“I would really like to get into song writing,” he said.

“I learnt a lot about it and enjoyed the experience at the academy and it’s something that I would like to pursue.

“I’d love to be able to make a living from it.”

You will be able to watch Brendan perform when the Walkamin Country music club get together and at various music festivals across the region.

He said: “I’ve got great support from my mates at school, mum and dad are great and I would like to take the opportunity to thank the Walkamin Country Music Club for all the advice and direction that they give to not only me but all the young performers in the area.”

The future sure looks bright for this young man, a fine example of the quality artists coming out of our region.

Jess makes it to top 20 in service awards

Prison officer suspended A custodial correctional officer from Lotus Glen Correctional Centre has been suspended in the past week pending an investigation into allegations of sleeping on duty.

The second, unrelated matter, involves an officer from Brisbane Correctional Centre who was suspended pending an investigation into allegations of inappropriate behaviour towards female co-workers.

Both matters are being investigated by the Queensland Corrective Services Ethical Standards Unit.

All officers are expected to behave professionally and ethically in the discharge of their duties.

Aspiring performer Brendan Wright has his heart set on becoming a country music star.

The Mareeba born and bred student who attends St Stephen’s Catholic College recently took part in the Tamworth Academy of Country Music Australia program to gain some in-depth experience in the world of country music.

Brendan took up singing and playing the guitar five years ago and is now determined to carve up a career in the industry.

His dad often listened to country music on the radio and he took a liking to it and decided to give it a go after one of his teachers told him he had a good voice.

“I’m a fan of the old style country music,” he said.

“I like artists like Merle Haggard, Johnny Cash, Slim Dusty, Hank Williams and some of the more modern artists, Adam Brand and Troy Cassar-Daley.”

Jess Paton is back at work at Mareeba’s Discount Drug Store after being named in Queensland’s top 20 Pharmacy Assistant of the Year Awards.

Jess, 26, flew down to Brisbane for a networking session and workshop with the other finalists and said it was an amazing experience. “To be so lucky to meet 17 other amazing women that are just as crazy about pharmacy and customer service as I am is so refreshing,” she said.

“I had a great day networking with these amazing women with

ideas to improve our pharmacy and to encourage others in our work places to not only step forward for customers but step up!”

Jess’ mum flew down to Brisbane from Mareeba to surprise her for the function and attended the award announcement with Jess’ brother Lachlan who lives in Brisbane.

“It is something I would suggest to everyone,” said Jess.

“I hope that one day they will offer that kind of customer service training to all staff all over Australia in pharmacy.”

Telstra issues plague Mareeba

Mareeba residents living on the eastern side of town were struggling with poor Telstra mobile phone service recently after interference from a local radio station’s equipment.

Telstra Area General Manager Rachel Cliffe said: “External interference that was causing disruption to 3G mobile services for some customers in parts of the Mareeba area was identified and isolated late last week. Our 4GX service was not impacted.”

Ms Cliffe said the radio station was unaware of the problems until they were contacted

“Dimbulah is not a ghost town” say the people of Dimbulah who want the rest of the community to know that business is booming despite some recent shop closures. Some of the longstanding businesses including Dimbulah One Stop, the butchers, Bendigo Bank, TGT, the Post Office and Dimbulah Health and Beauty are thriving, as well as new comer Soul Bake Co. “I’ve always had a steady

business,” said Margaret Carroll owner of Dimbulah One Stop.

“My business has been going 70 years and never closed. I’m in my 17th year and it’s business as usual. In fact I’ve been busier recently.”

Margaret is just one of the business owners from the town that is concerned about the negative image of the closure of the recent Foodworks supermarket, followed by the Funky Mango café last week. But she says locals still want to shop locally.

She and Amanda Prior from

Dimbulah Butchers have started to stock some of the supermarket items that locals can no longer get in town since the supermarket shut at the end of last month.

“This is the best year I’ve had and I’ve been here for seven years,” said Amanda.

“We started to stock a few extra items like cheese and salami and then we have the fruit and veggie run every week, the same as the One Stop.”

The business people say the closing down of the supermarket followed by the café was just a

coincidence and not a sign that Dimbulah is struggling.

In fact some of the businesses are thriving thanks to a lot of recent development happening on local farms.

“We open our doors at 6am and we are flat stick until about 8am just with the tradies wanting coffees and pies etc,” said Suzie Grace from Soul Bake Co. “I’ve got two girls doing full time hours and I just need to keep giving them more and more hours and that’s great because they’re both local.”

