Boys from the Bush are back in town A MAREEBA team of high school students have taken out the 2016 Great Wheelbarrow Race. ‘Boys from the Bush’ won the mens category and were awarded overall race champions finishing the three day race in a time of six-hours and 35 minutes. Race chair Councillor Nipper Brown said the event was another great success. “I believe it went really well overall and once again we have managed to raise significant amounts for charities,” he said. “The support from the general public was unbelievable again and the small town reception was great as always.” “The teams showed what human spirit is. The camaraderie, the courtesy they showed to each other and the support they gave to one another all along the race was unbelievable. TURN TO PAGES 5 & 15 FOR MORE ON THE 2016 GREAT WHEELBARROW RACE.

By Michael Serenc A FED-UP Mareeba hardware store manager will consider putting on security patrols to stop shoplifters stealing thousands of dollars worth of goods every month. TGT general manager Sheldon Mulla (pictured) said he was at his wit’s end in trying to deal with thefts at the company’s Home Timber and Hardware store, despite spending more than $100,000 on 40
security cameras. “We don’t know where else to turn now...I need to provide a deterrent somehow,” he said. “Cameras and other security measures don’t seem to be working effectively.” Tools, drills, spanner sets and gardening equipment are just some of the items targeted by thieves, who can make a quick “grab and dash” for the goods or hide them inside their clothing. Mareeba Post office reunion Just over 100 people made the journey back to Mareeba to celebrate having worked in the Mareeba Post Office recently. The event, which was organised by Lorraine Michel who worked at the exchange for 13 years and at the time of cutover was a monitor in charge of the telephone exchange staff of approximately 24 women and four night boys. Former postal workers, telephonists, technicians, telegraphists and linesman gathered at the Mareeba Bowls Club for an evening meal and catch up. Some had not seen each other since the time Mareeba’s telephone exchange went automatic back in 1975. The oldest surviving visitor was Mr Harold Gibbons, 96, who made the journey up the range from his now Cairns home. Mr Gibbons cut the cake with the help of organiser, Lorraine Michael (Gert) who had started work in Mareeba in 1962. Mr Gibbons, as everyone had to call him back in the day, arrived in Mareeba around 1958 and was in charge of the technicians. He took all his newbies under his wing when they arrived in Mareeba often straight out of training. One worker fondly recalled on his arrival in Mareeba being told “not to go joining
any bikie gangs or the like”. Mr Gibbons ran a tight ship. There was some great memorabilia on display - an old pyramid telephone exchange similar to the one at Petford, old phones and the headsets the telephonists wore along with linesman memorabilia used out in the field. People also brought along some historic photos as well. Guests travelled from as far afield as Brisbane, the Gold Coast and the Sunshine Coast to spend time with their old co-workers. Construction technicians also attended, who were charged with installing the automatic equipment and performing the cutover. They went on to Mossman after Mareeba. Some of the exchange girls were transferred to Atherton after cutover. The old building the postal workers and telephonists worked in is no longer standing but there was some information found on when it was built and the telephone exchange installed which was on display. The night was deemed a success and a few people met for breakfast the next morning before going their separate ways. The last big reunion had been held on April Fool’s Day 1999 which was a date decided on Gert and Mr Gibbons cut the cake. (Photo Ann Kirby) way back in 1975 on cutover day.
Cockatoos have residents in a flap TABLELANDS Regional Council has declared war on a pesky feathered friend. Flocks of Sulphur-crested cockatoos have been wreaking destruction atop the Tolga rainforest canopy and are now making their way into residential areas of Atherton. Council will look into a cockatoo damage mitigation permit with the Department of Natural Resources and Mines after the issue was raised by Division 5 councillor Katrina Spies at last Wednesday’s meeting. Cr Spies said residents had been complaining about the cockatoos for the past couple of weeks and something needed to be done. “They’re very noisy, they’re damaging vegetation,” she said. “They leave a big mess.” But Cr Spies conceded even if council was able to move the critically endangered birds on from area to area and minimise their impact, residents may still have to live with them. “It’s more complicated than it looks. People have a right to live in peace but the cockatoos also have a right to be around so you have to look at the balance,” she said. “I don’t want to be seen as someone who just wants to get the gun out.” TRC mayor Joe Paronella said the cockatoos were

obviously being attracted to the township area by food. “As far as council is concerned, we can only move them on and you must get permits to enable that to happen,” he said. “We will do what we can to move them on out of the town area because they are definitely a nuisance to residents.
“We know there are both private and commercial orchids that are certainly devastated by the cockatoos being there.” Cr Paronella said noise or non-lethal ammunition known as “Bird Frite” would be the only options likely available to council.

