IMBULAH has done more than its fair share of hard yakka over the years and now many key stakeholders believe it is time for those in power to return the favour. Iconic local stakeholders Mick Borzi and Gaye Taylor have led a chorus of Tablelands residents who are keen for a new health clinic to be built in Dimbulah. Over 150 people attended a community meet-

ing at the Dimbulah Town Hall on September 14, with the likes of Shane Knuth (Member for Dalrymple) and Bob Norman (former Cairns and Hinterland Health Hospital chair) presenting at the meeting. During the meeting, Mr Norman said: “In many instances, locals assume the current facility is a hospital – it is in fact a health care facility – a first aid post if you will. “We’ve been looking at the facility for a number of years; acknowledging that it is due

for a complete rebuild. If we had the money, we would start building immediately.” Mr Norman has since tendered his resignation from the CHHHS board, however acting chair Carolyn Eagle said the board’s commitment to the project would remain unchanged. “The Health Board remains committed to working with the Government to progress an upgrade of Dimbulah Primary Health Clinic,” she said. “The health facility in Dimbulah is extremely

old and no longer provides adequate functional space to deliver modern health care. “While it is an older facility, it is an important service for local people and to the many visitors to the region. “The Health Service remains in discussions with the Department of Health to progress a replacement facility for Dimbulah and will continue to maintain the building as part of usual business.” CONTINUED PAGE 3

Cheerleaders’ national success

By Justin Fris

FOR 18 talented students from Kuranda State District College (the Kuranda Stars), a recent trip to Brisbane was extra cheerful. The Stars – who had been preparing for the National Schools Cheerleading Championships for two years – achieved national silverware success against quality metro and interstate opposition. Kuranda Stars member (and assistant manager) Michelle Cook said the unique factor about the squad was the fact they consider themselves as a ‘family’, rather than a ‘team’. Each routine was awarded or deducted points in relation to essential criteria, with Cook outlining some key skills that catch the judging panel’s attention. “Mainly the girls’ facial impressions,” she said. “Their strength and also their movements. For the kick routines, they really need to have positive impressions for the photographers.” Prior to a major tournament, the girls will arrive well before their routine and ensure they are stretched and ready to go. A little bit of light humour and conversation is also a trend which has generated several fruitful outcomes in the past. Cook added that the girls would be returning to defend their title next year and would continue to work on their skills in the meantime. The success was also recognised by Mareeba Shire Council last Wednesday morning, with Mayor Tom Gilmore and fellow councillors delighted about their achievement.

Members of the Kuranda Stars (Kuranda State District College) are delighted about their national success in cheerleading.

By Justin Fris A vision of caring for your eyes in a safe and comfortable forum greeted fresh faces in Mareeba last Thursday morning, as part of Mareeba’s commemoration to ‘World Sight Day’. Facilitated by the Mareeba Lions Club, students at St Thomas’s Parish School were able to receive a free vision screening test, which were all provided free of charge by local optometrist, John Holme. Mareeba’s commemoration marked similar events which were held around the globe, with the primary outcome of preventing eye disease and the Lions’ committed to promoting community wellbeing. “Vision screenings are an important first step towards preventing and treating eye disease. Our activities in Mareeba represent Lions’ global efforts to provide vision services,” said Lions Mareeba President David Mills. Mareeba Lions club member Tom Braes added: “Out of the 35 children examined, six were found to have issues that require further assessment. “Parents will be advised by the school and encouraged to follow up the initial screening with further testing.” These vision screening sessions are essential for young children, as they have the ability to pick up any potential issue that can occur – with steps in place to rectify it. Mr Holme said he loved the concept of the event, but advised that it was important to maintain regular testing outside of the vision screen session. “We normally donate a day’s fees (toward Optometry

to undertake a full check, with checkups every two years thereafter – providing no evident issues arise. St Thomas’s Assistant Principal (for Religious Education) Kathy Fleming said the students enjoyed receiving the screen sessions on the day; and the event provided an excellent opportunity to foster community and student partnership ties.

New health facility ‘a must’ scheme of things is a few crumbs. “On average, it is estimated that it costs $6-7 million per day to run a Brisbane hospital – so our amount is really chicken feed.” Mr Knuth added: “This project has the support of the MSC, community groups, the CHHS, along with strong community backing.” The Independent Member for Cook, Billy Gordon, was invited to attend the meeting; however he was unavailable to attend. Mr Borzi has forwarded Mr Gordon the minutes and various documents from the meeting; however, is still to receive a response. Mr Knuth confirmed that he had spoken with Mr Gordon on the matter - with the latter saying he would support efforts to improve the facility. Publically, Mr Borzi has advised local stakeholders and residents that he will not be seeking re-election for the MSC in 2016 and hopes that local residents can support the Dimbulah township’s bid for an improved health care facility that they deserve. “Join with me in an unrelenting effort to have this facility become a reality as quickly as possible,” he said.

Mr Borzi – a passionate advocate for local health services said: “I chair a committee at the hospital (Coag- 19.2, exemption governance committee). We are all doing it on a voluntary basis. “There are local GP’s, hospital doctors and hospital staff that are involved with it, along with business community people.” He added: “It’s been going for some eight or nine years. At that, I’m aware of the situation at Dimbulah and the building can’t cope with the numbers that go through it. “To enlarge the building is going to be extremely difficult, because it has asbestos in it. The best thing is to take that building away and build a new one.” Along with the meeting, Mr Borzi spoke about how a local petition on the matter had received a positive response, since it had been circulated in the region. “A community without adequate health facilities has a major problem,” he said. “We can be short of many other things – but a health facility is a must.

