What’s the hold up? By Michael Serenc THE developer behind a proposed $21 million shopping centre for Mareeba is fed up with council red tape delaying a crucial land purchase. Reedlodge Pty Ltd is still waiting on Mareeba Shire Council approval for the purchase of a small, triangular 1128m2 parcel of state-owned land reserved for aged housing it has trusteeship
over. The block would add to Reedlodge’s existing 12,403m2 of land situated across from Mareeba Plaza along Byrnes St, allowing the company to proceed with a development application. But Reedlodge solicitor Pietro Girgenti claimed council CEO Peter Franks had so far refused to nominate a council meeting on which the land sale would be voted on.
“The delay is seriously putting the entire project in jeopardy,” he said. “It’s causing concern with the shopping centre’s proposed anchor tenant as to the desire of the local council for a project of this nature. “It’s raising questions about whether or not the support is there for them to warrant them investing in the development.” While the Department of Mines and Natural
Resources has the final say on selling the land, it will be influenced by council’s view on the proposed purchase. Aside from today’s special meeting to adopt the 2015/2016 annual financial report, there are only two public council meetings left for this year – November 16 and December 21.

Come one, come all to police ball TABLELANDS residents are being urged to dig deep for the boys and girls in blue. The Tablelands Police Ball is making a return to Mareeba next month after about a decade’s absence. Ball committee member Senior Constable Aleda Day said the fun-filled night at Mareeba International Club was not to be missed. “The reason for the function is that we have some members of our police family on the Tablelands going through serious illness at the moment,” she said. “It is our hope to have a fun night that the community can come along to, our officers can look forward to, and any money raised will help support those in our police family who are doing it tough at the moment.” Guests at the ball will be treated to a two-course

FNQ Country Music Festival open category winner Darryl Chaplain will MC the event. “We’ll have also have some trivia questions and lucky door prizes,” Sen Constable Day said. The Cairns Road Policing Unit will bring up one of their police bikes for guests to sit on and be photo-
graphed with. “It’s not a night of speeches, it’s going to be a fun night,” Sen Constable Day said. Tickets are $65 per person or $600 for a table of 10, while dress style is Melbourne Cup race wear, with the ball to be held on November 12 from 6pm. To book, visit www.trybooking.com/226190. Tickets will be on sale until November 4.
Dig deep for Christmas Appeal
ADVERTISING MANAGER Natasha Srhoj
JOURNALIST Michael Serenc
CHRISTMAS CHEER: Mareeba councillors Nipper Brown, Lenore Wyatt, Mayor Tom Gilmore and Kevin Davies are urging everybody to get behind the annual Mayor’s Christmas Appeal.
MAREEBA Shire residents are being urged to help the less fortunate this festive season. Council has launched its annual Mayor’s Christmas Appeal, which will deliver vouchers to families in need. "We want everyone in our community to be able to celebrate Christmas without feeling stressed about not being able to afford even the basic necessities,” Mareeba mayor Tom Gilmore said. "Assistance provided through the appeal is a gesture of goodwill and that adds a little cheer to what may be a difficult time of the year for some people in our community." The vouchers will be distributed via several charity groups and welfare agencies including Mareeba Community Centre, Blue Care Mareeba, St Vincent De Paul Mareeba, Dimbulah Community Centre and Kuranda Neighbourhood Centre. Donations can be made at council's service centres in Mareeba and Kuranda, with more than $2000 worth of vouchers given to families in need last year. People can also send their donation by cheque to the Mayor's Christmas Appeal, PO Box 154, Mareeba 4880. Make the cheque payable to Mayor's Christmas Appeal. No food items or toys can be accepted for the appeal. Cr Gilmore also encouraged those needing assistance to apply at local welfare agencies. To be eligible to receive assistance, residents need to be receiving a government welfare benefit. Those residents who are outside the welfare system should see their local agency for assessment.

