Come for a drive, Mr Pitt By Michael Serenc
MAREEBA mayor Tom Gilmore has thrown down the gauntlet to State Treasurer Curtis Pitt, challenging him to come and see the shire’s crumbling roads in a desperate plea for funding. Cr Gilmore was left largely disappointed by last week’s State Budget, despite an announcement of $4.5 million over two years to replace
Dimbulah’s ageing health clinic. “It seems to me that if you’re west of the Great Dividing Range, there’s a bit of a hiatus in terms of recognition of need,” he said. “I had placed a lot of hope that we might get funding for the northern section of the Mareeba town bypass and at least some contribution to sealing 14km of road between Almaden and Chillagoe.”
Cr Gilmore took a veiled swipe at Mr Pitt, highlighting the large amount of funding announced for Cairns in the Budget, where the Treasurer resides. “I would be very pleased if the Treasurer, some day, would seek to find the roundabout at Smithfield, go up the range and talk to the councillors up here,” he said. “I’d like to provide him with a cup of tea and
a drive around so he gets to understand that when we ask for something, we don’t do it speculatively. “We seek assistance as a small, rural council through need.” Cr Gilmore said the Burke Developmental Road (BDR) between Almaden and Chillagoe desperately needed to be sealed. CONTINUED PAGE 3

Top marks for former principal A FORMER high school principal’s devotion to educating generations of Far Northern students has been recognised at a state level. Mareeba Shire councillor Angela Toppin, who recently retired from teaching after 40 years, was given a Lifetime Achievement Award by the Queensland Secondary Principals' Association at a special event in Brisbane this month. A former principal of Cairns State High, Mareeba State High and Malanda State High, Cr Toppin said she was honoured to receive the award. “It was overwhelming, really. I was the only one who got it,” she said. “It was recognition of an outstanding contribution to education and the teaching profession. “My aim was always to achieve the best outcomes for students.” Cr Toppin said she had witnessed several changes in schools over the years, the starkest of which was the use of technology in classrooms. “That did not exist when I first started teaching. E-learning is part of every child’s education now,” she said. “The other major change in my time was the catering for students with disabilities and the provisions made for them.” Cr Toppin said she continued to be passionate about education and praised the Gonski reforms and funding which have led to marked improvements in student literacy and numeracy. Queensland Secondary Principals' Association president Andrew Pierpont commended Cr Toppin on her achievement. “Angela has had a direct effect on the Cairns community and the broader Cairns community in a very profound way,” he said. “That typifies what a principal does these days.”

Local scientist’s fishy discovery A MAREEBA scientist has helped to discover a new species of fish in the Solomon Islands. Dr Brendan Ebner was part of a scientific team conducting surveys in rainforest streams of the Solomon Islands when he came across a small, never-before-seen type of freshwater goby fish. The “tiny cling goby” (Lentipes kolobangara) uses a suction cap on its underside to climb waterfalls and cling to rocks during heavy rainfall and strong water flow. Dr Ebner, who is part of James Cook University’s Centre for Tropical Water and Aquatic Ecosystem Research (TropWATER), said the find was quite spontaneous. “While snorkelling I observed the

beautiful male of this species high up in a narrow stream on Choiseul Island but found that it was like a Mexican jumping bean that refused to stay still,” he said. “The female of the species is transparent and exceptionally drab, whereas the fella has to dress up in red to get her attention.” Dr Ebner praised colleagues Professor Philippe Keith, Dr Clara Lord and David Boseto for collecting the fish on multiple islands and performing detailed taxonomic and genetic follow-up work back in France. The research was funded through the Critical Ecosystem Partnership Fund and was facilitated by many customary landowners, tribes and the Solomon Islands government.

