Local Lions donate Trauma Teddies ON January 23 this year District Manager of Community Corrections, Laurie Henley said she had seen one of the Lions Trauma Teddies being used in a counselling session at Lotus Glen Correctional Centre.

The Community Corrections office supervises a number of female offenders on the Atherton Tablelands who are, or have been, going through extreme trauma through loss of children and immediate family members, and also who may have been subject to extreme domestic violence.

The Lions Club of Atherton

was asked if Community Corrections could also participate in their Trauma Teddy project.

The teddies are bought from Lions clubs in Victoria and are then donated to the Queensland Ambulance Service, Atherton hospital, Carinya Home for The Aged and Atherton police station.

The club chose to assist as long as consent was obtained from Lions Club of Mareeba, as the Lotus Glen Correctional Centre and Community Corrections is located within that club’s territory.

THE Maternity Ward of Atherton Hospital now has a Cuddle Cot which was donated recently

by Soroptimist International of the Tropical Tableland. (SITT) Cuddle Cots have been developed to help parents who have lost a baby.

SITT publicity officer Sylvia Edwards said dealing with the death of a baby is incredibly difficult event for parents.

“The Cuddle Cot has a cooling unit that controls the temperature of the baby so that bereaved parents are given valuable extra time to be with their loved one thereby assisting them in the grieving process.”

The purchase of the Cuddle Cot was a major fundraising project for Soroptimist International of the Tropical Tableland over the last couple of years. The unit cost $4600 and the money

raised was by holding Mother’s Day and Christmas Raffles.

Soroptimist International of the Tropical Tableland is a women’s group who meet every second Tuesday for a business meeting at Community Services Tablelands (CST) in Atherton and every fourth Tuesday at 6.30pm for a dinner meeting at the Atherton Hotel where a guest speaker is invited to attend.

Fund raising events are held on regular basis to support women in need as well as provide funds for the purchase of equipment for Atherton Hospital, Carinya Home for the Aged and Oz Care in Malanda.

Quad bike future set to hurt local businesses Kevin Dunn of Mareeba Yamaha is worried about the impacts of quad bikes being pulled out of Australia.

by October 2020, with Honda and Yamaha also announcing they will pull out by 2021.

“Quad bikes are the leading cause of fatalities in Australia of all consumer products that aren’t regulated,” said Assistant

Treasurer Michael Sukkar, who announced the new regulations on behalf of the federal government in 2019.

Sam Best from Extreme Motorcycles in Atherton is a Polaris dealer and she claims it’s not just going to hurt their business.

“Being a local small business (Polaris pulling out of Australia) is going to hurt us, but it’s also hurting small famers. There are some local Mango and Avocados farmers who need quads to spray their crop but side by side’s are too big to get around their property,” “The same for rounding up cattle, you wouldn’t want to be rounding up large feral bulls on a motorbike.”

National Farmers’ Federation chief executive Tony Mahar welcomed the new regulations as a “great step forward” but admitted not all farmers have been seeking the extra regulation.

“I think there are various views – there always is – but ultimately the facts speak,” Mr Mahar said.

“There are 16 deaths a year – more than one person a month, six people a day presenting at hospital.

“The facts don’t lie.”

About 60 per cent of all quad bike accidents are caused by roll-over” Mr Sukkar said.

It’s a decision that has polarised local farming communities, ATV dealers and manufactures.

The manufacturers have repeatedly stated they would rather abandon the Australian market than meet new federal safety standards requiring them to fit operator protection devices or roll bars to all new quad bikes.

The Federal Chamber of Automotive Industries have strongly opposed mandatory roll-over protection, arguing instead that behavioural changes such as helmet use, as well as preventing children and passengers from using quad bikes, would be more effective.

Mareeba Yamaha dealer Kevin Dunn said that the decision is going to hurt his business.

“About 60 per cent of my business comes from selling ATV’s. Some people are claiming that side by side transport will now be sold in its place, but there’s some places side by sides can’t go,” Said Mr Dunn.

Young leaders shine at Youth Speaks

THE local leg of the annual Lions Youth of the Year was held by the Mareeba Lions Club at the Cedric Davies Memorial Hub on Saturday.

Five students, three from Mareeba State High and two from St Stephen’s Catholic College, competed for the opportunity to represent the area at the zone judging to be held on March 14.

The competition is designed to foster, encourage and develop leadership in conjunction with other citizenship qualities of our youth, at the age when they are about to enter the fields of employment and higher education.

The qualities sought after, apart from academic attainments, are those of leadership, personality, sportsmanship,

public speaking and good citizenship.

In only the second time since 1994, a student has gone on to win in consecutive years with Mareeba State High school student Gamuchirai Makoti drawing on her experience in winning the competition last year to win again in 2020.

Gamuchirai is a member

of the school student council, an inter year leader and executive of the schools Performing Arts Excellence Club after completion of her secondary studies she aspires to specialize in forensics in the field of psychiatry.

All of the students that took part in the competition are to be congratulated for their efforts.