Firies warn to get ready BE ALERT: Bushfire season is upon the Tablelands.
ONE of the Far North’s top rural firefighters has warned Tablelanders to prepare now before a potential disaster strikes the region. As bushfire season goes into full swing, Rural Fire Service (RFS) Far Northern Region Bushfire safety officer Matthew Eckhardt said landholders needed to ensure their properties were cleared of debris, develop a suitable evacuation plan and familiarise themselves with the Bureau of Meteorology’s fire danger rating scale, which is cur-
rently set to high for the Tablelands. “A few people prepare themselves properly every bushfire season, but the majority say “It won’t happen to us”. But one day it may,” he said. “At the end of the day, the risk is the same no matter where you are on the Tablelands. It’s just a matter of when. “Some areas may get rain this year, others may not. It’s just whether the conditions suit that particular area on the day.”
Mr Eckhardt said landholders should also en- ately” and “suitably managed”. sure their properties had good firebreaks, good Mr Laing also warned that arson charges access points for vehicles and an ample supply would apply to anyone who failed to comply with permit conditions. of water. “It’s just about being prepared which is my To report any suspicious behaviour regarding people loitering around bushland reserves, conmain message,” he said. Mr Eckhardt stressed that landholders who wished to light a fire bigger than two metres in any direction required a permit. “We’re coming into the fire season and we need to make sure everyone’s abiding by the conditions of the fire warden, who established the control measures for the permit system,” he said. > Legs Of Pork .............................. $10.99 KG Mr Eckhardt’s call was backed RFS > Whole Prime Rumps .................. $14.99 KG Far Northern regional manager Lawrence > Whole Prime Rib Fillets ............. $24.99 KG Laing, who said the permit system en> Italian Sausages ........................ $13.99 KG sured burns were “conducted appropri-

Red tape slows land vote FROM Page 1 A petition supporting the shopping centre was accepted by council at this month’s meeting on October 12. Mareeba pensioner Joan Moore gathered 764 signatures in support of the project before submitting them to council last month. Mr Girgenti claimed council had made four separate Right To Information requests regarding correspondence between Reedlodge and four different State Government departments over the land purchase dating back to December last year. In a statement to The Express, Mareeba mayor Tom Gilmore said council was “taking all reasonable and responsible measures to ensure that all possible information is available to councillors” over the land in
question. “Council takes this responsibility very seriously and will make this determination in due course," he said. Mr Girgenti said some councillors had taken up Reedlodge’s offer of one-on-one meetings to discuss the proposal, while the developer’s representatives had also given a formal presentation in front of all councillors regarding the shopping centre and land purchase. “The proponent (Reedlodge) has offered on a multitude of occasions to give any further information that council might require,” he said. If approved, construction of the centre would take between 12 and 18 months, generating between 200 and 220 direct and indirect jobs.
Once built, the 7000m2 centre, which will include a major supermarket, is expected to sustain between 200 and 250 direct and indirect jobs. Mr Girgenti stressed Reedlodge had no issue with Mareeba Shire councillors themselves but rather the lengthy process which has so far dragged out a vote on the land purchase. “If such concerning delays are occurring at this early stage of the shopping centre proposal, the developer is starting to question what further delays or brick walls will arise at the development application,” he said. “The proposed tenants for the development are now asking why are all these administrative hurdles being put in place and if the Mareeba Shire is closed for business.”

Shayla dazzles at fitness comp A FORMER Mareeba girl has strutted her stuff on the big stage. Shayla Nucifora competed in the World Beauty Fitness and Fashion (WBFF) Australia World Championship Qualifier on the Gold Coast earlier this month, showing off her impressive physique honed from years of fitness training. Ms Nucifora, who now manages a Brisbane hair salon, said she never considered competing on a professional level until a chance appointment with WBFF veteran and Oasis Health Club owner Alicia Gowans. “I was doing her hair one day and she said “Why don’t you compete?”,” recalled Ms Nucifora. “I’ve always been in the fitness indus-
try but I had never gone to that extent.” A strict, 16-week diet and exercise regime followed for Ms Nucifora, trained under the watchful eye of Ms Gowans. “It was a very short preparation, especially for a first-timer. Alicia got me straight into it,” Ms Nucifora said. “I trained a minimum of six days a week, anywhere between an hour-and-ahalf to two hours per day.” While the 24-year-old martial artist didn’t earn a placing for the World Championships in her “Bikini Short” category, Ms Nucifora said she relished the experience. “It was amazing. You’re competing against Australia’s best fitness models and athletes so it was mind-blowing,” she said.
“I got really good feedback from the judges and it would only be minor changes I’d have to do with my body to make the World Championships.” The daughter of local mango farming couple John and Debbie Nucifora, Ms Nucifora said she was proud to represent her old town at the qualifier. “I had my mum fly down for the competition so it was nice to have some family there,” she said. “It definitely takes you back to your roots...My Dad is a really good mentor too.” Ms Nucifora said she was now keen to compete in other fitness competitions, including in Cairns next year.

