OAM awarded to tireless Tito

ONE of Mareeba’s most wellrespected community members was recognised for his service to the region recently as he was named a Far North Queensland recipient of the Order of Australia Medal.

Tito Sciani, 91, has had an extensive involvement in a number of charitable organisations in the Mareeba community, of which include being a member of Mareeba Rotary, St Vincent De Paul and the Catholic Church.

“Mareeba is such a wonderful community and one that loves to give back,” he said.

“I met many great friends in my time with those organisations and it is a time in my life I look back fondly on.”

Mr Sciani said winning an Order of Australia Medal is something he wasn’t expecting.

“It was just something out of the blue, but it is a great honour” he said.

“With regards to my service in the community, I am just a person who can’t say no, and I always loved to give a hand whenever it was needed.

“To the person who nominated me, thank you very much – it means a lot.”

Although he is one of the town’s most loved characters who now calls Mareeba home, you have to travel more than 14,000 kilometres to the town of Poggiridenti, Italy to completely understand Mr Sciani’s life story – and it is one certainly worth telling.

For most 12 year olds, that is the age in which they begin their high schooling years, not a cabinet making and joinery apprenticeship.

However that was the case for Mr Sciani, who began his apprenticeship in Italy in 1939 under the Mussolini regime, just two weeks prior to the start of WWII. “Mussolini was very tough but fair,” Mr Sciani said.

“I was on 100 lira a month (Italian currency) and it would

cost me 60 lira a month just for train fares,” he laughed.

“But it was there I learned to work hard and to appreciate what you have.”

After more than 11 years applying his trade in Poggiridenti, in 1950 Mr Sciani embarked on a gruelling four week ferry from his home country to work on his uncle’s farm in Gordonvale, Queensland.

After nearly five years of farm work in Gordonvale and across the Tablelands, Mr Sciani decided to return to his trade, establishing his own carpentry business on the Tablelands in 1955.

“Business was going great and we were getting a lot of carpentry work, particularly on farms,” he said.

“At one point I had 17 employees, however it got to a point

where it just became too much.”

The rest of Mr Sciani’s working life prior to retirement was spent as the owner and operator of the Jackaroo Motel in Mareeba from 1972 to 1994, before passing the business down to his son Henry.

Mr Sciani said he has lived a wonderful and exciting life.

It’s quite amazing how everything turned out,” he laughed.

“Mareeba has been such a great place for me and my family and I have had a great time here.

“Now, all I can say is, ‘Thank God I am still here and in good health’.”

Mr Sciani’s Order of Australia Medal is not only a testament to the kind of man he is, it also acts as a great reminder of the crucial role the migrant community has played in helping shape Mareeba.

Compost model impresses Ag Minister THE agricultural trade plays an integral role in the stability of the Tablelands’ economy, and the industry received a boost as the Minister for Agriculture and Water Resources David Littleproud visited the region to announce $750,000 in funding last week.

The funding was granted to Regional Development Australia Far North Queensland and Torres Strait Inc and Central Queensland University to undertake research and ensure the feasibility of using green waste compost in agriculture and determine

whether it can be implemented on a broad scale.

The independent analysis will be done using the data obtained from the Inderbitzin Shark Recyclers farm model, in the hope of replicating it along the east coast of Queensland.

The Inderbitzin’s Shark Recyclers compost model has been in operation for a decade, and since its inception has made considerable savings on water, money and has achieved better yields.

Added to that, the model has significantly reduced the usage

of chemical fertilisers and improved crop quality and plant health.

Mr Littleproud said the Inderbitzin Shark Recyclers model was brought to his attention on his last visit to the region six months ago.

“I was notified of the Inderbitzin farm model through RDA Chair David Kempton,” he said.

“It appeared to be a great initiative and frankly common sense, so we asked them to do a submission up and did our due process from there.”

“We are using tax payer’s money so we had to ensure we investigated the veracity of the data to determine whether this model deserved a pilot.”

Mr Littleproud said the runoff, water efficiency and reduction in the use of chemical fertiliser were some of the major reasons why the model received Federal Government support.

“The original data is showing that they’re getting better yields for their crop which is a good sign,” he said.

“We’re confident that if we

Mr Littleproud said he hopes to commit to the roll out within the next 12 months.

“Peter Inderbitzin pioneered this practice therefore we have something successful to go off – so it’s not like we’re starting from scratch,” he said.

