THE Mareeba Returned and Services League branch recognised two of its longest serving members as Gordon Powell and Ronald Ikin received a certificate to signal their 60 years of membership.

Mr Powell (93), was born in Bristol, England and served in World War II before moving

to Australia with his wife and children in 1952.

After eventually settling in Mareeba, Mr Powell got involved with the local RSL branch, and he spoke glowingly about the role it has played throughout his life.

“Friendship and camaraderie are the main things that

stand out about being part of an RSL branch,” he said.

“We share a common story and it’s great to be able to talk about our past.

“There aren’t too many from World War II still around, particularly ex-British servicemen living in Australia, so it’s fantastic when I get the op-

portunity to meet other people who served in the same war, which being a part of an RSL branch provides.”

Kevin Ikin accepted the certificate on behalf of his father Ronald Ikin (95), who is now living in an aged care facility in Cairns.

Mr Ikin echoed Mr Powell’s sentiments.

“The friendship with his fellow servicemen was what dad enjoyed the most,” he said.

“He was shipped off to World War II at a young age just like many other young men at that time, so I think he appreciated talking to others who had a similar life experience.”

Mr Powell and Mr Ikin said they would like to thank the Mareeba RSL branch for recognising their commitment as members.

The newly elected committee of the RSL (Qld) Mareeba Sub Branch, President Lloyd Harvey,

After-hours telehealth service now available RESIDENTS in Mareeba and Atherton can now consult with a doctor after-hours using their phone or a secure video link on their computer with the launch of the new Telehealth Doctor

NQ in the region.

Telehealth Doctor NQ, powered by House Call Doctor and supported by funding from Northern Queensland Primary Health Network (NQPHN), has

registered doctors treating patients for a range of conditions as well as providing prescriptions and medical certificates.

The free service is available to residents seven days a week

in the after-hours period from 6pm-8am on weeknights, and on weekends from 12 noon Saturday until 8am Monday morning.

“Patients can connect with a doctor for a consultation, receive medical advice, or have prescriptions and medical certificates sent to their phone or tablet.

“Call My Doctor Pty Ltd was contracted by NQPHN to

Lakeland dam project proceeds to next stage

Another successful meeting was held last week with RDA FNQ&TS Chair, David Kempton presenting an update to local Landholders and Growers.

THINGS are looking up for the Lakeland Irrigation Area project after the Regional Development Australia Far North Queensland and Torres Strait Inc. (RDA FNQ&TS) recently announced that the proposed dam received a further $10 million in funding to proceed to Stage 2 courtesy of the Federal Government.

RDA FNQ&TS Chair David Kempton attended the Mareeba of Chamber and Commerce’s luncheon at the Mareeba Leagues Club last Thursday to provide community members with an update on the development’s proceedings, and noted what the funding would be utilised for.

“We had our Options Report completed and delivered to Government, and arising out of that the Deputy Prime Minister announced a further $10 million in funding to take it to Stage 2, which will include the pre-investigation around an Environmental Impact Statement, the community impact and as-

sociated infrastructure,” he said.

“That process will take about 18 months, and then from there the dam will go out to tender to design and construct.

“It’s a 200,000 mega litre dam that will yield 80,000 mega litres of water on a fairly secure year to year basis, and will irrigate into about 8-10,000 hec-

tares of highly valuable horticultural and agricultural land.”

Mr Kempton noted that the total funding required for the cost of construction will be dependent on the next stage.

“That funding could come from a combination of commitments, such as the Federal Government’s Water Infrastructure

Fund, the Northern Australia Infrastructure Fund and some input from growers,” he said.

“We’ll also be looking at the State Government for a contribution.”

In what would be the first major water infrastructure development in the region for decades, Mr Kempton alluded to the number of benefits the Lakeland Irrigation Area project will provide for Lakeland, Mareeba and its surrounding areas.

