Determined to fight for life Noeline Ikin dropped a bomb shell on friends, LNP supporters and federal politics last week as she revealed she has been diagnosed with cancer. The LNP candidate that was seen as the one to finally topple long serving MP Bob Katter from the federal seat of Kennedy, has stepped down from politics to focus her attention on her health. In a statement to her electorate Noeline said: “I have loved and enjoyed the opportunity to be the Liberal National Candidate for the federal seat of Kennedy and feel enriched and grateful for the friendship and mentoring provided to me
over the last number of years by the party, especially the 'northerners' and especially Senator Ian Macdonald. I truly love the region and the people and see opportunity and growth for us and for our future. However, I have been diagnosed with Brain Cancer, grade 3 verging to grade 4. Sometimes life has turning points and this is mine, as such I need to resign as your candidate and focus on proving that a bad diagnosis does not have to mean a bad outcome – just another battle of a different type.
I am stoic in my optimism and I am still smiling – I never give up. I know with absolute certainty that Kennedy needs to be represented in government, for the sake of the region and the people that I love so much. I will help the campaign and be loyal to the region, the new candidate and to this outcome. I ask that members not get sad or dramatic of the changes that are needed, but rather harness their energy and support to a new Kennedy candidate and the battle. As I fight cancer, it would give someone like me great pleasure to see a well

organised and successful fight for Kennedy. Expect me back down the track in some capacity for the northern region and the party. Hope, reward and opportunity has strong meaning in life as well as politics. I am again very grateful for the experience and opportunity as your candidate, I apologise for the disruption this will cause – but I have no choice and must step aside as the Kennedy Candidate and forward in a different direction for a while.” CONTINUED PAGE 3

Fashionable Gracyn stars at Magic Millions A dream to attend the Magic Millions and enter the Queensland finals of ‘Fashions on the Field’ has come true for local teen, Gracyn Marsterson. Not only has this dream come true, but Gracyn’s expectations were exceeded when she was named one of the top three winners at the 2016 Myer Fashions on the Field, on Saturday, January 9, at the Gold Coast. Gracyn placed second runner-up (or third); and walked away with more than $1000 in prizes and her name in the limelight. Up against more than 100 stylishly dressed contestants from all over Australia, stunning 18-year-old Gracyn wowed the judges in her custom made Sonlia Fashion Millinery and Alice McCall top and skirt ensemble. Purchased a little over a year ago, specially for the Magic Millions, Gracyn had to wait till she turned 18 to be eligible to enter the state finals competition. The winning creation was made up of a multipatterned, digital bell bottom, calf length skirt and loose matching blouse by Alice McCall; and a woven twist ‘Boater’ style hat, custom made by Mareeba Milliner Liana Hastie, from Sonlia Fashion. Gracyn said to place in the top three of a high profile fashion event was a dream
come true. “I nearly had a heart attack when I realised I was in the top 10, it was so surreal and when they announced my name as a runner-up, I could not believe it,” said Gracyn. “I have never been so excited.” Planning makes perfect and it was a stylish team that helped created the winning look. “I envisioned the boater style hat and when I showed the dress to Liana she created exactly what I had in mind,” said Gracyn. “The bag was a last minute decision which I borrowed from family friend, Margie Russell and my yellow YSL shoes were only discovered a few months ago when doing a photo shoot for a Sydney designer. “It was all meant to be and with the help of my mum to finish it all off (makeup, hair etc), it just came together perfectly,” said Gracyn. Mareeba Milliner Liana Hastie was so excited for Gracyn and said they always hope that their clients do well at these events and to have one come in the top three, at this level, is unbelievable. “The boater style hat is very on trend at the moment and when I saw the dress I was inspired immediately,” said Liana.

