Mareeba local Gia Smith’s health status has been described as “positive” by her mother Regan. Gia has recently returned to Mareeba and will have monthly check-ups in Brisbane.

NOT too many people have showed greater resolve in the face of adversity than that of Mareeba local Gia Smith, who has battled admirably since being diagnosed with T-cell Acute Lymphoblastic Leukaemia last year. After numerous months spent in Brisbane receiving some of the best cancer treatment in the country, Gia has returned home to Mareeba – much to the delight of many within the community. Gia’s mother Regan Smith said Gia’s health status is positive. “She has done really well in conquering the most intensive chemotherapy in her protocol and is currently in a phase called ‘Maintenance’,” Mrs Smith said. “This phase is less intense chemo although she requires chemo every day and this will be finished on March 1, 2021. “We will be having the biggest celebration that day and I guess we will go from there.” Mrs Smith said she and Gia will travel to Brisbane once a month, with that frequency expected to lessen to three monthly visits by mid next year. “On August 1 we return to Brisbane to receive one of her catch up doses of chemo that was out of stock world-wide along with a Lumbar puncher (chemo in spinal and brain fluid),” she said. “Then we return home for a few weeks until the following month and hopefully another chemo shipment arrives.” Mrs Smith said it has been very exciting to be based back home in Mareeba and living together as a family again. “We have a totally new normal, but it works and our family and friends have been instrumental in making Gia’s life as normal as possible, there is just a lot more antibacterial hand sanitizers involved these days,” she said. “Also, when her brother Oscar comes to appointments with us he always thanks the doctors and nurses for fixing his Gia

which is so heart-warming for us.” Mrs Smith said Gia’s strength, power, determination and comprehension of this situation has been mind-blowing. “She has pushed through some really difficult days and has even asked us if we were okay,” she said. “She is seriously our superhero. “Gia understands why she needs to have her medication and she always thanks her nurses after her treatments and just adores her consultant Dr Chris Fraser who is the Director of Oncology at the Queensland Children’s Hospital.” Mrs Smith took time to thank those who have helped throughout Gia’s exhausting ordeal. “Since Gia’s diagnosis there has been so many amazing people, some we know and some we have never met who have been such a source of strength and support,” she said. “We are so incredibly grateful now more than ever of our town and the people in it. “We would like to thank our community as a whole, our family and friends, the Indie Rose foundation, the Generosity for Gia team and the amazing work of Gia’s local GP Dr Akil Islam. “Karl, Oscar and I are really forever grateful.” Gia met the Cairns medical team last week and will see them for regular check-ups in between Brisbane trips. For those interested in helping Gia and her family in their fight, you can do so by giving blood. “On August 29 and 31 we will be hosting another blood donation Yellow Party in Cairns which will not only help our Gia but plenty of other local families in need,” Mrs Smith said. Please contact the Generosity for Gia Facebook page for more information. It is safe to say that Gia’s show of strength has touched the hearts of the entire Mareeba community, and that is evident with the enormous support that has been given by residents throughout the region.

Renewed calls for Ag Visa PRESSURE from agricultural and horticultural industry groups is being applied on the National Party of Australia to stick to its pre-election promise of revisiting the Ag Visa Scheme. Industry lobby groups and a large population of farmers across the country believe a specific ag visa will be beneficial to smaller growers as it will provide greater flexibility and will allow them to send workers where they are required when the work is available. As it relates to the migrant workforce, an ag visa will ensure the upfront cost of healthcare, airfares and accommodation that an employer is required to provide under the current scheme will become the regulators’ responsibility. In addition, employers will be accredited under the Ag Visa Scheme. Despite assurances from Na-

Mr Morrison noted that previous reforms regarding the backpacker visas, the Seasonal Worker Program and the Pacific Labour Scheme could address a lack of workers experienced in rural and regional areas. FNQ Growers President and Biboohra mango farmer Joe Moro said an ag visa is something that is nationally supported by the National Farmers’ Federation (NFF) and the horticultural industry across Australia. “This is something we have been advocating on behalf of for the past two years and we are adamant that we want to see an