Thank you from Dimbulah IN the wake of the wonderful news of 4.453 million dollars for a new Dimbulah Primary Health Care Clinic, I would like to take this opportunity to thank all those individuals, community groups and organisations that attended public meetings and rallies, signed petitions, sent letters of support and never gave up lobbying for a new health clinic. Accolades are sent to MP for Dalrymple Shane Knuth and his amazing staff who, through their dedication and tenacity, kept this issue at the forefront with State Government while maintaining close working relationships with Health Minister Cameron Dick, Treasurer Curtis Pitt and the Premier. Residents of Dalrymple and Cook are appreciative that the State Government has finally recognised the importance of maintaining essential health infrastructure in regional Queensland and recognising that health services and facilities are much more than a community want – they are a community need. I must acknowledge the marvellous work that continues to be done by Mick Borzi AM OBE, former Mayor of MSC and chairman of COAG. Mick has always stood up and led the way forward - and we all recognise and commend Mick’s amazing achievements throughout his career serving FNQ communities over several decades. Even in retirement, Mick continues to work for this beautiful region to ensure it surges forward towards a bright and sustainiable future. We admire the way Mick says it as it is, and the manner in which he always knows how best to put strategies in place to achieve
positive outcomes. Mick’s achievements are many and testaments to the fact he gets down to business to get things done. His policy “If you didn’t get what you wanted – you didn’t try hard enough” is one we should all adopt. Our communities are eternally grateful, thank you. Gaye Taylor, Dimbulah
Kennedy deserves better representation After decades of bluff and bluster from Bob Katter it’s about time we asked the question - what has he achieved for Kennedy that wouldn’t have happened anyway? In my opinion, not much of any consequence. That opinion was backed up by a large majority of Kennedy electors whose primary votes supported the Coalition’s candidate at the last election. Bob just managed to hang on by his fingertips with the help of Labor Party preferences and we missed out on having an effective member in government who could speak with authority for us in parliament and in the party room. Labor Party/union support for Bob and his party came not only from the direction of preferences but also in the form of hefty financial contributions from the CFMEU and the ETU (Electrical Trades Union). Clearly, these unions must believe their investment in Bob was worthwhile otherwise they wouldn’t be stumping up such generous support. One can only wonder how the agendas of
these unions align with the priority needs of the people of Kennedy? Once again we have an opportunity to make a change in Kennedy away from a micro-party representative who says a lot but achieves little. Kennedy has been bypassed by governments for too long so let’s not miss out again. Ray Byrnes, Yungaburra
Pavetto has strong local ties Following Bryan Connor’s letter in The Express (15/6), how could Katter supporters claim that Jonathan Pavetto is a fly-in fly-out candidate for Kennedy? Mr Pavetto’s ancestors were residents of the Atherton Tableland long before Bob Katter became Member for Kennedy. Jonathan’s great grandparents were a well-respected family who lived near our family farm at Kairi before they chose to move to the coast to reside. Later, I remember as a child visiting them at their cane farm at Halifax with my parents. Jonathon’s knowledge of the Kennedy electorate would be less hazy than the muddling member we have at present. Katter Party supporters must be worried to be making up stories without checking the facts. Bev Prescott, Tolga

IN regard to renewable electricity prices, it is completely erroneous for letter writers to say that Ergon is locking high electricity prices in until 2030 because they have signed a contract to use electricity from a private enterprise wind farm. To say that wind farm electricity costs are three times more than coal fired is strange, especially when one does not know what the price will be. The
price of wind energy has been steadily dropping in Australia, but overseas it has rapidly dropped and in places like Texas it is now lower than non renewable sources. The other non-sensical statement “huge green subsidies of over $500m”. What the? The reason we have high electricity in Queensland is because the semi-government electrical utilities have been unregulated for too many years and have been allowed and encouraged with tax incentives to overbuild the grid infrastructure and they are now trying to get the money back. Prostate Cancer education session Cancer Council Queensland is inviting locals affected by prostate cancer to attend an ‘Understanding Prostate Cancer’ education session this month. The free education session will be on Thursday June 23 from 11.45 until 4.30 at CCQ’s Cairns office at 169 Aumuller St, Bungalow. A light afternoon tea will be served. About 170 men will be diagnosed with prostate cancer in Far North Queensland this year, and many more local men are currently living with the disease or grappling with life after treatment. Following a diagnosis, men and their loved ones can face a range of physical, emotional and lifestyle changes. The session is aimed at cancer patients, survivors, and their friends and family, and will provide information about prostate cancer and treatment options, and offer ways to manage and improve health and wellbeing. It will also provide an opportunity for the community to meet with health professionals and others who have had a similar experience. Anyone who has been affected by prostate cancer is urged to register by calling 13 11 20 or emailing communitysupportservices@cancerqld.org.au by Wednesday, June 22. NOT GOOD ENOUGH: LNP candidate for Kennedy Jonathan Pavetto wants action on mobile black spots in the region.
LNP candidate for Kennedy Jonathan Pavetto has blasted the poor state of communications on the Tablelands, hoping to secure more funding under a Federal Government program, if elected. “Quite frankly, the state of telecommunications in the Kennedy electorate is third world,” he said. “There are places overseas that have a far less advanced economy and a far lower standard of living than we do, yet have better telecommunications.” A recent announcement by Leichhardt MP Warren Entsch that, if elected, Mt Carbine would be included in round two of the government’s Mobile Black Spot Programme has given fresh hope other notorious black spots in
Round one of the black spot programme, worth $160 million, is currently delivering 499 new and upgraded mobile base stations across Australia after locations were announced in June last year. Speewah, Julatten, Butchers Creek, Coen Airport, Darnley Island, Watsonville, Forsayth and the Gulf Developmental Road between Georgetown and Croydon were all earmarked for funding under round one. Locations that have been successful in round two of the program will be announced in the second half of this year, with applications from mobile network operators and infrastructure providers due on July 14.