“At Gracyn’s age to come third in a Queensland final, which is highly competitive, is amazing and we are so very proud of her and really excited to have one of our creations hit the national stage at such a big event.” Another three ladies wearing Sonlia Fashion Millinery also made the preliminary stage at the Gold Coast event. This was Gracyn’s biggest win ever and she now plans to enter competitive fashions all over Australia. “This really was my first stepping stone into competitive fashions on the field and I can’t wait to see what’s next,” said Gracyn.
Gracyn’s race day TIPS:
1. Be prepared – research is key. Find out as much as you can on sponsors, judges, trends, materials and designs, etc. Plus have knowledge of what you are wearing – where it came from for example; designer/label, etc. 2. Have loads of Bobby Pins, especially if it’s a windy day. 3. Have your lipstick handy and ensure you have no lipstick on your teeth. 4. Pre-Register. Arrive early with plenty of time to register and enjoy the day. 5. Drink water and find a shady place so your make-up does not melt off. 6. Wear shoes that not only look great, but that you can stand in for around six hours minimum.

Mareeba Pool to celebrate 50 years
The Mareeba Swimming Pool will commemorate its 50th anniversary on Sunday, May 29 – exactly 50 years to the day after it was officially opened in 1966, by then Mayor, Mr Mick Borzi. The Mareeba Swimming Club began prior to the pool’s opening and operated from the old Brewery Hole on the Barron River. The Express, together with enthusiastic locals including June Cotter from the Mareeba Pool, are seeking the public’s help in search of memorabilia that will be displayed at the pool’s open day, in May. Memorabilia can consist of photos, trophies, certificates, medals, club records, etc. To celebrate this milestone the Mareeba Swimming Pool will hold an ‘Open Day’ which will be free to the public. The day will commence at 10am with morning tea, followed by official speeches at 11.30am and a sausage sizzle for a gold coin donation. Drinks will also be available with funds raised going to the Mareeba Wildcats Swimming Club as part of the clubs fundraising efforts. The day will feature displays of memorabilia in 10 year blocks from 1966, music and fun times, plus of course lots of swimming – so bring your togs. Further information can be obtained by contacting Karen Pedersen on 4094 8337 or June Cotter 0407 672 126 – Please leave a message. Memorabilia can be left at the Mareeba Pool and all submitted items should have your name and phone number clearly visible so they can be returned after the event.

After Peritoneal Dialysis was deemed the only option, he undertook a rigorous regime.

