Lighting up the town
Pat Carver of Mareeba has been slowly building her collection of Christmas lights and decorations for over 10 years. “Our street (Fenwick Street) was a little bland, so I decided to start brightening it up at Christmas time,” she said. “It takes me about two months to get it all finished and it’s my way of showing some Christmas spirit and Christmas fun for all to enjoy. “Over the years, people have donated a lot of what you see here. I’m a pensioner – I can’t afford to buy these things new. “It’s wonderful to see the line up of cars each night coming to have a look; more people should do it.”

AREEBA Shire Council unanimously approved Springmount Raceway’s application for a material change of use last Wednesday morning, providing they comply with flagged criteria. In the application, the raceway (in conjunction with the Australian National Drag Racing Association) had requested greater time flexibility in
their approved racing hours, along with determining an appropriate number of race meets. With an emphasis on minimising noise for local residents, MSC planning officers recommended: “In an attempt to minimise noise impacts, it is recommended that the 14 proposed annual race meetings be reduced to 12, or one per month, particularly considering the requested addition of three standalone burnout competitions to the facilities annual events calendar.
“It is also recommended that the requested Friday operating hours of the full weekend car show be reduced from 9:00am - 10:00pm to 9:00am - 6:00pm which would be consistent with what was proposed in the applicant’s previous request to change development approval for DA/15/0005. “It is acknowledged that the development’s potential to impact on nearby residences will likely increase during the more noise sensitive evening hours of 6:00am - 10:00pm.
“For this reason, and given the uncertainty faced by Council throughout this decision making process, having only been provided predicted noise levels, it is considered reasonable to require the applicant, during a trial evening race/ burnout event, to commission at their expense, an on-ground noise impact assessment to determine actual noise levels experienced at nearby residences. Cheering up those in need By Justin Fris FOR many of us, Christmas is a time for family, food, good times and if you are lucky, some well deserved time off. But for others, there is another side. It is dark, gloomy, with little light at the end of the tunnel. It’s a scenario members of local community organisations see all too often. Lifeline Mareeba – and through the assistance of Coles – are doing their bit to help those in need have a brighter festive season, by providing Christmas food hampers. Don’t for one moment think that the overwhelming majority of people who access these services are on welfare; many have fell afoul of cost costing, inclimate weather and rising unemployment. Lifeline Mareeba manager Theresa Whiteing said that more and more ‘everyday’ Tablelands residents are shopping and accessing services through organisations such as Lifeline. THERE was excitement all round, when the winners of The Express’s 2015 ‘Shop Local Christmas’ promotion were drawn last Friday. There were three draws, with each lucky winner receiving $550 in vouchers from local stores who took part in the promotion. The winners were: Dannielle Atkinson from Mutchilba, who entered after shopping at Marama Jewellery in Mareeba, Leonie Gagezer from Glen Allyn, with her ticket from SPAR Malanda and Phil Clark of Atherton with his lucky ticket from Claude Cater Mensland in Mareeba, after purchasing an Akubra. The competition, which is run by The Express every year, is designed to encourage Tablelands residents to shop in local
businesses in the lead up to the Christmas period. The three winners, who were selected from a pool of about 10,000 tickets, can spend their vouchers at the 33 stores that participated in the competition. The Express Managing Editor Carl Portella said the annual competition had once again been embraced by Tableland shoppers and was an outstanding success. “The competition has been popular from the beginning and it’s great to see locals supporting locals – that’s what makes us a great community,” he said. “It’s very popular with both businesses and their customers because not only does it help keep money in this area, but people know they are helping keep the place they live in vibrant and economically strong.”

Staff support secret of success By Justin Fris BEHIND any top performer in state politics, there is an equally great team of dedicated administration and communications staff. Working in politics offers a raft of highs and lows. The hours are long, issues are varied and not many things are guaranteed. On election night, sitting members are not the only ones who ride every bump. Employment of loyal local staff is also on the line. Staff will commence election day employed and are busy at polling booths, but by 10pm that night, they could well be preparing to clear out their desks. Fortunately for Member for Dalrymple Shane Knuth and his hard working staff, this unwanted experience has eluded them so far. Mr Knuth is ably supported by dedicated staff in Atherton, Brisbane and Charters Towers, who all work in tandem to keep the electorate firing on all cylinders. Since re-elected for a third time in Dalrymple, Mr Knuth’s workload has increased tenfold. As one of four state independent crossbenchers, issues have grown in both number and severity. Dalrymple electorate Atherton staff member Kate Yeoman said 2015 had provided a unique environment.
Dalrymple electorate (Atherton office) staff – Tammy Mcllrath, Shane Knuth, Kate Yeoman and Sally Irvine are just a few members of Dalrymple’s ‘dream team’.
“The access to both departments and ministers has definitely increased this year,” she said. “There have been good lines of communication
all round.” Mr Knuth said the support that he received from all staff was extremely valuable; and it
Springmount racetrack changes
helped him have more time to spend with people within the electorate. “I believe in putting people first and having an opportunity to get to know them in their communities and develop their faith and trust,” he said. Mr Knuth has fought passionately across several issues during the year and the highs and lows of these outcomes are shared by staff. “To see our private members bill on sugar marketing pass and allow our farmers to have a win over the multinational millers – when only seven private members bill’s had previously been passed in over 158 years – was a real highlight,” he said. “I’d also like to praise the response from several ministers within the Palaszczuk Government who assisted with the Ravenshoe cafe explosion earlier this year.” He added that the role of an independent crossbencher was unique – with both himself and KAP colleague Robbie Katter (fellow crossbencher) addressing issues not confined to their electorates. “We are two MP’s, but we carry the same, if not more of a workload than constituents of the two major political parties,” he said. After a memorable year, Dalrymple’s ‘dream team’ will take a well deserved respite over the festive season and return with the same level of vigour, passion and heart.