Region’s produce to go on display A DINNER to showcase produce from across the Tablelands and Gulf region is cooking up a storm. Hosted by Northern Gulf Resource Management Group’s (NGRMG’s) Gulf Youth in Ag team, this Saturday’s “Boots for Change” dinner will feature a three-course meal under the stars at Mareeba’s Blue Sky Produce farm. NGRMG’s education officer Erica Blumson said the dinner aimed to give support to the local farming community. “We have a diverse range of amazing produce in the region and it’s great to support people locally and be aware of what’s available at different times of the year,” she said. “By shopping and eating locally you’re building up industry in your region and creating job opportunities for young people.” Ms Blumson said she was expecting 180 people to attend the event, with about 100 tickets already sold. The three-course meal will feature as many local ingredients as possible to be cooked by chef Leeandra Norman from Love-Lee Cooking. Tasmanian chef Paul West from TV show River Cottage Australia will be guest speaker. The dinner was funded through an ABC Heywire Youth Innovation Grant from the Foundation for Rural and Regional Renewal. To book a ticket, head to www.eventbrite.com. au/e/boots-for-change-dinner-tickets-25713860850 or call 4092 1088. The dinner will start this Saturday at Blue Sky Produce from 6pm. Mixed reaction to State Budget TABLELANDS’ political leaders have given a mixed reaction to last week’s State Budget, despite a funding windfall for health and education facilities. In two big wins for the region, $4.5 million will be spent over two years to replace Dimbulah’s dilapidated health clinic and Atherton Hospital will get a much-needed redevelopment of its emergency department and operating theatres.
The hospital redevelopment forms part of a state-wide health infrastructure program, with $230 million provided over the next five years to 2020/21. Mareeba mayor Tom Gilmore was “thrilled to bits” over funding for the Dimbulah Healthcare Clinic, but felt disappointed several of the shire’s problem roads were overlooked. “Unfortunately, we didn’t tick the priority list
this time but I would hope in future there is some effort to recognise the needs of more remote areas,” he said. In a bolstering for emergency services in the region, $1.2 million over two years has been allocated to build a replacement fire station at Herberton while Dimbulah will get $700,000 for an extension of their existing fire station. Tablelands mayor Joe Paronella was satisfied with the announced Atherton hospital redevelopment and a replacement $3.65 million dairy centre for Ravenshoe State School’s secondary campus. “Certainly, the emergency department and the operating theatre need upgrading, but we are still pushing...for a totally new hospital,” he said. “I think it’s cheaper overall to build a new facility rather than just doing bits all the way through...It’s

got to come into the 21st century.” Cr Paronella said the replacement school dairy facility would ensure the Tablelands’ next generation of farmers could succeed. Both mayors were very supportive of the fiveyear, $77.9 million drought and rural assistance package, which has already begun rolling out in this financial year. “When our agricultural industries are beset by drought, then the greater community, through the government, has to understand the need to assist,” said Cr Gilmore. “We’ve got to keep our farmers on the land, we’ve got to keep the food flowing.” Dalrymple MP Shane Knuth praised the Budget as an overall win for North Queensland. “This is the first time I’ve been elected, for over 12 years, that we’ve started to see funds come out to rural and regional Queensland,” he said. “It’s something myself and Robbie Katter have been pressing very strongly on.”

Australian Sliced Economy Beef Fillet
Contenders clash in fiery debate A WAR of words was unleashed at Mareeba RSL last week, as the region’s three main contenders for the seat of Kennedy battled to win over voters in their first debate together. Hosted by the Mareeba Chamber of Commerce, incumbent Kennedy MP Bob Katter clashed with LNP candidate Jonathan Pavetto and Labor candidate Norm Jacobsen over a range of issues, from dams to the dairy industry and much, much more. In a debate big on rhetoric but small on substance, blistering attacks came thick and fast between each candidate. Mr Katter fired the first salvo in his opening address, blaming the LNP and Labor for the loss of several industries in Mareeba, including tobacco, meat works and timber. “I’m offering the Australian people an alternative... Turn away from that alternative you’re voting for your jailers, you’re voting for the people that destroyed you,” he said. Mr Jacobsen later returned fire on a question about infrastructure, taking Mr Katter to task on an earlier claim he secured funding for two overpasses and a bridge in the electorate. “That was paid for the Labor party when they were in power last time...You had the opportunity to do something for this electorate when you held the balance of power at the 2010 election and you went with the National party. You did nothing,” he said. “I’ll continue to say you did nothing. You’re talking about grand canals, I mean you’re probably going to take credit for building the canal in America, fair dinkum.” While Mr Jacobsen highlighted Labor’s education, medicare, renewable energy and the NBN policies, Mr Pavetto talked up the LNP’s plans for infrastructure and employment.
Mental health also featured prominently with both candidates. Mr Pavetto repeatedly reminded the audience of the need to have a politician from a major party representing the seat in order to attract Federal funding, such as the $5 billion in loans offered through the Northern Australian Infrastructure Facility. “It should be spent in this electorate because that’s where the opportunity is,” he said. “The only way that we’re going to get our fair share of this $5 billion fund is to make sure we’ve got a local MP in government who can work as part of a team and make the case of these projects to the board to get funding.” But Mr Katter reacted with scepticism to Mr Pavetto’s claim, blasting the LNP’s inaction on building dams since first floating the proposal at the 2013 election. “It seems the LNP is going to do a lot of things. In fact, they would be the champion “gunna-dos” of all time,” he said. “All we’ve got this election is another round of promises. You’ve (your party’s) been there for three years, you should have done something.” With a one-minute time limit set for each candidate’s response to audience questions, Mr Katter struggled most to be concise. While both Mr Jacobsen and Mr Pavetto were quick to parrot rehearsed party lines, Mr Katter frequently went off topic, sometimes engaging in long-winded responses that failed to answer the question asked. Speaking after the debate, chamber of commerce president and MC Joe Moro refused to call a winner, saying all three contenders “performed well”. “There were obviously supporters for all three of the contenders here and they all got a fair shake in the questions,” he said. “All three got their message across.”

