71 years of wedded bliss MARRIAGE is a strong bond forged between two soulmates who would do anything for each other, and there aren’t too many relationships that embody that quite like that of husband and wife Edward “Ted” (92) and Melva Grebert (93).

Ted and Melva celebrated their 71st wedding anniversary on Sunday at the Mareeba Leagues Club with their daughter and son-in-law.

Ted was born in Atherton to parents who were pioneers of Millaa Millaa, where he lived on a dairy farm in the early years of his life.

Ted had a very diverse professional career, working on

the railway in Mareeba during the war before joining the Air Force.

He has also worked as a police officer and in the carpentry business among others.

Melva was raised in Lake Cargelligo in the Central West region of New South Wales, and first met Ted on a trip to visit her brother in Parkes.

“He was my brother’s roommate in Parkes when they were both working on the railway,” she said.

“My brother happened to be working away and it was there I met this tall, fair-haired and nice looking man.”

Their romance blossomed

from there and they were engaged in January of 1948 and married on April 28 of the same year.

Ted and Melva spent the next 71 years mostly between the family farm in Millaa Millaa and Sawtell in New South Wales, where they raised their four children Sandra, Jennifer, Silvia and Ursula.

71 years of marriage is an extremely impressive achievement, and Ted spoke about why he feels theirs has stood the test of time.

“People always ask us how we managed to stay together for 71 years, and I say that we loved each other and were al-

ways good friends,” he said.

“We’ve had a few disagreements over the years like every marriage, but we always got through them.

“And she’s also the only woman to have knitted me a jumper,” he laughed.

Ted and Melva are currently enjoying their retirement in Mareeba’s Savannah Lifestyle Resorts, where they joined their daughter and son-in-law to live about eight months ago.

Ted and Melva’s daughter Sandra Wilson noted how happy her parents are since they made the move from New South Wales back to the Tablelands and to the Savannah Life-

style Resort specifically.

“Dad has always said he wanted to come back to the Tablelands but didn’t want to live in Millaa Millaa or Malanda because it was too wet,” Sandra said.

“We’ve been looking at Savannah since it started and my husband and I sold our house and moved here two years ago from Malanda, and mum and dad now also live here and they are happy as pigs in mud.”

Ted and Melva Grebert are yet another example of the true beauty of marriage.

Shorten pitches greater tourism WITH the Federal Election less than two weeks away, both Scott Morrison and Bill Shorten’s respective campaign trails are beginning to heat up.

Opposition leader Bill Shorten’s campaign took him to Far North Queensland last week, as he visited Cairns and rode the Skyway Rainforest Cableway over the Kuranda Range before announcing Labor’s funding commitments to the region in front of the large scrum of media who had gathered.

Mr Shorten’s pitch was an extensive one, of which included $100 million to local councils to allow them to grow regional airports, $95 million to upgrade tourist attractions, $30 million to increasing the range of tourism in individual regions and $25 million to Tourism Australia.

A portion of that funding would also specifically go towards strategies to attract new international flights to Cairns, which could in turn not only provide a significant boost to tourism in the city centre, but also on the Tablelands.

“We want to see a greater investment in the regions so that the great Australian story of the

regions can be shared around Australia and also with people all around the world,” Mr Shorten said.

Mareeba Chamber of Commerce President Joe Moro spoke about the positive impact greater tourism numbers could have on Mareeba.

“This would be good news for Cairns and the tablelands will get some benefit by having more visitors in Cairns,” he said.

“What is important for the Mareeba area is the self-drive tourist, so the sealing of Shanty Creek Road, the roads to both Emerald Creek Falls and Davies Creek, the road to Chillagoe and the Ootan Road are urgent requirements.

“Even for those tourists who hire a rental car to travel up to the tablelands, they will not venture on to dirt road in fear of breaching their rental contracts.”

Mr Moro also noted what can be done in Mareeba and the Tablelands to ensure our communities reap the benefits of an increase in tourist numbers.

THE Palaszczuk Labor Government has turned its back on farmers in Northern Queensland by dismissing their concerns around new regulation of land and waterways near the Great Barrier Reef.