“We hope that the governments would have an appetite to develop the regions and have an understanding of how important water security is for this region specifically,” he said.

“In addition, the improvements to the structure of the access roads to Lakeland and further south to the ports should hopefully bolster the increased need for the movement of agricultural products.”

Mr Kempton said he hopes there are not any blockages to this project as it will act as a good example of the importance of water security and could ensure that the propensity to develop water infrastructure flows on to other regions.

Shire hands down “balanced” budget

THE Mareeba Shire Council handed down their 2019/20 budget at last Wednesday’s council meeting, and it is one being labelled as “balanced” by MSC Mayor Tom Gilmore.

The budget consists of a $27.7 million capital works program, all in the aim of providing Mareeba with a long-term vision according to Cr Gilmore.

“I would hope the community would understand the complexities, thought process and hard work that goes into establishing a budget,” Cr Gilmore said.

“This budget follows a tradition, with an unwavering view

to ensuring the financial future of the Shire.”

An aspect of the budget which could be contentious within the Shire is the 2.5 per cent increase applied to general rates, utilities and service charges; and the additional 0.5 per cent to contribute to rebuilding Council reserves.

“We base our increases on the need to ensure that we maintain a level of service,” Cr Gilmore said.

“If you start deficit budgets and don’t control your spending, then ultimately you’re on a slippery slope to nowhere in my view.

“So given that everything we do as a council is aimed at ensuring we have a balanced budget, one of the critical components of a local government budget is the for funding of depreciation and that’s what we’re doing.”

“So we’re fully funding our depreciation, building our reserves and balancing our budget.”

Cr Gilmore thanked both the Federal and State Governments for their continued contributions to the budget through annual financial assistance grants and project-specific grants which allow for the continuing development of the Shire infrastructure.

"We all know how congested and dangerous Walsh Street can be, particularly outside Target and Coles," Cr Gilmore said.

“Council will be introducing a left-hand only turn

in and out of Target, Coles, Curcio's Bakery and McDonald's from Walsh and Rankin Streets respectively.

“This will consequently ease congestion for motorists by effectively channelling them to the roundabouts at Herberton and Rankin Streets.”

Council will also make minor improvements for pedestrian traffic and mobility scooter access.

Council thanks motorists and pedestrians in advance for their cooperation and patience while these important changes are implemented to improve community safety.

Works are scheduled to be completed before the end of July.

Fitting tribute for community man

THE Mareeba Community Hub will be named in honour of the second longest serving Chairman of Mareeba Shire.

The late Cedric Davies was on Council for 23 years from 1968 to 1991, serving as Chairman for the last 15 years.

Mayor Tom Gilmore said it was entirely appropriate that the new community facility was named in his memory. “Councillor Davies was an exceptional man and a staunch contributor to this community,” he said.

“Out of respect to Cr Davies and his family, to recognise the

outstanding commitment and selfless contribution he made to the community, it is only fitting that the community hub be named in his honour.

Selfless service recognised SOROPTIMIST International is a worldwide volunteer service specifically catering for equal rights and gender equality for all women locally and worldwide, they sit on the UN council making sure that the voices of women and girls are heard.

On May 25 at their recent Regional Conference, Soroptimist International awarded an outstanding local volunteer the award of ‘Women of the year’.

Lesa Pershouse co-director of the local Mareeba ‘Days for Girls’ organisation was awarded ‘International Tropical Tablelands Women of the year’ due to her instrumental influence in the construction, production and distribution of washable menstrual kits for disadvantaged women and girls in developing countries.

The volunteer group ‘Days for Girls’ provides kits to young women and girls in countries such as; Sudan, India, Kenya, Papa New Guinea, Cambodia and many more.

‘Days for Girls’ aims to provide equity for young women and girls surrounding school, work and other opportunities by providing them with washable and portable menstruation kits.

Lesa said she was “incredibly humbled” upon receiving the award.