Councillors vote on Show Cause Tablelands Regional Councillors voted to suspend taking any action over an Atherton business that began operating before it had received council approval to do so.

Laneway Mechanical opened its doors for customers back in May despite a decision over its development application not due to be voted on by councillors until later this month.

The business was served with

a Show Cause notice by council officers over the breach, meaning that the business owners had to show council why they should not take further legal action against them. It is the first step in legal proceedings.

But at the latest TRC council meeting, councillors voted behind closed doors not to take any further action until a decision had been made over the application at the August 30 meeting.

Spate of drug driving charges on the Tablelands Officers from Herberton and Mareeba last week intercepted a number of vehicles and located five drug drivers.

The three women aged 32 and 34-years-old and two men aged 37 and 41-years-old have

all been charged with drug driving and are scheduled to appear in the Atherton Magistrates Court in October. OIC of Herberton Police, Sergeant Jon Smy, reminds motorists to think about their actions.

Atherton School Local church Food finalist in awards Bank helps the needy After winning regional awards last month, this week the Atherton State High School community has celebrated the announcement that they are state finalists in two Showcase Awards for Excellence. The Showcase Awards for Excellence in Schools are presented annually to Queensland state schools with excellent practices that significantly improve outcomes for students.

Atherton SHS is the only school in Queensland to be in the running for two awards – one The Showcase Award for Excellence in Industry Partnerships for the innovative Online Col-

lege of Advanced STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering & Mathematics) and the other for The Teachers Health Showcase Award for Teacher of the Year. OCAS Head of School and developer, David Platz, said that he “was extremely honoured and grateful to see the work of many over the past 14 years be recognised at this level”.

The second award recognises the incredible work and outcomes led by teacher Carly Sopronick. During her time at Atherton SHS, Carly led work to develop the capability of her teaching colleagues to improve

outcomes for students at Atherton High. Carly credits her colleagues’ commitment to her success.

The awards conclude with the final judging on October 25 and 26, with the winners announced at the gala dinner in Brisbane on Friday October 26.

Royals Church Mareeba has recently pioneered a direct move into the community by visiting families and supplying food and care as part of the Food Bank program that has been running since 2004.

Food Bank coordinator Chantle Moss, who has been overseeing the new initiative, said the idea is to bring food parcels into people’s homes so they can cook the food themselves.

Food Bank comes under Royals Care a “Registered Charitable Organization” which is an arm of Royal Church.

and Natasha Hobbler are leading this initiative and help identify those in the community that need the service the most.

Chantle processes all donated food, handles repackaging and keeps record of all incoming and outgoing food parcels.

These parcels are then given to people in a crisis situation or in need, either on a referral bases or to those people coming directly to the Royals Church office.

Royal Care’s mandate is to reach into the community in a way that truly meets the needs of families and a person in need, the Food Bank is one way they are

catering to this need.

All that they do and all that they give out is free of all charge.

Next chapter for Mt Emerald Wind Farm Mount Emerald Wind Farm developer Ratch Australia Corporation proudly announces the achievement of the next major milestone – the start of the ‘energisation’ process – the first connection to the Powerlink grid on Thursday 2nd August.

After approximately 10 days of initial testing, the first two towers will be energised and commence turning.

Project Construction Director, Rene Kuypers stated that “This is our major milestone since the delivery of the first tower sections in October last year. The Commissioning process tests all elements of the site to ensure everything is safely and reliably operating before power is sent into the grid, and will continue with more and more towers brought online over the next two months.”

In the week when Owners Site Engineering Rep, Paul McDonald and Community Engagement Facilitator, Kim Forde are hosting a site visit of the MEWF Community Consultative Committee to show them the achievements of the last few months, it is iconic that this milestone is also achieved.

They proudly showed the neighbouring community representatives from around the windfarm site and from the Chambers of Commerce of Mareeba and

Atherton, and Canegrowers, that the 42nd tower has been completely erected this week, with another 8 towers partially erected. Only 3 more towers remain to start. These will be completed over the next month. Local bus operator, Emersons, drove the group up to Tower 9 to view the site on Sunday morning, allowing them to ask questions and take photos to share with their communities.