STEPPING DOWN: Cr Owen Byrnes has decided not to run again for Tablelands Regional Council Councillor.

ONE of the Tablelands Regional Council’s (TRC) more colourful characters has decided not to recontest his position as a TRC Councillor for the upcoming 2020 local government elections.

Division 4 Councillor Owen Byrnes says that personal and business issues have gotten in the way.

“I’m a little disappointed that I haven’t been able to get my personal and business affairs in order to run for the upcoming TRC elections,” he said.

“I think this council needs really strong solid leadership and I’m hoping a new team will do that. I would have loved to be part of that team, but I’m not going to commit to something I can’t give 100 per cent too.”

Councillor Byrnes says he has had a number of highlights working in council over the past few years.

“I believe that getting administration more focused on delivering of capital budgets. When I started they were only delivering 60% of their capital budget, now we have delivered over 90 per cent of capital budget,” “Also more efficiency and better delivery of services to the residents of the Tablelands and we have been far more proactive in receiving funding from the state and federal governments.”

Even though Councillor Byrne will officially finish up next

month he is planning on keeping his finger on the pulse of local events, the new council and Division 4 where he now lives.

As for the upcoming election in Division 6 “I think Bernie (Wilce) has a lot of experience and a lot of community knowledge. Darryl (Drury) is very passionate because he has had a few goes at running for council and it’s obviously something he wants to do. But at this point in time I think Bernie is offering a better direction.”

As for endorsing someone for Mayor, Councillor Byrnes isn’t mincing his words.

“Running for Mayor without council experience is a very ambitions move. By the time you worked out what you’re doing you would be so far into your term of council it would nearly be over,” “There are only two candidates running for mayor with local government experience, and without a doubt I would have to endorse Rod Marti. Due to his connection to the people and the local farming community.”

Even though Councillor Byrnes is hanging up is councillors shoes for now, he said never say never at running again.

“Maybe in years to come I would like to have another go.”

The last council meeting for the current TRC is this Thursday March 12.

Another local who got their nomination in at the last minute is Peter Beattie who has nominated for the position of Mayor at the Tablelands Regional council (TRC).

Even though Mr Beattie shares his name with another famous Queensland politician he claims there is no relation to the ex-premier politically or through ancestry.

“A few of the older generation may know who I am, but the younger generation may not, so a few people may get me mixed up with the ex-premier,” “I knew Joe Paronella wasn’t running so I thought I would put my hand up, I’m a local and love the area.

Mr Beattie says he has the experience to run for the top job.

“I was acting chairman at the (former) Burdekin Agricultural College; I’ve also been involved with rural youth, football and Apex.”

MR Beattie who lives near Malanda and works on roadwork construction around the gulf says some local roads should be fixed as a matter of priority “Some of the roads in local farming communities aren’t being sealed all the way to the properties, even though they are paying the same rates as everyone else.

“Some of the farmers from out of town don’t get town water or sewerage or garbage collections, so what are they actually getting for their rates?”

“I’m just hoping to look after

the betterment of the community and try to look after our local businesses, and some of service clubs and non for profits” he said.

“We also need to provide more work for the younger generation and try and keep them here on the Tablelands, there’s not a lot things for the younger generation to look forward to.”

Another local who launched his local council aspirations at the last moment is Mareeba Physio Dean Mineall.

Dean and his wife have lived in Mareeba for the past two years and said “they both enjoy the sense of community and welcoming spirit.

“I have decided to run as an independent candidate for Council and coming from a professional background where critical thinking is vital and common sense must be applied to get things done, I offer my services to the voters of the Mareeba Shire.”

Mr Mineall says that his medical background will help as a possible future MSC councillor.

“My vision for the Mareeba Shire is to continue to support the growth that has continued for several years here in the shire,” “I want to provide leadership to support the continued development of the local hospital since I have experience in running large government budgets in health and age care.

“It is with this business skillset that I will bring to council, so it can continue it work to ensure growth, especially since there will be a very large gap in experience with half the long term councillors not standing this term.

“It is critical that the council have a mixed experience in its councillors to be flexible enough to allow it to respond quickly to upcoming opportunities.” said Mr Mineall.

NOMINATIONS closed on March 3 for the upcoming Queensland council elections, with a few late starters getting their nominations in at the very last minute.

Terry Newman has put his hand up as a candidate for the upcoming Mareeba Shire Council (MSC) elections. The fifty seven year old earthmoving contractor says he has “forty years’ experience in the earthmoving, mining and construction industries.”

“I currently reside in the south west of the shire and being Irvinebank born and raised, I’ve been getting my guts shaken out on Mareeba Shire Roads for fifty seven years.”

Mr Newman, who lives at Barwidgi Station near Mount Garnett, says that transport and roads are some of the more pressing issues facing MSC at the moment.

“Driving a semi-trailer along Ootan Road at ten kilometres per hour was the light bulb moment when I reached the decision that I could follow normal practice and sit around and whinge or nominate for council and have a go at getting these goat tracks up to a semblance of a decent road.

