ Program’.”

MSS Principal Mandy Whybird, Josh Srhoj, Troy Gentile, Chloe Reid and Bec Westcott (MSS Business Services Manager) are optimistic ahead of the 2016 funding.

State funding will enhance local school By Justin Fris MAREEBA State School will receive $82,146 in state government funding next year, which will be allocated toward improving overall maintenance of the facility. As reported in our November 25 edition, the Palaszczuk Government has committed $12.84 million in funding towards improving the overall standard of schools throughout the Far North. MSS Principal Mandy Whybird said she was delighted with the news and said it would come in handy for

the MSS schooling community. “It will be accessible to us next year and will be used for facilities,” she said. “It will be very useful, as it will make a huge improvement in the overall maintenance of our school.” Mrs Whybird said that it was important to provide a quality backdrop for students while they are in engaged in learning. “It’s very important to have a learning environment that reflects the 21st century,” she said. “It enhances the students learning; so the funding is very much welcomed.”

Tablelands unites on White Ribbon Day

Members of the Atherton Roosters with TSAS representatives last Saturday.

TRC staff unite on ‘White Ribbon Day’

By Justin Fris RESIDENTS across the Tablelands continued to show their support for those impacted by domestic violence, by uniting together in support of ‘White Ribbon Day’ last week. In a concerning trend across Australia, domestic violence is increasing. Predominantly, these acts are committed by men against women – however it is equally important to highlight that many men are also victims of DV by females; and feel just as vulnerable. Authorities behind the ‘White Ribbon’ campaign are keen to widen the lens of people’s focus on the issue – domestic violence against anyone is not acceptable and will not be tolerated. Tablelands Sexual Assault Service manager Janelle Jacobsen said that White Ribbon campaign recognises the positive role that men play in addressing the disproportionate amount of violence towards women, and uses male leadership in the prevention of violence against women based on the understanding that most men are not violent. “We fully acknowledge that most males in our community are nonviolent; and many are subjected to domestic violence themselves,” she said. “This campaign is absolutely not anti-male and quite the opposite. What is well known and documented is that the largest amount of violence that happens is perpetrated by males against females. “If we can start by addressing this part of the issue, we will be tackling a significant portion of the larger problem. We have asked many local men this week to step up and publicly pledge to never commit, condone or remain silent about violence towards women and it’s been received really well.”

The impacts of DV don’t just revolve around the victim. Children, family, work colleagues and friends equally can feel the pain suffered. The economic and health effects are sizeable and enduring. Staff and management from the Tablelands Regional Council showed their support to the cause, in a heartwarming display of unity and commitment to those impacted. TRC Mayor Rosa Lee Long said: “One in six Australian women have experienced violence from a current or former partner. One in three women will experience violence in their lifetime. Seventy-eight women have been murdered by someone known to them this year. “There is also the issue of women’s violence against men however the over-whelming statistic shows that men’s violence is much more prevalent. “It is not the type of behaviour that should be condoned and those experiencing domestic violence as a perpetrator or victim should seek assistance.” TRC CEO Ian Church added: “Today, TRC staff have acknowledged that they are concerned about the wellbeing of each other as workmates (male or female), our community - along with the wellbeing of our partners, our broader family and our children.” Members of the Atherton Roosters rugby league team assisted TSAS last Saturday morning at the Silo Road Shopping Centre by taking pledges from males, and this outlined their commitment to the cause with the local community. If you, or anyone you know of has or is a current victim of domestic violence, please don’t fall silent. Several local organisations can assist you. These include: Lifeline 13 11 14, Women’s Centre Atherton 4091 5100 and the Tablelands Sexual Assault Service on 4091 4036.