Growers invited to value chain study tour

GROWERS keen to explore opportunities in advanced manufacturing and value adding are invited to take part in a study tour this Thursday, July 25. Funded under the State Government’s Training in Emerging and Innovative Industries Fund (TEII), the day-long tour will take growers and industry stakeholders to leading value-added and advanced manufacturing businesses in the region. The fully sponsored day will start at the Malanda Dairy Centre, before moving to Coffee Works, Mareeba, for a tour and morning tea. From there, the tour will visit Jonsson Farm Market and the Barrier Reef Brewery, in Cairns. The afternoon session will include a visit to the FNQ Food Incubator for a tour of their product development services and lunch, before travel back to Malanda. Leanne Kruss, Queensland Agriculture Workforce Network Manager (FNQ), who is delivering the TEII project on behalf of FNQ Growers, said the tour was open to all growers, and follows strong interest in growing and developing a turmeric and ginger industry on the Tableland. “This tour is designed to facilitate skills development for production and processing,” Ms Kruss said. “This will allow producers to assess the capacity of supply chain to service demand, and investigate opportunities for value-added production including end user customer relationships in the health and wellness market's rapidly growing global demands.” Ms Kruss said growers and stakeholders would gain a solid understanding of what it takes to create value add products, with strong sales velocity and advanced manufacturing technologies in the digital age. To book a seat or for more information, contact Ms Kruss at leannefnqagriculture@gmail. com or on 0431 743 633. Alternatively, register at www.growcom.com.au/events

SURVIVOR: Wendy Paronella of Atherton has been named as the 2019 Face of the Tablelands Relay for Life. The 2019 Tablelands Relay For Life will be held on October 19 at the Atherton Showgrounds.

Face of Tablelands Relay For Life announced TABLELANDS local Wendy Paronella was a young, happy and newly engaged 18-yearold when she received news that changed her life – she was diagnosed with ovarian cancer. Fast forward 40 years and Mrs Paronella is now cancer free and a proud mother of three and grandmother of nine, despite having one ovary completely removed and the other partially removed after her diagnoses. Mrs Paronella has been named Face of the 2019 Tablelands Relay For Life, to be held on October 19 at Atherton Showgrounds, in honour of

her cancer experience, resilience and dedication to raising awareness. The Face of Relay is a symbol of hope for locals affected by cancer and hope for a cancer free future. Mrs Paronella encouraged others to get to know their body and get in touch with their GP if they notice any changes. “I encourage others to take notice of any abnormal physical features and to just be more aware of how you are feeling,” she said. Mrs Paronella encouraged locals to get involved in this year's Relay For Life to help

raise vital funds for Cancer Council Queensland’s research, support and prevention services. “Fundraising is essential in ensuring we support people going through their cancer journeys,” she said. As Face of Relay, Wendy will lead other survivors and their carers on a lap to officially open Tablelands Relay For Life. Cancer Council Queensland CEO Chris McMillian thanked Mrs Paronella and the Tablelands community for supporting this year's Relay For Life. “Wendy is passionate about

raising awareness and reaching out to support locals who are affected by cancer – that is what Relay For Life is all about,” Ms McMillan said. “By joining Wendy at Tablelands Relay For Life, you will give hope to all locals affected by cancer and help us get one step closer to a cancer free future. “Relay is an event for anyone, no matter their age or ability, who is inspired to fight back against cancer and make a difference in their local community. “Together, we are stronger than cancer – register for Ta-

Operating theatre upgrade starts tal during the operating theatre closure. “The Mareeba Hospital will only be able to respond to obstetric emergencies such as emergency caesarean sections during this time,” said Ms Grigg. Pregnant mothers are urged to discuss their options with their Mareeba Hospital midwives. “I understand that the temporary closure of surgical services during the refurbishment period may inconvenience the Mareeba community, staff and patients,” said Ms Grigg. “I expect that there will be construction noise and disruption during the refurbishment.

However, this upgrade is part of planning for the future and ensuring that we have services for our population. “The new endoscopy service also aligns with the Health Service strategy to increase the selfsufficiency of Mareeba Hospital and deliver care closer to home where safe to do so”, said Kerry. Cairns and Hinterland Health Service Chief Executive Clare Douglas said that the new endoscopy service aligns with the Health Service strategy to increase the self-sufficiency of major rural sites, such as Mareeba Hospital.

HOSPITAL UPGRADE: Mareeba Hospital staff Dr Nikki Patching (Medical Superintendent) Director of Nursing and Midwifery/Facility Manager Kerry Grigg and Michelle Bombardieri (Midwifery and Nurse Unit Manager).