“Normal practise of candidates running for public office is to tell the voting public what they want to hear. Well sorry that’s not going to happen because I live in the real world and I’ve got a bad habit of telling the truth and actually saying it as it is.” he said Mr Newman says the biggest impediment to Mareeba Shire reaching its full potential is the lack of a decent transport network in and out of the shire.

“There is Ootan Road, the only road train route from Mareeba Shire to the Southern Markets, a wonderful ninety kilometre stretch that can take up to four hours to negotiate in a triple road train.

Chinese company given the green light to own dairy farmers

THE Australian Competition and Consumer Commission (ACCC) has given the green light to a $600 million deal that

would see China Mengniu Dairy acquire Dairy Farmers.

Under the deal, which still needs Foreign Investment Re-

view Board approval, Mengniu will acquire big-name Australian dairy and juice brands including Dairy Farmers, Big M, Pura, Daily Juice and Berri, the sale also includes Malanda Milk.

The Dairy Farmers Co-operative Milk Co. was formed on January 15, 1900, it was then sold to Japanese company Kirin in 2008, becoming a brand of National Foods, ending 108 years as a co-operative company.

After Kirin Holdings acquired the alcoholic beverage company, Lion Nathan, in 2009, National Foods & Lion Nathan merged to become “Lion Nathan National Foods” which later became Lion Dairy & Drinks.

The proposed Mengniu/Lion deal was announced in Novem-

ber, shortly after Treasurer Josh Frydenberg gave conditional approval to Mengniu to buy an Australian infant formula company.

Director of the Dairy Farmers Milk co-op and Milla Milla Dairy Farmer James Geraghty has said “Some people may be upset that another Australian asset has been sold to overseas interests, but Dairy Farmers has not been in Australian hands for some time,” he said.

“Really, if we had a choice between a Japanese brewer who doesn't want to be here and a Chinese milk company who wants to be here, we'll take the Chinese.”

Mr Geraghty is hoping that the new owners will play hardball with Coles and Woolworths

“Australians are going to have to pay more for milk, or there won’t be any.”

Even though it will change from one set of overseas hands to another, Member for Hill, Shane Knuth said “he has always been a strong supporter of Australian ownership and that sadly relying on a foreign company reveals what little effort our governments have played to protect the dairy industry.”

KAP Leader and State member for Traeger Robbie Katter said it’s quite clear major businesses and government are closely aligned with China, after the ACCC cleared the way for China Mengniu Dairy to takeover Lion’s dairy and drinks portfolio.

“Unlike Australia, China’s

government looks after the Chinese people first and foremost,” he said.

“It’s no secret that they have an insatiable appetite for our goods and industry and when it comes to their interests compared to ours, of course we will lose.”

The Member for Cook Cynthia Lui said “that under the Palaszczuk Labor Government we have engaged in trade missions to Indonesia, Korea, Hong Kong and China to build export opportunities and attract investment,” “Foreign investment is good for Queensland. It is good for Queensland’s economy, and it is good for Queensland jobs.”

MORE detections of the invasive moth pest Fall armyworm (Spodoptera frugiperda) have been made in Far North Queensland.

Suspect moths collected at South Johnstone, Tolga and Lakeland have been confirmed by Department of Agriculture and Fisheries’ entomologists to be Fall armyworms.

These latest detections follow recently confirmed detections on two Torres Strait Islands, at Bamaga and in the north-west Gulf country and is further evidence of the pest’s ability to spread quickly.

A surveillance program for Fall armyworm, which commenced on the Atherton Tablelands, Innisfail, Port Douglas, Mossman, Lakeland and Cairns regions last week, will be expanded as more traps become available.

Fall armyworm is known to feed on more than 350 plant species, including maize, cotton, rice, sorghum, sugarcane, wheat, and many vegetable and fruit crops, and have caused significant economic losses overseas.

Fall armyworm includes two subpopulations, or strains, that are morpho-

logically indistinguishable but differ in their host plant preference and certain physiological features. Diagnosis by a laboratory is required to identify the strain.

Destruction of crops can happen almost overnight when infestation levels are high.

Fall armyworm (Spodoptera frugiperda) is a new exotic pest that has been detected in Queensland.

While this pest is native to tropical and subtropical regions of the Americas, since 2016 it has rapidly spread to and throughout Africa, the Indian subcontinent, China and Southeast Asia.

vae march in large numbers away from sites where their food has run out. Mature larval stages will sometimes march into cereal crops in late winter and cause serious damage, particularly on the edges of paddocks.

Larvae shelter during the day and emerge after sunset to feed.

Hosts Common armyworm: barley, oat, wheat, native pasture grasses and perennial grass seed crops.

Northern armyworm: sorghum, maize, barley, wheat and rice.

Dayfeeding armyworm: mostly grasses, but also sugarcane, maize and sorghum.

Lawn armyworm: barley, grasses, nut grass, oat, wheat and most lawn grasses.