LOVING LIFE: Steven Madell with mum Margie.
AT just 21, Steven Madell is Mareeba’s very own action man. The horse-riding, guitar playing, backpacking, archery shooting adventurer has his mum Margie to thank, supporting his dreams every step of the way. Ms Madell was one of 2.8 million unpaid carers recognised for their selfless dedication as part of National Carers Week last week. The mum-of-one has strived to give Steven an active and fulfilling life after he was born with Down Syndrome. “National Carers Week is really good because it opens doors. People acknowledge that these are unpaid carers in the community who do it 24/7,” she said. “It is a full-time job when you’re looking after someone who can’t make a phone call, cross the road or take themselves anywhere. “You’re not only doing stuff for them, you are

training them as well so it’s a constant process.” Ms Madell has frequently taken Steven backpacking around Australia and the world, visiting Bali, Europe and the United Kingdom. Of late, he has been volunteering at Mareeba Men’s Shed and working out with local firefighters at the gym. Ms Madell praised the Mareeba community for their acceptance of Steven, who helps to home deliver The Express every week. “All the boys and girls he’s grown up with are just fantastic. They are the best group of kids. They’ve all known each other since they were three years old,” she said. “If they see something’s wrong and I’m not around, they will step in.” Ms Madell also receives some weekly assistance for Steven from Mareeba disability service provider FlexiChoice.

Local builder recognised at awards A TABLELANDS builder has been recognised for his design nous after picking up a major state award. James Nasser Constructions won Best Individual Home between $451,000 and $550,000 at the Master Builders Queensland 2016 Housing and Construction Awards earlier this month. Claringbold House, which is the personal home of James and Deana Nasser, features a modern design infused with traditional timber styling. After winning the same category at the Far North Queensland Housing and Construction Awards in August, the Nasser’s latest achievement puts them in the running at the Master Builders Australia National Excellence in
Building and Construction Awards next month. Mrs Nasser said the four-bedroom house, located along Claringbold Rd in East Barron, took about 18 months to build after starting in October 2013. “Because we live rurally, we wanted it to be a bit country-orientated but still modern and that was the approach we took,” she said. “It had to suit the environment and where we’re situated, weather-wise.” The house is also equipped with a large home office and two bathrooms, sits on a 12 ha block and is about 420 sq m in size. “The living area has exposed timber hardwood trusses that are handmade by James, which are fairly impressive,” Mrs Nasser said. “We’ve also got a very large timber deck.”
Timber feature walls and floors and polished concrete complete the design. Mrs Nasser said the Master Builders win would help to bolster her husband’s building reputation as well give clients a quality display home to view. “We thought we’d put the effort into this so people could see what James could do,” she said. “We recently decided to do a whole rebrand of the business with a new logo and website just to get our name out there, so this was part and parcel of that. “There’s a lot more Cairns people moving up to the Tablelands and we’d like to focus on that market.”

2016 marks Curves’ 11th year of support for Cancer Council’s Pink Ribbon, raising over $1.7m so far in our efforts to beat women’s cancers! It is estimated about 50 women in Australia are diagnosed with breast and gynaecological cancer every day. Survival rates are increasing due to earlier detection and better treatment but we still have a long way to go. Every October, we support women’s cancer through fundraising events and promotions within our clubs. There are many ways this money helps the Cancer Council - from prevention programs, support services and world class research, the smallest amount has an impact. Our mission is to continue to support and strengthen women and their circle of friends - empowering with fitness, healthy eating and the power of mindfulness and positive self-talk. Over the last 9 years of operation on the Tablelands we have shared our circuit with many women who have fought, championed and some, sadly, that have lost their battle with women’s cancers. The common theme throughout has been our community of support. www.theexpressnewspaper.com.au
We are proud of our women, their grace in the face of their battle and their tenacity to fight. We are incredibly privileged to be a trusted part of their journey and love the support our members offer each other. We are hosting our “Taking the Fight Outside” workout series across the Tablelands every Saturday morning until 12th November - see facebook for details. In addition we have waived out regular joining fee for a $20 donation to Cancer Council until 31st October to celebrate the launch of our NEW Box and Tone Circuits - fun fitness for all ages. We hope you will consider JOINING OUR FIGHT! We are proud to be a part of the Curves Community and we would like to extend a huge thanks to our community for their continued support! For almost a decade your amazing fundraising efforts have been helping brave women affected by breast and gynaecological cancers. The Express, Wednesday, October 26, 2016 PAGE 5
Gun relic to go on display
Creativity dazzles at art awards
HISTORIC: The newly restored German trench mortar to be displayed at Irvinebank School of Arts Hall next month.
A “TROPHY gun” captured on the Western Front during World War I will be put on display at Irvinebank next month. The German trench mortar was originally captured by Australian troops during the war before being brought back to Australia, decommissioned and presented to the Irvinebank community in 1921. More recently, it has undergone a dramatic facelift by local craftsmen after rusting away at Loudoun House Museum. “It was a daunting task that was tackled by Tolga artist blacksmith Hans Pehl under the watchful eye of heritage specialist Gordon Grimwade, and involved months of research and planning,” said Irvinebank School of Arts and Progress Association president Tony Derksen. “The result is an impressive reconstruction in all but its firing capacity, which we made sure is inoperable. It
is a great trophy that deserves pride of place in our First World War displays.” Mr Derksen said replacing the mortar’s old timber wheels was a challenge, enlisting the help of local machinist Bob Barnes, wheelwright Tony Giltrap, Mr Phel and Wilkinson Springworks to build two replicas. “One of the exciting things to come out of this project is the realisation the Tablelands has a remarkably diverse skill base that has united to produce a truly worthwhile memorial to all who fought, Allied or German, for what they believed in so long ago,” Mr Grimwade said. Irvinebank residents have a proud history of wartime service, highlighted by Victoria Cross winner Harry Dalziel and nurse Monica O’Callghan. The gun will be unveiled at a ceremony at the Irvinebank School of Arts Hall at 11am on November 12.