All work has been completed whilst remaining within our 73.5Ha clearing limit, and protecting our resident Quoll and rare plant populations and indigenous cultural heritage to the greatest extent possible. Work crews numbers are reducing now as the major road and substation construction activities wind down, whilst our permanent crew employment is being finalised ready to hand over once commissioning is complete.

It is now expected that we will ‘flick the switch’ on of full commercial operations in early November, says Ratch Executive General-Manager, Mr Anthony Yeates. A great achievement in delivering this $380m project and allowing 180MW of renewable energy to supply the power needs of more than 1/3 of Far North Queenslanders long into the future.

QCS launches HEP C videos

Queensland Corrective Services, in partnership with Hepatitis Queensland, has rolled out three educational videos to all correctional centres across the State in a bid to curb the spread of hepatitis C. Lotus Glen Correctional Centre became the first prison in Australia to become free of hepatitis C last year following the introduction of new medication.

The Lotus Glen Health Service team received a highly commended award in 2017 Queensland Health Awards for Excellence for the achievement.

Commissioner Martin said the aim was to have all correctional centres free of hepatitis C.

“There are huge benefits for the community as a whole in eradicating hep C from the prison environment,” he said.

The three videos produced

by Hepatitis Queensland focus on risk factors, testing and treatment. Queensland Corrective Services Commissioner Peter Martin said the release of the videos is timely with Saturday 28 July 2018 marking World Hepatitis Day. “Hepatitis C is more common among prisoners than in the general community. If we can reduce the prevalence of hep C in the prison population, it has a positive effect on rates in the community,”

Cynthia celebrates World Ranger Day

The Palaszczuk Government recognised the important work our rangers do across Queensland, including 244 rangers in the Far North Queensland region, as part of World Ranger Day. Member for Cook Cynthia Lui said World Ranger Day was a great chance for all Queenslanders to show their support for the hard-working and dedicated rangers.

“Here in Far North Queensland, we have 187 rangers with Queensland Parks and Wildlife Service (QPWS) and 57 Indig-

enous Land and Sea Rangers, who all do an amazing job preserving our natural environment,” Ms Lui said.

“Our local network of rangers contributes greatly to the protection of Queensland’s environment, and our state’s Indigenous cultural heritage.

“Vital work carried out by our rangers includes turtle monitoring and the removal of ghost nets, which can be fatal for marine life, in addition to pest plant control, managed burns, soil conservation and feral pig control.”

Red Dirt tablelands FNQ have donated $500 to the Moss family of Atherton to help with medical costs for one of the younger children. The money was raised at a recent Black Friday event held by Red Dirt at their Tolga base.

Get down to Centenary Park this Saturday, August 11 for the annual Gold Panning Championships and be in with the chance to win some fantastic prizes.

The North Queensland Miners Association has been holding the event for 20 years, initially in Mt Surprise but now at the Mareeba Heritage Centre.

Event co-ordinator Lyn Byrne said it was a great family day out that introduces kids and adults alike to the traditional art of gold panning.

“It’s a great chance to catch up with other miners that all come to town for the competition,” she said.

“Gold panning is still as popular now as it ever was. It’s an important industry to the area and it’s important that we carry on this event to keep the tradition alive.”

Along with the Gold Rush competition, there will be stalls from the Department of Natural Resources, Mines and Energy, gem and treasure stalls and demonstrations of equipment by Leading Edge Electronics.

The Mareeba Scouts will be providing a sausage sizzle and the competition will be run in conjunction with the monthly Mareeba Markets.

For those that have a knack for finding gold there are some fantastic prizes on offer including a metal detector, gold panning kits, vouchers from 4x4 FNQ as well as trophies for the

winners.

The event kicks off at 8am and finishes at 2.30pm and to have a go in the competition it is $5 for juniors and $10 for adults.

One eye on the future

Soon the stop and go signs used by traffic controllers and schools will be easier to see, thanks to the foresight of a Dimbulah innovator.

Ray Kearney, 71, was driving on the Kuranda Range a few years ago when he was stopped by road works traffic signals.

“You can hardly see them in the shadows,” said Mr Kearney.

“I said that should be LED, so then I went about and designed it. “ It’s not the first time the former plasterer and business owner has innovated something new.

Semi-retired, Mr Kearney said he often sees something that he can make improvements to.

But creating the LED lit stop and go signs is turning into a game-changer in terms of safety on our roads with the Department of Transport and Main Roads indicating that they make them mandatory for traffic controllers in the near future.