APA decision by TRC – THE Tablelands Regional Council voted to issues a new 10x10 year lease to the Atherton Peforming Arts theatre, with Mayor Lee Long using her casting vote in the 4-3 vote. In a common trend in 2015, Mayor Lee Long, Cr Geoff Stocker and Cr Peter Hodge all voted in unison to deliver a desired outcome. A practice, which was lambasted by Tableland Investments representative, David Scott. “We walked in their today and there were three councillors with pre-determined views. TI had dialogue with all councillors prior to the meeting and was given some indication into how they would vote. “We then had our presentation (and two others following it) and it became apparent that our presentation made no change in how they pre-determined that they were going to vote. “It was a total abuse of power over politics. Gladiators and Roosters suffer heavy defeats – MAREEBA’s start to the 2015 CDRL season got worse, after they received a 58-4 bath against Ivanhoes in Smithfield. The Will Billy Gordon resign? – ONLY two months into her minority Will Billy resign? government tenure and Premier Palaszczuk’s ship had sprung a major hole in its rudder. A series of child support and domestic violence allegations against the Member for Cook Billy Gordon caught the public’s atWhat’s New At Amaroo? tention, which saw him expelled from the Labor Party. All claims against Mr Gordon were eventually dropped later in the year, and he remained defiant about staying in parliament, refusing to resign despite an outpour of public pressure. ‘This council has failed the community’ – TRC division four councillor Rod Marti questioned the operational credibility of the TRC, in light of the APA vote a week earlier. “This (TRC) council has failed the community by not doing its job, by not commissioning a detailed report that explores all options for all stakeholders. Mayor Rosa Lee Long defended the vote outcome and said that both sides had been given an equitable opportunity to put their case forward. “It upsets me to stand in this house and divulge details of such a personal nature to members. I am a proud father; it is the most important job I will ever do. “I am also extremely humbled to be representing the good people of the great electorate of Cook. On Friday evening, allegations deepened, after it was made public on cairnsnow.com website that Mr. Gordon had been abusive towards his former partner. In light of these allegations,Premier Palaszczuk, who holds a minority government with the support of independent Peter Wellington, asked Police Commissioner Ian Stewart to inves-
tigate the matter. The State Opposition has called on the Premier to release all correspondence from her office relating to serious allegations against the Member for Cook to provide a full explanation of
By Carl Portella
THE recently elected Member for Cook, Billy Gordon, wasn’t a household name before the state election on January 31; but now it seems everyone in the state knows who Billy Gordon is, but for all the wrong reasons. Events unfolded on the morning of Friday March 27, at Parliament House in Brisbane, after Premier Annastacia Palaszczuk received a letter from Mr Gordon’s former partner accusing him of failing to lodge tax returns in order to escape child
support payments. The letter was also sent to a number of ministers including: Housing and Public Works Minister, Leanne Enoch and Communities, Women, Youth and Child Safety Minister, Shannon
Fentiman. In parliament the Member for Cook said: “I bear full responsibility for my actions; unfortunately, the relationship did not end on a positive note. “It was an extremely upsetting period after which I independently sought counselling. “As a result, I have moved to immediately rectify my tax affairs; and I have also ensured that any outstanding child support payments have been made to my ex-partner, so that I can put this issue beyond doubt.
the circumstances. Deputy Premier John-Paul Langbroek said the curious handling of the issue raised even more concern. “From what the government has said so far, the Premier’s first move was to run off to the union bosses at Labor Headquarters and wipe her hands of the problem, he said. “This is not just about the character of the Member for Cook, but also the credibility of Premier Annastacia Palaszc-
zuk. Mr Langbroek said regardless of what decision the Premier made about the future of the Member for Cook, serious questions needed to be asked about what really happened. “Queenslanders deserve to know exactly what has happened behind the scenes. The question being asked by The Express Facebook friends is: Why was all this not picked up before the election on Janu-
ary 31? Why not indeed. Questions also need to be asked as to why Mr Gordon was not properly investigated in Labor’s pre-selection process to ascertain as to whether or not he was a suitable
candidate. Premier Palaszczuk should also come under scrutiny for not raising the abuse allegations in parliament on Friday, knowing full well the contents of the letter which she received on March 18; and only sending the case to the police commissioner after the allegations were made public. At a noon press conference on Sunday March 29, the Premier said: “Today I am prepared to put my premiership on the
Cook. I told him very clearly that today I would be writing to the state secretary to expel him from the state Labor party. “Secondly, I told the Member for Cook he would not be sitting with the state Labor parliamentary team. I also told the Member for Cook, in the best interests of the party, in the best interests of the parliament and in the best interests of Queensland, he should resign as a member of parliament and that his position was untenable. She added Mr Gordon had let her down, the party down and the government down and this was one of the hardest calls she
has had to make. “I am shocked, appalled and I feel sick in the stomach, Premier Palaszczuk said. “There will be a thorough review of the pre-selection process. This came hours after Mr Gordon apologized to the people of Cook and made a full confession about his criminal past in a message to his Facebook friends. Part of the statement read: “My contact with the criminal justice system has included: Breaking entering and stealing in 1987 in Innisfail, breaking and entering with intent, attempted breaking and entering and stealing in 1990 in Atherton, breach of probation in 1992 in Atherton, public nuisance in 1996 in Normanton, breach of bail conditions in 1999 (stemming from not attending a court summons from the 1996 incident). In addition I have twice had my driver’s license suspended for unlicensed driving (2004 and 2008). Finally, in 2008, I was served with an (AVO) Apprehended Violence Order as a result of a complaint by my mother. In further developments later that evening, Mr Gordon took to Facebook stating: “I am presently weighing up my options after the advice I have received from the Premier that she has asked for my expulsion from the Labor Party. “I am very concerned that I should be afforded natural justice in any determination that my tenure as the Member for Cook should be terminated because of her move to see me expelled from the Labor Party and her wish for me to resign as a
line. “This is a very serious issue. I spoke to the Member for
Member of Parliament. “Any other attempt to remove me from the Parliament and force me to resign is a denial of natural justice. Queenslanders are in for an interesting time in state politics in the coming weeks, the decision voters await now is: Will Mr Gordon resign? Mr Gordon concluded by stating he will make no further media comment until his decision has been finalised.