WOW: Mareeba State High School Arts Showcase Awards coordinator Leigh Gargan was amazed at the level of talent on display.
THE next Stephen Spielberg or Pablo Picasso could be unearthed in Mareeba. Young talent and creativity was celebrated at Mareeba State High School in another successful Arts Showcase Awards last Thursday night. The annual event, formerly known as the Data Awards, saw students compete in 24 categories split across photography, visual art and film, as well as a separate theme, “time”, which attracted entrants from all three disciplines. Awards coordinator and media teacher Leigh Gargan said the level of talent on display was incredible. “It’s a culmination of all the creative talent in the school,” she said. “It’s amazing but you don’t know what expect either.” Mrs Gargan said there was no doubt there were future stars in the
making at the awards. “One of the students here is going to be the next Spielberg,” she said. “Even the Years 8s, some of the films they’re making, they could probably pass Year 12 Film and TV they’re that good.” Mrs Gargan said the ever-decreasing price of technology gave students access to quality equipment where they could hone their passion for film or photography no matter where they were. “This year has seen a lot of the younger kids put entries in,” she said. “It’s awesome to see them having a go.” Performances by the school’s student dancers and musicians also entertained the crowd at the awards, including a rousing performance by young singer Kiara Cabassi and piano player Tristan Burford-Baines.

Live entertainment kept everyone going overnight, while a talent quest and “Fashions on the Field” competition made sure there were thrills aplenty. Mr Greasley said a highlight of the relay was Saturday night’s remembrance candle lighting ceremony, which paid tribute to those locals who had tragically lost their battle with cancer. “Unfortunately, cancer is one of those diseases where you can’t find anyone who hasn’t been touched by it,” he said. The relay will head to Atherton next year, with Mr Greasley hoping for a repeat turnout like Mareeba. “That what makes Relay for Life so special – it’s a community-driven event for the community,” he said. While organisers were still tallying the figures at the time of going to print, CCQ Relay For Life coordinator Mike Greasley praised the turnout for the event. “The Tablelands relay is always outstanding for community spirit,” he said. “It just shows that the community really gets behind Relay for Life and everything it stands for.” 20 teams comprised of more than 200 people ran, hopped, skipped or walked their way around Mareeba’s Davies Park in a gruelling 18 hour marathon, finishing on Sunday morning. “It was a relay full of the usual emotion, passion and commitment but with fun thrown in as well,” Mr Greasley said.

Take a step back in time A PHOTO essay paying homage to some of the Tablelands’ iconic buildings is sure to capture the eye of the region’s history buffs. Mareeba police Senior Constable Aleda Day put together the images showcasing the historic Georgetown Police Station, old Croydon Court House and Gilbert River Watchhouse. The Tablelands Police Patrol Group is approximately 135,000 square kilometres in size, or around 60 per cent the size of Victoria. That includes the Shires of Mareeba, Tablelands, Etheridge and Croydon which each has a significant amount of area to cover. The Etheridge Shire includes Georgetown, Mt Surprise, Einasleigh and Forsayth and covers an area of some 40,000 square kilometres. In 1869, a survey of the area was conducted and gold was discovered in the Gilbert River. By July of that year
at least 3000 men were camped at Gilberton and along the river to its junction with the Percy River. The Gilbert River Police Station was built around this time, to provide a policing response to this thriving region as people travelled west to the Croydon Gold fields. In 1907, the original watchhouse was built and to this day it still stands. When the police station was no longer necessary, the property was sold to the Murphy family who still own it to this day. Officer in Charge of Georgetown Police, Senior Constable Barnes had the recent pleasure of visiting Patsy and her son Brendon to officially re-open the restored watchhouse. Patsy and Brendon contributed their own funds to purchase the timber and iron, and employed a local carpenter to undertake the works. Patsy and Brendon said they wanted to play their part in keeping the history of the area.