Dimbulah’s current health facility is in need of an upgrade, with support mounting.

“For that reason, I’ve always believed that health comes first.” Member for Dalrymple Shane Knuth said the present health unit in Dimbulah was well ‘past its used by date’ and that he was keen

for an announcement on the project before the 2016 State Budget. “In reality, smaller hospitals take the pressure off the bigger hospitals,” he said. “All we are asking for is $1.2 million – which is in the

If you live within the MSC region and would like to recycle your garbage, you are able to do so at many established and available facilities, such as the Mareeba Transfer Station.

By Justin Fris MAREEBA Shire Council ratepayers have overwhelming voted in favour of not opting in to the MSC’s ‘Voluntary Domestic Kerbside Collection’ program. Only 323 positive responses were received from the opt-in online survey (out of 6393), falling well short of the 50 per cent target required to commence the program. Of the positive responses received for the program, 48 per cent were from Mareeba, which equated to 138 ratepayers. Although it should be noted that despite this decision, ratepayers still have existing opportunities available to recycle within the MSC ju-

risdiction, at their local landfill transfer station. Cr Jenny Jensen said she believed the findings from the survey indicated that ratepayers objected to the cost, rather the overall process of a kerbside recycling collection. “I don’t think this survey indicates that people don’t want recycling,” she said. “I think the community indicates that having to pay is the public concern.” Cr Jensen added that the model of ‘opt in’ clearly hadn’t been successful with ratepayers and she called on more education-based concepts on the matter to be rolled out by Council on the matter. Mayor Gilmore said a number of people in the community may be unaware of the current recycle services offered within

MSC. This sentiment was echoed by Cr Nipper Brown, who said communication of services at local transfer stations could be proved. “We roughly get one tonne (of recycling) a week from Kuranda,” he said. “Whereas in the other overlying areas, there is not that much. “If we start at education program, it has to begin with what we have available.” MSC CEO Peter Franks said: “There’s a misconception in the community that (ratepayers) they need to sort their recycling. That is incorrect. “The recycling doesn’t need to be put in a plastic bag – it can be mixed, because it is mixed and sent down to Cairns and goes through their recycling process.”

It’s an all ages event, so everyone can come along and have some fun.” Those in attendance will not only be able to enjoy ample food and entertainment, but also be able to look at quality vintage hot rods and motorbikes. “We hope to have as many cars and bikes

MAREEBA State High School will be hosting their annual sports presentation night on Friday evening at the Mareeba International Club. Amongst the audience will be one of Australian cricket’s greatest ever allrounders, Andrew Symonds, who is the evening’s guest speaker. Symonds was highly regarded in the international one day format of the game for his explosive strokeplay, notching up 5088 (an average of 39.75) runs from 198 one day internationals. He also represented Australia at both Test and T20 level. At the wicket, he was deadly with the willow (bat). Supporters in the stands always needed to keep their eye on the ball when ‘Roy’ was at the crease. He was also more than handy with the ball (133 wickets in 198 ODI’s, best outing 5/18), with his finger spinning off breaks tightening both run rates and batting stances. However many will fondly remember his outstanding application and enthusiasm to fielding. Alongside former South African great Jonty Rhodes, Symonds is arguably international cricket’s

greatest ever fieldsman. Newly appointed Principal Scott Whybird said he was excited about such a fantastic opportunity being provided to the students. “Most schools I’ve been to have never had such a thorough sports presentation like Mareeba,” he said. “I think it is a credit to the school that it actually happens. Sometimes I think sports presentation evenings can sometimes overwhelm even the academic evenings. “This is a bit unique and a really great program that they have here.” Mr Whybird added that many successful students who had excelled at MSHS were well renowned for being good people – which is a trait he admires. “The passion that sport gives us as people – once you are really involved in it, you give so much back and it is so important that this legacy continues.” The 2015 Mareeba State High School sport presentation evening will be held this Friday evening from 7pm at the Mareeba International Club. If you would like further information, please contact the school on 4086 2777.

I have been a member of Curves Atherton since August 2007. I joined in my 60’s as, although physically active, I needed to increase my cardio fitness and work on retaining my bone density and strength. After doing some research, I decided Curves would be ideal for achieving these goals. The effectiveness of the training was proven when I joined the Curves team in the 2013 Great Wheelbarrow Race (149km Mareeba - Chillagoe), completing the race ONE WEEK BEFORE MY 67TH BIRTHDAY. Late 2014, I was diagnosed with a very aggressive grade 3 breast cancer. Through early detection, I have made a full recovery. On diagnosis, I believed that as well as a positive mental attitude, it was more important

than ever to retain my fitness. I got through my treatment taking only 4 weeks off my Curves workouts. I’m now on a 5+ year hormone treatment - side effects being Osteoporosis, muscle and bone pain. My Oncologist was concerned I may not be a suitable candidate for this treatment due to my age - a bone strength and density test was required. He was AMAZED the test revealed I had excellent bone health, and since beginning the medication I have had no bone or muscle pain. And so I see that through the Curves program, I have achieved both goals set when I began in 2007. I acknowledge the importance of maintaining a healthy weight, but Curves offers a far more holistic outcome, as I have experienced.

