Students recognised for community service

AS STUDENTS from across the state converged on Parliament House in Brisbane to take part in The Order of Australia Secondary Schools Citizenship Awards last weekend, Mareeba State High School (MSHS) was wellrepresented.

The awards recognise students for their community service work both in and outside of school, and MSHS students Joshua Theakston and Shenetty Makoti were two of just twelve recipients state-wide who were acknowledged for their prodigious involvement in such initiatives.

“It was a great honour, it is nice to be acknowledged for something like this, and it made me realise that I am doing well in the community and that I should keep it up,” Josh said.

Joshua, who is one of Mareeba High’s school captains, is involved in an extensive list of community service initiatives in greater Mareeba, of which include coaching at the town’s swimming pool, assisting at the local youth group, and helping establish a local scouts unit among many others.

Joshua noted that the support from the school and his parents are a big reason behind him receiving the award.

“A big part of that is Ms Ellacott, who has helped us immensely throughout this entire process, in particular with our applications.

“I also want to mention my parents; they have been extremely supportive of me in everything I do.”

Fellow award winner Shenetty Makoti reiterated Josh’s jubilance in winning the award, alluding to what it means to her personally.

“It’s pretty nice to win, because sometimes you think that everything you do within the community goes unnoticed,” she said.

“So to be told thank you via this award really means a lot.”

Shenetty was recognised for her charitable efforts on both a local and international scale.

Shenetty has volunteered at the Mareeba Hospital as well as at non-for-profit organisation Lifeline, however, arguably her most important work is on another continent.

Shenetty took time to thank those who have contributed in her community outreach efforts.

“As Josh mentioned, I want to thank Ms Ellacott for all of her

help and support,” she said.

“I also want to recognise Mr Whybird, he is always involved with the students in some capacity and encouraging them to be a part of these events.

“Lastly I want to thank my parents for coming along and

supporting me, I couldn’t do any of this without them.”

The two award winners give further credence to MSHS’s stellar reputation, with the school now boasting 11 Order of Australia Citizenship Award recipients in the past 20 years.

Mareeba girl makes her mark at Youth UN comp ISSUES of international importance were front and centre in Cairns last Saturday as part of Queensland’s Youth United Nations Public Speaking Competition.

Held at the James Cook University campus, students participating in the competition were tasked with speaking on solutions to world problems such as nuclear warfare and women in Parliament.

Their solutions were heard by a judging panel in the form of a speech and an interview fo-

rum.

Mareeba State High School’s Gamuchirai Makoti was one such student who participated in the regional event, placing second and achieving executive status in the state’s Youth United Nations in the process.

Gamuchirai said it was a rewarding exercise that taught her a lot.

“With everything going on in the world at the moment, the thought of being a part of change is what inspired me to be involved with this competition,”

she said.

“Ms Ellacott came to me with the idea and I have to thank her for that.

“The experience was great and I would definitely recommend other students to participate in the future.”

Part of Gamuchirai’s role as runner-up Executive for the Youth United Nations allows her to attend camps in Brisbane and throughout the state, of which provides innovative workshops and educational programs to help enact further change.

Federal funding achieved for Mossman Mill

CANEGROWERS can breathe a sigh of relief after Leichhardt Federal MP Warren Entsch revealed last week that the Federal Government is allocating $20m dollars in funding to save the Mossman Mill.

The commitment in funding will be used as part of the new Daintree Bio Precinct transition project which the Far Northern Milling farmer’s co-operative hopes to have up and running in the next three years.

The Daintree Bio Precinct transition project is one that will expand the business by building a refinery to create bio-based butanediol, which will replace petrochemicals made to produce

plastic.

The announcement spells good news for the region’s cane growers, with the mill unlikely to be crushing next season under the current ownership.

With current owner Mackay Sugar Ltd displaying no desire to operate the mill next year, and no other logical buyer, the survival of the Mossman Mill became dependent on the farmers themselves subsidising it.

Far Northern Milling’s Secretary Bronwyn Dwyer was ecstatic with the announcement.

“We are really pleased for the growers as it gives them a future away from the raw sugar market,” Ms Dwyer said.