These may also be may be confused with other armyworms (e.g. Sugarcane armyworm (Leucania stenographa) and lesser armyworm (Spodoptera exigua).

New chair to lead Mareeba Hospital Foundation

THE Mareeba Friends of the Hospital Foundation have welcomed their new chair Mr Neil Setford from Tolga, who is taking over the role from Ida Portella.

Ida held the role for over seven years and is happy to be pass-

ing the baton to Neil with some friendly words of advice.

“Just be you Neil, and continue to collaborate and work with this amazing community and local organisations who have supported us in the past, through various fundraising

events, ensure you action your ideas and with your expertise and skills you will take the Mareeba Friends to a new level.”

In the past seven years, Ida believes that the foundation has donated around $500,000 to the hospital from various raffles, sales and fundraisers as well as the trolley service at the hospital.

“We have approximately 30 volunteers who give their time to ensure they can offer the trolley service to patients at our hospital. Patients can purchase a selection of personal items and other goods and all profits go back to the Mareeba Friends projects.”

Ida said she will stay on the committee to support Neil “I will stay on to support Neil and the committee as I believe the Mareeba Friends plays an important role and to continue to raise funds to improve patient services at the Mareeba Hospital.”

Neil officially became the chair on the February 26 and admits that he has big shoes to fill and it’s been a steep learning curve.

“I’ve been down to Cairns to learn what we can and can’t do and I’ve been spending my time meeting all the wonderful volunteers and also having meetings with the hospital,” “Our job at the foundation is not to provide things that Queensland health should be providing, our job is to provide things that are needed by the pa-

tients and the staff.

“Our main goal is to make sure that the patient and staff are happy.”

Neil says the next project for the foundation is to move the palliative care room.

“They want to move the palliative care room so that people can have some private space to greave. If anyone would like to donate to the foundation head to the website and all the money that we raise here stays here in Mareeba.”

A little about myself I am Edward ‘Nipper’ Brown, I grew up in Julatten and did my high school years in Mareeba. I left school at age 15 and went working on cattle stations across the Gulf and down in the Maranoa district.

I became head stockman at age 20 and then I decided to change professions and joined Telstra. The early years were spent in the Townsville area and after about 7 years I got theyearning to return home.

I got married in 1992 and 2 weeks later we moved to Thursday Island, 2 years later we moved to Hughenden and then 3 years later moved to Charters Towers.

When the opportunity came to return home to Mareeba with our children in 2000 we did. I was filling in a management position at this stage.

After 3 years I decided to apply for redundancy and succeeded and was made redundant.

Then in Mutchilba I began running my own business which began as a contractor back to Telstra. I then added playing music at functions, earthmoving and in 2007 tendered for and won a contract for the Mareeba Landfill. That was the beginning of working in waste.

Over the years up until 2012 I was successful in other tenders and went from 1 landfill to currently having 2 landfills and 6 transfer stations with 14 staff. All of that happened before I became a councillor, except for

Chillagoe and Almaden, that happened with the last tenders. Currently if there is any agenda item which involves the waste I declare a conflict and leave the room – that won’t change and the contract will run its course.

During my life at all locations I became heavily involved in all types of sport, participating, administrating and coaching at higher levels. These sports are rodeo, cricket indoor and outdoor, indoor netball, basketball, beach volleyball and rugby league with the latest being athletics of which I was the Tablelands Little Athletics Centre manager for a period, and touch football which I played and coached everywhere I have been. I am a strong supporter of all sports.

Why do I want to be Mayor?

From day one I have said that I wanted to be here long term and would one day go for Mayor.

As the Mayor you get more opportunities to have conversations with authorities, government bodies and leaders of industry. People that can have the conversation with the next level or open the next door to achieve the ideas or goals of Council.

There is so much we can achieve for our shire.

I am a firm believer of, even if it is not our core business and it effects my residents and community, it then reflects in the negative toward our shire, therefore it is our business.

Areas such as youth crime, health, water security and Main Roads.

I do have a passion for this shire and all its communities. I have proven this

over the 6 years on Council by being in the outside areas regularly, talking and participating in the community and functions.

Why a Team?

The benefit to ratepayers is you get a group of individual voices with a common view and vision about most things, but not everything.

A group that can disagree and then move on with no prejudice and work together for the betterment of the shire. Under no circumstance is any one of us compelled to agree with the others.

The benefit to us is greater, as in we can support one another, share resources, bounce ideas off one another and share contacts.

Why am I the best person for the job?

I have 6 years experience on Council. I can remember vividly the first 2 years and decisions we had to make to put us in the position we now are.

I have 15 years running my own business adjusting as we grew, not being frightened to look outside the box for opportunities.

I have 20 years in the corporate world, the latter part in management roles.

I will promise that I as Mayor will continue our current path and continually look at opportunities to help all our businesses and welcome other industries into our whole shire.

I will be more open and available, providing opportunities for all to talk to me without coming to the office.

