MAREEBA State High Schools Gamuchirai Makoti has made it through the zone finals of the Lions Youth of the Year for a second time and will be heading to the district competition next week.

After winning the zone finals of the public speaking competition held in Atherton on Saturday, March 14, Gamu will now be heading down to Townsville to compete in the District final next Saturday.

Gamu went up against students from Atherton State High School, Malanda State High School and St Stephen’s Catholic College culminating in six competitors from six different lions clubs on the Tablelands.

MSHS Gifted and Talented Co-ordinator Stefanie Prizmic was proud of Gamu’s achievement and is confident she will perform well.

After participating in the District finals Gamu will then be given the chance to proceed to the state and then national finals if she wins in Townsville.

Gamu is excited to be competing in the district finals once more.

“The whole experience is really great, so winning for the second time is a real honour,” she said.

“Winning last year gave me a lot of experience so I knew what I was getting into and what I needed to do to perform well.

“It’s always great to meet new kids and to speak on a platform about an issue you are passionate about.”

Rowena makes second round ROWENA Petersen is now one step closer to her goal of claiming the title of Miss World Australia after winning the QLD Preliminary Finals.

The Gold Coast held the recent preliminary finals where Rowena went up against other Miss World Australian hopefuls; Rowena was announced as the judges choice as well as talking out the top spot for her charity.

Her charity; Variety the Children’s Charity assists children who are sick, disadvantaged or have special needs, Rowena won top spot for the Charity with her raising the most money

out of all the contestants.

Rowena was excited but nervous to be competing against other Miss World Australia hopefuls.

“It was very nerve racking but it was a great experience,” she said.

“It was great to meet so many likeminded and passionate young women.

“I really hope the next round of the pageant goes ahead.”

The Miss Universe Australia pageant will be held in June in Melbourne, the winner of this pageant will then represent Australia in the Miss Universe Pageant 2020.

Mareeba’s Rowena Petersen has made it through the preliminary finals on her journey to become Miss Universe Australia.

COVID shutdowns – closure of principal places of social gatherings in Australia ON Monday pubs, clubs, gyms, casinos and cinemas across Queensland were told to shut down.

On Sunday night Prime Minister Scott Morrison announced the imminent closure of pubs, clubs, casinos and churches across Australia to try to stop the spread of coronavirus.

Mr Morrison social distancing was “our biggest weapon” to dealing with the spread of the deadly coronavirus.

“The failure of the public to do that will put people at risk,” Mr Morrison said, after a National Cabinet meeting of all Australian states and territories.

“What we saw was a disre-

gard of those social distancing practices. This sent a very clear message… that the social distancing practices are not being observed as they should be.”

“So, unfortunately, because guidelines can’t be followed and for public health reasons we now need to take further action which shuts those gatherings down.”

All pubs, registered and licensed clubs, and licensed premises inside hotels and pubs will close.

In those venues, accommodation facilities can continue to operate as normal but with good hygiene and social distancing measures in place.

Entertainment venues such as theatres, cinemas, casinos and nightclubs will also be forced to shut their doors.

Restaurants and cafes will be restricted to takeaway or home delivery only, while indoor sporting venues, gyms and churches and places of worship will also close.

Shopping centres and supermarkets are not subject to the new restrictions.

The PM has warned that even harsher restrictions could be on the cards if Australians failed to observe proper social distancing measures in public places such as beaches and shopping centres.

He pleaded with the community to do the right thing.

"As we’ve just made very clear, that when that doesn’t occur, then more dramatic measures will have to be introduced," he said.

"I would simply ask Australians to be calm and exercise some sensible judgement."

The Prime Minister confirmed schools would remain open until the end of term and would reopen after the break, pending medical advice.

Coronavirus travel ban may lead to labour shortages on Australian farms LOCAL Framers are worried that global travel restrictions could create labour shortages on local farms; amid growing concern harvests could be lost due to the spread of the coronavirus.

Growers groups say there are no current supply or demand issues for fresh produce. But farmers are looking at a looming labour deficit in an industry that is reliant on seasonal, short-term and foreign workers.

It’s believed that backpackers make up 95 per cent of the workforce on some Queensland farms.

Queensland Agriculture Minister Mark Furner has written to his federal counterpart, David Littleproud, asking the Australian government to change visa requirements to keep backpack-

ers in jobs.

Mr Furner said changes should be treated "as a matter of urgency" to ensure farmers had enough staff "to harvest crops and feed people through this unprecedented outbreak".

AUSVEG, the industry representative for Australia’s vegetable growers, is supporting calls from the fresh produce industry for the government to immediately extend the visas of vital foreign workers to ensure that growers have the workforce they need to supply fresh fruit and vegetables to Australian consumers.

Makers if they continue to work in agriculture.

“International workers who came via the Seasonal Workers Program, Pacific Labour Scheme and Working Holiday Makers Program were a vital source of labour in Australian farm sheds and fields," said AUSVEG National Manager – Public Affairs Tyson Cattle.

Kiribati residents are calling for the government to follow in the footsteps of Marshall Islands and ban all international travel to reduce the risk of the virus spreading there. Kiribati is one of Australia’s biggest suppliers of labour under the federal governments Pacific Labour Scheme (PLS) In Vanuatu the caretaker Prime Minister Charlot Salwai

announced the suspension of the labour mobility scheme to Australia and New Zealand and a reduction in international flights into the country.

President of the Mareeba Chamber of Commerce and Chairman of the Mareeba District Fruit and Vegetable Growers Association Joe Moro also agrees that it’s too early to tell what impact Covid-19 may have on Tablelands farmers, “At this stage there have been no export implications but there may be some labour supply issues, as less backpackers come to Australia to work and travel” he said.

