History brought to life in Yungaburra PRISONERS at Lotus Glen Correctional Centre (LGCC) have restored a horse-drawn sulky and bullock dray for display in Yungaburra, the largest National Trust village in Queensland.

The restored vehicles are the latest in a series of projects carried out for Yungaburra Beautification Incorporated that have helped the village become a tourist drawcard on the Atherton Tablelands.

LGCC General Manager Richard Butcher said while the restoration work had been of great value to Yungaburra and the surrounding region, it had also been valuable for the prisoners and the correctional centre.

“Prison industries, such as the workshops in which the restorations were carried out, play a vital role in improving the safety and security of centres by

providing prisoners with meaningful employment as part of a structured day.

“For many prisoners, this is also the first time they have had a daily routine which includes being gainfully employed.

“It provides a high level of theory and practical training for the prisoners, providing vocational skills which help them reintegrate into the community on release and improve their chances of avoiding reoffending when they are released from prison.

“International research shows that when prisoners are released into the community and have stable accommodation, social support and employment opportunities, they have the best chance of not reoffending, which makes the community safer,” Mr Butcher said.

by Yungaburra residents, the late Clyde Evans and his wife Marilyn.

The century-plus sulky belonged to local resident Joan Napthali and her late husband, Norm.

Restoration work involved the LGCC carpentry, engineering and textile workshops, stripping back and restoring original wood and metalwork, replacing those materials beyond salvage and diligent research to recreate items, such as upholstery fabric on the sulky seat, which had not stood the test of time.

The restored vehicles will soon take on new life in Yungaburra – the sulky on display in the foyer of the historic Yungaburra Hotel and the dray on a traffic island fronting Gillies Range Rd, where it will be filled

with flowering plants.

Sue Fairley, President of Yungaburra Beautification Incorporated, a not-for-profit community organisation, who are responsible for these projects as well as the hanging flower baskets, flowering tubs and many other Yungaburra Beautification projects, said the work carried out by the LGCC prisoners and the officers who train them was greatly appreciated.

“The standard of their work is exceptional, not just on the sulky and bullock dray, but on many other projects over the years.

“We have come to trust the work of Lotus Glen and know we can rely on them to help the community,” Mrs Fairley said.

Tablelands Regional Council Mayor Joe Paronella was also delighted with the quality of work.

“It’s fantastic to see the outcome of the prisoners’ hard work and I commend their efforts.

“Without the support of LGCC, we wouldn’t have these fantastic pieces of history on display for everyone to see,” Mayor Paronella said.

Division 4 Councillor Samantha Banks said locals and visitors often marvel at how beautiful the Yungaburra village is.

“I’m so proud of Yungaburra and the dedication of the community members.

“Working with others they have again ensured our history is kept alive and the village is looking its best.

“It’s also great to see LGCC prisoners having the opportunity to learn valuable skills to take forward in their lives,” Councillor Banks said.

Load limits hurting business TABLELANDS Regional Council’s Division 6 Councillor Owen Byrnes put forward a motion for a report at last Thursday’s council meeting which outlines methods that can be utilised to increase load limits that have been imposed on 26 of the TRC’s 82 bridges.

The motion comes after an independent review and assessment of 26 bridges in the TRC region identified the need to reduce speed and load limits on several bridges to ensure safety and extend the useful life of the infrastructure whilst rectification works can be planned.

It’s not good news for a number of primary producers in the region, who are heavily reliant on these bridges to transport their freight and produce.

Cr Byrnes noted how such restrictions will impact business owners’ productivity and profitability if increases to the load limits aren’t made soon.

“Council have some very difficult decisions to make regarding ageing infrastructure,” he said.

“It has become very distressful to property owners with regards to imposed load limits on various bridges in the TRC region.

“These restrictions have the ability to cripple business; particularly in the dairy, livestock and agricultural industries.

“In some cases, these bridges have gone from carrying fullyloaded trucks one day to having 8 tonne restrictions the next.”

Bridges with some of the harshest restrictions imposed include Bew Road and Blunder Park which saw load limit changes of 30 tonnes to 8 tonne – while Wooroora Road’s previous 35 tonne load limit is now just 6 tonne.

