Precinct upgrade

By Justin Fris

YUNGABURRA’s Avenue of Honour was the location of a special morning tea last Wednesday, which acknowledged a sizeable system upgrade. Through an in kind donation from both TORO Australia and Tableland Irrigation Repairs and Service, the precinct received a completely new irrigation system. Located along the Lake Tinaburra foreshore, the precinct has always been extremely signifi-

cant for those paying their respects to those who have made the ultimate sacrifice. Ray Byrne – who is a current member (and immediate past president) of the Afghanistan Avenue of Honour Association– said the new system was a welcomed addition. “It (the previous irrigation system) was becoming a little deficient,” he said. “And in other areas, it wasn’t working at all. “Organisers were so eager to have the precinct ready by June 2013; and it may have ended up a

little bit rushed.” Mr Byrne said himself and fellow members had a chat with Jim Grimshaw from Tableland Pump and Irrigation Repairs earlier this year and considered the alternative of replacing the whole system. Together with TORO Australia (who has assisted in providing likeminded equipment to burial and historical landmarks) they worked feverously and delivered the project within months. Regarded as one of the more reflective places

on the Tablelands, Mr Byrne said at any given time of day, scores of people will walk down to the foreshore and reflect quietly. “We’ve had an enormous response to all of the events we have held here,” he said. “It is estimated that we had over 3,000 people attend our special dawn service on ANZAC Day. “It is also very encouraging to see a continual stream of visitors – not only respect, but also use the precinct as their own personal healing place. Promising future for Madison By Justin Fris PROMISING youngster Madison Simonato has spent her school holidays down in Melbourne for a very significant reason. A talented ballerina, the Year 7 Mareeba State High School student spent time learning and training at the Australian Ballet School. Madison has spent the previous four years participating in the Australian Ballet School’s ‘Interstate and International’ training programme. During her time in Melbourne, she has spent time working with other equally talented girls across the nation – receiving the best coaching possible every step of the way. An exciting yet challenging decision awaits for Madison, who potentially could begin study at the Australian Ballet School’s full-time program next year – which would mean leaving friends and family in Mareeba. But despite such a difficult decision to make, Madison is in good hands. Along with her loving family, she has formed a special bond with her teacher Sarah Thorne, from the FNQ Dance Academy. Ms Thorne praised Madison for her fantastic work ethic and said her recognition of those assisting her throughout her journey has been very special. “Madi has a great work ethic and personal drive to succeed,” she said. “She is extremely dedicated to her training and demonstrates a wonderful appreciation and respect to those who assist her with reaching her goals.

Madison Simonato has spent the September school holidays in Melbourne training at the Australian Ballet School.

“Combined with the natural ability Madi possesses for dance, these attributes certainly mean her potential to succeed in this industry is very high, and limited only by her vision.”

With a good head on her shoulders, Madison appears ready for anything. She is interested in a career in physiotherapy – along with an overall interest in achieving high academically.

FOR many of us, the joys of being a child have come and gone; but for several hundreds of students at Mareeba State School, these pleasures are still very much alive. September 17 saw the students gather together for one of the most anticipated days on the primary school calendar. Dubbed ‘U/8’s Day’, it is an occasion which gives students an opportunity to enjoy fun activities with their peers. Students were able to enjoy over 30 activities, which included: a jumping castle, eating delicious fruit kebabs and even partaking in some karaoke. Mareeba SS event organiser Valerie Dayes said the 2015 ‘U/8’s Day’ theme was ‘Voices of the Children’ which saw special music performances from several groups. These included the Mareeba SS singing choir and AUSLAN singing group, along with the Mareeba State High School. Ms Dayes added that she wished to thank all sponsors, parents and volunteers who made the day a sterling success; and put smiles on several faces in the process for the remainder of the day.

Avenue of Honour receives upgrade From Page 1

“I’ve even seen people walk down to the foreshore who have been dealing with a family bereavement say that it is has been a lovely place to sit and reflect.” Division 4 Tablelands Regional councillor Rod Marti – who has played an integral part in Council’s support of the precinct – said the foreshore was also a very special place for him. “For me, the ‘Avenue’ is very special place that will grow in stature over time,” he said. “It may have had its original genesis from one of the fallen, but today it is a memorial to all the fallen. Personally, it has been my privilege to be involved with it from day one - every time I go down there, I have to pinch myself - it’s a special place. From the moment it was mooted, support has come from all levels of government, but most of all the Australian community.” “The feedback is overwhelming especially if you spend time down there,” Cr Marti added. “ As a member of the committee, we often find ourselves down there for working bees or events. People from all over Australia will walk up to you and talk often about a family member or someone they know who is on the Honour Board. Other times you might see someone there having a quiet moment by themselves. The feedback in the guest book is extremely positive, many people comment how the memorial is unique, personable and fit for purpose.

“Feedback from ratepayers is always positive, although I’m not sure that it’s well understood just how much activity the Avenue creates for Yungaburra.” Cr Marti said the precinct was Australia’s only sole memorial dedicated to conflict in Afghanistan – which in many ways make it a national asset we can all be proud of. “The new irrigation system will make management much easier and improve the aesthetics,” he said. “The value of the contribution (water/sprinkler fittings, control panel, technology etc) of TORO is $7000 and the value of the contribution (design, labour, plant, equipment) of the Grimshaw’s was $2000. “Our last system failed to wet all the areas we needed wet, and also left wet patches at the lower end of the ‘Avenue’, because when the irrigation was off, water from higher up would drain back down and continually leak up through the sprinklers at the lower parts. “All these things make a substantial difference when you’re trying to keep something looking good everyday of the year. One of the things that’s good about the TORO gear is that it’s used in other war memorials around the world because of its precision. “The ‘Avenue’ is set apart from other attractions in the TRC because it is Australia’s only memorial dedicated to the fallen in Afghanistan, making it a national asset. It has struck a chord with the entire Australian community and the visitor comments always reflect that.”

Avenue volunteers Lyle Wakeling and Tim Webster-Young both attended the special morning tea last Wednesday morning at the Avenue of Honour in Yungaburra.