Hardware stores take stand against shoplifters FROM P1 “Some go into denial when they’re caught. They go “It was an accident, I didn’t mean it”. They may blame the staff member,” Mr Mulla said. “Our objective is to press charges wherever possible, but as I understand it the situation needs to be serious enough to warrant pressing charges and the police advise us on whether it’s worthwhile or not.” Shoplifting is a civil offence under the Queensland Regulatory Offences Act 1985, and applies to a person who consumes, alters or steals goods worth $150 or less from a store. The maximum penalty is a fine of “six penalty units”, with each unit worth $117.80. By contrast, “stealing” is a crime under the state’s Criminal Code Act 1899 and covers anything stolen over the value of $150. It carries a maximum penalty of five years imprisonment for the offender, depending on what a magistrate decides.
Mr Mulla said the response from local police had been disappointing, and claimed on some occasions they did not turn up at all when called about a theft. “Once we’ve given them the information, with or without footage, they’re either too busy or don’t respond,” he said. “Some of the instances they will respond to but I’m not sure why it’s just not consistent across the board.” But Mareeba Police officer-in-charge SeniorSergeant Derek Garner said he was unaware of any cases where police had not attended calls for service. “The police will attend at the earliest possible opportunity in each instance,” he said.“Certainly if any store owners have any concerns, they should contact Mareeba police station.” Sen-Sgt Garner said the punishments for shoplifting were left up to the discretion of the responding police officer, who may let the offender off with a warning, give them a fine or
and pensioners. “I’ve caught a bloke who was in his 70s with stuff down his pants...It was an $80 set of secateurs,” Mr Brcko said. “We had a gentleman literally stuffing his backpack with tools. He was observed by a staff member and questioned, then he bolted to the door and took off,” added Mr Mulla. Tableland Hardware Mareeba supervisor Carlie Lawrance said while opportunistic thefts were less of a problem at her store, there were still some cunning tricks thieves used. “It’s things like someone might buy 20 lengths of copper wire and they’ll load it up themselves and give themselves a couple of lengths extra,” she said. Mr Mulla called for tougher penalties to deter those caught shoplifting. “If it’s not a deterrent for them and they’re continuing to undertake these criminal activities, then the punishment is too soft,” he said.
press ahead with criminal charges. “It all depends on what has happened and the age of the person in particular,” he said. “If they do have a history of offending, they can be brought before the court but that’s a last resort.” According to police statistics, there have been only three reported cases of shoplifting in Mareeba since April 1. Sunshine Mitre 10 manager Donny Brcko said shoplifting was a “constant problem” for his store, estimating he dealt with about half-a-dozen thefts every week. “You can only put a shop under so much surveillance but we’re always finding empty packets floating around the place,” he said. “If we catch them, they’re more than happy to pay for it but we can give them a warning that if they continue to shoplift, we don’t want them to come back.” Both Mr Mulla and Mr Brcko said there was no one specific age or group shoplifting, ranging from children right through to mums with prams

Canavan hints at funding for Highway By Michael Serenc NORTHERN Australia minister Matt Canavan has stopped painfully short of guaranteeing Federal funding for the Hann Highway. In Mareeba last week to support the LNP’s candidate for Kennedy, Jonathan Pavetto, Senator Canavan hinted strongly the highway would be funded under the government’s $600 million Northern Australia
Roads Program (NARP). “From my perspective, it’s a no brainer to seal-the final 100km so we can have an inland road from Cairns to Melbourne,” he said. “Personally I support it, but I don’t have the chequebook. We’re hopeful very shortly to make announcements on the roads we will fund.” Lobby group Advance Cairns estimates the cost of sealing the Hann would be about

$120 million. “I know from many visits up here how important this road is to the region,” he said. “But more importantly, it’s not just a local project, it’s a project for the whole country, because we’ll create this inland highway from Cairns to Melbourne, it’ll take eightand-a-half hours off the journey and it means we’re going to have a flood-proof connection from the south to the north.”