In addition to the load limits, there has also been a 5 km/hr speed limit enforced.

Despite the enormity of the issue for a number of businesses within the TRC’s boundaries, the motion was rejected as Cr Byrnes was the only member of council to vote in favour; much to the dismay of the members of the community in attendance.

Cr Owen Byrnes will be hoping to see a similar upgrade to that of the Kauri and Maunder Creek Bridges applied to a number of other bridges within the region which have had imposed load and speed limits placed on them.

TRC Mayor Joe Paronella said remedial works will be considered as part of the prioritisation of future budget and funding submissions in line with council’s Transport Strategy

when adopted.

“Council has an extensive number of bridges and major culverts across its road transportation network with structures of varying construction types and

physical condition,” he said.

“As with all major assets, Council is developing asset management plans to proactively plan for the maintenance, renewal and upgrade of our age-

Cr Paronella said the community does not have the financial capacity to replace all bridges currently subject to load limits.

Join in the Walk for Prems

ALL across Australia, people will come together at the end of October to raise money in support of premature and sick babies born in Australia.

The ‘Walk for Prems’ will be held on Saturday, October 27 along the Cairns Esplanade and will be part of a nation wide walk in the hope of raising $350,000 to support premature and sick babies.

Each year more than 48,000 premature or sick babies are born in Australia and for the families of the babies this can mean extreme physical, emotional and mental stress.

Walk for Prems is the largest annual fundraiser for the ‘Life’s Little Treasures Foundation’, Australia’s foremost charity dedicated to supporting the families of babies born sick or prior to 37 weeks gestation.

Now in its tenth year, Walk for Prems will be conducted simultaneously all across the country in all major cities, plus regional locations.

Mareeba resident Tonya Mitchell and her family will be joining in the walk at the end of the month and hopes to see many others join in.

“This will be my second year walking, my daughter was born prematurely last year, so I’m also walking for her,” said Mrs Mitchell.

“I’ll be walking with some close friends and family on the day.”

Mrs Mitchell is currently the highest solo fundraiser in

the whole of Australia, raising $2,194.40, with the second highest solo fundraiser boasting $1,950 out of Sydney.

There are currently 53 solo participants registered for the walk in Cairns and Mrs Mitchell hopes to see that number grow with the day drawing nearer and nearer.

“There aren’t a lot of participants registered at the moment,” she said.

“But hopefully that number will grow closer to the walk date as people come out to support a great fundraiser.

“They smashed their money goal last year of $300,000, so this year’s goal of $350 000 isn’t out of the ballpark.”

Mrs Mitchell is encouraging people to come out and raise money on the day because you never know if you’ll need their support.

“The foundation helped me out when my daughter was born – they sent care packages with information and clothing to fit her,” she said.

“Get behind it because you never know if you’ll need their support.

“I never thought it in a million years that I would need their support, a healthy pregnancy and discharged two days later, I ended up staying seven weeks.”

The walk will start at 8:30am at Funship Parklands on the Esplanade and will begin after a moment of silence to remember the babies who passed away, accompanied with the releasing of white doves.

Martin Tenni receives OAM

ONE of Far North Queensland’s most respected former politicians was recently recognised for his work within the community at the Queen’s Birthday Honours as he received the Order of Australia Medal (OAM).

Martin Tenni had an extensive political career spanning years, playing an integral role in overseeing and bringing critical infrastructure to the region.

Born in 1934, Mr Tenni attended school in Cairns however was forced into early employment after the passing of his father – and after time spent

working in the hardware industry, Mr Tenni made the decision to develop his own hardware supply business.

Mr Tenni’s transition into politics began in 1970 when he was encouraged to run for the Mareeba Shire Council, and it wasn’t too long before he established himself as the council’s Chairperson.

That kick-started what would be an outstanding political career for Mr Tenni, as he successfully ran as the National Party candidate for Barron River in 1974.

Mr Tenni served as both a member of state parliament and as the Shire Chair until 1976.

Arguably Mr Tenni’s most prominent work came in his roles as the Minister for Environment Valuation and Administrative Services in 1983 before moving to the Water Resources and Maritime Services portfolio in 1986.