Barron Valley Hotel wins state award By Justin Fris THE Barron Valley Hotel (BV) has received further success at state level, continuing its lofty standard as one of the premier hotel venues on the Tablelands. Michael Nasser and his wife Maree were on hand at the 2015 Queensland Hotels Association’s ‘Awards for Excellence’ which were held in Brisbane recently. Awarded the ‘Most Outstanding Community Service & Achievement 1-99 Employees’, it further capped off sustained success for the venue. Mr Nasser – who has become a fixture of Atherton rugby league – spent several years as president of the Atherton Roosters and is a current patron of the club. Along with this, Mr Nasser has often provided employment to several younger members of the local Atherton community. “Our hotel is currently in its 85th year,” he said. “It’s been continuous from generation to generation and hopefully it continues to a fourth generation.” The BV sponsors several local sporting clubs (including the Atherton Turf Club since the end of WWII)– and does more than its fair share for local causes. Recently, the venue raised $6000 towards the Ravenshoe appeal. Along with their award, the BV was also a finalist in two other categories – ‘responsible serving of alcohol’ and ‘best casual dining’. “We work very hard in our responsible service of alcohol,” he said. “We’ve also work closely with our crowd controllers and Atherton Police as part of a high level liquor accord.”

‘The speed of the flames was extraordinary’ By Justin Fris SEVERAL properties within Tolga are recovering from a recent major grassfire, which threatened both homes and lives. Beginning at 4pm on September 17, local eyewitnesses claimed that flames reached roof level – such was the nature of their height. One ratepayer who was caught in the crossfire, was Tablelands Regional councillor Marjorie Pagani, who worked collaboratively with neighbours and emergency services within the Allawah Retreat precinct. “September 17’s fire at Allawah and surrounding properties destroyed property, infrastructure, grasslands, and countless wildlife,” she said. “The speed and intensity of the flames was extraordinary. We were fortunate in having a good water supply (initially) and were able to hold back the flames with our hoses and our small water truck – but only just.

“Had the fire units not made it up the hill when they did, the loss would have been far greater.” Cr Pagani added that she was deeply concerned about the environmental aspects of the fire and hoped that locals would continue to adhere to all guidelines regarding fire in the region. “The fire services are constantly telling us to avoid lighting fires – especially without a permit or equipment nearby - listen to them. “We were as well prepared as possible, with fire tracks cleared, close trees cut back, and grass cleared as far as possible. “But what we could not do is clear on the property where the fire started – or anywhere in between. “Whilst we are thankful for the fact that there was no loss of life or major structural damage, we are saddened at the destruction of the environment and the birds and animals, and urge everyone to ensure the rules are followed when it comes to lighting fires.”

The fire had a very big impact on the local environment, with Cr Pagani warning local rate payers to be mindful of fire legislation.

Entsch encouraged by ‘Safety package’ FEDERAL Member for Leichhardt Warren Entsch is heartened by a recent investment from the Turnbull Government to curve domestic violence in Australia. Newly-elected Prime Minister Malcolm Turnbull announced that $100 million will be spent toward ‘immediate and practical’ measures to keeping vulnerable women and children safe. Mr Entsch said it was a clear indication that the Coalition was committed to protecting those who needed it most. “So far this year, more than 60 women have been killed in domestic violence incidents,” Mr Entsch said. “That is why governments across Australia have made addressing this issue a national priority. “We look forward to working with states and territories to trial innovative technologies to keep women safe, to train more frontline staff to recognise and respond appropriately to women experienc-

ing violence and to provide better resources to help parents, teachers and students.” Locally, Mareeba Shire Council is one of many local government jurisdictions who will be doing their bit to show support for the cause. A march against domestic violence will be held on Thursday, October 8 at 12 noon, commencing at Arnold Park. Mayor Tom Gilmore said he was keen for the MSC to send a powerful message against domestic violence. “Recent tragedies, including the deaths of two women and a six-year-old girl, have caused widespread distress and anger. A number of organisations have been invited to attend, but I encourage everyone to join in this public stand,” he said. “The campaign, which will use #SaferFamilies to spread the message via social media, aims to encourage state-wide solidarity in addressing domestic violence.”

TURNBULL Government Minister Mal Brough has flagged potential changes to senate voting in Australia prior to the next election – and the minor political parties are far from amused. Minister Brough – who holds the Special Minister of State and Defence Material portfolios – said he was interested in making the senate voting system ‘more transparent’. “If you have a look at how it works now, you have people minuscule percentages of the vote harvesting preferences across the political spectrum,” he said. “If you have a party on the hard left, being elected on the preferences of the hard right, that’s hardly demonstrative of what people are trying to achieve.”

Katter’s Australia Party Leader and Federal Member for Kennedy Bob Katter saw Mr Brough’s remarks as a direct attack on minor political parties; and said it was an attempt to wipe them out. “Clive Palmer’s dead right on this occasion when he says this is an attempt by the major parties to rig the system and emasculate the ‘other’ point of view,” Mr Katter said. “I think people like Dio Wang, John Madigan, Nick Xenophon, Ricky Muir, Bob Day and even Jacqui Lambie are outstanding examples of independents and small parties who make a very valuable contribution. “They vote, in my opinion, infinitely more intelligently than those in the mainstream major parties.”

Swimming ‘royalty’ comes to Mareeba

By Justin Fris THE Mareeba Swimming Club received a visit from Queensland swimming royalty last Tuesday, with esteemed swimming representative Drew McGregor spending time with local swimmers. Mr McGregor – who is Swimming Qld’s coaching director – spent time with 56 swimmers and spoke about important swimming concepts. He also spent time with June Cotter and fellow coaches within the region and said he was very impressed by the standard upheld by the club. Ms Cotter said: “Our kids have done really well. We had a total of 56 children attend, which ranged from ages 6 to 23, which is a fantastic number considering the school holidays.

“We had several swimmers from Kuranda come down for the day – they have been training with us while their facility is being maintained – along with several from Dimbulah.” She added: “It was also very handy to have our new shade cloth up for the event – as the swimmers could have got pretty sunburnt. “We are very thankful for the students at Mareeba State High School students for their initiative on social media to push for it, along with support from both Mareeba Shire Council and the former Member for Cook, David Kempton.” The Mareeba Swimming Club will be hosting two upcoming events – Inclusion Carnival Fun Day (October 6) and Mareeba Carnival (October 18) – with everyone welcome to attend.

Restrain your children The State’s peak motoring body has expressed its shock at the high number of Queensland parents failing to restrain their children in cars. Figures released to RACQ by the Department of Transport and Main Roads revealed in the first four months of this year more than 750 parents were fined for having a child unrestrained. Ms Ritchie said what was most frightening was almost five percent of the child seat infringements were for people failing to restrain children under six months of age. “Child restraints save lives, and failing to protect the most vulnerable of passengers is appalling,” Ms Ritchie said. “These fines have been handed out to parents who have either incorrectly installed child restraints, they’ve installed the wrong child restraint for their child’s age or they haven’t had the child restrained at all. “It’s time parents woke up and realised they have a responsibility to keep their child safe while in the car.” Ms Ritchie said parents not only risked serious injury and death to their children but they also risked a $353 fine and three demerit points. “If you’re in doubt about whether your child restraint meets the legal requirements or is installed correctly then you can always have it checked by professionals,” she said. RACQ conducts Kids and Cars presentations for mothers groups, child carers and foster parents offering free checks of child seats and also offers professional fitment of child restraints.