Mr Kearney enlisted the help of Sunshine Coast friend Bob Byers to help create the sign

which had to undergo rigorous testing and meet the high standards set by the Government department.

“It wasn’t an easy task to sell this to them,” said Mr Kearney.

“They made us qualify for these licenses – you have to have the right LED lights, you have to have the right reflector, it has to be waterproof etc. There’s five different categories and we had to get laboratory tests done.”

The signs are now in the manufacturing stage and due to hit the market in October.

Orders have already been placed and Mr Kearney and his business partner Mr Byers are expecting to produce around 1000 a week to fulfil the demand.

Mr Kearney moved to Dimbulah seven years ago to run an organic food farm which was created to supply food to he and wife Debbie’s former Sunshine Coast organic health food store, Kunara. The business was sold in late 2016 to leading natural and organic supermarket business Flannerys after being started by Mrs Kearney 28 years ago. It grew into a thriving organisation, employing more than 100

staff with hundreds of customers going through its doors each day.

The couple now live at their Dimbulah farm, Your Organic Oasis, which is separately managed and supplies organic produce to shops across the state.

For Mr Kearney, however, there is no sitting back and revelling in his success. Together with Mr Byers he has been working on a number of other exciting projects including the creation of ‘Dunny Cool’ a solar powered exhaust fan and light for portable toilets.

“I prefer call myself an innovator,” he said.

“An inventor is someone that invents something that’s brand new. Innovation is improving something that’s already existing.

“Necessity is another invention, you see something and you see the improvements you can make to it.”

A solar battery trickle charger, LED house numbers and solar LED road studs are all in the pipeline for future development for Mr Kearney and Mr Byers’ business RR LED Traffic Signs.

Generous donation at Mareeba Hospital

Koah couple Leslie and Anne Mills have yet again helped to ease the lives of patients at Mareeba Hospital by donating $50,000 to the Far North Queensland Hospital Foundation.

The money has been used to purchase a state-of-the-art piece of equipment – a Hamilton T1 Ventilator – used when critical patients need to be incubated.

Mareeba Hospital Director of Nursing and Midwifery Vickye Coffey said the new machine puts them ahead of other hospitals across the state.

“This new machine is on the wish list of all emergency departments across the state and

the Mareeba Emergency Department is fortunate enough to have been gifted one through a generous donation from the Mills family,” Ms Coffey said.

“Staff are very excited to have this ventilation machine to use and it will further enhance patient safety for the Mareeba community.

“This is especially the case for those critically ill patients who need full or partial ventilation during transportation to the Cairns Hospital.” Mrs Mills said she and Leslie were pleased to support their local hospital.

“The Mareeba Hospital staff were just wonderful when Leslie injured his fingers a few years ago, so that was when we decided to start supporting them

as well as the broader Far North Queensland region,” Mrs Mills said.

“Sometimes when we hand over a piece of equipment we’ve bought for them, the staff just get so excited, you’d think it was Christmas,” she said.

Foundation CEO Tony Franz said the latest donation brings the Mills family contribution to health care in FNQ to more than $343,000. More than $210,000 of that money has gone directly to the Mareeba Hospital.

He said more and more people are choosing to support the foundation with last financial year donation levels at their highest ever in its 21 year history.

“I think people get it at the moment that the Government is

not a bottomless pit,” he said.

“The funds dry out and if people are in a position to donate and they have the funds to do so then what better way to improve the healthcare, because they don’t know when they’re going to need it.”

He said many people choose the foundation for their donations as they know the money will stay in the local area.

“100 per cent of the donations go to the purpose intended,” he said. “None of it is eroded by administrative fees etc and secondly, when the local people here either participate in an activity or donate they know that they’re money is staying here to benefit the people of far north Queensland.”

Zane’s a winning scholar Earlier this year Mareeba State High Student Zane Reddicliffe applied for a Youth off the Streets Scholarship.

These scholarships are valued at $6,000 over two years and are aimed at ensuring some of the schools high potential young citizens get the opportunity to reach their goals.

Despite being just a bit too young to apply, and the fact that only 22 scholarships are awarded across Australia each year, Zane decided to give it a go and was successful.

Zane was one of only 22 young people from across Australia to be awarded this scholarship is truly an outstanding achievement.

Zane will be flying to Sydney in October where he will meet with the other scholarship recipi-

ents for a networking weekend, and then a presentation ceremony at the University of Sydney.