“The raw sugar market is extremely volatile, so this alter-

nate product will provide growers with a constant return every year, ensuring that they know their businesses remain viable.

“We know that at this moment in time without value adding, no sugar mill is profitable, which is why we need the business case with value adding to stack up in order to sustain the mill.”

Ms Dwyer noted that even though it is fantastic news for the sugar-cane industry in Far North Queensland, there is still plenty of work to be done.

“The confirmation of funding still relies on the completion of a positive business case, however that is something we’re confident we will achieve,” she said.

to receive funding from the State Government to add further financial strength to our vision.”

Far Northern Milling and Tableland Canegrowers Chairperson Maryann Salvetti, largely echoed Ms Dwyer’s jubilance with the Federal Government’s announcement, and was quick to heap praise on those involved with the campaign for funding.

“Yesterday’s announcement from the Federal Government was an amazing milestone for us to meet in moving forward with our potential purchase of the Mossman Mill,” she said.

“It’s been a really long road and for it to come to fruition is enormous for the region.

“Once the precinct is in operation, the town of Mossman will benefit with 60-100 jobs created as a result of the value adding.”

Mrs Salvetti said she wanted to convey a very big thank you for the support the growers have given FNM, Tableland Canegrowers, Mossman Canegrowers and the Australian Cane Farmers Association (ACFA).

“This was all made possible due to the growers staying united and having the same vision for

the future, and this positive news isn’t just for the growers of today, but also for the next generation of growers,” she said.

“We’re a small group of growers in the northern part of Australia that have been recognised by the Federal Government as having a vision for our future and the future of the Mossman community, and to have the backing of key political figures throughout the country is great to see.”

The business case is set to be put forward before the end of November.

Council urges residents to comply with water restrictions

Tablelands Regional Council is urging residents on the Tablelands to comply with the current level two water restrictions that are in place.

TRC Mayor Joe Paronella said the prolonged dry weather has seen a faster than expected drop in flows at our

surface water intakes and our bores have been working overtime.

“While level 2 restrictions are in place, residents can only use sprinklers and watering systems 6–7am and 6–7pm," he said.

“Odd numbered houses

can use sprinklers and watering systems at these times on Tuesdays, Thursdays and Saturdays; and even numbered houses on Wednesdays, Fridays and Sundays.

“Handheld hoses fitted with trigger nozzles, watering cans and buckets can be used

at any time,” The call for greater compliance came again from TRC last week after water use in Ravenshoe was found to be exceeding water supply capacity.

An increase in sprinkler patrols has been ordered as a

result, and anyone not adhering to the water restrictions could be handed a penalty for non-compliance under the Water Supply (Safety and Reliability) Act 2008.

In a press release put out by the TRC, it stated that if current levels of use continue

to rise, they will have to connect Ravenshoe to emergency water sources, which may result in the return of boil water notices.

“We had nearly half of the bookings sold within less than two hours, and I think that’s indicative of the professional manner in which we run the event,” she said.

“We have made a concerted effort to continually reinvent ourselves, and that will be evident even more so in 2019 with a new layout that will consist of

some awesome attractions for both young and old.”

“We have developed a pretty good reputation over the years, and I’m confident next year’s will be our best yet.”

Mrs Portella noted the many benefits the region experiences as a result of the bi-annual event.

“It is a fantastic event for the entire region, as it is not only great for the economy, but it also acts as a worthwhile community initiative with proceeds raised going back into the region,” she said.

tions to everyone in the Rotary FNQ Field Days Committee who has toiled away tirelessly to ensure the event runs smoothly.

Farmers are data-rich but must learn how to collect and understand the information available at their fingertips to maximise the commercial opportunities available, a Mareeba ag-tech forum has heard.

The Digital Farm workshop launched the new Feeding the Future – Agrifood Career Pathways in Technology Transformation project, which is helping Far North Queensland’s agricultural sector meet the challenges of the digital world.

It is funded under the State Government’s Training in Emerging and Innovative Industries Fund (TEII), with FNQ Growers the auspicing body.

Rob Olver, a digital business advisor with AusIndustry’s Entrepreneurs’ Programme, said data was “king” in agriculture.