From Page 1 “Further evening operations outside the trial race meeting will only be permitted if the suitably qualified acoustic consultant provides Council with a copy of the on-ground noise impact assessment including a statement that in their unequivocal professional opinion, the level of exceedance or potential noise impact on nearby residential receivers is acceptable. “Prior to its submission to Council, the onground noise impact assessment and professional opinion must receive a favourable peer review from an independent suitably qualified acoustic consultant.
“It is considered that the proposed traffic impacts can be adequately managed with conditions, in particular, the preparation and implementation of a traffic management plan, line-marking and signage improvements at the site entrance, and the use of traffic control personnel during race events. “When Springmount Road is eventually upgraded, traffic controllers may be dispensed with. Council may also review the need for traffic controllers following race meetings if they are found to be unnecessary.” Springmount Raceway Director Evan Yelavich said he was happy with the approval
and said that he was happy to continue working with all parties to ensure common desired outcomes. Mr Yelavich added that local residents (within a 5km radius of the track) will receive a 2016 events calendar, which will notify local residents of all dates. Ideally, these will be issued within the next fortnight. Springmount Park estate resident Paul Carpenter – who has raised concerns over the facility with the MSC – said he had written to Palaszczuk Government Environment Minister Stephen Miles in the aftermath of the MSC’s decision, advising him of specific concerns.

Wastewater overhaul plan starting to take shape THE Mareeba Shire Council officially announced ‘Downer Utilities Australia Ltd’ as the design and construction tender for the Mareeba Wastewater Plant. Priced at $13,724,840 (exclusive of GST) – MSC Mayor Tom Gilmore said he was confident that the project will benefit the region greatly. “The Mareeba sewerage treatment plant, which is more than 40 years old, is too small to cope with the size of the community let alone allow for growth. In addition, it has not met its environmental licence requirements for more than 20 years, leaving this community liable for significant penalties for environmental
damage,” he said. “This Council had been working diligently to rectify this situation for the last two years and today sees the culmination of these efforts. This involved a complete review of the proposal that previous councils had focussed on. We have moved away from the construction of a completely new wastewater treatment plant, estimate which four years ago was estimated to cost in excessive of $28 million,” Mayor Gilmore added. “What we have approved today, is a fully refurbished and modern treatment plant, capable of easily achieving environmental licence requirements.”

Council Christmas trees vandalised By Justin Fris IT is becoming overly apparent that a minority of residents on the Tablelands are intent on ruining the festive season for several of our communities. Recently, the Mareeba Shire Council purchased a series of new Christmas trees and spread them out across various communities throughout the shire. These included: Chillagoe, Dimbulah, Kuranda, Mt Molloy and Mareeba. Less than one week after the instalment of Kuranda’s tree, and small children were spotted climbing the tree – along with locals also noticing a four inch deep hole at the bottom, where it appears someone has put their foot through it. Efforts have since been made to improve the state of tree, to ensure that all within the Kuranda community didn’t miss out this festive season. Earlier in the week, MSC Mayor Tom Gilmore said that he was ‘seriously disappointed’ with those who had caused the vandalism. “Although there are no real large rips in the tree, it is already looking very tatty,” he said. “I’m seriously disappointed that these individuals have absolutely no respect whatsoever for Council property. “The MSC is proud to have provided the tree to the Kuranda committee – but it is also incumbent of the Kuranda community to take some responsibility as this behaviour is simply not acceptable.” MSC Deputy Mayor Jenny Jensen – who is a Kuranda resident and represents the area in Council – was also given an opportunity to comment and relay her concerns of the situation. Unfortunately for the purposes of this story, she declined to comment. This follows on from several incidents within the Tablelands Regional Council jurisdiction (Ravenshoe), where tinsel was ripped off power poles and the town’s tree was desecrated. Along with the greenery of the tree being ripped from its foundations, there were also sightings of used condoms hidden within some of the branches. The tree has since been repaired by a passing ‘Grey Nomad’ tourist, which was gratefully appreci-

ated by the community. TRC Mayor Rosa Lee Long was heartened by this gesture, but reaffirmed her stance on the perpetrators, urging them to ‘think before they act’. “I understand that the Ravenshoe community and a visitor to the region restored and repaired the damaged tree quickly and invited others to add their own decorations,” she said. “This shows the strong community spirit alive and well. If ongoing vandalism occurs to festive decorations we will not be able to continually replace damaged items due to the high costs.” She added: “Please think before you act. It is ratepayers’ hard earned money that has provided those decorations for the benefit of all.”