He will be appointed a special mentor for the next two years to guide him on whatever path he chooses to take over the next two years.

Plaque to be unveiled at event

The VDC plaque erected for VP73 by National Servicemen’s Association – Tableland Branch.

The often overlooked WWII service of the 100,000 men of the Volunteer Defence Corps will be one of the features for the 73rd anniversary of Victory in the Pacific commemorations at the Rocky Creek War Memorial Park at 10:45am this Sunday, August 12.

As an initiative of the National Servicemen’s Association – Tableland Branch, a memorial plaque has been cast for unveiling on the day.

Branch President John Hardy said: “The Department of Veteran’s Affair had no hesitation in providing a ‘Saluting Their Service’ Commemorative Grant for the manufacture and installation of the plaque.

“The last unit plaque was unveiled in 2013 so it brings a renewed focus for the ceremony this year”.

He went on to say: “We are honoured to have our Branch Patron Ray Byrnes and Valarie Fry (nee O’Rourke) participate in the unveiling.

“Branch member Bill Mc Donald initiated the idea to have this plaque erected. All of their fathers were active members of the VDC at Danbulla and Kairi.”

The Volunteer Defence Corps (VDC) was formed in July 1940 by the Returned Sailors Soldiers and Airmen’s Imperial League of Australia (RSSAILA now RSL) to carry out home defence duties using World War I veterans.

It reached its maximum strength in June 1942 when enlistments in Queensland alone totalled over 17,000 men.

The VDC covered coastwatching duties in the Torres Strait and along the eastern coast and Gulf of Carpentaria.

Initially the role of the VDC units on callout was limited to the active and passive defence of their home areas when they would be formed into platoons to maintain roadblocks, demolish bridges and other facilities and then to implement guerrilla warfare if their area was overrun.

They were also to gather and pass on intelligence and provide guides for any field force units.

In North Queensland, the HQ D Group VDC was located in the AMP Building in Townsville.

Other Battalions (Bn) were 15 Bn Mackay, 16 Bn Townsville, 21 Bn Charters Towers, 22 Bn Bowen 23 Regt VDC Charters Towers, 17 Bn Cairns and 18 Bn Innisfail.

The latter two units feature on the plaque as many of the towns across the coastal and Tableland areas had members stationed there.

Some even died on duty one being WO2 Robert James Clarke, 53 of 18 Battalion VDC who died of heart failure at Millaa Millaa on June 19, 1944 and was subsequently buried at Atherton War Cemetery.

The VDC even featured mounted units with No. 10 Platoon Upper Barron whose C Company HQ was located at Herberton.

Members of inland VDC units were freed from having to attend regular training in May 1944 and the VDC was officially disbanded on 24 August 1945, although some members continued to serve until later that year.

Many family and friends of those that served are expected to be present for the “Meet and Greet’ being hosted by the Nashos from 9am to 10am for those that are having unit or memorial plaques unveiled on the day.

There will be static displays containing information relating to the VDC at both the Rocky Creek Nasho shelter and across the road at the WWII entertainment igloo following the ceremony where tours and lunch will be available.

Last year’s VP Day celebrations were supported by local cadets.

VP Day celebrated at Rocky Creek memorial Recognising 73 years since fighting ceased in the Pacific, this year’s Victory in the Pacific event will again remember and recognise Tablelands men and women who served in World War II. “Every year we host a commemorative event at the Rocky Creek War Memorial Park that attracts people from across Australia,” said Mayor Joe Paronella. “During the war, the Tablelands area was the largest

military base in Australia, and Rocky Creek was the site of a 3000-bed hospital that treated over 60,000 patients — the largest military hospital in the Southern Hemisphere.”

Nearly 40,000 Australians were killed during the war, and 100,000 wounded. On Sunday, August 12 they will be honoured at Rocky Creek. There will be a meet and greet from 9am when the six families who are dedicating plaques will

speak about their family member. At 10.45am we’ll have the commemorative service, which includes laying of wreaths and dedication of the plaques.

There will be historical displays and a coffee van on site and, across the road, Atherton Rotary Club will be conducting tours of the igloo and the Tolga Lions Club will be serving lunch.

“We encourage everyone to attend this significant commem-

orative event,” said Councillor Byrnes.