“At the end of the day, data is

where money will be made,” Mr Olver said.

“The commercial proposition facing everyone now is information and how you use that information and make it work.

“As farmers you are data rich, and importantly data rich. It will be rivers of gold.”

Mr Olver outlined the current landscape in the fast-paced, challenging world of ag-tech where consumers and end users are digital and savvy but business is hesitant to take the first step.

“You can’t sit back and not participate,” Mr Olver told the gathering of farmers and supply chain stakeholders.

“You have to engage.”

Mr Olver said great digital strategies served the needs of people.

“If you want to be guided by one thing the whole time, think

about who is using your product,” Mr Olver said.

“It has to be focussed on the end customer or consumer.”

Mr Olver said Australia was ranked between 16 to 23 in the world for digital adoption, a ranking which has prompted the Australian Government to invest heavily in a suite of programs to improve tech adoption in business.

“Everyone is in tech in some way – we’ve now got email and websites and we are doing things in our business but we are relying on old copy of MYOB,” Mr Olver said.

“It’s “good enough” but we are just getting by.

“Ag has got the ability to get ahead of the curve. The driver of ag tech is performance and price.

“There are so many products and decisions to make and it’s a

complex, fast changing, dynamic environment but it’s not the moment to stop, it’s the moment to start.”

TEII Project Officer Leanne Kruss said the workshop was a success, with a number of participants keen to continue to work on with the project for training and workforce planning.

“Digitisation has become a business priority,” Ms Kruss said.

“For years now, agricultural enterprises have grappled with internal data management.

“Digitisation has accelerated this change.

“It changes the traditional frameworks farms operate in and makes it vital that they evolve to remain competitive.

The workshop was also supported by AusIndustry’s Entrepreneurs’ Programme.

The fundraising event will see teams walk together around Davies Park raising vital funds to support people affected by Cancer in our community.

Tablelands Relay For Life team ‘Hope Starts with Us’ are gathering together for a unique family getaway at the community event – it’ll be the third time they’ve done this.

Team captain, Jennifer Batchelor, said fighting cancer is a family affair and the team was looking forward to the tenth annual event on November 10.

“Both of my parents are cancer survivors - luckily they were able to detect and act upon it early, so now they can join us for the cancer survivor walk at Relay,” she said.

“We’ve been trying to give back to the community and raise funds for the good cause ever since, but a good fight doesn't come without a great loss as we lost my mother-in-law to cancer, so we are going to dedicate our participation in the candlelight ceremony to her.”

Mrs Batchelor said her family really appreciates the work that Cancer Council Queensland does, as back when they were going through their cancer journey,

they used the Transport to Treatment service in Brisbane.

“That’s why we are proactive in taking part in various activities to raise funds for Cancer Council Queensland; thus far we managed to raise over $1,400,” she said.

“With a $2,000 goal in mind and creative approach, I decided to invite my friend to do professional massages at Relay for a gold coin donation to relax the sore muscles of tireless lapping.

“I also love baking, so it was a no-brainer for me to do a cake stall at the local supermarket to kick off the fundraising for our team, and my family also did car washes and sold raffle tickets to help us reach our goal.

Mrs Batchelor said there are many ways to fundraise, while having loads of fun with your loved ones, and participating in Relay For Life is one of the ways to do so.

The ‘Hope Starts with Us’ team encouraged the community to join them at Relay and pass on the baton at Davies Park to

honour the current patients, their carers, and remember loved ones lost to cancer.

All funds raised at Tablelands Relay For Life go towards Cancer Council Queensland’s vital work in cancer research, prevention and support.

Cancer Council Queensland CEO Ms Chris McMillan said continued support of Tablelands Relay For Life would allow the charity to achieve more.

“Tablelands Relay continues to make a vital difference to our work,” Ms McMillan said.

“More than 1430 people in the Far North Queensland region are diagnosed with cancer each year and Relay For Life enables us to reach out and support those people.

SCHOOL DUX: School captain Joshua Theakston took out eight awards the Mareeba High School presentation night, including Senior Dux.

MAREEBA State High’s school captain Joshua Theakston capped off an impressive week after taking home eight awards at the MSHS annual Awards Night last Wednesday.