Entrepreneurial workshop aims to promote creativity MAREEBA is set to receive a significant entrepreneurial event, with the second instalment of ‘Start Up Tablelands’ set to be held in the town next May. Council representatives, business personnel and locals gathered at the Tolga Hotel last Thursday afternoon and brainstormed ideas as to how to make the concept stronger. A 54 hour event held over a weekend – ‘Start Up Tablelands’ is a workshop which promotes both entrepreneurism and innovation. Malanda Chamber of Commerce vice president Christine Doan said event organisers were keen to facilitate several lead in to next year’s event, along with having an equal representation for both the northern and southern Tablelands. “We’ve run to budget,” she said. “Along with this, we’ve seen very good volunteer

numbers and are keen to dot as many of the lead in events across the Tablelands as we can.” Ms Doan added that event organisers were currently assessing their options to gain larger financial grants for the concept – with will enhance the quality for all involved. Participants formed teams and work together to formulate a sound business idea, along with networking with others across a wide cross-section of industries. Mareeba Shire Council was represented by Cr Mary Graham, who was very enthusiastic about the event’s future in Mareeba. “This is a very resourceful community - look how it has reacted to change in the past and that spirit and ability surrounds us today,” Cr Graham said. “There are lots of people out there with

really good ideas who simply need that little help on how to take it to the next step. “This workshop will give them an opportunity to do just that. It will give them a platform to be able to take their idea and progress it into reality. “I encourage anyone and everyone that have an idea or even a vague concept to come along to this workshop.”

Greg Dennis is very passionate about his milk.

Scenic Rim milk now sold in Mareeba MILK lovers in Mareeba are in for a real treat, with ‘Scenic Rim 4Real Milk’ now being sold in a variety of local retailers. Passionate dairy farmer Greg Dennis – who famously cut ties with dairy giant Parmalat – fought manfully to bottle, produce and distribute his own milk. Many considered the move away from Parmalat a very daring move – with Mr Dennis battling at times to ensure his property livelihood. After putting up his own livelihood and setting up his own processing network, Mr Dennis would go on to win 2014 ‘Dairy Farmer of the Year’. “We had a hunch there’d be strong demand for farm gate fresh, minimally processed milk,” Greg says.

“As people experience an improvement in the flavour and health benefits from 4Real milk, they are sharing their personal stories with us. Many who have been off dairy for years are able to drink 4Real milk, which is un-homogenised and sold directly to shops. “People keep telling us it’s great to be able to drink milk the way it used to be. We are thrilled to now be able to bring our milk to towns throughout Queensland. ”My aim is to return a fair farm gate milk price to the dairy farmer – while providing a superior, healthier product to the consumer.” To learn more about the milk or find your nearest location, visit: www. scenicrim4realmilk.com.au

Entsch surprised by fuel report findings

FEDERAL Member for Leichhardt Warren Entsch was quite surprised at findings within a recent fuel report. A report on the Australian petroleum market found that Cairns petrol prices were considered ‘average’ compared with other major regional Queensland locations. Mr Entsch – who spends a considerable amount of time talking with locals within his electorate (which includes Cairns) – said the findings appeared to be contrary to his dialogue with locals. “Many Cairns residents talk to me about the high cost of fuel here in Far North Queensland, and complain that we are paying significantly more than those in the south,” said Mr Entsch. “This has led me to write to the ACCC and the relevant minister on several occasions to raise the issue with them and request a deep-dive investigation into the Cairns fuel market. “The two most recent – looking at the March and June quarters of 2015 – have shown that Cairns is paying, at most, 2.8 cents per litre more than the regional average in Queensland. “The ACCC report also found that prices are generally higher in regional locations due to a number of factors including less local competition, lower volumes of fuel sold, distance, and lower convenience store sales. “It does concern me however when I see that prices at our local retailers rarely differ by more than a cent per litre, therefore I will continue to keep a close eye on fuel prices here in Cairns moving forward. “I’m also pleased to see that United Petroleum has recently opened their first Far North Queensland site at Koah, west of Cairns – where they had cut the price of diesel to 121.9 cents per litre, and petrol to 132.9 cents per litre.”

Diabetes increase in NQ RECORDED cases of Diabetes across North Queensland continue to increase, with nearly 10 people newly diagnosed every day. Diabetes Queensland CEO Michelle Trute said she believed Diabetes could eventually overtake heart disease as the biggest impact on the region’s health system. “We’re trying to make sure people in the Far North know what they can do to protect themselves against Type 2 Diabetes,” she said. “Diabetes can result in serious health

consequences including kidney disease, loss of limbs, heart disease and blindness, but in most cases Type 2 Diabetes can be prevented. “People have no choice about type 1 diabetes; it’s an autoimmune condition that can strike anyone,” Ms Trute said. “Type 2 Diabetes is a progressive condition, and can be prevented or delayed in up to 60 per cent of cases by keeping a healthy weight, eating well and being active. “Keep it simple. Take the dog for a walk and eat two fruit and five vegetables every day. “Make small changes that you can live with.”

Increase in FNQ-based Syphilis infections THE Tropical Public Health Services (based out of Cairns) are encouraging individuals to maintain safe sex practices, after a recent spike in recorded Syphilis infections across FNQ. 60 recorded cases of Syphilis had been presented to healthcare professionals at the end of August, which had already past the 2014 figure of 39 cases. TPHS director Dr Richard Gair said the figures were concerning and that people should be aware of potential consequences from high-risk sexual activity. “Syphilis is highly infectious and can often be present without symptoms which can make it difficult to diagnose without a blood test,” he said. “It can lead to serious complications including an increased risk of HIV transmission.” Director of Sexual Health at the Cairns Sexual Health Service Dr Darren Russell said infected pregnant women could unknowingly transmit the infection to their unborn baby causing congenital syphilis, which could result in miscarriage, stillbirth or infant death. “We recognise that this is a very delicate matter and can be difficult for people, however Syphilis can be treated easily and effectively and the testing process is simple,” he said. “The sooner Syphilis is detected; the more likely it is to be cured quickly. “Right now we are urging the general public to access local health services and also calling on GPs to encourage testing in people at risk, which includes young Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people, gay and bi-sexual men. “Syphilis is spread from sexual contact

with a person who has the infection and can be prevented through the proper use of condoms - prevention is always better than cure.”