Mareeba whiz kid kicking goals
Bright future: National Youth Science Forum participant Rebecca Hermanus.
A PASSIONATE teacher in the tiny town of Nhulunbuy is all it took to ignite Rebecca Hermanus’ love of science. The St Stephen’s Catholic College captain, who moved to Mareeba at the start of last year, is kicking some serious goals as she prepares for university. Rebecca, 16, impressed organisers of this year’s National Youth Science Forum (NYSF) so much they invited her back to be a group staff member at next year’s event in Canberra. “There’s 400 students from across Australia who go to the NYSF every year, so to have this honour, I was speechless,” she said. “The “staffies” bring so much life, so much passion to it and they’re literally just kids who’ve come out of high school the year before. Obviously there’s a lot of science, but the reason
the NYSF is so special is they have a lot of focus on developing us as individuals, so things like public speaking, debate forums and conversations with leading scientists.” Rebecca, who also attended the NYSF’s Next Step science program in Brisbane earlier this year, said she had hopes of studying medicine at University of Queensland. The teen was full of praise for her school and Mareeba Rotary Club. “Mareeba Rotary gave me both financial and emotional support,” she said. “I’m just proud to represent the school in these things and proud to represent Mareeba.” Applications for the 2017 NYSF close on May 31. Hand feed a barra at Karumba If you hook a barramundi at Lake Belmore in the Gulf Savannah, the chances are that it started life in Karumba at the Barramundi Discovery Centre. The Carpentaria Shire Council hatchery supplies barramundi fingerlings for a number of Gulf waterways, including the Albert River in Burketown and the Norman River in Karumba, which are popular with anglers wanting to hook the feisty fish. Centre coordinator Chris McDonald said the addition of the young barramundi into the river systems helped boost stock, especially in poor seasons, and was essential for freshwater water bodies like Lake Belmore near Croydon, which would be devoid of barramundi otherwise. “We had a record spawn last year of 125,000 fingerlings and 70,000 of those went into the Norman River alone so in about three years’ time when they are legal size people will be reeling them in,” he said. During the Gulf Savannah’s peak season between April and early October, the

hatchery opens its doors to visitors wanting to learn more about the Gulf’s most famous fish and hand feed some of the larger ones. “Visitors get a kick out of watching our breeding stock snap at the squid and pilchards thrown to them, especially when they see the larger barra, which are well over one metre in length,” said. “We promote sustainability to the people who come to the hatchery by talking to them about catch and release practices and good handling methods.” Of course the most important question Chris always get is where is the best spot to catch a barramundi during the open season from February to the start of October in the Gulf. “At Lake Belmore you will most likely catch one of the barramundi that were bred at the hatchery with a surface lure at night in the shallows.” The Barramundi Discovery Centre is open from April to early October. Wheelbarrow race delights thousands FROM quirky costumes to blockbuster rivalries, there wasn’t much stopping Mareeba from putting on one hell of a show for the Great Wheelbarrow Race. The atmosphere was electric as hundreds of competitors and their support crew assembled at Davies Park on Friday morning before rolling down Byrnes Street with their trusty wheelbarrows to the cheers of thousands. Amongst the more eccentric teams were the “Duck Hunters”, raising money for the SES and hot on the heels of their rivals, “Ducks on Bikes”. “We’re dressed up as hound dogs and without them realising, we’re actually hunting the Ducks on Bikes,” quipped Duck Hunters team member and SES volunteer Meradine Hohepa. “We do sabotage each other’s vehicles and we have the faces of the opposing team on our van as ducks.” Ms Hohepa praised the atmosphere of the race. “There’s lots of mateship, camaraderie and lot’s of competition amongst the SES
teams,” she said. ‘The race is amazing because you’ve got young teenagers to 75-year-olds involved. “It’s really about perseverance.” Out on Byrnes St, visiting Croydon couple Glen and Lorna Sheppard were amazed as they watched the competitors roll down the street with their grandson, Rhys Dempsey, 6. “We’re very impressed... It’s a bit more than what we expected,” Mrs Sheppard said. “The amount of people here is unreal.” Mrs Sheppard said the race would even be worth replicating in Croydon, in a bid to lift the drought-stricken town’s spirits. “They should do something like this, even if it was from Croydon to Normanton or Croydon to Georgetown,” she said. Great Wheelbarrow Race organising committee chairman Nipper Brown said the event had failed to disappoint. “It always astounds me seeing the costumes and all the people involved,” he said. “You wouldn’t know that

Competitors were then on the road again to Chillagoe the next day, completing a whopping 140km journey all the name of charity, fun and a bloody good time.