New party for Far North Queensland WHITSUNDAY MP Jason Costigan has been out and about in Far North Queensland looking for potential candidates for his new political party “NQ First”.

The Party was announced in September of last year and was registered the following month.

Tableland musicians participate in state wide music program TWO schools across the Tablelands have had several of their students participate in this year’s Griffith Universities State Honours Ensemble Program (SHEP).

Both Malanda and Atherton State High Schools (MSHS, ASHS) entered their students into the performing arts program. 198 young musicians were selected across 33 North Queensland Schools 14 of those being from the Tablelands.

Since the program’s inception in 2003, 1900 students have participated in SHEP. Held last weekend at St Mary’s Catholic College from

Friday to Sunday, students worked in an intensive environment under the direction of three of Australia’s finest conductors, all culminating in a grand finale concert on the Sunday.

David Law instructed the wind ensemble, Raquel Bastos the strings and Kate Albury directed the vocal ensemble.

Students use what they have learned at this program to take back to their respective schools where they help to boost the quality and learning of the departments.

McGill always looks forward to the event and the songs and knowledge that the students return with.

“I’m always very excited for this program every year and it’s great that the students don’t have to travel far and can perform locally,” she said.

“They return with great knowledge and enthusiasm and help to improve the whole level of the department.”

Malanda State High School had seven students selected to participate in the program; four singers, two Clarinet players and one Euphonium player.

Atherton State High School

also had seven students selected to participate in SHEP; three Clarinet players, two Flute players, one Tenor Saxophone player and a Violin player.

Central Tablelands Cluster Instrumental Music Teacher Lachlan Szery spoke highly about the program and the benefits it gives the students.

“It’s a really good program, ASHS is fairly involved as we have kids go every year,” he said.

“Anything external I try to encourage the kids to participate in as much as I can, it really helps them improve.”

New wind Farm in the works TABLELANDS residents are being given their chance to find out more and have their say on a proposed new wind farm for Far North Queensland.

RATCH Australia is investigating the potential of land 13km north of Ravenshoe to host a wind farm comprising 18 turbines.

Tablelands Regional Council originally granted development approval for the High Road Wind Farm in 2011 but the project was not built, the High Road project is located off Tumoulin Road, Evelyn.

According to RATCH Australia, “Wind turbine technology has advanced since then and we are now considering applying to the Queensland Government for permission to build turbines measuring up to 150m to the tip of the blades.”

“There would also be opportunities for local businesses to win valuable contracts and for local people to secure jobs.

Dangerous operation of a motor vehicle, Dimbulah Police have charged a local man after a traffic crash in Dimbulah on Friday evening February 28.

It’s alleged that at about 6.15pm, the man was travelling at an excessive speed on Kennedy Street before turning into Argyle Street where he has lost control of the vehicle causing it to roll into a drain coming to rest on its roof.

It will also be alleged that when police arrived, the driver returned a reading of 0.233 per cent BAC. Police will also allege that when being processed through the watch house, a small quantity of drugs was found in his shorts pocket.

A 31-year-old Dimbulah man was issued with an immediate driver suspension, had his vehicles registration plates seized for seven days and was charged

High-risk activities, Mareeba Police have charged a 13-year-old boy after Police and QAS were called to an incident on Byrnes Street on Saturday evening.

It’s alleged that the boy was on the roof of a building at about 9.30pm with a group of other juveniles playing a game of tag when one of the children slipped off the roof causing a sprain and abrasions.

The boy has been charged with unregulated high-risk activities, stealing and wilful damage and will be dealt with according to the provisions of the Youth Justice Act 1992.

The other juveniles are assisting police with their investigations.

Drink driving, Ravenshoe Police have charged a local man after a traffic intercept in Ravenshoe on Saturday evening February 29.

It’s alleged that the man was intercepted on Grigg Street at about 8.30pm when he returned a reading of 0.111 per cent BAC. A 33-year-old Ravenshoe man was issued with an immediate driver suspension and was charged with drink driving. He is expected to appear in Atherton Magistrates Court on March 17.

The Desert Rose nicknamed Rosie is a million dollar unit that provides access to the latest breast cancer screening digital technology.

The Desert Rose will join the other breast screening mobile service unit; the Orchid already

in use and will help to cover the 45 locations across the far north.

With access to the latest in digital technology, Desert Rose allows quick turnaround of breast screen images from remote locations allowing clinicians to review them and deliver timely results.

The new vehicle is set to visit up to 20 sites in the Cairns and Cassowary Coast region, with two radiographers able to screen

at the same time.

With more than 5,000 women being screened through the mobile service each year, the addition of this truck will bolster those numbers and better able women to receive these services they otherwise would not.

Member for Cook Cynthia Lui says that this kind of service is important to people in remote areas and allows them to better look after their health.

“This sort of service is excellent for the region and it allows women to be more proactive in the discovery and prevention of breast cancer,” she said.

“I think prevention is the key and to have a service like this readily available is a huge achievement.”