THE GIRL ON THE TRAIN
Rachel Watson (Emily Blunt) travels every day by train past the Hipwells' house - a few doors from her own home where her exhusband lives with his new wife and child, imagining their lives. One day she witnesses something shocking and is drawn to finding out what really happened. Review by Louise Keller: With its distinctive internal writing style, Paula Hawkins' best-selling novel offers a challenge for any screenwriter and Erin Cressida Wilson has structured the screenplay relatively faithfully, shifting the action from the outer edges of London to that of New York. But we have little personal connection to the characters they are always kept at arms' length, meaning our investment in them is superficial. Highly successful is the turbulent mood that director Tate Taylor creates, enhanced by ultra tight close ups and propelled by Danny Elfman's dark, claustrophobic music score, although I would have preferred it to have been a little less strident. The opening scene shows Rachel Watson (Emily Blunt) looking out of the window of a speeding train as it passes house after house on the way to its destination. Voice-over narration tells us Rachel's innermost thoughts. Admitting to an overactive imagination, she describes her everyday obsession watching a pretty blonde girl whose name she does not know in one of the houses. This girl epitomises everything Rachel wants. It takes a while to work out exactly who are all the characters and how they fit in with each other - the early sequences are a jigsaw of confusion. Megan (Hayley Bennett) is the blonde girl about which Rachel obsesses as she watches her in intimate situations with a handsome man named Scott (Luke Evans). We also meet Anna (Rebecca Ferguson), another pretty blonde with a baby, who is now married to Rachel's ex husband Tom (Justin Theroux). It doesn't help that Emily Blunt, whose presence usually lights up the screen, spends most of the film in a state of teary angst. The performances are all fine although Blunt's occasional wavering accent is a distraction. Infidelity, jealousy and alcoholism are strong themes as the plot takes hold. We are drawn into the tangled web of all these characters and the more we know, the more sordid things become. There are numerous red herrings and tension builds (with Elfman's music at its most intense) as revelations come to light and the film soars to its dramatic and shocking conclusion.

Be aware of car thieves The State’s peak motoring body has issued a warning about the imminent threat of organised car thieves, following the expected dissolution of the country’s national theft reduction council. RACQ has called on the Palaszczuk Government to urgently reinstate funds for the National Motor Vehicle Theft Reduction Council (NMVTRC), which is due to collapse next week after it failed to secure support from other States.
RACQ’s Paul Turner said the NMVTRC was a national inter-agency body that bridged the divide between different States and their laws, alerting authorities and government officials of rising trends in motor vehicle threat. “Without the NMVTRC there will be no other national body and its demise will take us back to the days of organised crime exploiting the gaps in State law and monitoring,” Mr Turner said. “Prior to its introduction in 1999, Australia had the highest rate of vehicle theft in the developed world. The State’s peak motoring body has today released the list of the nation’s safest and most dangerous used cars on the market. RACQ’s 2016 Buyer’s Guide to Used Car Safety Ratings has examined more than 266 used cars using data from more than seven million real-world crashes across Australia and New Zealand.RACQ Head of Technical and Safety Policy Steve Spalding said there was significant variation in the level of safety within each vehicle category. World-first solar electric cars to be manufactured in Brisbane A new innovation, design and manufacturing hub in Brisbane will see world-first commercial, road registered, custom Australian solar electric cars built in Queensland, Minister for Energy Mark Bailey announced today. Minister Bailey officially opened Clenergy TeamArrow’s new workshop at Macarthur Avenue, Eagle Farm and also revealed the team’s ambitions to have a road-registered, ‘Cruiser Class’ race version on the starting grid of the 2017 Bridgestone World Solar Challenge in Darwin. “Clenergy TeamArrow is one of the most successful Australian solar racing teams of the Bridgestone World Solar Challenge and I’m excited about this new innovation and design hub here in Brisbane,” Mr Bailey said. “The Palaszczuk Government is a strong advocate for renewable energy and a cleaner, greener energy future and I’m pleased to say that Economic Development Queensland has given the home team a flying start
by providing long term access to the Eagle Farm site and workshop facilities.” Mr Bailey also unveiled the design of the new sleek, hitech and aerodynamic vehicle at the Eagle Farm hub with Clenergy Team Arrow’s Cameron Tuesley. Mr Tuesley said they drew inspiration from their extensive experiences crossing Australia’s outback. “We aim to be the first Australian company to manufacture and sell solar electric vehicles and we are proud to be working with energy partners such as Clenergy and Tritium to showcase Australian innovation, science and renewable energy technology to the world,” Mr Tuesley said. “What better stage to launch than the 2017 Bridgestone World Solar Challenge? Our ‘race’ version of our car of the future will
also be the first road-registered solar vehicle to compete in the Challenge.” Bridgestone World Solar Challenge Director Nathan Cayzer said event organisers, South Australian Tourism Commission, expected 2017 to be one of the largest, most innovative fields yet, with record-breaking entry numbers already confirmed. “The Bridgestone World Solar Challenge journey doesn’t end at the finish line and continues to innovate,” Mr Cayzer said.
“By introducing the Cruiser Class for the first time in 2013, we asked competitors to further push themselves to deliver technology that can be applied to real cars, in real conditions – a goal we are closer to as evidenced here today.” 2017 will mark 30 years since a band of pioneers began a 3,000-kilometre adventure across the Australian outback in the inaugural World Solar Challenge. Up to 50 teams from 25 countries are expected in 2017.