“His model is a great example of the benefits of green waste compost in agriculture and I look forward to seeing the findings of the research.”

WITH recent news surfacing of a petition having been established by Kuranda resident Jax Bergersen for the Mareeba Shire to return to a divisional council model, Mareeba Shire Council have provided figures highlighting the funding Kuranda has received since de-amalgamation in 2012-13.

The Mareeba Shire Council has spent $20,651,932 on capital expenditure since de-amalgama-

tion, of which does not include everyday operational costs.

Some of Mareeba Shire Council’s most notable investments in the Kuranda community over the past seven years include more than $1 million for the second reservoir on Myola Road, $696,000 for improvements to the Kuranda Information Centre, and a further $990,000 for the Grove Creek Bridge Renewal.

“While we are aware a peti-

tion is being circulated, Council has not considered the matter of divisions and will await the petition being presented to Council - which we understand will be at the next Council meeting,” a Council spokesman said.

The next Mareeba Shire Council meeting is scheduled to be held on Wednesday, February 20 at 9am at the Mareeba Shire Council building.

KUR-World receives support from local Indigenous groups THE multi-million KUR-World development has found some unlikely support from a local Aboriginal group despite the thousands of objections to the eco-resort’s Environmental Impact Statement (EIS).

The Muliridgi people, whose tribal boundary adjoins KURWorld, has been in discussions with the resort’s General Manager Mark Lawson for more than a year about the impact the development will have on the Aboriginal people in the area.

Muliridgi spokesman Duncan McInnes said his people were attracted to the jobs and training which will be offered to local applicants.

“There are almost no jobs in

the Kuranda and Mareeba areas so we have welcomed the resort and its university which will spare students from travelling to Cairns,” he said.

“We will also have the opportunity to manufacture artefacts for sale to tourists at the resort.”

A major talking point of the development has been the effect the influx of tourists as a result of KUR-World will have on the already congested Kuranda Range Road; however that is a problem that needs to be rectified by the State Government according to Mr McInnes.

“The State Government has the responsibility for upgrading the range and the resort should force them into action,” he said.

“The government has been stalling for years and the road should have been upgraded to accommodate the extra people who have moved into the new housing estates in Mareeba over the past five years.”

KUR-World Project Director Mark Lawson said they have been working with multiple Aboriginal groups in the area.

“We have been in discussions with them about the economic opportunities that are possible with the KUR-World development,” he said.

“Their involvement is something we are looking to continue.”

Joy for locals as Dam exceeds 100% capacity

Tinaroo Dam was a glorious sight on Monday morning after going over for the first time in seven years.

TINAROO Dam became one of a number of dams across North Queensland to have gone over in recent weeks as it exceeded 100% capacity at approximately 10:30am on Sunday.

The dam hasn’t reached 100% since March of 2012, and there appears to be a strong sense of optimism from residents,

farmers and business owners that it will bring a considerable economic boost to the region.

One such business that is expecting to reap the benefits of the significant dam levels is Lake Tinaroo Holiday Park.

“To say we’re excited is an understatement,” Lake Tinaroo Holiday Park Manager Leah

O’Connor said.

“We’ve had a couple of lean years recently so hopefully the dam levels will mean for an uptick in business.

“There are so many boats out the front here which is a great sign, and this team wasn’t here when the dam last went over in 2012, so it’s a welcome change

and it’s added a lot of buzz to the area.”

The positive sentiment expressed by Ms O’Connor about the dam’s water levels was shared by that of Queensland’s leading commercial water supplier SunWater.

“We are pleased to see further inflows into Tinaroo Falls Dam,” a SunWater spokesperson said.

“This is extremely good news for our customers, particularly irrigators who will benefit from increased water availability.”

The spokesperson said that although water levels continue to rise, it is difficult to say how long the dam will continue to spill.

“There are a number of factors that contribute to water levels receding, which include; the volume of inflows into the dam, customer demand for water, evaporation and water releases required for downstream environmental obligations,” they said.

“Therefore, it is extremely difficult to predict future water levels.”

The fish barrier net was installed at Tinaroo Dam last week.

AS the Tinaroo Dam’s capacity quickly pushed towards 100%, the Tableland Fish Stock Society deployed their fish barrier net last Wednesday between Barrabadeen Point and the headland at the Tinaroo Township.

The purpose of the net is to protect the sooty grunter and barramundi currently residing in the Tinaroo Dam – as the fish stocked in the dam will naturally attempt to follow the flowing water over the spillway.