“There are a lot of other people doing really good things as well,” she said “I feel very grateful to have

received this award.

“I think it’s an acknowledgement of not only my work but the girls in my team and the whole community who have supported us.”

‘Days for Girls’ are aiming to provide women and girls with the opportunities to learn and work uninhibited in order to live a fulfilling life.

“A barrier for young women in developing countries is their period,” she said.

“They’ve got nothing to use so they do down behind a tree or down the river.

“In some countries they have menstruation huts where girls and women have to go and sit and be away from their family.

“Some women and girls are even blackmailed and extorted in exchange for hygiene products in these countries.”

‘Days for Girls’ are a worldwide organisation that provides women with the things they need to live their lives relativity uninhibited.

Lesa was full of praise for her outstanding team.

“I’ve received the award for transforming the lives of young women and girls but I can’t do it alone,” she said.

“I’ve got a great team of ladies.

“We meet once a month at the Mareeba State High School sowing room and we sew and pull kits together, source our own

material and fundraise for that.”

The ‘Days for Girls Mareeba’ organisation is made up of a variety of volunteers and five key members.

Those volunteers include; Rita Tessaro, Tracy Cockrell, Marg Purcell, Leeann Feltrin and Lesa Pershouse On the first Saturday of each month the organisation gets together in the MSHS sewing room to create the kits.

“We get about one or two new volunteers every month,” Lesa said “I could safely say that we have at least 40 women volunteering that at various times will stop by and help out.

“On average we have about 15 to 20 ladies that come every month.”

Lesa is looking to expand ‘Days for Girls’ to incorporate the southern and northern regions of the Tablelands providing more opportunities for those who want to volunteer.

Sewing is not a requirement to volunteer there are numerous opportunities available to help out including undie rolling, cutting out material and more.

‘Days for Girls’ currently have a Krispy Kreme Fundraiser to help support them with procuring supplies for the kits.

Despite (or perhaps because of) these differences, a business succession plan is essential if you plan to pass the farm on to the next generation.

What is succession planning?

Succession planning takes a holistic approach to the development of a plan which will allow a smooth transition of the business and any assets with minimal disruption to the business or, more importantly, family relationships.

Properly done, succession planning covers everything from reviewing the family

trust, updating your Will and Enduring Power of Attorney, to facilitating family meetings to help avoid confusion or ill-feeling among your family.

Good succession planning usually involves your accountant, financial planner, and lawyer to ensure that everything is done in as tax effective and beneficial a manner as possible.

When succession planning for the family farm it is also important that you recognise the complexity of family relationships and consider how they may impact on the plan, particularly if there are children that are not involved in the business.

Things to consider when developing a succession plan As every family is different, so is every succession plan.

There is no one size fits all and anyone who tells you otherwise probably isn’t doing their job properly. It is im-

portant that you involve your accountant, financial planner, and lawyer as they will all work with you to ensure the best possible outcome for your farm and your family.

When preparing for your initial meeting to discuss your succession plan, key questions to think about are: 1. What are the needs and aspirations of each family member, and do they want a future working on the family farm? If so, what do they see as their roles?

2. If there is more than one successor, should the plan treat them equally or fairly? For example, passing an interest in the family farm to a child not working on the farm may not be fair to a child who has spent many years working on the farm.

3. Will you have enough money to retire on and what will your source of income be after retirement?

4. How will the transfer of assets be funded and, if needed, can the business support a higher level of debt?

5. Do the key terms of a buy/ sell agreement need to be agreed and documented now, to avoid confusion down the track?

There are many other factors to consider if you are thinking about the future and it can be overwhelming at times.

The key to success is to know what you want to accomplish and then to get the advice you need to accomplish your goals.

Skybury reap fruits of their labour

Skybury General Manager Candy MacLaughlin is ecstatic after the business was able to break a farm record for papaya production recently.

TABLELANDS business Skybury achieved a farm record recently as they picked over 100,000 kilograms and packaged almost 20,000 cartons of papaya.