MEMBER for Dalrymple Shane Knuth has again proved his unwavering commitment to the agricultural industry. After the learning that the Palaszczuk Government had made changes to the Lotus Glen Prison milk supply, Mr Knuth lobbied successfully for it to be overturned, after lodging his concerns with state corrections department. Instead of supplying the facility with local milk, the Palaszczuk Government had opted to import UHT milk from New Zealand, in a bid to cut costs. Mr Knuth said: “You cannot make a decision like this to say: ‘OK, we’ll save a few cents, but we’ll give a kick in the guts to the industry that surrounds it.” Federal Member for Kennedy Bob Katter lauded the efforts of Mr Knuth – describing the Palaszczuk Government’s initial decision as ‘outrageous’. “This was an outrageous decision to import “treated” milk from New Zealand instead of buying it from a local dairy factory 30 minutes down the road,” he said. “This is a continuation of the lowest tender, free market policies that are putting Australia down so low that we’ll never be able to find our way up. “But Shane Knuth’s intervention has saved the day here for our local dairy farmers.”

Concerns over bridge safety By Justin Fris ONLY at a Tablelands Regional Council meeting would you see the first agenda item read out at 11.03am, instead of the scheduled start time of 9am. Presentations prior to a meeting are an equitable opportunity for local residents to put forward their concerns – but if Council is ineffective in managing this concept – it can turn into a farce like last Thursday. These segments need to be short, sharp and to the point. Not full of mindless wittering from some of the several presenters, which clearly doesn’t resonate well with any audience. The bulk of the concerns were in relation to the Wrights Creek Bridge and its short and long term future for vehicular traffic. Closed to vehicular traffic since October, local residents have been forced to use two ‘alternative’ routes – both narrow and extremely conducive to high speed traffic. This has caused a large amount of anxiety and unrest for the residents; therefore they attended in a bid to relay these concerns. Listed as Item 15 on the agenda, Council voted on option three (out of five options), which is summed up as follows: “Council supports the partial replacement of Wrights Creek Bridge and will seek funding to upgrade once a preferred design has been agreed taking into consideration the required load limit and feedback from neighbouring properties. “Works will be undertaken to re-open the bridge to pedestrians and cyclists un-
til construction of the replacement bridge is undertaken as well as investigating the possibility of reopening the bridge to vehicular traffic in the short term.” Les Rogers – arguably the finest presenter of the day – provided both logic and measure during his succinct dialogue with council. “We are all just average people,” he said. “And of course, I recognise the fact that like council members, we are all here to try and do a good job.” Mr Rogers outlined the significance on how certain information on the bridge had been portrayed to Council, providing a series of insightful maps and diagrams. Personalised descriptions of certain TRC governance processes were not spared during the presentation, with a few anxious and curious looks around the room from management and ratepayers alike. Once the discussion finally commenced, councillors began the tackle the issue from a variety of different angles. Item discussion was getting bogged down well and truly, before TRC CEO Ian Church was able to step in and simplify the process, by establishing clear and concise wording for the tabled motion. Post- meeting, Mr Rogers said he was very grateful for the TRC letting him present prior to the meeting and said he was hopeful that vehicular traffic could recommence in future. At 12.53pm, the meeting finally ended, with the curtain closing on a turbulent year for the TRC. Ratepayers are no doubt hoping that festive season goodwill can extend through to March 19, 2016. I am pleased to present a summary of the major activities and outcomes of the first 18 months of your new Mareeba Shire Council. This report doesn’t cover all of Council’s operations, but focusses on the steps taken to build a sustainable organisation and describes how the new Council has delivered essential services and managed assets for water, waste, sewerage, transport and parks and gardens. Merry Christmas & Happy New Year
With only two more sleeps until Christmas Day community leaders, churches and business from across our region and Queensland would like to wish all our readers a Merry Christmas and a safe and happy new year. ROSA LEE LONG Tablelands Regional Council Mayor
tom gilmore Mareeba Shire Council Mayor
With the festive season upon us and the year drawing to a close, it is time to reflect on the real meaning of Christmas and the special birthday that we celebrate at this time each year. It is also a time of giving and forgiving, a time to reflect on the countless examples of people helping others, from volunteering at local events, sporting or recreational groups, raising funds for those in need, assisting others gain new skills, improve their education or getting through a difficult period. I would like to personally express my gratitude to everyone who has given so generously this year. Christmas is also about relishing family, friends and enjoying great local food with those who are special in our lives. It is a time when we
On behalf of councillors and staff of the Mareeba Shire Council, I wish everyone a happy, holy, family Christmas; and may we all have a prosperous New Year. The Christmas message this year is mixed - that is to say that many people in our community are doing well, as we live in a thriving, rural community which offers the best of all worlds in terms of lifestyle, opportunity, sporting activity and, of course, our famous 300 days of sunshine. Regrettably, however, many thousands of square kilometres of our shire are drought declared; having now missed several good wet seasons. As a result, those people living in drought declared areas are facing the bleak prospect of another dry Christmas, and the possibility of another light wet season. Christmas, of course, is a time for reflection; reflection on the past year, on the comings and goings of our families and colleagues and, for some families, of course, the suffering of or loss of a loved one. Please also turn your thoughts to those people that donate their time and resources towards bringing joy and comfort to those less fortunate in our community at Christmas time. It is, therefore, important that we as a community stand beside those that suffer from the privations of drought or personal hardship and do whatever is available to us as individuals to ease the pain and to bring some joy over the Christmas period. May we all have a much-earned break, good cheer, family reunion and friendship to reinvigorate us all for the New Year.
remember those who live in faraway places, whom we don’t see very often. This is often the only time we say we haven’t forgotten you and think about you throughout the year. And so, on a festive note, on behalf of Council and Staff, I wish you all a very Merry Christmas and a safe and Happy New Year.
CARL PORTELLA The Express newspaper As we near the end of 2015, my message to our readers these holidays is to remember the little things that make life so great. Each year we seem to get busier and busier and as a result some of the simple joys that come with living in this extraordinary part of the world can be forgotten. That is the beauty of Christmas. It allows us, for a brief while, to reflect on the challenges we have faced, the adversity we have overcome as well as those moments of happiness and success. As a newspaper we are in the privileged position of being to able to share with you, our readers, the good times and the hard. In writing this message, I’ve spent considerable time flicking through file copies of The Express from this year and I am amazed as a region how we con-
tinue to meet any challenge asked of us. As a newspaper it has been a year of change and growth. We have expanded our coverage into the Cape region and the far reaches of the Southern Tablelands. We look forward to working closely with all communities during 2016. It has been gratifying how the Southern Tablelands community continue to embrace our newspaper and we look forward to continuing our commitment to quality reportage. Our offices will close on Wednesday December 23 and we will re open on Wednesday January 6, 2016. Our first edition is January 13, 2016. To all our readers, clients and contacts we wish you a safe and happy festive season and look forward to dealing with you all again in the new year.