That comes just a day after the school recognised Joshua as a recipient of the Order of Australia Award at their school Parade.

Joshua’s numerous academic feats honoured on the night include subject awards in chemistry, mathematics B, mathematics C and physical education, to go along with an Overall Academic Achievement Award.

Joshua beat out plenty of strong opposition to win the Mareeba Lioness Club Citizenship Award, the Sonia Fenwick Trust Bursary and the Caltex AllRounder Award.

That all culminated in Joshua being acknowledged in what is the most prestigious award of the night, Senior Dux. “It was definitely something I aimed for at the end of year to finish off what has been such an enjoyable senior year,” Joshua said.

“I was aware that I was in the running for these awards; however I definitely wouldn’t have been surprised if others had received them as there are plenty of talented students throughout the school.

“All in all, to be acknowledged for my efforts both in and

outside of school is something really special.”

Joshua noted the enormous help provided by MSHS in ensuring he reached his full potential.

“There are so many extracurricular activities MSHS offer that have given me the tools to prepare for my next chapter, all of which have helped boost my personal motivation,” Joshua said.

Joshua said he would like to give special thanks to fellow students and staff members at MSHS along with his family for their unwavering support throughout his schooling years.

Joshua plans to go to Brisbane to study Biomedicine at the University of Queensland next year, with the goal to transfer to a Bachelor of Medicine in the future.

Students shine at St Stephen’s awards night excellence: Runner-up Dux and Rotary All Rounder award winner Elena Pilat with year 12 Dux Ellena Spena.

WHILE it may be less than a decade old, St Stephen’s Catholic College continues to make a name for itself with the abundance of academic, sporting and artistic talent it boasts.

That talent was on full display last Tuesday as students, teachers and family members packed into the Mareeba International Club for the school’s annual Awards Night.

Although there are a number of students whose achievements deserve recognition, two students’ commitment to excellence stood out from the rest.

Ellena Spena and Elena Pilat, who were the school Dux and runner-up Dux respectively, were acknowledged for their overall academic prowess.

“Winning this award means that all my hard work throughout high school has paid off,” Ellena said.

“The help from both my teachers and especially my fam-

ily has been immense, so achieving this award couldn’t have been done without them.”

Ellena said she is looking forward to starting her university career, with plans to attend Queensland University of Technology majoring in medical imaging, and if her academic resume this year is anything to go by, she should take to it like a duck to water.

School captain, Dux runnerup and Rotary All-Rounder Award winner Elena Pilat echoed Ellena’s joy regarding her accomplishments.

“It is a huge honour,” Elena said.

“Over the past few years I have really enjoyed and invested a lot of time in my schooling, so to receive these awards as recognition of my efforts is fantastic.

Elena spoke glowingly of St Stephen’s and attributed a large part of her success to the school’s dedication to bringing the best

out of their students.

“The school is fantastic at supporting everyone’s strengths, whether it’s academic, sporting or cultural,” she said.

“I feel like the things that I have been exposed to and experienced at St Stephen’s have prepared me for my future career.”

Elena also took time to thank those who have helped throughout her schooling career.

“I obviously want to thank my parents, they have been huge supporters of me and without them none of this would be possible,” she said.

“I also want to mention all of the teachers who have been extremely helpful, especially Mrs Pinese, she’s really been instrumental in making sure we get out of our comfort zone and participate in worthwhile school activities.”

Elena is hoping to study Medicine at James Cook University in Townsville next year.

Remembrance Day Community Spirit alive and well on the Tablelands Yungaburra Beautification decided to help with the 100 year Commemoration of Armistice Day. As a result, a keen band of Community ladies have knitted or crocheted red poppies to be featured on a 2 meter high ‘100 sign, marking 100 years since Armistice Day in 1918.

The sign has been achieved through generous Community partnerships with Tableland Hardware donating the ply, Sign Hub of Tolga designing and

etching out the ‘100, and the Malanda Men's Shed producing the sign.

The sign which will be covered in the red poppies will feature at the Yungaburra Armistice 100 year Commemoration on Sunday morning the November 11 at 10.15am at the Memorial Gates.