“Covid-19 will certainly have an impact but as we can’t tell how long this is going to last, it’s hard to predict the long term effects on growers.”

Help for small businesses amid COVID-19 crisis

SMALL businesses devastated by the coronavirus crisis may not have to repay their loans for the next six months.

The CEO of the Australian Banking Association (ABA) Anna Bligh has announced a new scheme for small business owners struggling to stay open amid the current COVID-19 crisis.

According to Ms Bligh “Small businesses will be able to defer loan repayments for six months” "Small businesses can rest assured that if they need help they will get it," she said.

"Banks will make sure this deferral available to any small business that is struggling through this crisis, but business owners will need to approach their banks, as the banks will not be reaching out directly to their customers" Ms Bligh said the banks were yet to see households going into mortgage stress as a result of COVID-19 but would reassess their approach if the situation changed.

"If we start to see any other critical need … that's something that we will need to look at," she said.

She said the pandemic was causing “devastating effects across the economy” but that small business was being particularly hard hit.

Banks are now working on

the details of the small business package and could start rolling it out as early as this week.

“Businesses are doing it very tough … but rest assured, banks have got your back,” Ms Bligh said.

“This package is for small businesses which today have the most urgent and critical need."

It’s estimated that Small businesses employ around five million Australians.

Ms Bligh said the banks had been in discussions with Treasurer Josh Frydenberg and regulators ahead of the announcement.

"We are now in extraordinary and very difficult times," she said.

"This is a moment when the country needs to see all of its institutions working together cooperatively and in the national interest."

Soon after the announcement, NAB said home loan customers could pause repayments for up to six months. The bank has also cut its fixed-rate home loans by 60 basis points.

It comes after the Reserve Bank cut interest rates to a record low 0.25 per cent on Thursday and announced extraordinary measures to help prevent a coronavirus-driven recession.

MSC urges calmness WHILE the first case of COVID-19 was confirmed in the Far North last week, Mayor of the Mareeba Shire Tom Gilmore is asking residents to remain calm.

“We are a strong and resilient community, and together we will get through these uncertain times. Council has plans in place to ensure essential services are not impacted should there be an outbreak of the virus in the Shire” he said.

“Our disaster management team is meeting regularly and is in constant contact with Queensland Health and other agencies.

We will continue to monitor this very active situation and follow advice from the State and Federal Governments to help slow the spread of this virus.”

Mayor Gilmore also said the Chief Executive Officer and senior management would continue to meet and identify issues and potential risks to the community and the organisation. “For now, it’s business as usual,” Cr Gilmore said.

“We will continue to monitor the situation as it unfolds, and we are following advice from health authorities.

“We have put measures in place to ensure essential services such as waste, water and sewerage will not be compromised,” he said.

Non-essential services including minor road works and vegetation maintenance may be delayed if staff and resources become limited or prioritised elsewhere.

As of Monday 23 March 2020, Shire Library branches will only offer essential borrowing services in the branch, all other services and activities will be suspended indefinitely.

“We will be introducing recommended social distancing and hygiene practises at all our libraries to prevent the spread of the virus,” Cr Gilmore said.

“This is an unpredictable fast-moving situation and we are actively monitoring and putting business continuity plans

in place to deal if and when the situation escalates,” Cr Gilmore said.

Operating hours of the Kuranda Visitor Information Centre will also be reduced from Monday for the safety of volunteers, visitors and the general public.

Prime Minister Scott Morrison on Sunday announced several measures aimed at slowing the spread of COVID-19, which included the banning all non-essential gatherings of more than 500 people.

Following the Government’s advice, Council has decided to cancel the Kuranda Easter event and the Great Wheelbarrow Race.

“The health and wellbeing of the community, our volunteers and staff is a priority and Council has taken appropriate action to reduce the spread of the virus,” Cr Gilmore said.

THE Tablelands Regional Council’s Continuity Leadership Team (CLT) met last week to discuss the current Covid-19 situation, identify critical Council services and functions, propose trigger points and associated actions, review business continuity plans, discuss human resource issues, and make a number of decisions.

"Our priority is the health and wellbeing of our staff and community, and the provision of essential facilities and services like water and waste," said CLT Chair Justin Commons.

"We are mindful of our requirement to provide a safe working environment for our staff and our duty of care to people using our facilities.

"In the workplace we are implementing separation of staff integral to the continuation of essential services and avoiding physical meetings and gather-

ings.

"We have other plans in place for ensuring essential services continue unimpeded.

"We are guided by the federal and state government’s planning and response to this pandemic and the community should follow this lead.

"Queensland Health is the state’s lead agency and are providing regular information on their website and social media.

"Follow their advice on hygiene and social distancing to do all you can to flatten the curve of the pandemic.

"To meet these hygiene and social distancing requirements we are asking the community to make use of our online and phone services including for payments and customer requests.

"If you must come into our customer service centres, adhere to Queensland Health’s advice

on social distancing, hygiene and wear a face mask if you are symptomatic.

"Also, if Covid-19 is affecting your ability to pay your rates, get in touch with our rates team to see how we can alleviate the situation.

"Hygiene and social distancing measures have resulted in many events, activities and services across the region being cancelled, postponed or reducing their hours.

"The Yungaburra Triathlon, Maize Festival, Tolga Races and Anzac Day commemorations have been cancelled and the future of other community events is at the discretion of event organisers according to state and federal advice.

"We are doing our best to keep track of these changes and have set up a page on the Council website with event, activity and service status information.”