APRIL 22 ‘At loggerheads’ – INSTABILITY across the Far North in certain sectors of local (TRC) and state government (Cook electorate) continued to cause havoc for the Tabelands. Justin Fris summed it up by saying: “Both situations are in many ways engulfing the region with a notable stench; akin to a toddler who has soiled its nappy, but is forced to wallow in it until progressive change is embraced. Journey of a lifetime – Our editor Carl Portella spent time with Carol Geraghty and her two sons Jacob and Walter-Luke, who were completing a horseback journey from Victoria to Cooktown. NRL legends visit Mareeba – TWO former NRL legends, Nathan Merritt and Rhys Wesser, conducted a special rugby league clinic for school kids during the holidays at Davies Park.
APRIL 29 ANZAC DAY – ANZAC Day ceremonies were both emotional and memorable across the Tablelands, as thousands attended dawn services. $14 million injection confirmed – Mareeba’s initial $13 million injection for the airport was confirmed by the Palsazczuk Government, along with an additional $1 million for the MSC waste water treatment plant. Want to quit smoking in 60 minutes? Everyone knows cigarettes are not good for them. Everyone knows they spend too much money on cigarettes. So, why do people continue to smoke? And better yet, why is it so hard for so many people to quit cigarettes? 63% of smokers want to quit. But they don’t. Why? There are many reasons, but the biggest reason of all is because smoking cigarettes is not actually under your control. Most people smoke almost unconsciously and smoking cigarettes is usually done by your unconscious mind. When you first started to smoke you did it consciously. But now it is something your unconscious mind does automatically. So unless you deal with the individual reasons unique to each person, you will not have any luck in quitting cigarettes long term. This is where Andrew Squillari from Oasis Wellness Centre is here to help. Andrew is passionate about empowering people to

amused by Deputy Premier Jackie Trad’s recent de-amalgamation cash split ruling. Deeply concerned about how this decision will impact ratepayers within her jurisdiction, Mayor Lee Long said ratepayers within the TRC should not be forced into footing the bill of de-almagamtion. “Our ratepayers should not be footing the bill for the de-amalgamation and our communities should not be robbed of their cash reserves due to a flawed process, she said. In an official statement, the TRC claims that prior to amalgamation with the Mareeba Shire Council in 2008, the following Tablelands councils (Atherton, Eacham and Herberton) had a total of $30,336,808 allocated as cash reserves. It also stipulates that the MSC had a total of $22,569,308 in comparison. Ms Trad’s ruling means the cash split will be virtually down the middle. As it stands, the TRC will receive $26,024,048, while the MSC will yield $26,053,002; with Mayor Lee Long calling for greater understanding from the Palaszczuk Government. “We are seeking an understanding of the ethical redistribution of funds

which, we argue, has been determined by a model which does not accurately report the property, plant and equipment redistribution, and relies on assumptions and calculations which we dispute, she said. Should the decision be upheld after negotiations, Mayor Lee Long said it appeared inevitable that TRC ratepayers would be hit from the back pocket. “This decision will definitely hit our resident’s pockets. “On a ratepayer basis, this is a transfer of cash from our ratepayers to Mareeba of more than $560 per ratepayer. “To ensure our cash reserves don’t runout in a couple of years, and to ensure a viable Council post de-amalgamation, we will have to consider a significant rate rise and potential levy to cover this loss. “Our region deserves a better deal from the State Government who initially forced amalgamation and then de-amalgamation onto our communities without any of our residents having a say. “The previous Minister responsible for de-amalgamation indicated that the broad de-amalgamation policy position was that the continuing Council would be no worse off and that the new Council would be responsible for the full cost of de-amalgamation, and if that’s the case, our region needs a more equitable financial split. CONTINUED ON PAGE 3