Tablelands Fish Stock Society Secretary Ann Leighton said the

net was provided by the Queensland Government and Department of Primary Industries after a flood event in 1991 caused a major loss of 50% of the stocked barramundi.

“The net was first deployed in 1997 and was commissioned by the Hon. Tom Gilmore MP on April 9, 1997,” she said.

“It has been deployed and recovered approximately eight times since then, the last of which being in March, 2012.”

drops and is unlikely to overflow.

“At this stage the net is likely to be in place for three to four months,” she said.

“We will wait until the wet season is over and will make a decision to remove it once the imminent threat of the dam going over is no longer a concern.”

Mrs Leighton said the net was installed courtesy of Uninet Cairns.

“Uninet Cairns have the necessary specialised equipment to install and recover the net for the Tableland Fish Stocking Soci-

ety,” she said. “The net is a very sizeable one – it is 750m long and reaches a depth of between 35-40 metres, and is 800m upstream of the spillway.”

Mrs Leighton asked that the general public, fishing and boating fraternity keep a 30m buffer from the net, while adhering to the six-knot speed limit within the buffer.

“If you must cross, look for the signed crossing areas on the northern and southern ends of the net as keels can damage the ropes,” she said.

Biggest mango goes to Kiara THE KP Mango Competition has come to a close for yet another year and there certainly wasn’t a shortage of big mangoes provided by farmers in the region.

The 2018/19 competition saw 17 nominations placed, with all but one recording weights heavier than a kilogram.

Despite the number of im-

pressive nominations, there were only three that could receive the cash prizes that were part of the competition.

First place belongs to Kiara Cabassi, whose whopping nomination of 1.878kg just beat that of Liam and Sienna’s 1.846kg mango – while third place goes to Gemma Westwood whose mango weighed in at 1.616kg.

Kiara Cabassi’s win means she will receive the first place prize of $500, while second and third place will receive $300 and $200 respectively.

The annual competition is run each year in conjunction with The Express and FNQ Growers and is sponsored by Lindsay Transport and Lindsay Rural.

Expressions of interest for the for Division 3 Councillor position closed at 5pm on Friday.

Tablelands Regional Council Mayor Joe Paronella said they’ve received 14 expressions of interest for the vacancy.

Federal funding to bolster biosecurity BIOSECURITY has been a key issue of the Coalition Government in recent years, and its level of importance was further highlighted as the Minister for Agriculture and Water Resources David Littleproud announced $1.7 million in funding for the Torres Strait Regional Authority during his visit to FNQ last week.

The funding is a part of the Federal Government’s $315 million commitment made in May to build a smarter and stronger biosecurity system to further protect Australia's farm industries and environment.

Mr Littleproud said this funding for the Torres Strait Regional Authority is about further educating and investing in indigenous rangers so they’re able to better identify biosecurity risks.

“First and foremost we need to engage with those who have the boots on the ground, particularly the First Australians, and equip them with the knowledge

of what pests they should be on the lookout for and how to identify them,” he said.

“Intrinsically they know that, they have a deep connection with their country and once they undertake the necessary education, we’re confident they’ll do a great job.”

“Added to that, we’ve also invested in telecommunications systems such as scanners and underwater drones to ensure greater efficiency and detection.”

Mr Littleproud said biosecurity is one of the biggest threats in Australia.

“We’re protecting a 60 billion dollar agriculture industry,” he said.

“If we’re not vigilant in investing in new and improved technology and those on the ground, we pose a risk of having an incursion.

“The reality is, we’re probably the last country in the world that takes biosecurity seriously,

and it has given us a clean-green image as a result.

“That has meant for better commodity prices for farmers, and we want to make sure we protect those.”

Mr Littleproud noted the wonderful agricultural development happening in northern Queensland, and appears confident that the region will play an integral role in adding to the industry’s economic prosperity.

“We think we can take agriculture from a $60 billion industry and improve it to a $100 billion industry, and we believe this part of the country will be a big reason behind it,” he said.

“You’re sitting on a goldmine up here, and we think the potential for northern Australia is significant.

“At the end of the day, improving biosecurity measures and the prosperity of the agricultural industry go hand in hand.”

Tech savvy seniors survey Tablelands Regional Council has received a grant to run free computer classes for seniors.