Merry Christmas & Happy New Year
Warren Entsch MP Federal Member for Leichhardt My warmest Christmas wishes to you and your family, as we reach the end of what I consider to be a year of achievements across the Far North. A real game-changer was the release of the White Paper on Developing Northern Australia in June, which I updated Mareeba Chamber of Commerce members on soon after. We’re creating an investment-ready environment and focusing on infrastructure – Nullinga Dam, beef roads and critical road corridors like the Hann Highway to name just a few - that will dramatically increase the capacity of Northern Australia between now and 2035. The campaign for better mobile phone coverage by residents such as Bob Madden paid off this year, with news that the Speewah tower would be upgraded under the Mobile Black Spot Programme. The upgrade will also benefit Kuranda, the State Forest and Kowrowa. Koah put in an application for an upgrade but wasn’t successful in this round, so I’ll make sure it’s considered under Round 2. I was pleased with the Federal Government’s decision to approve the Mt Emerald Wind Farm with 35 strict environmental conditions. The Tableland region will receive direct economic benefits both in construc-
tion-related spending and employment, and through the ability to generate enough energy on its doorstep to power 75,000 homes every year. I congratulate local councils that have been successful in the latest National Stronger Regions Fund round. Tableland Shire Council will receive $1m towards the $2m upgrade of water infrastructure at Millstream, and Mareeba Shire Council will benefit from a $5m investment into the redevelopment of the Mareeba Aerodrome – an $18m project. There are plenty of issues I’ll continue to work on in 2016, including the proposal for irradiation facilities at Cairns Airport to enhance local growers’ ability to access international markets. You also can’t help but be excited by the ongoing upgrades to the Peninsula Development Road and the proposals for additional water storage at Lakeland and the solar farm. In all, we’ve certainly started to move and I congratulate all those who have played a leadership role. On behalf of myself, my wife Yolonde and family, I again wish you a happy and safe Christmas and a prosperous 2016, and I look forward to spending some time amongst the Tableland community in the New Year.

Our Shire appears to be heading for a long dry summer and rural land owners are encouraged to make application now for drought assistance if they are within the recently drought declared areas. Those outside the drought declaration can apply for Individually Droughted Property status. Work is going ahead on the Peninsula Development Road and the recently approved South of Embley/ Amrun project is offering road construction crews and equipment more work - and service and accommodation is booming in Laura, Coen and the roadhouses. We are eagerly anticipating the so-
lar project at Lakeland, the national broadband network rollout and the expanded mobile black spot program in the new year. In Cooktown there is ongoing business and amenity development aligned to our safe, family friendly and progressive mantra. New and expanding ventures in towns and properties across the Shire are a demonstration of confidence in our region which we will leverage against the national interest in Northern Australia. Sincere thanks to those volunteers, service agencies and businesses that deliver such great services to our regional area of influence. In many cases, the effort does not equal the personal return – but the offset reward is our lifestyle and our fabulous place – and each one of us can be justifiably proud of our contribution.

ATHERTON MEALS ON WHEELS
pastor darryl roos Abundance Life Centre The atmosphere is once again being filled with joy of excitement as people plan to meet together to swap gifts, eat, drink and celebrate the richness of family and friends. It is a wonderful time of the year, but the question also rises again to each of us: “What does Christmas mean to me?” Some choose not to celebrate because they know it is about the birth of Jesus; while some do not care, but embrace the holiday. Then there are those who proclaim loudly the words that an angel spoke to Mary – “He will be great. He will be called the son of the highest, He will be given the throne of his father David. He will reign over the house of Jacob forever. His kingdom will never end.” John the baptist had a clear revelation that: “Jesus was the lamb of god who takes away the sin of the