MAREEBA Hospital has started the upgrade of their operating theatre and will reopen with a new endoscopy service for residents. During the 12-week upgrade, the Mareeba operating theatre will only be available for obstetric (maternity) emergency surgery. Dr Nikki Patching, Mareeba Hospital Medical Superintendent said the new endoscopy service will allow the hospital to investigate patients with symp-

toms and diagnose for gastrointestinal tract diseases such as cancers and abnormalities of the digestive tract. “By providing endoscopic services locally we will be able to treat more patients within clinically recommended timeframes and meet increasing future demand for endoscopic services,” said Dr Patching. “An endoscopy/colonoscopy allows doctors to see the lining of a patient’s oesophagus, stomach, or colon. If abnormal areas

are seen, biopsies (tissue samples) can be taken for testing,” Dr Patching explained. Mareeba Acting Director of Nursing and Midwifery/Facility Manager, Ms Kerry Grigg, said that 30 per cent of referrals for endoscopies to Atherton Hospital were for patients who lived closer to Mareeba Hospital. “This new service means we can provide safe and sustainable care closer to home for Mareeba residents,” said Ms Grigg. “We anticipate that the operating the-

atre will be closed for about 12 weeks until the end of October 2019.” “Arrangements have been made for general and dental surgery to be referred to Atherton Hospital, with the Cairns Hospital providing additional support to maternity patients when required. “Midwifery staff have been meeting with pregnant mothers to discuss birthing options and assessing their suitability for birthing at the Mareeba Hospi-

FUNERAL Q&A QUESTION: When I go to funerals I feel inadequate when asked if anyone would like to say something. I want to speak but feel unsure.

ANSWER: It has become increasingly common at

funerals for the Celebrant or Clergy to ask if anyone would like to offer a few words or memories regarding the deceased person. Of course there is no requirement on anyone to do so, but it is often the most emotional and touching part of the service. Words spoken from the heart without too much preparation bring so much meaning to a service. You do not need to “make a speech”, a few words of a bond shared, a cherished memory or a funny story is all that is needed. These few words will mean so much. A team member at Community Funerals will be very happy to help you prepare some words if you ask - no fee its all part of our service. If you have a question for this Q&A please email to info@ communityfunerals.com.au

ATHERTON is now home to the number one IGA store in Australia after the Fresh St. Market IGA took home the National Fresh Produce Department of the Year, National GM and Grocery Department of the Year, SUPA IGA Store of the Year and and IGA National Retailer of the Year awards at the annual IGA National Retailer of the Year Awards held on the Gold Coast last week. The national awards were judged on a range of criteria including customer service, community pride, department excellence, brand values, sales, profits, merchandising and the store’s overall performance. Formerly known as Atherton Supa IGA, the Fresh St. Market IGA decided to undergo a rebrand and partial refurbishment to emphasise its focus on fresh foods. This included the addition of a large bulk foods section, new fruit and vegetable bins, an array

of open display cheese barges and interactive facets that enable customers to grind coffee, squeeze orange juice and make nut butters. Their win last week was further reassurance that their decision to rebrand and refurbish worked wonders – and owner and operator Michael Shakes said it is humbling to have won. “We’re very lucky in that this is the second time we have won the overall Retailer of the Year Award, having done so previously in 2010,” he said. “We’re only the second store to have done that in the last 20 years, so it is a great achievement.” Mr Shakes pointed to multiple reasons as to why the Fresh St. Market stood out from its fellow competition. “We see the strength in the customer’s journey,” he said. “Right from when they walk through the door to the point of sale we do everything to ensure

they are having a happy and worthwhile experience. “Our value proposition for customers is another thing I feel allows us to stand out - we are the cheapest independent supermarket in the state and I believe customers appreciate our value driven approach.” Mr Shakes noted that he doesn’t feel the Fresh St. Market would’ve won had they not undergone refurbishments last year. “Given we had been in this current site for ten years, we wouldn’t have won,” he said. “And that rebrand and refurbishment has added to our reputation of being somewhat outside the norm compared to traditional supermarkets.” Mr Shakes said he would like to thank his team for their efforts and in particular the community for their unwavering support.

Explore block chain technology opportunities in horticulture POTENTIAL exporters of fresh and packaged horticulture products will learn how to use block chain technology to tap into emerging digital supply chains at a workshop in Mareeba this Friday, July 26. Funded under the Training in Emerging and Innovative Industries Fund (TEII), the FNQ Growers half-day training session will take participants through the current system requirements and show them how new technology, such as block chain, can help growers target future export markets, from anywhere in the world. Block chain technology is a decentralised record-keeping system and has the potential to streamline food production and delivery. Leanne Kruss, Queensland Agriculture Workforce Network Manager (FNQ), who is deliver-

