cause, as he aims to raise muchneeded awareness and funding for child abuse – a scourge he sees all too much of in his position as Program Coordinator at Community Services Tablelands (CST).

Mr La Rosa said his decision to run in the Half Marathon was

one borne out of knowing that it would generate interest and shine a light on the importance of ensuring vulnerable members of our communities are safe and protected from harm.

“Most days I see the impacts of trauma on children and their families, either directly or vi-

cariously,” he said.

“Child protection has become something I am very passionate about, and I’m a big advocate for the work that child protection organisations are doing within communities, by proactively educating children to prevent harm, while providing ongoing support for children to address trauma.

“On a personal level, providing families with the support required to enhance their capacity and provide better outcomes for their children is really rewarding.”

While preparing for a 21 kilometre run might be foreign from the rigours of rugby league, they’re both demanding in their own right.

“Training has increased in the last month, and I’ve been trying to run as much as possible,” he said.

“It’s been a simple workout plan, with increasing lengths and intensity, but I’ll be easing off in the coming week to ensure my body is in the best position to get through the 21km without

injury.

“I recently completed a 17km obstacle course run which has allowed me to get an idea of what to expect.”

Mr La Rosa said the response from the community has been great since he began his donation drive.

“A lot of people have shared the page to raise awareness for the cause,” he said.

“I’ve raised $2000, but my final goal is $3000.

“I’d like to sincerely thank the entire Tablelands community that has got behind the cause by either donating, sharing, or simply discussing child protection over the last few weeks.

“Child protection is everyone’s business, and this mentality will only lead to better outcomes for children within our community.”

MAREEBA Chamber of Commerce has welcomed the arrival of an after-hours telehealth medical service in Mareeba but hopes an after-hours inhome service can be reinstated in the region as soon as possible.

Speaking after the North-

ern Queensland Primary Health Network (NQPHN) announced the appointment of a Telehealth Doctor NQ, Mr Moro said any additional afterhours services which attended to the medical needs of local residents after hours while easing the pressure on hospital

emergency departments was welcome.

NQPHN announced last week that it had terminated the contract with its existing after-hours in-home GP service provider in Mareeba and the Tablelands.

doctors will provide a consultancy service via phone or secure video link.

“The chamber has been an active supporter of the Save Mareeba Hospital campaign; our priority has and will continue to be in ensuring the Mareeba community has a full

Rodeo festivities in full swing

THE annual Mareeba Rodeo festival is in full swing, jam packed with festivities leading up to Rodeo weekend on July 13 and 14. On Saturday the Junior Cowpokes competition kicked off the festival program at Kerribee Park.

The day saw lots of enthusiastic juniors rolling up to take part. The Cowpokes is a chance for the littlies to be involved with the spirit of the Rodeo by dressing up in western gear and being assessed on their personality and conversation skills.

Local country music talent and dancers entertained the large crowd in attendance and the huge cent sale proved a big drawcard for locals and visitors.

Mareeba Rodeo Secretary Lee-Anne Brown said the Cowpokes was a great opportunity for the kids to gain some experience as these same little girls might go on and be future rodeo queen entrants in years

Horticultural growers call for removal of stamp duty on insurance THE Far North’s peak horticultural lobby group is urging the State Government to remove stamp duty on agricultural insurance products to alleviate cost imposts on growers.

With the region at the frontline of unpredictable weather conditions, FNQ Growers believes abolishing stamp duty would make insurance more affordable for growers, and growers less reliant on the public purse after a natural disaster.

“The Queensland Government collects nine per cent on agricultural insurance premiums and the GST – and is one of only a few states left in Australia doing this,” FNQ Growers chair Joe Moro said.

“The Victorian, New South Wales and the South Australian state governments have already abolished this inefficient tax, and we call on the Palaszczuk Government to do the same.”

Mr Moro said the far-

reaching impacts of natural disasters meant there has been a great need for growers to protect crops, livestock and agricultural equipment.

“We have witnessed, and experienced, Queensland’s unpredictable weather conditions, with our farmers livelihoods devastated by floods, cyclones and fire in recent times,” Mr Moro said.