Mareeba says no to ‘DV’

By Justin Fris

MAREEBA residents (pictured) and local stakeholders marched side by side last Thursday afternoon, sending a clear message to the Far North that domestic violence will not be tolerated in our community. 2015 has been a spate of high profile domestic violence cases rear their ugly head, with Mareeba joining other communities across the state in uniting against this blight crime on society. Beginning at ANZAC Park at noon, march participants were addressed initially by Mareeba Shire Council Mayor Tom Gilmore, after they had all received a white arm band from many of the councillors in attendance. Once in readiness, the solemn march worked its way along Byrnes Street, before winding in and out of Hort Street and concluding at Arnold Park on Walsh Street. Domestic violence is not only a problem in every community and every state, it is also our problem – as it doesn’t just directly impact one individual. Mayor Gilmore began the formalities (dubbed:#SaferFamilies) by commending those in attendance and advising that it was up to everyone to help reduce the imprint of domestic violence – and that the community doesn’t want to see this behaviour any more. “No community group is exempt – no race or background is exempt – we know that,” he said. “Underneath the trees here, I see a very broad cross section of the Mareeba Shire and I’m proud of you for coming.” Bernadette Moore – who is currently part of Mareeba’s ‘Street to Home’ program – has seen the impacts of domestic violence at the coalface, having worked and seen how domestic violence can impact individuals and families. Her words were passionate and sugar coat-

free. They spoke of not being a bystander to domestic violence and becoming more educated on the topic. Ms Moore also made a very telling point about the lack of affordable rental accommodation (current rental vacancy is approximately one per cent) in Mareeba – and how people needed to look at themselves to rectify this issue. “I’ve spent the last 13 years working at the DV crisis shelter and also working in the courts assisting women trying to fill out domestic violence applications and working very closely with the domestic violence liaison officer, Sergeant Andrew Osborne,” she said. Ms Moore added: “Everyone needs to know

all the support services and agencies that are out there to assist them and to not hang back.” Mareeba Police Senior Sergeant Derek Garner spoke about many of the realities that local police face when dealing with domestic violence. Snr Sgt Garner said many may be unaware that domestic violence is not simply physical abuse – it can be emotional, financial, intimidation or any form of harassment. MSC Cr Jenny Jensen – who apart from her current role as a councillor, has worked previously as a guidance counsellor - encouraged members of the community to educate themselves on DV and support those impacted by DV.

Young talent punctuates FNQ Country Music Festival Darryl Chaplain and Colleen Sheppard celebrate their win

By Justin Fris

THE emergence of young country music talent within the Far North has never been so evident, with crowds witnessing the full range of their ability at the weekends annual FNQ Country Music Festival, held at Kerribee Park. Over three solid days, country music lovers were treated to a full range of entertainment, from singing to bush poetry and everything in between. Walkamin Country Music Club president (and festival organiser) Darryl Chaplain said he was upbeat about the quality of younger performers over the weekend, which was a real highlight for him. “We had lots of numbers over the weekend – and ‘Brothers 3’ (former X-Factor group) have stayed on today for an impromptu performance after last night’s ‘Supa Show’,” he said. “We’ll continue to do our best and hopefully get big-

ger and better next year – the potential for this festival is amazing.” Perhaps the biggest winner of the day was Jack McDougall, who was awarded the ‘Mareeba Shire Council CMAA (Country Music Association of Australia) Scholarship’. In its 10th year, McDougall will attend the college in Tamworth, NSW, next year and continue to build on his impressive start to the industry. In the ‘Overall Open Winner’ category, Mr Chaplain and Colleen Sheppard were adjudged joint winners, while Phoebe Foster-Griffith was crowned ‘Overall Junior’ winner. Trophy space in the Foster-Griffith household will be at a premium this week, with young Owen Foster-Griffith victorious in the ‘Overall Juvenile’ competition. Additionally, Brendan Wright received the ‘Junior Encouragement’ award, with Tarryn Woodhard reciving honours in the ‘Juvenile Encouragement’ section.

Planting the seed of innovation By Justin Fris

WHETHER people freely admit it or not, plentiful young minds across the Tablelands are becoming few and far between. With high unemployment, an aging population, anti social behaviour and lack of facilities in certain towns, most young Tablelands residents pack their bags at age 18 and move elsewhere for greater opportunities. But what if there was a way that we could harness this talent and ensure that these individuals keep their creativity here? Well, Damian Zammit and Troy Haines (in conjunction with several local business stakeholders) from The SPACE (business consultancy) in Cairns are well on their way to making this a reality, through their exciting ‘Emerging Entrepreneurs’ program. The program is currently being rolled out in both Cairns and Tablelands-based high schools and encourages and supports creativity amongst high school students. “The ‘Emergency Entrepreneurs’ program was born for a couple of reasons,” Mr Zammit said. “We have this significant youth unemploy-

ment problem issue, where it (the rate) is currently between 20 and 22 per cent. “So by virtue of nature, it doesn’t matter how much money we pump in training – if we can’t nurture and encourage one in five kids to actually ‘create’ a job – to turn an idea into a business, then that status quo is never going to

change. “And secondly, we are always meeting people who have ideas, but don’t have the time, due to their job and lifestyle.” He added: “If we can bring these kids together with established entrepreneurs, then they can be pushing out ideas all of the time.