The record comes as a result of an expansion plan that the family owned and operated business has implemented over the past 18 months, where they look to capitalise on a papaya market that has the potential to grow exponentially.

Skybury General Manager Candy MacLaughlin said the business is looking to add greater versatility to their current model.

“The statistics show us that roughly 15 per cent of Australians eat papaya, so we’re hoping to be able to grow that by 5 per cent,” she said.

“And we’re not just doing this to experience growth for ourselves; we want fellow papaya farmers to do the same as everyone benefits when the industry grows as a whole.”

While their recent farm record indicates the efficiency of their expansion strategies to date, Ms MacLaughlin noted

their plans to further bolster production.

“We surpassed our previous production record for papayas by about 5 per cent,” she said.

“However we haven’t reached our growth trajectory yet and we’re estimating we’ll grow by another 20 per cent – of which is dependent on how successful we are in terms of our plantings and how much land we turn into production.

“And we are aiming to achieve that by August, so it will be quite sharp.”

Ms MacLaughlin said in addition to Skybury experiencing an uptick in trade as a result of greater papaya production, she also noted that they have placed a focus on promoting the enormous health benefits papaya consumption provides.

“We want really want to get people eating papaya,” she said.

“It is filled with anti-oxidants, peptides and vitamins and is a critical thing to be eating in the winter months.

“It’s also extremely versatile; in the café for example we make soups, jams, chutneys and salsas that include papaya.

“And we do that through value-adding, by taking papaya that has a blemish and isn’t market ready and using it to create other products.”

Ms McLaughlin said she would like to thank Skybury’s staff of 80 people who work tirelessly around the clock.

“They are a great team who pushed together to achieve this production record,” she said.

Ms McLaughlin said the driver behind this expansion was her father Ian MacLaughlin, who oversees the entire operation in his role as Skybury Director.

“He’s great at what he does and he was recently nominated for the Syngenta Grower of the Year to be presented in Melbourne next week, the only grower of which is from Queensland,” she said.

Tablelanders at risk of skin cancer Melanoma is the most dangerous type of skin cancer and Queensland has the highest rates in the world.

The Atherton Tablelands is especially at risk with approximately 50% more than the Australian average (Australian Cancer Atlas).

Businesses encouraged to join advocacy group MAREEBA businesses are being encouraged to kick off the upcoming financial year by joining the Mareeba Chamber of Commerce.

The advocacy body promotes Mareeba as a vibrant, retail, trade supply and professional service commercial centre, all the while representing the interests of its members.

President Joe Moro said the chamber was front and centre when it mattered, regardless of the issue or debate.

“We have actively lobbied federal, state and local governments on a range of issues including, but not limited to, reliability improvements to the Kuranda Range Road, future water needs for the region and

maintaining and improving health services in the community,” Mr Moro said.

“Every community needs a voice, and as the key organisation representing the interests of the business community in Mareeba, the chamber takes this role very seriously.”

Duesburys Accountants and Advisors Director and chamber member Andre Soncin said the chamber played an active role in representing not just the business community but also the residents of the Mareeba district.

“It has kept the community informed about developments and issues that affect them as well as providing a forum for its members to voice their concerns,” Mr Soncin said.

“The chamber has been instrumental in promoting the area as a place to do business and encourages sustainable development.”

The chamber lends its support to locally-driven issues and works closely with like-minded organisations including Mareeba Shire Council and the Mareeba Heritage Museum and Visitor Information Centre to promote Mareeba.

Dimbulah locals thanked for their service

Maxine and Denis Smith were recognised at last week's MSC council meeting for their years of service in business in Dimbulah.

THE Dimbulah business community will be saying goodbye to stalwarts Maxine and Denis Smith as they will be moving on from their roles as lessees of the Dimbulah Swimming Pool and Dimbulah Caravan Park.