The LAND Panama inspections for region WELL RECEIVED: Tablelands councillor Anthony Ball and Dalrymple MP Shane Knuth with stakeholders at last Tuesday’s Navua sedge information day in Malanda.
Landholders school up on sedge FARMERS and landholders from across the Far North have armed themselves with valuable information to fight the spread of Navua sedge. The aggressive weed was the focus of an information day held last Tuesday in Malanda, with about 200 farmers and landholders from across the Tablelands and Cassowary Coast attending. Tablelands Division 3 councillor Anthony Ball praised the turnout on day, which included presentations by Dalrymple MP Shane Knuth and Nufarm Research and Development officer Nicholas Matthews. “It was very well attended with a lot of interest,” Cr Ball said. “The speakers were very informative. The day focused on pasture management, the right and wrong times to spray and identification of the weed. “We covered a lot of bases that will help farmers in the future.” Mr Matthews gave a rundown of the current best practice chemical treatment and the tools available for managing sedge, while Mr Knuth provided an update on the
political fight to attract funding from the State Government. Council also listed what it was doing in terms of funding and resource allocation, provision of wash down bay facilities, sedge identification, mapping and reporting systems. Council is currently chasing an additional $570,000 in funding over three years from the State to combat sedge. The money would be spent on vehicles, quick spray units and the establishment of a dedicated taskforce to eradicate the weed. “I know the State Government’s very well aware of the issue, and through Shane Knuth, we’ve been pushing it on an almost weekly basis,” Cr Ball said. “At the information day, we had councillors there from the Cassowary Coast. The fact that so many people are enquiring and looking into it certainly says to me it isn’t just an isolated weed. It’s affecting a lot of areas and shires and hopefully the State Government is taking note of what we’re doing.” Sedge, which is capable of producing
up to 500 million seeds per hectare, has the potential to reduce grazing and pasture capacity by up to 40 per cent. Cr Ball said the weed had the potential to “significantly impact” the Tablelands’ agricultural industry, which accounted for 30.2 per cent of the local economy. Mt Garnet, Ravenshoe, Topaz and Atherton itself are just some of the towns hit hard by sedge, but there are fears the weed could spread into the region’s “golden triangle” - an area of pristine agricultural farming land between Walkamin, Atherton and Kairi. Dalrymple MP Shane Knuth tabled a petition to parliament last month in support of funding for long-term management of the weed. That includes a Queensland-first trial to eradicate Navua sedge on Tablelands. Cr Ball said residents would have another chance to get the latest on combating sedge at Malanda’s Small Farms Field Day on November 12.