10 years on and over $2 m returned to communities Mareeba and Dimbulah Community Bank® Branches are celebrating their tenth birthday this week, on Thursday, December 3, 2015. Chairman Mr Gilbert Teitzel said the locally-owned and operated branches have grown from strength to strength since their establishment in 2005. “Thanks to community support, and the hard work of our branch staff and volunteer directors we have been able to build the business significantly over the past decade,” Mr Teitzel said. “We have been sharing this success with our communities through grants programs, sponsorships and shareholder dividends.” Since opening its doors, Mareeba and Dimbulah Community Bank® Branches have grown to boast $200 million in

banking business and more than 5000 customers. Mr Teitzel said the Mareeba Shire residents, businesses and community organisations have all learned the benefits of banking locally. “As our profitability grows, so too does our ability to channel our profits into much-needed community infrastructure and services,” he said. “Our branch was set up by the community, for the community, so we are always looking for ways we can help strengthen our local towns.” In the last decade Mareeba and Dimbulah Community Bank® Branches have provided over $2 million to support dozens of NFP sporting and community groups who have received over $300,000 amongst them, with the Community Bank® sponsoring major community events annually.

Approximately $150,000 has been provided to local schools and kindergartens, $562,000 has been returned to local shareholders and nearly $700,000 has financially supported projects and grants. In addition, $1 million has been pledged for the ‘Bendigo Bank Recreational Precinct’, with stage one to be completed in 2016. Mr Teitzel said that the bank is not all about handing out money. “The Board has been involved in lobbying for improved health services in Dimbulah and attracting the pilot ‘Street to Home’ program in Mareeba. “Our role is to support community issues by working closely with the Council and key groups to lobby Government for economic and social outcomes that improve the overall well-being of our communities.”

Ikin voices Hann Hwy pitch in Canberra By Justin Fris FEDERAL Liberal candidate for Kennedy Noeline Ikin has taken her passion of the Hann Highway project to Canberra. Ms Ikin – who has travelled to Canberra regularly during her campaign – said it was important that the project received both attention and funding from the Turnbull Government. “Federal Government funding will be vital if we are to get better road infrastructure in Kennedy and I have been building support amongst Government MPs for money to be spent on key road networks in the region,” she said. “The development of Northern Australia and building the ‘tropical economy’ of Australia has the attention of the Commonwealth Government and the next few years are critical for North Queensland. “Upgrading roads like the Hann Highway and the Gregory Development Road would be a fantastic investment in agriculture and tourism in our region, facilitating faster freighting of produce to southern markets and encouraging southern visitors to travel through inland centres.” The current sitting member for Kennedy, Bob Katter, has long voiced his support toward the completion of the Hann Highway. Ms Ikin agreed with Mr Katter that the completion of the route would benefit not only motorists, but trade, employment and regional growth.

“Sealing the final 100-odd kilometres of bitumen on the Hann Highway will cut 400km off the distance between North Queensland and Melbourne, a major market for produce like fruit and vegetables from our region,” she said. “It would also create a third major north-south route and help ‘floodproof’ north-south commerce and tourism. “Trucking companies tell me that freight flow would increase significantly along this route if the final section was sealed. It would also create another option for tourists, particularly the thousands of grey nomads who visit the north and north west every year.” She added: “I want to make sure the politicians way down south in Canberra know just how important these road projects are to the people of North Queensland. “After all, they are a long way away. Mareeba is almost 3,000 km by road from Canberra via the Bruce Highway – though it would be 400 km closer, if they travelled along the Hann Highway. “But I don’t think they would like the gravel sections along that route right now. I want to change that.”

Fallen speed sign causes contention By Justin Fris A fallen 40km/hr speed sign along Springmount Road, Walkamin, has raised the ire of a family living near Springmount Raceway. The sign is currently located in bushland metres from its usual location – and with the stretch of road quite tight – speeds in excess of 40km/hr are quite dangerous. Carla and Paul Carpenter, who have flagged traffic and noise concerns with Mareeba Shire Council over the nearby raceway, alerted The Express about the fallen speed sign - with hoons causing an almighty ruckus out the front of their house. “Over the past two weeks, there has been much action up and down Springmount Road,” Carla said. “I am speak-

ing in regards to idiots hooning up and down the road. “Recently, for example, one idiot in a hoon-based car was doing in excess of 40km - much in excess of 40km, as we could hear him half way down Chettle Road as he was finally leaving. “To make it clear for you, he would have been doing at least 100km/hr around Springmount Road; and much more down Chettle Road.” Mrs Carpenter said she had contacted the Mareeba Shire Council on the matter and was hopeful that the sign could be erected back in its original location quickly. MSC Mayor Tom Gilmore said he was personally notified on the issue last week and said he would ask to have the issue rectified as soon as possible.