Community leaders were celebrating last week after the State Government announced $4.5 million in funding over two years to replace the existing clinic in last week’s Budget. The whole town in buzzing,” she said. “We feel a lot better that regional Queensland is no longer unseen and unheard.” Ms Taylor said the existing asbestos-ridden clinic saw hundreds of people each week, with the facility bursting at the seams. “The hallways are too narrow to allow access to emergency services, paramedics can’t get in with their trolleys,” she said. “People that are really sick have to walk outside to get onto an ambulance trolley.” Ms Taylor said the building’s hallways were so small, wheelchair-bound patients were forced to be treated in the clinic car park. Patients are also concerned about a lack of confidentiality because the doctor’s office was housed in the hallway, right beside the clinic’s waiting room. “Whenever other health professionals want to come up to the clinic, because it’s small, they have to work out of one of the storage rooms,” she added. “There’s just no room in there.” The existing clinic will eventually be demolished once the new clinic is complete, allowing locals continual access. Former mayor Mick Borzi said he was “delighted” with the result. “It’s long overdue, but I know the community is grateful for the government’s decision to upgrade a much-needed health facility,” he said. Dalrymple MP Shane Knuth said there was no doubt the clinic had passed “its used-by date”. “This is absolutely brilliant. The community has worked very hard with this,” he said. “I’ve had very positive feedback.”

Solid budget puts council on track A MODEST rate rise and solid financial position will allow Mareeba Shire Council to embark on an infrastructure blitz this coming financial year. The 2016/17 budget reveals a 3.5 per cent rate rise across the board while council undertakes a $25.7 million capital works program around the shire. That includes $6 million for capping (covering) of old landfill at Mareeba Transfer Station, a $1.5 million roads resealing program and a further $1.5 million for two new water reservoirs in Kuranda. For the average ratepayer, the 3.5 per cent rate increase will translate into an extra $38.85 per annum or 75c per week for general rates. Residential ratepayers using council utilities will also cop increases per annum for water ($13.78), sewerage ($28.24) and waste collection ($9.16). Mayor Tom Gilmore believed the budget, which was passed unanimously by council last week, built on the platform provided by the past three budgets since deamalgamation. “As long as this council continues the way it’s going in terms of very conservative spending and... making sure money goes to the appropriate places at the appropriate levels, then we are set for a very good future,” he said. From an operating budget of $37.9 million, council is expected to reap a $4.5 million surplus at the end of the 2016/17 financial year. That money will be reinvested
into council’s reserves and capital works. Cr Gilmore said “town beautification” was an area he wanted to focus on in the coming financial year, with $320,000 allocated for improvements to parks and gardens across the shire. “I just feel that the main street of Mareeba is a bit barren, so that’s the kind of vision that I have which is embedded in this document,” he said. “Other than Kuranda and the Mt Molloy/Julatten area, we essentially live in a very dry place so it’s incumbent on council to recognise that and carefully plan for the kinds of plant species that are going to give us the canopy and the shade to brighten up our towns.” Underground water and sewerage infrastructure was also a growing concern for Cr Gilmore. “Council, over the next five to 10 years, is going to have to do a lot of pipe and sewer relining,” he said. “Underground water infrastructure is going to have to be replaced... We’ve got to ensure this growing town and community has the capacity to continue to grow and provide jobs and opportunities.” Cr Gilmore said it was also important to continue to funnel 1 per cent of the total 3.5 per cent rate rise into council reserves for unplanned projects or scenarios which required emergency funding. “Over time, I’d like to see that build up to a billion dollars,” he said.

Jacobsen sceptical on Hann funding LABOR’s candidate for Kennedy Norm Jacobsen has thrown doubt over sealing the Hann Highway, believing money could be better spent on roads elsewhere. Hot on the heels of the LNP’s announcement of $42.6 million to seal part of the highway between Hughenden and The Lynd, Mr Jacobsen said there needed to be more work done on supporting infrastructure first. “It’s not just a case of sealing it...you’ve got to be able to have good bridges and drainage right through the entire road network,” he said. “There’s no point just putting a strip of bitumen on something that’s going to be flooded two or three months a year.” Mr Jacobsen suggested funding would be better spent in the short-term upgrading the Bruce Highway, which was more heavily used by motorists. “It’s extremely important to make sure the Bruce Highway is maintained, flood-proofed and has more overtaking lanes,” he said. “It’s better to have one highway that is very serviceable that is maintained than spending a small amount of money that isn’t going to fix the problem. “There’s no point doing a half-baked job.” While he wouldn’t rule out an upgrade to the Hann Highway
WARY: Labor candidate for Kennedy Norm Jacobsen has cast doubt on funding for the Hann Highway.
in the near future, Mr Jacobsen said the road was not a priority for Labor. “It’s not something that we’re committing to at present, but there’s certainly a lot of other things that we believe are more important,” he said. “Our announcement of $1 billion worth of low cost loans for tourism infrastructure will allow areas like Mt Isa, Julia Creek, Hughenden, the Tablelands and right up through to Indigenous
communities to really open up the outback.” Mr Jacobsen said other areas of Kennedy, such as Mornington Island, needed attention first. “If it rains, they can’t even land a plane there...It’s critical that they can get in and out. And you can’t get on a boat when it’s wild seas either during the wet season,” he said. “We’ve got to make sure that we invest in the right areas.” The Hann is the Far North’s only inland road to Melbourne.