TAFE students get their hands dirty MAREEBA TAFE students have literally dug in to their studies after building a bridge in Cairns. 16 students completed the structure at TAFE’s Cairns campus last week as part of their studies for a Certificate II in Resources and Infrastructure Work Preparation. The students, who are part of TAFE’s Back to Study program, attend classes three days a week in Cairns and are driven to and from home by bus. “The program is designed to help people improve their employment opportunities or change careers,” said TAFE Queensland North General Manager Joann Pyne.“These Mareeba students come to us from jobactive provider, QITE so we are taking Back to Study enrolments now from individuals and groups. “The students are receiving great guidance from Teacher, Paul Buckley who is a Queensland Training Award winner.”Mr Buckley said he was impressed with how far the students had progressed.
“They have really settled into their new routine and are learning some valuable time management skills,” he said. “This course simulates real life work sites, so the students are enjoying the hands-on training and are well on their way to being job ready.“It is great seeing them gain confidence when they tackle a new challenge and realise that they are capable of mastering new skills.”TAFE student Jedidiah Bigie said he enjoyed his time on campus. “I enjoy learning how to drive the excavator and I also really like the scaffolding training,” he said.“I feel as though I am learning a lot from Paul, he’s a great teacher and I am sure this qualification will help me find work,” Mr Bigie said. There will be more than $600,000 available in Back to Study funding this financial year. For more information, head to tafenorth.edu.au or call 1300 656 959.

Councils edgy over funding By Michael Serenc TABLELAND mayors are bracing for the worst if the Federal Government follows through on its plan to delay reimbursing the State Government more than $1 billion in disaster funding. The Federal Budget has pushed back reimbursing Queensland $1.2 billion in funding spent under the Natural Disaster Relief and Recovery Arrangements (NDRRA) program for another 12 months. The shortfall has Mareeba Shire mayor Tom Gilmore worried that council may have to help the State shoulder the financial burden if another natural disaster were to strike the region. “If that scenario was to become reality, it would be an absolute disgrace and a shambles,” he said.“I don’t believe that will ever arise, in that the Federal and the State governments are providers of last resort. They know that small communities cannot withstand multi-billion dollars worth of damage to our roads and infrastructure. “It appears to me that we’re seeing a little bit of budget trickery at a Federal level, which is unfortunate.” Under the current NDRRA, the Commonwealth absorbs 75 per cent of disaster relief and recovery payments, with State paying the remaining 25 per cent. “I take the personal view that in the event of a disas-
ter, the Commonwealth will find the money out of the reserves, the deficit or somewhere else,” Cr Gilmore said. “If they were not to do that, it would be a total denial of previous positions and it would be a complete reversal of previous policy decisions that have been made by Federal and State governments for many years.” Tableland Regional Council acting general manager of infrastructure services, Ashley Greenwood, said the funding arrangements may put in jeopardy several projects green-lit by the Queensland Reconstruction Authority (QRA), which oversees NDRAA funding in the state.“Council, only as of last Thursday, approved the contracts related to that,” he said. “We incur the costs and then seek to recover those from the QRA, so if there’s a lack of payment from the Federal to the State governments, that would create a problem for us.“Essentially it would be local government carrying the burden.” TRC Mayor Joe Paronella agreed the Federal Government’s funding position was concerning. “It definitely will have a flow-on effect and we would have to certainly look at what works we’re going to carry out at the moment if there’s a chance of not being reimbursed,” he said.

Since we started Wylandra Estate in 1996, land prices have increased 3-fold When I was buying my first property, my father advised me to “buy something you can add value to”. What he meant was, if you buy property where you can add to its value (for example by building a shed, fencing or landscaping gardens or planting fruit trees) you can increase your chances of making a healthy profit when you sell it. With our pre-sale bargains* we can help you add to the value of your property.
Locals to celebrate pool anniversary

A MAREEBA icon will be celebrated next weekend when locals gather to mark 50 years since the opening of the town’s swimming pool. The pool, which has taught generations of residents how to swim, has also produced its fair share of champions at a regional and state level. Mareeba grandmother Toni Wallbridge said her late husband Curtis would have been chuffed to see the pool continue to be so popular, long after his success there as a teenager in the late 1960s and ‘70s. “He became a star here in Mareeba and then moved away and trained with (Australian swimming coaches) Laurie Lawrence and Ken Wood for a long time,“ she said. “He went to try out for Australia, missed out by onehundredth of a second, and after that he lost all interest.”