“To be entrepreneur, you don’t need to be the smartest kid in the room – you don’t have to be the fastest or the prettiest. “Once they have that shift, then we bring in the tools and show them how to build a business plan in 20 minutes.” Additionally, the students receive insight into components such as ideal target market, market niches and importance of customer satisfaction and location. SPACE consultants have begun to gauge interest of schools across the Tablelands taking part, with the workshops having already commenced in Cairns. Key stakeholders Joe Moro (Mareeba Chamber of Commerce president) and Christine Doan (Atherton Chamber of Commerce vice president) have thrown their support behind the vision and hope that more young people can be involved in 2016’s ‘Startup Tablelands’ weekend in Mareeba. Rosy financial picture for Mareeba Shire Council By Justin Fris MAREEBA Shire Council has continued to strengthen its post-de-amalgamation financial position, after a positive financial year. The MSC finished in the red (by a total of $10,768,910) - after initially predicting a minor deficit prior to June 30 - with the achievement warmly received in the Council chamber last Wednesday morning. MSC CEO Peter Franks praised the team ef-

fort displayed by Council staff, who had turned difficult decisions into favourable outcomes. “It was really (about) going through the entire budget and what we were spending,” he said. “We did the service level review, an organisational efficiencies exercise with all staff involved – on where we could generate efficiencies.” Mr Franks said that the MSC had effectively started with a clean slate going into the previous year and were able to start afresh financially. “It’s been very difficult, but I really want to

commend our staff,” he said. “This is because everyone has been involved. “Everybody bought into it – the staff have got this attitude that at Mareeba ‘we want it to work’ and put in the required effort. “We looked at every single dollar we can save and everybody looked at their own areas. They all came up with their significant savings.” Mr Franks said that the entire MSC community was committed to ensuring that the good work would not be undone. “We’ve got to lock in

these financial projections and not let them slip,” he said. “It can be really easy to make these decisions, but it is just as easy to slip back. We need to get these savings into concrete. “What we’ve also got to start doing is infrastructure. This Council has made some big steps (for example the Mareeba Sewerage Plant and Mareeba Airport), but we need to maintain a longterm strategic plan on our critical infrastructure.” He added: “Over $2.5 million worth of works were tendered last Wednesday.”

Casting vote in councils I have been doing a little bit of research on the use of ‘Casting Votes’ used by local government councils on the Atherton Tablelands over the last 20 years or so. In all the years that Anne Portess was Mayor of Herberton Shire, she only used her casting vote twice. In the one term that Tom Gilmore was Mayor of the first TRC, he only needed to use his right to a casting vote twice. Richmond Shire Council Mayor John Wharton has the same number of councillors as the TRC and he has not used his casting vote yet. The outright winner of this rather obscure competition, is that in only one term of office [that is four years] our Mayor, Rosa Lee Long of the TRC, has needed to use her casting vote over 20 times. How very interesting. Jane Rodwell, Ravenshoe

Heat on wind farm While hundreds of Far North Queenslanders have been desperately fighting fires ringing the Mount Emerald wind farm plateau, where were the land owners? No attempt to stop the fires on their property, no offers of backup support, no calls to the volunteer brigades who worked around the clock to save properties, and no thanks. Maybe the wind farm developers were hoping the fires would wipe out the plateau’s endangered plants and animals? Their silence has been deafening - unlike what we can expect when the plateau is turned into a massive industrial electricity generating plant full of giant wind turbines. Our Government is crazy to allow any development in such a high fire danger area. One thing is for sure - when a fire breaks out the owners shouldn’t expect help from their neighbours. Surf lifesavers go from Beach to Bush

LETTERS TO THE EDITOR The Express reserves the right to edit letters

There are “many” people in Australia, and I suspect other countries in the developed world, who go to bed at night very worried about who is going to be evicted from their favourite reality show on television. (I have to also state here that, in my view, these shows have no relationship at all with reality, but that is another issue). At the same time there are many people in the middle east, Africa and the Mediterranean States who go to bed at night very worried about their chances of living another day. Some of these “many” people make their way, by various means, both legal and illegal, to Australia as refugees. And generally, Australian people make them welcome and try to make it easy and comfortable for them to fit into our weird Australian way of life. But “many” of these refugees do not want to “fit in”. They want to change this country so that it becomes more like the country from which they have recently fled, and which has harboured groups who have perpetrated gross atrocities upon them. I am afraid my simple mind cannot understand this thinking. Perhaps that is because we, in Australia, until recently, have not had to deal with threats within our own borders, and we have become soft as a nation. Australia has a proud history that was built upon migration and there are “many” current migrants who think the current behaviour of terror groups and radicals is utterly unacceptable. Should we get tougher on all forms of crime? Should the current bail system receive an urgent overhaul? Should our immigration laws and the screening of potential migrants be tightened? Should all migrants be required to be able to speak Australian? Should migrants be obliged to swear an oath of allegiance to Australia? How long should migrants be permitted to stay on the dole? The list is long and I am afraid I don’t have the answers. Let’s hope Malcolm Turnbull does. Peter Beatts, MAREEBA