ing the TEII project on behalf of FNQ Growers, said the workshop would focus on emerging technology that gives control back to exporters and importers, reducing risk and frustration for international traders, and streamlining global trade. “Providing a digital platform for trade finance within a secure trading environment will help the agricultural industry cut costs, and increase security through transparency by utilising block chain technology,” Ms Kruss said. “The workshop will deliver information on customer focused trade finance platforms, totally different to the block chain many have heard about surrounding crypto currency. “This way forward provides a secure environment to negotiate trade deals, share documentation and agree on payment

terms.” Ms Kruss said Far North Queensland horticulture growers were well placed to take advantage of the growing interest in block chain technology. “We are home to an abundance supply of fresh and packaged products, traditional and niche, and combined that with our advanced manufacturing techniques in the region, our growers have a unique opportunity to supply niche export markets using the latest technology.” An export package will be developed and tested as part of the workshop. Register online at www. growcom.com.au/events, or for further information contact Leanne Kruss, TEII Project Officer on 0431 743 633.

The Lotus Glen Correctional Facility welcomed new officers last week as the Mareeba International Club played host to the Custodial Entry Program graduation ceremony.

Lotus Glen welcomes new officers

LOTUS Glen Correctional Facility has received an influx of new officers after the Custodial Officer Entry Program graduation ceremony last Thursday at the Mareeba International Club. The officers proudly accepted their responsibility to keep the community safe through the humane containment and rehabilitation of prisoners at the Lotus Glen Correctional Centre. Commissioner Peter Martin

APM was pleased to be on hand to welcome the new custodial correctional officers. “The safety of the community is very important to me and I thank all officers, including the graduates, for their commitment to joining and serving a top-tier public safety agency and boosting the safety and security of the centre and the North Queensland community.” Commissioner Martin said.

“The graduating officers completed the rigorous Custodial Officer Entry Program which focuses on best-practice approaches, including correctional centre practices, behaviour management and places great emphasis on safety including situational awareness and communication, and de-escalation techniques. “These officers will be meeting the high standards we ex-

pect of all our officers within Queensland Corrective Services as they continue to develop their skills.” Member for Cook, Cynthia Lui said Queensland Corrective Services played a vital role in keeping the public safe. “With the comprehensive training the new graduates have received through the Queensland Corrective Services, I am very optimistic about their abil-

ity to meet whatever challenges lie ahead,” Ms Cook said. “Not only is community safety boosted, but it’s also about delivering jobs in the local community in the Far North.” “I am proud as the Member for Cook to welcome the 14 new custodial correctional officers and I wish them well in what is likely to be a rewarding and challenging career keeping their communities safe.”

Graduating officers Leah Moser and Alex Holland were ecstatic about graduating. “It was really good, knowledgeable, great trainers and a great team,” Alex said. “It’s been a great experience, if you’ve got the right mind frame I’d recommend it, 100%” Leah said. “We’d like to thank our wonderful trainers Scott Broadly and Cam Salerno.”

THE residents of Mareeba and surrounding district would have once again read today in the “The Express” that the Mareeba Shire Council has signed off on the ownership of the Mareeba Bowls Club and that the $1.08 million dollar State Government grant they received for the upgrade of the Bowls Club – including a new clubhouse for the Bowls Club – will be known as the “HUB” and will incorporate the relocation of the Mareeba Public Library from its present location in Byrnes Street – our CBD. I am not sure if the residents of Mareeba are aware that currently there are some 25 vacant shops and offices in our CBD and the Mareeba Shire Council will add to this

number when the Mareeba Public Library is relocated 3 kilometres to the East on Anzac Avenue and the present site in Byrnes Street is left vacant – to add to this number of vacant buildings in our main CBD, our Local Member of Parliament Ms Cynthia Lui has once again confirmed in “The Express” today that she will vacating her office in the Mareeba Post Office Centre in the very near future and relocating to Cairns to be more central to her electorate of Cook? This will bring the number of vacant shops/offices in our CBD to 27. I am well aware Mareeba is developing in all aspects but we are still a large rural town of some 10,000 residents in the immediate town boundary and some 20,000 in the Mareeba Shire boundary and our Central Business District will be core to daily business for our residents for many years to come. To deplete our Central

Business District of the core services to our community must be questioned and should be questioned by the general public of our Mareeba Shire Council particularly when no real face to face consultation has occurred on the relocation of our Mareeba Public Library. I cannot believe that our Mareeba Chamber of Commerce have been silent throughout this whole debate and are not questioning the removal of our Mareeba Public Library from the CBD – the chamber needs to be encouraging businesses into our CBD. Is Mareeba CBD open for business or do we all really don't care? The CBD must be the focal point of Mareeba and this message must be relayed loud and clear to our community leaders. Herberton Post Office takes out retail service award HERBERTON Post Office has been recognised as one of this year’s Australia Post Licensee Award recipients for its excellence in customer service. Taking fifth place for Queensland, the Herberton Post Office received the award for

excellence in customer service and Post Office operations, as well as its contribution to its local community. Australia Post State General Manager Anita Britcher said the Herberton Post Office is a deserving winner.