THE township of Dimbulah was established in 1870 to service the Hodgkinson goldfields in our pioneering days. In 1915, the town’s railway station was also established and still stands today as a testimony to those who came before us. The Dimbulah and District Museum was established in 2003 at the original railway station; and has been looked after by dedicated locals Maria Murador, Mirella Busato, Margaret Portch and many others. A new committee consisting of President Nipper Brown, Treasurer Sue Bent (pictured) and Secretary Grace Armenti, has been formed with the hope of at-
tracting more volunteers to help run the establishment and have it open seven days a week as a tourist information centre. Another suggestion was to create a Museum Trail from Mareeba through to Chillagoe where visitors could visit all the museums in the area in a day trip. The Savannah-Lander tourist train comes through the station each Wednesday and Saturday, with the one hour stop in Dimbulah allowing travellers an opportunity to see the township and its museum. Any locals who are able to help from a volunteer point of view can call 0447 796 049; your help will be much appreciated.
THE 2015/2016 Tablelands Regional Council budget was eventually passed last Thursday morning; albeit by Mayor Rosa Lee Long’s casting vote. Mayor Lee Long’s budget received support from Cr’s Geoff Stocker and Peter Hodge – while Cr’s Shaaron Linwood, Marjorie Pagani and Rod Marti opposed it. TRC ratepayers will see a general rate increase of 6 per cent, which individually, equates to $1.70 per week. Along with this – and a point of contention amongst those opposed to the budget – is the one-off $100 deamalgamation levy, which will be payed by every property owner within the shire. In a sparsely populated gallery compared to recent weeks, Mayor Lee Long addressed the room with her budget speech, which was as follows: “I present today the 2015-2016 budget for the Tablelands Regional Council, she said. “This $59 million budget is a reflection of the tough financial condition our region is facing since de-amalgamation. It provides a sustainable journey to a surplus budget within as short a time-frame as possible, and sets a strong foundation for our long-term financial plan despite significant hurdles which we need to overcome. “Like all local governments throughout Australia, we are facing challenges due to the freezing of financial assistance grants, increased electricity and insurance costs, maintaining and renewing aging infrastructure and the reduction in funding streams. This Council has suffered significant blows through the State Government enforced amalgamation and subsequent de-amalgamation of our local government area. Costs to Tablelands Regional Council have been significantly higher than estimated prior to de-amalgamation. CONTINUED ON PAGE 5