Pensioners eligible for free waste-collection service PENSIONERS within the Tablelands Regional Council jurisdiction are eligible for a free waste collection service before October 9. As part of the TRC’s ‘Pre-Cyclone’ clean up, Mayor Rosa Lee Long said now was the perfect time to prepare your backyard before the wet season. Mayor Lee Long said: “Now is a great time to clear up your yard by cutting back trees, shrubs and bushes in preparation for cyclone season. “Council will assist residents who receive an aged or disability pension and are located in an area which has a kerbside collection by removing waste which is hazardous during a storm or cyclone. “Hazardous waste includes green waste, iron and general yard debris. White goods, furniture, household rubbish, car bodies and tyres will not be collected as part of the precyclone pensioner collection.”

Cook Shire keeps watchful eye on Palaszczuk decision THE Cook Shire Council will keep an eye on the Palaszczuk Government’s plans in regard to rehabilitation of the old Collingwood tin mine site on Shipton Flat’s road, Helenvale. A facility which used to be one of the biggest producers of tin in the entire nation – Collingwood was shut down in 2008, due to reduced economic productivity. Ahead of another impending wet season, the control and maintenance of the land has reverted back to the Department of Environment and Heritage Protection (EHP). Cook Shire Mayor Peter Scott said:“In preparation for the upcoming wet season EHP is developing a water management plan for the site, which will involve the discharge of some water from the site into the Annan River, as has occurred in previous years. “Discharge from the site has been undertaken on a regular basis prior to the wet season in previous years to maximise storage

EXPRESS yourself With reference to Prior Creek Precinct. I suggest that before excessive money is spent on yet more gardens, parks and such – that Council should consider the lack of TRC maintenance and money for the upkeep of all our existing gardens, parks and playgrounds. Not to mention how seldom the edges of our roads are mowed and kept tidy. eg; Hallorans Hill park and playground, and those at Tinaroo, Yungaburra, Kairi, Tolga, Walkamin, Malanda, Millaa Millaa, Herberton, Ravenshoe and Mt.Garnet - these are all calling out for care and maintenance. We have Tinaroo, Lakes Barrine and Eacham and waterfalls galore. Do we really need a water park? I love gardens, especially botanic gardens- the pride of any town. Can we afford to think along these lines when poor old Mt Garnet is refused a small salary for a Patrol Officer and better maintenance services, due

to lack of funds? I presume that many ratepayers like me would like to have some say where our ratepayer money is spent. Unfortunately, this is why we have elected councillors and hope for sensible spending. Thank you Councillor Linwood for trying hard for Mt Garnet. Congratulations to Cr’s Marti, Linwood, and Pagani for also trying hard at the TRC meeting (September 17) to keep the meeting as close as possible to a democratic process. In the middle of this meeting, when discussions were getting hot, a councillor called for a “confidential session” to continue the discussion away from the public. One in the gallery should be excused at feeling disturbed at this time, and for having immediate thoughts of distrust and lack of confidence in the outcome. At the same meeting, when there was difficulty between councillors in coming to

John Williamson inspired amendment tabled FEDERAL Member for Kennedy Bob Katter put forward a special amendment in Canberra last week to protect the trade mark of our national song ‘Waltzing Matilda’. Mr Katter felt compelled to move the Trade Marks Amendment (Iconic Symbols of National Identity) Bill 2015, after a Victorian business attempted to impose their own license over the song. “A national iconic symbol of its very nature should not be trademarked,” Mr Katter said. “By definition, a symbolic emblem, whether it is Ned Kelly, The Man from Snowy River, Boomerang or The Rising Sun badge, should not be able to be turned into a property right. “Whilst ‘Waltzing Matilda’ is not our national anthem, it most certainly is our national song. “We are calling this amendment the ‘John Williamson Amendment’, as the famous country singer said he’d go to jail rather than not sing ‘Waltzing Matilda’. “If this company is able to restrain people from using a term in the making of a movie or the singing of a song, it is an outrageous and offensive concept, which we seek to prevent by this legislation. “Not only should these symbols be available to all of Australia, their usage should be promoted at every available opportunity by the people of Australia.”

‘Rally against Ice’ YARRABAH hosted a special rally last Thursday, in which officials from various health organisations met with locals and warned them about the dangers of ‘ice’ (crystal methamphetamine).

In the meantime the public are advised not to access the former mine site due to safety hazards associated with the mine infrastructure which remains.”

a decision, the Mayor adjourned the meeting, leaving Cr Marti and Cr Linwood to the boardroom and gallery, and Cr Pagani waiting on speaker phone. The remainder of the crew, shuffled off to meet in private. It is time for us to really wonder what does go on behind closed doors between the CEO/ Acting CEO/Mayor/Cr Hodge and Cr Stocker, at their so called “secret meetings”. Fairness and honesty has long gone from our council chambers. Ratepayers are paying a Mayor and five councillors to run our show. Not a Mayor and two Councillors. Come to a meeting and observe the “pathetic procedures”. Louise Pensini, Atherton

from the Westminster system was Britain’s WWII PM Winston Churchill, who said: “No part of the education of a politician is more indispensable than the fighting of elections.” Never have those words rung truer than when considering the unelected Cr Pagani and the problems that have beset the TRC since her appointment. We’ve previously witnessed the ‘Great Councillor Walkout’ - and now we learn that Cr Pagani plans to sue the other councillors. A trained barrister appointed as a councillor threatening to sue properly elected local leaders over procedural matters is akin to a serving Army sniper moving into a street and then threatening to shoot established neighbours over boundary fence disputes. These threats prove that Winston Churchill was right and TRC CEO Ian Church, whose committee selected Cr Pagani from a field of 56 applicants, got it very, very wrong. Peter Campion, Tolga

What’s on at the Rising Sun Cinema

The holidays are coming to a rapid end, but there's still plenty of time, plus a long weekend ahead, with heaps more to see at the movies at Mareeba's Rising Sun Cinema. New on screen this week is the sensational new Aussie flic ODDBALL. Based on a true story and starring Shane Jacobson in a movie that'll entertain and amuse you. BLINKY BILL is a colourful new interpretation of this iconic koala that many Australians grew up with. PIXELS and MAZE RUNNER – THE SCORCH TRIALS, are both top rate viewing and well worth seeing.

ODDBALL

The true story of Allan "Swampy" Marsh and his Maremma dog Oddball. Swampy convinced local authorities to allow Oddball to protect a colony of Little

Penguins on Middle Island from wild cats and dogs. Oddball succeeds in his campaign and becomes a front runner for Maremma dogs being used to protect other endangered Australian wildlife. Great family entertainment.