world.” But in the last days of his life he began to doubt and send his disciples to Jesus asking: “Are you the one or should we look for another?” Jesus answered: “Go and tell John the things you hear and see. “The blind receive their sight and the lame walk. The lepers are cleansed and the deaf hear; the dead are raised up and the poor have the gospel preached to them. And blessed is he who is not offended because of me.” This question has to be answered by all of us. Are you like John and your faith needs strengthening, or are you like Nicodemus searching to know the truth? Whatever your situation, I pray that Jesus would be revealed to you as the one who came not to condemn you but that through him you might be saved. May each of you have a blessed Christmas and a prosperous 2016.
As the 2015 year comes to a close, we would like to advise that we greatly appreciate the generous support that we continue to receive from our local farming enterprises and community organizations. In early December, our family of Meals on Wheels staff, volunteers and supporters, came together to celebrate our combined efforts and the Christmas spirt at a special lunch. It was also an opportunity for our coordinator Pat Gane and the committee to thank all those who helped in so many ways during 2015 to fulfill our mission to provide healthy nutritous meals and friendship to those in need across our local communities. Recently, we have received further continued support from the Atherton Lions Club in the form of a $500.00 donation. Due to falling membership (because of age and ill health) the Atherton Seniors Group no longer operate and have donated $1000.00 to our service. We say many thanks for this extra monetary support. Since we cover a large area to deliver meals we certainly need at this time extra support to do deliveries. If you can offer some support in this area we would love to hear from you, so just give Pat a call on 40 911 686.
“We would like to extend to everyone our very best wishes for a wonderful Christmas and a healthy, prosperous and wet New Year.”
My staff and I would like to wish you and your families a very safe and happy Christmas. We are very appreciative of all who have supported us this year and we are very grateful for all those we have had the pleasure of working with. This year has been an eventful one for everyone and tough for those struggling with the ongoing drought. I wish you all the best during this season. I specifically want to acknowledge the community of Raven-
shoe and the work the surrounding communities for all the work that they did to assist recovery after this tragedy. As Christmas draws near, no matter your situation I trust we will all find time to forget the stresses of life, go fishing, camping and spend time with our family. I wish you all a happy and holy Christmas and trust you will be able to spend valuable time with family and loved ones during this break.

Merry Christmas & Happy New Year
Opposition Leader Lawrence Springborg
Since the election in January, we have been working hard every day to win back Queensland’s confidence and re-engage with the community. All year, the Shadow Ministry, (including myself and the Deputy Opposition Leader) have travelled the length and breadth of this State, talking to Queenslanders. I have personally visited Mareeba at least three times - meeting with people from all walks of life including business leaders, farmers, volunteer fire fighters, tourism operators and even had the chance to check out the Mareeba Saleyards. Speaking to locals on the street, it is clear the LNP moved too quickly while in government; without taking Queenslanders along for the journey. We have listened and heard the message loud and clear. The antidote for doing too much too quickly certainly cannot be doing nothing at all; and after 10 months in office, Premier Palaszczuk still has no plan for jobs, the economy or frontline services. As I listen to the feedback from locals, they are concerned Queensland is going backwards under the Palaszczuk Labor Government. In
stark contrast, the LNP has the track record and the plan to unleash this State’s true potential. We have been delivering a positive legislative agenda concentrating on issues that matter to Queenslanders. We kept our promise to stand up for farmers, delivering a positive outcome for Queensland’s sugar industry. It was the LNP that led the charge to review the state’s electoral redistribution process after 30 years, seeking to ensure residents in rural and regional areas, such as electorates like this one, were being effectively represented by their Member of Parliament. The electorate of Cook and the people of Mareeba deserve a Member of Parliament that stands up for the community. Unfortunately, the current Member has been missing in action and the community deserve better. The LNP in 2016 will continue to be an active presence in your community, listening to your concerns and representing them in the Parliament to the best of our ability. On behalf of the LNP Parliamentary team, I wish you and your families a very happy and Merry Christmas. Enjoy a safe and relaxing break and I look forward to vising Mareeba again in 2016.
QUEENSLAND Premier Annastacia Palaszczuk As a busy and eventful year draws to a close and the annual festive season approaches, it is an opportunity to reflect on the year that has passed and also to look forward to the one ahead. As Premier, I have been especially conscious this year of how we not only live in a State of great natural beauty and vast size, but also one of great extremes, with events such as floods and cyclones inflicting widespread damage and testing the mettle of our communities. We end 2015 with large areas of our State in the grip of a punishing drought.
This has been a catastrophic experience for communities right across Queensland, and particularly those in the west and the outback. Visiting these droughtaffected areas, I have seen first-hand families who have been on the land for generations forced into debt and with no option but to euthanase their livestock. It has been heart-wrenching, to say the least. As we approach Christmas and a time of celebration for families, I would ask all Queenslanders to take time to spare a thought for those families in drought-affected areas who do not have much to celebrate. I wish the The Express Newspaper and all its readers a happy Christmas and a rewarding new year.

Merry Christmas & Happy New Year
Archdeacon Chris Wright Anglican Church The news has been dominated in the last few years by terrorist attacks in many parts of the world, which culminated in the shocking attack in Paris. We find it hard to understand the mindset of people who could behave in such a way. We worry about what all this means for the future of the world and its peace. It seems that there are those who are determined to undermine the world we know and plunge us into another dark age. Countering that threat is not going to be an easy task in the future; and will require more than bombs and war. At Christmas, we think of the song of the angels: ‘Glory to God in the highest and peace on earth to those with whom he is pleased’. How does the birth of a baby two thousand years ago contribute to the peace of the world? It is obvious that his birth didn’t bring a miraculous end to the conflicts of the world. Since then, we have invented some pretty nasty weapons of mass destruction.
At that first Christmas, the song of the angels celebrated the arrival of one whom the angel had claimed to the shepherds as a ‘saviour’. It is as we see the impact of Jesus as saviour in individual lives, that we see how that begins to affect the wider scene. Jesus comes as saviour to us. He became man in order to ‘save’ us - to rescue us from the problem of our failure - just the sort of thing seen in the world’s conflicts and divisions. He came to reconcile us to God. On the cross, he faced the violence and anger of humanity, but we also believe he bore the separation from God which results from our sin. As a result we can be forgiven. We can be restored to a relationship with God. We can experience the power of his love in our lives. The experience of forgiveness and the love of God is something, which begins to change our lives. Those who have been forgiven learn to forgive.