A story of courage and determination
In 2007, 26-year-old Danyele Foster was diagnosed with Autism Spectrum Condition. For most of her life, she was misunderstood, stigmatised, and lived a barren, isolated existence. She knew what it was to be the unwanted stranger, forever on the outside looking in. Since her diagnosis, she has increased in selfknowledge and confidence and her life has been profoundly transformed through hard work and perseverance. Danyele graduated from Good Counsel College, Innisfail with commendable results and then studied a Bachelor of Arts/Laws majoring in History and Politics at JCU Townsville. Unfortu-
nately she was not able to complete this degree due to problems associated with undiagnosed Autism, in addition to severe depression and anxiety. After many years in the wilderness and after receiving her diagnosis, she began to put her life back on track. She currently has a Certificate three in Business Administration and Outdoor Recreation (Trail Riding) and has also completed a NCAS RDAA Level O (Assistant Coach) certificate and aim to complete Level 1 RDA coaching certificate. Also on her agenda is completing a Diploma of Library and Information studies which will enable her to find employment in the library/museum/ gallery fields. Danyele also has her heart set on becoming an Equine Facilitated Learning mentor, to assist people living with Autism and depression/anxiety. Part time university study is also on the cards in the next few years in order to contribute to the Autism field and to assist those on the Spectrum, from a lived experience, as well as clinical perspective. Horses have always been a love of hers since a child, but because of not coming from a horsey family living on a yacht, in addition to her parent’s financial situation was unfortunately never able to own one. The closest she came was weekly lessons for a few years as a child. After her diagnosis, she began riding and volunteering in 2010 with North Queensland Riding for the Disabled, located on the beautiful Atherton Tablelands. She was selected to compete in the 2012, 2013 and 2014 Riding for the Disabled Association of Queensland State Championships in dressage and mounted games, and she was consistently placed in the top five. Seeking new challenges, and to improve her confidence and knowledge of dressage and horses, she found Cristogracia Spanish Horse Stud
and Training Facility nestled in the quiet hamlet of Tarzali. With the knowledgeable guidance, mentorship and generosity of Chris and Grant from the stud, 2015 saw her competing in mainstream competition for the first time, in the field of Working Equitation. Danyele’s ultimate goal is to develop her horsemanship and riding skills and compete further in mainstream equestrian competition and attain the highest level of dressage and Working Equitation possible. “My ultimate dream is to become classified as a Para Equestrian and perhaps one day represent Australia” she said. However, to achieve this Danyele requires financial assistance as equestrian sport is extremely expensive, with training, equipment, memberships and entry costs proving prohibitive for someone currently receiving the Disability Support Pension. Danyele takes every opportunity to learn more about Autism by attending various workshops

and networking with both clinicians and adults on the Spectrum, and seeks to both educate the broader community and advocate for those on the Spectrum. In 2015 saw her attend and give the closing address at APAC 2015 (Asia Pacific Autism Conference) as part of the Autism Mentoring Program facilitated by Autism Queensland. She has also given presentations to organisations, community groups and seeks to develop this further. Danyele is also accomplished in other fields, including being a freelance writer and has been published in several magazines, namely Horses and People magazine and Link Disability magazine. Without diverse abilities, ideas and talents, and an innate capacity to foster these from within, society would be doomed to socio-economic stagnation. Society needs people with disabilities to lead authentic, fulfilled, lives – not isolated, dependent ones.

JP volunteers Ann Vains, Michael Dwyer, Allison Sciani, Jo-Ann Pine, Lyne Nowell and John Dixon with Magistrate Tom Braes. Absent: Claire Hands, David Affleck and Peter Tubman.
Members of the Mareeba Branch of the Queensland Justices Association received recognition of services to the community at a ceremony held at the Mareeba Court House. Magistrate Tom Braes welcomed JP volunteers to the boiler room on Monday, January 11, presenting each of them with a certificate of appreciation acknowledging their support of the JPs in the community programme. Mr Braes said that to qualify as a JP is a great achievement. “The JPs in the community programme allows people the opportunity to have their important documents witnessed at no cost and at a convenient location, as here at the court house,” said Mr Braes. “The programme is only as good as the support it receives from local volunteer JPs.
“On behalf of the Department of Justice and Attorney General I thank you for your dedication and commitment to providing this valuable service to the community.” Registrar and Clerk of the Court Raimund Heggie, on behalf of the Justice of the Peace Branch and the Department of Justice and Attorney General, has co-ordinated the volunteers since March 2013. Michael Dwyer a member of the Mareeba Branch of the Queensland Justices Association said; “A JP is a responsible position, what we do here is confidential, we are continually training, it’s our way of giving back to the community.” JP hours are presently every morning Monday to Friday from 9:00am. In the event that a volunteer JP is not available for any reason, courthouse staff step in and provide JP services until 4:30pm, Monday to Friday.