“These awards acknowledge the hard work our licensed partners commit to communities and Australia Post. It’s only fitting that we recognise and celebrate the wonderful service the Herberton Post Office provides its customers,” Ms Britcher said.

Christmas in July cruises into Mareeba

Mareeba Shire Mayor Tom Gilmore with local nomads and event organisers Des and Maureen Lane welcome everyone to come and enjoy the Christmas in July celebrations. THE 22nd annual Christmas in July celebrations are set to explode onto Davies Park, Mareeba this Thursday until Sunday July 28. The popular event, hosted by the Far North Nomads chapter, welcomes all those who travel away from winter’s cold bite in the south. Hundreds of motorhomes and grey nomads from across Australia make the pilgrimage to Mareeba each year. There will be live entertainment, raffles, novelty events, markets and a special Christmas dinner

held under the night sky. First time event organisers Maureen and Des Lane hope to see lots of locals through the gate. “We’re expecting upwards of 240 motorhomes to come in from all over Australia,” she said. “We want to keep it in Mareeba for what it brings for Mareeba. “People from all around Australia tell us how they look forward to Christmas in July.” “It’ll be a fun day,” Maureen

said. Funds raised from Christmas in July will go to the Mayors Christmas Appeal and to supporting local organisations. An open day for the public will be held on Sunday July 28 from 9am to 3pm where a gold coin donation taken at the gate will go to supporting local charities. There will be market stalls, food stalls and motorhome displays available. For more information contact Maureen Lane on 0419 029 369.

Fossett inducted into Hall of Fame

Mareeba Rodeo President Peter Brown with Pat Fossett and Graham Fossett at the Mareeba Rodeo. PHOTO: PETER ROY PHOTOGRAPHER.

THE 2019 Mareeba Rodeo saw just its second Hall of Fame inductee as Bill Fossett was recognised for his commitment and extensive involvement with the Mareeba Rodeo Association that spanned decades. Bill passed away last year – therefore his Hall of Fame induction was accepted on his behalf by his son Graham who travelled from New South Wales for the event. Bill was one of the Mareeba Rodeo’s most influential figures, and Mareeba Rodeo Association President Peter Brown spoke about the enormous impact Bill had in his more than four decades with the association.

“Bill was an extremely active member who dedicated so much time to the roles of Secretary and President of the Mareeba Rodeo Association,” he said. “I don’t think too many people realise the amount of work that goes into organising a Mareeba Rodeo – and Bill was someone who devoted every day to ensure it has become the success that it is today. “In addition, not only did Bill hold a presidency position with the Mareeba Rodeo Association, he also held one within the Australian Bushmen’s Campdraft and Rodeo Association (ABCRA) which is something definitely worth noting.”

www.theexpressnewspaper.com.au

Mr Brown said Bill was a no-nonsense type of person who garnered the respect of everyone who had the pleasure of knowing him. “He was quite an old-fashioned, straight down the line sort of character who was wellrespected,” he said. “When Bill spoke everybody listened – and I think that approach was needed for such a tiring and demanding role that organising a Mareeba Rodeo is.” Bill’s induction into the Mareeba Rodeo Association’s Hall of Fame follows that of Jim Blakeney.

HTM Complete is a specialist agricultural technology company that undertakes complex cutting-edge irrigation management projects. Working in the farming industry it quickly became apparent that irrigated agriculture was more than measuring soil moisture levels but also encompassed whole crop organization including fertilizer management and pest and disease control. Agricultural producers need to not underestimate the value of correctly scheduled irrigation as HTM Complete has many examples of yield increases exceeding 100%. In response to feedback from our clients we saw the need for integrated software that combines not just irrigation water management but other farm management activities such as pest and disease monitoring, spray control strategies and job and personnel management. Based on advice from local

farmers we developed over the last three years a multi-tool program that has evolved to be called Farm in ONE that is easy to operate, intuitive and has been trialed successfully by several of our customers. Our program, Farm in ONE offers a complete visual display of the farm showing all blocks and devices through the integrated mapping platform which allows the user to manage multiple farms in different locations.