PAN

BLINKY BILL THE MOVIE

Blinky Bill (Ryan Kwanten) leaves the little haven of Green Patch to search for his missing adventurer father Mr Bill (Richard Roxburgh) who left a year earlier to rescue lost animals. Blinky sets off naively, albeit with good intentions without telling his mother (Deborah Mailman). But he quickly discovers that the world beyond Green patch - the Outback - is a dangerous place and is confronted by a vicious feral cat Sir Claude (Rufus Sewell) and hungry crocodiles. He finds an unexpected ally when he meets Nutsy (Robin McLeavy), a feisty zoo koala plus Jacko (David Wenham), the nervous frill-necked lizard and two helpful emus (Toni Collette), who all help him on his adventure.

MAZE RUNNER – THE SCORCH TRIALS

In this next chapter of the epic "Maze Runner" saga, Thomas (Dylan O'Brien) and his fellow Gladers face their greatest

challenge yet: searching for clues about the mysterious and powerful organisation known as WCKD. Their journey takes them to the Scorch, a desolate landscape filled with unimaginable obstacles. Teaming up with resistance fighters, the Gladers take on WCKD's vastly superior forces and uncover its shocking plans for them all.

PIXELS

Sam Brenner, Will Cooper, Ludlow Lamonsoff, and Eddie "The Fire Blaster" Plant all played classic arcade video games as teenagers. But now they have to use their skills to try to save the world from aliens. The aliens watched video feeds that they thought was a declaration of war. So they send down the classic arcade games to destroy earth. They also get help from a military specialist. They have three lives and if all three get used then earth will be destroyed, and every time they lose a life the aliens take someone's life. Who will win, us or the aliens? It's an all-out battle to save our planet and everyone on it.

Come & run with the bulls!

What a year From the Squirts (aged 3 to 5 years), to the Premier Division, the Mareeba Bulls have had success across every age group. With the club’s second year in the Cairns competition, the club’s junior numbers have swollen again to more than 150 junior players and more than 80 senior players. The club has had success in the non-competitive age groups from Under 6’s to Under 11’s, with numbers growing and players enjoying every game. This year was our most successful in the competitive age groups with the Under 12 team making the grand final; the Under 13 team making the semi finals and the Under 15 team making the major semi final. I would like to take this opportunity on behalf of the club to thank all the coaches, players, parents and sponsors, who have helped make this year’s junior competition the most successful yet. The senior teams have once again had success this year. The Under 16 team, which now follows the senior division, won an exciting grand final - our ladies team showed real potential and the youth division is also rebuilding into a strong force. Mareeba United Football Club’s 2nd division team made the semi-finals, the reserve grade won the premiership and made the grand final, along with the Premier Men’s division, who won the Mareeba Mazda Cup, the FNQ Cup, premiership and grand final. The recent grand final win will be spoken about for generations to come, with the Bulls coming back from a seemingly impossible position. Once again thank you to the coaches, players, supporters, sponsors and our many volunteers for all your time and efforts this year. A big thank you to the committee for all your hard work – you have been fantastic in making this year

Crad Evans Shield

the success it has been. We have achieved a lot on the field, but also many things have been achieved off the field as well, with projects finished and new ones started. We have achieved all this in our 70th year. The club and community have one more trophy to win before we call an end to the season – the much talked about Crad Evans Shield – a competition that has been going since 1963. Mareeba won the shield the first year it was played for - then never won it again until 2001 – a 38 year wait. Since 1963, Mareeba has won six Crad Evans titles and is going for a record seventh win this Saturday night at home. The Mareeba Bulls haven't had the privilege of hosting the Crad Evans for 10 years, so the opportunity doesn't come around very often. Mareeba United Football Club welcomes all the travelling teams from Cairns and Townsville to Borzi Park this weekend. I urge all lovers of sport, whatever code and the community to come and cheer on the reserve grade and premier men’s teams this Saturday, so the whole community can be a part of something very special. I hope to see you all there so we can celebrate together and thanks again. MUFC – It’s our club, our town, our future. Raymond Cater President, Mareeba United Football Club

From our team to yours

Congratulations on a stellar season and good luck in bringing home the Crad Evans once again!

THE Premier Reserve instalment of the Crad Evans Shield will see the Mareeba United Football Club take on Brothers, in a repeat of last season’s final. After finishing the season on top, MUFC were defeated by their routine nemesis Leichhardt 3-1 in the grand final a fortnight ago. It was a result which clearly disappointed Marcello Savaglio (pictured), who enjoyed a fantastic season as MUFC’s reserves coach. “We are coming into the Crad Evans with high confidence, despite what happened during the grand final,” he said. “Obviously things didn’t go to plan during the day, but hopefully the week’s rest has freshened everyone up and we can get back into it.” Savaglio’s men had a solid appetite for goal in 2015, finding the onion bag 74 times in 18 matches – along with an impressive goal difference of 56 to go alongside it. “There was a turning point in the season where we did start off pretty slow,” he said. “We had a few losses early in the season and it took a couple of the senior guys coming back into the team which made our squad a little stronger. “And then from after that, having a run of about 10 straight games in a row undefeated was sort of a turning point for us. “The game against Leichhardt toward the end of the season, where we came away with a 4-1 win, which we had to win, to ensure our premiership chances.” Similarly, there was an infamous midweek clash with Leichhardt during the penultimate round of the season. A crash on the Kuranda Range saw the Premier Men’s clash postponed – but the reserves clash ensued – a thrilling end-to-end 1-1 draw which is still being talked about to this day. “We needed something at least out of that game,” Savaglio said. “And a point ended up being enough, because the following week we managed to get a win against Souths (Southside Comets). “At times, our depth was stretched

because of injury and suspension, but training as a senior squad has really had its benefits. “It was beneficial for Alex to have players like Ben Stabile and Dave Cater fitted straight into his premier’s side.” “It’s very difficult, because we don’t know who we are really going up against,” he said. “We know the Townsville style obviously – and for me it is ok, because we are playing our opponent from last year. From what I’ve gathered from that team (Brothers), they were very physical and in the same token, very skilful as well. “So we very much need to be on the ball. It’s very difficult to see how they will turn up – 450km away and we just don’t get to see them. “I just want to be there for the team, try to get them ready and hopefully get a good result out of it.” Ageless shot stopper Ronnie Leporati is also looking forward to the match and offered some insight into what skills are pivotal for him on game day. “It’s one of the biggest stages up here in the north,” he said. “An opportunity to see who the best is in North Queensland and I’m looking forward to it. “I’ve got confidence in my defenders,” Leporati added. “I suppose they have confidence in me – I don’t go out there and tell them what to do. “Out there they know their job and I know my job. “(In terms of skills) I think it helps the team to talk to them. It does gee players up when you tell them what is going on – and I think even if they miss a shot, encouragement and talking is a very important side of a goalkeeper.”