Mr Tenni then served as Minister for Mines and Energy in 1987.

It was Mr Tenni’s work during his time in the ministry where his work continues to

have the greatest impact - as his involvement in redeveloping the Cairns domestic and International Airports, his help in founding James Cook University along with the development of the road from Cairns to the Kewarra Beach roundabout are still being widely utilised to this day.

Mr Tenni retired from politics due to poor health in 1989.

Mr Tenni is a name synonymous with Far North Queensland, and his important work in helping grow the region will be remembered for a long time.

petition in Parliament on behalf of the community calling for a quality medical service to be delivered to the Mount Garnet region.

The petition is asking for a regular and frequent quality medical service by a General Practitioner (GP) at least 2-3 full days per week – a service which isn’t currently provided.

Mount Garnet residents only have access to a private GP once a fortnight for a total of four hours, a service they believe is far from sufficient to meet the community’s needs.

As a result of just four hours of medical services being provided each fortnight, the clinics are booked out for months in advance, forcing patients to travel more than 50 kilometres to Ravenshoe to receive treatment and advice.

“It is extremely disappointing that we have a lack of doctors and medical services throughout regional and rural Queensland,” Mr Knuth said.

Fallen Police officers remembered

WITH HONOUR THEY SERVED – National Police Remembrance Day was held last Friday and saw visitors from all across Australia attend a march and ceremony in Mareeba.

After the march along Walsh Street, officers, emergency services personnel and community members paid their respects at a service at the Abundant Life Centre.

Officer’s lives were remembered and honoured by the

Queensland Police Force with speeches being presented by several high ranking officers and officials within the police.

Retired district officers also attended the ceremony and assisted with the lighting of the candles to remember and honour the memories of those the officers who lost their lives.

Unfortunately the honour roll grew longer after two officers tragically lost their lives in service in Tasmania in 2018.

Leigh Johns was shocked to receive a $300 donation courtesy of the Dimbulah Railway Museum to help support his son who suffers from autism.

Museum President Cr Nipper Brown stated that the donation was going directly to the centre where Mr Johns’ son is

being treated.

“We’re making a donation to one of the train drivers for Autism,” he said.

“The money goes straight to the centre where his son is.

“So we’re donating $300 to that charity.”

Dimbulah Railway Museum volunteer Rob Smith echoed Nipper’s comments.

“The driver just finished a 100km run in Herberton with all the funds going back to the community centre where his

son is,” he said.

“Which is good, it doesn’t just go into a big float; it goes specifically to the centre.”

The volunteers who make up the museum charge a $5 fee for afternoon tea with all funds raised going back into the community or to a worthy cause.

The Dimbulah Railway Museum holds an afternoon tea every Wednesday and Saturday for the coming and going of the Savannahlander train passengers.

Book Launch illustrates student’s immense talent

Five students from Mareeba State School held their book launch recently with Eliazabeth Honey in attendance.

FIVE talented year 6 students had their Book Launch at Mareeba State School recently.

Chosen for their writing ability and drawing skills, the model kids attended a four-day intense writers’ and illustrators’ camp at Daradgee Environmental Education Centre just north of Innisfail.

Well-known authors and illustrators Eliazabeth Honey and Craig Smith taught them many tricks of the trade in 30 minute lessons throughout the camp.

McInness and Chelsea Morrison published their very own children’s picture book under the caring and watchful eye of Mareeba State School teach Barbara Robinson.

“They wrote their own story from previously researched family history and grandparent reviews,” she said.

“They then painted a watercolour picture for each of the thirteen pages as well as washing papers for two covers and two endpapers.

The result was a masterpiece to be treasured forever.”

Quirk calls it a day

One of Queensland’s longest serving nurses was recognised for her service to health as she called it a day on a wonderful career spanning 50 years.

Herberton Hospital nurse Katherine Quirk was recognised for her 50 years of service as her colleagues held a retirement party for her on Saturday.

THE Herberton Hospital said goodbye to one of its most respected employees as they hosted a retirement party for longserving nurse Katherine Quirk on Saturday.

Mrs Quirk has spent her entire professional career working as a nurse at the Herberton Hospital, with her 50-year career being the longest of any nurse currently working in Queensland.