Liberal National Candidate for Kennedy Frank Beveridge said locals had been ignored by Labor during consultation.

“What I’m hearing time and time again is state officials haven’t shown any real interest in the concerns of locals,” Mr Beveridge said.

“Consultations are meant to be about listening and taking action to protect the livelihoods of people in our communities.

“We all want a healthy reef but we can have a strong agricultural sector too. “It doesn’t have to be one or the other.”

Minister for Agriculture and Water Resources David Littleproud said the consultations show Labor doesn’t take the regions seriously.

“It’s not consultation if you’ve already made up your mind,” Minister Littleproud said. “Striking a balance between community and the reef might be hard – but that’s the state government’s job.

“Farmers want a healthy reef.

They’re the best environmental custodians we have and the state should take them seriously.

“The Liberal and Nationals Government knows we need to work in partnership with our farmers to protect the reef, which is why we have committed more than $1.2 billion for reef protection, including for water quality improvement. “Any government that gives up on giving farmers and locals a fair go is just lazy.

Tinaroo Barrier Net damaged

The Tinaroo fish barrier net was significantly damaged over the long weekend which would potentially have a detrimental effect on the fish numbers stocked in the dam.

“Who knows how many fish we’ve lost due to the damage,” she said.

“The barrier net has been temporarily fixed and will be removed in the next 3-4 weeks.

THE Tinaroo Dam fish barrier net that was put in place in February courtesy of the Tableland Fish Stocking Society and UniNet Cairns has been significantly damaged over the Easter weekend.

The net is in place to ensure that after a considerable wet season the Tinaroo does not lose a large portion of the barramundi fish which are stocked in the dam over the spillway.

Tablelands Fish Stock Society Secretary Ann Leighton said that it is disappointing to come back from a long weekend and find that a net that has been purchased and maintained by the support of our local community has been inconsiderately damaged.

Charity to benefit from Field Days

A NEW volunteer collaboration will be unveiled between the Rotary FNQ Field Days and the Cancer Council Queensland (CCQ) at this year’s three-day agricultural exhibition in May. Under the collaboration, volunteers from the CCQ will be ambassadors for the field days, handing out the event’s 48-page official event guide and free sunscreen, while staff will be available to talk about local services provided by the organisation.

Rotary FNQ Field Days chair Ida Portella said the collaboration was a win-win for both

organisations, and typified the groundswell of community support for the event.

“Every event, we have hundreds of volunteers come together to help deliver the exhibition and, in return, raise valuable funds for a charity of their choice,” Ms Portella said.

“We pay our volunteers a set fee which is donated to a charity of their choice.

“This year an opportunity arose to collaborate with the Cancer Council Queensland, one of the most well-known, independent community-based chari-

ties.

“I doubt there is anyone in the community who hasn’t been directly or indirectly touched by cancer.”

Cancer Council Queensland Events Coordinator (Far North Queensland) Emma Wilson said the organisation was excited to be partnering with the Rotary FNQ Field Days.

“It gives us an opportunity for our volunteers to support CCQ and raise awareness of our local services including the Marilyn Mayo Lodge in Cairns, on-site psychology counsellor and wig

and turban workshops,” Ms Wilson said.

Ms Portella said the event was still in need of volunteers.

“We still require volunteers for gates and carparking,” she said. “All of the other areas have been filled and we are grateful for all the organisations who have come forward to help out.

“Volunteering is a wonderful way of giving back to the community.”

Candle lighting ceremony for DV victims DOMESTIC violence is a plague that continues to be felt right across the country, and Tablelands residents will have the opportunity to show their opposition to it today as the Cairns

Regional Domestic Violence Service are hosting a candle lighting ceremony at the Atherton Cenotaph Park.

It acts as an invitation for attendees to remember those who

have died and the loved ones left behind as a result of domestic and family violence and ensure that in the future we as a community vow to “Vanish the Violence, Stand up and Speak Out!”.

Term 1 a roaring success at MSHS MAREEBA State High School continues to shine on the state and national stage with its students garnering a number of reputable accomplishments in the first term of the school year.