TABLELANDS banana farms will get a visit from Biosecurity Queensland (BQ) officers next month to check for signs of Panama disease. The visit comes after a second Tully farm was cleared by BQ of Panama tropical race 4 last week. Panama TR4 Program Leader Rebecca Sapuppo said the surveillance program would now cover all commercial banana properties in the Far North. “This financial year, the Panama TR4 Program aims to survey any commercial banana farms in Tully, Innisfail, Lakeland and the Tablelands that we have not yet visited,” she said. “Previously, surveillance was conducted only on those properties that had been prioritised for inspection as they had some link to the infested property in Tully.” To date, only one farm in the Tully Valley was confirmed to have been infested by Panama in March last year. The farm, owned by grower Bevan Robson, was to be bought out for $4.5 million by the Australian Banana Growers’ Council. That sale is now expected to go ahead after a nearby Tully farm was cleared of Panama disease following suspicious symptoms late last month. “As we can’t be sure how the disease entered Queensland, surveillance has now extended to all commercial banana farms in the region. This is to further safeguard the industry against Panama disease tropical race 4,” Ms Sapuppo said. “Prompt detection and destruction of infected plants slows down any spread of the disease. Growers’ chances of extending the profitability of their farms is improved if the disease is contained in its early stages.” Tablelands banana growers are urged to schedule a surveillance visit by calling 13 25 23. Electronic message boards advising of surveillance activities will be placed at Walkamin along the Kennedy Highway. Surveillance operations will be weather dependent. For more information about Panama disease, visit www.biosecurity.qld.gov.au

PROPERTY Amaroo extends a warm welcome to all of our wonderful clients who have purchased lots at Karobean. The excitement is building on Karobean Drive as a huge variety of stunning homes are being constructed. There are two stages under construction at present at Amaroo – Jannali and Karobean (the top of Karobean Drive). Anticipated completion is late 2016, with lots are already selling now off the plan. Jannali has 17 lots under construction, five of which are already spoken for. There is a huge amount of interest with our new landowners enjoying the comfort of choosing their favourite lot before they are officially released. Jannali includes lots with ‘The Village’ covenants, from 600m2, perfect for those looking for a smaller low maintenance home and yard. The other lots range from 813m2 up to 1909m2.
Jannali offers the privacy of a cul-de-sac, with some bush surroundings and gully. Karobean has six new lots on offer, ranging from 944m2 to 1345m2. Starting at $109,000 these are located at the top of Karobean Drive and will compliment this already beautiful street. All lots feature generous frontages, plus town water and underground power. Add sealed roads and a family friendly location close to Amaroo Medical and the future Amaroo Village Market Place. Lots are available off the plan to purchase now, with anticipated completion around the end of 2016.

White Chocolate and Pumpkin Truffles
2/3 cup finely grounded Milk Arrowroot Biscuts 1/3 cup pumpkin puree 60g white chocolate, melted 60g cream cheese, softened 1/4 tsp cinnamon (or pumpkin spice) white chocolate for coating
Method
You will be overly sensitive when dealing with your personal life. Don’t expect anyone else to pay your bills for you. You could have a change of heart if an old flame waltzes back into your life. Go out with friends who are positive.
1. In a bowl mix cream cheese, pumpkin puree, cinnamon (or pumpkin pie spice) and melted white chocolate. Stir in grounded cookies and set in the fridge for half an hour. 2. Roll 1 inch balls and place them on parchment paper. Freeze them at least half an hour before coating with chocolate. 3. Melt white chocolate and drop one by one frozen ball in the melted chocolate. Using a fork transfer them onto parchment paper (gently tap off excess chocolate), then put them back in the freezer for 10 mins.

Young G’s blitz Butts A BASKETBALL blitzkrieg by Young G’s has secured their place in the Men’s Summer League grand final after destroying a hapless Ciggy Butts 76-49 last Thursday night. G’s were full of energy from their first quarter, dominating proceedings with their pace, crisp passing and shooting which left Butts on the back foot. Missing inspirational talisman and captain Fabio Nocilla, it was always going to be a tough ask for the Winter League champions, who were left to scrap for points off fouls and the odd lay-up. It was largely the same story in the second quarter, some cheap turnovers costing Butts points despite a valiant HEAD-TO-HEAD: Young G’s captain Tyson Tatti in action against Ciggy solo effort by Christy Perks who kept Butts last Thursday night. his side in the game. SHOWDOWN: Red Devils and Stingrays in their semi-final match last Thursday night.
A CASE of déjà vu struck Stingrays after being forced to endure another nightmarish loss to Red Devils in the Men’s Summer Competition semifinal. Rays were hopeful of bouncing back after a 55-25 thrashing against Devils in their last regular game the week before and started strongly in their rematch. It took Devil’s Clint Cameron to step up, breaking the impasse on the counter with the help of Luke Fresta and brothers Brandon and Layton Osborne to put a dent in a physical first quarter and go 20-8 up. Stingrays simply had no answer in the second and third quarters, fading out badly as Devils continued to extend their lead thanks to some silky smooth passing and shooting to go into the final 10 minutes at 55-26. The onslaught failed to let up in the last quarter, with Layton Osborne hitting a purple patch of form in the dying minutes with double three pointers. Devils captain Andy Harris even made a cameo appearance with two minutes to go, returning from injury in style with a neat two pointer to put the