‘Many’ priorities are wrong in Aus I would like to begin this letter by defending my use of the word “many” throughout this text. I use it because I know there are “many” but I can’t give an exact number.

be applied to any type of water situation including rivers, dams, creeks, pools or waterways. SLSQ community awareness manager Helen Hallett said that people who lived more than 50 kilometres from the beach had been identified as a ‘high-risk’ group. “It’s no secret that Australians love the water, be it the beach, the backyard pool or a country dam,” she said. “With that in mind, it’s really important that every single Queenslander – regardless of where they live – is equipped with some of the basic skills, information and knowledge to protect themselves and others while in the water this summer. “The Breaka Beach to Bush program helps our surf lifesavers continue to spread important water safety messages far and wide throughout Queensland. It’s a really fun program for the kids and the lifesavers alike, delivering potentially lifesaving water safety lessons in a fun and engaging way, and giving participants some skills they’ll hopefully be able to take with them for life,” she said. Mrs Hallett said students will receive vital water safety tips by taking part in an interactive presentation with a focus on swimming between the red and yellow flags, always following safety signs and looking out for each other while enjoying the water.

North Queensland students will receive vital water safety lessons ahead of summer when some of the state’s finest surf lifesavers descend into regional towns between October 12 and 16, as part of Surf Life Saving Queensland’s (SLSQ) ‘Breaka Beach to Bush’ program. The educational program has been operating in Queensland since 1998 and remains one of the largest and most innovative community awareness initiatives in Australia, having directly reached more than 275,000 school children since its inception. Five simultaneous tours will be conducted across the state, with 15,000 students from 62 primary schools welcoming the unique sight of surf lifesavers and receiving vital surf and water safety information in the process. The North Queensland regional tour departed from Cairns on Monday, October 12, and over the next few days, surf lifesavers will pass through Yorkeys Knob, Trinity Park, Mareeba, Mutchilba, Atherton, Tolga, Innisfail, Babinda and Gordonvale. In total, the tour will see surf lifesavers travel approximately 700 kilometres and visit up to 17 different schools along the way. While primarily focusing on surf and beach safety, the skills and information taught to the children can also

What’s on at the Rising Sun Cinema A stunning and highly rated movie is new on the Rising Sun screen this week. Matt Damon stars in THE MARTIAN, a dramatic space rescue adventure. It's an entertaining, funny, emotional and often tense drama that will keep you enthralled. Meryl Streep and Kevin Kline star in the excellent and often humorous drama RICKI AND THE FLASH, whilst the action drama EVEREST has an all star line up. STRAIGHT OUTTA COMPTON is a very different musical trip and again is based on the true exploits of a select band of rap musicians who set the musical world alight. Monday October, 19, is a student free day and to coincide with this, the Rising Sun Cinema has a special family friendly deal for all shows before 5pm. See PIXELS, ODDBALL or Pan for only $5.00 per person, all ages. Times are in the advertisement – so come grab at bargain movie at Mareeba's Rising Sun Cinema.

THE MARTIAN

During a manned mission to Mars, Astronaut Mark Watney (Matt Damon) is presumed dead after a fierce storm and left behind by his crew. But Watney has survived and finds himself stranded and alone on the hostile planet. With only meager supplies, he must draw upon his ingenuity, wit and spirit to subsist and find a way to signal to Earth that he is alive. Review by Louise Keller: Humour is the unexpected bonus of this thrilling space rescue adventure that offers a bit of everything, as it keeps us on edge throughout. The story (adapted by World War Z screenwriter Drew Goddard from Andy Weir's novel) is dense, allowing us to connect not only to Matt Damon's stranded astronaut Mark Watney and feel his predicament, but to those who are pulling out all the stops to bring him home. Damon has the same kind of broad appeal as Gravity star George Clooney and here, as Watney begins recording his video logs, we feel as though he is talking directly to each of us. While documenting his dilemma, he is in effect, talking to himself, solving one impossible issue at a time. The Martian has moments that are every bit as tense as those in Gravity (2013), but there's also an appealing irreverence through the film's frequent use of humour. Ridley Scott's great achievement is to accomplish the perfect tone and keep us connected, while meshing the various plot lines. The storyline never feels fragmented, even though the characters are sometimes worlds away from each other. There is no lengthy set up: the severe windstorm hits the Mars mission site almost immediately, forcing the crew to quickly evacuate, creating circumstances that leave leaves Watney alone on Mars, believed dead. Humour and problem solving are Watney's greatest tools, using his skills, resourcefulness and determination to come up with a plan for survival. Devising an ingenious way to grow food on a planet unable to sustain life is his first challenge. Other story strands include those related to NASA and the subsequent sensitive PR nightmare. Jeff Daniels as the NASA director is as close to a villain as the film offers; Kristen Wiig as PR director; Chiwetel Ejiofor as the concerned missions director and Sean Bean as flight director. Watch for the scene in which genius 'orbital dynamicist' Rich Purnell (Donald Glover) makes a demonstration you won't

forget. The relationships all matter. Also key is the story strand involving Watney's crew, led by Jessica Chastain's Commander Lewis. There's a running gag about Watney's disdain for Commander Lewis' taste in music. In fact music plays an important role, and the juxtaposition of unexpected tunes adds to our overall enjoyment. Problems may be resolved but more pop up, each new challenge greater than the last. Are the risks calculated or could they be lunacy? With limited sols (Mars solar days) in which to devise a rescue plan, tension mounts as time starts to run out. Damon carries the film comfortably on his broad shoulders, while there's plenty of good support by the strong cast. Entertaining, funny, tense and emotionally powerful; everything you could want in a film. It's terrific.