The group works with Government decision makers to discuss required assistance in a coordinated manner. We keep the community informed with timely and accurate information. As Mayor I will have the respon-

sibility of being Chairperson of this group. I will lead by example, and expect the same from my fellow Councillors - to follow protocols, be sensible and considerate in our actions.

As a matter of principle, I think it would be prudent to freeze rates for a year to enable the electorate to consolidate their own finances. TRC will just have to work smarter with less revenue. It may be that tourism may be loser in the allocation of funds in the short term. There is no need for a $5m spend on a nice to have project that has no customers!!

We may not see tourism pick up for years. We must concentrate on infrastructure and industry to maintain any standard of service on the Tablelands.

In order to pursue jobs for our future generations and aged care facilities amongst other industries, we must know where our finances and perception of council really is.

It will be a critical part of the 20/21 budget discussions and all councillors need to be fully conscious of the impact of all actions but be reassured we will do all within our power to lessen the impact on all aspects on our way of life within the shire.

No more how to vote cards to be handed out on E-day

CANDIDATES and their helpers in Queensland’s local government elections have been directed to stop handing out how-to-vote cards and flyers amid the COVID-19 crisis.

Local Government Minister Stirling Hinchliffe said under new powers introduced in Parliament this week, the Electoral Commission of Queensland had issued the directive to all candidates to find other ways to display their how-to-vote information.

“Use traditional electionsize signs, put them on a table so voters can help themselves, print it on a t-shirt – there are plenty of ways to get the message across without having to get close to people,” he said.

“Let’s face it – it’s 2020 and our candidates are a pretty savvy lot who can use social media and emails.

“The Directive also applies to other election material, including fliers, leaflets and voter information cards.

“And always adhere to Queensland Health guidelines.”

The Directive comes as the State’s Chief Health Officer Dr Jeannette Young reiterated it was still safe to vote in the council elections on 28 March.

“The risk of contracting COVID-19 at a polling location is low,” Dr Young has advised the ECQ. “People will be frequently entering and exiting the environment, spending little time in static close contact, which reduces the risk of spread of COVID-19.

“I appreciate the measures being proposed by Electoral Commission Queensland as

they should address the risk of community transmission of COVID-19 while allowing important electoral processes to continue.”

Make your vote count VOTING is compulsory in Australia and voting correctly is just as important. Voting is an opportunity to have your say and help shape where you call home.

The Electoral Commission of Queensland (ECQ) provides voting assistance to help you have your say at the ballot box.

To vote on election day, firstly find your nearest polling booth location where you can cast your vote. The booths will be open from 8am to 6pm on election day.

Once you arrive head to the issuing officer table where an election official will verify

your identity before giving you your ballot paper/s.

After that it's time to cast your vote in private. You'll be directed to a voting booth where you can cast your ballot in private. It's important to read the instructions on your ballot paper before you vote.

In this Saturday's local government elections you must vote for one (1) mayor and six (6) councillors from 1 to 6 in any order.

Once you have finalised your vote place your ballot paper in ballot box provided as you leave.

Polling officials will be available to provide assis-

tance should you have any questions.

Counting commences at 6pm on election night, the preliminary count of polling day votes, postal votes and early voting starts.

Voting is compulsory for all Queenslanders over the age of 18. If you don’t vote, you may receive a fine.

Elections still going ahead

IN response to the global coronavirus pandemic, Queensland now has new laws to maximise public safety, minimise public health risks and maintain democratic processes for upcoming local government elections.

Local Government Minister Stirling Hinchliffe said the Public Health and Other Legislation Amendment Bill allowed the Government and the Electoral Commission of Queensland to better respond to the latest expert advice as it emerges.

The latest expert medical advice is that there is no need to change the date for the local government elections or the byelections.

“We don’t take these steps lightly,” the Minister said.

“Local government plays an essential role in delivering services and supporting communities, and we need to ensure these

needs are being met.

“We will always listen to the latest expert medical advice and act on that advice.”

The amendments mean the ECQ will be able to give directions about significant issues, including: • how-to-vote cards and canvassing at polling booths; • flexibility around postal and telephone voting; and • options around the actual election date.

Local Government Association of Queensland CEO Greg Hallam welcomed the Government’s commitment to the March 28 elections but acknowledged the extraordinary circumstances.

“We continue to work in collaboration with the Government throughout this evolving and challenging period for all sectors,” he said.

People are encouraged to take advantage of pre-polling with early voting centres remaining open until 9pm on some nights.

Around 270,000 people have already cast a vote at pre-poll and 540,000 people have applied for a postal vote.

In addition, the ECQ is encouraging electors that are more vulnerable to COVID-19, including Queenslanders aged 60 and over, to vote early between 9am and 11am each day.

Additional ECQ staff will be available to provide support for vulnerable electors during the voting process.

I have strong financial and business background having run my own business and been a treasurer on boards, including recently QITE. I believe in openness and frankness and will robustly represent Division 4 in a new TRC. What’s one thing TRC can do better?

Trust by the Tablelands community in the present TRC is currently very low and the new Council needs to go back to the people to repair the strained relationship. The best outcomes are when people understand what is happening and feel that they have had the opportunity to have input.

I was briefly a member of the ALP in 1983 but did not renew my membership. I have had no political affiliations since that time. Party politics have no place in Local Government.

Do you think NQ should be its own state?

It is hard to envisage that NQ Statehood would improve any of the problems the Tablelands

I am proactive.I will focus on processes such as water, roads, rubbish and rates. I have had a successful business for 13 years and understand the importance of getting the foundations right.