Mareeba SHS to launch ‘ACT’ MAREEBA State High School is in the process of launching a new three point plan, which will be implemented from 2016. Derived from data within the school’s ‘Improvement Unit’ report, “ACT- Mareeba SHS” will focus on student achievement, community standing and quality teaching. Mareeba SHS Principal Scott Whybird said community feedback on the proposal across the entire Mareeba township was vital for its success. “ACT – Mareeba SHS” came about after the idea was put forward to all staff,” he said. “The three themes are based from our ‘Improvement Unit’ report. “For us, it is all about informing the local community about the values that we expect and receiving feedback from them on how we can improve.

Innovative Tableland residents By Justin Fris A committed group of local FNQ stakeholders and residents are continuing to showcase the sheer level of innovative minds across the Tablelands. After the successful ‘Startup Tablelands’ weekend was held in Atherton earlier this year, organisers have decided to hold the 2016 event in Mareeba. In a society with an aging population and a drain of talented youth leaving in droves for greater opportunities, these workshops are critical for future growth in the region. The concept involves a series of people discussing innovation and potential ideas over a 54 hour period. Individuals are then placed into teams and select an idea. They then must pitch their idea, fine tune it, and receive on-the-spot

feedback. A pleasing trend was the sheer diversity of participants in the weekend. Youth and experience moulded together, with a shared bond of enthusiasm and intellect. Several of these participants have also attended various other innovation-based workshops, such as the recent ‘Startup Cairns’ workshop. Facilitated by theSPACE Cairns (business and innovation consultancy), a number of promising ideas were formed – ideas which could greatly improve the future of our region. Founder of theSPACE Troy Haines said: “Traditionally, ‘Startup Weekends’ have been about only developing new ideas, but we found that very few teams went on to grow their business afterwards,” he said. “This time we’ve also encouraged exist-

ing businesses to bring their team along and spend the weekend working on an idea that will help them improve sales or expand their market share.” He added: “Around 30 entrepreneurs pitched their ideas. From that, seven teams were formed to work a select few ideas. “The spirit of the weekend is not about winning or losing, it’s about learning how to turn ideas into reality – whether you’re working on your own idea or someone else’s – and meeting other really cool people that you may work with in the future.” Federal Liberal candidate for Kennedy Noeline Ikin has also shown great interest in the ‘Startup’ concept, with herself and Senator James McGrath attending the function. Both were impressed by the entrepreneurial spirit on display and said they would keep in contact with event organisers.

Steering committee arguments at TRC THE Tablelands Regional Council voted 4-3 in favour of involving two TRC representatives in a ‘Southern Atherton Tablelands Development Scheme’ steering committee on November 19. Representatives on the committee will comprise of two individuals from the Hinchinbrook Shire, Herbert River Improvement Trust and TRC - along with representation from Townsville Enterprise, Advance Cairns and the Department of State Development. Initially, a memorandum of understanding between all parties will be worked through – with the TRC providing $25,000 toward Mayor Lee Long and Cr Stocker’s TRC -related involvement in the committee. The rationale behind Cr Marti, Cr Linwood and Cr Pagani’s opposition to the committee was the fact that they believed it was too close to the upcoming council elections; and $25,000 was too large of an amount to part with without engaging in prior public consultation. Cr Stocker said: “Madam Mayor, I think this is a very important decision to be made. The next important phase will involve consultation with the Hinchinbrook Shire, along with the public consultation phase.”

Disenchanted by TRC’s position

Congratulations Cr Linwood

My family have been going to Genazzano Retreat Caravan and campsite for several years to spend time with our grandsons and enjoy the lake. Gennazano’s would be the cleanest, most well-disciplined and managed facility around Lake Tinaroo. The campsite has excellent toilet and shower facilities, dining and food preparation facilities, power, water and even has a dump site. To our horror, I am advised that from next year, the Tableland Regional Council has banned caravans from using the facility. I am also advised this decision was made without consultation and without exploring other means to affect the desired outcome. It would seem the decision was made because maybe – just maybe - a caravan would discharge grey shower water onto the campground. Difficult for our van, as it does not have a shower; and nor do most small caravans, as any water used can easily be containerised and disposed of in accord with any rules. Some of the larger vans have black and grey water holding tanks, which is why the camp has a dump site. The camp is only open May to November, so surely a better way to achieve the outcome of not putting water on the grass would be to make it a condition of the operating licence; and thus a condition to stay at the retreat. To just ban outright seems somewhat draconian and certainly will upset and disadvantage users of this great facility. Come on TRC! have another think - and do the right thing by all. Mike Rashleigh, Clifton Beach