Those who have been loved learn to love others. We begin to learn from God how he would have us live. Individuals who are learning to live in God’s way begin to affect the society in which they live. It is the nations which have experienced the influence of Christians in their history who should be the upholders of peace and of loving others; but alas, that seems a long way from reality in 2015. Those values, should seem self-evident, but not everyone shares those values, as we have seen. We could easily lose those values ourselves if our nation continues to turn its back on Christian teaching and values. Jesus does bring peace to humanity – peace to individuals as they find peace with God and peace in the world as they seek to live in harmony with others. The message of the birth of a Saviour is one, which the world very much needs to hear this Christmas.

Members of the 2016 Ravenshoe Meals on Wheels committee.
By Justin Fris RAVENSHOE Meals on Wheels has a much brighter future, after their new committee was successfully endorsed. Due to an initial lack of support from the community, the future of this valued service was very much on a knife’s edge. At the time, Ravenshoe MOW President Alex Sinclair urged the community to look deep into their hearts and help preserve this valued service. “We are considering hiring a part-time convener to oversee operations and ensure that the high standards that have been implemented over the past three years continue,” he said. “We provide high quality healthy and wholesome food - all made
with love.” With their plight out in the public arena - members of the community stepped forward - with the following committee positions filled: Alex Sinclair (President), Amie Duck (Vice-President), Anne Vosoba (Secretary), Tom Vosoba (Treasurer) and Cate Teece (Office Coordinator). The service provided by Ravenshoe MOW is more than just providing a hearty meal. It’s about camaraderie, spirit, goodwill and helping those in need. With an aging population, these services underpin communities across the Tablelands. Long may they continue to provide assistance to those who seek them - and may you all have a great festive season.
Rev. Peter Blauw Mareeba Uniting Church When I was growing up, our family camped at the beach over the Christmas holidays. We were like many thousands of other families who pitched their tent side by side, so that you could barely walk between the tents. Tenting neighbours who didn’t even know each other before they arrived at the camping ground, shared space, food, chairs, light; and minded each other’s children. If a storm came along and a tent was damaged or leaked, one of the neighbours would either help to repair or give their neighbour shelter for the night. That picture comes to my mind as I hear the gospel of John, which said: “The word became flesh and dwelt
among us.” Jesus came and pitched his tent amongst us. He did not just set up somewhere else, but was (and still is) right alongside us. He came to share the joy, hope and also the pain we all go through. I think that is why we are drawn to be together as family and friends at Christmas time. We need to share the joy and hope we have with each other and we are allowed the opportunity to also share in the pain. May this Christmas be a wonderful opportunity to share with each other God’s joy and love and the New Year bring much more hope. Our Christmas Day Service is at 8.00 am.

Merry Christmas & Happy New Year
Fr. John Sullivan (Pastor St Thomas’s, Mareeba & St Anthony’s, Dimbulah) I have lived the past 26 years in South Korea, where the big family get-together days are in January / February for the ‘Lunar New Year’ and in September/October for the ‘Harvest Full Moon’. Millions of people head off from Seoul and other big cities to their home villages in the countryside, where the families celebrate together with lots of food and visit the graves of their ancestors. There is no official religion in South Korea - nevertheless, the birthdays of both Christ and the Buddha are kept as public holidays, but they are not family days as described above. Of course, Christians, who form 28 per cent of the population, celebrate in their churches, while the general populace is really just fascinated by the warmth and fun generated by the season; the prevailing figure being a jolly Santa Claus or ‘Santa Granddad’ as he is called in Korean. And the young people especially like to buy presents for their friends and greet one another with a ‘Merry Christmas.’ Coming back to Australia, I realise that for many Australians, Christmas is no longer kept as a religious festival; but is surely the most important family gettingtogether time of the year where the giving and receiving of gifts forms an essential part. And Santa Claus, like in South Korea, is the dominant figure rather than the Christ child; and ‘Jingle Bells’ is thought to be a Christmas carol. Unsurprisingly, for both Australian and Korean christians, the focus is on that child. Were we to ask them if there is a God, what is that God like? They would simply point to Mary holding the child to her breast, an image which portrays love, warmth, nurturing and security. There is nothing fearsome or frightening about a tiny baby. God is like that, they would say. That’s how close God is to us.
HON BOB KATTER MP Member for Kennedy S ai n t Nicholas was the king of a tiny little German Duchy – and he decided that on Christmas Day, he would take presents around to the poor people – so he spent all of his Christmas Day going from house to house visiting the poor. We refer to him today as Santa Claus. He believed this was the best way to celebrate the birthday of Jesus Christ. It is accepted that the six greatest scientists in human history are Pasteur, Newton, Einstein, Galileo,
Mendel and Faraday. Faraday was a minister in what we now call the Uniting Church; Mendel was a monk, who spent his life in a monastery; Einstein’s famous quote is that: “I want to know God’s thoughts, all the rest is irrelevant”; Newton wrote seven books on theology; and Pasteur said: “My great ambition in life was to achieve the simple Christian faith of a bread and fisher woman”. We must remind ourselves that amongst all these presents and commercial promotion – that Christ was born in a shed out the back of a pub with a couple of ringers who came in to try and help out. I’m sure that Jesus would not object to tinsel and glitter; he might feel a little bit out of place, but he’d want us all to have fun. The world was a different place and as those beautiful carols ring out ‘Joy to the World, the Lord has Come’.