We will be there to cheer you on! 233 Byrnes St, Mareeba P: 4092 6778

go out and play our football. “And that’s the real disappointment from the first half in our grand final – it simply wasn’t us. It was probably the worst first half of football we’ve ever played. “It wasn’t until half time that we actually woke up and started playing our football, that we put ourselves in a position to do what we did.” The Mareeba United Football Club will be hosting their first Crad Evans Shield in 10 years – with Coach Srhoj hoping the entire region can come along and enjoy the grand occasion. “Ironically, we are hosting the same team as we did 10 years ago,” he said. “We won that game 3-0 – and there is actually three or four current boys who played in that game.” MUFC talisman Wayne Srhoj has played in plenty of big matches abroad during his career, but the upcoming fixture is particularly significant for him, given his proud affiliation with his hometown. “At home, here, it will be a little more special and I’m looking forward to it,” he said. “When you come here on a Saturday night, with all the family and friends – it really is a great atmosphere.” The Bulls went undefeated in every match they took to the field within the league campaign, and scored an impressive 51 goals from 18 matches. Bulls gloveman Julian Madrid had an impressive season between the sticks and was backed up adequately by Ronnie Leporati, who between them only conceded 10 goals.

THE Premier Men’s showdown of the Crad Evans Shield between the Mareeba United Football Club and MA (Mundingburra Aitkenvale) Olympic is a battle of two quality sides. On the pitch, this is clearly evident, with both sides reaching grand finals in their respective leagues after finishing in top spot. But off the pitch, both sides have quality club cultures. They have high standards, expect quality and never shirk from a contest. For the hosts, they have enjoyed a welcomed week off from playing duties, after a historical 3-2 comeback grand final win over Stratford. MUFC coach Alex Srhoj (pictured) has had an opportunity to refresh several members of his squad and has put them through their paces on the training track. “We have to stay focused because we have another job to do,” he said. “That win last Saturday isn’t going to give us any extra points next Saturday. “We can enjoy it (the grand final victory) but we need to make sure we do our job.” Srhoj added: “Probably the one thing it does show is that they are a good side,” he said. “You don’t go undefeated for a long period of time without being a good side. We’ve got to show them the respect that they deserve. “The league in Townsville is a strong, physical competition – I’d like to say that the FNQ comp is a little technically better – it’ll be a battle; a real tough game, but our real advantage is playing at home.” “Olympic had a very similar season to our season,” he said. “Going by the stats, it’s going to be a pretty even game. “We know a few names in the team –we’ve had a few people say that they are very strong, direct side and very physical. “We have to be ready to counter that, but the main thing is for us to just

Third time lucky for Edge Hill? EDGE Hill United have been at the top of the class in FNQ Ladies football and it doesn’t take much to work out why. Under the guidance of Dean Ashton (pictured), female football at the club has never looked brighter, with sustained success a handy by-product. The Tigers finished the season on top spot of the Premier Ladies competition, with a staggering goal difference of 68.

Their strikers truly gave defenders nightmares, slotting 80 goals in 15 matches. Throughout the season, the Southside Comets would prove their greatest challenge, with the pair both fighting out each match to the end. Major semi final honours went by the way of the Tigers 2-1, before one of the most incredible grand final finishes. Deadlocked at 0-0 after 120 minutes of football, the dreaded penalty shoot-out was called upon to find a winner. Katelyn McCullum was sensational for the Tigers between the sticks, with the team eventually prevailing 4-2 on penalties. Ashton said: “I would have liked to try and knock it earlier on the head (laughs). It was definitely an interesting feeling to win on penalties. “I let the girls have a couple of days off after the match, so we trained Thursday last week – along with Monday and WednesU&I Town Plan is a day leading up to the Crad Evans. proud sponsor of the The final will also prove to be a Tigers curtain call for promising Mareeba Bulls, and would central midfielder Ashleigh Amadio, who will be playing her final like to wish all the players match for the club. and the club as a whole “Ashleigh will be playing her final game for us before movall the best in the coming ing down to Brisbane for uni, he said. “We are really going to miss Crad Evans Finals. her. Despite only being 18 years of M: 0411 344 110 age, Amadio has set a fantastic E: ramon.samanes@gmail.com standard for her teammates to W: www.uitownplanning.com.au follow. Other girls (among a true team effort all season) to have

performed well include Tegan Walker and Shelley Macaulay. Such is the passion for representing the gold and black, some players travel to and from Innisfail each week. Ashton added that the team bonding with the entire squad has also proved beneficial and he tries to ensure the squad are relaxed before each game. “I’ve been coaching them for a while, he said. “Along with this, Tamara Ortiz has been an absolutely fantastic captain for us. Similarly, Ashton has also found success with the club’s ladies Premier Reserve team, who swept all before them. Only losing once during the regular season - the Tigers scored an astonishing 207 goals – and only conceded 20. In a four team competition, both the Tigers and Stratford set the pace all year and played off in the grand final. The Tigers would go on to win 6-0. The Tigers are currently 0 from 2 in ladies success in the Crad Evans Shield. All they’ve known so far is heartache – is this year third time lucky? Edge Hill also had an impressing season under the tutorage of Gordon Cashmere in the 2nd division male competition. With MUFC having an indifferent form slump, it was left for the Tigers and Stratford to fight it out for the title. Despite ultimately being defeated 2-1 in the grand final to Stratford, Cashmere’s men will feel confident on ending their season on a high against MA Olympic. Olympic played in a significantly shorter second division campaign (10 matches) and won their title on goal difference from the Rebels Gold outfit – however Edge Hill will still be very much on high alert.

FOOTBALL’s elite from Townsville are planning to upset the FNQ heavyweights in the Crad Evans Shield. Regarded as one of the finest and most famous football clubs in North Queensland, Mundingburra Aitkenvale (MA) Olympic are no strangers to big football occasions. Olympic scored an impressive 41 goals during their Premier League campaign, with their miserly defence only conceding 10. MA Olympic president Ben Picken said that the team will travel up from Townsville on the day of the final and will travel to Cairns post-match, where they will be based. Mr Picken added: “We’ve had all five senior grade sides qualify for the grand final this year, which has been very special. Our club culture is very much ‘stand behind one another’. Brothers have enjoyed a memorable reserves campaign under the guidance of Steve McNaughton and will face the bulls in the reserves showcase. Things were tense for quite some time in the final run home, before they were able to pip MA Olympic by a point for the title. McNaughton said: “We’ve got a decent amount of players to pick from and will be giving some younger lads a chance. Edge Hill United have had a watershed year under Dean Ashton, with both ladies sides (Premier and Reserves) competing in Shield finals – such is their committed excellence to female football. They will face Brothers (Premiers) and Warriors (Reserves) in two eagerly awaited matches. In the 2nd division final, Edge Hill United will face MA Olympic with both sides up for it.