“To kick off the Tech Savvy Seniors program we’re conducting a survey to identify the knowledge gaps our seniors would like to fill,” said Mayor

Joe Paronella.

“We want to make sure we teach the right topics.

“You can get a copy of the survey from our libraries and some community organisations, or fill it out online. “The survey is open until 22 February.

Albina’s voice centre stage

EVERY singer’s dream is to grace the stage in the City That Never Sleeps, and Chewko’s own Albina Niceforo realised that dream this week as she performed at the Carnegie Hall on Saturday in New York City.

Albina’s trip to the Big Apple was part of the 2018/19 Forte International Music Competition, where she made it to the final round of the competition after successfully proceeding through the preliminary and semi-final rounds last year via video submissions.

Albina’s selection to perform at the Forte International Music Competition caps off a sensational 12 months for the 12 year old, whose recent achievements include winning the Innisfail Young Performers Competition, the Beavon Family Award, PakMag Magazine Cairns Talent Quest and the Redlands Sporting Club Vocal Competition – all of

which came in 2018.

Added to that, Albina was named the Evolution Dance Competition’s National Final winner of the Vocal Solo 10-11 years section, beating out some of the best performers for her age from across Australia and New Zealand on her way to the award.

Albina said she is really surprised to have made the finals in New York City.

“I am so excited to meet young people who enjoy classical music as much as I do,” she said.

“I believe I will gain valuable advice on how I can enhance my performances by performing at Carnegie Hall, and this concert will give me the opportunity to see how a professional theatre is run and to get constructive feedback from industry professionals.”

Albina’s musical talent appears to come naturally to her;

however it’s anything but as she noted that it is something she works tirelessly on.

“I do work hard at my craft, and part of my study is watching classical singers’ performances,” she said.

“It is a bit like watching your opponent’s videos in sports, you try and get the best of each performer you watch and then try to create your own character on stage.”

“I believe singing well is only part of the performance, as stagecraft and song selection are also extremely important.”

Albina took time to thank those who have played an pivotal role in her continued success.

“I need to especially thank my mum and dad who have helped me so much,” she said.

“Without them I am not able to have the spectacular costumes or travel to national or even international festivals and compe-

Albina said she has aspirations to continue her Classical training for the Voice, Piano and Guitar disciplines, with dreams to be a classically trained singer and have the opportunity to perform in the Sydney Opera House as well as overseas.

Albina’s mum Carmelina said she is very proud of the humble, sweet girl Albina is.

“I think Albina’s success stems from her wonderful nature and attitude,” she said.

“I enjoy watching Albina’s love of classical music grow.”

Albina’s young yet successful singing career continues to put Mareeba on the performing arts map, and to have the long list of accomplishments she has at just 12 years of age, the sky is the limit for the local product.

New device to help save lives

ATHERTON Hospital staff and patients had a heart-stopping moment recently, when a new cardiac testing device arrived, courtesy of the Far North Queensland Hospital Foundation.

Hospital Emergency Department acting nurse unit manager Karina Walther said the $7600 blood pressure monitor would be used regularly on patients with suspected cardiac problems.

“Nurses take blood pressure on a patient while they are walking/running on a treadmill, continuously holding onto the treadmill,” Ms Walther said.

“This makes it very difficult to hear, as there is a lot of exter-

nal noises. The doctor or nurse then needs to focus attention on the machine to input the blood pressure results. Through this new machine, we are now able to focus on the patient the whole time, as this machine automatically takes the blood pressure through a microphone inserted in the blood pressure cuff. This documents the data into the test itself, leaving the nurse and doctor to focus on the patient,” she said.

“This little device will bring much relief to our nurses who strive to provide the best care of our community.”

said it was important to support equipment requests from outlying hospitals such as Atherton.

“The funds for this equipment actually came about through the profits from our commercial operations, and it is really wonderful to hear how purchases like this can make a real difference to patient outcomes,” Mr Franz said.

“Equipment like this doesn’t cost a lot of money, but if it makes the job of caring for patients better and easier, then it’s a great outcome for everyone,” he said.

Neighbourhood Watch launches new monthly photo competition

Tablelands Patrol Group Senior Constable Aleda Day is encouraging locals in the Northern Tablelands Neighbourhood Watch area to like the facebook page and enter the monthly photo competition.

THE Northern Tablelands Neighbourhood Watch (NTNHW) is calling on members of the community to get involved with a photo competition that is starting this week.

The competition will be held monthly and will contain a theme which will be named on the Neighbourhood Watch Facebook page.