“I’m sure that most farmers would generally agree the onus is on them to mitigate against the risk, however, for Queensland farmers the impost of stamp duty is driving up the cost of agricultural insurance leaving many farmers who are already facing precarious financial situations due to external pressures, struggling to afford the high premiums.”

Mr Moro said the removal of stamp duty on agricultural insurance products would be a welcome relief for growers, who endure the impost of high costs on other critical utilities including electricity and water.

The 15-year-old St Stephens Catholic College student was recently named a runner up at the Queensland Miss Teen State Finals and was awarded ‘Best in Interview’ for the Junior Category.

Kendra will be the only pageant representing North Queensland this year and will be competing against the nation’s best when she undertakes the weeklong competition in Launceston, Tasmania.

TRC hand down annual budget

TRC Mayor Joe Paronella was all smiles as he handed down the annual budget on Thursday.

THE Tablelands Regional Council’s (TRC) 2019/20 annual budget was handed down at their monthly meeting last Thursday, with critical water infrastructure and roads at the forefront of their funding commitments.

In what is Mayor Joe Paronella’s last budget, he noted that he was proud to present what he described as a product of thorough and meticulous collaboration between Councillors and staff.

“The budget continues our commitment to both maintaining and improving critical infrastructure and improving programs and services that enhance access, equity and inclusion,” he said.

“We have advocated to State and Federal Ministers to ensure our voice is heard, and that fair and equitable consideration and funding are provided to support our economic, investment, tourism, health, environment, housing, and water and energy secu-

rity endeavours.

“We continue our investment in maintaining and improving our facilities and infrastructure.

“We will spend over $29.5 million on capital works, supported by $11.7 million of grants and subsidies from State and Federal Governments.”

Water quality has been an issue in the TRC Shire for quite some time, and in the adoption of the budget, Cr Paronella confirmed the development of a region-wide Water Business Strategy and Infrastructure Development Plan, and implementation of the Water Quality Improvement Plan.

“We need to ensure that further investment is cost effective and targeted to improve water quality and reliability,” he said.

“To reduce the frequency and duration of boiled water notices and improve water security across the region, we are invest-

ing in new infrastructure, implementing improved processes, and maintaining and running new systems.

“This is reflected in a 5.4% increase in water access charges and a 10 cent increase in consumption charges to 69c/kilolitre.”

The budget was lauded by the majority of councillors sitting at the round table, with Cr Katrina Mellick noting that this budget sets up for a “strong and vibrant future”.

“This budget demonstrates that this council has considered future economic, social and environmental sustainability by developing and implementing tangible strategic initiatives to position us to be best placed as a region heading into the future,” she said.

“This Council has taken the bull by the horns and taken the necessary tough HR decisions,

general rates increase by 3% for residential, farming and grazing properties, and 2% for sporting and community groups.

Capping of rates on land in Categories F and G continues

resulting in a totally transformed executive team, who are not only skilled to face the challenges of the new world of local government, but who are also champions and examples of the culture we are trying to embed in our organisation.

“So I encourage people to stop looking the rear-view mirror and instead look at where we’re heading.

“We can’t change the past but we can certainly influence the future.

“I support the budget and believe this is a responsible one that puts in place and builds on the foundations of our previous budgets to enable us both as a council and a community to collectively build the future we want.”

The only councillor to vote against adopting the budget was Division 6 councillor Owen Byrnes, who expressed his displeasure about the TRC’s handling of financials in recent years.

“While I do believe our CEO Mr Commons (Justin Commons) is trying his best to transform TRC into a better business, I find it difficult to support the budget for multiple reasons,” he said.

“To constantly be in deficit is a greasy path to financial disaster.

“We need to be mindful that the outgoing council are leaving a legacy of multiple deficits, and maybe the ambitions and strain from basic council deliverance of service and maintenance has led us into other areas we can’t afford to be.”

The 2019/20 budget will see

Cook Shire Council hands down “responsible and realistic” budget RENEWING existing infrastructure and maintaining services are the priority for a “responsible and realistic” 2019-20 Cook Shire Council budget, adopted at yesterday’s special meeting.