Atherton Tablelands Baptist Church “Glory to God in the highest, and on earth peace to men on whom his favour rests.” PEACE ON EARTH On behalf of Atherton Tablelands Baptist Church, my prayer this Christmas Season is that we will truly know “peace on earth” as individuals and communities. Amazingly the announcement of the birth of the saviour Jesus was given by the angels to lowly shepherds. The Messiah- Christ (saviour)

anticipated by the jews for centuries could have been heralded to the kings and rulers of the country or at least to those in significant public positions and yet God in his plan for the world chose the shepherds. They were to be the first on the visitors list at the manger to see the new born king. I have no doubt that God chose the shepherds to emphasise that this ‘good news of great joy’ was for everyone no matter how important or not they were. In God’s sight, we are on equally standing. The promise of ‘peace on earth’ which so many people hope for in our world today is for everyone

with only one condition – ‘to men on whom his favour rests’. God’s grace (unmerited favour) rests on those who respond in faith to Jesus as the saviour of the world and willingly allow him to be master of their lives. This promise has been fulfilled in countless millions of lives over the past two millennium for those who have willingly surrendered their lives to Jesus as the saviour of the world. This promise is yet to be fulfilled for many more who need to allow Jesus control of their lives. My prayer is that you will personally know the prince of peace this Christmas.
The Christmas Angel (A true story), by John G. Lake A great shouting of the drivers and a mighty cracking of whips indicates that they are endeavouring to stop the team. The owner of the wagon shouts “Outspan,” meaning unhitch, and the men proceed to loose the oxen and turn them out for pasture. The others prepare supper on a fire built near the wagon. We are just preparing to spread our blankets and lie down for the night when, another wagon is seen to be approaching. When it comes close, one of the men in the party accompanying the wagon asked us if he may talk. We all sit together while he tells us at great length that his brother, a sick man, is in the wagon along with his aged mother. Many moons ago a missionary had come to their hut and talk to the sick brother of one, called Jesus, who saves humanity from their sins and healed them of diseases. He said “We are seeking for him.” The man told us that four days before, an angel came to his brother in the hut as he slept, and taking him by the shoulder awoke him, saying: “come with me”. Then the angel took him by the arm and led him out of the hut and down the road a short distance to where the two roads divided. Pointing down the road to the right the angel said: “Go three days on this road; cross the great river and on the third evening, when the sun is set, you will find some men camping by a wagon. They are missionaries. They will pray for you and you will be healed of your sickness.” In the morning the young man, believing it to be a dream told his mother. But the younger brother said “Perhaps it is God’s angel that has come to my brother.”
So the oxen were hitched to the wagon; and the sick man was laid upon it. For three days they laboriously travelled over the mountains of South Africa, looking to fulfil the angel’s words. We were greatly impressed by the simplicity and sincerity of the brother’s statement, when he had finished relating to us his story; we accompanied him to the wagon where the sick man lay. Looking into the beautiful heavens and realizing that possibly at that very hour, under the same beautiful skies of Palestine the Christ had been born, and the shepherds had listened to the angelic host’s, message “Peace on earth, good will to all men,” We reverently obeyed the word of Christ, laid our hands upon the sick man, praying that the power of God should come upon him and heal him of his terrible disease and enlighten his spirit with a knowledge of God and his love. His face changed. The peace of God was in him, the virtue of Jesus flowed through him and his pains were all gone. He fell asleep… and arose totally healed of his leprosy. Christmas morning, he bid us goodbye, saying: “I am going home to tell all my people of your Jesus and how he healed me; and of your Christmas angel, and of the power of your wonderful God, who has made me well again. We proceeded on our journey rejoicing that the angel had led the way to the healing and saving Christ. After all Jesus of the reason for the season. Have an awesome Christmas and an incredible New Year, from the the Church of Living Waters Mareeba.

The Budd family, Mareeba residents and keen onlookers were also given an opportunity to pay their respects. Born in Murwillumbah, NSW, in 1935, Rex was a decorated war hero and Vietnam veteran. He is also widely regarded as the true ‘pioneer’ of the helicopter mustering industry in Queensland. More coverage from the ceremony will be included in our first edition of 2016, which hits newsstands on January 13.