The photos will be uploaded to the Facebook page and the photo with the most likes will determine the winner.

The winner of each month’s

competition will receive a $50 gift voucher from any local business in Mareeba (excluding alcohol and tobacco).

Mareeba Police’s Senior Constable Aleda Day said it’s a great community initiative which at the same time helps NHW gain greater exposure.

“We hope this will act as a fun activity for the community and encourage more people to visit our Facebook page,” she said.

The present location of our Library in Byrnes Street has served our community well for many years and the idea of a new facility to expand the range of literature available to the community is to be commended but to move such a vital public facility some kilometres from the centre of Mareeba across the Barron River to Anzac Avenue surely must be questioned as this will disadvantage over two thirds of

the population of Mareeba for a whole range of reasons.

Mareeba Chamber of Commerce have been very silent on this development proposal by Mareeba Shire Council but it is now time for the Chamber & Mareeba Shire Council to call a public meeting and let the residents of Mareeba have their say on the future location of our Public Library before any further advancement of the State Government Grant – not real sure why this was not one of the first

actions in such a huge shift of a vital public asset.

No doubt Mareeba Shire Council would have received some feedback on the proposal via their internal web page and those statistics alone would be very interesting but the majority of residents in Mareeba would no doubt like to have a say in the relocation of the Library but have not been given this opportunity via an open public forum.

Cost of youth education continues to rise in QLD

THE cost of education is a hot-button issue amongst families in this country, and new statistics released courtesy of the Australia Scholarships Group (ASG) suggest it will remain a pertinent talking point as there are some staggering figures in the report, particularly in regional Queensland.

The 2019 ASG Planning for Education Index identified and compared the total cost of Government, Catholic and Independent education across each state and territory in Australia, and found that regional Queensland is the most expensive state for a Catholic education (report excludes metropolitan cities).

Catholic education in regional Queensland is three per cent above the national average when compared to that of other regional areas in the states and territories throughout Australia.

The average cost of a Catholic education in regional Queensland is $113,211 over a 13 year period, whilst the national average is $109,877.

Added to that, Government education in regional Queensland is $65,410 over the same period, which is 12.8 per cent above the national average and only second to regional New South Wales ($73,808) for the most expensive in Australia.

ficer Ross Higgins said irrespective of Australia’s high or low inflationary environment, the cost of education has risen at more than double the rate of inflation.

“Education costs, including tuition costs, uniforms, transport and devices are demanding a far greater share of the family budget than in the past,” he said.

“More than ever, the costs associated with education are placing more of a burden on Australian families, who are already challenged by the rising cost of living.

“With less discretionary money to spend, it’s going to be very hard to pay for education...”

Mr Higgins said ASG have been doing this survey for the past 11 years; however this year’s model was different to year’s past.

“We surveryed 2300 people, and found families often weren’t countering in education costs when they weighed up their household budget,” he said.

“They’ll factor in things like their mortgage and car repayments, yet don’t think about how much the cost of education is impacting them financially.”

NBN in Mareeba to go live this month ARE YOU NBN READY: Telstra team members Olivier Vergari, Pier Portella, Enver Selita and Jordan Morris were in Mareeba last week assisting locals with all things NBN related.

MEMBERS of the Telstra Business Centre Cairns were in Mareeba last week to provide residents and businesspeople with more of an understanding of the National Broadband Network rollout which is set to be completed later this month.

It was also an opportunity for residents to sign up prior to it going live on February 22.

Mareeba’s plans to implement NBN has been in the pipeline for more than two years, and residents have had to watch on as surrounding towns and cities such as Atherton and Cairns have reaped the benefits of a new and improved comprehensive inter-

net model.

Telstra Business Centre Cairns’ General Manager Enver Selita said the purpose of the visit was to help educate and transition business people in Mareeba over to the NBN. “We are also offering free health checks on our customers’ Telstra accounts to ensure they are getting the most value out of their Telstra services,” he said.

Mr Selita said the response form the Mareeba community has been great.

“I think they really appreciate having someone local that can help with their NBN journey that at times can be challenging

to understand,” he said.

Mr Selita said NBN currently have Mareeba going live on February 22, with the connection timeline depending on the solution.

Marshall to hit the stage at the ORB

MUSIC enthusiasts will have the chance to see one of Britain’s most well-respected blues artists as Bex Marshall will be touring the Tablelands this weekend.