In addition, Mrs Quirk is the longest-serving Indigenous nurse still working in Australia.

Mrs Quirk said it is an honour to be recognised by her colleagues.

“I wasn’t expecting any of this, so for my colleagues to organise a party in recognition of my work really means a lot,” she said.

“The Herberton Hospital has been a great place to work and nursing has been an extremely rewarding career.

“I’ve been fortunate enough

to work alongside and meet so many great people and I’ve learnt so much over the years working as a nurse.

“I would recommend it as a career path for those who might be thinking about it – we always need nurses and it’s a great chance to help people within your community.”

That sense of community is something Mrs Quirk cherishes about Herberton and why she said it will always be home.

“It’s a very tight-knit community, everyone knows each other and looks after each other no matter their background,” she said.

“And that’s why I would like to take this opportunity to thank the community and my colleagues for the wonderful support and care they’ve provided me over the years.”

Mrs Quirk has been integral to the fabric of the Herberton Hospital for more than five decades, and that’s evidenced by the glowing fashion in which her colleague Justin Collins-Rankin speaks about her.

“She’s been such an inspiration,” he said.

“She has the best attitude towards patient care and no matter what was thrown her way she took it in her stride.

“She always treated people with respect and displayed professionalism and dedication at all times.

“If you were a nurse just starting your career, Kathy is the person you would want to learn from – so she is someone who will be sorely missed at the Herberton Hospital.”

Dad’s Army support the Mareeba Hospital THE Dad’s Army Great Wheelbarrow Race team have been an integral part of the annual event as their display of grit and determination during their seven years of competing has proven that age is just a number.

And it’s not just their competitive fervour that is to be admired, as their fundraising efforts over the years have also been crucial to a number of organisations within the Mareeba community.

2019 was no exception, as they raised more than $6000 that went towards purchasing a physio chair for incapacitated patients of the Mareeba Hospital along with a sofa bed for overnight stays for the relatives of patients.

2019 Dad’s Army team captain Graham Morrow said this year’s race and fundraising efforts were a resounding success.

“We were aiming to raise $5000, so to be able to eclipse that by $1000 is fantastic,” he

said.

“We were able to raise a lot of that money from our calendars, so we want to thank the community who purchased those calendars and showed their support throughout our fundraising drive which included our hundred boards.”

Mr Morrow also wanted to express his gratitude to the Mareeba RSL sub-branch and Mareeba Leagues Club for their financial support, along with local

gym Essential Fitness who trains them on a weekly basis.

“There’s a group of close to 20 of us who catch up every Wednesday at 8am to train and socialise,” he said.

“That particular class is eligible for people over 55, so I encourage anyone of the older generation who are looking to improve on their fitness and enjoy the mateship and camaraderie that exists within the class to come down and get involved.”

Digging deeper into soil management for farmers

FREE soil tests and on-farm soil health advice are again on offer to Tablelands farmers.

The popularity of a ‘Digging Deeper Plus’ soil health program has led natural resource management organisation Terrain NRM to run a second round for farmers across all industries.

Terrain NRM’s Rowan Shee said there are places for 18 landholders, who will meet once a month at farm workshops led by agroecologist and soil fertility specialist David Hardwick.

The program is open to farmers in the Wet Tropics as well as neighbouring Northern Gulf and Cape York regions.

Mr Shee said farmers ranged from cane cockies and graziers to pineapple, lime and coffee producers in the first round of Digging Deeper.

“Soils range from red volcanic to light granite in this region – it is all about knowing your different soil types and learning how to build soil health across all of them,’’ he said.

“The focus is on improving carbon, organic matter and nutrient levels to manage and maintain soil for the longer-

term. It’s also about better understanding soil tests results and applying them to land management.

“Some farmers in the last course have made changes since, like planting more legumes, lightening fertiliser use and fencing to separate soil types and get the most out of grazing in each paddock.”

The new Digging Deeper program will run from November to next April. This project is supported by Terrain NRM through funding from the Australian Government’s National Landcare Program.

Peeramon beef cattle producer Colleen McLucas said she and her husband Peter were focusing on soil health to “grow the best possible pasture sustainably for the lowest cost”.