Shout out to long lost family
TWO prestigious heritage awards recognising an important Tablelands war exhibition have arrived in Mareeba. National Trust Queensland and Museums and Galleries Queensland both gave awards to the Tablelands Heritage Network Group for their “Anzac Treasures from the Tablelands” joint exhibition held last year. The heritage network, which comprises of 12 museum and historical societies on the Tablelands, showcased World War Onerelated objects and stories from the region. The awards have travelled the length and breadth of the Tablelands, exhibited at each of the participating museum and historical society venues. “Our region has a strong ANZAC-based heritage trail and we are delighted to showcase some of the related memorabilia at our museum,” said museum representative Jacqueline Morris. Also exhibited in the World War One display of the Heritage Museum are two unique books, “WW1 Enlisted Service Men from Woothakata Shire” and “Love Story from Gallipoli”. Mareeba mayor Tom Gilmore said the musuem paid an enormous tribute to the service men and women from the Mareeba region who served in World War One.
YOUNG Tablelanders considering a career in the armed forces are being urged to enter an innovative competition. Now in its second year, the “Ultimate ADFA Open Day Experience” gives three winners the experience of a two-day actionpacked adventure at the Australian Defence Force Academy in late August. Return flights to Canberra, two night’s accommodation, a merchandise pack are all included for the winners, who will get to take part in a range of exclusive activities not on offer to the general public at ADFA’s open day on August 27. “As part of their prize the winners may have the opportunity to tackle an over-water military obstacle course, fly a helicopter simulator, watch military displays and enjoy one-on-one time with Australian Defence Force personnel,” said ADFA commandant Air Commodore Alan Clements. Competition entrants must explain, in 50 words or less, why they would make a great leader. Anyone between the ages of 16 to 22 is eligible to enter. Entries close on July 15. A FAMILY reunion commemorating eight generations is seeking to find relatives on the Tablelands. The Gordon family will mark 150 years of being in Australia at a reunion in Bowen this August. Since family ancestors James and Agnes Gordon arrived in Bowen from Northern Ireland in 1866, descendants have since resided throughout Australia. Farming is firmly entrenched in the family, which in the past has owned some 40 grazing properties from the Cape to the Northern Rivers of New south Wales. Six generations of Gordons are still alive today, the oldest descendant being 102 and the youngest just two months. Anyone wanting to attend the reunion is urged to contact Bill Gordon on 3848 9868, Heather Blackband at hbblackband@bigpond.com or Bill Townsend at billtownsend2003@yahoo.com

INDEPENDENT supermarket IGA has dug deep for charity with a donation of more than $195,000 to the McGrath foundation. The money, which was raised through IGA’s Community Chest program across 1300 stores, forms part of more than $720,000 raised for the foundation since 2009. “The significant donation is the outcome of a great number of fundraising efforts across IGA’s network of independent retailers and their teams in stores across Australia,” said IGA Community Chest program chairman Ben Ryan. “We can’t thank our customers enough for their generous and continued support.” McGrath Foundation CEO Petra Buchanan said the partnership with IGA allowed the organisation’s two breast care nurses to continue providing free check-ups to women in Western Australia and Victoria.

New app to simplify tax return TABLELANDS residents are being urged to simplify their expense claims at tax time with a new online tool. Available through the Australia Taxation Office (ATO) smartphone app , the “myDeductions” tool allows people to log their work-related receipts electronically by inputting your expenses as you go. Come tax time, you can upload your completed deductions directly to the ATO to pre-fill your tax return. ATO assistant commissioner Graham Whyte said the tool would reduce the headache of trying to remember what expenses one can claim at tax time. “myDeductions is an easy and convenient way for Australians to track their expenses on the go, as and when they need,” he said. “Typically, more than eight million Australians claim over $20 billion in work-related expenses on their tax return. “By using myDeductions, users will never miss out on claiming a deduction because of a lost or faded receipt again; everything can be stored electronically.” The ATO app with myDeductions tool is available for Apple, Android or Windows devices. New look veggie patch helps kids grow WITH support from local families, staff and students – Walkamin State School were able to rebuild and improve their existing vegetable garden. Soil had to be turned, composted, prepared and then mulched, weeds were removed and loads of new veggies and plants were planted. The end result being a new and functional veggie patch for the school students. The school now has a goal of growing their own vegetables which will be used in a school cooking program to promote healthy eating. With a focus on organic, they are also teaching students and the community alternatives to sprays and pesticides. The school received a grant and support from Atherton Bunnings who provided tools, heaps of seedlings and water cans. A representative from Bunnings also delivered lessons to students about being water wise and the importance of growing their own food.