I will also encourage economic growth and development within the region so we can thrive rather than survive.

Council must maintain and upgrade existing infrastructure legacies left to them from previous councils and create a comprehensive maintenance program that can be followed, added to and improved on by councils following in their footsteps.

I’ve never been a member of a political party and believe that local councillors are there to serve the community they represent and should not be aligning themselves with political parties as council need to maintain a relationship with whichever state or federal government is in power at the time.

If there’s enough support shown for us to become an independent state there should be a plebiscite to gauge whether people support or oppose it.

This would lead to a state referendum, we have to be aware that this would add yet another layer of government bureaucracy and cost to the taxpayer.

To my fellow Shire Residents, Dr John C Maxwell says, “You don’t overcome challenges by making them smaller, but by making yourself bigger”. By “bigger” Maxwell means, improving your skillset, your mindset or your behaviour. I have always tried to make myself bigger. We are facing challenging times at present and it is important to remember that we (our shire) have weathered things before (collapse of the tobacco industry, threats, recession, amalgamation, biosecurity de-amalgamation), we have stayed the course, worked hard and survived, in fact, I believe, we have flourished. The global pandemic is only in its infancy, let’s hope that people make themselves “bigger” and start to employ sense and resilience. And in the interim we need strong, focused leaders to guide the way, to set the tone and to advocate for those who can’t speak up for themselves – I believe that I am that leader for our shire.

This election campaign has taught me that residents need more information about the workings of local government and the need for greater transparency from our Council. If elected Mayor I will operate with honesty, integrity and transparency. I believe in consultation, collaboration and communication – these practices underpin good governance.

I have acquired many leadership skills in my 40+ years in education, and observed from my four years as councillor, that these skills were transferable from public service in schools to serving my community. I follow procedure and policy, take due diligence seriously and am prepared to make the hard decisions. When you serve your community, you are called upon to put aside your personal agenda in favour of the greater good, you must vote upon and uphold regulations that may not align with your preference; it is vital that you are always professional, ethical and open to public scrutiny. I will uphold these expectations.

I have learned that our community has a big heart, that we support each other, that we all want our shire to grow in population, in popularity and in posture. For that to happen it is important that people vote for the candidates who will be honest, ethical and consistent. It is important that people vote for the person who they know will do the job, make the hard decisions and keep on keeping on. I am that person. I will work with the people you elect as councillors and we will have a united and focused council that reflects the diversity and character of our community.

Some other things that I have learned is that it is important that our young people, our children, feel secure that we have a plan, that we are confident of our direction and that we lead through example and with words of encouragement. For the young families who have chosen our shire as your home, look at the strong families who have come before you, who are today the backbone of our community – have faith that you are in the right place. To our business community and our industry associations, your unity during adversity is your strength, your passion and your preparedness to diversify and try new things is what sets our shire apart from other locations and agricultural regions. Our retirees have worked so hard, invested of themselves and should feel pride at all they have accomplished – your blood, sweat and tears have been worth it. I am very grateful to everyone in our shire.

I promise that I will campaign strongly for the things that our residents are worried about – roads, water, liveability, business confidence, financial security and growth. I am not afraid of hard work. I am not afraid of ministers or their advisors. I owe no loyalty to anyone but the people of our shire and I will fight for our shire.

My final undertaking is that I will always act professionally, that I will represent the shire to my utmost ability. I am fiercely passionate about Mareeba Shire, vote for me and I will get things done.

Missing WW2 crew honoured with memorial plaque

The great Aussie myths IT was great to see Australia pulling together for the recent bushfires and floods with Celeste Barber raising over 50 million dollars. It was also great to see people donating blankets, food, water etc.

But how disappointing it is to see people now punching on over toilet paper amid the Coronavirus outbreak, last time I checked toilet paper wasn’t one of the five main food groups.

Currently, there’s a disease that is spreading across Australia far more quickly than Covid-19, and it’s called selfishness.

It’s been heartbreaking to see little old ladies wandering down the toilet paper aisle and seeing nothing but empty shelving.

I’ve seen an older man who once fought overseas for Australia reduced to tears because he couldn’t find anything on his meagre shopping list.

I’m starting to think that Australian qualities like mateship, a fair go for all and sacrifice are just jingoistic myths.

The supermarkets have announced that they will open early to allow pensioners and people with disabilities to shop an hour more.

Having an elderly hour isn’t something we should be proud of, it’s something we should be ashamed of and I can’t believe it has come to

this.

There was also a report of a blind lady in Melbourne who has had toilet paper stolen from her basket. Right now I’m ashamed to be Australian.

But there have been some glimmers of hope, like 6-year-old Addyson Blain who took it upon herself to giveaway toilet paper that she bought with her own pocket money to the less fortunate in Mareeba.

I’ve also heard of a local landlord who dropped the rent so the business leasing his property could continue to trade.

It’s examples like this that we all need to follow.

Right now we are more dependent on each other than ever before.

You may say that you’re putting yourself into self-isolation for the greater good, but when you were shopping, did you think about that pensioner that can’t access his medicine or how about the parents that can’t find nappies or the single mum who can’t find pads and tampons?

Just like the bushfires this should be the time the binds us and unifies us, not divides us.

Members of the Vietnam Veterans and Veterans Motorcycle club have donated $500 to go towards the making of a memorial plaque for a missing WWII bomber crew from the Mareeba Aerodrome.

A ROYAL Australian Air Force (RAF) crew who went missing from the Mareeba Aerodrome in WW11 will be getting a memorial plaque dedicated to their memory at the Aerodrome.