The BreastScreen Mobile Service will be in Mareeba until March 24.

Off the mark

The “opinion” by Phil Brandel in last week’s edition of The Express was a little off the mark with his assessment of Mareeba Shire voters. Undoubtably, some voters simply don’t have a clue and those of us who have spent many elections handing out how to vote cards can verify that. However, the vast majority of voters do know what they are doing, know who they are voting for and why.

Yes, Councils’ core business of water, sewerage, rubbish and roads might be a bit of a yawn to some, but it is those four utilities that separate us from third world countries and if not maintained and replaced, limits our growth and endangers our health and safety. History shows Mareeba Shire voters have scant regard for big ideas, big spending candidates as so many of our residents live on fixed incomes and call a spade a spade. Oh, and by the way, every local government

survey taken in Mareeba Shire has roads as top priority, and financial responsibility as second.

Cost of rates unsustainable

Congratulations to Granville Spencer for his letter (Wednesday, March 4, 2020), holding the current council to account on the excessive rate charges.

He pointed out wonderfully well the enormous amounts of money spent on the council itself such as refurbishments, vehicle fleet, and obscene salaries of top management while essential services have suffered badly.

Frontline staff such as road maintenance crews etc., have been reduced over the last few years. I am sure were the TRC to advertise the CEO’s position for half the current salary that is being paid they would still get a huge number of high achieving

And my favourite “boycott big M” What most outraged people didn’t realise (although they would have if they read the article) is that Dairy Farmers hasn’t been owned by an Australian company since 2008.

Good luck trying to stop that.

For some of the present councillors to express that if reelected, they want to focus on affordable rates, good value for money and trustworthy transactions, is a sick joke when one looks at their woeful record.

Having obtained info on some 150 + councils around Australia on the web over the past few months, I have found that the TRC rates are amongst the highest of any regional council in Australia. and clearly unsustainable. The first thing the next council needs to do is to sharpen their pencils and introduce a hefty rate reduction.

MSC failed Kuranda

I want to comment on the article written by Tom Gilmore in The Express on 19/2/20.

He launched a scathing attack on the Minister for State Development, Manufacturing and Industry, Cameron Dick, complaining about temporary restriction put on the Mareeba Shire Council.

Do you think these restrictions would have been done lightly? Maybe it was obvious that MSC wasn’t following procedures correctly.

A prime example would be

the handling of the Kur World project in Kuranda. Mr Gilmore states in his rant that the community is fully behind the development, what a load of rubbish.

This shows how out of touch this man is. Kuranda is a special place; it verges on World Heritage Areas and National Parks and also a wildlife corridor for some of our most protected species.

This could all come under threat by development in the wrong places.

This brings me to another matter. The one legacy, Mr Gilmore could have done while in office, was give Kuranda local representation.

Kuranda is a unique town with its own complex issues, totally different to the Tablelands.

We need someone local who knows how to address these issues.

This to me is a huge failure on Tom Gilmore’s part and a lack of respect for Kuranda

I feel Rod Marti is right on the money with his assessment of the current TRC about who is running the council.

Unfortunately it seems it is the extremely well paid beaucrats not unlike the oh so truthful British comedy “yes minister “ that is running the council Candidate for Division 5 Peter Hodge has been making similar comments and raising his concerns about who is controlling the council.

On the deputy mayor’s comments she seems to be taking the road of blaming previous councils for their shortcomings. Does she need to be reminded they had four years to fix these issues.

EXPRESS SPORT PORT Yungaburra Triathlon makes sixth appearance

Gators and MOPS bring the game to Dimbulah THE Mareeba Gladiators and MOPS (Mareeba Old Players and Supporters) visited Dimbulah on Saturday, February 29 for a meet and greet BBQ and a training session.

Held at the Dimbulah Soccer

Club, the purpose of the training session was to help promote junior sport within the Dimbulah community.

Community members also got too meet and talk to the players after the training session.

The Mareeba Gladiators faced off against Brothers last weekend for a trial match and will face the Atherton Roosters at Roosters Stadium this Saturday. For more info visit the Mareeba Gladiators on Facebook.

The Yungaburra Triathlon will once again grace the roads and shores of Tinaroo dam and the surrounding areas on April 5 this year.

THE sixth annual Yungaburra Triathlon is once again going to grace the roads and waterways of the Tinaburra Peninsula.

The triathlon, to be held on Sunday April 5, will be open for registrations until March 15.

Last year, the Yungaburra Triathlon attracted almost 600 participants to the event as well as over 1000 enthusiastic spectators.

Tablelands Regional Council Mayor, Joe Paronella describes the triathlon as an “exciting time of the year” “It’s an exciting time of the year for Yungaburra and for the Tablelands,” he said.

“We always look forward to the festival style atmosphere on the triathlon.

“The races are held on the Tinaburra Peninsula and we’re keeping road closures to a minimum.”

Saturday will see the race check-in with course and transition familiarisation while Sunday will have the sprint, standard, enticer and junior events as well as a Mates4Mates relay.