EVEREST

A climbing expedition on Mt. Everest is devastated by a severe snow storm. Based on a true story which claimed the life of New Zealand mountaineer Rob Hall and 8 others.

STRAIGHT OUT OF COMPTON

In 1987, five young men, using brutally honest rhymes and hardcore beats, put their frustration and anger about life in the most dangerous place in America into the most powerful weapon they had: their music. Taking us back to where it all began, Straight Outta Compton tells the true story of how these cultural rebels-armed only with their lyrics, swagger, bravado and raw talent-stood up to the authorities that meant to keep them down and formed the world's most dangerous group, N.W.A. And as they spoke the truth that no one had before and exposed life in the hood, their voice ignited a social revolution that is still reverberating today.

RICKI AND THE FLASH

Ricki (Meryl Streep) is a rock-musician who gave up everything for her dream of rock-and-roll stardom with her band, The Flash. When her daughter Julie (Mamie Gummer) becomes distraught after learning her husband wants a divorce, Ricki returns to Indianapolis to be with her, her former husband (Kevin Kline) and her two sons.

This month, we mark National Carers Week (October 11-17) – an opportunity to celebrate the contribution carers make to the Far North Queensland community. In Far North Queensland around 1300 people will be diagnosed with cancer this year. Many will need the ongoing care and support of their loved ones throughout their cancer journey. While caring can be a rich source of satisfaction in people’s lives, it can also be challenging – and in those times Cancer Council is here to help. Carers can experience a lot of confusion, stress, anxiety and a range of mental health challenges when someone they are close to receives a diagnosis of cancer. Cancer Council Queensland is here to support every family mem-

ber, neighbour, friend or carer who works hard to help those touched by cancer to achieve the best possible quality of life. A quick call to Cancer Council 13 11 20 can provide access to a comprehensive range of assistance programs, information and resources – or simply a listening ear if you need it. Staffed by experienced health professionals, 13 11 20 ensures patients and carers don’t go through cancer alone. Our 13 11 20 team can recommend or refer callers to appropriate assistance, including our free Cancer Counselling Service. Telephone counselling is available statewide and face-to-face sessions are available in our Cairns and regional offices, with psychologists who specialise in cancer support. Help us celebrate carers this week by honouring a carer in your community – show that you care too. More information about Cancer Council Queensland is available via 13 11 20 or cancerqld.org.au.

The LAND Steers top 289.2c/kg in Mareeba THE EXPRESS reports agents yarded 1264 cattle at the Mareeba Saleyards on Tuesday October 6, which was up substantially from the previous sale. Pricing has somewhat quelled in recent weeks, but it still appears that it has never been better to head down to the yards and stock up on quality cattle.

Midweight steers were in solid supply, although they dropped in value. A line of 11 C4 scores realised 289.2c/kg mark, along with six C3 scores realising 269.2c/ kg ($1,235.63). 11 heavier (750kg) steers were yarded this week – and realised up to a total of 279.2c/kg – which was a major gain.

Drought affected farmers now have the opportunity to apply for relief assistance over the coming year.

Support for those impacted by drought GRAZIERS and pastoralists impacted by drought now have an opportunity to seek assistance from both Federal and State Governments. 2015/2016 applications for either drought concessional loans or a drought recovery concessional loan can now be applied for. Federal Minister for Agriculture and Water Resources, Barnaby Joyce, acknowledged that many graziers in Queensland are doing it tough. “Queensland farmers are doing it very tough, with up to 80 per cent of the state now recognised as being in drought by the State Government,” Minister Joyce said. “This government has listened to those farmers and we are delivering practical support to both help farmers through the drought and recover from its effects as conditions improve. Through the Agricultural Competitiveness White Paper, we are delivering on our commitment to continue concessional loans schemes by making up to $30 million available for Drought Concessional Loans and up to $15 million for Drought Recovery Concessional Loans to Queensland farmers this year.” He added: “With concessional interest rates currently at 3.05 per cent for Drought Concessional Loans and 2.71 per cent for Drought Recovery Concessional Loans, these loan facilities represent the cheapest finance available to drought-affected farmers. “Drought Concessional Loans are available for an

interest-only term of five years, while Drought Recovery Concessional Loans are available for 10 years with interest-only Palaszczuk Government Minister for Agriculture and Fisheries, Bill Byrne, said funding through the drought concessional loans schemes delivered welcome assistance to the state’s farmers at a critical time. “Over the past 10 months, since taking on this portfolio, I have travelled to many regional communities and unsurprisingly I am seeing the devastation this ongoing drought is having on our farmers right across the state,” Minister Byrne said. “These loans will assist those farm businesses financially impacted by the drought with debt restructuring, operating expenses or drought recovery activities. “Drought concessional loans schemes complement the Queensland government’s $52.1 million drought package announced earlier this year.” Minister Joyce concluded that 163 graziers across the state had already benefited from earlier assistance this year. “I strongly encourage any farmer thinking about applying for a concessional loan or any other assistance measure not to self-assess their eligibility and to talk to the experts at QRAA, the Department of Human Services or their local Rural Financial Counselling Service to find out more about their options,” he said.