Townsville’s finest - an insight into NQ football’s elite By Justin Fris

SEVERAL of Townsville’s travelling football contingent to Borzi Park this Saturday are adamant they are not simply making up the numbers in the various Crad Evans Shield finals. The North Queensland Premier League has become a real hotbed for football in the region, with historic clubs, firm but fair play and a solid appetite for goal. MA Olympic will compete against the Mareeba United Football Club in the Premier Men’s final – and have enjoyed their league season as trendsetters. It was a different story in the finals however, with Olympic surprisingly mugged by the Warriors in their major semi final. This forced Olympic to qualify for their grand final appearance the hard way, with a 3-1 preliminary final win over Brothers just the tonic.

MA Olympic president Ben Picken said that the 2015 season was a memorable one for his club, particularly at senior level. “This year we will have all five senior teams competing in grand finals,” he said. “Our club culture is all about ‘standing behind one another’. “Our biggest issue in terms of squad availability will revolve around the date change,” Picken added. “We will field a very competitive side, but we will not be at full strength. “Approximately three quarters of our line up will be from our Premier Men’s squad, with the additional top up from our reserve grade.” Brothers Football Club will face off against MUFC in the Premier Reserve final, with coach Steve McNaughton satisfied with how his men have gone about their business. “Our reserve grade lads have had a very consistent season,” he said. “We had a really good run of form in the final seven matches of the sea-

son. “We were especially lucky in the final round of the season, as Olympic slipped up and we were able to win the premiership by a point.” When asked about the difficulties of backing up after playing in a grand final only a week earlier, McNaughton explained his unique situation. “In terms of head to head commitments, I’ve been on both sides of the fence before,” he said. “Along with injuries and suspensions, it is simply something you go through. “We’ve got a decent amount of players in our squad – and will also be able to give several of our younger third division lads some big game experience.” While Brothers will also face Edge Hill in the Premier Ladies final, the real feel good story of the day is Matt Aubrey’s Warriors, who will compete in the ladies Premier Reserve final. Locals should keep a special eye out for 14-

year old Nicole Gledhill, who is highly touted as one of the brightest up and coming footballers in all of North Queensland. “Nicole needed to get special approval to play football with us, as she is only 14,” Aubrey said. “She has a very bright future in the game if she continues to knuckle down hard.” Two years ago, the Warriors did not have a female football team. But under the unwavering passion and loyalty of Aubrey to his players, they have taken NQ football by storm. “We’ve had a really solid year – I’ve always believed that attack is the best form of defence,” he said. “We train twice a week with good numbers and enjoy a bit of banter at training. “In terms of squad dynamics, we have a solid blend of youth and experience, with our players aged between 14 and 33. “Our first year players have come along leaps and bounds this season.”

REPRESENTATIVES from the Brisbane Roar travelled to the Mareeba United Football Club for a football skills clinic recently. The youngsters enjoyed every minute of honing their love of football.

Mareeba Bulls junior Jon Gambino with John Bomben, holding the winning trophy for the under 11’s in John Bomben Carnival.

TWO local Mareeba coaches were part of success at last week’s U/12 John Bomben football carnival in Cairns. Genio Quinteri (Manager) and Luch Avolio (Coach) were both integral factors in Cairns Green’s win via the dreaded penalty shoot-out. The representative side featured seven young Mareeba footballers.

Mareeba United Football Club players and supporters at the presentation night on Friday.

Wayne Srhoj received the 2015 FNQ Premier League’s ‘Player of the Year’ award.

Memorable evening for FNQ Football at annual presentation night By Justin Fris

THE Mareeba United Football Club have made a habit of travelling to Cairns and winning a lot of recognition recently. This trend continued last Friday evening, where the Bulls took home four major awards at FNQ Football’s gala presenation event of the year. These awards cap off a memorable year for the local club. In the Premier Men’s awards, the Bulls took home three of the four awards, with Julian Madrid (Goalkeeper of the Year), Wayne Srhoj (Player of the Year) and Alex Srhoj (Coach of the

Year) recognised. Despite disappointment of being defeated 3-1 in their Premier Reserve grand final against Leichhardt, Marcello Savaglio was awarded ‘Coach of the Year’ for the division. Innisfail United’s goal scoring ace Joshua Taylor was also commended on his fantastic season, taking home ‘Goalscorer of the Year’. Richard Young was fantastic for the Leichhardt throughout the season for his side and was a popular choice for the Premier Reserve’s ‘Most Valuable Player’ award. Young made it a double for the passionate Lions supporters, also taking home ‘Goalscorer of

the Year’. Jukiah Lenord looks to have a bright future in the FNQ Premier League, after a stellar season in the U/18’s competition. Lenord matched Young’s Premier League effort – which means the Lions have plenty of attacking prowess at their disposal. Dean Ashton’s imprint on ladies football at Edge Hill United is a testament to the success achieved by both of his squads on the night. Stacey Jones (Most Valuable Player), Shelley Macaulay (Goal scorer of the Year), Katelyn McCullum (Goalkeeper of the Year) and Mr Ashton (Coach of the Year) received recognition in the

Premier ladies competition. Edge Hill United and Stratford shared the spoils in the Premier Reserve ladies competition awards, each receiving two awards. Jessica Logan received two awards (Most Valuable Player and Goal scorer of the Year) for her sterling season in black and gold, while SallyAnne Tucker (Goalkeeper of the Year) and Matt Moss (Coach of the Year) flew the flag for the blue and whites. All eyes are now firmly placed on Borzi Park ahead of the upcoming Crad Evans Shield this Saturday in Mareeba with games from 12.45pm at Borzi Park.

Bandits win two in a row By Justin Fris

Mareeba Speedway shines under lights MAREEBA Shire Council Mayor Tom Gilmore officially opened Mareeba Speedway’s new safety and light facilities last Saturday evening at the clubs first official night race meeting. Alongside club officials and Qld Sport and Recreation representative Alexi Sachlikidis, Mayor Gilmore praised the level of efficiency and punctuality of the event exhib-

ited by loyal volunteers. The meeting saw an exciting introduction of the Super Sedans (pictured), which made their racing debut on the Tablelands. Club members have worked feverously over the last 12 months to make regular night meetings a reality – and the crowd of hundreds voted in approval with their feet.