Digging Deeper gave them a much better understanding of their soil test results and how to apply that knowledge, she said.

Mossman grazier and tropical orchardist Carmen HenningWhite said visiting properties and learning about other farmers’ challenges and solutions was also invaluable.

Agroecologist David Hardwick will be back to lead Terrain NRM’s new Digging Deeper Plus soil health program for farmers.

One of a small group of farmers who formed Wet Tropics Soil Care after Digging Deeper workshops in 2015, she said soil health was growing in

importance to farmers.

The group now has more than 70 members from Cape Tribulation to Ingham and the Atherton Tablelands.

“You learn to look at soil in a different way in relation to your crops and to really think about what inputs you are using,” she said.

Funding flows to support smart farming in FNQ A FAR North Queensland project has been awarded more than $86,000 to deliver services under the National Landcare Program – Smart Farming Partnerships.

The ‘Smart Drones, Smarter Farming’ project will apply drone technology to precision weed management in Far North

Queensland.

Federal Leichhardt MP Warren Entsch said the federal government funding provided to this project would help local farmers adopt best practice natural resource management.

He said this grant is one of the 110 grants awarded across

the country to a value of almost $9.25 million.

“Smart Farms, Small Grants are about encouraging Aussie farmers to adopt tools and practices that lead to a more sustainable and profitable agricultural sector,” Mr Entsch said.

“Tapping into local know-

how is vital if we are to maximise our national potential and establish an agricultural sector worth $100 billion by 2030.”

Mr Entsch said this project would engage regional farmers in hands-on trials of Unmanned Aerial Vehicles.

“Weed-control case studies

will be run on three farms in the Tablelands’ agricultural region using precision mapping and precision spray drones,” Mr Entsch said.

“I am very pleased to see problem weeds like Tobacco weed, Fire Weed and Giant Rats’ Tail targeted through this project.

“I am particularly proud that Far North Queensland ingenuity will now have the potential to be applied to helping farmers right across the country.”

Further rounds of Smart Farms Small Grants are expected to roll-out progressively over coming months and years.

The 2019 FNQ Football season will come to an end this Saturday with the grand finals held at Endeavour Park, Cairns. After a mixed year of results for the Mareeba Bulls, two teams have secured grand final spots – the men’s Premier Reserves and Premier Youth sides are both on the charge to grand final victory. The Mareeba United Football Club encourages all sponsors and supporters to don the orange and black and make their way down the hill to see the teams in action this Saturday.

A MESSAGE FROM THE PRESIDENT I WOULD Like to take the opportunity to thank all of our sponsors and volunteers for their enormous effort in 2019.

A big thank you to our coaching staff from the squirts right through to the senior teams.

Congratulations to our men’s premier reserves team for bring home the Premiership this year; it has been

a tremendous effort by all players who played for them throughout the year.

The team this year is focused on bringing home the silverware as well as the prestigious Crad Evans shield when they play against their Townsville counterparts on October 17.

Congratulations must also go to our under thirteen/four-

teen all girls team for winning the grand final a couple of weeks ago, it has been a great achievement as this is their second grand final win in two years.

It is great to see two of our teams make it through to this year’s grand finals and we wish them all the best in bringing the trophies home.

Reserves ready to cap off stellar year

THE Mareeba Bulls premier men’s Reserves clinched the FNQ Football premiership for 2019 with Coach Dennis Allen keen to wrap up the season with another two trophies in the form of the grand final shield and the Crad Evans.

After last year’s disappointment in reaching the final and losing out to the Innisfail Cutters the memory is still fresh in the minds of the players as they stage their final preparations for the big match at Endeavour Park this Saturday evening.

The team has learnt a lot from last year’s disappointment of reaching the grand final only to lose.

The pre-season was crucial for the bulls; they started training early in the year with very intensive fitness training to gain the upper hand over opposing sides in the opening games of the season.

Coach Dennis Allen said “We wanted to hit the ground running because winning those really early games at the start was very important as it sets the scene for the rest of the season.”

“We did have a little bad patch, as all teams do in the

middle of the season, but the memories of last year were fresh in our minds and we didn’t want to go through them again.