Words of praise and appreciation for Cr Shaaron Linwood echoed through the TRC chambers at the TRC meeting on November 19, during item 12 of the agenda, when a motion of tribute to Shaaron for her 15 years of service to local government was lodged by Councillor Rod Marti; and accepted by all. Celebrations continued through morning tea with the sharing of a special celebration cake for a special lady’s achievements. What a shame the leader of the TRC, Mayor Rosa Lee Long, handed over to Deputy Mayor Geoff Stocker when item 11 on the agenda was complete. The Mayor’s absence for the duration of item 12 - and again during the simple but special little cake celebration later - was obviously distasteful, and disrespectful. Let us all be well aware, when considering a vote for mayor in the looming Council election, the need to search for better leadership, and strong, honest, everyday virtues. Louise Pensini, Kairi

Double standards by TRC ‘voting bloc’ In relation to the situation with ‘Standing Orders’ in the TRC, Cr Hodge and prospective 2016 councillor candidate Gary Scott are very fond of stating publicly that, with the abolishment of ‘General Business’, councillors may still bring matters to the table under clause 4.6 of the ‘Standing Orders’. After the instance at the last Council meeting, as reported in The Express on November 25, where Cr’s Stocker, Hodge and Lee Long, (with her casting vote) refused such an opportunity to me, this has been proven to be a patently false claim; and they need to eat their words. It is also perhaps an indication of what can be expected under any Council led by mayoral hopeful Peter Hodge, that fairness and right will be locked outside the boardroom. The suggested amendment which I bought to the meeting needed, in Cr Hodge’s opinion, to be ‘workshopped properly’ - yet the amendment to ‘Standing Orders’ that Mayor Lee Long bought to

the table, (to exclude ‘General Business’ and essentially gag councillors) and which was passed with his support and her casting vote, apparently needed no such ‘workshopping’. A fine example of double standards being used to maintain the power bloc. Shaaron Linwood, Herberton

Rural debt taskforce update Like many across the state, I am concerned about the impact of rural debt throughout Queensland, wreaking havoc on families, businesses and communities. Despite government efforts, we have all seen this structural issue rear its head again and again - emphasised by extreme circumstances like current drought conditions effecting over 85 per cent of the state and the previous ban on live export. Like you, we have heard and seen financial suffering first hand though numerous ‘Rural Crisis Summits’ hosted in Winton and Charters Towers, along with various consultation in the Dalrymple electorate. We all know this is an issue of great importance now and to our and future generations, which must be addressed. On Monday, 19 October 2015, the Government announced a ‘Rural Debt and Drought’ taskforce would be established to help identify and recommend solutions to the Government. The taskforce is chaired by the Member the Member for Mount Isa, Robbie Katter, and includes cross-party representation, as well as representatives from agricultural industry bodies, local government and others with relevant expertise. The KAP have long advocated for a ‘Reconstruction and Development’ board to stabilise the finances of desperate primary producers. To achieve this, it is important we have your help to illustrate the issue of rural debt. We are seeking your submissions and participation at the number of public hearings that will be held across Queensland. Public submissions close on December 18 and can be made in writing to the Secretariat via ruraldebtsecretariat@ daf.qld.gov.au. The dates for the public hearings can also be found at https://www.daf.qld.gov.au/ruraldebttaskforce. Please be in touch should you seek further information. Shane Knuth MP Member for Dalrymple