The plaque will be honouring the memory of the crew; Sgt. John Pittman, Sgt. Charles Hucker, Sgt. Horace Shying and Sgt. Edward Jones who have been missing since June 12, 1942 after they flew out of the Mareeba air strip for an anti-

submarine patrol off the eastern coast of Queensland.

A $500 donation has been gifted to the Mareeba Military Muster Committee towards the $2500 dollar plaque by the Vietnam Veterans and Veterans Motorcycle Club (VVMC).

This donation along with others from the families of the missing crew has pushed the total to $1500.

VVMC Member Nathan Shingles saw this donation as an

The company has invested significantly in the large scale bagasse-fired cogeneration power plant that has been constructed at the Tablelands Mill, which, upon the completion of the commissioning phase that is currently underway, will produce 24 megawatts of electricity (or enough to power 26,280 homes, the entire population of the Tablelands region).

“If we continue to experience good weather, this year is shaping up to be one of the better years for the sugar cane industry in Australia, particularly given that other sugar growing regions in the world are now experiencing drought that is leading to a supply deficit that will result in world sugar price increases.

Good hand hygene

The world is told "wash your hands with soap and water to kill the Carona Virus germs" but an eminent surgeon on ABC TV said that it is not enough and we need to scrub our hands. That is what they do because simple washing leaves germs behind. If it's good enough for surgeons it is good for us all.

Personally I have noticed how dirty nails stay after simple washing of our hands and it is well known that nails harbour infection. So at this crucial time perhaps nail cleaning should be advised plus the habit of keeping them short will help. Long nails and scratching can damage the skin and infect our blood stream with infections too.

Reply to Kuranda Thank you to the allegations people of TRC I wish to address allegations I would like to thank the people of the TRC region, particularly division 6 for the opportunity to

velopment in Kuranda “against the wishes” of a majority of the community.

I consider that my fellow Councillors and I had the professionalism and principle to approve town planning applications which in all aspects complied with the rules established under the Queensland Planning Act, the Far North Queensland Regional Plan, State Planning Policy and the Mareeba Shire Planning Scheme. A number of Councillors did not vote in favour of the applications; they never do, but have the benefit of knowing that the outcome will be an approval so can demur without risk of costing rate payers. I wonder if they would be quite so reticent to uphold the law if the consequences were different and if this will be their approach if elected.

Each appeal (of a council decision) to the Planning Court costs the rate payers. These are not costs subsidised by state of federal coffers. Those who have failed to support these applications did so in the full knowledge that had the application been refused by Council, it would have

proceeded to the Planning Court at the cost of hundreds of thousands of dollars to the Mareeba Shire Council ratepayers and the Council would have lost, simply because there was no justification whatsoever to refuse those applications.

The position of Councillor of Mareeba Shire is not easy and often difficult decisions have to be made. It takes a person of courage and principle to reject bullying, harrassment and threats by people with the hypocracy of a lynch mob who, for one reason or another disagree with the substance of the application being considered.

It’s very easy to vote no when there is zero risk; but does that speak of integrity?

I am Danny Bird and I’m running as a councillor for the MSC in the upcoming elections.

Besides prior council experience on the Flinders Shire at Hughenden. I have worked in several industries including, livestock, local road transport, aviation, heavy machinery, mining, roadworks and the local agricultural industry.

This gives me a wide range of experience to bring to the table as a councillor.

In brief my policies are. 1.

Youth Crime, this needs to be put to bed for once and all. Now is the time, it will require street level monitoring and modification if not delivering positive results.

2. Aged Care, we need to plan for the next 10 years plus.

While not wholly a council issue, it is a community issue. We will all need some type of aged care in time.

3. Water Security of supply, at present, our farmers don’t have that. They employ 15000 people a year.Also add in a growing population. We need to top up Tinaroo or build more dams to add to the irrigation channel.

4. Shire Growth, council needs to assist where possible

small business to grow and expand, encourage investment.

This will underpin our local economy and provide employment and financial sequrity.

5. Roads, Rates,Rubbish , basically maintain costs to an affordable level while improving as we can.

There are many other issues to address, eg, getting more local contractors shire work and getting through the COVID 19 crisis.

Maybe council could keep rates at the same level for this year, to help us recover. The next 4 years will be crucial in getting the agenda correct, to deliver positive outcomes over the next 10 to 15 years.

The council needs experienced, commonsense people on board for the long haul.

I want to help make our shire a better place to live in and raise a family. I am not attending the pre-polling booths due to COVID 19, sorry.

If you vote me in, I will listen to you and back you, for the long haul.

Anzac Avenue bridge upgrade CLUB NEWS THE John Doyle Bridge on Anzac Avenue is set to undergo a major upgrade to reinstate the bridge’s 44-tonne capacity.

A council spokesperson said while the bridge will remain closed to all vehicular traffic during the construction phase, it was essential to maintain pedestrian access for residents.

“Council considered several alternatives for pedestrian management during construction including putting in a temporary footbridge for all-abilities access

on the downstream side of the bridge,” he said.

“This means residents will still be able to walk, run, cycle and cross the Baron River on mobility scooters throughout the delivery of the project.”

A condition report for the John Doyle Bridge was received

by Council in 2017 recommending that a temporary load restriction of 5 tonnes and a speed limit of 50km/hr be implemented immediately until the superstructure of the bridge was repaired

or upgraded.

During the construction phase, the bridge will remain closed to all vehicular traffic. A Council spokesperson said motorists will expect traffic delays and there will be detours put in place to get to and from the CBD from the eastern side of town.