Cook Shire Mayor Peter Scott said Council’s budget was a positive and realistic response to the financial challenges presented by a lack of own-source revenue.

“Our general rates of $3.7 million contribute just 11.7 per cent of Council’s operating expenditure,” Cr Scott said.

“All other expenditure, including staff costs, operational programs and capital works, is

grant funded. I would like to highlight that this funding is not guaranteed, and we are reliant on our highly skilled Council staff to secure this financial support that ensures the financial stability of our Shire.”

Cr Scott said Council’s operating position was an improvement on the past two financial years, with a deficit of $7.6 million budgeted for 2019-20, compared to $8.8 million in 2018-19.

“Council’s improved financial position is a result of our strong budgeting process, with clear guidelines around expenditure increases, limited contingency budgeting and a

competitive submission budgeting process for capital works and operational initiatives,” Cr Peter Scott said.

General land rates have gone up by a responsible 3 per cent, as have sewerage, rubbish collection and water charges.

“Our capital works budget is over $51 million, however only $3.5 million of that will be funded by Council, with the remainder from grant funding,” he said.

“Key capital works projects include upgrades to all Council airports, a dog off leash area, sealing of Savage Street and renovation of the Shire Hall and the Gateway to the Cape project.”

AAIC continues its fight against ice THE drug ice continues to be a scourge right across the country, and its impact on the Tablelands is forever growing.

That is why the work of the Australia Anti Ice Campaign (AAIC) is of such grave importance, as they travel the country outlining the horrors of the drug to high school students between 12 and 17 years of age.

AAIC’s Far North Queensland Development Officer Glen Ivers and AAIC Presenters Esther Degen and Mimi Robinson were in Mareeba last week to deliver a presentation to Mareeba State High School and St Stephen’s Catholic College students about the lasting and often irreparable effects of ice addiction.

“The core message of AAIC is “not even once”, Mr Ivers said.

“The police are describing the influx of ice into this country as a tsunami, so our position is that we need greater education and awareness to stop the demand for the drug.

“The police and border security units are doing their best; however the supply will never end, so we are trying to reach out to 12-17 year-olds through these presentations to ensure they’re aware of just how terrible drug addiction is.”

To build greater rapport with the students, AAIC Presenters Esther Degen and Mimi Robinson speak about their own struggles with ice addiction.

“When you have a lived experienced with ice addiction you can describe in detail to the students the horrific outcomes,” Ms

Degen said.

“I started using drugs at 12 years of age and by 19 was a full-blown drug addict, so I guess being relatable and being able to give a first-hand account of the side-effects of ice makes a massive difference – I feel they’re more inclined to listen.”

Ms Robinson echoed Ms Degen’s sentiments, stating that not only does providing a first-hand account resonate greatly with the students; she also noted how rewarding it is on a personal level.

“Being able to participate in these presentations is fantastic,” she said.

“I’m so passionate about impacting these young kids and it’s such a rewarding feeling when they come up after a presentation and ask questions.

“It’s reassurance that our work is important and that we are getting through to a number of these students.”

As an increase in awareness and education are at the forefront of AAIC’s model, the organisation will be hosting a ‘Walk Against Ice’ on the Cairns Esplanade on Sunday, September 15.

“That will be our national fundraising launch and hopefully we’ll see people of all ages putting their hand up to help fight against this life-destroying drug,” Mr Ivers said.

A Reflection in Time Bob and Lena Plowman from the Beef Joint have sold their business to Brodie Neal.

A reflection of the 47 years in business, Bob Plowman gives a brief insight into his family.

Bob Plowman‘s grandfather Alex was a butcher at the Bacon Factory in Mareeba and his death in 1952 at the age of 42 was very untimely.

Bob’s father Lex was the second of eight children who left school at the age of thirteen to help his parents.