They will also be used as a backdrop for the storytelling session in the nearby recreation shed to follow the ceremony.

Mareeba to pay tribute to fallen soldiers SILENCE will fall on Mareeba’s Anzac Park this Sunday as residents will gather to commemorate the brave servicemen and women who have died in the line of duty.

This year’s Remembrance Day is of special significance, as it marks the 100th anniversary of the Armistice which ended the First World War. Mareeba RSL’s Sub-Branch

President Paul McGregorJones said this year’s Remembrance Day will be far bigger than previous years.

“Traditionally we have a relatively quiet ceremony, however this year we are having a substantial one considering it’s the 100th anniversary,” he said.

“The council will be there and we are also looking at get-

ting in contact with some of the local schools this week to see if they want to get involved.”

Mr McGregor-Jones encouraged locals to come and take part in what is a historic milestone for Australia.

“We are hoping for a really strong crowd on hand,” he said.

“Preserving our history is so important, and days like Remembrance Day are a great

chance to teach younger generations about our country.”

For those interested in paying their respects, the service will begin at 10.45am at the Mareeba RSL Club.

From there attendees are invited to make their way to the Cenotaph which will be where the rest of the service will take place.

Slowly Australians returned from overseas to home. That wonderful word, that wonderful place. Not all came back as they went. Gas, shrapnel, bullets, barbwire, shell shock, and seeing your mates die, all took their toll.

Australia lost the cream of our youth, those we badly needed to get this young country of ours moving. A generation of women lost their husbands, fathers, brothers, fiancés, boyfriends, some remained single for the rest of their lives.

Women also were affected by the sights they saw while doing the tasks of nursing and driving ambulances, their lives were also changed. They also lost their lives. Our wonderful animals such as the Walers who could not return to Australia.

Again another generation was gone. Thank goodness not every horse Australia had went to war,

a few remained behind to breed and bring back the number. This would take so long. Both human and animal.

It is believed that nearly 58,000 Queenslanders joined the forces to fight and the Anzac Committee asked for volunteers to create that number of Poppies to make a thoughtful and colourful commemoration to them.

The Historical Society of Mareeba put together 1000 of these, sending them to Brisbane in two large boxes. It is going to be interesting to see what they will become. The Historical Society of Mareeba displayed a great many photos and information during 2015/16, all of which is still available to research/look at in their rooms at Centenary Park. Celebrating 22 years of bikes helping kids TABLELANDS TOY RUN: Bikes helping children in need again this Christmas on November 24.

HISTORY: Ron Blundell, Mary Thompson and Noel Morris were on hand to officially open Jamieson House at the Mareeba Heritage Museum last Thursday night.

History restored The 113 year old Jamieson House, which after a lot of TLC now stands proudly and fully restored at the Mareeba Heritage Museum, was officially opened last Thursday, November 1.

A plaque was unveiled inscribed with the names of the people and organisations that gave time and effort, discounted products and numerous hours of work to bring it back to its former glory.

Students took part in Kelly’s week – an annual initiative implemented to raise awareness for domestic violence.

Kelly’s Week shines a light on DV

MAREEBA State High School continues to get on the front foot in the fight against domestic violence (DV) as they turned their attention to the school’s annual Kelly’s Week recently.

Domestic violence is an issue that has been a central talking point of societal and political debate in this country in recent years, and one that has unfortunately impacted MSHS directly.

Kelly’s Week is an initiative on behalf of the school to remember former student Kelly Morris who tragically lost her life as a result of domestic violence in 2009, and gives faculty members and students alike the chance to stand together in opposition of our nation’s shameful epidemic.

MSHS Deputy Principal Lesa Pershouse said Kelly’s Week is of such significance as it opens discussions amongst students on domestic violence and re-focusses the kids’ energy on saying no to violence.

“Education is the key in the fight against DV, and this initiative is critical in sharing the message that this is a serious community issue that needs addressing,” she said.

“As part of the week, students made a pledge stating ‘I Pledge never to commit, condone or remain silent about violence. I am committed to supporting people around me and in my community to stop violence’.”