The Rocky Creek rest area will remain open for self-contained vehicles and trailers during the weekend, however space will be reduced to allow for event parking.

The speed limit on the Kennedy Highway near the entrance to the memorial park will be reduced between 9am and 1pm.

It has come to the attention of local historian Elwin Troughton that a local soldier that gave his life for his country has been left off the Mareeba Cenotaph.

The oversight for the omission was simply due to communication failure with information not coming up the line to authorities due to the war.

Below are some historical facts about Private William John Joyce taken from Ms Troughton’s new book about to be published called “The Deafening Silence Came” PRIVATE WILLIAM JOHN JOYCE 1894-1918: William John Joyce was born into the Roman Catholic faith in Omeo, Victoria in August 1893, the son of Peter and Mary Joyce [nee Smith].

The family moved to North Queensland where he secured employment as a bridge carpenter when railway construction was at its highest. Standing 5’9” in height with fair complexion, blue eyes with dark brown hair and weighing 154lbs.

William enlisted with the Australian Imperial Force in Cairns on 14 September 1916 as a private and was issued with Service number 3118.

Following his training with the 7/4 Pioneers Machine Gun Corps at Enoggera his unit was then deployed for overseas service.

William embarked aboard the HMAT Kyarra A55 in Brisbane

on 17 November 1916 and arrived at Plymouth, England on 30 January 1917.

He trained with the 10th Machine Gun Corps at Camp Sutton, Mandeville and Grantham for four months each time after which the 4th Pioneer Battalion departed from Folkestone, England en-route to Camiers, France and went into action two days later on 7 November 1917 facing the enemy in terrible conditions with a bitter cold winter bearing down across the quagmires of battle fields.

On 4th April 1918 the enemy broke the Australian lines of defence and fierce fighting raged around the village of VillersBretonneux which was held by the Australians but captured from them on 24 April.

The enemy was met with counter attacks that same night and into the anniversary of ANZAC Day when the Australians retook the village and liberated the people again.

In repeated sudden and heavy assaults the Germans in the Somme sector were defeated and in May the 3rd Division advanced against the shelling and weapons fire capturing high ground to the east. Fifteen Australians were killed, eighty wounded and 300 prisoners taken.

William John Joyce was serving with the 3rd Machine Gun Battalion when killed in action on 6 May 1918 and has no known grave.

His name appears on the Villers-Bretonneux Memorial, Picardie, France.

William John Joyce’s name is located on the Australian Roll of Honour at panel 176 in the Commonwealth area of the Australia War Memorial in Canberra.

The position of his name is indicated by the poppy on the plan and was anticipated to be projected onto the exterior of the Hall of Memory for the final time on: Sunday 17 July, 2016 at 3.53am.

The Mareeba Shire Council will place the name of William John Joyce on the cenotaph in the coming weeks.

The annual ‘Pink Ribbon Garden Party’ will be held at the Mareeba Turf Club this Saturday August 11, with guests treated to live entertainment, a fashion parade

and an array of raffles.

The event has raised more than $10,000 each year for more than ten years, supporting Cancer Council Queensland’s Pink Campaign which helps support more than 4180 Queensland women diagnosed with breast and gynaecological cancers.

T-MSC2018-17 LEASE OF SITE FOR AIRCRAFT REFUELLING FACILITY - MAREEBA AIRPORT AVIATION INDUSTRIAL PARK The Mareeba Shire Council hereby invites tenders for the lease of the site within the new Mareeba Airport Aviation Industrial Park that has been designated for use as an aircraft refuelling facility.

The Aviation Industrial Park is currently being constructed at the western end of the Airport off Ray Road. Access is via JRM Braes Road.

The refuelling site currently forms part of one of the proposed larger lots at the eastern end of the Aviation Industrial Park subdivision but will be surveyed as a separate lot once a tender has been accepted and required site dimensions determined.

New junior black belts in Dimbulah

Action Night for students training at Rhee Tae Kwon Do in Dimbulah was held on Wednesday June 20. Family and friends and members of the Dimbulah community attended on the night to support the efforts and achievements of training members.

Two local youngsters excelled – 10 year old Ricki Sivyer and 11 year old Mackenzie Stephens, applied for their Junior Black Belt test on the night under the guidance of 3rd Dan Black Belt

“Both girls were determined and focused during their grading test,” said Regional Instructor Phil.

“Ricki and Mackenzie always train hard in class and are keen to learn. They are respectful and courteous and a pleasure to teach.