“Council is currently finalising the traffic management plans regarding the closure of the John Doyle Bridge and this information will be released shortly.

“Residents can be assured

that Council is doing everything possible to minimise disruption and keep the flow of traffic while this project is being carried out."

Works are scheduled to commence after the wet season, once the height of the river is approximately three metres below the bridge. This is to allow for scaffolding erection and the inclusion of a pedestrian bridge and will take approximately 95 working days to complete.

Amid coronavirus outbreak the Drive-in is open NOW that all entertainment venues and events are closing down it looks as though Australia’s last few remaining drive-in theatres are experiencing a surge in interest.

Traditional cinemas are off the table due to increased social distancing during the coronavirus outbreak and not being allowed to have more than 100 people in a theatre at a time.

Just last week The Munro theatre in Babinda announced that they were temporarily closed until further notice to assist in minimising the spread of coronavirus.

It’s believed that there are less than 20 Drive-in theatres still operating across Australia.

The Mareeba Drive opened in 1960 and has been entertaining locals under star filled skies since then.

Owner and Manager Raelene Newell (pictured) said business is only just starting to pick up after the wet season.

“Wet season kills us, it’s been very quiet, we haven’t been making any money.”

But Raelene says there are advantages to going to the Drivein during the Covid-19 outbreak.

“The Drive-in is an open space so it’s a lot safer, you get two movies cheaper than one at a cinema and according to government regulations we can still operate and have up to 500 people because we are outdoors” “You get to sit in your own

car and not next a complete stranger” In America some Drive-ins have seen patronage double while multiplex cinema complexes are closing down due to the Covid-19 scare.

Although Raelene admits that the current virus scare has had a downside to her business “We have been having problems get-

ting toilet paper for our customers, last weekend we had people stealing toilet paper from our bathrooms.”

“But apart from that the Drive-in is a welcome relief for families and adults looking for a safe place away from their house, because you’ve got to be in your own car.”

How wonderful it is to sit and listen to the youth of today speak about things they are passionate about.

This is what happened at the annual Mareeba Lions Youth of the Year recently.

Students from St Stephens and Mareeba State High School participated in the event delivering a prepared speech on a topic of their choice and speaking to two impromptu questions. There is so much said about juvenile offenders these days but the majority of our children are intelligent, passionate, educated, responsible young adults, a credit to themselves, their parents and their schools.

All participants are winners for having a go at what can be a tough competition. The Mareeba Lions Youth of the Year and public speaker for 2020 is Mareeba State High School student Gamuchirai Makoti.

Our country has endured drought, fires, floods and now COVID19. The Australian Lions Foundation has been accepting donations from Lions Clubs and the public for distribution to those affected by natural disaster.

To date $2,213,412 has been raised and $999,252.00 distributed.

Initial support provided has included food, clothing, water, accommodation, fuel, stock fodder, water tanks, and other essential items to help individuals restart.

The focus now for many areas is on recovery and re-

building. To date, we have seen disbursements covering equipment for clearing and re-establishing property boundaries, community infrastructure such as playgrounds and park rebuilding.

With Lions all of the donations received are delivered to the victims. Nothing is withheld.

Another shipment of used spectacles has been sent \ away for recycling. The collection of used glasses is an ongoing project of Lions.

Please recycle this valuable resource which ends up helping underprivileged people from developing countries.

During the period 1st July to 31st December, 2019 approximately 195,000 pairs of glasses have been shipped from our recycling centre to developing countries.

Although membership of Lions is by invitation you are invited to enquire about joining this great international humanitarian organisation. It is not hard to become a Lion.

2020 NAPLAN cancelled NAPLAN will not proceed in 2020. Education Ministers met on Friday to discuss the evolving COVID-19 situation and the implications for schools and have decided that NAPLAN testing will not proceed for 2020.

The NAPLAN test window was scheduled to be held from May 12-22. All Education Ministers acknowledge and

thank all of our school leaders, our teachers and support staff for the essential work they do every day educating our children and young people, particularly during these challenging times. They are all playing a vital role in managing the response to COVID-19.

Education Ministers reiterated that the National Cabinet has agreed, on the advice of the

chief health and medical officers, that “pre-emptive closure of schools are not proportionate or effective as a public health intervention to prevent community transmission of COVID-19 at this time.”

Project funding helps promote art and culture A REPORT tabled by Mareebs Shire Council last week highlighted the positive outcomes from several community projects funded by the Queensland Government’s Regional Arts Development Fund (RADF).

Seven community projects funded through the RADF community grant 2018/19 round aimed to build local cultural capacity, cultural innovation and community pride through a range of arts, cultural and heritage activities.

A council spokesperson said Council’s local priorities for last year’s round were cultural tourism and youth arts engagement,

and the results and feedback were very positive.

“Overall the latest RADF community grant round resulted in 163 residents participating in arts and cultural activities with more than 1200 attendees at events and performances,” he said.

“The program contributed to the employment of 17 arts and cultural workers and activated 32 volunteers in arts and cultural projects.”

The decision to not proceed with NAPLAN in 2020 also means that the scheduled testing of the NAPLAN Online platform, known as the Coordinated Practice Test (CPT), will not proceed.

Ministers acknowledge the work that departments and schools have undertaken in preparation for the anticipated

CPT which was due to commence next week on 23 March.

Education departments and systems will continue to closely monitor health advice and work with schools to ensure appropriate support for students and staff as the response to COVID-19 develops.

Parents urged to take up driving lessons THE State’s peak motoring body has urged supervisors of learners to brush up on their driving skills, after new research found parents became better teachers after taking a lesson with an accredited driving instructor.