Road closures are expected on Sunday at 6:30am to 11:30am and 2:30pm to 3:30pm, while the boat ramp at Yungaburra will be closed from 6am to 4pm.

Organising Committee member, Councillor Samantha Banks is encouraging locals to come down and support the annual event.

“There was an electric atmosphere here last year with the

number of people out,” she said.

“Our chosen charity this year is Mates4Mates and 10% of all registration fees are being donated.

“There’s great prize money for competitors and food and drinks will be available to keep spectators on their feet.”

Volunteers are also being sought to help with race checkin, set-up, marshalling and in the recovery tent and registrations.

Health and wellbeing program in Mareeba MAREEBA PCYC’s Health and Wellbeing program is about to recommence and is free for anyone over the age of 18.

Health and Wellbeing is an exercise and nutrition/ education program that aims to inform people about the proper procedures when it comes to healthy living.

The program is available for adults over the age of 18, who are receiving support from either their general practitioner for mental and physical health, a clinician in a public or a private health service or a community organisation that specialises in mental and/or physical health conditions.

available that are two hours in duration, one hour for education and one hour for exercise.

All activities are delivered by certified health professionals: exercise physiologists and dietitians.

Program Co-ordinator Paul Spooner is excited for the program to be back and is encouraging eligible people to give it a go.

“If you’re on the fence about participating, it’s ok to come down and have a look around,” he said.

“Instead of saying ‘it’s not for me’ come down and familiarise yourself with the staff and the facilities.

“We go through an indi-

vidual analysis which leads to a personalised program, eventually leading into the group sessions.”

The PCYC Health and Wellbeing program has two sessions that run from 10am to 12pm and 11am to 1pm on Fridays.

ATHERTON had mixed results in the Cricket Far North T20 double header at Atherton’s Loder Park on Saturday with both games going down to the wire. Recent form didn't count for much as batsmen struggled to adjust to T20 format.

(Game 1) Barron won the toss and elected to bat first posting 94 with 6 wickets down.

Dan Parnell and Mitch Steele opened the bowling with tidy spells, rewarded with a wicket for Parnell. Barron's batsmen dug in and were ticking away at 5 an over with 1 wicket down before Chris Adams was thrown the ball. The medium pacer repaid his Captain's faith taking 3 wickets for 2 runs in his first over to put pressure on Barron's middle order. Ever reliable Tom Boorman worked hard for a wicket, and keeper Fred Pittorino took the sixth wicket with a run-out.

Blaney took their team to 54 at the half-way mark leaving the target in easy reach at a required four runs and over. Atherton made hard work of the chase losing key wickets cheaply and fell 6 runs short, bowled out with 2 balls remaining.

(Game 2) Atherton faced off against Rovers in the second match, and were sent out to field first by the 2-day and 1-day runners-up. Class all-rounder Brenton Edwards looked set for revenge, smacking 44 runs off 28 balls and putting Rovers in a great position 3-70 off 10 overs, before Tom Boorman had him caught on the boundary. Atherton worked hard in the field and in a great team bowling effort restricted Rovers to 24 runs off the final 10 overs. Regular wicket-keeper Fred Pittorino enjoyed his day in the field taking 3 catches and effecting a run-out while Ken Webb was tidy with the gloves.

event and has legendary feats of strength performed every year.

Jack will be going up against

the best of the best on Saturday March 21 in Melbourne, for the squat, bench and deadlift event – the Pro Raw Powerlifting Competition.

Being one of the youngest competitors for his 110kg weight division, Jack knows that he has a long way to go before he’s at his strongest.

“I’m going down there knowing I’m not going to win, but for me it’s all about the experience,” he said.

“You get your strongest between 35 and 40 so I’ve got some time.

“After this event I’m going to take a step back and focus on my studies.”

The aspiring teacher currently lives in Cairns where he is studying a Master’s degree, and aims to become a HPE and Biology teacher.

Jacks love for fitness is what drives him to become a HPE teacher and he aims to educate kids on the value of exercise and the positive health benefits that can follow.

“I have always had a great support circle around me, including his parents which once banned me from going to the gym,” he said.

“I then took it upon myself to weld together equipment with rods, tyres and anything else I could find to make some makeshift gym equipment.”

Jack lifted a total of 820kg to qualify for Pro Raw at a lifting competition on the Sunshine Coast that he entered on a whim, an impressive feat as Jack only started training specifically for powerlifting in June of 2019.

He will be competing against the best power lifter in the world; Kirill Igorevich Sarychev, a Russian powerlifter who can raw bench press 335kg.

Going up against such a renowned and skilled opponent certainly has its effects; however Jack is viewing this as an experience and is hoping to learn all he can from the best in the world.

Jack started his journey at Essential Fitness in Mareeba when he was still in school, an overweight 16 year old kid who had decided to start looking after himself and working out.

“I really suffered with body image problems, I was an overweight kid,” he said.

“People have a lot of selfconfidence issues when coming to gym with people looking at them.