A new partnership between the Palaszczuk Government and Sugar Research Australia (SRA) will focus on the study of nitrogen use on sugar cane properties. Palaszczuk Government Environment Minister Dr Steven Miles said the partnership funding of $2.4 million over a three year period would go be allocated toward five cane property projects. “The projects aim to enhance nitrogen use efficiency on cane farms, improving management practices and protecting the Great Barrier Reef,” Dr Miles said. “We want to help farmers ensure that as much fertiliser as possible is taken up by the plant, saving them money and reducing runoff to the reef. “This government is encouraging the uptake of better practices to get us to where we need to be by 2025 in terms of reducing our impacts on the Great Barrier Reef. “By helping identify improved farming practices through the latest science, this investment over the next three years will help us progress our reef water quality tar-

1 cup melted marshmallow 1 teaspoon vanilla 1 cup semi-sweet chocolate chips 3 tablespoons red food coloring

1. Spray a 9-inch square pan lightly with cooking spray, then line it with a double thickness of foil with ends of foil extending over sides. Spray lightly again and wipe out any excess spray with a paper towel. 2. Place butter in a large microwave-safe bowl. Cover with a paper towel to prevent spattering. Cook on high for 1½ minutes or until butter is melted. 3. Add sugar, milk and cream; mix well. Microwave on high power for 3 minutes, stir and cook another 2 minutes. Stir well. If butter seems to separate out of the mixture, don’t worry, just keep stirring till it mixes back in. Scrape down sides of bowl and return to microwave. Microwave 3 more minutes, stir again, then finish with another 2½ minutes in the microwave. 4. Remove from microwave, add marshmallow and stir. Add white chocolate chips and vanilla. Stir until very smooth all ingredients are well incorporated. 5. Place semi-sweet chocolate chips and food coloring in a second microwave-safe bowl. Immediately, transfer about ½ of the hot white chocolate mixture to this second bowl. Stir well with a strong handled spatula or wooden spoon until chocolate chips are completely melted and incorporated. 6. Working quickly, with two clean medium-size ice cream scoops or 2 tablespoons, plop scoops of each mixture in a random pattern into a prepared pan. 7. When complete, lift up pan and drop from about 1-inch above work surface. Repeat several times to remove any air bubbles. Jiggle pan to smooth surface then take a small knife, coated with a bit of butter and run the blade back and forth through the fudge to create the swirly effect. 8. Cool completely. Use foil handles to lift fudge from pan before cutting into squares.

Nestled between the channel and the creek there is a three bedroom home. It is fully done up with the best of care plus there is an immaculately looked after shed and there are some workers quarters to go with it. To the left there is a large paddock of aged tea trees that could be turned into great mulch and that means income. On the other side you will find a mango orchard that with a bit of clean up could bring you some returns as well. You Might also be able to mine some amount of sand deposited along the creek. There are also couple of large already cleared paddocks if you were looking to cultivate something else or have areas for grazing. Perfectly round and fully fenced dam, great place for chickens and ducks. All this close to main road but you wouldn't know that and only minutes from Dimbulah. Rain fails to dampen Dimbulah’s spirit

By Justin Fris

RAIN was a surprising element of last Saturday’s Dimbulah Horse and Pony Club ‘Trophy Weekend’, but it did little to erode the warmth and friendly hospitality. Over the weekend, 12 horse sport events were eagerly contested, with an emphasis on two key things – horsemanship and sportsmanship. Dimbulah Horse and Pony Club president Jason Carey was also on hand to formally open a new playground for the club, which had been donated from in part from students (Aaron Emmerson and Darcy Rollings represented the school on the day) at Dimbulah State School. Mr Carey said: “The Dimbulah Horse and Pony Club constructed this playground for the little kids, so the parents can have peace of mind. “And the children can be left in the playground and

enjoy their time safely, so no horses can be kicking near them.” He added: “Earlier in the year, the students of Dimbulah State School raised some money through the ‘Great Wheelbarrow Race’ – and with that money (DHPC received $1200), they divided it up and gave it to a number of local organisations within the community.” Mr Carey was really proud of all participants who took part in the weekend, praising their attitude and commitment to their craft. Additionally, on behalf of the DHPC, Mr Carey also expressed his gratitude to the support of local Mareeba Shire councillor ‘Nipper’ Brown, the MSC and all local sponsors who assisted with the event. The club is always looking for new members, so if you would like to join this inclusive club, please contact Mr Carey on 0428 721 540.

EXPRESS sPORT Thousands flock to PBR event in Atherton

Comets ace Fabio Nocilla looks to shoot during last Thursday night’s match.

Comets prevail in lacklustre contest By Justin Fris Saturday night’s opening ceremony was electric. Cody Heffernan.

AROUND 2000 people flocked to the Atherton Showgrounds (Roosters Stadium) for Round 5 of the PBR (Pro Bull Riding) Australia league. Tablelands residents of all ages enjoyed a fiercely contested evening of competition, with Cody Hef-

fernan (pictured left) awarded champion with 165 points. Heffernan was delighted with his victory, joining the big crowd in celebration of a wonderful sporting spectacle on the Tablelands.