THE Mareeba Bandits made it two wins in a row to begin their one-day campaign, with a four wicket win over Rovers last Sunday. Bandits captain Brendan Payne said he was delighted with the youthful impact within his side, with Ricky Shave and Andrew Lamborn pure class with the ball. With Shave (4/18) and Lamborn (3/14) ripping through the Rovers rearguard, the hosts were dismissed for a paltry 99 off 26 overs. After some nervy moments during their opening match against United, Payne said the team was focussed on playing sensible shots and knocking

down the chase. Experienced opener Rob Taylor partnered up with Brendan Falvo, who performed wonderfully well at the top of the innings. After a promising start, the visitors would be required to overcome a mini collapse, falling to 5/91 and needing someone to grab the innings by the scruff of the neck. Payne and his fellow teammates would eventually be able to breathe a sigh of relief, with Luke Lamborn and Ricky Shave ensuring the trip back to Mareeba would have a win to go along with it (with eight overs to spare). The Bandits will travel to Tully this weekend, which will be their first two day match of the 2015/2016 season.

Logjam at midway point of the Mareeba Basketball League By Justin Fris

EXCITEMENT has never been higher for those who follow or play in the Mareeba Basketball League at the halfway mark of the competition. With two teams currently tied in equal top spot on 19 points and a further three sides within three points, the league has never been tighter. This season saw the old ‘Stingrays’ team broken up and distributed throughout the league, in a bid to even up all sides. High school players have always made a sizeable imprint in matches, but perhaps never more so than this season. Household names like Tyson Tatti and Omar Myrteza are continuing to develop fine careers in the game, but there are several up and comers who are equally impressive.

Young Brandon Osborne is having a fantastic year for the Red Devils, with him learning from some of the best custodians in the area. Another impressive player who has made recent waves in Ely Simmons, who is absolutely deadly from beyond the key. Experience is a commodity which cannot be bought from Coles Supermarkets up the road and these seasoned veterans are putting on a weekly show for the crowd. Whether it be Clinton Cameron’s fantastic hustle on offence – or even Luke Libke’s control of tempo – these youngsters have never been in a better place. Despite only being in their first year as a new entity, Hot Air has made a fantastic start, by sitting pretty on the top of the table. Sitting side by side is the MBA Deadley’s, who have continued on with last season’s im-

PAGE 26 The Express, Wednesday, September 30, 2015

pressive form. It should be noted that Hot Air did defeat the Deadley’s 41-30 only a few weeks ago – but the Deadleys did have several unavailable. The Red Devils currently sit in 3rd place, after an indifferent start to the season. Humpty Dumpty appears to be sitting proudly on the wall again, after their recent 96-24 win over the Comets. Despite having an indifferent start to the season, the Stingrays continue to make progress under the guidance of Brendan Ebner. Fabio Nocilla continues to be a driving force behind the Comets’ forum, with his teammates continually benefiting from his excellent work in midcourt. Express continue to flirt with form, with some of their ball excellent and some of their ball enigmatic at best.

Rounding out the foot of the table are the Barras, who have gone a season and a half without a win. The addition of Clinton Eales will hopefully generate one for them soon. In the Ladies competition, it has been very much a changing of the guard, with the Serial Killers appearing to have the Baiada Steggles’ number so far this season. After a less than impressive start, the Gummaz have slowly begun to restructure their season after beginning with a five game losing streak. The Mareeba Basketball Association will also be holding a special tournament on October 29 and 30 at the Mareeba PCYC Sports Hall, where they will compete against other associations across the Far North. Matches are held Thursday evening at the Mareeba PCYC Sports Hall on Walsh Street.

Younger brigade hold future for Gladiators

By Justin Fris

THE Mareeba Gladiators will be banking on youth in 2016, as they aim to end their September absence. With solid success at youth level this season (U/12, U/13 and U/14) the club will be hoping these men can make a successful transition into senior football. Club officials, players and supporters stood united last Friday evening at the Mareeba Leagues Club, with Tom Hughes crowned ‘Gladiator of the Year’ An uncompromising footballer who never takes a backward step, Hughes was a pillar of hope throughout the season – regardless of the scoreboard. Other award winners from A-Grade included Rob Pedersen (best forward), Frank Koroi (most consistent), William Dodd (coaches award), Patele Tai (most improved), Rhylan Reys (Rookie of the Year) and Ian King (best back), who was the only Mareeba Gladiator to be selected in the Cairns District Rugby League ‘Team of the Year’. It was a year that promised a lot for the green and gold, who began the season with new enthusiasm under newly appointed coach, David Grainer. The pre-season was highlighted by a memorable trial match against the Atherton Roosters, with the Gladiators cruising to a 50-0 win. Davies Park hosted the first fixture of the new premiership season, with the Gladiators facing Innisfail. Although showing great endeavour for lengthy periods, the season began with a 38-12 defeat. Fortunes would then take a turn for the worse in ensuing weeks, with Ivanhoes (58-4) and Brothers Cairns (56-20) dishing out meaty hidings. Grainer’s men had the bye in round four, which was

a welcomed relief to re-evaluate their list. They would travel up to Mossman a week later and convincingly defeat the Sharks, 42-10. A week later, they would make the toughest road trip in the CDRL to Yarrabah and walk away with a pulsating 31-30 win. But it would be during the months of May and June, where finals aspirations would ultimately be extinguished. After an impressive victory over a Bradley Stepheninspired Kangaroos, the Gladiators would drop four in a row (Suburbs 44-24, Tully 38-12, Atherton 17-14 and Innisfail 44-0). The derby loss against the Roosters was a bitter pill to swallow, considering the Roosters spent the final 10 minutes defending their goal line and required a late field goal to seal the win. However although wins were not coming, there were positive signs from younger members of the squad. Ricky Shave, Rhylan Reys and Drysdan Hayes were three examples of exciting talents who wore their jersey with pride each week. In the second half of the season, the Gladiators turned Davies Park into a mini fortress. Out of their final five home games, they would only drop one game (against Edmonton 26-22) Two victories in the back half of the season leap of the page – a resilient 22-14 win over eventual grand finalist Ivanhoes and a defence-optional 68-36 win over Yarrabah. In his presentation address, Gladiators president Andrew Foster expressed his gratitude to members of the club’s committee who helped make the club function and make it a pleasant evening out.