Council seeks agent for Industrial Park Business growth signals in the area have given Mareeba Shire Council the confidence to invest in a six-month strategy to attract investors to the Mareeba Industrial Park. Council has called for expressions of Interest for a commercial agent to market the park. “We've priced our land at $56m2, whereas in Cairns people are paying upwards of $200m2. We're focused on driving commercial development in the Mareeba Shire and we see solid signs of growth, particularly in the industrial sector,” Mayor Tom Gilmore said. “The Park is developed to cater for the consumers need for industrial land in areas that present environmentally secure and affordable options. We predict a future demand for industrial land in areas adjacent to regional cities such as Cairns,” Cr Gilmore said. “We have a commitment for largescale development in the park and we are also holding further preliminary
discussions with interested developers and have attracted businesses in the agriculture supply chain, such as packaging and a cold storage facility. Major development in surrounding areas such as the $5 billion Rio Tinto expansion in Weipa present another solid opportunity for businesses wanting to set up in Mareeba. We see Mareeba strengthening as one of the largest commercial and industrial hubs outside Cairns,” Mayor Gilmore said. “Key benefits of the Park for developers include the connectivity to southern and northern markets; very competitive pricing, flexible configuration of sites to meet specific needs and sites are appropriately zoned for industry. Keep your cool as temperatures climb With temperatures set to soar across the state this week, the Queensland Ambulance Service is reminding residents to keep hydrated and stay cool during the hot weather. QAS Director, Clinical Quality and Patient Safety Tony Hucker said everyone was potentially at risk of suffering a heat-related illness during periods of high temperatures. “People most at risk of suffering a heat-related illness are the elderly, babies, pregnant women or breastfeeding mothers and those who suffer pre-existing medical conditions or take certain medications,” Mr Hucker said. “Physically active people, such as manual workers like builders or those that play sport may also easily become dehydrated or overheat.” Mr Hucker said drinking plenty of water and keeping your body as cool as possible can reduce the risk of heat-related illness. “We urge people to plan ahead to stay healthy during times of hot weather,” he said “Switch drinks that contain alcohol, caffeine or that are high in sugar with water and eat small meals often to stay hydrated. “Stay cool by wearing light, loose cotton clothing and stay indoors or find a cool shady spot when the sun is at its hottest between 10am and 3pm.
“Open windows and doors and use fans to circulate air or turn on your airconditioner to reduce the temperature indoors.” Mr Hucker said signs to watch out for included headaches, nausea, cramps, fainting, excessive sweating, tiredness and dizziness. “During periods of hot weather we see an increase in cases of heat-related illness, such as heat cramps, heat exhaustion or heat stroke,” he said. “The symptoms of heat-related illness can include flushed or pale skin, cramps, fainting, nausea and vomiting, headaches and dizziness, a rapid pulse, disorientation and/or drowsiness. “In extreme cases, people can also lose consciousness and may collapse.” Mr Hucker said that if people suspected someone may be suffering from a heat-related illness, they should dial Triple Zero (000) immediately. “Lay the person down in a cool spot, remove as much clothing as possible and give the person water to drink if they can swallow,” he said. “You can also cool the person down with a cold shower, bath or sponge or by covering them with a wet sheet. “If they become unconscious, put them on their side and follow the Triple Zero Emergency Medical Dispatcher’s instructions and they will provide vital first aid advice until paramedics arrive.”