Mikki Wallbridge with Phillip Srhoj holing up the Srhoj Shield.
Mrs Wallbridge said her husband broke several records at the Mareeba pool, with all three of her daughters also taking to the water. One of them, Heidi, went on to compete in state titles and won the pool’s coveted Micheli Borzi Shield, achieving the same feat as her father did many years before “They are the only two with the same father and daughter family name on the shield,” Mrs Wallbridge said. “Six months before he passed away, he could still beat the girls in the pool. They would always say, “Come on, Dad, I’ll challenge you”. He could beat them over 50m, but when it came to 100m, the girls got him. “He still had it right to the end.” Residents are invited to celebrate the pool’s 50th anniversary on May 29 from 10am, with a host of activities planned.

Did you know? In 1942 the US Army Air Force (USAAF) built an airfield in Mareeba which had two runways (Hoevet Field). The two runways (one of which is still in use and is now known as the Mareeba Airport) were connected by a complement of taxiways. Those taxiways connecting the runways ran throughout Wylandra Estate. The RAAF flew Bristol Beauforts from Hoevet Field and the USAAF hid bombardment groups of B17s and fighter squadrons of P38s under the eucalypt trees of Wylandra Estate. When the RAAF and USAAF were called upon to fight they would run out along the taxiways to one of the two runaways and would fly off to do battle with the Japanese.

portant teacher,” said Mareeba Library branch supervisor Wendy Rutherford. “The way we do that is through our programs, so we have “Rhyme Time” on a Friday morning, “Story Time” on a Wednesday morning and we provide free resources for families to access.” Australian Early Development Census data taken from 2012 showed 26.2 per cent of Queensland children are developmentally vulnerable or at risk on one or more developmental domains –
including language and cognitive skills. The four-year, $20 million program is active across Queensland libraries since it was first announced by the State Government in September 2014. Parents with children under five-years-old are invited to the launch of the program’s “LearningGames” kit at Mareeba library tomorrow from 5pm as part of National Families Week. Library staff will put on a sausage sizzle, host arts and craft activities and read a bedtime story.

When the ladies heard of the 3000 homeless returned soldiers they decided to make some sturdy rugs to bring a little comfort to these Aussie heroes. The rugs need to be strong and serviceable, not pretty. Homeless people live a dangerous life, and they do not need something that will attract attention to themselves. Slow progress for Herberton water upgrade HERBERTON residents may still have to wait another two years before they can finally have a decent water supply. Tablelands Regional Council voted unanimously last Wednesday to approve an expression of interest for State Government funding for the proposed $2.9 million Herberton Water Supply Scheme Upgrade (HWSSU). If council’s application is successful through the Building our Regions (BoR) Infrastructure Fund, the State would find 50 per cent of the HWSSU, easing the burden on ratepayers having to shell out the full amount. But council’s acting general manager of infrastructure services, Ashley Greenwood, admitted
funding would likely become available between the 2017/18 and 2018/19 financial years. “The reality is...if we are successful, and undertake the actual design work required, resolve any land tenure issues, it’s going to be a period of time,” he said. “Certainly there’s an increased push within council, particularly with water and waste, and as such we’re looking closely at what our priority projects are.” Mr Greenwood said the HWSS was one of council’s top three water quality and capacity issues which needed be addressed. The unfiltered HWSS has been a continual problem for council, highlighted by a 2007 en-
gineering report which identified several issues. That included the scheme’s six reservoirs and main trunk (pipe) not being large enough to deliver water at a sufficient rate of flow, frequent leaks of the pump, pipe and water network and differing water pressure levels which led to inconsistent amounts of chlorine being used for decontamination. The HWSSU would also provide a decent fire-fighting capability for Herberton with the installation of a 3.4 megalitre reservoir worth $1.8 million. TRC Division 1 councillor Kate Eden welcomed the proposed upgrade and said it was crucial residents had a stable water supply. “We moved to Herberton in 1973 and...it was
kind of a frontier town back then. We didn’t expect to have services,” she said. “But as the population’s slowly grown, the water infrastructure hasn’t kept up-to-speed with it in terms of having sufficient reservoirs. “The worst thing that could go wrong is if you couldn’t feed water up to the reservoirs and there were fires...It’s quite a dry area.” Council has until May 27 to submit its expression of interest to the Department of State Development before finding out if they have made the BoR shortlist in June. Shortlisted councils will be then be asked to submit a detailed application of their project and will know if they are successful in October.