Lex began working as a butcher at the Bacon Factory Butcher shop which is close to where the Coles supermarket stands today. Lex later went on to open his own establishment “Plowman’s Butchery” where Claude

At the time, if you didn’t like school and were related to Lex you got an apprenticeship as a butcher. At one stage Lex had two sons, a brother and two nephews working for him.

Bob starting working with his dad in 1972. They all moved to the Tobacco Growers store in the mid-seventies.

Lex, Joyce and Bob purchased the Beef Joint in Atherton Street in 1981. Lex and Joyce retired ten years later in 1991 and sold the Beef Joint to Bob and Lena.

A devastating fire in 2005 destroyed the premises and the Beef Joint moved to its present location at 153 Walsh Street where they have been operating from ever since.

It has been a wonderful journey and we would like to thank everyone who was a part of it.

Insta worthy cotton fields comes to end

COTTON CRAZE: Social media has been flooded with photos of the now harvested cotton fields.

THE cotton fields in Arriga have been a real hit with locals and tourists alike as they have flocked to the site to capture the perfect shot – whether it be for their Facebook and Instagram pages or just for their own personal collection.

The cotton fields are part of a trial being done by MSF Sugar, of which is still in its early stages.

Cotton production hasn’t traditionally been common agricultural practice on the Tablelands; however that could all change depending on the success of MSF’s trial.

Cotton Australia’s Policy Officer of Research Direction and Stewardship Sally Ceeney out-

lined some of the benefits cotton production provides and what it could do for the agricultural industry and economy as a whole if it were to secure a foothold on the Tablelands.

“Cotton provides one of the highest gross margins for irrigated summer crops (depending on commodity prices),” she said.

“This has a flow on economic effect for regional communities where cotton is grown.

“Cotton seed also provides a good source of protein for cattle feed.”

Ms Ceeney said new high yielding varieties and insect pest resistance through GM has meant it is now more viable to

grow the crop across different regions.

“The industry has seen expansion into Northern Queensland, Victoria, Western Australia and the Northern Territory,” she said.

Ms Ceeney said MSF’s trial looks successful in what has been a challenging wet season, and she noted that she expects to see continued interest in cotton in the region.

The Express asks that for those interested in taking a photo at the cotton fields to please be respectful of the trial and adhere to the biosecurity risks by not stepping into the field and to not smoke anywhere near the dry cotton.

New Financial Year begins

MONDAY signalled the beginning of the 2019/20 financial year, and The Express reached out to multiple prominent businesspeople in Mareeba to gauge their feelings about how trade has been in the town in recent times and where it is heading in the near future.

A considerable concern that has been raised by Mareeba residents is the number of vacant shops along Byrnes Street, and while that is an issue shared

by Mareeba Chamber of Commerce President Joe Moro, he is of the view that it isn’t as grave a concern as it is being made out to be.

“We obviously don’t like to see any shop fronts without anyone in them, but I think the biggest concern from the Mareeba Chamber of Commerce’s perspective is the vacant RSL building,” he said.

“It has become a dead spot at the head of town which hasn’t been great for the vibrancy of the main street.”

Mr Moro said the feedback received from businesses in Mareeba relating to trade in the 2018/19 financial year was somewhat of a mixed bag.

“However as we look to the

future, when the Chamber of Commerce have spoken with members of the business community in Mareeba, overall the consensus has been that trade is improving,” he said.

“We are implementing a number of strategies in conjunction with the Mareeba Shire Council to ensure get more people within the community shopping in our main street.

“So much so we have set up a main street committee made up of five representatives from the business and property community to help make Chamber aware of some of the issues we’re facing with trade in Mareeba and then work with Council to rectify them.

“An example would be a banner which we plan on putting in the main street, which will highlight some of the attractions in the region and encourage tourists to stay for longer than a day.

“The tourist market is one we’re really trying to capitalise on and we will be undertaking a survey of the nomads over the Christmas in July period to gain a greater understanding on how we can better promote the region and the main street and encourage them to increase spending.”

Caters Mensland owner and operator Raymond Cater said he believes Mareeba is holding up well from a trade perspective.

“Mareeba has always been buoyant, we’re very diverse in what we have and what we do here and I think that’s a strong point for the town,” he said.