Charlie’s BroMeliad sale this weekend! For the green thumb in your family! Bromeliads, namely Ananus comosus were discovered by Christopher Columbus on the Island of Guadeloupe in the late 15th century in the West Indies; almost all Bromeliads are native to South America. All bromeliads are composed of a spiral arrangement of leaves which come in all the colours of the rainbow. Different Species of bromeliads require different amounts of light, water and humidity. All bromeliads share a common characteristic: tiny scales on their leaves. These scales serve as a very efficient absorption system especially when found in desert regions where the air is hot and dry and the sun beats down relentlessly. The scales also help the plant to
looking after your bromeliads
reduce water loss and shield the plants from the solar radiation. A great tip for home gardeners is that bromeliads are best grown in a porous, slightly acid to neutral PH mixture that most often contains a substantial proportion of fine Pine Bark. That also provides the stability to support the plant or pup that you
are potting and does not become too compact throughout its life. This is often supplemented with a variety of ingredients, namely coarse sand, peat moss, Vermiculite, Perlite, charcoal, coconut fibre or husks. When choosing a position for your new bromeliads select one that has bright, diffused light as this will enhance their colouration and ultimate beauty.
Bromeliads should be watered until the cup overflows; this should be done when it becomes touch dry. Keep the central cup filled with water during the hotter months but less important in the colder months as with over watering it may become stagnant and this can cause the plant to rot. The roots of most potted bromeliads should be kept moist, but never allow them to become soggy. Plants in the garden will require regular watering in the summer months but less in winter. Mounted plants need more frequent watering and can be submerged for short periods of time to ensure they are well watered. Once your bromeliad flowers, pups will shoot up from the base of the mother plant. Don’t remove pups unless they are at least 1/3 the size of the plant they are growing from.
If you would like to remove the pups use a pair of garden scissors or a sharp set of secateurs, making sure you get the complete base of the pup. Stolons can be removed before potting but can be useful to secure the plant when mounting. Pups are often left to callous before planting and will usually take one to three years to mature. Bromeliads feed though their leaves. Liquid fertilisers are usually best and can be diluted between ¼ and ½ the recommended strength before application. Slow release fertiliser can be added to the mix although fertilisers high in urea should not be used in the cooler months. Best colours are achieved in very good light and minimum fertiliser as leaves become smaller and tighter colouration greatly improves.
Thick leaved plants will generally tolerate the most direct sunlight but softer varieties will not so keep them in shade or partly shaded areas in your garden. Ask Charlie for more information on what’s best for your Bromeliad this weekend at the huge 3 day sale, 210 McGrath Road, Mareeba.

Adam Harvey presents ‘Harvey’s Bar’ live at the Mareeba RSL Highly acclaimed country music star Adam Harvey is excited to present his upcoming tour following the hugely successful release of ‘Harvey’s Bar – The Backyard Sessions’. Multiple Aria Award nominee and 8 time C.M.A.A. Golden Guitar winner, Adam Harvey is one of Australia’s most popular and enduring country stars with a career spanning over two decades. Encapsulating half a million sales, gold and platinum albums, Adam’s new endeavour, Harvey’s Bar – The Backyard Sessions, debuted at number one on the ARIA Country Album Charts and remained in the top spot for an incredible seven weeks. Written and recorded in his bar at home, in a part of the world which Adam refers to as ‘The Peoples’ Republic of Bateau Bay’, Harvey was able to gather up friends and neighbours for an after hour's sing-a-long with a few beers and his trademark one liners. “Because I've written a few drinking songs in the past,” explains Harvey. “And I talk about how this happened in the bar, or we wrote this in the bar, I have a lot of people that come up to me and say God, I'd love to spend a night in that bar”. “I started to think why don't we try
and take a bit of that bar atmosphere and bring the bar to those people. “That was the whole idea of the album… now the fun begins, I get to take this show on tour”. When the show hits the road, audiences are in for a treat. Harvey will be bringing with him a huge backdrop and a living breathing replica of his own bar that will be re-built on stage. “I think that a lot of artists are frightened to allow their audience or listeners into their own personal life,” he explains. “That has never been something that's worried me. Country music fans are like one big family and with this album and tour I want to try and let them inside my home, with my family and friends. “The idea behind this show is to invite the audience into that personal space, so they can get a feel for a night with me, in my bar at home.” See Adam Harvey live for one show only in Mareeba on Saturday, July 2, at the Mareeba RSL. Show starts at 8pm and tickets are on sale now. Phone the RSL on 4092 1396 or call into your club at 88 Byrnes Street, Mareeba. Tickets are $30 for adults and kids 14 and under are $15 each.