Mr and Mrs Smith have been lessees of the swimming pool and caravan park for 14 years, and in that time have established an enviable reputation for their outstanding customer service and commitment to the community.

Their contribution was recognised at a Mareeba Shire Council (MSC) meeting last Wednesday, where MSC Mayor Tom Gilmore and Councillor Nipper Brown outlined the integral role Mr and Mrs Smith have played in Dimbulah.

“We very much like to celebrate people in our shire,” Cr Gilmore said.

“And that’s why we have invited Maxine and Denis here today, in recognition of how they’ve managed the facility over the many years – it has been exemplary.”

Cr Brown echoed Cr Gilmore’s sentiments.

“I have had many dealings with Maxine and Denis and they have been an asset to the Dimbulah community,” he said.

“They aren’t leaving Dimbulah, however I would like to take this opportunity to thank them for their years of service as operators of the pool and caravan park in the town.”

Locals complete gruelling BNT Mareeba State High students Dailin Joshua, Lea Micieli and Elmidin Mahmud are off to Brisbane in July for round two of the Australian Brain Bee Challenge.

Lyn Kincaid and Arthur Aebischer arrived in Cooktown on Sunday completing the BNT.

MAREEBA locals Lyn Kincaid and Arthur Aebischer rode into Cooktown on Sunday after having completed the gruelling Bicentennial National Trail (BNT).

The premier long-distance trek covers more than 5000 kilometres which saw Ms Kincaid ride from Healesville in Victoria to her eventual destination Cooktown.

Lyn and Athur began their trek on February 4, and it has been a campaign that has required meticulous preparation and immense discipline.

“Lyn and Arthur spent months drying food in a dehydrator and carefully weighing,

measuring and dividing the food into parcels to be posted at regular intervals,” Lyn’s daughter Nancy Kincaid said.

Nancy said this longplanned journey almost didn’t eventuate however, after Lyn severely injured her knee just weeks before the trek – and received the awful news that her son had been diagnosed with incurable cancer.

“They persevered with mental strength and grit,” she said.

“She is such an incredible woman and someone who is an inspiration to everyone who knows her.

“The BNT is just one of a

number of treks Lyn and Arthur have participated in, they have such a get and up and go attitude about them which is so great to see.”

It is also an amazing individual achievement for Lyn personally, as her completion meant she was only the third woman in the world to complete the trek on a pushbike at 70 years of age.

“This is an incredible achievement,” Nancy said.

“Age is no barrier to greatness.”

Nancy said she hopes that when they retire they can continue to pursue further amazing achievements.

Brainiac’s burst into Brisbane THE Australian Brain Bee Challenge (ABBC) is a competition that was developed and implemented by the Australasian Neuroscience Society in 2006.

Since 2008 Mareeba State High School has entered every year and succeeded in progressing into the State finals every year never advancing with less than three students.

This year was no exception with Year 10 students Dailin Joshua, Lea Micieli and Elmidin Mahmud selected to participate in the second round of the ABBC. To qualify for the State/Regional finals students must score in the top 6% in Queensland for

the first round quizzes, the finals will be held in Brisbane on July 17.

The competition not only provides a chance to educate people about neuroscience but dispel misconceptions surrounding neurological and mental illnesses.

MSHS Gifted and Talented Co-ordinator Stefanie Prizmic was proud of the students.

“They’ve been reading a 100 plus page neuroscience and neuroanatomy book in preparation for the finals,” she said.

“That is a first year university book; they’ve had to do all this whilst also maintaining their studies.

“They practice for the Brain Bee in their own time.”

The ABBC is only open to students in year 10 and contains four rounds of competition.

The first being an online quiz, the second is the state finals held in the state capitals.

The third round is the national finals where one students from each state and two from New Zealand are chosen to compete against each other to become the Brain Bee Champion.

For the fourth and final round the chosen student will compete on the international level and will be flown to South Korea for the international Brain Bee (IBB).