“It’s not great to see the RSL building closed, however I’m confident Mareeba will be fine as we have very diligent businesspeople and an active Chamber who are always looking at ways to improve trade and encourage people to the town.”

Mareeba News owner and Mareeba Shire Councillor Mary Graham is hopeful of a better financial year in 2019/20.

“Business is average, I think the fact that we knew in January that we would have an election in the first half of this year meant that trade was going to be hurt,” she said.

“I personally think from January until May, everything was on hold and people just spent what they needed to spend and nothing more.

“As it relates to the election, I think it was good for business and going forward I just hope it picks up.”

Mareeba Hospital home to spirometer machine THE Mareeba Hospital’s OPERA (Old Persons Evaluation, Rehabilitation and Assessment) Unit is now home to a new EazyOne Spirometer Machine thanks to the generosity of the Lions and Lioness Clubs of Mareeba.

Fundraising from the community organisation has been in the works for the past 12 months, and new Lioness Club President Lyn Dyer noted her excitement about the Tablelands receiving such an important medical service.

“We’re really pleased to help the community and in particular the Mareeba Hospital in any way we can,” Ms Dyer said.

“Over the years we’ve helped the hospital with a number of things that we’ve purchased, and that’s what we’re about as an organisation, lending a hand whenever we can.

“A huge thank you goes out to the Lioness and Lions Clubs of Mareeba who have provided an essential medical service to the region,” OPERA Unit Manager Tanya Barker said.

“This machine enables us to do an evaluation of patient’s lung capacity when they first come into the unit.

“Sometimes that can be used for diagnosis or just to assess where the patient is medically with regards to their lung capacity and prescription of exercise

and medication.

“In addition, it also can be utilised throughout their admission to show progress and we use that not only for exercise and medication prescription, but also to motivate the patient so that they can become as independent as possible through their admission with the OPERA Unit.”

Ms Barker said the donations demonstrate how wonderful the Tablelands community is and how willing people are to get behind the local hospital.

YCA taskforce strike back

THE Kuranda community has been fighting against an invasive ant species that threatens its residents for the past three months.

Yellow crazy ants are listed as one of the top 100 worst invasive species in the world and they have recently made the wet tropics of Kuranda their next target.

Yellow crazy ants develop large ‘Supercolonies’ which can

house up to 7.5 billion ants per colony, with each supercolony containing multiple queens who work together unlike other competitive ant species.

These ants pose a threat to pets and small children with their formic acid spray which can cause serious injuries.

The yellow crazy ant (YCA) infestation site at Kowrowa on Green Forest road was baited in May in an attempt to stem the

tide of yellow crazy ants plaguing the Kuranda community.

The baits were laid by hand and contained a small concentration of fipronil.

The bait is then picked up by the foraging ants and taken to the queen where the toxin can accumulate, killing the queen.

By killing the queen, the reproductive agent within the colony, numbers of ants are expected to diminish.

More bait treatments will be done after the suspected area is surveyed again.

The YCA community Taskforce is hosting an information session; the BonANTsa Celebration, where people can learn how to identify the invasive ant species.

The BonANTsa Celebration will be held at the Kuranda Recreation Centre on Fallon road on July 7 at 2pm.

Ms Mackenzie said the repair technique was common in North America and had been successfully trialled on public land in the Tablelands region over the past nine years by RegenAG in partnership with regional organisations. One example is a bowl in Tolga parkland that is stopping erosion near the Kennedy Highway.

“The bowls are a smallerscale, cost-effective way for farmers to stop erosion advancing in catchments,’’ Ms Mackenzie said.

“They’re designed to work with the natural landscape, not against it, by mimicking the kind of forms you’d find in creeks.

FAR Northern graziers are trialling new ways to tackle erosion in their efforts to improve productivity and protect the Great Barrier Reef.

Tablelands graziers Owen Rankine and Roma Starczewska opened their gates to watershed restoration specialists, earthmovers and farmers recently while the Far North’s first farmland ‘Zuni bowl’ was constructed.