The LAND Extension to loans scheme for drought hit farmers
Drought-affected farmers across Queensland now have until October 31 to apply for loans of up to $1 million. Minister for Agriculture Leanne Donaldson last week announced an extension of the Drought and Drought Recovery Concessional Loans Schemes funded by the Australian Government and administered by the Queensland Rural Adjustment Authority (QRAA). Given the high demand for loans, Queensland has also been offered a further $15 million to ensure drought affected farm businesses can access much needed finance to support them recover and return to viability in the longer term. Welcoming the decision to extend the deadline and provide Queensland with top-up funding, Mr Donaldson said the drought specific loans schemes had assisted 42 farm business since October 2015. “Those businesses have received loans totalling more than $31 million so far,” she said. “This extension will provide the opportunity for even more farmers to submit an application. The Drought Concessional Loans Scheme provides loans up to $ 1 million, with concessional interest rates currently at 3.05 per cent. They assist farm businesses survive through drought, recover when the drought breaks, prepare for future droughts and have an interest-only

They assist farm businesses that have been financially impacted by the drought with debt restructuring, operating expenses or drought recovery activities, and are available for 10 years with interest-only repayments available for the first five year. Ms Donaldson said the variable concessional rate for a Drought Recovery Concessional Loan would reduce to 2.66 per cent from August 1, and encouraged farmers to contact QRAA for further information. “I strongly encourage any farmer thinking about applying for a Drought or Drought Recovery Concessional Loan to get a copy of the Guidelines and talk to the experts at QRAA,” she said. “They are there to help and can even visit you on-farm to talk through the application process.” Full details including all scheme guidelines and application are available at www.qraa.qld.gov.au, or contact QRAA on Freecall 1800 623 946. Johne’s disease management in Queensland Agriculture and Fisheries Minister Leanne Donaldson hasannounced a new approach to Johne’s disease management in Queensland. “As of July 1, the Queensland Government will no longer regulate livestock entry into Queensland or quarantine properties infected with Johne’s disease,” the Minister said. “The change is in step with the national review of Johne’s disease management and aligns Queensland with the approach in
other states and territories,” she said. “It also responds to continued calls from Queensland producers for more flexibility. “We are adopting a market-driven, industry-managed and riskbased approach, giving power to producers to make on-farm biosecurity decisions.” Ms Donaldson said the Palaszczuk Government was committed to grow Queensland’s prosperous livestock industries. “To do that we need to adapt to changing market conditions,” she said. “It is a sensible, prudent change to help our MAREEBA LIVEWEIGHT CATTLE producers and has broad industry support because it will provide greater flexibility for producers looking to expand their businesses. “Queensland will continue to maintain a low prevalence of Johne’s disease through this Prime Quotes (c/kg) toP LoW new risk-based approach.” Butcher’s steers 286.2 260.2 Queensland’s Chief Veterinary Officer Al245.2 218.2 Butcher’s heifers lison Crook said most producers will not have to change the way they manage Johne’s disease WhOLesALe cOWs 199.2 140.0

Speedway titles set to rev up

ACTION: The NQ Junior Sedan Titles are on at Kerribee Park Speedway this weekend.
JUNIOR speedway drivers from across the country are set to put pedal to the metal in this year’s NQ Junior Sedan Titles. Up to 30 young drivers from across the country will compete in the event, held at Mareeba’s Kerribee Park Speedway for the first time this Sunday. Mareeba Motor Racing Club president Ian Wallace said there would be no shortage of thrills and spills for spectators. “It’ll be the biggest junior event we’ve ever had in Mareeba,” he said. “It’ll be pretty exciting. These kids race all around Australia.”
PHOTO PETER ROY.
Drivers between the ages of 10 to 17 will go bumper to bumper at the titles, with the dirt go kart championships also being held on the same day. “We want to try to make an annual event where we can have either a big title or a round series between Cairns and Mareeba,” Mr Wallace said. “If we get this race under our belt, we will try and host the Australian title somewhere down the track.” Mr Wallace said together with the drivers and their families, as many as 1000 people could stay in town this weekend for the race. The titles will be held from 9.30am to 3pm at Kerribee Park Speedway this Sunday.
Thrilling contests in basketball finals Serial Killers clinched the A Grade Ladies Championship title following a comfortable 46-29 victory over Divas in the Mareeba Basketball Association grand final. The opening quarter was evenly balanced, with the scores locked together at nine-all. However, Killers took command of the championship decider from then onwards and were never challenged by Divas for the remainder of the encounter. Christine Leet was outstanding for Serial Killers and her 25 points proved a huge hurdle for Divas to overcome. Marylou Kulka together with Tracey Leet rendered good support. Playing well for Divas were Fallon Patolo and Natalie Della Bosca. MAMMAS were never troubled in their convincing 25-9 win over Miakats, to achieve top honours in the B Grade Ladies Competition. Michelle Bombardieri and Stephanie Keogh played particularly well for the winners. Miakats’ effort was solid, but numerous scoring attempts were way off target. Regardless, Anna Newlands
Pistol comp opens with a bang