“It was imperative that we didn’t lose those easy games, this year we had a good blend of youth and experience, there were some 35 players that played in this team at some time and they all need to be congratulated for getting us this far.

“On game day we have to match the intensity of our opposition, we can’t be complacent but Nick and I will make sure that doesn’t come into play, it will be a hard game and we have to be ready for that.”

Assistant coach Nick Tallarico added that Failing was out of the question “In finals it all comes down to who wants it more and who is hungrier, form is irrelevant.

“The players that have been here before will carry those that haven’t.

“We’ve got a great bunch of lads here and they all know what’s at stake.”

A BLEND of youth and experience has the Mareeba Bulls Premier Reserve team on the verge of a sensational treble in the 2019 season.

Having already secured the FNQ Football Premiership by three points over the Stratford Dolphins the team is now preparing for a crack at the grand final come October 5.

On October 17 the Bulls reserves have the chance to really fill the trophy room as

they contest the Crad Evans shield which pits the Champions of FNQ up against the best of the Townsville region in their division.

Coach Dennis Allen has experienced that sensation as a player and is now planning on experiencing it as a coach.

There have been a few lean years when it comes to trophies for the Mareeba Bulls and have, in theory, been in a rebuilding stage

over the last couple of seasons.

Usually the success of the lower divisions means the premier side should have the means to be competitive.

That wasn’t the case this year as the Bulls premiers failed to make the final series.

2019 could prove to be a turning point for the Mareeba Bulls who historically have been at the forefront for many years in the beautiful game.

THE Future of the Mareeba United Football club seems assured after the Mareeba Youth team qualified for the grand final this Saturday at Endeavour Park in Cairns.

At the start of the season the team consisted of 6 fifteen year olds and 6 sixteen year olds which in anyone’s language is a very young side for an under eighteen competition.

Unperturbed by the situation coach Luch Avolio knew he had some work on his hands to mould these young lads into a winning combination.

Time was of the essence to get the team to gel as a unit and become cohesive and to the point where they could play together.

Luch Avolio knew that with persistence and hard work he could make a team out of these boys.

“We did it hard the first round we lost some games and drew others and beat the easy teams, when the boys really started to gel we started getting better results against the better teams and so we kept in touch with the leaders of the pack,” said Coach Avolio.

“By the time we started the second round and after some hard work and some serious training the boys finally found their rhythm and began to dominate teams.

“By the third round we started to get belief into the team their confidence grew and went 11 matches’ undefeated winning 11 on the trot including the 2-0 win against Edge Hill United last week to make it into the grand final”.

“We just missed out on the premiership by 4 point it goes to show the effort the boys put in after jumping all those hurdles.

“It’s a pity we don’t have Dean Alterio in the side, he would have loved to play in this final, I think there was some mismanagement with Deane and because he didn’t start enough games in youth as he was needed in the

This role will involve all administrative duties associated to operations of the Springmount Waste Facility and Woree Recovery Centre in Cairns.

Huge finale for “New Kids On The Court” JUNIOR tennis participation at the Mareeba Club has been declining in recent years so there was a need to find a way to get kids at the grass roots level back into the sport.

The Club was successful in gaining a grant through Get in the Game, Get going clubs: delivered through Sport and Rec-

reation Queensland.

A project called New Kids on the Court was developed to encourage kids aged 8-11 years who have never experienced tennis before to have a go and learn to love the sport for life.

This included the delivery of an 8 week development junior program, culminating in an in-

terschool competition in week 9. The program provided a safe, supportive fun environment for beginners to learn to play in a non-comital manner with all equipment and coaching supplied.

The “New Kids on the Court” interschool Tournament was held on Friday the 13th of

September at 5:30 pm. Schools represented included Mareeba State, St.Thomas’s Mareeba, Dimbulah State, St. Anthony’s Dimbulah and the Steiner school from Kuranda.

Kids were divided into teams of 6 and each school played each other once. Each match was timed and a rotation system was

used to ensure all kids played against different opponents.

At the end of the event Mareeba State School team 1 were declared the winners of the inaugural trophy.