“Unfortunately for many young people domestic violence is a reality, so we hope this can raise awareness and help students to speak up if they or someone they know are experiencing DV.” Ms Pershouse alluded to the positive and forever increasing support Kelly’s Week has received since its inception in 2010.

“The response from the staff, students, community groups and the wider community has been great once again this year,” she

said.

“Mareeba Police in particular has been extremely helpful, with Tablelands Domestic and Family Violence coordinator Sergeant Andrew Osbourne doing a great job at relating to the students and sharing the message in a positive manner.”

“Sgt Osbourne also provided important information on the correct avenues one can seek if they are struggling with domestic violence.”

With alarming statistics to the tune of one in five women having been sexually assaulted and/ or threatened since the age of 15 (Australian Institute of Health and Welfare Report 2018), initiatives such as Kelly’s Week are crucial in shining a light on one of Australia’s most pressing matters.

COMMUNITY members gathered on Friday at Atherton’s Anzac Park to pay respect to the 11 Australian women who lost their lives to violence during October, including 24 year-old Cairns woman Toyah Cordingley who was murdered whilst walking along Wangetti beach with her dog on Sunday, October 21.

Organised by the Red Rose Foundation, the Women’s Centre Atherton and Cairns Regional Domestic Violence Service Tablelands, the ‘Red Rose Rally’ was a 30 minute vigil that payed respect to their grieving families. These women are mothers, sisters, aunts, grandmothers, daughters.

57 Australian women have been murdered whilst going about their business in their homes and public spaces this year. None of these women expected or deserved this, and did nothing to warrant their deaths.

We all need to stand together to send a zero tolerance for violence message all across the region.

Prohibitive costs for shade and seating at Mareeba Cemetery I recently assisted a very dear mate of mine to arrange the burial of his brother in the Mareeba beam cemetery.

As we are all aware there are many costs involved in a burial from both the nominated Funeral service company and the Local Government and the total amount.

Once the dearly departed is finally laid to rest the price can vary from a thousand dollars to in this case $12,000.

Analysing the costs from Mareeba Shire Council where the charges of a 3x3metre pop up marquee for shade for the immediate family – cost $75 and 10 fold up chairs – cost $89. Total cost of $164.

As Mareeba has three hundred sunny days a year and Mareeba Shire Council obviously promotes the – Slip

Slop Slap – of sun cream protection for their staff working outdoors, one would think that at the very minimum the Social Obligation clause for our Local Government would dictate that as a good will gesture, the immediate family would be provided with some shelter from the sun/weather along with some folding chairs to assist in their time of grieving as their dearly beloved is returned to the earth – free of charge.

Be aware that the folding chairs can be purchased from K-Mart for $8 each and the 3x3 pop up marquee for $175 – total cost of $255.

Multiply this amount by the number of funerals at the Mareeba Cemetery over a 12 month period?

Unfortunately I feel our Local government is slowly losing touch with community and this is an example of same – these prohibitive costs need to be removed completely

THE winners of the 2018 Tablelands Regional Council Garden Awards were announced last week.

Dry weather was thought to have kept nominations down this year, but judges Division 4 Councillor Samantha Banks and TRC Atherton town gardener Glenn McKeown, still had a tough time deciding on the winners.

The overall champion garden was awarded to Rita and Shane Kenin of Millaa Millaa.

Special mention was made of the Ravenshoe Garden Club members Evelyn Fatur, Jo Klease, Shirley Sheppard and Marie Willis.

This group has worked tirelessly for many years tending the gardens in Grigg Street.

They will be hanging up their gloves and shovels this year and Council thanked them for their dedication to ensuring Ravenshoe’s town gardens have looked the very best.

“Thank you to everyone who participated this year and we encourage you to get working on your gardens in time for next year’s competition.”

Lakeside Garden Centre was also thanked for their support. Each category winner received a prize valued at $120, with runner ups receiving $80 worth of prizes.

Win-win from regional wage subsidy trial

Student Council members along with teachers unveil the mural promoting positivity and wellbeing as part of Dr Bestmann week.

Mural highlights mental health awareness DR Mark Bestmann was a member of the Mareeba community who has left a lasting legacy, and that is evident with the numerous initiatives throughout the region run in his honour.