The initiative is part of the $2.3 million Upper Johnstone Integrated Project, funded by the Queensland Government, delivered by Terrain NRM and focused on erosion hotspots in the Tablelands-Innisfail region.

Terrain NRM’s Jen Mackenzie said three Zuni bowls would be built on the Rankine-Starczewska property, which would become a demonstration site for the Wet Tropics region.

Owen Rankine said smallscale erosion had long been an issue on his family’s beef cattle property near Lake Eacham.

“Every wet season it gets a bit worse, and more topsoil is washed away,’’ he said. “If we can repair our gullies, and other farmers can do the same thing, it’s another step to improving our pastures and stopping runoff to the Reef.”

His family has also started to reduce bagged fertiliser use by planting legumes in their pastures, experimenting with natural fertilisers and planning for rotational grazing in smaller paddocks.

Ms Mackenzie said the Johnstone River catchment was a priority for water quality improvement, with the Far North’s

highest sediment reduction target as part of the Australian and Queensland Government’s Reef 2050 Water Quality Improvement Plan.

“This project is all about reducing sediment losses to the Great Barrier Reef lagoon while helping graziers to help them-

selves by addressing erosion problems and improving their pastures and livelihoods,’’ she said.

Atherton butcher goes ham on debut ATHERTON butcher Cross Custom Meats have snagged four awards at the 2019 Australian Meat Industry Council’s (AMIC) Queensland Regional Smallgoods Competition.

Held in Cairns, the competition pits some of the best butcheries from Townsville north against each other in a blind taste-test judged by industry professionals.

Cross Custom Meats came away with the Leg Ham on the Bone, Bacon Rasher, Boneless Leg Ham and Kabana awards.

The Tablelands business’s feat is all the more impressive as it was their first time entering.

“We only opened on July 31

of last year, so to come away with four awards is a pretty special feeling,” Cross Custom Meats owner and operator Douglas Cross said.

“I knew I was up against some really strong competition as there are people there who have been doing it for years, however I went there to win it and I’m really pleased we did.

Their win ensures they move onto the state-wide competition to be held at this year’s EKKA in Brisbane in August, where they will be participating in the Royal Queensland Food and Wine Show’s Sausage King, Ham, Bacon and Smallgoods competition.

“I’m really looking forward to going down to Brisbane and depending on how we go down there, we might get the opportunity to participate in the Australian titles later in the year,” Mr Cross said.

Mr Cross took time to thank those who have played in an integral role in the business’ success since it opened just shy of a year ago.

“I would like to take this opportunity to recognise my staff, it wasn’t just me who achieved this – it’s because of the work everyone here puts in every day,” he said.

“I couldn’t do this without them.”

FNQ Growers donated $21,000 to the Mareeba Friends of the Foundation last week.

FNQ Growers donated $21,000 to the Mareeba Friends of the Foundation, to be used for their endoscopy campaign.

Growers president Joe Moro said the $21,000 was from 2018’s fruit auction and he hoped to raise more at this year’s in September.

“We raised $800 at our first auction and we are strong supporters of the Mareeba Friends and the Mareeba Hospital,” Mr Moro said.

“This is our community and we are absolutely passionate about it and this is a way we can make a real, tangible difference,” he said.

Mareeba Friends of the Foundation president Ida Portella said the money would go towards $158,000 worth of endoscopy equipment to bring a new service to Mareeba Hospital.

“We just feel that the more people who can be diagnosed and treated at home in Mareeba, the more people will have better cancer outcomes,” Ms Portella said.

“This will benefit the whole community and we’re really excited to be a conduit for the community – be it corporates or schools or individuals or events like the Great Wheelbarrow Race,” she said.

Mareeba Hospital Medical Superintendent Dr Nikki Patching said the equipment would support the introduction of endoscopy services at Mareeba Hospital later this year, meaning people can be treated closer to home.

“Bowel cancer is prevalent throughout Australia but we know that if it’s detected early, 90 per cent of cases can be successfully treated,” Dr Patching said.