Organisers of the program were excited and extremely proud to see the level of enthusiasm and sportsmanship these

kids displayed. Parents were invited to play tennis with the children after the tournament and seemed to have as much fun as the kids Thank you to Councillors Lenore Wyatt, Mary Graham and Mayor Tom Gilmore for attending and presenting certificates and the winner’s trophy.

Kennedy keen for CDRL return in 2020

The Mareeba Gladiators have secured another key signing as they recently acquired the services of Codey Kennedy.

THE Mareeba Gladiators’ upcoming 2020 season continues to show plenty of promise after they announced the signing of

Codey Kennedy.

Kennedy, 24, has been applying his trade in the Brisbane rugby league competition for

the past few seasons – however he has made the decision to come back north.

“I last played in the Cairns

District Rugby League competition in 2015, and I can’t wait to get back into it,” he said.

“When I last played in Cairns I was playing for Ivanhoes where we went down to Innisfail in the grand final – it’s a strong competition and I’m interested to see how it’s progressed since I’ve been gone.”

Kennedy will join a number of past Ivanhoes players, two of which he shared the field with in 2015.

“I’m really looking forward to playing with Trent (Barnard) and Marv (Marvin Toko) again, they’re two of my closest mates and I enjoyed my time playing with them a few years ago,” he said.

“Hopefully we can regain some of that chemistry on the field and have a successful season.”

Kennedy played on the wing in his stint with Ivanhoes, however has made the switch to the second row in recent years, and he is looking to lead from the front when donning the Gladiator green and gold next season.

“I have put on some size since I last played in the CDRL, so it’ll be good to be one of Marv’s second row partners next year,” he said.

“I’m looking to bring a bit of class and experience to what is a young squad and the opportunity to play under Trent is one I’m excited about.”

With the preseason rapidly approaching, the moves the Gladiators continue to make under their captain-coach Trent Barnard and new club president Bevan Carroll is great for the prosperity of the Mareeba-based club moving forward.

Six-a-side football returns to Mareeba MAREEBA United Football Club’s annual six-a-side competition returns on Wednesday, October 9.

With the sign on being held tonight, Wednesday October 2, the club is hoing for another huge year of social football.

With divisions for men and ladies and with A, B and C grades, everyone is catered for this summer.

Any Players who may want to play, but don’t have a team are also encouraged to also register their interest.

Games will be held on Wednesday and Friday nights with a draw to be released after sign on.

Trail riding takes region by storm

A BRIGHT and chilly morning at Tepon Equestrian Centre, Wondecla saw members of newly formed clubs, FNQ Trail Horse Club Inc and Cairns and District Trail Riders come together for a weekend of Trail Boss accreditation provided by ATHRA representatives (Australian Trail Horse Riders Association).

The Trail Boss certification covers the skills required to supervise and manage an ATHRA run trail ride.

The training has been designed around the Athra code of conduct, its forms and procedures including risk management.

Over a recent weekend participants undertook classroom study and practical trail ride scenarios which involved problem solving that may arise out on the trail, working together as a team and of course having fun and

Local football club kicking goals with grant funds HERBERTON District Junior Rugby Club will be kicking goals into the future thanks to a Queensland Country Credit Union Good for Good Community Grant.

The Club was successful in their application for a grant of $8660 to purchase two sets of rugby league goal posts with pads and skins. Secretary Maree Tewhare says the rising costs of operating a sporting club meant that the project wouldn’t have

been feasible without the grant funding.

“It means so much to receive this grant from Queensland Country,” says Ms Tewhare.

“We just couldn’t have afforded the posts otherwise.”

Queensland Country Credit Union received over 32 applications seeking funding for projects between $5,000 and $30,000 from not-for-profit groups around the state, with nine successful applicants shar-

ing in over $110,000.

Chief Executive Officer Aaron Newman said his team was proud to give back to the community in a tangible way.

“There is so much good being done at a grass-roots level in our communities by dedicated and passionate volunteers, so it is great to be able to give community groups a financial boost to get their dream projects off the ground.”

This is the third year that

Queensland Country has run the Good for Good Grants program, and follows a long history of supporting the community through grants and sponsorships with over $2 million injected into community projects since 2005.