Drought zone for Tablelands A GROUP of organisations and industry representatives have joined forces to host a drought forum in Chillagoe this morning. The forum will give the community access to experts that can support them to manage the impact of drought. It comes as both the Mareeba and Tablelands council areas were declared drought zones by the State Government last Wednesday. Queensland is now officially 83.9 per cent “drought-declared” slightly down on the record 86.11 per cent on March 1. Organisations including Mareeba Shire Council, Northern Gulf Resource Management Group, Relationships Australia and Mental Illness Fellowship NQ will spearhead the event at Chillagoe Town Hall. Attendees will be exposed to a suite of resources and service providers to help them with a wide range of topics including coping with debt during drought, getting better internet access, succession planning and staying positive during tough times. Jim Brooks will speak on foreclosure – what it means, how to avoid it, what the process is if it does happen and how to move forward. That will be followed by a quick two-minute pitch from each of the service providers, which attendees will have the chance to talk one on one during breaks. The day will continue with further speakers on topics such as succession planning and opportunities for support in drought. Also present will be newly-appointed Drought Ambassadors in the Mareeba Shire, Lisa Wallace and Kathy Rowling, who are armed with knowledge on what assistance is available and how to access it. The recent drought declaration for the Tablelands and Mareeba shires allows farmers to access a range of drought assistance including some relief from electricity charges. But the Queensland Competition Authority is proposing to increase 2016-17 farming and irrigation tariffs 62, 65 and 66 by 10.3 percent from July 1. Farmers can head to www.dews.qld.gov.au/electricity/rebates/drought to check if they are eligible for a partial reimbursement on their electricity bill.
NAPLAN tests done and dusted
TABLELANDS school students have breathed a sigh of relief after finishing their NAPLAN tests last week. 235,000 students from across Queensland took part in the tests, which were held last Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday. “Since 2008, NAPLAN has provided a valuable snapshot of how students in Years 3, 5, 7 and 9 are performing in important aspects of literacy and numeracy,” said Queensland Education Minister Kate Jones. “Last year, Queensland students recorded their best ever results on NAPLAN which is a positive reflection on the hard work that goes on in schools every day.” The tests were broken up into three components - language conventions and writing, reading and numeracy. The Queensland Curriculum and Assessment Authority will provide students’ NAPLAN reports to schools by August for distribution to parents. For more information, head to www.naplan.edu.au

Breathe easy
OPEN HOME FRIDAY, MAY 20 & SATURDAY, MAY 21 11am-12noon
The first thing you notice when you enter this property is that it is set back enough in order not to be squashed between the neighbours. It's nice to have that bit of extra privacy when sleeping or entertaining. The next big thing is the extra high ceilings, makes you feel that you can freely breathe and there is so much less need for the airconditioning. If you like time spent outdoors then this large verandah is the place to be. You can access it through the dining/living, kitchen or master bedroom. The fourth room is of many uses. It has a queen size built-in bed that folds out of the wall. This room is so big that it can be a second lounge/rumpus or media room or maybe a visitors personal space. The under roof area of this house is somewhere in the high two-hundreds so even the laundry is spacious. Inspections can be arranged on short notice so come and see for yourself. Inspect this weekend or by appoitment with Elizabeth Bors at Altitude Realty Mareeba. EXPRESS sPORT Comets championship contenders The Comets have issued a strong challenge for the Mareeba Basketball Winter Season Championship Title, following an impressive 68 to 49 win over mens competition leaders Red Devils. Holding a 35 to 26 half time lead, the Comets consolidated their position after the half time interval to record an excellent win. A good display of accurate shooting was a feature of the clash between these two sides. Young Jeremy McKay stood out with his 30 points for the winners, while Toby Kerswell contributed well with 14 points. Clinton Cameron was in good touch for Red Devils, notching 26 points. But he lacked support in the scoring department, except for a number of good baskets by the recent young recruit Luke Fresta. In other mens fixtures, Ciggy Butts were fully extended by last placed Barras, before rallying to nab a 40-35 win. Ciggy Butts join Comets in equal second position on the ladder, just four competition points behind Red
MAREEBA
Devils with two fixture rounds remaining before semifinals. Meanwhile, Young G’s nine point win over Mareeba Express sees them well placed to gain a semi-final berth. In the ladies fixtures, Killers recorded their second win on the trot with a 30-18 defeat of Tequila Slammers. And the Divas just got over the line against the Serial Killers by a single point at 22- 21. Thursday afternoon junior division fixtures provided tremendous entertainment. The cliff hanger between Orange Tops and Sonlia Easys was a standout game, with Orange Tops narrow winners by 40-39. Aaron Cagat played strongly for Sonlia Easys and had the chance to steal the win away from Orange Tops, only failing to convert two free shots awarded right on full time. Playing outstanding for the Tops’ Jeremy McKay in a curtain-raiser performance to his fine display later on the night with Comets. Easys’ Jonah Hastie was also impressive with his contribution of 23 points, just failed to gain a win for his side.