DIMBULAH’S annual pistol competition has been hailed a shooting success. Held last month, Mareeba mayor Tom Gilmore opened competition proceedings with a literal bang by firing a replica artillery canon at Dimbulah Sports and Pistol Club. 20 pistol shooters registered to attend the event, ranging from beginners to seasoned experts. They joined with local club members to compete in standard pistol, centrefire, sports pistol, rapid fire, 50mm pistol, air pistol, and 25mm Black Powder categories. Competitors thoroughly enjoyed camping on the shooting range, battling through a wet Saturday night before finishing up the following day. The club has been active in the community for more than 20 years and offers members the chance to learn and develop their skills in the sport of pistol shooting. and Noelene Lep both stood out. An outstanding Under-18 junior grand final saw the Orange Tops claim the Winter Season Title, with a 53-45 defeat of Pumas. It was a fine display of basketball by a number of players on both sides. In particular, Jeremy McKay, Luke Fresta and Caleb Connolly for the winners. Equally impressive, although on a losing side were Jake Priestly, Toby Kerwell and Declan Ebner. Orange Tops took their good season form into the grades 7,8,9 junior grand final, defeating the Pink Side 35-35. Certainly, Pink had their opportunities, but Tops always appeared to have a slight edge. Joshua Cagat and Reef James stood out for Orange Tops, while playing well for the Pink Side were Zac Myrteza and Zac Cole. Blue Tops proved too solid for the Orange Side in the young primary school final with a 20-7 victory. Zavier Richardson top scoring for Blue Tops with 10 points, while Sam Jackson scored 4 points for the losing side.

Roosters retain cup in local derby Roosters forward Jake Dawe claimed by the Mareeba defence on Saturday night in Mareeba.
Bulls cup hopes washed out
THE Mareeba Bulls hopes of defending their FNQ Cup title have been dashed after suffering a 4-1 demolition at the hands of Stratford last week. Playing on a rainy Tuesday night at Endeavour Park, the Dolphins exacted some form of revenge after a 5-1 loss to the Bulls the weekend before in the FNQ Premier League. Both sides had only played 72 hours before, and the Bulls were worse for wear, being forced into several changes for the starting 11. Striker Steven Cater succumbed to a quad strain and Wayne Srhoj also pulled up sore and started from the bench. After a bright start where the Bulls scored in the 16th minute, captain Alex Plowman was forced off, further adding to Mareeba’s injury woes. With yet another squad reshuffle, the reigning premiers looked lost at times and the Dolphins took advantage, Connell Breton some-

Finals are back on the agenda for the Atherton Roosters after they recorded an important win at Davis Park in Mareeba on Saturday night. Playing the local derby with the Gladiators, the Roosters dominated the clash to run out 36-14 winners, after setting up a 22-4 lead at the break. For the Roosters it was a great way to get back in the winner’s circle and claim the Tableland Cup for the second year running. While not winning a game since April 29, Roosters Coach Dean Howard said the team played well across the park. “It was good to bounce back,” he said. “The enthusiasm was great and our fitness was the biggest key for us.” Winger Sylvester Pabai’s 90 metre try scoring effort eight minutes into the contest got the Roosters started and they were soon making easy yards through the Gladiators defence. Youngsters Jacob Rivett, Jake Willis and Ned Blackman were in everything helping the Roosters load several raids on the Gladiators. The Roosters win keeps them in the top five on the points ladder which is headed by Innisfail 24, Ivanhoes 18, Brothers 17, Mossman 14, Atherton 13, Tully 10, Edmonton 10, Yarrabah 9, Suburbs 9, Kangaroos 8 and Mareeba 8. Results of other first grade games played over the weekend – Ivanhoes vs Brothers 52-6, Innisfail vs Tully 22-18, Mossman vs Yarrabah 30-22 and Suburbs vs Kangaroos 24-16. In Saturday’s reserve grade match at Mareeba, the Roosters and the Gladiators played a 16 all draw, while the Roosters took the under 18 points over Mareeba 24-20. Cairns District Rugby League premiership action returns to Roosters Stadium this Saturday with the Roosters hosting Edmonton Storm in three grades from 4pm. The Gladiators travel to Mossman this Saturday in their round 13 clash.
how lobbing Bulls keeper Dima Syntek from a tight angle to make it 1-1 at the break. It was clear in the second half the Dolphins were hungry for a win. Cameron Morrison scored a contentious goal in the the 62nd minute from what appeared to be an offside position before Stratford then extended their lead 3-1 on the 69th minute courtesy of Danny Scapens-Feloy. With nothing to lose for the Bulls, Dennis Allen was replaced with 16-year-old James Elmes, Wayne Srhoj came into the match, and young Ben Dickinson, 15, also took to the field. The changes seemed to have an impact with the Bulls regaining some of their composure. But the Dolphins were not finished and made it 4-1 when Richard Neville scored from a long range lob, Syntek unable to the save it after being caught in the mud on the goal line. The Bulls, however, finished with a flurry

as Stratford custodian Angelo Serafin was made to work towards the end. Wayne Srhoj and Ben Stabile attempted long range efforts causing Serafin to pull some strong saves. Elmes missed his chance to open his account for the Bulls, blazing over an empty net close to the 90th minute. Though disappointed with the loss, Mareeba coach Alex Srhoj said his side would enjoy a deserved rest. “It was always going to be tough, but it was an opportunity for the reserve guys and the youngster to have a go,” he said. “Stratford wanted it more than us across the game tonight, we were OK in patches, some patches we weren’t. “All credit to Stratty, they played well.” The Bulls had a bye last weekend and will face Innisfail this Saturday in the FNQ Premier League at home with games from 1pm.