Rogue wheel causes bizarre incident THE intersection of Beantree Road and the Kennedy Highway at Tolga last Tuesday was ground zero for a strange but very dangerous event that looked like it came straight out of a road runner cartoon.

Local resident Jan De Lai of Mareeba was traveling along Beantree Road looking to turn right and head towards Mareeba when to her dismay a semi-truck heading south and attempting to turn into Beantree Road had one of its tyres come off the axel and slammed into her vehicle.

The drive of the semi-truck was seemingly unaware of the

incident and continued on its way without realising the seriousness of the event. Mrs De Lai said “It was a very bizarre event, there’s not much more to say about it,” she laughed. “My first response was to call triple zero but all their lines were busy and I was put in a queue, I’d like to thank to the man who stopped and chased down the truck for me.”

While there were no serious injuries in the accident a visit to the panel beater will be on the cards for Mrs De Lai.

Drivers slugged in July 1 change The State’s peak motoring body has warned Queensland drivers they were set to be stung with outrageous increases to transport fees at the start of the new financial year.

RACQ spokesperson Clare Hunter said motorists would be slugged with a raft of increases including licence fees, vehicle registration fees and fines come July 1.

“Once again drivers will be paying more to cover the cost of renewing their licences and they’ll be out of pocket more to keep their vehicles registered,” Ms Hunter said.

“The cost of a driver licence will increase to as much as $180.70 for a five year licence.”

Ms Hunter called on the Queensland Government to freeze registration, after it was revealed costs had increased by

more than 17 percent in the last five years.

“Queensland drivers pay more for rego on average than anywhere else in Australia. The average driver of a 4 cylinder car will pay as much as $385.90 a year to keep their car on the road,” she said.

“Rego is rising by 2.25 percent which stings more than it should, with the increase higher than the rate of inflation.”

Ms Hunter said drivers caught doing the wrong thing could expect to pay more, with a penalty unit increasing by 2.25 percent, up to $133.45, on the first day of the new financial year.

“Don’t say you weren’t warned, the cost of breaking the law like speeding or hooning just got more expensive,” she said.

Far north Queenslanders fed up with region’s roads FAR north Queenslanders have slammed the state of roads in their region and demanded they receive vital safety improvements, a new RACQ survey has revealed.

As part of its Transport Priorities Survey, the Club gave more than 2000 Queenslanders a hypothetical $100 million and asked how they would spend it to improve their local transport network.

RACQ spokesperson Lucinda Ross said participants in the Cairns, Cook, Mareeba, Tablelands, Cassowary Coast and surrounding regions said they would allocate almost two-thirds of their total budget to delivering upgrades to local and Statecontrolled roads.

Locals listed in state selection QUEENSLAND Cricket has finalised its selection process for the 2019-20 Youth Pathway Academy, the squad has commenced training and will continue for nine months.

Male and female players between the ages of 13-15 across all regions of Queensland were selected.

The academy is designed to fast track and oversees the development of the players giving them the best chance of success at Youth Championships, First Class and International Cricket.

Mareeba Cricket Club team member Angus Campman has been one of three players selected together with Amy Hunter and Talytha Macdonald of

Mareeba’s Angus Campman, along with Hunter and Talytha Macdonald of Atherton have been selected in the QLD Youth Pathway Academy.

Angus is excited to start training. “It’ll be tough and fun, hopefully I’ll learn a lot from it and improve,” he said.

Grand finals finish in style

CHAMPIONS: The Barras won the Mareeba Basketball Mens A Grade grand final 88-77 on Thursday night.

The PCYC sports hall was abuzz last Thursday as the Mareeba Basketball Association held their grand finals to end another successful season.

The end of season fixtures featured the junior and senior

school children finals and the men’s A grade final and were played in front of an energetic crowd.

In the mens match the Barras started off strongly and put some early point on the board

but the Bulls refused to be outpaced and matched the Barras basket to basket.

MOPS receive crucial funding

THE Mareeba Old Players and Supporters (MOPS) club have received some significant financial help courtesy of Mareeba Toyota as they were donated a signed Cowboys jersey along with other merchandise to auction later in the year.