Sensational season of 6-a-side football in Mareeba By Justin Fris
THE Mareeba United Football Club was jam packed with football supporters last Friday night, for the finals of the local ‘Social 6-a-side’ football competition. With the terraces brimming with expectancy and a multitude of matches on at any given time, fans were treated to a splendid evening on and off the pitch. In the Men’s A-grade final, Mareeba MAZDA staged a heroic comeback, defeating the Chewko Warriors 3-2. The Warriors bossed the contest from the off, but had little to show for it on the scoreboard. Once netting an early lead, complacency ap-
peared to creep in. MAZDA managed to score an equaliser only moments after the break, and appeared to have all the running down the stretch. 2015 FNQ Heat striker Jamie Carroll – who was goalkeeper during his game – then made two serious blunders which ultimately cost his side the game. Keen to move beyond his own half, Carroll was dispossessed twice in as many minutes, with two pacy counterattacks paying off for MAZDA midway through the half. To be fair, he would reduce the deficit five minutes from time, after his smartly taken strike slotted into the bottom right hand corner. MAZDA managed to negotiate a nervy finish

and celebrated post-match with friends and family all around. In the Ladies A-grade final, the Powerpuffs showed no mercy in their 3-0 win over the Red Hot Chilli Peppers. For the Peppers, their enthusiasm and application to the contest was fantastic – they were simply hampered by having no genuine attacking threat. The B-grade ladies final saw a win to the Gypsies, who capped off a memorable year by defeating the Red M and M’s. In the B-grade Men’s final, Laser Electrical overcame a sluggish start against the Barras to record a comfortable 3-1 win. C and D grade finals went the way of Mean
Machine and the Muffen Men, who were delighted with their share of the spoils. MUFC president Tamara Srhoj – one of many dedicated volunteers over the season – said she was really heartened by the experience over the season. “Tonight was a really great evening for our finals,” she said. “This season we had over 30 teams compete, which works out to be around 250 registered players. “The competition is really inclusive and we’ve encouraged players of all ages and abilities to participate. We’ve even seen players travel down from Cairns.” MUFC will commence their pre-season training in the new year.

Panetta returns home to Mareeba
ABOVE: Mareeba United Football Club’s junior bulls enjoyed an afternoon of football and fun with Nicholas Panetta. RIGHT: Robbie Soncin listens intensely to what Nicholas had to say on Sunday. By Justin Fris
HUMBLE Australian Joeys U/17 footballer Nicholas Panetta returned to his hometown of Mareeba on Sunday, where he spent time with those who’ve followed his journey. The journey culminated in a recent trip to Chile, where he played a major role in the Australia’s impressive U/17 World Cup campaign. Australia was paired with arguably one of the most difficult groups (Argentina, Germany, Mexico) ever drawn for an international football tournament. Despite the enormity of the challenge, Panetta said belief was high in Tony Vidmar’s squad. “We knew we had all of the big teams in our group, but we knew if we could get good results,
we could get through,” he said. Australia would taste defeat in their opening group match against Germany, where they would lose 4-1. They would rebound quickly and secure a 0-0 draw against Mexico, before defeating Argentina 2-1. Panetta scored the winner against Argentina, which saw Australia qualify for the ‘Round of 16’ against defending U/17 World Cup holders Nigeria, who crushed them 6-0. Nigeria would go on and defeat Mali 2-0 in the final. Each side provided their own unique tactical nuances, especially in terms of marking in the box. As a striker, Panetta is required to place himself in the best possible spot to score for his side, while negating tight marking defenders. While Argentinian and Mexican players sat
back a little at times, the German defence was a lot more determined to press and counter. Defenders often have a tendency to pull out all stops in a bid to stop effective strikers like Panetta, however he does his best to keep calm at all times. “I often like to have a quick glance at the goalkeeper and see where he is positioned,” he said. “Defenders can sometimes pull on your shirt or even step on your toes – but if a defender does that to me, I’ll change positions with someone else. “If I miss a chance, it’s important to just forget about quickly and move on – and not to dwell on any mistakes.” Panetta’s parents Tony and Maria joined hundreds of vocal Australian supporters in the grand-
stands and were proud to see their son shine on the big stage. Preparation for the World Cup wasn’t ideal initially, with Nicholas battling injury prior to the tournament. Excellent communication and conditioning from both coaching and conditioning staff assured him a speedy recovery. Currently based in Brisbane, Panetta trains several times a week in a bid to further fine tune his game. It’s an exciting period of his life, as the prospect of playing in the A-League is very real. But on Sunday, it was all about family and friends for Nicholas and his family. The two foundation blocks of football of which we cherish so dearly.
Bumper ‘Boxing Day’ at Mareeba Turf Club
Photo by Peter Roy The Mareeba Turf Club will be the place to be on Boxing Day with racing, fashion and fun all day. By Justin Fris
ON Boxing Day in Mareeba, there is only one alternative for quality sporting entertainment – the Mareeba Turf Club. Held each year, the Boxing Day races are easily one of the most anticipated events held in the region and despite recent proposed cuts to country racing by the Palaszczuk Government, it will still fire on all cylinders. Mareeba Turf Club secretary John Thurlow said demand and popularity indicators for the event were already really positive. “Our race meetings have a real community feel,” he said. “Boxing Day really is our make or break event as it sets us up for the entire year.

“I’ve already got 50 marquees booked for the day and there will be plenty of entertainment (band CARELESS), ‘Fashions on the Field’, cold drinks and activities (water slides) for the kids.” There are great prizes up for grabs in the Fashions on the Field event with a children’s fashion parade and categories for teens, ladies and men. Another highlight of the day will be the annual Boxing Day ‘Galloping Human Horse Race’, which will be held after the last race. Gates open at 11am and admission on the day is $10 for Adults, Pensioners $5 and U/16’s are free of charge. Bar facilities will be open until 8pm; however the Mareeba Turf Club will be adhering to a 5pm lock out.

“Rohan Foxwell was our highest run scorer with 68 not out”. “The bowlers also had a good day with Adam Roy showing figures of 3 for 26 off 10 over’s. “The club now has a three week Christmas break and our next match will be on Sunday, January 10.”