MAREEBA’s chances of achieving bonus points in their two-day fixture in Tully evaporated, after last Sunday’s play was washed out. Bandits squad members were in Atherton around 7.30am when they were advised of the decision – but Bandits skipper Brendan Payne was philosophical about the situation. “There’s not a great deal that you can do about the weather,” he said. “It is what it is though. I think we really got ourselves back in a good position (Mareeba had

Tully at 1/8 off seven overs, after making 140) and had taken momentum from them. “But it’s still very early in the season, so we have plenty of games ahead that can make up for it.” The Bandits will travel to the south coast for two of the next three weekends, with an upcoming one day schedule of Innisfail (away), Tully (home) and Mission Beach (away). Payne added that the week would be spent primarily in the nets and his squad would be aiming to continue their positive start to the season. Sunday’s match starts at 1pm in Innisfail.

IT appears that a two week break has done a world of good for the Comets, who returned to winning ways last Thursday evening in the Mareeba Basketball League. After their previous performance ended in a 96-24 annihilation, the Comets held off Express 55-53 and restarted their finals ambitions. The match began in unordinary circumstances, starting 32 minutes after its scheduled tip off time of 7pm. Both sides squandered much of the opening quarter, where they were routinely presented with gettable shots and failed to make them. Coupled with this, errors piled higher than a double decker sandwich. Instead of conservatively passing down the court, both sets of players opted for high-risk long passes, which more often than not ended in turnovers. Express managed to put some of the first quarter horror show behind them and began to generate positive scoring pressure on their opponents. They would shoot 7/15 from the field (2 point shots) during the quarter and head into half time with a 27-21 advantage. Daniel Vecchio-Ruggeri impressed onlookers with his off-the-ball ability, with several blocked shots and steals heading his way. Comets youngster Ely Simmons began to hit his straps as the match wore on, with his long-range shooting lifting his teammates. The overall skill level would again dip

by both sides during this quarter. Close on the scoreboard, it was – classic, it was not. Final quarter heroics were required for a winner to be decided in this one, with the action of the game all coinciding with the final five minutes of the ball game. In a fantastic spell of offensive play, Simmons would sink five points (one field goal and one three) in nine seconds, roughly five minutes out from full time. At the time, many may have thought this sequence of play may have proved inconsequential, but essentially it won the Comets the game. Each team would foul out (five team fouls) in the final two minutes of play, although Express were unable to bridge the deficit. In other matches, the MBA Deadleys continue to put pressure on Hot Air for supremacy, clinically outplaying the Barras, 70-16. The Red Devils had a tough outing against the Stingrays in the late fixture, before doing enough for a 63-55 win. Currently, the league table top four stands as follows: Deadleys 22, Red Devils 21, Hot Air 19 and the Comets are also on 19. Outside the four, the Stingrays are on 17, Express 12 and the Barras remained in the basement on 8 points. In the Ladies A-Grade competition, the Gummaz are hot on the heels of the Baiada Steggles in 2nd place, after destroying the Deadley Mums 60-18 last week. Matches are held each Thursday evening at the Mareeba PCYC Sports Hall on Walsh Street.

CORRECTION – In the last edition, The Express reported that talented local footballer Nicholas Panetta had been named captain for the Australian U/17 World Cup. Although he had been named captain during some qualifying matches, it did not necessarily include the upcoming tournament. The Express acknowledges this oversight and wishes Nicholas and the team all the best in Chile.

MUFC celebrates historic season in style By Justin Fris

THE Mareeba United Football Club capped off a memorable 2015 season, with a memorable presentation evening last Saturday evening at Borzi Park. It was a season in which silverware and victory weren’t only dreams – they became sustained habits and realities. After winning the 2015 FNQ Premier League’s ‘Most Valuable Player’ award only a fortnight ago, humble champion Wayne Srhoj received the ‘Male Player of the Year’ award, while Samantha Cater received ‘Ladies Player of the Year’ for her stellar season upfront. The MUFC brethren appear to be in good hands with upcoming talent as well, with elite youngster Zane Singleton looking as one to watch for future seasons in the Premier Men’s. Along with being awarded ‘Junior Player of the Year’, Singleton was recognised with both the ‘Best and Fairest’ and ‘Players’ Player’ awards. Premier Mens Lenard Brischetto picked up a double

on the night being awarded ‘Best and Fairest’ and was left speechless when awarded ‘Players’ Player. Goal scoring droughts did not impact on Anthony Mete during the season, with the striker placing himself in unique company. Not only did Mete have a fantastic season for the Premier Men’s and lead their goalscoring – but in only five Premier Reserve matches, he scored 10 goals and topped their goalscoring chart, alongside new club favourite, Leonardo Cisterni. The Premier Reserve squad had a solid season under Marcello Savaglio, with Nicholas Tallerico winning the ‘Best and Fairest’ and Ben Stabile ‘Players’ Player’. Angelo Tatti was adjudged ‘Best and Fairest’, in the Second Division team which finished in the top four in 2015. Promising winger James Elmes was awarded the male ‘MUFC Rising Star’ award, while his female counterpart Celeste Petersen received the female ‘MUFC Rising Star’. Club officials and supporters let their hair down after the festivities, which carried long into the night.