Some of the impressive achievements gained last term were Roeith Geraghty being awarded Runner Up in the Big Fish 2019 program, which is a creative entrepreneurship program that brings together 60 budding entrepreneurs, Gamuchirai Makoti winning the Zone Final in Malanda in the Lions Youth of the Year, and Joshua Theakston receiving the TJ Ryan Medal.

THE boil water notice for properties connected to the Millstream (North and South) water supply scheme has been cancelled. Water supplied to properties now

Farewell to Dimbulah Stalwart Glenda Fabris, Director of Nursing at the Dimbulah Primary Health Centre, has retired after a long and successful career with Queensland Health which began in 1978.

Glenda started at the old wooden Mareeba Hospital working for Matron Forrest, and then undertook a brief stint in the midwifery department at the Cairns Hospital before returning to Mareeba, where she worked until 1989.

She then chose to relocate to Dimbulah, which Glenda felt was a great place to raise her children.

"There was never a dull moment back then and the wildlife was very much a part of work-

ing life," she said, "We often had brown and grass snakes slithering down the corridor in the clinic as the screen doors would not close properly.

"Also, a few large roos would be hit by cars, jump over the clinic fence and die in the grounds. I would have to find a nice local to come and remove them before they smelt the clinic out."

"In the mango season, we would have a very noisy area where the mangoes trees were filled with drunken parrots."

"Another funny story is that we used to have young boys playing hooky from school and fishing in the local creek, then coming in with the red fishing lures piercing their eyebrows.”

she said.

“I had to ring the local automobile workshops and they would come down and cut the lures for me, whilst the young boys begged me not to tell their parents.”

Glenda went on to complete further training and worked in Tresillian child health and women's health before becoming the Director of Nursing at Dimbulah.

“Over the 30 years I have worked and lived in Dimbulah, I have met some lovely people and have made some beautiful lifelong friendships,” she said.

Glenda was thanked for her many years of service and farewelled with a morning tea.

Top 10 finish for Mareeba business

MAREEBA business Seafood King has taken out seventh place in the “Best Hot Chips in Far North Queensland” competition.

The business is owned by Kathy and Mathew Harriman, and their hot chips have become a big hit in town for locals and tourists alike at their fish and chip night on Friday’s at the Mareeba Rodeo Grounds.

A STRONG crowd was on hand at the Dimbulah Memorial Hall for the ANZAC Day Dawn Service last Thursday.

Mareeba Shire Councillor Nipper Brown emceed the event and noted how ecstatic he was with the community’s turn-out.

“I was really happy with numbers today, they were up again this year so which is pleasing to see,” he said.

“It’s all about the community coming together and commemorating the sacrifices those made before us.”

The day also consisted of a breakfast at the Dimbulah Bowls Club which took place after the Dawn Service.

ATHERTON Cricket’s senior players, supporters and Life Members gathered to wrap up the 2018-19 cricket season with a presentation dinner at the Atherton Hotel on Friday night.

After taking out four major awards at the Cricket Far North presentations, it was no surprise to see Dan Parnell collecting the silverware once again at Atherton Cricket’s night of nights.

Dan led the 1st Grade team to the CFN T20 final, and the 1-Day semi-final. Unfortunately the semi-final was washed out by cyclone Trevor bringing a disappointing end to the season. Second grade suffered a similar fate after a strong season, and were also denied the opportunity to play a semi-final by the weather.

Damien Cavanagh also featured in the Cricket Far North presentations with Bowling Average award in the 2nd Grade competi-

tion.

Gladiators go down in horror second half

A HORROR second half for the Mareeba Gladiators saw them beaten convincingly by defending premiers the Mossman Sharks on Saturday night.

It appeared The Gladiators had carried their strong form from the week prior as they were firing on all cylinders throughout most of the first half.

The Gladiators were first to score after Jayden Edwards yet again showed his size and strength to beat multiple defenders and score under the posts.

That try was then quickly followed by a slick backline play from the home side which was ultimately finished by winger Josh Adu-Dwanna.

A try to Ben Cocciolone with 15 left in the half had the Mossman Sharks scratching their heads as they couldn’t subdue the home side’s go-forward.