Shane Boshammer, Sonya Alba-Miller and Deb Qazim after competing in the Ultra-Trail Australia 100 marathon last Saturday.
Runners do Mareeba proud A TRIO of Mareeba runners have pushed themselves to the limit in a marathon race like no other. Deb Qazim, Shane Boshammer and Sonya Alba-Miller all completed a gutbusting 100km run along New South Wales’ Blue Mountains in the Ultra-Trail Australia 100 marathon last Saturday. “This one was so tough, you were up and down constantly,” Mrs Alba-Miller said. “I was so sore. My knees were hurting. The last 40km is just thousands of steps. It felt like forever. That was the most challenging.” The course, which takes runners along a punishing stretch of mountain trails, featured 1400 competitors this year with Ms Qazim, Mr Boshammer and Mrs Alba-Miller finishing overall in 899th, 669th and 416th place respectively. Mrs Alba-Miller said the race was
the toughest she had ever competed in and credited her family with getting her through the final 40km. “I had a few tears on the track at the end and...I had to make a few phone calls to pep me up. I rang my husband, my sister and had a talk to mum while I was walking up the hill,” she said. “I just wanted to get to the end. The last kilometre was full of steps. I had to keep going. “It was just a relief to finish.” Mrs Alba-Miller said she was encouraged to compete in the race by Mr Boshammer and Ms Qazim, but conceded it was a challenge she was happy to do just once. “It’s one of those once-in-a-lifetime races. I don’t think I want to put myself through that again,” she said. “I don’t know how people do them all the time, it’s crazy.”

Double trouble as Roosters go down Mareeba Gladiators went down 52-20 to Innisfail. The Atherton Roosters have now suffered back-to-back defeats following Friday nights 24-20 loss to Ivanhoes at Smithfield. It was another night of errors for the Roosters, who again struggled with their ball handling. Ivanhoes came out of the blocks best and got straight down to business with a try after only three minutes. From there, the Roosters really didn’t recover and allowed their opposition to skip away to a 14-4 lead at the break. Atherton returns home to Roosters Stadium this Saturday and coach Dean Howard wants to make the best of it. “We want to get back on track with a win over Suburbs in front of our home crowd,” he
said. “The team knows where the improvement is needed and we’ll work hard at training this week.” Roosters won the under-18 match over Ivanhoes 18-12, while Ivanhoes won reserve grade 26-20 over the Roosters. Meanwhile, an improved second stanza from Innisfail allowed the defending premiers to maintain their unbeaten start to the Cairns District Rugby League premiership with a scrappy 52-20 victory over the Gladiators at Mareeba, on Saturday. The Gladiators allowed Innisfail to push out to a 22-4 lead midway through the first session, before putting themselves back in the picture with two tries in the minutes leading up
to halftime and a sniff of an upset victory going into the break 22-14 down. But the joy was short in the seventh round encounter as it turned into a 32 point lotto to the reigning premiers. Coach Josh Stowers crossed for two tries and was very impressive in a beaten side. The Gladiators recorded a convincing 2818 win over Innisfail in reserve grade. Mareeba have the competition bye this weekend, while Roosters Stadium Atherton hosts a feast of premiership competitions this Saturday. The Roosters take on Suburbs in three CDRL grades and the Northern Pride play Burliegh Bears. Atherton Roosters have suffered back-to-back defeats going down 2420 to Ivanhoes.