“But at the end of the day if someone is judging you at the gym for trying to improve yourself, they aren’t worth your energy.

“Just because your stronger, doesn’t make you a better person.”

Mareeba teams dominate Far North pitches Mareeba cricket had another dominating weekend with both the seconds and thirds teams winning their games.

Mareeba seconds played a 20/20 double header against Port Douglas and United at the Port Douglas Sports Complex, winning both games.

Mareeba went up against the Douglas Muddies first thing in the morning; Douglas won the toss and decided to get ahead early putting themselves in to bat.

The Mareeba bowling line-up did well and held Douglas to a chase able 111 after 20 overs.

Opening batsman Trevor Roys set about his job quickly scoring a half century off 56 balls and setting his team up in a good position to seal the rest of the game.

Some middle-lower order batting collapses had Mareeba sweating but they got over the line at 8/112 in the last over.

United were Mareeba’s next opponents later in the

day and in a low scoring game, Mareeba got over the line again to claim their second victory.

After having two games played on the pitch before the second Mareeba game, the pitch wasn’t in the best condition and proved difficult for batters on both sides.

United won the toss and sent Mareeba in on a crumbling pitch looking to get some quick wickets.

The pitch did most of the work for the bowlers and Mareeba folded to 84 after 20 overs.

The Mareeba bowlers quickly went to work chewing through the United batting order, getting them all out for 53 runs in the 17th over.

Mareeba Thirds dominated their Barron counterpart on Saturday at Borzi Park nearly tripling their score.

Mareeba won the toss and decided to bat first on a flat deck with minimal cloud cover and took full advantage.

An opening run partnership with Vernon Jansen and Ray Watkins put Mareeba 100 runs ahead before drinks and before the fall of a wicket.

Mareeba looked in top form with Vernon deciding to get his team some runs smashing an unbeaten 134 runs off 104 balls with 14 4’s and 5 6’s.

Mareeba ended on 7/248 off 35 after an impressive batting performance, the deck however was a road and the game wasn’t won yet.

With the threat of rain looming Mareeba set out to chew through the Barron batting line-up and pave the way for a win.

The Mareeba bowlers came out and did just that, chewing through Barron with Zac McBurnie proving to be the bane of the Barron lineup taking 5/9 off 7 overs and pushing his side to a win, Barron ended all out on 99 runs.

New era for football in North QLD

FOOTBALL Queensland (FQ) has confirmed the merger of Football Queensland Far North (FNQ) and Football Queensland North (NQ) following a visit from the FQ CEO and Board of Directors to both regions last week.

And to the delight of clubs in the region, born and bred North Queenslander Alex Srhoj will continue on to administer the game locally.

In a transformative day for football in the region, FQ met with Far North clubs to talk through the current governance structure of football in the region.

Discussions stemmed from a unique change contained in the Far North Queensland Constitution made in 2017 which resulted in FNQ clubs not being afforded membership of the zone and consequently were not empowered with a say on the future direction of the game.

Following an extensive governance review and consultation with clubs in both the Far North and North Queensland regions, a decision was made to merge the two zones by extending the boundaries of the North Queensland Football zone to immediately include clubs throughout Far North as members.

FQ Chairman Ben Richardson said the decision will bring immediate and significant benefits to clubs in the region.

“This outcome will vastly improve transparency and visibility for clubs from the Far North who now have a voice on how football is run in Northern Queensland,” Richardson said.

“The two zones combined will benefit from FQ’s shared service support which will include group finance resources, marketing, improved technology and better access to club development and referee and coaching programs.”

FQ CEO Robert Cavallucci said the merger will ensure local service delivery for Far North clubs whilst benefiting from the newly positioned services and resources from Football Queensland.

“Alex Srhoj has been appointed on a two-year contract and will continue to administer the game locally in Cairns,” Cavallucci said.

“The North Queensland team has a successful track record in governance and administration which has brought strength and stability to the region led by Chairman John Azpiri, who will oversee the independent board for the newly defined Football Queensland North zone.”

THREE tries to debutante winger Gideon Larry highlighted in the Atherton Roosters 44-10 win over the Mount Isa Miners at Atherton’s Mungalli Creek Dairy Stadium on Saturday night.

Larry was one of several young guns to impress in the Roosters first 2020 hit out which was the start of three weeks of pre-season trials for the club.

Mount Isa opened the scoring with an early try, but the Roosters reply was quick and they took a handy 22-6 lead to the halftime break. From here, the Roosters powered out to a 44-6 lead before Mount Isa scored again in the closing minutes.

Seasoned Rooster Nigel Woodleigh was another standout with two tries included in his performance. Other youngsters to enjoy match time on Saturday for the Roosters were Ben Whybird, Justin Bevan, Darcy Gillespie, Brad Hammond and Keifhar Rosas.

It was a great way to open season 102 for the Roosters who also claimed the KAP Cup in their victory. The KAP cup will now be an annual pre-season first grade match up between the Roosters and the Miners.