icing on the cake for his team’s dominant 70-32 win. Devils centre Alex Hodi said a pregame pep talk helped set the scene for the next four quarters. “I just said “Let’s just push it”. To conserve energy, because we only had one sub, I wanted to push for five minutes and hold for five,” he said. “But the boys were feeling confident and they wanted to push the whole quarter for 10 minutes so we just went all the way.” Devils will now face off against Young G’s in the grand final tomorrow night, with Hodi weary of the fast-paced threat the opposition posed. “We’ll be looking to slow that game down,” he said. “They’ve got the likes of Jonah Hastie and Tyson Tatti, all top quality players for their age.” Stingrays centre Norm Fenner said the Devils were simply too hot to handle. “First quarter they pretty much hit all their three pointers which spread our defence out and after that, we were playing catch-up the whole game,” he said.

On your Local shooters marks, mark milestone get set… SHOOTERS from across North Queensland converged on the Atherton Tableland Gun Club for its 25th anniversay shoot last weekend. CAN’T WAIT: Mareeba Rotary Fun Run and Walk coordinator Matt Jacob is raring to go this Sunday.
FITNESS and friendliness will combine at Bicentennial Lakes this Sunday as Mareeba Rotary gets ready to host its inaugural Fun Run and Walk. Event co-ordinator Matt Jacob said the town had never held a fun run before and he wanted to bring people together for a morning of physical – and mental- stimulation. “It’s a real, proper community-focused fun run,” he said. “It also ties in nicely with mental health month…and we don’t need to see too many studies to know that exercise is good for the brain, for your mental health and well-being.” The event will also double as a fundraiser for the Mareeba Friends of the Far North Queensland Hospital Foundation. Mr Jacob said he was hoping for 100 competitors, who will be able to race in open men’s, open women’s and junior divisions. Youngsters can even have a crack in the 1km dash while there will be various prizes up for grabs for everyone on the day. “We’ve got lots of interest not just from the general
community but from personal trainers and schools who are all keen to get on board,” Mr Jacob said. “If you want to be well, you’ve got to eat well, move well and think well.” The fun run will kick off from the Lakes at the clearing just behind Mareeba Swimming Pool before going on a cross-country adventure past Granite Gorge, the Leagues Club, Turf Club, Borzi Park and finishing at Rotary Park along Byrnes St. “We’ve got an amazing resource here in Bicentennial Lakes, it runs nearly the entire length of Mareeba’s main street,” he said. “We just want to get the community out there moving.” To register online, head to the Mareeba Rotary Facebook page and follow the links. Entry is $5 for kids, $10 for adults or $25 for a family. Competitors will need to be at Bicentennial Lakes, located along Keeble and Abbott streets, by 7:30am for an 8am start. For more information, email mattyjacob@gmail.com or call 4092 3556.
Old Bulls gore rivals
THE Mareeba Bulls’ ageing stars showed they still have some fight left with a courageous effort to win the Old Mongrels tournament at Stratford last weekend. The club’s Over 35’s stars had to overcome player injuries, the heat and a tough draw to fight their way through to the grand final and enjoy a comprehensive 4-1 win over Innisfail Cutters in the decider. The Bulls were made to work hard with a 1-0 semi -final win over the Moody Blues, with two wins and only one lost in the group stage. Mareeba lost defenders Lenard Brischetto and Mario Terranova,
plus striker Jose Lopez, to injury. That left the side with just 14 players for the semi-final and final. But oldies never gave up and showed the club’s trademark champion qualities to come out victorious, successfully defending their title. In other news, Tablelands juniors will get a chance to represent their local region in a new-look competition from next year. In addition to regular season games on Saturday, the best talent from the Cairns, Tablelands and Johnstone River districts will play in a rep competition every Sunday. The teams will also go up against

FNQ Heat and compete in boys Under 12, 14 and 16 boys divisions and Under 13 and 15 girls divisions. The decision is a backflip for FNQ Football, who initially announced that Heat teams would play in the regular Saturday competition earlier this month. Mareeba Bulls technical director Alex Srhoj backed the representative competition, labelling it “one of the biggest steps in FNQ Football history” for junior development. “Not only does it offer development for the players, but also for the coaches and also referees in FNQ,” he said.