Mareeba State High has been pro-active in ensuring his passing can be used in a positive way, and have done so by coordinating their annual Dr Bestmann Week.

Dr Bestmann Week, which was held at the school for the third time last week, brings faculty members and students together by engaging in activities and discussions to raise muchneeded awareness surrounding mental health.

One such activity undertaken this year was the unveiling of a mural space courtesy of the school’s student council.

The mural was a two-day project created to promote positive thinking and wellbeing, of which includes the message “Difficult roads lead to beautiful destinations”.

“The student group wanted to do something really lasting, and one of our leaders thought a mural might be the best thing, especially during Dr Bestmann Week,” MSHS teacher and student council mentor Laurette Seddon said.

“They chose this specific de-

sign with plenty of bright colours to show others that whatever you’re going through, whether it’s emotional, physical or social, it will eventually end.

“We hope this mural will be a part of the school for a long time and will continue to remind students that good things are always ahead.”

The mural’s positive reinforcement is just one part of a concerted effort from the school to continue to break down the stigma associated with mental health.

“The recent passing of some of our students really hit us hard, however the amazing thing was

that all of the students, staff and the community banded together to support each other,” she said.

I think that’s a big thing that the kids need to realise, and that is if you are going through something that is difficult, you are not alone. People around you want to help you.”

The unveiling of the mural was just one of a number of activities run throughout Dr Bestmann Week, and is yet another display of the wonderful work being done by our educational institutions to ensure an open mental health and wellbeing dialogue is achieved amongst our youth.

The federal government will invest $60 million to trial a wage subsidy as an incentive for employers in regional and rural communities to engage more apprentices.

Federal Leichhardt MP Warren Entsch said under the subsidy, eligible employers across Far North Queensland* will be able to receive payments based on the apprentice’s relevant award wage rates.

He said from January 1 2019 the new subsidy under the Australian Apprenticeships Incentives Program would support eligible new Australian apprentices.

“The Australian Apprentice Wage Subsidy trial will provide wage subsidy payments to employers who have not previously employed an Australian apprentice or who have not employed one in the three year period prior to January 2 2019,” Mr Entsch said “This includes mature-age apprentices.

“Subsidies will be provided at 75 per cent of the apprentice’s award wage in the first year, followed with 50 per cent in the second year and 25 per cent in the third year,” Mr Entsch said.

“Through this incentive we are securing the skills our regional and rural businesses need to remain competitive and give local students new opportunities

at home.”

“The investment is part of our government’s commitment to maintain a strong vocational education and training sector that delivers the quality skilled workforce our community needs.”

Mr Entsch said the federal government would not take lectures from the Labor Party about apprenticeship numbers.

“When Bill Shorten was Employment Minister, the number of apprentices and trainees in training collapsed by 22 per cent, or 110,000,” he said.

“This is the biggest ever annual decline in our history.”

Small and Family Business, Skills and Vocational Education Minister Senator Michaelia Cash said the trial would see up to 1,630 new Australian Apprentices in areas of skills needs.

She said the new wage subsidy would complement other incentives currently available through the AAIP and support the engagement of eligible new full-time apprentices at the Certificate III and IV levels in occupations on the National Skills Needs List in regional and rural communities.

siblings sporting success LUKE and Tonia-Marie Rantucci were recognised for their excellence on the sporting field at last Tuesday’s St Stephen’s Awards Night, taking out the Junior Sportsperson of Year Awards in the male and female categories.

The brother and sister duo, who recently represented Peninsula at the Queensland School Championships, boast an array of outstanding achievements which have well and truly placed them on Mareeba’s sporting map.

Luke’s most notable achievement was his first place finish in the Queensland School Championships’ tetrathlon event, which incorporates the four disciplines of the 100m dash, long jump, shot put and the 800m run.

The results for each discipline are tallied and added together to determine an overall winner.

Luke was ecstatic to come away with the win and looks forward to testing himself against the best in the country.

“It’s something I’m very proud of, and it is an award that has always been a goal of mine,” he said.

“I will next compete at the National School Championships in Melbourne and I can’t wait to see how I go.”