“It may have been quite some time since some parents sat their own driving test and rules may have changes, so it’s the best way to ensure you are passing on safe driving habits to the next generation of motorists,” Ms Ritchie said.

“A survey of parents who took up the Keys2Drive opportunity found two-thirds actually incorporated information and techniques from the lesson into their own driving behaviour.”

Ms Ritchie said parents played a crucial role in their children becoming safe drivers.

“We know parents are the main supervisors for more than 90 percent of learner drivers and access to professional training can be cost prohibitive for some people,”

she said.

“This program ensures everyone is getting the best

advice and techniques for making safer Queensland drivers.”

urgent action to ease the burden of transport costs on households as many Queenslanders face financial hardship due to the impact of coronavirus.

RACQ Head of Public Policy Rebecca Michael called for a freeze on the cost of vehicle registration, discounted public transport and a reduction in stamp duty to deliver relief.

“We urge the Queensland Government to follow the lead of the West Australian Government, where for the first time in 16 years, an increase on all household fees would be frozen until at least July 2021,” Dr Michael said.

“RACQ’s Transport Costs Survey shows households in Queensland pay an average of $1,320 each year for registration across all vehicles.

“Transport is our biggest weekly expense outside of paying our rent or mortgage

and doing the groceries.

“The State Budget is coming down next month and we believe that is the Government’s opportunity to provide economic relief to Queenslanders."

Dr Michael said the State Government must reduce the cost of public transport for

Queenslanders who currently spend more than $800 each year to get around.

“Transport is essential to accessing employment, education and health. In these times of economic and social uncertainty, we need an affordable and efficient transport system more than ever.”

Successful day for schools at inaugural memorial cup

The inaugural Geoff Hoad Memorial Cup was hosted at the Atherton International Club Football Fields on Friday, March 13 and saw schools across the Tablelands attending...

THE schools 9-a-side Soccer Gala Day was introduced this year to honour Geoff’s memory while paying tribute to his vast contribution and the pride, passion and dedication he had for the game of Soccer.

Geoff’s wife Amanda, sister Lorraine and sons Brayden and Jackson were in attendance on the day and on hand to present the Geoff Hoad Memorial Cups to the Champion Winning Schools.

58 skillful and close competition games of soccer were played on Friday. 19 teams and just under 200 students from Atherton State School, Dimbulah State School, Mutchilba State School, St Anthony’s School Dimbulah, Malanda State School, Ravenshoe State School, Millaa Millaa State School, St Joseph’s School Atherton, Tolga State School, Atherton State High School, Malanda State High School and Mareeba State High School participated in the competition.

The grand final of the Senior Boys division was contested between Mareeba SHS and the Malanda SHS Team 2.

In a game that showcased great skill; the grand final ended in a tie with the scores locked at 1 goal all. For and against needed to be calculated to de-

termine the winning team which was revealed to be the Malanda SHS Team 2. Player of the Final was awarded to Mareeba SHS student Saurav Sapkota.

The Intermediate division final was contested between the teams from Atherton SHS and Mareeba SHS. Both teams had performed exceptionally well throughout the day, however the fast finishing Mareeba team was able to come out on top with a final score of 3 goals to 2. Dylan Perkes from Mareeba SHS was awarded the Player of the Final.

The Junior Boys competition culminated with the Malanda SS and Ravenshoe SS teams fighting it out for the champions’ title.

In another close action-packed game, the grand final resulted in a 1-1 all draw. For and against calculations awarded the champions title to the Ravenshoe SS team. Player of the Final was awarded to Jeremiah Michael of the Malanda SS team.

The Junior Mixed Division featured the highest number of teams, which meant all teams participated in a round robin competition playing each opposing team once throughout the day. After 9 rounds of fiercely contested competition games the Tolga State School Team 2 was crowned the Winning Team with

24 points. Runner-Up Team was awarded to Tolga State School Team 1 with 22 points. Coaches Choice for the Player of the Division was awarded to Royce Cummings from Atherton State School Team 3.

Best and Fairest Awards were awarded to a player from each division: Senior Boys Division: Riley Jones (Malanda State High School Team 2) Intermediate Division: Hayden Shearer (Mareeba State High School) Junior Boys Division: Brayden Thomson (St Joseph’s School Atherton) and Junior Mixed Division: Nathan Daley (Millaa Millaa State School) Sportsmanship Awards were presented to: Senior Boys Division: Cody Vonarx (Atherton State High School) Intermediate Division: Steven Young (Mareeba State High School) Junior Boys Division: Dayuan (Ravenshoe State School) and Junior Mixed Division: Charlotte Prange (Atherton State School) The Geoff Hoad Memorial Cup Trophy is awarded to the school that yields the best

overall result from the tally of their school’s results in all divisions of the competition. This year saw an extremely tight finish for both cups/trophies with Ravenshoe SS being crowned the Primary School Champion School for 2020 while Mareeba SHS took out the honours claiming the 2020 Secondary School Champion School Trophy.

Championship Convenor Jason Cummings was pleased with the number of students who participated in the first year of the competition. He was particularly impressed with the sportsmanship of all students.

“All the students were a credit to their schools for the exemplary behaviours and attitudes they displayed throughout the Gala Day.” A special mention and thankyou was given to Jason Cummings whose determination and dedication was the driving force of getting the competition introduced in 2020.

Many thanks also went to the Atherton Eagles Football Club, all the members of the Geoff Hoad Organising Committee, the referees, coaches of the teams and ladies in the canteen who made the day a success for all.