Many farmers are using numerous control systems and software applications to manage precision agricultural production. Farm in ONE replaces all of these and can also be used with existing equipment, thus saving the farmer extra expense in having to change all equipment over to meet the software they are currently using. Another unique feature of Farm in ONE is its facility to be used

online and offline. It can be used on any internal Wi-Fi network, it is completely functional without the internet and will upload all content when the device is online again. If you are interested in a demonstration and a 14 day free trial please contact info@htmcomplete.com.au and check out our website at https://farminone. com.au/.

The team at HTM Complete recently attended the Hort Connections Conference in Melbourne to showcase their new Farm Management program, Farm in ONE. Feedback from other exhibitors and attendees was the software is very competitive with other Farm Management web interface currently available both domestically and internationally and the fact that it can integrate with any brand of monitoring device and its associated program being a

HTM Complete staff have also worked on a project collaborating with Manski Education to develop iFarm. The project was developed from a desire to promote agriculture within schools and to encourage careers in the agricultural industry. iFarm is an agricultural training module for schools that computerises a mini farm model demonstrating water management, solar energy, recycling, soil quality and the use of natural fertiliser. It teaches students future farming concepts, efficiency and management using technology

winning advantage. Another unique feature is General Tasks which encompasses OH&S as well as task and staff management including managing all contractors and providing alerts for workplace health and safety issues. HTM Complete were also very proud to win the Tablelands Business Excellence Award for Regional Innovators in June as a local business and we wish to thank all our loyal customers for their support over the last few years.

that is used in current farming practices. iFarm is a program designed for educational purposes providing students with knowledge, fun, a user-friendly platform, career building, team building skills and use as an educational tool building knowledge in science, coding and robotics, agronomy, food technology and engineering. HTM Complete and Manski hope to see iFarm in every school in Australia to educate students about the importance of technology in today’s agricultural industries and to promote agricultural awareness.

Saving money in a family law property settlement

Local singer makes debut Cliff Wiseman of Herberton has released his debut album titled “Well How Then?”

When it comes to family law, people are generally aware of the benefits of formalising parenting arrangements and ensuring child support arrangements are in place, however, little seems to be known of the financial benefits of family law property settlements. Let me tell you, there are many. Formalising your family law property settlement whether through court orders (preferably reached by consent) or a financial agreement, can have major financial and other benefits for you and your family. Today we will focus on two of them. 1. Properly documented property settlements attract stamp duty exemptions on the transfer of dutiable property. For example, if the husband/de facto partner owns real property worth $700,000 the stamp duty payable on the transfer of the property to the wife/ other de facto partner is $17,350. However, were that transfer to occur pursuant to a family law court order or financial agreement duty is not payable, saving the parties $17,350. Beware, a statutory declaration or other written agreement recording the property settlement will not attract the exemption. 2. Automatic capital gains tax rollover relief may also be attracted by the transfer of assets in a properly documented family law settlement. This relief means that no capital gains tax is payable by the transferor on the transfer of capital gains tax property, such as an investment property, to his or her former partner in a family law settlement. Further, the transferee spouse will only make the capital gain (or loss) when they subsequently dispose of the investment property, which could be many years later. Again, this can be a huge financial relief for separating couples already grappling with the financial fallout of separation or divorce. It is also important to be aware of the time limits for commencing Family Law Court proceedings or formalising property settlements through consent orders, being 2 years from separation for de facto couples and 12 months from a final divorce order for married couples. For legal advice about your family law property settlement or any other family law issues, contact our expert family lawyers in Cairns and Mareeba on 4036 9700 or 4036 9780.

TO celebrate NAIDOC Week Aboriginal elder and RAAF Veteran Cliff Wiseman released his debut album titled “Well How Then?” an album consisting of 15 songs produced locally in Herberton. Cliff has spent time during his retirement to compose guitar riffs and country music melodies for the new album. His efforts have won him an Encouragement Award at the Far North Queensland Country Festival in 2018 along with a certificate for song writing at the Yungaburra Music Festival. “He was so excited when he got the certificate,” said his caretaker; Karen Ann. He performs at folk festi-

vals and local open mic nights spreading his love for country music. “I wanted to make songs that anyone around the world could sing,” he said. “If an eskimo wanted to pick up a guitar and sing a love song to his wife he could use one of mine. “I’ve taken inspiration from a lot of American country music.” He credits his entire career to Johnny McGrath of Petford. “I wouldn’t be where I am today if it wasn’t for Johnny and the entire McGrath family,” he said. “I couldn’t sing in front of people, I’m a bit of a closet singer.