Outgoing president of two years Denis McKinley reflected on his time as president with the club celebrating its 60th year of service and the upgrade of the Bunny Seary Lookout as the highlights of his time in charge.

New incoming Lions President Gary Searle pledged to continue Denis’s work and also look to establish a Leo Club at local high schools to encourage high school students be become more involved in the community and to give them an insight into the workings of the Lions and Lioness Club.

The Mareeba Lioness club also had a very successful year.

Outgoing President Kathy Garozzo said contributions to the Mareeba Hospital Foundation, Meal on Wheels, football Canteen and Mareeba Turf Club kept the club involved with the community and fundraising efforts were extraordinary.

While the Pink Ribbon Garden party was their biggest fundraiser, the Lionesses have raised over $100,000 towards Cancer Council Queensland over the last 12 years. Cathy handed over the reins to new Lioness President Lyn Dyer who will continue the fundraising efforts the lionesses are known for.

1. Preheat oven to 190°C. 2. Sprinkle each chicken breast with salt and pepper.

3. In a large ovenproof skillet, heat the oil over medium-high heat. Add the chicken and cook for 6-7 minutes, turning once. You want the chicken nice and browned on the outside. (It doesn’t have to be cooked all the way through yet.) Set chicken on a plate and cover tightly with foil.

4. Remove skillet from heat and add the broth, lime juice, onion, cilantro, and red pepper. Return to heat. Cook and stir to scrape up the browned bits from the bottom of the skillet. Malanda locals Aiden Carson and Keyarn Porter will be playing in the U15 Merit side and U16 sides’ as well.

The North Queensland Championship will be played in early July, the players will be flying down for a training camp prior to the Championship.

Mareeba cricketers claim podium

THE Men’s E grade Indoor Cricket Grand Final was played at Cairns Indoor Sports on Friday June 14.

The two teams playing were 4880 and Sparkys, they fought a pitched battle with 4880 coming out with an 80 run win over their hometown rival.

4880 captain Sandra Gaggiano was ecstatic about the win.

“It was a good, well fought game,” she said.

“I’m really happy that we came away with the win.

“We play because we love and enjoy the sport.”

The first season of indoor sports in Cairns is now over with all grand finals being played, the second season of the year started up on Monday June 17.

Sandra was trying to encourage other people to try indoor cricket.

“You don’t have to be good you just have to show up,” she said.

“It’s a good social sport.

“People should almost definitely come and try it out.”

New Kids on the Court at Mareeba Tennis St Stephen’s lose Mareeba Tennis Club in conjunction with the Queensland Government are proud to announce a new initiative to get 8-11 year old kids that have never experienced the sport of tennis on the court.

The 10 week program aims to take beginner players and introduce the skills needed to play the sport over a series of free weekly coaching sessions. This will be conducted by a qualified coach with modified coaching equipment.

At the end of the coaching sessions the kids will be taught matchplay and will be encouraged to participate for their school for the inaugural perpetual trophy.

Eligible kids from around the Mareeba area are invited to register by contacting the Mareeba tennis club.

“The New Kids on the Court program promises to be a lot of fun, and you don’t need to know how to play tennis to come along and join in. It might just be the start of a new interest and new friendships,” Mareeba Tennis Club President Mark Keating said.

The program will run from July 19 to September 20 on Fridays after school and registration is required by June 21, 2019.

half the battle St Stephens Catholic College played a heated battle against St Augustine’s last Wednesday for a spot in the next round of the Bill Turner Cup. St Stephens played a hard fought battle but unfortunately lost to a more experienced and older side.

Sport Co-Ordinator Keiran Morley was unhappy with the result but was proud nonetheless.

“The boys tried their best,” he said.

“St Augustine’s abilities were just better on the day.

“We’re looking towards next year.”

The young St Stephens’s side will be looking to bounce back next year reinvigorated with fresh players and more experience.