Successful come and try day for pickleball A SUCCESSFUL come and try day was held for the world’s fastest growing sport, Pickleball, in Malanda on Saturday, March 7.

The sport which combines aspects of, tennis, badminton,

squash and table tennis had 36 people from as far as Millstream and Mareeba come to Malanda for the day.

There were four courts open on the day, each with an experienced Pickleball instructor who

oversaw the training.

The players soon became proficient enough to play games against each other; the games played in Pickleball are social and the score generally doesn’t matter the score is only kept to

know who serves next.

Out of the 36 people who came and gave Pickleball a go, nearly 20 have indicated that they would like to continue playing.

Pickleball is played at the

Malanda State High Schools Hall on Tuesdays at 3.30pm till 5.30pm and Thursdays from 6.00pm to 8.00pm.

Sports and events cancelled SPORTS and events all across the region have been cancelled or postponed due to the risks of COVID-19 contamination and to help combat its spread.

All Soccer and Netball games have been suspended until April 14 and 20 respectively, while the ongoing cricket season has been cancelled.

Cairns District Rugby League has suspended all of its games, carnivals and selection trials until the first of May where they still plan to continue the season from May until October.

A spokesperson from each respective governing body; Cairns District Rugby League, Cricket Far North, FNQ Football and Netball Queensland have all stated that this suspen-

sion of games, carnivals and selection trials is the best decision to help combat the spread COVID-19 in the region.

Race goers will be sadly disappointed as Racing Queensland (RQ) has announced that all TAB and non-TAB meetings across the state will be conducted without patrons until further notice.

Only licenced participants, essential club, QRIC and RQ staff, broadcasting services, approved accredited media and associated emergency staff such as veterinarians and ambulance services will be permitted access to the events.

Racing Queensland CEO Brendan Parnell has stated that RQ is experiencing a “unique and complex situation.”

“The health and safety of our 40,000 participants remains our top priority,” he said.

“We will continue to work with our clubs, QRIC and participants to navigate this period.

“It is important we restrict on-course access in the shortterm to limit the potential spread of COVID-19 and the potential impact to our industry.”

The highly anticipated Great Wheelbarrow Race of 2020 has also been cancelled after council and the committee followed the government’s advice, taking appropriate action to reduce the spread of the virus.

Wheelbarrow Race Committee Chair Nipper Brown agrees with council’s decision to cancel the race for the betterment of the athletes and the public.

“It’s going to have a big impact on the likes of Chillagoe, Almaden and Dimbulah revenue wise,” he said.

“That’s thousands of dollars they won’t get.

“I do agree with council’s decision and I believe that the only viable option was to cancel it; if we postpone it we then have the participants running in some of the hottest months of the year.”

Rodeos have also been cancelled. Rodeos are something that many of the residents of the northern tropics look forward to every year, they gather thousands of people from across the country and for this very reason they are being cancelled.

Mitsubishi classic tees off MotoGP rider visits Mareeba THE annual Mitsubishi Classic golf competition held at the Mareeba Golf course was played on the weekend and saw nearly 100 participants come out for a weekend of golf.

The 36 hole event was open to all grades with a $1000 prize pool up for grabs, and a special prize was donated from Mareeba Mazda and Mitsubishi for the hole in one competition.

The event kicked off on Saturday at 7.30 am, The Mareeba

Golf Club was following the strict guidelines set by Queensland Health and the Australian

Government.

Mareeba Golf Club Captain Mick Deguara was excited to see the competition still going despite the COVID-19 scares.

“We were really fortunate to still be able to hold the event,” he said.

“We had 2 really good days of golf played, it was great to see everyone out and enjoying the day.”

Atherton Show called off THE Management Committee of the Atherton Tableland Agricultural Society Inc. as announced that the 2020 Atherton Show has been cancelled due to the developing situation surrounding COVID-19 (Coronavirus).

A spokesperson said “The decision was not an easy one

to make and has not been made lightly. After many hours of discussions and considering all factors, we feel that the cancellation of the show is in the best interests of everyone involved.

“To everyone involved with the show so far, including the members, stewards, volunteers, entrants, spectators and our

many valued sponsors we would like to thank you for your support over the years and we look forward to working together in bringing the next annual show in 2021.

“We thank everyone for their understanding during these challenging times, stay safe and take care of each other."

Survivor golf series set to go ahead

The second round of the Survivor Golf Series will be continuing at the Atherton golf club this April.

THE Survivor Golf Series will be gracing the greens of the Atherton Golf club this coming April with its second round being played.

The Survivor Gold Series is a brand new and fresh spin on the concept of ‘boring golf’; it’s a fast paced elimination tournament which combines championship quality golf with a friendly and fun environment.

The tournament three stage tournament is capped at 36 players, which comes down to 12 players then eventually 4 players for the final stage of that tournament round.

It is open to all golfers with no restrictions on entry and prizes to be won on every hole played, prizes can include; longest drive, straightest drive, nearest to pin, hole in one and many more.

With the pressure of COVID-19 shutting down nearly all

sports on the Tablelands the Survivor Golf Series assures people that they will still be playing their round at the Atherton Golf Club.

Organiser Dave Cameron has assured people that all necessary precautions are in place to ensure the safety of all participants.

“100 percent we will be taking all necessary precautions to ensure the safety of all golfers and spectators,” he said.

“Golfers who show signs of the flu will be encouraged not to play; we will still be following the government’s guidelines as we will have much less than 500 in an outdoors area.

“This is a good opportunity for people to get outside and get some fresh air.”

The second round of the series is set to be played on April 19 at the Atherton Golf Club.