“I didn’t start singing in front of people until I got into the Air Force. “My voice is unique as well; people have trouble matching my voice to my face. “I’m a bit of a Susan Boyle,” he laughed. Being a RAAF Veteran Cliff has experienced many special occasions in his life, including three encounters with the Queen and meeting Nelson Mandela. “He was a great man and it was an honour to stand in his shadow,” he said. “I asked him; ‘how do you know that you’ve done enough for your family and your country? And he responded, well your still breathing aren’t you?”

“I’ve met the Queen three times and she is an amazing lady.” The Queen even went so far as singling Cliff out on several occasions as he was the only Aboriginal RAAF member at that time. “She would walk right up to me and say ‘How are you Clifford’ he laughed. “I was only in the RAAF for seven years.” “But that’s when I started signing in front of people.” At age 8 he was given a guitar, at age 16 he was singing and strumming along to artists like Buddy Holly, Charlie Pride and Jim Reeves, and at 22 he started writing his own material. All of his songs are locally recorded with the help of Kevin Davis. “He’s made me sound like a million dollars,” he said. “I’ve got my own set up here, so I do some work on them before we go over. “Making an album has always been on my wish list.” Cliff’s album includes three singles titled; “Hey Babe”, “Lovely Women” and “Mesmerized” Despite claiming the hardships of making an album, he already has a second one in the works. “If I knew it was this hard, I never would’ve tried to make an album,” he laughed. “We sat around for two weeks thinking of a title for the album. “Eventually we settled on an old murry phrase; ‘Well how then?’” Cliff’s album “Well How Then?” can be heard online. For more information about Cliff, his inspirations and his story, go to his website at cliffwiseman. com/about-cliff

GARLIC BUTTER SMASHED SWEET POTATOES WITH PARMESAN CHEESE Ingredients 4 medium sweet potatoes

April 21 to May 21

Don’t count on others to cover up for your shortcomings. Don’t expect others to live up to their promises and you won’t be disappointed or find yourself stuck with delays.

Method

Gemini

1. Place sweet potatoes in a large pot of salted water. Bring to the boil; cook, covered for 20 -25 minutes or until just fork-tender. Drain well.

A light spray of olive oil 3 tablespoons melted butter

May 22 to June 21

Don’t expect new acquaintances to be completely honest about themselves. You need time to rejuvenate. Invite friends or relatives into your home. This is not the best day to visit relatives who get on your nerves.

Cancer

3. Mix together the butter, garlic and parsley. Pour the mixture over each sweet potato. Sprinkle with salt and pepper and lightly spray with olive oil spray.

June 22 to July 22

Friends and relatives may be hard to take this week. Your domestic scene could continue to be in an uproar this week. Arguments may flare up in your home. Don’t let the cat out of the bag.

Leo

2. Lightly grease a large baking sheet or tray with cooking oil spray. Arrange sweet potatoes onto the sheet and use a fork to LIGHTLY flatten each piece (they will be soft, so try not to press too hard or they will end up breaking and mashed).

WORD SEARCH

C R O S S

July 23 to Aug 22

Get some sound advice and help setting up a workable budget. Partners may try to argue with you; however, you must stand your ground. You must lay down ground rules so that you can complete a job.

Virgo

Aug 23 - Sept 23

Libra

Sept 24 to Oct 23

Be sure you get accurate information. Your tendency to dramatize may be a little much for your partner to take constantly. Social events will be favorable.

WORD

Take time to deal with the concerns of children. You will earn recognition for the work you are doing. Too much too fast will be the attitude surrounding your home environment.

Scorpio

Oct 24 to Nov 22

Throw yourself into your work. Make career changes that may increase your income. Pamper yourself for a change. You can receive recognition for the work you’ve done.

Sagittarius

Nov 23 to Dec 21

Travel could include delays and other minor problems. You may interest some of them in a service you have to offer. You may have difficulties at an emotional level with mates.

IT’S happy days as the Mareeba Bulls have now won two on the trot in a push for a top four finish in the FNQ Football League. With five regular team members absent for their match against the Comets on Saturday night at Borzi Park, the makeshift team put on a master class performance to seal a comfortable 3-0 win. An early penalty, put away by Jamie Carroll, set the scene and the youngsters brought up from the reserve and youth side gained confidence for the remainder of the match. Even though the comets were quicker, more talented, player for player, the young side under the guidance of Jamie Carrol, Kane Alderton and Robert Pendenza rose to

the occasion and cancelled out the Comets’ usual dominance. When Robert Pendenza scored the second deep into the first half belief began to set in and the young bulls played even better. The Comets struggled in front of goal with Jack Centofanti pulling of some great saves to keep a clean sheet. Milan Quintieri sealed the game with a blinding shot from outside the area before full time much to the delight of the vocal supporters. Coach Perry was ecstatic with the result. “The young boys had an opportunity tonight and they took it well, they all contributed to the win,” he said.