Marshall, who is returning to perform in Australia for the first time since 2010, boasts an impressive resume which most notably includes winning the Best British Blues Vocalist poll at the UK Blues Awards and being a four-time nominee at the European Blues Awards.

Marshall is known for having a unique style which consists of a combined technique of slide,

Marshall said she has been waiting for eight years to come back to Australia.

THERE were strong numbers on hand at the Mareeba Leagues Club on Saturday as the Mareeba Gladiators held their junior signon day.

Mareeba Gladiators Junior President Darrin Hastie said he was ecstatic with the turn out.

“There were great numbers as usual, and it’s pleasing to see so many young kids excited to play rugby league in this region,” he said.

The Gladiators’ junior sign-on day also saw the Northern Pride

U18s and U20s squads make the trip up the range to take part in a training session, all while giving the youngsters a chance to meet some of their players.

“It was really good to have the Northern Pride boys up here,” Hastie said.

“The young blokes really look up to them and that’s the level they aspire to get to one day, so it’s great for the game here in Mareeba.”

Hastie also took time to thank those who have put their hand up

to help this season.

“I’d like to thank all our past and present volunteers, they do an enormous amount of work and we couldn’t run the club without them,” he said.

“I would also like to thank the Leagues Club, they allow us to use their facilities for a variety of things and we’re really appreciative of that as a club.”

Hastie said if anyone wants to get involved with the juniors in the form of volunteering, everyone is welcome.

Academy to foster rugby league talent RUGBY league continues to go from strength to strength in Atherton, and the sport is set to receive a further face-lift with the arrival of a promising up-andcoming coach from South-East Queensland.

Sam Harreman, 26, has come to the region to teach at Atherton State High to go along with his role in developing a rugby league academy at the school.

Harreman’s coaching resume is an impressive one, most notably of which includes his role as the Coordinator of the Gold Coast Titans Junior Rugby League, coaching in the South Coast school system and as coach of Beenleigh State High School’s First XIII side.

Harreman said the purpose of the Atherton State High Rugby League Academy is to further develop rugby league in the region and provide the highest quality talent with career pathways in the sport.

“Atherton is a thriving rugby league town, and I aim to help further push the game so that there are systems in place comparable to those in South-East Queensland and New South Wales,” he said.

“With the Northern Pride up here also, it’s a great opportunity to strengthen the link between Atherton and the semi-professional organisation, which will expose talented rugby league

players in this region to a highly competitive setting.”

Harreman noted that although helping the youth recognise their rugby league dream is an integral part of the academy, helping them as people is just as important.

“A crucial aspect about the academy is to ensure we promote being good humans before anything else, by helping instil in them accountability, responsibility and respect which will not only better them in rugby league, but also in life,” he said.

“And I firmly believe there are the personnel and structures in place here to achieve that.

“I’ve been extremely impressed with the foundations that have been laid up here - there’s an unbelievable passion and commitment to the game from those in the community that has made me really excited about what the future holds for rugby league in Atherton.”

Harreman will also be taking on the Atherton Roosters’ U18’s head coaching role, a challenge he said he is really looking forward to.

“There will be a good crosssection of players who will have the opportunity to hone their skills and knowledge of the game between their time with the academy and with the Roosters,” he said. “I can’t wait to play my part in helping foster that next generation of talent through.”

IT’S TIME TO REGISTER: Nominations are now open for the 2019 Great Wheelbarrow Race which will run from Mareeba to Chillagoe over three days in May.

Make this year the year you challenge yourself and join in the excitement of the Great Wheelbarrow Race (GWR).

With nominations now open for the 2019 Great Wheelbarrow Race, participants can form teams, pairs, trios or do it solo as they walk or run with a wheelbarrow over three action packed days.

Now in its 16th year, the Great Wheelbarrow Race will return to its original format this

year with competitors running from Mareeba to Chillagoe in May. The event remains a three day fun-filled endurance event, taking in the rugged picturesque landscape of our region. Competitors will start the 144km journey in Mareeba on Friday morning with a parade down Byrnes Street and arrive in Chillagoe on Sunday afternoon.

GWR committee chair Nipper Brown said he was looking

forward to the event and hopes that with online registrations available, those taking part will get their nominations in early.

“The online registrations were introduced last year making it much easier and quicker for teams to register,” said Mr Brown.

The 2019 Great Wheelbarrow race will be held on May 17-19.