CRISIS accommodation for men across the Tablelands has long been an issue that many in the community have chosen to overlook – until now. With rental vacancies across the Tablelands hovering around 1 per cent, cost of living pressures and an increase of domestic violence, men in need of assistance are up against it – should they require shortterm emergency accommodation. While the majority of the focus of domestic violence and trauma cases are justifiably centred on female victims, a grim reality is that males are also impacted by violent female partners. What happens to a male who is caring for children and his partner is subsequently either violent or incarcerated - and they are forced to leave their home. Where do they go? Tablelands regional councillor Shaaron Linwood said she was extremely concerned about the issue and had met with the Member for Dalrymple Shane Knuth on the matter. “We met with Shane the other day and outlined

the issues we are aware of, and are still awaiting the Minister’s response on Shane’s question about how much funding is allocated for such issues in the Dalrymple electorate,” she said. “At the ‘Safer Communities’ meeting, we had a good discussion about how these issues are being dealt with currently by the various agencies; and it seems that all such issues of homelessness, need for housing are referred to Mareeba Community Housing Company, in a bid to try and assist.” She added: “The very real need for more affordable housing came out of the discussion - and also the problem that the agencies face when trying to get appropriate funding to provide more affordable housing, particularly in the Southern Tablelands area, in that the demographics who have this need are often such a floating population and it is very difficult to get the data that is needed to back up any applications for better funding.” Mr Knuth said he was monitoring crisis accommodation options within the Dalrymple electorate and spoken in detail on the issue in parliament; and would continue to lobby with local stakeholders.

The LAND 2015 crushing season ends at Mossman THE 2015 crushing season at the Mossman Mill officially ended last Thursday, with final season statistics released to the general public. Overall, 13,754 hectares of sugarcane were harvested (slightly down from 13,981 in 2014), with 1.2 million tonnes crushed (up from 1.1 million tonnes in 2014). The Mossman Mill was also able to produce 150,000 tonnes of raw

sugar for domestic market usage, with 50,000 tonnes of J-Spec sugar exported directly to Japan. Mackay Sugar’s Mossman Mill General Manager Haydn Slattery said despite dry conditions, crop totals were able to increase. “This year’s crush saw approximately 955,000t of cane crushed at Mossman Mill and 256,000t toll crushed at MSF Sugar’s Tableland

Mill,” he said. “An average of 87.7t of cane per hectare was harvested, which was an increase of 7 per cent on last year’s result of 81.6t. “The mill operated reasonably well, crushing 33,000t of cane over most weeks,” Mr Slattery said. An extensive capital and maintenance program is now underway to prepare the mill for the 2016.”

SUGAR REPORT Prices hold firm at

Mossman Mill crushed 33,438 tonnes at an average CCS of 12.53 for week 28 of the season. The factory has now crushed 933,582 tonnes of cane for the year at an average CCS of 12.56.

Heavier cows steadied, with 2 C4

scores reaching 270.2 c/kg ($1,438.82). Midweight heifer types sold well, with 1 C4 score realising 274.2c/kg. Lighter bulls gained some prominence and sold to a top of 232.2c/kg. Many quad related accidents can be avoided if riders and workers attend a credited quad safety course.

Prevent quad related trauma By Dick Eussen ORVs are banned in national parks, unless they are registered. However, it does not stop their use by park rangers and the traditional owners who live in and control many national parks on a “partnership” basis. The North QLD quad rider club is urging the Government that ORVs be licensed with a “conditional registration” certificate - the same as for farm and mining industries. Provisional licenses for ORV owners are already available for special purpose events like the 3000km ‘Cape York Extreme’ quad ide, thus why not full conditional registration for all? It would be a windfall for the State. The license conditions suggested by the club include driver training to

ensure that riders know how to ride their machines properly- but seeing that the QLD Government’s Transport Department and WorkSafe did not think of it first, they appear to be ignoring the recommendations coming from people who live and breathe quads. In the meantime riders, council and farm workers, continue to have quadrelated injuries and deaths. Proper training courses - conducted by highly qualified trainers - are available for those interested in making the use of these escape machines much safer and drivers more skilled at heading into the great outdoors and back safely without incidents. In retrospect, ORVs are only as safe as the driver makes it. Accredited operator training is available from Colin Lawson, phone 0427 911 835 or visit: www.quadsafeaustralia.com.au