“Some of these boys have played two games today; their success creates some depth in the team which we need as we get closer to the finals. “The Bulls’ song will be sung with some enthusiasm tonight, some of them don’t know the words yet, but they’re learning.” In other matches the under 18’s had a solid win and are gaining momentum with each game as they won 3-1. The premier Ladies had a slender loss to Edge Hill United with the final score 2-1 and the reserves continued their dominance with a 6-0 thrashing of the Comets. The Bulls reserves, ladies and youth play at home again this Sunday against JCU Strikers.

EXPRESS SPORT PORT Roosters Kobe Martin escapes the Kangaroos defence on Saturday night.

Roosters big home win THE Atherton Roosters and Cairns Kangaroos battled it out in round 15 of the Cairns District Rugby League premiership on Saturday night at the Mungalli Creek Dairy Stadium. It was the Roosters who finished 36-12 winners with doubles to Nigel Woodleigh, Pio Seci and Ned Blackman. Kangaroos looked in control early in the match as they enjoyed the majority of possession and found themselves on the right side of the penalty count. This helped Kangaroos cross for two tries and a 12-6 lead at the break. But it was the Roosters who returned to the park full

of running and soon had Kangaroos on the ropes as they delivered thirty unanswered points on the back of some strong defence. Roosters Fijian International Pio Seci is set to become a crowd favourite after his entertaining performance which included a long range try scoring effort. Centre Nigel Woodleigh was also full of speed and found plenty open spaces out wide. A treble to Darren Ball and a double to both Tony Woodleigh and Darcey Taylor highlighted in the Roosters reserve grade sides 64-4 win over Kangaroos.

The Roosters went over for eleven tries after leading 36-4 at halftime. Kangaroos forfeited the under 18 match to Atherton. The Senior Roosters host Cairns Brothers in another home game this Saturday, July 27. The club have joined the quest to defeat brain cancer and are holding a “Beanies for Brain Cancer” day in support of the Mark Hughes Foundation. Supporters at Saturday’s game will be encouraged to purchase a beanie for $25 and wear while cheering for the Roosters and also supporting a great cause.

Ill-discipline cost Gators THE Mareeba Gladiators’ disappointing season continued on Saturday night as they fell 2412 to Cairns Brothers at Davies Park. The loss marked three in a row for the Mareeba outfit, and has quelled any chances of a finals berth in 2019. In what has plagued them all season, the Gladiators got off to yet another poor start, conceding two tries in the opening stages of the match to Brothers front rower Abiu Pearson – and in doing so were forced to play catch-up for the remainder of the match. To the Gladiators’ credit, they clawed their way back into the match through a try out of dummy half to their fullback Mitchell Brim. That was quickly followed by an adlib try which saw Thomas Flegler regather a Jayden Edwards kick in the field of play and link up with speedster Eze Harper to score in the corner. Unfortunately for the home side, both tries went unconverted. A crucial try to Brothers with less than five minutes to go in the first half meant the away side took an 18-8 lead into the main break. The second half was a far more gritty affair, as both sides showed resolve defensively on their own line and points proved hard to come by. That was until Brothers

scored a long range try with 14 minutes to go which ensured the away side came away with the two points. Gladiators centre and captain Trent Barnard scored a consolation try with four minutes to go, setting up a 24-12 fulltime scoreline. Barnard said his side’s performance was okay. “It was a slow start as usual and when you’re playing a good side like Brothers you have to be good in every area and we just weren’t tonight,” he said. “We have too many lapses – we have periods where we play really well but then we’ll follow that up with some really poor play. “We score a try and then when we get the ball back and try to take it out of our own end, we get too excited and push passes and make errors.” Barnard said a positive that

can be taken out of the Gladiators’ inconsistent season is the progression of their young players coming through the system. “We’ve got a young side and the positive from this season is that we’re building nicely for next year with this young and enthusiastic crop of young players,” he said. “Also, we’re playing the top sides and not getting beaten by much and we had nine out – so one thing I will say is that the boys are having a dig for each other which is great to see.” It was a much more promising result in Reserve Grade, as the Mareeba Gladiators thumped Brothers 60-22. It doesn’t get any easier for the Gladiators A-Grade side, as they will travel to Mossman this weekend to take on leagueleaders Mossman-Port Douglas Sharks.