“It’s been exciting to see projects funded under last year’s Queensland Country Good for Good Grants program come to fruition,” Mr Newman said.

“We can see the impact the

grants can have in our local communities, and it is something our Members can take pride in as well.

“This year we saw a 10% increase in the funds awarded through the Program which we were able to do because of the support our communities have shown us over the past year.

“It’s all part of our difference as a customer owned banking organisation. Without shareholders to pay dividends to, we

can invest our profits into local communities while providing the best possible products and services to our Members.”

An element of Good for Good involves the concept of paying it forward, with grant recipients partnering with the Credit Union to fundraise 10% of their grant amount for Queensland Country’s charity partner, Ronald McDonald House Charities.

The Atherton Eagles are all set for their FNQ Football grand final this Saturday after their semi-final win against Mareeba on Friday night.

THE Atherton Eagles second division side clinched a grand final berth last Friday night after a tense battle with the Mareeba Bulls.

The local derby lived up to its name as both teams went goal for goal before a dramatic penalty shoot out saw the home team win 4-3 on penalties after finishing the match 3-3 in extra time.

The cold conditions failed to dampen the boisterous home and away supporters and it was the Bulls that struck first in the 29th minute when Christian Mukadi made the most of an Eagles defensive error to put the away side 1 up at the break.

The home crowd lifted the Eagles and soon saw them equalise through Bryce Cummings, it was short lived though as five minutes later Rhys Pozzebon put the Bulls ahead for a second time.

With one foot in the final the bulls thought they were home but with ten minutes remaining in normal time and extra time looming, Patrick Jackson silenced the away crowd to make it 2-2.

Everyone on the pitch was giving their all with some players beginning to cramp up and tempers began to flare.

After a scramble in the penalty area which saw the Bulls

goal keeper Dmytro Sinelnyk injured, the divisions top goal scorer and one of Atherton’s elite players Scott Rawlings was sent off. Mareeba’s Ross Malfitana was also sent off for retaliation, both players had received yellow cards earlier and the match referee had no choice but to send both off.

With both teams down to 10 men the match resumed with a vengeance in the first phase of extra time with the Eagles mustering the energy to score and go ahead for the first time.

With players dropping like flies it was difficult to see how many players were on the pitch.

It looked like Atherton had

done enough, but it was not to be as Robert Prizmic struck in the 120th minute to give both teams a good breather and gather their thoughts and bodies to see who was physically able to take penalties.

Atherton came out on top in the enduring shootout to book a spot in the Grand Final against Douglas United this Friday night at Endeavour Park.

Both teams played a memorable semi that resembled a grand final and there would have been a lot of sore bodies come Sunday morning. But one can’t help but feel for Scott Rawlings who will miss the grand occasion through suspension.

THE FNQ Football season will culminate this Friday and Saturday at Endeavour Park Cairns with Grand Final matches played in each division.

After a hectic season which saw Alex Srhoj appointed as new administrator the Endeavour Park grounds will come alive from 6pm Friday and 11am Saturday as team’s battle for supremacy.

This Friday night FNQ Football will host the Fillies’ grand final between JCU Strikers and Marlin Coast Rangers from 6pm on field 1, simultaneously on field two the men’s third division final will be played between the Leichhardt Lions and the Stratford Dolphins.

At 8.15 pm on field one, the men’s second division grand final will be staged between the Douglas Dragons and the Atherton Eagles A feast of football awaits spectators on Saturday October 5, with the grounds opening at 11am for the first

of the days grand finals in the premier youth division which pits the best youth players from across the region when the Mareeba Bulls come up against Innisfail Cutters.

At 2.30pm the Premier Ladies division takes centre stage as favourites Leichhardt Lions play against an ever-improving Edge Hill Tigers.

Bring your woollies for the evening session just in case, the men’s premier reserves grand final will be a blockbuster when the Mareeba Bulls take on the Stratford Dolphins at 5pm.

The final match of grand final day will be the Men’s Premier division with the two best teams competing in the final, Premiership winners Edge Hill Tigers up against the Marlin Coast Rangers, the match kicks off at 7.30pm.

Presentations will follow at the end of each grand final match.