For their Junior Black Belt grading test both students performed several rounds of free sparing, 3 step and 1 step sparring. Boards breaks demonstrate students effective technique and

power and both students broke single timber boards on their first attempt with side kick, spinning back kick and knife hand strike. 10 year old Ricki Sivyer performed running, jumping, flying side kick over 3 students breaking a timber board and 11 year old Mackenzie Stephens performed the same flying side kick jumping over four students.

“At such a young age these two students achieved their Junior Black Belt due to their dedication and commitment to training,” commented 2nd Dan Branch Instructor Gaye Taylor “Rhee Tae Kwon Do is a family orientated Martial Art for anyone over six years of age.

Through regular training, students condition their bodies and learn skills for defending against an attacker and how to deal with bullying. Confidence, self-control, courtesy and perseverance are values every student learns while training towards their goal of Black Belt,” said 2nd Dan Branch Instructor Gaye Taylor.

“Rhee Tae Kwon Do Dimbulah Training Centre has had the privilege of training many amazing, talented students through to Black Belt who go on to achieve bigger and better throughout their life.

Sports clubs encouraged to apply for funding

Federal Leichhardt MP Warren Entsch has encouraged local sporting groups across Cairns and Far North Queensland to apply for funding under a federal government program aimed at upgrading local community sport infrastructure.

The $29.7 million Community Sport Infrastructure Grant Program, which was launched today, enables sport and community organisations to apply for grants up to $500,000 to upgrade sporting infrastructure.

Mr Entsch urged Cairns and Far North Queensland sporting groups to consider projects that would help build participation in physical activity, community partnerships and inclusiveness.

“Sporting facilities are vital for inspiring physical activity and health, but also for building community spirit and pride,” Mr Entsch said.

“I encourage sport and community groups to collaborate and

think about projects that could enhance our facilities in Cairns and Far North Queensland.

“Even the smallest of facility projects can have a big impact on boosting local business, economy, health and social cohesiveness.

“Improving lighting, playing surfaces and accessibility for different ages and genders are just some of the ways sporting facilities can be made safer and more appealing.”

The program will be managed by Sport Australia, the Australian Government’s leading agency for sport and physical activity.

Applications for funding under the Community Sport Infrastructure Grant Program close on September 14.

Mareeba local, 14-year-old Liam Waters competed in the North Queensland Short Course Road Racing Championships at Proserpine last weekend.

As part of the Interclub series between the Whitsundays, Townsville and FNQ club’s points were awarded over the three events.

Despite two crashes on Saturday and one on the Sunday meaning losing valuable points, Liam still came away with overall 1st place for the GP class, 1st overall for Motolites and 2nd overall for the Junior Road Race category. It was a gruelling schedule with some determined and talented opposition over the 18 races Liam contested that weekend.

“I made a couple of mistakes on the Saturday which cost me some points,” said Liam.

“I crashed in the morning in GP when I came in too hot into Corner 1 trying to get past a slower rider and I shot off the track into the air barrier and I also crashed when the front end tucked in the last Motolite race at the end of the day after I lost a little concentration due to fa-

tigue.

“Sunday was better for me and I only had one crash in Motolites when another rider and I came together in Corner 1 and we both crashed. Luckily the bike was ok and I didn’t get any injuries so was able to finish the day and I had enough points from the previous two rounds to get through.” he said.

The local FNQRR club is currently on a drive to boost the numbers of juniors riding and racing. If there is anyone interested in learning to race then they should contact the club via email or Facebook. The club hosts coaching days as well as racing events and those of all ages and skill levels are welcome.

Liam is off next weekend to Port Kembla in NSW to continue his racing involvement in the Motostars series at the penultimate round of the 2018 season.

Liam has recently received sponsorship from local Mareeba business Rotorworks Ltd and its owner Steve Johnston who has been following Liam’s development with interest.

A huge night of results for the Atherton Roosters on Saturday with the club taking wins over the Tully Tigers in all three grades played at the Mungalli Creek Dairy Stadium.

In the under 19 game, the Roosters overcame a slow start to finish 40-14 winners over Tully with forward Cassy Steel crossing for a double in the seven tries to three victory.

The young Roosters have now cemented third spot on the points table for the coming finals series which start on September 2.

The reserve grade result was in the balance throughout before a strong finish gave the Roosters a 16-6 win.