A much-needed try to Mossman fullback Matthew Gibuma and a penalty goal just on the stroke of halftime to Mareeba resulted in an 18-6 scoreline at the main break.

The second half was a far more one-sided affair, as Mossman Sharks played far more creative and expansive rugby league that had the Gladiators defensive line out on their feet.

Bulls battle continues THE Mareeba Bulls travelled to Trinity Beach, the home of the Marlin Coast Rangers on Saturday evening with disappointing results in both men’s senior divisions.

The Reserve grade went into the match with a patched up team as several players pushed up to premier division due to the long list of injuries and unavailable players.

The refereeing left a lot to be desired in this match as the Marlins were awarded a penalty in the first 10 minutes. The Bulls kept their composure and dominated the Marlins for long periods, but lacked the final touch in the third quarter of the field.

A power failure disrupted the match for half an hour as one of the Bulls players (Sandro Soncin) was tasked to shed some light on the situation.

The disruption came as the Bulls were getting the better of their opponents and before long found themselves 2 down against the run of play.

With time against them, the Bulls pushed forward only for

the Marlins to capitalise on a defensive error and give them a 3-0 lead.

Damian Wildman scored a consolation goal at the end as the bulls, which were undefeated until then, went home pondering what could have been.

The Premier match started at pace with both teams cancelling each other out with good defensive work as they both tried to get the upper hand.

Marlin Coast’s Jeffery Lassche curled in an unstoppable shot from distance to give his team the advantage and a one goal lead heading into the break.

It was not their night as the Bulls came into the second half and saw a goal scored directly from a corner, followed by another defensive error saw them go three goals down.

The introduction of Damian Wildman in the second half gave the Bulls some hope as he also got on the score sheet for the second time in two matches. The gamed ended at 4-1 to the Rangers.

Coach Perry, while disap-

pointed with the result, said the team actually played quite well and they all gave one hundred percent.

“We played the best game of the season despite the result, everyone worked hard for each other,” “We conceded some silly goals tonight, but they all count, we need to be a little more polished up front; we obviously missed Darcy (McCormack) and Jamie Carroll who are both injured but the boys that stepped up did a great job, just the finishing wasn’t there.”

In other matches, the Youth team under the guidance of coach Luch Avolio, notched up their first win of the season with a 3-1 win over the Rangers.

The ladies premier team continued their fine form away defeating the Stratford Dolphins on Sunday by three goals to one.

The goals came from Aly Slyney, Tonia-Maree Rantucci and Victoria Owokran.

All competition has a break this weekend and will resume on May 11.

Brothers claim win in top of table match

THE Atherton Roosters and Cairns Brothers delivered a spectacular top of the table contest in muddy conditions at Stan Williams Park on Sunday.

Both teams wasted no time in tearing into each other from the start which set the platform for a very entertaining 80 minutes of rugby league. Punishing defence from both packs and a willingness to throw the ball around in the slippery conditions earned plenty of praise for the high quality of the match from those in attendance.

In the end it was Brothers who took the points 28-18 over the Roosters after the score was locked at 12 all at the break.

Tries at the 55th and 60th minutes pushed Brothers ahead 2412 before a try to Nigel Woodleigh put Atherton back in the hunt at 24-18.

The Roosters looked to be closing on their opposition but were denied two efforts after pressuring the Brothers for a long period of play. Brothers posted their final try with two minutes of play remaining after catching the Roosters defence short out wide.

The Roosters and Brothers now share the first grade points table lead on 6 followed by Kangaroos 5, Ivanhoes 5, Innisfail 5, Edmonton 4, Suburbs 3, Mossman 2, Yarrabah 2, Mareeba

2, Tully 0. In reserve grade, the Roosters slogged out a 22-6 win over Brothers after leading 12-6 at the break.

Paul Nasser and Darren Ball both had strong games for the Roosters. The Roosters under 18 side were full of mistakes and went down 42-8 to Brothers.

Atherton Roosters players Ned Blackman and Luke La Rosa have been named in the Cairns representative side for the weekend’s Foley Shield competition in Townsville.

The Atherton Roosters next match is on Saturday May 11 when they host Suburbs at the Mungalli Creek Dairy Stadium.