entertainment Joy arrives at the Rising Sun Cinema in Mareeba
Joy is the story of a family across four generations and the woman who rises to become founder and matriarch of a family business. Review by Louise Keller: Loosely based on the life of Joy Mangano, who created a new household innovation - the first selfsqueezing mop, the story is about dreams and overcoming the odds. . As a portrait of a young woman struggling to survive as she battles with a dysfunctional family, it works exceedingly well. The film begins with scenes from a black and white TV soap, complete with melodramatic dialogue and characters. It's an intriguing start and it doesn't take long to understand that the soapie is representative of the entire family that lives under the same roof - unhappily. Joy's mother Carrie (Virginia Madsen) spends her life from her bedroom watching the soap. There is chaos everywhere - from the basement where Joy's divorced Venezuelan singer husband Tony (Edgar Ramirez) is practising his act 'as the next Tom Jones', while complaining he has to share the space with Joy's divorced father Rudy (Robert De Niro), who has just been discarded by his latest mistress. Watching Joy cleaning up the yoghurt on the bedroom floor, while trying to fix leaking pipes, adjudicating the rows between Rudy, Carrie and Tony, while looking after the needs of her two young children, is like watching Cinderella succumb to the ashes and demands of an unfair world. Focusing on the film's protagonist Joy (Lawrence), who is forever buoyed by the expectations of her beloved grandmother Mimi (Diane Ladd) as someone who will make the family proud, she is the girl with big dreams who always liked to make things. First it was a dog collar; now it is a mop. The thrust of the narrative explores the ups and downs of Joy's venture into business, producing and marketing a magic mop that will make every housewife's cleaning needs a breeze. Rudy's new wealthy girlfriend Trudy (Isabella Rossellini), TV executive Neil (Bradley Cooper) and Joy's sour half sister Peggy (Elisabeth Rohm) all play a part in the process; the climb up the ladder of success is by far the most interesting. The scenes at the televisionshopping channel when Joy meets Neil and per-
suades him to buy her mop and give her a go are entertaining. That leaves Lawrence, and as Joy, the gal who won't be defeated, she is the film's greatest asset and decoration.

Junior FNQ futsal players to trial for international tournaments Junior Futsal players from across far north Queensland are invited to trial to represent Cairns United Futsal Club at two prestigious international tournaments in Spain and Japan, later this year. Under 11, under 13, under 15 and youth Redlynch Central Sports Stadium registered players are invited to trial for Cairns United teams to compete in the prestigious 2016 ‘Torneo Solidario Internacional Fundación Eric Abidal’ to be held in Barcelona, Spain, from December 17 to 18. The 15-day Spanish trip will include training camps, and friendly games against FC Barcelona youth teams. It will also provide various tour opportunities, including the opportunity to see the legendary FC Barcelona football team play at their Camp Nou home, watching the likes of Lionel Messi, Neymar and Luis Suarez in the flesh. Meanwhile, under 10 and under 12 Redlynch Central Sports Stadium registered players are invited to trial to be selected for the 2016 ‘Kyushu Junior Futsal Championships’ to be held in Fukuoka, Japan, in late June and early July. The 10-day Japanese trip will also include tour opportunities, as well as friendly matches and training camps in the lead-up to the tournament. Trials for all age groups will take place on three Sundays (January 31, February 7 and February 14) at Red-
lynch Central Sports Stadium from 10am to 12pm, with the final selected squads being announced on February 17. Training for the teams will then begin on Sunday, February 21, with regular weekly training until the squads depart overseas. Redlynch Central Sports Stadium General Manager Tony Cifuentes said the international tours provided a rare and exciting opportunity for budding junior Futsal stars across Cairns. “These trips are further examples of the pathways created for the region’s best young Futsal talent,” said Mr Cifuentes. “We believe that there are lots of opportunities for the most talented kids in Far North Queensland to be recognised at all representative levels. “Our aim is to create as many pathways as possible for these kids to follow their dreams, supporting the hard work they put in. “We are thrilled to be able to provide this opportunity for our region’s most talented players, and I know they’ll have a memorable experience.” Any players wishing to trial should visit the Redlynch Central Sports Stadium website at www.rcss.com.au to download an application form. For further information, contact Redlynch Central Sports Stadium on 4039 4378.
The Mareeba Bandits continued their dominance in local cricket last Sunday as they took on a dogged Mulgrave away at Fuller Park, in Gordonvale. The home side went in to bat first, but were unaware of the onslaught that was about to come as they were all bowled out for just 93 runs off 22 over’s. Robert (Bomber) Adams was the pick of the bowlers who tore through the top order to end up with superb
figures of 4 wickets for 11 runs, off just 6 over’s. In reply to Mulgrave’s 93 runs the Bandits made light work in reaching the target for the loss of just 4 wickets to make 97 runs with Luke Lamborn (21) and Adam Roy (22), contributing runs as the Bandits reached the target in 18.4 over’s. The Bandits are at home this weekend and if the weather holds out it promises to be an excellent day of cricket.