“We had 34 players try out this year and majority were on the younger end of the scale,” he said.

The St Stephens girl’s side is playing Cairns State High on the 27 of June and is looking to push the St Stephens name forward into the next round.

Clean sweep for Mareeba Bulls

WITH results going their way over the weekend the Mareeba Bulls are starting to claw their way back into contention of a top four finish.

Another master performance across all grades saw the Bulls clinch 4 from 4 on Sunday away to the Stratford Dolphins.

A 3-1 win to the premiers saw them move from last to fifth on the ladder with a game in hand.

The Bulls started strongly

and should have scored a couple of early goals but Stratford scrambled well to deny the bulls an early lead. The away side took the lead midway through the first half with some excellent passing in the final third with Jamie Carroll slotting home from close range.

The 1-0 advantage doubled soon after the resumption of play in the second half with young Dylan Cummings showing a lot

of promise with lots of awareness to put the Bulls 2-0 up.

There were some nervous moments when the Dolphins struck back with 20 minutes left on the clock but a superb volley from midfielder Justin Sabbadin to make it 3-1 put an end to Stratford’s glimmer hopes of a comeback.

In the reserve grade, seven goals and three red cards, had spectators abuzz and lots to talk

about.

Central defender Jamie Wilesmith and striker Liam Leporati both got straight red cards but by that time the Bulls had gone out to a commanding 5-1 lead, a late goal to Stratty gave the Bulls a 5-2 win.

The Lady Prems also had a tough encounter but pipped Stratford by a goal to take home a 3-2 win.

The under 18’s had a stroll

in the park with a 5-2 win with Coach Luch Avolio stating his side is starting to hit their straps and looking to peak at the right time of the season as they jostle to take top honours by seasons end.

On Friday Night the Fillies and the Atherton Eagles ladies did battle at Borzi Park with the Eagles proving a hand full and have come a long way since the start of the season the 2-2- draw

was a testament to that after an initial drubbing in the corresponding game at the start of the season.

The men’s second division were the only Bulls outfit to register a loss with the Atherton Eagles swooping to an away 3-1 win.

There is no football this coming weekend due to a bye but the Bulls return to action at home on Sunday July 7.

Atherton ladies make grand final THE Atherton Roosters ladies team will run out this weekend as they take on Innisfail in the grand final of the inaugural Cairns District Rugby League women’s touch competition.

Both Atherton and Innisfail finished the regular season on 16 competition points apiece, and both will be looking to put

on their best performances and create local rugby league history by being crowned first ever women’s touch champions.

Tableland Cup clash THE Mareeba Gladiators AGrade outfit have continued their winning ways after a decisive 32-10 win over the Edmonton Storm at Davies Park on Saturday night.

Saturday’s victory marks three straight for the men in green and gold, and ensures they are well and truly within arms reach of the top five.

Their two previous wins have been built on the back of their defence, and that was once again on display as they were able to hold their opposition to just two tries.

In addition, while their attack has been a work in progress throughout most of this season, their combinations appeared to click against the Storm which is something their captain Trent Barnard was extremely pleased with.

“Our first half of footy was probably our best all year, we were completing our sets which is something we’ve struggled with this year so that was definitely good to see,” he said.

“We’ve worked much better as a unit over the past few weeks and I think that’s showing in our performances – it also helps that we have a healthy and full-strength squad as it allows our combinations to continue to improve.

“That’s particularly noticeable in our attack, we’ve made an improvement there because we have been having the same spine each week.”

Their win sets up for a mammoth showdown with Tableland rivals the Atherton Roosters, who got the better of the Gladiators in their two previous meetings, one of which was a trial.

The Atherton Roosters will be hoping to improve on their last month of footy, which has consisted of just one win in their last four outings.

The Tableland Cup will be up for grabs, and Barnard said it is a fixture he is really looking forward to.

that we can do well as we are a much different team to the one that played in Atherton,” he said.