Technology could aid Panama TR4 fight BIOSECURITY Queensland believe mobile technology could aid further spread of Panama Tropical Race 4 disease in the Far North. By streamlining their personalised Panama surveillance, Biosecurity Qld believe that it will assist with quicker data collection. Panama Disease Tropical Race 4 program leader Rebecca Sapuppo said the mobile application could take in a considerable amount of surveillance data at any given time – which led to on the spot decision

making opportunities. “The Panama surveillance program covers 105 commercial banana farms and a large number of residential properties located throughout North Queensland,” she said. “This includes investigating public reports of suspect Panama Tropical Race 4 plants right across Queensland, so the surveillance, sampling and testing program is a crucial but time-consuming task. “By using the Panama response app, we don’t have to manually

1. In a food processor, pulse Oreos until finely ground with mixer running slowly pour in melted butter and pulse until evenly coated. Pour about 2 1/2 Tbsp of the Oreo mixture into 6 serving cups and level, set aside. 2. Melt white chocolate and allow to cool until just barely lukewarm. Whip heavy cream until soft peaks form. Add 3 Tbsp powdered sugar and whip until stiff peaks form, set aside. 3. Whip cream cheese until smooth and fluffy. Mix in remaining 5 Tbsp powdered sugar and 1/2 tsp peppermint extract. Stir in cooled white chocolate (if you want to tint half with red food coloring then separate half into another bowl and tint then add half of the whipped cream to each) then fold in whipped cream. Spoon mixture into a piping bag evenly. Pipe over oreo layer in cups. Chill in refrigerator 2 hours. Garnish with either crushed candy canes or peppermint white chocolate dipped mini Oreos just before serving. If doing the peppermint white chocolate dipped Oreos, simply melt some white chocolate and dip mini Oreos in melted white chocolate. Transfer to wax paper and sprinkle with crushed candy canes before chocolate sets. Allow to set at room temperature.

The First Address To Inspect… www.4880.com.au e oP

This magnificent rural property of 132 acres is ideally suited to hay production, horses, cattle and all other rural pursuits that require good well-draining soils, water and perfect weather conditions. The property has just recently been fully cleared of all timber and boundary fenced with four barb wire with gal pickets, the rectangular shape of the property has long symmetrical length boundaries making for and ideal lateral movement set up. The living area of approximately 2-3 acres is tightly positioned to the south west corner of the property with pet fencing and is blessed with a beautiful large rustic 4 bedroom timber home fully air-conditioned with massive out-door veranda equipped with plumbed-in pot belly stove/heater just perfect for those large outdoor family gatherings. The property has a sealed road to the front gate and is approximately an easy 20 minute drive to Mareeba. This is definitely one rural block with great opportunity starting from a blank canvas to establish a business with all the hard work done, irrigation licence, three phase electric pump in place with gravity fed domestic water servicing the homestead lawns and gardens.

This split level home has been built on the side of the street that slopes down towards the Barron river. When you enter the property from the street level you end up in the top of the house where you have a kitchen, dining and living combinded, three bedrooms and a bathroom. From there you can take the stairs or walk around the house and down to all that extra space. All inclosed and newly modernised, huge room that could be anything you want it to be: party room, rumpus/family room, studio etc. You will also find another bathroom, toilet and another room. If you have children that is where they will be or in the yard that you can climb a hill and run down again. I have watched the owners kids do it on foot and on bikes and it looked like alot of fun.

Brand new colourbond fence is blocking off the streets traffic but as the house is nice and high you don't loose the great views of nature and Cairns hills. Come and inspect anytime just give me a call first. Inspect by appointment today with Elizabeth Bors at Altitude Realty Mareeba. EXPRESS sPORT Gladiators commence pre-season training By Justin Fris

THE Mareeba Gladiators officially began their 2016 preseason training campaign last Thursday evening at Davies Park. It was an opportunity to witness newly appointed coach Josh Stowers, who has recently returned to Mareeba from Townsville. It took less than a minute to establish that the Gladiators are on the money with choosing Stowers as the man to lead the senior playing group next season. A proven winner in rugby league, Stowers has an excellent comprehension of planning efficient training ses-

sions – tailored with benefits his side. Rather than focusing on one particular discipline for an entire training session, there is an obvious balance of fitness, conditioning and ball work. Drills were short and sharp. Camaraderie was high in the playing group and Stowers was able to instantly build rapport with the players. After a disappointing 2015 season, many of the Gladiators faithful may have been hoping that a bright offseason could snowball into a finals appearance in 2016. They may have just received an early present from Santa Claus, only weeks out from Christmas Day.