Fundraising for MOPS began at the weekend’s Tableland Cup clash between the Mareeba Gladiators and Atherton Roosters at Davies Park, and President Rob Miller said the money raised from fundraising efforts as well as the auction will go towards growing the club along with MOPS attire that will be available for purchase for prospective members.

Miller said he would like to recognise those who have contributed in allowing MOPS to get off the ground.

“I would like to thank Andrew from Mareeba Toyota, Tablelands Fertiliser and Mareeba Transport, they have all committed significant funding and their

much-needed financial help will go a long way in ensuring MOPS can grow,” he said.

“Once we are up on our feet and doing better financially, we will then be looking at ways we can get involved with the community ourselves and lend a hand where it’s needed.”

Key MOPS events coming up include the official launch on July 20 at the Mareeba Gladiators vs Cairns Brothers game at home. In October, with a date to be confirmed, they will hold a legends night with ex-Queensland and New South Wales Origin players.

For those interested in joining, it cost $5 to become a MOPS member. Interested individuals are encouraged to attend the MOPS monthly meeting.

Cup goes to Atherton THE Mareeba Gladiators’ three game winning streak came to an end on Saturday night after the Atherton Roosters defeated the home side 36-22 to secure the Tableland Cup at Davies Park on Saturday night.

Atherton jumped out to a 12-0 lead in the opening stages through tries to their captain Jermaine Pedro and captain Luke La Rosa.

However Mareeba were able

to rally and get back into the game through tries to stalwart Tom Hughes and Kurt Jackson.

Defensive lapses cost the home side however and the Roosters scored three consecutive tries to set up a 28-12 scoreline at the main break.

The Mareeba Gladiators showed grit and determination in the second half to get back into the match, yet it wasn’t enough as Atherton’s adlib and second

phase play proved too much.

Roosters coach Graham Clark Snr said he was happy with his side’s performance.

“We had a couple of lapses but overall I thought we played well,” he said.

“We’ve had some injuries in the last few weeks so our game against Edmonton and tonight was a good opportunity to get some time back together as a squad.

“Mareeba have improved a lot since we played them in round one, so this was a really important win and will build confidence for us moving forward.”

In the Reserve Grade match Roosters also won 20-14.

The Atherton Roosters have the bye this week while the Mareeba Gladiators will once again take on the Cairns Kangaroos at Vico Oval this Sunday at 3pm.

Boxers shine bright at Golden Gloves

BRYDE’S Boxing Gym continues to punch above its weight on the state’s boxing landscape, and that was further evidenced after three of the Mareeba based club’s fighters took home five medals at the Golden Gloves tournament held in Townsville recently.

Matthew Carroll took home a gold and silver medal along with the tournament’s Encouragement Award.

“I was in the first fight of the night and moved up in age and weight to the 15-16 years of age and 54-57 kilogram division,” Matthew said.

“I felt really comfortable throughout the fight and was able to come away with a unanimous decision win.”

Matthew then fought in the last bout of the night, however was unable to secure the victory against the bigger and older opponent.

“I made a mistake in the first round and tried to trade with him and got hurt,” he said.

“I was happy I came back though and boxed well in the second and third rounds but it was just a little too late.”

Matthew said his loss in his second bout was a great learning experience and one that will make him a better fighter in the future.

“I was able to stop my opponent in the second round, and to be able to do that against some-

one bigger and older makes the win really special.

“It was a great test for me and one I was really excited to be a part of – and it will be huge for me moving forward.”

Bryde Boxing Gym’s third medallist for the weekend was Kurtis Bryde, who reigned vic-

torious in the 13-14 years of age and 60-63.9 kilogram division.

“I trained really hard in preparation for the tournament so I’m glad I was able to perform so well,” he said.

“The win now means I’m a two-time Australian, Queensland and Golden Gloves champion.”

Kurtis said he will now be turning his focus to the Queensland titles held later in the year.

Matthew, Bayden and Kurtis said they would like to thank their fellow teammates and coaches Wayne Bryde and Pinkie Csoma for their enormous support.
